Intimate and Wildly Romantic Wedding in Maui’s Upcountry

Based in the U.S. with family back in China, Hawaii felt like the perfect middle point for Olive and Dylan’s wedding. They wanted a day that exuded classic elegance so they brought on Opihi Love Wedding & Events to make it all happen. Olive looked radiant in her Pronovias gown paired with a juliet cap veil and the amazing Rebecca Arthurs photographed each and every moment.

From the photographer… Olive & Dylan experienced sweet first love in high school, struggled with a long distance relationship in college, had a heartbroken break-up and miraculous reunion in the USA far away from their homeland. With their parents still living in China, they decided Hawaii was the perfect in-between place to cement their love story and say their vows underneath the beautiful trees at Ka Hale Olinda.

It was my joy to document this intimate celebration as Olive & Dylan fully expressed their timeless love and respect for each other that ran beneath all the ups and downs of their years together. Ever since she was a little girl, Olive knew what her wedding dress would look: a vintage style lace gown with a layered mermaid tail. Very elegant, very classical. So she wanted the wedding design inspirations to come from her dress. To be pure and simple, yet with great taste. I think Melissa with Opihi Love and Bella Bloom pulled it off perfectly!

Having a City Wedding? Check Out this Urban Chic Brooklyn Fete.

This fete from Bashful Captures is the definition of urban chic. From the greenery-adorned brick backdrops and twinkling lights overhead to the Bride in her modern strapless Carolina Herrera dress and her bridesmaids in black, it’s the perfect blueprint if you’re planning your Big Day bash in the city.

From Bashful CapturesSuzie and Jiwon started their wedding day at The William Vale, with the most gorgeous NYC skyline view. Their wedding party were all dressed in black. The bridesmaids wore all different black dresses, which looked super chic. Suzie’s simple Caroline Herrera dress was accessorized by her beautiful blue earrings. The hotel was just a few minutes away from their venue, so we walked around the neighborhood to take some pictures with all the fun backdrops in the area. Even on the hot summer day, Suzie and Jiwon were all smiles and enjoyed every moment of their special day. Their beautiful ceremony took place at the new and gorgeous Dobbin St. In Brooklyn. Upon arrival at Dobbin St., guests are welcomed by the venue’s dramatically fun cobalt blue wall. You then proceed through the elegantly black and white tiled foyer, that leads to the gorgeous open space where the awesome party would later take place. But before they kicked off the dancing and partying, Suzie and Jiwon had their heartfelt ceremony on the rooftop surrounded by their loved ones. The wedding decor reflected the couples urban and chic style throughout their wedding.

Unique Ring Shots To Consider For Your Engagement Photos

While there are many steps in the wedding planning process that cause brides and grooms to grin from ear to ear, there are few things as magical as a well thought out engagement session and the resulting photographs.

Greg Finck Photography

Here are five unique ways to snap your ring that highlight just how special it is to your love story.

Toast To Your Happiness
Being engaged means many months of celebratory cheers and your engagement photo session is the ideal time to capture one of those intimate toasts on camera. So, pop the bubbles, clink your glasses and give each other a smooch! Your interactions and loving gazes make for a naturally epic back drop, with a stellar ring shot in the foreground as you hold your champagne glass.

Create A Sense of Adventure
You and your future hubby just got engaged and are, therefore, beginning the adventure of a lifetime! The two of you are going places and an action shot is both representative of your fun-loving, adventurous spirits and a great way to showcase your new gem in a way that feels completely unposed or staged. So, take your love by the hand and lead him full speed ahead into your new life while your photographer snaps from behind.

Make A Promise
Most of us remember making pinky promises to our best friends as little girls, but now it’s time to make one with your soon-to-be groom! Linking little fingers for a photo is a special way to show off your ring, while using a sweet tradition that symbolizes the commitment you are getting ready to make to one another. Your photographer can get a close-up shot of just your interlocked fingers or zoom out a bit and capture your fiancé kissing your hand to seal the deal.

Alisa Ferris

Get Up Close and Personal
What is the key to a sweet as can be ring shot, you ask? Don’t be afraid to love on each other! Quite often, the most romantic ring shots don’t end up being the ones with the perfect pose, but rather an up close shot of a more naturally occurring moment. So, wrap your arms around your husband-to-be without worrying about having your hands perfectly placed on his back or resting on his shoulders. Walk arm-in-arm or canoodle with your hand holding onto him for a shot of your ring that is rooted in love.

