How to Plan a ‘Pinterest Wedding,’ Straight from the Source!

Pinterest has served as a blessing and a curse for us throughout the years. It’s a blessing when it inspires us towards beautiful and realistic decor, dresses, and venue ideas. It’s a curse when it leads to unrealistic expectations and too much inspiration! Pinterest can be so helpful for your wedding when you use it correctly!

Larkin Brown, Pinterest User Researcher & Stylist, weighs in on how to use Pinterest properly to plan your wedding.

SMP: What are some do’s and don’ts when using Pinterest as a bride?

LARKIN: By now it’s no secret millions of brides use Pinterest to find and save ideas for their wedding. With more than four billion wedding-related Pins, there’s endless inspiration to help you plan the wedding you want.

One of the first things to do is simply get started by using Pinterest Search. Unlike other search engines, you don’t have to know exactly what you’re looking for to start getting ideas. The most common wedding searches to get started are for “wedding dresses,” “wedding colors” and “wedding decorations.” As you search, do use Search Guides to help narrow your results. For example, if you search “wedding invitations,” you’ll see guides pop up like “DIY,” “elegant,” “rustic” and more–tap them to see more specific ideas.

You don’t have to create dozens of boards for your wedding. Instead, keep all your ideas organized by creating one board with sections for everything from flowers to favors. Do get your groom involved by sending him Pins using Pinterest Messages or our integration with Facebook Messenger. If you don’t want too many cooks in the proverbial kitchen, turn your board to “secret” to keep it hidden from others.

Lastly, once the big day is over, do archive your board. Archiving is one of my favorite new features because it doesn’t delete your Pins (so you can still relive those ideas!), it moves your board to the bottom of your profile to keep your account more organized. And it means you won’t get wedding content recommended to you anymore, you’ll probably be ready for a break.

SMP: I know some brides have found it difficult to bring their vision to life. What’s the best way to use Pinterest when you’re actually wedding planning?

LARKIN: The best thing to do is share your wedding board with your planner and/or vendors (you can even invite them to collaborate and save ideas to your board). If you’re going completely DIY, which many brides are these days, you can share it with select friends and family so they can see your vision and help you bring it to life. Also, when you find a Pin you want to incorporate into your wedding, you can check out photos and tips right on the Pin from other brides who’ve tried it at their wedding. This will help you get a sense of how easy or difficult an idea is to pull off in real life.

Finally, there is tons of inspiration to find in real life, and our Lens camera search tool can help you find related ideas on Pinterest. If you’re out and see a flower you think would make the perfect arrangement, or a dress color you’d love to see your bridesmaids in, you can snap a photo and use it to search on Pinterest. And, if you’re registered at Target, you can even use the power of Pinterest Lens in the registry app to take photos of products you like and find related ones you can register for at Target.

SMP: What methods can brides use to find balance as they bring their dream wedding to life?

LARKIN: I encourage brides not to get too caught up in what they think their wedding should look like, or what other brides are doing. Your wedding day is immensely personal and should be a reflection of you and your partner, and not just a showcase of every hot bridal trend. Personally, when a detail came up that I wasn’t particularly excited to orchestrate, I just cut it.

Welcome bags, programs, matching bridal party outfits, I just said no to them, which kept me sane and I didn’t hear any complaints from my guests. You may have heard that the best way to guarantee your guests having a good time is for the couple to be enjoying themselves, and it’s absolutely true.

SMP: Is it beneficial for a bride to bring her Pinterest board to her wedding dress appointments?

LARKIN: Definitely! And not just for dress appointments either–show your Pins to your florist, your hairstylist, your wedding coordinator–anyone helping you bring your wedding to life. Your board is like a digital vision board, so it will help your vendors and stylists understand your taste and bring you dresses, flowers, and other things that match your personal style.

Just keep in mind, you may not know what you like until you see it on you! My wedding dress board had a major shift after my first dress shopping trip. But that’s part of what’s fun, learning your taste and style around something you’ve likely never shopped for before! And Pinterest was right there for me with a whole new set of ideas as my vision evolved.

Pinterest has revolutionized the way we plan weddings today. When used properly, it’s an excellent tool that will bring your wedding vision to life.

From Dana Fernandez PhotographyAmanda and Anthony were married the Saturday following Thanksgiving, surrounded by their closest family and friends at the gorgeous and historic The Corinthian in Houston, Texas. From the second you meet them, you instantly know that their relationships with the people closest to them are the most important! So naturally, when Amanda was deciding on decor items, one of her biggest must-haves was lighting that created an intimate ambiance. She felt the best way to achieve this was through candelabras, natural candlelight, and hanging chandeliers. In addition to the lighting, using crimson as an accent to the neutral and blush color palette helped to tie in the colors of the season, and Belle of the Ball alongside the Blooming Gallery did an excellent job bringing all of that together! We absolutely loved everything from from start to finish and couldn’t have asked for a better couple and team of amazing vendors to work with!

Dare to Go Bare With This Modern + Neutral Inspiration

Working with classic wedding blooms like stephanotis and gardenias, Hart Floral Design transformed traditional bridal inspiration into all out modern romance. A neutral color palette infused with the palest pastels is paired with layers upon layers of gorgeous texture and modern details like lucite chairs. From the linens, to the invitations by Jenny Sanders, to that stunning gown by Claire La Faye, not a surface is left un-embroidered or adorned. Get inspired to put a modern romantic spin on your wedding day with all the pretty imagery captured by Maria Lamb.

From Hart Floral… After digging deep into an old Martha Stewart Weddings book from the 90’s I fell in love with her use of a classic bridal flowers stephanotis and gardenias. I wanted to combine old school floristry techniques of hand wiring with a more modern approach. This shoot is really about redefining what modern can look like and combing luxurious elements like Vietri Plates, La Tavola embroidered linens and full elegant flowers. We focused mostly on layering textures together of white, creams and beiges to really over emphasize and exaggerate the bridal moment.

Vineyard

From Sylvie Gil… Christina and Billy’s wedding was a lovely cloudy-day wedding on a beautiful St. Helena vineyard. Pale peonies, dogwoods, and dahlias studded with moody carmine-colored ranunculus made up the floral decor. Blue accents popped up everywhere, from the invitation suite lining, to the bride’s flats, the Maid of Honor’s gown, and the reception table candlesticks, napkins, and stemware. The ceremony was held under a gorgeous, wisteria-laden arbor, and the reception was held on the lawns overlooking the vineyard. Given the recent rain, the couple took the opportunity to create a fun photo-booth setting in the vineyard complete with a flower-decorated tractor and Wellingtons for the guests.

Fast forward a few years and many memories, and they finally tied-the-knot at a wedding in their hometown so timeless and elegant, even Meghan Markle will be hard-pressed to match it. With an experienced team of pros behind the event including Details Details, Hollyflora, Aaron Novak Films, The Grovers, and many others, it’s no wonder – this classic wedding is practically perfect in every way!

Interesting facts about the couple?

We studied abroad together in college in Florence, Italy. We were so captivated by the city… the art, culture, and the food (of course)! It was such a special and romantic time for us that we decided to go back for our honeymoon. In college, we placed a lock on the Ponte Vecchio together — a historical tradition in Florence. When we went back on our honeymoon, we attached a new lock on the bridge!

