Wedding Style: Classic Tradition, Elegance and Love

Sometimes, words fail. That is when the memories take over.

A classically beautiful wedding from Jeffrey and Julia Woods

Jeffrey Julia Woods Fine Art Wedding Photography

Jeffrey and Julia Woods are to weddings … what love is to marriage. A team. A fusion of style, emotion and tradition … with hearts full of passion.

jeffrey and julia woods pre wedding prayers

After looking and looking and looking at the images from this wedding, I honestly felt as if I knew Ashley and Andrew’s family. I felt as if I had seen every kiss, felt every hug and shed every tear of the day! I am a total sucker when it comes to grooms’ expressions. Usually it’s when the bride is walking toward him. I am a die-hard advocate of getting that one essential shot. This time, though, it was the photo of Ashley’s Dad & Andrew’s handshake. I can almost hear the impassioned  “I promise … I will ……”

Jeffrey Julia Woods Ashley Andrew Catholic Wedding Ceremony

Ashley and Andrew exchanged vows on the 5th of July at the Cathedral of St. Mary of Immaculate Conception in Peoria, Illinois.  A wedding day filled with love and laughter with a tiny bit of nervousness … as all wedding days should be. An elegant dinner reception followed at the Peoria Country Club.

Jeffrey Julia Woods Ashley Andrew Wedding Cake

The exquisite cake was provided by Barb Evans, an independent cake creator and owner of the Wedding Cake Connection.

from Ashley’s mom … “Their cake was based on a Martha Stewart design. We made some changes to the original decorating design to reflect Ashley and Andrew’s personality. Ashley’s 5 layer ivory fondant cake was customized by adding their monogram, a lace pattern that worked back to the French lace in her gown, a heart pattern reminiscent of her grandmother’s sentiment “you’re a part of my heart”, and a design that replaced small flowers with tiny grape clusters to represent Ashley and Andrew’s appreciation for fine wine. This was a beautifully serious cake with a sprinkle of personality and humor. The cake was staged on a grand piano covered in an ivory lamour table linen topped with a pearl embellished gold lace table runner. Professional lighting was used to highlight the cake’s display.”

Jeffrey Julia Woods Pre-Wedding Mother's Love

Again, from the bride’s mother …  Lieutenant Andrew Crawford is an Air Force F-16 fighter pilot. He injected his spirited personality and Air Force background in the form of the traditional fighter pilot tuxedo shirt. It is customary for some fighter pilots to remove the back and the sleeves of their tuxedo shirts and replace that fabric with a wild and crazy print. When the dress jacket is on,  what is seen is a white collar, shirt front, and cuffs. Once the jacket is removed, the sleeves and back POP with color and the party begins! Andrew selected a material reminiscent of the combination of a vintage aloha shirt print and a 1940’s pin up girl pattern. Betty Grable meets Waikiki! It was playful, colorful, and the perfect expression of Andrew’s  personality.

Jeffrey Julia Woods Bridal Party Fun

Ashley’s wedding color palette was based upon the rich raspberry hue of the bridesmaids’ gowns. (Just a quick sidenote – I had no idea there was a “p” in raspberry!)

Jeffrey Julia Woods Family Love Ashley Andrew

Do you see what I mean about Jeff and Julia’s photography? I feel like I was there!

Just as important to me (as a mom) is the groom’s expression when his bride walks toward him down the aisle … so is that shot of daddy’s little princess as they dance their dance.

Wedding Reception Ashley Andrew Jeffrey Julia Woods

I’m quite sure that the groom’s mom feels the same way about her dance with her charming little prince!

The Country Club of Peoria was transformed into a posh party venue, thanks to Beth Maxwell of  Save The Date and event coordination by Cloud Nine Weddings of Chicago.

At this point, it would have been much easier to list these boards as numbers rather than roman numerals, BUT…xxxiv is our last inspiration board! If yours didn’t make it up, and you got it in by January 21st and had all of your credits listed, shoot me an email and I’ll get it up asap.

Here is our last entry by Corbin…

From Corbin…

In thinking about using raspberry and white as a starting point, I like the idea of fading a pale pink into the florals to create a sort of transition from the darker rose to white.  Using a natural fibered linen acts as a subtle backdrop and gives a little bit of dimension against the white tones so they pop from the table settings.  I love complimenting a new gown with vintage touches – antique ring boxes, a gorgeous piece of embroidered fabric turned into a ring pillow, or a soft floral headpiece.  To me, shabby chic says texture and layering fabrics, working off of an antique vase, even wearing a gown with lace or beaded details works well with this aesthetic.  I hope you enjoy the board.

Our next two boards are by Yelena…

shabby chic inspiration board

The first board features the raspberry color prominently in different shades for a warm, rich feel. I also incorporated a cream color to add depth to the palette of red and white. The unusual cake, adorable changes of shoes and ruby sparkling wine add cute unexpected details to the day.

Here is Yelena’s second submission…

shabby chic inspiration board

For the second submission, I introduced navy into the raspberry and white color scheme. I think the navy adds richness and prep to the feel of the wedding, and pairs beautifully with pinks. I chose the pearl necklace with navy ribbon to bring in a vintage vibe, which the bride mentioned she would like. Unexpected details include the navy satin shoes, pearl necklace with a twist, vibrant seating chart and favor baskets with shortcake and strawberries, which I thought were a cute, quaint favor for an outdoor wedding.

From Vicki…

When I think of shabby chic, I think of soft muted colors, gold, aged furniture, and crystals. With the vineyard as a beautiful backdrop I incorporated colors of nature with wood tones and touches of green allowing the vibrant raspberry and crisp white to shine. The brides preppy side can be reveled with striped accent pillows or fabric.  My inspiration board began with a beautiful photo of raspberry colored flowers by Ariella Chezar, simply chic dresses from J Crew, and wonderful gold jewelry.

