Santa Rosa Wedding from Sylvie Gil Photography

Have you ever come across a wedding that you just want to live in for the rest of your days? I have a few times over but this wedding right here; it just might be my soulmate. Every beautifully planned detail by Rebecca Reategui Weddings, all those peachy garden roses and trailing vines by Max Gill Flowers, the almost-looks-like-a-really-amazing-backyard backdrop of Annadel Estate Winery; it’s pure heaven in nuptial form. And the only thing that could possibly make it dreamier is all the beauty captured by Sylvie Gil Photography. Have a look at the full gallery right here.

From the Bride…One of the few things that Conor and I knew when we began to plan our wedding was that we wanted the celebration to feel natural and welcoming for our guests.  We cherish our families’ long-standing tradition of casual Sunday night dinners, and we loved the idea of bringing a warm, familial and relaxed feel to our wedding celebration.

The two easiest decisions were made right away: First, we brought Rebecca Reátegui onto our team to help us make the planning process enjoyable, create a seamless design that reflected us, and allow us total relaxation on the wedding day.  Second was to hire the band Pride and Joy, who we knew would create a fun party atmosphere for the reception.  (Later, to complement Pride and Joy, we decided to add a duo of fiddlers for the cocktail hour music – we loved the casual, laid-back bluegrass vibe while guests enjoyed beers from a salvaged wood trough beer station!)

Rebecca introduced us to Annadel Estate Winery, a historic piece of land, which, in addition to its vineyards, boasts an expansive English rose garden and an incredible set of ruins from the original distillery on the grounds.  Beautiful, giant old oak trees canopy the whole property, and a small creek runs along the area where we held the ceremony.   It was the perfect backdrop for our casually elegant décor.  We loved the contrast of the more rustic elements, such as the wood chairs, farm tables, and hemp linens with Max Gill’s gorgeous, relaxed florals that added the perfect amount of understated elegance.  I had worked with Max for years at Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, where Max does the flowers and I am a chef.  Max is truly a genius with flowers; creating the most stunning pieces using locally sourced foliage like blackberry vines and persimmons, and of course roses from Annadel.  As a chef, food is incredibly important to me.  I was able to collaborate closely with the team at Paula LeDuc Fine Catering to design the perfect menu, inspired by my Sunday night family dinners, and served family-style.   I loved the atmosphere of guests chatting and laughing over delicious food.

My family and I enjoy craft projects, and we wanted to put our own handmade stamp on several elements of the wedding to give the event a very personal touch. Rebecca and our stationery designer, Janèl Claire, helped us to design several “DIY” projects that my parents, sister and I then executed.  For example, we sewed the save-the-date envelopes and also the individual program pockets that were affixed to the backs of each ceremony chair.   To complement the large wire letters that we used to mark each dinner table, we created small wire letters by hand, embroidered them to each escort card. We hand-embroidered a heart, echoing our save-the-date card design, on each burlap favor bag. And finally, my dad and I built 4′ tall “L” + “C” letters out of wood that we salvaged from our backyard gate.

All of these details were captured beautifully by our photographer, Sylvie Gil. Sylvie gave us stunning pictures from every part of the day, and Conor and I were able to enjoy our wedding without feeling like it had to be interrupted for photographs. The day was truly a success because of the collaborative effort by many talented individuals who listened to our vision and made it come to life. I realized during the planning process that the wedding was going to be inherently original because it was ours, and by working with the right team and trusting their talents, the day would perfectly reflect Conor and me – casual, warm, and most of all fun! We accomplished our goal of a wedding that was unique and very “us.”

Best Dressed Blogger: Girlcrush

Sarah and I actually attended the same high school and the same university for a brief moment in time. We both knew of each other but never really formed a friendship for whatever reason. Fast forward to eight years later, Sarah now lives on the west coast, me on the east, and we somehow stumbled upon each other via the wonderful world of blogging. With a few back and forth email exchanges, we become fast friends and the rest, as they say, is history. I couldn’t be more excited for you to “meet” her today. Her blog, Girlcrush, is a go-to for me and shortly you’ll see exactly why.

A statement necklace is a must-have jewelry piece for me. It’s great with a dress or blouse, but my favourite way to wear mine is overtop a pullover sweater.

A pair of neutral booties. I can’t live without them! They go with everything and I love the added height they give me, while still being comfortable.

I love a simple silk dress. They can easily be dress it up with heels or stay casual with booties and a scarf. I wear mine all year round.

Leopard print is my go-to print for fall. I like it best as an accessory, maybe as a great bag or a pair of cute heels.

The perfect pair of jeans! There’s nothing better than finding a fits-like-a-glove pair. For me? It’s the Citizens of Humanity “Avedon” jeans.

Boca Grande Wedding from Vitalic Photo

If we’re being totally honest here, I’ve never actually heard of Boca Grande (I know, shameful being a Gulf Coast resident myself), but after this gorgeous wedding it’s pretty much top of my vacation list right now. Vitalic Photo’s images of the day are something out of a dream – a really bright and happy dream – and they have totally convinced me to pack my flip flops and go!

