Vintage Rock ‘n Roll Wedding by Jeremy Lawson, II

I’m not really a tattoo kind of girl myself…but I have this weird love affair with tattooed brides. Something about the rock ‘n roll style meets frilly white wedding dress just makes me happy. And THIS bride just happens to be drop dead gorgeous so the whole shebang is pure awesomeness. Jeremy Lawson, the brilliant photographer behind these images, really lucks out with his pretty, pretty brides!

jeremy lawson

Jeremy’s photographs ALWAYS give me the butterflies. And I normally say “OHHHHH!” out loud the minute that I open one of his emails. His work is just soulful. It’s got that special sauce that is so unique to Jeremy, that extra something that the finest photographs are made of. And I love that he is willing to share them with us on SMP!

Here is a list of vendors that participated in this ridiculously lovely wedding. Photography by Jeremy Lawson Photography / Dessert + Food – Hot Chocolate / Reception/Food – The Violet Hour / Hair – Sine Qua Non / Makeup – Karen Brody / Ceremony & Flowers – Asrai Garden / Photobooth – 312PhotoBooth

Thank you so much to Jeremy and his team for sending over this inspiring wedding! And to the GORGEOUS bride and groom for making me really happy. May you have many, many years that are filled to the brim with love, laughter and unabashed style.

Vintage Rock ‘n Roll Wedding by Jeremy Lawson

I fell madly in love with Jeremy Lawson’s work when we featured the oh-so-charming Iowa wedding that he shot the other day. Well, this wedding is just as great. Just as funky, just as smile inducing. Jeremy has a way about photography…his work is a little bit dark and mysterious, a little bit light and lovely. You can really see that there is a story behind every shot, a little piece of emotion in every image.  I love that.

From Jeremy…

Dan and Christine met at a restaurant in Chicago called Avec, where Christine works…in the exact spot that the last pictures shows.  They were married in a flower & home boutique called Asrai Gardens, then the reception was held down the street at a The Violet Hour an ultra-lux lounge and cocktail mecca.

Chicago Wedding At The Wooden Gallery From Artisan Events Photography

After a few days away from the Little Black Book Blog, we are raring to go with another super wedding from Artisan Events … a fantastic team of photographers based in Chicago!

Sarah & Bryan were married in Chicago at The Wooden Gallery and the Artisan Events team was there to capture all the details!

from the delightful bride, Sarah …

Bryan and I were married at the Wooden Gallery in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The gallery is a hidden gem, buried between brownstones and filled with incredible sculptures, paintings, photographs, an antique pulpit and vintage bar too. Behind the unassuming metal door, the gallery’s artwork set a neutral background for the warm eggplant and pewter touches which were found throughout the wedding celebration. The gallery was perfect for us – creative and cozy, fun and festive – very intimate and very US, it set the tone for the year of planning that would follow.

Next, the dress. With no preconceived notions, the Junko Yoshioka dress was the last dress of the day (of about 30) that I tried on… It was the only one I danced around in!

With the venue and the dress in place, the rest of the wedding details developed around an organic, vintage romance. The evening wedding started when Bryan and our hosts/esses greeted guest with Spanish Cava and lead them into the ceremony area. The decor was warm and rich – eggplant and pewter – while rose petals and candelabras adorned the aisle. Some guests sat while most stood.

My entrance was from the loft above – holy stairs! After sharing vows which we had prepared, we welcomed everyone to share our favorite brew: a Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat before dinner and dancing. A live band exceeded everyone’s expectations and the dance floor remained full throughout the evening. In lieu of favors, we made a donation to the Midwest Labrador Retriever Rescue. This final touch was again, so US.

What an absolutely wonderful wedding!!

Illinois Winery Wedding From Jeffrey and Julia Woods

When Jeffrey and Julia Woods send us a wedding, we know it’s going to be brimming with beauty and emotion! Today is no exception.

