Life 101: Teaching Your Kids How to Talk on the Phone

Editors Note: More time at home means more time with the kiddos….which is a blessing and a WHOLE ton of responsibility all in one. If you’ve been following along with our fearless leader, Abby Larson, on her social media — you may have seen a few savvy tips and tricks she’s teaching her three kids. Well, lucky for you, she dished out all the good deets for us to share over here on SMP Living, and you might want to consider adding these to your arsenal of “how to keep the kids entertained.”

So read up, enjoy and take this time to teach your kids the finer skills in life.
———

If you need a Life Skills 101 class for today, consider “How to Talk Like a Human on the Telephone.” Because if you really listen to your kids talk on the phone, it’s no where near normal. ⁣

1. Phone Basics

Start off by covering the mechanics of a phone number. Talk about area codes and the various options in your area. Have them memorize the first three numbers to start. Make sure to check in on this throughout the week. ⁣⁣

2. Dailing 101

How to dial on a landline phone. Discuss the “1” before the number and dialing long-distance vs. locally. ⁣⁣

3. Intro Etiquette. ⁣⁣

-Say your name in a friendly way. “Hi! This is Abby.” ⁣⁣

-Ask to speak to your friend or family member, “May I speak to Audrey?”⁣⁣

4. Conversation Skills. ⁣⁣

-Start by repeating your name and stating why you are calling. “Hey Audrey, this is Abby! I’m just calling to chat!”⁣⁣

-Then, make sure to ask if now is a good time. “Is now a good time?”⁣⁣

-If they say, yes… To the races!⁣⁣

-If they say no… No problem, ask if there is a better time or ask if they will call you back when they are available.

-Once you begin chatting, make sure to ask plenty of meaningful questions. Listen to the answers to know what you could ask or say next. Without listening, a real conversation can’t happen. ⁣⁣

-When there is silence… Ask a question or tell them something funny/silly/scary/cool that happened today. ⁣⁣

5. Closing.

Make sure they understand that you don’t just hang-up or abruptly say “bye” after a sentence. Just like in a letter, a story or an email, there needs to be a closing. “It was so great chatting with you, I have to run!” ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Then, make them call each other in practice calls. And the final test… Call a friend and put your skills to use!

A Timeless Affair at Pursell Farms With a Fresh Color Scheme of Creamy White and “Garden” Green

Our hearts have fallen head over heels in love with this stunning summer wedding at Pursell Farms that is the epitome of a classic wedding. Southern Posies planned and decorated their day with abundant blooms from gardenia to peonies to ranunculus, all in a timeless color scheme of creamy white and “garden” green. Head on over to the full gallery to see all of the steal-worthy design details and aww-inducing memorable moments – taken by Ryan Ray Photography!

From the bride… Ben and I met at our friends’ wedding in Memphis where he was a groomsman and I was a bridesmaid. Both of us had mentioned to our friends early on in the weekend that we were interested in meeting each other, but I (Alexandra) was the one to make the first move, and I still give him a hard time about it to this day:) We immediately hit it off and started dating pretty quickly after. At the time, I was living in Birmingham, AL and he was in Nashville, so we were long distance for a little under a year. (We spent a LOT of time on I-65, we still probably could drive it with our eyes closed ha!) During my time in Birmingham I worked as a stylist/decorating editor for a couple of magazines, and am currently an interior designer in Nashville, so when it came to planning our wedding it was really important that it felt like us, almost like welcoming someone into our home.

My style as a designer is classic, collected, and detailed, and I wanted that same feel for our wedding day. When working with design clients it’s often the littlest details that bring the whole space together, which I think was very indicative of our day. We worked with Virginia Hart on all of our wedding paper goods and went for a design that felt like a spin on a really traditional wedding invitation, very ornate but with a more whimsical design and calligraphy style.

The illustration included all of the flowers that would be used throughout the wedding day: gardenia, peonies, ranunculus, etc. Those illustrations were carried out into the overall design of our reception through our choice of table settings, linens, tent draping, backdrops, and even my wedding dress! My dress was designed by Anne Barge, and customized to include tiny little flowers on the bodice and trailing down my veil. To match, I had jewelry designer Nicola Bathie, make little mother of pearl flower earrings for my bridesmaids to wear with their dresses.

We opted for very classic and fresh colors of a creamy white and “garden” green (two colors I use often in my design projects) for everything. Our venue, Pursell Farms was so lush and beautiful on its own that I really just wanted to complement the setting when it came to the design of our day. Our ceremony was very simple, we were married on top of “Outback Hill”, a piece of land that overlooked the lush rolling hills of the property, and for our reception we opted for a large open tent so guests could take in the beauty around them.

Beyond all of the fun design elements it was important to Ben and I that our guests felt “at home” in a sense. We kept our guest list on the smaller side so we could ensure we were able to speak to each person who attended and opted to serve a traditional seated dinner at long tables so guests could get to know one another over a meal. One of my favorite memories from the reception was when my father led everyone in prayer before the meal, it was so special to think that everyone there was praying in unison with and for us. We wanted the day centered on our friends and family and tried to involve them in any way we could. The most special (and memorable) family involvement was my 89 year old grandfather (who also married my parents) married Ben and I. None of the ceremony went as planed, mics didn’t work, it was so incredibly hot, my grandfather got mixed up on the ceremony order, etc., but I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world! And, that would be my one piece of advice to brides, embrace every moment just as it comes, because wrapped up in those imperfections are some of the most beautiful memories.

7 Ways To Make “Working From Home” Work For You

We’re on our second week of working from home, and for many people, this is where the romance of the situation starts to wear off a bit.

But hang in there! While the novelty of the situation might be gone, we’ve got some tips and tricks to make your days work for you.

1. Separate Out Your Work Location

Have you been working from your bed? How about your couch? The first week of working from home — that’s practically a right of passage. You’ve got to do that at least once to just to say that you did! But now that we’re in the nitty-gritty of the situation, you need to carve out some very intentional space to call your “office.” This can be a breakfast nook that you’re commandeering for a bit, a corner of your bedroom that you can pop a table up in or even the dining room table if you need it.

The idea is to set a space aside JUST for work. Sometimes balance doesn’t look like juggling, it looks like blocking out distractions.

2. Audio Matters

If you’re used to a general office chatter, the quietness of the home is a little daunting. It’s REALLY tempting to turn on “background TV” here, but let us warn you — TV has a way of always looping you in and cutting into your productivity. We highly recommend finding an instrumental playlist that helps to soothe your soul, stimulate your mind and keep you motivated. This can look like EDM, classical piano or soul hymns. Whatever it looks like for you, make a habit of turning it on to help set the tone of your “workday.”

3. Find a Rhythm With Kids

Some of you are used to working from home, but it’s the addition of kids that’s really throwing you through the loop. It’s so easy to get caught up here in worry, to-do lists (more on that later) and balancing being a good mom, employee and now teacher. Rhythm is really important here. You can spend all day fighting your kids into a schedule that you think will be PERFECT, but if you don’t take rhythm into account it will be a long uphill battle.

Take a day this week to pay attention to the natural flow of things. When do your kids need the most attention? Are they super energetic in the morning? Do they CRAVE your attention at lunch more than they actually crave food? When your kids need you — if you can, set work down and give them the attention they need. Maybe their down-time is actually 3pm and that’s when you can crank out the majority of your work. Maybe you need to wake up an hour earlier to crank out emails — or maybe stay up an hour later.

At the end of the day, wrestling your kids into a schedule will take so much time and energy you’ll be exhausted by the time you get to your lists, so pay attention to when time lends itself to help you get what you need to be done.

