Homemade Coconut, Fig, Apricot, Raspberry, & Cranberry Granola

I’ve been on a mission for an amazing homemade granola recipe for what seems like FOREVER, and I should have known my girl Waiting on Martha would have my answer. Her recipe seems downright perfect, and you can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be testing this recipe out myself over the weekend.

From Waiting on MarthaAs someone who doesn’t eat breakfast often, I’ve gotta say I do love me some granola. Of course a good granola doesn’t need to be limited to breakfast time; anytime it’s around I’ve been known to nibble at it all day. I’ve played around with my homemade granola recipe for years, and Loves, I’ve finally nailed it.

The key, I think, is the raspberry jam. It serves almost as the “glue”, if you will, in the granola. As you may have learned through your own homemade granola trials, most recipes turn out to be just a big pan of crumbles. This homemade granola recipe keeps together better, producing big chunks to enjoy.

Along with the raspberry jam, I mix in a generous pouring of coconut flakes, along with dried fig, apricot and cranberries…and the result is simply scrumptious. When baking, I take the “low and slow” approach; sticking my handy Staub in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes at 325 degrees. This helps the granola bake evenly (you definitely want to avoid browning the top too much). When it’s done, I of course sneak a helping or two while it’s warm, with a drizzle of sweet, raw honey to top it all off. And the granola that lasts until the next day (if any) is perfect atop a little greek yogurt. Delish! Truly, MKR

Homemade Coconut, Fig, Apricot, Raspberry, & Cranberry Granola

  • 2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup shredded coconut, loosely packed
  • 2/3 cup raspberry jam
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried figs
  • 1/2 cup chopped dried apricots
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees
  2. Coat an 8 by 12-inch baking dish and line it with parchment paper
  3. In a large mixing bowl toss the dry ingredients; oatmeal, almonds, pecans, salt, coconut, figs, apricots, and cranberries then set aside.
  4. In a medium saucepan place the butter, honey, brown sugar, vanilla, and raspberry jam and bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir for one minute, then remove from heat and pour the dry mixture and stir well.
  5. Pour the mixture evenly into the parchment coated pan even pressing lightly down with your spatula.
  6. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until golden brown. Cool for at least 2 to 3 hours before cutting and serve room temperature.

A really beautiful flush mount can be hard to find. But Emily A. Clark knows a thing or two about sourcing the prettiest pieces and she has rounded up the ultimate flush mount lighting picks. We promise these beauties are so far from gag-worthy; in fact, they’re downright chic. So say peace out to the dreaded boob light and helllloo to these statement fixtures.

From Emily… You know I’m all about searching thrift stores for light fixtures when possible. But, let’s face it, there are very few good, secondhand flush mounts to be found—unless you’re looking for boob lights.

Side note: I don’t usually make blanket statements about any decorating piece for fear I’ll likely offend some (or lots of) people. But….I can say with confidence that “boob lights” don’t do rooms any favors. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just Google image it. Oh, and also never say “boob light” in front of a fifth grade boy. I learned that lesson the hard way.)

Anastasia wore a gorgeous scarlet gown that looked amazing blowing in the wind and Jovani looked straight out of a Bond movie – all that was missing was the martini. As the sun set behind the skyline, a dusty glow glimmered around them, making the moments feel cinematic. We’re still amazed at how it feels like they’re the only two people in the world when you look at these photographs, but the roof was nearly packed!

From Mum’s FlowersWe worked closely with Goldfinch Events & Design  on this modern styled shoot last spring. The overall theme of the shoot was a Kate Spade inspired color pop with bright citrus florals set against black and white stripes. For the bouquet we chose a punchy mix of our favorite spring blooms such as coral charm peonies with their variegated coral to peach petals and bright yellow centers. To add texture we pulled in berries and hellebore with a touch of maiden hair fern to soften.

When designing our bridal bouquets, we often ask to see a photo of the bride’s gown so that we can better determine the overall shape and size of the bouquet. In this case, the model was wearing a gorgeous Alvina Valenta ballgown with a very large and flowy skirt. So although the model was quite petite, we were able to make a larger, fuller bouquet with asymmetric movement and trailing greens to follow the lines of the dress. And we finished it all off with fluttering ribbons to match in crisp black and shades of pink.

