SMP Living Spotlight!

When it comes to stylish living, we don’t mess around. In fact, we started our very own sister site, SMP Living to bring you all sorts of pre (and post!) wedding fabulousness from morning ’til night. And this week? Pretty great, if you ask me. We peeked at everything from the most inspiring of homes to the prettiest of parties. But that’s only the beginning. Have a look at some of our favorites from the week, and hop over to Living for a whole lot more.

If there were ever a home to fall for, this would be the one. Chock-full of colors, patterns, and a big ol’ slice of style, a peek into Amber Interiors’ space is inspiration like you’ve never, EVER seen. But it gets better. Living went behind the blog with Amber to talk everything from the creative process to those guilty pleasures. See it all right here.

It’s Friday, which can really only mean one thing: time to toast to the weekend! And with this Izze Sparkling Grapefruit Cocktail from Yours Truly on the agenda, this weekend is looking to be oh-soooo-sweet.

A library-themed baby shower is maybe the most genius idea ever. But when designed by Honey & Fitz, that genius gets taken to a whole new level. One look at this pretty little party, and you’ll be inspired to host your next shindig in serious style.

Mendocino Wedding from Mary Costa Photography

This wedding is amazing.  And not just because of the jaw-droppingly gorgeous scenery and two sweeties that you just can’t take your eyes off of.  No, it also happens to be amazing, because those aforementioned sweeties?  They really know how to throw a pretty party.  One that includes the fab stylings of Mendocino Weddings, a crazy awesome intimate vibe and one heartwarming moment after another captured by Mary Costa Photography.  Oh, and there’s karaoke.  Need I say more?  See it all in the full gallery.

From Mary Costa Photography… Summer and Andrea met years ago, and Summer instantly vowed to whoever would listen that if Andrea was ever interested, she would do whatever it took to be with her. Eventually their paths crossed again years later, and Summer kept her word – they fell deeply in love and have been inseparable ever since! They knew they wanted a small, intimate wedding with lots of personal details. Summer’s father’s private home in Mendocino, CA provided the perfect location. They were married on a cliff side in his backyard, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by their closest family and friends. They asked that everyone wear something blue, and Andrea’s sister acted as the officiant. Their day was full of details that honored them as a couple – including their favorite drinks, a personalized menu, and a self-designed logo stamp to commemorate their day. They also included their love of karaoke as main feature in the evening’s party! They traveled to New York a few days after their California ceremony and legalized their marriage at City Hall. Summer and Andrea are a beautiful balance – Summer is full of energetic tenacity, and Andrea has a gentle sweetness about her. Their joy is truly contagious. Wishing these two every happiness!

Rustic

From Unity Weddings… Lee and Ruwan came to me over a year and half ago. They had seen photos of a wedding I had done at Cote Nord (featured on Style Me Pretty, actually), and fell in love with the romantic and intimate feeling of the place. With a small guest list of 60 of their closest friends and family, and most of their vendors lined up, they wanted my help mostly with the decor. Using Lees inspiration palette of soft pinks, lavenders, and cream, I designed a decor for her that would fit right in with the rustic nature of the venue. I inserted wood runners under her flowers, to tie in with the very woods-y feel of the building. The wood runners were actually simple two by fours that I purchased and custom cut at my local hardware store. The brides father hand-carved little wooden owls to give to everyone as a keepsake. And since the bride wanted her flowers in milk glass, but also wanted to keep things budget-friendly, we purchased Ikea carved glasses and spray-painted them a pearl-y cream colour. The result was simple, warm, and intimate, just like the party itself.

Bridal Shoe Round Up

I have to admit, this post is a wee bit selfish. You see it’s Friday, and my mind tends to wander as the week comes to a close. Luckily, getting lost in lovely just so happens to fall nicely in my job description, and today I shall spend more time than I should perusing our galleries drooling over, what else? Shoes. The SMP shoe archives are what my dreams are made of – so I thought I would bring in all my SMP Illinois lovelies in on the pretty party by sharing some of my favorite shoe moments on SMP. Did leave any out you can’t believe I missed? Let me know! I’ll happily take some time to look at some more…

Rustic Wedding from Jennifer Laura Design + Bertuzzi Photography

This wedding takes me to my happy place.  A place where sweet rustic details, an adorable duo and a Texas-style dance party reign supreme.  Because this is the kind of wedding where you kick off your high heels, soak in all of the beauty styled to perfection by Jennifer Laura Design and have the time of your life celebrating true love with a group of friends and family that really know how to have a good time.  See it all captured by Bertuzzi Photography right here in the full gallery.

From Jennifer Laura DesignThis was a gorgeous wedding I planned and designed, the wedding reception was held at the groom’s uncle’s farm and they got married at a nearby church. They wanted a wildflower look with some rustic details thrown in- as a planner I know rustic has been done and DONE, so I tried to throw in a few twists and turns with the details.

New Zealand Wedding from Peta Mazey

I’m pretty sure if I was invited to this wedding captured by Peta Mazey, I would still be there. Because there is no way I’d ever want to leave.  Not only was it hosted at the Groom’s gorgeous family farm, but it is overflowing with personal touches crafted by this duo and their talented family. I’m talking personalized, hand made spoons for each guests – that level of personal. From the dress to the flowers to the cake and right down to the food they ate, this talented group of folks created not just a lovely wedding, but one with a whole lot of heart. See it all here.