From the photographer… Erin Leigh Littrell and Matthew David Turner’s destination wedding in Boca Grande was the perfect intimate affair on a July summer night. With most of their family and guests being from Oklahoma, the island was full of golf carts zipping around to the ceremony and reception. The quaint Baptist church and Gasparilla Inn Beach Club provided the perfect venues for a Florida West Coast wedding.

Citrus Inspired Photo Shoot from Anna Delores Photography

This citrus-inspired shoot is a little lesson in color. The takeaway here? Layering bright, like-minded hues is a complete and total “do.” Add in the talents of Vanessa Noel EventsKissing Bees and Alissa Bell Press, and you’ll be left with quite possibly the prettiest, peppiest lovefest EVER. See every colortastic detail from Anna Delores Photography right over here.

From Anna Delores PhotographyVanessa of Vanessa Noel Events in Bakersfield, CA was initially inspired by watercolor art in bright pops of pink and orange.  Ideas for a summery, citrus-inspired wedding design weren’t far behind. Vanessa, along with Emily from Anna Delores Photography, worked to create a number of DIY accents for this shoot, including a hand-painted watercolor table runner, gold-dipped centerpiece vases, watercolor placecards, a ribbon backdrop for the ceremony, and spray-painted orange bentwood chairs.  A wooden farm table, colorful florals by Kissing Bees, and custom letterpress invitations by Alissa Bell complete this effervescent design. The shoot took place at a private estate in Bakersfield in the central California valley, captured by Anna Delores Photography.

Backyard Wedding from Mark & Kara Photography

Of the million different places perfect for saying “I do,” backyard weddings are (and always will be) one of my favorites.  It’s the sense of intimacy and coziness that always seems to burst from a backyard wedding that gets me… the feeling of “hominess” that just can’t be replicated elsewhere.  And this darling day styled to absolute perfection by Jessica Coleman is just that.  A drop-dead gorgeous affair with sooo much personality and meaning, it makes you smile from ear to ear.  See it all captured by Mark and Kara Photography right here.

From Mark and Kara Photography… If we had to describe Jamal and Aysegul’s wedding with one word it would be ‘energetic.’ Drums and dancing were key elements. The day kicked off with an elegant backyard ceremony styled by the wedding designers. This was a great example of a modern take on a traditional celebration. Jamal treated us like family which really helps when our goal is to immerse ourselves in a couples lives, even if only for one day. We asked them a few questions, this is what the couple had to say…

How and/or where did you meet?
We have always known each other for 20 years, but we had our first special moment at a friends wedding.

Tell us about your proposal.
Jamal proposed over a romantic dinner that he cooked himself (Seafood Marinara Pasta).

How did you find your wedding gown?
I had visioned and knew exactly what I wanted, so I researched and found the perfect boutique that helped me create my vision.

What was the inspiration for your wedding?
It was a combination of everything we loved, from vintage to classic to traditional to cultural to create and customise a unique elegant wedding.

Did you incorporate any DIY/budget elements into your wedding? If so, please provide some details.
For the ceremony family cooked meals, with our own shopping around for special treats that we love.

What was your favourite detail of the day?
The ceremony with the unique touches and the attention to detail, from the alter, to the buffet, to the frame to the flowers, cant really pick it was all perfect.

Are there any other details that help tell the story of your day (special traditions etc.)?
There are so many to go through. From the photos as you will see, that the groom comes to the bride to her house with customs like knocking on door with drummers playing in the background.

The bride’s red ribbon on her waist. You will see that we had an alter and aisle which seems very western but we customised it to our ways of doing the ceremony.  Where we sit and who our witnesses were, which our fathers were. To the continuation of drummers through the day and night.  No gifts just money and gold.

Is there any advice you would give out to a couple planning their wedding?
Listen to your partner, not everybody else, its about the two of you. It’s once in life time, so don’t hold back and go for whatever you dream or envision.

Chicago Wedding from Robyn Rachel Photography

Chicago has chic down to a science. I don’t know what it is, but couples that call that city home know how to throw a glamorous affair. And this pretty little number from Robyn Rachel Photography and planned by Big City Bride is the perfect example. It’s Louboutin‘s and a gorgeous Rivini gown. It’s the gorgeous ballroom of Chicago Cultural Center filled with twinkling candles and florals from A Stem Above. This wedding is literally overflowing with gorgeous, and you can see it all right here.

From the Bride…Jimmy and I knew that we wanted to get married in Chicago right away- we met in Chicago- in poetry class at Loyola, we had our first date in the city and eventually, 6 years later, he proposed in the city- at the Art Institute at the same Lion his grandfather proposed to his grandmother.  We still go to the same church in the city so we knew exactly where we wanted to have the ceremony.

We chose a winter wedding because Christmas is my favorite holiday and I LOVE the city right before the holidays with the lights and music.  Everyone always seems to be in a great mood around the holidays no matter what.  I wanted something different-after all, I had been in so many weddings, none of which were in the winter.  We wanted a wedding unlike any we had gone to before and this time of year was perfect for that.

