DIY Rope Bracelet

To say that I’m obsessed with this next DIY would be the understatement of the century. Who knew a little bit of rope and a handful of embroidery thread could be so stinkin’ adorable? Plus, they’re so easy you could whip one up for everyone you know. They make for an adorable (totally) inexpensive, gift and can be totally customized to suit color preferences. Like a friendship bracelet for adults!

MaterialsCotton rope
Embroidery thread in various colors
Neon silk cord (we found ours at Joann Fabrics)
Gold jump rings
Gold toggle clasp
Needle nose pliers
Scissors
Hot glue gun & glue sticks

instructions

step-1Cut a piece of rope to about 12” (or long enough to go most of the way around your wrist when made into an oval shape). String on 2 gold jump rings. Hot glue the cut ends of the rope together to form a rope loop.

step-2Press the center of the loop together to form a squeezed oval shape. The glued ends of the rope should be in the center of the pressed part and there should be one gold ring on each end of the oval.

step-3Take a length of embroidery thread and glue one end to the rope. Begin wrapping the thread around the squeezed section of both ropes. Keep wrapping until the center 1.5” of the rope oval is covered. To change colors as you wrap, just knot in a new color thread, trim the excess thread, and keep wrapping. When you reach the other end, glue the thread to the rope.

step-4Cut a 4” piece of silk cord and wrap it around the wrapped thread section, parallel to the rope. Hot glue in place and trim any excess cord.

step-5Use the needle nose pliers to open the gold jump rings slightly and add the clasp pieces to the rings. Use the pliers to close the rings again. Enjoy your new bracelet!

Intimate Kansas Park Wedding

For this Kansas couple, paying tribute to Lawrence, the town where they fell in love, was an important part of their wedding day. The decision to work with local vendors proved to be a huge success. Antique pink peonies from Pendleton’s Country Market and three beautiful cakes from Sweetcakes Bakery were the perfect way to celebrate not only their love, but a beautiful place to live. See the rest of the lovely details in the gallery.

From The Bride…Cooper and I met in Lawrence, Kansas in 2009. Lawrence is a quirky college town with a flourishing local music scene, great restaurants, and a lot of heart. It is a beautiful place to live, and from the beginning, Cooper and I knew we wanted to highlight the town where we met and fell in love. In keeping with our “Townie” theme, we selected historic locales to serve as the backdrop for our day. Our intimate ceremony was held at South Park, founded in 1854, and we hosted our reception the historic theater, Liberty Hall, the name of which comes from a speech by Abraham Lincoln in which he called Lawrence “the cradle of liberty.”

We were lucky enough to work with about 90% local vendors. It was important to both of us that we support our local economy as much as possible, and this infusion of local goods and services made our day truly unique. From the beginning, I knew I wanted local peonies, and our florist, Pendleton’s Country Market provided the beautiful antique pink peonies. My bouquet also had white hydrangea and baby’s breath, and my hair piece had white tea roses and baby’s breath. The bridesmaids carried pink peonies with organically-placed fern pieces. The light pink peonies added a necessary bright and springy feel to our otherwise dark and sophisticated palette of black, dark blue and gold. I wore a full-lace gown by Ivy and Aster, with an open back and covered buttons. The bridesmaids picked their own navy blue dresses. The groom wore a J. Crew suit, and his groomsmen wore a suit of their choice.

We had a small ceremony with 50 of our closest friends and immediate family in front of a fountain, surrounded by pink rose bushes. A string quartet played Gabriel Faure’s “Pavane” as my father and I walked down the aisle. My oldest sister could not make it to the wedding, as she was 8 months pregnant, so we “skyped” her in to participate in the ceremony. My maid of honor’s mother officiated, focusing her marriage address on the history of our town and the value of civic spirit, public spaces, and community. In keeping with this, my dear friend Jordan wrote a small piece about marriage equality:

“Kelly and Cooper also ask you to remember that the legal institution of marriage is a privilege in our society that not everyone shares. Beyond the social and economic security that the institution currently offers, marriage for many people represents a commitment to love, trust, and partnership. The desires for companionship, growth, hope, support, laughter, and a person to call home are not limited by one’s sexual orientation or gender identification. Kelly and Cooper feel so lucky as a couple to legally and publicly express their love and commitment before you today and ask that you keep all people who are fighting for the same right in your thoughts. We ask you to take a moment of silence, for these and any other thoughts and prayers you carry.”

