Hot Cocoa Cupcakes Recipe

Tis the season for baking, baking and more baking (and perhaps eating, eating and more eating), and if you are looking for a recipe that is equal parts delicious and gorgeous, you’ve come to the right spot. These hot cocoa cupcakes whipped up by our very own Abby Larson couldn’t be more darling if they tried, and word on the street is they are pretty darn easy to make. A little shortcut of sorts to some serious sweetness.

We are all for easy yet elegant around these parts, and these cupcakes are the perfect example. Just because you don’t have time to spend an entire day baking, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the holiday goodness. We’ll never judge you for using the boxed variety over starting from scratch.

ABBY’S TIME-SAVING BAKING TIPS

[dotted]

Not everything has to be from scratch.

In a time crunch and need to use box ingredients? Maybe whip up the frosting from scratch. Or not. If it’s delicious, no one will judge.

Accessorize for more impact.

Bring your baking to another level with sweet little accessories. We are suckers for cupcake wrappers. They instantly make any cupcake scream festive.

Don’t forget the toppings.

Not only are they delicious, toppings like these marshmallows make any simple treat feel super special. Plus, who doesn’t love a little something extra on their sweets?

From Cards to Cake Wedding Inspiration

When you combine two of our favorite things – cards and cakes, to be specific – pretty things happen. And today we’re taking inspiration from our stationery friends at Minted and translating that to confectionery goodness from Knead To Make. From modern to rustic, to vintage to bold, they’ve got plenty of inspiration for every style and you can see it all in the slideshow below.

From Cathy Haebe, cake maker from Knead To Make… Whenever Minted approaches me about creating a series of cakes inspired by wedding invitations from their collection, I always jump at the chance. I am no stranger to the wedding industry and I know how difficult it is to stay on trend and to constantly be searching for inspiration.

With a company like Minted, trends and inspiration are never lacking after pursuing their site. They have an unbelievable assortment of beautiful, fresh new designs sourced from independent designers all over the world. An assortment that rarely leaves you wanting as there is something for everyone. I love that Minted sells so many designs that are non-traditional. Designs that are chic and engage you in a story. For these cakes, I wanted to chose the four designs that I thought would have the most interesting things to say.

Christmas at The Larsons

Every year, Christmas is a scramble. And this year was no different. Our lives seem to move in a million different directions and finding a day or a moment to embrace the beautiful holiday season is tough. But every year, we do. We put our phones and ipads (or leap pads) away, we crank up Vince Vance and the Valiants and we get to work, decorating a space that feels “us.” Well, us on Christmas Crack. So with T minus a few days until Christmas, here are a few easy breezy tips that you can do today!

One. Greenery

[dotted]

Garden stores are basically giving away greenery this week. But we’re cheaper than that. A few years back, we bought a pretty but very fake strand of garland and each year, I gussy it up with clippings from the few plants outside that are still thriving. I just tuck them in so that they feel organic and so that our garland feels a little more robust.

Two. Reign Your Fab in a little

[dotted]

I believe that a mantle should be beautiful and yet simple. I stuck with one basic color inspired completely by a spool of ribbon I found at HomeGoods. I added neutrals with greens, then draped the ribbon throughout leaving the spool as part of the decor. HomeGoods ribbon during the holiday season is something dreams are made of.

Three. Accessorize with Texture

[dotted]

Pillows. One of those things that are SUCH a breeze to update. Just pop out the standards and throw in some holiday inspired cutie pies. I love the red tones in these. They felt a little wood cabin-y and they instantly made me think of starting a fire and toasting marshmallows. So they were the big winner.

I also like to bring in texture wherever I can. Draped blankets on the back of the sofa, puddles of blankets in baskets scattered around the home. Wooden trays filled with grab and go gifts and that red velvet ribbon that I love. Details that just makes the space feel warm and inviting.

