A Miami Backyard that Begs for Margaritas and Chill

School’s almost out, the sun is shining bright and the margs are full, cold and with a hearty dose of salt – if only I had a backyard that looks like Amanda’s over at Fashionable Hostess! Seeing that she probably wouldn’t love it if I pitched a tent, I’m doing the next best thing and diving deep into all of the pretty pics captured by Simply Lively and the amazing inspiration that she sent our way. Her insta feed is pretty gorgeous too if you love chic, totally approachable style. Read on and you can see the full gallery here!

From Amanda … Welcome to our little piece of Miami paradise. I’m Amanda and I am the creator and founder of Fashionable Hostess and I’m so excited to share our little slice of heaven with you today!

I love to share photos of our backyard as we are lucky to live in Miami where it’s essentially summer year round, thus having a fabulous outdoor space is as important as having a great family room space. It’s where we hang with friends, play with our kids, and often eat lunch as a family.

A bit about the outdoor space… We have two different seating areas, the covered patio space and the poolside space. The covered patio (above) is meant to feel like a family room.; a big comfy couch and chairs (in outdoor fabrics but comfortable and beautiful enough to go indoors!), coffee tables to display foods and drinks, and a dining space for lunch with the kids or dinner with friends.

Then closer to the pool we needed seating in quick dry materials for rainy days or wet tushes! I love the “cushioned but quick dry” mix of these outdoor pieces.

Once again though, to dress up the couches, I added bright colored pillows – again outdoor fabrics but pretty enough to go indoors. I will even tell you that I leave all my pillows out in the Miami sun and rain and they are fine!

Although before parties and get togethers, I usually remove the covers and toss them in the wash so they look their best, I do think that investing in high quality pieces is worth the splurge and will go a long way in keeping them always looking good.

Because it can get so hot (and Dane is just a baby!), it was important to have some big umbrellas for shade. I just love the striped Frontgate umbrellas because they give the space that Italian riviera feel.

My mission in writing Fashionable Hostess is to inspire everyone to live their most beautiful life, whether it’s decorating their dream home or throwing the best dinner parties, and through my website and instagram {@fashionablehostess} I show a daily peak into my own life, all the while balancing running a business and being a mom of three under 5! Come join me!

Vintage Styled Wedding Inspired by Family

From the Bride… Family is the most important thing to us; having our wedding reception at the same venue where my parents were married was a dream. We also worked hard to make the ceremony a reflection of our beliefs as a couple – the wedding took place in a glass chapel built by the son of one of our favorite architects, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We have spent the last ten years driving up and down the coast together, so it felt like home. The ceremony itself blended our humanist beliefs with some more traditional ceremonial aspects out of respect and appreciation for our parents and grandparents. See more of this 20’s inspired wedding from Sara at Art Is For Lovers in the full SMP gallery!

More from the Bride… Both the wedding chapel and the reception venue have strong design features. The reception venue was built in the 1920s, and while the chapel was designed in the 1940s, it has strong allusions to the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1920s – so we went with a subtle 20s theme! With that said, we wanted something refined (and to avoid pink boas), so we used the 1920s as inspiration for the colors, type fonts, and designs (and the 1920s art deco quartet that played during the cocktail hour!).

Walking down the aisle and seeing all of my friends and family with my (soon to be) husband at the end was the most incredible feeling. No single highlight, it was all perfect (though zipping around the cliffs in a little Porsche together, hearing the maid of honor, best man, and my father speak, and watching my mom get down on the dance floor are some of the best).

If your dress does not make you feel beautiful, powerful, and strong – you need a new dress. I loved my dress – it made me feel incredible every second of the day, and I love looking at pictures of it. It took a really long time to find, but it was worth it. (Also – unless you have planning super powers – find a great coordinator – Lisa saved my life!)

If You Love White Decor, This Home Will WOW You.

When I first reached out to Sonja over at JS Life & Style about potentially sharing her home with us, it was in thanks to her amazing dining room that I spotted on insta. The chandelier, the rustic wooden table, the chic approachability. Beyond. When I saw all of the imagery though, I was hard-pressed to choose a favorite room (I’m looking at you Master Bedroom) and I was 100% convinced that you would feel the same way. So let’s get to it. Oh wait! There is even more in the gallery and Sonja’s instagram feed is pretty spectacular, too!

DINING ROOM

I wanted our dining room to have a coastal feel to it. Adding a rustic wood table and an oversized beaded chandelier achieves a perfect coastal design. I wanted the dining room to have a seamless feel out to the patio. This was accomplished by using tongue and groove in both spaces to unify the outside with the inside.

Chandelier: Ro Sham Beaux Orbit Chandelier | Chairs: Ballard Designs | Host chairs: Restoration hardware | Table: Restoration Hardware

KITCHEN

I wanted a classic, timeless look to my kitchen. You can’t go wrong with subway tile, and carrara marble countertops. Our Large pendant lighting adds that extra bit of glam to the kitchen. For our butlers pantry we added fun swing door with a porthole. It’s a perfect little room to hide all your mess from your guests.

Pendant Lights: Restoration Hardware | Beveled Subway Tile: World Mosaic Tiles | Counter top: Carrara Marble, honed
Hardware: Jeffrey Alexander, Tiffany collection | Faucet: Rohl | Kitchen runners: Dash and Albert | Pantry Faucet: Brizo | Pantry Chandelier: Aerin

POWDER ROOM

I love wallpaper especially in a powder room, it gives that extra bit of interest. This wallpaper is not too busy and overpowering. It adds a calming, peaceful feel to the room.

Wallpaper: Crown Wallpaper | Lighting: Circa Lighting | Mirror: Layla Grayce | Counter top: Statuary Marble | Faucet: Delta | Marble herringbone tiles – Ames Tiles | Hardware: Emtek

ENTRY HALL

When designing our foyer, I wanted company to feel relaxed and welcomed as soon as they walked in.
A bench is great for guest to be able to sit down and take their shoes off. Adding a large pendant light makes the room feel grand and welcoming.