One of the most special moments of our ceremony was when my friend Molly recited an excerpt from The Little Prince, even Cooper shed a tear as she reminded us all, “The essential is invisible to the eye… you become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.” Finally, Cooper and I wrote our own vows. I cannot say this enough to any future bride or groom: write your own vows! It was such an honest, beautiful moment that I will always cherish.

After the ceremony, our bridal party walked the five blocks from South Park to our reception venue. As we walked down Lawrence’s main strip, Massachusetts St., people whooped and cheered congratulations. This was one of my favorite parts of our wedding, and the pictures really capture the spirit of downtown Lawrence.

The tables at our reception were decorated with peony buds in mini milk jars. The tables were scattered with homemade gold and white origami cats, which served as a symbol for our party favors: a donation to our local animal shelter. We had custom-made chalkboards for the wedding program, schedule, menu and seating chart, and I made chalkboards for our cakes.

We had three cakes made by Sweetcakes Bakery. Our flavors: Dark chocolate with local raspberry filling and chocolate buttercream, Vanilla Cake with local strawberry filling and Tahitian vanilla butter cream, and Lemon Cake with fresh blueberry preserves and lemon buttercream. This local one-woman company uses eggs from her friend’s chickens, organic sugar and flour, and local berries when seasonal. Fresh peony buds adorned the cakes, and I made gold marquee letters in our initials to add sparkle to the table.

For our first dance, an old bandmate performed “I Love You for Sentimental Reasons.” And when the dance party started, we had a local DJ, DeeJay Maudrey Hepburn play oldies music. She worked with me at the University of Kansas radio station, KJHK.

Romantic and Elegant Lubbock Texas Wedding at The Historic Watson Building

I am pretty darn sure I’ll be spending my entire day devouring each and every stunning image sitting in this gallery from Marcie Meredith Photography. Because not only is there a whole lot of pretty tucked in that gorgeous collection of images, but there is also a whole lot of love. The result? A wedding I simply can’t get enough of.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/100373223 600 338]

From the Bride…James and I met during our first year of medical school in Lubbock, Texas and started dating two years later. Living in Lubbock was such an important time in both of our lives that we knew there was no better place to get married. We spent 7 months planning our wedding while interviewing and applying for residency positions across the United States. Because of the difficult process of “Matching” into residency, we were not sure if we would be living in the same city, let alone the same state, once we were married. It was a bit stressful. Regardless, we wanted our wedding day to be a celebration of the love that we have for each other and our family and friends.

We found the Kent R. Hance Chapel to be intimate with a sense of elegance that set the mood for the evening. We also wanted the ceremony to be fun, in matching with our personalities. Our sign in “book” was a wooden Texas (we’re moving to Georgia and wanted to take a piece of Texas with us.) My Daddy and I fist bumped before he gave me away, and James and I walked out to “You’ve Got What I Need” by Freddie Scott.

The reception was located at the Watson Building with beautiful hardwood floors and tall ceilings.
We had 3-foot diameter balloons floating high above the tables with ivory ribbon hanging down. This was definitely my favorite touch to our decorations. Lou Dee’s Floral also created gorgeous arrangements with champagne, blush, raspberry and gold colors in both the reception and ceremony spaces.

The evening was spent out on the dance floor, and enjoying laughter and love with our friends and family. It could not have been any better. Most of all, the best part is we’re now married and get to spend the rest of our lives together!

Destination Mexico Wedding at Generations Riviera Maya

I treat gorgeous destination weddings like this one from Fondly Forever Photography like a little virtual vacation. I allow myself a little extra time to really get lost in all the lovely images and devour every pretty detail. Before I know it, I feel like I am there, with my toes in the sand listening to these two cuties say I do, and you can join me in the day dream right here.

