Rustic

Doug and Rocki have always had a love for adventure. After living in the Cayman Islands for three years together, their love for nature and the outdoors only grew stronger.

As a native Texan, Rocki has always had a love for the unique beauty and quaintness of the Texas Hill Country. Doug and Rocki wanted their wedding to encompass a rustic shabby chic feel which The Creek Haus, in the little town of Dripping Springs, was just what they were looking for.

The Creek Haus property is absolutely stunning! It has everything from a wooden alter made from distressed wood overlooking a creek with the rolling Texas hills painted in the background, to a rustic shabby chic indoor venue which the architecture was inspired after an elegant barn. They both fell in love with the fact that the property was able to capture both a whimsical and romantic feel with still keeping its Texas charm.

Their inspiration was to keep the natural rustic beauty of the property by using a neutral color palette with pops of burgundy and rust to tie into the Fall season. The decor was designed by Petal Pushers who did an undeniably beautiful job bringing their vision to life. They used assorted cylinder glass candles and mixed gold mercury votives to create an elegant antique feel with lots of greenery and cascading floral for a romantic feel. The floral design was like a dream which consisted of a lush mix of in peonies, garden roses, ranunculus and dark berries.

Doug and Rocki have are both huge foodies and two very important thing to us was making sure their guests had happy bellies and great music to groove to. Crave Catering served up a finger licking reception dinner of bison chili and shrimp grits just to name a few of the top hits. Doug searched everywhere for the perfect band for their guests to dance the night away and The Royal Dukes kept our guests on their feet all night long. They chose Jenna McElroy for their photographer to capture some of the best candid moments and the most memorable day.

Doug and Rocki feel every aspect of their wedding encompassed everything they wanted and is truly a day they will never forget!

Dove Gray + Soft White Wedding Inspiration

Let’s escape the dullness of Monday and head to Maine, where we have a scene set before us that’s sure to make us forget all the tedious tasks we should be doing instead. Always Your Events transformed Hardy Farm into a romantic oasis, Amanda Day Rose Paperie invited us in, and 1956 Blooms made our floral wishes come true; it’s pretty much wedding inspiration nirvana and thanks to Megan Braemore’s pics, we don’t have to let this beauty go anytime soon. Join me in our Vault for more

From Always Yours EventsThe gorgeous venue was Hardy Farm and Inn, a restored barn with gray-washed walls, crystal chandeliers, two grand center staircases, white sliding wood doors and reclaimed wood floors, and it worked impeccably with this wedding design. The color palette and scope of this design was inspired by the juxtaposition of soft sheepskin texture and clear lucite, combining soft and feminine fabrics with angular and firmer elements. The color palette incorporated multiple shades of gray, a soft blue-gray, soft white and matte gold.

Details included lucite “ghost” chairs topped with sheepskin throws, gray tapered candles, matte gold straight edged Arezzo flatware, matte gold candlesticks, lucite menu cards and escort cards with etched calligraphy, Belgian gray linen napkins, a plethora of long dyed silk ribbons in various shades of gray and soft white, and stunning flowy and organic wide bouquets and centerpieces incorporating white peonies and Icelandic poppies tied with strands of dyed silk ribbons. And of course Tori’s statement gown. This stunning Watters gown invoked the qualities of lucite with the illusion neckline, bodice and back, while still featuring an ethereal skirt made from layers and layers of soft ivory tulle and chiffon.

6 Steps to Designing a Playroom to Grow with Your Kiddos

Ask any mom. Having a dedicated play space for the kiddos is basically like hitting the house lottery. Even if it’s a tiny closet off the kitchen that you magically transform into a glorified playpen. Containment is everything. So when Nashville based interior designer, Kendall Simmons, offered to share her tips for creating a space that actually grows WITH your children, we were all ears. More kid spaces right here!

From Kendall Simmons, interior designer...

I designed this playroom for the Massa family – Emory (age 2) and Quinn (age 9 months). Their parents approached me with a request to transform a large unfinished attic space into a functional playroom for their two small kiddos. At the time it was being used for storage, but we put it to much better use! My goal was to create a room with lots of natural light, bright color, and durable finishes for the kids to grow into and enjoy for years to come.

CREATE ZONES

We decided to create four different zones to meet the needs of their family:
1) Open play space
2) Overflow sleeping space
3) Desk area for homework and arts and crafts
4) Storage to help eliminate toy clutter from other rooms in the house

ADD STORAGE

The custom designed built-in elements throughout the room go a long way to maximize storage and functionality, and keep as much open floor space for running and playing as possible! These custom built-ins include double bunks, book ledges, window seat, storage cabinets and double desk. They are all painted in the same white paint color as the walls (Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17) in order to make the room feel as large as possible.

