Venice, California Engagement Session from Ashley Kelemen Photography

Some days I can be a bit of a plain Jane in the wardrobe department. Opting for “safe” over “stylish” in fear my fashion risk will flop. But today, I’m taking cues from this California bride-to-be. She’s got style for miles and can rock a stripey dress like you wouldn’t believe. So let’s ditch the stretchy yoga pants and indulge in this fashion-heavy e-sesh from Ashley Kelemen Photography, shall we?

From Ashley Kelemen PhotographyAllison & Justin live in downtown Venice, CA, so we met up to explore the area for their engagement session. We explored Abbot Kinney, visiting their favorite haunts and the places where they fell in love. These two are an incredible pair: Allison is a groundbreaking entrepreneur in the fashion industry, plus she and Justin make music together.

Date Night Idea: Thai Turkey Burgers

My boyfriend and I go through phases where we’re on a dating roll, trying out new things on a constant basis, or repeating the same activities day in and day out. Ah, the dating rut – it happens! I’m thinking we should take a note from sweet Mekenzee & Lee and instill Thai Tuesdays! One night a week dedicated to spending time with your loved one, cooking up something fierce in the kitchen? Now this is something I can happily get on board with! Captured by Rachel Havel, there’s more right here!

From Rachel… Meet Mekenze & Lee. They say that opposites attract and in this case it’s true! Tall, dark, & handsome, meets pretty, petite and blonde – and the rest is history. This adorable couple has recently started a little tradition of “Thai Tuesdays”, where they whip up some tasty Thai food together. This couple has a bit of the “foodie” bug in them, so their Thai burgers are nothing short of delicious.

After their meal, they usually head over to their newest favorite coffee spot, the Black Eye. As self-proclaimed coffee snobs, no other coffee shop would do!

How much do you adore Mekenze & Lee? After reading about this adorable date night I had a hankering for some Thai burgers myself. I stumbled across How Sweet It Is’ version and, honestly, they were nothing short of delicious!

cook time

total time
30 Minute/s
Serves 4Ingredients
  • 1 pound 94% lean ground turkey
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 4 whole wheat buns, toasted
  • FOR THE SAUCE
  • 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup lite canned coconut milk
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 garlic cloves, pressed or finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon-sized knob of ginger, grated
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1/2 tablespoon soy sauce
  • FOR THE SLAW
  • 2 cups chopped napa cabbage
  • 3/4 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped peanuts
Instructions
  1. Start by making the sauce by combining all ingredients in a bowl and whisking until smooth.
  2. Scoop out about 1/4 cup of the sauce and set it aside.
  3. Place the remaining mixture in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Once it reaches the boiling point, reduce to a simmer and cook for 4 minutes until mixture begins to thicken. Set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey with the salt, pepper, sliced green onions, chopped shredded carrots and about 2-3 tablespoons of the 1/4 cup of sauce that you set aside.
  5. Mix until just combined, being careful not to over mix.
  6. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil then quickly form the patties one at a time, placing them in the skillet. Cook for 4-5 minutes, until edges begin to brown. At this point, the burgers should be easy to flip.
  7. Flip and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes
  8. To make the slaw, toss the cabbage, carrots, cilantro and peanuts in 4 tbsp of the reduced thai sauce until coated.
  9. Place each burger on a bun and top with a heaping spoonful of the slaw and additional sauce if desired.

A Modern Cinderella Inspired Photo Shoot from Anza Foto + Film

This photo shoot had me at hello.  Well actually it had me at lush florals from Sweet Marie Design, fab stylings from Sweet Revelry Events and a whole lot of pretty from some of San Diego’s finest vendors, but you get the point.  I am thoroughly obsessed.  Add in a breathtaking (+ sophisticated) US Grant location, an amazing “modern Cinderella” theme and one glorious image after another captured by ANZA foto + film and you can call this the world’s best Wednesday.  See it all right here in the full gallery.

And a beautiful film from Cloudless Weddings for even more pretty.  Enjoy, lovelies. xo

From ANZA foto + filmWhile most San Diego weddings bring a beach ceremony to mind, we wanted to showcase the more refined side of our city. The US Grant Hotel made the perfect backdrop for a Cinderella tale. Our team of vendors set out to create a fantasy world where the modern working woman could be transformed into a fairytale princess, if only for a day. We chose an old Hollywood look for our model Katie and her real-life Prince Charming, Mitch. This style complimented the Eve of Milady dress and Justine M Couture jewels.

The Crystal Ballroom at The US Grant was softly lit by candles and the most decadent chandeliers. Overall, the feel of the reception was refined elegance with whimsical, vintage touches.  The tablescape was layered with textured linen and a bustled overlay that was gathered with trailing ribbon that pooled onto the floor. Lush florals, vintage china, etched glassware and couture lace napkins gave the table a luxurious and feminine feel. Each place setting was adorned with an oversized scroll menu, adding a playful and whimsical touch. The fanciful cake was certainly fit for a fairy tale with trailing flowers and ribbon detail. This day showcases that San Diego weddings can be a sophisticated, polished affair!

