Why Your Gown is Basically Everything

There are so many reasons why we might choose a wedding for Style Me Pretty. The story, the details, the pure love that permeates every last images. But in this case…I took one look at the gown and was DONE. Ethereal and romantic while being so timeless and elegant. And photographed to utter perfection by Audra Wrisley. Every other perfect detail? Just the icing on the cake.

From Audra Wrisley PhotographyThis lovely botanical garden wedding embodies everything I love about the spring season, with soft pastel colors and a crisp Virginia breeze!

This couple’s amazing day set in a garden venue was a dream from start to finish, designed around a beautiful color palette of soft blush, lavender, blue and gray. The bride’s Watters Woo gown was elegant, dreamy and whimsical, which made for a gorgeous focal point for the wedding day. Their outdoor ceremony was full of quiet, intimate moments, as the couple spoke their vows with the birds chirping and a soft breeze rustling in front of their family and friends. The evening ended with dinner and dancing in Meadowlark’s greenhouse atrium, which a perfect way to end their lovely garden wedding.

As Amy and Paul are from Vietnamese descent, they also held a traditional ceremony, honoring their families who were all in attendance. It was a beautifully colorful morning, and Amy look incredible in her custom red dress. As photographers, we’ve rarely felt so welcomed by their warm families, and it was such an honor capturing these important moments in their lives.

A Classic Fall Wedding With a Teal Twist

Take a classic color palette – ivory and gold – and add in a punch of color (teal!) and what do you get? One really fun and fabulous wedding that we’re pining over (and pinning nonstop)! Brigham & Co. captured every delightful detail of this Connecticut celebration, from the unique wedding dress (designs by Amy Kuschel and Jenny Yoo combined) to lots of late night dancing thanks to Around Town Entertainment. See it all in our Vault right this way!

From Brigham and CoThey didn’t know it yet, but Sarah and Brendan lived only three blocks apart before they found one another. With big hearts, and a knack for good humor, it’s no surprise a little comic relief took place when they met for their first date at Pen Rose in NYC when Sarah hugged a guy she thought was Brendan, only to find out he hadn’t arrived just yet. After this first encounter, these two were bound together for what would soon become forever.

On September 17, 2016, Sarah and Brendan wed on a picture-perfect autumn day at the Hartford Golf Club in West Hartford, Connecticut. Sarah readied with her maids at her mother and father’s elegant Farmington, Connecticut home, donning an assortment of fine details and a wedding dress that turned heads – an elegant Amy Kuschel and Jenny Yoo combo.

Sarah and Brendan joined their love in an Interfaith ceremony held outdoors on the grounds of the Hartford Golf Club, beginning this next, wild chapter of life with the groom’s customary “breaking of the glass.” A modest gathering of those nearest and dearest cheered and exalted as the celebration moved gracefully into a beautiful, sunset-lathered cocktail hour, and onward into a candlelit reception adorned with white roses, variegated greens, and live music to dance the night away.

Hot Air Balloon Engagement for a Pilot Bride-to-be

Leave it to This Modern Romance to photograph one of THE coolest engagements to ever hit our pages. The bride Hillary, a pilot, wanted to involve her love flying and a hot air balloon photo session was just the ticket. Go see Hillary and Tim’s incredible adventure waiting in the gallery this way.

From the couple, Hillary + Tim… We chose to incorporate hot air balloons into our engagement photos because Hillary has always been inspired by hot air balloons. The simplicity of their design makes them not only beautiful to admire, but powerful enough to fly.

“Hot air balloons are symbolic of an adventure where you don’t know where you’ll end up when it’s over. You have to be willing to go where the wind literally blows you. “

-Hillary

Hillary is a pilot, currently working as a flight instructor teaching people to do what she loves: how to fly. Tim works as an electrical engineer. Tim keeps her grounded and always coming back home but never passes up an adventure with her. In just the short two and a half years they’ve been together, they have traveled to Canada, Mexico, New Orleans, Seattle, Nashville and more. They plan on traveling the world together and already have plans to go on a Mediterranean cruise for their honeymoon.

How To Decorate for the Holidays Using Absolutely NO Red

As a lover of all things neutral, you won’t find much red and green in our home during the holidays. Aside from the Christmas tree and garland, my festive approach is a bit more inline with my laid back, coastal casual vibe. So when Palm Beach Lately and The Event Group Design & Decor sent over this chic holiday inspiration—full of fresh eucalyptus, blush and gold—I knew I’d be having a little pinning party! Whether you’ve got palm trees in your backyard or just want a modern take on cheer, Shea Christine has more for you in The Vault.