4. Take Intentional Breaks

We say breaks and we immediately think of “grabbing a snack” and while sometimes that’s exactly what you need, most of the time it’s not. Instead of grabbing a snack, think about a quick sweat sesh! Do some yoga, walk around the block, try a hit class or run up the stairs. Or, do some tidying around the house (again, more on that later!) Maybe a break is a good time to play a quick game with the kids.

You need to take brain breaks, it’s important to your workload, so take them in a way that is special to get to work from home. After all, this is a special time, so make it a special occasion as well!

5. Make Your To-Do List

Working from home shifts the daily work mindset. It goes from an “8-5” to a “get this done” kind of situation — so make the most of it!  Start each day by knowing exactly what needs to get done, prioritizing urgent needs. We like to think about breaking this up into three categories.

What NEEDS to get done today? This typically looks like project completion and is the top priority, and the workday cannot end until it is complete

What do I need to maintain? This is a task looks like emails, inbound calls, scheduling and planning. You need to maintain things as they come in because you don’t want things to pile up and become urgent daily needs.

What do I need to prepare? This looks into the future. Knowing what you need to do to prepare for what’s coming around the corner can help keep your daily tasks balanced. If you’ve got a big project due date coming up, taking the time to prep for it in advance makes a huge difference in your daily work load.

Having these three categories helps you draw a line and define the “right now” needs and “the future” needs to assess when you can close the computer for the evening.

6. Keep Your Home Tidy

This seems like a tall task in the midst of this craziness, but trust us — it makes a huge difference. Try implementing a nightly “round up” where you set everything in place to start the next day off on the right foot. You’ll be surprised at how well this helps your mindset in the mornings, and each day you implement this makes the following day that much easier.

When you sit down to get work done, if you’re looking at a pile of dishes that will inevitably make dinner take a little longer — you’ll be tempted to stop work early and tackle the load. The same thing goes for laundry. Give your brain some peace of mind and use this as a time to develop home-keeping habits that have a SIGNIFICANT impact on your mental clarity.

7. Get Dressed

We can’t advise this enough — getting out of your PJs every day makes a HUGE difference in your sanity. While this is a great time to let your face breathe without makeup, or your hair heals without daily heat, putting on clothes that you didn’t just spend the night in puts you in a totally different mindset that helps put your brain break away from relaxing mode and into “work” mode.

Even if it’s a ~chic workout set~ if you didn’t sleep in it, it’s a-ok.

These times are crazy, but they also offer something to savor. Own it! Make your space your own, make your home a place you really want to live in and cherish the time you get to be with your kiddos. This is crazy, but we’re all in it together.

An In-Depth Interview With a Real Bride Who Postponed Her Wedding Due to COVID-19, Plus Advice From Her Planner

With everything that’s going on in the world right now, sometimes it helps to feel like you’re not alone. To all the brides out there who are thinking about or have already postponed their wedding due to COVID-19, take a deep breath – you’re doing amazing, and it’s all going to be okay. Today we’re sharing an interview with of our very own here at SMP, Meredith, who sadly needed to postpone her June wedding due to the virus. We hope hearing her story will help you in some way. Read on to find out how her experience has been and for some wise advice from her planner as well.

What was your original wedding date?

June 13, 2020 at Caswell Farm in Gray, Maine

Why did you decide to postpone your wedding?

We are having a pretty small wedding (under 100) and most of our guests are flying in from across the country, even internationally, and we knew that we did not want to ask people to travel during this time. We also did not want to miss out on having our absolute favorite people with us on such a special day. We decided that even though it’s so disappointing to change the date, we would rather change it and have all of our guests be able to make it.

Would you mind walking us through where you were at in the planning process at the time when you learned about the growing concern surrounding COVID-19? Which vendors had you already booked?

When everything began unfolding here in the US, everything was already booked – photographer, videographer, venue, band, catering, florals, planner, hair and makeup, transportation for guests, etc. The design was already complete. We were working on just small details like day-of paper and ironing out the logistical details.

What has been the best piece of advice you’ve received that has helped you?

Two weeks ago when we first started discussing the Covid-19 impact on our wedding, my planner reminded me that this day is going to be a beautiful celebration of our love no matter the date and to have peace of mind going into the wedding knowing that our friends and family are healthy and able to celebrate with us. She reminded me that our friends and family will be so excited to come celebrate once this is all over and a rescheduled date won’t be seen as an inconvenience but rather a thoughtful decision to protect every guest. This made the postponing decision a no-brainer for my fiance and I.

Will you be doing something special on your original wedding date to celebrate?

Actually we are still going to get married! We are so excited to be getting married, so we will do a private ceremony. We are thinking something along the lines of an elopement in the mountains with just our family sounds perfect. Our postponement date will still be a full wedding ceremony and reception as planned, but we will move forward with marriage on our original date.

How did you inform your guests of the postponement? How did they react?

A sweet calligrapher and designer created an announcement for us to send to our guests. We wanted to let them know as soon as possible, so we sent via email and text so they would have time to cancel reservations, etc. Everyone has been beyond supportive and kind to us. Everyone is feeling anxious right now with everything that is going on, and they all shared the same sentiments that the celebration will be that much sweeter once all of this is behind us.

How have your vendors been helping you throughout the decision making and postponement process?

Our vendors have been unbelievable. I cannot thank my planner enough as she has been communicating so well with all of my vendors. Our photographer and videographers have reached out a few times on a personal level just to check in and see how we are doing. They feel like friends checking in.  Our venue and catering team and have been so accommodating and even shifted things around on their end so that a new potential date would work for the fall. We are so thankful for our vendor team for being so helpful. I am not sure what I would have done without them, especially my planner.

Has this had any effect on your overall wedding budget? Did you have wedding insurance?

Every single vendor is willing to apply our deposits to our new date, which is why we are doing the best we can to align all of our vendors with a new date. Thankfully airlines and airbnb are going to be crediting/refunding our guests. All in all, there has been very little financial impact to our budget, which we are so thankful for. We want to honor all of our contracts with our vendors, so the best way we can support them is to work together to find a day that still works for them. We did not get wedding insurance. We were planning on day-of insurance (per our venue), but we had not yet secured it.

Have any of your overall design plans changed since moving your wedding date?

I really don’t think so! I know that moving from a spring to fall wedding could pose a new set of design plans, but my color scheme should work well for fall as well. It’s possible that due to seasonality, our flowers will change slightly, but overall I feel lucky that this design plan should still work. We are doing a tented wedding, so we will have to incorporate heating in the tent for dinner and perhaps bundle up a bit during the dancing.

How has it been trying to find a new date that works? Have your vendors been flexible?

I would say it’s been challenging to find a date that lines up with all of our vendors only because there are so many and it’s late in the year to be booking a wedding. Our venue is booked for weekends in 2020, and our other vendors are as well. We decided to look into Mondays in September, as Mondays are not too popular for weddings :) but we will make it work! We have a spreadsheet of all of our vendors and they are weighing in on dates they can make it work. Our wedding is in Maine, and all of our vendors are in the New England area with the exception of our videographers, so that does make it a bit easier to coordinate. I know shortly we will land on a new date.

How have you been feeling throughout this whole process? I know it must be so stressful and frustrating, has anything good come out of this experience than you can share to brides who might be going through the same thing?

At first I was very sad and frustrated. I felt that all the hard work that we had put into our wedding with planning and logistics was lost. I was disappointed that my bachelorette trip to Austin was also canceled. It just felt like everything was falling apart hour by hour. I took a day to really feel the emotions of it all and to think deeply about what to do. Once I thought through everything, I felt much more calm. Since talking with my fiance, family, and planner, I feel so confident in the decision we made to postpone and a huge weight has lifted. Right now is a hard time for all of us in the world, and it felt uneasy for me to move forward with the planning knowing that there was a great chance the wedding would not take place in June. With a new date in the Fall I can relax and be more present in other areas of life that are needing attention right now. I feel so grateful for those who have been so supportive of us. I also feel that the small details of the wedding I was worried about before are not important. I still want it to be a beautiful day, and I know it will be, but the recent events have really helped put everything into perspective. Our wedding will be a celebration of our love, and I cannot wait to celebrate that with our friends and family when that day comes. I think the best thing that has come out of this experience is just the reminder that what truly matters is our love for one another and the safety and health of our loved ones. Our wedding WILL happen, it just will not be when we planned for it to be. I am very grateful to be reminded that I am marrying someone who is so supportive and a rock in times of uncertainty.

