A Modern Take on the Backyard Wedding

Take everything you think about your typical backyard wedding and kindly toss it out the window. Because this backyard celebration at the couple’s own home features a fresh, modern approach by One Big Fish Events. We’re pulling out all the heart eye emojiis for the feather-infused floral design (a trend we predicted for 2016) and that Vera Wang gown? Don’t even get us started. Thanks to the incredible Lacie Hansen and IQ Videography for documenting this beauty of a day.

From One Big Fish EventsRobert and Adela got married in the backyard of their modern Atherton home in the height of the summer. They wanted a simple wedding with great food and live music, so with the help of Hugh Groman Catering and the earthly sounds of the band, Goodnight, Texas they were off to a great start. Guests were invited to gather for pre ceremony cocktails on their back patio. His and hers signature drinks were offered, while the groom mingled and the band serenaded.

Once everyone had a drink in hand, the band paused while their event planner, Sadie Waddington of One Big Fish Events invited guest to gather under the shade of two gorgeous redwood trees for Robert and Adela’s exchange of vows. Guests stood, creating an aisle for Adela to walk down while Goodnight, Texas played their processional. The ceremony was framed by the amazing floral work of Ivanka Matsuba of Studio Mondine, who created a beautiful textured structure to back the couple.

The happy couple danced back down the aisle as newlyweds, Adela wearing a custom designed wedding band and Robert with a place holder drawn on by the bride with a sharpie during their ceremony. He had committed to tattooing his wedding band as a symbol of their permanent love at a later date..

Guest enjoyed Hog Island Oysters and Champagne, while they gave the couple a few moments to themselves. Guests were entertained by Magnolia Photobooth and watched Adela and Robert enjoy their first dance as a married couple. Only a few of the bride’s closest family were able to make the celebration, however, a touch of home was sent through a video of congratulations from Adela’s family, a wonderful and emotional surprise for the bride.

Guest dined under a fabric canopy with soft lighting bouncing from chandeliers, designed by Five Star Productions. Adela’s new last name is Stone, so the intimate gathering of guests were invited to find their names which were hand written by the bride on granite stones at each place setting. Menu cards were laid out at each setting and abundant, lush floral arrangements lined the table.

A few toasts were made post dinner, then it was time for cake and a collection of amazing trifles for dessert, all provided by Hugh Groman Catering. DJ Von at Sutherland Entertainment, brought the guests to the dance floor before heat lamps were set up around a cluster of patio lounge furniture for guests to relax into the evening. Guest went home with a CD of the band’s music generously shared by Goodnight, Texas, and the couple where given an autographed LP of their work.

Adela looked stunning in a Vera Wang dress and Robert wore a sharp grey suite with his signature converse low tops. Lacie Hansen captured the details of the day beautifully and IQ Videography produced a lovely recap of their special day!

25 Floral Fashion Finds You Should Add to Your Spring Wardrobe

I’ve had a love affair with floral print since the 90’s. When my Mom used to make us bloom-patterned dresses and floral cutoff jeans to pair with our ruffled crop tops and heart-shaped sunglasses. We rocked it as minis, no doubt. And today? Floral style is taken to a whole new level that keeps me coming back for more, from suits like this to breezy maxis, every woman should rock at least one or two floral pretties this spring.

Miley Cyrus Brought This Couple Together—See Their Beautiful Big Day

Few people can say Miley Cyrus brought them together, but this beautiful Bride and Groom met on the set of Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana, and six years later, they began planning this gorgeous day. With a scrumptious cake from The Butter End Cakery, a stunning winery setting and nature-inspired details throughout, this wedding is the perfect start to their happily ever after. See it all from Andrew & Jade Photography and Serendipity Cinematography in The Vault!

From The Bride…Bobby and I met in 2008 on the set of Disney’s once popular show Hannah Montana. From the start we became almost instant best friends. Although at the time we were on different paths, I had just started my freshman year of college, and he had just moved to California to pursue an acting career, one thing we bonded over was our love and appreciation of nature. When almost 6 years later we got engaged, we knew we wanted our wedding to be outdoors. Nature holds a special place in our hearts, being outside makes us feel more connected to each other and our spirituality. We wanted this love of nature to be present in our wedding day, from our ceremony to décor. For our florals you will see a lot of greenery, with very minimal flowers or colors. We were so fortunate to be married at such a gorgeous venue that we did not want to overwhelm the already beautiful backdrop. Down the aisle and around the trunk of the oak tree we had sporadic bunches of lavender and fern along with lanterns. We wanted an organic feel to the ceremony site and wanted it to feel as if the lavender and fern had sprouted there on its’ own. We also used lanterns along with varying mercury glass and garland to adorn our guest tables; this created a romantic and intimate feel to our wedding.

