Cornish Cliff Top Wedding from Marianne Taylor Photography

If I’m being honest, I’m a bit of an anglophile. Which means pretty much anything from across the pond grabs my attention. But anything Marianne Taylor Photography sends to me pushes me over the edge. I’m completely obsessed with her gorgeous images, and when she is brought on to capture a wedding like this (I’m having a hard time not inserting twenty exclamation points) I can’t help myself but to put up an out of office and spend a few moments alone with the gallery.

From the gorgeous bride… Tom and I met at our friends wedding two years ago. We had both been friends with the couple for over eight years so it was surprising that we’d not met before. We hit it off immediately and although we lived three hours away from one another, we spent the next six months commuting every weekend so we could be together. It didn’t take long for me to up roots and move down to Cornwall so we could be together permanently and three months later Tom popped the question on my birthday by the beach.

We got engaged 13 months before our wedding, and our immediate thoughts were that we wanted an outdoor humanist wedding. In England this can be tricky, especially in May but we decided to go for it by having a small marquee in our garden. Thank god we did! The sun was out but it was rather windy…so the tent was perfect. The ceremony was perfect too with the whole congregation crying throughout our personnel vows. It was incredibly heartfelt but lots of fun too. We sang ‘I’m a Believer’ by The Monkees and ‘Get by with a little help from My Friends’ by the Beatles. Everyone sang up and the ceremony was exactly as we dreamt it would be. We were blown away and grinning from ear to ear.

Our friends, family and bridal party were amazing throughout the whole weekend. Their support towards preparing for the day was unbelievable and to have such a dedicated team, so happy to help actually brought me to tears. Their love and support was so appreciated. We really wanted to inject our own personality into our day and as my husband is an amazing carpenter, he decided to hand-make our bar and coffee tables, the table centre blocks and cake stand. His help and enthusiasm towards the day made all my dreams possible. I loved my grandmother deeply, so to have her presence at our wedding was very important to me. We decided to paint the vintage furniture she’d left me in her will, and we placed the pieces within the marquee. Having her handmade tapestry stool sitting there made my day.

My dress was so enjoyable and I’d spent months looking forward to wearing it. I felt it was very ‘me’ but perfect for an English sea-side wedding too. Tom looked so adorable and I’m pleased we spent the time to ensure he felt so comfortable in his attire. As a film editor, jeans and t-shirts are his everyday look, so to see him so dressed up was amazing. I’m also very proud that our family went all out with their hats! We’re British, so hats are a must! I was truly proud of their parade on our behalf.

Lastly, the fly-by which was arranged as a complete surprise blew us away. We were in total shock but it was truly amazing and it was the icing on the cake. We loved every second of our day and we’re just so grateful to have had Marianne as our photographer too. It was very important to us that our photos captured our day as we felt it inside and as we wanted to remember it. Marianne’s style suited us perfectly, and they will be a lifelong memory of the magic and excitement we both felt on the day.

Orlando Engagement Session from Kelian Photography

Two things: I now need a zebra umbrella before my life can feel complete and a copy of I Married Adventure with that signature zebra cover. It’s a zebra thing and a way too cute to pass up thing. And this Orlando engagement shot by Kelian Photography has all of that plus a really sweet couple. This twosome clearly shares my love for those black and white striped animals and a love for each other which shines bright in every single one of these images. Have a look here for more.

Ombre Inspired Dinner Parties from Amanda Allen + 3 DIYS!

There are many trends that exist out there that I’d be happy to see disappear  but I have to admit, ombre is not one of them. And lucky for me, this particular effect seems to be here to stay. It’s a simple aesthetic that holds huge impact and can be used in a multitude of different facets. One look at Amanda Allen’s approach to two ombre-inspired dinner parties and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Captured by Jason Mize, there’s a whole gallery filled with these pretty purple parties right here.

From Amanda… Our inspiration behind this shoot was to create two dinner party looks that are simple enough to DIY. The idea was to create a vision for modern- at home entertainers. Life has so much to celebrate and sometimes it’s nice to go all for friends and family. Ombre seems to be the go-to this season so we decided to use it as inspiration behind two dinner party themes. The two different styles show just how versatile ombre is as a design element. Lilac is in tune with this summer’s pastels, so we loved the idea of incorporating it dark to light. The best aspect of this dinner party theme is that it’s easily changed to create a fresh new look each and every time.

And you’re probably looking for the DIY’s that pair with these two adorable looks, aren’t ya? We’ve got you covered!

Materials

Florals in at least three different shades of the same color (we used 10 stems of each!)
Oasis foam
Mirrored vase containers (we got ours at Jamali Garden)
Three wooden dowels, 18″ long
Gold craft wire
White feathers
Gold spray paint

directions

step-1Soak the oasis in water and cut to fit the containers that you’ve found.

step-2Cut your chosen flowers and gently insert them into the oasis so that they sit low in the vase. Don’t use any of the greenery and be sure not to leave any gaps.

step-3Spray paint the dowels using the gold spray paint and let dry.

step-4Spray paint just the tip of 6 feathers gold and let dry.

step-5 Sink the dowels into the oasis foam using equal spacing in between each and string the golden wire across all three. Continue to string the feathers along the “clothesline” using the gold wire. Tip: make sure that dowels are long enough that the feathers are not obscuring your guests view.