Nutella Meringues

I love every single little thing the lovely Jacquelyn Clark of Lark & Linen whips up, but these nutella meringues are kind of next level. I mean, in my mind, nutella = happiness. Am I right? She recommends sharing them with guests, but I think if I made this delicious treats, I would probably keep them all for myself. Can you really blame me?

From Lark & LinenJustin and I love to entertain, but with schedules that seems to get more jam-packed by the minute, I find that we’re constantly on the hunt for quick and easy recipes that look significantly more involved than they are. Enter: this recipe for chocolate meringues (with nutella whipped cream!). They’re light as air, oddly beautiful in an imperfect-kind-of-way, and ridiculously delicious. Top with fresh berries, slivered almonds, chocolate shavings, or a combination of all the above, they make for the perfect thing to serve guests after a heavy meal.

Nutella MeringuesA no fuss, super simple, beyond delicious dessert

Serves 6Ingredients
  • 3 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup superfine sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. real vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp. white wine vinegar
  • 4 oz. dark chocolate, melted
  • 3/4 cup whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp nutella
Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 250°F. In the stand of your mixer, whisk the egg whites until frothy. Once frothy, slowly add in the sugar, vanilla and white wine vinegar.
  2. Mix on high until stiff peaks form and hold their shape. Drizzle the melted chocolate on top and gently fold the mixture (be careful not to mix or overfold!)
  3. Spoon heaping spoonfuls onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Drizzle with remaining chocolate and place in oven, on the lowest rack.
  4. Turn your oven down to 210°F and bake for 60-80 minutes. The meringues are ready when they easily lift from the parchment paper. At that point, turn off your oven and let meringues sit for another 10-20 minutes. Then, cool completely on wire racks.
  5. In the meantime, whip together the nutella and whipping cream until soft peaks form.
  6. To assemble, place a meringue on a plate, top with nutellla whipped cream, slivered almond, berries, and/or chocolate shavings.

Glamorous Beachside Engagement Session in Malibu

We want to know, what’s your idea of the perfect engagement session? Well, ours happens to look a lot like this Malibu lovely from Betsi Ewing Studio. With assistance from OH STELLA STUDIO, Kelsey and Adam shared kisses amongst a picturesque backdrop and if that doesn’t say romance then what does? It’s one session that has got us dreaming in summer and you can get in on it via The Vault!

From Betsi Ewing StudioKelsey and Adam had both been living in LA since 2010/2011, but lived in different neighborhoods in the big, spread out city. Kelsey is an event planner and designer and Adam is a counselor for veterans, so it wasn’t likely for their paths to cross.

One day in mid-October 2014, after previous attempts with on-line dating months and years prior, Kelsey decided to try one last time when she stumbled upon Adam. She reached out to him, which was so out of character for her but she thought he looked like a good person – he had a dog and was from North Carolina, a state where half of Kelsey’s family resides. Adam responded the next day, although he later disclosed that he almost didn’t respond to Kelsey because he was “over” on-line dating and saw that Kelsey was a former dancer and he coincidentally had his fair share of dating dancers.

They spent the entire day chatting and texting and decided that evening to meet for dinner at a pizza place near Kelsey’s neighborhood. It’s easy to say it was love at first sight and oftentimes, they tell people “we fell in love over pizza.” The connection they had was unlike anything either had experienced before. They enjoyed each other’s company which included lots of laughs and good conversation and they realized how alike they were – both came from great families, had a dog which was their world, had backgrounds in something creative (dance for Kelsey, acting for Adam), loved sports, being active, and also shared an extreme love for pizza, to name a few upon first meeting.

After that date, they became inseparable. They hung out every night and 2 weeks later, officially became boyfriend and girlfriend. 3 weeks later, at a concert at The Greek, Adam told Kelsey “I love you” for the first time. They were each other’s missing puzzle piece. They never questioned the fast track relationship timeline that they were on because the saying “when you know, you know” FINALLY made sense to them.

By Thanksgiving, Adam had joined Kelsey & her family in Northern California and in December, Kelsey flew to New York City during Christmas time to meet Adam’s family for the first time. Both meetings of families went really well.

With Kelsey’s job in events, she often works long, tedious hours as well as through many holidays, so the inseparable couple did not get to spend New Years Eve 2015 together as Kelsey was producing an event in the Bahamas. However, after Christmas time in NYC, Adam and his family went back to spend time in their home in Charlotte, North Carolina. During this visit back home, he bought the ring. However, he didn’t propose for awhile.

