California Wedding by Lisa Lefkowitz

Lisa Lefkowitz seems to reign Queen when it comes to drool inducing weddings. She either gets the BEST clients ever or she has a magical ability to photograph every wedding so that it is more than magazine worthy. I’m thinking that it’s probably a little of both. Well, this San Francisco beauty is no different. It’s tradition with a twist…a classic approach with contemporary styling. With a who’s who of Bay Area vendors including florals by Nancy Liu Chin and planning by Jubilee Lau Events. And did we mention that we’re loving every last bit of it? Helen + Hwa were married in a destination wedding (the couple lives in New York) at the glamorous San Francisco landmark, The Bently Reserve. Before the party got started we drove around the City on a cable car, and took some portraits at the beautiful Lyon Street stairs. This fabulous black-tie affair was created by Jubilee Lau Events, with floral and event design by Nancy Liu Chin. Soft pinks glowed against the marble of the Bently, in contrast to the elegant use of black & white.

Montana Wedding

If I could live forever inside of this next perfect wedding…I could die happy. The backdrop is of course insanely beautiful, but it’s the photographs that Mary Beth Tyson snapped, that have completely taken my breath away. Add to that a bride that could quite possibly be the most lovely bride I’ve ever seen, with her laid back completely effortless beauty, a handsome groom in a fedora, their three year old little piece of perfection and well, it’s pretty much a fairytale realized. Michael and Amy were married in their native state of Montana.  They planned their wedding in just under two months wanting to have a summer wedding but didn’t want to wait until the long winter was over.  It was important to them that the mountains were showcased so they chose Holland Lake Lodge which is nestled between the Mission Mountains and the Bob Marshall wilderness.

They were married with only the very closest family and friends in attendance and with Amy’s 3 year old son as the ring bearer.  Amy’s dress was handmade by her mother using 100 year old vintage lace that her mother was given when she was a little girl.  Michael’s suit was purchased at JCrew and bought to match the straw hat.

Brazilian Beach Wedding by Daniel Nobre

We are a Brazilian-American combination, and we live in Washington, DC. We met each other almost three years ago in DC, It was love at the first sight and since then we have been together. Last year we got engaged in Negril, Jamaica and one month later we had our civil wedding in Vermont, where Johannes grew up. It was so beautiful and sweet, with a few good friends and his family. We tried to keep it simple and the wedding was all DIY. I bought my dress (from the 30’s) at a vintage store and we had an adorable morning/afternoon with our loved ones. But we decided to have another, bigger wedding in Brazil on the beach near where I am from, so all of my family and friends could attend. We made the wedding invitations ourselves, and they featured one of Johannes’ woodcuts. Our second wedding was August 7th and it was a dream. We rented a beach house at Tabuba Beach, Ceará (Brazil) and the ceremony was on the beach around twilight. I was wearing a custom made dress by a Brazilian designer who is a friend of mine. Johannes brought a seersucker suit from the U.S and was wearing a pink tie that I gave him. For the entrance, we had an accordion-solo and everybody was very emotional. During the wedding we did the “sand ceremony” which is very common in Brazil. The bride and the groom mix colorful sand, representing the two lives that are being made one. After the ceremony we had a reception at the house with live music, DJs, a fruit cocktail bar and a lot of fun. We wanted the wedding to have a fun and festive vibe, nothing too formal. We also tried to keep the rustic atmosphere and have spontaneous pictures, and we passed out buttons with cute caricatures of the two of us.

Golden Chic Events ~ Milwaukee Wedding Story

When two cultures are blended in marriage, many traditions come into play. Today’s wedding, introduced earlier this morning from Sara Dahmen, principle wedding planner of Golden Chic Events encompassed a traditional, yet modern Hindu ceremony followed by a lovely luncheon and stunning evening reception. Now ~ it’s time to hear from Swathi, the beautiful bride!

After six years of dating and over seven and a half years of friendship, Adam and I were incredibly excited to finally get married. We wanted our wedding to truly represent us both as individuals and as a couple. We envisioned a romantic yet chic event that modernized our distinct backgrounds while maintaining their cultural integrity. We wanted our friends and family to not only feel as though they entered an exclusive event, but to also feel truly loved. We wanted to sincerely thank them each for their continued love, support and impact on our lives. We accomplished this by both paying homage to our heritage throughout the event and also making the guests a part of our love story. This vision is best encapsulated by our favors: handmade, monogrammed truffles custom created to represent us as individuals, by reflecting each of our cultural backgrounds. Although each truffle featured completely distinct flavors, they complemented each other perfectly, just like Adam and I. Similarly, every out of town guest received a gift bag full of monogrammed snacks and beverages that also featured a custom newspaper designed to be a window into our lives. While the newspaper contained essentials such as descriptions of all of our wedding events (spanning four very busy days), we also included trivia, photos and stories of our past, present and future together as a couple.

As an admittedly type A individual, I pulled Adam into my world and, together, we poured over every little detail of the event. We custom designed every single item used at our wedding and, as a result, our monogram was literally everywhere (numerous people actually told me that I should shift careers into marketing and graphic design!). What I remember most about the planning process, however, is actually how well Adam and I worked together to hand create many of the monogrammed details at our wedding, including custom water bottles, cocktail stirrers, candies, matchboxes, magnets, coloring books and, most significantly, hand embossed napkins. This took FOREVER. But, I will never forget how we set up an assembly line with my parents to emboss 1,200 napkins during the week before the wedding. I could barely breathe from ingesting an unhealthy amount of silver embossing powder. And my dad, who took the project very seriously, sported goggles and a face mask while aggressively using a heat gun to set our monogram into the napkins. This was pre-wedding, familial bonding at its finest.