How and when did you meet?

Collin and I met in our first class on our first day of high school. He was moved next to me in the front row after being a little too chatty in the back of the classroom! He sat next to me for the remainder of that class. We ended up having three classes together that year, which started a strong friendship between the two of us. That friendship set the stage for when we started dating later in high school. We have been best friends ever since.

What did you envision your wedding being like prior to planning?

We knew we wanted to have our wedding and our reception in the city we both grew up in — Irvine, California. We have so many favorite places, friends, and memories, and we wanted to share those with our out-of-town friends and new extended family. We also loved the fact that it was the city where we met. We wanted a reception location that was outdoors and not too far from the beach! We decided on Shady Canyon Golf Club. The location has a beautiful view of the surrounding hillside.

We also knew we wanted to be married by a pastor in our church, as our faith is important to us. In terms of style and design, we knew we wanted a look that was natural, simplistic, and timeless. The planning process we used allowed us to easily hone in on the details we wanted for our big day.

It also was important to us that our day be filled with joy and that we have all our favorite people around us. We wanted our guests to have a great time! We had people coming to attend the festivities from over five states across the country.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

Our colors were ivory, gold, and blush. We also incorporated some green into the color palette since our reception was set outside in the hills behind Newport Beach. We wanted our color palette to be timeless and to also complement the beautiful natural landscape.

What unique elements or special touches did you include throughout the day?

A few highlights:

  • I gave each of my bridesmaids a floral robe from Plum Pretty Sugar to wear during our hair and makeup session.
  • We had signature cocktail napkins at the wedding with our monogram.
  • We both love coffee, so we had a coffee and a chocolate bar! The chocolates were from See’s Candy – an Evertz family favorite!
  • We ended the evening with a California favorite — In-N-Out Burger.
  • My dad surprised me with the most incredible father of the bride speech! He incorporated moments from my childhood into the speech. It was so incredibly special. Later in the evening, we did a fun father-daughter dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” “The Cupid Shuffle,” and MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This.”

Any signature cocktails, or unique food items served?

Our signature cocktail was a Texas margarita! Though we are from California, we live in Texas now, so we brought a bit of that home with us for the wedding. The margaritas had extra lime, spice, and a hint of orange. They were a huge hit!

What was the overall theme and style of the wedding?

Our three words for the day were classic, elegant, and simple, and we referenced these three words whenever making a design decision. We stuck with natural colors that highlighted and complemented the surrounding environment. We focused mostly on ivory with hints of blush in the florals. I find so much elegance in simplicity, so we focused on a timeless, natural look for the wedding! One of my favorite things we incorporated were the chandeliers above the dance floor. They made the space feel intimate while still complementing the surrounding nature.

What is your fondest wedding moment?

Bride: My fondest wedding moment was seeing Collin’s face when I walked down the aisle! It was truly so special to see him and to share that brief moment of excitement as we officially started our lives together.

Groom: My favorite moment from our wedding was walking down the aisle together, married. It felt so good to finally be husband and wife.

Tell us about your vows, your gown, your favors, your cake etc.

We chose to say traditional vows during our ceremony at the church. It was important to us that we said those vows to each other while at the altar, while all of our family and friends stood witness. We exchanged private vows in a note to each other right before we walked down the aisle. Now we have those notes to cherish forever!

What is your advice to brides currently planning a wedding?

First, it’s okay if you don’t know everything in advance! I had a general sense of things I wanted and liked, but I definitely learned along the way when it came to all of the details — flowers, linens, rentals, and overall design. Jeannie and Sarah at Details Details were amazing in helping my dream come to life!

Second, take it step by step. The planning process can be overwhelming, but when you take it one step at a time, it is so much more enjoyable to see your vision come together. Tackle the big things first based on priority — date, venue, music, photographer — and the other things will fall into place.

Lastly, and arguably most importantly, remember to be present. Your engagement and your wedding day are filled with so much joy, anticipation, and celebration — soak up as much of it as you can because it goes by in a blink!

Follow Along as One of Our Editors Transforms Her At-Home Office!

Hi loves! In case you missed our Instagram announcement last week, we are participating in the One Room Challenge this spring! I am beyond excited to join in as the featured designer to transform a space in my own home. You may or may not know that most of us here at SMP work from home—so naturally, I chose to give my office a makeover. I’ll be walking you through the entire process over the next six weeks, sprinkling in design tips along the way, sharing all of my sources, behind the scenes and the final reveal on May 9th. But first, I’m going to share my inspiration for the room today. Let’s get started!

My office will be located on our third floor in our finished attic space. As much as it makes me cringe, it’s always fun to see the ugly before shot—take a peek here! I’m SO ready to say goodbye to mustard yellow walls, thick maroon carpeting and an outdated ceiling fan. I knew from the start that this room was a gem for the office I’d been dreaming of, but three years and one baby later and I still haven’t gotten around to finishing it. Sound familiar? I think we all have that space (or three) in our home that we find an excuse to put off!

Fast forward to today and I have zero excuses to put it off any longer and thankfully, the One Room Challenge is lighting a very hot fire under my booty. So, after years of dreaming of what I wanted to do with this space, you could say I was a little all over the place. In order to hone down my vision, here’s what I did:

When brainstorming the design inspiration for a room, start by focusing on two things:

1. The purpose of the room

The purpose of a room is usually pretty straightforward (i.e. a kitchen is for cooking, a bedroom is for sleeping, etc.). But each room may have secondary or tertiary purposes that you need to consider as well. For instance, if you have a never-ending pile of mail and bills that live on your kitchen countertop, it might make sense to incorporate a small builtin desk into your kitchen; a dedicated space where you can stay organized.

2. The feeling you want the room to evoke; the style

Once you establish the room’s purpose, it’s time to layer on the vibe you’re going for. It’s much easier to approach the style aspect when you’ve already determined what you want out of your room.

The Purpose + Vision for My Office

I knew that I wanted this space to function in a few ways. First and foremost, it will be my office. But I also want this room to function for guest visits and incorporate a small play area for our son since we don’t have a dedicated play room. With those three purposes (office, guest room and play room) as a jumping off point, I decided that a light, airy and calming vibe would suit the room best. Think modern coastal. I’ve carried this style throughout most of our home, too, so it only made sense to do the same in this space.

To achieve that calming vibe, I’m going to be incorporating lots of neutrals, loads of texture and layering in subtle black accents with soothing shades of blue in the decor.

I’ve been eyeing the Colette Desk (shown above and below) from Ave Home for quite some time now and after seeing it featured in my dear friend Jacquelyn’s office and Sapphire Diaries‘ office, I knew it would add the perfect amount of charm to my space.

When working with neutrals, to keep your room from feeling bland, incorporate pieces with lots of texture and pattern.

I’ll be giving my space a fresh coat of white paint from Farrow & Ball, so layering in loads of texture will be key in giving the room some personality.

Gone are the days of ugly metal filing cabinets and IN are beautifully styled shelves. I fell in love with this setup above from Studio McGee’s office space, utilizing IKEA shelving (if you can believe it)! In the coming weeks, I’ll share the hack that makes these beauties look like they’re not from IKEA at all, along with some shelf styling tips, too.