From Fondly Forever PhotographyJeannie + Neal live in LA but wanted a destination wedding to celebration their big day. After touring around the east coast of Mexico, they decided on a brand new hotel in Riviera Maya called Generations. Jeannie is a makeup artist and not only did her makeup, but all of her bridesmaids makeup as well! She is one of the sweetest people I know and her smile radiated the entire day! The wedding ceremony took place in a small chapel right off the beach and the reception was in a pier over the water. I realize this wedding does not have as many details as some of the weddings you feature but I thought it might be a good fit for your destination blog.

From the Bride…What was your inspiration for the day/How did you make the day about the two of you?

– We wanted to have a simple, light-hearted, stress-free day surrounded by family and friends. At our ceremony, we wanted all our guests to be present with us and not worry about taking photos, so we decided to have an unplugged wedding. It was one of the best decisions we made. Everyone was in the moment with us and we felt so much love in the room. We wanted our vows to be meaningful, but I also knew that if we surprised each other with our own vows at the altar, I would cry and not be able to say my part. So in order to ease my nervousness, Neal and I decided to write our vows together and take turns saying each line to each other. I love that we started our marriage as a team.

What is your most memorable moment from the day?
– Looking out and seeing our closest friends and family all under one roof. Over the years, we’ve hung out with them individually and in small groups, but never all together in one place. That moment comes once in a lifetime and it made our hearts happy knowing that they all traveled there to celebrate with us.

– What DIY projects did you do for your wedding?
I wanted to stay away from DIY (aka stress) projects as much as possible, so I limited the DIY project to 1. We made our own fabric bouquets/boutonnieres from scratch. It was a long process filled with good times, laughter, and love – all my bridesmaids and my Man of Honor worked so hard on them, I’m so grateful.

Elegant Florida Keys Wedding at The Caribbean Resort

I opened this wedding hours ago, and my jaw is still sitting pretty on my desk. Rightfully so, I suppose, because this wedding is the definition of jaw-droppingly gorgeous. From that ridiculously stunning Hayley-Paige gown to the elegant reception, this gallery from Bob Care Photography is beyond beyond. See it all here.

From the Bride and Groom…How did you meet? Eric and I met in High school. He went away to Tennessee for college and I went to the University of Florida. We were friends through high school and college and started dating once we both settled in Orlando after college. .

Tell us a little bit about you two: What do you love about each other?
Eric and I have spent the last 4 years living in Orlando surrounded by almost all of our family and a ton of great friends. We have a 110 lb mastiff named Jax that we are crazy about and both work for the same amazing sales organization.

Karly: One of the things I love most about Eric is his selfless nature. He is the most amazing and kind person I know and constantly challenges me to be the best version of myself. I also love our shared love for the beach, live music and college football. (even though he’s an avid FSU fan and I went to UF J )
Eric: First, I think Karly is absolutely gorgeous! She is one of the nicest people I have ever met and constantly pushes me to be a better person. She is thoughtful, funny, and extremely driven. It seems we can always be in a good mood if we are near live music or the ocean. Most importantly, we trust each other and can always rely on each other.

What makes you a great match? Any great stories?
As I mentioned earlier, Eric and I met in high school and spent many years as friends before we started dating. We’ve built an incredibly strong foundation based on friendship, mutual respect and admiration for one another which has led to a really amazing love story that we are still writing. J

Where are you two from, and why did you choose your location and venue?
Eric and I were both born and raised in Melbourne, FL. We grew up going to the beach every weekend and we both vacationed regularly in the Keys with our families. We love being outdoors and knew we wanted a tropical setting for our wedding so Islamorada was an easy decision.

Please share some details about the wedding and the planning process. Some ideas: Choice of location, your theme and/or colors, meaningful details you incorporated, DIY projects, your favorite elements.

We chose the Caribbean Resort for a few different reasons.

#1- The scenery is absolutely beautiful! #2- Our wedding guests rented out all of the gorgeous houses on property which allowed us to have a “wedding weekend” rather than just a wedding day. We were going for an elegant beach theme with blush, white and champagne as our primary colors. Islamorada has so much natural beauty so we tried not to overdo it with the décor. We used a mix of baby’s breath and roses for flowers and had lanterns set up all over the grounds. We strung bulb lights across the dance floor and danced under the stars all night which was always a dream of mine. One of my favorite touches of décor was the “hydration station” which allowed our guests to serve themselves out of old whiskey barrels.