Chandelier: Circa lighting | Hardwood floors: Pravada floors | Bench: Homesense | Painting: paintinghere.com | Console table: Wisteria | Mirror: Pier 1 Imports | Rug: Wayfair

MASTER BEDROOM

We have a view of Grouse Mountain so I wanted to have high windows and vaulted ceilings to take advantage of it. Adding tongue and groove ceilings adds that extra interest to the room.

Bed, night stands, benches: Restoration Hardware | Lamps: Horchow | Chandelier: Currey & Company | Standing Mirror: HomeSense | Rug: RugsUsa

MASTER BATHROOM

I love classic and traditional bathrooms. We used marble basket weave tiles that sparkle against the light, it just looks so pretty! A freestanding tub against the windows and flanking vanities is my favorite part of the bathroom.

Floor tiles from World Mosaic: Jeffrey Court basket weave tiles | Counter top: Statuary marble | Lighting: Circa lighting
Faucets: Delta | Mirrors: Restoration Hardware | Bathtub and filler: Cheviot Products

GIRL’S ROOM

We continued the vaulted ceilings and tongue and groove in this room as well. The oversized windows allow an abundance of natural light and a viewpoint for the gardens below. Adding a dramatic floral wallpaper adds the perfect wow factor to the room.

Wallpaper: Anewall | Bed: Wayfair | Bedding: RH Teen | Rug: RugsUSA | Chandelier: Horchow | Dresser, nightstand, Vanity: Ikea

BOY’S ROOM

Coastal style was what we were going for in this room. Ocean art prints, chunky knit pillows, with blues and grays tones throughout the room. Wainscoting adds character to the room and helps define the space.

Bed frame, bedding, lamp, pillows, rug: All from RH Teen | Side table: Ikea | Art: Minted |

FAMILY ROOM

This is the most used room of our house, we are always lounging and watching tv here. I wanted it to be cozy and still have some elegance to the room.

Sofas, coffee table, side chairs: Restoration Hardware | Gold side table: Lulu and Georgia | Ceramic side table: Pottery Barn Kids | Fireplace: Lyonstone Fireplaces

MUDROOM

Our main entrance is the mudroom and it’s also connected to the foyer and I didn’t want to have to keep the door shut all the time. Inn designing the room I wanted to have style and an inviting place to be. I wanted to make sure anyone who arrived through the mudroom felt as welcomed and calm as our front foyer. We added a lot of storage cabinets and baskets to hide all our stuff. There is also a walk- in closet to hang more jackets and store shoes.

Floors tiles: Fontile | Hardware: Restoration Hardware | Lighting: Circa lighting | Baskets: Pottery Barn

PATIO

Our patio is another extension of our home. A cozy lounge area and built-in bbq area is perfect for our entertaining needs.

Sofa, chairs, coffee table: Restoration hardware | Area Rug: Dash and Albert | Pillows: Pottery Barn, Joss and Main

Perhaps the Most Beautiful Vows We’ve Ever Heard

If you only scroll through the gorgeous imagery by Kelsea Holder, you’ll fall in love. If you scroll through the gorgeous imagery and then watch the AHHH-mazing video from Anchor Pictures, you will be truly moved. The vows…”I promise to never settle for anything but our best. Even though our best will be beautifully imperfect,”…are some of the loveliest we’ve ever heard. You can see all of the photographs here – but then promise me you will take 6 little minutes to watch the touching film.

From the Bride… Matt and I met a 4 years ago in our little beach town of Manhattan Beach. We met on a festive night in November called the ‘Pier Lighting.’ Every year, the city celebrates the kick off to the holidays by lighting the pier with Christmas lights. Matt and I each happened to be out independently that night and faith has it, we caught each others eye. We hit it off instantly. Three years later we got engaged during the holidays in December at the Lyon Steps in San Francisco. My life with Matt has been full of adventure, laughs and love. We always say that even our imperfections together make perfection and I couldn’t be more thankful for the life we have created.

I come from an Indian background and Matt from an Irish Catholic background. We wanted a wedding that would blend these very culture rich heritages. More importantly, we wanted to have a wedding that felt truly like “us.” So our inspiration was to fuse our cultures with our personalities.

In traditional Indian weddings, the day is full of vibrant colors whether it be reds, pinks or oranges. I knew I wanted a more monochromatic look so we chose color palettes of cream and blush. For design and decorations, we did a lot of dark wood, classic flowers (roses, lisianthus, eucalyptus, etc.), green garlands and candles. The goal was to enhance the beauty of the already incredible venue.

I ended up wearing two wedding dresses, the first a traditional Indian gown and the second, my dream classic white dress. Even for the Indian gown, I ended up doing a beautiful cream color to further add to our theme. The bridesmaids enhanced this with blush dresses from Fame & Partners. Matt wore a beautiful navy tuxedo, as did the groomsmen, which fit perfectly for the very California setting.

Vishakha & Matt from Anchor Pictures on Vimeo.

We fell in love with our venue instantly. I always envisioned getting married at a private estate because it felt like a great way to design a really unique, personalized wedding. Butterfly Lane Estate is located in Montecito, right by the famous Butterfly Beach. The venue has gorgeous architecture, lush greenery and florals, and overall a beautiful aesthetic. It was the perfect fit for our day. Matt had this idea to do a bridal party entrance where each person comes in carrying a different flag. With guests from the United States, England, India, etc., he thought it would be a fun way to make everyone feel united at the kick-off of the reception. And that it was! The bridal party with Matt and I ended up dancing to a great song with the flags waving. It started the night off with such a bang and was a total hit.

My advice is to not stress too much about the details of the wedding because it all ends up coming together. We were told the most important thing was that our guests truly felt the love and that two families were becoming one.

A Morning Wedding With A Doughnut Brunch

From the Bride… We liked the idea of having a morning ceremony and hosting a brunch reception afterwards not only because we love brunch food and mimosas, but because it would allow us to spend all day with our friends and family. It was the perfect decision for us, and the Four Seasons did an amazing job with all the food. Robert loves Voodoo Doughnuts, so we thought they’d be perfect for dessert displayed on a doughnut wall. It turned out to be a great conversation starter – everyone loved talking about the doughnuts and deciding which one they were going to pick! We also enjoyed the giant powdered sugar doughnut they made as our wedding cake. See more of Jenna McElroy’s gorg photos in the FULL GALLERY.