From Palm Beach LatelyThe holidays are our very favorite time of year and this year, we couldn’t wait to creatively incorporate our signature Palm Beach style into our holiday decorations.

We started by decking Danielle’s front porch in greenery from Frontgate. We hung big green wreaths on all of the windows, draped garland on the railings and set Christmas trees by the front steps. To have a Palm Beach feel, we added blush ribbon and a gold pineapple ornament to the wreaths and planted the trees in white bamboo planters. We also dressed up a classic white bench with gifts wrapped in Sugar Paper LA’s blush and gold holiday wrapping paper and set our green Hunter boots with blush bows next to our darling new “hello” front doormat.

Inside our homes, we wanted to continue the blush, gold and white color palette. In Beth’s dining room, we decided to hang beautiful blush glass ornaments by Frontgate from her dining room light fixture. Our talented friend Carla from The Event Group Design and Decor helped to hang the ornaments and weave eucalyptus leaves through the light fixture to add a touch of greenery. We set the table with gold and white plates from West Elm, blush glasses from Anthropologie and gold flatware from Juliska. To complete the tablescape, we used white napkins from Pioneer Linens, blush napkin rings and gold pineapple place card holders that we had on hand and added the leftover greenery to the center of the table.

Throughout the holiday season, we love serving our “You’ve Been Flocked” Palm Beach Lately cocktail. The champagne and St. Germain are festive spirits, the grapefruit juice adds great color and the sprig of green rosemary is the perfect garnish. Happy holidays!

Hanging Florals Created a WOW Reception Design

After searching high and low for their perfect venue, Rachael and Matthew chose to bring all their people to Pippin Hill Farm, soaking in the magic of the Blue Ridge mountains while vowing to forever. Momental Designs set the stage with a stunning stationery suite while Southern Blooms by Pat’s Floral Designs dressed up the day with all-white stems (have you seen that hanging floral installation?!) while East West filmed and Laura Gordon photographed. See how the fun unfolded in the gallery this way.

From the Bride… Getting engaged was beyond exciting for the two of us. Matt managed to choreograph not only a surprise engagement but an incredible post-engagement celebration party with all of our closest family and friends, several of whom flew in from around the county. From that moment on, we knew that the most important aspect to our future wedding was having all of our closest loved ones together, aka trapped, for not just one day, but for an entire weekend! We looked at venues in Minnesota (where I am from), as well as venues in DC (where we currently reside and where Matt’s family is), but we selfishly wanted something a bit more remote. We wanted somewhere that required our wedding guests to come in and stay awhile, which meant we had to go outside of our hometowns.

After attending a wedding in Keswick, VA in June of 2015, we were sold on the area. We ultimately chose Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards in North Garden, VA and we couldn’t have been happier with our decision. The sheer beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the many wineries in the area, and the overall peace that you feel when you are outside the hustle and bustle of the major metropolitan areas many of our guests were coming from made it the perfect choice for us and our guests.

Thinking back on the planning process, I had a true vision from start to finish of what I wanted our big day and weekend to be. Despite our wedding taking place at a Farm, Pippin Hill truly can be transformed into a little bit of everything. The outdoor ceremony grounds have the backdrop of their winery and the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the reception hall takes place in their beautiful restored barn. For me, I wanted the day and night to feel like a dream. Hanging greenery and white flowers made it feel whimsical throughout, and the many high low candles made the space feel warm, inviting, and enchanting in a sense. The hanging florals and our Huppah, created by Southern Blooms, were breathtaking and truly captured my vision. Aside from the beautiful florals and decor, the food was something of great interest to us. Pippin Hill did and incredible job with our dinner and Cakes by Rachel went above and beyond with our desserts. We opted to do individual cakes at each table couple with an assortment of mini pies that were served on gold mirrored trays. The cake was a Chocolate Sour Cream cake filled with 2 layers of Chocolate Mousse and a layer of Triple Cream and Fresh Raspberries, iced with Champagne Buttercream. The pies were Key Lime, Peach Pecan Crumble and Strawberry Rhubarb. All of these were decadent and delicious – an absolute favorite of our guests!

