Gorgeous Gowns + Rolling Waves Are Making Our Monday Magical

Let’s spend today at the beach, surrounded by bouquets and dresses that make our hearts beat faster by the minute. Ok, so maybe we all can’t do that literally, but with Koman Photography’s pics and Love & You Video’s clip, we can escape to our best abilities. Peony and Plum supplied the petals, Simply Sera Events coordinated it all and our Vault has the goods. Cheers to starting the week off so stylishly right.

From Simply Sera Events… We were inspired by the lush waves, grand cliffs, and the natural beauty of the beach and even more so by the custom Musat Bridal Couture gown designed for our shoot. The tulle skirt emulates the waves when they kiss the shores and the beaded lace bodice resembles the intricate design of seashells and pearls. We wanted to keep things simple yet rustic and elegant so we used metal chairs as our statement pieces and kept the rest of the table clean and included things you’d imagine to find at a beach such as coral, starfish, and a message in a bottle.

More beautiful beach inspiration here!

Enviable Wallpaper that Will Take Your Baby from Tot to Twenty

An extensive handmade doll collection and a room wrapped in whimsical wallpaper are the stuff that little girl’s dreams are made of (and maybe big girls too). How could you not love such a magical space crafted by Margie Doyle? It all started with that Sanctuary Wallpaper by Tyler Hall and the rest is dream nursery history. See even more snapped by Elza Photographie in the VAULT.

Juniper’s nursery was a joint project between myself (Raewyn, the girls’ mother), and Margie Doyle of Doyle Design. When I found out I was pregnant with Juniper we were just finishing renovating my Victorian home in Cabbagetown, a neighborhood in Toronto, Canada. Designing a second little girls’ room was just the icing on the cake of an already exciting project.

Our jumping off point for the room was the amazing “Sanctuary” wallpaper by Tyler Hall. I fell in love with its vintage, yet feminine feel. The rest of our house (which was featured in Style at Home’s May 2016 issue) incorporates many of the same soothing tones and colors. It is important to me that the entire house flows from room to room, kids rooms included.

My older daughter Olive (3 years) could not have been more excited to become a big sister, so we wanted to make the nursery a place that she could enjoy as well. The rocking sheep and the little library are elements added to make her feel comfortable and welcome. The cozy rug on the floor is the perfect place for the girls to curl up to “read” stories together. Olive is head over heels in love with her little sister, and she spends a lot of time with me in the nursery changing and dressing Juniper.

The fun details such as the deer head above the bed, the mobile above the change table, and the birdhouses above the bookshelf are all by Tamar Mogendorff. These elements play up the natural theme in the room, and add texture and depth to the space. These handmade pieces truly have an heirloom quality about them, and I think that they add to the vintage vibe that I was going for. A little tap of the birdcage during change time makes the job all that much easier.

We decided to keep the crib bedding more neutral, as the rest of the room felt so feminine. The soft grey Restoration Hardware linens work perfectly with the grey in the wallpaper. This paired with the deer head above the crib make for quite the statement when you first walk into the room.

Juniper and Olive have quite the extensive handmade doll collection. I have fallen in love with anything that has a story to tell, and these dolls do just the trick. Again, they play into the vintage feel of the room, and are just as beautiful to look at, as they are fun to play with. I believe that these are all pieces that will transition well into toddlerhood and beyond, and can potentially be treasures that they pass on to their own children one day.

We have truly created a space for the whole family to enjoy. It is a soothing place for Juniper to grow with just the right dose of fun injected into it. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

The Grooms’ Adorable Sons Help Make This Rustic Wedding So Sweet

You know how they say life is full of simple pleasures? Well, so is Justin and Darren’s Hudson Valley wedding. With understated design elements from Green Apple Weddings, like the natural ceremony decor and rustic tablescape, the two grooms and their adorable sons are what shine in this pretty day. See it all from Karen Wise Photography in The Vault!

From Green Apple WeddingsJustin and Darren chose to exchange their vows surrounded by verdant weeping willows at the incomparable Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa in Hudson Valley. The lush, rustic yet elegant location on the Hudson River inspired the design, which was based on the welcoming woods, orchard and gardens enveloping the Inn, as well as the modern barn which influenced their wooden invitations and where their welcome dinner was held.