KEEP WALLS SIMPLE (to show off artwork!)

The white walls provide the perfect backdrop for lots and lots of fun pops of color! Examples of this include the custom chartreuse Roman shades, the bold striped bedding, piles of multi-color pillows, and a collection of vintage globes. I chose a rainbow of different accent colors in order the keep the room as gender neutral as possible. A simple wall mounted art line, and a custom pin board over the desk create spaces where the kids can display art and photos that are important to them, without creating clutter or messiness.

EASY HIDE/CLEAN FLOORS

The grey carpet is intentionally dark, with a small pattern, in order to help mask any future stains that are bound to happen in a high traffic kid zone! The carpet is a synthetic fiber for easy cleaning, and it’s extra plush so that it’s comfortable to crawl on!

SOURCE, SCOUT, BUY.

The artwork and accessories are a great mix of new and vintage pieces. The collection of globes, brass giraffes, map, game board and Crayola print are all vintage items sourced from Nashville antique stores.

PLAN FOR THE FUTURE

I designed each area of the room keeping in mind that Emory and Quinn won’t be little forever. We located electrical and cable outlets in the wall so that a TV can be added later. The floor space is large enough that a sofa and chairs can eventually replace the toys to make a teenager hang out room.

When Her Dad Got a Life-Threatening Diagnosis, She Put on a Wedding Dress

Every girl dreams of that moment her dad sees her in the wedding dress. The moment he walks her down the aisle. The moment they share a father-daughter dance to their special song. It was precious moments like this Emily Millay knew she might never get when her father’s illness took a tragic turn, so she decided to plan the ultimate surprise. Wearing a replica of grandmother’s gown, she met him on the steps of the Cleveland Museum of Art for a “wedding day” first look, photo shoot, and father-daughter dance. The day resulted in photos she’ll cherish forever, and in honor of her late father we invite you to see the truly beautiful moments captured.

From Emily MillayA girl is never too old to play dress up with her daddy. When our family learned that my father’s illness was getting worse and time was limited, there were a few things that instantly crossed my mind. One of them being that I might not have my dad to walk me down the aisle or to see me on my wedding day in a wedding dress – these beautiful moments that I photograph weekend after weekend for so many of my brides.

This thought absolutely broke my heart. He is a father of three girls. Three girls that, like every other, look forward to those moments. How could it be possible for him to miss out on such a day and many other milestones in our lives. But this one stuck with me. So I thought, why not make it happen? Certainly a crazy thought at first, but now I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

We played dress up for the last time. -Emily

I wanted a replica wedding dress of my grandmother’s made, and we did just that. We played dress up for the last time. I simply told him to meet me at the art museum – I didn’t want to spoil the surprise. After the “first look” I had one of my favorite Irish bands, Mary’s Lane, play a song for us to dance to so my father could experience that moment, as well.

Other special details include great grandmother’s forget me not pin as “something blue”, a pearl bracelet that was my mother’s “something borrowed”, and my grandmother’s mother of pearl ring as “something old”. The freesia boutonniere was selected because my father’s nickname when he first met my mother was “The Freesia Man”. Also, the 28 buttons on the back of my dress were taken off my grandmother’s wedding dress. I chose a handful of photographers to help me with this photo shoot, each one playing a different part in the day.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with these photos at the time. However, my father passed away in the beginning of February, I thought now I would share these photos with everyone. Perhaps it will be a reminder to be grateful for the people who are with you on your wedding day, and every day.

See their special father-daughter dance!

These Two Met on Facebook and Their Engagement is Totally Share-Worthy

I’m always up for a modern day meet-cute, so when these two shared about their initial Facebook chat turned lifelong love, you better believe we went bananas around the SMP HQ. To celebrate their engagement, this pair planned a shoot with Honey Honey Photography at Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park and let me just say – the fashion game was on point! We’re talking two gorgeous dresses plus a fun switch to cultural outfits for both him and her. Go see it all for yourself tucked inside The Vault.

From The Bride…Khang and I first chat on Facebook! We work in the same field (geeky illustration stuff for film and games) and just clicked chatting about robot designs and anime. I’m from South Korea and my plan was to study art abroad in the US. It was also an excuse to meet Khang as well! On our first trip together to San Francisco we totally hit if off. Though my English was limited, we connect so easily and have so much in common. I felt so comfortable and happy with him instantly. Two years later full of memorable moments and endless nerdy debates, Khang proposed to me! He surprised me on our anniversary at Sequoia National Park. On a white snowy hill nearby General Grant tree, Khang knelt down and of course I said YES!

