Interesting facts about the couple?

We studied abroad together in college in Florence, Italy. We were so captivated by the city… the art, culture, and the food (of course)! It was such a special and romantic time for us that we decided to go back for our honeymoon. In college, we placed a lock on the Ponte Vecchio together — a historical tradition in Florence. When we went back on our honeymoon, we attached a new lock on the bridge!

How and when did you meet?

Collin and I met in our first class on our first day of high school. He was moved next to me in the front row after being a little too chatty in the back of the classroom! He sat next to me for the remainder of that class. We ended up having three classes together that year, which started a strong friendship between the two of us. That friendship set the stage for when we started dating later in high school. We have been best friends ever since.

What did you envision your wedding being like prior to planning?

We knew we wanted to have our wedding and our reception in the city we both grew up in — Irvine, California. We have so many favorite places, friends, and memories, and we wanted to share those with our out-of-town friends and new extended family. We also loved the fact that it was the city where we met. We wanted a reception location that was outdoors and not too far from the beach! We decided on Shady Canyon Golf Club. The location has a beautiful view of the surrounding hillside.

We also knew we wanted to be married by a pastor in our church, as our faith is important to us. In terms of style and design, we knew we wanted a look that was natural, simplistic, and timeless. The planning process we used allowed us to easily hone in on the details we wanted for our big day.

It also was important to us that our day be filled with joy and that we have all our favorite people around us. We wanted our guests to have a great time! We had people coming to attend the festivities from over five states across the country.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

Our colors were ivory, gold, and blush. We also incorporated some green into the color palette since our reception was set outside in the hills behind Newport Beach. We wanted our color palette to be timeless and to also complement the beautiful natural landscape.

What unique elements or special touches did you include throughout the day?

A few highlights:

  • I gave each of my bridesmaids a floral robe from Plum Pretty Sugar to wear during our hair and makeup session.

  • We had signature cocktail napkins at the wedding with our monogram.

  • We both love coffee, so we had a coffee and a chocolate bar! The chocolates were from See’s Candy – an Evertz family favorite!

  • We ended the evening with a California favorite — In-N-Out Burger.

  • My dad surprised me with the most incredible father of the bride speech! He incorporated moments from my childhood into the speech. It was so incredibly special. Later in the evening, we did a fun father-daughter dance to Michael Jackson’s "Thriller," "The Cupid Shuffle," and MC Hammer’s "Can’t Touch This."

Any signature cocktails, or unique food items served?

Our signature cocktail was a Texas margarita! Though we are from California, we live in Texas now, so we brought a bit of that home with us for the wedding. The margaritas had extra lime, spice, and a hint of orange. They were a huge hit!

What was the overall theme and style of the wedding?

Our three words for the day were classic, elegant, and simple, and we referenced these three words whenever making a design decision. We stuck with natural colors that highlighted and complemented the surrounding environment. We focused mostly on ivory with hints of blush in the florals. I find so much elegance in simplicity, so we focused on a timeless, natural look for the wedding! One of my favorite things we incorporated were the chandeliers above the dance floor. They made the space feel intimate while still complementing the surrounding nature.

What is your fondest wedding moment?

Bride: My fondest wedding moment was seeing Collin’s face when I walked down the aisle! It was truly so special to see him and to share that brief moment of excitement as we officially started our lives together.

Groom: My favorite moment from our wedding was walking down the aisle together, married. It felt so good to finally be husband and wife.

Tell us about your vows, your gown, your favors, your cake etc.

We chose to say traditional vows during our ceremony at the church. It was important to us that we said those vows to each other while at the altar, while all of our family and friends stood witness. We exchanged private vows in a note to each other right before we walked down the aisle. Now we have those notes to cherish forever!

What is your advice to brides currently planning a wedding?

First, it’s okay if you don’t know everything in advance! I had a general sense of things I wanted and liked, but I definitely learned along the way when it came to all of the details — flowers, linens, rentals, and overall design. Jeannie and Sarah at Details Details were amazing in helping my dream come to life!

Second, take it step by step. The planning process can be overwhelming, but when you take it one step at a time, it is so much more enjoyable to see your vision come together. Tackle the big things first based on priority — date, venue, music, photographer — and the other things will fall into place.

Lastly, and arguably most importantly, remember to be present. Your engagement and your wedding day are filled with so much joy, anticipation, and celebration — soak up as much of it as you can because it goes by in a blink!