Materials
Cotton paper stock
Water
Dye

directions
step-1 To achieve this look, print your menus out on cotton paper stock.

step-2Next, dip the bottom portion of the menu into water making sure it’s very saturdated. Then dip it into the dye for about 10 seconds.

step-3 I Move the card around slowly to encourage the dye to creep up the card. If the dye starts to get uneven, gently wipe it with a paper towel.

step-4Let it dry for a few moments, and then dip just the bottom portion once more to achieve the ombre look.

step-5
Line your dipped cards on newspaper or paper towels until dry!

Materials
1 pack of Tulip dye in Purple
Salt
5 Gallon bucket
Wooden Spoon
Rubber gloves
Dishwashing soap
Tia from MMD events gives her input on her ombre dyeing adventure:

directions
step-1 In order to prepare the dye, heat water and bring it to about 140 degrees. I found the best method was to use a coffee pot in order to ensure the water came to a steam. Make sure the coffee pot is rinsed thoroughly before hand. Who knew a coffee pot could pull a stunt double?

step-2 While wearing rubber gloves, mix a gallon of hot water (about two and a half coffee pots) with 4 tablespoons of salt and the Tulip dye. Use the wooden spoon to mix until dissolved.

step-3 After the dye is completely smooth, add in a dash of dishwashing soap to help the dye penetrate the fabric. There’s something about purple and its regale nobility that everyone secretly adores. As a note, we recommend using cotton, rayon, linen, silk or nylon. These fabrics work best when dyeing.

step-4 Fold the fabric so that the ends that you want ombre’d are at the bottom. Fold in half and then fold twice more hotdog style so it is the appropriate length and size for your dipping bucket.

step-5 After fabric is folded, douse the entire fabric with warm water and begin the dye process. Keep in mind that once the dye is rinsed out, the colors will become lighter.

step-6 We will admit, this is quite a lengthy dying process so put on some JT (Justin Timberlake) and have fun with it! First begin to dip the bottom section of the fabric in the dye for approximately 10 minutes back and forth while moving in up and down direction. We aimed for a lush royal purple, the darkest of the three shades.

step-7  Move on to dipping the middle section for about 7 minutes, until it is the correct shade desired. In this stage, continue to do the same motions so there is a contrast from darker to lighter. We went from royal to lavender! Love these graceful purple hues.

step-8 The third stage, we dipped for 5 minutes. A perfect shade of Lilac is born. Finally! The moment we’ve been waiting for.

step-9 Once you are happy with the colors, dip the entire piece of fabric for about a minute in the dye one last time. Wring out excess dye and run fabric under cold water from top to bottom and proceed to rinse with warm water until the water runs clear.

step-10
We recommend hanging the fabric to dry on a clothes line or in the shower. And voila! The ombre process is complete and your majestic dinner party awaits.

Rancho Las Lomas Wedding Inspiration from ArinaB Photography + Istoria Events

It’s inspiration shoots like this one from Istoria Events that literally have me begging you, my dear reader, to take note. Find the little bit (okay, or all of it) of this shoot that speaks to you and recreate it on your own day. And please, please don’t forget to invite me. ArinaB Photography has filled our gallery with SO much gorgeous, and it’s all right here!

From Istoria EventsLove is fun and vibrant and that’s exactly what we wanted to embrace with this photo shoot filled with dynamic colors. These days there’s so much pressure on brides and high stress on formality that the beauty of simplicity is missed. This inspired us to capture the fun of Love. Every aspect of this photo shoot depicts this charm from the uniqueness of the chairs to the distinctiveness of the table settings all tied together with vibrant colors and natural beauty.

Rancho Los Lomas gave us the perfect foundation with the rustic stairway framing the natural beauty of the ceremony location. The Backdrop complimented the natural surrounding giving it an elegant focal point, softened with sheer material that hung so flawlessly among the trees. Breaking the diversity of all natural surrounding we used different shades of chairs representing the couples fun loving nature.

Proving that no touch is too small we complimented the natural pathway with a unique seating chart of rustic ladders and hanging mason jars that lit the way to the reception in a fun way that let the guests ‘take a light to their destination’.

The culmination of the theme is beautifully depicted in the reception. A table filled with vibrant colors throughout complimented by a pastel blue runner combines fun with elegance. I always love adding diverse details in a space such as the crystal chandeliers in a natural surrounding giving this tablescape a formal feel in a minimal way. A pop of summer colors filled the table with garden roses, peonies, ranunculus, and lilacs in a black urn to balance the pop of colors with sophistication.

Keeping away from the traditional suits we chose a casual look for the groom, khaki pants and a dress shirt gave this groom the perfect look.

A beautiful gown from Laveda Bridal provided the perfect look. The Bride always has to look elegant and the gown did her justice from the detail in the bodice to the easy flow of the train. We went with a neutral palette for makeup and soft curls complimenting the natural feel. The bridesmaids whimsical look consist of two separate pieces made into one look, proving that you can go out of the box of a traditional dress.

Ocho Rios provided the perfect wedding cake and exquisite desserts displayed on the vintage table from LONDYNRoads. We wanted to keep a soft palette of peach throughout the dessert table with mini tart, cheese cake, and mango mouse cups displayed on a variety of stands from rustic to crystal glass. The cake is so flawless and by adding little details of jasmine and garden roses was the perfect touch.