I would have to say I first knew I wanted a winter wedding when I saw Katherine Heigls wedding back in 2007-It was the first wedding I looked at in a magazine that truly took my breath away.   She did all red and white- with candles everywhere which I liked at the time but 5 years later, I changed my mind abit.   I wanted more of a glamour/vintage old Hollywood vibe while keeping it classic.  I was looking for inspiration in hundreds of magazines and finally I found this one bouquet with amnesia roses- the perfect “vintage” colored flower.  Its a pink/purple/beige/blue/gray color and it remains my favorite flower!  I chose ivory flowers because that has the winter/snow touch and the light blue berries/ dusty miller also gave it the winter/holiday feel.  I knew I wanted candles everywhere and mercury glass candle holders so I chose the textured gold table cloth to compliment the room and the mercuryglass.  The candles gave it the romantic/night time feel that I was going for- I had to keep in mind that it was going to be dark outside during the whole reception since I chose to have a winter wedding.  Rather than red, I chose eggplant was my “pop” of color to give the flowers, tables and room some dimension.  I chose green because it gave that tiny Christmas touch without being too clich.  I picked the mirrored Vases because my house is filled with mirrored furniture- I love it!!  The baby’s breath at cocktail hour was inspired by the idea of making it feel like there was a huge poof of snow- It was important to me that I still had that winter vibe and since there was no snow outside that day- I am glad we had some inside (even if it was flowers).

I really took the beauty of the room & the Tiffany dome into account when choosing the color scheme.  I wanted to compliment the room not compete with it.  All the colors together looked so rich and sophisticated and that’s exactly what I was going for!  We had round and rectangular tables and there were a total of 4 different tables capes. We wanted a combo of high and low center pieces.  We liked the dimension it added to the room and it was important to me that everyone could talk amongst each other at the tables.  The fruitwood chairs also gave it that touch of class I was going for.

I know that they like the DIY touches- I went to archivers for the favors and used a die cut to cut out all of the snowflakes and then I bought glitter spray to make them shimmer once they were cut and then I used 2 separate stamps for the “thank you” and the bride and groom.  Then we just pre tied them and bought the stickers to make then stay in place on the prosecco bottles.  Prosecco is my favorite wine and thats why we chose it as our favors for our guests.

Melissa & Chris… truly not enough kind words that I can say about the pair. On Saturday May 12, 2013, Bespoke Event Design produced a custom engagement shoot for the duo. Although not familiar with the baking scene, Melissa & Chris wanted something unique and most of all to have fun. In this process they adapted to an unfamiliar environment baking some delectable cupcakes at The Yorkville Kitchen Studio in Toronto, Ontario. With natural light and a blank canvas, Amsis Photography was able to really capture the experience in a whole new way. Not only do they have the photographs to cherish for days but we caught it all on film, capturing why this all began in the first place.

Romantic Italian Destination Wedding from Matthew Moore Photography

There are weddings you adore and then there are weddings you ADORE… drop-dead gorgeous affairs that are so utterly beautiful, you are almost at a loss for words.  This is one of those weddings.  A breathtaking Italian soiree featuring a stunning actress marrying her dashing music producer groom, all while surrounded by family, friends and moment after moment of “Miss Havisham meets Florence and the Machine” pretty (YES).  It’s the kind of day that will most certainly go down in SMP history and you can see it all captured beauitfully by Matthew Moore in the full gallery.

From the Bride… As an actress and screenwriter by trade out in Hollywood it was destined from the beginning that our wedding was going to be a production. Instead of the standard wedding my husband and I were looking to create the set of a movie that would truly transport our guests to another world.

Besides the fact that we are both very artsy people in general, Zach and I are pretty opposite… er, I mean complimentary. Zach is more of a jeans and t-shirt guy. And I am more of a Jimmy Choo and vintage sequined cocktail dress sort of girl. So when it came time to get married, we wanted to find a way to blend our two tastes: him, casual and me, fancy. Him, laid-back and me, dramatic.

We both quickly agreed on a destination wedding since we knew we wanted the wedding to be intimate. And we wanted the event to be more of a collective vacation than some kind of tribute to our coupledom. And I can’t tell you what a perfect decision that was. We settled on Italy, a small town near Lucca called Borgo a Mozzano where I had spent time in college singing opera. (Told you I was hoity toity.) Borgo a Mozzano is in the Garfagna – the wild and untamed mountains of Tuscany.

I’m obsessed with the faded grandeur you can find in Italy – and the villa we chose for the wedding (Villa Catureglio) just embodies it – ivy growing out of the old stone, olive trees everywhere, that gorgeous light that seems to only exist in Italy… To us, there is nothing more beautiful than patina and we wanted to make that the aesthetic focus of the wedding.

To that end, the colors of the wedding are pulled straight from the discoloration in the stone– from salmon to grey to blue to green. There is a whole kaleidoscope of colors just in the stone. We wanted the wedding decor to have an organic feel to it as if it was part of the villa.