Yet, while focusing on the event’s minutia, we never lost sight of the bigger picture – our guests had to have a blast at the wedding! To get them involved, we opted for grand entrances throughout the day that would evoke excitement and crowd involvement: Adam entered on a horse (which is atypical for South Indian weddings) and I entered on a doli carried by four men and circled the perimeter of the Pilot House. To add cultural authenticity, we brought in traditional Indian musicians from Canada. They added character and liveliness to the ceremony and temporarily transported guests to India for the day. At the reception, we used a combination of a harpist and a DJ to create an event that was both romantic and elegant, but also a killer party. The dance floor was crowded the entire evening and guests of all backgrounds were dancing to Hip Hop and Bhangra alike. It was truly wonderful to see all of our guests mesh together so well and alternate between shaking their booties on the dance floor, taking silly photos in the photo booth, jotting down the names of our favorite Chicago restaurants (used in lieu of table numbers) and gorging on the dessert buffet, the chocolate chip cannoli wedding cake and our signature champagne cocktails.

Still, after all the sketching and planning we had done prior to the big day, I will never forget how I felt walking into our ceremony, lunch and reception venues for the first time. All three venues felt completely modern and romantic, but each was distinct. The traditional Hindu ceremony was chic and ethereal. The post-ceremony lunch was contemporary and pure, with grand chandeliers and one of a kind, mum ball flower arrangements. And then, there was the reception. I almost fainted when I first walked in to the venue. It epitomized modern romance. Lush pale pink and champagne roses consumed the base of the tables, while the centerpieces completely stole the show. Manzanita and birch branches in silver vases overflowed with flowers. I thought I had never in my life seen anything so beautiful, but then I turned around and saw the sweetheart table. I almost had a heart attack; it was surely one of a kind – a huge, silver tree dripping with roses and crystals. Guests raved about our use of contemporary branches and trees throughout the event and many told us they had never seen anything like it.

Looking back on the event, I can honestly say that our wedding was the best day in both of our lives. Being surrounded by so many people we loved made all of the planning completely worth it. Yet, as the excitement from the day wears off and the memories begin to fade, there is one part of our wedding day that I will always remember. After the Hindu ceremony, Adam and I privately exchanged rings by Lake Michigan. I will never forget how I felt at that moment – overwhelmed with emotion and love. After I quickly placed Adam’s ring on his finger, Adam surprised me by pulling out a stack of papers on which he had written vows and began to articulate all of the reasons he loved me and was lucky to be my husband. I, of course, felt like a total idiot for not also preparing my own vows. But, I will never forget standing next to that lake, hearing Adam’s vows and knowing that nothing else mattered in the world. I had found the man I loved and I wanted to spend my entire life with. I was completely content.

After exchanging rings, Adam and I went back up to the pilot house. At this point, all of the guests had moved to the lakeside tent to eat their three course lunch. What remained in the venue was the ethereal mandap, the sun shining in and a private table set up for the two of us to dine together. I feel so blessed to have had time alone with my husband amidst an amazing, yet admittedly hectic and overwhelming day. This was by far the best hour of my life. ~Swathi

New York City Wedding with Total Style

I’m pretty sure this bride is my new best friend. She is so insanely chic, one look and I instantly feel a little frumpy. From her aaaah-dorable cocktail dress to her perfect birdcage veil and insane Jimmy Choos, every little bit of this bride is gorgeous. Plus, she managed to design and craft a New York City wedding without straining their wallet…a feat that is FAR from easy. So I love her that much more. The dreamy groom, the intimate details and the charming style doesn’t hurt either. Click here to see even more.

We were engaged in March 2010 and immediately decided to have a destination wedding in our favorite place, Bali. Unfortunately, we realized that many family and friends would not be able to make it. We decided to plan a small ceremony in New York (where we live).

We ended up having an amazing wedding with just a little over 60 family and friends at the Rooftop Garden of the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York. It was the complete opposite of our ‘island Bali’ wedding but amazingly special. Because we were not financially planning a second wedding we opted to just do (almost everything) ourselves and simplify with just a ceremony, cocktail hour (with a signature summer cocktail) and a luncheon.

Our family and friends participated — making the our wedding special and unique. My uncle Rev. Michael Livingston officiated and our parents gave a blessing. We “JUMPED THE BROOM” an African American and celtic tradition. It signifies ‘sweeping away of the old’ and starting a new life together as you jump. Everyone participated, saying 1, 2, 3! Instead of a traditional wedding party we had our 3 nieces and 1 nephew in the wedding. Gil being a 3rd grade teacher and our love for family and children truly felt special for us.

My wedding planner, friends and family were amazing in helping us DIY…My best friend made the programs, we had an arts and crafts party with the kids and they helped us do the seed favors. My wedding planner and I did all the flowers. I collected some vintage rhinestone brooches for the corsages for our Moms, Aunts and my bouquet. I also ordered most of the hand made details on etsy.com. This includes our cake topper, the beautiful black love birds, sugar anemone flowers, flower girl basket, ring bearer pillow and even the broom! I heart etsy.com! My husband made the wishing tree as well as the small vases…he is a ceramics sculptor. This was a HUGE it — as guests took home the bud vases as a very special memento from our wedding.