Rebecca Yale Photography

Set The Scene
Whether it is a little table tucked away in your favorite coffee shop or a corner booth in your go-to pub, there is probably a secret spot that is special to you and your fiancé that is perfect for a photo session. Not only will you feel super comfortable in such a familiar “happy place,” the scene you create while cozying up together can produce surprisingly adorable ring shots. While your hands are wrapped around your mug of coffee or pint of beer, your photographer can snap the two of you mid-conversation, close enough to highlight your ring in a uniquely you environment.

As a general rule of thumb always remember that the best shots are the happiest shots, the photos in which you and yours are giving off all those lovestruck vibes. So, worry less about the pose and more about the joy and you and your ring are sure to shine through. Happy picture taking!

How to Talk to Your BF About Engagement Rings

Us girls have mastered the art of being subtle. This spring, I left three engagement ring books from some of my favorite jewelers sitting conveniently on the table next to “his spot” on the couch. I even marked all my favorites with bright little post-it flags! After FOUR MONTHS, he hadn’t so much as glanced in their direction. Actually, I think he used one as a coaster once.

Carmen Santorelli Photography

The problem is subtlety often doesn’t work when it comes to the “ring expectations” conversation. Guys are direct. Their thought process is simple and straightforward about this major purchase.

So if you’re looking to have a productive conversation with your boyfriend about rings, it’s time to master the “Rules of Engagement.”

Timing is Everything
Follow his lead. If he’s confident talking about your future marriage, then he’ll probably be comfortable talking about engagement rings.

Next, pick a time when you’re both happy, relaxed and feeling loved. Don’t approach the topic for the first time when you’re angry, emotional, tired, (or, in my case, hungry). You’ll both want to associate this moment with happy, excited feelings – not tears or stress. A positive conversation opens the door for future productive chats about what you want. A negative conversation will make him avoid the topic like the plague.

Carolina Lima Photography

Give Him Credit
It’s his job to get your ring. He can handle this! Even if you think you could do a better job (and you might be right!), at the end of the day, he’s the one who has to get down on one knee. And that’s not an easy job either. If you’d like him to do that willingly, don’t belittle him.

“You know me so well! I know I’ll love whatever you pick.” Start the conversation with a compliment. Obviously, he has great taste – he chose you! Make sure he knows you trust him – and his judgement – when it comes to this major purchase. “You’re so great at researching, I’m sure you’re all over this.” By encouraging his abilities, you’re setting him up for success.

Thecablookfotolab

Offer Examples
Now that he knows you trust him and his ability to do the job, offer your assistance with the specifics.

“I’ve been saving pictures of some rings I really like. Do you want to see them?” If your boyfriend is like most guys, he’ll be interested in a few pictures. Pick a few of your favorites and tell him why. “I love the round center diamond with a thin, simple band. It’s so classic, and all the attention is in one place.” Keep your description simple and straightforward. “I really like this cushion cut with a halo. It makes the center stone look so much bigger!”

As conversations continue, you both can dive into more specifics. Don’t bring up the prong count or the virtues of platinum-vs-white-gold on the first run.

The examples you show him will also help him understand your expectations for size and sparkle.

Ask His Opinion
Think about how important you feel when your boyfriend asks your opinion on something that matters to him. Setting aside for a minute that fact that he’s paying, he might also surprise you with an idea you never considered but absolutely love.

For instance, I knew the exact engagement ring I wanted. I’d marked it in my ring book, saved pictures on my phone, and shared with all my friends. But when I showed my boyfriend and asked what he thought, he didn’t think it was right for me. Originally, I asked his opinion to check the box, but it turned out he knew what I’d like better than I did! He surprised me with a trip to my favorite jeweler (BEST decision ever) to try them on in person. When I compared my first dream ring with a few my boyfriend picked out, I realized he was right! The ones he chose perfectly fit my style and personality.

His opinion will also help manage your expectations. Asking what he thinks gives him the opportunity to communicate whether what you’ve shown him fits into his plan (does he want to use a family ring?) and budget.

Jeremiah and Rachel Photography

Respond Honestly and Respectfully
A respectful attitude is key. You’d never want to make your man feel ashamed of his taste – or his budget. “Demanding” isn’t a good look on anyone. It’s okay to have priorities, though!

All boyfriends have budgets. But if you’d rather have a bigger diamond than, say, a perfect stone, you can be honest with him about that. If there’s an aspect that means most to you, he’ll appreciate knowing before shopping.

