Behind the Scenes with Ferme à Papier + A Giveaway

I have a slight addiction to stationery. I physically cannot pass by a card store without stopping in, just for a peek (am I totally weird? Surely there’s someone who understands!) I often find myself splurging on my faves. And after recently being introduced to Ferme à Papier, I’m not sure I’ll be able to control myself. We recently caught up with the whizz behind this bizz – who is also the lovely lady behind the beloved namesake brand Cat Seto – and have an AMAZING giveaway to share.

SMP: How did you get your start in the stationery industry?
I was on a grant to write the “great novel” but had horrible writer’s block!  I started crafting finger puppets during my empty writing hours until I was staring at a drawer filled with hundreds of them. They became illustrated into cards that expanded into stationery line. When I debuted the line, Anthropologie became one of my first clients and my stationery business began.

SMP: From where do you draw your inspiration? What’s your creative process like?
I am inspired by my surroundings and I feel so fortunate to be living in San Francisco. My studio is open to the public and I love greeting customers, going out for walks into the microhoods or along the water. Ferme à Papier was inspired by my first trip to Paris last year where I visited biodynamic farms, ate my way through patisseries and admired the ways in which chic Parisians interpreted plaid. For each collection I will leaf through books, magazines and keep notes from my travel that follow me around the house or even to work.  I’m completely open when I am searching for inspiration but I become very introverted during the actual drawing process.  I usually start sketching very late at night (often 1am) when my son is asleep or will put headphones on and keep the curtains in my studio office closed.

SMP: Any tips for someone hoping to start their own paper line?
This is the case whether it’s design, illustration or writing : having a forum or group where you can bounce ideas off one another or share daily business tips has been essential to my stationery line. My peers keep me motivated to stay focused and will give me candid feedback on whether my point of view on a collection is spot-on or needs further refinement. Often it’s the latter and I am thankful for this extra “push”!

SMP: What matters to you most as an illustrator?
That the recipient receives some joy or loses themselves in the moment of the work as much as I did while creating it.

SMP: The best part of your job?
Waking up everyday and being able to create something with my hands. Feeling grateful and authentic about what I am doing.

SMP: The worst?
When you are a small business owner you juggle everything. I certainly don’t get to create on a whim all of the time. Many of the creative aspects of my job are pushed to the back burner during big deadlines and I have to stay focused and determined to get everything back into balance.

SMP: What’s the greatest lesson in business you’ve ever learnt?
A majority of your time, even if it’s a creative entity, is spent on business. If you don’t learn to accept this, you will not be fulfilled with what you do.

Wedding Etiquette from Lizzie Post + Bank of America

When it comes to wedding planning, talking finances can be tricky territory. Knowing who pays for what and how to keep track of it all…well, it’s enough to make any bride’s head spin. Luckily we’ve got Lizzie Post (great-granddaughter to the Emily Post) here today to share a little wedding etiquette 101. She’s teamed up with Bank of America, and is dishing her etiquette approach for the modern bride and groom.

Style Me Pretty: How should a couple and their families begin financially planning for wedding day?

Lizzie Post: First off, congratulations! When it comes time to start planning a wedding, it’s important for the couple and their parents to talk respectfully and candidly about finances and who will be able to contribute to what. Setting clear expectations and budgets at the start of the wedding planning process will help prevent tensions and stress later on.

Once that budget is set, make sure to refer back to it during the entire planning process. Bank of America’s mobile banking app is a great option for busy brides to check in on their budget, even while they’re on the go!

SMP: Let’s talk invitations. In an age of electronic everything, are physical invitations still a must?

LP:  For the most sacred and special occasions it’s best to stick with tradition and that means mailed, physical invitations; but electronic ones are sometimes too cute to pass up! Whichever route you choose, make sure your invites feel special and personal, because they really set the tone for the entire event. So if you’re hosting a formal wedding, go ahead and get fancy! Or if you’ve got a more modern, quirky day in store, don’t be afraid to craft something playful. It’s all about letting the invitations introduce your wedding style!

SMP: What about destination I Dos? What should couples consider if they want to have a destination wedding?

LP: Destination weddings are so popular these days and what an amazing way to celebrate the big day. For those planning a destination wedding there are definitely some tips to consider. First off, allow your guests significant time to plan to attend and make their arrangements. While the bride and groom should cover the cost of the bridal party’s accommodations, they are not obligated to cover the cost of the travel.

Destination brides and grooms should definitely consider the BankAmericard Travel Rewards® card as a way to help cover part of their travel costs. Since they can earn points for everyday purchases throughout the wedding planning process, it’s a great way for couples to help cover the costs of any travel expenses (hotels, flights, excursions, etc.) for the most important getaway of their lives! Visit BankAmericard Travel Rewards® to learn more.

SMP: Awesome! Any other tips for sticking to that wedding budget?

LP: It’s so important to keep a close eye on your budget during your planning process. Online tools like the Bank of America Mobile Banking App can be a great way to easily check in on your accounts when and where you want. You can even make transfers from your mobile device and stay on top of important account activity like payment reminders and balance checks.  It’s the perfect budget tool for busy couples on the go!

Now it’s your turn, SMPers! What wedding etiquette questions have you stumped? Lizzie will be back for another series, so fire away!