Last, but certainly not least — we were ecstatic to have our french bull dog, Zoe be a part of the wedding. She is such a big part of our family it would not have been the same without her. Seriously, how cute is she?

Thanks for allowing me to share our simple, urban, chic wedding. Proof that it IS possible to have an inexpensive wedding in New York…with a little extra work and a lot of love, anything is possible!

Multi-Cultural Milwaukee Wedding From Golden Chic Events

We are thrilled to have Sara Dahmen, principle wedding planner at Golden Chic Events, share all of the details of Swathi and Adam’s magnificent wedding celebration …

Opulence and tradition, details and modernity – the love story of Swathi and Adam culminated in one full and glorious day. The sky was blue, the wind crisp, and the weather tinged with fall. Walking into the ceremony room overlooking Lake Michigan, the morning eastern sun cast the crystals on the mandap in a thousand rainbows, and lit the white fabrics with a glow that was truly ethereal.

We chose to decorate completely different from most Indian ceremonies – white replaced red, silver overtook gold. The girls were to be dressed in many shades of blue and turquoise, while the men wore embroidered white and creams. All the flowers were in white, and a customized aisle runner was rolled out, showing the couple’s monogram for the first time that day.

The groom arrived in full Indian garb, ready for his upanayanam, and he and his parents went through the time honored ritual with the guidance of the bride’s father and the priest. Guests began to arrive and mingled over coffee and croissants while the priest cantored and the musicians played their drums and horns.

During the festivities, the bride arrived with henna on her hands and bejeweled on every arm and finger. We quickly ushered her to be dressed in the ceremonial sari while the groom was brought out to ride in on a sequined horse, in the traditions of old. {We were just happy to have a horse at this point. Eight days before the wedding, our beautiful, white Maharaja horse died! It was a bit of a scramble. Where to find a horse who was comfortable completely covered in Indian blankets and feathers and being surrounded by people and lead by musicians playing unique instruments? In the end, we found a horse – but talk about a last minute emergency!}

As Swathi’s family greeted Adam and he dismounted, Swathi was spirited up to the ceremony site and hidden away until the groom could be reseated under the mandap, his vision hidden by a decorated cloth, so he could not see his bride quite yet.

With four strapping young men, we piled Swathi in all her beautiful splendor on a white doli, which was carried outside in a circle, with the perfectly blue lake as the backdrop, before coming in and being set down in front of the mandap.

From there, the ceremony continued for another nearly two hours – lots of fruits and rice and fire and confetti were tossed while continual blessings were chanted in Sanskrit. In the meantime, we were setting up the luncheon tent to be a reflection of the ceremony – a lot of ethereal white under a big white tent near the Lake, with bits of blue popping in with gossamer chair ties. Orchids and mum balls were piled in the centerpieces on on cocktail tables, which were later re-used at the reception.

Once Swathi and Adam were married, guests moved down to eat lunch, and the entire Golden Chic staff headed out to finish up the reception location design. This is where everything came together – the customized monogram was on every little thing, from the chocolate favors to the candies at cocktails and everything in between. Silver and pale pink were the main colors, with bits of black thrown in as a surprise.

Three different types of centerpieces were displayed on silver pintuck linens, offset by white china with silver rims and pink napkins. The lower centerpieces were huge luscious chunks of pale pink roses and orchids of multiple shades, while the medium height pieces were dark manzanita branches, decked out with orchids and surrounded by three smaller pieces of pave pink roses. Six foot tall centerpieces were the grandest – wrapped in custom silver cocoons, and hung with orchids, they were stunning and brought height into a room dwarfed by a huge ceiling. The sweetheart table was completely filled with a tall silver tree, hung with roses and crystals, while loads of candles surrounded them. Behind the table, the aisle runner was re-purposed as a banner, once again bearing the monogram of the day.

The elaborate dinner was discussed on each menu card, and loads of candles created a romantic glow. We placed pale pink lighting along the walls, highlighting the old architecture of the church-turned-reception venue. On the dance floor, the custom decal was hidden by a gigantic pink cake. Next to it, the groom’s cake boasted the old-school NU logo and was completely vegan – not an easy feat for any baker!

Guests arrived to the sound of a hand-played harpist for cocktails, where a signature cocktail called “The Griffin” was passed – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions – and guests came up to the escort tree. The tree was hung with escort cards on pink satin ribbons, and guests cut their names down to find their tables later. Each table was named after a restaurant in Chicago the couple enjoyed, and a photograph of the restaurant was at each table to help guide them to their seats.

Swathi and Adam arrived at their reception completely changed. The men now wore Western tuxes, while the women had changed into soft silver grey dresses. Swathi, however, was still completely covered in jewels in her custom designed hot pink lengha and accompanying pieces. No white dress for this bride!

Usually, Indian weddings are served by a caterer who does a buffet style dinner, but this time we served family style, which was completely unexpected and surprising for many of the guests. Later, a huge dessert buffet was brought out, completely with a chocolate fountain, mini cheesecakes, chocolate covered strawberries and fruits. Indian tea was served with strong coffee at the same time cake was offered to guests as well.

What was perhaps the most amazing was how immediately the dance floor filled up, and how constantly it stayed full. The guests were there to have a good time! If they weren’t dancing, they were in line for the photo booth, where loads of hilarious photographs were taken all night long. There were a lot of memories in that scrapbook by the end of the night.

Once the dancing ended and the house lights were up, the wedding party moved to Aloft hotel. It was definitely a wedding worth rehashing!  — Sara Dahmen, Golden Chic Events

And believe it or not … we have lots more to come in just a bit! The beautiful bride, Swathi has HER story to tell!