From the Bride… We were engaged in April 2011 on a snowy mountain top in Hamner Springs, New Zealand. The year before we had visited the beautiful Daydream Island for a long weekend and fell in love with the stunning chapel. We both knew it was the perfect place for us to get married. We loved the idea of bringing our family and friends to a tropical island to celebrate with us! The wedding day was relaxed and full of delicious food and cocktails. We were married in the endeavor chapel followed by canapes and cocktails down by the ocean. The reception was held at the stunningSsunlover’s Terrace, a beautiful open balcony on the top floor of the resort. We danced the night away with our close family and friends while admiring the stunning view of The Whitsundays!

Chicago Engagement Session by Katherine Salvatori Photography

I can’t help the big grin on my face when I see the way these two look at each other. The crinkled noses, twinkling eyes, pearly whites… it’s the whole nine yards of pure love folks. And I’m betting Katherine Salvatori had an even bigger grin the day she was snapping up the love between these two!

From KatherineDana and Eric are getting married next summer in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and wanted to celebrate their engagement and love of the city with an engagement session on the grounds of the Art Institute. It was such a classy and elegant setting to match their personalities. My favorite part of the session was seeing how in love they are, stealing kisses between shots and hugging each other when they thought I wasn’t looking. It was such a pleasure getting to document the two of them together, and I can’t wait for their wedding next summer!

Rustic Chic Winnipeg Wedding Styled Shoot by Tina Wiebe Photography

The prettiness sitting in this post can all be attributed to the gorgeous vision from the talented Tina Wiebe. Thanks to her, we get to soak up some seriously lovely rustic inspiration this Friday morning, and really, is there a better way to spend the end of the work week? It picture after picture of pure pretty, and it’s all waiting for you right here.

From Tina WiebeA couple of weeks ago I organized, styled and shot my first styled wedding shoot. Being new it is hard to get anybody to help you out with a project like this. But I wanted to try it and not let anyone tell me I couldn’t do it. My friend Linda and her husband Tyronne were my gorgeous models! They were an absolute dream to work with! And they have been married since December of 2012. Some of the small details were made by my own hands. Such as the table number, the burlap table runner, the wine bottle flower vases, the round wood pieces, and the succulents are from my mothers garden. The table which is a door and the whiskey barrels are a friends. The cupcakes were provided by Roseanne Wiebe.

I just adore southern weddings but up north I don’t get to experience them very much so I loved the idea of creating my very own kind of southern wedding. The location I chose is actually a secret that I have kept and not very many people know about it. I found it in a small little village about an hour away from the city, it was quiet and breathtaking. It has long grass and fallen trees, and a small little creek, there is even a little wood shelter that some boys must have made.

Texas Hill Country Wedding from Christine Sargolog Photography

This Hill Country wedding makes me happy — plain and simple. From the glowing bride to the gorgeous pops of color, it’s like a recipe for a pretty with a sense of homey intimacy woven in along the way. Christine Sargologos Photography captured every  sweet moment to perfection, and you can find it all sitting right here.

From Christine... I could photograph weddings like this every weekend. When I met Kari & Chris they told me they were planning a celebration that would be intimate, fun and authentic. Though they live in Dallas they chose to marry just outside San Antonio at a beautiful family estate near Canyon Lake. Cara Salom, a friend, officiated.

The rambling ranch-style home was designed for entertaining. It has plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces to lounge and its modern glass and metal facade sits high in the Texas Hill Country. Perfect for a summer party. With only 50 guests, a mix of family and close friends, Kari focused on a few essentials: delicious food, incredible flowers and the perfect gown. I loved that their entire color inspiration came from Chris’ tie, and that Kari potted all of the succulent centerpieces with her girlfriends. Lending to the relaxed and cheerful mood, Kari & Chris opted for a standing ceremony (complete with their Black Lab, Chole) and one long, shared dinner table for guests. As dinner ended and the sun went down they shared a first dance and some cheesecake. Everyone danced, drank wine, wrote well wishes to the couple and ended the night under the big Texas sky. It was perfect.

Naxos Greece Destination Wedding from Adonis Kekidakis Photography

This wedding is exactly why I adore destination weddings. A stunning location, gorgeous light, a party that lasts until the wee hours of the morning – it’s just the recipe for my version of the perfect day. It doesn’t hurt that this couple looks like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine or that the Greece vistas are breathtaking to say the least, but it’s the smiles captured by Adonis Kekidakis that really get me, and you can see them all right here.

From the Bride… We were introduced through a couple of mutual friends when I first moved to New York City, what we didn’t know was Themis and I had both studied at UCLA years ago but never met. Themis is an architect from Athens and I grew up in Taiwan now work in Finance. When we first started dating, Themis said, ‘I have to take you to my Greek island – Naxos’. And then, with all seriousness, he continued, ‘there is one tradition I would never break, that is spending every summer in Naxos, no matter where I live’.

Of course, when I first arrived on the island. I fell in love. From the sun bleached villages sprayed across rolling hills, the pale stoned Venetian castle, to the soft sandy beaches embraced by warm waves of turquoise Aegean water. Every corner I turn, I gasped for the rustic beauty. It is truly a place where all myths came true.

So when Themis proposed four years later on the streets of Paris during New Year’s Eve, we decided there was no other place better than Naxos to have our wedding. It would be the perfect excuse to introduce everyone we love to this mythical place.

We were married at Agios Nicolaos Church and chose our favorite beach bar that we go every year as the reception venue– Banana Restaurant & Bar. It’s built right on the beach, you can hear the soft waves hitting the shores while dipping your toes in the warm sand. We were mindful of the style of the island, so we kept the rest of the decor at a minimum. What made our planning easy, was the fact that the bar already had a cool and elegant island vibe. However, one thing we insisted on having was sparklers for everyone, just because who doesn’t like sparklers!!