Months went by of dating and by the end of April, Kelsey moved in with Adam to a home in Brentwood. With a planned trip to Italy in September, Kelsey had somewhat expected Adam to propose then and Adam knew Kelsey was expecting this, so in typical Adam fashion, he wanted to surprise her. In early May, Kelsey had a big event in New York City that she had to be there for. It fell on Adam’s birthday, but so did a wedding in DC of one of Adam’s college friends, so he fortunately was able to visit Kelsey in NYC for 2 days prior to heading to DC for the wedding – an event Kelsey unfortunately couldn’t attend due to work schedules.

On May 7, after many conversations about “the plan” with his mother, Kelsey’s co-workers, and friends, Adam had devised a plan with Kelsey’s co-worker, Karrie, to hop on a horse-drawn carriage after work with her. As Karrie & Kelsey were riding through Central Park, Karrie hopped off at a stop light and handed Kelsey a card giving her details about where to hop off and walk to.

When Kelsey arrived, she saw a crowd of people, an aisle of rose petals, and her (soon-to-be fiance) and oh-so-handsome boyfriend dressed in a navy blue suit amongst a bed of tulips with a saxophone player playing and a photographer snapping photos. Kelsey, however, was not in the best choice attire. She was wearing leggings, tennis shoes, a Gucci fanny pack, and a t-shirt that read “Can You Not?” While neither recall what either person said during the proposal, once Kelsey said yes, the crowd erupted and Adam’s mom and Kelsey’s co-worker hopped out from the crowd to hug and congratulate them. This was truly the best, most thought-out surprise Kelsey had ever experienced and there were a lot of “pinch me” moments to follow this proposal.

They spent the evening at a wonderful dinner at the Lambs Club in NYC, visiting with old friends that Adam made when he lived in NYC for 5 years. Kelsey, fortunately, did change her attire for dinner and was able to dress up.

Since then, they have been working on a wedding for September 2016 in Palm Springs. A desert wedding was something they both thought would be beautiful and relaxing. They are so excited to share their big day with their closest family and friends and can’t wait to be married!

From the couple… With Adam being from Charlotte, North Carolina, and Kelsey being from the Bay Area, we wanted something that exemplified the true beauty of where we fell in love and currently reside because we won’t live here forever. We wanted to create this memory for ourselves and also be able to share it with our friends and family. We both really love color but we wanted a beautiful, natural setting juxtaposed with a little playing of dress up and Betsi was the perfect person to capture this. Between the gorgeous rocks of El Matador beach, the sun setting along the Pacific Ocean, and our choice of attire, she captured some of our favorite photos of all time during what we all liked to call the “magic hour.” Betsi completely understood our vision for what we wanted to accomplish and we could not be happier with the result!

Al Fresco Valentine’s Day Wedding Inspiration

A pink bicycle + blooms + a basket full-o-chihuahua = possibly the cutest thing ever. And it’s just one snap from this charming al fresco Valentine’s Day shoot from Sheradee Hurst Photography and Inspire Events. It’s the perfect dose of rich reds, pinks and golds to prep us for a weekend packed with love. See more in The Vault!

From Inspire EventsThis brook was just rolling with the sounds of romance. The kind where you can’t help but hear chirping birds and the rippling brook. The real show stopper though, was the bridge. (Oh that bridge!) The contrast in the the stone makes it both stunning and captivating by tying in some classic Valentine’s Day colors, we created a traditionally romantic, yet anything but cliche’ feel to this Valentine’s Day shoot.

Creating this setting all came together around love in nature. From the plates with the flowers and butterflies, to the charger plates that mirrored the coloring of the blue green mossy cover on the river rocks. Gold flatware played delicately with the gold color in the trees when captured on film. With the sunlight shining on the changing seasonal beauty that is revealed, the gold was magnificent in the elements.

Pops of red in the floral were a must in the centerpieces and the pomegranate addition just added that extra bit of detail to the table. I wanted to incorporate deep rich colors that would really stand out in the setting. For this shoot, the flowers were a driving factor. The flowers were selected because they added to the gracefulness of the feeling. I also loved the garland for the table top. There is prominent eucalyptus, but there’s a handmade DIY for brides on the table also. Using coffee filters, a thick thread, and gold spray paint a DIY paper garland was created to accent the greenery. The garland added additional textures to the table top, something different and unique.