Four. Something for your guests

[dotted]

The one thing I do during the last few weeks of the holidays is to go all in on cupcakes. Sometimes I make them. Mostly I buy them, but I keep about a dozen chocolate cupcakes in my fridge for the rest of the month. Why? Well for one, chocolate feels SO indulgent. I want every playdate, every mom that stops by, every colleague that comes over to be able to have something indulgent that doesn’t feel so much like a gift (and the guilt of not having a reciprocal gift) but something sweet to enjoy with abandon. I offer them to mailmen, to babysitters, to anyone else that looks like their day would improve with a little bit of chocolate.

And speaking of your guests…I also put together little grab bag gifts for friends.  This year we had a tray of muslin bags filled with chocolate and tied with a velvet red ribbon. So easy, so yummy and such a smile made for all of the many people that come through our doors.

But more important than gifts and chococolates…are smiles. Make sure that your decor doesn’t take itself too seriously. We put our kids ornaments that they made when they were 2 alongside gorgeous gifted ornaments that weigh a million pounds and they each make the other look that much more lovely. For me and my little one, Thea, the deer above is our smile. She kisses him and hugs him and just thinks he is a part of our family! Slays me every time.

Five. Build up your “oh crap” gift arsenal

[dotted]

Don’t forget your Oh Crap Gifts Bank! There are ALWAYS people that I either forget to gift or I start to feel guilt that I’m not giving a gift. So this is how I handle. I decide on a kit. Could be anything – hot chocolate kits are good, s’mores kits are good, cooking kits with great gourmet pasta and homemade sauce…YUM. But this year, we’re doing Hot Chocolate Cupcake Kits. And we’re unveiling all of the cute little details next!

Classic Beverly Hills Ballroom Wedding

Oh my goodness, this wedding is stunning.  It’s classic, elegant and filled with sooo many luxurious details, it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite. (Read: I can’t.)  From the lush blooms crafted by Blossom Floral to the breathtaking ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel to the beautiful bride rockin’ one gorgeous Manuel Mota gown.  See it all captured by Michael Segal in THE VAULT.

From Moments By Wayne… Classic style and elegant touches were the plan for this beautiful garden wedding at The Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. The day started with a fun trolly ride through the streets of Beverly Hills so that the Bride and Groom could take pictures at various Beverly Hills Gardens with their bridal party and family. Once back at the hotel, the ceremony took place in the Whetherly Gardens complete with a chuppah designed to complement the surroundings and florals lining the aisle. The bride in her “Ventura” gown designed by Manuel Mota was the epitome of beauty and elegance as she strolled the aisle toward her groom. Details such as custom wedding programs, menus and escort cards were created using a crest designed by Sean (The Groom).

The evening was complete with abundant florals in all white and green adorning the tables in the ballroom to make for a festive setting.

#MistletoeMoments Inspiration from Dressed by Jess

With just a few days left before Santa comes to town, we can’t help but get in the festive spirit. And that’s where #MistletoeMoments comes in. You snap a moment with your special someone, include the hashtag, and you’ve officially got a chance to be featured on our Instagram feed. Need a little photo taking inspiration? Our Blogger Bride Dressed by Jess has you covered.

From JessThe holidays are jam-packed with family gatherings and cocktail parties. It’s one of the few times a year that we get to reconnect with loved ones, family, friends, and even neighbors. One of the best parts of being engaged in the month of December is sharing family holiday traditions. This is going to be the second year I will spend Christmas Eve with Rob’s family and I’m really looking forward to continuing this tradition. Did I mention his family is Italian and we eat well over five courses? I will most definitely be wearing stretchy pants for days to follow!

What’s even more special about this time of year is creating new traditions. Rob and I decided that each year we are going to add a new holiday tradition to our list. To get us started we took a trip to a local Christmas tree farm to pick-up wreaths, garland, and other fun decorations. We may have had a little bit too much fun roaming the market…and sneaking in a few kisses. We woke up super early to beat the weekend rush and listened to Christmas music on our trip down to the farm. You’d be surprised at how jolly caroling makes you feel even if you can’t sing. I’ll admit, my vocals are a bit out of tune!

