6 Ways to Get The “Bridesmaid of the Year” Title

Congrats! You’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid, and it’s not something you should take lightly, in fact, it’s a huge honor. It means the bride can’t imagine tying the knot without you by her side. So yes, major deal. Not sure what you’re supposed to be doing? Here’s how to be the best bridesmaid ever:

Offer to help
While the maid of honor is officially the bride’s right-hand woman, she’ll have her own to-do list, such as organizing the bachelorette party and bridal shower. This is a good time for you to swoop in and ask if the bride needs anything. Does she need your help researching vendors? Are you good at crunching numbers? Maybe she needs your help dividing up her budget. If you’ve got an eye for fashion you can put together a Pinterest board of bridesmaid dress ideas. Even if you don’t end up helping her with any wedding tasks, she’ll still feel your support.

Share ideas
If you come across a cool cake on Instagram or an eye-catching tablescape, send it over to the bride! She may not be on that step of planning yet, but she’ll appreciate having inspo handy when it’s time to get to work on those tasks. Start following some wedding planners on Instagram and keep an eye out for anything that you think the bride will totally swoon over. If she doesn’t use any of your suggestions, at least she knows you’re excited about the big day.

Be supportive
It’s pretty much a guarantee that the bride is going to get pretty stressed out at a certain point (or points). To-do lists will be a mile long and the stress of dealing with family can start to boil up. This is one of the most important times for you to be there for her. Calm her down and put things in perspective for her by reminding her that no matter what, at the end of the day, she’ll get to marry the love of her life. This may seem obvious, but once you’re knee-deep in logistics, sometimes you need a friend to remind you of what’s important.

Stay positive
Remember, this wedding isn’t about you. You and the other bridesmaids were chosen to support and celebrate the bride during this time, not critique her choices. If there are certain aspects of the wedding or bachelorette party you don’t necessarily like, keep it to yourself. Nothing good will come of you saying “when I get married I’ll do this instead.” Complaining and creating unnecessary drama will not only take the attention away from the bride, but create tension within the bridal party. Enjoy yourself, have fun, and save the drama for the Housewives.

Get to know the other bridesmaids
Chances are you won’t know every single person in the bridal party, so make the effort to get to know the bride’s other friends. The bride is obviously very important in all of your lives so it shouldn’t be too hard to get along with them. Make an effort to meet up before the bachelorette party, if possible, so by the time you head out of town to celebrate, you’re familiar with the girls you’ll be spending the weekend with. If that’s not possible, at least initiate a text group so you can learn names before you go. Who knows, maybe you’ll come out of the wedding with new lifelong friends!

Communicate
If an issue arises within the bridal party or you’re facing another problem related to the wedding (ex. budget), talk to the bride. She’s clearly one of your closest confidants and you should feel comfortable discussing things with her. Be sure to focus on how the issue affects you and avoid using phrases such as “this wedding is” or “so and so is rude”. Instead, focus on your feelings and try to convey them to the bride gently without creating too much commotion. The bride already has a lot on her plate so try to work it out before going to her with any kind of issue.

Following these six rules will undoubtedly earn you “Bridesmaid of the Year”, and your bride will be so happy she asked you to be a part of her big day.

Garden Ballroom Romance Is a Wedding Style + This Is How You Do It

Determined to create a romantic garden feel for their Scottsdale nuptials, this couple enlisted the help of Victoria Canada Weddings + Events and Carte Blanche Design, and the result is a ceremony overlooking Camelback Mountain that feels almost enchanted followed by a romantic, ballroom wedding completely transformed by tons of gorgeous florals. It’s all waiting for you right here, thanks to Melissa Jill Photography.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/225622408 600 338]

From the bride… We wanted our guests to feel like they were coming in town for a “desert escape,” and not just for a wedding. Our guests got to really feel relaxed and pampered. One of our guests told us that our wedding felt more like a vacation to him and his wife. We loved hearing that.

I am obsessed with flowers! I always have to have fresh flowers in the kitchen and living room, so I really wanted flowers to be a huge part of our wedding. I wanted the feel of the florals to be very soft and romantic, with lots of greenery, white, ivory, and blush. All of my wedding dreams came true – we were able to truly showcase the desert during our ceremony and cocktail hour while also adding in a total garden feel with tons of flowers everywhere. The garden didn’t stop there though, as we transformed a traditional ballroom into what felt like an indoor garden.

I think what made our wedding unique were the personal touches that both Jon and I wanted incorporated as well as the attention to detail that was executed by Victoria and her team. For example, our wedding combined the feeling of an enchanted garden with elegance, such as in the watercolor paper products featuring calligraphy. We even had a custom watercolor sign incorporating our labrodoodle, Wrigley, that we used for our signature cocktail.

One of our most favorite moments of the reception was when The JJ’s (our INCREDIBLE, FUN, ENGAGING, ALL AROUND AMAZING band) called Jon and I up on stage for the song “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. It was so exhilarating to be up on stage with them and looking out at all of our guests.

Jon and I decided not to write our own vows for the ceremony and instead decided to write notes to each other to read before our first look. Reading his note to me (which was more like vows) was more emotional than I thought and made me just that much more excited for our first look. I also decided to write notes to my mom and dad the morning of the wedding, and writing to them and then giving them the notes was also particularly emotional for me.