Early on in the wedding process Bobby and I decided to come up with a logo that we could use throughout our wedding, but also something to use in the future as we formed our own family. With the help of our wonderful printer and friend David Schwarz, we created the tree logo that can be seen on all our paper goods from save the dates, to wedding invitations and throughout the décor. This logo not only represents the tree we were married under, but also our future family tree we will create. I absolutely love the details when it comes to weddings, so it was so fun adding in the little things like our beloved dog on our cake, surprising my groom with signs during the ceremony and our diy olive oil favors.

Family is an integral part of our lives and this can also be seen throughout the décor and day. A lot of the items on the coffee tables and throughout the farmhouse were items we borrowed from our families’ homes. We wanted the farmhouse to look and feel as though guests were walking into our home. We included vintage picture frames with photos of lost loved ones on the fireplace mantle and tables to honor those we loved who have now passed. Some of the pillows on the furniture were painted by my cousin with our tree logo and monogram, while others we found through Etsy.

The day of our wedding was the most amazing day. The bridesmaids and I were there early in the morning getting ready, and it was so special watching my wonderful team of vendors turn an already beautiful place into an absolute dream. Both Bobby and I felt so loved having all our closest friends and family there to support and celebrate our love for each other. Our officiant, my cousin, had worked so hard with us to help create a personalized ceremony, during which Bobby and I read letters to each other we had wrote prior to the ceremony. The whole day Bobby and I were on cloud 9 and could not be happier with how perfect the day was to us. As everyone had told me it would, our wedding day flew by and before we knew it we were on to our sparkler exit and off to our hotel. Treasure every moment of your wedding day, take it all in because it will go by in a blink of an eye. Our wedding would not have been as magical without the help from our amazing vendor team including: Callista & Co., Wisteria Lane Flowers, Andrew Jade Photography, Serendipity Cinematography, Seasons Catering, The Butter End Cakery, A Rental Connection, Archive Rentals, The Class, and Manhattan RePro. Thanks to all for truly making it the Best Day Ever!

From The Bride…Devin and I met on our first day of work in (very) snowy Boston. I had just moved to the East Coast from a small town in Michigan, and he was a lifelong East Coaster through and through. It took us months before we spent an afternoon together, but once we did – we were never apart again.

Our love story was not one of love-at-first-sight, but built on years of shared passions and experiences. Devin and I are partners in all of life’s big and little adventures – whether we’re traveling, relocating to another coast or discovering a shared love for a new author.

After two failed attempts at a proposal (rear-ended, bird stole our lunch) Devin popped the question while we were sitting in the warm sun watching sailboats skim across San Francisco Bay.

We didn’t have to look far for inspiration for our wedding. We decided early-on that each decision we made would be rooted in something meaningful, and the aesthetic would be natural and romantic. We wanted a day that was full of details specific to our relationship and a party that never felt too fussy. We chose Fall to avoid the rush of the Summer wedding season, and Arizona for its perpetual blue sky and proximity to my parents’ winter home.

We partnered with the incredibly talented Lucky & In Love to design our event, and the wonderful duo at Ace & Whim to capture every detail on film.

My bridal party was small with my sisters in shades of wine and my nieces in soft ballet pink. The groom chose a sapphire blue tuxedo which was a perfect complement to his baby blues. My shoes weren’t only chosen for comfort – my pink Ferragamo jellies were an homage to my favorite childhood shoes that were a gift from my dad.

Devin went traditional with his bridal gift, choosing a stunning David Yurman cuff with pearl caps. I chose a Shinola Detroit watch for Devin as a nod to my Michigan roots.

At our ceremony, a string quartet played modern songs that reminded us of our family and friends as they were greeted with a glass of champagne. We recited our vows under an arch hand-crafted by my father, and a decades-old rosary hung nearby in a tree blessing us with perfect weather. Devin’s wedding band was made from the white gold from his father’s original ring, and our unity candle was the same candle lit by my parents at their wedding in 1971.

My big brother and Devin’s godmother each performed a reading of their choosing. My brother was my very first best friend and happens to have Down Syndrome. He spent almost a year practicing his reading – I can’t begin to describe the swell of pride we felt when he recited his blessing. He did an incredible job and it was so special to us.