I’m thankful to say that I love my job. Like really love it. So much so, that my work allows me to take off my mama hat and escape for a bit—doing something that inspires me on the daily. With that in mind, I want my office to feel like an escape! Villa Palmier in St. Barts is on my travel wish list and I’m using this scene as inspiration. Isn’t it dreamy? It inspired me to include one of Gray Malin‘s stunning prints in the space—I can’t wait to show you which one I chose!

That said, I will also be dedicating a small area of the room for our one year old son as I mentioned above. I’m a firm believer that every room in a home should work for the whole family and that means making sure our little guy feels welcomed in this space as well.

Another beautiful example of a neutral room with just the right amount of texture, pattern and color is Monika Hibbs’ gorgeous dining room. I just love those cane back chairs and I’m considering including them in the seating area I have planned.

That’s it for now. Next week I’ll be diving into the layout and design selections a bit more, so stay tuned!

See Why This Alfresco Wedding is Totally On Trend

Shibori is not just for cool interior spaces. This deep blue fabric is woven throughout the most gorgeous Austin affair captured by Sophie Epton. Combined with blush florals by Clementine Botanical Art, the romantic gardens of The Contemporary Austin and pretty alfresco details all crafted by Bird Dog Wedding, this celebration is both on trend and totally timeless.

From the Bride… The second Jared and I got engaged we knew we wanted to have our wedding celebration as soon as we could. After five years together, we didn’t want to wait any longer than we had to. We got engaged in July 2017 and married on December 2, 2017. In roughly four months we threw together the most incredible evening. We had known since even before the engagement what our dream wedding would be: a small, intimate outdoor winter wedding in Austin.

We starting the search for venues immediately and could not believe our luck that Laguna Gloria was available in December. We snatched up the date as soon as we could! After having read several wedding websites, articles, guides- I was nervous four months would not be enough time to plan everything we hoped for. The gals at Lovely Bride Houston helped me find the perfect dress from Sarah Seven and assured me timeline was no problem!

With all that covered, I knew I needed someone to keep us on track and help with all the coordinating. We live in Houston so having someone local in Austin was essential. I searched for planners and stumbled upon Bird Dog Wedding. The name jumped out at me because Jared and I had a Brittany spaniel who was our best friend. I could not believe the kismet. After one initial conversation Emily grasped our vision and moved on full speed ahead. She was so detail-oriented and well-organized, it seemed so easy to plan everything!

I have heard people say that planning a wedding is one of the most stressful times but I can honestly say I never felt that. Of course there were nerves, but never stress over the details. I knew we were in good hands. Emily has such a great relationship with all the vendors we were using and that made it a breeze. When I asked her about certain vendors: food, photography, music, hair and makeup, furniture rentals- she had an immediate answer for someone she thought would be a perfect fit. I trusted her judgment since we were on the same page with wedding aesthetic.

Pearl Hair + Makeup linked me up with two incredible stylists who made a girl who rarely gets all dolled up feel beautiful and flawless, not overdone. Sophie Epton was Emily’s one and only recommendation for me on photography and I am so lucky she was available. She was absolutely perfect and she and her husband were such a fun addition to the entire day; they made taking pictures fun and not daunting as it can sometimes feel. The pictures captured the vibe beautifully.

We could not have done any of it without such an amazing group of people using their talents to create the dream. We were surrounded by our best friends and family; my brother officiated which added such a special and personal touch to the whole ceremony. My wedding day was more than my husband and I imagined and better than we could have asked for. I would relive it every year if I could!

9 Summer Wedding Drinks + Desserts to Keep Your Guests Cool

A wedding cake is a classic, but definitely not mandatory! On a hot summer’s evening, not everyone is going to want to indulge in a heavy piece of cake! So we’re here to give you four ideas for alternatives that will keep your guests cool, and their sweet tooths satisfied!

Here are nine ideas for summer wedding desserts to bring a little something different to your big day.

Ice cream bar
Let guests choose their own toppings at an ice cream bar. Lay out a few different flavors, as well as different types of candy, sauce, and sprinkles. Guests can go to town and create something they’ll actually enjoy eating! From soft serve to sorbet to gelato, you can really customize this to suit your reception!

Ice cream cake
If you’ve always dreamed of a stunning wedding cake, you can still have one — but consider making it an ice cream cake. Alternatively, ask your baker and caterer to keep your wedding cake chilled in the refrigerator so when it’s time to cut and serve, the cake will be cool but not frozen!

Affogato
Having a coffee bar post-dinner? Raise the (coffee) bar with an affogato treat! Or, offer cold drink options, like blended or iced lattes.

Cheesecake
Cheesecake is a cool, refreshing alternative to a typical wedding cake. Order several small cakes in a variety of flavors and let your guests pick and choose their favorites.

Popsicles
A summer favorite, this is a classic treat that is affordable and comes in a variety of flavors! Ideal for a big, outdoor, wedding, where each guest can grab their own treat still dance the night away! Try matching the colors of the popsicles the rest of your decor for full wedding cohesion.

Meringue
A meringue, by definition, is a dessert made of whipped egg whites and sugar and can take a few different forms. If you’re trying to incorporate an easy, light treat into the dessert table, go for some flavourful macarons! If you want the meringue to have the attention it deserves, go for mini pavlovas, topped with fresh cream and an array of berries!

Fruit Salad
A slightly healthier dessert option, a fruit salad is a classic that is guilt-free and still tasty! You can customize this to suit you and your groom’s favorite fruits and match the color scheme of the wedding as well! Keep the fruit chilled before serving for an added coolness factor after dinner.

Chocolate Mousse
For all your chocolate-obsessed friends and family, individual chocolate mousse cups are going to set your wedding apart from the rest! A thick and creamy treat perfect after a filling meal, chocolate mousse is a classy way to upgrade from a traditional cake, and keep your guests feeling cool on a hot summer night!

Frosé
Jump on the newest trend, frosé (frozen rosé) for an unexpected treat during cocktail hour! Or, go for a touch of childhood whimsy and create a non-alcoholic slushie station!  Probably the best alternative to straight-up ice cream and guests can easily choose their flavors. There is little to no prep work for a slushie and literally, everyone loves them. Everyone.

Event Venue

From Happy Together Films… Last July we had an amazing experience in the US. We were the videographers of Mimi and Colin’s wedding in Gold Lake Event Center.

Mimi and Colin are a very outgoing couple, that were raised in Colorado, travelled all over the world and now live in Europe, in Switzerland.

Their wedding had a vibrant feeling with deep dark reds and yellows, warm tones in a very boho/rustic mood. They love nature and they felt at home in the middle of the mountains.

The scenery was breath taking (and yes, the low oxygen was too)! The mountains were the best backdrop we ever had in a symbolic ceremony.

From the Bride and Groom…

How would you describe your wedding day?
The weekend was a great mix of ambience and style – a mountain wedding near Boulder and traditional Ethiopian wedding in Denver.

How did you meet?
We met on the dance floor of a local club in DC. Mimi went to see a friend DJ and found Colin dancing on his own. Both being tall, it was easy to catch each other’s eyes over the crowd on the dance floor. We have been dancing together ever since!

Tell us about the proposal?
A surprise stop at Château de la Roche on the road from Geneva to a quaint, little town near Lyon. Colin suggested a walk by the river and found a cliff to propose to Mimi.