Washington D.C. Wedding from Ampersand Photography

I’m a bride who chose to wear flats on her wedding day. My husband, though very manly, is a little on the petite side. And so I find it absolutely endearing when brides choose to wear flats for the same reason. It warms my heart in the best way. But that’s not the best part of this wedding. Nope. Not even top ten. The day was so gorgeous (and obviously, since Events In The City was ever present), the bride so beautiful – thanks to Claudine Fay, and the mood so happy and captured brilliantly by Ampersand Photography, I almost forgot about the flats. Almost.

From the photographer… Sam & Jaime. I affectionately refer to them as “The Power Couple,” because… well, because they are. I met them, though, and became friends with them, before they even knew each other. Sam is a strange mixture of sarcasm and sincerity, and has this funny Indian humor thing going on that is absolutely hilarious. Jaime is witty and snarky, never short of comebacks or opinions, and has a huge heart. I was friends with both of them, and didn’t realize they didn’t know each other… until one evening we were all talking, and I said, “Sam, have you met Jaime yet?” And the snarky hilarity multiplied umpteen times. He thought she was pretty, intelligent, classy, and very funny, but nothing happened right away.

But it just so happened that they were both studying for the bar exam, and ended up in the same review course. Then they learned how well they clicked. “He was really distracting while we were studying. But it was a good distraction,” Jaime says. It wasn’t long before Sam asked Jaime out, officially. They went for pizza and frozen yogurt for their first date, and then she convinced him to walk her home. “Two and a half miles. Uphill. Obviously, I knew she was special,” said Sam.

Usually I’d say the rest was history, except Sam & Jaime’s “history” involved things like hunting with Jaime’s dad in Michigan, and hiking Mount Kilimanjaro together just a couple of months after they started dating, and training for a half marathon together. Sam proposed to Jaime on the coldest day in February in a snowstorm, as they rounded the Lincoln Memorial during a training run. She was shocked, then said yes, and then made him run the remaining six miles. Jaime says that her favorite song is “In Da Club” by 50 Cent, because that was playing on my iPod when he proposed.

The night before their wedding, all guests were invited to a party that incorporated Indian traditions— like the barat, where Sam’s family danced in a procession to meet Jaime’s family. Traditionally, the groom rides in on an animal (often an elephant). Since it proved difficult to rent an elephant, Sam arrived in a convertible mustang, instead.

A few other favorite details:

– Sam & Jaime were married the same place they met— Capitol Hill Baptist Church.
– They had the theme from 30 Rock as their recessional music (they’re big fans!!).
– They had a multi-flavor popcorn bar as an evening snack during their reception.
– Some of Sam’s family traveled from India for the first time in their lives, to be at their wedding. Sam’s grandmother passed away just a few short weeks after the wedding, but danced the night away during the reception!
– Jaime had a piece of lace from her great-grandmother’s wedding gown sown into her dress.
– They had a funfetti wedding cake.

Behind the Scenes with Samuelle Couture from KT Merry

Ever since her design graced the cover of our SMP Weddings book, I’ve been wholeheartedly obsessed with Samuelle Couture. Because she doesn’t just create dresses. She creates moments. And certainly isn’t afraid to break the traditional “wedding dress rules” along the way. We caught up Sam to talk everything from bridal trends to motherhood, and the always amazing KT Merry was on hand to capture. Catch our full Q&A below and find even more photo goodies tucked away right here.

Style Me Pretty: How did you get your start in the bridal industry?

Samuelle Couture: I began when friends asked me to design their wedding dresses. A number of them were artists, people who were looking for something other than the traditional wedding dress. They were also people with a creative eye and openness to collaboration.

SMP: First article of clothing you designed?

SC: As a younger person, the people, the looks and the sounds of London town inspired me. I came of age with Post-Punk – a very creative time in the UK for both music and fashion – and my earliest clothing designs would have been for me and my friends when we travelled into the city to see bands. It all seems a long, long time ago!

SMP: The moment you realized you had “made it” in the industry?

SC: I’m not sure if one ever feels one’s made it, it’s always a work in process from collection to collection I strive to create looks that stay true to my ideal. I’ve had some wonderful moments while founding Samuelle Couture, and built some great relationships with creative and like-minded people in the industry. It was very special to recently sell a collection to a notable store and also to have one of my wedding dresses appear on Vogue.com

SMP: The greatest lesson you’ve learned in business?

SC: I’ve been careful to grow and nurture Samuelle Couture organically, in a way that I can sustain and develop. It’s a learning process, and every business has it’s own personality.

SMP: Do you have any predictions for upcoming bridal trends?

SC: I’m not much of a trend follower. I would say that some of each new collection has been inspired by conversations I’ve had with past brides, as well as watching the beautiful fabrics and detailing in the couture collections. For me, the perfect wedding dress combines the mood of the moment as well as classic couture. It should captivate and inspire the bride and the audience!

SMP: Your advice for selecting that perfect gown?

SC: Don’t rush the decision, take your time and allow time.

SMP: How do you manage to balance work and motherhood?

SC: Balancing work and motherhood is a fine balance and quite a challenge! My new son is such a gorgeous beautiful spirit that I want to spend every minute with him. He makes me laugh instantly, and brings a new joy into my home. Designing and making wedding dresses has been my love for so many years, I am trying to nurture both!

SMP: Three things every woman should have in her closet?

SC: An inspired scent, some lovely underwear and a weekend get away bag!

SMP: Words to live by?

SC: Be true to yourself.

Friendsgiving from Melanie Duerkopp Photography

Now here’s a notion I could happily get on board with. A Thanksgiving feast with your closest friends in addition to the one surrounded by family? It may be the most brilliant idea yet. Not only do you get to wine and dine with your nearest and dearest, you get to do it twice! I do believe that Melanie & Myka are on to something. Oh, and there’s more where this came from right here.