From Jocelyn Mathewes…

Iain and Natalia were the surprise clients of my life. Booking from across the Atlantic ocean far, far in advance without even seeing me in person, they put their faith in me for what turned into a most exquisite event. I have to say that I’ve been impressed with all of my brides’ unique tastes, flair for details, and the like, but Natalia–a fashion designer and seamstress–really dove in head first, and created nearly all the details herself. But down to the story. Mindy, my assistant for the day, started with Iain, as he donned his traditional Scottish attire. Check out that belt buckle–fashioned with the couples’ initials! Oh, and Natalia made him a fabric boutonniere to match her bouquet. Natalia made her dress from the curtains of her bachelorette apartment, with accents of antique French lace–they don’t make it anymore!!!

One of the things that made Natalia and Iain’s day very unique was that they planned a block of three hours to drive around Hagerstown and take portraits in locations they found beautiful and meaningful. It made for quite a hilarious and lovely time; the weather was perfect (if a bit windy), and Mindy and I managed to catch some fabulous moments. The rings were passed around to guests for warming, and the priest–Natalia’s godfather–wrapped their hands with his stole to bless the exchange of rings. After a joyous kiss, they planted a sapling in the garden to symbolize their unity, and then greeted all the happy guests with a wonderful, beautiful party. As the toasts and speech punctuated the dinner, the party became even more lively, and everyone celebrated with the sweet taste of cake and dancing.

From Ashley Garmon…

Cyndi and Trae are the quintessential Austin couple. They embody everything about Austin – from football to food. Their friends were expecting great things from their wedding…and I am thrilled to say they were not disappointed! The couple wanted a vintage and whimsical feel to their fete so they chose Vista West Ranch for its charm . . . not to mention its fabulous beer garten! A color palette of blush, magenta, ivory, bronze jade and espresso was chosen, and it was ideal for the setting.A color palette of blush, magenta, ivory, bronze jade and espresso was chosen, and it was ideal for the setting. Cyndi was simply stunning in her wedding garb. A true vision from her head to her toes (seriously – the most fabulous wedding shoes ever). This girl has STYLE, and so does her man! Trae looked dashing in his suit. The tie he chose was perfect for the wedding. They looked like the couple that comes in your picture frames!

Cyndi and Trae wed outside, in front of the wooded arbor that was enhanced with colorful floral. An acoustic guitarist played contemporary pieces, including Cyndi’s bridal processional, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”. The chairs were adorned with vintage lace chair ties to add a special detail. Cyndi was all about the details! The couple’s pup – Colbie – was my favorite detail – what a sweet girl. She did great for all her photos and was a true champ. Guests then headed to the beer garten where they dined on Tex-Mex fare and drank raspberry-flavored mojitos with fanciful straws, as well as sweet tea and vodka with monogrammed stirrers. A cigar roller was brought in as Cyndi’s surprise gift to Trae and he LOVED it. Espresso floral linens complemented the barn in the backdrop. The guitarist continued to play and it was the perfect Austin atmosphere. Time for dinner, but not before they picked up their seating assignment – which was on a pinwheel!!! Cyndi LOVED her DIY projects, and this was one of my favorites. The pinwheels were in different papers that matched the look of the wedding so it created an eclectic, one-of-a-kind display. Guests then entered the barn to find their seats and were wowed with so many unique touches. All tables were named after different Austin locales that meant something to the couple. There was an illustration to accompany each table name. The wedding cake was so elegant and sweet at the same time – light pink delicate scroll work on white buttercream, and the cutest bird topper ever! Trae had a UT-themed cake of course! With the large T matching his college ring exactly. Then the couple’s monogram, done in moss, was hanging on the balcony and adorned with muslin flowers to match the muslin wedding date banner that hung below.

The linen choice was bronze jade taffeta, which gave a warm glow to the room with a touch of color. We added lace runners that complemented the treatment on the dark wood chairs. LOVE THIS LOOK! Centerpieces were housed in mercury glass vases and contained a grouping of full and romantic blush and ivory blooms – literally the perfect touch to the gorgeous tablescape. Each place setting had a note for the guest thanking them for coming and a sweet message from the newlyweds! Flip the note over and it revealed a menu that was to die for. Cyndi and Trae’s top priority for the reception was having the 80s tribute band – LC Rocks – perform at their reception. It was a blast. The dance floor was always packed, as was the stage as the band allowed guests to get up and perform with them – FUN! Monogrammed 80s sunglasses were passed out and everyone went wild for a pair. The fun did not end there. A photo booth was on site and kept everyone entertained until the last minutes of the night. Guests were given homemade cotton candy on rock candy sticks as a parting favor, as well as “TEAM SCHULTZ” koozies. Then the guests sent the couple off in a blaze of glory with sparklers. Cyndi and Trae didn’t want the party to end, so they hopped on a Party Bus with their wedding party and celebrated all the way back to Austin.