From Peta MazeyChloe and Matt’s Taupo, New Zealand wedding was a total DIY showcase, with nearly every detail being overseen by the couple and their friends and family. The wedding was held on Matt’s family dairy farm, with an addition to a hay barn being made to make for the perfect reception venue. The ceremony was officiated by Chloe’s grandmother and Matt’s family minister. Matts sister hand made the personalized spoons for each guest, the boys hunted all the meat for the day. One of Chloes sisters designed the dress and her school friend made it. Chloe even baked her own cake and decorated it with flowers from Matt’s mother’s garden. Chloe’s friend Liora from Toodles Noodles was the head designer/decorator and other friends pitched in to do flowers and hair. The list goes on and on… This couple have some talented loved ones. Beyond all the pretty details it was a day full of joy and love and fun, reflective of this awesome couple. The cricket was a hit, with the bride even having a bat in her wedding dress!

Boston Four Seasons Wedding from Shane Godfrey Photography

One thing I know for certain?  Shane Godfrey is awesome.  He’s super sweet, super talented and sends us some of the prettiest weddings you will ever lay your eyes upon.  Case in point?  This gorgeous little number held at the ever-amazing Four Seasons, aka, a traditional stunner with beautiful blooms from Winston Flowers, a Vera Wang masterpiece and all kinds of amazing moments that will literally make your heart sing. (Seriously.)  See every last one right here in the full gallery.

From Shane GodfreyI met Olga and Patrick only a few short weeks before their wedding, and I happened to still be available for their wedding date. We immediately clicked at our first consultation. Being a small business owner, Patrick and I started talking web tools and he actually got me interested in both Paypal and a signature service called Hellofax which I still use today! (Thanks Pat!)

We started the day at the Four Seasons where the girls got ready and Olga got into her amazing Vera Wang dress and Jimmy Choo shoes. The guys got ready at their apartment in Beacon Hill, and walked down to the Boston Gardens where we met up for a first look with the bride and groom in the middle of the garden. We then walked around and finished up all the photos before the ceremony started inside the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel. Patrick’s father was actually the acting officiant for their wedding ceremony. They were such an easy couple to photograph and it was clear to see that they are a couple in love. As a result, the photos of the bride and groom were a breeze, and the party kept on going through the night until we finished out with a sparkler send off. But not just your typical sparkler send off. They ordered three foot long sparklers which put out some serious light for some great end of the evening photographs!

Ask the Expert: Simply Put Vintage Rentals

We’re back with another edition of our Ask the Expert series, and oh boy are we are excited. We’re breaking down the barriers between bride and wedding pro, getting your wedding questions answered by some of our sweetest LBBers. Today we have Kaitlin Briley of Simply Put Vintage Rentals talking all things vintage and all things rental. For you readers in North Carolina, you’re lucky because you can work with Kaitlin for your big day. The rest of us are going to be living vicariously through you.

Let’s meet the lady behind the rentals, Kaitlin Briley:

ATE_simplyput

I love the vintage look, but am unsure what is available to rent and what I’d be better off buying myself. Any advice?

Here’s a good rule of thumb when deciding what to buy and what to rent: are you planning on using it in your new home? If you are already in the market for a beautiful vintage sofa to put in your new living room, or a set of teacups to add to your collection, then buy away! But if you were planning on reselling the vintage items later I would recommend renting them. I’ve spoken with a lot of brides who bought items for their wedding with the hopes of selling them once they were married. In theory, it sounds like a good idea because you would think you would be saving money. But in actuality you would most likely have to spend money to store the pieces, to get them fixed up, and then it would take time post-wedding to sell them all back. It turns out to be much more work than most people bargain for! The weeks following your wedding you want to be enjoying the memory of the day, not tying up loose ends! Another plus side to renting pieces is you don’t have to sacrifice quality for budget. Yes, you may be able to buy a sofa at the flea market for the same amount you can rent one, but the quality of the two are very different. Don’t get me wrong, I love raw flea market finds. They can be beautiful! But a lot of times what brides see on blogs and magazines are pieces that have had a lot of effort and love put into repainting and reupholstering them. That is why renting is such a great option for brides. You get the uniqueness found in a curated collection of pieces, without any of the work!

What piece has the greatest impact on creating that vintage feel, if I can only afford to rent one big thing?

For an outdoor ceremony I recommend a large architectural piece, whether it is the entrance into the ceremony or the backdrop. An architectural piece will stand out, surprise guests (in a good way!), and be unique to your wedding. For an indoor reception I would recommend a lounge area. Sofas and chairs can add so much color, texture, and style to your wedding. A beautiful lounge area can be a great tool in setting the feeling for the rest of the wedding.

What should I expect from my rental company when it comes to pick up, set up, and tear down? Am I responsible for all of that?

At Simply Put we take care of delivery, set up, tear down and take away for all of our couples, however some rental companies may allow you to pick up and bring back their pieces. There are many reasons why companies have delivery services, but the main one is safety. It would be really easy for a groomsmen to throw their back out right before the wedding lifting hundreds of pounds of pews! When renting furniture always ask for a delivery quote from the company so there are no surprises down the road. They will typically calculate it based on the size of your order and the distance they will travel, so keep that in mind when putting together your rental order!

What kinds of items do you have available for rent that might surprise me (i.e. what am I forgetting??)?

When people first think of renting vintage items they typically think of sofas, chairs, tables, and china. However, there are so many other interesting pieces out there that may surprise you. Many vintage rental companies rent architectural pieces like windows, doors, posts, and archways. At Simply Put, we have a fabulous set of “London Doors,” 1800s doors set in their original doorframe with original glass panes and hardware. Our doors are often used at outdoor ceremonies so the bride can have her big reveal before walking down the aisle.

How do I calculate how many tables, what kind of seating, and how many vintage decor pieces I will need?