From Myka… When Melanie approached me to help her with a styled shoot my answer was yes yes yes! Spending time in Healdsburg during the gorgeous Fall season is one of my all-time favorite pastimes, so it was a no brainer. We brainstormed and decided that a Friendsgiving styled shoot was the perfect plan. So we asked a few of our talented friends to donate their amazing skills. Amanda from One True Love Vintage provided the table and chairs, Lindsay from Frances Lane provided the plates, flatware and glasses, Alex + Craig from The Aerialist Press provided the menus and signage, Edyta, Georges, Susan and Ben helped to make the day a success.

We all love doing styled shoots, but at the end of the day, I’m always sad that no one is actually going to have a little party after all of the hard work everyone has put in to make a gorgeous tablescape . So, Melanie and I decided to ask everyone to stay after and we had an actual Friendsgiving party! It was amazing. To take in the beauty of the Gasparini Beals Private Vineyard, drink wine, and laugh the afternoon away, was absolutely perfect!
I honestly couldn’t have asked for a more fun day, and it reminds me of why I love working with all of these people so very much.

They are colleagues, but more importantly they are great friends! Happy Friendsgiving everyone.

LBB Spotlight!

You loyal SMPers are probably ol’ regulars over at our LBB blog. But for any newcomers to this place of pretty, you’re in for a treat. Because today we’re setting aside some time to spotlight a few of our amazingly talented LBBers, and the weddings they’ve helped bring to life. It’s just a tiny taste of all the lovely happening on the LBB blog each and every day, so make sure to pay it a visit for so much more.

This Mansfield, Ohio wedding is quite possibly the prettiest thing we’ve seen come out of the midwest (at least this month). It all went down on the lawn of a stunning mansion, and Lauren Kinsey Fine Art Weddings is sharing her take on the day with us right here.

If you were over on the LBB Blog this morning, you would have completely fallen in love with this shoot, which was all party of LBBer Erich McVey’s dreamy workshop. Shot by LBBer Perry Vaile Photography, it’s all sitting pretty right here.

LBBer Rose of Sharon shared her best budget friendly tips for your wedding floral design with us, and included a super pretty wedding right alongside it. Great advice for the DIY and budget brides, and stunning eye candy for us all.

Hazy Meadow Ranch Shoot from Natalie and Parker Bray

I crave inspiration like some people crave chocolate, so this shoot from Natalie and Parker Bray is acting as my delicious dose of prettiness for the day. With music as the inspiration, this talented team of vendors dreamt up a shoot that is sure to pretty up your day, and you can see it all right here.

From Natalie BrayInspiration can be found from many places. Music makes people smile and evokes memories that can last a lifetime. So why not use it as an inspiration for a Wedding :). Our Inspiration started with classic song from Louis Armstrong…”A Kiss to Build a Dream on”. The sweet melodies make me swoon with delight as I picture soft hues of pinks, mint, and creams with lots of golden light from our friend the sun :).

And our concept was born. A soft, feminine, and classic inspiration.
I, Natalie, did all the styling and DIY crafting for this shoot. It was so fun! I love creativity and working with talented people. Here is a description of all the lovely vendors involved…hope you love it!

It all started with the florals. I am a sucker for gorgeous blooms and Green Fresh Florals is one of the best! They created simple stunning arrangement of flowers with succulents, peonies, aster, and sweet peas. All perfectly placed to create an effortless bouquet and feminine center piece. The vessel for the centerpiece was found at an antique store and was used as an old drawer back in the day. It was perfectly distressed and a new way to use a found object. Love that!

Calligraphy is an amazing talent. Molly Jacques makes it look fun and effortless, which fit wonderfully with our concept. She created a large “A Kiss to Build a Dream on” print to display on a table or share at a Wedding. She also, hand drew table cards and menu’s to complete the look. Her work is incredibly beautiful.

I am a sucker for sweets and on my Wedding day the cake was such a treat. Azucar makes the sweetest, most delectable desserts. Vivian created a 2 tiered, hand stamped sugary goodness for the shoot with touches of pink and gold to compliment the styling. M bride has the most divine dresses and we chose a whimsical dream of sweet ruffles and tulle to accent the soft pinks and sweet nature of the inspiration song. Lots of kisses happened between the bride and groom lol! Make-up and hair I wanted to be effortless, natural, and feminine. Atelier Aucoin truly brought this vision to life with touches of soft pinks and bold eyes. Teal Green Designs provided the vintage furniture to complete the look. Hazy Meadow Ranch is a sprawling, green vintage inspired Wedding space in San Diego, ca. It provided the perfect backdrop to coalesce our concept.

Glitter, yes it can be used in so many ways and brought full circle the idea of the golden sun. So we used glitter to create a table number and table runner. So simple and sparkly for every bride. Plates and silverware from Anthropologie…added a pop of color to the table scape. Fun and matched the color scheme perfectly. Enjoy stamps were used from Olivemama.com to welcome guests to enjoy the delectable menu and have fun!
Created silk curtain banner with “dream” overhead for a soft reminder to let your love let you dream…and it starts with a kiss.

Lake Crackenback Wedding from Lovers Lane Photography

Weddings like this one are perfect for many reasons.  They’re stunningly intimate, gorgeously styled and brimming with soooo much pretty, it’s hard to even put into words.  But beyond all of the mesmerizing details and oh-so-lovely decor is a beautiful bride and groom who know a thing or two about facing challenges head on… with the help of each other and their amazing friends and family.  This, my friends, isn’t just a wedding, it’s a testament to true love, all captured by Lovers Lane Photography in ways that will take your breath away.  Click here for more.