From Victoria Canada Weddings + EventsUpon arrival, guests were greeted with a one-of-a-kind desert themed welcome bag. Guests were given custom watercolor maps that outlined the different locations for the wedding weekend and areas that guests may want to visit. The bag included mini chips and salsa from a local company, an artisan cactus shaped cookie from Ruze Cake House, mini Arizona sunscreen, and even a recovery kit in a custom bag with the State of Arizona. That was just the beginning of the personal, unique touches that Alison and Jon envisioned to make their wedding a one-of-a-kind experience for them and their guests.

In order to create the overall enchanted garden feeling, we knew that we had to go above and beyond with the floral accents throughout. From the luxurious chuppah to the oversized centerpieces placed on guests’ tables, guests truly felt like they escaped the desert and entered a garden. The lush and opulent florals in front of the band made the dance floor extra special. Tables were adorned with a blue velvet linen from La Tavola that displayed a subtle pattern. The head table and cake table had a blush underlay with an exquisite sequined overlay.

From Melissa Jill PhotographyJon and Alison’s story is a modern-day fairytale romance! They first “met” when they matched on a dating app. Jon reached out and Alison replied, but due to some technology issues, Jon didn’t receive her message. That could have been the end of the story…just another missed connection. But it wasn’t! A short time later, the two matched on a completely different dating app. Talk about a sign, right?! Jon and Alison started talking and made a date to meet in person. It was supposed to be a low-key date for just drinks, but they clicked instantly. Drinks turned into dinner and hours of conversation. Jon drove Alison home that evening, and as he pulled away from her door, he knew – he’d just met the woman he was going to marry!

From the Florals to the Tabletops, This Sonoma Celebration Pops With Chic Color!

It may still be winter (and cold and drab in most locales) but this Sonoma celebration has us dreaming of warmer weather and sunshine with all the bursts of beautiful color captured by Emily March. A Savvy Event designed and planned this fete full of fabulous hues from the flowers to the tabletops and everything in between. Escape the chilly reality all around and dive headfirst into this smile-filled summer treat right this way!

Vineyard

From Emily March Photography… DC natives Erica and Dan fell in love with Sonoma during their first visit, picked their wedding venue during the second, and got married during the third. Sonoma’s charm and beauty are undeniable, and that’s part of what makes this area so prefect for celebrations.

The wonderful team at A Savvy Event designed and executed an event that will forever be one of my favorites. They brought together the relaxed nature of California and subtle elegance of East Coast affairs seamlessly. Pops of bright florals provided bits of color everywhere – from the elaborate ceremony arch to the intimate tables set beside the vineyards. The florals designed by Julie Stevens are truly some of my favorites that I’ve photographed!

Family and cultural traditions were also not lacking. The lasso and arras (exchanging of gold coins) ceremonies are classic Spanish traditions and symbolize the couple becoming one and sharing all their earthly possessions. They were beautiful details and I loved styling them with the simple and sophisticated wedding invitations. Dan’s family also celebrates new marriages with a shot of whiskey immediately after the ceremony, which definitely got the reception off on the right foot!

Guests dined al fresco beneath a clear blue sky, and, as always, Ramekins Catering served a meal that was as beautiful as it was tasty. With the end of dinner, family and friends moved inside for cake and dancing set beneath crystal chandeliers.

Erica and Dan’s friendly personalities made them a dream to photograph. I absolutely loved whisking them off into the vineyards for portraits and the light at their wedding was the stuff of dreams. These two are absolute gems and it was so, so fun to be a part of their wedding!

A Clean Eating Lunch Party

For anyone that is currently fighting your way through a healthy eating resolution (why do we do this to ourselves?!?!), know that it doesn’t have to be all kale and water. The ladies of Beijos Events are proving that healthy can be downright scrumptious. They teamed up with Julie Wheeler and True Food Kitchen for a Ladies Lunch filled with healthy bites and a guacamole recipe that wins all the awards.

With the start of a New Year most of us are in the mind set to be healthy.  It’s always a challenge, especially when going out into social gatherings.  Finding a yummy yet healthy place to eat out and get together with friends can be tricky, except if you go to True Food Kitchen!

This is one of my favorite spots to eat because of their fresh and healthy menu and their vibrant atmosphere.  I even have their cookbook in my arsenal at home and often turn to it for inspiration!

My friend Julia Wheeler and I wanted to get a few of our friends together to have a healthy ladies lunch and immediately thought of True Food Kitchen.  They have an amazing private room for events that was the perfect space for us to host!

It’s picturesque and colorful, we just had to add a few personal touches to the table to make it even better!  We wanted the colors of the table to reflect the vibrance of the food!  Special thank you to our talented friends Twinkle & Toast, Wallflower Inspiration and Hostess Haven for making this table come life!

It was great to catch up with friends after the hustle and bustle of the holidays, and none of us had to feel guilty with their delicious and healthy menu.  We even had a private tutorial on how to make the best guacamole I’ve ever tasted!  And that’s saying a lot, because I LOVE guacamole!!

Lucky for you True Food is sharing the recipe with you today!  You may be saying, big deal, guacamole?!  But this one is a great way to add leafy greens and comes with a citrus twist!  Trust me, you’ll want to try it!!

From the groom…We met four years ago at a professional event at World Bank. We were both working there but in different organizations and happened to have mutual acquaintances. It was not love at first sight but a destiny. Ije was sitting on the opposite, strategic position in the conference room. A friend introduced us to each other and told Ije she stole my chair. She apologized and continued apologizing afterwards. I told her it was okay, but only if she had lunch with me. Some weeks later, we went out for lunch, in the best Indian restaurant in Washington.