Our monogram and stationery were custom-creations of Devin’s talented brother, and the hexagonal accents come from Devin’s nickname for me – “Honeybee”. Each invite envelope had a deep red wax seal with the silhouette of a whippet as a nod to our dog, Pickles. Our incredible event planner Katherine Thornhill at Lucky & In Love created our reception backdrop with weathered pages from torn up novels. Lush florals in brass vessels from Sarah’s Garden, and tall, simple candlesticks were the perfect romantic complements to the Tuscan stone at Silverleaf Club. Handcrafted tea light holders made from fallen birch trees at the bride’s family home were ever-present throughout the reception.

We decided to forgo the traditional for table numbers, instead using the names and a quote from our favorite authors to accompany each place card strung across a chalkboard wall hand-crafted by my father. Each place setting was wrapped in an oxblood velvet ribbon with a sprig of fragrant rosemary. Guests were gifted the Adventure Log from Word. Notebooks as a nod to our passion for travel, and the start of our biggest adventure yet.

At the end of the night, we were overwhelmed by the feeling that no matter how far life had taken us, our family and friends are our home. We had a day surrounded by the people we love most and will forever be grateful to those who attended and to each and every person who helped us make our dreams a reality.

Dreaming of a Fairytale Wedding in the Redwoods? Look No Further!

This is one of those soirees where the breeze hits just right, the sun peeks through the trees in the perfect kind of way and the smiles are aplenty. A day that deserved a top-notch photographer like Coco Tran to capture it all, and that she surely did. Nestldown provided a fairytale backdrop as usual (those Redwoods!) and with Going Lovely coordinating each moment the day went off without a hitch. See even more in The Vault!

From Going LovelyWhen Michelle & Rich first reached out and filled me in on their wedding vision and A-team of vendors they had lined up, I knew their wedding was going to be stunning! They had already booked Nestldown , a beautiful and fairytale-like venue tucked away in the Santa Cruz Mountains and wanted my help executing their vision.

Coco Tran was there to capture the big day and all the beautiful details! The theme was romantic and ethereal with bohemian accents, and Park Floral Design’s lush, organic arrangements helped carry that theme throughout the decor.

Dinner took place in the venue’s garden surrounded by a pond and redwood trees. To keep with the romantic and ethereal theme, eucalyptus garlands with loose flowers ran down the long farm tables and were styled with a mix of glass and brass candle holders. Hand painted river rocks served as table numbers and the place settings featured vintage china, glassware, and flatware from Frances Lane.

The fun continued throughout the night in the venue’s charming barn with a delicious dessert bar and a surprise performance by a Michael Jackson impersonator! It was an amazing evening filled with lots of love and laughter. Congrats Michelle & Rich on your beautiful wedding!

Insider Secrets to Easy Faux Lashes

Whether you’re prepping for the bridal shower, engagement shoot or the big day, sometimes you want to bump up the glam. That’s where faux lashes come in. They’re the perfect addition to take your look to the next level, and the pros at Face Time Beauty are sharing their insider tips. More of a visual learner? We’ve got you covered with beautiful step-by-step photos from the lens of You Look Lovely.

BUY YOUR LASHES: Opt for drug store lashes vs. the expensive department store kind. They are more malleable so you can easily bend them to fit your own lash line and they have a thinner band for a more natural look. For glue, I love Duo Eyelash Glue in black which can also be purchased at your local drug store.

PREP + APPLY: When applying glue to the faux lashes, make sure you let the glue get tacky and wait a second before you apply them to your lash line. This helps the lashes lock and ensure that they don’t slide at out of place.

SECURE: Remember to pay extra attention to the inner and outer corners and hold those two spots on the natural lash line as long as needed to stick and secure. Without applying an excess amount of glue, you want to do all you can to mitigate the risk of the lashes separating from your lash line.

FINISH THE LOOK: Remember, faux lashes can and will feel heavy on your natural lash set and although this feeling will disappear after a few minutes, a great way to make them look and feel more natural is to integrate the faux lashes with the real lashes using a mascara wand. This is an important step that shouldn’t be skipped!

Classic + Elegant Maryland Horse Farm Wedding

I am truly, madly, deeply in love with this wedding. With the help of Stephanie Bradshaw, the Bride’s vision for a wedding with “a touch of equestrian and all-white” came together in the most stunning way. The private estate, a horse racing farm nestled in the hills of Baltimore County, was transformed into an all white, tented, black-tie affair that is take-your-breath-away beautiful. Fall in love thanks to gorgeous images from Shannon Michele Photography in The Vault!