What made you decide to get married where you did?
We both have connections in Colorado, although neither of us have lived there very long. It was nice to find a common place to celebrate with family and friends, with similar scenery to our home in the Swiss Alps.

How was the wedding planning experience?
There was so much to plan from a distance, living in Geneva didn’t help. We had over a year to plan, but were constantly feeling busy. With a few personal trips to Colorado, it worked out well. We also had a wedding planner for the first wedding and Mimi’s family help with the second wedding.

Where did you find inspiration for your wedding style?
Pinterest and friends with similar taste in colors and whimsical vibes

Who was your dress by and what did you love about it?
Pronovias. It was a fairy tale dress that went well with the natural ambience of the mountains.

Any DIY details?
We love hot sauce and found a great recipe but got some help with making all 200 bottles.

What were your special moments or highlights of the day?
Spending two nights in cabins, kayaking and hanging out on the lake with our friends, reading our own vows, the rain pouring when we were getting ready but stopping when the ceremony started, Mimi walking down the aisle with her dad.

What advice would you give any other couples about planning their big day, or any tips for the day itself?
Enjoy the process! The planning pays off when you see it come to life.

How was you experience with the videographers?
When we visited them in Lisbon, they greeted us like old friends even though we had just met. We loved working with Happy Together. They were super nice and easy going. They also had the energy to do both wedding days back-to-back. We hope to see them again soon!

Have a Seat at This Table Set for 80

With an epic, seaside-facing banquet table to seat all 80 of their guests, an after party on the beaches of Milos that lasted until the sun rose the following morning, and this couple’s bohemian chic style, this wedding is one we will never forget. Think Happy Events was behind the helm, and we have Vasilis Kouroupis for capturing the memorable day. Don’t miss any of it, all waiting for you in the Vault!

From Think Happy Events… Taghrid and Paul are an amazing couple coming straight from London. They are both so artistic and different; she is an actor, and he is a composer. They decided to get married on Milos, the island that they visited one summer before and totally loved with its unique landscape, chilled atmosphere, and delicious food. Not too touristy, away from big cities, crowds, and noise – Milos matched all these criteria.

They hosted a pre-wedding beach party at Sarakiniko, a beach situated on the north shore of the island. Waves driven by north winds shaped the greyish-white volcanic rock into amazing shapes, and the area is often compared to a moonscape. The local people refer to the scenic landscape of Sarakiniko as “Lunar”. All guests enjoyed the light blue water of the Mediterranean sea. Inflatable games, big laughs, and ultimate relaxation were had by all. In the afternoon, the family took a photo at the top of the rock and enjoyed sparkling wine before the traditional Greek “meze” dinner.

The wedding took place at the ancient Roman style theater on the island. The groom arrived first with his band in his retro convertible car. He patiently waited for the bride, while the guests with big hats and umbrellas were entertained by the nostalgic songs written by Paul for this special day of his life! Two Spanish directors were responsible for the flow of the ceremony, and yes, the bride came on time. Strong words, slow paces, songs promising eternal love – it was an impressive and emotional ceremony.

The wedding dinner happened on the southern part of Milos. A long and festive table facing the deep blue sea welcomed all 80 guests to taste the famous Greek seafood and enjoy a breathtaking view from the edge. For the decoration, many, many succulents were used to match the natural landscape of Milos. After dinner, the couple broke the custom made piñatas shipped from London as a symbol of joy and good fortune to come. And when the night came, before the wild dancing and party began, the lights of Santorini and Crete where seen from far, far away. The lights were dancing in the open sea, giving their best wishes to the couple. An after party followed at the beach, with salty kisses, bare foot dancing, and night swims for all. The day finally ended with the sun rising and everyone extremely happy, but exhausted, heading back to their small white hotels with the blue painted windows. This big day for Taghrid and Paul is a day to definitely remember…too full, too special, too beautiful!

How To Become a Morning Person Once and For All

If you’ve landed here, I’m going to take a wild guess that you’re not a big fan of sunrises and 6am wake up calls—but you strive to be. I was once there; a repeat offender on the snooze button, an I need my coffee before we talk kind of person… you get the picture. But with a good hard look at my daily routine and a change in my outlook, I’m proud to say morning is my favorite time of day. Take a peek at some of the tips that helped me from the sleep experts below!

From Beth Krietsch for Mattress AdvisorFor most of the night owls out there, mornings are a serious struggle often characterized by hitting snooze on repeat, feeling like you’re in a daze, and having no desire to take on the day. Rising with the sun does have serious perks, but many wonder if they even have it in them to be an early bird.

Why Mornings May Feel Impossible

Deep inside, all of us have something called a circadian rhythm, which is an internal biological clock that determines whether we feel sleepy or awake and regulates a host of other biological functions like hunger, insulin and glucose levels, and cell regeneration.

Generally, circadian rhythms lead people to be most drawn to sleep between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. and 3 p.m. Though this can vary between a morning person, who is more alert in the day’s early hours, and an evening person, who will find mornings difficult but feel super alert during the later hours of the day. While the average person’s circadian rhythm is just longer than 24 hours, the circadian rhythm of a night owl will be a bit longer, and for an early bird, a bit shorter.

Rising with the sun or earlier provides serious paybacks like less stressful days, more free time, and increased productivity. Many night owls long to adopt the early bird lifestyle, but it’s definitely not easy. Here are a few tips for making early rising go a bit more smoothly than you’re used to. You may not ever come to love mornings, but with the right steps, they might just become a bit easier.

TIPS FOR GOING TO BED EARLIER

Becoming a morning person is nearly impossible without going to bed earlier. But for many of the late night people out there, falling asleep at an earlier hour is far easier said than done. If you’re in that boat, some of these steps might help you make earlier bedtimes a reality.

Adjust Your Sleep Time Gradually

Rather than jumping into bed three hours earlier than normal on day one, adjust your bedtime in small increments—about 15-minutes at a time should do the trick. So if you normally go to sleep at midnight, spend a few nights trying to fall asleep at 11:45 p.m., then switch to 11:30 p.m., and so on. Inching your sleep time forward just a few minutes at a time will be far easier on your body than a drastic change, and is far more likely to stick as a habit.

Create a Schedule and Stick to It

Establishing an evening routine is an important step in making a habit of an earlier bedtime. Routines will vary from person to person, but here are a few things to consider:

  • Power down all televisions, phones, and other technology one or two hours before the time you want to fall asleep. Try sticking to this rule each day. We promise it will get easier as time goes on.
  • Relax with a cup of herbal tea. Chamomile is a good, calming variety, as are other types like lavender, kava and peppermint.
  • Take a bath. Add essential oils for extra relaxation.
  • Wash your face and teeth at the same time each night.
  • Dim the lights.
  • Crawl into bed at the same time each night to read, listen to a podcast, journal, or take part in some other activity that’s calming to you.
  • Aim to fall asleep at the same time every day. If you’re really struggling here, melatonin supplements may help, but it’s important to determine the correct dosage and consult with your doctor first.

Remember that all of these aspects of your nighttime routine will be easier if you maintain your bedroom as a clean and uncluttered space designed specifically for relaxation and sleep.

