Do’s and Don’ts For Picking The Perfect Bridal Party

Choosing your bridal party is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning. You’re choosing the women who will be standing by your side on the most important day of your life, and it’s a place of honor. They’re also the ones who will be throwing your bachelorette party, attending your bridal shower, and getting excited with you on the morning of the big day.

Here’s a handful of tips on choosing a supportive sisterhood for the day of your wedding.

Do: Decide on a number ahead of time.

With your groom, figure out a realistic number of groomsmen and bridesmaids. You may have a mile-long list of girls to ask, but if he only has three ideas for groomsmen, you’ll need to do some compromising. Consider the size of your wedding, too—you might not want a 20-person bridal party with only 50 guests in the audience.

Don’t: Ask brand new friends.

Adding friends you’ve only recently met to your bridal party can sometimes be a decision you regret later. Even if a new pal has major best-friend potential, it’s hard to know how they’ll act in stressful situations like weddings if you haven’t experienced them with her before. With a brand new friend, it can also be difficult to see if you’ll still be as tight a year from now, or if they’re just the kind of friend who latches and leaves. For your bridal party, stick to friends you’ve known for at least a year. At the same time, just because you’ve known your childhood neighbor for 25 years doesn’t mean she deserves a spot in your wedding party. Pick friends who have proven loyalty and kindness, not just who you’ve known the longest.

Do: Consider costs.

At the end of the day, being a bridesmaid can get pricey. Most “who-buys-what” traditions have fallen by the wayside, and bridesmaids are often responsible for purchasing the dress, hair, makeup, gift, and travel costs—and that’s not even including the shower or bachelorette party! If you have a friend who’s super strapped for cash, don’t put that pressure on her. It’ll put her in an awkward situation and leave you feeling terrible for going with the more expensive gown. Be upfront when asking bridesmaids what your expectations are so they’re not left in the dark.

Don’t: Ask someone who doesn’t support your marriage.

If your groom thinks your college roommate’s quirks are obnoxious, that’s one thing, but if the friend you want to ask has tried to talk you out of your marriage? There can’t be a place for them in the bridal party. They don’t need to be best friends, but if your groom and your friend can’t see eye-to-eye, your groom has to win this one. It’s the day you two become one, and you don’t want any naysayers at the head table.

Do: Avoid negativity.

We all have that friend who complains about getting sunburned on beautiful days. You don’t want someone who will be constantly bringing down your mood around you on your wedding day. The last thing you want on the morning of your wedding is someone who’s whining about the short dress or questioning your makeup choices!

Don’t: Ask people just because they asked you.

Being asked to be a bridesmaid is an honor, but don’t feel pressure to ask friends simply because they asked you. As times change, who you surround yourself with changes as well, and you may not be as close to friends as you once were. Or maybe you’re having fewer maids, or you want to include every one of the groom’s five sisters (so nice of you)! The point is, don’t feel constricted by repaying favors.

The great thing about weddings? There are a million jobs that need doing. If your cousin or coworker doesn’t make the cut but you still want them to feel involved, give them another job, like a personal attendant or reader. There’s room for everyone on your wedding day—but keep your bridal party for the near and dear to your heart.

A Classic Wedding Atop the Couple’s Favorite Mountain

Choosing to hold their wedding at The 10th in Vail, Colorado was a no brainer – it’s their favorite restaurant atop their favorite mountain, where they enjoy skiing and hiking year round. The breathtaking views of the mountain range beyond didn’t hurt either. Sara Hasstedt Photography and Films About Love captured their classic, fall nuptials, planned to perfection by Calluna Events.

From the Bride… We met in San Francisco on Tinder when the app first came out. Michael messaged me after seeing we had 40 or more mutual friends from the same college. As it turns out, we both went to the University of Southern California at the same time, and we were both in the business school with many mutual friends, but our paths never crossed. We both had been in relationships that moved us up to San Francisco from Los Angeles and that ended soon after moving to the city, and then we met one year later! We felt like it was meant to be. A year later, Michael got a job offer in his home town of Denver, Colorado and said he wasn’t going to take it unless I moved with him. It was clear to us that we wanted a future together, so I took the leap of faith and moved out of my home state of California to Colorado.

When we thought about where we wanted to be married, Vail, Colorado came quickly to mind because it holds such a special place in our hearts – it’s where we feel our happiest and most energized. We knew this place we cherish so much is where we wanted to be married among all of our family and friends. One of our favorite things to do together is ski, especially on Vail Mountain where Michael grew up skiing. In the summer and fall, we love to hike the same mountain. Across all seasons, we always have lunch at one of our favorite restaurants in Vail, The 10th, located at the top of Vail Mountain. While we were having lunch there one day, it was like a light bulb went off in both of our heads. We both knew this would be the ideal location for our wedding reception – it’s at the top of our favorite mountain, at our favorite restaurant, overlooking the expansive mountain range.

I’ll never forget the first time I experienced fall in the mountains. Michael and I took a drive through some steep and windy roads near Vail. The aspen trees were a glistening gold that looked like glitter against the sunny blue sky with a slight chill. It was one of the most beautiful days I had ever seen. When thinking about the time of year we wanted to be married, I couldn’t help but think back to this day. There is such a romantic and magical feeling in the air this time of year in the mountains. What a perfect setting for our wedding! These feelings served as the best inspiration for our big day.

We were so excited to show our family and friends what we had planned. It was such a unique and, as some guests called it, “once in a lifetime” experience. Our wedding day included our ceremony in Vail’s quaint white chapel that sits alongside a river, a walk through Vail Village, and then a private gondola ride up the mountain for a grand celebration where the cocktail hour and reception took place.

We wanted to find ways to incorporate our French bulldog (Bentley) in the wedding as a mascot throughout the weekend. He was drawn on the front cover of our “Welcome to Vail” booklets that guests were presented with when they checked into their hotels, and he was on the signature cocktail menu with Bentley’s suggested “mocktails” for a festive, non-alcoholic beverage option.

We aspired to have our wedding evoke a magical, romantic, and celebratory feeling full of love and warmth. Our ceremony at the Vail Chapel was traditional with communion. It was important to us that the service felt intimate and personal. We wanted the décor in the church to feel ethereal, so the flower arrangements were filled with lush greenery and white flowers and adorned with ribbons. The green and white wreaths we had hanging at the entrance doors were a favorite of mine! We loved that seven of our guests read a prayer from their pews, which guests said made them feel a part of the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, we loved walking through a line of our guests waving ribbon streamers as we came out of the church. We took a group picture of everyone in front of the chapel, which is so fun for us to have now.

