See Why the California Coast is Perfect for an E-Sesh

There’s no denying that the East Coast offers so much in the weddings department, including gorg locations for engagement sessions. But the West Coast? I just cannot even with the golden light that graces the California coast. It’s incomparable. Kristina Adams captured that beauty within this e-sesh, along with the sweet love that radiates from these two.

From the Bride… When thinking about locations for our engagement session, Max and I were up for anything! When Kristina mentioned the Marin Headlands, we knew it would be perfect and completely trusted her vision! Max and I met when we were attending the Academy of Art University in San Francisco so this gorgeous part of the state holds a very special place in our heart. We both love simple, neutral colors and knew it wouldn’t compete with the gorgeous backdrop, so grays and tans were our go-to for our clothing choices. We’re getting married at a beautiful hometown ranch and plan on incorporating the same colors and flowy, understated style for the wedding day. My biggest piece of advice for any bride during their engagement season is to enjoy it – enjoy it with your family, enjoy it with your friends and enjoy it with each other! We’ve had so much fun planning and building things together for the wedding, it’s definitely brought us even closer together. This is such a fun time and try your best to not let the stress take over!

This Bride’s Hair Is Everything

All I want in life is for my hair to look like this Bride’s. Studio CG Salon created a unique and absolutely stunning ‘do that is as romantic as it is memorable. Scroll on to see the gorgeous bridal look as well as the rest of this classic al fresco wedding, planned by Jaime Johnson Events and captured by Rebecca Hollis Photography.

From the Bride… Mark and I met at the end of college, right before we moved to Seattle to start an internship at the same firm. We connected over our shared affinity for Mexican food and started doing a tour of all the best restaurants in Seattle. After almost a year of tacos and way too many spicy margaritas (still our favorite), we started dating. We fell in love going on many adventures (mostly planned by Mark, who is the most thoughtful and energetic person I have ever met), cooking, and jogging throughout Seattle. We got engaged after dating two and a half years when Mark planned an unbelievably thoughtful engagement centered around our love for wine and all of our dating milestones. It was in front of my family at Christmas, and the last clue before he got down on one knee was sharing the day he asked my dad’s permission for my hand in marriage. It was wonderful and such a memorable day!

Capturing the Spirit of Havana No Matter Where You Are

Highland Avenue invoked the color and essence of Havana for their recent party and you would swear it was all inspired by tile….really amazing balcony tile. It was a day to celebrate wedding industry greats and though it took place at the Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas it was nothing but Cuban vibes. Infused with the perfect tropical florals by Botanical No. 9, fun paper goods by Meldeen and Sophie Epton behind the camera, get inspired to throw your own Havana celebration no matter your local.

Adorned in gorgeous Romanesque Revival architecture, The Driskill Hotel is Austin’s oldest and most iconic hotel. Built in 1886, it has served as a welcoming haven for numerous past U. S. Presidents and historic events, and it continues to wow guests today. After two years of restorations to the hotel, the Driskill reached out to Highland Avenue Planning & Design to create an event to welcome Austin’s finest planners and industry friends back into the newly refreshed and gleaming space. Two beautiful balconies grace the hotel’s façade and serve as a welcome outdoor respite above the active streets of Austin below. The balcony tiles were one of the decorative touches updated during their recent renovations and they became the inspiration for the beautiful May luncheon. Lindsey Farrell from Highland Avenue took one look at the floors and knew they spoke perfectly to a modern Havana theme. The team at The Driskill agreed it was a great opportunity to showcase the historic hotel in a new and fresh light, and incorporating a colorful and tropical palate into the design would capture the environment perfectly. From Lindsey of Highland Avenue Events…The Driskill is such a special place and I was honored to bring their refreshed space to life for all to see! Prior to the event, we collaborated with Meldeen and Botanical No. 9 to create unique invitations that hinted to the theme with live tropical leaves and the hotel’s signature D applique. They were a festive touch that set the tone for the event. Once the day arrived, guests were greeted to the welcoming sounds of jazz as Big Night Quartet played through the historic halls. A modern take on the daiquiri was served from a custom bar graced with signage designed by Meldeen and draped in tropical blooms by Botanical no. 9. Festive bites of crispy plantains, jalapeno crab croquettes and watermelon mojito shooters were passed as guests roamed the revitalized space. Crisp tables of white, decked out with lush tropical greens and bright flowers welcomed guests onto the breezy balcony for lunch. Modern twisted ghost chairs and Havana styled china by Premiere Event Rentals set the stage for the summer-style three-course meal. My personal favorite touch of the day was the place setting. We knotted colorful napkins and folded them around the black, gold and white place settings as a nod to the scarves Cuban women often don in their hair. We used mini pineapples to add a thoughtful and festive touch and guests found their seats through sleek Spanish tiles beautifully created by Boarding School Collective.