For our engagement shoot, we wanted something cozy and rustic. We both love to go hiking and being outdoor since we spend most of our days staring at Photoshop. Our photographer Emma from Honey Honey Photography recommended Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park for its wilderness setting. I was so grateful to have the Hanbok handmade in Korea by my mom’s friend. I knew her since I was a kid and she is like family to me. My wedding dress was work in progress by our friend Sharlene so it wasn’t ready yet at the time. Luckily, Sharlene was kind enough to lend me two beautiful wedding dresses for the shoot! We couldn’t be happier with how the photos came out and we can’t wait to show them to our family and friends. We want to say thanks to Emma for capturing this beautiful time of our life!

Fun-Filled Destination Wedding at Secrets The Vine Cancun

The travel bug bit these two sweeties a long, long time ago, so when it came time to plan their Big Day, a destination wedding was a total must.  Their locale of choice? Secrets The Vine Cancun, a sweet little piece of paradise perfect for saying “I do” seaside, dining under the stars and dipping in the pool post-nuptials (it happened).  See every fun-filled moment captured by Melissa Mercado in THE VAULT.

From the Bride… I’d never been to the Caribbean until I met my fiancé Matt six years ago and only after a few months of dating, he took me to Cancun for my first time and we had so much fun together. Ever since then, we’ve been traveling all over the Caribbean! He is my favorite vacation partner and we’ve been to Bermuda, the Florida Keys, St Martin, St Barths, Jamaica, Cancun, Riviera Maya and Aruba. I’m happiest when we can both be fun and silly and that is why we like to travel because our lives in New York City can become pretty stressful!

He proposed at a rooftop bar in the Meatpacking district of NYC where we first met. We love going out to nice dinners and enjoying delicious food and wine. We also love staying in and watching movie after movie. We decided to get married in Cancun because we have friends and family that live all over the world and they might as well travel to somewhere warm and fun so we can all be on vacation together! Never in our lives will we have everyone we love on vacation with us so we are very excited!

If I were to describe our style, I would say we are classy and elegant but can have a lot of fun and get crazy! Our families are very traditional but we stayed true to our personalities and decided to have a destination wedding. It is very important to us that we have beautiful pictures to capture the memories. We love taking pictures when we go on vacations and we make photo books for each trip we take.

We are getting married at Secrets the Vine and we are planning to have the ceremony on a terrace overlooking the lagoon and the reception by the pool.

From Melissa Mercado Photography… I couldn’t have been more excited to meet Matt + Clara before their wedding day. It’s not always easy to do with destination couples, because of schedules and resort restrictions. But Matt + Clara decided to start their vacation with a Catamaran Tour around Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) just north of Cancun. The day was amazing with the backdrop of the Turquoise waters. Everyone mingled and got to catch up, enjoy a few adult beverages and really just get into their vacation. The group definitely knows how to have a great time and were easily comfortable in front of the camera!

By the time we got to the wedding day, my job was easy – document the moments as they happened and help keep everyone plugged into the moment. Clara had all kinds of great ideas of what she want covered and was helped by a great group of girls that helped her be not only prepared, but relaxed and enjoy her day.

I think the only thing we had working against us on this otherwise perfect day, was just the sheer heat of an August wedding in the Caribbean. Everyone took it in stride though, we adjusted our portrait time to not let anyone get to uncomfortable and by the end of the night, all cares were thrown to the wind and everyone ended up in the pool.

A Decadent Chocolate Cake to Add to Your Dessert Stockpile

Chocolate needs little introduction. It’s delicious all on its own and when gussied up in decadent chocolate cake with raspberry sauce form… um, even better. This dessert spotted on Waiting On Martha from Kathryn McCrary and Homespun is getting added to the Make This! pile of dessert goodness. And for more from that delicious pile, click here.

Today’s recipe is an elevated take on every chocolate lover’s dream (Mama K are you listening). Smooth, velvety chocolate cake shares the spotlight with one of my personal favorites, fresh raspberry. Add in a boozy component of raspberry liqueur in this decidedly delightful dessert from Chef Jason of Homespun.