Lose the Tech Before Bedtime

The science is out there—technology keeps us up at night. This happens because many phones, televisions and other devices emit a blue light that disrupts our circadian rhythm and therefore disrupts our sleep. Essentially, the blue light causes our brains to secrete less melatonin, which leaves us feeling awake when we’d normally be tired.

It’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll have a far easier time drifting off to sleep if you stop using technology a few hours before your intended bedtime. This means turning off all bright screens, from phones to televisions and iPads in order to eliminate blue light. Some great ideas for accomplishing this are to set a “no screens in the bedroom” rule or install software that blocks email and specific websites after a set hour.

Minimize Evening Commitments

You don’t need to be a Grinch and say “no” to evening plans altogether, but try not to agree to every evening plan that comes your way. This is especially important to keep in mind when you’re feeling overextended or notice that social commitments are keeping you up too late. Try limiting yourself to one or two evening commitments per week and see if you notice any differences in your ability to get to bed early. This tip can be particularly helpful around the holidays when you tend to run from one social commitment to the next.

Resist Napping Throughout the Day

Short naps tend to be harmless for most, but long naps during the day definitely make it harder to fall asleep at night. Unless you’re extremely overtired, try to nix the naps in favor of a longer and deeper nighttime rest.

Be Careful What You Eat and Drink

Caffeine can stay in your system for six hours or more, so an afternoon coffee might keep you up far later than is desirable. Avoid caffeine after 3 p.m. or so if you’re after an early, uninterrupted rest.

Alcohol is also known to interfere with sleep and might leave you doing far more tossing and turning than sleeping. The effects of beer, wine, and other forms of alcohol are known to reduce REM sleep, which can leave you feeling drowsy and make it difficult to concentrate the next day.

Be careful with your food choices too. For some people, eating too close to bedtime can lead to digestive-related sleep disruptions, while certain food ingredients like sugar or caffeine can also be detrimental to a good night’s rest.

Listen to Your Body

If you’ve decided 10 p.m. is your new bedtime but feel exhausted at 9 p.m., listen to what your body is telling you and head to bed early. There’s no point in powering through when you need rest.

TIPS FOR WAKING UP EARLIER

We know, waking up early is an extreme challenge for night owls. But we promise it’s possible, especially after you’ve mastered your new evening routine. Here are a few tips to focus on in the mornings in order to make 6 a.m. the new 10 a.m.

Stick to a Routine

Just as routine is important for falling asleep earlier in the evening, it’s helpful in rising earlier as well. Here are a few ideas:

  • Wake up at the same time each day. This may feel like struggle city, but consistent wake and sleep times are very important in getting enough rest.
  • Have something you can look forward to upon emerging from your slumber, whether it’s a warm cup of coffee or tea, meditation, or 10 minutes with a captivating read.
  • Consider establishing a morning workout routine. For many, an early workout provides a sense of accomplishment and may even leave you with more energy throughout the day. Try laying out your clothes the evening before if you’re struggling to make morning fitness happen.

Wake Up to Natural Light

Because our circadian rhythms are highly responsive to light and darkness, natural light is crucial in helping us rise with ease. If your living space doesn’t provide any natural light, it may be helpful to buy a lamp that mimics natural light.

Place Your Alarm Somewhere Out of Reach

Keep your alarm across the room so you’re forced out of bed first thing in order to turn it off. Try avoiding the snooze button too. And because no one likes waking to a blaring alarm, try choosing an alarm tone that’s pleasing to you. Maybe something with a calming tone or a song you like. You may find mornings far less irritating with this simple switch.

If you’re up for a challenge, you can also try the Ruggie alarm clock. You actually have to stand up on this mat for a set period of time before the alarm goes off. So hitting snooze while you’re bundled up under covers isn’t an option.

Give Yourself Time to Wake Up

Waking up and rushing straight out the door to work or another commitment is surely not the way to become a morning person. Slowly ease into the day by allowing yourself some peaceful time to sit down with a cup of coffee, eat breakfast, read, watch the news, or do anything else that allows you to slowly and mindfully begin the day rather than diving in head first.

Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Prep ingredients the night before so you’re able to wake up and indulge in a healthy breakfast alongside a warm mug of coffee or tea. The reward will be well worth the effort. And knowing you’ll soon be sitting down to something delicious might just provide the motivation you need to jump right out of bed when your alarm sounds.

Still need some motivation for becoming a morning person?

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Early in the day, you’re likely to be more focused and have higher willpower. This makes mornings a great time to work out, catch up on emails or get some creative projects done.
  2. In this “constantly on” world we live in, mornings are a time of far fewer distractions compared to the rest of the day. Rise earlier for the chance to focus on important projects without the hassle of constant distractions.
  3. Nothing feels better than being ahead of the game. Rise early, check some tasks off your list, and you’ll most likely feel far more accomplished and motivated compared to the days when you get a late start.
5 International Destination Wedding Details You Can’t Forget

Planning a destination wedding is doubly exciting because you and your fiancée are getting ready to share a place that is special to you both with all of your friends and family! However, destination weddings often require some extra planning to account for wedding details that typically don’t exist for local weddings. So give yourself more time to plan and don’t forget these five destination wedding details!

Visa requirements
Melita DeHazes, of cross-border payments provider OFX says, “Lots of countries have relaxed their visa permissions in order to cash in on revenue from destination weddings, but visas are a factor you’ll want to check in every destination you’re considering. Keep in mind that if you’re planning on marrying someone of a different nationality and eventually living in the country where you’re getting married, the requirements may be different than those that usually apply to destination weddings. It’s always wise to contact the consulate, if you’re unsure.”

Marriage license requirements/regulations
You need a marriage license to make your union legal and different countries and US states have different requirements. For example, the cost, waiting period, valid period, and whether or not you need a blood test or documents translated can all vary by country. Just make sure to research the requirements of your destination well in advance and give yourself enough time to plan accordingly.

Adding currency exchange rates to your budget
DeHazes says, “a lot of couples make the mistake of failing to factor in currency exchange rates. Even though these exchange rates change constantly and will likely be different by the time you have to pay your venue and vendors, use an accurate exchange rate calculator to get an estimate of how your money will convert and whether or not the conversion will work in your favor.”

Vetting the venue via real photos on Instagram or Trip Advisor if you can’t see it in person
Sometimes traveling to your destination prior to booking key venues or vendors is impossible and you have to book them sight unseen. If that’s the case, don’t just rely on official pictures from the venue’s or vendor’s website, as those are obviously going to look perfect. Do a little more digging and see if you can find any “real photos” from social media on Instagram or travel sites like Trip Advisor.

Planning activities or giving destination suggestions to your guests
When you’re asking your guests to travel for your wedding, you’re responsible for ensuring they have a great experience the entire time they are there! So beyond just official wedding events, make sure to provide group activities or suggestions of experiences they can do so they have fun ways to spend their time. Giving them an itinerary with an area map in a welcome bag is a nice touch!

A Southern Soiree That Checks Off All Our Boxes

Things we love: high school sweethearts, vintage cars, southern traditions, and couples whose love for each other and for their families is the most memorable part of their special day. Check, check, check, and a big ol’ check — this sweet day planned by Stephanie Shaul Events has it all. So if you need us, we’ll be right here looking at all the pretty captured by Anagram Photo.

