Found Inspirations

I am constantly inspired by other bloggers. Not just wedding bloggers…design bloggers, photography bloggers, food bloggers, the works. And Oh Joy! is one of my first morning pit stops. I actually became hooked when I stumbled upon the pictures from her wedding that we posted today…but have since fallen in love over and over again.

Take Max Wanger for example. Discovered via Oh Joy!, these engagement shots of Joanna Goddard are complete perfection…

max wanger

Or Robert Sukrachand…another Oh Joy! find. His work has just the right balance of elegance and whimsy. Simplicity and personality. Robert’s blog and website are absolute eye candy…

Joy’s eye for style and design is unmatched and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for continuing to thrill me day in and day out.  And of course, for sharing her big day with us.

Lastly, you guys really have to check out our Little Black Book Blog today. Hollye Schumacher (an incredible photographer out of Phoenix) is sharing tips on looking your best in those scary first photographs…the engagement portraits! It’s a must-read for sure.

Real Wedding: Oh Joy, IV!

Here is a last look at today’s featured wedding…Joy Deangdeelert Cho of Oh Joy! along with her incredibly talented photographer, Karen Wise, have graciously shared these lovely, lovely pictures with us…

E*Shoots: Tips From Hollye Schumacher

At the beginning of December, Abby posted some great advice on wedding photography from Karen Rusten of Brown Mouse Photography. If you missed it, you totally have to go back (start here) and read it cover to cover (part II, III)!

But today, we’re cranking it back a few paces and dealing with those other photos … the first photos you’ll take now that you’re engaged!!

E*Shoots From Hollye Schumbacher

E* shoots … from ordinary to extraordinary! Gone are the days of sweet, sentimental engagement photos. Nowadays, crazy, sensual, just plain fun … anything goes! We’ve asked our own dream team of experts, the Little Black Book photographers, to share some tips and tricks to achieving those extraordinary engagement shots that you’ll be proud to claim as your first piece of true art!

Today, we’ve asked Holly Schumacher, a fabulous fine art and wedding photographer to give us her best advice to couples preparing for their engagement sessions.

from Hollye

I would first (and most importantly) find a photographer who shoots in different outdoor locations. Ask the photographer if they specialize in customized engagement sessions. Does the photographer shoot in a lot of similar locations with similar poses, or is their a lot of variety? Once you find your photographer, share information about yourselves, such as, things you like to do together, places you frequently eat, what type of couple you are (romantic, traditional, playful, outgoing) and the story of how you met. The more a photographer knows about a couple, the more personalized the engagement session will be.The “about us” list, also acts as a source of inspiration. I’ve found the best spots based on this feedback, shooting in a playground, in swinging chairs at the fair, at In-N-Out Burger, in a fountain, cooking store, etc.

Hollye Schumacher Engagement Bible

I found out from one of my couples that the groom had proposed to his girlfriend by putting the engagement ring in the bible that they read every night. When she opened the book, the ring fell out into her lap and he proposed to her. When I did their engagement session at their house, I had them get out the book and I photographed the ring in the book creating a heart out of the shadow. If you’re wanting to do something creative, be sure to convey it to the photographer and give them an example of something you saw that moved you.

Everyone has a different level of tolerance in front of the camera. If you (or your fiance) is not willing to get wet, dirty, or mess up your hair, then beware of what you ask for.

Engagement Shoot Hollye Schumacher Beware Of What You Ask For

I know that when clients come to me and verbally tell me that they want an out-of-the-box engagement session they should strap themselves in for an exciting ride. Try to be yourself in front of the camera. For some, this means drinking a glass of wine (only ONE) before the session or getting in a good mood and leaving the day’s dramas behind. A lot of couples can be nervous before the session which can create tensions when they arrive for the shoot. Do your best to acknowlege that you may be nervous, but that tension will quickly fade once you start. If you are not so great at styling your hair (myself included) have your hair and make up professionally done. It can make or break a session. Your photographer can create the most amazing images, but if you didn’t like your hair, it’s a complete waste of time. Ultimately, you want to be happy with how you look in the picture. Be sure to go to a stylist you trust who has done it in the past so you’re not left with a style that looks like someone else.

Engagement Shoots Hollye Schumacher Artistic

If you get great images, do something with them! If you spend the time and money to do a fun session, be sure to either create a guest sign-in book, holiday card, slideshow, website, or large wall portrait, with the images. Do not let them waste away. I have a set of photos from my engagement session between myself and my husband at my house and office, and they never cease to remind me of the love we share and the fun time we had making the images.