Illinois Wedding at The Stonegate from Evan Hunt Photo

I always get a tad bit excited when I see a wedding from Evan Hunt Photo pop up in our submissions. And I’ll tell you why – I can stare at each individual image for longer than I care to admit, and when the entire wedding comes together? I basically surrender my entire day to devouring all the pretty. It’s safe to say he has a way with the camera, and when you pair that talent with a wedding this gorgeous – magic happens. See it all here.

From Evan Hunt… Brittney & Kyle’s love is big, and I’m not sure if I can do it justice with words. However, Kyle sent us a note shortly after the engagement session that he wanted to share on their wedding website with family and friends. I will allow his words to do the talking instead of mine…

From the Groom… All of our hopes were met and surpassed by the outpouring of love we received from our family and friends, and we cannot thank them enough.

If I had to summarize our wedding day in one phrase, I would overlook all the little details and simply take a lyric from the greatest love song ever written:

“I have found the one my soul loves.” – Song of Solomon 3:4

Maroma Beach Wedding from Bride & Joy + Canteiro

I love Summer in Vegas.  A lot.  But when the heat (and random humidity) get to be a bit much, I long for the crisp, cool ocean breeze like it’s no one’s business.  Lucky for me (and you), this Maroma Beach affair is hitting all of those toes-in-the-sand, drink in hand sweet spots with a colorful celebration planned to absolute perfection by Canteiro.  It’s beach chic pretty meets one seriously fun party and you can see it all captured by Bride & Joy right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride… For my wedding I wanted a big party, and I wanted it to last multiple days so we decided destination was the way to go! We travel down to Mexico a lot, so it only made sense to have the wedding down there. We were so lucky to be able to have the wedding at the gorgeous Maroma Hotel & Spa. The place is magical: the most beautiful beach, private, best service, amazing food, and wonderful people. I cannot say enough good things about this place and I think you can see how beautiful it is from the pics (but it is even prettier in person).

I wanted everyone to feel apart of the wedding so we wanted it to be small, 95 guests! It was the perfect amount, my husband and I went out of state for college and we both still have friends from Kindergarten, so we had a large wedding party, which we loved! I modeled in NYC after college so I was lucky to fly in a friend who is a photographer, Kim Nicholais of Bride & Joy. She did an amazing job of capturing moments– I didn’t want a lot of staged pictures. The night of our wedding we had a full moon which lit up the sand, it was gorgeous! The day was clear and sunny, we couldn’t have had a better day!

The wedding itself was on the beach barefoot, with a Harpist (Albino Garcia) — and not a long ceremony. Then we headed to cocktail hour on the grass off the beach, then dinner on the patio off the beach, dance floor set up right on the beach below the stars. We danced until 2am then had a bonfire on the beach and continued to party at Freddy’s bar until the wee hours. Unforgettable, so fun!

I am into fashion and hence I chose strong colors that walked the runway before my wedding mint/seafoam green, blush, baby blue (also because my husband and I both went to Carolina). I wanted an all lace dress and haven’t seen many halters so I was excited when I found mine at the Little White Dress in Denver!

The wedding planner did an amazing job of bringing my colors into the flowers and making the decorations incorporate my beach theme, with starfish and shells. They also did a good job of keeping the decorations simple and clean which I wanted. The other thing I decided I wanted was a tequila shot cake. Since we already had a delicious dessert with our dinner, I thought it would be fun to pile up tequila shots with a bride and groom on top. We then proceeded to bring a tray of shots to each table and all cheer with the shot. It was different and I hope memorable, it def started off the party in the right way! Our gifts to our guests was a bottle of Tequila, Clase Azul.

I wore a cross necklace handed down from generation to generation. I designed custom necklaces for my bridesmaids. Some of the girls are wearing their one of a kind MKaltenbach necklaces. I am a jewelry designer so I made each girl a necklace made of blush pearls, mint opal and a starfish pendant to remind them of my wedding! I do custom designs for a lot of weddings, the bride can work with me to create an amazing one of a kind gift for their bridesmaids that reflects the colors and themes of their wedding!

Austin Wedding at The Blanton Art Museum from Ashley Garmon Photographers

Yesterday I was having a day Murphy could probably base his entire law on – everything that could possibly go wrong, did. But then this pretty designed by Bird Dog Wedding and captured by Ashley Garmon landed in my lap, and immediately, all was right with the world again. Because, really, how could you not just throw all your cares away when looking at a wedding like this? It’s so gorgeous, so full of life and love, so jammed-packed with stylish details – it’s a wedding that will make you forget Murphy and his silly law ever existed, and it’s all sitting pretty right here.