From the bride… My first impression: He was very tall, very impressive when he walked into the room….and so charming. Our first date took us a couple of weeks. It was at a lovely Indian restaurant, a very expensive one. We had wine there, too. Time passed by. We met in April and had out first date in May. We also had a lot of smaller dates – jazz night, coffee, etc. Then we had a long distance relationship as I relocated. We kept meeting half way in cities in between. That’s how we ended up in Vienna.

It was clear to us that we needed not only a wedding planner but also a designer, and A Very Beloved Wedding is the perfect team for this. They captured our essence and made the wedding style ours: classic, elegant, rhythmic, and fun. Our wedding was, of course, imperial as we got married in one of the most imperial cities of Europe: Vienna. Our cake was made by the royal patisserie, and our décor was historic and timeless. Vienna is the hidden gem of Europe for us. We fell in love with the city and of course with each other on one of our visits. From then on we knew, we had to get married in Vienna.

3 Things to Understand Before You Book Your Wedding Photographer

Picking your wedding photographer is one of the most important vendor decisions you will make! When the wedding is over, you and your husband will look at these photos for years to come to relive the magic of the day and share with loved ones.

While a great start to finding photographers is looking through posts of previous weddings they’ve shot, there are a couple of questions and answers you might not know you need to ensure you get the photographer of your dreams!

We asked photographer Jackie of Whiskers & Willows Photography to give us three important things you should ALWAYS ask and understand before deciding on your wedding photographer.

Asking to see a full gallery is a must
“Most photographers curate their brand heavily. Rightfully so, as it captures your attention and draws you in, and instantly tells you exactly what that photographer’s style is. However, they may not always show nighttime flash photography or family photos in their portfolio so it’s important to be able to see a full gallery to get a sense of what you can expect throughout an entire wedding day.”

Understand why a photographer does what he/she does.
“Make sure to ask why they do what they do and what they are passionate about. And that answer may resonate well with you or it may not. If you are a bride who relishes in the fine details of her day, and wants to get her wedding published in a magazine, then a photographer who can speak to their passion for editorial style imagery might be a good fit for you.”

“If you want a photographer who can step back and survey the scene to capture candid moments, then a documentary style photographer who can speak to this aspect of a wedding day might be right up your alley. Of course, there will be a spectrum of styles. But asking this question can at least help you narrow down your fit.”

Get a sense of how you will work together
“Photographers must make their couples feel relaxed in front of the camera, and so it’s so important to get a sense of how a photographer will work with you. Some photographers might have a certain way that they direct clients in portrait sessions. Others might take a more hands-off approach. If you feel you might need a lot of direction, it might be good to find a photographer who is going to give that to you.”

“There are many more questions that should be asked but aren’t deal breakers, like pricing and turnaround time, film vs digital, etc. But the main goal is to identify if you resonate with the work and can trust that what you see is what you will get. And you want to be able to resonate with the photographer at a personal level!”

Bottom Line

“The two biggest things to learn about a photographer before booking are style and personality. I think by asking to see a full gallery, researching all of the photographer’s curated portfolio on their website and Instagram, and chatting with them in person, video call, or phone call are the main things that are necessary to get at. Do you trust this photographer’s vision, aesthetic, and work enough to invest and can you hang out with this person all day long on your big day?”

This Bride Had A Vision For Her Wedding… And We LOVE How It Came Out!

This Bride may have been on the younger side, but she knew what she wanted when it came time for her wedding. And her vision came to life picture perfectly. An elegant color palette of black, white and green, florals galore and lots of little personal touches made for a wedding to remember. Lucy Munoz captured the special ceremony moments and all the smiles and shine that came after at the “elegant meets modern” reception. See more below and all the pics in our gallery right this way!

Colors

From the Bride… Tyler and I wanted a romantic, timeless, and effortless look. I didn’t want the focus of the wedding to be on a theme but more of a representation of Tyler’s and I youthful yet sophisticated style. There’s nothing more beautiful then simplicity. The idea was to have a classic black and white palette while keeping a whimsical and natural aesthetic.

Our source of inspiration came from our hometown church. The color white is a symbol of purity, as well as respect and reverence. I always pictured a bed of white florals at Mary’s feet and taking a moment to pray with my husband before the conclusion of our ceremony and beginning our new life together. The most important aspect of our wedding was promising our lives to each other in front of all our loved ones, but most importantly in front of God. When I learned green symbolizes renewal and promise of new life the vision for our florals came easily. It had to be all white florals with overflowing romantic greenery! I envisioned simplistic white florals in clean lines with a mix of draping greenery.

We loved the idea of contrast. Tyler and I are pretty traditional, and yet we’re 25 and youthful. Old world elegance with a modern twist just seemed like the perfect fit for our wedding. The wedding party’s pop of black garments and having soft gold details throughout the venue would bring a balance to the vintage architecture and furniture selections. Exposed brick, and wooden elements throughout the reception such as our rectangular farm tables and custom arbor above our sweet heart table brought the natural look we desired. The mix of elegant florals, luxurious ivory linens, and creamy candle light painted the perfect picture in order to transport our guests into a romantic wonderland, but most importantly a night full of an immense amount of love, fun, and culture.