Overall, our entire wedding weekend was so special and everything we could ever dream it it to be. After a wonderful ceremony, great food, amazing dancing, and a send off in a vintage car, we left so thankful for our friends and family. We spent the day after our wedding at a post-wedding brunch, and the afternoon at several of the amazing wineries in the Charlottesville area. We were lucky enough to have our guests in for the whole weekend and it made for memories to last a lifetime.

12 Most Unique Baby Names of 2016

When my husband and I found out we were expecting half way through 2016, we immediately had a name brainstorming session. Of course, we had thrown out most-loved names over the years… but most of those ideas definitely changed once I was actually pregnant. Our main goal? To give our baby a unique name that stood out among the rest. 2016 definitely brought on a plethora of creative naming inspiration. Just take it from Nameberry, they’re letting us in on this past year’s gems!

From Linda Rosenkrantz and Abby Sandel of Nameberry… The Defining Event of 2016 may have been the presidential election, but the political names that hit the headlines –Donald? Hillary? Bernard?– are unlikely to find themselves on many new baby birth certificates. And so for Nameberry’s Names of the Year we’ve looked beyond politics to other bold-faced names that reflect current trends and are prime to inspire baby names of the future.

Aziz

Aziz Ansari is the creator, writer and star of the innovative Netflix show Master of None, representing the impressive strides made this year in the diversification of the TV landscape. Ansari, from an Indian Muslim family, tackles serious cultural issues in a smart, satirical, witty way. The lively and colorful name Aziz, which means powerful, respected and beloved, is one of the 99 names of Allah and is common in the Muslim world and has great cultural crossover potential. There’s even a girls’ name equivalent, Aziza.

Bowie

Though the music world lost three beloved, iconic figures this year—Prince, David Bowie and Leonard Cohen — it was Bowie (actually born David Jones)’s, adopted surname that almost immediately became a viable name for babies. Bowie wasn’t totally unheard of as a baby name before, but now has shot up to Number 453 on Nameberry, and become an instant celebrity fave: actor Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Hale in Twilight) even used it for his daughter, Bowie Presley.

Cuba

One of the big stories of the year was the restoration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US after 50 years, followed by the death of leader Fidel Castro in November. Apart from its political reverberations, Cuba is a geographical place name (it was on the popularity lists back in the 1890s), associated with Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr, whose roots are not in Cuba but Barbados. With place names for babies now hot and parents looking beyond the popular Savannah and London, Cuba may enjoy wider use.

Ivanka

In the sea of ordinary names most visible during this tumultuous political cycle, the name of the President-elect’s influential daughter stands out as one of the most distinctive. Quite common in Slavic countries as a nickname for Ivana (her mother’s name), and despite its exotic appeal, it’s likely to remain a Single-Celebrity name in the US—the Oprah of the political world—for the foreseeable future. Ivanka’s larger impact on girls’ names may be inspiring parents to name their daughters after their moms.

Simone

This quiet French classic got a double shot of adrenalin when not one but two Simones became shooting-star record breakers in the 2016 Rio Olympics: Simone Biles was the vault and floor gold medalist, setting a US record high of four medals in a single Olympics, while Simone Manuel became the first African-American female swimmer to win a gold medal. The name also was borne by two prominent French writers—feminist Simone De Beauvoir and philosopher/writer Simone Weil who could provide further inspiration.

Wrigley

When the Chicago Cubs pulled off their astounding World Series win this year, ending a 108-year championship drought, their fans went ballistic, and some of them wanted to honor the team in their offsprings’ names. But rather than call their cubs Cub or Ben or Bryan or any other player name, they discovered a more subtle and circuitous reference: Wrigley, for the name of the winners’ playing field. 2009 Miss America Katie Stam used it after losing a bet to her husband when the Cubs won the Series. And that baby Wrigley (better than Wiggly) won’t be the last!

Alden

Alden Ehrenreich is slated to play the young Han Solo, aka the new pilot of the Millennium Falcon. Steven Spielberg himself discovered Ehrenreich a dozen years ago at a bat mitzvah. The actor has worked steadily since, but Solo should prove to be his biggest role by far. We’ve yet to meet many children called Han, but Alden fits right in with current favorites like Landon and Aiden.