How many vintage pieces you incorporate into your day is completely up to you! At Simply Put we have a large collection of seating, so we could seat your whole ceremony with pews and your whole reception with eclectic chairs. The quantity of what you rent will be dependent on two factors: your guest count and the quantity the vintage rental company offers. For example, if you are having 200 guests to your urban loft wedding and you are serving heavy hors d’oeuvres, you may consider having a mix of 6-8 lounge areas and 10-12 farm tables. It is always a good idea to do a walk through of your space with your coordinator/designer to discuss flow and aesthetics.

I’m not a very creative bride, but I love the vintage look. Should I come to you with a detailed idea of what I want, or do you help with design too?

At Simply Put we love to help brides design and create their dream wedding space! We offer styling and design packages that range from initial inspiration all the way to day of design and installation. Some, not all, vintage rental companies offer styling and design services. When approaching a wedding stylist it is always a good idea to come with inspiration in hand! We work with couples that have varying styles and stories, and we love to get to know the couple before we begin working on their space. Whether you are a bride who has too many ideas to keep track of, or you are at a complete and utter stand still, designers can help organize and inspire you! Hiring a designer for your wedding day can be great if you were planning on doing it yourself, you have a coordinator but no one to take care of the décor, or if your event planner is awesome but you want another creative mind involved. Typically, if a vintage rental company offers styling and design services they have a good eye, especially when it comes to furniture placement and display design. But it is always a good idea to ask to see some of their work to make sure your aesthetics match!

Saddlerock Ranch Wedding from Kristeen LaBrot Events

There’s nothing like a first look. Whether it’s a quiet moment made for two or a grand entrance down the aisle, it’s the one thing that gets me weak at the knees every. single. time. But this first look, my loves, is special. It’s some of the sweetest emotion I’ve seen, so perfectly captured by the pros of Next Exit Photography. And while that alone is enough to send me swooning from here to Timbuktu, the entire wedding designed by Kristeen LaBrot Events is, in a word, magical. See it all for yourself right over here.

From the Bride…Like many couples, our wedding theme and colors metamorphosed throughout the engagement process. What started as elegant with carnival fun morphed into modern vintage and netted out somewhere around modern-fun with a vintage flare. We also love arrows, as they symbolize direction and leading; when lost, an arrow points you in the right direction. We used them when appropriate (on the hospitality bags, directional signs, escort cards, bridesmaid necklaces, in the feathered centerpieces, and crossing through our wedding cake).

The location wasnt significant in a historical sense; we fell in love with Saddlerock Ranch because it was the rare combination of a winery and working ranch. The grapes were full on the vines as zebras, horses, buffalo and peacocks greeted guests on the approach. At night, hanging twinkle lights adorned the weeping willows, creating the illusion of an enchanted forest. It really is a magnificent location, unlike any other we visited.

Upon arrival, guests were greeted with cool Izzes filled with fun paper straws. To encourage conversation, we had a directional sign pointing to landmarked locations in our lives, noting the distance to each site (where we were born, went to college, currently live, etc.).  Guests were also invited to sign our guest book: a working antique typewriter set on a vintage dresser featuring flowers spilling out of the drawers.  Since the wedding was on a working ranch, we wanted to take advantage of the picturesque surroundings. After the ceremony, guests were welcome to play a bean-bag-toss game that had each of our silhouettes painted on opposing boards. (The game is often called cornhole, but seriously, who came up with that name.) My sister worked with an artist in San Francisco to paint the silhouettes. We worked with our fabulous wedding planner Kristeen LaBrot to have individual Pink Lady apples house each of the guests escort cards. Guests were then encouraged to use the apple to feed our four-legged wedding guests (mainly the horses). My sister worked with another San Francisco artist to design, create and paint a mock kissing booth, which was filled with Hersheys kisses for fun photo opportunities.

Upon arrival at the reception site (approx. 50 yards from the ceremony site), ladies were encouraged to change into comfy slip-on Mary Janes (to prevent heels sinking in the ground) and offered shawls for evening chills (with a sign that read: Shawls, Yall!). One of the best and unique parts of the wedding happened about halfway through the reception. My sister (MOH) and Robs best friend (Best Man) gave beautiful speeches as dinner was wrapping. When the band-leader got back on the mic, in a moment of bridal nightmare, she announced that the band was having technical difficulties. Just as my inner Bridezilla prepared to unleash, my parents and 18 of their closest friends reported to the dance floor with a full, choreographed flash mob set to Taio Cruzs Dynamite.  We later learned the choreography was the result of a summer spent in Arthur Murray dance class (six weeks!).  Hands down, it was one of our favorite moments of the weekend.

Around midnight, the band switched over to a DJ as a taco cart began serving up street tacos filled with chicken, carne asada, and veggies. When the evening came to a close and the DJ started to pack up, the Top 40 hits were soon replaced by chants of Same Time, Next Week! from our friends. As guests departed, we offered a coffee and hot chocolate station (complete with all the fixins, of course) for a hot to-go beverage. And, to prevent any next day fallout, we offered hangover helpers  complete with Advil, Starbucks Via packs, and Altoids. It was an extraordinary day for which we will always be grateful.

Toronto Baby Shower by With Love Heather

Hailing from Toronto myself, I always get weirdly excited when we feature a local party. And this sweet tea party-fused baby shower is just the ticket. The best part? This brilliant mama had her guests paint personalized onesies for her little one, ensuring a great wardrobe and memories that will last for years to come. Captured by With Love Heather, there’s a whole gallery filled to the brim with adorableness that shouldn’t be missed.