Tyler and I really wanted to add fun personal details sprinkled throughout our wedding and bring forward our youthful side and balance out the sophistication in the most simplistic ways. We figured everyone loves social media and will be sharing moments throughout the night. We had an illustration made of us as bride and groom and placed on a snapchat filter for our guests to have fun with. A yummy late night snack is a must, whether you’re young or old, a self-served s’mores bar will be approved by all. I dreamed about a classic black and white Photo Booth for all of our guests to leave with a memory at hand. Besides the 4×6 Photo Booth picture we wanted our favors to really express some of Tyler’s and I favorite things. We wanted our guests to leave with a piece of our culture, Portuguese(him) and Mexican(me) cookies in custom favor boxes paired with coffee beans from our favorite Bay Area coffee house made for the perfect wedding favors. Choosing our signature drinks came easily. Portuguese soda, Mexican cerveza or maybe our guests would want to try the bride’s choice of specialty drink, “My Ty” (see what I did there). The glow sticks waved on the dance floor and the perfect sparkler send off lit up the night in such a fun, beautiful way. It was the perfect kiss goodnight to our wedding.

Transforming the Art Institute Into a Modern English Garden

The Art Institute of Chicago with its contemporary, sleek design proved the perfect venue for a celebration inspired by a modern English garden. Planned by Estera Events, this day is awash with topiary greens and romantic garden blooms all crafted by Exquisite Designs. Take a peek at the stunning imagery by Kyle John Photography that’s putting a fresh twist on your typical garden wedding.

Alexis & Michael’s wedding design was perfectly balanced. For every modern and stark element inherent to the gorgeous Griffin Court, there was a romantic piece brought in to soften it up. The design direction was inspired by modern english gardens. Topiary greens mixed with organic foliage and floral. The floorplan of the room intentionally resembled that of an english garden as well. A mix of rounds and long rectangles, allowing guests to walk between the tables and experience the artful centerpieces and table top designs. The largest focal of the reception was the head table, which boasted a 45 foot long statement piece. Alexis & Michael were both such a treat to work with — from the design concept phase of their wedding through the actual wedding day, we had such a wonderful time working with them and seeing this beautiful project come to fruition was such a joy!

8 Ways to Take Your Valentine’s Day to the Next Level

Valentine’s Day proposals and weddings automatically come with a great big side of romance, but if you’re looking to up the ante just a tad, we’re here to help. Because nothing says taking it to the next level quite like a sparkly jewel, and we’ve got eight (yes, eight) rings that are sure to do just that.

Okay, so proposing on Valentine’s Day is a really big deal, but if the one you love is anxiously waiting for you to get down on that knee, you need to be seriously prepared. This year, we’re all about vintage-inspired pieces that will really make a statement. Here are some of our faves:

Vintage Swirl Diamond Engagement RingSo this one’s a no-brainer. The vintage-inspired details + stunning diamonds most definitely have that wow factor, plus it showcases 56 brilliant round diamonds AND the center stone of your choice. That’s a lot of sparkle, you guys.

Pavé-Set Diamond + Pink Sapphire Vintage Engagement Ring. What makes a vintage-inspired engagement ring even better? A pink sapphire. This one’s perfect for all of those ladies out there who are a bit untraditional, but still want something that’s ultra elegant. The halo of diamonds adds just the right amount of bling and those vintage details are super elegant.

Vintage Engagement Ring in Rose Gold. We never pass up a chance to stare longingly at a rose gold engagement ring, and this one is especially awesome. From the bezel-set diamonds to the milgrain detailing, it’s classic, refined and gorgeous. We’re lovin’ the choice of a pear-shaped diamond, but you can mix this up with whatever center stone you like.

Halo Diamond Vintage Engagement Ring in Rose Gold. 74 round pavé-set diamonds and an emerald center stone really make this vintage-inspired engagement ring stand out. We love, love, love the halo of diamonds and the unique, yet seriously elegant look of the double band. This one’s a winner for sure.

We love a Valentine’s Day wedding – the combo of a winter setting and Cupid’s Day is the definition of romantic. But if you want to add some additional amour to the proceedings, your wedding ring is definitely the place to do it. Looking for some good recs? We’ve got you covered.

Diamond Swirl Wedding Band with Pavé-Setting. 108 round pavé-set diamonds make up this gorgeous ring, so if you’re looking for something that will SHINE, this one’s it. We love the shimmer, and also the swirl design. This beauty will pair nicely with any engagement ring, and we love the versatility.

Round Diamond Wedding Band. Besides being effortlessly gorgeous, this sophisticated stunner is made of 14K rose gold with 15 round, bezel-set diamonds and an elegant milgrain detailing. We adore the simplistic, yet completely glamorous vibe. This is one ring you’ll absolutely love.

Vintage Round Diamond Wedding Band. Two-toned with shimmering round diamonds and breathtaking milgrain detailing, this gorgeous band would be perfect with a solitaire engagement ring… or a vintage-inspired stunner. We mentioned we adore those, right?

Diamond Halo Wedding Band. There’s just something about this halo wedding band that screams romance. Maybe it’s the 77 brilliant round diamonds, the elegant design or the beautiful rose gold. Our guess? A little bit of all of the above.

Wedding Suit Shopping Tips for Your Guy + His Groomsmen

You can’t wait to go pick out your wedding dress — but don’t forget your groom! What your man and his guys wear is an important piece of the overall wedding day look. Make sure he feels prepared when it comes to picking out his attire and guiding his groomsmen. Here are some simple shopping tips for the groom and his entourage.