From the Bride…

Fred and I have always been trying to create a balance between the traditional and the non-traditional in our relationship. These differences are what initially attracted us when we started dating 6 years ago; two months before we graduated high school. I ran around picking wildflowers in a long white hippie skirt. He was an Eagle Scout and helped me with my physics homework. Alas, we were both romantics. We both already had college, and somewhat of our life plans, already figured out. Fred left immediately for the Air Force Academy in Colorado to study Aeronautical Engineering and I went to Baltimore to study photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art. It wasn’t easy, but we made it through four years of long distance and then I took a leap of faith and moved to the middle of nowhere Texas, where he was in pilot training. Fred proposed while we were living in Texas and then halfway through our 7-month engagement we moved to New Mexico, all while planning our New Jersey wedding! At first I wanted a true destination wedding on a warm beach with just our immediate families. Fred wanted to get married in a church with all of our family and friends in attendance. We compromised on our home state of New Jersey with a larger number of guests, still only 85, and I’m thankful we did. I can’t imagine all of our closest friends and family not being there! But I was still set on a non-traditional venue. I went looking for historic venues and wineries in the snow and mud of February and I fell in love with the Prallsville Mill.

There were so many areas at the mill to be used for different functions throughout the day. We were married on the lawn in front of an old red barn on the property. After our recessional guests were directed to the back of the mill, right next to the Raritan Canal and Delaware River for cocktail hour. During which we served crab cakes with chipotle aioli, brie and apricot tarts with a lavender honey drizzle, wild mushroom tarts, tomato basil mozzarella skewers with a pesto drizzle, grilled chicken and pineapple skewers with citrus dipping sauce, and our signature cocktail – white peach sangria. For dinner, we went up to the main level of the mill, which has original wood floors and very deep windowsills perfect for large candles and displaying the wedding photos of our parents and grandparents. We feasted on a baby arugula salad with blueberries and shaved gouda, chicken picatta, roasted vegetable tarts, rosemary roasted red bliss potatoes, and haricot vert. I insisted on a chocolate cake, with chocolate moose and raspberry preserves. We continued the party with hours of dancing in the exposed stone basement where water rushed through the old mill machinery. It was super hot and humid down there; everyone was drenched but no one dared to leave the dance floor, including me!

Wine Country Wedding by Erin Hearts Court

You know…there is a reason that we are kind of obsessed with California weddings on SMP. It’s that they have their own attitude. That laid back, effortless elegance that we love to see in a wedding. Kind of like when your mom taught you that the best applied make-up should look like you aren’t wearing any at all. And this one, sent to us by two of our all time favorite photographers, Erin and Courtney of Erin Hearts Court, completely captures the spirit and the style of California weddings that we love so very much. Plus, all of you DIY brides will obsess over the super cute details it no matter where you live! Click here to see even more.

When Matt and I started our wedding planning, the one thing we knew was that we wanted to get married in a location outside of Los Angeles. We wanted our wedding in a location that was beautiful and effortless, where we could turn our celebration into a weekend event. We started looking at fun locations that were a couple of hours driving from where we live. We looked at venues in Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, and San Diego; but we fell in love with Solvang, a small town in the Santa Ynez Valley. Most of our guests were going to be flying in from all over the country, and even internationally, to celebrate with us. We wanted to pick a place that was unique and that many may not have experienced before. We had been wine tasting in the Santa Ynez Valley and loved it, so we settled on a Central Coast Wine Country wedding!

After we selected a venue, the next vendor we locked down was our photographer! Two seconds after getting engaged, a friend sent me a link to Erin Hearts Court. I fell in love! These two are so amazing, and I knew they had to photograph our wedding. We booked them asap. Next, we needed a wedding planner. Solvang is close enough that we could drive up to meet with vendors when necessary, but far enough to where we couldn’t go up there every other weekend. We needed a really good wedding planner who knew the vendors in the area, and who could help us plan the wedding that we had envisioned. Thank God we found Carla Jacobsen from Special Occasions. I don’t know what we would have done without her. We shared our vision of casual elegance with Carla. We used words like free-spirited, bohemian, romantic, and whimsical – and she made it happen! Carla helped us book all of our vendors, and we couldn’t have been happier with all of her recommendations!

Since we wanted a more casual feel for our wedding, we took a traditional approach with a whimsical twist. Many of our ideas were best executed by old fashioned DIY, and a process of accumulation in the months preceding our wedding. Over a few months we worked with our florist to collect different mismatched containers to display our flowers. I shopped at Goodwill, Etsy, Anthropologie, and friends’ garages for these finds. Instead of having a guest book, we created a well wishes tree. My mom cut 100 tags, by hand, out of pretty card stock so that our guests could leave us a message and tie it to the tree – this doubled as a lovely decoration. Rather than having escort cards, my matron-of-honor (who was 8 months pregnant) wrote out the seating assignments on a chalkboard that I made out of MDF and chalkboard paint (real chalkboards are pretty expensive). Finally, instead of doing the standard favor, we had pashminas for the ladies to use during the reception if they were chilly. I figured it could be something they would use beyond our wedding.

Overall our wedding was everything we wanted. Our ceremony was probably the most amazing 20 minutes of my life. We laughed and cried with the closest people in our lives. We partied all night, ate yummy food, and drank delicious wine! It was an unbelievable experience, and I’m so thankful to everyone that helped us put it together.

Villa Parker Wedding Romance From Cori Cook Floral Design

We’re staying in Colorado this afternoon with a feature sent to us by the delightful Cori Cook! She and a team of amazing wedding professionals worked together with this very stylish bride and groom to create the prettiest-in-pink Colorado wedding ever at Villa Parker!

From Rebecca … the beautiful bride …
Jared and I met through a mutual friend (one of my bridesmaids) on 7/7/07- what a lucky day! He proposed to me on Valentines day two years later and we were engaged for a year and a half before we were married on 8/8/10.

sooooooo many more fabulous ‘getting ready’ shots here in the gallery!