What were your favorite moments and/or special memories from the day?
One of the best moments of the day for us was the ceremony. Eric’s cousin Kevin Deck married us in front of all of our friends and family and it was pretty amazing to have someone we respect and admire so much, share that moment with us.

Intimate Kennebunkport Wedding

A few years back, I attended a sweet seaside wedding in Kennebunkport and fell absolutely in love with the locale. It’s charming and oh-so-cozy. So when this stunner from Arielle Doneson came across my desk? I couldn’t wait to click through the gallery. Opposite of the sea, this forest fete at Earth at Hidden Pond was a perfect fit for these two foodies. Packed with beautifully artisanal treats, adorable DIYs and lots of smiles, you can see more right here.

From Arielle DonesonNestled among the blooming lupins and birch trees of Kennebunkport, ME, is the award winning resort, Hidden Pond. Home to farm to table restaurant, Earth, with James Beard award-winning chef, Ken Oringer at the helm producing artisanal food that is as beautiful as it is tasty. For architects Juliet and Jared who are also studied foodies, it was the perfect setting for their intimate nuptials.

Joined by their closest family and friends, Juliet and Jared’s wedding had the feel of going to a friend’s Summer home for a spectacular evening complete with assorted succulent centerpieces that they grew themselves, fragrant peony bouquets and the wild beauty of Earth’s on site garden. Being creatives, Juliet and Jared’s wedding was complete with DIY designed stationery suite, wildflower seed packets, and other touches that felt completely at home among the rustic reclaimed wood, stone, and exposed beams of Earth’s interior. After a truly memorable meal of local delicacies (including lobster, of course!) the evening progressed to dancing and drinking under the stars, between the tiki torches and fire pit on the grounds. A truly Maine celebration if ever there was one!

Romantic Autumn Wedding at The Foundry

Bold statement alert: the gallery you’re about to click through is bar none my favorite Jen Huang wedding ever. And if you take a look back at her amazing work over the years, you’ll realize that’s a pretty big deal. With layer upon layer of rich berry tones and floral lover’s heaven a la Poppies & Posies, this Monday morning just got really, REALLY good.

[iframe https://player.vimeo.com/video/83366738 600 338]

From The Bride…My vision for the wedding design was romantic and ethereal, much as is my personal style. I’m a California girl through and through, and I wanted the wedding design to show my casual-but-funky style. Purple is both my and my husband’s favorite color, so we started our palette there, and moved on to include mint greens and rose golds.

The inspiration was vintage chic, with a lot of very soft touches to contrast with the industrial design of the space. As writers and scifi nerds, it was also very important to us to incorporate quite a few personal elements (hence the star wars table names, the vintage typewriter, the invitation addressed to Dumbledore,  and the LOTR quotes!). The aesthetic was ultimately driven by my gown, which in layers of blush silk chiffon and organza-but with a high couture design, embodied the romantic, modern fairy tale vibe I had envisioned. Because I wore blush, I wanted my bridesmaids to wear ivory, and the sweep of our collective gowns really added sense of airiness to the space.

I put together a lot of the details myself-with the help of my very patient bridesmaids-including the chalkboards and cakestands-and although it was a lot of work, the end result was better than anything I could have ever hoped for. Everything flowed together so perfectly, from the romantic twinkle lights, to the vintage sofas, to the farm tables, to the deep purple dahlias and earthy succulents. Every detail of the design was seamlessly integrated, and although nothing ever goes exactly as planned, the culmination was flawless; there isn’t a single thing I would’ve changed about my wedding day!

Annapolis Naval Academy Wedding

What happens when two U.S. Navy sweethearts tie the knot, you ask? Sit tight, lovelies because you’re about to find out. They celebrated with a Naval Academy Chapel ceremony followed by a Chesapeake Bay Beach Club reception, and the result is a classic, nautical-inspired day you don’t want to miss. See it all from Jennifer Lee’s lens right here.