Any tips on how to stay calm throughout this stressful process that has helped you?

I would say that my best tip would be to breathe and take each day as it comes. As brides during this pandemic, it is very easy to let anxiety take over and become overwhelmed with all of the decisions that need to be made. I found that once the decision to change the date was made, I felt a huge sense of relief in knowing that the final planning and preparations wouldn’t have to be done during this stressful time. I suggest yoga, prayer, meditation, talking with trusted family and friends. I also suggest a heavy break from the news for a while to clear your head, a nice cup of tea, and cuddling with your puppy, fiance, or both :) It’s a great time to practice self-care, especially since we all have a bit more time at home these days!

What are you most excited about for when the day finally comes?

I am just really excited to marry my fiance! I am also so excited for my family and friends to be able to all leave our homes and be together! Our family and friends are scattered all across the country and it’s been so long since we have seen so many. We were counting down until June to see them, and now it will just be a bit longer. The celebration of our wedding will be even more special now that we are all unable to see people. I think it will be such a good reminder to everyone in the world how important community is and how much we need one another. I am looking forward to life after the Covid-19 pandemic and all the good that will come from this.

We also asked Meredith’s planner, Lani Toscano, a few questions… here’s what she said:

How did you open the conversion with your clients regarding the effects COVID-19 may have on their wedding?

We reached out to all of our clients and   acknowledged that this was a time filled with unprecedented uncertainty.  We clearly laid out for everyone what we were doing on our end and what they could do on their end.  We posed several questions for them to think through so that they could begin to frame their decision making with facts rather than fear.

We wanted them to know that we were going to take a few days to dive into each one of their contracts and email their vendors.  Our intent was to create a data sheet that explained deposit info – final payment info – cancelation policies and postponement policies.  Our belief was that knowledge helps you gain some control back in a situation that feels completely out of control.

Once we emailed the documents  – we also jumped on phone calls with all May – June clients and fielded calls from July and August clients who reached out to discuss options.  Each call we have had has allowed us to help clients make sound decisions from rebooking to holding to the original date with an agreement to re-look at the situation in a week’s time.

Our goal was to provide support and guidance not fear or rash decisions – for some folks that meant revisiting the questions in three days’ time and for others it meant revisiting the questions in a week or two.

We can not communicate enough with our clients right now.

How have you been dealing with the challenges that come with so many couples needing to postpone their Spring weddings?

We breathe a lot.  First we work with our clients to look at all the factors that go into a postponement – the financial ones – the emotional one and logistical ones.  Then we involve the vendor community for their specific wedding. Vendors have been nothing but attentive, flexible and caring – it is clear that we are all focussed on a reschedule and not a cancelation.  In some cases we have contemplated moving events to 2021 but as of yet have not had to do that.

What were some of the factors that you encouraged Meredith to keep in mind when making her decision to postpone?

I wanted Meredith and Carl to be excited for their wedding  -filled with joy, anticipation and love not angst and concern.  The more we talked it seemed that fending off anxiety was the best bet and moving the wedding was only logical.  The next step was to preserve their investments to date, which meant working to have as many if not all of their current vendors involved in the new date.  Meredith was amazing and she quickly understood that to do this we needed to utilize a weekday – a Sunday would have been ideal, but her wonderful venue has guests there still  on Sundays – so Monday was the day. Vendors jumped at this and now we can move forward. I do believe that their guests will be supportive and will strive to make a Monday work to celebrate Meredith and Carl.

How have you handled deposits when it comes to event postponement?

We  are more than willing to move our deposits to a postponed wedding – there are two weekends this season we can not take on any other events but other than that we make most other weekends and certainly weekdays work for our team.

A Romantic, Rainy Tuscan Wedding at Villa Medicea DI Lilliano With Breathtaking Views of the Duomo

As we go through this difficult time amid the spreading of COVID-19, our hearts and prayers are with everyone in Italy and around the world affected by this disease. Today, we’re celebrating the beauty and strength of Italy with this stunning Tuscan wedding at Villa Medicea DI Lilliano planned by Anne Laure Weddings. It’s the perfect recipe for a magical destination wedding in Tuscany – a pizza party rehearsal dinner in the garden, a first look among the olive groves, and cocktails on the terrace overlooking the Duomo. From start to finish, this day is nothing short of a dream. Head on over to the full gallery, captured by L&V Photography, to see all the destination wedding inspiration.

From Anne Laure Weddings… Sophie and Joey tied the knot last August in Tuscany, not far away fro Florence. This sweet couple from Seattle are Italy lovers and wanted a small intimate affair surrounded by their dearest friends and family members. They chose the Villa Medicea di Lilliano as their wedding venue and the rehearsal dinner took place in one of the other villas of the property. For the rehearsal dinner, they chose to have a real garden pizza party with a mix of aromatic plants and lemons as centerpieces, wooden tables and chairs, sage and white striped napkins and string lights crossing the lawn. And the gelato cart as dessert was a must!

Their wedding day was as elegant as the pizza night. The bride wore gold Miu Miu bridal shoes and a romantic V-neckline satin gown, the groom Gucci moccassins and a white tuxedo jacket with black lapels. Black accents were everywhere to see, from the bridesmaids dresses to the flowers and charger plates. After their first look in the olive grove of the villa, the couple couldn’t not go to Florence for their couple shots! They enjoyed the view over the Florence Cathedral on Piazza Michelangelo and strolled on the Santa Trinita bridge with the Ponte Vecchio as a beautiful backdrop before coming back for their wedding ceremony. Sophie and Joey chose to celebrate their union on the terrace overlooking the Duomo and whereas the rain started just when the guests arrived, it stopped the moment the bride set foot on the terrace! The dinner took place in the amazing garden of the villa surrounded by lemon trees. The long table was adorned by the stunning floral arrangements by Chiara Sperti Florals Events and covered by a ceiling of fairy lights.

From the bride & groom… Sophie studied abroad in Florence while she was in college. Ever since then, it was always her dream to be married in Italy. Both our families have Italian heritage, so Italy holds a special place in our hearts. We wanted our wedding to be memorable and special for every guest that attended. Our goal was to plan an intimate, classic, and romantic destination wedding. In order to achieve a classic/modern look, we decided on white, black, and gold as our color palette. We wanted the entire wedding party in black – bridesmaids, groomsmen, and our parents. We just love this look because it’s timeless. It’s a look that never goes out of style. One fun aspect of this style was having Joey wear a white tux jacket so that we would stand out from the rest of the wedding party. Sophie’s grandpa wore a white tux jacket at his wedding as well, so this style choice was a way for us to incorporate deeper connections between our history and our future. Most of our wedding attendees are from the Seattle area, so we were asking a lot of people to have them travel all the way to Florence. Some people had never been to Italy, let alone left North America.