From the bride, Jessica– When Robert and I started planning our wedding, we quickly decided that we wanted it to be an intimate event, with just our closest friends and family present. We live about five hours away from Austin and I wanted to plan the wedding myself, so it was great not having to worry about planning a large-scale event from afar. We also really wanted the day to be as stress-free and fun as possible, with a focus on quality time with each other and all our guests. The Four Seasons Hotel in Austin was an easy choice for our venue. Not only is it beautiful, it holds fond memories for me as my family would visit for special occasions while I was growing up. The back lawn is so picturesque, especially with Lady Bird Lake in the background. We were so fortunate to have perfect weather for our November wedding day so we could take advantage of the outdoor space. Our florist, Mercedez of the Heirloom Table, did such an amazing job on the ceremony site with our floral-wrapped trees. I absolutely loved all of the blush and white flowers that she used, and it was exactly what I had envisioned.

We had originally planned to do a first look, but Robert and I ended up just getting ready together, and we really enjoyed spending that time together before the ceremony. Our photographer, Jenna McElroy did such a great job of capturing everything and we love looking back at the pictures and reliving the day. I also love that we were able to get every wedding guest in one photo for a great keepsake!

Bridal Portraits at Villa Del Lago Events Pavillion

Often in the South, brides choose to have formal bridal portraits taken. It can be so beneficial because the bride then knows how everything will look together on the day of her wedding. Such a fun tradition! For Jerika’s bridals, we rented Villa Del Lago. Jerika absolutely loved the European elegance, it’s romantic and natural vibe. Nestled on the edge of a hill overlooking Lake Travis outside of Austin, Villa Del Lago was the perfect setting for her bridal shoot. Jerika’s father passed away briefly before her wedding, so she had one of his favorite ties sewn into her dress for her something blue. This sentimental touch, along with the architecture, the flowers and the waterfall all worked together to create such memorable bridal portraits. —  Jenna McElroy Photography

Jerika got her stunning Carol Hannah wedding gown at the Lovely Bride boutique. You can see more of Jerika and Harry’s wedding journey on Jenna McElroy’s websiteEngagement Session

How an Interior Designer Hosts a Party

I am so excited to share today’s feature with you because not only is it filled with awesome entertaining tips that we will all keep in our little arsenal, it’s also highlighting one of my favorite interior designers, Marie Flanigan. Marie’s work is the very definition of elegance, as she approaches each project with a sense of grace and timelessness that can literally be felt. In her words, “Magic is found in the balance of vision and attention to the finest details,” whether it’s designing a forever home or hosting a sweet backyard party. Oh and did we mention she is also taking over insta today?

From Marie…Tis the season for celebrating friendships and what better way to do that than with a sweet, garden style luncheon where you can kick back and really enjoy each other. So, we teamed up with some of our favorite local creatives – Maxit Flower Design | Meg Grant & Co | Smart in the Kitchen | Mostess Box | House of Harper  – to host a spring-inspired affair, highlighting one of our latest designs and a few noteworthy outdoor entertaining tips in the process!

BRING THE INDOORS, OUT

Move pieces of indoor furniture outside so that patio and garden spaces become a seamless extension of your home. For larger events with ample time for planning, consider a full-scale dining room setup on the lawn. We love how the chairs in the first pic have a garden-inspired lattice back and breezy linen seat cushion. It’s a subtle nod to garden parties past. If it’s a more casual gathering, consider relocating smaller items like bar carts, ottomans, and side tables to fit your entertaining needs

SHOW YOUR SOFTER SIDE

Offering your guests the same comforts experienced inside your home helps everyone feel relaxed and refreshed.

Expert Tip: Steer clear of patio furnishings that aren’t lounge-worthy, and incorporate soft spots at varying heights where guests can kick back with ease. You can even layer in an outdoor rug to ensure there’s something sumptuous underfoot!

MIX AND MATCH

When it comes to table décor, we love anchoring your place settings with a tablecloth or runner, and then layering a variety of colors, patterns, and textures on top to achieve a fresh, vibrant vibe. Stack mismatched plates, use serving pieces and flatware with various finishes, and top it off with colorful name cards. With friends like Mostess Box, you’ll likely have all of your entertaining needs on hand!

GO AU NATURAL

Allow Mother Nature to take center stage by accenting your vignettes with fresh florals and earthy fruits and vegetables. You (and your guests!) will be amazed at the exquisite range of color found in organic elements!

DESIGN YOUR FLOWERS TO MATCH YOUR VIBE

When it comes to garden-inspired florals, free form is where it’s at. Opt for arrangements that roam low to the table, encouraging connection and conversation between your guests.

LEAVE YOUR CARES AT THE DOOR

Let’s face it – outdoor entertaining doesn’t always go according to plan. But, speaking from experience, embracing the fact that a windy day may disturb your pristine flower arrangements will help you take it in stride when a few of your prettiest buds wind up on the ground. And when it comes to those moments, it never hurts to have a few refreshing cocktail recipes at the ready!

So, pour the bubbly, pop a macaron, and remember that entertaining is all about making memories with your loved ones!

A Modern Eatery Wedding With Handwritten Love Notes to Every Guest

The Bride behind this affair is an interior designer at Harper Gray Design and it makes so much sense when you see the chic restaurant venue.  Mostly because I want my house to look just like this – sleek and modern with a mix of masculine and feminine details, french flair and all gussied up with florals and greenery by Sweet Woodruff. Plus, you just KNOW the food and cocktail game is strong. Be sure to look through the gallery captured by Simply Lace for reactions to the Bride and Groom’s personalized love notes (!!!!) to each and every guest. Spoiler alert, they’re total kodak moments.

From Simply Lace PhotographyThis wedding has got to be one of my all time favourites! The bride, Alyssa, who is an interior designer at Harper Gray Design  brought her dream wedding to life with a few of Toronto finest vendors! The wedding took place at Alo Restaurant in Toronto which is a contemporary French restaurant and cocktail bar located atop a heritage building in downtown Toronto and I have to say, the food was out of this world and the decor was simply stunning. She also brought in floral designer Lisa Gray of Sweet Woodruff and the results were simply beautiful. Alyssa and Maurice had around 40 guests in total for their intimate wedding and they decided to forgo a formal speech and instead, they wrote individual letters to each guests which was such a special and unique gesture of them.