Decadent Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce
prep time
25 Minute/s
cook time
45 Minute/s
total time
1 Hour/s 10 Minute/s
Serves 0Ingredients
  • For the Chocolate Cake
  • 9 oz. Bittersweet Chocolate, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar, scant
  • 2 tablespoons Chambord Liqueurs
  • 5 Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons All Purpose Flour
  • Pan Spray, as needed
  • Confectioners Sugar, as needed for garnish
  • For the Raspberry Sauce
  • 1 ½ cups raspberries
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
  1. For the cake: Pre-heat oven to 350f. Generously grease a 9x2 inch spring form pan. Line the bottom with baking parchment and grease. Wrap the bottom of the pan with foil to prevent water seeping in while the cake is baking.
  2. Set up a double boiler. In a bowl, combine chocolate and butter pieces. Begin melting butter and chocolate. Add sugar stirring often, until smooth. Allow mixture to cool slightly then add liquor.
  3. In a large bowl, beat eggs lightly until froth, about 1 minute. Add flour, then slowly add melted chocolate mixture until well combined and smooth. Pour into prepared pan.
  4. Place pan in a large baking sheet that has a 1 inch lip. Add boiling water until it's about ¼ inch up the side of the springform pan. Bake for 25- 30 minutes, until the edge is set but the center is still soft.
  5. Remove the pan from the water pan. Place springform pan on cooling rack. Once cake has cooled for about an hour, remove the springform side and turn the cake onto the wire rack, parchment should be on top now. Allow to cool longer and carefully peel parchment off the top.
  6. To serve, dust confectioner's sugar over the top and serve with fresh berries and raspberry sauce.
  7. For the raspberry sauce: Combine all ingredients into a small sauce pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook until berries are tender (roughly 4 minutes).
  8. Whisk sauce to break up berries, until chunky. For a refined sauce puree until smooth.
  9. Pour into container and refrigerate up to 3 days.

Chic Winery Wedding with a Touch of Glam + a Surprise from the Groom

Every moment of this sophisticated, glamorous wedding is absolute perfection—the gorgeous Bride’s dramatic open-back gown, the couple’s sweet dog, the super-chic escort card display, and, of course, the surprise DJ set from the Groom himself. From start to finish, this winery wedding is beautiful, and thanks to Viera Photographics, you can soak it all up in The Vault!

MustWatch_swash-01
[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/139026256 600 338]

From The Bride…We envisioned a day set on a private vineyard that had a sense of casual sophistication and elegance with a hint of glam. It was important to both of us to find an intimate setting for our closest friends and family to enjoy a magical evening filled with great food and wine, and music. We also wanted to have multiple experiences throughout the afternoon and night for our guests, which included signature cocktails, a gourmet menu with a variety of tasting stations, and two different settings for music and dancing, including the groom DJ’ing a set! And of course an off-site after party that went until 2am!

I’m a big fan of all white, which is why our color palette was filled with different hues of white and ivory, and some elements of greenery to pull in the natural colors of the vineyard. As well as metallics, because everyone needs some sparkle!

I have to admit that I am not a big DIY’er, but our wedding planner and her team were rockstar’s and created a lot of the finishing touches, which tied everything together seamlessly. We worked together to design several unique elements that I absolutely loved, one of which was our custom table assignment hedge, and the unique food menu that we all enjoyed.

I’d have to say I have two favorite moments…One was turning the corner to make the long walk down the isle, and how special it was to finally see all of the design elements come together and see all of our close family and friends looking on. The second would have to be seeing how much fun my husband had djing in the gorgeously decorated barn, and how much fun that was for our guests.

Our floral designer nailed my vision for our flowers. I wanted grand pieces for the back of the isle, which I think fit perfectly with the modern clear chairs, and wanted an eclectic mix of vases and metallics for our flowers for our table settings, which is exactly what she accomplished. My dress was something that ended up being a meant-to-be moment, which I appreciated so much. I originally had decided on a very expensive designer couture gown, which was lovely, but I was not completely in love. I then happened to stumble upon Katie May, a local LA designer who happens to specialize in more fitted dresses with dramatic open backs, which is exactly what I had dreamed of for an outdoor, vineyard setting. We didn’t end up doing favors, mostly because I didn’t love any of the ideas I came across, and also because our wedding was destination style with dinner Friday evening on the property, and a beautiful Sunday brunch at another local winery after the fact. We untraditionally decided not to have cake. Neither one of us are cake fans, and thought it would be more fun to do an assortment of desserts for everyone to enjoy, and be able to choose from. We served individually sized chocolate bourbon bread pudding, fresh fruit tarts, homemade truffles with a port bar, and the chef hand scooped two different types of sorbet and gelato to our guests. We never actually got to try any, but everyone raved about all of the dessert options!

My biggest piece of advice is to go with the flow as much as possible, while also understanding that everything is very expensive (which the groom typically will be upset about), but its all worth it in the end! Unless you have an endless budget you will have to cut some costs in some areas in order to accomplish your overall design vision in other areas. Also hire a great wedding planner who shares your aesthetic and vision, unless you have the ability to have a secondary full-time job, which is absolutely what wedding planning is.

We met about 5 years ago in real estate. I was running a boutique real estate firm’s office in Beverly Hills at the time, and Jon was a mortgage broker at the time who came in for our weekly office meetings.

We saw each other each week during our weekly office meetings, but didn’t know each other very well. He asked me to meet for a drink after work one evening to “get to know me better” and earn my clients business, but instead we ended up spending the entire evening and night talking and hanging out, which ultimately led to us very casually dating. It was a slow process, and hardly romantic for the first 6 months or so.