Guests were offered personalized water bottles and sandals, and we had maps printed in the ceremony programs with walking directions that we wrote ourselves, describing our favorite walking path to the gondola and places to see along the way.

We were inspired by the existing décor at our reception with its dark reds, chocolate browns, and cream colors. We didn’t want it to feel moody, so we used some of these colors and incorporated bright red and fuchsia flowers into the flower arrangements, along with plums, pomegranates, and berries for a “fall feast” feeling across the tables. We had a few guests that even enjoyed eating the fruit! Tying in the golden fall foliage outside and the celebratory feeling we wished to convey, we mixed in gold accents from the drink stirrers, glassware, and chargers on the table and sequin tablecloths on the cocktail rounds. We wanted the room to be filled with candlelight and warmth, so we had all of the tables and window ledges filled with candles, and we had twinkle lights strung behind the band and above the dance floor. Another highlight was a large “H&M” monogram covered in bright red and pink flowers that greeted guests when they entered the reception. We loved everything about the reception décor, especially the celebratory feeling it evoked. We loved the design of our cake with all of its beautiful sugar flowers and delicious fall flavors.

Looking back on the day, our favorite memories were when it felt like time slowed and stood still for just that moment. When it felt like it was just the two of us smiling at one another. When we first held each other’s hands and locked eyes after I walked down the aisle. And when we danced our first dance and held each other as husband and wife. We both could not stop smiling in these moments and felt more joy than we ever had before.

Healthy Travel Tips – Dessert + Wine Included!

Healthy travel may seem like a contradiction, especially with the overabundance of unhealthy treats and snacks in airports. But, with a little preparation and a discerning eye, your next trip doesn’t have to exclude a healthy lifestyle. As a Registered Dietitian and avid traveler, I know the all-or-nothing approach rarely works.

Plan Ahead
Planning ahead takes a little extra effort, but will ultimately make a world of difference in sticking to a healthy lifestyle while away from home. Before leaving, pack a few TSA-approved snacks, like pre-measured nuts (stick to around ¼ cup servings), freeze-dried fruit, or pre-cut vegetables like carrots, celery, or snap peas. These will be easy to stash in a carry-on and will stay fresh until you reach your destination.

If already in the airport, look for healthy snacks at coffee shops or newsstands, including unflavored popcorn, bistro boxes, roasted chickpeas or whole fruit. Snack bars are ubiquitous, but not all are created equal. Look for bars with simple ingredient lists and no added sugar or sweeteners. Protein sources in bars should come from familiar foods, like nuts, seeds, or egg whites. Skip bars with processed protein sources, like isolated soy protein or protein concentrate, as they can often cause GI distress or abdominal cramping — something each of us should be happy to avoid in-flight.

Stay Hydrated
Cabin air is notoriously dehydrating, but dehydration happens both in the air and on the ground. Many people aren’t drinking enough water on a daily basis, meaning those out-of-routine times likely result in even less H2O consumption. Water aids in improved digestion, gives skin a dewy look, and can even help improve jet lag symptoms. To combat dehydration, bring along a water bottle from home to refill in the airport once past security. This will this ensure you’ll have enough water on-hand and the visual cue will prompt you to drink more.

In-flight, avoid sugar or sodium-rich beverages, like sodas or tomato juice, which may worsen dehydration. If you’re feeling festive, choose wine or an alcohol without added sugary mixers, like juice. Try to stick with one adult beverage in-flight and drink plenty of water before and after.

Savor Indulgences
You’ve worked hard for your vacation time, so you certainly want to enjoy yourself. Instead of simply throwing caution to the wind and ignoring nutritious foods until the post-vacay blues set in, think about meals in a more balanced way. When dining out, consider the meal in its entirety and decide which indulgences mean the most to you.

If you have a sweet tooth, skip the bread basket and instead, choose a dessert you truly love and split it with a friend. Or, if out for pasta or pizza, stick to a reasonable portion, but round out the meal with plenty of non-starchy vegetables, like a green salad, roasted brussel sprouts or cauliflower. Eat the vegetables first to fill up with fiber and nutrients before diving into the more decadent dishes.

Overall, choose mindful indulgences that are true treats to you and special to the trip itself. Consider skipping those easily accessible options you can find at home and instead, opt to savor local delicacies or the restaurant’s famous dishes. When thinking about the entire trip, allow yourself a few indulgent items while filling in the majority of meals with healthier foods. Granting yourself permission to enjoy certain foods removes guilt and helps to stay on track, both throughout the trip and once arriving back home.

Beach Wedding Done Right

This is a beach wedding done right. The Bride and Groom both hold a strong affinity for the ocean, and they even got engaged while seaside! It only made sense for them to celebrate saying “I do” in Montauk, surrounded by their loved ones at their favorite location. From the place cards nestled in sand to the use of beachgrass as decor and driftwood as centerpieces and a ceremony arch, classic beach elements were used in a natural and organic way. The result is breathtaking, so don’t miss a single photo in this gallery by Levi Stolove Photography.

From Levi Stolove PhotographyNicole grew up in Minnesota and Elliot in Long Island, but when the two met in Hong Kong while traveling for work, something was sparked. They were both living in New York City a year later when they met at a restaurant and realized they had found a true partner. Both of them feel a strong connection to the ocean, and when Elliot was ready to propose to Nicole, he chose a beautiful beach setting, so when it came time to plan their wedding, they felt it would be great to connect the engagement to the wedding by way of the landscape and environment. The beach vibe –both elegant and laid back – suited their personalities well. Most important to them was to have a fun and lively day connecting their families and friends together.

Honeymoons of the Rich + Famous: Where Your Favorite Celebs Celebrate “I Do”

Stars, they’re just like us, right? Wrong. Majorly wrong, at least when it comes to their honeymoons because when celebrities honeymoon, they don’t just go to a fabulous beach resort and lie in the sun for a week, they go to several five-star resorts and lie in the sun for several weeks. Jealous? Us, too, and just wait until you read the details below!