Whimsical

From the Bride… My wedding was special because there were actually two. I’m Vietnamese American and my fiance is…a ginger. Unsurprisingly, my mother had been dreaming of a traditional Vietnamese wedding for me since I was little girl. To accommodate my family, we had two distinct ceremonies: one Vietnamese-style in Houston and one Western/American in Austin.

Since the American wedding was the one for us, I’ll focus on it and what made it so Phantastic. Nearly all the details and designs were hand-crafted by me, or my bridesmaids and close friends. First, I hand-lettered our invitations, and with the help of a graphic designer friend was able to vectorize the writing and fashion our logo. I designed the programs and watercolor-lettered the place cards, dessert table backdrop, and guest book.

We plan on framing this art-piece-as-guest-book poster in our new apartment. While I can admit I’d rarely thumb through an actual book, I love that I’ll be able to read well wishes every day.

An advantage (the only advantage?) of having two weddings is that I actually used the first experience to prepare for the second and learned valuable lessons, both logistical and otherwise, to improve the Austin wedding. Chris’ wedding ring was designed by a good friend of mine, Katy Skelton, who is a furniture designer based in Brooklyn. We worked with two designer friends Samuel Thibault and Corey Marquart on our www.chrisphantastic.com website.

It was very important for me to be able to brand our wedding and document images of the process leading up to and including the big day on social media like Instagram and Twitter (#phantasticwedding). And as a creative person by nature, I wanted everything to match and to be handmade – and with limited financial assistance from our families, this was often a necessity. As you can see, I love colors, especially bright ones. To go with all the personal, DIY touches, we had a friend of ours officiate the wedding (our definitely-Jewish but also-internet-ordained friend Emily did an amazing job!)

We also did a few silly and a few cultural things. I secretly planned for a lion dance for our grand entrance. The Texas Dragon Dance team promised us two dragons with a hope that they MIGHT be able to swing a third. As providence would have it, the third lion was arranged and was bright orange – the color of the hair of the groom.

We had krazy name straws for the bridal party – a huge hit. Chris and his friends are devoted fans of Lone Star beer and it was great seeing people gracefully sipping the cheap Texas brew out of personalized straws. Production was limited to only 5 letters, so abbreviating some of the names required some creativity. If funds had allowed, we’d have given each guest a straw. People are still talking about them 2 months later.

The truth is I had so many ideas that due to time and resource limitations, a lot of them weren’t able to come to fruition. But I love that so many people have come back to me after the wedding excitedly offering their favorite moments and it’s amazing how many different memorable aspects there were.

Sunday Brunch Elopement Photo Shoot from Laura Kelly Photography

You know what I love more than anything?  Brunch.  Well, brunch and one seriously drop-dead gorgeous wedding.  And when the two come together in one out-of-this-world photo shoot?  I go bananas in the best possible way.  Because, really, what’s better than layers upon layers of fab stylings by Kennedy Event Planning, a surprise wedding theme (!) and moment after glorious moment captured by Laura Kelly Photography?  Answer: absolutely nothing.  See it all right here in the full gallery.

From Laura Kelly Photography… I’m absolutely in LOVE with the images you’re about to see, but there’s a little backstory you’ll need to know before diving in. I think surprise weddings are going to be the new thing; I really do! People are loving the idea of getting married in their homes, saving a ton of money, and making their “wedding” all about the people, the love, and the marriage. So when it came time for Shannon Kennedy and I to work on a new project, we wanted to do something to reflect this future trend.  Instead of creating your typical wedding styled shoot, we created the concept of a beautiful couple who invite their two best friends over for a Sunday brunch, only to announce that they’re actually “eloping” and planning to exchange rings on that very day. A private wedding at home — just the way they’d want it. But of course this couple would want to take the time to make THIS brunch special — since it’s their wedding day and all! Only the finest treats and most delicious coffees would be served. And what’s a wedding without playing dress up with a friend? That’s why we wanted to have the girls dressed to the nines, and complete with stunning hairpieces and jewellery. This concept allowed us to work with a ton of freedom on things like food, paper goods, wardrobe, etc. And to challenge ourselves even further, we were going to do the whole thing without any. real. flowers. So hard to do!

Atlanta Biltmore Ballrooms Wedding from Artstar by Laura Stone

There is something so magical about a ballroom wedding. Don’t you agree? The gowns, the chandeliers, the elegance – it all tends to make me swoon. So when I come across a wedding like this one by Artstar by Laura Stone, I feel like I’ve hit the wedding jackpot. Because not only is it filled to the brim with lovely, but it’s also overflowing with love…and it doesn’t get better than that. See every gorgeous moment here.

From the Bride… We met at a mutual friend’s house at a party back in 2009, and then a couple of days later at a concert– where he said we would marry one day. I, of course laughed it off, and said he was crazy! We had a our first date at a Braves game, where again he got on one knee and had a mock proposal. We have been inseparable ever since.