From Stephanie of Stephanie Shaul Events… Megan and Evan, the bride and groom, are that couple that every wedding planner dreams of working with — incredibly excited about their wedding day and marriage; so totally in-love; focused on their family, friends, and community that have shaped them; and bursting to have a gorgeous, fresh, stylish wedding day that represents their love story and is filled with thoughtful touches. We worked tirelessly over their year-long engagement to plan and design this stunning, heartfelt wedding at the quintessentially Southern Carolina Inn — a historic inn with sentimental meaning to the couple. We designed a stunning palette of cranberry, cinnamon, rose, greys, a mixture of gold and brass, plenty of rich textures, and organic elements and greenery. There were so many beautiful, cohesive elements and details that we incorporated throughout their wedding to showcase their love story as best as possible.

As a wedding photographer herself, the bride was already deeply immersed in the wedding industry, which made choosing vendors and the design a cinch. We worked with incredible vendors to bring this vision and design to fruition, perfectly and exquisitely captured on film and brought to life through the lens of Graham Terhune. Alexa from Sage Paper Co. designed bespoke wedding invitations with an ombre painting of the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop (a place the bride and groom love and visit often), and Wylde Flowers created the most breathtaking, bold, lush bouquets in the perfect color palette and design. We affixed Megan’s grandmothers’ pins to the bouquet, and it was so special to think of all of these loving, thoughtful touches scattered throughout wedding. The bride’s great-grandfather’s vintage car was adorned with a custom “Just Married!” sign with calligraphy by honorary bridesmaid, Meredith of Oaks and Gray, and it was also decked out with a lush greenery garland. The vintage car was the perfect finishing touch on the wedding day, especially as the couple jubilantly exited their wedding as husband and wife under a joyful sparkler send-off and into the awaiting car.

But above any other details, thoughtful and stunning as they were, what stood out to me the most is Megan and Evan’s inspiring, genuine, deeply rooted love. What matters the most to them: generously loving and celebrating their family, friends, and community and thoughtfully planning for and focusing on their new marriage.

These moments are etched in my memory. Their intimate first look, which was filled with sheer joy, nerves, excitement, and a lot of laughter and happy tears. Their outdoor ceremony, which was set amongst the oak trees, was truly special as they pledged their lives to one another, prayed with their families and wedding party during the ceremony, and recited the most memorable vows. As their wedding planner and friend, it was also a highlight to privately share their reception ballroom with them, and to see our vision come to life so exquisitely was a moment I’ll never forget.

The graciousness and joy of the bride and groom, along with all of their family and friends, was truly memorable and unique, and this wedding simply beautiful and love-filled in every way.

From the bride, Megan Kerns Foote-Hudson… Evan and I met in high school in our hometown, Durham, North Carolina. Shortly thereafter, we started dating and have been inseparable ever since. Last year, we planned a weekend getaway to Evan’s collegetown and one of our most beloved cities, Asheville, North Carolina. On the way to Asheville, Evan’s secret proposal quickly unfolded. After popping the question, Evan and I celebrated our engagement at the historic and renowned Omni Grove Park Inn where we were surrounded by the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains. It was the most perfect and thoughtful weekend — an experience that I’ll cherish forever!

When we started to plan our wedding, we knew we wanted to incorporate intentional details that represented our personalities, love story, and family legacies. The first big decision we made was our venue. The Carolina Inn has always been a special place for both our families, so after officially touring the space, we knew it was the perfect setting to start our new chapter. We both adore the intimate southern charm and hospitality they provide to all of their guests. In fact, we can’t wait to celebrate many anniversaries at the Carolina Inn in years to come!

Leading up to our wedding day, Evan and I were elated to see our family and closest friends gather under the same roof. It was incredibly humbling to celebrate and dance the night away with our families and friends who traveled near and far to celebrate our new beginning. To kick off the wedding weekend, Evan’s parents hosted our rehearsal dinner at a local restaurant in Chapel Hill. Saturday, Evan arranged a groomsmen’s brunch (one of our favorite meals), and I organized a yoga class for my bridesmaids at the Inn.

As we look back on our day, a few moments left a lasting impression on us. My first look with my bridesmaids was one of my favorite moments. Early on I decided I wanted to keep my dress a secret. Until our wedding day, my mom and two sisters were the only people who had seen my dress. Seeing the reaction on my bridesmaids’ faces was priceless — a heartfelt memory that will remain near and dear to my heart. Also, Evan and I cherished our first look, an intimate moment that gave us a chance to truly embrace our emotions and excitement for the day and each other. Above all, our favorite part of the day was the ceremony. We intentionally created a ceremony that represented our story while encompassing our values and deepest promises to one another. Our ceremony took place outside under a full-bodied oak tree with vibrant and radiant fall foliage. Thanks to our faith in the southern tradition of burying the bourbon, we were able to keep our ceremony under the warm sun and clear Carolina blue skies. Thank you, precious bottle of Woodford Reserve!

After a delicious southern meal, drinks, and dancing, we ended the night under a sparkler exit. My dad drove our epic getaway car, my great-grandfather’s Ford Model A from 1927.

Evan and I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding day. We are so grateful for our families, friends, and vendors who were able to bring our vision to life.

5 Things To Do in the First Month of Baby’s Life

The first month of baby’s life is filled with a plethora of emotions. You want time to stand still so you can soak in every sweet smile and coo—but at the same time, you also look forward to the months ahead of watching your little one grow, roll, crawl, walk and talk (and longer stretches of sleep!). It’s truly a special time that goes by in the blink of an eye. Here are a few things that we did in the first month of our babe’s life that I’m so happy I did with my own little one.

Newborn Session

Booking a newborn session isn’t something you can necessarily plan on with an unknown arrival date, but it’s always a good idea to get in touch with a photographer well in advance and aim for a 2-3 week window around your due date. Make sure to capture that sweet bundle in the first few weeks. You’ll want to remember these moments!

Get Out

One thing I’m so glad my husband and I did in the first month of our baby’s life, was to simply get out. It kept us feeling human and actually gave us a bit of energy on the tough days. It may seem super intimidating to bring your little one out into the big world—but as long as you’ve got a stocked diaper bag, it’s easy peasy. Make sure to feed and change you bub before you head out the door!

Balance Family Time + Visitor Time

Easier said than done, I know! Everyone is going to be super excited to meet your little one, but make sure to give yourself enough alone time as a family in that first month. This goes for those few days you’re in the hospital, too! Becoming a parent (even a second or third time around) can be overwhelming as you get to know your new baby. There’s often a lot of pressure to allow visitors into your hospital room or home right away, but those visits may come with advice (sometimes unwanted), lots of pass-the-baby and excitement, all of which can be quite draining on your already depleted energy levels. Know that it’s OK to want to be alone! My husband and I only requested immediate family to come visit and for short periods of time. And when we got home, we kept our visits very minimal those first couple of weeks. It was such a nice time to fully soak in our newest family member and get to know him.

Write Your Baby a Letter

As I mentioned in my intro, that first month is alll the feels. It’s the perfect time to write a letter to your baby and tuck it away for them to read when they’re older.