From Stephanie Bradshaw“A touch of equestrian and all white,” were the words our bride, Molly, used to first describe her vision when planning for her big day. The venue, a horseracing farm nestled in the hills of northern Baltimore County. It was the perfect setting for Molly and William’s wedding. Our team transformed the private estate into an all white, tented, black-tie affair that truly was a magical experience for not only the bride and groom, but for their family and friends alike.

Molly did all of the calligraphy for the seating cards, bouquet tags and invitations herself. She has since opened her own business called Lovely Ink Calligraphy. Molly’s father passed away a few years ago, but his presence was still acknowledged through out the day, as he had wanted to give Molly the most beautiful wedding. Molly and William were also married at Tagart Chapel, on the McDonogh campus, where Molly went to school. Molly’s brother created the amazing monogrammed wood stack entrance way!

From The Bride…My sister-in-law used to say “There is a very nice boy whose family lives down the street- you two should meet!” We did indeed end of meeting up one day for a casual cocktail but timing wasn’t exactly right. Flash forward almost 2 years, we randomly bumped into each other at the super market & timing was perfect. William was (and still is!) quick to point out that I “ditched” him for those 2 years- to this day he does not let me forget it.

We were engaged in July of 2014 in Kiawah, South Carolina at The Sanctuary. He somehow pulled off a surprise- I knew it was coming up but had no idea it was going to happen during our getaway to Charleston/Kiawah.

I am very thankful to my family, his family, my wedding planning team & the wonderful vendors who helped make my day absolutely magical.

Romantic German Countryside Wedding

I’ve seen a lot of gorgeous gowns in my day, but this Elie Saab masterpiece?  It’s breathtaking.  Think romantic lace sleeves, intricate floral details and a full flowing skirt perfectly complementing one seriously stunning bride and her beautiful wedding.  It’s romance times about a thousand all captured in ah-mazing images by Ashley Ludaescher Photography.  See it all in THE VAULT right this way.

From Ashley Ludaescher Photography… After more than decade together, Lillith and Elia tied the knot surrounded by their loved ones during a fabulous three-day weekend wedding celebration at a beautiful estate in the German countryside. Landgut Stober was a stunning venue for the wedding, located an hour outside of Berlin. It was the perfect weekend getaway for their guests who traveled from around Europe to celebrate their commitment.

Mary Lennox created the most beautiful garden-like atmosphere inside the reception space, wrapping each of the steel beams with orchids, roses and lush greenery and stunning spring garden arrangements on each of the tables. The decor was a surprise for the sweet couple and they, along with their guests, were totally blown away when they walked in the door for dinner. Two giant floral peacocks greeted guests at the lakeside ceremony, perched at either side of the aisle. This was not only a stunning celebration, but one filled with love for the young couple, who had known one another since they were babies, and was truly an honor for us to photograph.

Romantic + Fashionable Thailand Wedding Inspiration

Rainbows and sunshine aren’t guaranteed every day and that even includes your wedding day. So when drops began to fall during this shoot at Sandra Åberg’s  “A Touch of Fashion” photography workshop, well, they went with it. And the results? Gorgeous as ever. With The Wedding Bliss Thailand leading all planning and design and I Am Flower decking out the venue with beautiful blooms, these pics before us are stunning, chic and have us dreaming of romantic destinations; more in our Vault here!

From Sandra Åberg PhotographyThis is a styled shoot that came out of my “A Touch of Fashion Workshop” in Phuket, Thailand with the incredible wedding planners The Wedding Bliss Thailand. The ceremony at the pool was nothing short of incredible – in the middle of the ceremony a storm started – but the bride and groom were both already soaked and I honestly wished right then and there that this was a real wedding – to embrace the moments like this good or bad and make the absolute most of it is what marriage is all about. Nature can never be controlled, but as luck would have it after the storm the sky opened up and the most incredible light flooded the scene making for some beautiful images.

From The Wedding Bliss ThailandCreating a dream wedding was a lot of fun to work on! As we’re based on Phuket we always get inspired by its breathtaking views of the infinite sea. There’s always a special joy in being able to create dream weddings for our couples in such surroundings. But when it came to defining what the dream wedding is for us, we suddenly were unanimous in our vision, and decided to create a whimsical, yet classy ceremony in the incredible Ocean’s 11 private villa on Phuket’s east coast. Getting married in the infinity pool overlooking amazing Phang Nga Bay — sounds fascinating, right?