Jon knocked his proposal out of the park! First, I had absolutely no idea it was coming and thought he was just whisking me away for a romantic weekend in Napa to celebrate my 30th birthday. Once we arrived in Napa he would only reveal what that day’s plans were, so each day was a surprise. On the day before my birthday he had arranged a full day of private wine tastings while being chauffeured around by a private driver. Our last stop was a winery with beautiful underground caves where I thought we were being given a private tour. The owner greeted us and showed us back through the caves to an area where we would be tasting. At the time I thought to myself how beautiful there set-up was as they had candles lining the barrels down the cave, and then the area where I thought we were going to taste was elaborately decorated with more candles, candelabras and flowers. There was also lovely background music playing. At the time I was completely clueless and had no idea what was going on, which was much to Jon’s shock! The owner said she needed to grab something and shortly after that our favorite song came on, and Jon pulled me in close to tell me how much he loved me. Me – I’m still clueless at this point! He next got down on one knee to ask me to marry him at which point I completely lost it and finally pieced the whole thing together! The winery had a beautiful table adorned with more flowers and candles waiting for us with a spread of champagne, cheeses and chocolates. It was such a magical moment, especially considering I was truly surprised. We followed the proposal with a wonderful dinner, and then a trip to the spa and dinner at The French Laundry to celebrate my birthday the next day. I found out after the fact that he had been planing the whole thing with the owner of the winery for 3 months, had the music play list shipped up, as well as a special bottle of wine shipped up ahead of time to have for our dinner that evening. It is an experience I will cherish forever, and a story to be told for a long time!

Our wedding planning process was somewhat unique I think as we knew that we needed to find a great, full service planner and designer to help us as we had a busy business to continue to run. We thankfully found Danae fairly quickly who was available for our date, so she was able to take over right away. We weren’t set on an exact location at first, we just knew we wanted it to be outdoors in a beautiful setting and preferred more of a destination style event with smaller guest list. We looked from Malibu to Napa, and ultimately decided on Paso Robles where we found the perfect setting for our outdoor, vineyard wedding. It was also a great compromise for our guests driving from up from LA. Our planner/designer was absolutely brilliant and took over just as we needed. It also helped that she shared a very similar design aesthetic to me. Overall it was a fairly stress free process, until the very end when our expenditures went through the roof, which was admittedly because I had a clear vision of exactly what I wanted, which of course was quite expensive. In the end we were both blown away by the result and it was more than we could have ever imagined it could be.

The property where we got married also has a beautiful rustic home situated on it that we rented for the entire weekend, which was where I stayed with my bridesmaids the night before, and where all of us girls got ready the day of. We all woke up that morning to a beautiful brunch spread complete with mimosas and spent the day chatting and getting hair and make-up done. The ceremony began at 4pm beneath a gorgeous, old Oak tree where our guests were seated in the shade of the tree. We decided we were going to be married by Jon’s sister who got ordained the year prior specifically for our day. We had 110 guests in all, which is exactly what we wanted. A close, intimate setting with our favorite family and friends. After the ceremony concluded our guests walked up to a terraced area set amongst the vines where they were greeted with more champagne, a cheese and charcuterie spread, signature cocktails and paired passed hors d’oeuvres. We quickly took a handful of wedding party photos, but both wanted to be a part of the cocktail party fun that we had spent so much time planing. After the cocktail hour concluded our guests were escorted over to a separate area on the property for the remainder of the reception. The reception area was centered around a white dance floor and surrounded by farm tables in square and rectangle shapes that were adorned with mirrored tops, beautiful neutral linens, gold flatware and an eclectic mix of vases and flowers. After our first dance and a couple toasts (one that was particularly epic given by Jon’s best man) our guests were invited to partake in an amuse-bouche style dinner from various stations that represented the freshest and most beautiful selections of food from the sea, the land, and the farm. As dinner was winding down the sun was setting behind the rolling hills of vineyards, the bar opened, the music started playing, and the entire property was lit up with lights and candles. As the evening went on, the port and desert stations opened for business, and the barn doors opened for an after-hours themed experience where Jon was the special guest DJ. After a 20 minute set legendary house music icon, DJ Dan stepped up to keep the party going. The early finish time of 10pm was only a minor intermission in the evening and as soon as the music shut down, guests were escorted to a venue downtown…on their way to an after-party that went until 2am! The next day we rounded out the weekend of festivities with a private brunch at another local winery where we could share in the moments and memories of the night before, while sipping on some much needed champagne!

Most of our guests described the ambiance as magical, which is certainly how we felt. We had the time of our lives with a back drop of absolutely stunning décor, unbelievable food from a local farm-to-table chef, and so many special details that my planner and I had spent months planning. We wanted a feeling of modern, rustic elegance with a touch of glam, which is exactly what our vendors accomplished!