Hollye Schumacher E*shoots Romantic

Such great advice, Hollye! Thanks so much for this first in a series of Little Black Book posts on E*shoots.

Hollye Schumacher Photography is based in Phoenix, Arizona, but if you read her bio, you’ll see she’s addicted to travel … so if you love her style (and who wouldn’t!) shoot her an e*mail.  Her December 30 blog has some more seriously incredible engagement shots from Lauren and Merrill’s e*shoot. Don’t know how they’ll be able to choose … they’re all so fun!

If any of you guys have stories to tell about your own e*shoots … please let us know by sending us a comment. I’m sure other couples would really like to hear from you, too! OR if you have questions … send ’em our way. We’ve got a panel of experts who can help you with any question you might have!

Real Wedding: Oh Joy!

Happy New Years everyone! This is going to be a great year…I can just feel it. Of course, with a new year, comes new resolutions. I am keeping it simple this year. One, get a hobby. I’ve decided to finally learn how to use my gorgeous Canon Rebel camera using my little girl, Audrey, as constant inspiration. And secondly, stay connected with friends. I have this terrible habit of never picking up my phone and even more so, never checking my messages. Well, that laziness is a thing of the past. Mark my word.

So those are my personal resolutions…my SMP resolutions are much, much more exciting. I don’t want to tell you too much just yet, but I will say that we are working really hard behind the scenes to create an incredibly beautiful, really useful, wonderfully innovative site for all of you. In the coming months we are going to be rolling out features that will knock your socks off! I promise!

But for today…I thought that I would celebrate all of this blogging goodness with a wedding from one of my FAVORITE bloggers! Joy Deangdeelert Cho of the fabulous Oh Joy!

joy-1

This wedding is pretty much as good as it gets. Designed by someone who is so ridiculously talented and photographed by one of our favorite Little Black Book photographers, Karen Wise, every detail is captured to perfection. So much more to come from Joy’s gorgeous wedding.

Kevin and Elle’s Glamorous Affair by Twin Lens

Hello and Happy New Year from the editors of Style Me Pretty’s Little Black Book Blog!

We are so excited for today’s post! We are going to start this New Year off RIGHT by featuring a glamourous evening wedding from our friends Kitty Clark Fritz and Craig Fritz of Twin Lens Photography.  From the bride’s incredible dress, to the whimsical ceremony, to the vibrant and colorful reception, this is a total show-stopper!

Elle and Kevin Board 1

This wedding is overflowing with femininity and style… This is what the beautiful bride, Elle, had to say on what inspired her totally fabulous wedding style…

from the bride, Elle …

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers, with a little Audrey Hepburn thrown in. I just love them. I am a romantic at heart, but try not to show it since I work on Wall Street and love that too! We didn’t want it to be too stiff. I always dreamed of having a white tie ball and so I decided the only time I could guarantee that would be my wedding.

Elle even had her good friend and hair stylist, Ken Bowling, replicate Audrey Hepburn’s hair style from the ball room scene in My Fair Lady.  And, as I’m sure many of you are wondering, Elle purchased her stunning Lazaro gown, hairpiece, and earrings from Klienfeld Manhattan. Take a peek at some photos from the traditional Medieval Christian Ceremony on the lawn of the stately Federal Courthouse in downtown Santa Fe.

Elle and Kevin Board 2

I am in love. The soft pink and the scattered rose petals give this ceremony a completely romantic fairytale feeling. Kitty and Craig, the fabulous husband and wife duo of Twin Lens, did a fantastic job of capturing the whimsical charm of this wedding. They were also joined by Twin Lens team member, Lisa Krantz, who happens to be an award winning photojournalist. The team used digital 35 mm cameras with vintage, medium format Twin Lens Reflex and plastic Holga film cameras to take the seriously gorgeous ethereal photos.

By the way, take a peek at those incredible flowers! The rose and orchid theme was created by Margaret Bost, owner of Santa Fe Floral.  This is what our bride, Elle, had to say about her flower theme…

I love the traditionalism and simplicity of the rose and Kevin adores orchids. White is the most formal, so of course we went with that. I also think it is the most classy and elegant color for a ball. Gold was our wedding color, so gold and cream we felt would go beautifully together. Gold also feels old fashioned, and again, I am very old fashioned.

Elle also incorporated gold and white into her wedding reception at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, a distinctive (and totally pink!) building in downtown Santa Fe.  The results are just fabulous!