Their ceremony was held at a duck pond with weeping willows as their backdrop. The couple was flanked by tall arrangements of flowering white branches while their guests witnessed the ceremony from Fruitwood chairs tied loosely with greens along the aisle.

After the ceremony guests walked under towering, yet inviting trees to cocktail hour where oak barrels served as tables. Seating assignments were hung from natural twine by clothespins.

Just before sunset the guests were led into a sailcloth tent draped with cafe lights open to views of the Hudson River. They were seated in natural wood crossback chairs at farm tables laid with burlap runners. Sprigs of rosemary laid atop white linen napkins which held menus and were loosely tied with brown suede. Multiple small centerpieces with greens and flowers in shades of sunset lined the tables along with mercury glass votives whose candlelight reflected off the soft amber glassware.

From Karen Wise PhotographyI am thrilled to share this romantic and stylish Buttermilk Falls Inn wedding. Justin and Darren were dream clients – they were laid back, stylish and so fun-loving!

It was so sweet to witness how they considered the participation of their two young sons, Luke and Jake, in all their wedding festivities. Jake and Luke were included in Justin and Darren’s getting ready session, in their ceremony, and even in cocktail hour when they got to chase ducks and pick apples in Buttermilk Farm’s orchard. They even enjoyed holding a custom made Thank you sign for pictures which the couple would later print for their thank you cards.

They trusted me and gave me a lot of creative freedom within their itinerary. The palette of vibrant orange and peach dahlias and ranunculus, alongside the verdant green of the lush summer grasses, and the grooms’ handsome blue attire inspired unlimited picture-taking.

Forget Favors – This Couple Gave Back to the Cause that Brought Them Together

Reading what this Bride said about her big day, you can tell she and her Groom are a special pair. In lieu of favors, they donated a backpack to United in Harmony’s Camp Harmony, a camp for homeless children in the LA area. Trust us, one look at ART IS FOR LOVERS‘ photos in The Vault, and you’ll be as in love with this day as we are. (It doesn’t hurt that amazing vendors like Stephanie Grace DesignsThe Butter End CakeryFiore BeautyJenny Yoo and Casa de Perrin were part of it!)

From The Bride…I think, for us, it was most important that the wedding felt authentic and full of love. We are both very real people, and though we love to dress up, dance, and throw a big party – we wanted the wedding, at its core, to feel intimate, authentic, and reflective of our personalities. For us, that began with the ceremony and our officiant. Rabbi Steven Carr-Reuben is the same man that stood next to me at my bat-mitzvah a decade prior to our wedding. I have known him my entire life, and there is no one I would rather have marry me. James spent a great deal of time getting to know Rabbi Reuben leading up to the wedding, discussing the details of our ceremony and learning more about each other. Rabbi Reuben allowed the wedding to be 100% authentically us, even allowing us to write our own translation of the Shevah Brachot (the seven blessings). By the time our wedding rolled around, he knew each of us and our relationship so well that it brought a level of intimacy to our ceremony we could only have dreamt of. Countless people came up to us afterwards and commented on how incredibly genuine his words were, and how intimate and personalized the ceremony felt.

Another great example of how the wedding reflected our personalities were the “favors” for attendees. To us, it just didn’t feel right to have everyone walk away at the end of the night with a cute box of macarons or miniature bottle of champagne. As much as we love dessert, they had already had cake…And as much as we love champagne, I don’t think it would be airline-approved for their carry-ons! So, after much thought, in lieu of favors, we decided to donate to the non-profit organization where James and I met volunteering four years prior. For every guest, one brand new school backpack was donated to a child at United in Harmony’s “Camp Harmony.” Camp Harmony is a twice yearly camp for homeless children from shelters all over Los Angeles county. The camp experience, completely free of cost, gives these children a break from the tension and stress of their daily lives and a place to play freely and build their self-esteem. Honestly, giving back has always been such a huge part of our lives, and that passion played a large part in us falling for each other… so, it made sense to us that donating to Camp Harmony would be the best possible way to celebrate our commitment to spend the rest of our lives together.

For me, the candles and flowers were the most important part of the design. I wanted the ceremony and reception to feel similar in overall atmosphere, but also have distinctly different details.