From the bride

What was the inspiration for your wedding, the style/color/scheme? Our inspiration was a modern and sophisticated feel. Colour inspiration were soft blushes, greys, whites.

Why did you choose your wedding venue? We are HUGE foodies! Amazing food was one of our number one priorities for the evening. We fell in love with this restaurant when we went there for a birthday of mine. The food was outstanding and so was the decor. Being an interior designer, the look of the venue was also important to me. This place was already so well designed and had that modern feel we were going for. We also wanted a venue with a small and intimate feel. The venue had a restriction on how many guests it could hold so it was perfect for making us stick to a small guest list.

What was your favourite wedding moment? In lieu of a bride and groom speech we wrote individual notes to each of our guests. It was a beautiful moment to see everyone open our notes and read how much each guest meant to us.

Any advice for engaged couples planning their wedding? Stick to what you want. Don’t let others sway you to do things their way. We stuck to our guns on how many people we invited and exactly how we wanted the night to play out— and I’m so glad we did! It was even better than we had envisioned!

Lake Michigan Inspired Affair

The main reason that Sara and Eric decided on the Pilot House at Discovery World for their wedding reception was because of the incredible 360 degree views of Lake Michigan and Milwaukee’s beautiful Calatrava. From almost every spot in the room, you can see the blue waters of the lake with the Milwaukee skyline in the background. They were both insistent that when designing the overall look for their big day, the amazing views were showcased. Impressions by Esther Fleming created an assortment of all glass vessels that left unobstructed views of the lake. With natural light bouncing off the glass, the entire room took on a light, airy sparkle and the jewel -toned blooms helped create a feeling that was reminiscent of a lush fall garden. ~ The Bride Consultant

See the day unfold in the wedding film from One Fine Day Productions! And more of The Keel Collective images from this fun day are in the full gallery.

From The Bride ConsultantWhen I first met with Sara and Eric, they both talked about their love for the outdoors and how they wanted to showcase their favorite Milwaukee things for all of their out-of-town guests. These two key elements played into many of the design decisions and their entire wedding day, from their venue selection to their food choices.

The main reason why Sara and Eric decided on the Pilot House at Discovery World for their venue was because of the incredible 360 degree views of Lake Michigan and Milwaukee’s beautiful calatrava. From almost every spot in the room, you can see the blue waters of the lake with the Milwaukee skyline in the background. They were both insistent that when designing the centerpieces and overall look for their big day, they wanted to showcase and highlight these amazing views. I worked with their florist, Impressions by Esther Fleming, to create centerpieces using all glass. With an assortment of these glass vessels, guests’ views of the lake were not obstructed. On top of that, they created a light and airy feeling throughout the entire space. The natural light bounced off the glass to give the entire room a certain sparkle. These glass centerpieces were filled with lush, jewel-toned blooms that helped to create a feeling that was reminisce of a fall garden.

Since Sara and Eric met at University of Minnesota, a lot of their guests were from outside of Milwaukee. They wanted to show their guests some of the amazing (and not so healthy) cuisine that Milwaukee is famous for! This included appetizers of Wisconsin fried cheese curds, Simma’s famous cheesecake for dessert, and Gilles’s custard as a late night snack. The entire evening was filled with just as much love as laughter. Sara’s dad (and even the priest) made jokes around Sara’s love for the Green Bay Packers and Eric’s love for the Minnesota Vikings, which included exchanging gifts of Brett Favre jerseys, Eric wearing a cheesehead, and some Viking’s chants. Everything about Sara and Eric’s wedding was so reflective of what they loved together as a couple, which is what made their wedding so incredibly personal!

The Light-Filled Denver Home of an Interior Stylist

When you flip open most magazines, you see homes that are gorgeous. And wildly unachievable. And that bugs me. Because who can afford to do what most glossies consider pretty? But here on SMP Living, it’s different. You get that same magazine-worthy home though instead of Picasso’s and $1500 bar stools, you get ideas for your home where products come from regular ole home stores, styled to look impeccable. Such is the case with Elizabeth Bear – interior designer and stylist to some pretty awesome brands – who is opening up the doors to her light-filled home. So much more on her insta too!

From Elizabeth…I am drawn to high ceilings, large windows without treatments and lots of glass. Love clean simple lines. It’s so important to have natural light in our home. I love the canvas of my home to be neutral tones…using whites and grays. Textures, natural elements and greenery are also important pieces in completing my style. Color is incorporated through artwork and accessories using variations of my favorite blue.

ENTRY
Lighting: Restoration Hardware | Buffet & Planter: West Elm | Wooden Planter: Homefest Decor

Decorating with art has always been done through pieces that I/we have had a personal connection to…family or friends who are artists, places we have visited and discovered galleries. It’s part of my design and style values to collect original art.

FAMILY ROOM (more photos in the gallery)
Art: Black hedgehog from the Menagerie collection at Jonathan Adler | Cowhide Rug: The Cowhide Store |
Gray chair & Couch: West Elm | Metal Bins: Old Glory Style | White Ceramics: Montes Doggett & West Elm & Urban Outfitters | Watercolor artwork: Memory Layne  | White Martini Tables: West Elm | Round Table: West Elm | Sky Beads Blue Dot Pillows and Chair Fabric: Hable Construction

LIVING ROOM (more photos in the gallery)
Chairs & Couch: Pottery Barn Comfort Roll | Glass Lamps: Simon Pearce | Blue Rug: Angela Adams, Lulu  | Round Gray Rug: Custom, Fabers Rug | Wooden Chairs: John Kelly | Watercolor Art: Memory Layne

We also wanted light natural colored hardwood floors and painted the walls the same light color throughout to give a continuous modern look, which works very well with an open floor plan. This cohesive bright style makes me feel at peace, happy and settled.