We decided that instead of just having a one day affair, we wanted to make our rehearsal dinner more of a welcome dinner and invite everyone who was attending the wedding. We wanted this to be laid-back and fun, and thought it would be a great way for everyone to socialize ahead of the big day. We decided to do a floral dress theme because Joey loves his crazy floral shirts. The dinner consisted of casual, outdoor dining that included pizza, wine, and a gelato cart! At the welcome dinner we also made bags with our venue illustration on it, and filled it with wine and olive oil from the venue as a thank you gift. Our favorite moment aside from saying “we do” was our wedding dinner. We hosted this in the venue lawn just as the tuscan sun was beginning to set. Our table arrangement was one long table that fit all 44 of our guests, and we had fairy lighting spanning the entire length above us. We also had architectural uplights that lit up the venue throughout the evening. It was magical! Dinner was served over three delicious courses, and in between those courses we slotted in all the speeches nice and evenly. We topped it all off with a live and interactive traditional Italian wedding cake presentation. For flowers we wanted all white to contrast with everyone wearing black and we wanted an array of local flowers. For the dinner table setting we wanted the table lined with flowers and candles to keep it romantic.

For the bridal bouquet I knew that I wanted to have my Grandmother’s rosary intertwined, every woman in my family has used it in their bouquet since her. Joey carried his Aunt’s rosary in his pocket all day, this was special because she had recently passed away. Both of these aspects were extra important to us because it was another way to incorporate our families. Sophie found her gown at Nordstrom and it was by Jenny Yoo. It was not what she had originally envisioned for her wedding dress, but once she decided on it, she could not have been more pleased. She felt the A-line shape and simplicity of the dress would go perfectly with our Italian villa wedding. For favors, since we had already given the guests their welcome bags, we kept it simple and provided everyone with a bottle of limoncello at their wedding dinner seats. For the assigned seats, we had acrylic plaques made with everyone’s name on them and they were able to take these home as mementos from the wedding. For the cocktail hour we wanted to have an assortment of meats, cheeses, and Italian appetizers. Aperol Spritzes were served as the cocktail. We also decided to have a three piece Italian band playing to add to the ambience. For our wedding cake, we decided to do a traditional Italian cake instead of the traditional tiered American cake. We also decided to have our wedding cake made live in front of the guests. We thought this would be fun and entertaining. Little did we know that we would also be helping to make our own wedding cake! The caterer came up to us and asked if we wanted to help, and of course we said yes! They placed a chef cap on both of our heads and gave us each a piping bag with the cake filling in it.

What is one piece of advice that you could give brides-to-be?

I know everyone says this, but the day goes by in an absolute flash. Try your best to enjoy every minute of it. Spend as much time with your spouse as you can and try not to get separated too much. It is the one day that is just about the both of you and you should really cherish that. If you are planning a destination wedding, try not to worry about the little things. Just focus on getting the big things right. For example – we were not able to visit the venue before we got married, so the first time we saw it in-person was 4 days before our wedding. We had to trust our wedding planner, venue, and vendors to help us achieve our vision without us ever stepping foot onsite. Making the right decision in those three categories will save you so much stress later on. So don’t sweat the small stuff and try to focus on the bigger picture. And get a wedding planner! There is no way we could have planned our wedding without the help of Anne-Laure. We were not able to visit the venue beforehand, so the first time we saw it was 4 days before our wedding. Anne-Laure made sure that we knew every detail about the venue and did an onsite visit where she FaceTimed us so that we could see everything. She truly understood our vision down to every detail. She kept us on track and brought amazing vendors and ideas to the table.

Warning, these garden-inspired editorial shoots may cause some serious daydreaming. The romance, the attention to detail, the floral umbrella! We can’t stop starring at it all from the all-talented Claire Duran Weddings & Events, who has brought us not one but two shoots that have left us utterly speechless. None other than wedding photographers Rudney Novaes and Natalie Jayne could have captured the vision with such an artful and inspired approach. You won’t believe your eyes once you get your first look at, master florist from Hong Kong Angelica Fleur’s, exquiste use of florals. Head over to the full gallery and prepare to get swept away.

From Rudney Novaes PhotographyWedding photographers and film aficionados Rudney Novaes and Natalie Jayne created The Film Theory workshop to provide a hands-on lesson in film photography, developed for the aspiring film photographer.

Hosted at the historic location of Tudor Place in Georgetown, DC. two editorial pieces were designed by Claire Duran Weddings & Events. One consisted of a bridal shoot that would particularly highlight, master florist from Hong Kong Angelica Fleur’s signature piece, the floral umbrella.

The second editorial piece showcased a more full-scale shoot that included, amongst all elements, a stunning ceremony set up in the gardens of the venue and a tablescape with asymmetrical vertical centerpieces that were incredibly unique and the perfect match between Claire Duran’s imagination and Angelica Fleur’s brilliant execution.

The results were nothing short of stunning, and skillfully and artistically captured by Rudney Novaes and Natalie Jayne. Their images reflect so many of the reasons why we love the use of film for wedding photography.

How to Add Color to a Blank Canvas Wedding Venue With Confidence!

When it comes to blank canvases – color is your best friend. And this inspiration shoot from Callista & Company with floral design by Remi and Gold proves just that. The full gallery, captured by Allen Tsai, is loaded with pops of bright blooms and hanging installations against the clean white walls of the Prospect House. Not to mention the most gorgeous ruffled gown from Alexandra Grecco. Allow this shoot to give you a major dose of confidence to play with color at your wedding.

From Callista & Company… When Allen Tsai approached me to design a workshop shoot at Prospect House in Austin, I jumped at the opportunity to incorporate color at a venue that provides such an amazing blank palette space on such a scenic piece of land. Our design exhibited central themes of minimalism, intentionality, brights balanced by a base of neutrals, and a sense of contemporary romance.

Bold flowers tied together all aspects of the design from cocktails, to flat lays, dinner tables, stationery, the seating chart, cake, and even attire. Remi and Gold provided the most beautiful blooms, which were a cornerstone of the overall design. Grey and Cake designed contemporary color-blocked stationery paired with floral envelope liners.

Birch was carried throughout, including guest welcome gift trays, the seating chart, wood-backed dinner menus, as well as guest ceremony and dining chairs. We set a square oriented ceremony with a central hanging installation and a wall of bud vases in the background. Allen Tsai captured everything perfectly.

A Whimsical Winter Wedding Filled With Arizona Sunshine

A winter wedding, filled with Arizona sunshine, just four days before Christmas is sure to be magic! The high school sweethearts exchanged vows at a pine tree-filled chapel where their love story first began. The merriment continued at a reception filled with unique touches, like hand-painted acrylic ornaments tied with gold ribbon to create a stunning escort card display. Imoni Events brought the happiness of the holiday season and the romance of a longtime love together perfectly in all the details of the day. As always, Rachel Solomon Photography beautifully captured the joy of the stunning celebration. If you love all things holiday, you’re not going to want to miss the full gallery!

From the bride… The wedding planning began immediately following T.J.’s perfect proposal when we booked Brophy Chapel for our wedding ceremony the day after. It was the very first thing we did because of how important it was for us to exchange our vows in such a beautiful, historical place in Phoenix, Arizona. It’s so special to us because T.J. attended Brophy, an all-boys Jesuit school, and I the sister school, Xavier. Junior year of high school was where our love story began.

Our reception was at the Spanish-inspired Omni Montelucia Resort that backs up to the infamous Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, where most of the guests stayed to enjoy the gorgeous Arizona “winter” weather. We worked with Freed Hands to create hand-painted acrylic ornaments tied with a gold ribbon for our “escort cards”.

Our florist, Sarah and her team from Sarah’s Garden, created the most incredible centerpieces that were all shapes and sizes and included ivory, mauve, greenery, pops of burgundy, and accents of gold. The taper candles and lanterns that she scattered across the tables absolutely lit the room. We are forever grateful to our families and friends for celebrating with us and making the day one that we will always cherish!

You Won’t Believe This Fairytale Wedding Was Planned In Only Two Weeks!