The holidays seem to zip by each and every year. I always have good intentions to begin my shopping early and yet I always procrastinate. To make things more manageable I’ve been ordering gifts online so that I don’t need to spend hours at the mall on the weekends. This way I have more free time to cozy up inside and watch Christmas movies. Maybe I’ll even convince Rob to bake cookies with me (that might be a stretch). What new traditions will you start this year?

Wishing you very Happy Holidays! xx Jess

Sanctuary Gardens Ethereal Destination Elopement

This wedding is kinda my favorite. And when I say kinda, what I actually mean is I’m madly-can’t-stop-scrolling-in-love with it. For starters, the Bride’s barely blush gown is making me want to redo my own vows, but add in their sweeter than sweet portraits and I’m instantly hooked. It’s the type of pretty we’re please to share and thanks to Nadia Hung Photography we’ve got it all waiting in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…When we sat down and started to envision our wedding, we knew that we had to make it true to our personal style and taste. We wanted our day to reflect our: effortless, organic, and timeless nature. We picked Kelowna as our destination because we wanted to share this special place with our closest family and friends. The process of picking out our vendors was very natural and obvious, because they’ve all encompassed values and visions that we were looking for. We couldn’t have been happier with how magical our day turned out, and we still get compliments about our wedding day even up until today!

Traditional Royal Fox Country Club Fall Wedding

Let’s talk about this Bride’s dress. Blush, tulle, lace and beading—does it get any better than this? I think not, except for the gift to her Groom: Lord of the Rings cuff links and tie clip. From the personal touches and beautiful fall bouquets to the stunning Royal Fox Country Club setting and the Bride’s glowing makeup from Carly Pribich, this couple’s day was the perfect beginning to happily ever after. See all the pretty from Katherine Salvatori Photography in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…Our wedding day was literally a dream come true, and above and beyond anything I had envisioned or hoped for. It was so exciting to see all of the planning come together. It also made me feel so special when all of the little details and personal touches I spent a lot of time on, and to make our wedding unique were noticed and appreciated. I wanted our wedding to be very elegant, classy and timeless, but to look and feel like a fairy-tale. Fall is both of our favorite seasons because of the colors, weather, and overall cozy vibe. We owe a very huge thank you to our family, friends & vendor team! We are so overwhelmed with joy, gratitude, and love.

From the second we walked into Royal Fox Country Club, we knew it was our wedding venue. I loved how the venue had an “old world elegance” feel to it and had such a grand entrance. The building is actually modeled after Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello home. We also both loved the library and rich wood throughout the venue. The ceremony was held outside (it was beautiful weather – 50’s and sunny!) Jane Spair (the wedding coordinator there) was absolutely amazing every step of the way. She went above and beyond several times to make sure everything was perfect. We owe a huge thank you to her!

I knew I wanted my wedding dress to be unique from anything else I had seen. I chose a lace and tulle champagne ballgown that had beautiful beaded crystal detailing on the waist, as well as running down the train. The dress originally came with cap sleeves, but I knew I always wanted longer sleeves! Rosa (the seamstress at Wolsfelt’s) was able to make my vision come to life. She exactly matched the lace to the lace of the bodice and was able to hand sew custom sleeves for my dress. It definitely gave the dress the fairytale look that I had hoped for & felt so much more like “me”!

For floral design I had a specific vision of what I wanted, and a great florist who worked with me to make it happen. I knew for my bouquet I wanted very big, garden-like, a lot of texture, messy but not too busy, and burgundy mixed with greenery. My bridal bouquet was also very wide and I had wanted my bridesmaid’s bouquets to be a smaller more rounded version of my own. My florist introduced me to dahlias which became the focal point of my entire floral concept. I absolutely loved how the dark burgundy dahlias popped against all of the different types of greenery, and made such an impact both in person and in photo. For both the arch and head table, we had a floral greenery garland that coordinated with the bouquets. For the guest tables, we wanted a simple scattering to play off the beautiful oil lamps from the venue, and create visual interest at the bases.