DINING ROOM
Cherry Wood Basic Extension Dining Table: Circle Furniture | Artwork: by family and friends | Glass Pendants: Simon Pearse | White Hutch: Aspen Leaf Kitchens | Pottery: MacKenzie Childs

I am not a trend follower unless I really love the item. Many things circle back around so if I am constantly chasing the latest “it” thing my home never feels at peace. My advice is to follow your heart not the trends!

KITCHEN & DINING NOOK
Pillows and Window Bench Cushion: West Elm, White Belgian Linen | Lighting: Restoration Hardware, Harmon Collection  | Kitchen Cabinetry: Aspen Leaf Kitchens | Pulls: Restoration Hardware, Aubrey | Caesarstone Countertop: Caesarstone US | White Panton chairs: Design Within Reach

When a Florist Designs Her OWN Wedding…Umm, Wow.

I cannot even IMAGINE the stress/joy/omg/YES! of planning your own wedding when you just happen to be a celebrated wedding florist. The fact that you get to choose all of your dream flowers and build a wedding for yourself with no boundaries or limitations seems both thrilling and terrifying all wrapped up into one beautiful package. But for Rachel, the owner and designer at Floral and Bloom, it looks like she took it all in stride and designed a day that feltwell, perfect. Photographed by the lovely Vicki Grafton, this is what flower dreams are made of. Full gallery (worth it) right here.

From Colin and Rachel (Floral and Bloom Design)… We have so many favorite details from the day of that it is so hard to choose! We chose our venue (The Retreat at Cool Spring) because we knew we wanted a place for our friends to stay for the weekend and to create a very laid back and relaxing environment for all of our guests. The restored historic manor house overlooks the Shenandoah River and was the perfect place for us to say I do surrounded by everyone we love.

My inspiration for flowers were very soft, lush, and romantic garden style florals while still keeping things pretty classic. Leading up to the wedding A LOT of people asked what I was going to do floral wise for my own wedding. The answer truly was that I just picked all of my favorite flowers and greenery and included them in my designs. The house and overall setting was so lovely that I just really wanted the florals + decor to complement it and not overpower it. Some of my favorite flowers from the day of were the dahlias from my favorite local grower in Leesburg, Virginia and the garden roses from another favorite source of mine in California.

Feeling all the love and support from our friends, family, and vendors was the perfect way for Colin and I start our lives together. I am also extremely grateful for every single one of our vendors. It was definitely a little different finally being the Bride but all of our vendors are our friends and made our wedding beyond anything I could have imagined.

Some of our other favorite moments of the day were obviously the flowers, our amazing cake by Buttercream Bakeshop, seeing our nieces and nephew having so much fun throughout the day, Kayleigh’s flower wagon, our escort card display which included a display of all my favorite garden roses from a California garden rose grower I source a lot of my roses from (Grace Rose Farm) and just having all of our favorite people in one place!

From the Vicki Grafton PhotographyRachel, the owner and designer at Floral and Bloom, has a career that revolves around beautiful florals, so for her own wedding she dreamt up lots of lush florals throughout the day. Some of my favorite elements were the lavish floral cake table, the floral chuppah and the trailing florals on the venue staircase. She also had 3 different table designs with floral centerpieces to coordinate with each.

When Two US Airforce Officers Tie the Knot…and the Result is Magic

Some may say that what we do on Style Me Pretty – obsess over flowers and gowns and pretty things – is insignificant. But that isn’t at all what we do. We celebrate. We celebrate love and family, tradition and ceremony. And on a day like today, where we have the honor of also celebrating the incredible people who have given their life for our country – we remember just how important those very pillars of our lives are to all of us. After all, it’s love that is at the very root of what we honor today. To all of the men and women who are or have served, we stand beside you as we remember the amazing people who have fallen.

Today’s wedding celebrates the amazing wedding of TWO Air Force Officers. Their beautiful story travelled the globe and thanks to the photos from Love Janet, we are able to tag right along beside them. Read on and click here for the full gallery!

From Kasey, the bride…I commissioned as a Second Lieutenant back in 2012 from the University of Southern California, and I met my husband while in ROTC. The two of us were two-thirds of our Air Force commisioning class, and we’ve been teammates since day one. It’s not always easy. With rotating deployment schedules we have spent a lot of time apart, however, we use that as fuel to enjoy the time we do have together. In typical military fashion, we got legally married in 2016 between deployments to ensure that we wouldn’t get stationed apart and then took our time planning our dream wedding for September 23, 2017. I wouldn’t change any of it for the world.

Our wedding was a long time in the planning and making. I actually planned a majority of it from my first deployment to Africa having had only one chance to visit venues and meet vendors prior to leaving. The framework for the day was planned long before. We are both from Southern California, so coming back to California for our families was a must.

Long before we got engaged, I had looked online at venues (because, you know what girl doesn’t?) and found a few I loved in close driving distance to my grandparents in Orange County, who were both in their late nineties. I had always wanted to get married at a beautiful church, and Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano became the dream ceremony location. Sadly, I lost both of my grandparents before the wedding and honoring those who couldn’t be there was very important to me in the details, one of the many reasons when the Mission was available, we chose to have our ceremony there.

One of the biggest elements we made sure were included were proper ranks and titles. So much of the wedding industry is focused on Mr. & Mrs. Type items. We are both Captains, and I kept my name. We had friends and guests who have titles they earned and own names they kept. In every opportunity, we did our best to honor that. The other fun element we included was the traditional sabre arch leaving the church. We were fortunate to have Los Angeles Air Force Base’s honor guard loan us the sabres and our groomsmen and friends participate in the arch.

Kasey & Evan from Monroe Films on Vimeo.

The most fun ideas to find while planning were the smaller details that we used to make the wedding truly our own. Evan and I are major Harry Potter nerds. We actually got engaged at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando on a green screen, while wearing Hogwarts robes. However, the goal was to keep the day as elegant as we could, so we carefully included small nods to our love of the series throughout the day.

I really wanted to make sure guests noticed the small touches, so we hosted a scavenger hunt at the reception for all the details with the winners taking home Harry Potter T-Shirts, ties, and glasses. Because we’d been together for so long, we included photos throughout the reception over the years, from embarrassing ones at 19, to our formal engagement photos. Of course, the most important for us was the memory setup for my three late grandparents. We placed that memorial in a quieter place where guests could (and did) spent some time to honor them.