Boomer

New dad Michael Phelps joked that his son would “definitely be the cool kid” thanks to the distinctive name he and wife Nicole Johnson chose for their May 2016 baby: Boomer. Boomer’s not just another celebrity kid. The Olympian’s son commands over 750,000 Instagram followers of his own. That’s many more than his dad’s official channels, even after the swimmer became the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time at this summer’s Rio games. While there may not be many babies named Boomer, going with your heart and making a name by appending –er to the end of any beginning are two of the lessons we predict this upbeat name to promote.

Bruno

The unstoppable Bruno Mars released his third studio album in 2016, won two more Grammy Awards, and became one of the few performers to appear at a second Super Bowl halftime show. That’s quite the year, and it’s safe to say that parents might take note of his distinctive first name. Born Peter Gene Hernandez, Bruno is the singer’s childhood nickname. We may also see more babies named Mars, not only a celebrity name but one of the ancient celestial and mythological names becoming fashionable.

Lin-Manuel

Genre-blurring Hamilton dominated Broadway this year, becoming a perpetually sold-out, must-see show, a mix of rap and musical theater unlike anything before it. It earned a record-setting sixteen Tony Award nominations, winning eleven, along with a Grammy and a Pulitzer Prize. At the center of it all is actor, rapper, composer, and MacArthur Genius Award recipient Lin-Manuel Miranda. A native New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent, Miranda’s first name comes from a poem about the Vietnam War, Nana Roja Para Mi Hijo Lin Manuel. What we see as influential about Lin-Manuel: Its literary inspiration, its hyphenization, and its mix of gender images.

Maeve

In October, Michael Crichton took us to Westworld, a new HBO original series. The action takes place in a Wild West theme park, where the residents are not what they seem. Thandie Newton plays park host Maeve Millay. No spoilers here, but know that the sharp, simple Irish name was originally worn by a warrior queen. It’s the latest in a long line of Irish baby names to catch on in the US, currently ranked in the Top 500 and rising.

Wilder

Wilder appeals to parents for plenty of reasons. It’s preppy and outdoorsy, an unexpected name with an on-trend sound. It combines so many trends hot today—word names, surname-names, nature names, renegade names – that it may be the William of the future. Wilder makes the Names of the Year list thanks to the late comic actor, Gene Wilder. The star of Young Frankenstein and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory passed away in August. Born Jerome Silberman, Gene Wilder took his stage name from American writer Thornton Wilder, reminding us that the name is nicely literary, too.

Love Me Softly: A Sophisticated Bridal Boudoir

To me, there is a single key ingredient to a successful boudoir shoot. Subtlety. The sweet whisper of sexy that graces every image is what allows a boudoir shoot to stay timeless and lovely, capturing such a romantic and momentary time in your lives. And this one – shot to perfection by Juliet Young – is restraint at it’s most beautiful. Click here to see the whole collection.

From Juliet YoungConfidence is truly beautiful. A confident woman inspires everyone she is near to love themselves and appreciate all the little things that make them who they are. This mindset was the main inspiration of this bridal boudoir. I kept the tone light and neutral to completely focus on the understated beauty of simplicity, from the soft wave of the bride’s hair and light, neutral makeup to the minimalistic styling of the venue.

Our bride did her own hair and makeup – it was very important to me that this be as realistic as possible. The elegant 1930’s vintage Gossamer dressing gown really set the mood for this shoot and goes well with the bride’s soft lines and skin. The gown’s delicate flower detailing and lace wrapped our bride in just enough to cover her yet allowed for some playful peek-a-boo moments with each movement.

We kept styling to a minimum, allowing the Old European charm of The Ravington to really shine. Candles surrounding the pew set the scene for our bride to feel sure of herself and sophisticated. Her soft details contrasted beautifully with our wild, organic bouquet that combines a soft color pallet with unexpected wispy details and pastel, soft blooms. Transitioning upstairs to the bright and airy bridal suite, we continued with our minimal styling, allowing our bride to put up her hair and bathe in the soft window light. She is anticipating her wedding day and day dreaming of their future together. She reads his love letter, and his words inspire feelings of security and tender love.

I strongly believe that every woman should consider a boudoir session the morning before their wedding or before they are married. It is a great way to give, not only to your husband, but also to yourself.

Red Lips + Pink Peonies Make This Modern Wedding Magical

I love little touches that pack a punch and nothing tickles me more than red lips and red nails on a classic bride. Only way to make it even better? Pops of hot pink throughout thanks to lots and lots of peonies. Sposto Photography captured this modern glam Napa wedding that has it all – see more fun pics in our Vault right this way!