My husband is a huge Lord of The Rings fan and a few years ago he made me one! We both knew we wanted LOTR to be a part of our wedding day – especially with the beautiful library – so we had our ring shots with my husband’s leather-bound LOTR book. Little did my husband know that my gift to him was a custom made set of Lord of The Rings cuff links and tie clip!

Choosing Katherine Salvatori Photography was one of the very best investments for our wedding that we made! There is no one else I would have rather to have captured our special day. We are so thankful we have these beautiful photographs to cherish throughout the years.

What advice would I give to brides-to-be? Make your wedding feel personal. Incorporate & highlight your interests as a couple. It’s ok to care a lot about your details and want things to look a certain way! Looking back at the day & my photos, I am so happy that I was particular about “all of those little details” because they made the day feel even more special for us! It’s also important to hire the right vendors & people who can not only help bring your visions to life, but really do add to your special day! My vendor team was amazing & I am so thankful for them! Also as a Professional Makeup Artist for brides & weddings (I’m honored to be a Style Me Pretty Little Black Book Member!) I suggest giving yourself & your wedding party plenty of extra time to get ready in the morning! You’ll be able to be relax, not feel rushed, and should enjoy being pampered!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who played a part in our wedding day!

From The Groom…The only word I can think of to describe our wedding is Perfect. Everything went exactly the way we envisioned, and in many cases exceeded our expectations. I still can’t imagine a better day! It started with all the guys meeting at the hotel to get ready; it was nice to hang out and relax before pictures. I think they were all a little jealous of the awesome LOTR cuff links and tie clip Carly got me! I was happily surprised when I saw those, but that’s nothing compared to how I felt when I saw her for the first look. I was literally at a loss for words when I turned around, she was absolutely breathtaking! And from there it just got better. From the pictures at Cantigny to the wonderful ceremony to the dinner and dancing, everything just made our night more special and memorable. Our DJ was incredible; the dance floor was rocking all night and stayed packed until the very end of the night (people didn’t want to stop!). I can’t believe how many compliments we got about the venue as well. Our guests were in awe at the beauty of Royal Fox, and so many people told us the food was the best they’ve ever had at a wedding (and we agree!). We continue to hear from friends and family about how great the ceremony was, how much fun everyone had at the reception, and how outstanding the pictures are. And we can’t wait to see the video too, we know it will be beyond our expectations too! People say that your wedding day goes by fast, that you need to make a little time for yourselves during the crazy, hectic day. Truth be told, we didn’t want the day to end. We were able to spend the entire day together, surrounded and supported by our loved ones, and I would not have changed a thing. It was perfect.

From Katherine Salvatori PhotographyCarly and Jon’s wedding day was magical from start to finish! From the moment I met Carly, we just clicked and I looked forward to her wedding for over a year! Carly’s attention to detail was superb, and from the Lord of the Rings cuff links to the lace detail on her dress, everything fit together perfectly and was so unique. I am in love with the deep green bridesmaid dresses, and the gorgeous bouquets and florals tied everything together. One of my favorite details was the adorable street sign their venue made with their names on it. Carly and Jon totally adore each other, which made my job as a photographer incredibly easy. Their day was perfect from start to finish, and we are so happy we were a part of it!

From The Bride…Andy and I met when we were both working for the charity Age UK. We were both part of the charity softball team and met at the first practice of the season. After a couple months of knowing each other Andy moved to Brixton where I was also living at the time and the rest, as they say, is history.

Andy proposed in India when we were on a two week trip last year. Apparently he thought proposing at sunset on a beach in Goa was too cliché, so instead decided to propose in Munnar in our hotel room, as the mist descended and monsoon rains appeared! He didn’t have the ring with him (travel insurance woes) so a temporary ring had to suffice. He even went to the effort to film a congratulations video from my family and friends to show me after the proposal. However, we had some technical difficulties and the hotel’s wifi was really weak so we had to hop in a rickshaw to the town nearby where I say in an internet café with Indian music blaring, headphones on, listening to my nearest and dearest wishing us all the best. And I wouldn’t have had the proposal any other way.