From the Bride… Ben and I have both come from similar backgrounds and share a love of the mountains, our friends and our families. This was the inspiration behind our wedding at Crackenback. Lake Crackenback provided us with the opportunity to celebrate our marriage in the beautiful surrounds of the Snowy Mountains where we have both spent many years skiing, running and riding horses. Because this was a mutual venue for our family and friends, everyone was able to come together, enjoy themselves and revel in a weekend away where the most we had to worry about was how we were going to convince the groom to stay with his best man the night before.

I felt fortunate that I had the opportunity to spend the morning of my wedding with my parents, sister and bridesmaid. Their demeanor calmed the flurry of emotions that come with a wedding day and it was a truly special time to be able to spend with them. The excitement of having hair, makeup and a sneaky champagne throughout the morning meant that before I could catch my breath, it was time. I remember the excitement I felt walking up the stairs to put my dress on, knowing that I had a beautiful dress and a radiance and joy to match it. My dress felt like every wedding dress should… perfect, and when I saw my dad for the first time, I couldn’t help but notice the emotion that it stirred in him.

Being an outdoor wedding in the mountains, weather is always a concern, but the day could not have been better. As we walked outside for photos and to head to the ceremony, the only shiver I felt was the excitement of what the rest of the day held for us all. The ceremony could not have gone better. Set on top of a grassy hill overlooking Lake Crackenback and the Snow Mountains, we felt as though everything ‘just fit’ and I soon forgot about all the eyes looking at us.

After some lovely drinks with family and friends, Ben and I headed off with our bridal party for photos. Endless praise must go to our photographers Lovers Lane Photography, we had Lyndon for the day and despite having only just met us both, he had scouted photo locations perfectly.

Throughout our wedding planning, Ben had been very easy going about decisions, but when we arrived at our photo location his eyes lit up, ‘this is us’ he said, and I knew that our wedding photos were going to be forever treasured because they were a direct reflection of who we are and what we love.

Following our photos and on returning to Lake Crackenback, Ben and I decided we needed to share our day with another special person and so we all settled in to watch Black Caviar run her last race before heading to the reception. Despite having planned my tables and the venue layout etc, the room was only available to us on the day of the wedding to be setup and so I had not seen the venue completed. When we were announced and walked in though, I couldn’t have been happier. Everything was perfect!!

Ben and I have had a roller coaster 2013, as I was diagnosed with cancer only one month before our wedding and was scheduled to start treatment two days after our wedding. While many people may feel this is something that would cloud a wedding day, I can honestly say it had the opposite effect. We were so grateful to have this time with our friends and family, and everything just seemed to go right. We had the perfect venue, beautiful food and wine, a great band, beautiful weather, and topping it all off was a fantastic photographer who played such an important part in our day.

Our wedding date was the 13th of April 2013…. Too many unlucky thirteen’s in there many might say, but for us, it was a perfect pairing and a day we will never forget.

Ontario Wedding from Eyekahfoto

I think I love this wedding.  Actually, scratch that… I know I love this wedding.  Because this is a wedding that isn’t just chock-full of beautiful details (it sooo is), but is brimming with those kind of touching moments that will make your heart sing.  In other words, it’s a master class in vintage chicness with an awesome side of modern lovely, all set against a glamorous meets romantic setting.  Bask in the lovely captured by Eyekahfoto right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride… Picking the venue was easy, we’re from Toronto but Niagara held a charm to the both of us. It’s a place where we used to escape and go on mini vacations during University when we couldn’t afford a trip down south. We came across Queenston Heights in the summer when we were showing my siblings where he proposed. We heard classical music playing Bach’s Cello Suites. We followed the staircase leading up to the park, which led us to the historical Brock’s Monument. There, we saw a wedding taking place and we knew that was the place.

On the days leading up to the big day, the weather reports kept fluctuating. The day before the wedding, there was non-stop downpour. Miguel and I were closely monitoring the hourly weather for Saturday and the forecast looked grim. Rain was promised at 70 percent and we were devastated. We had a rain plan, but it wasn’t as romantic as our outdoor ceremony. I tossed and turned that night and decided to start the day at 6AM since I was too worried and anxious. I pushed open the curtains and rain was beading down my window. It was gloomy and cloudy and so were my spirits. I said a little prayer and proceeded to do my prep. A couple of hours later, the room seemed much brighter and sure enough, the sun came out for the rest of the day! There was so much emotion that day, I felt so blessed and thankful.

My personal style has always been classy, elegant and modern – I like a large variety of styles and colors (I am a graphic designer after all), so I knew planning my wedding would be a challenge. Initially, I was torn between having a Great Gatsby or a nautical theme. After pinning for several months, my vision became clearer. I wanted a more soft, demure and romantic vibe. Right away I thought of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” To interpret such effect, I started playing around with neutral shades. My colors were derived from summer elements like the gold from the sun’s rays, soft shades of pink and peach from peonies, and beige from the sand. We also incorporated gold Chevron patterns throughout our décor to give a modern substance.

Herrington Inn Geneva Wedding from Kina Wicks Photography

I’m just going to go out and say it – I am pretty much obsessed with this wedding. With a palette that makes my heart pitter patter, and images from Kina Wicks Photography so beautiful I could cry, there isn’t a prettier place on the internets than this gallery today. So make sure to soak up every gorgeous moment right here.