Ryan and Anna met in shop class during high school …

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

… the rest was destiny …

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

from Anna …

We met in high school, during shop class! I was the senior girl who wanted to learn something different (or take an easy class…) and Ryan was a junior taking a class with the rest of his buddies. Being the only girl in the class, I got a lot of attention … mainly from Ryan. We dated for a few months, but thought we were better as friends. We remained close friends throughout high school and college, always there for each other, whether with a problem or just for support and encouragement.

I started my own photography studio in the summer of 2004. Ryan was there to support me in my adventure {unforgettable photography by anna}. Our friendship soon blossomed into a serious relationship. On a Monday evening in September 2007, Ryan came home from guitar lessons, woke me up from a nap and asked me to take our dog out. To my great surprise, an engagement ring was attached to the leash!

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

Since my work schedule was booked solid for the following year, we planned for a May 2009 wedding! So many people thought we were crazy for waiting over a year and a half …

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

In December of the same year, we found out we were expecting!!!

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

On August 4, 2008, I gave birth to our daughter, Madeline. Good thing we planned for a long engagement!!! Crazy how that worked out… Ryan walked Madeline down the aisle the day of our wedding.

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

For us, we know that we not only have a partner for life, but a best friend.  I think deep down, even when we were not an “item”, we always saw ourselves together forever!

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

What a terrific story!

* * *

I totally intended to talk about the different styles of photography through the years … vintage effects in particular. I even started researching the subject to be able to speak to the topic more intellectually. Then, I simply became mesmerized by Anna’s story … and the Woods’ images, in all their glorious beauty, and decided to let the photos speak for themselves. No matter the style, Jeffrey and Julia are quite literally the experts of the experts!

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

Thanks to Jeffrey and Julia Woods, this lovely family can now remember their wedding day forever and ever … amen!

Photography by Jeffrey & Julia Woods

A few more details from the day … their wedding took place at Hidden Lake Winery in Illinois … just east of St. Louis in rural Aviston. Wedding vendors included Ahner Florist, Weck Events & Weddings, Switzer Film, and Bella Vita Salon.

After looking at Anna, Ryan and Madeline’s wedding day, you should have no doubt. Jeffrey and Julia Woods are … well … just amazing artists!

Real Chicago Wedding at the Shedd Aquarium: Carrie & Jamie

Last week, Little Black Book photographer, Doug McGoldrick let us know about his recession-friendly photography deal! And so, like all good editors would do … I had to go take a look at his website and his blog. I happened upon Carrie & Jamie’s wedding at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and thought … wow! You guys have to see this!

Photography by doug McGoldrick

What a fantastic place for a wedding!!

I love this look on Carrie’s face …

What a fabulous backdrop!

These mini-maids and man … too cute for words.

Photography by Doug McGoldrick

Straight from Doug’s blog

So I’ve shot weddings in lots of cool spaces, but last weekend I shot a wedding at the Shedd Aquarium for the first time, wow, now that’s a cool space. Sure I’ve been to the Shedd a million times. I’m even a member. But to walk into the lobby of the Shedd set up for a wedding is a very different experience. When I go the Shedd, I’m wrangling the kids and navigating a line so I really never got an intense view of the lobby. With everything pulled out though– it’s an amazing space. Then to have your dinner table next to the reef tank, how cool is that. Carrie and Jamie sure knew what they were doing when they picked this venue for their wedding. Carrie’s brother performed a beautiful ceremony, after which we all went down to the shark area for cocktails before dinner by the reef and then dancing in the lobby. The band Incognito played great stuff and kept the floor moving all night. I hope I get to go back there next season for another great wedding by the fishes. Special thanks to Dan Chen and Mark Doddato for helping me out.

So what do you think? Pretty cool, isn’t it?

Doug McGoldrick is based in Chicago but will travel anywhere you’d like to take him!

His philosophy: Stay out of the way and catch the memories as the day unfolds…

Thanks for sharing this with us, Doug!