For the ceremony, which happened at sunset inside the lobby of RCC, I wanted minimal flowers and maximum candlelight. I loved the idea of a dramatic, romantic, intimate ceremony that was barely lit (only Sara could capture such great photos in such bad light!). The only color in the room was white, and the aisle was lined with stacks of floating candles of all different heights and scattered white rose petals. The huppah was taller than any huppah our design coordinator had ever helped create, and it was truly stunning. It had a chandelier inside, accented with flowers, and the entire thing was draped with white fabric, lending it an ethereal and magical quality. It was truly everything I imagined and more.

For the reception, I wanted a livelier feel, while still maintaining the elegance of the ceremony’s aesthetics. Instead of white linens we chose a slight gold/blush color that went ideally with our centerpieces and china. I know it’s traditional, but I just can’t stand tall centerpieces! You can’t see across the table and they imply a level of glamour that didn’t quite fit our style. Through various pinterest boards and many long conversations with Lisa and Stephanie (my floral design team), we were able to create beautiful and visually interesting centerpieces that had a mixture of florals and candles, all at varying heights. They pulled together the gold accents alongside the stunning china we rented from Casa De Perrin. The florals were mostly white, with a few light shades of green and blush. Stephanie helped me find the perfect balance between messy and elegant, because I didn’t want any of the arrangements to look too perfectly prepared.

The last little touch I am thrilled worked out, was the addition of lavender throughout the wedding. I absolutely adore lavender. I love the color, the scent, the calmness it creates…However, both my family and my coordinator were 95% sure it “just wasn’t going to work.” Luckily, I was able to convince them otherwise! In the end we had the bridesmaids walk down the aisle with bouquets made only of lavender. I have to give a special thanks to Lisa from Stephanie Grace Designs for helping me push my lavender agenda! I also decided to add just one sprig of lavender to each place setting, inside the black satin accent bow around the napkin and menu. It was subtle, but beautiful and smelled fantastic.

I think everyone’s experience is unique, so I would be hesitant to share much advice…I suppose, all I will say is this:

No matter what happens…whether you have to change your date and venue three months prior to the big day (yes, that actually happened to me!), or it pours on your wedding day and you have to move your cocktail hour inside (that happened to me too…), or too many sparklers get put in a vase and it literally shatters all over the floor (yup, you guessed it, happened to me as well), all that matters at the end of the day, and I mean all that matters, is who is at the end of the aisle. That sentiment, though we all logically know it’s true, often gets lost in the process of it all… the planning, the stress, the mishaps… but hold onto it and hold onto it tight. Remind yourself of it when things don’t go as planned, because trust me, they will often not go as planned. The love and commitment between you and your partner; that is what everyone has come to witness and to celebrate, not the seamlessly choreographed first dance or the perfect color peony.

*Warning: peonies are extremely finicky flowers, whatever shade it ends up being will be beautiful, and has a 95% chance of not being quite what you expected :)

My biggest highlight from the day was when we read our personal vows to each other during the ceremony. Unfortunately, I ruined every possible photo of the moment by bawling uncontrollably, but it was still magical. We didn’t share them before the ceremony, and were pleasantly surprised to hear how similar ours were to each other. We both share a belief that marriage, while wonderful, is also bound to be difficult. I love that we weren’t afraid to put that in our vows. To be vulnerable and real, to admit that it won’t all be rainbows and butterflies, but that regardless, we are ready to take on whatever comes our way. As cheesy as it sounds, those four minutes that felt like they lasted forever, and everyone around us just faded away. A large part of my schooling as a therapist is about being present; I had never felt so present (and so sure) in my life.

London’s calling and thanks to Amy Fanton Photography we’re answering its’ ring. For this stunning engagement session is fit for royalty and we’ve got it all to share. From their sweet downtown stroll, to the stunning scenery, we’ve got it all waiting for you in The Vault!

From Amy Fanton PhotographyI photographed this engagement session in the heart of Central London on several of my favorite cobblestone streets in Kensington. The goal of the engagement shoot was to create imagery that reflected the classic style of the couple and there was no better setting to frame them than the quaint Mews streets and grand limestone buildings that are so characteristic of central London. We spent the session playfully wandering the old streets of Kensington as I led the couple through a series of interactions that led to natural and authentic reactions and emotions. The bride to be wore a romantic creme colored Ted Baker dress paired with classic nude pumps while the groom to be looked dapper in a classic navy blazer. As the bride is a wedding photographer herself, it was a great honor to be asked to photograph their engagement! I photographed using a combination of film and digital to get the best of both worlds.