From Callie Davis of Nancy Ray Photography… If I had to describe this wedding in one sentence, it would be “Southern hospitality meets joyful wedding celebration.”

Ashley and Brian incorporated all of their favorite things into their wedding day – backyard games, ice cream, bottled soda, miniature foods and gorgeous coral charm peonies. They were married by one of Brian’s closest friend and Ashley’s grandmother, and joyfully recessed while their guests waved ribbon wands.

From beginning to end, this wedding day was so much fun!

6 Wedding Cake Trends You’ll Want to Devour

There are a few wedding cake trends that are bringing back the traditional wedding dessert with a unique twist. Wedding cakes may seem like an extra expense you can skip, but they definitely add a burst of personality to your reception and can tie all of your decor together sweetly.

Allison Kuhn Photography

Geodes
Geode cakes are making a splash on Pinterest right now, and for good reason. Geode cakes use edible crystals to make your wedding dessert look rocky and rustic. They’re perfect for brides who want their wedding cake to be noticed in a big way. Create a work of art in your wedding colors and watch your guests lose their minds.

Katie Parra Photography

Watercolors
Try a watercolor cake. This stunning trend makes wedding cakes feel more like a work of art than a dessert. Go ombre with your wedding colors or match a shade found in your venue. Your cake will be all any guest can post about on Instagram.

High Tech
Add technology to your cake, like a GoPro. Since your cake is often on display for a while at your wedding, it’ll capture some sweet and silly moments you can reminisce over later. Getting as much footage as possible from your big day is a great way to relive your favorite moments over and over.

Brett Heidebrecht

Naked
Having a rustic wedding or more down-to-earth affair? Try a naked cake. Deconstructed cakes with little frosting and more fruit are pleasing to both the eye and the taste buds. They have a home cooked vibe to them and edible greenery can be added for even more of an old-fashioned feel. Alternate naked layers with iced layers for a modern look.

Kristin La Voie Photography

Metallics
Metallics aren’t just for your chargers or tabletops. They continue to be a hot wedding trend, and one easy way to embrace silver or gold is to wrap your cake in an edible metallic or add shiny details.

Candy
Are you a kid at heart? Have your baker decorate your cake with colorful candy, like M&Ms or Jelly Beans in your wedding colors. If your wedding has a bright, cheery vibe, a candy cake will go a long way in emphasizing your fun atmosphere.

How NOT To Drop Off the Radar When You Have Kids

There’s no doubt that having a baby is a life-changing event, but life-changing shouldn’t mean falling off the face of the Earth. Sure, you might not want to do much but soak up chubby baby snuggles in the first weeks and months (and sleep, whenever possible!), but don’t let your social life suffer when you gain the new title of mama or daddy. Here are a few ways to stay in the scene and rock the parenting gig at the same time.

Take Baby Out from Week One

This is something I’m so glad my husband and I did when our son was born. We ate out a few times, ran errands, went grocery shopping, all in the first week of our babe’s life. It really helped set the tone for how we are with him now—if we want to go to dinner and don’t have a sitter, we just bring him along. We may go earlier than we used to so we can get him to bed on time, which is actually sort of amazing because there’s no such thing as waiting for a table anymore!

Have Friends and Family Come to You

It’s inevitable that you simply won’t have as much time to make plans as you did before—but you still want to see all of your friends and family, right? Throw a party! You might be thinking hell no, that’s a ton of work! But think smarter, not harder my friends. Have everyone bring a dish and kindly ask for a bit of cleanup help before guests leave. Most people are willing to pitch in extra to help new parents, you probably won’t even have to ask!