Write Out Your Birth Story

There will be things you want to remember about childbirth and things you tuck in the corner of your brain and try to forget! But I promise, the good moments trump the bad. Writing out a birth story is such a wonderful way to release all of those sporadic feelings you have in that first month—it’s almost therapeutic. I’m so glad I wrote down every tiny little detail of mine and to this day, reading it brings me back instantly.

A Hilltop Wedding Inspired by The Couple’s European Honeymoon

Italy, Spain and France all played a starring role in this Malibu celebration captured by Joel Serrato. After planning a dream honeymoon to these very spots, the Bride and Groom utilized their travel plans as inspiration for their wedding day. The result is an elegant alfresco affair with effortless European flair designed by Sarah Park Events, along with florals by Oak and the Owl and rose quartz hued stationery by Kelsey Malie Calligraphy. See the full day right here plus a film by Cloudless Weddings below.

From the bride….Eric and I met as seniors in high school at an accepted students’ preview weekend at UCLA. As a San Francisco native, I never imagined that I would meet the love of my life in Southern California that fateful weekend. We danced the night away at a social organized for the prospective students and exchanged numbers the next day. We became best friends and before departing for college (Eric ultimately attended UCLA while I studied in the Bay Area), Eric asked me to be his girlfriend in San Francisco on August 08, 2009. A little over six years later and many flights travelled back and forth between Northern and Southern California, Eric asked me to be his wife with a very romantic proposal at the campus where we met on December 12, 2015.

We searched for our reception venue first, considering various locations across California. As soon as we visited Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyards, we knew we had found the perfect place for us. The Tuscan inspired hilltop villa captivated us with its stunning architecture, beautiful infinity pool and impressive helicopter pad, among other features. With its 360-degree views of the surrounding vineyards and impressive mountains, MRO felt like heaven on earth. Eric immediately agreed that the mansion from “The Hangover 3” film was “the one.” Once we had our reception venue, we searched for the perfect Church to have our Catholic ceremony. Mission San Fernando Rey de España enchanted us with its rich history and Spanish architecture. From the large courtyard to the ornate altar inside the Church, we felt lucky to be married in the historic 17th California Mission.

Eric and I decided to get married on August 07, 2016, the day before our 7th Year Anniversary. Inspired by our upcoming honeymoon to France, Spain and Italy, we chose most elements of our wedding (cuisine, florals, paper goods, etc.) with the effortless European lifestyle in mind. We knew we wanted to have an intimate and romantic celebration. To bring our vision to life, we formed a fantastic team of wedding professionals with great love and dedication.

Our vendors were not only incredibly talented, but also kind and sweet. It was a dream come true to be photographed by the amazing Joel Serrato, whom we connected with instantly. On our wedding day, we felt like Joel and his wonderful assistant Patrick Quezada were family. Sarah Park of Sarah Park Events and Design was the greatest help during the wedding planning process. Sarah was the Stylist and Designer of the wedding, working closely with us and our vendors to execute every detail to perfection. Nancy Teasley of Oak and the Owl Event and Floral Design Studio surpassed my wildest expectations with her organically romantic and lush arrangements in colors of white, creams and rose quartz. She used the most stunning flowers from her farm, Ella Rose Farm. Kelsey Carpenter of Kelsey Malie Calligraphy created soft and romantic invitations, programs, menus, and all other paper goods on the most beautiful handmade Spanish paper, Arpa. It was a true honor to have an opportunity to work with creatives such as Joel, Sarah, Nancy and Kelsey.

Catering company Urban Palate helped us create the most delicious and beautiful menu, from the first hors d’oeuvre to the final late night snack. When we discussed my love for avocados at our first tasting, Urban Palate surprised me by adding fresh avocado slices to our already mouthwatering salad. Those little details are the ones we will never forget. Janet Villa did my hair and makeup for the engagement session and on the day of the wedding, and was an absolute pleasure to work with! Classic Event and Tent Rentals, Found Vintage Rentals and La Tavola Fine Linen Rental worked with us to ensure that we had all the necessary and gorgeous rentals we desired. Casa de Perrin helped us curate the most stunning tabletops. Every item was carefully selected thanks to the Casa team and Sarah. Cindy Lee of SweetLee Made created the most perfect four tier fondant cake with olive branches by Nancy and styling by Sarah. Décor Events Services took care of lighting and displayed our monogram on the center of the dance floor. Diego Hellewell with VOX DJs had all our guests dancing until the end of the night with the most fun music and entertainment. Fortunately, Ryan Davis of Cloudless Weddings was there to film our entire day with his awesome assistant, Daly Ol, and their drone camera! Berlanti Azhak with The Elegant Ninja planned and coordinated with these and other wonderful vendors.

Planning and executing a wedding takes a village, but when that village is comprised of the best and most thoughtful set of experts, the process is an exciting one and the results are incredible. Eric and I feel very fortunate to have married one another in front of our closest family and friends. We will never forget our first dance on the helicopter pad as our guests watched from above or the late summer breeze we felt as we dined al fresco. We have so many moments on our special day to be grateful for and so many wonderful family, friends and vendors to thank for making August 07, 2016 the best day of our lives so far!

Blogger Bride Erin’s Wedding Budget Splurges + Saves

Hi guys! It’s Erin from @StyleByThePeople! Now that my wedding planning is in full swing, I have some seriously exciting posts on the way for you all. If you follow my blog, you’ll probably notice that I frequently mix high and low pieces to create the perfect look – I’m a huge believer that sometimes the best outfits come from these combinations. That said, when it came to planning my wedding, I kept this in mind, splurging on certain facets and saving on some. I really believe that this handpicked mix of vendors will make my wedding a true representation of me.

Today, I’m going to share the things we’re saving on and the things we’re splurging on. I hope my insight helps some of you with your decision making when it comes to your big day!

What’s most important to us in our budget:

VENUE

A wedding’s venue is probably the most important part of a wedding. That said, Matt and I thought long and hard about where we wanted our big day to take place. The venue we chose felt different than our normal environment. It was far enough away that it felt like a vacation, but it was close enough to LA that our friends and family would have no trouble getting there. It’s beautiful, relaxing, and there’s so much to do on the property, which is exactly what we wanted for everyone attending.

A WEDDING PLANNER
I am the first to admit that I am not the most organized person, so when I started the wedding planning process, I knew I was going to need help! Kristin Banta not only planned my brother and sisters’ weddings, but she is a legit creative genius. I love that we share a similar aesthetic and can work together to bring my vision for this day to life. I totally trust her, and know she’s going to make my wedding day perfect.

DJ
A wedding DJ really sets the tone for the evening, so this aspect of the wedding was very important to Matt and I. We not only did a ton of research, but we also reached out to friends and family to see if they had any specific DJs to recommend. We recently found a DJ we loved and although he was a bit higher priced than others we spoke with, we knew he’d be the perfect person to make the evening a blast for everyone.

What we’re saving on:

DRESS
I actually found my dress on accident, which is really funny because as a fashion blogger, most people thought I would have had this lined up wayyy ahead of time. Once Matt and I got engaged, I was browsing Pinterest and saw a dress by an Israeli designer. I instantly fell in love with the intricate details, the timeless silhouette – everything.