Two weeks to wed! This incredible fairytale come true was put together by Tan Weddings & Events with only 14 days notice. The team worked their magic to create a romantic California wedding perfect for any princess bride, horse-drawn carriage included! Set against the majestic Mayacama Mountains, the images by Jennifer Clapp Photography are enough to leave you speechless. Take a step inside the full gallery for a closer look at all the romance.

From Tan Weddings & EventsWhen the groom reached out to Tan Weddings & Events to craft a fairytale wedding, he gave two key directives: lots of pink, and a timeframe of fewer than two weeks! Well, that’s going to need two handfuls of fairy dust! With a swish of her wand, lead planner and owner Jennifer Tan of Tan Weddings & Events mobilized a team of northern California’s leading creatives to make it happen.

When the beautiful bride, with a crown adorning her head and a perfectly arranged bouquet in her hand, arrived in her white carriage trimmed in red velvet, the fairytale, happily-ever-after wedding came to life!

Harvest Inn provided the charming setting of weathered brick patios and a lush vineyard, with the Mayacama Mountains creating a hazy backdrop. The team kept to the palette of pink – lots of pinks – in assembling reception vignettes that were ornately detailed and delicately scaled. The result? Sensual and scrumptious romance sprinkled with sparkly fairy dust.

Ask The Editor: Quarantine Edition

We’re almost through the first week of social distancing! This is certainly unprecedented, and honestly, we don’t know how long it’s going to last. But over at SMP living, we’re so glad to get to connect with all over you over the web!

This week’s ask the editor, we’re addressing the questions we’ve seen floating around along with some other tips and tricks we’ve seen floating around the internet!

In SO many ways, this is bringing out some good in humanity, and we’re ever so thankful for it.

1.  “What are some good things to do with my kiddo while we social distance?”

We’ve got a few tricks up our selves here! First, check out this article on “10 DIYs That Will Keep Your Kids Entertained” it’s sure to keep the kids entertained for a long time.

This is also a good time to teach your kids those pesky little things called “soft-skills.” Math has changed, they’re studying new things in English these days and keeping up in science class was hard enough as a student much less now.

Teachers are heroes and every day we grow increasingly grateful for them, so instead of trying to replace them and the missed learning canceled school brings— why not tackle this time to teach your kids things like how to address an envelope, proper phone etiquette, how you’re supposed to set the table, good tidying habits that not only help them but give you some sanity. Why not teach your kids some cooking lessons! Dinner’s on them eh?

When you’re kids look back on this time, they won’t remember that you somehow managed to breeze your way through algebra or that you have unprecedented knowledge of the animal kingdom, but teaching them your family and time-honored homemade cookie recipe is something that they’ll take with them forever. A little structure goes a long way, but not at the detriment of your sanity. You’ve got this! We believe in you.

3. Economic Stimulation

We talked about it in this article, but these are tricky times for businesses everywhere. Shutting down doors never means good things, but the more we can do to help the better! Even big businesses like Nordstroms and Madwell are shutting down physical locations, but still working to stimulate activity with online sales.

Do what you can here. Every dollar is not wasted because every dollar you spend is going to SOMEONE. Whether that’s a big company that employees thousands of people, or a small company with one person’s livelihood at stake, anything you can spend on the economy is good for the economy.

We asked small businesses what to do to help them, and here are a few of the responses:

– In your downtime, write business or product reviews! We all know how valuable those little stars are, so give some out to places that deserve it

– Giftcards! Cash is king in this situation, so anything you can do to help move that cash along helps.

– Order takeout from local places. Companies like Favor are delivering takeout without charge to help keep these guys afloat, and that’s invaluable.

3. “If the stores are out of all that I need, what do I do?”

This is so hard to deal with right now, but first things first — don’t panic. So many people are working hard and in double time to meet the needs of the people. Panic is what’s leading to these outages in the first place, but trust the process. Target alone is investing $300 Million in overtime employees and extra compensation to make sure the aisles fill up again.

You can also look online for some of this assistance. Amazon has most all of your basic essentials like toilet paper, hand soap and diapers, and don’t forget curbside and delivery systems for your grocery stores!

Hang in there, we’ll all get through this.

The Sweetest Ways to Decorate Your Cake Table for a Tempting Display!

No matter how many weddings we’ve attended, regrammed real wedding photos of, or written about, whenever the cake cutting comes around, we can’t help but eat it all up 😋. And why not? It’s one of the sweetest, happiest moments of the day, reducing us to tears… over the tiers. There’s usually a cheesy, yet relevant song playing in the background, a debut display of the couple’s together-forever teamwork in that premiere, perfectly-coordinated cut, and adorable, frosting-fated kisses amidst the first few bites of wedding cake. What can we say? #WeOnlyCameForTheCake (kidding, we came for the couple, but stayed for the promise of buttercream-enrobed layers of love by the end of it).

It’s truly a focal point of the fete and one that’ll be documented in, oh, a dozen or so pictures from your photographer, so apart from having the cake deliver on flavor – be it vanilla cake laced with with strawberry champagne mousse or a hazelnut almond cake layered with dark chocolate ganache – it’s got to deliver on design. And that means the whole cake table, not just the cake. Whether you want to create a modern, hyped-up mood complete with a scripted “how sweet it is” neon sign above your heads and sparklers burning out the top tier, or prefer something more classic and romantic with fresh flowers commingling with the sugar flowers and lots of candles covering the rest of the table, you really can make the whole thing deliciously tasty.

Again, we subscribe to the [wedding] cake for breakfast kind of life, so we’ve made sure our cake table toppers for the reception are way beyond delightful. One great cake vignette can change the world, that’s why you’ll also want to make sure you nibble on some of these supporting looks for your nuptials!

Fresh flowers.

Because, really, they tie your whole table together. Fresh cake, fresh flowers, it’s a mood.

Colorful linens.

Sometimes leaving champagne and cream to the sips and whips (that buttercream whip) is the best way to go. Punchy linens provide a great contrast to an otherwise simple, neutral cake color palette.

Some texture.

Flowers – yes; vivid linens – yes; well, how about something that kills both birds? Blanketing the tablecloth with bright petals is such a stylish and whimsical way to dress up your dessert destination.

An untraditional table.

The table itself doesn’t have to be basic, either. We actually love it when brides and grooms use platforms like wooden or glasstop tables, vintage bar carts, or hanging installations (extra points for that upside down / anti-gravity trend) over traditional sweet stands.

Photography by Ether and Smith

A too-cute topper.

Don’t get us wrong, we live for couples using toppers that may have been passed down from generation to generation – and thus a little dated, but still to-die-for for the sentiment – but we’re also huge fans of modern looks. Maybe it’s the couple’s new shared last name, maybe it’s a trio of wire photo hearts, or maybe it’s just gold wire letters that spell out L-O-V-E

Gold “Love” Cake Topper

Here are some of our favorites from the all-new Style Me Pretty shop. Not to sound the least bit like we’re describing Pokemon, but yes, you’ll want to collect them all.

To show off.

Think of the whole table as your cake canvas – how are you going to make that beauty shine? Candles always do it for us. And our dual-tone tapers actually remind us of an ombre frosted cake…

To serve in style.

Whether you have your cake stand tall on a glass, ceramic, or lucite stand won’t matter, but it’s got to look 😍. We suggest something clean like a bright white plate adorned with quotes around the rim (that aerial shot is on-point!). You’ll also need a matching serving set and a gorgeous pair of cake plates and fancy utensils. You might not be royalty, but your cake cutting ceremony can certainly make you feel that way.

To sip and toast to your forever.

Because a great cake table needs some bubbly to be complete. No one would question that, right?!? You can do it with bride and groom flutes OR coupes, both of which photograph scrumptiously.