The theme for the wedding was Miss Havisham meets Florence and the Machine. The description I like to give is the wedding should look as if it were set up a hundred years ago and then just forgotten. Over the century the elements took over the ivy and moss began to grow over the decor, age faded the tablecloth. And now the wedding has almost a ghostly feel to it. To me there is nothing more romantic than the Havisham tale of a wedding frozen in time. And I love the juxtaposition of beauty and decay.

We obviously had a bit of a challenge pulling off this vision halfway across the world. Also, we wanted to use a more eclectic decorating style than you can usually rent from wedding vendors (especially in Italy where the wedding aesthetic seems to be mostly ‘lets turn the villa into a Miami club!’). So we had to get creative which is where we had so much fun. My mom and I, along with our wedding planners, combed through different thrifts stores in Florence collecting (at quite a reasonable price) fabulous antiques that we used to decorate throughout. We found gorgeous old mirrors that we hung in the limonaia. We went to an old fabric warehouse in Prato and had curtains made for the chapel and elsewhere. We also found fabric there to make our beautiful burlap lace tablecloth! Its amazing how if you’re willing to hunt, you can find amazing things at quite a discount. Combing through Italian thrift stores may not be heaven for everyone but for me and my mom it truly was!

Zach, of course, provided the music, which was a mixture of current indie music along with music from the 1920’s for the dinner to reflect our desire that the wedding feel both vintage and indie. We ended up having 55 of our closest friends and family and it couldn’t have been more perfect. We all spent a few days together before the wedding.

The wedding started in the private chapel on site: a gorgeous, small stone chapel we turned into an ethereal jewel box. We bought some gorgeous velvet and floral silk fabric from a warehouse in Prato that we turned into romantic drapes to dress the windows. The chapel was filled with Kartell Louis ghost chairs in keeping with the somewhat ghostly feel of the wedding.

The bridesmaids walked down the aisle in beautiful navy, 1930’s inspired David Meister gowns as our indie rock musician friend (my cousin) serenaded us with acoustic versions of our favorite songs (“You’ve Got the Love” by Florence and the Machine, “First Day of Our Lives” by Bright Eyes, etc.) It was so unbelievably special to have my cousin sing for us.

I wore a Reem Acra gown (the Olivia) in flowing ivory with silver beaded cap sleeves. My mom and sister and I got it at Kleinfeld at a trunk show. The look was very early Grey Gardens 1930’s glamour. Think Little Edie when she was young and beautiful and full of promise. Or Miss Havisham in her youth.

Once married, we moved into the courtyard of the villa for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Here we had a wonderful surprise planned for our guests. In the distance, they started to hear a band playing celebratory traditional Italian music. The music gradually got closer and closer until through the olive tree-lined entrance to the villa appeared a 30-piece marching band (concerto bandistico)!!! Traditionally, in Italian weddings, the village band plays after the ceremony so we had the local Lucca band do just that for us! They are a fabulous group made up of everyone from 8-year-olds to 80-year-olds who play traditional Italian folk music with perfect imperfection.

The look of the aperitif hour was gorgeous! Drinks were served in the Limonaia (where the lemon trees are stored during the winter). The limonaia is honestly to die for – it’s so Miss Havisham/Grey Gardens with gorgeous French doors opening into this magical space covered in ivy and other hanging vines. Additionally we decorated the walls with a mish-mash of gorgeous, gold antique mirrors we bought at different consignment stores around Florence all in different sizes and shapes– including one gigantic antique mirror (6 feet tall) which rested on the floor. We asked the florist to bring even more ivy to add to the walls and weave around the mirrors to make them feel as if they have been there for centuries. I’m sure I am the only bride who asked the florist to make the venue look more decrepit, but honestly, they did the most magnificent job. Tuscany Flowers (the best!!!) did the flowers.

Decorating the interior of the limonaia were antique chairs and couch purchased at the Lucca antique market. We ended up turning the limonaia into a grand and formal living room that had been over-taken by the elements. The juxtaposition of the antique furniture with the rustic limonaia and its earthy dirt floor is exactly the kind of contradiction we played with throughout the whole wedding.

After the drinks came dinner. Our guests walked through the villa – out to another beautiful courtyard lined with olive trees decorated with hundreds of hanging candles. In between the trees, was a long table covered in a gorgeous burlap lace we had made into a tablecloth from fabric we bought from a wholesale warehouse in Prato. The table was decorated with antique candelabras and vases, filled with romantic and untamed flower arrangements overflowing onto the table, as ivy climbed up the candelabras. Kartell ghost chairs line the table– interrupted only by the occasional antique chair at either end – and a vintage love seat in the center of the table for the bride and groom. Truly the table was a masterpiece. And as the guests ate, we had 1920s music playing which just added to the ambiance.

Instead of a catering company, we were lucky enough to find (thanks to our wedding planners) a famous chef to cook the meal for us. She’s basically the Paula Deen of Italy and she did an impeccable job. We presented her with a bit of a challenge, since we wanted an entirely vegetarian meal. But she pulled it off beautifully!!