From their photographer, Joan Allen Weddings
When asked by my very talented photographer friend, Jared, and his fiancee, Rebecca, to photograph their wedding just outside of Denver, I couldn’t say no. Rebecca is a Hollywood fashion stylist and Jared is a high profile celebrity photographer. I remember adjectives such as: romantic, vintage and retro being used. They had a specific vision and knew it would be an incredible wedding! They chose the beautiful Villa Parker for the reception location and Erika and Molly went above and beyond to welcome us out-of-towners with their hospitality, even offering to pick up our photo equipment from the local photo lab for us. They did a wonderful job designing the event and I loved the floral arrangements, designed by Cori Cook Floral Design. The stunning bride wore a gown by Romona Keveza and the groom, a custom made suit. I love the unique bridesmaids dresses by Carmen Marc Valvo and the groomsmen suits by Asos . The bridesmaids gifts were original illustrations by the talented fashion illustrater Dallas Shaw.

Our thanks and congratulations to all on a spectacular celebration!

More of the details from Rebecca …

Since Jared and I both lived in Los Angeles we were originally planning an LA wedding but since I grew up in Parker, Colorado part of me always wanted a hometown wedding so I finally entrusted my lovely mother to find the perfect venue with a mixture of indoor and outdoor elements that felt homey and romantic and where I could hang chandeliers from the trees! Once we found Villa Parker everything else fell into place. They have a great list of preferred vendors including Cori Cook Floral Design. Cori and I hit it off right away. She totally understood my romantic style and we both shared a love for SMP! Joan Allen, our photographer, was a friend of ours. We flew her in from LA to capture our big day!

Since I was raised Catholic and my groom is from a Jewish background it was very important to us that we shared both of our traditions during the ceremony. Our ceremony was held in the Catholic church I grew up in with both a priest and a rabbi officiating. This feat was tricky to pull off but of course all of the right people came together and it was beautiful and special. Our kiddush cup and chuppah were both from Jared’s family. At the reception we paid homage to our generations past by displaying wedding photos of our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.

My family is so important to me so I will always vividly remember the warmth of having my mother help me get ready. I smile whenever I see the pictures of her and I in the brides room before the wedding. Having my father walk me down the aisle to meet Jared was very special as well. My veil was very long and dramatic so of course I tripped over it with my first step. It lightened the mood of the ceremony and once I arrived to meet my groom the whole congratulation laughed as he tried to find me through all the tulle of the veil. Seeing him all dressed up and ready to get married gave me butterflies all over again.

Jared and I both agreed that we didn’t want anything that felt “Wedding 101” we knew that we wanted the day to feel warm and intimate and to have a touch of glamour and a slight retro vibe since we both love that style. Jared’s groomsmen wore skinny suits in the style of the Beatles and my bridesmaids wore these cute pink brocade shift dresses that looked to me like a glam Jackie Kennedy. I had the girls wear red lipstick to up the vintage style of the wedding party.

I treated my bridesmaids to custom fashion illustrations by Dallas Shaw. They were so surprised and loved the very chic gift that captured each of their personalities and style! We had a few wedding favors for our guests including cotton candy with tags that read “Jared and Becca shared pink cotton candy on their first date, may their life together be just as sweet”. We arranged the cotton candy bunches by couples so they could share the sweet treat just as we had on our first date. On the back of the tags were the escort cards directing guests to their seats. Instead of traditional table numbers we marked tables with our favorite iconic celebrities like Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Clark Gable etc. . .

At the end of the night we offered sparklers to each guest with a pack of custom matches that read “Jared and Becca, a perfect match”. The sparkler send off was one of my favorite parts of the night. It was exhilarating and fun and the perfect ending to a wonderful reception.

We are dy-ing over this vibrant wedding, sent over to us by the always impressive SheWanders Photography.  Could the bride and groom be any cuter? We wish we could plant ourselves right smack dab in the middle of their completely perfect day full of charm.  It truly looks like such a fun and over the top, happy celebration.  Oh and we’re sorry, but is that a zebra we spy at the wedding?!?  Ummmm, yes please!  Run, don’t walk, on over to the gallery to see more of this wonderful day.  XO, Tori & Myka

See more from this pretty day in the gallery.

From the bride:

Michael and I met at work way back in 2001.  We were both new to the workplace and immediately gravitated toward one another.  It wasn’t long before we were spending time together outside of the work place.  Some days we would go out and watch a movie. On other days we would go and try a new restaurant.  We were so spontaneous back then.  We got along so well that we remained good friends for five years.  It was like we were two peas in a pod.  In the summer of 2006, a mutual friend of ours told me that Michael had feelings for me that went beyond just friendship.  I kept my knowledge of his true feelings a secret and waited for him to make some sort of move.  One day he built up the nerve to ask me out.  He wanted me to come with him to his good friends wedding as his date.  After 2 more months of dating we were officially a couple.  We have the best of both worlds.  We were in love, and we were best friends.  In 2008, Michael proposed to me at Presidio Park in San Diego.  It was the happiest day of my life.

My brother got married at Rancho Las Lomas, in Silverado California, and the venue was simply amazing.  It had a touch of class and displayed the beauty of the California countryside.  I knew right away that this was the place I wanted to get married.  Rancho Las Lomas is an oasis of natural beauty that we will never forget.