A Pastel And Floral Explosion Of Pretty At A French Chateau

For all our pastel lovers, your heart just might skip a beat once you see this French chateau wedding. With the help of event planning extraordinaire Ceremonize, the bride’s vision of a fairytale came to life at the impeccable Château Bouffémont. From the lush and vibrant ceremony arch to the explosion of florals inside the reception space the team at Kahina Events created a dream come true. You’ll get lost in the romance of the images by Daria Lorman Photography. Head to the full gallery to check out all the French fun.

From Daria Lorman PhotographyThis beautiful French-Cameroonian wedding was celebrated at the amazing Château Bouffemont. Built-in the nineteenth century, the Château was always the setting for prestigious ceremonies, so it was the perfect fit for our couple’s glamorous celebration.

Our bride Johanna particularly loves pastel colors which she calls “fairytale colors”: light blue and pink, lilac and creamy white. Kahina Events listened to the bride and was able to understand her dreams and create an experience that even exceeded the bride’s expectations. The smell of fresh flowers, all the little details, the different rooms- everything was created with delicacy and a touch of chic.

Being in a fairytale, that’s exactly what the bride felt when she entered the main hall of the castle with her groom on their wedding day. The guests especially enjoyed an amazing Cameroonian dance performance at the castle garden at sunset and exquisite French dinner. Before hitting the dance floor and dancing all night thanks to the amazing DJ Randy.

Should You Consider Postponing Your Wedding Due to COVID-19? Here’s What the Experts Think.

For every person being affected by the ever-evolving COVID-19 pandemic… we see you, we support you, we feel you and we’re here for you. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is encouraging social distancing and restricting large gatherings, sadly, many weddings that were planned to take place in the next 3 months will need to be postponed to a later date. If you’re a bride or groom who’s reading this – inhale a deep breath and exhale all that negativity, fear and concern you’re feeling right now. If that doesn’t work, there’s no shame in breaking out the wine before noon – ’cause let’s be honest, you deserve it!

Let’s take this one day at a time. We promise it’s going to be okay. Everything is going to work out and you’re going to say those beautiful “I do’s” to your forever person soon. Whether it be just you two on your original date or later with all your friends and family surrounding you (or both!) No matter what, love wins, and all these challenging times you’ve had to face together will make that moment all the more special.

Besides your S. O., the most important people you can count on to navigate these uncertain waters are your superheroes (aka, your wedding vendors). Trust us, they want to do everything they can to make this process easier and less stressful for you. So many vendors are bending over backwards to give you guidance, emotional support, find new dates that work for you and your guests, and are generously compromising and changing their policies to make your dream wedding a reality. Lean on them, ask them for support… just keep in mind how much they’re going through right now as well, they’re feeling it just as much – so please be kind, patient and understanding.

Our goal is to answer as many questions you have with regard to postponing your date and all the confusing logistics that come with doing so. And for that, we reached out to our amazing LBB members to give you their expert opinion and advice during this incredibly difficult and uncertain time.

Should I postpone my wedding?

“Unfortunately, any couple whose wedding was planned for sometime in the next 3 months needs to postpone and reschedule the wedding for a later date. As much as weddings matter, people matter more. And it’s our social responsibility to make sure we’re keeping not just our loved ones safe, but the community at large. Couples will still get to celebrate and that is still so important, but right now it’s more important that we think about the greater good and keeping others safe.”

“As hard as it might feel, please postpone. It will ultimately save you undue stress by trying to “make it work” – since everything is changing so rapidly, it will bring you peace of mind in knowing your date has been postponed to later in the year. Also, as hard as it might feel, still plan something for you and your partner on your originally scheduled date. Cook a really special meal at home, get dressed up for it, drink champagne, take & share lots of selfies and photos. Still take the time to celebrate, but in a way that makes sense given the current state.”Krista Marie Photography, San Francisco Bay Area

“Any weddings planned for the next 3 months need to get postponed unless it’s a local elopement (with just the two of you). But even any weddings beyond 3 months need to start thinking about postponement. Any weddings that require people to travel (especially international destination weddings) should consider postponement or adjusting locations. Any weddings over 50 guests will want to start thinking about postponing or downsizing. But beyond the type of wedding you’re having, it’s important to also assess how you feel. Your level of comfort and fear (for yourself and your guests) will play a big factor in your decision to postpone. If you want your wedding to be 100% safe, you’re going to have to postpone until things have calmed down and you’re no longer putting people in danger.”

Where do I begin if I need to postpone?

“Begin the process of rescheduling as soon as possible. All of your vendors may not be available on the same future date, but choose your top 4 or 5 and see if you can get them to align. The remaining will fall into place and the community is working together to assist with referrals whenever possible.”Premier Planning Services, Inc., Minnesota

“Stay positive and do your best to stay calm, this unfortunate situation is beyond your control. If you are forced to reschedule know this is for the best interest of you, your family and friends. Postpone rather than cancel, you can still have the wedding of your dreams and your vendors will make that happen.”

While this situation is very challenging, don’t panic. Trust your vendor team and know that we are all doing everything we can to help you reschedule and still have the amazing wedding that you’ve been dreaming of. And stay focused on the end result. When all is said and done, you will get through this married, which is really the entire reason you are planning your wedding in the first place.” – Pure Luxe Bride, Charleston, SC

What are some things vendors are doing to help couples who are thinking about postponing?

“We have offered date changes with no change fees, to any available date in the remaining 2020 year as well as any in 2021.”

“We have been affected by 2 postponements, 1 full cancellation and 3 pending postponements. These are very tough conversations to have with our brides, we feel for you! Being the advocate and trusted partner of these couples is what we pride ourselves in the most during such an uncertain time. We’ve been able to successfully place “holds” on new dates should the couple decide to postpone as the event draws near and have had success in transferring all contracts to the new dates. We are beyond grateful for our vendor team for working with us swiftly to put our client’s minds at ease.” Pure Luxe Bride, Charleston, SC

“We have several weddings that we are working to reschedule. We are trying to do as much of the legwork and vendor communications as possible to alleviate the stress on our couples.”

“We have 14 events from now til the end of May. We are thankful to say that almost all of our brides are postponing. We are currently waiving any change fees – and moving retainers over to the new dates. We are asking for a bit of flexibility as brides consider new dates as many of the “in season Saturdays” are already taken. This is just an unprecedented time in our industry and it seems as though everyone from our couples to the vendors are handling it with as much grace and kindness as possible. We are all in this together.” – Cody & Tiffany from Hunter Ryan Photography, Naples, FL

“All my events and weddings are getting postponed to the fall at the earliest or to next year. It’s a stressful time for everyone. And because we just don’t know what will happen, the uncertainty is difficult to deal with. There is a lot we can’t control, but what we can control is how we want to move forward. There are always solutions and we’re working towards creating and coming up with the best ones for our clients.”

What should I be keeping in mind when making my decision to postpone or not? Guest count? Location? Age range?

My biggest concern is guest count and age range. We love our parents and grandparents. They want to be there for us in our big day — but putting them at risk is simply not worth it on the long run. If you’re postponing to a new date, and confirming a date once restrictions are lifted, you’ll have much more clarity on where it can take place, guest counts, etc.”Krista Marie Photography, San Francisco Bay Area

“I think location with regards to any government mandates is important. Guest count is also a factor for the same reasons, and elderly guests or families with small children should also be taken into account”

“The venues would be my first call for available dates. Then your next top 4-5 vendors. Be open to a Friday or Sunday. If a Friday or Sunday are not desirable, be open to a winter wedding or a spring/summer 2021 wedding.” Premier Planning Services, Inc., Minnesota

How can I politely inform my guests of my postponed wedding and new date?