I never imagined myself in a wedding dress, but when I saw this one, I could totally see myself wearing it. Coincidentally, she had an upcoming trunk show in LA, so I hightailed it over there and found my dress. Oh, and because it was a trunk show, I got it for 15% off (yay!).

PHOTOGRAPHY
This wasn’t intentional, but when it came to finding a photographer, I found that I gravitated towards smaller photographers. Matt and I wanted something that felt more natural and “us.” I am not only happy that the photographer we went with is incredibly talented, but she’s also in our budget, too.

INVITES
While I love an invite that stands out apart from the rest, I knew that I could get the design I wanted for a price that wasn’t unattainable. That said, when I was browsing invites, I chose a design that not only represented Matt and I, but that also didn’t break the bank. I highly recommend browsing Pinterest, Etsy, and Instagram for less expensive invite designers who can really bring your vision to life.

I’m so happy I get to share all of this with you guys. I’ll be back next month with another post about my wedding process, so stay tuned. In the meantime, follow me on Instagram @StyleByThePeople for more!

Colorful Balloons, Dancing + Endless Love: This Is The Best!

How amazing, fun and fabulous is this wedding!? I’m at a loss for words to describe the joy that radiates from Cynthia Chung’s photos of this NYC celebration. Two families came together when Jess and Arc said “I do” and the result? Dancing, super personalized details, and endless amounts of love and laughter… evident in every one of these pics in our gallery! Dive in right this way!

From Cynthia Chung PhotographyEverything about this wedding was amazing! I loved how the families of both the bride and groom – two completely different cultures – were able to fuse together and throw one hell of a dance party! Jess and Arc are two people that love having a great time and bringing their communities together and it was SO very apparent throughout the entire wedding! Dance seemed to be a very special bond between the two, and my highlights of the day was when they spent some time dancing to the music of a street acapella group in the West Village, and when Arc (the groom)’s mother decided to initiate Jess into the ‘family’ with their special family traditional dance… It was AWESOME to see. Everyone had a great time that night, old and young!!

From the Bride… We wanted somewhere convenient where our family and friends could all gather to celebrate the journey the two of us have been on and were willing to commit to for the rest of our lives. After dating for seven years, we weren’t looking to make a huge fuss and didn’t really have much of a vision, which quickly led us to selecting a restaurant as a location. We had also been to over 12 weddings in 2016 and knew we wanted to personalize everything as much as possible as it wouldn’t be so “Insert Bride + Groom here”. From our hand-drawn portraits to the Brazilian bom boms (my favorite dessert) – we tried to infuse the wedding with “us”. I think the most sentimental thing about the whole day was the people who were there to share in our memory with us… And of course the groom :) Everything else could easily have been replaced or removed and I would have been equally as happy!

What Happens When You Get a Wedding Planning Do Over? This.

We’ve said it time and time again – your wedding should be a reflection of you and your beloved as a couple, not checking off any boxes or fitting someone else’s mold. This couple figured that out, too. After completely planning a traditional wedding in their town, they felt like it just wasn’t right for them, and they started over…FROM SCRATCH! Their new Marfa location meant a change in style, a new date, and different but amazing vendors like Bubbles Event Planning + Rentals, Gage Weddings, and Melanie Julian Photography. And you can see it from the smiles on their faces and those around them – THIS turned out to be the perfect wedding for them.

With a traditional wedding at First Presbyterian Church and Petroleum Club in Midland, Texas all planned to the nines, Abby and Paul just felt something wasn’t right for their special day. They’ve always loved visiting Marfa on the weekends, and after having their engagement pictures taken there, they decided it was the place they should tie the knot, too! They moved their wedding up a whole month and had to start over from scratch, finding all new vendors (that were local and available for the new date).

Their day was a full mix of traditional and modern. Her classic high neckline dress by Sareh Nouri (that had a detachable train!) paired with her simple sapphire earrings (a gift from Paul) was completed with her Manolo Blahnik shoes. Paul and his groomsmen were wearing timeless black tuxes with the traditional bowtie mixed with black boots to bring in the Texas flair. Abby’s modern bouquet had the cutest cactus in it with long silk ribbon, and their rose gold invitations matched the bridesmaids’ dresses and her rose gold wedding band (their rings are all three of the metals – yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold).

It was a large family affair, with all of their siblings and step siblings included in the wedding (her brothers = ushers in white jackets; her four step sisters = house party; his sister = bridesmaid; his brother = best man). Abby rented the coolest Airbnb for her and her 15 girls (9 bridesmaids and 6 house party goers) to get ready in. Every room had its own story to tell, which paired perfectly with the color palette of Abby’s day, also bringing in more of the modern touch.

Paul met Abby at the Airbnb for the sweetest first look. He was so excited to see her! Once he saw here, he couldn’t stop telling her how beautiful she was. The day continued as we traveled around Marfa in the beautiful sunshine taking photos of the couple. Abby was truly the easiest bride, up for whatever. She and Paul were just so happy to be together and to finally be getting married!

Their wedding party of 34 met us at the beautiful Marfa National Bank where we were magically able to fit everyone into one frame! There was lots of laughter all day, as everyone was just so excited to be a part of their day! Once we finished with wedding party pictures, we walked two blocks to First Christian Church where we completed all family photos prior to the ceremony. Their ceremony was lead by Pastor Steve Schorr, whom is the senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Midland, where Abby grew up attending church. Abby’s grandfather also sang a beautiful hymn during the service.

Since all photos were completed prior to the ceremony, Abby and Paul headed straight for cocktail hour upon sealing the deal with a kiss with a mariachi band leading their guests. The remainder of the night was filled with hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, live music, and lots of dancing! They had rented out the entire hotel (Hotel Paisano), so guests were able to just walk right upstairs to end the night.

Get a Taste of the Magic of Morocco With This Backyard Bash

Inspired by the rich colors and textures of Morocco, Kat Tanita of With Love From Kat dreamed up the ultimate backyard bash for her sister’s engagement. This bohemian soiree designed by Layne Kula comes filled with poufs, floral ice infused cocktails and a seriously gorgeous food spread. If you have Morocco on your travel list, get a little taste of the magic through the lens of Jessica Alexander.

For her sister’s recent engagement, fashion and lifestyle blogger Kat Tanita wanted to throw her sister a moroccan inspired soiree for her closest family and friends. On a gorgeous spring day in Venice Beach, California, the With Love From Kat team designed and produced an epically curated, bohemian party that was as gorgeous as could be.

Inspired by the rich textures and patterns of morocco, Kat’s vision was born from her love of vibrant colors and bold, rich florals. we sourced specialty lanterns and metallic accents, layered vintage rugs and moroccan poufs, and gathered copious amounts of varying citrus to make a statement.

Fresh florals like ranunculus, dahlias, two-toned roses, peonies, and strawflowers were gathered in vintage julep cups for a pop of silver. Bold, patterned china was accented with marigold linens and brass flatware bundled together with leather twine for an earthy look.

Patterned glassware, statement peacock chairs, and a fully-stocked bar cart with floral ice and ingredients for fresh, specialty cocktails gave guests plenty to talk about.

And who could forget the food? Catering whipped up an amazing mediterranean-inspired menu featuring an array of fresh salads, overflowing platters of charcuterie and crudite, and a delicious blood orange cornmeal cake.