Real Wedding: Kathleen & Tyson – February Red, IV

Today’s featured Little Black Book members are Jeffery and Julia Woods. The wedding photos of Kathleen and Tyson are simply magnificent!

If you’re just joining us, here’s part I, part II and part III. Sooooo many beautiful images!

Photography by Jeff & Julia Woods

Kathleen has joined us to tell us a little bit more about her February wedding celebration at the Peoria Country Club …

My Mom and I were so intimately involved in every detail which made it even more special when we were able to see the finished product of the weekend’s events. We had amazing help from very talented people and it was truly the staff and those behind the scenes that made it so extraordinary. My sisters and step-mom were also huge when it came to unique elements to integrate into the day.

Photography by Jeff & Julia Woods

We did a stand up cocktail buffet which began at 7:00. Food stations and themes were scattered around in about 3 different rooms with various musical pieces in each room. Everyone moved downstairs at 8:45 for the toasts and dancing. The band was so tremendously phenomenal (The Larry Eckerling Orchestra) and the floor was literally packed nonstop until 1:30 am. After the toasts they passed around grasshoppers in shot glasses as well as chocolate milkshakes. The ice bar was a huge hit with guests and added an element of uniqueness. Around 11:30 they opened a mac’ n cheese bar for a late snack which consisted of several different cheeses and a variety of toppings. It was a truly memorable and special night which is what I hope every bride experiences!

Photography by Jeff & Julia Woods

Kathleen and Tyson’s talented team of wedding vendors include: The Wedding Cake Connection, Save The Date-Peoria, Ultimate Bride, Bronze Frog (Invitations), Five Senses Spa, Enchanted Florist, Sound & Light Creations

Photography by Jeff & Julia Woods

Kathleen’s gorgeous gown was designed by Kenneth Pool. Bridesmaids wore Badgley Mischka.

A HUGE thanks to Jeffrey and Julia Woods for sharing this totally exquisite wedding with us today. You guys are simply awesome! We’re looking forward to having you as guest bloggers when you get back from Brazil! Safe travels!!

And to Kathleen and Tyson … our very heartfelt Congratulations from all of us at Style Me Pretty! Thanks for sharing your joy!

Real Wedding: Kathleen & Tyson – February Red, III

Kathleen and Tyson’s wedding images, sent to us by two of our favorite Little Black Book photographers,  Jeffrey and Julia Woods, elicit such a sense of tranquility deep inside … it’s obvious from beginning to end that the Woods have an innate instinct for capturing not just the obvious beauty surrounding a wedding, but the most subtle nuances that completely define the essence of the day as well.

Photography by Jeff & Julia Woods

From the lovely bride, Kathleen …

Tyson and I met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Chicago. I went to the University of Wisconsin- Madison and Tyson went to the University of Illinois as did a lot of my high school friends, so we know a lot of the same people. The bizarre part was that one of our friends, Brittney, introduced Tyson to me as my “future husband” and then introduced me to Tyson as his “future wife”. It was awkward but funny and obviously, we had no idea that would actually happen!

Photography by Jeff & Julia Woods

Red was the chosen color for our wedding. We chose February because that is the month we met and we didn’t want a super lengthy engagement. We really wanted a completely romantic feel so we went with red and black. The red theme was carried throughout the 9 month engagement which was really fun. The engagement party had a red Asian theme and the showers and rehearsal dinner also went with the red idea. I thought it was fun to wear red in some way for all of the events too. There was no shortage of red…flowers, purses, bridesmaid dresses (in which all of the girls were stunning), red lighting, red drinks, red cake, red draping, red candles…even the Country Club staff wore red tuxedo shirts. It was just a blast to have fun with the color!

More of the story to come!

In the meantime, we really wish you would look back at another of Jeff and Julia Woods’ weddings featured on The Little Black Book Blog …

Ashley and Andrew also celebrated their wedding at The Peoria Country Club. This wedding feature was one of our more popular weddings on the LBBB. {Click Here} to see Ashley & Andrew’s wedding.