The party went exactly as planned, it was full on Greek style. Everyone, that is 170 of our guests, danced until 4 am. Not to say 75 of them joined us from across the globe. And rumor has it, several went skinny dipping in the ocean at the end of the night.

DIY Vintage Glamour Wedding from Julie Anne, Wedding Photographer

Old Hollywood meets the south, and the result? Perfection. With a little bit of spunk and a whole lot of sweet southern charm, the combo makes for a party that people are probably still talking about. It doesn’t hurt that the new Mr. & Mrs. are head over heels in love with each other, which just might be the most fabulous detail of all. See all the pretty captured by Julie Anne, Wedding Photographer right here.

From Julie AnnePaige and Kevin had a beautiful March winter wedding inspired by Paige’s love for Old Hollywood. Their venue of choice is a historic antebellum plantation in Ackworth, Georgia – The Cedar Plantation. Their wedding had a beautiful mix of vintage glitz and glamour – especially with Paige’s vintage jewelry and red lipstick! Paige chose deep purple for her main wedding color so she could wear her grandmother’s vintage jewelry for her something old. Paige included lots of DIY touches throughout the day! Her mom and bridesmaids helped create all the centerpieces, bouquets and boutonnieres. I love how they used anemones! Paige’s mother also made her veil. My favorite part of the whole day was their “First Touch” in the Cedar Plantation Garden. I also loved the two ring bearers! How cute are those two little guys in tuxes? After their rocking reception came to an end, Paige changed into a short lace gown for their bubble exit. It was a great conclusion to a fabulous wedding.

Topsfield Wedding at Willowdale Estate from Shane Godfrey Photography

While a lot of the SMP ladies’ roots are planted firmly in New England soil, mine are not, meaning weddings like this, filled with beautiful Massachusetts foliage, are my only shot at the gorgeous colors. They are so good for my soul. Love, laughter, and a beautiful fall wedding captured by Shane Godfrey Photography are my kryptonite.

From Shane GodfreyBob and Virginia’s wedding at the Willowdale Estate in Topsfield was during the late fall which meant that we were going to get some great foliage pictures. Here in New England, it’s the most beautiful time of the year. The ceremony was at Our Lady of Grace Church in Everett, Massachusetts. They went from the church to the reception site in an amazing Rolls Royce followed by photos in the courtyard and hiking trails at the Willowdale Estate. We didn’t have to walk far to find the kind of setting we were looking for, foliage! The reception was beautifully decorated with signature table numbers, key’s for table cards, and pumpkins on all the tables(a Halloween season inspired idea). Cinnamon Margaritas were their signature drinks! [dotted] Ceremony Venue: Our Lady of Grace | Reception Venue: Willowdale Estate | Photographer: Shane Godfrey Photography | Officiant: Fr. New York City Wedding by Genevieve Nisly Photography

I’ve been in a New York state of mind lately, so this elopement from Genevieve Nisly Photography is calling, nay yelling, my name. The photographs are beautifully simple: telling the story of the lovebirds and their city on the most romantic day of their lives. Can you hear me swooning?

From the beautiful bride… Eloping is AWESOME! It is still just as meaningful without the stress. We wanted the wedding to be about us and getting married. We wanted to do something that felt different than what we normally see.(Since we are wedding photographers ourselves.) The day did not feel over-planned, rather lighthearted and fun!

There were many favorite parts of the day. I spent the morning by myself. Some people may find this depressing, but it was a great opportunity to reflect. I loved riding the train by myself. (first time!) Jarred and I got dressed together. It was refreshing to ignore regular traditions. I was surprised with a broach bouquet from HeatherLily Floral. We loved having James and Genevieve at our wedding. It meant a lot to us to have them there and going along with our last minute plans. They were our photographers, wedding party, and witnesses! I cried when Alice (officiant) read the letter Jarred wrote to me. This was definitely unexpected. Having a private ceremony allowed real emotions to show. The rest of the day was loosely planned. We roamed New York City, fed each other cupcakes, and listened to street music on the train.

I think other couples should plan a wedding that makes them happy. Choose wedding pros that make you feel comfortable. Photographs are so important. They really are one of the few physical items left over from the wedding.

Cape Cod Wedding from Trent Bailey Photography + Desiree Spinner Events

I’ve been told it’s a crime to live in New England and have never visited Cape Cod. And after poring through this nautical beauty from Trent Bailey, I fully understand why. Because when vendors like Desiree SpinnerSayles Livingston and Laura Hooper add their touch to an already stunning locale, it’s MORE than enough reason for me to make a trip there, stat! Don’t call the East Coast home? No problem. Grab that coffee and experience all of the Cape’s magic for yourself right over here.

From Desiree SpinnerStacy and Steven wanted an elegant (but not stuffy) Cape Cod wedding for their family and out of town guests to be dazzled. Incorporating navy and tiffany blue with a hint of silver was important to Stacy to give an understated nautical/East Coast prep feel to match the gorgeous Chatham location. Chatham Bars Inn was the perfect spot for this amazing couple because they could have their ceremony in the sand, a casual cocktail hour in the boat house and then a sit down dinner in the Beach House Grille.  But most importantly the guests, from all parts of the country and in Stacy and Stevens walk of life, could stay in one place and really get to know each other before the wedding.