The playfulness of the script on the invitations, the addition of the bicycle and the little puppy all gave this shoot a lighter flare. The deep coloring of the envelopes tied to the dark wood naked table. Again, this continues to develop the brilliance of the color pallet chosen.

The cakes were paired perfectly, by the amazing Mishelle Handy Cakes. Her unmatchable talent was on display and on the mark. The delicate design and the subtle accents made for a lavish and elaborate cake of stunning artistry.

This dress was our top choice because it is so exquisite, something so feminine in a natural setting. Something so gorgeous in this place of no expectation; it was a natural fit. The head piece was also provide by J.J. Kelly and sparkled against the water. The reflecting sun off the water, the jeweled headpiece, and the glimmer in her eyes was as though she was catching the eye of her lover. All sparkling together to create a sort of glow around this gorgeous bride.

The soft, simplicity of the bride’s hair was intentional. It’s not overly done, it’s intentionally relaxed. It allowed the bride to shine and still showed the gorgeous headpiece. Andrea Lemonds nailed it with the hair and the splendid tie to the colors, accented by the brides make up, especially the lipstick choice. Magnificent!

The original detail in the design of the sitting couch really drew me in. Immediately upon seeing this for the first time, I knew I had to have it. It takes me to a place and time, free from the hustle and bustle, to a time when beauty was held in hands of those who deemed all beauty a treasure. The demure, reserved quality that is shown by the incredible Sheradee Hurst Photography in these film images is more than we can handle. Adding the naked table and chairs (George and Martha) as the Bride and Groom table was an inevitable decision. The rawness and the dark coloring of the wood on both the table and the chairs, set against the backdrop of the trees, the brook and the floor of the earth, allowed me to continue with the naturistic beauty but also adding some sophistication to the landscape.

The sitting couch was in itself, just lovely. The detail in the design of this couch draws you in with its textures. Being the original design, there was never a doubt this would be featured in the shoot. Adding the naked table and chairs (George and Martha) as the Bride and Groom table was an inevitable decision. The rawness and the dark coloring of the wood on both the table and the chairs, set against the backdrop of the trees, the brook, and the floor of the earth married naturistic beauty by adding some sophistication to the landscape.

Casual + Elegant North Carolina Backyard Wedding

Writing your own wedding vows? Then you’re definitely going to want to see this celebration, because this gorgeous Bride and her handsome Groom struck the perfect chord—a mix of humor, sentimentality, and most importantly, love. From Inkspot Crow FilmsEmily & Ed’s backyard wedding in rural North Carolina was truly spectacular. A perfect mix of familial comfort and Southern elegance. The setting was perfect- outside ceremony, al-fresco cocktails and dinner/dancing under a sailcloth tent. We incorporated the couples’ vows in their highlight film- because it truly paints a picture of their relationship and love for one another. 

From Gather Together Events… Emily & Ed fell in love in New York City and call Detroit home, but, their wedding was all things southern. Hosted on the bride’s mother’s property in Hurdle Mills, North Carolina, their special day was unique to this couple in every way possible.

Emily & Ed’s ceremony took place in backyard, surrounded by the home’s blooming garden. Combining several religious and cultural sentiments, the bride and groom exchanged vows during a carefully crafted ceremony. Friends of the couple read the Jewish seven blessings; Ed broke the glass and their sweet pup, Sasha, even made an appearance down the aisle! Emily & Ed’s ceremony was customized to be a meaningful reflection of them as a couple and the life they were beginning together.

Guests were treated with traditional southern hospitality from start to finish! Upon arrival, lemonade and acoustic bluegrass set the tone at the pre-ceremony social. Cocktail hour after the ceremony included passed sparkling wine and a signature cocktail: the “Ginger Boulevard,” made with bourbon, Grand Marnier and ginger liqueur.  Cheese grit cakes with wild mushrooms and pork sliders with green tomato butter were passed among lounge seating perfect for a chat for new family & friends. It was one of those sunny, spring days in North Carolina that you want to last forever!

After cocktail hour, the guests gathered under a gigantic sailcloth tent strung with market lights for dinner and dancing! The couple wanted a family-style supper to create a sense of community among guests.  It included coriander-crusted rack of lamb and Southern tomato-cheddar pies.  Similar to the menu, the design was a perfect balance of southern comfort and elegance. Farm tables were adorned with lush floral and greenery. Crepe myrtles towered over the guests and caught glimpses of light from the sparkling iron chandeliers.  After heart-felt toasts from family, the bride, groom and their guests feasted on cake and danced the night away under a starry, spring North Carolina evening. A beautiful spring day, glowing, elegant, welcoming décor, and the happiness of family and friends all around; Emily & Ed’s day was a dream!