From Sarah, the mommy-to-be… I am a girly girl and wanted my shower to portray the flirtiness of girl (though we weren’t sure yet if we were having a boy or a girl!) Having been to many showers before, it was really important to me for it to be fun for everyone involved. Unfortunately, many showers can be a yawn and I wanted to be sure my family and friends would enjoy themselves. Apparently I was successful as many people told me “This is the best baby shower we have ever been to!” The combination of onesie painting, plate signing, inspirational words on note cards, games, great food and drink, and of course the guests made it happen.

One of my favorite moments was looking around the room and knowing everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves. My good friend, Addie, wrote a song for my baby, and my father showed up at the end to give me a big hug which really was the icing on the cake.

Brooklyn Wedding at The Green Building from Heidi Benjamin Photography

If this breathtaking Brooklyn wedding doesn’t make your entire weekend (+ week + month + year), then I don’t know will.  And I am sooo serious, lovelies.  Because this wedding?  This DIY masterpiece held at the ever-amazing Green Building?  It’s downright amazing.  With a bride and groom who couldn’t be cuter (don’t miss their true love fairytale below), a plethora of vintage-inspired details and a cozy meets intimate vibe that is all kinds of wonderful.  See it all captured by Heidi Benjamin Photography in the full gallery.  It’s a beauty.

From the Bride… My wedding was a magical day, to say the least. Each time I look through our photos or watch our video of the day, I’m immediately taken back to the day – the blizzard, our nearest & dearest, the cozy atmosphere we created in The Green Building, the sheer joy of it all. I hope that by looking at these photos you feel like you were right there, too!

Michael and I met one cold night in December 2009 while shopping for ribbon at Kate’s Paperie on W. 57th Street. We chatted for a bit but left without exchanging numbers. With every step outside the store, I wanted to go back and introduce myself, but I was too shy. Our story is epic– and includes posting a Craigslist Missed Connection notice and a time span of many months plus help from our good friends. Finally, we found each other again! “Kate’s Paperie Boy” and I celebrated my Sound of Music opening night performance over martini’s and sealed the night with a kiss. We’ve been together ever since!

We managed to pull off the whole she-bang – from engagement to “I do!” – in about three months. It was pretty fast, but once we got engaged we just couldn’t wait to get married! We got engaged just before Thanksgiving – right at the height of business for my baking company – so after we nailed down the date, the venue, the dress, and the officiant, we had to put most of the rest of the planning on hold until after the holidays. The majority of the details were figured out the month before! Sounds crazy, I know, but the good thing about it was that I didn’t have time to second guess myself. I had to trust my instincts and own personal style and go with it. The wedding that we ended up having was so personal, so heartfelt, and so us. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Although we looked at various venues Upstate, we decided on The Green Building here in Brooklyn in order to make it easier on our guests traveling in from out of town. Neither of our families live on the East Coast. This wound up being an enormous blessing, because we had a blizzard on our wedding day! Thank Heaven for public transportation! It was an added bonus that The Green Building is simply gorgeous! Those vaulted ceilings, chandeliers, and rows and rows of exposed brick – quite the romantic backdrop.

After reading A Practical Wedding by Meg Keene (A must read for every Bride on a budget), I became charmed by the fact that for hundreds of years weddings happened in the home – in parlours, in living rooms, in backyards. Anyone who’s ever lived in NYC knows that it would be difficult to fit ten people, let alone two large families and a group of friends into a living room, so we decided to bring our living room – our parlour – into The Green Building. We wanted it to feel like an extension of our individual apartments in one, new space – our first dinner party as a married couple. Almost all of the items – decor, serving-ware, furniture – are items that we have each collected over the years. Bringing our own things also helped keep costs down! Also, as we met buying ribbon, there was a slight ribbon theme in the decor and graphics – how could there not be?

Having a small baking business in Brooklyn, I know quite a few amazing vendors, so when it came time to decide on flowers, dessert, food, and a few of the furniture rentals, I went with my favorites. This only added to the feeling that our friends and family were truly surrounding us on our big day – supporting and celebrating this enormous, crazy, wonderful commitment.

Some of our favorite details…

Our cocktails: My company, Butter + Love, uses a lot of jam, specifically Bonne Maman jam. I have a hard time throwing things away, so by the time we got engaged I had collected almost 300 Bonne Maman jam jars! When trying to figure out what to do for our signature cocktail, I had the idea to pre-mix the cocktail in the jars – when it came time to hand them out to guests all the bar tender had to do was unscrew the lid, add some ice and add a straw and stir stick! They looked adorable all piled up on the bar. And I love a gingham lid.

Our favors: I made Red Velvet sandwich cookies (with a cream cheese/white chocolate ganache) and piled them in clear boxes topped with a hand-made pom pom on top. Adorable and delicious!

Our cake: I wasn’t going to have a wedding cake – and rather, have a dessert table using the amazing creations of my talented friends. However, when Jen (of Liddabit) heard that she told me she was making me a cake and wouldn’t take no for an answer! I gave her my recipe for Guinness Chocolate Cake and she created a four-tiered, choclate-y buttercream masterpiece! We loved it!

Our cake toppers: Michael’s father, Steve, hand carved our initials out of wood from his home in Portland, Oregon. He wasn’t sure which grain would best suit our decor, so he made three sets out of three different types of wood! We were able to place the other two sets around the room. It was a very sweet gesture.

A few things that made this wedding-on-a-budget possible…

1) Recruiting friends and family to help with set-up and tear down. It takes a village to throw a budget-friendly wedding. We are forever grateful for the help we had.
2) We had a small ceremony, followed by an intimate dinner, and then opened up the reception to a larger group of guests, serving light, party food. This allowed us to have the sit down, family style meal we wanted while not breaking the bank.
3) We had an off-season wedding and got married on a Friday night. Thinking a bit outside the box with when/where your wedding happens opens up a lot of possibilities for a unique day!