Some of my fondest memories have to do with the overall fun of the day. If you look at the video, there is a segment where one of the groomsmen introduces the concept of the party shirts and we “start the party” that wasn’t planned or scripted, he got up and did that for us and it such a great memory for our guests one of my friend’s dad made his own party shirt for her wedding!

We didn’t do a first look with the photographer, we did a first touch prior to walking down the aisle. I just wish we’d had more time for that. I also wish we’d been able to make it to our own cocktail hour, but staying away until the grand entrance actually went really well in hindsight. Time was the biggest issue all day, but I’d say make sure to take a second and breathe and enjoy the day as best you can and when all the events are over, just have a blast and enjoy it.

To say our story has been an adventure is the understatement of a lifetime. Over eight years since our first date we are so excited to share our marriage with our family, friends, and loved ones. Not a lot of people know the story of our first date. Having been close friends for a few months, and both still in ROTC, we were hesitant to start something, worried we’d wreck the friendship we’d begun and complicating our careers. Thank God we took that leap. As I sit here trying to put the story of our love into words I realize it has been one long and, at times, complicated roller coaster, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Three states, four different bases, four deployments, and four fur-babies later, we’re more than ready for this next chapter together.

Thank you to the family and friends who will travel to spend this day with us. We know (for those of you not used to the military life) that this big wedding a year after we legally got married is a bit non-standard, but it doesn’t make it any less special to us. We’re getting to share the most important part with all of you as we truly take the plunge as Husband and Wife.

Sun Soaked Tuscan Wedding

Even though temps soared well over 100 degrees, Abby and Jeff’s guests were perfectly content celebrating the day. A wedding that dreams are made of. Seriously, who wouldn’t enjoy a yummy outdoor Tuscan dinner party, great Italian wine, surrounded by their close friends and family? Enjoy these sun-soaked images from Les Amis Photo and film by Marco Caputo Films. Wedding Planning by Exclusive Italy Weddings. See the full real wedding feature on Les Amis Photo’s blog [HERE]

From the bride… Jeff and I wanted to have a civil ceremony in Florence. We envisioned a reception at a Villa that would basically be a big outdoor dinner party under the stars with great food and great wine and all of our closest family and friends that turns into a dance party to the “classics” afterwards! We both have more sophisticated and traditional tastes, but we didn’t want that to mean “stuffy.” Casual elegance probably best suits our style. There were so many good options and we loved all of the sites but our favorite was Villa Le Fontanelle. Even during a heat-wave and wedding day temperatures of 103 degrees Fahrenheit, we had guests commenting on how “this looked like a Vogue wedding. If your guests can forget the heat and appreciate the beauty of an event, you know that what you’ve got is special!

Second, it’s also our way to celebrate the unofficial start to the Summer Season! And all of the crazy sales that are happening. Here’s what’s on my wish list and as we’re whipping our our credit cards, let’s also try to take time to remember what we’re really truly remembering today.

Elegant Wedding at Westchester Country Club Full of Surprises

Who doesn’t like a good surprise? That’s just what Jordan and Eric got when their floral-framed escort card board revealed a surprise painting of their beloved dog, Tucker, by Social Alchemy. To the delight of all, Tucker also made an appearance at the wedding. Their guests were then surprised by personal letters written by their families awaiting them at their reception tables. The evening ended with a surprise fireworks display and a huge sign displaying the couple’s names. See more of this enchanting wedding from Melani Lust Photography in the full gallery.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/237220567 600 338]

From Melani Lust Photography … Jordan and Eric met their freshman year at Miami University through mutual friends, but didn’t start dating until their senior year at Miami! For her surprise proposal, Eric woke her up at 4:15am, with a bouquet of flowers and a card. The card directed her to pack a bag for a weekend at the beach and not to ask any questions “because everything was taken care of,” and off they went to Florida. That night, they went to the beach where Eric proposed and when Jordan turned around their parents were running down the beach!

With so many out of town guests, the couple chose Westchester Country Club for its proximity to the airport and her childhood home. The vision for their wedding was neutral and simple elegance with whites and greens, with slight touches of blues and lavenders. The custom grey wood floor, clear top tent and carefully selected linens and papers worked beautifully in to that vision. Their escort card board stood with a frame of flowers and a special surprise for the bride and groom, underneath the escort cards, was a surprise painting of their dog, Tucker, for them to take home. Tucker also made an appearance at the wedding, to the delight of all.

The bride explains, “The best planning advice we received was: ‘Write down three of the most important things to you and three of the least important things to you for your wedding day. Stay true to those top three and don’t let others convince you to deviate from those things.'”

My Favorite Kitchens of All Time

I’m so happy that Style Me Pretty is back up and running. I’m happy for the vendors that we get to showcase. I’m happy for the pretty that we get to preserve. I’m happy for myself that I get to once again, dive into the rabbit hole of the interwebs, saving one beautiful something after another and calling it work. So selfishly, this post is for me. Because I’m currently in the VERY beginning stages of thinking through a kitchen remodel thus, I wanted to visit my list of All-Time Favorite Kitchens and blame it all on Style Me Pretty!

Amazing, right? Do you recognize any of them? What are your faves?

I go round and round on what I would want my own kitchen to look like. White and clean with touches of golds and blues? Dark and moody with natural wood elements and stark white walls? Aged and well-worn with a antique inspired cabinetry and handmade pottery tucked into every corner? It’s a tough call. But here is one of the looks that I’m currently coveting so you can let me know what you think! All sources below!

MARBLE  |  ROUND BREAD BOARD  |  FLORAL ART  | PORTRAIT ART  | GOLD PENDANT LIGHT  |  STOVE  |  STOOL  | RUG  |  CANDLE  | GOLD FLATWARE  |  DINNERWARERECTANGULAR CUTTING BOARD

THE STOVE: The entire vibe for this kitchen really revolves around this epic stove. I don’t even want to tell you the dirty things I’d do with this stove. I love it. I think it loves me back and it’s a number 1 contender for new kitchen.