Colby proposed on Christmas day 2011. We had talked about getting married earlier that year, and went and looked at rings a few times. Christmas came around and I thought it maybe would happen on or around Christmas. Christmas day came and we visited both sides of the family and soon it was ten o’clock at night (I was thinking, “Maybe next year.”) I went into our room to unpack our things because we were just settling into a new house. When I came out he had all the lights out and candles lit. He had a 3 Musketeers bar on the table, and I said, “What the heck is this? I am confused?” He started to talk about our lives together, and one of the first times of us meeting how he asked me to marry him, how “he meant it then and means it now”. The 3 Musketeers bar represented the movie, which had marry me on the back. The Holiday-our favorite movie at the time, which we watched ALL the time. Jude Law told his family that they are the 3 musketeers. “We are in our first home and soon our first child. I want us to be the three musketeers”. Of course I said yes.

Colby is very rare. He is the kindest person I have ever met. He tells me I am beautiful every day, even when I am not acting that way. We welcomed our first child in April of 2012. It was not easy having a newborn, going to school, and planning a wedding at the same time. Luckily I found an angel, my wedding planner, Nicole Fantz. She was a dream, and so was everyone who was part of our special day.

When we first looked at the Biltmore Ballrooms, we thought it was gorgeous — the architecture was amazing! I wanted a glamorous, white/clean, romantic feel for our wedding. I happened to spend a lot of time on Style Me Pretty, Etsy, and Pinterest. That is how I came across Style Me Pretty. I spent a lot of time on the web due to school and the baby…..and the fact that I was all the way in Phenix City.

We had a lot of special touches. I couldn’t even begin to say which one was my favorite! I LOVED the thank you note that we placed on every charger at each table setting. Loved our monogrammed “book signing” and our advice box-both from Etsy. My brother walking our son down the aisle in his Army Blues, and the dedication we had to all of the family members we have lost. Our food was amazing and we had Cake Pops wrapped in cellophane for our guests. Everyone that we worked with just played such a big part in all if it. I think they put in their special touches and made it what it was.

My favorite memory is probably how calm the whole weekend was. How you hear that all you see when you walk down the aisle is your future husband, and how very true that is. How unbelievably gorgeous the day was-flowers, lighting. THE BAND!!! Honestly, EVERYTHING continues to be a vivid memory from that day because of how absolutely beautiful and wonderful it was. I am still amazed. My favorite photos are the reception photos of Colby and me and our son. I really loved all of the detailed pictures as well. The slide show that Laura, our photographer made, was amazing. She really captured the whole day and night very well, enough to make the slide show as good as any video. I cry every time I watch it.

Great Cranberry Island Maine Wedding from Hailey Tash Photography

New England weddings rock.  That’s a tried and true fact.  But when you combine a sweet Cranberry Island setting with some of the most gorgeous details you have ever seen from Natalie Trento Events, it’s a new world of amazing.  One that features beautiful blooms from Sweet Pea Flowers, a crazy awesome tented reception and one lovely image after another from Hailey Tash Photography.  In other words, it’s BEYOND pretty and you can see every last moment right here in the full gallery.

From Hailey Tash PhotographyLaura grew up spending her summers on Great Cranberry Island in Maine, so she knew that she would marry Brendan there. It was the perfect Maine wedding with guests arriving by boat, Laura’s pearl necklace, flowing pale green bridesmaid gowns, and a pair of L.L. Bean boots tucked under a lacy white wedding gown on the rocky coast.

Bridesmaid and wedding planner, Natalie Trento, decorated cocktail hour with sea glass and the reception tent with matching bottles in different sea glass hues. There were pops of green and orange in the gorgeous centerpieces, and guests found their table setting with hand-painted rocks, including a special pair decorated with Maine lobster for the bride and groom.

Laura and Brendan set out to give their guests the ultimate Maine experience, and they topped it off with happiness and love.

Behind the Invitation: Aviation + Garden Party Suite from One Plus One Design

I can’t help but be in a cheerful mood after seeing the photos for our latest installment of Behind the Invitation! Tyler and Jessie from One Plus One Design are here today to tell us the story behind this sweet design. From the lovebirds, Jeff and Jen flying away in their getaway plane, to the map envelope liners and the bright color combo, the whole thing is perfectly adorable while staying true to the couple’s personalities. Keep reading for the story and see every last detail right here in the gallery!

The Vision: High school sweethearts Jen and Jeff were married in springtime in beautiful Assiniboine Park, Manitoba. The theme was garden party, and the couple emphasized that while bright and fun were the keys to their decorations, they wanted to combine these characteristics with a major theme in their lives — aviation. Jeff, who’s training to be a pilot in the Canadian military, has a self-proclaimed obsession with maps and indicated he’d like to see this brought into the design. Jen, who’s bright, cheerful personality can’t be missed, stated simply that she wanted to make sure that the design refrained from becoming too masculine, and that it reflected the flowers and colours of her day. We settled on a happy juxtaposition —  bright floods of colour and flowery details accented with a custom illustration of the couple flying away to their new life.