‘Endless Dream’ was the inspiration behind this shoot, and ironically, our gorgeous model happened to be named Dream! A gorgeous island girl meeting her Prince Charming from a far-away land and falls in love — almost a Pocahontas story, that was a part of our inspiration as well. The clean, almost minimalist style of the villa drew us in the direction of fresh, natural tones, so we chose white as a basis of the overall decoration. The choice of flowers was not left to a chance either — we decided to use all local flowers, to draw attention to Thailand culture and its authentic vibe.

Think You Can’t Make Your Own Spring Centerpiece? Think Again

Spring is all about blooms. From fashion to tabletop, flowers are a must and with Steve Moore of Sinclair And Moore Events’ help, we’re making sure that your Springtime centerpiece game is strong. Like floral freaking masterpiece strong. Get the dish on secrets to the perfect centerpiece from their Spring Workshop photographed by Matthew Land Studios and prepare to whip up some magic.

From Steve Moore… We held our second workshop in May, and we had 17 amazing women join us as we taught the art of event design and floral composition. The workshop was once again filled with women from all kinds of backgrounds, stories and experiences with the common love of flowers and event design.

I was so humbled by how far everyone came to learn from us. We had people from all over the country, and even someone that flew over from Germany. Some had worked with flowers before, and others were experiencing floral design for the first time. Everyone left with new knowledge and techniques and a greater confidence.

I didn’t know how much I would love teaching workshops, and sharing my knowledge and passion with people. In addition to teaching, I have also had the opportunity to encourage people’s dreams and help point them in the right direction. That has been the most rewarding part of all of this.

I love seeing people leave our workshops and go home and quit their full times jobs to pursue their passions. I love seeing people source flowers from their local markets and continue to practice the techniques they learned in our studio. I love seeing people come alive, and start believing in themselves and their dreams.

Psst… interested in getting your floral on? There are still spots available for Sinclair & Moore’s Spring workshops. They’re perfect for even the total beginner. Plus, donuts! They serve donuts and teach you how to make pretty flower masterpieces. That sounds like our idea of a really good time. And be sure to stop by their instagram because they just might be giving away a scholarship to one lucky attendee!

Supplies

compote/ bowl to hold the flowers
pin floral frog, or soaked floral foam foam
floral putty, water proof floral tape

Flowers

3 tree peony stems
3-5 garden rose stems
5 spray rose stems
9 ranunculus stems
5 kumquat branches
mixture of green foliages and vines

Directions

Secure the pin frog at the bottom of your compote bowl using floral putty and then fill the bowl with water. If you are using floral foam, secure your soaked floral foam in the compote bowl with floral tape.

Start designing your arrangement using the different kinds of foliage you gathered. The foliage will be your foundation for your entire arrangement so focus on creating the oversell shape you desire your arrangement to be. Use arching branches and leafy vines to add length and height to the arrangements.

Before adding any flowers, poke the fruited branches in the bottom of your arrangement so that the fruit hangs over the side of the compote bowl.

Carefully place the tree peonies (or a large impressive flower of choice) where you want the focal points to be. The flower should be tucked into the green foliage so it looks like it is growing out of the compote.

Add the gardens roses around the focal flowers, being careful not to place any of the flowers directly side by side or at the same depth as the focal flower. It is important to play with levels of depth so the flowers have dimension.

Continue to fill in your centerpiece with spray roses and ranunculus. I like to have some of these flowers extend beyond the focal flowers and some tucked deep into the compote.

It takes a lot of restraint to know when to stop adding flowers. Take a step back and look at your arrangement to see if all of the different types of foliages and flowers are visible. Tweak height and position of flowers as necessary.

Keep watering your arrangement. The flowers will drink a lot of water, and so you will need to refill the water level throughout the life of your centerpiece.

Remember to have fun and let yourself be free to explore and experiment with flower placement! Don’t be limited by rules! What you create should be an extension of your personal style!

From Katy Roberts of VOWSThe Altig family (groom’s family) are well known in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland; they are a big and active family, devout Catholics, kind and generous…they also have a farm in the middle of the city! Parents Rick & Lisa bought the large property in the Kirkland Highlands in the 80s then raised their family of 4 there. It was the dream of first daughter, Natalie, to get married in this special place so we did that on the pool deck in 2010. The tradition continued with Richie Altig (eldest son) wanting to do the same. His love of the animals took us down to the farm property.