Narrow down the type of attire.
White dresses for brides? Pretty standard. But there’s a lot more flexibility on the menswear side of things. Depending on the level of formality, your budget, and your man’s comfort level, you may want to consider the pros and cons of a tuxedo vs. a suit. Tuxedos are typically rented and for more formal occasions while suits can be purchased and give off a slightly more casual vibe. Suits also tend to fit better, since you can make alterations on them.

Get help from the experts.
Just like shopping brides have consultants, so should the grooms. A menswear expert can help men figure out proper sizing, fabric differences, and details like ties and cummerbunds. Don’t send your groom in there blind.

Get the timing right by having bridesmaids dresses selected first.
Female attire will typically take much longer to purchase and alter than male attire, and the color choice will be more obvious. So if you’re doing any tie-gown matching with bridesmaids, make sure you have your ladies outfits selected beforehand. You also want to match the formality level–you don’t want shimmery, floor-length bridesmaids gowns with a quirky suspenders-and-bowties attire for the groomsmen.

Don’t forget about alterations.
If you’re purchasing a suit, men will probably need at least minor alterations to make sure the fit is perfect. This is going to be the most photographed day of your life–you don’t want your guy to have sleeves that are too short or pants that are awkwardly long.

Allow some fun accessories.
Wacky socks or cufflinks make great groomsmen gifts and add a little personality to your groom’s overall wedding look.

From  the bride and groom… After stalking the weather apps for two weeks straight, we ended up with blue skies and a beautiful July day. We worked with some amazing vendors! We were obsessed with all the details – from the flowers to the specialty cocktails to the tablescapes and everything in between. A special day was made even more special by all the people who paid such great attention to executing the details. We were able to sneak away from the reception to just look at how it all unfolded and felt really lucky. It was a heck of a party, people knew to bring their dancing shoes. Now that the chaos is over, we are looking forward to life together and will always look back fondly on our amazing wedding day!

Rustic Meets Elegant For This Magical Mountain Wedding

Opposites sure do attract. Case in point, this darling duo and their magical mountain wedding. The Bride, a fan of pink and sparkles, met her match in her Groom, lover of all things outdoor. They created a wedding (with help from Kelly Karli Weddings and Events) that showcased both sides, a rustic elegant outdoor celebration complete with stunning views, gorgeous florals by Siloh Floral and beyond beautiful invitations thanks to The Delicate Pen. Laura Murray and Sherry Innis captured it all as further proof that a mix-match of aesthetics is always a good idea.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/229062714 600 338]

From The Delicate Pen… Amanda had always dreamed of her wedding being elegant, with effusive flowers and loads of pink and sparkles, but Cody, her husband to be, was the complete opposite, loving hunting and being outdoors. They both were in agreement on an outdoor wedding, however! Cody and Amanda were high school sweethearts and dated all through college, as well. They got married in Colorado, because Amanda had vacationed there as a child, and it is where Amanda went to college and where the couple got engaged. They both love to ski and hike and Beaver Creek became their getaway and sanctuary.

They chose a color palette of blush pink, sage green, champagne, beige and cream. All of Amanda’s directives to the stationer, the invitation designer and calligrapher, florist and event planner were to create a feel of romance, lightness, elegance, intimacy and softness. Amanda had to have her pink blush flowers, but the florist made boutonnieres of simple greenery, which was more Cody’s style.

Amanda fell in love with one of the first wedding dresses she tried on, made her invitation selection immediately, when she saw the hand lettered and hand painted invitations with blush flowers that she selected, and she only did one cake tasting before deciding on her cake.

Amanda’s favorite detail was the guest escort cards calligraphed and hand painted by The Delicate Pen, which were mounted on tall panels covered in flowered wall paper. She also loved the flowers by Siloh. She wanted flowers to be everywhere. She also wanted every detail of her wedding to be hand lettered, including professional calligraphy for every envelope mailed and each place card the day of the wedding.

Amanda’s sister made many DIY items for the wedding, including the chalk board signs with the Corinthians bible verse, and labels for the gifts Cody’s mother and Amanda worked all summer making homemade salsa and pickles as wedding day takeaways. Since pickles are Amanda’s favorite food and salsa has been something Cody’s mom has been making for years, they decided to combine the two. They had three types of salsa. Miller Mild, A&C Just right, and Pribble’s Fire, and the pickles were labeled, “Pickled since 2008” because Amanda and Cody started dating in 2008!

All of the flowers on her dress complemented the fresh flowers of the bouquets, and Amanda felt the best part about all of the wedding details, is that she really trusted in the creativity of the professionals and allowed them to do what they do best. She explained what she liked, and then allowed them to create!

Advice from Amanda: “Don’t micro manage everyone. Trust the people you’ve hired to do this job. They have done it a million times and know what they are doing. Show them your vision, give them ideas of what you like and create something together. They’ve seen enough to know what will and won’t work and it’s good to trust in them. Also remember this is your day, put a little extra into the things that mean most to you and your partner. My mom kept telling me to use dipped aspen leaves as a guest book. I kept saying no. Finally I just listened to her. It was a great decision because what I thought was an unnecessary expense is now a beautiful display in our house and a great memory that I can go through and look at anytime I want.”

This Hindu Celebration Is Everything We Love About Weddings + More!