The biggest challenge we had to encounter was deciding what type of wedding we were going to have.  I possess a strong Persian background so I wanted our wedding to be traditionally Persian. Michael is of Filipino decent so he wanted to add things that displayed the beauty of his culture as well.  We managed to mesh the two together in a magical wedding that our guests would never forget.  The ceremony was traditionally Persian, with the two of us displayed in front of a Sofreh (a Persian wedding spread).  The Reception had tables named after some of the more popular Philippine Islands.  It also had a live performance from Philippine folk dancers.  The two blended perfectly.  Although it was challenging, the outcome was a testament of all of our hard work.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful day with us!

New York Wedding by Robert Sukrachand

The ladies of Poppies and Posies have done it once again. They have created a masterpiece in the form of crazy gorgeous florals for this swoon-fest captured by Robert Sukrachand. Set on the banks of the Hudson River, this Persian wedding boasts not only an uber stylish couple and a magnificent 18th century mansion to hold all of the festivities but they have donkeys! Really, really cute donkeys. See more of this fantastic New York celebration in the gallery.

From the Bride…

For two people who has absolutely no idea how and where to begin when planning a wedding, we managed to pull together an absolutely perfect weekend. After looking at tons of venues in a few different states we fell upon an exquisite private estate along the Hudson River, about two hours north of the New York City, where we live. The decided on the 70-acre property, which consisted of a stunning 18th century mansion (brilliantly restored by current owner Andre Balazs), a pool over looking the Hudson, a farming complex, two guest houses, and the best part…donkeys! I’m a devout vegetarian and a HUGE animal lover and my parents refused to allow the family shih-tzus to have any part in the wedding, so having the donkeys and sheep be part of our wedding day meant a lot to me.

I wanted our wedding to have the theme of “vintage simplicity”. The first thing that I found was my girls’ dresses in the sale room of Anthropologie. I loved the color and the vintage detailing. Everything just sort of developed from there. The guys’ suspenders, bbq meal and the square dancing played along with the theme.

Here is a look at some of the DIY projects that we did, starting with the flowers…

My friend, Patty, and I made the pew decorations from wheat (since Craig is from Montana) and baby’s breath. My mom was on the “bottle brigade” as she called it. Over a period of 8 months she collected all of the bottles for the table decorations. I purchased the flowers in bulk from Central Market and my friends arranged them in assorted ball jars and bottles the morning of the wedding. My friend Merrill spent the morning with my mom and me making the boutonnieres and the bridesmaids bouquets. My mom and I took apart the bridal bouquet that Central Market had made and added more ranunculus and gomphrena to it. Then we cut burlap garland and lace and wrapped them around the stems.

We also DIY-ed our papergoods. My husband, Craig, painted a watercolor of a jar of flowers that I had at the house. Then we put it into photoshop, shrunk the size of it and put it on business card sized table assignments. For our programs, I downloaded a template for a wedding invitation and then altered the color and design of it to suit a program. The place settings were labels that I got from A Print Lady. I shrunk the size of them and cut them out. Then my friends and family tied them around all of the lemons the morning of the wedding.

Other small DIY details. My friend, Cher, made the burlap runners and applied the monogram “HS” with transfer paper as a decorative detail. My sister, Kelly, and I created the text for the crossword one afternoon. Craig and I worked on the map together. I drew the map and he adorned it with miniature images and signs of places such as the church and the reception venue. Craig and I brought my dresser from Houston for the cakes to sit on. My dress came with a belt which I wasn’t the biggest fan of, so I found a trim that I liked and a new piece of ribbon. I had it sewn on to the dress.

As for advice, I know everyone has already told you this, but the day really does fly by in a blink of an eye. Take a moment to cherish and thank all of the people that have come from far and away to support you and celebrate your marriage. Also try and steal two minutes from the busy timeline of your wedding day for a private moment with your new husband.

A Radiant Colorado Bride ~ Photography by Chad Morgan

I feel like Luke & Kendra’s wedding should be on a super-sized billboard splashed across the Colorado highway! These two ~ dare I say kids? ~ are the epitome of freshness and loveliness and pure & natural LOVE!

Plus ~  I kind of feel like this young lady ought to be on America’s Next Top Model!

See the entire gallery from Chad Morgan here!

Kendra and Luke were married this past summer in a joy-filled (albeit tearful) Colorado ceremony …

Their overwhelming love for each other, and for their loved ones, showcased the day!

From the newlyweds …

How we met ~
We met on our first day of freshmen orientation at Wartburg College. I took note of his warm and firm handshake and his beautiful blue eyes. It turned out that we lived in the same dorm. We became great friends throughout our first semester, often taking long walks around campus to talk. All the while, we were both secretly fighting feelings for each other. Christmas break came and after talking on the phone for many hours, Luke decided to take a leap. He was waiting for me at the bottom of the escalator in the Des Moines airport when I flew back to Iowa in January.

The Proposal ~
We were spending the first half of the 2009 summer in different states, Luke in Wisconsin and I in Colorado. On June 27th, I was staying in a hotel for a night with best friend and my little sister during her basketball tournament. The hotel had a beautiful courtyard and gazebo (I have a thing for gazebos). My sister and I were walking back to our room, and as we started to cross the courtyard, I noticed a man standing in the gazebo. After some time, I realized the man was Luke. He was standing in the gazebo with roses and candles!

The Planning ~
My best friend’s mom was also our wedding planner, Willie Ripple. We wanted our wedding to incorporate the mountains, elegance, and a vintage feel. Also, because our faith is extremely important to us, we wanted to get married in a church. The church, overlooking the Continental Divide was the perfect mountain setting, and the Manor House, nestled in the foothills, provided the perfect vintage Colorado feel. (I am a Colorado girl and love all-things-vintage!)