Standout Features: First and foremost, the letterpress printing. One of the key advantages to letterpress is that the inks are pure and bright, perfect for this suite. To accent the sunny yellow envelopes we included envelope liners of world maps, a subtle hint at the Royal Canadian Airforce roundel, and a postage-themed stamp indicating their future travels together, both business and pleasure.

Custom Services: We classify this suite as our 4-piece letterpress option, which includes the invitations and RSVPs, colour co-ordinated envelopes and custom labels. Rounding out the custom designed materials are the aforementioned envelope liners and custom stamp, as well as table numbers and favour packaging.

Burlington, Ontario Wedding from KJ & Co. + Elizabeth In Love

By now you’ve probably figured out I’m about as girly as it gets. Pink? Yes. Glitter? Of course. And polka dots? Duh! So when KJ & Co. sent over this pretty little number shot by Elizabeth In Love, I was on cloud nine, to say the least. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I found this: the wedding day photo gallery chock full of goodness all ripe for the pinning. Join me, won’t you?

From the Bride…As a wedding planner myself, I certainly felt the pressure to plan an amazing wedding, but I was determined for it to be a day that represented BOTH of us, not just everything I’d been hiding away on Pinterest. After our December 2, 2011, engagement we agreed to hold off on planning until the new year but I did ask Dave to sit down with me before that and look at some of the “inspiration” I had been saving, to make sure he was on board. Many of the pictures we both loved continued to be part of the inspiration for our theme over the next 18 months of planning.  More than anything, we were looking forward to celebrating with all of our friends and family in one place. It meant a lot to us that so many friends made the trip from across North America.

There were so many decisions to make! Some of them came more easily than others, but we stayed pretty true to the advice I give all my clients; pick details that are personal and meaningful, not what’s traditional or what you see everyone doing. If you love it, do it, trendy or not. I was looking forward to working with some vendors that I had been admiring for a while, and ordering up goodies from several of my fave Etsy shops. While I love all things vintage, it’s not Dave’s style. So a colourful, fun and fresh theme for the day was the best fit for both of us. The invitations were probably our first pick and inspired a lot of the other details. Planning such a colourful event was lots of fun and my mom’s help was unbelievable. Knowing a lot of the staff at Decor & More, where she is director of design and having worked with a lot of them over the years as well, I knew we were in good hands. They totally brought my vision to life. There were definitely categories that were a priority for us, and we invested in amazing photography and cinematography, but we saved by doing some DIY projects like the favours and programs. Not everything needs to be top of the line to be beautiful.

Being pretty sentimental, we chose a venue we visit often, knowing the food would be delicious and we could have our ceremony and reception in one place. Very early on, we asked a good friend of ours to play guitar for the ceremony. While our song choices were unusual (I walked down the aisle to Crazy Girl by Eli Young Band), Jay made such a beautiful arrangement of the music, they fit well. I had a hard time getting out of “planner-mode” the day of the wedding, but as soon as I heard the song playing, I started to cry. I was finally IN the moment.

We also decided early on that having a first look was the way to go. I expected to be pretty emotional the day of the wedding, and I hoped that getting to see Dave early on would calm my nerves. Also our entire wedding party would all get to spend more of the day together. Things worked out differently than expected when we got to the city park for our first look. I was so relieved and happy that it was FINALLY the wedding day after all the planning, that I was excited rather than nervous most of the morning. Dave on the other hand, always happy and laid back, was crying before he even turned around to see me. I had never seen him cry before!  Like I mentioned before about “planner-mode”, it was funny how as little hiccups throughout the day occurred, I just brushed them off. Rain in the forecast for most of the day? Oh well, set up the ceremony inside, no point fretting about it all day. Dave’s button popped as soon as I hugged him at the first look and I had decided not to bring my usual (huge) emergency kit, we never bothered to ask others for a needle and thread.

Not only do I hate surprises, I had put together a pretty lengthy itinerary for the day. There were not one, but TWO moments that everyone managed to keep a secret from me. As he finished his speech, Dave pulled me away from the podium as a grand piano was pushed in to the room. He had been taking secret piano lessons for six months in order to  play one of my favourite songs. Halfway through the song, I was crying uncontrollably when I realized that all of our guests were singing along and holding lyric sheets. I was dying to know who was in on the surprise and how they had planned all of it. I thought I knew every single detail of the day, since I had been eat-sleep-breathing it for a year and a half! Shortly after that, my brother and some family members surprised us with some old videos they had dug up of family vacations. When I look back on our wedding day, I’m in awe of the photos and our video, how they bring back all the love and emotions we (along with our family and friends felt). So much stress and hard work, but it was truly worth every grey hair and sleepless night to see and hear how much everyone enjoyed themselves and how everything came together for a day that was perfectly “us.”