From the Bride… Jesse had surprised me with an unforgettable proposal at The Carneros Inn, so it felt very special to also host our wedding at such a beautiful property to build on more wonderful memories.

Our wedding was in May, and the grounds at The Carneros Inn had started blooming and the gardens were beautifully lush. We kept florals simple and went with a summertime citrus palette of grapefruit pinks, bright oranges, and I chose a bold bouquet of bright pink peonies that added a real pop of color as I walked down the aisle.

It started raining the morning of our wedding, and we were worried we would have to move our outdoor ceremony inside, but half an hour before the ceremony began, as if right on cue, the clouds disappeared, the sun was shining, and we could not have asked for a more beautiful backdrop to exchange the vows we had written for each other.

Jesse and I had so much fun on our wedding day with our friends and family, enjoying great food and wine, and dancing the night away. I love re-living that day through our wedding photos and remembering the overwhelming feeling of love and warmth that filled the room that day. I’m so grateful for my wonderful husband, our wonderful friends and family, and can’t wait to plan our future vow renewal someday!

Say Hello to a New Decade with a Gorgeous and Sparkling Dinner

Sparkle is always a good idea. It fits any and all celebrations including the big ones; i.e. entering a brand spankin new decade. For this 40th birthday an elegant backyard dinner party was planned by Deets & Things and glittering headpieces and fancy attire were on the agenda. Add in a private chef and photographs by L & B Photography and you have the perfect way to celebrate 40.

My sister was never the type to make a big deal about her birthday but all while growing up, she always made sure I had the prettiest birthday parties on the block. So when she turned 40 this year, I wanted to return the favor and couldn’t let her shy away from a worthy celebration. A big production wasn’t her style so I planned an intimate candlelit dinner in her beautiful Newport Beach backyard.

The gals were given glittery headpieces and all wore white while the men were dressed to the nines in black and bow ties. The long table draped in soft neutrals with beautiful agate place cards written by Seniman Calligraphy popped against the lush greens of her backyard.

We enjoyed music, craft cocktails, and appetizers before sitting down to an amazing four course fine dining by the talented Daniel Sutcliff of Your Sous Chef.

It was just a small token to all the wonderful birthday memories she made for me as a kid but that night, it was everything to laugh, reminisce, and shed a few happy tears in the glow of candlelight.

Inspiration for a Florence-Set Wedding

Florence is easily one of the most romantic cities in the world, so it only made sense when European-based vendors Sandra Aberg PhotographyA Very Beloved WeddingSequence Five and an entire team of talent chose it as the setting for their dreamy bridal shoot. They fully embraced the colors, the rich history, the very essence of Florence and the gallery is filled to the brim with must-see inspiration.

From A Very Beloved WeddingThis love story between Lisa and Francesco in inspired on their story and love for Florence. Getting engaged and married in Florence is embracing the colors of the city, it´s Renaissance and artful history. With the bridal shoot we portrayed a lighthearted, joyful and still enigmatic woman in Florence, who found her true love and bonding experience with her husband to be. This story is a visual representation of what happiness means and an illusion that seduces us to become part of Lisa’s and Francesco’s story.

He’s been getting mushy lately.

Like talking about your future. Wanting to cuddle on the sofa and just look at the lights on the tree rather than tune in to Friday night Football. If he has made a distinct shift into mush-ville, you know a ring is on the horizon.

He asks if you want to go on a trip.

Especially around the holidays when no one goes on trips unless they involve great Uncle Albert and a really bad fruitcake. If he ponies up a Caribbean trip right when you’re brainstorming on ways to avoid getting your cheeks pinched by Grandma Ruth, you know love is in the air.

He cranks up his cheap side a bit.

Saying no to big group dinners at fancy restaurants (because aren’t those the WORST for paying way more than you should be thanks to that absurdly expensive bottle of champagne that was ordered!?), or suggesting that you netflix and chill instead of going out on the town? He could have a very expensive reason for resorting to his often buried cheap side.

He asks what your pinterest handle is.

This one’s tricky because he either wants to buy you a bag or a diamond ring. And it could go either way.

He is acting squirrely and nervous.