From Kina Wicks PhotographyMeagan and Mark’s wedding day was filled with so many sweet moments and perfect details. Meagan has a laugh that is infectious and makes everyone around her smile. And, the best part is, when Meagan laughs, Mark swoons. The way he looked at her throughout the entire day was enough to let anyone know that they were meant for each other. Meagan and Mark were so relaxed throughout the day, and it really showed in pictures. Their fun personalities shined through their perfectly chosen color pallet of pinks and oranges. Friends, family, as well as the bride and groom felt right at home in the beauty and love that surrounded them that day at the Herrington Inn & Spa.

Dallas Wedding from Shaun Menary Photography + Caroline Events

We get to swim in pretty weddings day in and day out on SMP Texas, but this beauty by Shaun Menary is one that will stick with me for awhile. It all started with the brides stunning Vera Wang gown, and then I just found myself surrendering to all the pretty from there. From the gorgeous florals by Bella Flora of Dallas to the garden reception space designed by Caroline Events that is straight out of my dreams – every last image sitting in this gallery is just beyond, and you can see them all here.

From the Bride…When we started brainstorming about our wedding and what we wanted, I began envisioning a kind of ethereal, magical fairyland or enchanted forest. Andrew, on the other hand, wanted something very modern and sleek with clean lines. So we fused those two visions. When we first visited the Nasher Sculpture Center, we knew immediately that it was the perfect space for our dream wedding. The Nasher by its very nature has already merged the modern with the magical. It achieves that through its design of contemporary sculpture set in a green garden in the midst of the skyscrapers of downtown Dallas. Andrew and I live in New York City, so we both loved that urban feel as well. What we (with the invaluable help of the incredible Caroline Fair of Caroline Events) were able to achieve was such a gorgeous fusion of our two visions. The most beautiful, lush flower arrangements by Bella Flora brought my fairyland into the city, where we all got lost in our metropolitan dreamland.

From Shaun Menary Photography…Lindsey Richards is a New Yorker right now, but she’s a native Texan through and through. So when she and Andrew decided to tie the knot, they thought that a Dallas wedding would be best, and I’ve got to say, that decision was spot-on! At first, we were mentally preparing for 110 degree weather and a sweat-fest, but thankfully this Texas summer was a mild one, and the reception venue was breezy and shady. So, it was pretty much picture perfect.

Lindsey and Andrew are a super fashionable couple, and they love modern style. The All Saints Chapel at The Episcopal School of Dallas, with its soaring vaulted ceilings, white geometric wall patterns, and generally minimalist aesthetic, was the perfect venue for their ceremony. The reception took place in the garden of the Nasher Sculpture Center, where massive modern sculptures combined with stunning landscaping framed the evenings events.

And if you couldn’t tell from the venues that this couple has some serious style, just check out that wedding dress. It’s a Vera Wang (rumored to be one of her personal favorites, actually), and Lindsey accessorized it with a headpiece from Mark Ingram Atelier in New York. And she looked stunning. Andrew was super handsome in a Hugh Boss suit.

Puerto Rico Wedding from 13:13 Photography

I’ve decided that I need a vacation.  I mean, don’t get me wrong… I love this crazy gorgeous fall weather we’ve been having, and all of the hot cocoa sipping that goes right along with it.  But doesn’t a trip to the lovely land also known as Puerto Rico sound just soooo awesome?  Especially if that trip was anything like this drop.dead.gorgeous wedding captured by 13:13 Photography, a literal non-stop day of pretty with one totally fun party. See it all right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride… This hot blooded Colombian-American girl met her Norwegian viking skier, John, in Denver, CO in 2008. He turned my world upside down, and he proposed in the arctic frost of Norway in 2010.

The biggest challenge for John and I was deciding on the destination to celebrate our special day with friends and family from across the globe. As we were wedding planning from Norway, we decided to choose a neutral territory where we could combine traditions from our American, Colombian, and Norwegian upbringings. We chose the island of enchantment, Puerto Rico, and more specifically Hotel El Convento, a timeless and traditional restored luxury hotel nestled in the heart of the charming and mysterious Old San Juan.

While planning our wedding we kept our priorities relatively simple. We knew we wanted great music, an all-night dance party, and readings from my brother, and John’s sister during the ceremony. Our ceremony was held in a large courtyard at Centro de Estudios Avanzados next to the Hotel El Convento. The courtyard has beautiful arches, blossoming trees, and the refreshing aura of the Puerto Rican sun and breeze.

Following the ceremony we played in the cobblestone streets in Old San Juan while our wonderful photographers from 13:13 Photography captured our first moments as husband and wife. A cocktail hour, consisting of abundant and fruity sangria and a Puerto Rican cigar roller, was held al fresco for our guests in the elegant Patio Del Nispero of The Hotel El Convento, in the shadow of the hotel’s famous century-old, nispero fruit tree. Following cocktail hour, the guests were invited into the ballroom for dinner, speeches, and dancing. Our fabulous live band played the perfect mix of latino dance music combined with catchy tunes from Europe and the U.S.A. Everyone was on their feet, moving to the music, with the last bite of their dinner.

Around 11 pm, we surprised our guests with the arrival of drummers playing ‘batucada’ (a substyle of samba and refers to an African influenced Brazilian percussion style). This began the Colombian tradition of ‘hora loca.’ All the guests were provided props such as masks, silly hats, sunglasses, and whistles, to join the live drummers on the dance floor. The Puerto Rican rum was flowing, the dancing feet of our loved ones were rhythm to our ears, and we cannot imagine a night better spent surrounded by our favorite people from 12 different countries.