For the reception we made use of some of the Beach House’s decor of old ship replica’s and onion lanterns but brought in some silver lanterns for the cocktail tables.  For the table setting Sayles paired some traditional Cape Cod style white hydrangeas with some delicate orchids down the middle of the long dinner table that we dressed with custom pintucked organdy linens over a linen and cotton mix. We also paired silver chiavari chairs with silver chargers with a navy cotton hemstitched napkin and a Tiffany blue ribbon.  To bring in some seaside we placed the table numbers in custom made sailors knots and placed hurricane candles around the tables.  Outside the Beach House Grille is a great deck overlooking the ocean which is great for dancing, and so we had a clear top tent placed there so guests could see both the ocean and the stars in the sky once it got dark. This wedding brought old Cape Cod to life to many out of towners!

West Village, New York City Engagement from Veronica Lola Photography

Home is where the heart is, right? So, why not do your e-sesh right in your own home and neighborhood like these two sweethearts captured by Veronica Lola Photography. To look back and remember where some of your favorite first memories were made… it doesn’t get better than that! See it all here.

From VeronicaI’m excited to share a beautiful couple, managing a long distance love (Montreal-NYC) while planning a wedding in Tuscany. Can you say dreamy love story? They wanted me to photograph them on their couch, in the comfort of their soho living room, which was a first for me, but was ecstatic at the opportunity. Stuart, a south african native, also introduced me to the best chocolate chip cookie place in all of New York. Lets just say, I loved these two. I can only imagine how beautiful their Tuscan wedding will be next summer (Which I will be shooting, did I mention?! Yeeee!)

It adds the perfect pop of wow to this seriously stunning day, and compliments the traditional yet preppy party in an oh-so fashionable way. This is a wedding where every detail should be adored, and you can do just that right here.

From Vitalic PhotographyKara & Stephen’s Johns Island wedding was classic, preppy and the perfect amount of a laid back Florida vibe. Their reception decor was colorful, the centerpiece trees pleasantly unexpected and the striped table linens from La Tavola added a unique touch to the look. Kara’s Priscilla of Boston dress fit her chic style perfectly, and her J. Crew accessories were bold yet understated. Kara also put her own personal DIY touches on their invitations and printed pieces.

From the Bride… Stephen and I had two engagements, really. A couple years before the official engagement, Stephen had asked me to marry him, but we decided to keep it between us because Stephen’s younger brother was getting married later that year and we didn’t want to step on any toes. After that wedding, there was an illness in the family, and again we put our plans on hold. Finally, the last day of August, 2011, Stephen proposed on bended knee while we visited my dad’s grave on a trip to California. It might seem like an odd choice to some, but my dad was my best friend, and it was Stephen’s way of ensuring that even though he was gone he was still a part of our special moment. We initially planned for an October 2012 wedding, but sometimes life has a way of making other plans…

Fast forward a couple months, and after a trip to the doctor for what I thought was my thyroid, I found out I was pregnant! The baby was definitely not planned, but was so welcome and loved from second number one. It was important to Stephen that I be able to enjoy the wedding festivities (and lose the 70 pounds of baby weight I added to my normally fit frame), so we decided to postpone the wedding until the following April 2013. Avery Jane Todd was born on July 11, 2012. She was a big girl (8 lb, 6 oz, and 21 inches) and just the sweetest and most wonderful little baby.

Wedding Planning: I can’t say that I recommend planning a wedding during pregnancy (while you are trying to decorate a nursery and purchase baby gear and take baby/pregnancy classes) and while raising a newborn and then infant (are there ever enough hours in the day to fit in all the eating, naps, diaper changes, baths, walks, tummy time, pediatrician visits, and classes and still find time to eat and sleep yourself), but you do what you can with what you are given – and I will say it really forces you to make decisions much more quickly. Despite having all that lead time before the wedding, the day approached pretty quickly, and before we knew it our daughter, Avery, was 9 months old and we were flying to Florida for the wedding!

Location: I’m an only child, and while my heart and roots are in the Bay Area (yeah, NorCal!) we didn’t feel it was practical to make the majority of our guests, who reside in the Midwest, trek all the way out to California. We wanted to do a destination wedding, in order to try to keep it small (small is a relative term) and give Stephen a beach in April, but again, wanted to give people an option that was close enough to travel to within a couple hours and also a place that wouldn’t break the bank. Ultimately we picked John’s Island, as it has special significance to Stephen, and his family (and to me and our little family as well!). Stephen’s grandparents were one of the first people to buy a home in John’s Island, and because he and Stephen’s grandmother retired there, Stephen and his family made multiple trips there every year to visit. Eventually Stephen’s parents ended up buying there as well, so we have been going to John’s Island about twice a year since we started dating to go and visit them. We had initially hoped that Stephen’s grandfather, who was 99 when we got engaged, would be able to attend, but unfortunately he passed away a couple months later. But both he and Stephen’s grandmother were there in spirit.

Weekend Events: John’s Island is truly a magical and lovely place – it’s got such a wonderful Florida feel, a little more buttoned up and preppy than Miami, but a little more relaxed than Palm Beach. When planning the wedding weekend, we decided that if people were going to take the time to fly down to Florida to be there for our big day, we wanted to make sure it was worth their while! Stephen’s aunts and uncles were kind enough to offer to host a Thursday night welcome dinner in a neighboring town called Sebastian, at a restaurant called Capt. Hiram’s Resort. It’s as kitschy as it sounds, but abounds with charm and fun – it’s very Florida Keys, and if you are a Parrot Head you would feel right at home there. The evening was very low key and it was such a great opportunity for people to meet and begin to unwind.