Pippa Middleton + James Matthews
According to sources, Pippa and James will spend the first leg of their honeymoon on the Pacific island of Tetiaroa, an island once owned by Marlon Brandon and now known as The Brando. With 35 thatched villas, each with their own outdoor bath and infinity pool, this eco-friendly luxury resort is basically paradise. After their romantic week on the island, the newlyweds will head back to the U.K. to the Scottish Highlands, where the groom’s family owns an estate.

Kate Middleton + Prince William
To state the obvious, Kate and Will’s royal honeymoon was worthy of royalty. Following their wedding of the century, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge jetted off to the ultra exclusive North Island of the Seychelles for a 10-day honeymoon that reportedly cost $720,000. Included in that whopping price tag? A private villa, butler service, unlimited scuba diving and spa treatments — talk about the royal treatment!

Miranda Kerr + Evan Spiegel
The supermodel and Snapchat CEO jetted off to Fiji to celebrate their new marriage at the Laucala Island Resort, an exclusive island resort that sits on 3,500 acres in gorgeous Fiji that averages anywhere between $12,000 – $60,00 per night. The resort is completely secluded and only accessible via private jet. Each villa offers private infinity pools, floor to ceiling windows, 360 degrees of unreal views… need I say more?

Jennifer Aniston + Justin Theroux
We can credit the latest “groupmoon” trend to Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, who jetted off to Bora Bora with a group of close friends in tow, following their surprise backyard wedding. The group allegedly holed up in the luxe Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, an enclave of 120 bungalows and overwater villas set on a private island, accessible only by the hotel’s yacht.

Amal Alamuddin + George Clooney
Mr. and Mrs. Clooney are probably in nesting mode following the birth of twins (Ella and Alexander — so stinkin’ cute), but these new parents are quite the globetrotters! The details on their honeymoon are a little iffy, but sources report the two relaxed on the Seychelles’ secluded North Island or traveled to their English estate following their romantic Venice nuptials. Either way, we wouldn’t say no to a romantic two weeks with George Clooney!

Carrie Underwood + Mike Fisher
For their July 2010 honeymoon, Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher headed to the islands of Tahiti for a romantic vacation in paradise. The two stayed at Le Taha’a Resort, where they went swimming, snorkeling with sharks and on a helicopter tour of the island.

Whitney Port + Tim Rosenman
After their Palm Springs nuptials, Whitney Port and Tim Rosenman headed to Fiji’s Royal Davui Island Resort, a remote paradise on a 10-acre island in the South Seas. The resort features 16 thatched villas with endless views of white sand and crystal clear water.

Victoria Beckham + David Beckham
For their 10th anniversary, Posh and Becks escaped to the Seychelles for an intimate getaway in the tropical paradise. Private, pristine beaches and an exclusive eco-friendly spa were just some of the luxuries the two enjoyed on their anniversarymoon.

Jessica Biel + Justin Timberlake
Following their super-secret and oh-so-romantic Italian wedding, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake embarked on an adventure to Tanzania, Africa for one wild honeymoon. The newlyweds stayed at the luxurious Singita Faru Faru Lodge in Grumeti, where they enjoyed the private reserve, hot air ballooning and four-by-four rides.

Blake Lively + Ryan Reynolds
After saying “I do” at a hush-hush wedding at South Carolina’s Boone Hall Plantation, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds flew to Africa for what they thought would be a romantic safari honeymoon. Unfortunately, the honeymoon was cut short when the couple had to fly to Canada so he could film his project, “The Captive.” But, to make up for their honeymoon that wasn’t, the duo celebrated their first anniversary in the Maldives.

Gabrielle Union + Dwayne Wade
Not one. Not two. But three dreamy destinations were on the itinerary for Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade’s epic honeymoon. First up, the newlyweds hit the idyllic beaches of the Maldives, frolicking in the crystal clear water. Then, they headed to the Serengeti Desert in Tanzania for an exotic safari before finally heading to the Seychelles for some serious R&R (romance and relaxation)!

Fergie + Josh Duhamel
Like some of the others on this list, one honeymoon destination wasn’t enough for Fergie and Josh. The newlyweds rented a private villa at the One & Only Reethi Rah resort in the Maldives, which features lush tropical lagoons and endless white sand beaches. The newlyweds finished their honeymoon festivities with a post-wedding trip in the Bahamas.

Katie Holmes + Tom Cruise
Though they’re no longer together, TomKat had a honeymoon as over-the-top as their romance (couch, anyone?). The couple spent part of their honeymoon sailing around the Maldives on a private yacht and allegedly dined at an underwater restaurant during their stay. Casual, right?

Nicole Kidman + Keith Urban
For $15,000 per night, you too can honeymoon like Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. The native Australians celebrated newlywed bliss at the positively breathtaking St. Regis Bora Bora. Their private villa featured a massive over-water suite, fully equipped with butler service and a private swimming pool.

Lauren Conrad + William Tell
After a super romantic wedding in her native Southern California, the former reality star and her new husband jetted off to Italy where the newlyweds ate their way through the country. “We did a tour of pizza, it was like pizza every night,” she told E! News.

Reese Witherspoon + Jim Toth
When you’re a celebrity, taking two honeymoons is no big deal, which is why Reese Witherspoon and her hubs, Jim Toth, did just that, planning a family-friendly honeymoon in Belize with her two children followed up with a romantic adults-only escape to Le Sirenuse on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.

Chrissy Tiegen + John Legend
Everyone’s favorite couple had pretty much everyone’s dream wedding: saying “I do” in Italy’s picturesque Lake Como. The dream with a honeymoon spent in the majestic town of Portofino on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where Chrissy tweeted she and John spent part of their honeymoon playing video games!

Leighton Meester + Adam Brody
The super-secretive couple kept details of their wedding on the down-low, but the couple reportedly spent four heavenly days at the St. Regis Punta Mita Resort in Mexico.

Nikki Reed + Ian Somerholder
When one beach paradise isn’t enough, why not visit three? That seems to be what was going through Nikki Reed and Ian Somerholder’s minds when they planned their sun-soaked honeymoon to Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum + Channing Tatum
Though Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Channing Tatum’s honeymoon in Bali sounds like a trip to paradise, food poisoning kept the couple from enjoying all of the incredible activities the island has to offer. But they were still able to get matching tattoos that read “side by side.”