We have one word for this Hindu celebration: YAS! It’s absolutely everything we love about weddings and more – gorgeous attire, fabulous accessories, an incredible bespoke collection of paper goods by Yao Cheng Design, stunning florals by Southern Blooms, plus photo after stunning photo of this adorable couple captured by Love by Serena. But it doesn’t end there! The film by East West Production is just as amazing – luckily for us, because we cannot get enough.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/196523768 600 338]

From Love by SerenaSneh and Kedar’s wedding celebration took place at the beautiful Keswick Hall in Charlottesville, Virginia. Their families gathered together from near and far – some traveling all the way from India for the festivities! From the gorgeous florals by Southern Blooms to the live ceremony painter they had to commemorate this special time in their lives, it was all such a beauty! They created an event that blended both their cultures and southern elegance.

One of our favorite details was their custom watercolored stationery by Yao Cheng Design! As Hindu wedding ceremonies tend to be lengthy (over an hour), Yao designed a beautiful program that explained every aspect and tradition with corresponding painted illustrations.

This Mountaintop Wedding is the Definition of Rustic Romance

Here’s the thing about Michaela and Dave – they’re awesome. This is a duo that loves to ski and travel and when it came time to choose a wedding destination, they decided on one of their fave ski resorts, Kirkwood. A little bit laid-back, a little bit rustic and all sorts of gorgeous, it was the perfect, secluded venue for their stunning celebration that included some DIY details, a taco bar and an epic after party. So beautiful… and fun.

Kirkwood is Michaela and Dave’s favorite mountain to ski. They love the laid-back vibe, the awesome terrain and the seclusion from the rest of Tahoe. They kicked the wedding off with a rehearsal dinner and welcome party for all guests at Red Cliffs Lodge, complete with a full taco bar and games. In the morning, they prepared for the day in one of the many condos available to rent at the base of Kirkwood, then Michaela and David (along with their photographer) rode the lift up to the lower corral for First Look photos below the Cirque in the wildflowers and on the mountain trails.

The Ceremony took place in the Meadow at Kirkwood, followed by a reception in the Village Plaza and Wall Bar. Michaela’s cousins made the signs, cake and cake topper. They had their first dance to Adam Sandler’s “I Want to Grow Old With You” from The Wedding Singer. The guests kept warm by the fire with blankets provided by the bride and groom and they danced under the stars.

The after party was a hit at the Cornice Bar & Grill, followed by bagels and coffee the morning after. One of their favorite parts of the weekend was having the whole resort all to themselves and their guests. Walking around the village seeing all of the people they love was so much fun. Guests enjoyed hiking, mountain biking and swimming throughout the weekend, and many reported back that it was the best wedding they had been to!

Saying “I do” against a High Sierra backdrop is never a bad idea and Kirkwood makes it so, so easy with two gorgeous venue options and packages that are perfect for everything from those smaller affairs to those those larger celebrations – they can even accommodate up to 200 guests! We love the idea of tying the knot in their beautiful meadow or village, then dancing under the stars like Michaela and Dave at The Wall Bar & Grill… OR taking advantage of the panoramic views and fireplace at the Red Cliffs Lodge. Either way, you AND your guests will definitely enjoy the breathtaking scenery and cozy accommodations.

From your welcome dinner to your going away brunch, Kirkwood has you totally covered with everything from an on-site venue coordinator to village games like giant chess and Jenga to indoor and outdoor cafe lights. Contact their amazing staff today to get planning and be sure to ask about special lodging discounts, because you and your friends are going to want to hang out awhile.

5 Things We Highly Recommend Practicing Before Your Big Day

With what feels like a million action items on your wedding planning to do list, it’s easy to see why the following items are often pushed to the wayside. But yet, they are some of the most important moments of your Big Day! From the first kiss to the first dance, here are five things you should give a test run before it’s showtime.

The Kiss

Which kiss? Well, you’re going to be throwing the x’s around a LOT on your wedding day, but most importantly—the ceremony kiss. A peck is too simple, tongue is just not OK with grandma… so go for that perfect in between. Practice makes perfect, but you probably don’t need a reminder to kiss your fiancé right now! Keep in mind that you’ll want your ‘first kiss’ to linger a bit so that your photog can capture the moment. 3 seconds should do it.

Getting Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Your photographer should be able to give you some great tips for posing—or for looking natural for those candid shots (harder said than done!). But it’s always a good idea to practice in front of a mirror, too. Try these tips if you’re feeling awkward about your every move being captured. Also, doing an engagement session with your photog is a great test run.

Vows

Whether you’re reciting scripted vows or going with completely personalized vows, it’s always a good idea to practice them beforehand. And, remember to speak up! I don’t think I’ve ever been to a wedding where the Bride or Groom are too loud when saying their vows. Most times, it’s tough to hear them, especially for an outdoor ceremony.

First Dance

You don’t have to go as far as to take dancing lessons—although they would be fun! But let’s face it, cramming in one more thing during the wedding planning process might send you over the edge. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t practice your dancing skills anyway. Grab your sweetie, turn on some tunes and get boogie-ing in the kitchen. Consider that your dress may get in the way—so have a plan of action for bustling, too.

Get to Know Your Dress

You’ll most likely be trying your dress on several times for alterations—but make sure to try it on at home and play around in it too. Get an idea for how it flows, how you’ll hold it with a bouquet or while holding your mister’s hand. These little things will help to prep for your Big Day and avoid any unexpected surprises!