He’s fidgety. And can’t sit still. When boys make big decisions, it often means they can’t plop on to the sofa with the same sense of ease that they normally do and instead, they putz around, fussing with everything, asking a million questions and generally just being odd. Especially on the day-of.

He plans a trip – without you.

Because a trip without you could very well mean a trip to see your dad which has a high likelihood of being built around “the talk.” He could also just be going to Vegas with his buddies but a little snooping around should get you the answers you need pretty fast.

Your parents start acting weird.

And if there is a trip to have “the talk” on the horizon, it will be made all the more clear when your mom starts acting aloof. This is a classic mom response. Dad’s are generally a little more cool. Moms? Not usually so cool.

He encourages you to go out for manicures with your girlfriends.

Manicure = cute hands when something sparkly is placed upon it. And this is especially true if you getting a manicure has never even entered into his brain space.

You notice that he is checking out other girls’….RINGS!

You notice your man checking out a girl. Not totally unusual. Take notice of exactly where he is looking. If he’s checking out her hands then you know what’s in store. That said, hands are generally kept near rears so again, this one could go either way.

He doesn’t seem to be doing any major shopping.

Because he’s done! If his gift is a big ass sparkly ring, he doesn’t need to do another darned thing!

Saturday Morning Movie: First Comes Match.com, Then Comes Marriage

We got a sneak peek on all the love between these two when we got to witness THE BIG QUESTION being asked – thanks to Focused Bliss Productions. And then once again, they were there to capture the magic unfold when these cuties said “I do” in front of their friends and family. If you ever doubt the success of online dating, look no further than this story right here, where fate and a little thing called Match.com made dreams into romantic reality.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/186300130 600 338]

From Focused Bliss Productions… Ben came across Janelle’s profile on Match.com and immediately knew he had to message her. He took her to the Smoking Goat in North Park San Diego, CA for their first date and couldn’t stop smiling the moment that she walked in the door. So it was only appropriate to propose to her at the same exact spot. Ben had Focused Bliss Productions, a leading wedding cinematography company in San Diego, CA, capture not only this candid and momentous event in which Janelle said YES, but also the romantic story that led up to this most special day (see here on Style Me Pretty!)!

Now, a year later, Ben and Janelle held an intimate gathering of friends and families to witness them officially tying the knot at the Mount Woodson Castle amidst the beautiful hills of Ramona, CA. With Southern California’s consistently warm weather, this winter wedding was held outdoors and it could not have provided a more stunning and breath-taking setting. The day was filled with wonderful and non-traditional details from Janelle’s sparkling wedding dress and shoes to the dessert bar of donuts that replaced the wedding cake to their grand exit at night into a classic getaway car.

The best moment of all, however, was when the couple spoke their vows under the golden-lit trees adjacent to the castle. They shared sentimental words with Ben thanking Janelle for saying ‘yes’ to their first date, and again for their second date – providing the opportunity to pave the path for their relationship to come. The officiant, a friend of the couple, could not have more aptly described this than by telling the guests “If you know these two together, you should know exactly what love should look like.” If you yourself want to know what true love looks like… just click play!

#SMPWedding101 – Your Guide to Authentic Engagement Photos

Most of us have never been in front of a professional camera, so when it comes time to smile away for those engagement pics, how do you ensure success and avoid any awkwardness? Fret not my friends, we have Still55 Photography on hand to share their insight on making sure those engagement photos capture the true you, as authentic as can be and let’s get real… make sure they’re mantle worthy!

Gel With Your Photographer

This is the most important rule of thumb! If you’re not feeling your photographer’s personality during the consult, you’re probably not going to vibe with them very well during your session… which will turn into an awkward nightmare with moments that you don’t ever want to experience. The last thing you want is a stranger that doesn’t understand you or your significant other photographing you in an uncomfortable way. Go with your gut, if you feel like you could be friends with your photographer, you’re on the right track. Remember your photographer is the only vendor you’ll spend your entire wedding day with, so make sure you click and it will set the tone for the rest of your experience.

Ask Questions

When you’re interviewing your short list of photographers asking lots of questions is essential but there is one question you must ask to ensure you avoid a bad experience. Ask the photographer about their process before AND during the session; if their response seems random and fake, that’s how your images will more than likely turn out. Great artists have great processes in creating great work. Our process is founded on learning a lot about our couples and talking at length about how they wish to be captured. We learn what they want and what they don’t won’t beforehand. We also work with them on finer details such as maintaining a cohesive color palette that blends with their style and home decor, along with wardrobe and locations. Working out all of this with your photographer will build confidence before you ever step in front of their camera.