From the Bride.. Jim and I met on a humid July evening in 2012 at a bar in downtown Washington DC. Once we struck up the nerve to speak to each other, we discovered how much we had in common: both originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, both in the United States Navy (I am a reservist), and we had many mutual friends in common. Our relationship progressed very quickly and we fell in love and got engaged within six months. On a trip to Italy together, Jim got down on one knee and proposed to me on top of the Vatican in Rome.

I originally wanted to elope in England or Italy, but it meant a lot to Jim to get married in front of our family and friends. What was supposed to be a small wedding quickly turned in to a large Catholic military wedding at the United States Naval Academy (Jim’s alma mater) in Annapolis, Maryland. Isn’t it funny how that happens?

Our vision for the wedding was “modern but classy nautical,” paying homage to our elegant wedding chapel and reception venue located on the water. Our reception venue, the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club, was decorated with gorgeous candelabras, cherry blossom branches, and a sunset that looked like it was painted with watercolors across the sky. Our reception unintentionally developed a definite “America” theme to it–playing Top Gun on a big screen in the background, American flags out on the dance floor, and a spur-of-the-moment rendition of “God Bless America” at one point.

The highlights of our wedding, in no particular order: the sword arch in front of the Naval Academy Chapel, the Navy officers and Jim serenading me with “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” our chicken and waffle “midnight snack,” my maid of honor’s truly epic speech, our sparkler exit, and all of our handcrafted decor.

It is a cliche to be sure, but May 3rd, 2014 was truly magical and a wonderful kick off to our adventures together as husband and wife.

Peach + Navy Flat Creek Country Club Wedding

Our gorgeous week on the LBB is soon coming to an end SMPers, but as you know, we like to go out with a bang—we wouldn’t have it any other way. This darling soiree dressed in peach and navy, it’s that ‘bang’ and so much more. Drenched in gorg florals from Virtu Floral Design, graced with a beauteous Bride in a satiny Fabulous Frocks dress, a little bit of prep and a whole lotta class, Amy Arrington made sure to snap up every lovely bit and it’s all here in the gallery.

From the beautiful Bride…Though I haven’t lived in the South for more than 10 years, I had always pictured getting married in my hometown in Georgia. Also, since my husband is from the South (Kentucky), we couldn’t have imagined a better way to capture our upbringings and commemorate such an important part of our lives than to come home to to Peachtree City for our wedding. Having both moved away and made lifelong and special friends from across the country, we were thrilled to bring all the most important people in our lives together in a place that means so much to me.

In planning our wedding, we wanted it to reflect the importance of our faith, our families, and our friends. As such, we carefully crafted our wedding ceremony to include Bible excerpts read by two sets of married friends that we cherish and hymns that have special meaning for us. We also had the ceremony officiated by our pastor from our home church in Cambridge, MA, where we met, dated, and became engaged (we have since moved to Chicago). Similarly, we wanted our reception to include personal touches reflecting our relationship and to be an atmosphere celebrating both our wedding and our friends and family who had traveled great distances to support us. A few highlights from our reception planning included our choice of wedding cake and groom’s “cake” as cookie cake and banana pudding (our respective favorites), table numbers with stories about our relationship that incorporated each number, and the last dance song as “Call Me Maybe” – an admittedly silly song that has a special story behind it from our relationship.

Lastly, our wedding day was sunny and warm – one of those perfect days that the South seems to magically create in Spring. We couldn’t have asked for anything better. Every moment from the preparations of hair and makeup with my bridesmaids in the morning to the last song of the night and our exit with sparklers for our golf cart get-away, was perfect.

Romantic Ballroom Affair at the Biltmore

Mixing a few different styles can make for the most beautiful affairs. Layered and thoughtful with modern details planned by Alexandra Kolendrianos, chic florals designed in the hands of Mindy Rice and a sense of classic seaside touches captured by Michael & Anna Costa Photography. Their images speak straight to my pretty-loving soul and there’s more to swoon in the gallery right here.

From Alexandra… Susanne & James wedding was so incredibly intimate. A non traditional ceremony set up of their favorite people surrounding them was the focal point on the La Pacifica Terrace at the Four Seasons Biltmore Santa Barbara. The ceremony was set in a circle under a beautiful structure adored in taupe lace and rich floral pullbacks. Some guests sat surrounding them and others were standing. While very elegant and sophisticated, the wedding also took on a very comfortable and earthy flow.