Don’t Badger
You’ll have to gauge his interest here. Most men do NOT like to be asked every day about the status of your engagement ring. He probably doesn’t want weekly updates with your opinion on the potential design. And he definitely can’t handle you pressuring him about a timeline after every engagement post on social media.

Wait for him to bring it up again. Then repeat step 1 – only discuss when you’re in a happy moment. When the time comes, he’ll probably have a long list of questions for you.

Remember the Bottom Line
Priority check: this ring is a symbol of something bigger – your love and commitment to a life together. While it’s beautiful, the engagement ring is not the end-all-be-all for your engagement. Keeping that in mind will help keep your love for each other front and center during this exciting time!

In the meantime, feel free to “like,” pin, save, share, and tag all the fabulous rings you love! I’m right there with you, sister!

An Autumn Garden Wedding With a Touch of Vintage Charm

As a girl who proclaims fall her favorite season, this wedding from Sylvie Gil is making me giddy for all the seasonal goodness that’s right around the corner. Planned in the hands of Modern Sequins, James and Alison’s nuptials include classic garden party romance with autumn-inspired details and a touch of vintage charm. See our favorite details like the typewriter guestbook station all waiting right here!

From the bride… James and I got married as a result of a good old-fashioned setup.  His parents were hosting a party for some mutual friends and my parents were in attendance.  My mom met James that night and decided we needed to meet given that we were both alumni of USC.  Mother knows best, as they say.  A few weeks later, James reached out to me via email, and little did he know his email would be featured on our save the date a year and a half later.  We both had no idea what to expect for that first date, but we ended up chatting for four hours straight until we were ushered out of the restaurant at closing, and from that moment on we became inseparable.

A little over a year into our relationship, James took me to Carmel-by-the-Sea for the weekend.  On our first morning, James suggested we grab a coffee and take a walk down on the beach.  One minute I was checking out the waves crashing and the next minute he was down on one knee.  It was all so sweet and perfect and we celebrated our engagement for the remainder of the weekend in one of our favorite places.

Once we returned home to Los Angeles, the wedding planning began.  Some of our best memories were made in Northern California so we knew that was where we wanted to get married.  We fell in love right away with Beaulieu Garden and the privacy and beauty it offered.  We started making wedding plans soon thereafter.

We really wanted our wedding to be unique and personal and a hands-down fabulous party for our 250 guests.  James’ dad married us, which was so special and something we will always treasure.  We wrote and recited our own vows and managed to not lose it up there.  (It wasn’t easy.)  We also had one of our closest family friends and James’ aunt and uncle give readings during the ceremony.  James and I both agree that the ceremony was the very best part of the day for us.

Food and wine were a major priority.  We love oysters, so Hog Island shucked fresh oysters during our cocktail hour.  Also, one of our favorite meals is a charcuterie board so each guest was given their own personal board as the first course of our sit-down dinner.  It featured our favorite meats and cheeses and other local accompaniments.  Each board was engraved with our names and the boards were returned to guests as favors as they boarded the shuttles at the end of the evening.  Paula LeDuc served our favorite wines throughout dinner and also set up a spectacular champagne tower, poured when we cut the cake.

Music was another main priority.  We hired an orchestra, including a baby grand piano, for the ceremony and cocktail hour.  We also love the bagpipes, which began with a trip to Pebble Beach during one of our Northern California trips, and we hired a bagpiper to escort our guests from the cocktail hour to the reception.  Our band, Project M from Elan Artists, rocked the whole night and the dance floor was full, even before dancing officially started.

We feel so lucky to have celebrated our wedding in a beautiful location with all of our closest family and friends.  Without trying to sound cliche, it was a dream come true and perfect in every way.  We wouldn’t have changed a thing!

A Castle Wedding With Provence’s Quintessential Charm

This darling couple set out with the help of Les Cocottes Events to plan a wedding with “true Provence charm.” Between the enchanting grounds of Chateau de Robernier, the olive oil favors, the Bride’s lace covered gown, and the candlelight setting, they absolutely captured that quintessential charm. Les Productions de la Fabrik and Weddream Productions shared the beauty of the day with us, so scroll on and press play!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/180140874 600 338]

From Les Productions de la FabrikClémence and Sebastian met in London a few years ago. Very quickly they had the strong feeling that they would spend their life together. They always wanted a wedding with a true “Provence” charm: an outdoor dinner under the trees, an old restored house with elegance, and all the beauty of the south of France including olive and palm trees and laurels in bloom. They obviously fell in love with the Robernier Castle! The wedding planning agency, Les Cocottes Events helped them realize all the ideas they had imagined for this great day – romantic, chic, Provencal with a touch of white, blue, lavender, and coral with lots of customized details. A candlelight dinner in the castle court under a sky of lights with a very animated photo booth and a provencal themed cocktail rounded out the night, with plenty of little gifts for their guests.