When the venue closed down, we crossed the centuries old cobblestone streets to a local dive bar, and continued to the wee hours of the morning accompanied by our closest friends and our new friends from 1313 Photography, for some local beer and laughs.

The NotWedding Bridal Shower from Hike Photography

It’s been over three years since I was a Bride, but this stunning shower designed by Cape Cod Celebrations and captured by Hike Photography for The NotWedding would have been my bridal shower dream come true. Overflowing with florals from Patrice Milley and hosted at the oh-so-gorgeous Sea Crest Beach Hotel, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a bride-to-be that didn’t want to celebrate in this style. It’s absolutely stunning. See it all here.

From Cape Cod CelebrationsThe NotWedding is coming to Cape Cod this November so a bunch of the participating vendors got together on a beautiful Cape Cod fall day and designed a bridal shower shoot to promote the event! The shoot was inspired by The NotWedding Cape Cod’s inspiration board, which is a secret until after the event, but boy is it a beauty!

At the the styled shoot, Peyton, the NotBride for the event, was being showered by her friends poolside at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in Falmouth. The girls drank champagne, completed a DIY paint-by-number canvas for Peyton, had delicious desserts, cooled off by the pool and sent a wish lantern into the sky for her at the end of the party, after opening presents of course! The girls left that night with nail polish favors.

Jamie, from Cape Cod Celebrations, designed the shoot with the help of one of the Hike girls, Alissa. Kelly Hike, and her sister Alissa, are the photographers from Hike Photography and they did an amazing job capturing the details and the fun ideas that we wanted to share! The lighting could not have been better! Patrice Milley brought in some gorgeous flowers to compliment the table and linens from Rentals Unlimited, and Vanessa from the The Chocolate Rose Cake Shoppe & Bakery put together a beautiful cake and dessert spread for the ladies. M. Smith & Company designed the invitation and place cards and OnCape Time provided signs for the shower. Shoreline Interiors, a high end shop in Dennis, provided the gift for the bride, a set of 2 Match pewter ice tea glasses, hand-crafted from Italy.

The Gardens at Great Oaks from Scobey Photography

When your engagement begins with an uber-romantic proposal in Paris (“love locks” included), you know your wedding is going to be something extra special.  The kind of wedding that exudes pure beauty from start to finish and is chock-full of heartwarming moments between beloved friends and family. This, my friends, is that wedding; a gorgeous purple-hued day set against the stunning Gardens at Great Oaks with an entire gallery of lovely captured by Scobey Photography.  Join me there for every ounce of pretty.

From the Bride… Tony and I were engaged in Paris, France on March 8th, 2012. He proposed on a bridge covered in locks near the Notre Dame. The locks are locked to the links on the bridge by lovers who write their name on their lock, attach it to the bridge, and throw the keys into the river to symbolize their infinite love for each other. Tony had written our names on a lock for the occasion, and when I tossed our keys into the river, he got down on one knee. The locks inspired us to have a wedding that had the feel of Paris – the watercolor purples of the Seine, the Old World lace, the romantic lovebirds nesting in the rafters of the buildings. And of course we had to include locks and keys!

We started planning for a wedding in Georgia where we’re both from. Historic Roswell was ideal in terms of location for our families and the many people traveling to our wedding – including us! We are current residents of Boston, MA, where Tony is in his last year of law school and I am a writer. Tony’s schedule made timing a wedding difficult, because law students don’t have a summer break. During the summer, law students are expected to work as summer associates at law firms, courthouses and the like. So our choices were to have the wedding during his Spring Break in early March, or in August during the small break between work and school. Although March 2013 would have been a lovely time because it was so close to our engagement date, the weather wasn’t what we had our hearts set on. So August it was, and the venue we loved – The Gardens at Great Oaks, just happened to have August 10th, 2013 open.

When the day arrived, it was magical. I remember being in my hotel room taking a shower and thinking, “Is this it? Is this real?” The bridesmaids, my mother and I got ready in a suite at the Doubletree Hotel in Roswell, GA. The makeup team from Brushworx was there to greet us and did all of our makeup and hair for the day. We got ready in robes I ordered on Etsy and enjoyed mimosas, Chick-fil-A biscuits, and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I have missed those Southern staples! Lacey from Scobey Photography arrived halfway through the process and began taking pictures. Her enthusiasm was contagious and she had us all laughing. What I didn’t know is that she was trying to pump everyone up because there was a torrential downpour outside!

All week, it had rained every day, and it had rained around our ceremony time of 6:30 PM. I was worried but everyone assured me that if it rained, we’d figure something out. My fabulous wedding planner Pat Gardella had a plan B, C and D – but of course as a bride I was fretting over the details. As the time drew near, I saw the rain come pouring from the sky. Even on the way over, I thought there was no way I would have my outdoor ceremony. But when we arrived at the Gardens, it was like God had opened up the clouds just over the house, and the sun streamed through and bathed everything in a heavenly glow. It was a perfect daydream light that I feel really shows through in Lacey’s photos.

Like every other bride says, the rest of the day just flew! All my vendors were so professional that all I noticed was the great jobs they did.