Elle and Kevin Board 3

Talk about stunning. Between the warmth of the gold accents and the candles dripping with crystals, this reception had a totally luxurious feel. What a perfect ending to a gorgeous whimsical wedding that was nothing short of fairy-tale loveliness. Thank you again to our friends at Twin Lens! Happy New Year!

A Look Back, III…

This post was something that I vowed to do in 2008…and simply didn’t. I have no excuses! The Look for Less is my SMP New Year’s resolution for 2009.

chewing the cud

Chewing the Cud is one of my all time favorite design firms…and in 2008, they launched their brand new wedding line that I obsessed over. Even more fun, the designer, Viola, shared a few of her invitation look for less tips…

–Combine your information into one component (for example, include the reception information on the main invitation, rather than purchasing a separate card)

–Eliminate the response envelope by creating an RSVP postcard.

–Figure out if some of the information be communicated online? Directions, things to do etc. are perfect for your wedding website.

To see the rest of her brilliant tips, click right here!

A Look Back, II…

When I first posted this wedding, I honestly thought that this was one of the most beautiful weddings I had ever seen. Knowing that they designed a stunning affair for $13,000 made it all even sweeter…

A Look Back…

2008 was completely life changing for me. My husband and I packed it up and headed from San Francisco to Boston, a move that brought us closer to our families. We bought our first house in the cutest neighborhood in the world, we bought grown-up people furniture, we even got a Volvo. And of course, we had our best gift ever…our little girl Audrey.

Most surprisingly though was that my blog really took off and became something I never could have dreamed. Something that I am so grateful to have, something that constantly brings a smile to my face.

So for me, 2008 was a smashing success. I thought that today, we could look back at some of my favorite features from this wonderful year. The first, being that GORGEOUS Lisa Vorce Wedding that we showed you guys back in May…

All of the photographs were taken by Cheri Pearl. To see the rest of this gorgeous wedding, click here, here and here! Stay tuned to see more of my favs!

Real Wedding: Lisa and Benjamin, V

Here is a last look at today’s gorgeous wedding. The bride put her heart and soul into designing a wedding that reflected she and her fiance’s unique personalities and style…and it shows. The end result was nothing short of lovely.

real wedding tanja lippert

The really good stuff from the bride…

The programs took a while to complete. I bought all my paper from the Paper Source because they made it so easy with all the different paper/envelope choices. I printed out one of my favorite quotes on a piece of vellum. An image of the scale was underneath. This detailed shot I took was symbolic because the scale’s weight was set on 12, which was our wedding date and this image was used on our save the dates as a teaser to what people would see at the reception. I tied everything together with an “antiquey” ribbon that was also used on the favors.

We used wish rocks as a paperweight for the programs. It was also used for a moment of silence for all of our friends and family to bless us with good thoughts. The rocks were then collected and we have them in our home as a source of good energy.

The pound theme was even displayed in the favors. A couple days before the wedding my 2 bridesmaids and my mom & dad helped me bake mini bundt pound cakes. Then we wrapped them in tulle with a thank you note and a pound quote. That was a great day, though tiring, because it really helped my friends and my folks bond.

My favorite piece of collateral though was the table seating cards. I designed a three dimensional mini tent card piece, shaped like little gram weights with the table numbers on them. I had used the gram weight shape as a border throughout the collateral. It took me forever to cut them out, but it was well worth it. I then used a metallic pen and hand wrote everyone’s names on them.

I worked with Stephanie Masquelier at Flours to design a cake that went with our look. I designed a modern look by using the circle from our logo. It was a 3 tier round fondant cake made up of white cake with organic raspberries and crème mousseline.

Because I had such a great experience designing my own wedding I’ve decided to start my own personalized invite company called The Gala Girls. I really want to share my experience as a former bride and my extensive design experience to help other couples develop an identity system and theme for their special day. My services will be a melding of graphic designer and event planner to make up a couple’s event experience.

Thank you so much to Lisa for sharing your big day with us! And to Tanja Lippert for inspiring us yet again!

Real Wedding: Lisa and Benjamin, IV

Here are a few more details and pictures from today’s featured wedding…

Loving the splash of red to an otherwise hugely elegant palette. So chic. Here are a few more details from the bride…

Another part of the family we wanted to incorporate is our little chihuahua mix, Bisou. She was our little flower girl and her boyfriend, Zoomer, was the ring bearer. Our friend Heather helped out with the training and also conveniently Kim’s wife and Zoomer’s mom!

More to come!