Our overall feeling was one of absolute thankfulness for our friends and family traveling from far and wide to be with us, and were so glad we got to spend the entire weekend with them. We were overwhelmed by the love and support we felt, and were also relieved to be able to relax and actually start to enjoy our marriage, and of course had the honeymoon to look forward to!

From Viera PhotographicsThe wedding ceremony was held under the shade of an immense oak tree that’s rumored to be over 400 years old and the guests were seated on transparent chairs that allowed the site to blend in inconspicuously with the natural beauty all around. The nuptials were performed by Jon’s slightly nervous sister and were fairly short and very sweet. The couple clearly intended the day to be one that was enjoyed with their guests so portraits and formal photos were kept to a minimum and socializing was the order of the day.

The theme of the day, decor-wise was modern, rustic elegance and the family-style tables in the reception area were covered with mirrored tops, then lavishly appointed with abundant floral arrangements, unique votive candle holders, and hammered steel flatware.

Food was served amuse-bouche style from various stations and represented the freshest and most beautiful selections of food from the sea, the land, and the farm. Speeches led to dancing, which led to more dancing and as the evening went on, the port and desert stations opened for business. Jon, a dedicated house music lover and proponent of taking the underground music experience above ground in the 1990’s had a special surprise in store for his guests. Guests who were dancing under the starry night sky were ushered into Hammersky’s barn where an after-hours themed experience was waiting for them with special guest DJ, Jon himself. After a seamless 20 minute set of some deep-funky-business, good friend and legendary house music icon, DJ Dan stepped up to keep the party going. The early finish time of 10pm was only a minor intermission in the evening and as soon as the music shut down, guests almost instantly vanished…on their way to what was certain to be a legendary after-party in town.

Refined French Elegance Inspiration in Côte d’Azur

When a talented duo like Marta Guenzi and Margherita Orlandi  join forces, you know you are in for some seriously good inspiration. And when that inspiration just so happens to take place in none other than the dreamy Côte d’Azur, you just know you have some serious pretty on your hands. Well, it’s our lucky day, folks, because all of the french-inspired lovely is waiting for you here.

From Marta Guenzi PhotographerI designed this wedding inspiration together with Margherita Orlandi, super talented stylist and event creator. We have been inspired by the refined elegance typical of the French Riviera during a business trip we made there: it seemed to us a perfect scenario for a wedding inspiration session! Cap Ferrat is called “the city of flowers”, so we tried to evoke the spirit of that dreamy place, to let people feel the wind and smell the blossoms from the pictures.

Côte d’Azur means little beaches surrounded by nubby maritime pines, rocky cliffs where to admire pink sunsets looking at the seagulls playing in the sky, medieval villages with narrow lanes full of flowers and of old fashioned street lamps, breathtaking panoramas on the sea and on the coast and most of all that kind of romance that France represents worldwide.

We imagined a slow morning awakening of the bride, in a typical French bedroom among bed sheets in toile de Jouy fabric, reading a love letter left on her pillow. Then a walk on the beach with the groom-to-be, a ceremony overlooking the sea and finally an intimate reception to end with a beach party in Villefranche sur Mer.

We decided to set all the moments outdoors, among the wonderful Chateau de La Chèvre d’Or, where we imagined the scene of the ceremony under the little temple, the beach and the cliffs of Cap Ferrat and the old medieval village of Eze Village, where we set the reception table.

As for the bride dresses we wanted something graceful and elegant, made with luxurious fabrics. So together with Silvia and Sara, owners of the atelier La Maison du Mariage, we chose the impalpable fabrics and flattering shapes of the dresses of Leila Hafzi, ethical and eco conscious fashion brand, and the French lace of a cape from Alberta Ferretti. Then we introduced Roma, a brand new collection of romantic and retrò swimsuits thought for the honeymoon, that we imagined for the morning walk on the beach (the intimate bay called Anse des Fossettes, in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat). Roma is a line of costumes conceived for day-dreamer women, designed and created exclusively for La Maison du Mariage, that aims to offer the bride a romantic and sensual vision of one of the honeymoon essentials, the bikini.

Carmelo Spina, the hair stylist and make up artist, thought about a specific hairdo for each scene, always trying to follow the inspiration mood. So for the bikini photos he proposed a high ponytail embellished with a flower and a nude makeup, then for the ceremony he created an up-do with a half braided crown and finally for the beach party he designed the most amazing romantic and messy up-do with a flower crown used like an headband paired with a luminous makeup with a touch of pale blue under the eyes.