From the bride… Quite soon after Andrew proposed, we decided to get married in Italy. The warmth of the people and the sun, the food, the wine, and the lifestyle of Italy evoked in us a feeling of relaxed happiness, which we wanted to be the spirit of our wedding. We soon realized with the language barrier that we needed a wedding planner; that was one decision I didn’t once question. Planning was fun and allowed me to be creative, with Gillian doing all the hard work! We then flew over to meet her and see venues in Tuscany. It was such an exciting day, helped along with some of Tuscany’s finest wine, and before it ended, we’d booked our villa and castle!

We went home and began searching for photographers, which was incredibly important to us as it is quite literally how you remember the day. We paid a deposit for one photographer before we found Peter and Veronica and fell in love with their flawless fine art photography. Unfortunately we couldn’t get our deposit back, but switching photographers is the best decision we made. You have to take your time and feel comfortable with your decisions, or they’ll keep you awake at night – every night!

The villa we booked for all our guests blew us away with its breathtaking views of the Tuscan vineyards. It features typical Italian country style and is actually a working wine estate, which came in handy! Our family arrived first and helped us string fairy lights and blow up pizza inflatables, we went for a truffle-filled dinner, and it was the perfect beginning seeing everyone laughing together. Our friends arrived the next day, and we had prosecco by the pool followed by a pizza party under the stars until the early hours. The day before our wedding, we had separate stag and hen days, filled with sunbathing, wine tasting, sight seeing, and of course, plenty of al fresco dining. The day after our wedding, we had a BBQ complete with an old-fashioned gelato cart, a donkey decorated in flowers while carrying beers and her two-week-old baby skipping around the lawn! Every day was special and memorable in its own way, and it was incredible to be able to spend so much time with our family and friends.

We love the soft, warm, natural tones of Tuscany’s landscape in September, so for our attire we wanted something striking to cut through and contrast those hues. Andrew, being the stylish gent he is, chose the groomsmen’s classic midnight blue dinner suits, and I chose complementary bridesmaids’ dresses. We wanted to look timeless and sophisticated, but we wanted the vibe of the day to be laid back and fun. The band was perfect for this and played great Italian swing and jazz during the prosecco/aperol hour in the gardens of the castle. Castello di Oliveto was built in 1424, it has beautiful detailing and even a bedroom for the pope! We dined in the courtyard, and being surrounded by the ruining walls in candlelight was magical.

For the “wedding breakfast,” we actually called it a feast and wanted it to feel like a big, family-style dinner, and it didn’t disappoint! The natural wooden tables were arranged in a U shape to give a communal feeling to the dinner. Each featured a dark grey runner, tons of candles, an olive leaf and eucalyptus garland, and pots of herbs to really create that castle feast ambience. For place cards, I had everyone’s names painted on marble coasters, which doubled up as favors. The pasta and wine were plentiful, and instead of champagne toasts we asked for bottles of limencello to be plonked down in front of people, which our guests really enjoyed! We then had a traditional Italian wedding cake – mille foglie, which got a bit messy! After that we danced to a DJ and saxophonist before a sparkler send off.

Dress shopping for me was the least fun part of the planning. I had no idea what I wanted, so instead of dragging my friends around mindlessly, I decided to try on as many as possible by myself. I must have gone to 10-15 different shops, and on the last shop, I was thankfully with my chief bridesmaid when I found this dress by Martina Liana in Angelica Bridal. It really was just a feeling of “ahhh finally!” I loved the ridiculously long train with the detailed trim, the classic cut, the pretty straps, and the low yet modest back.

My advice to couples is this: Try to do everything in your power to enjoy the process. Make that your number one priority, because a wedding does just last one day, but the engagement and planning is many, many days that can all be incredible if you let them be. Don’t rush decisions! Once you’ve found something then wait as long as you can before putting money in it – I probably would have changed many things just a few weeks after paying for them. Plan a few little surprises for each other, too. Make them secret missions; when they come to fruition, it’s so much fun seeing your partner’s face.

Unabashed Love for The Lone Star State Brought Them Together

They may be New Yorkers now but this Bride and Groom are true Texans at heart. Great mexican food and an unbridled love for The Cowboys put them on the path to everlasting love and when it came time for wedding planning, the location was a no brainer. Held at The Contemporary Austin, this outdoor celebration designed by 36th Street Events and floraled by Sweetwater Stems, is a mix of easy breezy neutrals and a nod to Midsummer Night’s Dream. Pore through every last gorgeous image photographed by Brett Heidebrecht right here.

From theBride… Spencer and I are native Texans so it seemed only appropriate to get married back home. We’re both originally from Dallas and we also separately attended The University of Texas at Austin so, needless to say, both cities hold a special place in our hearts. Now, I suppose we are New Yorkers but having that instant connection, those down-home Texas roots, was really instrumental in getting to know each other. You can imagine how nice it was to be with someone who understood things like . . . Texas football, good Mexican food and Bluebell Ice Cream. Plus, we’re both Cowboys fans living in New York City, so that immediately shot-gunned us to the realms of everlasting love.