Sarah Provow from Bloomin’ Bouquets helped my watercolor floral vision come to life. Wrapped around my bouquet is a handkerchief that belonged to my maternal great grandmother, and a cameo belonging to my late grandmother on my father’s side. There is also a lock that matches the key hanging from Tony’s boutonniere. The flowers include Rose Patience, Lisanthus Lavender, Garden Roses, Stock, Orchids, Hydrangeas and more. She also provided mercury class vases on the tables that gave a vintage feel. Other items on the table included pictures from Tony and my relationship, thank you notes, French styled lavender napkins, and table numbers that look like old vintage postcards sent from Paris ordered from Etsy. Sarah also set up the canvas with the picture someone grabbed in Paris of our proposal!

Outside in the yard were Cornhole (you know, the bean bag game) boards that were handmade and hand painted by my mother, Angie. They feature my alma mater and favorite team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and Tony’s favorite team, the Florida Gators. The years listed are the years where the teams won national championships in football. People played during cocktail hour.

Also during cocktail hour we had a tour guide who gave tours of the Civil War era historical home. Our guests could see the beautiful rooms and hear the stories behind the antiques and the family history of the people who once lived there.

Another handmade item by my mother was the escort card board. She hand selected vintage keys and tied them to escort cards shaped like luggage tags. She took a corkboard, painted the frame, and put key fabric over it. It was so fun!

Tony and I ordered a birdhouse cardbox from Etsy with our wedding date and colors on it. Other bird details include mini guestbooks with lovebirds, and a lovebird cake topper purchased from Hallmark (they are actually salt and pepper shakers).

The signs for Signature Drinks and the thank you notes found at each place setting were worded, printed and cut by me. I purchased paper at Staples, downloaded some free fonts, and arranged them in Adobe Photoshop. Then I printed them and cut them to size. It was a great way to add detail while also thanking my guests in a personal way, since I am a writer.

I also made 120 wedding wands! I’m sure you lovely folks at SMP know what wedding wands are. I used two colors of ribbon and one strand of lace that I aged over a candle. It was a long process but a labor of love! One of the bridesmaid’s zipper broke, and we stuck a wedding wand in there to hide it. Voila! Wedding magic. They were handed out by my cousins before the ceremony and people used them to wave us on our trip down the aisle as husband and wife, as well as at the end of the night. And they were fun dance floor accessories, too!

The mustaches that hooked around the beer bottles were made by Tony’s friend as a gift to us. They were a hit! They make you look like you have a mustache while you drink your beer.

The Signature Drinks were the Mint to Be – Mint Vodka Sweet Tea with Mint Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, mint leaves from the garden, and sweet tea with a hint of lemon – and the Something Blue – a Blue Hawaiian.

The dinner menu was Southern and French – everything from Fried Buttermilk Chicken Tenders to a beautiful Roast Beef with Au Jus. Jerry Dilts & Associates did an amazing job.

Our cake was simple vanilla buttercream frosting over raspberry cake. But the cake the guest enjoyed were actually petit fours in all kinds and flavors – fruit tarts, chocolate truffles, etc. And they were delivered on a French pastry cart that Tony’s mom Tina found at an antique store. We donated it to the venue afterwards – people loved it!

After the drinking and dancing, the party was over much too soon. On our way to the limousine, our guests tossed French lavender and waved their wedding wands. It was the perfect end to our perfect day. I hope you feel it was as dreamy as we did.

Oregon Wedding Inspiration from Perry Vaile Photography

What you’re about to see is the trifecta of beauty: Oregon’s natural, rustic landscape. A peek into Erich McVey Photography’s special workshop. And the images of Perry Vaile Photography (we’re big fans). The workshop was featured recently on Wedding Chicks through Erich’s lens, and judging by what you’re about to see, Perry must have been taking good notes, because her take on the shoot is amazing.

From the photographer… Oregon has a raw beauty all it’s own: hardy wild plants, rough mountain peaks, and flowing rivers all combined to help create the perfect location for this stunning styled shoot at the Erich McVey Workshop. The styling and florals embraced the authenticity of the scenery and highlighted the unique location, while Erich, his wife Amy and the amazing team they collected provided the warmth and generosity that really made the week truly memorable.

Sweet Potato Au Gratin from Waiting on Martha

So I’m not sure if you knew this, but on Thanksgiving calories don’t count. It’s true. I double checked. And that’s especially good news because Waiting on Martha‘s recipe for sweet potato au gratin is anything but low fat. With layers of cheese and cream and all sorts of incredible delicious goodness. But I swear it’s worth every calorie laden bite. My stomach’s rumbling already.

Sweet Potato Au Gratin
prep time
40 Minute/s
cook time
1 Hour/s 20 Minute/s
total time
2 Hour/s
Serves 8Ingredients
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup half & half cream
  • 4 cloves of garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1 1/2 russet potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme chopped
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a small pot bring cream, 1/2 and 1/2 and garlic just to a simmer and set aside. Butter a casserole dish or gratin dish and set aside. Stir the cooling cream occasionally to help prevent skin from forming.
  2. Start building your layers. Spread the sweet potatoes out in a single layer, sprinkle with salt, pepper, thyme and cheese. Continue building layers, alternating sweet and russet potatoes until your casserole dish is filled. Stir the garlic and cream sauce once more then pour it over your potatoes, trying to distribute the cream as evenly as possible. Sprinkle cheese over the top, setting aside 1/4 cup of both the cheddar and Gruyere.
  3. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the middle of the oven for 50 minutes. Remove the foil and sprinkle with the remaining cheese and bake an additional 20 minutes or until the top is lightly browned and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a sharp knife. Remove from the oven and let cool for 20 minutes before serving. **If you are using a deeper casserole dish you'll have to extend cooking time**

From the Bride… As two Oklahoma City natives from rivaling high schools, ironically, Adam and I did not meet until my sophomore year of college. He was a Sooner at the University of Oklahoma, and I was a bulldog at the University of Georgia (GO DOGS!). While home over Thanksgiving break, we finally crossed paths at a party hosted by my older brother. After exchanging phone numbers and a few laughs, we sparked a great friendship that would eventually lead to love. Upon graduating college, we officially started our relationship as we both we packed our bags and moved north to Washington D.C. While in D.C., our relationship blossomed, and we both knew that we had something special.