Beyoncé + Jay Z
Bey and Jay’s honeymoon may come as a surprise to you. Instead of jetting off to some tropical paradise, the king and queen of music headed West to the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain for some R&R. The Arizona resort boasts a four-star, award-winning spa and luxe guests rooms with sweeping mountain views.

Mila Kunis + Ashton Kutcher
Following a relationship that spanned decades, the former That 70’s Show costars enjoyed a no-frills close-to-home honeymoon at Yosemite National Park with their sweet daughter in tow. Their low-key honeymoon is proof you don’t have to break the bank for a romantic getaway!

Kim Kardashian + Kanye West
How do you top an extravagant rehearsal dinner at Versailles followed by an absolute dream wedding at a Tuscan villa? With a honeymoon in Ireland, of course! The notoriously over-the-top couple relaxed at the Castlemartyr Resort, filling their days touring the Ballyhoura Mountains, picnicking and going to the movies. Yes, you read that right, the movies, where they saw X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Sofia Vergara + Joe Manganiello
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello said “I do” in a destination worthy of a honeymoon, Palm Beach’s The Breakers, but that didn’t stop them from heading to Parrot Cay in Turks and Caicos for their ultra-romantic honeymoon at the luxury private-island resort.

Megan Fox + Brian Austin
No passports were required for Megan Fox and Brian Austin’s romantic honeymoon at the Four Seasons Hualalai on Hawaii’s exclusive Kona Coast. According to E! News, the newlyweds spent a good part of their trip pampering themselves with the Romance Escape Package, that features soothing baths in a hinoki tub, aromatherapy wraps and 80-minute massages.

Jennifer Garner + Ben Affleck
Instead of jetting off to a new destination, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck decided to honeymoon at Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos, where they said “I do.” The low-key honeymoon was just what the couple needed, since Jennifer was four months pregnant at the time.

Eniko Parrish + Kevin Hart
Happily ever after started with a lavish Santa Barbara wedding and continued with the #HARTSinSTBARTHS for Eniko Parrish and Kevin Hart. The newlyweds checked in the Eden Rock Hotel & Villas, a luxury Caribbean resort surrounded by pristine white beaches.

European Garden-Inspired Wedding on the Eastern Shore

I’m typically not one to be at a loss for words but when this European garden-inspired wedding landed on my desk, I was left utterly speechless. It’s the design genius of Lauryn Prattes that made for incredible details like the bride’s favorite poem calligraphed on the table runner, not to mention floral works of art crafted by Sweet Root Village. Lisa Ziesing for Abby Jiu Photography told the story behind her lens and this glimpse is only the beginning.

European Garden Inspiration: Lauren has the most incredible sense of style and decisive nature, making her an absolute dream bride! From the start, Lauren knew she wanted a long sleeve Berta Bridal Gown, which set the tone for the rest of the planning. Bridesmaids were dressed in chic black long gowns and the gentlemen donned a classic black tux. The venue is a private estate nestled along the Wye River in Maryland. Florals featuring lisianthus, greens, and other white blooms lined the ceremony aisle and guests tossed white rose petals and olive leaves at the couple after they said: “I Do”.

Upon arrival to the Eastern Shore of Maryland wedding guests were welcomed with custom curated welcome boxes featuring treats from a few special places to the couple – a postcard welcome note featured dogwoods from Virginia where the couple had previously lived, pralines from Charleston, New Jersey blueberry jam homemade by the bride and her grandmother and of course crab chips, a Maryland favorite.

The ceremony took place outside overlooking the Wye River. Pre-ceremony cocktails allowed guests to mingle until ready for the ceremony to start. As the couple walked back up the aisle they were showered in rose petals and olive leaves. During cocktail hour guests sipped on signature cocktails named after the bride and grooms pets, such as Pippa’s Prosecco Punch featuring a silhouette cut out of the bride’s Persian cat Pippa.

In lieu of a tent top, guests dined al fresco under a vine-covered structure and antiqued bronze chandeliers. Signature cocktails were named after the couple’s two pets and featured a silhouette cutout of each. Lauren and Randy danced their first dance together to The Four Season’s, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” a tribute to the groom’s Jersey roots. Place settings featured Art Italica plates with gold matte flatware and menu’s tucked into vellum envelopes with each guest name delicately calligraphed and sealed with a custom wax seal of the local Wye Oak tree. Green vine and a flower also adorned each place setting. Dinner included fresh ingredients from local farms and featured a Chesapeake rockfish and Old Bay rubbed sirloin. Lauren wanted each guest to enjoy the food that reminded her of home.

The head table featured a white paper runner with Lauren’s favorite poem from Pablo Neruda calligraphed on each end. This was covered with a hand dyed silk runner from silk and willow. The cake was a lemon elderflower cake decorated with white bas relief and green sugar vines. Guests also indulged in a local favorite, Smith Island cake, a traditional cake in Maryland with a true love story history.

Then you can spend the day either shopping on Main Street or at Dionis, one of the many white, sandy beaches. No girl’s weekend is complete without a night of dancing, and for that, we recommend Chicken Box: a completely unpretentious roadhouse complete with live music that is contractually danceable! Pack your most glamorous, floppy sun hat and shades and let Nantucket do the rest!

Savannah, Georgia
This city is stunning, low-key and full of historical Southern charm. Added bonus: you can drink openly in public. Choose a place to stay that is centrally located in the historic downtown, such as The Gastonian, as it will make getting around a breeze. If you’re trying to avoid the touristy pub scene, grab a password from the hotel or a local and visit Mata Hari’s Speakeasy pub for some great ambiance, live music and absinthe cocktails! Of course, your squad will probably be in need of some comfort food at some point, and Savannah is not in short supply. After visiting Mrs. Wilkie’s Dining Room for fried chicken, grits, and mac and cheese, don’t feel pressure to plan the day! Savannah is a very walkable city, just make yourselves some cocktails to-go and admire the beautiful architecture and sights and sounds!