After dinner the cake was set up in the grand hall of the villa surrounded by gorgeous moss and placed on an antique base with a stunning patina – we purchased from a nearby salvage yard. The cake was inspired by Wedgewood with intricate ivory detailing on each tier complete with cameos handmade by our master cake artist, Melanie, and topped with a vintage-inspired crown. It truly was BREATHTAKING. (And tasted amazing as well!)

After eating, we walked down a candle-lit walkway, down the property to the loggia (a covered porch of sorts) – made of ancient stone. We transformed this room into cigar/grappa room. We wanted to contrast the simple and masculine stone with feminine and soft decoration. We draped the open windows with rich velvet fabric. And we purchased an assortment of antique furniture from consignment stores to dress up the space as gorgeous chandeliers hung from the ceiling.

Then onto the dancing. We converted the old stone barn into a dancefloor/club – complete with photobooth! Here we had the most fun juxtaposing the modern with the old. A glowing bar with wrap around one of the central columns of the barn as the bartender served us drinks. Crystal chandeliers hung from the walls. We decorated the barn with simple and modern decorations – clean white modern sofas – all white decor against the stone – as we danced into the night. One of the premiere lighting designers in Tuscany lit the space in blues and purples to help complete the transformation.

Our wedding was really the most magical night ever. Our photographers, Matthew and Katie did such an impeccable job capturing the beauty and feel of the event.

Houston Wedding from Day 7

I couldn’t possibly put my finger on what I love most about this gorgeous ballroom beauty captured by Day7. The first thing I fell in love with was this bride’s gorgeous BHLDN gown. It’s a stunner. Then I fell in love with the palette of soft pinks. It doesn’t get prettier. But then I saw the way this Groom looked at his lovely Bride, and all of the things I loved so much went out the window, because that look is priceless. See even more of this gorgeous ballroom wedding here.

From the Bride…The day was how I imagined, full of love and laughter, surrounded by family and friends, sharing that special day with all of them. I remember praying the morning of that it wouldn’t be a horribly hot and humid day that Houston was known for. The ceremony and reception was indoors, but our first look was outside next to the church and we both sweat a LOT! Thankfully, it was somewhat tolerable. I tried to remember as much of the day as I could, since everyone always says the day passes by in a blur! I made it a point to take a step back and take in each moment. It certainly helped that my father is so goofy. The guests and I will never forget when he found the traditional pace of the father and daughter dance too slow and he broke out his own dance moves.

Most of my inspiration came from Style Me Pretty which I browsed a LOT! My sister would even comment that I was addicted. This was how I decided to go with a neutral palette with gold accents and even choose PINK! (well, if we’re being technical, blush) for my bridesmaids. I never really liked pink, but it evoked the feeling of soft romance that I was going for in my wedding. As for tradition, I am somewhat of a reformed traditionalist and wasn’t set on having something new, old, borrowed, and blue. However, my bridesmaids sweetly surprised me with a hand-stitched “tear-chief” (handkerchief for my tears) with D + J and our wedding date in blue letters that was my something blue. One aspect I absolutely adored was incorporating our love of giraffes into the wedding. Instead of a pillow for the rings, I found a stuffed giraffe for the ring boys to carry down the altar.

I am so grateful for all the family and friends who helped with the wedding. All my bridesmaids and wedding coordinator, whose own experiences with their own wedding gave me insights and made the planning process easier. It also helped a lot that they are so crafty (see “tear-chief” above) because we were able to make all the floral centerpieces, bouquets, and boutonnieres. This allowed us to add peonies (my favorite!), to the bouquet, since we found them for a steal from the local grocery store. Since I wanted to bring the outside in, my friend had the brilliant idea to cut pear branches from her yard to complete the look with the cloudberries for the altar arrangements. I am also blessed to have a graphic designer friend who did all the stationary and kept me sane throughout the printing process.  On the day of, my sister did my makeup, and my mom, who did my hair, magically transformed me. Take advantage of any special skills your family and friends have to offer. It definitely made my wedding more personal and memorable.

Outdoor Wedding Glamour + Elegance from We Tie The Knots + Tessa Marie Weddings

I’m what some might call an inspiration junkie. I pin, favorite, and store images away like it’s my job (and it kind of is) hoping to set my brain in a tailspin of beautiful ideas. Well today’s inspiration overload landed right in my lap thanks to this stunning shoot from Tessa Marie Weddings planned by  We Tie The Knots. It’s everything I seek out each day in one pretty post – gorgeous florals from Boukates, stunning linens from La Tavola, perfect chiavari chairs from Sweet Seats and  a show stopping cake from Sweet Peeps Bakery. It’s practically perfect in every way, and it’s all waiting for you right here.

From We Tie The KnotsOur main goal with this styled shoot was to inspire brides to think outside of the box. We chose a bit more of a rustic outdoor venue but jazzed up the tables with sequins and colorful patterned linens. We wanted to show brides you don’t have to do farm tables and vintage decor for an outdoor reception. We are predicting that patterns will be a big trend in 2014. An outdoor venue is perfect for this because its like working with a blank canvas. You don’t have carpet or wallpaper to compete with. We also want to teach brides its ok to mix and match patterns, colors, textures and a bit of modern + vintage.