“Hopefully your guests will understand. This is growing exponentially on a daily basis and events are being cancelled daily. My suggestion would be to call those closest to you and let them know directly. For others, you could send an e-card via email that lets them know, as well as let’s them know that you are checking in with them & thinking about their own families during such a trying time. Krista Marie Photography, San Francisco Bay Area

“If you have a wedding website, first renew the domain (most expire in a year). Then, update the website with all information regarding a new date. Draft an e-mail / text message to your guests informing them that for their safety and yours you have decided to postpone. Let them know you’ve successfully rescheduled to a new date and that your wedding website will be updated with any further information.”

“For most couples, email will be the easiest way to communicate to guests about a postponement or cancellation. But, it’s also important that you update your wedding website and make calls to anyone close to you or those that don’t check email. Everyone knows what’s going on in the world, so no one will be surprised. Just be honest, give them the information they need and let them know that you’ll keep them updated with any future information (if applicable). Guests will understand and will likely be thankful that you’re being proactive and thinking about their safety.”

“Many stationers are offering free digital resources to inform guests of a postponement. If possible, sending out an email or mailing a new date announcement is going to be the easiest for the couples. And also be sure to indicate the change of date on the wedding website, so that everything is consistent.”

“Everyone will understand! This does NOT need to be explained in any wordy ways. A simple “due to the current circumstances we all find ourselves in, we will safely choose a later date for our celebration” something simple.”

“I believe guests are expecting to hear — they WANT to know, and they will be understanding. I think using an email as the main platform and perhaps an instagram post as a follow up. Telephone calls for the elderly – it’s best if they hear it directly from the bride and groom. An email could be along these lines:

To our Dearest Loved Ones,

We have made the difficult decision to move our wedding to a later date, due to the current health threats. We love you all dearly and our collective safety is our highest priority. We look forward to celebrating our wedding when all of our guests are able to attend and enjoy the experience to the fullest. We will be in touch as soon as we have more information about when that will be.

Thank you so much for all of your support, love and understanding.”

What organizational strategies should I be doing in order to continue my wedding planning process? Even if i’m not getting married in the next 3 months?

“Start by re-reading your contracts and understand what you originally agreed to. And then talk to your vendors and find out what happens if you postpone/cancel. Keep a list of the information for each vendor so you can easily reference it as needed. This sheet will also help if/when you start discussing new dates so you can keep track of who is available on which dates. Once you have a new date or you cancel with a vendor, make sure you get a new proposal and contract amendment with that information. For those not postponing or cancelling at this time but have a wedding this year, it’s important to start thinking about a plan B. Start thinking about postponement or cancellation in case you need to make that decision so you know what you want to do. Get that same information from your vendors, so that you’re ready if/when the time comes. And for any vendors you haven’t contracted but are talking to, make sure you have a discussion about their policies and you feel comfortable with them before you sign. Given the state of things and the uncertainty, you need to be make sure you’re covered and you understand what could happen if postponement or a cancellation has to happen.”

Be sure that all of your contracted vendors are available on a new rescheduled date before committing. I’ve heard from a handful of vendors that were given no say in the new date. Couples did not check with them before choosing the new date, forcing a cancellation rather than a postponement”

“There is going to be an influx of weddings for Fall / Winter 2020 due to the amount of reschedules, so current clients who are booked and actively planning at this time should continue to secure vendors. Some vendors will begin to transfer dates which means less vendor availability even for non-peak dates like Fridays and Sundays. Keep booking your vendor team to ensure you’re getting the best vendors to fit your style and budget.”

We hope advice this helps you in some way. Please reach out to us if there’s anything we can personally do to make this process a little easier, we’re here for you every step of the way. We’re in this together and we’re going to get through this!

Rustic Brides Will Fall in Love With This Stunning Ranch Wedding

The softness and romance of ranch weddings will always hold a special place in our SMP hearts. From snow capped mountains to enchanting meadows, to lush blooms by Newberry Brothers – the pretty planned by Bella Design & Planning is truly endless, see it all, captured by Jessica Lorren Photography at the full gallery!

From Bella Design & PlanningAs far as fairy-tale wedding venues go, a ranch compound of national park-style guest lodges and log cabins that even Ralph Lauren would look twice at is hard to beat. Add to that a gorgeous vista of towering snow-capped peaks, lush mountain meadows, and crystalline waters and you have Brittany and Alex’s wedding destination.

The bride and groom are focused on sustainability in their lives. Denver resident Brittany Kim would much prefer to ditch the wedding decor if it means reducing the carbon footprint on such a precious natural environment.

When Campbell approached her client with the idea of sharing tents, toilets, and even transportation with two other lucky brides— Jill Shackelford, and Bizzy Gart— whose weddings occurred, respectively, one day after and one week after Kim’s nuptials, Brittany was more than happy to initiate the conversation.

“We should all be saying ‘I Do’ to recycling, reusing, composting, and carpooling!” she said. “This day should not about the dress, the hair, or the flowers. It’s really about doing what’s right for the environment.

How To Help Out Small Businesses During Social Distancing

We’re experiencing a tricky time that is fairly unprecedented. The idea of social distancing makes every extravert cringe, every newly established homeschool mom have a small panic inside — and devastatingly, every small business owner is wondering if they’ll be able to ride the storm.

The thing that sets this economic event aside from ANY other economic event in history is the fact that, even though we can’t physically communicate in person, we can still communicate online.

And for small businesses across the world, that is the silver lining.

So here’s the rallying cry! Our wedding brand works with vendors across the country, so we’re seeing first hand how event cancelations, changing dates, and restricted services are stifling projected growth. We’re doing everything we can to help, and if you need help please reach out! Our team is working extra hard during this time to think through and act on helping the people who were bold enough to step out on their own and create beautiful things. After all, that’s how we started!

You’ve seen it all over your feeds and we’re joining in on the call! Support your favorite small businesses! Here are a few ideas to help you along the way.

1. Reach Out

This can go without saying, but reach out to your friends and family who you know have looming overheads to cover, inventory to store and employees to care for. These brave people could use even the smallest gesture of intentionality.  It can be some snail mail, a text or even a DM! Ask them what they need, and see what you can do to help.

2. Shop Online

If you have a friend who does stationary work, maybe now’s a good time to order some personal cards and envelopes, or heck even your Christmas cards! There are a lot of clothing stores that have an online presence, so snag a shirt or two. Know that the things you order may not come immediately in perfect timing, but any purchase you make helps keep them afloat when people can’t come to their physical stores anymore.

3.  Supporting Trade Business

These guys are seemingly easier to support because of the lack of storefront, but they feel the hurt too! What services do you use? If you can keep using them, do! Whether it’s a bug guy who comes and sprays your house biweekly or an electrician who fixes your lights, don’t overlook these small business owners. They’ve got employees and overhead they’re having to cover as well, so any little project you can have done goes a long way.

4. Supporting Food Businesses

The local restaurant industry is perhaps getting hit the hardest. Not only do they have locational overhead, but they have food that’s not getting eaten, employees that aren’t getting hours and kitchens that aren’t getting used. Stock up on some gift cards! Maybe go ahead and grab your Christmas presents early this year and get a couple of gift cards for your friends and family. Or, if you’re really feeling generous, think about buying some gift cards to give out to families or other small business owners who are feeling the economic hurt. It’s cash for the restaurant and a meal for a family who needs it. Whatever you can do helps.

5. Loving On Your Favorite Coffee Shop

Along with restaurants, these guys are feeling the loss from social distancing. If you’re a regular at a certain coffee spot, you can also get a gift card! Or, now that you’re making coffee at home, check to see if you can buy and coffee beans from your favorite spot! A lot of local coffee places have their own roast these days, and even though you can’t go in for your morning latte, stocking up on some beans can help mend the gap while you’re away….and it makes your home coffee taste much, much better.