On Friday the rehearsal dinner took place at the West Course Clubhouse. John’s Island is such a truly lovely place – there are so many gorgeous venues you just can’t go wrong. We wanted to try to incorporate as many venues as we could, so it made sense that we would have the rehearsal dinner at the West Course. The evening was such a blast – Nicki from Vitalic Photo came out and photographed the guests, and also took a huge Todd/Brown family photo (the great thing about Stephen’s family is that it is hard to tell where his mom’s side, the Browns, ends and his dad’s side, the Todds, begins). After a fantastic dinner, and a run of speeches (I think nearly every member of the wedding party spoke with the exception of the Best Man, Maid of Honor, and 2 other attendants who made speeches at the wedding), we cut into the groom’s cake – Stephen’s favorite, red velvet, decorated like a sheet of Michigan hockey ice (his family are die-hard U of M fans, and Stephen plays hockey, so….) and topped with a groom in a tux with hockey skates and stick, and the bride cheering him on with a megaphone and foam finger. While I was an athlete (water polo) and not a cheerleader, I may have missed my calling – so the cake toppers were perfect! The end of the evening ended at Rafters, the bar at the Beach Club (where it ends every night we are at John’s Island). I went home to try to get some sleep, while Stephen stayed to try to catch up with family and friends.

Wedding Day: Saturday morning came and everything seemed to move so quickly! First thing in the morning we got mani/pedis, then headed back to our rented house to get ready. The hairstylists and make up artist set up shop and I was amazed at how efficient they were! Everyone was so sweet and helpful with one another, and took turns watching Avery and my friend’s twins, our gorgeous flower girl and darling ring bearer. By the time Nicki and Chrissy showed up we were just about ready to go! Putting on my dress was such a magical moment – I had dreamed about doing that ever since I was a little girl. And the dress turned out exactly the way I had hoped – it was a Priscilla of Boston style that I altered by shortening the train and adding a peplum waist and sweetheart neckline. I’m always altering clothes and putting my own spin on things, so I figured my wedding dress would be no different. My sandals, so appropriate for a California girl, were Tory Burch. I think a lot of people were surprised not to see me in heels (I love stilettos and I love being taller than my already tall 5’9″) but I think those who really know me understand that while I love fashion, I also like to be comfortable. The sandals were a perfect marriage of style and comfort. The jewelry I sourced from one of my favorites, J. Crew, although the earrings were Kate Spade. My something old was my grandmother’s brooch – she had passed away a few months prior to the wedding and my aunt very thoughtfully gifted it to me just for the wedding. My something new was nearly everything I wore, my something borrowed was one of my bridesmaid’s wedding band (for luck, she said!) and my blue was my engagement ring – the cushion-cut sapphire that took me over a year to pick out.

We arrived at the Beach Club to take photographs, and to do the first look. I thought I would be nervous, but I was just so excited – I love Stephen in a suit, and he looked so fantastic, better than I could have imagined. It was an incredible moment – and one I will remember forever. I had been told numerous times by as many people that the most important thing was to relax and try to enjoy the day and live in the moment. And I think I did that. There were some pretty big snafus, but after stressing about details the entire week, I felt that the one day I would let things go would be my wedding day. Never mind that I had an inflamed eye, my original hair style was a disaster (but with a little help from my style guru cousins I was able to salvage something from the wreckage), Avery’s headband got left behind, we were running tight on time for pictures…I could go on and on. But it honestly didn’t matter. I just couldn’t wait to see Stephen and to “get the show on the road”, as my dad used to say!

After taking group photographs (in gusty winds, no less) we headed across the street to the golf clubhouse for the ceremony. While we had wanted to have the entire celebration outdoors, we knew that we would be contending with the unpredictable nature of Florida weather, so we decided to have our reception indoors, and our ceremony outdoors. Moving a ceremony is often much easier than moving the reception, and it was a good thing we had a back up plan because it rained off and on the morning of the wedding, and it was windy as well. Not ideal weather for an outdoor ceremony! The night before the wedding we decided to move the ceremony indoors, down the hall from the reception site, into one of the beautiful rooms in the Golf Clubhouse they use for meetings and luncheons. It seemed like it was meant to be – the decor of the room matched the girls’ dresses and our floral schematic perfectly, as if it had been planned that way all along! We propped the interior doors open so that we could hear the sounds of the fountain in the atrium beyond. I was told later by numerous guests that they were thankful the ceremony had been moved inside – it ended up being quite hot, muggy, and windy, and I think everyone found the temperature controlled room preferable to the Florida elements.

Ceremony: It’s hard to say which part of the ceremony I liked best – the bagpiper was a nod to Stephen’s Scottish heritage (Todd) and because both my dad and I love bagpipes. The officiant was Stephen’s cousin, Casey, who performed his duties with humor and aplomb, as he does just about everything in life – it meant the world to us that he became ordained just for our ceremony, but he did such a good job he was told by more than a few people that he might have found a new vocation! The flower girl and ring bearer (Isla and Jack) were too cute in their J. Crew outfits and were a hit, even though they were less than thrilled about walking down the aisle. But I think my favorite part was something that I couldn’t see at the time but that everyone told us about afterward: while Stephen and I exchanged our vows, Avery smiled and beamed at us the entire time, almost as if she knew what was going on and couldn’t be happier that her parents were (finally!) tying the knot! Looking back at the photographs I could see what they were talking about!