From Margherita OrlandiAs soon as I decided to start this project together with the wonderful Marta Guenzi Photographer, my mind began to think about those fascinating places that were to me the perfect inspiration for a shooting full of little details following the fil rouge of the French elegance. For the bouquet and the table flowers we decided, in accordance with Maurizio Buzzi, the flower designer, to work with the bright and pastel colors of peonies, freesias, David Austin roses, buttercups, lilies, eucalyptus and echeveria with their particular silver shade that gave a light tone to the compositions. Then we added some pink grapefruits to achieve a feeling of freshness. We prepared a white little “table for two” that we decorated with a runner in toile de Jouy fabric, one of the most ancient and typical production of French Rivera artisans. We used the leitmotif of toile also for the graphic suite scanning the cloth and extrapolating the drawings to match with the save the date, the map, the menu, the invitations, etc.

I loved planning and coordinating this shooting in one of my soul places and I hope this could inspire couples dreaming to get married in such a wonderful location!

“Believe there is a great power silently working all things for good, behave yourself and never mind the rest.” – Beatrix Potter, The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Beatrix Potter not only had a few lessons to teach the little ones, but as adults, it might be in our favor to remember to “behave (ourselves) and never mind the rest.” Every once in a while, we can use little reminders and wise words that are hidden within fairy tales. Aside from the food for thought, The Tale of Peter Rabbit just happens to make the most adorable first birthday party theme.

When you take a super cute theme like this one and combine it with the powers of Christine of Fancy That! Events, you get another pin-worthy Fancy event with too many sweet details to count.

We’ve had the pleasure of documenting Nathan grow since our first photo session when he was only a few days old. With the collaborative efforts of so many amazing vendors, “The Tale of Nathan’s First Year” definitely celebrated the big ONE in style.

Bouquet Breakdown: Intimate Sunstone Vineyards Wedding

Sarah Winward speaks our love language. Rough translation, she has a way with florals that truly delights. Take this handful of blush blooms paired with creamy roses as proof, it’s pure bliss. Because once you take one look at said posy below and you’ll be all heart eyes. See it all below!

Intimate Sunstone Vineyards Wedding

  • Distant Drum rose
  • Queen of Sweden Rose
  • Fair Bianca Rose
  • Metallina rose
  • Japanese anemone
  • Pieris
  • Varigated Wigella
  • Jasmine vine
  • Ninebark foliage

From Sarah WinwardEveryone loves a blush and white color palette, and it is made easier when all of the beautiful outdoor garden roses are in season! I used some of my favorite soft and muddy pink colored roses in this bouquet for my bride who wanted a lush, feminine bouquet. This bride’s dress was the mostbeautiful shade of champagne so we wanted to make sure to compliment her dress. I tend to like a lot of foliage, so I used a variety of variegated, dark colored foliage, and vines here to give her bouquet texture and a wild shape. We draped it with yards and yards of silk ribbon to give it softness and movement while she walked down the aisle.

#SMPWedding101 – Bridesmaid Gifting Advice + Ideas

I always prided myself on my ability to find those really thoughtful gifts, but then along came Natalie Pinney and Moira Thompson of Whim Events, and well, these ladies know what they’re doing. After seeing a shift in the approach to bridal party gifting, with more and more couples requesting them to source super sentimental gifts to ensure appreciation is felt, these ladies are pro’s at picking the perfect presents. See their ideas below and get ready to get shopping!

Make It a “Morning of” Experience: Brunch + Bubbly

One of the worst things we see when we walk into a bridal suite the morning of a wedding is a messy and unorganized environment to get ready: takeout food on every surface, makeup and curling irons on the bed, undergarments strewn about and ten girls trying to get dressed at once. The best way to treat your ladies is to create a morning that is relaxed, pampering and spa-like. Ensure the room is large enough for your squad. Or get two rooms- one standard room with great light for hair and makeup, and one larger suite with a couch and table for brunching and relaxing. Plan for a champagne brunch to be delivered to your suite that morning, (our friends at Wanderlush provide a pop-up mimosa bar!) along with bagels, coffee, pastries, fruit, water and snacks for the day. Turn on a party playlist or your favorite chill music, whatever suites you best! You might not think of this as a “gift” now, but on the wedding day, trust us, your ladies will thank you.