Among the boisterous turkeys, lamas, goats, a mini horse (who loved to eat flowers, we later learned!), and a donkey named Burrito is a heavily slanted orchard which was determined large enough for a tent to fit 275 guests – perfect! We brought in the experts and the vision became reality. It took 5 days and 10 men to build the staging, install the hardwood-like flooring, grand staircase, railings, catering ramp, and to erect the gorgeous Tidewater Tent on the Altig Family Farm.

Words beautiful bride Brita described as her vision were: romantic, timeless, chic. Our palette was the softest of blush, greens, ivory, and taupe. We used a variety of table shapes and sizes to fill the grand white tent: farm tables, large, medium and small rounds with different textured linens to bring interest. Each place setting was adorned with vintage flatware, layered chargers of gold rimmed glass and floral print vintage china, gorgeous menus describing the lucky guests’ 6 course, Italian-inspired meal (Mom’s side is Italian).

The groom and groomsmen got ready in the 100-year-old cabin at the base of the property that had been moved by the family from Kirkland’s waterfront before it was demolished. The Altigs refurbished it staying as true to the time it was built as possible. The girls got ready in an extension of the main house in a well-appointed guest apartment next to a private dance studio where Brita and her girls spent a lot of time practicing (Brita is a Sea Gal for the Seattle Seahawks).

The day was a dream though rain did flirt with us (it is Seattle after all). Traditional Catholic ceremony with mass, then a send-off in Grandpa’s Vintage Model A. A sea of greens and romantic flowers awaited them at the reception including a stunning, one of a kind, floral backdrop behind their head table. The night was full of great food, entertaining toasts, and roaming animals per the family’s request. The mini horse spent hours looking at his reflection in our porta potty waiting area’s vintage vanity. He was the hit of the night!

Elegant Prospect Park Boathouse Wedding with a Sweet Tribute

My favorite part of this Brooklyn wedding isn’t the Groom’s kilt, the Bride’s gorgeous spring bouquet, the great music from Colin Watson  or even the stationery designed by the couple. Don’t get me wrong, I love all those details, but the sweet duo’s tribute to their families and ancestors—complete with a gallery wall of old family photos—definitely takes the proverbial (wedding) cake. See all the special moments from Levi Stolove Photography in The Vault!

From Levi Stolove PhotographyThey met long ago at a beer garden on The High-Line. When they thought of their wedding, they wanted a relaxed, fun, cozy party. The Prospect Park Boathouse is a perfect fit for them. It is a beautiful space along a the lake and still close to home. They are both creatives, Jamie by avocation-and by day she is a lawyer and Chris is an architect. They designed their own invitation, save the date and table name cards. They named each table after a family ancestor and included the history of that family member with an old photo. In this way they could bring all their family together, even the long ago ancestors. Chris being Scottish decided to wear a kilt and Jamie’s father wanting to embrace Chris’s background hired a bag pipe player that surprised the couple during the father of the bride speech.

Colorful Destination Wedding at Secrets Silversands, Riviera Cancun

This is a duo that knows how to have a good time.  A jet off to paradise with your nearest and dearest and celebrate seaside good time.  Think a breathtaking ceremony over the ocean (literally) meets vibrant teal hues meets an ah-mazing vacation at Secrets Silversands, Riviera Cancun.  Fall in love with every stunning moment captured by Jonathan Cossu in THE VAULT right here.

From the Bride… We met in the spring of 2006. I was in my junior year and studying for the medical school entrance exam. I enrolled in a prep course and Eddie was my teacher.  I immediately thought he was cute and wanted to get to know him more.  It wasn’t until after the class ended that I made my move. We met up at a coffee house in Chicago and immediately hit it off. Shortly after we started dating, Eddie moved down to Florida for Med School and I finished my undergrad degree in Illinois.
Eddie is funny, kind, ridiculously smart, and oh-so-handsome. He’s the kind of guy you don’t give up because there’s 1,300 miles between you. We were long distance for the first two years of our relationship.  Those two years were amazing, but they weren’t always easy.  The glue that held us together through the difficult times was our dog, Mac.  We adopted him shortly after Eddie moved to Florida which was the best decision we ever made. Mac helped us become a family and thanks to him, nine years later, we tied the knot with our closest friends and family by our side.

Our wedding day was filled with love, happiness, lots of dancing, and a donkey named Pancho Tequila. Eddie had only two requests for the wedding.  It must have a taco bar and a there must be a donkey.  I wanted our wedding to be fun, lighthearted and something that our guests would remember from start to finish.

I had a very clear vision for the wedding, which was brought to life by my awesome wedding coordinator at the hotel.  I was able source amazing handmade pieces on Etsy.  Thanks to the help of friends and family, I coordinated transporting 10 suitcases filled with decorations, favors, and welcome bags down to Mexico.