All that said, it was important to us that we get married where our families raised us – in The Lone Star State. The question became “where”? As any bride, I wanted our wedding to be beautiful and timeless, but we also wanted to make it convenient for our family and friends who would be traveling from all across the country. We chose Austin, which was always high on my list because of it’s laid back feel. The City also catered to the intimacy we were seeking. It didn’t take long for us to settle on Laguna Gloria, an outpost of The Contemporary Austin, just minutes from downtown and serenely situated on Lake Austin. After visiting the site, I knew immediately it was the perfect fit. I love old historical buildings and Spencer really wanted to be outdoors; so it’s lush sculpture gardens and winding secret pathways nestled along the lake made the perfect backdrop for our intimate affair. Choosing The Contemporary Austin Laguna Gloria made the rest of the planning process easy. Spencer and I just wanted an evening under the Texas stars, eating good food, drinking good drink and spending quality time family and friends. Of course, great music and a boppin’ dance floor was important, too!

I had the help of a superstar wedding coordinator, Ren Newey from 36th Street Events. I told her my vision which included words like “ethereal” and “whimsical” and “midsummer night’s dream” – and gave her a gentle color palette of whites and off-whites that would enhance and not compete with the venue’s natural setting and flora. We also chose to tip our hat to my Mexican heritage from my father’s side by serving family-style Mexican cuisine. Ren executed all of this to perfection. She worked with my budget (which I loosened in some areas and buttoned up in others) and helped me secure a fantastic caterer and team of wedding vendors.

On our wedding day, I woke up to torrential rain and whipping winds (every bride’s biggest fear, especially for an outdoor wedding). Yet somehow, I knew everything was going to okay. I was getting married! And I was surrounded by my closest friends and bridesmaids who were keeping me cool and making me laugh as we got ready for the big day. And sure enough, by late morning, the clouds parted, the sun was shining and we were off to the races. My bridesmaids wore various styles of blush/nude colored silk chiffon gowns and my flower girl, also my future step-daughter, wore a simple white play dress adorned with rosettes at the waist. The grooms all wore navy suits including Spencer’s best man, his eleven year-old son.

Spencer and I chose not to do a “first look” with photographs before the ceremony, so the first moment we saw each other was when I walked down the aisle making it all the more joyful. We were both completely filled with emotion. Our ceremony was held in the late afternoon and was presided over by a Presbyterian minister, who we chose not only because of his long-standing relationship with my grandparents, but because we trusted him to perform a beautiful interfaith marriage. He incorporated aspects of each of our faiths mixing in traditions from both Catholic and Jewish ceremonies. (I’m Catholic and Spencer is Jewish). This was not only important to us but it was important to both of our families. To end the ceremony and commence the celebration my siblings surprised us with a mariachi band, secretly replacing the originally planned string quartet. This brought the house down, putting huge smiles on our faces and everyone else’s around us. It also set the tone for a great evening, kicking off with a cocktail hour featuring tacos, a queso/guacamole bar and ice-cold margaritas, and followed by chili rellanos, spinach and mushroom enchiladas, chili rubbed beef tenderloin and plenty of traditional sides for dinner. After dinner, we cut the cake and danced for hours on end to Motown music from the Matchmaker Band. It was truly a night to remember.

Brett Heidebrecht did an incredible job photographing our wedding weekend – from the Friday night honkey tonk hoedown to our wedding night beneath the Texas sky. He perfectly captured the essence of those days, the emotions and the joy. We cannot thank him, Ren and the rest of the team enough for making it an extraordinary affair and we are so grateful for our loving family and friends who were there to be a part of it all.

5 Questions to Ask Venues During Your First Visit

Looking for venues is such an exciting moment in the wedding planning process. It’s the moment when you finally feel like a bride and when this whole wedding thing starts to become truly real. But choosing a venue is probably the most important decision you will make—It’s the backdrop of the entire day and will set the tone for everything else that follows. As you’re touring venues, be sure to keep a notebook on you to take notes, and always ask these five questions.

What is included in the price?
Some venues have an all-inclusive package that can include everything from the food to the photographer, while others offer these a-la-cart services or even none at all. Make sure you have a clear notion of exactly what is included in the price they give you. All venues are different, especially when it comes to their pricing, so something that seems to be in your budget could actually be way out of it. Price everything out before getting your heart set on one place!

What dates do you have available?
When my husband and I got married, we wanted to do it on our 10-year anniversary (which, lucky for us, happened to be on a weekend). Although we were looking at venues over a year in advance, there were some places that already had our date booked. For us, the date was the most important factor of the day, so we quickly let those go. If you feel the same, or even if you have a specific month in mind, be sure they have that timing available beforehand.

Are there minimum guest counts?
We often hear of places that have a maximum guest count, but did you know that many venues also have a minimum guest count? If you’re looking to have a small, intimate wedding, make sure that this isn’t the case for the venues you are touring. The same is true for those with a huge guest count—and take note: just because the venue says they can fit 300 people, doesn’t mean they can fit them comfortably. Take a good look at the space and make sure it’s actually big enough for everyone to dance, mingle, and enjoy themselves.

Is there a list of approved vendors?
Do you have your heart set on a florist you want to use? Make sure your venue allows them. A lot of venues have a list of vendors that you are allowed to work with, meaning you can’t pick any vendors not on that list. Always know what your options are for vendors outside of the event space before booking a venue.

Who will we be working with?
This one may be the most important question of all. The person who gives you a tour of the space isn’t always the person you will be working with throughout the wedding planning process. Your point of contact at your venue is someone you will be speaking with a lot. Not only that, but they will also be the one there on your big day making sure everything goes smoothly, so make sure you know who they are! If they aren’t giving you the tour, ask to set up a time to meet them in person—if you don’t like the wedding coordinator at the venue, you could be in for a rough ride!