A Tea Time Galentine’s Day Party

Valentine’s is less than a day away (!!!!!) so just in case you’re the last minute planning type we’ve got a dose of inspiration to save the day. From Lark & LinenI’m of the variety that looks for any and every excuse to celebrate. The one thing you’re guaranteed to find in my fridge at any given moment is a chilled bottle of champagne. I mean, you never really know when the need (or urge) to pop some bubbles will strike, and if I’ve learnt anything from those boyscouts it’s that one needs to be prepared at all times. I came to the realization long ago that we’re only here for a brief moment in time, so we’d better make the most of it while we’re able!

I know that Valentine’s day gets a bit of a bad wrap amongst some, but if you ask me, it’s just another excuse to consciously celebrate all of the relationships in your lives – romantic and otherwise. I adore my boyfriend, that goes without saying, but my girlfriends hold such a special place in my heart – one that could never be fulfilled by anyone else, and making them a priority is a must. So when my friend Gaby (http://www.thevaultfiles.com) approached me about putting together a Valentine’s Day afternoon tea party for the girls, it was a bit of a no brainer.

Sweet treats, delicious eats, incredible cocktails, warm tea, and all things over-the-top-girly were abundant. Basically? It was the best way to spend an afternoon. If you have a chance to throw your own mini Galentine’s day party, I highly recommend it. With photos hailing straight from Heidi Lau‘s lens, and florals done by none other than Blush & Bloom, it was a dream from beginning to end.

DIY Sparkle Cake Topper

Are any of you hosting a Valentine’s fete tonight or tomorrow? I’m loving that this heart-filled holiday falls on a weekend. There’s time for a Galentine’s soiree with your besties and Sunday brunch with your love. And if there are sweets involved (there should be), we’ve got this chic last-minute DIY for you to try. Why buy a cake topper when you can craft one as cute as this? Super simple how-to below!

Materials

Thin, sturdy cardboard
Gold confetti
Hot glue gun
Scissors and/or x-acto knife
Wooden skewer

instructions

step-1Cut a heart shape out of your cardboard using scissors, and then cut the inner portion of your heart out with an x-acto knife.

step-2Glue your cardboard heart cutout to a wooden skewer.

step-3Put hot glue all over your cardboard heart cutout and skewer (leaving room at the end bare to stick in your cake) and then cover your hot glued areas with gold confetti.

#SMPWedding101 – Importance of Working With Your Venue’s Preferred Vendors

Choosing your vendors is one of the most overwhelming tasks during the planning process – but it doesn’t have to be. Michelle Durpetti is here to share the good news – working with your venue’s recommended vendors can be a surefire way to success. With 15 years of producing events under her belt and her recent venture opening The Estate, a venue outside Chicago, she knows what works. And one thing she doesn’t worry about is knowing who to work with – here’s why!

Partners Not Just Proximity Picks

We like taking the phrase “suggested vendor” and applying a much more accurate phrase “creative partner.” Either way, whatever these vendors are called, they’re not just vendors popping up due to proximity or because they have lobbied to be there. They are our partners as we work tirelessly to bring the weddings that our clients dream about to life.

Worth the Investment

There is always much discussion about these vendor lists, and finding excellent, reputable, dependable talent who can execute your vision should be a decision made with care and consideration. As a planner, I always tell my clients to of course, be wary of budget, but to understand that talent and dependability are always worth the investment. You’re investing in your day, and ultimately yourselves, to have a streamlined, creatively collaborative planning process that culminates in a beautifully produced wedding with flawless timing, details and most important – celebration!

Cohesive Synergy

When we first began creating the various elements that go into a venue, we wanted to make sure that we were all on the same page, including our recommended vendors. It was important for us to make sure that each and every creative partner on the list was one that matched what we were trying to do within the space; create a timeless, elegant ballroom, inspired by the Italian Villas. So I sat down with the team and started thinking about who could work within those parameters and feel creatively fulfilled while orchestrating unforgettable celebrations.