Classic Southern Elegance Done Oh-So-Right

Guys, this is classic southern elegance done so, soooo right.  From the lush blooms crafted by Branches to the absolutely breathtaking Harlinsdale Farm locale to the stunning stationery designed by Mariko Lamb, the beautiful, beautiful bride.  Think traditional beauty with a little side of rustic pretty, all captured perfectly by Brittany Conner.  See it all right here in THE VAULT.

From Brittany Conner… One was a humble leader, star athlete and Southern gentleman; the other was an adventurous traveler, outdoor enthusiast and free spirit. Three years ago, both of these Tennessee natives found themselves living in sunny Southern California by way of two very different paths.

Harlin was a captain in the Marine Corps and Mariko was a local newspaper reporter when their paths first crossed. Despite Harlin being scheduled to move back to Nashville a mere three months after meeting the girl of his dreams, he didn’t give up hope that the two could spend the rest of their lives together. Knowing that Mariko was an avid traveler, Harlin asked her to take a leap of faith and spend two weeks with him in New Zealand just a few months after they met. It was there that Mariko realized she had met a man who she could happily embark on the life’s next adventure together. The two moved back to Nashville shortly thereafter, and the rest is history.

Harlin and Mariko were married on June 6, 2015 in a rustic outdoor wedding ceremony at Harlinsdale Farm in Franklin, TN. The naturally stunning and historic site was a place where Harlin spent many years during his childhood breaking in colts and bailing hay on his grandfather’s old walking horse farm. It was there that Harlin learned about hard work, the value of a dollar and the importance of teamwork. It was also there that Harlin and Mariko would wed more than a decade later.

A Classic Southern Wedding Featuring Rustic Farm Décor and Timeless Country Club Elegance
Mariko believes that elegant simplicity combined with opportunities to have a rollicking good time is the key to a memorable wedding. The bride designed the textured black and white wedding invitations, program fans and stationery herself, while the groom selected the evening’s hottest entertainment to celebrate the night.

The rustic outdoor wedding ceremony centered on Harlinsdale Farm’s natural beauty with just a few white and champagne floral adornments. Bridesmaids were dressed in simple black strapless floor-length gowns, while groomsmen donned traditional black and white tuxedos. The two wed just as the sun set over the main barn in a beautiful twilight ceremony.

The wedding reception took place at the always stunning and elegant Belle Meade Country Club. White hydrangeas, roses and lilies fused with soft sparkling champagne accents, soft, subtle décor and lots of twinkling lights dressed the venue. The timeless elegance of the venue and décor exuded a classic Southern charm with a hint of modernity – just like the couple themselves.

#SMPWedding101 – 10 Questions to Ask a Band Before Hiring Them

Future hubby? Check. Sparkly ring? Check. Date and venue? Check and check. Great wedding band? Don’t sign along that dotted line just yet! Finding just the right band for your big day can be a bit overwhelming and before you put that deposit down, there are essential questions to cover. Boston Common Band has the 411 on what needs to be discussed before you start planning that first dance!

1. How would you describe the style of music you play + is there one particular genre you focus on?

Not all bands are built the same. Some groups specialize in rocking out to your favorite 90’s and Top 40 hits. Some might specialize in R&B Motown, while others are capable of playing a mixture of everything. But overall, it’s best to find a band that can cover more than one genre, as you want to ensure that guests of all ages feel included!

2) What do you play during Cocktail Hour?

Typically most bands quote for only the 4-hour Reception, with Cocktail Hour being an upcharge. Be sure to follow-up and ask if any instrumentation is provided, and if it’s an additional cost. Some groups will offer a soloist, whereas some groups can offer a jazz trio or quartet. Others may offer a simple iPod and Speaker-On- a-Stick option.

3) What music do you play during Dinner Hour?

Having the right music performed during Dinner Hour sets the tone for the party afterwards. While it might seem like a fun idea to have danceable music being performed, it often slows the dinner service down. You’ll find your guests shifting their focus to the dance floor, rather than eating the amazing food at their tables!

Top Tip:

Have your vendor meals served at the midpoint of your dinner service (the band can play a pre-programmed iPod song list). This allows your vendors who work through the end of the reception, to eat at the same time as you — and most importantly, they can get the party started earlier!