The Raspberry Cheesecake with white chocolate, from Owlishly / Rsspberry Lemonade from Diana’s Desserts / Summer sangria from Old Orchard / Wine glass charms from Red4Short’s Etsy shop / Maggy London Silk Chiffon Halter Dress from Nordstrom online / Pink & White plates from Note Songs / Wine barrel as cake stand from Scott Anderson Photography’s blog / Wine labels as table numbers from Julia Williams Photography / Waverly Spotswood Stripe Sateen Celery from Joann.com

More ideas from Renny…

– Use vintage pink & white plates. Perhaps as plates for the desserts, serving plates, underplates or bread plates, rather than what the guests use (there could be quite a few courses!).

– For a fun *and yummy* cake, Raspberry cheesecake with a fluffy white chocolate topping.

– It will be warm, so cool everyone down with raspberry lemonade or sangria.

– Use wine decanters to serve drinks on the tables and gives a nod to the wine theme. You could have a competition where guests can win a decanter to take home.

– Red4Short’s Etsy shop makes custom wine charms, so you could turn these into favors for the guests, while helping them to keep track of their drinks. Put your names or insignia on the back and a pattern on the front. If you want to get really special, have each guest’s name put on their very own charm with your insignia on the front!

– Wine labels carefully pulled from bottles can work as your table numbers.

– Perhaps use wine barrels as table supports or as a cake stand.

– Finish the whole look off in a clean and preppy way with a fabric runner or table cloth that will make all these detail pop out! I chose a nice clean green and white stripe to put the focus on the pinks and lemonade colors of the table decorations. To make it truly shabby chic, use a mix and match variety of vintage fabrics in various shades of green.

Our next fabulous entry is by Mina…

Here are some thoughts from Mina...

Cupcake- I love the simple cupcakes like these ones which are simple to make and affordable. In addition, it is cute to make simple vanilla cupcake and put a little raspberry on top. In addition, you can think about other things like raspberry jam, tarts, and sorbet. Alternatively, with white wine you can put a little raspberry cube for flavor.

The card (setting) – It is easy to make for all you need are a stack of cards and labels. Also, pin it to a wooden white washboard.

Girl in White Dress- So whimsical and beautiful dress. Also I love the rosette around her head

Kissing Tree- I thought this was really whimsical and charming. If there is a big tree, just put a sign on it and it can be a perfect place to that pictures.

Bicycles- Romantic and chic. It is like a scene from a romantic movie. All you need is to tie some flowers onto a bike and add a sign. Absolute perfection

Keep Calm and Carry on- a beautiful simple piece of work. I changed the color so it would match. It can be a neat guest gift. Just put it in a simple white frame and tie a gorgeous bow.

Radishes- I just added this because of the gorgeous color scheme

Calligraphy- Something every wedding could have. It is piece of art. I love it on a raspberry tone paper with white ink.

Carnations Bouquet- Really inexpensive flower but together looks marvelous with a simple white sash. Your bridesmaid can hold possibly a white bouquet of carnations. Other flowers that are wonderful during this time of season and in this shade of colors are anemone, dahlia, spray roses, and roses.

Feather- Really whimsical and I love the French label on it, it looks so fancy. Just add one into a beautiful glass vase with some raspberry carnations and it is a great place setting. Or one under a napkin can be a perfect for people to find their names.

A woman in Pink Dress- It looks so retro yet so modern and classic. I think ruffles are so pretty! I love the simple makeup, white pearl earrings, and classic dress. Pick out some cute shoes to match too. For your bridesmaid, you can allow them to pick a range of tones from raspberry pink to pastel pink.

The maze- I look it because it is so clean cut and sophisticated

The main picture- It may look to trendy however it is quite simple design. I love the simple white/gray dress under the pile of beautiful raspberry rosettes. In addition, I love the balloons, which are inexpensive and can light up a wedding. I really like the big balloons that can be tied each table.

Okay, we are kicking off the last day of our inspiration board contest! I have loved the entries so far and I know that deciding on a winner is going to be ridiculously hard. If I didn’t have photo credits for the board that you sent, or you sent yours after the cut-off date, I sadly won’t be able to feature it. BUT, I will hold on to those and will enter them into our next contest.

So, without further ado, our first board for today was designed by Maddy…

Flower Bucket : theknot.com, Flowers in Pedestal Vase: mimi-design.com, Invitations: oslopress.com, Mushroom Bird: theknot.com (I’ve seen these available for purchase at Michael’s), Lanterns: estiloweddings.com, Outside Lighting and Styling : theknot.com Distressed Pedestal Table : target.com

The overall look is “Modern Day Rustic” – distressed white washed tins and woods for a little bit of a shabby chic feel, with a contemporary color pop.

The aisles are lined with colorful pink flowers in vintage white tins with mild distressing, and the floral centerpieces are all flower – no greenery – in classic ceramic pedestal vases. Little pink mushroom birds can be integrated into the favors or onto vintage white painted metal bird cages (at Ebay or save-on-crafts.com). The white distressed pedestal table, paired with a pretty floral centerpiece, could serve as an excellent favor or place card table. White tin lanterns can be used to light up the tables in the evening.

SMP Loves…Red Light Studio

And their ridiculously adorable custom cake toppers! I’ve seen some cute toppers along the way, but these are just too much. Handcrafted and hand painted just for you, these adorable little accoutrements would add the perfect touch of whimsy to an otherwise traditional cake. So super cute.

GetMarried with Colin Cowie!

Turns out that Colin Cowie is the new host of one of my favorite wedding programs, GetMarried. I was interviewed by GetMarried a while back and ever since then, I’ve been addicted.