Infant/Parent Classes

Mommy and me or Daddy and me classes are are a great way to get out of the house with baby and meet other parents with kiddos in your area. They’re a great way to help your babe learn new skills, from music class to swimming and even yoga.

Take Turns

YOU are a priority, yes you. It might not feel like it when all effort points toward those little ones, but you will truly be the best parent if you are your best self. That means taking turns with your partner for a day or night off! Whether you have been dying to get a pedicure or have dinner planned with besties—don’t forget that you still matter, too.

Accept the Invitation!

Big events might be a bit more challenging with a little one but that doesn’t mean you should send regrets for all the weddings, parties and fun shindigs. Life doesn’t stop when you have a kiddo—it evolves. My husband and I attended two weddings before our son was three months old (breast pump in tow and plenty of texts to grandma). But you know what? They were two of the best weddings we’ve ever been to and I’m so glad we attended.

Which Color Wedding Dress Would You Wear?

As the Bride, you’re bound to shine on your wedding day regardless of what you wear. But if you really want to make a statement? Opt for a hued number that busts out of the white mold. From green to ombré pink, we’re highlighting eight beauties that are anything but traditional. Which one would you wear?

Green

Hello, gorgeous green. We don’t see this hue very often in wedding fashion, making it all the more intriguing. This beauty from Gossamer has our jaws on the floor.

Blush

If you’re on the blush team, consider us your cheerleaders. Not far from the traditional white, this hue plays it safe but also amps up the romance like woah. Case in point? This breathtaking Monique Lhuillier number.

Gold

If you’re going for that red carpet look, embrace the gold my darlings.

Blue

Channel your inner Cinderella with a beautiful blue gown. This one from Unielle Couture has just the right amount of sparkle.

Black

For a moody vibe, black is your best friend. This lace-adorned style from Elizabeth Mackenzie Designs pairs beautifully with a foliage-layered bouquet.

Lavender

What’s more romantic than the sweet shade of Lavender? Think organic, casual weddings and Provençal backdrops.

Ombré Pink

If a touch of whimsy is what you’re after, opt for a dress like this ombré pink stunner.

Gray

Want the moody vibes without the full drama of black? Gray is your hue. This Carol Hannah beauty stopped us in our tracks.

How to Incorporate Multiple Religious Traditions as a Modern Couple

Fusing two (or more) faiths into one marriage can be tricky – and emotional. Planning a wedding that will celebrate multiple traditions can be helpful, though, because it will start conversations about how you plan to prioritize your faith and what that will look like in your own marriage.

Kesley Combe Photography

If you’re planning an interfaith wedding, here are some things to consider:

Remember the common denominator
The transformative power of love weaves through all religions and cultures. So no matter which you claim, you will be strengthened by the love you share for each other. Keep that top of mind as you’re beginning the planning process. At the end of the day, love is the reason you said, “yes!”

Stick to what YOU want
Because religion is so personal, you could hear a LOT of differing opinions from family and friends. It’s easy to get weighed down by the pressure of pleasing all the people who mean so much to you. The first step to any interfaith wedding: decide what YOU want and stick to it. While planning your wedding, the only people you need to please are you and your fiancé.

Mademoiselle Fiona

But have an honest conversation with your parents
It’s never a good idea to blindside your parents at your wedding. If you think they’ll be surprised by, say, your recent conversion to Catholicism. Or if they never knew your boyfriend was Buddhist, you should probably give them a heads up before the monk chants his blessing. Managing their expectations on the front end will help make the day happier for everyone – and avoid awkward conversations during the reception.

Consider one fusion ceremony
Depending on your venue, you might consider incorporating both traditions into one ceremony. This could work for couples who share similar faiths (a Catholic priest giving a blessing during a Protestant wedding ceremony) or a couple who wants to blend two different religions (exchanging mangalya -a Hindu wedding necklace – and wedding rings). Fusing multiple faith traditions – or even officiants – into one ceremony can be a beautiful way for a couple to show compromise in their relationship.

Mustard Seed Photography

Or plan two separate ceremonies
If you’ve always dreamed of a traditional ceremony, there’s no reason you shouldn’t plan one! This is a popular choice for couples whose religions are key to both their identities (or international families). Plan two ceremonies – one to honor each faith or culture. Some couples choose to have both on the same day, or spread them out over two days or two countries! Besides, who doesn’t love another celebration?