4) How do you handle music requests + will you learn a song or two for us?

Having the band perform ‘your’ song for the First Dance is always a special touch. Bands will typically provide you with a song list for you to choose songs and make suggestions for the dance party; though make sure they’re willing to learn at least one song for you!

Top Tip:

Bands usually have a great idea of the songs to be played to get your guests up and dancing. Instead of writing specific songs for the band to play, consider giving them a list of 10-20 suggestions. The band can then take these and create a diverse set list that caters to all age groups, and also plays a majority of your favorite tunes!

5) Do you take a break during the Dance Party – what happens during that time?

The party has been rockin’ for an hour… Now the band announces they’re going to take a quick break. What happens next will either buzzkill the party or hopefully keeps the party live and energetic until the band comes back to slay it for their 2nd set.

Most bands offer is a “CD / iPod” service, but a growing trend in some markets is for a band to offer a Live DJ combination. The DJ will take over during the band’s break, creating a complete party from start to finish. It also gives you the best of both worlds by having the energy that only a live band can offer, paired with the unlimited flexibility of songs a DJ can play.

Top Tip:

When you see a band that offers “Live DJ” services, be sure to ask them if it’s a real DJ that spins and beat-matches songs, or if it’s simply one of the band members that’s clicking songs from their iPod. There’s a huge difference between the two!

Okay, great! Your music is on lock – now for planning those intricate details!

6) How do we plan + coordinate our wedding formalities + details?

Most bands will offer a Word or PDF document to fill out; more advanced groups will offer online planning systems. Be sure that the band schedules consultation sessions to develop and review your wedding gameplan. Think of the band’s emcee like the Quarterback of your wedding and make sure they’re on the same page as you, the Head Coach!

7) What type of sound system do you offer?

Does your band have a scalable sound system that can cover small spaces as well as large venues? As you can imagine, a small speaker system isn’t enough for your 400 person ballroom… just the same as a 2000 watt speaker system is likely overkill for your cocktail hour. Bands with newer, digital sound systems offer the ability to “steer” the sound-energy and focus it on the dance-floor… right where you want it!

8) What type of lighting do you offer + do you have programmed scenes?

Lighting can dramatically impact the mood and overall atmosphere of your venue space. Many bands are now equipped with LED lighting systems, but few bands actually have programmed shows – i.e. it’s best not to have random color strobe effects happening when the band is in the middle of playing a heartfelt ballad! Top bands will have lighting “scenes” programmed by song, which will accentuate and elevate the energy of each song with gobo-pattern effects on the ceiling, walls, and dance floor.

9) Do you offer any other services besides music?

Being an entertainment provider can sometimes mean putting on a number of proverbial hats to thoroughly bring the party to the next level. It isn’t uncommon to find bands that offer additional services such as full venue uplighting, photobooth, staging /dance floors, etc… You’ll likely even find that booking with one entertainment vendor for multiple items, can save you money with “Package Discounts.”

10) Do you have any other vendor recommendations?

Believe it or not, wedding vendors get to work with each other quite frequently and can develop great relationships. Vendors typically know who’s-who in the scene… and can recommend the best people to work with. In other terms, when your vendors love working together, the end result is even better for YOU!

Say Hello To The Tropical Wedding of Your Dreams

What’s better than a destination wedding in Hawaii? How about a destination wedding in Hawaii straight from the talented lens of photographer Mirelle Carmichael. Graced with a crazy elegant seaside ceremony, lush landscaping, and of course a few tropical details (hello pineapple!). Sounds dreamy, right? Well you’re in luck because we’ve got all that and more waiting for you to favorite in The Vault!

From The Bride…On paper, a destination wedding would probably be the last thing that Gareth would ever choose to do to celebrate a marriage, much less a destination wedding in a place that he had never been to until 8 months before the actual wedding. Gareth is someone who very much likes his routines — he is the guy, according to his best man, who will “go into an ice cream shop with 31 flavors and come out with a double scoop of chocolate ice cream.” He is the simple, steady one in our relationship and doesn’t venture out of the norm very often.