Real Wedding: Anna and Nicholas, V

A HUGE thank you to Artisan Events for sending us such a charming, totally original affair. It’s completely refreshing to see a wedding that doesn’t take itself too seriously, that is built out of love, celebration and great company. And of course, to Anna and Nicholas, for sharing their lovely day with us!

real wedding artisan events

Remember, when you are planning your own affair…look to places that are a bit off the beaten path. Restaurants, galleries, old warehouses, gardens, wineries, bars, universities, private homes…all great places to start!

Real Wedding: Anna and Nicholas, IV

So, if you are just now getting your daily dose of SMP, we started the day with this super chic Canadian affair. Click here, here and here to see the rest of the posts. And now, we are devouring a gorgeous wedding sent to us by the oh so talented, Little Black Book photographers Artisan Events, out of Chicago.

Just another example of perfect little details…the family photos strung along a clothes line bring an intimacy and a sense of whimsy to the day. Plus, it becomes a talking point for guests and something to reminisce over with your family. Love.

Real Wedding: Anna and Nicholas, III

I don’t have a ton of details on this gorgeous wedding, but I just had to share it with you guys anyway. For me, it’s the juxtaposition of the bare, industrial space with the chic black bridesmaids dresses and pretty pink flowers that really makes the look work. It’s feminine and masculine, broken down and unbelievably elegant.

artisan events

Artisan Events is the hugely talented photography studio behind these gorgeous images.

LOVING the chandeliers, adding a bit of glitz to the otherwise blank space. It’s gorgeous and the perfect site for a simple, but sophisticated affair. I am so impressed that this couple really looked out of the box to find their wedding venue. Proof that there are always hidden gems in every city.

More on the way!

Real Wedding: Anna and Nicholas, II

This featured wedding is all about the venue. I died when I saw how ridiculously cool this space was, perfect for a casual but ultra chic couple. Infused with perfect little details and some gorgeous flowers, it’s perfection.I am so loving Artisan Events, the photographers behind the affair, for sending it to us!

artisan events

We have so much more from this lovely affair on the way!

Real Wedding: Anna and Nicholas

If today’s earlier featured wedding captured my mantra “It’s All in the Details” to perfection, this next one is the epitome of my second favorite tip…find a really cool venue and the rest will fall into place! Nicholas and Anna’s wedding took place this past August at Salvage One, an architectural artifacts warehouse in Chicago. It was shot by one of my all time favorite photography studios, Artisan Events.

Before I show you the ridiculous venue, here are a few shots of the stunning bride…

I am in love. Wait until you see the rest of this charming affair…it just keeps getting better and better!

Wedding Style: Classic Tradition, Elegance and Love

Sometimes, words fail. That is when the memories take over.

A classically beautiful wedding from Jeffrey and Julia Woods

Jeffrey Julia Woods Fine Art Wedding Photography

Jeffrey and Julia Woods are to weddings … what love is to marriage. A team. A fusion of style, emotion and tradition … with hearts full of passion.

jeffrey and julia woods pre wedding prayers

After looking and looking and looking at the images from this wedding, I honestly felt as if I knew Ashley and Andrew’s family. I felt as if I had seen every kiss, felt every hug and shed every tear of the day! I am a total sucker when it comes to grooms’ expressions. Usually it’s when the bride is walking toward him. I am a die-hard advocate of getting that one essential shot. This time, though, it was the photo of Ashley’s Dad & Andrew’s handshake. I can almost hear the impassioned  “I promise … I will ……”

Jeffrey Julia Woods Ashley Andrew Catholic Wedding Ceremony

Ashley and Andrew exchanged vows on the 5th of July at the Cathedral of St. Mary of Immaculate Conception in Peoria, Illinois.  A wedding day filled with love and laughter with a tiny bit of nervousness … as all wedding days should be. An elegant dinner reception followed at the Peoria Country Club.