Consider a destination wedding
Destination weddings are popular for interfaith ceremonies because you can avoid potential issues with religious venues. Some houses of worship do not allow officiants or scripture readings from other religions. Rather than risk disrespecting anyone’s hometown priest or pastor, couples jet set to a beautiful location to have a ceremony all their own.

Michelle Lange Photography

Pick an officiant
You could choose one religious leader, a few religious leaders, or a close friend. Talk with your officiant about the message you want shared during your ceremony. If you go with one, you might want to highlight the similarities – like love and peace – your two faiths share. If you’re looking for two messages – or two languages – multiple officiants could be the way to go.

Honor each culture
Brainstorm a few ways to pay respect to each faith. Consider traditional dress – whether that’s a white wedding dress or a reflection of your cultural background. Research wedding traditions, like signing the ketubah, a henna party, or sapthapadi (seven steps around the fire). And incorporate music that reflects each religious style.

Lacie Hansen

Select scripture, poetry, or inspirational reading
Read a scripture passage, a blessing, a hymn, or a poem from each faith. Select a common theme – like love – and find inspirational writing from, say, the Bible and the Qur’an to support it. Sharing these commonalities can help bond weddings guests from both sides of the aisle – and the faith.

Set expectations with your wedding planner, officiant, wedding band, etc.
Make sure your wedding planner, emcee, officiant – anyone responsible for elements of your wedding – knows exactly what you want (and don’t want) on your big day. That way, if well-intentioned guests request specific traditions – like the Horah for a Jewish wedding reception – your planner or DJ will know how to handle it. You might be down, or you might decide in advance you want to skip certain religious traditions. Communicate well ahead of time if you’ll have any specific dietary requests – like a kosher menu or a hard-to-find ingredient. Setting expectations will help avoid any potential conflict around interfaith celebrations.

Planning a wedding is no small feat. And adding multiple faiths to the ceremony can be a big challenge. As long as respect for each other’s faith is your foundation, you’re in a good place to start having conversations around how to incorporate both into your ceremony. No matter the religion – everyone can agree that love and family are worth celebrating!

This Couple Found The Prettiest E-Sesh Backdrop Ever

Santa Barbara held a dear place in Alicia and Andrew’s hearts so they knew it had to be the backdrop of their engagement session. They headed to the La Purísima Mission State Historic Park for some historic charm, not to mention the mission’s striking pink walls, and I Heart My Groom captured their love behind the camera. Head to the gallery for even more and consider your Saturday off to a perfect start.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/186179198 600 338]

From the couple… Andrew and I first met at a beach famously known by the locals, as “Hammonds Beach” in Montecito, CA. We arrived separately, but with mutual friends. After being introduced, we instantly hit it off and spent most of the afternoon talking and laughing. As the sun was setting, we walked back to our cars along the train tracks, where Andrew got up the nerve to ask for my phone number before parting ways. A few weeks went by before fate took over and we happened to be in the same local pub on Andrew’s most beloved and celebrated holiday, St. Patricks Day! Fast forward and we haven’t been apart for almost 5 years! Andrew and I are both part Irish and we felt it only fitting to add a very special Irish Blessing known as, “May the Road Rise up to Meet You” as the closing in our wedding day vows. Andrew, who has lived in Santa Barbara since a young child and I having lived here since attending college at UC Santa Barbara, both consider this amazing and stunning town our forever home! We hope to raise a family here someday soon.

Andrew and I both share some of our fondest memories in Santa Barbara, so it was only fitting that we had our engagement shoot in locations that meant something to us, but also were unique and stood out from other sites. After some thought, two places were decided as the perfect backdrop for our engagement shoot, The La Purisima Mission and Knapps Castle. La Purisima Mission borders the Santa Maria River and the Gaviota coast line covered in old adobe pink walls with a true Spanish flair that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It was actually where I did my 4th grade California mission project, never dreaming that at 10 years old, I would be shooting my engagement photos and getting married a few miles away. Andrew also spent time there, riding horses around the mission property as a child with his aunt. It was a meaningful spot that is rich in history and we had a fun day, enjoying a packed picnic lunch and capturing some amazing light!