Elderflower Cocktails from Monica Wang

Have you ever indulged in an elderflower cocktail? Because I fully and wholeheartedly believe that it will change your life. It’s subtle, it’s fresh, and you simply feel like a lady while sipping it. I’ve had it sprinkled throughout a number of different libations, but it never really occurred to me to whip one up for myself at home. That is, until now, thanks to Monica and her dangerously fabulous ideas.

From Monica… This is by far my favorite cocktail ever. I first had it at my sister’s wedding and after I had it once, I knew I had to recreate it at home for dinner parties and get togethers. It has the perfect hint of the floral notes from the elderflower and the lime juice perfectly balances the sweetness from the sugar. You can also swap out the gin for vodka depending on your preference. This one is very dangerous! Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Elderflower CocktailA light and refreshing cocktail that will definitely please a crowd.

Sera & Sean planned their NYC wedding from their home in Singapore. They were engaged during a hike in the hills of Hong Kong overlooking the South China Sea so when it came to their wedding they chose an equally magical place – the city they met and fell in love in – New York!

The challenge of planning a wedding from the other side of the world was made easier with the help of Ryder Sloan Events. Sera did what she could from Singapore, designing the invitations, programs and escort cards herself and sourcing local printers in Singapore. Her mother made her veil and the day before the wedding her family and bridal party banded together to create deep red centerpieces of peonies, astilbe and eucalyptus. All done on the floor of their Bowery Hotel suite. Sera’s mother studied flower arranging for months leading up to the wedding and created the immaculate bouquets and boutonnieres herself.

They married on an unseasonably warm November day, which allowed the couple and bridal party to do a fair bit of walking around Nolita, home of their venue, Michelin awarded Public Restaurant. It’s an intimate space with moody lighting, rich wood floors, exposed brick and a glass wall showcasing their wine collection.

After an incredible meal that included roast New Zealand venison loin, and pan-seared Tasmanian sea trout, and a serious of hilarious toasts, Sera & Sean dressed in traditional gowns for the Korean ceremony portion of the evening. Parents and family members took turns tossing nuts to the wedded couple to symbolize fertility. If the amount they caught is any indication, they can expect an overwhelming amount of children!

A festive photo booth by Jenny Jimenez and DJ Colleen from Sugartown Industries kept the party rolling and feet on the dance floor late into the night, including the obligatory Gangnam style get down!

Daytona Beach Shores Wedding from Monika Gauthier Photography

Oh how I adore a beach wedding. And a beach wedding with a bit of chic? Well, that is so up my alley. So this little seaside soiree captured by Monika Gauthier has my name written all over it. Each beautiful image paints the picture of a day that was not only gorgeous, but meaningful – and to me, it doesn’t get better than that. See it all here.

From Monica GauthierIt was a beautifully sunny day with a slight breeze at Daytona Beach Shores Resort & Spa. The guests arrived early for complimentary champagne while a string quartet played softly in the background. At six in the evening, Megan and Marc tied the knot on the resort’s terrace, overlooking the beach, surrounded by 80 of their closest family and friends. They were particularly happy that Marc’s family was able to make the trip from his home country of Poland to share their special moment. After the ceremony, the guests enjoyed a sunset cocktail hour of light hor devours and live jazz saxophone while the happy couple and their wedding party kicked off their heels and put their toes in the sand for some romantic pictures on the beach.

After dusting off the sugary white sand, the party headed upstairs to the resort’s Atlantic Room which boasts uninterrupted panoramic views of the ocean below. The tablescapes gave a nod to the venue with clusters of white coral, oyster shell votives and barnacle clusters tucked between small arrangements of white flowers in mercury glass. Dinner was then served, and the newly weds danced the night away with their guests.

Megan and Marc’s favorite moment of the whole day would have to be their first look moment. The bride and groom came downstairs on separate elevators, and when the doors opened and peeked their heads around the corner to see each other for the first time on their wedding day as captured by photographer Monika Gauthier.

Sedona Wedding from Aaron Delesie + Lisa Vorce + Mindy Rice

There’s this powerhouse duo that kills it in the wedding world. That designing and floral artistry twosome better known as Lisa Vorce and Mindy Rice have a way of creating the most magical affairs. The kind that transport you to a whole new world where everything from the paper goods to the teepees (see below) convey a sense of who the couple is and perfectly reflect the spot that they’ve chosen to host such a big day. Sedona is today’s spot and the beauty is in all the millions of details and in the killer imagery captured by Aaron Delesie. Have a look here for every last little bit.

From Lisa Vorce… The wedding took place at the wonderful Enchantment Resort in breathtaking Sedona, Arizona. So, so gorgeous! Our clients put an extraordinary amount of trust in us and let us do our thing, so Mindy and I had a blast. So much inspiration from the natural environment there. Starting with the Save the Date – we set the tone for what was to come. We partnered with Device Creative Collaborative who created the most amazing tipi save the date. One of my favorites!