6. Using Your Social Media

To our point earlier, it is honestly an odd time of isolation because while we’re physically in different places, we’re still all in this together online, and it’s an open forum of discussion. We’ve seen so many beautiful things unfold online and watched SO many people support those around them, and honestly, it’s the one good thing to come out of all of this. So we encourage you to join in! Your social media is NEVER too small or too personal to make a difference. A little shoutout to your favorite local kid’s store or monogramming shop goes a long way to keep supporting them top of mind.

7. Pay For It Anyways

This one is harder to suggest, but it’s one that makes a big difference. We’ve seen this idea floating around Instagram, and with sobering respect, we’re adding it to the list. When economies feel unstable like this, the first response is to put a pause on spending and cut expenses that aren’t necessary.  The idea of “pay for it anyways” is, in essence, honoring appointments, services and other things that were scheduled before this happened and even if the service isn’t provided due to the call for social distancing, paying for the service anyways. If it’s already allotted in your budget and you can handle incurring the cost, this is an amazing way to help keep money flowing through the economy.

If you have a nail appointment you don’t feel comfortable attending anymore, pay for it anyways.
If you have a dentist appointment you no longer can go to, pay for it anyways
If you have a hair appointment that you’re no longer getting, pay for it anyways
If you have a home service that you want to cancel for safety, pay for it anyways

We’re all in this thing together, but this time more than any other — we are all able to unite around each other digitally and continue rallying around those who are affected most.

You’ll Dig The Dreamy Desert Vibes At This La Quinta Country Club Wedding

We’re currently crushing over the dreamy desert vibes at this Palm Springs wedding. With warm-toned details, rambling florals, and an open-air reception complete with a canopy nestled head table, it’s easy to see why! Set at the La Quinta Country Club, the team at Haroun Events made all of this couple’s wedding dreams come true. Kindra Browne pulled it all together seamlessly, and Alicia Mink was there to perfectly capture all the pretty. Head to the full gallery to fall in love with all the details.

From Haroun EventsOur goals are always to seek inspiration from where love is being celebrated. Palm Springs provided us with a vast library of colors and textures. Handmade paper, copper and sand toned envelopes, and whimsical illustrations, by Nicolette from Isidore & Augustine Fine Paper, were all carefully brought together to produce the most appropriate yet unique suite for this wedding.

For their bridal party of 14 lovely, bridesmaids and 14 dashing groomsmen we paired romantic mauve florals embellished with desert-inspired terracotta and peach-toned ribbons. Courtney and Colson decided on classic yet striking silhouettes for this bridal party. Fun-loving, exceptionally elegant, and unbelievably kind this seemingly large wedding party made so much sense for our full of life clients.

With twinkling chandeliers overhead, glowing candles throughout, and warm bistro lights wrapped around palm trees the picturesque Californian mosaic was brought to life! A sweep of rambling florals in hammered gold and stone vessels provided texture and color, framed with gorgeous warm-toned linens created tables that were as inviting and functional as they were precious. A long head table framed with a draped cabana nestled the open space perfectly. Live music was the perfect finishing touch to this experiential evening!

9 St. Patty’s Day Ideas To Celebrate At Home

It’s no secret that St. Patrick’s day is going to look a little different this year. So while we may not hit up a pub for a green beer with 100 of your closest friends, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the holiday!

This is a very unique situation to celebrate St. Patty’s day at home this year. And while it does look a little different then the normal celebrations of going out, there are a few little things you can do to make it feel a little special. With the 14-day isolation request, any effort to make one day different than another goes a long, loooooonng way!

If you’ve got kids at home, if you’re working from home or even if you’re making the small commute to work every day, don’t let a holiday pass without some small celebration!

1. Start The Day With A St. Patrick’s Breakfast

To avoid extra trips to the grocery store, take inventory of what you have in the pantry and find way’s to make it festive! You can dye your pancakes green, add some extra veggies to a frittata, turn some yogurt green — it’s a small gesture that goes a long way

2. Still Wear Your Green

If there’s ONE thing we’d recommend during this social quarantine — get dressed every day. When everything feels out of wack, doing as many normal things as possible makes a huge difference. And one of those things is getting dressed every morning! And just because you won’t see many people outside of your 4 walls (or you’ll see them at a minimum of a 6ft distance) doesn’t mean you can’t be festive! Get your green on, people!

3. Play Some Festive Music

When you’re home every day for an extended period of time, things start to feel monotonous. Even your absolute favorite playlist or background TV channel can feel a little tiring after a while, so why not switch things up for a holiday? Try out a Celtic instrumental playlist! Have you heard of people RAVING over Celtic Women? Check them out! It’s a small gesture that makes the day feel a little more special.

4. Watch A Movie Set In Ireland

This holiday is as special as you make it, and it could be that you make it as simple as a day where you watch a movie set in Ireland! While travel is restricted, you can get a dose of new scenery through the cinematic lens. (it’s not the same, but we’re keeping things positive around here!)

5. Make A Special Cup Of Coffee

It’s time for the annual “no kids you can’t have a sip, this is mommy’s special coffee.” Here’s a recipe, enjoy. (responsibly)

6. Make A Special Twist On Dinner

While people are bulk buying supplies like crazy, it’s good to have a couple of pantry staple recipes on hand to feed the fam. Thankfully, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on celebrating holidays! It just means you get a little creative with it. Shepherds pie, for example, needs only flour, butter, eggs, potatoes, cheese, ground beef, cream, pepper and peas! It’s festive, but made with many staples you already have in your freezer, refrigerator or pantry!

7. What You’ve All Been Waiting For — Learn To Make Your Favorite Irish Cocktail

Whether you’re a green beer gal, an Irish whiskey Manhattan man or you like some scotch on the rocks — dive deep this year and learn to make your own favorite Irish cocktail! So not only will you not miss out on some of the fun this holiday, but it’s a skill you can repeat and use whenever you feel like it! (Check out these cocktails, they’re pretty good!)

8. Play A Round Of Twenty-Five “Ireland’s National Card Game”

Top off the evening with a round of fun that’s a step outside of your normal game routine. This game is apparently an Irish tradition and it takes a simple deck of cards, so try your hand at it! (here are the rules!)

9. Join In A Shamrock Hunt!

We’ve seen this idea floating around social media, and it’s a great one! The idea is to put a shamrock of ANY kind on your front door. Think cut out a piece of paper, wreath, anything! Then take your family on a little walk around the neighborhood to hunt down and count out as many shamrocks as you can find! It gets you out of the house for an activity without any unnecessary interactions.

This Elegant Idaho Wedding Ceremony Actually Floated On Water!

This couple said “I Do” with a view! You’re going to fall head over heels for this wedding ceremony that Jaime Johnson Events masterfully orchestrated on a floating barge! The couple was greeted back on land by their sweet Pup, Rags, and a tented reception overflowing with an abundance of greenery and white florals crafted by Garden Of Eden Floral Design. All the love of the heartfelt celebration was beautifully captured by Anna Peters Photography. You do not want to miss all the fun in the full gallery!

From Anna PetersThis September wedding for Brett and Jacob was one for the books – set on the stunning property at Gozzer Ranch Golf & Lake Club. “On the water” was the foundation of their wedding vision, inspired by Brett’s family home on Lake Coeur D’Alene and Jacob’s work as he owns several commercial fishing boats in Alaska.

Guests gathered on the resort’s dock to board one of the Coeur d’ Alene Cruises fleet boats that would carry them across the lake to the ceremony site. The rockstar planning team at Jaime Johnson Events took on an incredible logistics challenge bringing in a floating barge that would serve as the ceremony site.

After the couple made it official on their floating ceremony site, the party shifted to land – a tented cocktail hour and reception set higher up on the property. Guests danced the night away before returning once more and boating back to their hotel rooms. The result was an unforgettable day full of laughter, adventure, and incredible style.