Trust

Once you’ve worked out all the details leading up to your session, the next step is to trust the plan. Overthinking the details can take you away from being yourself. Make a plan and then trust that plan.

Be You

When the day finally arrives you should already have gelled with your photographer, know exactly what to expect and trust the plan, so now it’s time to be YOU. No matter what, most people are a bit nervous at the beginning – that’s okay! Your photographer should know how to quickly work out the nerves and help you both relax. When I first meet a couple during the intentional consult, I pay attention to their subtleties, whether they smile a lot, or if they’re affectionate towards one another. The subtle mannerisms are the real you and if you’ve picked the right photographer, they should pick up on that. If they don’t, it’s okay to to speak up and say, “Thats not me, or that’s not us”. Be real, be you!

Focus on Each Other – Not the Camera

Lastly, I always tell my couples to ignore me and focus on each other. My job is to observe them, not for them to observe my camera. Hold hands, make each other laugh, be with each other, together, in the moment. Do your best to quiet your thoughts and be present, focused on each other. Trust me, if you ignore your photographer and give all your attention to one another, you will create authenticity just by being yourselves.

2017 Bridal Beauty Looks to Inspire

We get downright giddy when it comes to hair and makeup; add in the bridal element and before we know it, we’re head over heels heart-eyed. So when Mar of TEAM Hair & Makeup wanted to share some fresh bridal beauty looks to inspire all you newly engaged ladies out there, we literally jumped at the chance. And of course we needed some gorgeous gowns to pair all the lovely looks with and Gabriella New York Bridal Salon came to the rescue. Matthew Ree of CLY BY MATTHEW worked his magic behind the lens and the finished results? Let’s just say, our Friday has been made.

The “No Makeup” Makeup Look

From Mar of TEAM Hair & MakeupWe created a fresh faced look with a touch of a moisturizing water-based airbrush foundation and a little highlighter (in a “C” shape from cheekbone to the upper brow) to give an instant glow! Braids are back and have been all year so we created this soft and romantic take on a side braid to give a more “dressed up” feel with an effortless appeal.

The Bella dress by Reem Acra

From Gabriella of Gabriella New York Bridal Salon This style really speaks to our Gabriella New York bride. It’s beautiful and feminine with just the right amount of sexiness and edge. Because of the plunging neckline and stunning lace detailing, we felt that it would lend itself to a variety of hair and make up styles and just couldn’t resist seeing what the experts came up with!

Updo + Bold Lip

From Mar of TEAM Hair & MakeupShine may be fun for your lips, but for a more dramatic and vampy look, go matte! It’s a bolder look which then requires less overall makeup. Many matte lipsticks have moisturizers in them nowadays so you won’t feel like you’re in the Sahara Desert anymore! The hair for this look may look like a hot mess but it’s on purpose! Pretty easy to do too! Just straighten your hair and add in a texture spray (salt sprays work great too) and do a fun bun for that red carpet hair!

The Palace dress by Lela Rose

From Gabriella of Gabriella New York Bridal Salon We love this gown because of its clean lines and very “of the moment” off the shoulder neckline in the front and then the surprise amazing train detailing in the back. This is a perfect gown to highlight a fabulous hair style because there is no detailing such as lace, appliques or beading to compete with.

Smokey Eyes + Crazy, Fun Hair

From Mar of TEAM Hair & MakeupConsider natural tones when applying “smokey” eyeshadow colors to your eyes. We like less smoke and more lashes – we LOVE fun and flirty false eyelashes! This is the key to this soft, yet dramatic, look. THM Hair Extensions were added in for the tousled “down do”. We waved the hair with a one-inch iron, wrapping wide pieces around the barrel and then allowed the hair to cool before literally tossing her hair up and down! Pin the sides up and you have some sexy waves, which will stay out of your face throughout your wedding. Or use the volume and texture to create an amazing braided updo for later (dancing time?!).

The Greta dress by Elizabeth Fillmore

From Gabriella of Gabriella New York Bridal SalonElizabeth Fillmore used this amazing hammered silk for her Greta gown, which takes her iconic sheathe silhouette to a whole new level. It’s the perfect gown for that sophisticated, chic, sexy bride. It felt like the hair and make up options for this gown were endless, which is why we chose it. We just knew that Mar from TEAM Hair + Makeup would do something amazing and they did!!!