Beware of Kickbacks

Look for the venues that invite their vendors, after careful consideration, not those that offer financial incentives. If you are beginning the process of planning your wedding, a wedding planner can be an integral part of successfully navigating through all of this preliminary leg work necessary before getting to the “fun stuff” (design, entertainment, etc.). First there needs to be some homework and some boundaries set so that you are ensuring a planning process for yourself that has manageable expectations as well as the right people on your team.

Ask the Questions

Ask your venue what the qualifying process is for partners to be on the list. When I plan weddings, I always discuss with my clients that I will not guarantee a vendor that I have not worked with before, mainly because I do not want to use my client’s wedding day as a “trial run” to see how a vendor delivers. Venues often apply this to the process when creating their recommended list.

Experience Pays Off

Each vendor working in our space has worked with me multiple times on a variety of events and weddings, creative shoots, and on my own private events. These talented individuals and companies work in our space with us when we are hosting key events, and that is how we get to know them and vice versa – so when our client’s big day is happening, we are all a finely tuned machine.

Partners Know the Details

These creative partners understand the layout of the space, load in, load out and all of the various “do’s and don’ts” that come along with your venue. They understand how to bring a wedding to life beautifully while adhering to the guidelines that protect the integrity of the space. They are reputable, provide quality service and we can guarantee that based on the relationships that we have with them. This cuts down on logistics, time and planning. The streamlined process is right there for our clients, and that is a relief for them and us as well.

Classic Dallas Wedding with a Dream Oscar De La Renta Gown

Classic weddings will always win my heart. The elegance, the grace, and the tradition make for timeless celebration, and this real wedding is all of the above. Photographed by Sarah Kate, there’s so many moments to love (can you even handle that Oscar de la Renta gown?!) and we’ll be poring over each bit. Get started in The Vault.

From The Bride… Jere and I first met in Dallas. I was living in New York at the time and he was living in Midland, a small town in Texas. We were in Dallas spending time with family for Easter weekend, but I ventured out to meet my friends at Javier’s on that Friday night. Jere was at Javier’s with mutual friends. We met in the cigar bar in the back, ordering margaritas. That Sunday I got a “poke” on Facebook and a long distance relationship began. We did long distance for a year, New York to Midland and then I moved back home to Dallas a year before we got married. We now live in charming Midland and I am learning how to live in a small town. Having the love of my life next to me makes it easy.

The Proposal

I was going to Midland to meet Jere for the weekend, but he surprised me at Love Field Airport in Dallas before I could get on the plane for his town. Where were we going? New York City! Jere was a not a big surprise person so this was a huge surprise. We went and grabbed a beer while we waited for our flight to the big city. I was so curious!! Was this the weekend? I was trying so hard not to get my hopes up. He told me that he wasn’t telling me what we were doing, where we were staying or how many days we were there.

We landed and he told the cab “78th and Madison”. The cab took us to the Carlyle Hotel. I have always wanted to stay there. It is a New York classic, so romantic. We had a glass of champagne before our dinner downtown at Il Mulino. We were carbo loading as we were training for a marathon that February in Austin which meant the next morning we had a long 12 mile run to complete. Our dinner was amazing – best pasta and bread I have ever had. Jere seemed nervous, but I still had no idea if this weekend was THE weekend.

We were set to run the next morning after breakfast. Because I didn’t bring the appropriate clothing for 12 degree snowy weather in NYC, I had to put on so many random layers! I had a fancy scarf, tie dye hat, hiking socks on my feet and my hands – no gloves. We started our run from the Carlyle and around central park ending 12 miles by the Central Park Boat House, Bethesda Terrace fountain. He said “Kate, let’s go over there and look by the fountain.” I walked ahead, getting nervous at this point. Was this the moment? He said, “Kate, wait I have a question,” he was on a knee. He proposed. “Yes!!!” His little sister Catherine, my best friend Carla and his cousin Cathleen were all right there taking pictures of us, hiding!

The Planning

What type of venue were you looking for? We decided Dallas because we both had family there, it just made more sense. I didn’t like the idea of having people travel too far to celebrate! I wanted to have the ceremony at the church I grew up in and a reception outside under the stars and with a tent. I had always imagined a big tent with lights, dancing and smiles. The tent was built over the pool at the Dallas Country Club.

The Dress

Oscar de la Renta designed my dress. It was one of the last ones he designed before he passed away. That made it extra special. It was a ball gown. I felt so pretty and very myself. I stayed in my dress the whole night. I purchased it in Dallas at Neiman Marcus.

