One of my favorite presents to give on Christmas is an everyday luxury—something that the recipient will use every day but wouldn't necessarily buy for themselves. These DIY Fingerpaint Modern Tile Coasters from the TODAY Show fall under that category. Pretty yet thoughtful, these coasters make for the perfect gift from the kiddos.

instructions

step-1Mix your colors and put into small plastic dishes. Try to make a range of similar shades to keep the colors from getting too muddy when your little one is mixing them around.

step-2Set your little one in their highchair (if they're old enough to sit up independently). Let them dip their fingers in the paint and get messy painting the coasters. Stay close and keep an eye out for stray fingers, especially if they're making a beeline for the mouth. You may want to rotate and swap out coasters every so often. If they're barely swatting at them, try putting some paint directly on the coaster and letting them splash it around for more color.

step-3Let the paint dry. You can let baby doodle with a sharpie marker for a more abstract look, then tape off a triangle in each corner with the painter's tape. Fill in the triangle shape with the adhesive pen and let dry 10-15 minutes.

step-4When the adhesive is tacky to the touch, gently press on gold leaf over the whole triangle. Remove the backing and press the gold leaf more firmly on with your fingers and brush off any excess leaf.

step-5Remove the painter's tape, then cover each coaster in 1-2 coats of mod podge to seal them. Let dry 1/2 hour.

step-6Add 4 self-stick foam rounds to the bottom of each coaster to protect your surfaces, and you're done!

Tip: For more distinct colors, try painting the coasters in a few short sessions, one for each color, letting them dry in between session.