Gedney Farms Berkshires Wedding from Shane Godfrey Photography

Ever since my sister’s engagement last May, I’ve been spending every last second of spare time helping to plan her rustic barn wedding.  A task that is made decidedly easier given that my “non-spare time” is spent perusing beautiful details and drop-dead gorgeous weddings.  And on days like today, when I get to bask in a pretty little Gedney Farm affair from Shane Godfrey Photography, I don’t have to do one ounce of planning… because it’s all sitting right here, perfectly executed, in the full gallery.

From Shane GodfreyIn the winter of 2010 I shot a wedding out in the Berkshires at Gedney Farms. Ever since then, I had always wanted to go back during the warmer months to really see what this venue had to offer. Anne and Whitney found my work online and once we met up, we both instantly knew we would be a good fit for their wedding last May.

We started the day out at the Salon, followed by a beautiful ceremony, officiated by Scott and Louise Walker, up in the fields at the farm. We then walked around the grounds for a bit and took some amazing photographs in front of a few of the barns as well as in front of the on-site orange old school Chevy truck, which made for an amazing picture. Anne’s mother did all the flowers for the wedding (Orchids, Etc.) and Gedney Farms was the caterer for the event, it was a very DIY style wedding. During the reception there was a sing along with both of their families getting on the mic towards the end of the night, which was a lot of fun, followed by some crazy dancing! It’s been a little over a year now, but this wedding still sticks out in my memory as one of the most fun and beautiful weddings I have ever photographed.

From the Bride… Michael and I are an incredibly low key couple and wanted to keep our wedding as stress-free and intimate as possible. We thought Napa would be the perfect local for a destination wedding because it offers a little something for everyone – not to mention it’s a great place to travel back to for anniversaries!

Planning a Napa wedding from Texas can have its challenges, but Michael and I really shared in the entire process together from start to finish. We made one trip out to Napa to scout vineyards and immediately fell in love with the grounds at V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena. With its lush stone courtyard and stunning barrel room, we knew that it would provide the ideal backdrop for our big day.

The actual weekend of our wedding was perfect – crisp November weather, gorgeous fall foliage, and all of our dearest friends and family. We hosted a welcome celebration at a private residence in St. Helena on the eve of our wedding. This was a great way to relax with all of our guests and kick-off the weekend festivities. The following evening was truly more amazing than we could have ever imagined. Michael and I had our “big reveal” before the wedding at the Old Rutherford Train Station, and then enjoyed a pre-wedding libation with our best friends and siblings. Our ceremony took place in a romantic candlelit courtyard as the sun began to set, with a reception that followed in the winery’s barrel room.

Megan and Michael Gratch live in Fort Worth, Texas. Megan works at an art museum and Michael is in healthcare.

I love my venue, but I hate the carpet/drapes. How can decorate around such a large piece of the venue and draw attention away from it?

For venues that have not updated their décor, we strongly suggest incorporating additional lighting for your room. Lighting can do wonders to any room (with or without ugly décor). Accent lighting alone can make a huge statement and turn not-so-pretty carpet and drapery into can’t-really-see-it-anyways! Picking a color that is in your color palette will heighten the ambiance and add drama to your room.

Pipe and drape is another option; many rental companies and some venues offer this service. By draping the perimeter of the room, you create an elegant, soft look while beautifully covering up those window treatments from 1985.

Specialty linens for your tables can spruce up any décor, but you will want to make sure that they do not clash with the issues you are having with the room. If it’s the patterns that bother you, opt for something simple with a bit of sparkle or sheen.

Lastly, create focal points in the room – tall centerpieces, drapery behind the sweetheart table, decorations on a fireplace mantle, beautiful tall floral arrangements with spot lighting, or floral pieces hanging from the chandeliers. Anything that will draw your guest’s attention up and away from the unattractive carpet and drapes.

I don’t have a huge budget, but I really want to make sure my guests feel like they are at a special affair. Do you have any tips for me? What is the one thing I won’t regret splurging on?

Personalize, personalize, and personalize! It’s the little things and small details that truly make a wedding extra special. These three little letters, DIY (Do-It-Yourself), are crucial for those on a budget! You can add many creative and unique elements to your wedding without having to go over budget when you DIY. Look on Etsy and Pinterest for a plethora of endless ideas and inspiration.

Food and entertainment/music are both areas that we say splurge away! Eat, Drink and Be Merry is a famous saying for a reason! Guests will always remember what they ate at your wedding and what music was played (and if it was good). ALWAYS do a tasting to try the food being served and do your research on your band or DJ. Read reviews, listen to them live, or have them send you a sample of their work. If you want your guests to bring their dancing shoes, give them something to work with!

What can I do to spruce up the dessert table or other vignettes?