A note about one of the photos — There is a photo of our wedding rings wrapped in ribbon – that is the ribbon Michael bought the night we met. Cue: Awwww.

Fernandina Beach Wedding from Tonya Beaver Photography

I could get lost in Florida weddings forever, and I often find myself doing just that. For instance, this morning I spent far longer than I would care to admit with this beauty at the Oyster Bay Yacht Club captured by Tonya Beaver Photography. Because, really, how can you not linger a little longer with a wedding this lovely? It’s filled to the brim with pretty, and you can linger as long as you like right here in the full gallery of images.

From Tonya BeaverCaroline and David had an amazing wedding day. It was in spring time which in Florida is generally really warm, but a random cold front came through and made the day FREEZING. These two didn’t care about any of the cold weather or expected rain, they just wanted to get married. And that they did. I met Caroline and the girls at a little condo beside Oyster Bay Yacht Club for their getting ready shots. I loved Caroline’s choice of colors and decor. From there we headed over to the boats to capture David’s getting ready shots on the family yacht. The setting on the water made for some really fun wedding. The ceremony started, and it was so moving. There was not a dry eye in the place. My favorite moment was when they each put a note in a box that Caroline’s grandfather made, and the officiant locked the box with a key. Later guests were asked to write notes to the couple which was also included in this box. On their first year anniversary they will open the box to relive all the emotion from their wedding day and the start of their new life together. After the ceremony, we did a few photos around the club. The lighting was gorgeous, and the couple to me just looked like models.

The reception was FUN to say the least. The cold air blew through the porch the whole night, but everyone was having so much fun that nothing else mattered. The toasts were incredibly entertaining especially when David’s two brothers got up to speak. David was embarrassed (not to mention their poor mother)! We cut the cake + cupcakes and headed back out for more fun. The couple slipped outside with me to take a few “night time shots” out by an old oak tree then we slid them through their exit with all of their guests waving sparklers around them. What a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Carmel Wedding at Holman Ranch from OneLove Photography

These two are one seriously adorable duo.  The kind of adorable duo that each sends in a description (I sooo love that) and plans a breathtaking Holman Ranch affair that is all about DIY awesomeness and sharing the day with their uber-amazing (+ uber-crafty) friends and family.  They are also the kind of duo that doesn’t just plan a wedding, they plan an epic party.  One that is chock-full of vibrant hues, personality-inspired details and one gorgeous image after another (cute pig included) captured by onelove photography.  See them all in the full gallery.

From the Bride… We love throwing theme parties, and since the theme of the wedding was us and a kind of culmination of our 12-year relationship, we knew we were going to go crazy on the personalization front. We wanted to highlight the best of California, so most everything was local, seasonal, homegrown, and community-driven. A friend made our invitations using photos Christian took of Carmel Valley (reproduced in the program we made); Christian brewed all the beer; a groomsman with a knack for mixology created a signature cocktail; my DJ brother got everyone dancing; a family friend made the delicious lemon cake; and my super-artsy sister Katherine did all the signage, escort cards, and table signs depicting things that are meaningful to us… a cypress tree, Half Dome, a pig. We just wanted the wedding to reflect our love and friendship, and the love we have for our families and friends. And we wanted it to be an awesome party.

Holman Ranch is so gorgeous, we really didnt have to do much to it, but I still wanted a lot of beautiful flowers. I told the florist I wanted it to look like I’d been to a meadow and scooped up an armful of wildflowers, something I’ve definitely never done. She nailed it. She even incorporated hops into the boutonnieres perfect for our beer-enthusiast crew. Also, Christian has been succulent-obsessed since he was a kid (our house in San Diego is like a cactus sanctuary), so we incorporated those wherever we could… the centerpieces, the bouquets, the boutonnieres.

My favorite decoration was probably the cake stand, which our San Diego friends recognized as the famous Geisel Library at UCSD, where we met. It was actually my mom’s idea, and once we took it and ran with it, she confessed that she’d been half-joking when she suggested it. But it turned out so cool! Bonus: It was really delicious.

Keep things in perspective and have fun! That seems obvious, but it can get lost in the strive-for-perfection shuffle. If you ever find yourself saying, “This is more trouble than it’s worth and I wish it were over already,” my advice is to change something up or let something go.

We do something we call the Swim Meet Test. As swimmers in college, traveling to big meets meant packing a laundry list of items: sweats, T-shirts, practice suits, energy bars, extra caps, towels… nervous energy tells you to bring all kinds of stuff just so you have it. But really, all you absolutely require are your goggles and your racing suit. If you forget the rest, you can figure it out when you get there or go without, but you really need those items. With the wedding, we were doing so much ourselves that at times, it seemed like some stuff just wasn’t going to get done. Rather than get discouraged, we’d remind each other that the Swim Meet Test says all we really need is a marriage license, someone authorized to sign it, and each other. All the other stuff, while fun, is somewhat superfluous. Remembering that kept our stress levels low and that helped all the extra tasks get done.

The whole day was a total blast, but our ceremony was definitely a highlight for me. I felt so present, so aware and grateful that this amazing day was finally happening, and that all of the people I love most in the world were there to celebrate it with us. We felt like we were entirely surrounded and supported by the people who know us best. One of my dearest friends got ordained to marry us, and Im so glad we did that. Christian wrote one of the readings, his 94-year-old grandmother read a song shed written, and we wrote our own vows. We spent so much time working out all these details to make it a great party and a true reflection of us, but in the end, my No. 1 highlight was marrying this wonderful man, my best friend.