Reception: The string quartet from the ceremony played contemporary hits during the cocktail hour and I have to say I was beyond thrilled – I have always loved classical music, and love even more when contemporary songs are played on classical instruments. Apparently I wasn’t the only one, as they received many compliments from our guests.

Vitalic has a photo booth called The Snapbooth and it was a HUGE hit! People loved it and couldn’t get enough of it – my only regret is that we didn’t have it for the entire night…people would have been in there all night! But the props were hilarious, and their props coupled with a few I bought on Etsy made for some really hilarious and memorable pictures.

Linda and Monica from John’s Island took me aside a few moments before we escorted the guests into the ballroom for the dinner seating. My jaw literally dropped to the floor. Between the colors, and the lanterns and candlelight and flowers…it was all just so perfect.
After the food was served the dancing began in earnest. Stephen and I are pretty sure that we had never seen a wedding where that many people danced at the same time, and for that long. I don’t think the dance floor was ever empty! Our first dance was to Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am”. For some reason we have always gravitated toward that song, and love to sing it to each other. I think it suits us and acts as the perfect caption to our relationship – Stephen is definitely the yin to my yang.

The speeches were wonderful – my maid of honor, who we affectionately refer to as “Pissa” (her name is Lissa, but she can be a wicked pissah, so the name kind of stuck. Oops.), could barely choke her speech out. Which of course made both Stephen and I cry too! Stephen’s brothers (one is older, one is younger – yes, Stephen is the quintessential middle child) were co-best men, and their tag-team effort on their speech was hilarious…just enough roast to singe the edges a bit. And speaking of roasts, my oldest friend (since kindergarten!) Megan, did a little of her own, with the desired effect – roars and peals of laughter.

The only thing missing from the night was my dad – but I know he was there in a way. It was definitely a difficult moment walking down the aisle by myself, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way. If my dad wasn’t there physically to do it, then he was there with me in spirit, as he has been for the past 14 years. We picked our wedding day because it was 14 years to the day since he died. I wanted to make April 20th a day to celebrate and be happy, and so that is the last April 20th I will spend mourning his loss and instead will spend it celebrating the (official) start of my life with my new best friend. I know my dad would have loved Stephen and would have been proud.

Decor: I love to decorate. I love to entertain. Needless to say, this wedding was the perfect opportunity for me to showcase two of my favorite hobbies! Stephen is so laid back, he more or less let me run with my vision, his only request was a minimum of flowers. He doesn’t like cut flowers, never has – so it made me get creative, and I was actually really happy with the result.
Traditionally I am not a country-club-ballroom-wedding-reception kind of gal. That is not a knock on anyone who is, but that’s just not my style. Stephen and I like to stay at boutique hotels when we travel, as we like decor and ambiance that are a little outside-the-box, a little out of the ordinary, a hint different. The ballroom itself is decorated with lovely wall coverings and drapes, but they just didn’t jive with my initial vision of a neutral palette with clean lines, minimalist decor and an emphasis on fine linens and accent pieces of china and flatware. So instead of fighting the decor, I decided to change the vision completely, embrace the locale and my preppiness, and go with a Palm Beach Chic theme. Kelly green in the dominant color in the room, with hints of bright pink (the kind you would find in a Lilly Pulitzer print). Navy is my favorite spring/summer neutral, so that was the obvious choice to complement the kelly and pink.

I scoured LaTavola’s site for the perfect linens to offset the floral print drapes and geometric patterned floor covering. Cheshire Stripe table linens with a seersucker stripe napkin were the winners. LaTavola is simply the best – the linens arrived perfectly pressed and ready to go and exactly as pictured and promised. I love old Palm Beach and looked to Pinterest for images of Florida decor – I loved the lanterns I kept seeing, as well as bamboo details ( in everything from furniture to wallpaper), and rattan and white EVERYWHERE. In a word, it was fabulous. Jamali Garden in New York is such a great resource for decor, so I purchased all my candlesticks and the white ceramic vases and bowls from them. My lanterns I sourced from Home Decorators Collection and the darling elephant planters came from Z Gallerie. We rented rattan chargers and green goblets to offset the white chivari chairs and pink flowers. My favorite detail might have been the limes – Florida is known for citrus, and I adore decorating with fruit (so underrated!), so it was a no-brainer. We probably cleaned out 3 or 4 of the local Publix of their limes! The little trees were to add a bit of visual interest to the tables – I love the dramatic juxtaposition between tall elements (the trees) and low elements (the chargers). We also had trees placed around the room to bit a bring of the outside in, and with some strategically placed warm orange-hued uplighting, the overall effect was, I hope, very Florida indeed!

Staff: I really want to make sure everyone knows what a fantastic job the staff at John’s Island did for our wedding. The service was beyond impeccable – I mean, it always is, but sometimes when you do events on a large scale one of the first things to go is quality…quality of food and quality of service. Neither of these two elements was compromised in any way through the duration of the weekend and at every event we hosted at John’s Island: the rehearsal dinner, my bridal tea, and the wedding ceremony and reception.
Linda and Monica of John’s Island may have answered literally hundreds of emails and a myriad of questions about food, guest policies and accommodations, venue changes, etc. They did so in the most timely manner possible and with the utmost professionalism. They were on top of every detail of every event, but were extremely subtle in their approach – you could barely tell they were there except when they would come by to say hello or ask a brief question. We hit a snafu the day of the wedding but they and their staff stepped in and helped set everything up to my specifications.