Lounges, candles and florals complimented the terrace, while guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres overlooking the ocean. A Spanish guitar duo was a beautiful choice for entertainment. As guests moved inside the ballroom for dinner, a fantastic 7 piece band greeted the guests. Guests were awed by the clean and elegant palette in the room. Taupe linen fabric draped the walls, wood rectangle tables with taupe lace runners were spread throughout and mixed in with round tables draped in taupe linens. Each place setting including a beautiful garden rose and ribbon accenting the letter pressed mauve colored menus. The florals were abundant and fit the tone of the evening so perfectly. Capiz shell containers filled with Muted greens, cranberry colored and dusty rose florals were eye catching and the focal point of the space. Complimenting wood bars and gorgeous cream suede lounges with wood coffee tables and abundant candle light and floral was the icing on the cake. The most beautiful romantic lighting enhanced the space giving a warm glow throughout the ballroom and on the terrace.

Congratulations to Susanne and James for an amazing and unforgettable day!

Sunlit Malibu Hills Engagement Session

It’s Friday dears and in my opinion, Fridays should be filled with the sweetest kind of love. Like say, this sunny love session from Erin Hearts Court in the hills of Malibu. Because when you combo a sweetly vintage dress from Etsy, golden curls, suspenders and chunky sweaters, it’s bound to be just that; sweet, sweet love. Soak it all up right here.

From the beautiful Bride-to-be… Matt and I are both California transplants. We have a mixture of Midwest and East Coast roots, but were both drawn to California for its breathtaking natural beauty. We met and fell in love in Los Angeles – Venice Beach to be exact. The growth of our relationship always had an incredible backdrop – the sprawling desert, the sparkling Pacific waters, a picture perfect coastline, or rocky, mountainous views. We wanted our engagement photos to capture the incredible geographic beauty of California so that we could always return in memory to this time in our lives.

We discovered the photography of Erin Hearts Court while searching for a wedding venue and fell in love with their aesthetic and ability to capture light so beautifully. After a fun hair and makeup session with the talented Matilde Campos and Allison Elliot, we drove up the Pacific Coast Highway to the hills in Malibu. Erin and Courtney made the shoot so fun and laid back. They even found a way to incorporate our beach cruisers – an important part of our life by the beach in Venice! When they sent the photos we were blown away by the way they captured the light, beauty, and fairy tale feeling of the California sun and hills.

Watercolor Wedding Inspiration Shoot

Ruth Eileen is one of our favorite photographers to work with here at SMP – not just because she is entirely lovely, but because we can pretty much bank on the fact that everything she touches turns to wedding gold. Case in point? This stunning beach inspired shoot. A collaboration with Making Me Events & a slew of other talented vendors, this is pure wedding eye candy. And there is more right here!

From Phebe from Making Me EventsOur photo shoot took place at a private beach in Massachusetts. The color scheme was inspired by the soft colors of a summer sunset. I’ve always been mesmerized at the simplicity of the sun setting, and how it can provide so many gorgeous colors independently and all at once. For this shoot, we focused on warm pinks, dull hues of peach and a pop of yellow, along with elements of bright gold to balance out the color palette. Pops of green added an unexpected element to our elegant watercolor shoot, and the beach provided the perfect backdrop as a venue for our shoot. We wanted to inspire future brides to look everywhere for inspiration and to incorporate elements of their venue that will add to the uniqueness of their wedding. Given our location we wanted to play up the fact that soft wind would be present, instead of fighting this element we decided to incorporated gorgeous chair covers that would add movement and a whimsy touch.

When planning your wedding don’t forget to add unexpected and bold elements, we’re giving you full permission to go crazy because we certainly did! We added gold faceted geometric terrariums instead of traditional vases, a gorgeous handmade Sequin Table number, and shadow boxes to hold escort cards, combined all of these elements look stunning and we were also pleased to see how it came together flawlessly. Planning something this gorgeous took an incredible team of talented vendors and I think that’s the key to fully enjoying the wedding planning journey, hire vendors who want to create something beautiful beyond your wildest dreams.