From the Groom… We’re both native Californians, and we both prefer a do-it-yourself project rather than a ready-made product… I think that was reflected in a lot of the larger choices and smaller touches that went into the wedding. We both have ties to the region; my grandparents and Kersten’s parents live nearby, and my parents recently moved to the area as well. The venue is an old ranch, and the setting really takes you back to historic California, before Silicon Valley, before Hollywood. Holman Ranch is amazing on its own, so we didn’t need to add much in terms of decorations, but we had a few extra touches, some of our own projects, some plants from our gardens at home for the centerpieces, etc. One of my favorite personal touches was the beer we served, we’re both fans of good craft beer, so I brewed all the beer we served. I started about five months out and made five types: a lager, a pale, an IPA, a saison, and a brown ale. They all turned out pretty good, and it seemed like people enjoyed them. And now we have some leftover bottles that we can drink to remember our day.

I collect cactus and succulents, I probably have more than a hundred different types at home, and we made the centerpieces to reflect this (aeoniums in little rustic wood planter boxes). And we had a different take on the guest book, asking guests to write notes on leaves and birds and add them to a panel covered with birch tree wallpaper, leftover from a project in our house. That panel was in an old French door frame, as were two additional screens that held the escort cards and some photos of us. The frames were a Craigslist find from an old mansion in Coronado. And we met at UC San Diego, so the wedding cake was a representation of the multi-tiered library at UCSD. That was something I think all of our college friends got right away.

This isnt really advice, just a comment: I’m really glad we had the wedding where we did more than just being a great location that had meaning to both of us, there was an added, unanticipated benefit of getting married an 8-hour drive from our home in San Diego. We did almost all of the projects at home, and they had to be finished ahead of time so that they could be transported up to Carmel Valley. So by the time Kersten and I got up there a few days before the wedding, there was nothing really left to do, and we could relax a bit instead of stressing out over last-minute things.

From start to finish, it was a really great day. This is one of the very few occasions, perhaps the only one where you’re able to bring together such a big group of your family and close friends. It was really terrific to have people from all walks of our life together to celebrate. As far as the wedding goes, the ceremony was awesome, we’re both really glad we wrote our own vows, and we were married by one of Kersten’s childhood friends, who did a great job. We had a few readings, including one by my Grandmother, and it was very meaningful to both of us that she was able to be a part of the ceremony. The weather was amazing, dinner was incredible, dancing was a lot of fun, and we had a big group stay for the after-party in the game room on the property. Another highlight: Seeing my beautiful bride for the first time on our wedding day, and watching her come down the aisle.

San Juan Capistrano Wedding from onelove photography

We love a good getaway shot. And when that getaway is awash with sparkle? Even better. This is an exit that deserves to be framed front and center on the wall. It’s gorgeous and fits right in with the rest of this villa affair so brilliantly captured by onelove photography. With a soft color palette of romantic pastels, white blooms by Floral Occasions grouped with a killer dessert spread and aforementioned send-off, you’re sure to find a whole lot to love in the full gallery as well as in the accompanying film shot by Lunch Pail Pictures.

Villa

From the Bride…Sean and I adore food, drink, and great company. When we first drafted our guest list, there was approximately 250 friends and family members that came to mind. When we visited the Villa in San Juan Capistrano and heard their max occupancy of 150, we knew we would have to make it work! The intimate setting, exceptional staff, and unique menu choices sealed the deal for us. As a couple, we get so much enjoyment out of creatively presented and tasty food, delicious specialty cocktails, and of course, desserts. Our vows and ceremony reflected the ease and passion that Sean and I share in our relationship. With our affirmations and promises to each other, our love was completely evident from the very beginning. We got such special feedback from our guests, which assured us that we really did portray our life long commitment to each other on that most incredibly memorable day!

Our word of advice is to be flexible and organized. Plan in advance and plan certain things together. Sean and I had so much fun looking at venues, tasting food and desserts, taking dance lessons, and completing DIY projects, like wooden signs. Try and give up a little bit of the control in order to keep it fun! Sean planned the whole honeymoon to Ireland and whenever I felt stressed about planning, he reminded me that he had a ton of surprises in store for us! Remember that your wedding day is for the two of you and everyone is there to celebrate your vows to each other (not to judge your choice of this or that)!

Until the day of the wedding, I really did not experience any nerves. The minute my mind and body realized, “We’re getting married today!”, it all kicked in. Our favorite memories from the day were our first look (which I highly recommend), our alone time to “cheers” and have appetizers and practice our dance in between pictures and cocktail hour. The speeches perfectly captured the sentiment of our closest friends and family. The day went by in a snap and we can’t wait to relive it over and over when we see our video.

The whole team at the Villa, led by Eric & Michelle were an absolute pleasure to work with. They go above and beyond to make the bride, groom, families, and guests feel happy and taken care of. They provided support whenever and wherever we needed. They contributed to the intimate and elegant feel of our day!

The Perfect Day in Seattle from Katie Parra

If you were ever thinking of planning a trip to the beautiful city of Seattle, consider this a sign. I’m quite confident you won’t regret your decision. And with a big help from Katie Parra, we have your first day totally and completely planned. So I urge you to take this itinerary for a spin, and come back and thank us later!  Oh, and to see more from Katie’s incredible day in Seattle you should check out the gallery. It’s well worth a peek.

From Katie… Seattle has become my adoptive hometown over the past five years, which is the longest I’ve lived anywhere since I left home for college some years ago. My husband and I joke that we have lived in all four corners of the U.S. and as wonderful and amazing as those places are the Pacific Northwest just feels like home. I am thrilled when friends and family come to visit, not just because I love to see them, but because I love how surprised they are when they discover Seattle for themselves. We are surrounded by water and mountains and there is an endless amount of things to do and see. Being here five years I feel like I have just scratched the surface of all the incredible things to explore.