For the wedding ceremony, our groom selected a spot in the middle of the secluded Boynton Canyon. Surrounded by red-rock formations, it was simply breathtaking. Mindy created an enormous hand woven dream catcher ceremony structure – embellished with feathers and wood beading inspired by the colors of the surrounding earth. The bride carried a beautiful organic bouquet composed of eucalyptus, garden roses, hellebores, millet, bunny tail, euphorbia, spray roses, and feathers. For the petal toss – guests were given gilded leather pockets embellished with native stone beads – filled with micah and a variety of soft feathers.

At the cocktail hour, a friend of the bride made a beautiful dream catcher as a gift. We had die cut feathers made in the wedding colors, and had each guest write a message to the bride and groom and then hang their “message feathers” on the dream catcher. So cute!

For the dinner reception in the ballroom, we brought in a truss structure and had the most incredible “tufted” ceiling created. The walls were draped in a beautiful plumy taupe fabric, and twenty-four foot dinner tables showcased loosely woven linens, mother of pearl flatware, stone washed lavender napkins, petite “booklet” menus which also functioned as place cards (each guest’s name was calligraphed on the cover of the booklet), tufted gold mercury glass candles, and hand thrown pottery housing collections of bleached feathers. For the centerpieces, Mindy created the most beautiful combination — wooden vessels holding feathers, sterling silver and prelude roses, eucalyptus, succulent blossoms, and astilbe. Gorgeous!

Other fun dinner reception details included lounge vignettes detailed with moroccan wedding blankets, ethnic punched tin lanterns and and metallic taupe pillows. Each lounge vignette had petite wood containers with metallic bon bons in silver, purple, lavender, and plum. Was such a fun detail!

Sedona was the perfect peaceful environment for our genuinely kind and sweet clients. An amazing celebration of their love and we were so happy to be a part of it.

SMP Editor Stephanie Weers’ Chic Apartment Tour

I always get so anxious when we’ve got a full day filled with goodies and we have to wait until the LAST post to see the full reveal. We are such teases, aren’t we?! But we couldn’t not fill you in on all that DIY goodness. Our DIYer went to town this time around and the gold-leafed art, the gallery wall, the tray and that incredible desk were just too good to leave out. But I promise you that Stephanie’s adorable apartment was well worth the wait. One look at Ruth Eileen’s photos and I have faith you’ll swoon alongside us. Don’t miss the “before” pics of the living room, kitchen, & office– you won’t believe the transformation!

From Stephanie… I think we can all agree city apartments have their quirks. Whether it’s some outdated tile or a major lack of space, there’s always a design challenge or two to work around. But after living in a “garden level” apartment (AKA, a basement) for our first six months in the city, I knew one thing for darn certain: I wanted our next space to feel extra light, bright, open yet cozy. A little space in the city to truly felt like our own.

With that inspiration in mind, we went for lots of white-on-white elements, and a few pops of color thrown in along the way. High up on the room re-design list was the office. As a work-from-home SMPer, my office is my ultimate place of inspiration. My girly little nook. The room I spend hours on end writing, editing and dreaming up ideas every week. So it had to be special. Feminine, yet sophisticated. Functional, yet fun. And thanks to some easy peasy DIYs and a little touch of gold, I’m happy to say, mission accomplished.

The office is right off of the living room, so it was important to feel a cohesive “flow” from one room to another. Keeping that in mind, we kept it super neutral and light with touches of gold tying the two spaces together. The result? A sort of beach-cottage-meets-city-glam. And I wholeheartedly love it.

Remember those apartment quirks I was talking about? Well, our kitchen and bedroom are chock-full of those. But thankfully we were able to design around our mustard yellow kitchen tiles and not-so-pretty bedroom walls. With a big ol’ splash of white and accessories that added a layer of lovely, both spaces transformed from completely simple to something special.

Gold Leafed Ikea Desk Hack

Bold statement alert: this is my favourite DIY we’ve ever featured on SMP Living. That says a lot considering there are a number of them that have completely knocked me off my feet. But I would pay big bucks for this gorgeous gilded number in a high end store. The best part? With just a little elbow grease, you can do the whole thing for virtually nothing! Ah, Ikea hacks – how I love thee.

Materials IKEA Vika Gruvan desk with trestle legs
Adhesive size Gold leaf (4 packets)
Glue brush Painter’s tape 2” foam brush
Paint brush
Clear acrylic spray

instructions step-1 Remove the glass top of the desk. Use painter’s tape to outline the edges of the trays.

step-2 Use the foam brush to paint adhesive size on one tray, including the sides. Let dry 15 mins, until tacky.

step-3 Press the gold leaf on the tray until it is covered entirely. Repeat steps 2 & 3 on the other tray. Press more gold leaf onto any missed spots and use the paint brush to remove any excess leaf.

step-4 Spray two light coats of clear acrylic spray to seal the gold leaf. Remove the painter’s tape and place the glass top back on your desk. Enjoy your fabulously luxe new desk!