Pretty Finishing Touches

From Mar of TEAM Hair & Makeup… Hair accessories are the perfect finishing touch to any hairstyle. When choosing a piece for your hairstyle, keep in mind that less is more! It’s called an accessory because it meant to add a little, not a lot. For example, this delicate chain piece is the finishing touch to a fun boho inspired style.

The Freesia dress by Elizabeth Fillmore

From Gabriella of Gabriella New York Bridal SalonThis dress is a personal favorite of mine due to its nod to the 70’s and subtly sexy style. I felt that this gown would be a great way to showcase that 70’s hair that we love so much – think modern day Farrah Fawcett! It’s just an overall incredibly chic look.

The Maple Tree Top + Venus Skirt by Lihi Hod

From Gabriella of Gabriella New York Bridal SalonThis gown is the epitome of boho chic. The silhouette of the bodice gives off a “casual” vibe, but the gorgeous beadwork steps it up to be more than bridal worthy! We selected this gown because it really lends itself to an updo in order to highlight the beautiful detailing on the bodice. It also presented a unique challenge to style the bride’s hair up without being too traditional!

From Mar of TEAM Hair & Makeup… When your groom sees you walking down the aisle, wouldn’t it be nice if he recognized you? This is why so many women say for their wedding day look “I just want to look like myself” and we agree! Bridal hair and makeup, for us at TEAM, is more about the natural enhancement of a bride rather than a total overhaul! And these looks are perfect examples!

P.S. More coming soon…

Are you as obsessed with these looks as we are?! Stay tuned, more coming soon, including all the details to “Get the Look” for this one!

P.S.S. Even more magic from Matthew Ree…

As if we needed another reason to love Matthew Ree, he’s hosting a photography workshop in Cuba in February… and there are only a few spots left! Head right here to get all the details and join in on what can only be described as a once-in-a-lifetime experience! P.S. SMP will be presenting virtually!

Family Focused Lake Tahoe Wedding

With a backdrop like Lake Tahoe, it’s hard to imagine that anything could go wrong. Oh it can. And it did. But even when this bride’s venue didn’t work out at the 11th hour, she managed to pull off an intimate, gorgeous wedding that will clearly left a mark on the hearts of her guests. With stunning photos by Carmen Santorelli, a design by Stems by Diana and a sense of love bursting through every image – this wedding is easy to fall in love with. Click here for more!

From the bride…Brandon proposed to me on a random Wednesday night in October of 2014, I turned the corner to three pumpkins carved with the words Will You Marry Me? After going back and forth with what we wanted for our wedding, we decided on an small destination wedding in Lake Tahoe. Once we realized that random October date fell on a Saturday this year, we knew it was meant to be.

We originally had found a private estate online and thought it would be perfect, so we booked it! Well…once we arrived in Tahoe for our last bit of planning in April, we realized it wasn’t going to work. Panic set in and we were frantically searching online for the perfect venue, since all of our vendors were already booked I had to keep our special October date! The stars lined up for us that weekend because we found a true hidden gem. The Tahoma Boathouse, perched right on the lake, filled with old Tahoe charm, a gorgeous lush lawn for cocktail hour, a stunning fireplace for s’mores later in the night, and just the right size for our guests.

Being from San Diego where the sun shines 365 days a year, I was so conflicted on whether we should have a tent or not. Better safe than sorry, right? We rented a clear tent and had huge wooden chandeliers draped with florals by the amazing Stems by Diana, Celebrations Party Rentals strung twinkle lights around the ENTIRE property, it was magical.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner from Butter + Salt, danced the night away under the stars, the guys enjoyed the Cigar bar and everyone loved the beignets for dessert! Photography and videography were the two most important things for us, once we spoke with Carmen of Carmen Santorelli Photography, we knew she was our girl! Dax Victorino Films completely blew us away with a same day edit that played at the bar during the reception, our guests couldn’t believe it!

On that same October night, exactly two years later, we were married by Brandon’s stepdad with 65 of our closest family and friends right on the lake. There was so much love surrounding us that weekend, it was an absolute dream. To say Lake Tahoe will always have a special place in our hearts is an understatement.