As a token of our gratitude, we put together welcome bags for each guest.  I found the cutest muslin bags on Etsy with “Hola” stamped on them. I filled them with a welcome note, itinerary, deck of playing cards, koozie, bottle opener, and a mini first aid kit filled with hangover relievers and sun essentials. My favorite part of the welcome bag was Mac’s “gift”. I got the idea from Minted’s blog, Julep. I printed his picture with a message on business cards and attached them to bags of mini tennis gumballs.  Mac’s favorite toy was his tennis ball so it was the perfect way to include him in our special day.

I had decided on my dress well before he even popped the question.  It had to be Monique Lhuillier’s Scarlet.  I fell in love with the delicate Alencon Lace and the open back was perfect in the warm weather. I wanted my bridesmaids to look beautiful and feel comfortable.  Their dresses were purchased during a rent the runway clearance sale for a fraction of the price.  This was especially nice given the high cost of travel.  As part of their gift, I included their necklaces and robes, which they still use today.  The groomsmen’s suits were purchased online for under 150 dollars and we bought their accessories as part of their gift.

For the flowers, I wanted something bright that included succulents.  I loved the orange and the pink together, which popped next to my ivory gown.  Since the bridesmaids were already in a bright teal, I bought simple high quality faux white calla lilies on Etsy.  This kept us under budget and no one noticed they weren’t the real deal.

For our ceremony, we chose a private pier overlooking the ocean.  We said our vows with the waves crashing in the background, which is something we will never forget.  It was followed by cocktail hour where our guests were serenaded by a Mexican Trio.  Pancho Tequila, the donkey, made his appearance and our guests had fun taking selfies with him.

For the reception, I got my inspiration for the centerpieces from my love of vintage milk glass. I found the most gorgeous gold dipped milk glass vases on Etsy, in which I put a simple pink dahlia. I paired that with a floating candle and a large succulent.  Since we only had three tables, I wanted something more creative than table numbers. I used different color dia de los muertos skulls to differentiate each table and stamped the escort cards with the corresponding skull color. I wanted something fun to give as a favor and the mini pinatas from Lulaflora were absolutely perfect.  I filled them with our favorite candy so everyone had a sweet treat to savor at the end of the reception.

Our Photographer, Jonathan Cossu, was the best money we spent. He was fun to work with and caught the most amazing candid moments.  Having my mother at my wedding was especially important to me as she was diagnosed with breast cancer the year before. We almost cancelled the wedding due to the uncertain nature of her health, but her doctors were hopeful she would be able to attend. Thankfully, she was able to travel to Mexico to be with us on our special day. Jonathan captured many beautiful moments between me and my mom that I will be able to cherish forever.  Jonathan did a great job capturing all the happiness and love we felt that day. We can’t help but smile when we look back at our photos.

My final word of advice to brides considering a destination wedding. Make sure you work with a good travel agent! The last thing you want to worry about is coordinating flights and hotels. We worked with Nanda van Zwam from Beach Bum Vacations.  She provided my guests with a packet that included hotel information, room descriptions, and prices. She coordinated everything via email and phone and booked every flight, hotel room, and airport transfer for all of my guests.

Thank you for the opportunity to share our wedding with other brides. I had a blast planning it from start to finish and I hope it inspires other brides to have their own fun filled fiesta!

A beautiful outdoor setting, personal details to reflect their heritage, and (of course) just the right vendors to capture the memories. Enter KT Merry who captured it all in one perfect gallery. Along with Jonathan Clark who crafted the film below, she photographed a celebration that’s certain to put shades pink and purple on the wedding palette map.

From The Bride… Chris and I always tell people that we met in the dark. We both were doing our training at the same hospital in Chicago- me in plastic surgery and he in radiology. I walked into the dark room where radiologists do all their work, looking for help, and Chris was the first person to look up from the computer. Months later I was at a medical school reunion and mentioned to a former classmate who worked with Chris that I thought he was cute, and one of my friends who was with me at the reunion launched a major effort to find out who this guy was and cajoled me into going out on a near blind date with him several weeks later.