Knapps Castle was the second location in Santa Barbara and was built in the 1940’s before burning down in a forest fire. What remains today are these incredible brick bones of a house once lived, that really showcase the dramatic arches and left over pieces of what was once a fire place with some incredible and dramatic views. The Santa Barbara valley in the background and gorgeous sunsets, really takes your breath away at times. We often take our dogs to walk around the mansion’s ruins. There is a rope swing in a near by tree and a great place to bring a blanket and relax together. We especially enjoyed the thrill, as we ventured out to the far corners of the tallest parts of the mansion to get that perfect sunset shot! It was really exciting to be that high above the ground, hand-in-hand!

Our Save the Date video was sent out to our guests and used on our wedding website which included amazing calligraphy design by one of my bridesmaids which showcased our date and names for all our guests to watch over and over again! We loved every minute of our photo shoot and we hope you do too.

Andrew and Alicia were married at Apple Creek Ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley on June 24th, 2017 choosing all local vendors who we had a personal connection with. We celebrated into the night surrounded by good friends, loving family, amazing food, incredible live music, and local wines! #happilyevergerbac

Which of These Color Combos Fits Your Home Style Best?

There are many factors that come into play when choosing a design style for your home, but quite possibly the most powerful is color. When paired up just right, the perfect hue combos can define any space—from a blue and white casual coastal abode to a navy and pink trad-mod home. So, which one of the combos below fit your style best?

Blue + White

One of the most popular combos featured in our home archives, blue and white is a versatile pairing that lends itself to almost any design style, from coastal to modern. For a fresh twist, incorporate greenery!

Black + Gray

Most often we see this combo featured in industrial style homes but really, it can be woven into any design style! Avoid a too-moody vibe by choosing soft grays as wall or cabinet color and layer in the black with lighting and accessories like shown here.

Navy + Pink

If you gravitate toward this combo, you’re a little bit classic and a little bit modern. Keep your space feeling fresh and airy with loads of white. Gold or brass details are a perfect match for this combo, too!

Blush + White

This one’s for the dreamers and lovers. Often found in boho and modern styles, blush and white radiates a whimsical vibe that works for a city apartment graced in glamour or a sweet beach house, and beyond.

Gray, White + Gold

If you love all things minimal and organic, this is your go-to combo. It’s especially flattering in kitchens, but this pairing can work throughout an entire home. Layer in texture, greenery and interesting pieces (like these fun barstools!) to avoid a bland look.

Tuscan-Inspired Wedding Accented With Organic Greenery

Inspired by their venue’s Tuscan vibe, this couple chose to bring a taste of Italy to their West Coast wedding day. They brought on some of the best of the best, including Lilla BelloSPARK Creative EventsCasa de Perrin, La Tavola and Percy Sales Events to make the magic happen and Caroline Tran captured every detail behind her lens. Think effortless romance with organic greenery around every corner for an entire gallery of moments you don’t want to miss.

The wedding design was inspired by Sunstone Villa itself. Our bride wanted to stay true to the colors, design and feel of the Tuscan inspired mansion. Additionally, she wanted to make sure to bring in touches of Santa Ynez, California’s wine valley to the design as well.

The color palette was very classic in hues of whites, ivories and bright greens with touches of gold which brought out the sunstone color of the building. Our bride wanted to stick to the vintage classic look of the villa. To achieve this we brought in elements that could be found in the countryside of Tuscany in our design elements from table top to furnishings.

The tables were adorned with crisp white linen tablecloths, hemstitched napkins, brass candlesticks, antiques inspired dishes, hand forged but modern looking utensils in gold to give it an updated look. The floral centerpieces looked like they were plucked from a painting by Cezanne. The centerpieces incorporated lush florals in garden roses and ranunculus with mixed textural foliages. Lemon leaves and olive branches overflowed from the centerpieces and created a dream runner down the feasting tables where vintage brass candlesticks were incorporated to give each table a grand look. The menu incorporated very rustic and modern flavors from liver pate crostinis, to short ribs with kimchi. Every aspect of the evening was curated to make sure that the journey from start to finish was enjoyed by all.