And yet, as fate would have it, Gareth found himself miles from home on the beautiful island of Maui to celebrate one of the biggest days of his life. A destination wedding ended up to be perfectly fitting for Gareth & I. Gareth…born in Australia, raised in Singapore, and now living in the SF Bay Area…has spent countless hours traveling back and forth between Asia, Australia and the US… usually to attend weddings, visit family and catch up with old friends. So while he does prefer the homebody life, he also loves taking trips to visit family and friends. Maui seemed like a logical choice for Gareth because he thought many of his family and friends abroad would love to have an excuse to visit paradise. As for me, I grew up going on summer vacations to Maui with my family, and I know this definitely helped me develop a love for traveling that grew as I got older. Maui was an easy choice for us… for me, it was sentimental and reflected my love for travel…and for Gareth, it was a perfect intersection for his 3 different worlds.

My vision for the wedding was for it to be simple, sweet and romantic. I hope I achieved this, as most people know how you can get caught up in details, especially considering how easy it is to spend an entire evening pinning every little thing on Pinterest. Olowalu was amazing, and provided a perfect setting for our guests to watch a beautiful Hawaiian sunset while enjoying some cocktails. We loved the privacy of the estate too; it was like we were in our own little paradise wedding world! Our main colors were soft blues and greens with some pink and peach mixed in to add a little feminine touch. The table decorations consisted of white linens with a simple but elegant silk dupioni table runner. The centerpieces were made of white and pink roses with seashells and starfish throughout to give a subtle beach feel; they were nothing short of amazing and really added to the sweet and romantic feel I was hoping for.

Despite the endless months of planning and emails leading up to the wedding, Gareth and I look back on our wedding day with the fondest of memories. Of all of them, I would have to say my favorite memory would probably be during dinner…I remember looking out at our guests at their tables – friends and family from all parts of our lives, and thinking how they had set aside so much to be with us…I was truly touched. Both Gareth and I really wanted the wedding to reflect how grateful we were for everything in our lives. While we were excited to celebrate our marriage with our dearest friends and family, we also wanted the wedding to be our gift back to those who have supported us along the way, and who had traveled so far to be with us. Maui really ended up being the perfect place for Gareth & I and our guests. The general nature of weddings can often bring about feelings of chaos and stress, but there is just something different about the islands. During the ceremony, our dear officiant, Reverend Pia, reminded us of the spirit of aloha and that on the islands, love is reflected in all the beauty surrounding us. What a wonderful and true reminder that is!

A Love Story That Will Make You Believe in Serendipity

If you don’t believe in serendipity just wait until you read the story of Love and Specs. Not only are Maryal and Chris two of the cutest bloggers out there, but their chance meeting at a Phoenix restaurant is straight from a movie. Read on to hear how Chris tied in their story to the epic proposal and catch the entire desert-set engagement from Ashley Slater in the gallery.

Chris and my love story began one serendipitous Friday in September 2014. My very best friend in the whole world had come to visit me in Phoenix for a much-needed, long-awaited girls’ weekend. There was something so right about that night from the start. I had my best friend by my side, the weather in Phoenix was perfectly warm, and the air buzzed with happy energy.

As soon as we found ourselves lost in conversation, a chambray-clad, bespectacled and insanely handsome Chris walked over to the table, charmingly introduced himself as the restaurant’s general manager, apologized for our wait, and asked if he could get us drinks. After we ordered and Chris walked away, my friend immediately turned to me and said, “Mar, this guy is absolutely perfect for you” and for some reason, I felt so calm. I smiled and simply said, “Yep, that’s the one.”

When Chris came back to the table we all chatted, laughed and introduced ourselves in more detail, and I suddenly got this feeling deep down in my gut that this person would be a really important part of my life, for the rest of my life. And basically, we’ve been inseparable ever since that night.

Almost exactly one year and one month later, on the day I got back from a particularly frenzied and grueling work trip, Chris told me that he was taking me out for a dinner date night. While we were sitting at dinner, Chris kept checking his watch, and I thought it was so weird and a little bit unlike him. As dinner was winding down, Chris mentioned that he had to stop by “the restaurant” – which in our language means the restaurant Chris managed.

While we drove to the restaurant, Chris reminded me that one of the regulars of the restaurant was having their rehearsal dinner on the patio and that he had made sure that the staff pulled out all the stops to make the night really special for them… something he’d mentioned to me a couple of weeks before.