The photography was very important point to them; they contacted me more than a year before the big day!  They said, “We appealed to Peggy, Productions de la Fabrik, whose images are refined and elegant, with that natural and softness that we particularly like.” For the video, they called Patricia from WedDream Productions, which offered them a bright and playful film.

The floral decor was done by Marie Briolay from Ombelline, who created bouquets with colors and shapes to match the Robernier Castle and the atmosphere of Provence perfectly. The party was fun, with great music, thanks to Ben from Nuit Blanche DJ.

This day was wonderful! Clemence and Sebastian were surrounded by the people they love and who came from all over the world. A storm took place during the religious ceremony, but we the sun came out for the cocktail hour and dinner, which were a miracle of joy and love. On Sunday morning, the farewell brunch around the pool and under the trees was also an incredible memory of complicity, proof of love and tenderness. It was a perfect day!

Beautiful bride Merle had one rule while planning her big day: there are no rules. So when it came time to find that dream gown, she dove in without a “fixed picture” in mind and used her fun-loving personality as her guide. The results? Amélie, an absolute stunner that boasts horsehair-trimmed layers, a Swarovski crystal + pearl embroidered bodice and soft organza fabric. So with all of that gorgeousness, Katie needed a dress that would fit right into her playful party – one part sexy and one part fall-ready. She landed on Winifred, a gown that most definitely showed off her softer side, all while delivering that WOW look she was aiming for. Plus, Katie’s a bride who knows how to accessorize. I mean, that chic headpiece and veil? A definite win.

A Soccer Star + Fashion Blogger Share Their Stylish Wedding

You might recognize Ashley from her blog, Fashion Meets Futbol and today we’re seeing how she translated that eye for style to her California wedding. Ashley wed her soccer star love, Luis at Sunstone Vineyard and it’s filled to the gills with color, personality, and must-see fashion. Watch how Ashley paired a leather jacket with her wedding gown and so many more moments all captured by Mirelle Carmichael.

From the bride… Luis and I fell in love at the University of California, Santa Barbara and are blessed to call ourselves college sweethearts. After I graduated, Luis was drafted into the MLS as a professional soccer player and our adventure began. Five years later, Luis asked me if I wanted to take a road trip back up to college for the first time together. We walked around campus and had a moment at the soccer field where Luis’ love for soccer shined. Luis then surprised me with reservations at the same Italian restaurant where we had our first date! At the end of our meal Luis went “to the restroom” and when he came back there was a plate in his hand. Luis told me to close my eyes, not seeing what was on the plate. Luis loves pulling pranks so I honestly thought he was trying to pull one on me, but when I opened my eyes….Luis was down on one knee with a ‘Will you marry me?’ written on a desert plate and a ring in his hand. Through my tears, I said ‘yes!’.

With Luis’ career we started the planning process around his schedule and at the time we were living in Monterrey, Mexico. We knew we wanted to get married in Santa Barbara, CA since that is where we met and it was close to family. We searched for a venue that incorporated both our styles. Luis is from Mexico so we wanted a Spanish vibe, but also one that had a classic romantic feel to it. After weeks of searching, I came across Sunstone Vineyards & Winery in the Santa Barbara mountains and it was perfect. The venue gave a spanish feel with a cuvee cave and romantic features that were so easy to add simple touches like greenery and lots of candlelight. We said our own vows outside under a big tree and the weather was perfect. We had a Spanish guitarist welcoming our guests and my grandma and great uncle stole the show being the flower girl and ring bearer. We danced the night away outside under string lights with papel picado and ended the night with mexican wedding cookies and churros which were my fave!

A Cozy, Elegant Affair with a Side of Surprise Snow

Warm and cozy, elegant and oh so romantic. This Colorado wedding hits all the right notes at all the right times. But with the unpredictable weather, how did everything go so smoothly? Because they had none other than A Vintage Affair Events & Rentals working their magic behind the scenes. Add in Momental Designs’ crazy beautiful invites and Tamara Gruner’s gorgeous pics and this gallery is one we won’t be leaving anytime soon. Enjoy!