PLANNING A PERFECT DAY…
So when my friends and family come to visit I find myself planning a “perfect first day” to ensure a great start to their first time in Seattle. I’m sure you could plan many perfect first days in Seattle with the amazing diversity of sights and restaurants, but this is my version. A day filled with fabulous food, thought provoking art, and of course shopping! In my Seattle, the day begins and ends with being on the water – which to me is absolute heaven. So make yourself comfortable and follow along with me on my version of the perfect first day in Seattle.

TO START…
Our day begins in the Admiral neighborhood of West Seattle, which is where I live. I don’t like to drive and pay to park downtown so I take the water taxi. We find free parking on Harbor Ave and after a short walk catch the water taxi down by Seacrest Park. It’s only four dollars each way and the taxi drops you off right on the waterfront downtown. There is no better view of the city than from that boat. It’s absolutely breathtaking. Once downtown we walk the waterfront north towards Pike’s Place Market. Along the way there is a lot to see: the beautiful new Ferris wheel, the aquarium, street performers, and multiple ferry terminals. Try to avoid the tourist trap stores and Starbucks….trust me what’s coming is much better!

THE MARKET…
It’s about a fifteen minute walk up to the market that includes some stairs….ok lots of stairs! But there is an elevator at one point if you feel like you need one. Downtown is very hilly, almost like a little San Fran, so wear comfortable walking shoes. No trip to Seattle is complete without a visit to Pikes Place Market. You feel like you are on a movie set that has flowers, produce, and seafood as far as the eye can see. I like to start off by having breakfast at Crêpe De France. Its tucked back in a quiet little corner and has the most delicious crepes. They have a huge variety consisting of sweet and savory options. I go for the classic nutella and strawberry combo….just scrumptious! Their coffee is also delicious and the staff is always friendly.

THE SHOPPING…
Next we walk through part of the market and make a detour to Post Alley to a little shop called Watson Kennedy Fine Living. It can be found adjacent to The Inn at the Market. Set in a beautiful ivy clad courtyard this store just oozes charm and beckons any passerby to enter and be dazzled by all the goodies inside. Lotions and soaps from France, classic dish ware and linens, stationary, books, jewelry, the list goes on and on. You won’t want to leave this store! They have another larger store on First Avenue which I can only imagine would take an entire day to peruse.

TO SEE…
After we have stopped drooling over all the fabulous things in Watson Kennedy, we make our purchases and head to Pine St. We will eat our way back through the market later but first we have another classic Seattle landmark to visit – the Space Needle. At the Westlake center on Pine and 5th you can catch the monorail that will take you across town to the Space Needle. The above ground monorail drops you off right in the heart of the Seattle Center and costs a mere $2.25 each way for adults. It departs each station every 10 minutes.

At the Space Needle we buy a combination ticket that will give us access to not only the top of the Space Needle but the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit. The price to get into both is $35. The Space Needle staff are very organized and efficient with how they get everyone through the line and up to the top. I think the longest I’ve ever waited in line during high season was 15 minutes. Once in the elevator it only takes 40 seconds to get the top observation deck. I find myself always holding my breath but the views are so worth it! Once at the top you are staring out over Elliot Bay, Puget Sound, downtown, South Lake Union, Rainier and both the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges. Downtown Seattle is one of the prettiest in the country. It truly sparkles.

Once down our 40 second elevator ride back to the ground we make a short walk next door to the Chihuly Glass exhibit. There are simply no words to describe the artistic genius that is Dale Chihuly. Once you walk in you literally hear a collective gasp as everyone around you sees what this man can do with glass. The installations are over the top and dazzling. All I can say is that I wish I had come sooner. You will soon forget about how you winced at that $35 ticket price earlier because you will…be…so…amazed. For more information on Dale Chihuly and his work click here.

TO EAT…
I don’t know about you, but at this point, I’m hungry! We catch the monorail back to Westlake center and head back down Pine St. towards Pikes Place Market. This time we are tasting incredible produce, eating the largest and freshest shrimp cocktail and tuna poke I have ever had and buying flowers. Oh the flowers…so dreamy! Flower bouquets range from only $5-$15 depending on the size. You can’t beat that price and the flowers are always fresh and beautiful. I’ve been to the market on numerous occasions and I know that I haven’t seen half of what there is to see. From the original Starbucks, to pastries from Piroshky, to handmade doughnut stands, Cheese at Beechers Handmade Cheese and the Athenian restaurant, made famous from the movie Sleepless in Seattle. You just can’t do it all in one day.

After eating everything in sight we make our way back down to the waterfront. But on the way back to the water taxi we make one last stop …for oysters! Pier 56 houses Elliott’s Oyster House which has a great happy hour but the wait can be a little long. A great alternative is the more casual complement to Elliot’s which is right next door – Cafe 56. Oysters, steamed mussels and champagne is quickly ordered and happily consumed. We then catch the water taxi back to West Seattle and take in the sweeping views once more of downtown and Elliot Bay.

LASTLY…
One last activity that I highly recommend is kayaking in Elliot Bay and the Puget Sound. Alki Kayak Tours is located right next to the water taxi dock. You can go with a tour or adventure off by yourself. For more information check out their website: www.kayakalki.com. You can’t beat the views and depending on the time of year you might even encounter some Harbor Seals! This is also a perfect way to experience a wonderful Seattle sunset.

I hope you enjoyed my version of the perfect first day in Seattle. I love this city so much and look forward to calling it my home for a very long time. I hope you will consider Seattle and the Pacific Northwest for your next family vacation. You won’t regret it!