Making it Their Own ~
Our ceremony was very faith-filled and spiritual because our faith is number one in our lives. We also focused a lot on the “legacy of love” that we were marrying into…years and years of wonderful, committed marriages. We honored all of our family members and their marriages by mentioning them in the ceremony and by displaying family wedding pictures (all the way back to our great-great-great grandparents) at the reception.

Most Memorable Moment (from the bride) … I remember Luke sobbing as I walked down the aisle. I remember turning around and looking at the whole congregation from the altar. I remember that the toasts were incredible…especially my sister’s and my best friends. And finally, I remember the EPIC dance party that ensued after dinner and dessert!!

Can’t remember a sweeter, more beautiful couple, ever ~

Congratulations and thanks to Chad Morgan Photography for sharing!!

Double Happiness Wedding Design From Paisley Quill

We’ve seen some pretty clever modes of transportation at weddings, but this one might just take the cake!

Molly at Paisley Quill has shared a little bit of Alex and Mia’s British wedding with us today on the LBB blog. Before we get to the gorgeous wedding paper accessories that Paisley Quill designed, let’s take a look at the celebration …

Alex and Mia enjoyed a church blessing and reception in the groom’s village of Conington in Cambridgeshire, England, which is best known for it’s pub, The White Swan, on May 29th 2010. As an international couple, with Mia being American and Alex being British, who met in China, they tried to incorporate traditions and influences from their homes and travels. The couple set off from the church in a Chinese PLA motorbike with sidecar and then kicked off their reception by popping magnums of champagne for their guests and mingling while enjoying Austrian marches played by a 20 piece brass band. The Chinese character for double happiness appeared on all of their stationery for the wedding, which was fashioned in the color palette of yellow and pewter grey.

Throughout the meal, the couple led their guests in song and enjoyed speeches made by the Father of the Bride, Best Man and Maid of Honor. Everyone enjoyed the Swedish tradition of the bride and groom leaving the dining room at separate times to allow the men and women to line up and kiss the bride and groom respectively.

The menu reflected New England and English cuisine with a starter of New England Lobster Tails, flown in by the Boston Lobster Company, wrapped in melon with a mango dressing. The main course was Truffled Rack of Lamb and the dessert was a selection of mini pies: lemon meringue, pecan and blueberry accompanied by a shot of homemade strawberry vodka. The cheese course was served at a buffet and consisted of the best selection of British cheeses sourced by Neal’s Yard Dairy.

The wedding cocktail menu was also a compilation of the couples heritage and personal experiences:
Sloegasm: Conington Sloegin mixed with Champagne
Cape Codder: Cranberry juice and vodka with a squeeze of lime
Austrian Shot-ski: 3 shots of Jägermeister off of a ski
Shanghai Nights: Ginger Beer, Lychee Juice and Vodka
Bermudian Dark ‘n Stormy: Ginger Beer and Rum on ice
Barbados Rum Punch: Malibu, Cranberry, Orange and Gingerale on ice
NRA Special: Mount Gay Rum and Coke

On the following day, the wedding guests returned to Conington Hall to witness a Bride vs. Groom cross dressing cricket match, which included a BBQ, afternoon tea, an ice cream truck and plenty of locally brewed beer and cider!

The happy couple plan to honeymoon in Patagonia in February 2011.

Sunny Engagement Session in Tuscany

Last but by no means least is the sweetest little engagement session snapped to perfection by Lelia Scarfiotti. She followed these love birds all over Sienna in Tuscany, Italy (swoon!) and captured not only some gorgeous images but the most perfect light. Love and dreamy light seem to be in abundance in the Italian countryside. They even popped into one of their favorite vintage stores for a few shots. Light, fun, not too serious but perfectly lovely…this is how you rock out an engagement session. See even more from the day in the gallery.

Aren’t they the cutest? A huge thanks to Lelia for sending over this perfect gem. Be sure to stop by the gallery for even more sunshiny goodness.

Thomas Bui Lifestyles: Eat ~ Love ~ Marry

Eat, Love and Marry
We planned this San Diego destination wedding over the course of a year and a half. I can honestly say that Christina and David are two of the dearest people that walk the face of this planet! – Thomas Bui Lifestyles

She ~ a Bio Engineer from Duke …

He ~ a successful CEO …

It only took them two trips to San Diego to finalize the venue and the details!  Now THAT’S a successful destination wedding!!

{see their entire SMP gallery here}

Christina and David are bigger than life, “foodies”.  Thus, their wedding inspiration became: Eat, Love, Marry

At their wedding ~ EAT … well, pretty self-explanatory. In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, they had a dessert buffet table filled with French silk pie, apple pie, blueberry cream pie … each one named after famous song lyrics.

LOVE ~ again, a no-brainer.

MARRY ~ Christina and David hosted a wedding with a lot of personal touches for all their friends and family to remember forever and ever … and always!

… (plus) they invested in several letterpress machines to design and print all their paper goods!

More from Thomas Bui

The Crosby Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe was Christina and David’s venue of choice. The country club had the private and intimate ambiance that they were looking for. Adorations Botanical Artistry provided brilliant, “happy” seasonal spring flowers ~ Yellow Ranunculus, Orange Poppies, Tulips and Hydrangeas. We then added a crushed taffeta linen in a soft sand color which accentuated the vibrant colors in the florals. Christina carried a bouquet filled with the same vivid colors ~ white, orange and yellow flowers that complemented her stunning Vera Wang gown.