Galena, Illinois
Definitely a bit off the beaten path, but only a 2.5 hour drive from Chicago, Galena is a scenic small-town overlooking the Galena River, perfect if you and your bridal party are hoping for some R & R. The weather is ideal from May-June, with the humidity picking up in late July. Take a tour of a winery, go horseback riding, or relax at the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa, where they offer exclusive bachelorette packages with massages, facials, lunch and of course, champagne. Just getting out of the bustle of real life and wedding planning and experiencing the quiet stillness of this tiny town makes a trip so worth it. The views from the rolling hills of forest while you’re pampered will help each of you feel refreshed and ready to dive back to wedding planning!

Banff, Alberta
If each of you have passports, can fit in a car, and love adventure, then pack your hiking shoes and head to Banff! Only a four-hour drive from Seattle, this town is located in the middle of the Canadian Rockies and can only be described as jaw-dropping. You can have your pick of hikes: Grassi Lakes in Canmore, Emerald Lake, Tunnel Mountain Trail or go canoeing in Lake Louise or Bow Valley River. This entire trip will be packed with perfect Instagram photo-ops, and really, what more can you ask for of a bachelorette party? Finish off the trip with a session at the Banff Upper Hot Springs and some beers at one of the many local breweries.

Palm Springs
This desert town is hip and perfect for the ultra-chic bride and her crew to escape to. Palm Springs is forever sunny, and iconic, which makes for the perfect summer trip. Grab a villa for the gang at the Avalon Palm Springs, and for drinks, make your way to “Bar,” a relaxed spot with a backyard vibe and tasty hipster cocktails. One of the draws of Palm Springs is the vast array of vintage, consignment and estate sale shopping there is to be done. The prices and amazing pieces (ranging from YSL to Barney’s) are not to be missed, you may even find some great wedding accessories you didn’t know you needed!

Every Detail Is Perfection at This Annadel Estate Winery Wedding

Where do we begin with this Annadel Estate Winery wedding? The Bride’s phenomenal dress. The perfectly appointed tablescapes. The soft, organic florals. No matter which detail you look at, it’s sure to impress with thanks to MAP Events. Bret Cole Photography told the story of the day from behind her lens, and you can see it in the Vault.

From Bret Cole PhotographyI had the honor of photographing Matt and Megan’s wedding last spring. It was simply my favorite. Not only were they a delight to work with, but they also expressed a love and joy for each other that inspires me to continue doing what I do. The decor was elegant yet pulled in the outdoor setting with organic details such as wild grasses and leaves at each place setting, naturally stained wooden benches and farm tables, and potted herbs lining the aisle for the ceremony. Music and florals are a priority in my book, and they couldn’t have been more perfect. A big thank you to Melissa Panico of MAP Events for her attention to detail and timing. Matt and Megan’s wedding day was a truly wonderful story to capture.

An Elegant Waterfront Wedding That Embraces the Charm of Lake Tahoe

The first time this Bride and Groom laid eyes on their venue was the day before the wedding… and it went off without a hitch. This is a testament to both the crazy talented team of vendors and the stunning Lake Tahoe Estate where the festivities took place. How could you not fall in love with those dock views? And with elegant design by One Fine Day Events and loads of pretty images by Mike Larson, this celebration is a combo of cozy backyard party and elegant dinner in the woods; A.K.A. a total charmer.

From One Fine Day Events… The first time Jessica and Ryan saw their wedding venue was the day before the wedding! Phew, thankfully they loved it! As they couldn’t travel to Tahoe before their wedding, we planned everything for them and sent snippets of inspiration to give them a visual of the design we created. The property at this estate is pretty stunning, so we were very fortunate to start with such a beautiful backdrop. As they wanted the wedding to feel very “Tahoe”, we incorporated natural elements along with elegant details to dress up the space. This wedding was on the smaller side with a comfortable 40 guests. This guest count provided an intimate feel for guests, allowing them to really immerse themselves into Tahoe’s charm. The reception felt like a warm and cozy dinner party in someone’s backyard which was exactly what Jessica and Ryan were shooting for! All the little details definitely added a sweet touch to this couple’s big day. Fun fact, our very own groom took initiative and designed/created the leather name tags for each of their guests place cards. To top it off the couple added another sweet touch to their wedding. They incorporated family members prayer shawls within the flowers on the Chuppah they got married under. This ceremony overlooking Tahoe’s infamous lake was so much more than a special day for their family and friends. As event planner’s there’s nothing more magical than a lakefront wedding unfolding where we like to call home, Lake Tahoe.

A Sun-Kissed Garden Engagement

Monday mornings are tough – there’s no debating that. But when you’ve got a ridiculously cute lovefest shot by The Ganeys at your fingertips, the day automatically looks so much better. Take a browse through the images and get to know this sweet duo, Michelle and Colton.

From The GaneysMichelle and Colton are one of the sweetest couples! We met at Bok Tower for their sun-filled engagement session. Bok Tower Gardens is a hidden gem in Central Florida. These two were champs and totally rocked their session, even with the warm weather! They made each other laugh throughout the day with their fun-loving personalities!

Colton and Michelle met back in college. When Colton was ready to pop the question, he knew he had to plan something good. They were planning on heading out to California for a road trip after he passed the bar exam, so he determined this would be a great opportunity to propose (I mean, does it get any better than California?). While planning the trip, they were both looking forward to the stay in Big Sur the most.

It just so happens, that the day that Big Sur was on their schedule, there were crazy wild fires. As they left Santa Barbara, the hotel called and canceled their hotel room, as the fire was within 100 miles. Shortly after, the restaurant where they had reservations called with the same news. Of course, this was pretty much crushing Colton’s plans. He had even hired a photographer to capture the proposal.

The photographer was super helpful throughout the rest of the process. She dropped a pin and Colton and Michelle headed that way to watch the sun set. Michelle didn’t pause to ask questions as they drove through a gated community. Needless to say, the proposal was a success and they have beautiful images to remember that moment!

These two are planning their December wedding and looking forward to celebrating with all of their family and friends!

Crafting the Prettiest Guest Bedroom Meets Office Space on a Budget

Most people have that room that works double and triple duty from workspace to storage unit and sleeping accommodations and I write this as I sit in my home office/ guest suite/ laundry room so I know all too well. For interior designer, Courtney Davey of Tuft & Trim, that catchall space needed an overhaul and her vision was a bright and serene office meets guest bedroom designed on a budget. Awash in shades of blush and cozy details, we think she totally nailed it. Click here for the full tour.