Pinckney, Michigan Wedding from Amanda Dumouchelle + Take a Seat

When I was a little girl I wanted a gold room, but when my mom said no, I settled for mint. Not much has changed in the past 20 years or so… mint and gold is the color combo that still totally owns my heart. So when Take a Seat sent this inspiration shoot (shot in my home state, no less!) featuring my colors, I was totally smitten. Especially after laying eyes on that floral crown from Passionflower. Amanda Dumouchelle Photography has put together a gallery that fulfills all my girlhood fantasies. Care to join me?

From the designer… The private residence in Pinckney, Michigan selected for the shoot is a special location for us here at Take A Seat Events. The rustic villa-like exteriors of the beautiful home, coupled with the breathtaking lakefront setting is what inspired our vision for this contrasting “shabby chic meets elegant” theme.

As we began brainstorming details for this inspiration shoot, we came across the incredible ivory and gold chevron sequin linen, which became the focal point on which we based the rest of the event design on. The mint accents pulled together the two different styles of rust and elegance for a soft, summer look whilst the romantic invitations along with the raw simplicity of the chalkboard signs perfectly complimented our overall concept.

We recruited an incredibly talented group of vendors that completely blew us away by bringing our vision to life. All of the little details, from the delicate, meadow-like flowers, to the one-of-a-kind vintage rentals and the ombre wedding cake, were truly works of love and creative passion from everyone involved. Our amazing photographer, Amanda Dumouchelle, was able to capture all of these lush details as well as the chemistry of our good friends, Jim & Carrie Aulette, who will be celebrating their five year wedding anniversary this upcoming October.

As an event planning company who believes in creating bespoke events that illuminate a true labor of love, we feel that this “shabby chic meets elegant” inspiration shoot could not have been more successful in exemplifying what we stand for and who we are. A special thank you to all of the participating vendors for helping us make this possible!

Romantic Inspiration From AJ Photography + Always Alexandra’s Weddings & Events

You could say that I am a little bit of a romance junkie.  One that never, ever tires of soft, lush florals, lace anything and honest to goodness true love.  So this inspiration shoot from the talented team of  AJ Photography and Always Alexandra’s Weddings and Events? It’s basically my dream come true with a fairytale gown from The Frock Pot, rustic-inspired details and a breathtaking Dawnville Farms setting that is all kinds of wonderful.  See it all right here.

From AJ PhotographyI have always truly loved the simple beauty in the country. The rolling fields, old fences and amazing trees, I wanted to showcase the soft romantic side of it all. Nothing makes it more complete than a beautiful bride and her horse, hanging lanterns from extended branches and a intimate dining setting within it all.

I wanted to take that simple country setting and amplify it with true elegance and romance showing how you can create this beautiful wedding. Each detail from the burlap bags with old wooden crates and sign to the cowboy boots bring true country. Add in the romantic elegant table setting and cake and you have an amazing intimate country romance.

I teamed up with Alexandra from Always Alexandra’s Weddings and Events and showed her a table setting I was in love with, the picnic table and lanterns were a must. From there her creativity took flight. Together Mikki from The Frock Pot and I hunted down the wedding dress to match it all, once we saw the blue ribbon the color base was set. Together with some incredible vendors we were able to make this all happen.

From Always Alexandra’s Weddings and EventsThe country is such a elegant and romantic dining setting, two thing I love. Once we decided the stylized shoot would be at a farm, I designed this table that combines it all. The oil lamp, the wild flowers in different shaped vases and the burlap bags that AJ Photography found, gave the table a country feel where as the satin runner, napkins and sashes as well as all the fine glassware, candles and place cards add the elegant part to the table.

I purchased many of the items used at thrift stores, antique stores and home sense. I made the lace table cloth and I used a variety of white pillows from home unifying the theme with the periwinkle sashes. The cake table is an extension of the country elegance by combining a beautiful elegant cake made by Cakes with Attitude placed on a lace table cloth accented by sticks and wild flowers bringing out that romantic feel.

Black + Gold Inspired Photo Shoot from Khaki Bedford Photography + Jonica Moore

You may have noticed we’re a teensy bit obsessed with gold around these parts. But can you blame us? It’s the one metallic that adds an instant glam factor wherever it’s used. So when Khaki Bedford PhotographyJonica MooreNaturally DeliciousLion in the Sun and a whole crew of creatives teamed up for a shoot based on black and gold, we were basically in heaven. Kick back and join us for this serious dose of swoonage right over here.

From Khaki Bedford PhotographyOur inspiration for this shoot came from the wallpaper at the most amazing new event space in Brooklyn – 501 Union (owners of The Green Building).  We loved the black and metallic wallpaper throughout, so we worked around that with a gold and black theme, mixing modern prints with vintage pieces.  We had an amazing list of local Brooklyn vendors who teamed up with us.

A Cherry Blossom Family Session from Lindsay Madden + Get the Look!

I know, I know, cherry blossom season is a little behind us now but I’m just not quite ready to say goodbye. I love fall in all of its crisp and cool glory, but these flowering beauties will forever trump any and all falling leaves that happen to be in our future. Plus, this stylish family clearly know what’s up and what kind of person would I be if I denied you a peek at that incredible mint maxi or those teeny gold moccasins? Lindsay Madden has obviously done it again and you may want to spend some time in the gallery to see the whole shebang.

And if you know us at all you know we can’t resist a solid get the look (especially when it’s this cute!)

From Lindsay… I am so excited to share this sweet cherry blossom filled family session I captured at the very start of spring in Central Park. Cherry blossoms in the park always signify that warmer weather is right around the corner & quite honestly, they always add a little something extra to my photographs. The beautiful pink & white blooms are the perfect accessory to an already stylish family!