Jeffrey Julia Woods Ashley Andrew Wedding Cake

The exquisite cake was provided by Barb Evans, an independent cake creator and owner of the Wedding Cake Connection.

from Ashley’s mom … “Their cake was based on a Martha Stewart design. We made some changes to the original decorating design to reflect Ashley and Andrew’s personality. Ashley’s 5 layer ivory fondant cake was customized by adding their monogram, a lace pattern that worked back to the French lace in her gown, a heart pattern reminiscent of her grandmother’s sentiment “you’re a part of my heart”, and a design that replaced small flowers with tiny grape clusters to represent Ashley and Andrew’s appreciation for fine wine. This was a beautifully serious cake with a sprinkle of personality and humor. The cake was staged on a grand piano covered in an ivory lamour table linen topped with a pearl embellished gold lace table runner. Professional lighting was used to highlight the cake’s display.”

Jeffrey Julia Woods Pre-Wedding Mother's Love

Again, from the bride’s mother …  Lieutenant Andrew Crawford is an Air Force F-16 fighter pilot. He injected his spirited personality and Air Force background in the form of the traditional fighter pilot tuxedo shirt. It is customary for some fighter pilots to remove the back and the sleeves of their tuxedo shirts and replace that fabric with a wild and crazy print. When the dress jacket is on,  what is seen is a white collar, shirt front, and cuffs. Once the jacket is removed, the sleeves and back POP with color and the party begins! Andrew selected a material reminiscent of the combination of a vintage aloha shirt print and a 1940’s pin up girl pattern. Betty Grable meets Waikiki! It was playful, colorful, and the perfect expression of Andrew’s  personality.

Jeffrey Julia Woods Bridal Party Fun

Ashley’s wedding color palette was based upon the rich raspberry hue of the bridesmaids’ gowns. (Just a quick sidenote – I had no idea there was a “p” in raspberry!)

Jeffrey Julia Woods Family Love Ashley Andrew

Do you see what I mean about Jeff and Julia’s photography? I feel like I was there!

Just as important to me (as a mom) is the groom’s expression when his bride walks toward him down the aisle … so is that shot of daddy’s little princess as they dance their dance.

Wedding Reception Ashley Andrew Jeffrey Julia Woods

I’m quite sure that the groom’s mom feels the same way about her dance with her charming little prince!

The Country Club of Peoria was transformed into a posh party venue, thanks to Beth Maxwell of  Save The Date and event coordination by Cloud Nine Weddings of Chicago.

When I choose a Real Wedding to be featured on SMP, it’s usually because of the details. Of course a lovely gown, an endearing groom, a beautiful bridal party, a perfect bride…all go into the making of a great wedding. It’s the details, though, that really set a wedding apart.

Today’s wedding, sent to us by the oh-so-talented team at Lifework Images is all about the details.

arturo and deebrit

I have to admit, I am feeling under the weather today, so my writing skills are, well…lacking. BUT, the good news is that this wedding completely speaks for itself. It is a lesson in color, a lesson in style. Bringing the most gorgeous hues together into a cohesive, stunning palette. So much more to come!

Pink Inspired Flowers

Today we are celebrating Pink Week with a flower extravaganza! I have to admit, as girly as it is…pink is my all time favorite color. And, a pink flower? Well, that is just perfection in my eyes. So, here are my picks for the most beautiful pink florals, from sleek and modern to feminine and a bit frilly.

pink wedding flowers

Top Row: flowers by Waterlily Pond and Hello Darling / Bottom Row: flowers by Waterlily Pond and Modern Day Design

Okay, these florals are the perfect examples of how to use pink in a totally sophisticated, fresh way. By bringing in varying hues of pink, blacks and golds you instantly add a shot of chic that even the men in your life will appreciate. I am obsessed with the pink and gold scheme in the top left photo and equally smitten with the pink and black palette in the bottom right photo. Love, love, love.

If you are in need of a little floral inspiration, check out the sites mentioned above…honestly, the best way for your florist to understand your many loves, is by printing out images of your favorite designs.