5 Unexpected Color Palettes for Fall Weddings

As soon as the leaves start to change colors this year, you’ll start getting excited — and not just because it’s time for fall. It’s fall wedding season!

We’ve put together the following five crisp color combinations to make your fall wedding feel as fresh and exciting as the season itself.

Peter Bohler

Peach and Green

It’s a bit of a myth that your fall wedding can’t incorporate these lighter, more romantic pastel colors. But a softer peachy color next to a sage green — and lighter versions of both of those shades, too — are much easier on the eye. Peach is the perfect happy medium: it will bring out the orange hues you tend to associate with the season without being too cliché or bright.

Weddings By Nicola and Glen

Navy and Burnt Orange

Rather than pairing classic navy with the fiery hue of changing leaves, try something a bit darker. You’ll be surprised just how sophisticated the color looks when juxtaposed with the dark blue hue. If you imagine a super elegant and romantic fall wedding, there’s plenty you can do to ensure the combination is as fancy as a black-tie affair.

For one, put your bridesmaids in floor-length dresses: they’ll be equal parts warm and glamorous. A fancy shrug will up the fashion factor, too. You can pair it will all the other trappings of a traditional black-tie extravaganza: cocktail hour, live music… the list goes on.

Light and Dark Purples

Switching gears from traditional tones of fall, you might also consider a purple-centric color palette. The hue is one that works year-round: you won’t be wanting for bridesmaids dress options in these colors. Pairing a soft lilac with a deeper eggplant will give you the drama, but retains some of the girly-ness you might miss if you choose a color scheme that’s directly inspired by fall.

Cream, Maroon and Gold

Maroon is another example of a subdued fall hue, and cream and gold just make the color of love a bit more romantic. By sneaking a little bit of pink in there, too — especially when putting together your centerpieces — you can make your scheme fall-inspired and romantic.

Jen Rodriguez Photography

Mustard Yellow and Hunter Green

Finally, this warm combination screams “fall wedding” and ushers in some seriously earthy, rustic vibes. This is the type of color scheme that would do well with, say, a barn reception: twinkle lights and candles will cast a warm glow over colors that make us feel cozy.

A loose updo and lace gown would paint the perfect backdrop for a warm yellow bouquet. A fall wedding brings with it a wealth of inspiration as far as color, décor and location go.

The above are just five of the many examples of how to make your fall wedding feel warm, elegant or out of the ordinary. Choose the one that suits your dream day best and you’ll be walking down the aisle with a smile on your face, no matter what.

An Arranged Meeting by the Groom’s Parents Led to This Modern Romance

This gorgeous couple calls their love story the “modern day arranged marriage,” having fallen in love after being set up by the Groom’s parents! Mom and Dad know best, am I right? Their wedding planned by Blush and Whim is elegant, romantic, and almost as stunning as the couple themselves, with yummy blush florals arranged by Munster Rose and Argentinian flair to represent the Groom’s heritage. Captured by Maison Meredith Photography, this is one of those galleries you can spend all day in.

Glamorous

From the Bride… Looking back at how we met brings nothing but a huge smile to my face. It has been a joke that it could be considered the “modern day” arranged marriage. In June 2013, D’s parents were in from out-of-town for his graduation from residency. They went into a cell phone store to purchase a new cell phone for him, and upon walking into a busy store where they were put on a waiting list, they tell me that they “spotted a cute blonde representative and adamantly asked to work with her.” D, who wasn’t with them at the time, was then called by his father, who told him that he needed to come get his phone himself! I was blushing the entire interaction as D’s Argentinean accent and smooth comebacks had me fumbling around and losing my focus on my work. He had a fresh summer tan – and to think, a sexy and young international doctor! I was twitterpated. Right before D left, he took a business card out of his pocket, wrote down his cell phone number, and gave it to me saying, “If you are interested, you are more than welcome to join us for dinner tonight. After all, you have already met the parents, so the hardest part is already over!”