My dress was the second one I tried on. My maid of honor was living in Crystal Palace at the time and had occasionally walked past a bridal shop (Love Bridal) so we gave that a go. They are absolutely lovely, there’s no pressured whatsoever and they really listen to what you want. I didn’t have much thought about what I wanted my dress to look like so Julie (MOH) and I decided the first three I was going to try on by the names of the dresses. Julie has close links with Australia and one of the dresses was called ‘Kylie’ so it made the top three. It turned out to be the one.

I wanted something simple yet stylish that suited my frame. I loved the back of my dress, for us girls that don’t have a size able chest it’s nice being able to make a statement at the back! I wasn’t going to have a veil but it made me feel so ‘bride like’ it was a must.

Jewelry was kept to a minimum because of the style of the dress but I had a ring that was my great grandmother’s (something old) a bracelet from Andy’s mum (something borrowed) and Andy surprised me with pearl earrings from Tiffany and Co for my wedding gift!

We knew from the start that we wanted a London wedding. We both live in London and love it, so couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. We struggled at first to find somewhere that really suited what we wanted. At first we were looking for an all in one but everything we found was a bit too formal.

The Oyster Shed where we had our reception is just amazing. The location is ideal – right on the river with a brilliant view of the Shard. It’s normally closed on a weekend because it’s in the city so there aren’t a lot of people about at the weekends so they only open for private hire. It’s very London but with a nautical twist!

The great thing about the Oyster Shed is that it already has so much character. There’s lots of different colours and knick knacks that we didn’t really need to add much else as it would take away from the charm of the venue. What we loved as well were the rustic tables with mismatched chairs – we’re not formal people so the set-up really suited us. In the end we added a little bit of bunting, some photos of our grandparents on their wedding days (as they have all sadly passed away) and that was really it! I did have to have my US mailbox for our cards as a nod to my US heritage.

Ultimately, we wanted a relaxed day and the Oyster Shed really helps with that. Everything is in one room, but with enough space for people to spread out – people could be dancing the night away or relaxing on one of the leather sofas while all the while having a truly spectacular London backdrop behind them.

A Romantic Costal Engagement

Sure we might be entering the throws of winter, but this pretty little e-sesh from Still55 Photography is here to remind us that an eternal summer lives within us all. Scroll through and soak up a little sunshine as we partake in Naiz and Brett’s oceanside engagement complete with a summer sail. It’s a sun-kissed day that we’re excited to share and you can see it all in THE VAULT!

From Still55 PhotographyNaiz and Brett are two extremely warm hearted people. She wanted her engagement to reflect the warm whimsical feelings she gets when around Brett. “I want it to be a romantic blend of timeless locations coupled with fun and authentic expressions from us.” Brett’s Uncle kindly welcomed us aboard his sailboat to add to our coastal inspired aesthetic. Immediately it added the candid element of surprise as we were bracing for waves and jockeying for position. Needless to say these images capture all of our brides desires and more! The warm sunlit start on shore followed by the timeless and romantic adventure of setting sail along remote stretches of historical places such as cumberland island made for a very amazing day!

Elegant Southern Wedding Inspiration

This elegant inspo from Abby Capalbo is speaking directly to our wedding loving hearts. Because when one of our very own steps out from behind the computer screen and onto the wedding scene, well we kinda lose our minds (in the best way possible). Joined with Jacin Fitzgerald Events and the lens of Elisa Bricker this powerhouse pretty is not to be missed. See it all in THE VAULT!