The RUG: I have an Anthropologie runner in my current kitchen. I like it. It’s a machine made rug that has aged gracefully despite the face that I have three children and two dogs – one of which is a not potty trained puppy. So, I really do appreciate the look that this rug gives without the hefty price tag.

The STOOLS: I love these stools. Always have, always will. I’m 99% sure that whatever look I settle on for my kitchen, it will involve these stools.

The Marble: I know that we can talk about marble until we’ve lost the ability to think but I do feel that spending the time hunting for that perfect slab is well worth the effort. Every piece of marble is so different. They finish differently. They age differently. They catch light in their own unique way. Just like any other stone, the nuances are so unique to each slab so I will most definitely be putting in the hours that it takes to find the right piece to highlight all of the other elements of our kitchen.

The Lights: Confession. I actually already bought two of these Regina Pendants for our future kitchen. I’m obsessed with them. But, if I were to go in this direction, I would consider swapping them out for these Pottery Barn pendants instead.

The Art. I think that people gravitate towards “Kitchen Art” – herbs, bowls of food, things of that nature. I don’t love that approach. I get so happy when I see a small portrait tucked into some open air shelves or a pretty floral piece that brings some color into the space. Art is one of those things that is often totally forgotten about when it comes to kitchens.

The Accessories. Aside from art, I have a love affair of little trinkets that I can find that will make my kitchen feel like mine. After my last trip to Brimfield (an amazing flea and antique market here in New England), I came back with some blue and white Blue Willow Pottery, 2 enormous round bread boards just like in the picture above and a few other little odds and ends that now sit happily in my own kitchen. LOVE love love the look of bread boards on the wall, a pretty candle burning near the sink and a gorgeous table set with White Dishes and Gold Flatware (I have six sets…which is embarrassing).

So tell me in the comments below…what does YOUR dream kitchen look like?

How to Take Engagement Photos that You Really Love

It is important to me that during our SMP reboot, we are not only celebrating the real weddings of the world but that we are also serving as a resource for couples who are going into this planning journey feeling nervous and perhaps unprepared. So, I love this next post that beloved photographer, Jose Villa, helped me with – how to get what you really want out of your engagement photos. Packed with REAL information on what you can do to prepare and how you can help yourself relax during this early phase moment..so that you leave with photos that you love and that you can’t wait to show off.

Get Comfortable. Now this could mean comfort in a very physical sense – choosing clothes that you are comfortable in, that you can move in, that make you feel like you – but, it can also mean comfort in a far bigger sense. Choosing a surrounding that you know and feel at home in, having a glass (not three) of wine in a quiet setting before you gear up to shoot, getting your makeup done professionally so you feel gorgeous, asking your photographer – very specifically – to give you ideas on how you can get better shots so that you feel prepared and more at ease. Whatever you need to do to help set the stage for comfort – even in what might feel like an uncomfortable situation – is going to help you feel far more relaxed.

Trust Your Photographer. This is really big, people. If you went through the effort of finding a photographer that you love – whose innate style you love and whose output of imagery you love – trust them. Listen to them. Let them guide you. The more you force poses that you’ve seen before or try to specifically construct what you want the final outcome to look like, the less room your photographer will have to do what they do best.

So what really makes a good photograph?

“It has to be both emotional and technically right on. You have to be in the right place at the right time, and the easiest way to do that is to be aware of your surroundings. The more you practice, the better you become at anticipating the next moment.” —Jose Villa

Find the Light. I have had a million headshots and in-action shots taken of myself. But there is one set that I always go back to. Because the light is spectacular. It’s called the Magic Hour and usually happens in the hour before the sun sets, where the world just seems to glow. And so will your skin. And your hair, and your eyes. The right light can soften and perfect everything so the camera doesn’t have to work as hard.

Let Your Photographer Be Themselves. Select a photographer whose style you love and DON’T expect them to change that very style to fit some look or feel that you saw on Pinterest. Because it’s not going to work. A photographer will always have a personal aesthetic. An approach to color and style and lighting and composition. It’s a craft that they have studied and perfected. If you force them out of it and into another style, it’s not that they can’t do it, it’s that the level of artistry will be different. It will feel forced. And it will show in your final photos.

Don’t Copy. Don’t expect to recreate an image you saw online. This is SO common by the way. It’s probably one of the top three complaints from photographers heard round the world. You see an amazing shot of a couple on SMP, the light just so, she’s tucking her hair behind her ear and he is gazing at her with pure love in his eyes. Guess what? That was candid. That actually happened. It wasn’t artificially created and posed. So if you then try to mimic that look, there is a solid chance that you will be super disappointed in the outcome. It all goes back to trusting your photographer and letting the experience and those amazing shots unfold in a very natural way.

Think About Photo Usage. Consider how you will be using your engagement photos… Your wedding website? Framed in your home? On your save the dates? Convey these ideas to your photographer so that they can shoot with those priorities in mind. So that they know to shoot vertical shots for an invitation. They know to shoot horizontal for your website. Which brings us to…

Share, share, share. Share as much as you can about your wedding with your photographer. The more you share about the wedding itself – the vibe, the venue, the details, the color (even if still just rough ideas) – the more they can guide the shoot in a way that will compliment all of those elements. You will get much more use out of your photos if they fit the look and feel of your wedding details.

Know your angles. And in this day and age of the selfie, that shouldn’t be too hard. In an interview Jose did for Brides Mag, he said … “Turn toward the center of the frame. Don’t drop your chin. Relax your shoulders. Breathe! Got all that! You’ll look gorge.” Basically everything.

Don’t overthink things. “Im really tired of shoots that are over-styled. I’m super over those. It just kind of trashes the whole thing. Keeping it simple and not overdoing things with tons of crap in the picture is better.” — Jose Villa. Because here’s the deal. You two have your own totally interesting, emotion filled story to tell. You don’t need a ton of props and poses to share that story. Instead, go in with a few funny memories tucked into your pocket, a few words that you’ve always wanted to say. Talk to each other, laugh with each other, mess with each other and go to that place that you two feel most yourselves – whether it’s serious and intense or lighthearted and fun.