Dressing up a dessert table or any other special table is just as important as styling any outfit. It also offers another focal point in the room and certainly raises the FUN factor.

We are BIG fans of using specialty table linens – sequins, lace, chevron, or another fun print! Spruce it up with hanging poms, lanterns, or strings of lights. Add accents with extra floral in varying heights and cylinders, unique serving trays, cute patterned labels or chalkboards, to create an amazing and eye-catching display of TLD’s (tasty little devils)!

I’ve found the most beautiful outdoor venue… what backup plans can I make for weather that won’t make me feel like all my plans are ruined?

Although a gorgeous wedding outside is a perfect idea for summer, sometimes the weather isn’t always on your side. Preparing to shield your guests from the natural elements while keeping your event outside requires a tent that is large enough to accommodate all of your outdoor wedding festivities. If you are having both your ceremony and reception outdoors, you will definitely need two tents. Heaters are always nice to have on hand depending on the time of year and the chill factor.

If your venue offers indoor space, be prepared to bring the outdoors in. Implementing trees into your décor can be a tremendous asset to decorating an indoor space—people don’t quite expect them. Not to say that you should have a big maple or blossoming apple tree in the middle of the dance floor, but a few trees lined in an entryway or in the corners of the room will have a beautiful effect. Especially if you embellish them with white lights and floral!

Is transportation for guests a must? What about an open bar?

In my opinion, transportation is a must, IF your ceremony or reception requires guests to leave the hotel, resort, or B&B. Your bridal party, family, and friends are coming from all over (in most cases) to celebrate the union of your love; the least you can do is pamper them a little, right?

The hotels we work with either offer shuttle service to your guests, or they outsource discounted transportation services for larger party buses, shuttles, etc. Be sure to see a picture of the vehicle promised to you or visit the company before signing that contract (and make sure your contract states the specific type of transportation/color, etc.). You want to make sure it’s not a restored yellow school bus—unless that’s the vintage look you are going for. Do not forget to include a shuttle service schedule in your welcome box (especially if there will be more than one pick up).

An open bar is a definite Y-E-S! Again, you are inviting your friends, family, and co-workers to be a “guest” at your event. Do you really want them to feel like they are at a restaurant or bar, ordering and paying for drinks? Absolutely not—you want them to feel special; they are honoring you with their presence and sharing in one of the most memorable days of your life.

If you are on a tight budget, it’s ok to only offer beer, wine, and champagne, along with a few specialty drinks.

So on top of the fact that Stacey is a total genius and absolute sweetheart, isn’t she gorg? These pictures were all from her wedding, and I for one can’t get over that dress. Thank you so much Stacey for answering our questions. And lovelies, if you have a question for Stacey, feel free to leave it in the comments! I’m sure she’d love to answer a few more.

Half Moon Bay Wedding from Christian Oth Studio + Lyndsey Hamilton Events

There’s something fiercely magical about the The Ritz at Half Moon Bay. It’s the kind of locale that makes for a dream of a wedding, especially when Lyndsey Hamilton EventsrEvolve and Elegant Cheese Cakes have anything to do with it. But what really makes this wedding shine is that it’s sort of three events in one. That’s right — a trio of prettiness with the most gorgeous day-after session you ever did see. Mike Falco of Christian Oth Studio worked his magic behind the camera and per usual, we’re speechless.

From Lyndsey Hamilton EventsNatalie and David both live in Hong Kong, but wanted to give their guests a spectacular destination event. The groom has some family in San Francisco and the city holds a special place in the bride’s heart, so it was a pretty easy decision to settle on the Bay Area for their wedding.  After investigating several venues, they fell absolutely in love with the Ritz-Carlton at Half Moon Bay. Natalie initial wanted an outdoor venue for the both ceremony and reception, but with the incredibly unpredictable weather along the Northern California coast, a compromise was made: the ceremony would be held outside at the gazebo on the hotel property and dinner would be hosted in the main ballroom.

Knowing that the bride and groom wanted an elegant, outdoor, garden wedding, we worked hand in hand with the florist (Ariana of Lily Lodge) and lighting designer (Manu of rEvolve) to make an indoor garden a reality. Potted trees and ferns were brought into the ballroom, the tables were filled with fragrant, Downton Abbey inspired arrangements, string lights were hung to create a warm, summer evening feel, and clusters of lanterns were placed around the room to round out the decor. Everything else in the room, from linens, to china, to menus were carefully chosen to compliment the overall design.

Dinner was an elegant, formal affair, featuring a duo of lobster and quail. The party that followed was one for the books: the bride and groom opened the dancing portion of the evening with a steamy tango (complete with outfit changes for both!) and continued well into the night with music by DJ Smiles of The Flashdance. Guests were also treated to a photo booth and midnight snacks before the party came to an end.

The next day, Natalie and David had a photoshoot with the amazing Mike Falco from Christian Oth Studios in Muir Forest. He was the principal photographer at the wedding the day before, but the newlyweds wanted a day to themselves and some much more intimate photographs than would have been possible with all their guests in attendance. They spent the day at the beach and in the redwood forests, with some stunning images as a result.

Travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico with Kimberly Chau

Our Livings editor, Jacquelyn, is a travel junkie. Me, not so much. I think when you have two smelly kids, the idea of being too far from home suddenly becomes a bit more, well, daunting. But honestly? Seeing these gorgeous images from the lovely Kimberly Chau from her trip to Puerto Rico sort of makes me want to throw caution to the wind and pack up the whole family. Almost. This trip is beauty defined and there is so much more right here in the gallery.

From KimberlyMy husband and I were married last year in July and we planned our honeymoon a few months later in October. We wanted to travel within the U.S. territories and found a city with a lot of culture, history, shopping, and great food. In the end, the decision and wait for San Juan, Puerto Rico was so worth it!

Our accommodations were at El Convento, a charming old world hotel in the heart of Old San Juan. The stay was a stone’s throw from food and shopping and provided gorgeous views of the city. We walked the historic streets of Old San Juan and they were filled with quaint and lively little shops, boutiques, and old buildings. Many of the owners run small businesses here and were very friendly and welcoming to tourists. Likewise, almost everyone spoke English.

The Puerto Rican food on the island was phenomenal, of course. My hubby and I still crave for the chuleta can can (Puerto Rican-style pork chops) and mofongo (mashed plantains) that were traditional dishes in the area. Both dishes are popular on the island and can be found at a reasonable price (and they accept U.S. Dollars).

During our trip, we also toured the Castillo San Felipe del Morro (or El Morro), a famous fort used the defend San Juan from enemies in the sea. The views towards the ocean and over the island were simply beautiful and amazing. Most people can walk to these sites, but there is the option of public transport as well.

I highly encourage travelers to pack light and to find a good pair of comfortable walking shoes when visiting Puerto Rico. Most of our travels were by ground and we knew we would come back heavier with all the available shopping. I chose to photograph my trip entirely in film and I’m so glad I chose this medium to journal our trip. I love how the film preserved the atmosphere, colors, and views of San Juan to its best integrity. I would love to go back and explore more of the island one day!

Sailboat Engagement from 1313 Photography

Sailboats, gorgeous light, super in love couples – all those things fall happily at the tippy top of my favorite things list. So it basically goes without saying that I want to live in each and every image from 1313 Photography sitting in this gallery. It’s true. I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite, but I’ll happily spend the rest of the day trying. Join me in devouring all the pretty here.

From 1313 PhotographyMike grew up on sail boats and thought this was a fair compromise, two hours on a sail boat for two hours of photography. The boat was the Nepenthe, through Classic Sailing Charters, Mike Del Marmol was the captain. The marina was Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove.

Los Angeles Wedding from Jessica Claire

There are big weddings and then there are crazy huge weddings, i.e. 500 people huge. But that in no way takes away from the sheer elegance and beauty of this Los Angeles affair. It’s a recipe filled with amazing vendors like Tic Tock Florals and Details Details, a penchant for classic beauty and images by Jessica Claire that showcase the coming together of all those pretty parts. See the full day right here.

From the Bride…Brent might say it was love at first sight, but when we first met, I just thought of him as a close friend of my brothers and cousin.  A year later, after they continued to encourage me to go out with him, I finally decided to give in and it was the best decision of my life. After our first date, I never wanted to spend a minute away from him. He was everything I ever thought I wanted in a partner, and everything I never knew someone could be.  He brings out the best in me and complements me in every facet of my life. When I am by his side, I feel secure and comforted. He is my true Romeo.

For me and Brent, the wedding process was more than we had anticipated – planning for 500 people is not easy!  We always knew that no matter what we wanted to get married outside while the sun was going down. We chose the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena because of the gorgeous lawn area that faces the sunset.  We knew the Spanish Mission style of the hotel would mesh perfectly with our  desire to have a rustic garden theme – the simplicities of both really drew us to the venue.

We had been following the events done by Eddie Zaratsian of Tic Tock Florals and knew that he could nail our vision. Our favorite aspects designed by Tic Tock were the beautiful chuppa, the seating card table and the hedge/flower combination at the edge of the stage and dance floor. The venue and floral setup, combined with the sun going down, really set the stage for an incredible night.  There was such great energy during the ceremony – especially when our family and friends were dancing down the aisle to songs we had selected for them – which peaked when Brent and I read our vows to each other.  As soon as the ceremony was done we had the best time dancing, laughing and singing the night away. Pats provided delicious food for the entire evening, from the appetizers to the four course dinner to the late night kobe sliders and fries – everyone was raving about the catering!

Our siblings gave memorable speeches that spoke volumes of their love for us and really commemorated the evening.  I think our favorite part of the night was our last dance.  We were both so exhausted, but we also didn’t ever want the song, or the night, to end. Looking back at the exceptional pictures that Jessica Claire took throughout the night (including our favorite which was a last shot of the night as the elevator doors were closing) and the wonderful video shot by James Reid of Manifest Videography has ensured that we can watch the very best images of our incredible night for all of our years together.