The chef outdid himself – our tasting was impeccable, and Stephen’s concern was whether or not the chef would be able to replicate not only the look of our meal (beautifully sliced tenderloin atop a bed of spring vegetable farrotto) but the taste as well. He not only met our expectations, he exceeded them! The crab salad was nearly a full cup of crab meat resting atop a bed of greens, drizzled with a grapefruit olive oil emulsion and accent with avocado. My friends that usually don’t like seafood raved over the salad. Our dessert table was sumptuous and decadent to the extreme – I just wish we could have eaten off it for a week because it would have taken all of us (125 people) that long to get through it all. The macarons were on par with Laduree, and our wedding cake (traditional Swedish Princess Cake – my favorite) was custom created and about 2 feet bigger than we thought it would be. People raved about the food, and those who were fortunate enough to attend the “trifecta” (rehearsal, tea, and reception) all commented how amazed they were at the taste and presentation of the food.

Ojai Wedding from Michael + Anna Costa

If you’re looking for classic tented wedding inspiration, you are in the exact right spot.  And really, is there anything more romantic than a beautifully draped white tent? I think not. But the proof is in the pudding, a.k.a this wedding so perfectly captured by Michael + Anna Costa. Held at Ojai Valley Inn and Spa (also up there on the romantic and beautiful scale) it has tent inspiration galore plus the prettiest of pretty classic details coordinated by Hoste Events and you can see even more in the full gallery. Have a look right here.

From the groom…Our goal for the wedding was simple: a celebration of the start of the next chapter our already long relationship that reflected our personalities. Thanks to the help of many people, we achieved that goal and more.

We both share a love of all things California and wanted that to show throughout the weekend. This lead us to Ojai– a small eclectic town that is an easy drive north from L.A..  Kicking the weekend off with our closest family and friends under the twilight sky at the Spanish restaurant in town set the tone. Saturday morning I hosted a casual breakfast at a family friend’s house at the upper end of the valley. With spring in the air and the arrival of a heat wave, the smell of orange blossoms was everywhere, and what was supposed to be a quick event turned in to an extended morning of lawn games and lounging.

We picked the Ojai Valley Inn because it offered the best of all worlds. Our ceremony was held in the Herb Garden– a small but comfortable space filled with, no surprise, lots of herbs. An added benefit is that it is up above the sprawling lawn which gave our guests a full view of the reception tent below and the Oak Tree covered hills in the distance.

My favorite part of the evening was the tent. Or maybe the band. Or maybe the cake. Just like at the circus, the high peaks and good lighting inside the sailcloth tent made the party even more fun. The band was the result of the expert Google search “Los Angeles Soul Wedding Band” and after a few YouTube clip viewings, we booked them. They brought an entourage, which says it all. We both don’t like being rushed through cake, so we made sure there was enough time for everyone to sit and enjoy dessert before dancing began.

Mary’s favorite part of the evening were the flowers. Or maybe her dress. Or maybe the late night singalong in one of the hotel’s bars. The flowers were a mix of succulents, herbs, and garden roses. These blended naturally with the surrounding garden, which was in full bloom. Her dress was stunning and not at all what I expected her to wear (and I never saw it beforehand). The lace flowers and beautiful back of the dress leave me wondering if I’ll be able to convince her to put it on again some day. The night ended in the early morning with friends taking over the wood-paneled hotel bar, some reflecting on how lucky we all were to have been able to celebrate together and others singing along to a guitar.

Parker Palm Springs

A weekend at the Parker Palm Springs is the perfect way to check out of normal life and check into a life of glamour, sunshine and relaxation!  It’s been a longtime favorite of mine for it’s beautiful design (by none other than Jonathan Adler himself), stunning grounds and amazing spa.  Last weekend my husband, our two dogs and I spent a weekend there enjoying every last minute of it and, as photographers are wont to do, snapping photos all the while.   So happy to be sharing a bit from our stay below!

We stayed in one of the Parker’s amazing villas and once inside it was easy to forget that anything else in the world ever existed. Our villa had an impeccably decorated living room, bedroom, and patio. And with the two pups in tow it was especially nice to have all the space to spread out and settle in. It truly felt like our own little home for the weekend- a glamorous, cozy, and extra-fun home, of course. I’m officially obsessed with the white brick walls, colorful textiles and that hanging chair!

There are three places we preferred to practice our deep relaxation techniques at the Parker: poolside with cocktails, napping in hammocks tied between palm trees and of course, at the stately “PSYCH” spa.  Does it sound like I’m describing heaven?  I kind of am.  Specifically a heaven that also has a lemonade stand that will bring you drinks and snacks while you work on your tan and relaxation.  Yes, indeed!  To see more of this amazing property (including the bananas-amazing lobby) head on over to my blog, A House in the Hills.

New York City Wedding from Karen Hill Photography

There’s just something about Karen Hill Photography. Her images have that old New York charm. The feeling you get when the light is just right, and the air has just the perfect amount of crisp in it, and you can feel the happiness all around you. Which is why we adore weddings like this one… shot by Karen, and without question, perfectly gorgeous.

From the photography… Liz and Julien’s wedding ceremony took place at Summit Rock in Central Park with only their closest friends and relatives, including Julien’s from France, in attendance. Everyone headed over to the Four Seasons for the reception, with Liz and Julien in a vintage Checker Cab! Liz made all the Save the Dates by hand. Their wedding was exactly what they wanted, intimate, unfussy and completely their own. It was fun, loving, different and full of life!