As we walked up to the restaurant, there was a huge trail of rose petals leading from the front door, out and around toward the back patio. We walked in, Chris held my hand and I thought to myself, “wow, they really did pull out all the stops for this couple. How awesome!” What I didn’t realize was that the rose petals were actually leading to the very table where we first met, and before I knew it Chris had turned around, gotten down on one knee and pulled out a ring. I was honestly and truly completely shocked and surprised. I was so tired, so out of it and so surprised that tears just started flowing and I still couldn’t wrap my mind around what was happening! After a few, “What the…” and a lot of ugly crying, I said yes and a huge group of our closest family and friends that Chris had secretly snuck into town without me knowing ran inside from the patio with excitement, and we spent the entire weekend celebrating.

Over the last year and a half, our life together has been a blur of falling madly in love, late nights spent filling each other in on our deepest fears and wildest dreams, our greatest failures and proudest triumphs, laughing until we cry, scrabble battles, moving in together, backyard BBQs, dancing barefoot in the living room, countless travels and adventures, hiking, biking, cooking, running, yoga dates, trying new restaurants, date nights galore, conquering (and being defeated by) house projects, starting a blog together, meeting (and loving) each other’s friends, getting engaged, merging our families, and now, planning our wedding.

Lately, we’ve found ourselves kind of stopping in our tracks and turning to each other in astonishment that we really found each other and get to spend the rest of our lives together, waking up morning after morning next to each other and filling our lives with endless adventures spent hand in hand. It’s a pretty incredible gift and one that neither of us will ever take for granted.

About the Engagement Session… When we were looking for a photographer to capture our big day and our love, among a sea of wedding photographers out there, Ashley Slater’s work spoke to us in a big way. Ashley shoots both film and digital, which was something that we really wanted incorporated into our wedding day snaps. Film photography just has such a romantic vibe, doesn’t it? It captures the world in its own totally unique way, and we loved the idea of weaving that into our wedding memories. As a photographer, Ashley has a very distinct, romantic and timeless look to her work, and that fit right in with what we’d been searching for in a wedding photog.

When we had our first phone call with Ashley, we initially thought that we’d have to scrap the whole “engagement pictures” thing because of the distance between us (Ashley lives and works primarily in Michigan, which happens to be where we’re tying this knot this summer!), but luckily Ashley’s one of the coolest, most game photographers we’ve ever met, and she insisted not only on flying all the way out to Arizona to shoot with us before the wedding but that it was going to be one epic sunset session in the desert. How could we say no to that? One other important component of our connection with Ashley was her willingness to strike a match and burn engagement photo tradition to the ground for a minute, and roll with us on the idea of doing something a little bit more fun and funky for our shoot, which really speaks to our sensibilities as a couple. What transpired is what you see in the snaps, which was just as much fun to dream up as it was to shoot. We wish we could have kept that gorgeous ’54 Chevy Belair we rented from Roscoe & Louie here in Phoenix and kept on cruisin’ into the sunset – that paint job is perfection!

When we got out to McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Fountain Hills, Arizona to shoot it was pretty much freezing outside with gale force winds… basically everything you don’t want while you’re shooting your intimate engagement pics, but Ashley trooped on like a total pro, snapped carefully and selectively, and the result is a set of images we’ll cherish for the rest of our lives. You can hardly tell that we were eating our hair for the majority of the shoot!

A Monet-Inspired Colored Palette + Vintage Details Bring the South of France to Southern California

If a picture is worth a thousand words, all I need to do is tell you to head to The Vault, because words don’t exist to describe this dreamy Monet-inspired wedding editorial from Jen Wojcik Photography and HauteFêtes Fine Weddings and Events. The embroidered ballgown is enough to make your heart skip a beat, and that’s just the beginning. Trust us, you don’t want to miss any of this pretty!