The Day

The best part of the day was seeing Jere for the first time plus being excited with my mom, best friends and future mother in law/sisters all day leading up to it. That morning, Jere dropped off a flower with a note at my parents’ house where I had been living (for 2 months) until Jere and I got married. That was special to wake up with my parents greeting me with breakfast on my wedding day.

Words of Wisdom

What advise do you have for other brides? One of my friends Brittany told me, “Don’t let the wedding get in front of the wedding.” It really is about you and your fiance, not the party, at the end of the day. The Wednesday before your wedding have a date with your person, just you two. Have a glass of wine, relax and talk about your excitement after exchanging a gift or letter.

Raspberry & Rose Champagne Cocktail

My husband and I always talk a big game when making Valentine’s plans; fancy restaurant, cozy cabin trip, etc, etc. But often times we find ourselves snuggled up on the sofa with dinner and a movie and endless supplies of champagne. It’s heaven and this raspberry & rose champagne cocktail whipped up by T Bakes and designed + photographed by Brancoprata will fit right in with our Feb. 14 snuggle sesh.

From Tânia and Diogo at T Bakes… Owning a company together means that we spend a good part of our days working and it’s not always easy to come home and turn off the business talk. Sometimes in the bustle of everyday life it can be easy to just go through the motions and not always have quality time with each other. Instead of the traditional valentine’s sweethearts gift exchange, this year we decided to give each other the gift of time. So, for one evening, time slowed down as we shared in mundane but meaningful tasks like making a cocktail or setting the table, in preparation for a soirée of celebrating love and life as newlyweds.

Taking the time to be present and sharing in every step made this extra special. We kicked off the celebration with a delicious and delicate raspberry and rose champagne cocktail. The rose syrup makes it fragrant while the raspberry liqueur gives it a punch of flavor, all gracefully balanced by Moët & Chandon’s softness. Diogo prepared a lovely meal, as he does most days – so much so that he has been named our very own household chef! But no celebration would be complete without cake and so Tânia made her famous champagne chiffon cake with raspberry coulis and belgian white chocolate cream, truly befitting of Valentine’s Day.

We believe happiness is found in small acts of love, taking the time to share in everyday’s life and celebrate each milestone together is important. This valentine’s we are toasting to the future, looking forward with hope and excitement and promising to always make time for each other!

Raspberry & Rose Champagne Cocktail

  • Champagne
  • 1 tablespoon Raspberry Liqueur
  • ½ teaspoon Rose Syrup
  • (1 part sugar to 1 part water with a couple drops of rose water)
Instructions
  1. Mix the raspberry liqueur and the rose syrup and pour into your chosen glass.
  2. Top with champagne, mixing as you pour.
  3. Add fresh raspberries and rose petals to garnish and enjoy!

Sweet San Diego Surprise Proposal

I wasn’t sure if I was just being overly emotional, letting Valentine’s vibes go to my head, but after sharing this video with the other SMP editors, the Kleenex was being passed around faster than you could say “sweetest proposal ever.” Focused Bliss Productions captured it as it all went down but not before spending some time with this thoughtful gentleman and learning a bit more about the lady he was about to get on one knee for. Watch it all unfold and let those happy tears fall freely!

A Surprise Proposal with a Little Help from Gray Malin

To say I’m in love with photographer Gray Malin‘s work would be putting it mildly. From his wanderlust-inducing La Dolce Vita series to the whimsical scenes in Gray Malin at the Parker, any one of his photos is guaranteed to make me smile. And today, my smile is from ear-to-ear because this happy photo is also one Groom’s sweet proposal! That’s right, this thoughtful Groom contacted Gray to surprise his girlfriend with what I think may be the cutest proposal ever—just saying!

From the Groom-to-Be… Nicole & I were introduced in high school but started dating in college. She went to the University of Texas and I attended SMU, so we spent our weekends traveling between Dallas and Austin (although I spent a LOT more time on the road than she did!). I knew I wanted to pursue a career in film and Nic had always wanted to be in LA, so I landed a job at a talent agency and we moved here, along with our pup Wills, as soon as I graduated. 

We have been fans of Gray’s work for years, starting our collection the year that we moved to LA. We both take a lot of pride in our home and are always on the lookout for cool pieces that we’ll be able to keep forever. Our first purchase from Gray was one of his classic beach scenes and we’ve since added several more.