After two years working on The Hill, Adam and I decided it was time to go home. When we moved back to Oklahoma City, we added two more to our little clan, our golden doodles, Rosie and Dood. Our family was complete, besides one little thing

On leap day, February 29, 2012, Adam decided it was finally time to make our family whole. I was picking up around the house, doing nothing out of the ordinary, when Adam told me to check our dog, Rosies, collar to see if it was too tight. I thought little of his request, as our dogs were always a topic of conversation. When I reached down to feel the clasp of her collar, I felt something else instead- a diamond ring. Adam got down on one knee, and I said yes.

Adam and I were married on February 9, 2013. To escape the cold Oklahoma winter and to have a more intimate guest list, we chose to hold our wedding in Phoenix, Arizona, a vacation spot we both frequented growing up. Set on the golf course of Paradise Valley Country Club, the Camelback Mountains mountains provided a scenic view for guests as Adam and I said I do. After going to school in Georgia, I fell in love with the south. Although we were married in Arizona, I knew that I wanted to incorporate touches of southern charm into our wedding. From tabletops accented with succulents, Spanish moss and lace detailing, to a clear tent featuring cascading chandeliers, our wedding was picturesque. As our family and friends danced the night away under the Arizona sky, Adam and I became Mr. and Mrs. Rainbolt.

For our honeymoon, we spent 10 days traveling around New Zealand. We both love adventure. From beaches to mountains, New Zealand has it all. During our stay we hiked in rain forests, fly fished in rivers, and explored different cities. We are both well traveled and were in awe of what New Zealand had to offer. We are already planning our return trip.

Jacksonville Engagement Session from J. Layne Photography

So this is what happens when an uber-stylish duo joins forces with a seriously talented team of photogs and frolics around the gorgeous Jacksonville countryside… pure magic.  A day of drop-dead gorgeous magic, to be exact, complete with towering Spanish Moss trees and one totally adorable puppy.  It’s what we’re calling a love-fest to the extreme and you can see every last glamorous moment captured by J. Layne Photography right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride… My fiance, Michael and I just recently relocated to Florida from New England. Not long after we moved he popped the question on a gorgeous August morning on Atlantic Beach.  He had made engraved dog tags that he secretly placed our our dog’s collar with all of the reasons he wanted to marry me. I just about died!

After MAJOR research we came across the most amazing photographers, Chelsi and Justin, the couple that make up J. Layne Photography. We didn’t get the chance to meet until the night of our engagement photos but within minutes we were all laughing and joking like old friends. I’ve always wanted a “woodsy” feel for our engagement photos with a hint of glam and I knew I wanted to incorporate the amazing Spanish Moss trees in Florida as we don’t have anything even close to that in New England. Chelsi and Justin suggested the most amazing park in our new hometown to shoot and it was exactly what I had pictured!

I was then on the hunt for the perfect outfits as fashion is something we both love. Once I found an amazing black Free People dress I knew that Mike’s slim fit suit, J. Crew buffalo check tie and suspenders would make for the perfect glam fest in the woods! We then (well, I really) shopped for a more casual outfit to tie in some spring colors, as our wedding will be in May of next year. After realizing I had the perfect bright orange skirt in my closet already I went on a hunt for an outfit for Mike to match. Oso, our sharpei/pug mix had to be a part of this special day so we found him an adorable plaid bow tie to wear to complete the look.

We started off walking all through the park and posing in different area’s under the beautiful Spanish moss trees. Towards the end of the session we broke out the Veuve clicquot, and had a little picnic shoot under the fading sun on a pale blue blanket and cozy pillows. We then finished off the champagne with our new friends, Chelsi and Justin and shared stories until the sun went down.

Alder Manor Wedding from The Melideos

There is so much to love about this Alder Manor wedding captured by The Melideos I don’t even know where to start. But maybe we should start with that stunning blush gown from Monique Lhuillier. It’s what wedding gown dreams are made of. Or maybe we should just sit for awhile to soak in the garden glam feel of the fête. Wherever you decide to spend your swooning energies, this gallery is one fabulous place to do so.

From The MelideosWe were absolutely thrilled to head back to the east coast to one of our all-time favorite venues for Jane and Jeff’s gorgeous wedding. Alder Manor is a historic home in Yonkers, New York that had fallen into neglect for many years before being restored as an event venue. The entire property is in various stages of disrepair and it absolutely takes your breath away at every turn. Jane and Jeff had their ceremony among the fallen pillars in the sculpture garden, then headed into the opulent dining room for dinner, and ended in the grand ballroom for an all-night dance party. We had so much fun exploring the property with these two love birds, from the empty swimming pool to the restored library, all with their adorable little pup in tow. And we were dying over Jane’s gorgeous blush gown…just look at it on that stairway! Perfection. This wedding was full of sweet moments and we were so happy to share them with the bride and groom!