Kiss like no one is watching. When all else fails, just make out. Seriously. A good makeout session is the equivalent of three cocktails. It will either heat things up, it will make you die laughing or it will instantly relax you. Probably all of the above. Then the shoot can really begin.

Would You Give Up These 8 Things To Marry a Royal?

It’s official. Royal wedding withdrawals have set in. Now that Meghan Markle is The Duchess of Sussex, we can’t wait to see what good she does with her shiny new title. But one thing is for sure—she’ll have to give up a few things first. There’s no denying that marriage is a compromise, but when it comes to marrying a royal? It is expected that certain unspoken rules and guidelines be abided by out of respect. Would you be willing to give up all eight listed below?

Trade Your Career for the Crown

“There’s no royal decree stipulating that once you become a member of the Royal Family, you must forgo other professional activities,” says Alison Eastwood, editor in chief of Hello! Canada. While it will no longer be acceptable for Megan Markle to continue her acting career, she’ll surely be able to bring attention to other important matters through philanthropy and other charitable work. Sounds like a pretty amazing gig if you ask us.

Your Right to Vote (and Hold a Political Office)

The reasoning behind this one is that a royal’s vote could influence public opinion in an unfair way. According to the UK government site “Although not prohibited by law, it is considered unconstitutional for the Monarch to vote in an election”. The same goes for other members of the royal family. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told Newsweek in June 2017 that members of the royal family do not vote “by convention.”

Dark Nail Polish Be Damned

One unspoken rule of the Queen is nude nails only. That’s right, Meghan Markle has to give up wearing dark nail polish. Only nude or light colors are acceptable, like the Queen’s favorite, Ballet Slippers by Essie.

Sayonara Short Hemlines & Deep Necklines

It comes as no surprise that Her Majesty The Queen disapproves of short hemslines and deep necklines. Meghan will have to trade mini skirts and short suits for dresses that don’t rise over an inch or two above the knee.

Wave Goodbye to Wedges

It is known in The Royal Family that her Majesty The Queen is not fond of wedges. Although that hasn’t stopped The Duchess of Cambridge from wearing them, so maybe Meghan will break that rule too.

No More Autographs

Something most of us commoners wouldn’t miss—but for Meghan Markle, this might take some getting used to! And did you know she was a calligrapher? It’s true. She’ll have to retire her pen now for Duchess status.

No Social Media

Social media is thought of as unseemly to the Royal Family, so it’s no surprise that The Duchess of Sussex shut down her Instagram account and lifestyle website, The Tig, earlier this year. It is thought that this rule is a bit outdated (Princess Eugenie has her own official account), and we’re betting this might change in the near future. But still, no Insta? This one might be the hardest rule yet!

No Selfies

Same goes for selfies. The Queen supposedly finds them “disconcerting” and “strange”.

Magical Key West Wedding at The Southernmost House

Veronica and Robert were married at one of the most quaint and charming churches in Key West, Florida. They exchanged vows with church windows wide open, a lovely breeze and sunshine streaming through. After the ceremony they strolled through the city taking a variety of photos at the Truman Annex, Butterfly Conservatory, and the famous Key West Lighthouse. An intimate, coastal wedding reception followed at the Southernmost House. As the sun was setting off the water and the sky was painted beautifully, guests ate and enjoyed the Mansions backyard overlooking the Sea. It was pure magic and romance! … Erika Delgado Photography

Prettiest Baby Shower for One of the Loveliest Ladies Around

Selfishly, this post is SUCH a treat! Not only is it the baby shower of our friend Diana Perrin – founder of Casa de Perrin – I also spotted so many of my sweet Cali friends that I haven’t seen in a long time! The shower was photographed to perfection by Joel Serrato with, absurdly lovely tableware from Casa, beauty styling by TEAM, amazing paper goods from Amber Moon & the prettiest florals ever from Honey & Poppies. Planned by Events of Love and Splendor, you can see the whole thing right here!

From Diana of Casa de Perrin…I was so excited to celebrate the impending arrival of Baby de Perrin with family and friends. Luckily, some of my dearest friends also work in the events industry, and were able to help plan this incredible celebration for our Baby Girl. Angel Swanson of Love and Splendor helped me put my vision for baby girl to reality!

The basis of the design was inspired by the llama wallpaper I chose for our nursery, which Amber Moon of Amber Moon Design made into envelope liners for the invitations. From there, we went with a soft palette of dusty hued envelopes, calligraphed in white by Anne Robin, for a girly but not too girly overall palette.

Megan Gray of Honey & Poppies created a beautiful Spring palette of blooms, and individual floral crowns for all my guests, which were laid on top of mismatched plates from our Heath Ceramics lines in Opaque White, French Grey and our Casa de Perrin custom colors in Sunrise and Wildflower. The settings also included our Goa Flatware in Brushed 24k Gold/Wood, Bella 24k Gold Rimmed Stemless Glassware in Blush, and Pink + Gold Salt Cellars. Everything sat on top of Marshall Reclaimed Wood vintage tables, paired with vintage white bistro chairs from Found Vintage Rentals

My lovely friend Mar of Team Hair and Makeup came the morning of the shower to make me feel my best, before ultimately returning back to celebrate the day. When the photos of the day arrived in the mail from Joel Serrato I nearly squealed with joy.

The food, provided by Annie Campbell Catering was not only incredibly delicious, but equally as beautiful, and included a Champagne bar with assorted syrups, fresh juices and bitters, a lillet rose cocktail, and flat and sparkling waters. Additional items that were served: farmer’s market crudités platter, mini grilled cheese with pickled apple and crispy sage, english peak pancakes with dungess crab and meyer lemon creme fraiche, buttermilk fried chicken sliders on brioche buns with pickles and aoili, and cheeseboards with fruit, nuts, fig jam, honey, crackers, breads and other various and yummy accouterments. Ashley Capra from Paula Le Duc Fine Catering and Events had favors made and shipped to us from San Francisco for all my guests—the sweetest “Meringue Kisses” in the colors of our Heath Ceramics plates, beautifully gifted in ceramic white bowls with blush ribbon.

I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to celebrate with friends and family, and all the love they showed for our growing family. We can’t wait to meet our baby girl!