From the glowing bride… My husband Jason and I had been dating for almost ten years before we finally decided to get married, so our wedding was a very special time in our life. Very much like our personalities and styles, we wanted our wedding to embody a classic and lighthearted elegance. It also had to feel effortlessly romantic! We chose pink, green and gold as our wedding colors gold is a lucky color in my Chinese culture and green and pink are our favorite colors. I also have a fondness for pink as it was often mistaken for my Chinese name (Pheng, pronounced Ping) when I was little! The colors perfectly complimented our June wedding, as well as the beautiful Spanish bricks and wooden artifacts of our venue, the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. We both love art and the museum, with its Asian influence (Jason is half Japanese, I am Chinese), was able to accommodate our wedding of over 200 guests!

My background in ballet and fashion design greatly influenced the fabrics for our wedding. I love texture and anything airy. My wedding dress, made of lace appliqués and tulle, had illusion rosettes throughout the bottom of the skirt. The bridesmaids wore chiffon gowns and our adorable flower girl wore a dress reminiscent of a tutu! For our reception, we had satin pintuck linens. I accented our sweetheart table chairs with chiffon sashes made by me.

To keep with the romantic and elegant feel we choose blooms like peonies, ranunculus, garden roses, polo roses, freesia, mini roses, lisianthus, hydrangeas, astilbe, and dusty miller for our florals. Metallic pearlescent cardstock were used for our programs, menus, table numbers, escort cards and signs to add a feel of elegance among the museum’s artifacts. All the paper goods for our wedding were designed and made by me. Many hours were spent cutting paper and tying bows for our large guest list!

Having grown up with a family owned business, I tried to be conscious of choosing small and independent vendors. I actually found our photographer (Mirelle Carmichael), florist (Commerce Flowers), makeup artist (All Made Up), and my veil (custom by Crowning Glory Designs) through Style Me Pretty! Each one of our vendors were amazing to work with. They made the whole planning process such a memorable time!

Our main focus during our planning stages was our guests. We wanted them to make sure they left with a full stomach and enjoyed themselves! We had late night appetizers of sliders and warm sandwiches passed around an hour before our reception ended and a photobooth that was open all evening. We also had around 30 children guests. I made gift bags filled with a DIY wedding activity book, crayons, and toys for them. We also had several party packs of bi-colored glowsticks (which could be made into bracelets, earrings, sunglasses, balls, and more) for the kids but a lot of the adults joined in the glowstick fun as well!

One of my favorite parts of the wedding was the ceremony. I remember waiting in the bridal suite, so nervous, yet when I saw my almost-husband waiting at the end of the aisle all I could do was focus on him with a huge smile on my face. We wrote most of the ceremony ourselves, incorporating certain scripts from various faiths into it, all the while keeping it very genuine and us. We also wrote our own vows and I cried through most of them. Jasons Uncle, an ordained Reverend, officiated the ceremony and his mother did a reading during a handfasting ceremony we included. His mother started crying halfway through her reading and I saw Jason start to tear up as well (It is very hard to watch your mother cry, even if it is tears of joy, he says.) It was such a touching, meaningful ceremony to all of us. We did a choreographed jazzy foxtrot as our First Dance to kickstart the reception and it was a fun segway into a night filled with laughs and memories shared with the people we loved the most.

DIY Gold Zig Zag Tray

In my humble opinion, one can never have enough trays. I honestly couldn’t even count how many I have laying around corralling various objects of all shapes and sizes. They add instant class to any ol’ room, especially when they’ve been decked out in a hint of gold. So, naturally, that’s just what we did. And we’ve got the full how-to just for you!

Materials

White tray of your choice (we got ours from Target and painted it white)
Adhesive size
Gold leaf
Glue brush
1” Painter’s tape
Paint brush
Clear acrylic spray

instructions
step-1 Use the masking tape to draw out a V shape on the bottom of the tray, about halfway across the tray. Repeat that shape parallel to the first, keeping the width of the space between the tape the same as the width of the tape. Keep repeating until you get to the end of the tray. On the second half of the tray, lay out sets of masking tape stripe shapes, at different angles than the V shapes.

step-2 Paint the bottom of the tray with adhesive size. Let dry 15 mins, or until tacky to the touch.

step-3 Press sheets of gold leaf on the tray until it is covered. If you miss any spots, just press excess scraps of leaf on until they are covered. Use the paintbrush to press the gold leaf on and brush off the excess.

step-4 Gently remove the masking tape and brush off any flakes. Spray two light coats of acrylic spray to seal the leaf.