From A Vintage Affair Events & Rentals… Brooke and JC’s beautiful ranch wedding was definitely a day to remember! The couple journeyed from their home state of Texas to the mountains of Colorado. Their wedding was held at the beautiful Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Tabernash. Brooke and JC had a unique and special ceremony set up where the chairs were set in a circular shape and the couple stood in the middle of it surrounded by their loved ones. As is typical in Colorado, the weather was unpredictable all day. It rained, sleeted, snowed and produced graupel on and off all day. But, miraculously we had a small window around ceremony time and were able to get the ceremony done before the next storm rolled through. The mountains provided a magical backdrop with the clouds from the intermittent storms flowing down to the valley. Brooke and JC made the most out of the weather and even opted to do some photos in the snow that started falling right after the ceremony.

The reception space looked like something out of a dream. The tables were a mix of long wooden farm tables and rounds with ivory linen to give the space a more natural feel that complemented the wood of the barn. A long ivory cheesecloth runner ran the length of the wood head table with modern gold chandeliers hanging above adorned with greenery. The couple sat at the end of the table on a linen love seat. The tables were decorated with lovely floral arrangements from Sweet Pea Florals, gold and glass chargers and stemware and what seemed like countless taper candles to add to the warm and romantic feeling of the night. To soften the space Elite DJ also added light, airy drapery to the beams. Everyone was blown away when they walked into the space.

Brooke, JC, their friends and family danced the night away in the adjacent window filled room where Elite DJ also set up a fun photo booth with a gold sequence backdrop that brought spunk and silliness to the party, while an oxygen bar by Summit Oxygen led life back onto the dance floor. Tamara Gruner captured this fairy tale day beautifully.

On May 6, 2017, Josh and Katie said “I do” in Nashville, Tennessee at the Green Door Gourmet under a chiffon adorned structure covered in green and white hydrangeas. Katie arrived at the end of the aisle in a fancy car before stepping out for her love, Josh, to see her for the first time. Every detail was worthy of a “fine art” label, from the four Mrs. boxes to Katie’s sparkly Christian Louboutin heels to her absolutely stunning Galia Lahav gown!

Katie presented each of her Bridesmaids with gifts from Tiffany’s, each customized. The party continued into the barn area, draped in crystal chandelier and silver and pink details. With regards to the cake, Josh tells us, “We wanted a minimalist theme for the wedding, so this cake really went well with the simple and modern design aspect.” During the reception, guests dug into the all-white confection made up of two tiers of chocolate cake filled with chocolate mousse buttercream and salted caramel and two tiers of traditional almond wedding cake. The whole creation was covered with vanilla buttercream in “rustic textured lines” and decorated with white flowers. The pair also incorporated a sentimental piece into their cake cutting ceremony: “We had ‘Mr. & Mrs. Gracin – May 6, 2017’ engraved on the front of the servingware, and the back reads ‘I Like You a Lot’, which is a song by Jake Owen that Katie sent to me after dating for a couple of months,” says Josh, whose own single “Nothin’ Like Us” is steadily streaming on Spotify. “She also had it engraved in my wedding ring.”

5 Ways To Be a Risk-Taker in Your Home

We all have those moments in our life when we need change—whether it’s chopping five inches off your hair, planning a last minute vacation or slapping a statement on your home. The latter is what we’re talking about today, because every home deserves a little wow moment! From bold doors to rosy wallpaper, here are five ways to get risky with your new home update.

A Bold Front Door

Make a bright first impression by going bold with your front door. If a bold hue doesn’t necessarily work on the outside, try it on the inside. Lots of surrounding white works great with this courageous design choice.

Crazy Cool Lighting

If there’s one area you can focus on to splurge and to get wild with—lighting is it. Take these pink and gold kitchen pendants for example, they bring so much vibrancy to this white kitchen. Tie in some fun island seating or patterned cushioning for a pretty pairing.

Abstract Art

If color scares you, try to focus it in one area. An abstract art piece like this one shines beautifully when surrounded by white paint, a white console and flattering greenery.

Wow Wallpaper

Wallpaper has come a long way my friends. Today’s easy-removal options let you make a ‘wow’ statement when you want to. So be bold, babes and infuse your home with your favorite print.

Go Big or Go Home

Don’t let small square footage hold you back. You can still go big with key pieces—this canopy bed for example, makes a huge statement but still feels so open and airy.

A Travel-Loving Couple’s Engagement in Seoul

Sydney and Ted have lived across the world but when deciding on a location for their engagement session they knew it had to the beautiful city of Seoul, South Korea. As a nod to Sydney’s family origins, South Korea held a dear place in her heart, not to mention its incredible locations like the Gyeongbokgung Palace. From major sites to small cafes, these two strolled all through the city and photographer, Czar Goss came along for the ride.