From HauteFêtes Fine Weddings & EventsAiry, sophisticated, French country romance is the mood we envisioned for this pretty spring shoot set in the beautiful grounds of Vista Valley Country Club in north San Diego County, captured to perfection by Jen Wojcik Photography. Infused with old world elegance – sun drenched stone walls and timeworn silver trays, a weathered wood cake stand and lavender filled rustic woven baskets – we wanted to capture an intimate wedding celebration inspired by and bathed in the warm light of Provence. We channeled French impressionist painter Claude Monet for our color palette, selecting soft Delft blue and gleaming rose-gold hues as our primaries. A stunning full skirted, floral Modern Trousseau gown cinched by a rose gold crystal belt and a handsome lavender blue Canali suit anchored the shoot. Our lovely bride emanated French femininity, with a low side swept pony tail and stunning shoulder length rose-gold and diamond earrings, while our groom was coolly sophisticated opting for an open collared, crisp white shirt which popped against the blue suit fabric. In keeping with the architecture of the region, authentic 18th century Provençal gates provided the perfect backdrop for our ceremony. Flanking our couple, roses and wildflowers seemingly plucked from the French countryside spilled over urn topped columns swathed in chiffon, designed by Flowers Made with Love. Not content with showcasing these stunning gates as only a ceremony backdrop, we decided to echo their graceful lines in the hand illustrated cover of the ceremony program, just one of the many exquisite elements that made up the invitation and signage suite for the shoot, created by the talented Ampersand Collections. Further playing up the French countryside feel were the vintage china escort cards; little hand painted ceramic baskets with rose gold lettering, filled with tiny rose buds and pepper berry. For our table setting, we picked a grey sweetheart table and love seat upholstered in French linen, as well as two grey wicker-backed chairs from Rhapsody rentals that well could have come from a brocante in the South of France itself. Vintage French blue and white glass plates topped with copper leaf cut glass salad bowls were paired with Crate & Barrel rose gold flatware, dainty Limoges salt and pepper pots, Hostess Haven crystal, and delicate taper candles in vintage glass and copper candle holders, all set amid a wild and sprawling flower arrangement. Twine-wrapped napkins tucked with sprigs of lavender, place names hand calligraphed in rose gold ink, and a billowing pale blue chiffon runner completed our romantic table top. For our dessert bar, we styled a two tiered cake around which we tied a simple bow of the dreamiest Silk and Willow ribbon, rose scented macarons, and beautifully hand painted Delft-tile like cookies from Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. In contrast to the carefully restrained dessert table, the cheese and charcuterie spread was piled high with abandon, layers of fruit and nuts, salume and olives, and rustic French bread in homage to the goodness of the French countryside.

Attending a Summer Wedding? Make this Braided Bun Your Go-to

The social calendar is booking up for Summer weddings and a great way to get the most mileage out of this season’s party dress is changing up your go-to hairstyle and accessories. Killer dress, braided bun and your favorite heels. Shhh, you totally know my summer wedding playbook now. Get the skinny on this easy braided updo from Face Time Beauty + Judy Pak and prepare to be the bell of the ball.

Start with hair brushed out really well and all ends detangled (this will make braiding MUCH easier).

Create two ponytails. One on top and one on bottom.

Pick a pony to start with and either create a regular braid or fishtail braid (shone here).

Braid all the way down and secure with an elastic (the tighter the braid is, the more “intricate” the undo will look.) To modernize and texturize, pull braid from a small section at ends of hair and push elastic up so it “scrunches” the braid.

Repeat this on the top braid so you have 2 secured, “scrunched” braids.

Take the top braid and fold so the ends of the hair go under and then pull to pop out a little thru top of head right in front of the elastic and secure with a bobby pin.

Take bottom braid and wrap it around the folded top braid and secure wherever needed.

Let hair fall into place and separate braids apart as desired (the more separation, the less structured the undo will feel.).

We Played With Diamonds in Vegas And Here’s What Happened

If there’s one thing I learned at JCK Las V egas last week (a.k.a. heaven), it’s that a picture can’t do justice to a gorgeous engagement ring, especially one from Scott Kay. With exquisite, sparkly details from every angle, every one of Scott Kay‘s rings are beautiful, but they’re aren’t just another pretty piece of jewelry — each ring, from any one of his six signature collections, represents love, marriage and #ALifeTogether!

As I walked through the Scott Kay lounge, I couldn’t help but get a little snap happy with my phone’s camera. I mean you try walking through a room full of gorgeous diamonds without stopping to take a picture of each and every one. But as I flipped through my pictures later that night, I realized that no picture could capture all the beautiful details on a Scott Kay ring. If I took a birds-eye-view photo of the ring on my finger, you missed out on the intricate designs on the ring’s profile that give it a major “wow” factor unlike any other. And if I took a picture of the profile view, you couldn’t appreciate the signature Scott Kay sparkle.

So, what’s a girl to do? Head into one of Scott Kay‘s retailers to try on the dazzling diamonds for yourself!