Our guest bedroom doubles as my office so it was important for me to make it a space where I want to spend time in and find motivation and inspiration. Before, it had dark gray walls and busy patterns and with spring coming, I wanted something more calm, bright, and serene. The rest of our home reflects a combination of my husband and I’s taste, but I wanted this space to be solely a reflection of what I love.

It’s funny, I would have never thought of using pink, it really isn’t my favorite color. But at the time I was working on a project for a client where I was on the search for pinks, and I grew to love the muted blush tone. There’s a sense of elegance to it, a mature feminine quality.

I was shopping at home goods one day and I came across this floral canvas and fell in love the soft pastel tones. One thing led to another, and before you know it, I had a cart full of pillows, lamps, curtains, a blanket, etc, all revolving around this one painting. After taking the painting home, I decided painting the walls was a must. I brought home a handful of white samples and found one that blended perfectly with the painting.

Within a day, I painted the room myself and was thrilled with the outcome. I didn’t have a huge budget to work with, oh the possibilities of what I could have done if I had the money. I used all the furniture I had originally, most of which are hand me downs or antique store finds. But by updating the paint, wall decor, lamps, and bedding, the whole space was transformed. I also did some DIY projects like bleaching my previous bedding white instead of buying new bedding, covering a side table with fabric, and making my own wall art.

Above my desk area you’ll see a set of 9 antique french architectural prints, I found these on etsy and framed them myself. It’s little details like this that set a space apart and show uniqueness.

What I love most about this room is that it reflects my personality. One of my main priorities in all my designs is to try to achieve a space that encompasses one’s personality, and in order to do that, you have to get creative. Don’t ever let a low budget hold you back, try to think of how you can work with what you have, and make it better!

The Couple That Water Skis Together, Stays Together

This couple met when they were just 13 years old, water skiing at their family’s summer homes on Lake George. Fast forward several years later, when they went waterskiing together on the morning of their wedding and took their “getaway” photos in the very same boat they skied behind when they were teens. This Bride and Groom’s wedding is as cute as their love story, so dig right in to the beautiful photos by Sweetwater Portraits.

From the Groom… Our parents have summer houses down the street from one another on Lake George in the Adirondacks of New York, which lead to us meeting through a mutual friend when we were only 13 years old. We became fast friends, water-skiing and having all sorts of summer fun through the years. We were always smitten with one another (and may have even kissed on a wave runner in the middle of the lake when we were 15), but we lived 9 months out of the year in different parts of the State – I was in Albany and Janine on Long Island. As we went off to college, we drifted apart until we reconnected as adults in 2008. We began dating in the summer of 2010.

We dated for 5 years before the proposal. The first 2 years we lived apart from one another, with Janine working in NYC and me working in Albany. We then moved to Boston together in 2012. The proposal happened by the reflecting pool in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston. It was a complete surprise to Janine. I had orchestrated a nice dinner out and suggested we stroll beforehand by the reflecting pool. As we approached the fountain that adorns the east side of the pool’s plaza, I began reminiscing with Janine on all that had transpired for us over the years. I pulled out the first letter I had ever written Janine, reading it in its entirety before connecting the dots to our shared future ahead: “with eternity left, we haven’t a moment to spare.” I then got down on one knee. Janine exclaimed, “Is this really happening?!?” and the rest is history!

From the Bride… For the wedding, we did it all “ourselves” – no consultants or wedding planner, but we had a lot of help from family, friends, and vendors along the way. It was important to us to have our wedding be a unique expression of our relationship and our shared vision for what that special day should entail. We spent the better part of a year slowly developing ideas and executing some of our handcrafted projects. It was less arduous planning and more shared experience. The day of can itself be so fleeting that we were mindful to savor all the moments leading up to the big day. We were so pleased with each and every one of our vendors: our photographer Sweetwater Portraits, our cinematographer 21 Summit Studios, our caterer Mazzone Catering, our Tent and Logistics vendor Rain or Shine, and our band The New York Players. The trick is to sample their work, speak with them before committing, and get feedback from past clients. We went the extra mile up front to choose the right people so we could focus our attention elsewhere and not worry about that particular piece anymore. That ultimately meant more time for us to spend crafting the unique elements of our event and purely enjoying the moment on the wedding day.

I have a small business, Paper Planes Studio, designing and printing paper goods for special events, so I designed all the stationery. Having designed invitations, thank you cards, and day of paper goods for so many others, I had a blast designing my own and made sure they all reflected the unique aesthetic of our event by incorporating hand-penned gold script, crisp elegance, and a warm blush palette with some campy iconography.

After looking at a number of venues, we chose to get married at Chris’s family house on Lake George where it all began for us 20 years prior. It required some family and friends to travel in order to attend, but we made an entire weekend celebration out of it. We rented out an Adirondack cabin resort next to the house so people were a short trail walk away for festivities that extended from Friday night through Sunday afternoon.

I ended up buying something completely different from what I had in mind. I went dress shopping in October, put on a dress that was part of a trunk show, and fell in love. It was an ivory, stretch charmeuse, fit-to-flare gown with sheer corset detailing and hand beaded appliqué. It was so different yet so comfortable. I ended up wearing a veil for the ceremony that matched the sheer corset of the dress. I wore my grandmothers bracelet, a pair of diamond drop earrings, and gold wedges that had nice details to relate to the dress.

I had seven Bridesmaids, and I wanted them to be comfortable the day of, so I left them pick the cut they liked from a designer that had over 20 styles to choose from. They all wore the same color (light mint), and each dress was made from chiffon and looked light, airy, garden and party-esque.

There were four Groomsmen. They wore black tuxedos with braces, bow ties, and mint argyle socks. Chris wore black tuxedo pants, a white tailored dinner jacket with gold paisley braces, and a bowtie. He wore the same mint argyle socks as the Groomsmen and accessorized with gold cuff links from his deceased father to bring his spirit into the day. We all got ready on site the day of, but we brought out Chris’s late father’s British racing green 1952 Jaguar XK for pictures and some weekend fun.

We decided to do the ceremony right on the lawn between a large tree and a landscaped gazebo area on the property. The lawn slopes away to the water right behind where we were standing, so the backdrop was an unobstructed panoramic view of beautiful Lake George and the surrounding mountains that come to the water’s edge. The ceremony was designed to enhance and draw attention to the natural splendor that was already there, so we used natural wood folding chairs in a semi-circle setup with a few tasteful flower displays at the start of the aisle. We used dahlias, garden roses, garden spray roses, ranunculus, dusty miller, and seeded eucalyptus, which were placed atop sanded wooden stumps that we harvested from the woods of the property.