From Sydney, the bride-to-be… We actually met quite some time ago, 10 + years, through mutual friends. We both grew up in the same town but went to rival schools. We didn’t talk much back then, but we had a very close mutual friend. There are actually photos of us together in the same photo on different occasions, except both of us are with the people we were dating at the time, which is really funny to look back at now.

After almost a year living abroad in Asia together, we made sure to be back home to Los Angeles for Christmas and New Years. We don’t really have much of a social life here, so we really wanted to be with our friends and family for the holidays. I was really excited about the opening of Skyspace in downtown LA and mentioned that we had to go during our trip. When it was my turn to slide down the glass slide, he was waiting for me at the end to pop the question.

Ted’s family is from Thailand and mine is from Korea. Since our wedding is taking place in Thailand, I knew I had to have our engagement session take place in Korea.

We chose the Gyeongbokgung Palace & Bukchon Hanbok Village because we wanted to incorporate the Hanbok, which is traditional Korean clothing. The direct translation for Hanbok really is “Korean clothing”. Gyeongbokgung Palace is one of biggest palaces in Korea but was considered the main palace in the Joseon dynasty. It’s a beautiful place situated within the busy city of Seoul where old meets new.

Ehwa woman’s university is notorious for their beautiful campus. There are tons of tourists here every single day. The blue doors and stairway to heaven are what caught my eye when scouting locations.

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse is from California and recently opened a location within the charming alleys of Garosugil. This area is filled with the best coffee shops and is one of my favorite places to just hang out. Ted and I love cafe hopping and are always on the lookout for cool and hip places when we travel.

The Tale of a Marchesa Gown and the New York City Public Library

The only thing more gorgeous than an elopement at the New York City Public Library is that insanely stunning Marchesa gown. It’s a show stopper and when paired with simple, elegant details crafted by Query Events including the prettiest of paper goods by Cleggraphy Designs, this inspiration will have you craving a minimalist approach to saying “I Do”. Fall in love with this marbled gem captured by Callie Manion right here.

When you get the chance to shoot at the New York Public Library in a Marchesa gown, you pack your bags and get on the earliest flight out of Dallas! The design concept was really centered around the architecture of both the amazing front steps of the NYPL and the caped Marchesa gown. Keeping color to a minimum was vital in not overpowering the existing features – we opted for various shades of gray to mimic the marbled elements of the building and added a pop of black in our stationary pieces by Cleggraphy Design. Unfortunately we had a beautiful vintage car that cancelled less than an hour before their scheduled arrival. The only solution was to pull the inner New Yorker out of this Texan girl and hail a good old fashioned taxi! Although not the original plan, I’m thrilled at the truthfulness in those images! What a wonderful experience and dream come true to have this opportunity to work with so many amazing vendors!

Modern + Romantic Elopement Inspiration in NYC

For years now I’ve said that if I were to get married, I’d elope. Give me an amazing dress (or several), an insanely talented photographer and the man of my dreams, and I’d be one very happy bride. So to me, this modern yet romantic New York City elopement editorial is absolute perfection. With the one and only KT Merry behind the lens, The Nouveau Romantics creating a crazy beautiful design, wedding dresses from the best of the best styled by yours truly (think: Carolina Herrera, Elie Saab from Mark Ingram Atelier, J. Mendel and Viktor & Rolf), floral masterpieces by Jenya and beauty by the gurus at Face Time Beauty Concierge, this day is a 21st century fairytale. Read on for the happily ever after and ideas to inspire your own perfect day.

The Story

The bride is 29-years-old, Gemma, and she works for a well known fashion designer on their international marketing team. She is well travelled, well educated, and extremely down to earth. She loves exploring new restaurants and often dreams of a life in France. In fact, she and her fiancé were engaged in Paris. Her groom, Patrick, is originally from London and studied at Boston University (where the two met) before beginning a career in finance. He fell in love with Gemma’s smile, her effortless charisma and love of meeting new people and places. They bonded further over their tight knit families and common love of reading and history.