What an adventure it has been – after meeting in Chicago, one year later we moved to New York City for my fellowship training, and one year after that, we moved to San Francisco where I took my first job (finally after 11 years of post-college training!). In our final month in New York, Chris surprised me by proposing in our tiny studio. The proposal was a combination of both of our styles – I love grand romantic gestures and Chris prefers unique, intimate moments. He wrote me a long poem in a scrapbook I keep filled with momentos from our time together – Broadway ticket stubs, subway tokens from cities we have visited, restaurant menus. He secretly videotaped the entire proposal from a camera in our apartment capturing a private moment between the two of us, followed by a previously planned black-tie celebration at Cipriani’s for my fellowship graduation.

We never expected to end up in California, but as we started planning our wedding, we quickly decided on Napa as our destination. Chris is Canadian, and we have friends and family all over the country and world, and we were sure Napa would be the perfect place to celebrate with everyone. While it would be a destination wedding for most of our guests, it was only 90 minutes from us, allowing me to be involved in all aspects of the wedding planning. We spent months visiting or researching every venue in Napa Valley without finding anything that fit our vision for the wedding celebration. Then we visited Black Swan Lake Estate, and I remember we looked at each other during the visit, and we both knew that we had found the perfect place. It was January, and despite the lack of leaves on the trees or flowers in the garden, we could already imagine how beautiful it would look in September which is harvest season in Napa and when we wanted to have our wedding.

The venue was magical. Throughout the nine months we planned this wedding, every time we were on site for a visit, it became more and more beautiful. I have always wanted to have an outdoor wedding with the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception held completely outdoors under the stars. And the estate was large enough to give each part of the wedding a new and unique feel. The estate was so beautiful on its own, we didn’t feel like we needed that much to embellish it besides our wonderful friends and family.

Knowing we were getting married in the middle of harvest season, when there would be lots of natural greenery, I wanted to incorporate bright pops of color. I chose purple and fuchsia flowers and bridesmaid dresses because I have always loved these colors and knew they would look amazing amongst all the ripe leaves and vines. We were married down by the lake, under these beautiful weeping willows. For the bridal entrance, an antique Rolls Royce drove my father and me through the vineyard road down to the lake where Chris was waiting for me at the foot of the trees.

My younger brother was our officiant, and we wanted our ceremony to be interactive, so during the ceremony, our wedding rings which were tied to a small wreath, were passed among our guests so that everyone could touch our rings and bless the symbol of our marriage prior to Chris and I exchanging them. All of our guests then walked through the vineyards up to lawn for cocktail hours, and then moved on to the terrace where everyone sat at two long king’s table under an arbor of trees with glimmering crystal chandeliers suspended from the roof formed by the tree branches.

It was really important to us that the wedding reflect our different backgrounds – Chris’ Canadian roots and my Vietnamese heritage. We found an amazing stationery company in Baltimore that designed our wedding invitations and printed material. Our wedding invitation included a custom portrait of the two of us under the willow trees, with an early reveal of my wedding dress (for anyone who was paying attention), and the invitation also had a timeline of all of the cities we have lived in across the world, both before and after we met.

We also incorporated other Canadian and Vietnamese elements into the wedding- we had his and hers cocktails using Canadian whiskey and maple syrup and a Vietnamese lemonade with passionfruit. Our passed hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour included mini Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches and fresh spring rolls. I also changed into a traditional Vietnamese dress (ao dai) and hat for the cake cutting, though instead of wearing the traditional red ao dai, I had a purple ao dai made to match our wedding colors. Our guests liked my Vietnamese dress (and especially the gold hat) the most since most had never seen the traditional wedding outfit. Though I loved my white wedding dress, which my mother had picked out for me. It had a detachable tulle overskirt which I wore during the ceremony and most of the reception. But to surprise our wedding guests, we had our wedding instructor choreograph into our first dance an opening sequence in which Chris twirls me out of the overskirt to reveal the rest of my dress underneath.

We had such an amazing time and the despite small hiccups (right before the wedding, about 20 of our guests got on the wrong shuttle and ended up at the wrong wedding), the day was exactly how we imagined. Many of our guests commented on how special it was to meet all of our other guests – friends and family who represent all the different periods of our life from childhood to adulthood. With our wedding it was finally possible to gather all the people who have been such an important part of our past and present together in one place to celebrate the start of our new future together. We got to spend an entire weekend with friends and family who had come from both near and far- as far away as Singapore and Kenya to be with us. We are so glad to have the memories captured so beautifully by both our wedding photographer and videographer. Everyone would tell me before the wedding, “Enjoy every moment, because your wedding day is going to go by in the blink of an eye.” And it sometimes seems like life since the wedding has gone by in the blink of an eye, but it is truly wonderful to know that we get to spend the rest of our lives together making even better memories.