Fast forward to June 2016, and I was VERY ready to marry this man. I have worked in the wedding industry in the past and dreamt about finally being a Bride – I was so excited and thrilled to be even talking about marriage with D. We had gone wedding venue shopping over the course of the spring, but D had expressed (to great lengths) that we would most likely not be able to get engaged until the end of the year. So I slowed down my efforts and thought it strange that he wanted – rather, insisted – we visit for a second time our top venue choice: The Van Dusen Mansion. So, celebrating our 3 year dating anniversary, we had plans to go to dinner and a play right after our tour at the Mansion. While in an upper room in the Mansion, D created a ruse that gave him an excuse to leave me in the room, asking me to meet him downstairs in the courtyard when I was finished viewing the upstairs of the Mansion. When I walked into the courtyard a few minutes later, D was standing in the middle (shaking and looking incredibly sweet) waiting for me. It was there, with a live string quartet playing in the background, that he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. It was a fairytale proposal and one of my most treasured memories! He later surprised me with an engagement gift – he had booked the Mansion for our wedding the following year!

For the wedding, we knew we wanted it to be intimate, unique, and relaxing. Since I had worked in the industry, I knew how stressful wedding days can become with keeping to a tight timeline and ensuring everyone has what they need and is happy, all while trying to have a great time yourself and soak in every moment. We wanted to shower those we loved with a beautiful event where they can sit back, relax, and enjoy!

We are very nontraditional, so with each element of the wedding we asked ourselves, “Why are we doing this?” and “What meaning does it bring to us?” We decided that things such as a formal cake cutting and bouquet and garter toss were not elements of a wedding that we found personal meaning in, so we nixed them from the agenda. We decided to not have a bridal party so as to not add pressure on our close friends. I invited my closest gals to be with me throughout the entire day, but they had no responsibilities other than to have fun and keep pouring the champagne.

But in lieu of eliminating some of those traditions, we decided to add things that reflected our personalities and backgrounds, like tying in special aspects of D’s Argentinean heritage. For favors, we had cookies ordered and flown in from Argentina called alfajores, and in our programs, we added translations in Spanish. For our unity activity, we chose to combine colored glass crystals that was later made into sculpture that will be a keepsake in our home. D and I both have a love for the dramatic, so when I proposed that he change from his black tuxedo jacket to a white dinner jacket going into dinner hour, he immediately jumped on the idea. He. Looked. So. Good. The sweetheart table that we sat at gave us a perfect opportunity to just be together for a short time and take in the scene around us. It was so beautiful.

To be real though, throughout the planning process, it was easy for me to get so immersed and focused on the pretty details of the day that it often clouded the real reason we were doing it all. I constantly had to step back and realign my focus. Not only for my heart to be right, but also for our bank account! Looking back, it was nothing short of magical. But the reason it was so magical was not because of the incredible bouquet, Jimmy Choo shoes, or beautiful venue, it was because I got to marry my best friend and love. Like, wow! There is nothing short of magic to that.

The Views From This Wedding in Bali Can’t Be Beat!

My hubs and I traveled to Bali earlier this year, and it quickly cemented itself as one of our all-time favorite destinations – the photos of this classic Bali beauty planned by Tirtha Bridal will show you why. The ocean views were incredible from the glass chapel ceremony and possibly even better during the gorgeous sunset at the al fresco reception atop a cliff. See more of the picturesque day, from the morning’s traditional tea ceremony to the firework finale, captured by Stepan Vrzala in the Vault.

From Stepan VrzalaStella and Sherman chose the gorgeous beachside cliffs of Uluwatu, Bali as the backdrop for their wedding. The day began with the tradition of playful “gate crashing” games at the Indigo Villa followed by a tea ceremony with their parents at Tirtha Luhur. The party then moved to Tirtha Uluwatu for the wedding ceremony in an elegant glass chapel on the infinity pool overlooking the ocean. The reception was held at breezy cliffside venue Tirtha Luhur, which created a beautiful setting to capture photos of the Bride and Groom cutting their wedding cake and enjoying the sunset. This tranquil scene was followed by an exciting grand entrance as Stella and Sherman walked alongside the pool that was set alight with fireworks and floating candles. They joined the dinner reception in the softly lit garden, and the guests celebrated the beautiful couple under the stars.

From Bride… I’m just really happy that everything turned out great. We’ve been planning it for around a year, and it was everything I always dreamed my perfect wedding would be. We really can’t believe how blessed we were – we’ve learned the sunset is rarely that visible. Everyone was amazingly helpful, from our planner at Thirtha to Stepan and almost everyone involved.