After getting engaged, they realized that bringing together their large international families for a destination wedding was something that would create a large financial burden on them both and their start together. They also didn’t want to burden their parents with an elaborate celebration and quite quickly they both fell in love with the idea of eloping. They had made a home together in New York City and it felt fitting that their marriage begin there as well. As their talks continued they knew they would want to involve their immediate family and friends and it was an easy decision to bring their closest friends and family to New York to celebrate with them in what would be an intimate and memorable dinner celebration in the city. They decided to marry privately at City Hall and with fashion being a passion for Gemma they would still dress exquisitely, her selecting a stunning, fashion-forward gown and he in a tuxedo. After their private ceremony they would explore the city with a photographer they both loved and capture images to celebrate their milestone. That evening Gemma would change into a timeless dress and join their waiting family and friends for a candlelit dinner at the top of the Gramercy Park Hotel. They would dine, toast and cut a cake while their closest family celebrated their new beginning alongside them.

Following their intimate celebrations they would embark on an adventurous honeymoon to the beaches of the Seychelles followed by a week long safari in Africa.

The Elopement

The Details

Planning your own elopement or intimate wedding? We’ve got you covered. Without spending a small fortune on food and alcohol for 100+ of your nearest and dearest, you have the freedom to splurge on details that really mean something to the two of you as a couple. Instead of simple place cards, consider calligraphed letters to each guest  sharing your gratitude for their relationship and presence. Another thoughtful touch? The favors. Rather than go the traditional route, we thought that Gemma and Patrick would love giving each of their guests a book of poetry by their favorite writers — a meaningful gift that guests can cherish forever.

Sex in the City Fans, You May Recognize This Bride’s Shoes

Inspired by her fashion icon, this pretty Bride wore Carrie Bradshaw’s blue Manolo Blahnik pumps for her something blue on her wedding day, and we absolutely love how they paired with her Monique Lhuillier gown – no surprise, with these two timeless brands. Absolutely Loved photographed the wedding on Oahu’s North Shore, which perfectly reflected the Bride’s style with the help of Nichole Weddings and Events and Passion Roots‘ lovely floral arrangements. See it all right here.

Whimsical

From Absolutely Loved PhotographyJennifer and Ned’s Hawaii destination wedding took place at the naturally beautiful Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu. The Bride wore a romantic lace dress, her Bridesmaids wore glamorous sequined dresses, and the gentlemen wore ocean-inspired navy suits. The neutral florals were complemented nicely with whites, greens, and soft tones of blush. It was a simple wedding by the beach with emphasis on the couple and their close family and friends.

From the Bride… I met Ned through a friend when he moved home to Seattle after living in Vegas for nine years. We were instantaneously best friends and would hang out every day after work, either eating at the newest restaurants in Seattle or binge watching Game of Thrones. He eventually took me on our first date to watch a movie (Lay the Favourite) which he was an extra in but didn’t tell me until I saw him on the big screen. At that moment, I knew he was someone unique that I wanted to get to know more. For our one year dating anniversary, he took me to Europe on a backpacking trip, but knowing my love for luxury hotels, he made sure each night we laid our heads to rest at the most beautiful hotels even though we had walked to see sights all day and only had 3-4 outfits which we wore for 2 weeks! A couple years into dating, we took a weekend trip to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon, and that is where he proposed!

For my bridal look, I absolutely love Monique Lhuillier – her pieces are timeless, classy, and feminine. I am also drawn to ornate details like my floating straps and back details. One of my fashion icons is Sarah Jessica Parker – I have always wanted to own the blue Manolo Blahniks from the Sex and the City movie and thought this would be a perfect opportunity to include them as my something blue. I searched high and low for a makeup artist who was fashion forward but also had strong techniques and found Liz from Maui Makeup Artistry who exceeded my expectations by far!

Ned picked out (from Blue Nile) the engagement ring all on his own and completely shocked me. He is extremely traditional, and I would have never guessed he would purchase a yellow diamond, but he chose something that represented me. I strive to be different from the pack and walk to the beat of my own drum, and he wanted me to have a ring that was different from the rest.

We wanted to be on the quieter side of Oahu (North Shore) with beautiful views and great hotel service so we wouldn’t have to worry about catering, decor, etc., so we chose Turtle Bay Resort. It also probably helped that we love Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which was shot at the resort).

Three moments from our big day stood out to me: 1) My dad’s speech, which was heartfelt and reminded me that I was the apple of his eye and how excited he was to welcome Ned into our family. 2) Stepping out as husband and wife for the first time amongst our closest friends and family was the most amazing feeling ever, to be surrounded by so much love. 3) The first dance where Ned sang all the words to Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran to me – it was the song that we both loved when we first heard it and would sing it in the car together, plus it played on the radio right after he proposed to me, so we knew it had to be our first dance song!