From Abby CapalboPerfect parts southern charm and southern elegance, we loved dreaming up this inspiration shoot at the lovely Clifton Inn in Charlottesville, Virginia for the Elisa Bricker Workshops. We started with a classic and sophisticated boudoir session in a stunning private estate (thanks to Stay Charlottesville), and then moved over to the Inn just in time for the light to work its magic. With a Carol Hannah gown that couldn’t be more stunning and a dapper Groom dressed head to toe in The Black Tux, the couple was just about as gorgeous as they come. Sprinkle in Jacin Fitzgerald’s ridiculously good florals and breathtaking design and Elisa Bricker amazing eye behind the lens, and the images turned out more beautiful than we could have ever imagined.

Classic Summer Waterfront Wedding

When you live in the Northeast you know that any outdoor celebration comes with a risk. You see, we don’t exactly have California-type weather around these parts, but I must say, when it’s good, it’s really good. And these two lucked out for their summer wedding, with the sun shining and big smiles all over. Ryon:Lockhart Photography captured every bit – see all the bright beauty in our VAULT right this way!

From the Bride… Brian and I met as lifeguards – the best summer job ever – especially when you meet the man you are going to marry 10 years later! I knew there was something special about him right away and after a few sunburns and some games of “all fishies under” we hit it off.

Brian proposed at one of our favorite spots – the docks where we’d had many ice cream dates, long chats and even shared our first kiss. We celebrated that night with both of our families and some champagne (a bottle that Brian’s dad had sitting in his fridge for… awhile), and then the wedding planning began! Since we are both teachers, we knew right away that we wanted a July wedding. We looked at tons of wedding venues, but we fell in love with Seawanhaka Corrinthian Yacht Club with its beautiful water views, great lawn and simple charm! After lots of deliberation about having an outdoor wedding, and lots of prayers for sunshine, we could not be happier that we took that leap of faith! We looked at plenty of bands, photographers, florists … and the dress – I probably tried on 75 before choosing the one! Needless to say, I am not a quick decision maker – but when it came to marrying Brian the decision was easy! Being engaged was such an exciting time, there was so much celebrating, planning, and looking forward to the big day and the future together. It was easy to get wrapped up in all the details of the day, but we were a constant reminder to each other that the wedding is one day, the marriage is a lifetime.

And that one day happened to be an amazing one! We said our vows in the same church where both of our parents were married and at the party we danced the night away! We had a wonderful wedding day and night and we are forever grateful to all of the people who made the day possible! We are so thankful to our families, friends and especially our parents, for their touching kindness, support and love. It is a beautiful thing to marry the love of your life surrounded by all that love! Our wedding day was an amazing start to our lifelong journey as husband and wife :)

Intimate + Cozy Holiday Outdoor Dinner Party Editorial

I don’t know about you, but I would L-O-V-E to be a guest at this merry feast in the Mississippi woods. With a gauzy scarf-topped picnic table, foraged winter greenery, roasted marshmallows and a very sweet black lab named Pepper, this cozy outdoor dinner party from Mitchell Willis Events and Lauren Kinsey is precisely what holiday dreams are made of. See all the merry making in THE VAULT!

From Mitchell Willis Events… When we conceived the idea for this shoot, our inspiration was a Kinfolk-style relaxed dinner between good friends (and dogs!), with delicious holiday food, laughter, and marshmallow roasting. We also wanted to show that creating a beautiful holiday gathering doesn’t have to be extremely costly. So, we set out to create a table runner completely out of foraged winter greenery, which was all from the woods around my grandparents’ house in south Mississippi. We used an outdoor table and benches that we already had and covered it with gauzy fabric and lightweight scarves to give a layered appearance (which is another thing readers can do at home without buying an expensive tablecloth!). We also froze cranberries in ice cubes to give a pop of holiday color into everyone’s drinks. We ate delicious butternut squash soup (while Pepper the dog tried her hardest to steal food off the table) and then roasted marshmallows over a fire pit. It was a styled shoot, but we really did laugh and have a great time, and our wish is that people will see that creating a beautiful, fun, comfy party environment is within their reach.