We had four long rows of farm tables that extended from the dance floor towards the water for the reception. To keep with our idea of accentuating the natural beauty vs. creating beauty from scratch, we kept the table decorations to carefully chosen essentials. We had custom sewn mint and gold polka dot napkins (thanks, Aunt Sue!), gold chargers, and hand-painted pots that housed a variety of succulents. The succulents provided some life to the tables, served as a place card, and then were taken home as favors at the end of the night.

Cocktail hour included some special appetizer stations on the deck with special seating areas and access to the bar spilling onto the lawn. It was important to us that the entirety of the property be experienced by guests, from the lake wall to the gazebo, to the small beach, to the dock, to the fire pit, etc. As such, we wanted to create a very comfortable, accessible feel to the event that did not corral people to one specific place. The special cocktail, coined the “Summer Love Smash,” contained bourbon, muddled peach, mint, ginger, simple syrup, and ginger ale – YUM! It was a winner.

The most important decision we made regarding the menu was to serve mains family style on our long wooden farm tables. It created a shared experience for everyone there. We had to work with the caterer on selection and the details of timing so it would come together just right, but it was worth it. It was such a treat to have all of our cherished people there, overhearing things like, “Can you pass the ratatouille?” We made sure to create a mindful moment by giving a short speech prior to service as an intro to breaking bread together.

We wanted to hang out with everyone post reception by the fire and under the stars. We built a large bonfire, set up a late night photo booth, cracked open some bottles of champagne, and had a blast. We did sneak off during the reception to take “getaway” photos in my waterski boat (which is the same boat we skied behind when we were 13).

A few other special details: We built and painted a custom photo booth backdrop that was inspired by Wes Anderson’s quirky, campy design. We accumulated decorations and props from garage sales and antique stores leading up to the wedding. We built a large “LOVE” marquee out of stained, cut plywood and metal flashing that served, along with some string lighting, as a marvelous photo backdrop for all the couples that night. My parents were undergoing a kitchen remodel on their cabin the year before the wedding, so we saved some old cabinet doors, window panes, etc. and leveraged them as day-of signs and a table seating key. We acquired some wood pieces used in animal hide tanning, affixed them to a downed tree branch, hand-painted directional elements onto them and used it as a signpost for guests directing to activities such as “Ceremony” and “Dinner and Dancing”. We also stripped and sanded down tree stumps from the woods to serve as additional seats around the fire pit during cocktail hour and the after party.

Our desire was to blend the best of a rustic Adirondack aesthetic with a glamorous 20s-esque vibe. One of our good friends coined the phrase “the Gatsbys go camping,” and we think that about sums it up!

Our advice to other Brides and Grooms is to manage your time, your budget, and your friends/family throughout the process. It’s important that you make this special day your own, so sit down with your partner to do a little dreaming together. Then figure out how to make it happen. A lot of couples get lost along the way because they don’t have a strategy for keeping each one of these pieces under control.

5 Ways To Plan For Your Marriage—Not Just Your Wedding

Planning a wedding is an exciting time for a bride. It’s easy to get caught up in planning the centerpieces, the layout of the reception, the details of the ceremony, and more. Once it’s all done at the end of the day, you’ve married your best friend. But don’t forget to spend time preparing for the actual marriage. After all, the most important moments will happen after you say “I do.”

Here are five things you and your fiancé should be doing to prepare for marriage.

Vocalize Your Expectations
As the wedding approaches, you and your fiancé should be having intentional conversations about what your expectations are for your marriage. If you never thought you’d take your fiancé’s last name but you forget to tell him, it could lead to an awkward situation later. Have conversations about your finances, where you’ll live, if and when you have kids, your short and long term goals, and everything in between. The more you communicate, the better.

Register For The Items You Need
While it’s SO fun (and easy) to get caught up registering for the décor that is pretty and makes your heart soar, you may end up with a lot of things you don’t need. So sure, you may love the polka dot throw pillows, but you also need that second set of flatware. Be honest about what you each have and first register for the things you truly need. Of course register for a few fun things, but make sure you don’t overlook the things you need as you merge homes (if you haven’t already).

Have A Flexible Mindset
When you get married, you have to be willing to give up some things. Marriage frequently requires compromise and the willingness to let go. You may have become accustomed to a weekly manicure but perhaps that becomes an expense to remove from your newlywed budget. As long as you’re willing to be flexible and make adjustments to your lifestyle (after all, you’re getting married—hello, huge adjustment), you’ll be on the right path.

Ask For Advice
Like all new things, it’s very helpful to ask married folks if they have any wise words about marriage. When you’re engaged, you’re most likely receiving a lot of advice about marriage and your wedding (warranted and non-warranted). That may turn you off to the idea of receiving advice in general, but honestly, if someone you trust is giving you solid advice on marriage, don’t take it for granted. Take things with a grain of salt, but look to those who have said “I do” before you. It can make all the difference.

Plan Date Nights
When you get married and are together almost every hour of every day, you forget about dates. Dates are a great way to spend intentional time together. Sure it’s nice at night to sit next to each other and read, or watch a movie, but setting aside quality time is important. It’s fun to plan cute ideas for dates you can go on, and restaurants you want to try out. Write a summer bucket list, and include things like going on weekend road trips, making watermelon sorbet (this in on my list) and going on bike rides! This is also a great way to explore your city if you’ve just moved somewhere new together. Overall, planning fun date ideas will help make it a priority in your relationship even after you’ve tied the knot.

When you’re wedding planning, it’s easy to pour your time and energy into planning the actual wedding day itself, but don’t forget about everything that comes after “I do!”

From the Bride… From the minute we got engaged, we knew we wanted to get married at Pippin Hill. We felt it was a perfect representation of the beauty of this special spot in the country where most of our guests had never been before. Fall is our favorite time in Charlottesville, so a September wedding was a no brainer for us. We wanted our wedding décor to have the same feel as the French countryside, with lush, overflowing flowers, woven baskets filled with lavender and herbs, and a rustic yet refined feel.