When Nicole surprised me with the “I AM BUSY” print, I was inspired to incorporate our shared love of Gray’s work into my wedding proposal. I reached out to Gray to ask if it’d be possible to shoot something with the phrase MARRY ME, thinking that I was really setting myself up for disappointment given the demand for his work. But, sure enough, Gray responded and told me how much he loved the idea and that he could shoot it 2 short weeks later while in Palm Springs. The rest was history and I was able to curate the entire proposal around the print – which turned out absolutely perfect, I should mention. I decided to recreate the photo in person at our favorite celebration spot, Mr. Chow. Fast forward a few weeks…she said YES!


From the Bride-to-Be…The fact that Don was able to pull this off is really impressive. He has the hardest time keeping surprises from me and there were so many fine details to the event that I really can’t believe it! We have been dating for several years and grown so much in our time together that I was absolutely overcome with emotion when I realized what was going on. He always goes above and beyond to take care of me, but he totally outdid himself. Seeing the print was the icing on the cake – our shared admiration for Gray’s work is even greater now than before.  

From Gray Malin… It was an honor to play such a sweet role in Don & Nicole’s love story. ​I mean, it’s just incredible to think that your artwork can help bring two people together and ultimately become a story that we will be able to share with loved ones for years to come. I have to say, though it’s definitely a fun twist to include it in the proposal. Who knows, maybe it’ll be something we add to our Up & Away series for other inspired couple’s proposals?

 When Don approached me, I thought it was such a cute and unique idea, that I couldn’t say no. I was happy to do it! I also love that they owned a whopping 5 pieces of mine and already were so connected to the GM lifestyle.

From The Bride…We wanted our wedding to feel like US; if our friends and family stepped into this wedding blindly, we would have wanted them to be able to guess that the elements of the wedding, the styling, the decor was dreamt up by us and put together by the two of us.

Brian and I both love working on projects together; whenever we can, we work together creatively and whatever we put together feels much more “ours”. One of Brian’s talents is woodworking, and this skill and hobby has now become a big part of us. For our engagement, Brian created a puzzle ring box for me by taking different pieces and types of natural wood, and over the course of months, created this beautiful ring box that can only be opened by navigating through the puzzle that spells out LOVE. I loved this wooden box for many reasons — for how beautiful it was, but also the love and thought that went in on this item. For our wedding, we wanted to include items and elements important to us and we worked together to incorporate natural wood into our big day. All the signs were cut by Brian and hand lettered by me. For our ceremony, we wanted to include elements that were meaningful to us, and we decided to assemble a wooden box together. We bought two pieces of wood together and Brian spent time carving Dove-Tail joints, a joint known for its strength, to join the pieces of wood and to create this box. Inside the box, Brian and I wrote letters to one another, to be read at our one year anniversary. During the ceremony, Brian and I assembled this box together, with the wooden pieces representing the two of us joining together and the dove-tail joint representing the strength we want for our marriage. This portion of our ceremony, though simple, was meaningful for the both of us.

Once engaged, there are so many ideas and elements of weddings that a bride will learn and encounter, and it can be so easy to get lost in all of these ideas, all of which are wonderful in their own way. However, thinking about the reasons ‘why’ something is important or significant to you, rather than just focusing on all the most beautiful trends happening at the moment, then all the elements, decor, and all the little details for the wedding will come together so much more easily…and best of all, it will then be something that is incredibly meaningful and unique!

There are so many beautiful memories from our wedding it’s hard to pick just a few to share. However, I will always remember the moment that Brian and I did our first look. Brian and I met in high school and then dated for 8 years, and planning a wedding can at times feel so busy, so when I finally saw my groom on the day of the wedding, it was so wonderful and I felt like I could take a nice deep breath of fresh air. I will always remember that moment forever.

Sharing a fun father-daughter dance with my dad was also a great memory I will always remember. Surprisingly, I had never had a dance with my dad before because my dad deemed himself “not a dancer”. For my wedding though, he busted out his own little dance on the spot, and all I had to do was follow along with his awesome moves and laugh with my dad.

Another memory I will be forever be grateful for, is that my loyal, funny, clownish long-hair Dachshund, Roper, was able to partake in our wedding! All dog owners know what an important part of the family our furry besties are, and I loved knowing Roper was there on my special day and of course seeing him walk down the aisle as my ring bearer!