Traditional + Elegant Malibu Rocky Oaks Vineyard Wedding

Thanks to the lens of Michael Segal Photography, we’re about to whisk you away to the rocky shores of Malibu to witness one very special day. Cue the perfectly planned wedding of Sarah and Phil. For their special day proves to not only be crazy elegant, but seriously sentimental too. ByDesign Films captured every happy tear below and we invite you to watch it all unfold in THE VAULT!

From The Bride and Groom…Sarah and Phil first met three years ago while watching mutual friends in a band play at a local venue over a few cocktails. He got her number, and actually called instead of texting. She then knew he wasn’t like most other guys, he was a gentleman. A couple years later, Philip proposed to Sarah on the iconic Santa Monica Pier, which is the city where they first met and lived together.

It was a tough decision for them on where to get married, Philip being from Northern California, and Sarah from Ohio. But they decided to get married in Santa Monica, so they could show all of their family and friends the life they were creating together in Southern California. Neither of them had ever thought about what their wedding day would look like. At first thought, wedding planning would be easy for them as they are both fairly simple and easy-going people and ultimately just wanted to celebrate with family and friends. But as the venue search started, they both learned they were a lot more particular than they thought, as they started to build their “dream wedding” together.

They had the ceremony at St Monica’s Catholic Church, which is where the bride and groom are members. It was important for them that they get married in the church and there was no better place than St. Monica, as it has such a welcoming atmosphere, amazing cantors and musicians, and is breathtakingly beautiful.

The moment the doors opened, the bride was just a silhouette, as the light flowed into the church behind her, and she slowly walked down the aisle with her father Frank by her side and Jacobs song reverberating off the arching church ceilings. The bride was absolutely stunning, and the groom said that it felt like someone snuck up and punched him directly in the stomach taking his breath away. They exchanged vows as Philip put his grandmother’s ring on Sarah’s finger.

After the ceremony, they transported their guests from Santa Monica into the gorgeous mountains of Malibu via the Pacific Coast Highway. With a nice ocean view, they popped mini bottles of Korbel champagne, and started celebrating on the way to the venue. As the guests arrived, the gates opened and they continued up the scenic windy road to approach Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards.

Malibu Rocky Oaks is a privately owned Tuscan inspired villa, sitting atop the highest point around, surrounded by gorgeous vineyards and a view of the ocean off in the distance. Besides the amazing view, they wanted to avoid the banquet hall patterned carpets and drapes, and Malibu Rocky Oaks was exactly that. They searched all of LA and couldn’t find a place that had more of an amazing view.

When it came to the catering they both are admitted foodies, especially living in LA, so they wanted the food to be incredible. They wanted the freedom to choose their own chef and meal, as they are not particularly fond of “wedding food”. So this venue allowed them to create exactly the type of celebration they wanted, rather than having just a cookie cutter wedding. It was definitely a lot more work for them, and their coordinator, but at the end of the day, they made it exactly what they wanted.

Cocktails and appetizers were served on the side balcony with a seamless view across all of Malibu, while a contemporary violinist played in the background. An old farm dinner bell was rung and everyone took their seat along two long rustic wooden tables and a “farm to table” family-style dinner was served.

At the tail end of dinner the bride and groom quickly snuck away to capture a few extra photos during the golden hour. They are somewhat an adventurous couple so they climbed up a cliff just to get a killer shot. They stood up there looking like they were on top of the world. The first dance, by request of the groom, was to have the first dance on the helipad during sunset which had never been done before, and so they added an additional dance floor. They prepared for several weeks searching for the right song and learned their special choreographed dance.

As the sun started to set behind the hills of Malibu and into the ocean, they walked out onto the dance floor hand in hand as their their shadows reflected onto the wooden dance floor. Once the music started, she circled him caressing his shoulders then spinning out and pulling her back in, then they began the elegant movements of the foxtrot, gliding around the dance floor to Temper Trap’s powerful song Sweet Disposition.

After the father-and-bride and mother-and-groom dance, their guests then joined them out on the helipad and rocked out to few songs to initiate the party as the night began. All of this was perfectly created by their wedding coordinator Letizia Silvestri, and perfectly captured by Michael Segal.