Make It Sentimental

Your friends have stood by you through the good times and the bad, so asking them to be by your side at the altar is a sacred and emotional experience. Show how much you cherish them by giving them something heartfelt to last for years beyond the wedding day. We are currently loving the idea of bringing back the tried and true tradition of engraved handkerchiefs. They are lovely, lady-like and feminine. Our favorites are The Everyday Handkerchief, made locally in Boston with organic linen and hand-engraved with initials or a full monogram. We are also coveting this Kate Spade bracelet, affectionately inscribed with “perfect pair, two of a kind, birds of a feather, sidekicks, etc.”

or… Make It Practical

With that said, here comes the old bridesmaid’s dress joke you want to avoid when gifting (“You can totally wear it again!” said no neon pink clad bridesmaid, ever). If you are more interested in practicality over sentiment, look for something they will want to use often, but would not necessarily treat themselves to. Silk robes are super popular right now (and gorgeous) but we are also loving the idea of practical and cozy pajamas like these from J.Crew, or these floral shortie sets from Plum Pretty Sugar. These sets can be worn while getting ready and certainly contribute to a spa-like feeling of luxury. If you want to go the the well loved route of giving jewelry, be sure you choose a versatile piece that can be worn at the wedding with any neckline and/or at the office later that week! We are loving these simple Elizabeth Bower earrings, sold online and at Flair Boston, because they truly go with everything.

Make It Personal and Thoughtful

By personal, we don’t mean you need to monogram every gift you give. Simply take the time to write something personal to your wedding party members in a thank you note that accompanies the gift. It doesn’t have to be a novel, a few short sentences about why you love them, or your favorite memory will go a long way. We love these photos cards from Artifact Uprising. With these, you are able to select your favorite picture of the two of you, making it all the more special. If you are not loving the idea of hand-writing several notes yourself, ask a calligrapher to hand-letter a note to each gal, which also makes a stunning and thoughtful keepsake.

Make It Pretty

Thoughtful gifting is all in the delivery. Deliver your gifts in thoughtful and unexpected ways. For one of our couples, we came into the bridal suite the night before and set up a gorgeous styled gift area for the girls to walk into the morning of. Each gift was wrapped in pretty paper and set on a vintage tray, with a calligraphed name tag for each girl. In another situation, we came up with the idea for our bride to gift her maids with sparkly Toms shoes (aka “dancing shoes!”). We set up each pair on their chairs at the wedding with a calligraphed note from the bride – a fun and unexpected surprise later in the evening!

ps…Don’t Forget The Boys!

Grooms gotta gift too! And practical gifts almost always win here. (Not many groomsmen will ever need a pocket watch, so nix it). We recommend first thinking about what these men are into. Ex. are they big sports fans, mountaineers, beer brewers, craft cocktail aficionados, etc? Once you have sense of their style, gift based on that. From personal experience, one of the best gifts my husband ever got when in a wedding was a large fabric monogrammed drink cooler. We use it every weekend at the beach! Another great gift for the sports fan is a jersey from their favorite team. For the cocktail lovers, these super funny (and hilariously labeled) cocktail mixers from White Whale are a hit. And, if you simply want the guys to match on the wedding day, a simple and versatile tie and clip from the Tie Bar makes for a dashing crew.

Whimsical + Botanical Franciscan Gardens Wedding Inspiration

I’ve had the honor of meeting two of the lovely ladies who crafted this slice of beauty you’re about to devour. And their talent combined? It’s insane to the max. That’d be Tory of Smith + James Events at the planning and design helm and Valentina Glidden behind the lens. Every corner of this botanical whimsy at Franciscan Gardens is waiting to inspire, including paper pretties by Plume Calligraphy and tabletop perfection from Borrowed Blu and Plenty Of Petals. Dive into The Vault for more!

From Smith + James EventsFor this shoot, we were inspired by the garden venue nearby the Mission San Juan Capistrano, the Franciscan Gardens. The Mission is such a dreamlike venue, and we loved how the nearby Franciscan Gardens merged a sense of botanical whimsy with the Old World beauty of the mission. The juxtaposition inspired us to create a little bit of a moody, ethereal vibe.

Valentina Glidden has such a way with the camera. She’s so good at capturing the beauty in everything and is such fun to work with. She really has her own voice as a photographer and her own confidence instills confidence in the creatives around her. It’s an invaluable trait for a photographer.

Kasia with Plenty of Petals created such romance with this bouquet. We’re so not over the big dreamy bouquet craze yet and may never be! The way Kasia played with dimension and utilized different blooms in the centerpiece takes such a trained talent. We love a good oversized centerpiece and this one really made us all fall in love! We will never get enough of moody, romantic blooms.

Aileen with Plume Calligraphy is incredible. Give her a little inspiration and she’ll knock your socks off, every single time. Her delicate hand-written invitations are really in a class of their own. They make everything feel so soft and delicate, from the handmade paper to the little details in each piece she creates.

Jess Wilcox always knows how to make a model look her best, and our model Brittany looked absolutely stunning…which brings me to the dress! The Carol Hannah Coralia dress from her Siren Call collection totally blew us all away. The lines of the dress are gorgeous and the way it moved was truly spectacular.

This shoot was easy breezy and fun to create. It was so lovely to spend a day strolling around the Mission and taking beautiful pictures. I hope it shows how much we enjoyed putting it together!