Working with Jacin was a true dream come true. She completely understood our vision for the wedding, and perfectly transformed the ideas in our head into reality. Working with her on the flowers was one of my favorite experiences from wedding planning, as flowers played such a big part in the décor for the day. I wanted a lush and loose bouquet, and the centerpieces to be low and overflowing flowers as well. We chose lots of champagne, cream, and blush-colored flowers, and the bridesmaids had pops of color in their bouquets. Jacin traveled to Nashville, TN to meet one weekend and pulled together the entire tablescape and flowers that we were going to use at my wedding. It was amazing to be able to see it all together in person and work with her on what I liked, and what I hoped to change. I loved watching her swap flowers in and out right in front of me. It was such an incredible interactive experience that I will never forget.

It was so fun to be able to get ready at Pippin Hill on the morning of our wedding, as we were able to watch Jacin and her team pull together the entire décor for the day. We could see all of the details that we had talked about and planned for the past year and a half come together, which was truly special. My bridesmaids and I had mimosas and were in a fun, celebratory mood all day long. It was a perfect getting-ready day!

We had absolutely stunning overflowing baskets of flowers that were at the entrance to the aisle for our ceremony. As for the ceremony, we wanted to stand at an altar, but did not want to block the incredible views of the mountains behind us—one of the main reasons why we chose to get married at Pippin Hill. Jacin found vintage screen doors that she then draped in flowers and greenery, which blended in beautifully with the natural beauty of our backdrop and made for an absolutely breathtaking altar.

Our wedding ceremony was both my and Ryan’s favorite time from the day. My dad walked me down the aisle to a string version of All I Want Is You by U2, his favorite band. Our dear friend from college officiated wonderfully, and he chose some very special poems and quotes to incorporate that resonated deeply with us. We had a ring warming ceremony, where we passed around our wedding bands through the guests for them to send their love and well wishes into. We also had one of the bridesmaids sing the song Halo with our string trio. It was so special to have her sing during our ceremony. While she was singing, we invited our immediate families to join us in lighting a unity candle, to symbolize the blending of our two families. Another one of my favorite parts of the ceremony was that two of my little nieces walked down the aisle as flower girls. They got a little diverted during their walk, which made everyone laugh, but they eventually made it down the aisle, cuter than ever. We wrote our own vows, and didn’t share them with each other beforehand, making it truly special hearing them for the first time at the ceremony. We followed the same pattern, so our vows would have a similar feel to them. We each said “I am here because…,” “I love you because…,” and “I promise to…” with three reasons for each. Ryan was pretty emotional during his vows, which ensured there was not a dry eye in the crowd.

Ryan loves wearing bowties, so we thought it would be fun to have a “trade your tie for a bow tie” bar at our cocktail hour. My mom worked for months on sewing bowties for every male at our wedding, and created lavender sachets for all of the women. They turned out so gorgeous (I still think she should open an Etsy shop!), and it was so fun seeing guests helping each other tie bowties at our cocktail hour. Jacin hung the bowties from vintage shutters, and placed bunches of lavender and other herbs in little vintage boxes and baskets all around them. She also lined the bars with beautiful hops, which added to the lush, green feeling of the day. We had a bluegrass band start the fun and merriment at our cocktail hour, and our signature cocktails were a hit. Everyone was able to watch the sun set behind the mountains during our cocktail hour—we couldn’t have timed it more perfectly.

Our centerpieces and tablescapes turned out perfectly. Jacin created the most gorgeous low and overflowing centerpieces with all of my favorite flowers, and surrounded them with tall candles, votive candles, little vases holding single stems of flowers, and herb pots. We chose vintage plates that had a variety of blue patterns on them to serve as charger plates, topped them with our hand torn menus and lavender sprigs, and used vintage silverware alongside them. We also had macarons serve as escort cards, with each guest’s name written on an individual macaron and placed in mini cake holders at each seat. The entire tablescape and place setting truly felt like we were back in France—I couldn’t have dreamed up something more gorgeous!

Our band, A Town A List, made sure our wedding reception was incredibly fun. Ryan and I danced to Zac Brown Band’s Loving You Easy, and I still get a rush of emotion every time I hear the song. Ryan and his mother invited all other mothers and sons to join them on the dance floor partway through their dance, which was so heartwarming to watch. Our band made sure no one left the dance floor all night, and we had an absolute blast. We ended the night with a sparkler sendoff while our band played The Saints Go Marching In. It was such a perfect day and night, we both wish we could relive it again.

We are so thankful for all of our vendors, who played such special roles in our planning and big day. I’ve already talked how much we appreciated Jacin and her whole team for planning the weekend of our dreams (which involved essentially two weddings!). She was such a joy to work with and has become a dear friend. She and her team made the whole weekend move seamlessly and perfectly, even playing the dual role of planner and florist. Our photographer, Ryan Ray, has provided us with some of the best memories of our special day, as our pictures are absolutely stunning and perfectly capture the feel from our special day (and Welcome Dinner). He was even right in the middle of the dance floor all night, missing nothing. Chelsea Petaja took our vision for paper goods and absolutely nailed it. I still cannot get over how beautiful our initiation packets were. Our videographer provided us with such a special video of our wedding, weaving in vintage film for parts of our day, that makes us cry every time we watch it. We cannot thank them enough!

It’s All Berry Hues and Smiles at This Elegant NOLA Wedding

This Bride is as pretty as can be with her elegant ballerina bun, her gorgeous berry hued bouquet by Kim Starr Wise Floral Events, and the delicate lace neckline of her beautiful gown. Lance Nicoll captured this NOLA wedding, including the absolutely adorable, joy-filled look of the Groom when he first saw his Bride. We’re in love and know you will be too, so scroll on!

From Lance Nicoll PhotographyFernanda and Farere hosted their wedding in New Orleans, Louisiana, centered around the unique and character filled French Quarter. The day began with a joyful first look in Armstrong Park. Family and friends met the lovely couple at the home of Farere’s parents for family formals. In the evening, the couple and wedding party gathered for a formal church wedding and then went to the main ballroom of the Westin at Canal Place. The couple’s entrance was filled with energy as they burst into the room, dancing with guests before taking their seats for their formal sit down dinner. Gold and blush accents were met with deep purple and dark gray tones for an untraditional but sophisticated color palette for the wedding day.