How to Split the Bachelorette Party Bill

We’ve all been there. You—and the 10 other girls in your dinner reservation—are (several) cocktails deep, ready to hit the dance floor. Then the server shows up with one, long check.

All of a sudden, you’re doing rocket science, trying to divide that bill into the inevitably odd number of dinner guests while adding up credit cards. Multiply that by a bachelorette weekend’s worth of expenses, and you’re looking at more headache than a hangover!

Untamed Heart Photography

We’re giving you the prescription for more fun – and less stress – when it’s time to split the bachelorette party bill.

Gather all the bridesmaids
Step one is to get everyone on the same page. Planning the bachelorette party typically falls to the maid of honor, but the bride can appoint anyone to lead the charge. Once the bride hands over the list of invitees, contact information, and her available dates, the responsible bridesmaid can kick off the conversation in a group email or text.

This is where you manage expectations from the beginning for how much the event will cost. A full weekend in Vegas is going to require a budget. So will one night on the town, albeit a smaller one. Tell everyone now if there will be hotel rooms, large group dinners, or additional costs (pool cabanas, bottle service, party bus, etc.) involved. Bridesmaids should know the financial commitment before officially RSVPing to the party.

Note for frugal friends: you should not expect special treatment at a bachelorette party (for example, that your salad and cocktail be separated from the group check). Understand that large group dinners usually mean larger individual bills. Budget ahead, relax, and order that second glass of wine!

Amy Rizzuto

Decide what the bride will pay for
You’ll no doubt want to treat the bride during her bachelorette. Depending on the cost per person, that could be all expenses paid, or a few special luxuries. You’ve already assessed the group’s tone in your “budget expectations” email. Recommend what you think will be reasonable to most of the group, and ask if anyone has any issues with it.

For a weekend getaway, it’s common for the bride to buy her own plane ticket, but the bridal party to split the accommodations. It’s up to your group whether you’ll ask the bride to pitch in for other major expenses. A nice gesture would be to treat the bride during the evening festivities. Whether you want to provide all the bride’s meals and drinks during the day is up to you. By the way, the bride should never be responsible for any lingerie party-related expenses.

Note to brides: it’s a lot to ask your friends to foot the bill for an entire weekend. Consider offering to help cover costs for any extravagant requests.

Divvy major expenses among a few
One way to avoid performing brain surgery after every meal is to divide major expense among a few bridesmaids. Ask for volunteers to put her card down for large charges like dinner, the cabana rental, or the hotel. Assure them they’ll be repaid in a timely manner at the end of the weekend. And hold your end of the deal by dividing each cost by the rest of the guests over a cup of coffee on the plane home. You’re responsible for communicating what each person owes to each volunteer ASAP.

D’Arcy Benincosa

Or volunteer to take the bill
If your credit limit can handle it, put your card down for all the group purchases. You’ll make it easier on yourself when it comes to splitting costs at the end of the trip. Instead of adding and dividing multiple cards, simply total your group charges, and divide by the number of responsible bridesmaids.

Bonus: maybe those airline miles will help cover some of the cost of your trip!

Keep a spreadsheet
Money is always a touchy subject. Requesting money from friends (and sometimes strangers) is even more difficult to navigate! Protect yourself from personality issues with as much transparency as possible. Share a Google doc with your group email including detailed descriptions of each cost and who’s responsible for paying it. As you commit to your Airbnb or order your matching “Bridesmaid” tank tops, add a line to the Google doc or an Excel spreadsheet and send an update to the group.

Then everyone will be able to see charges in real time – and there will be no surprises when it’s time to collect what people owe. At the end of the weekend, include each cost on a separate line, so you’re prepared for any questions.

Use tech support
Splitting the bachelorette bill doesn’t have to require a CPA. There are plenty of tech options to simplify the process! Venmo is probably the simplest solution. Since it’s linked to Facebook, finding people is super easy – and sending or requesting money takes two seconds. Bridesmaids can download the app and link any bank account or credit card. The best part: once you request payment, Venmo will remind people until they pay you. PayPal, online banking, and money transfer services are also helpful.

Tip: Tell partygoers on the front end if they need to download an app or sign up for PayPal or Venmo. It’ll streamline the process at the end of the trip.

Enforce a deadline
This is when you’ll thank yourself for managing budget expectations on the front end! Share in advance when payment will be due, whether that’s the day – or the week – after the bachelorette festivities. You might even request girls pre-pay for the hotel room or limo service. (You can always circle back on room service or mini bar charges.) For more budget-conscious brides, work out a payment plan that’s respectful to you both. Remind all the bridesmaids that volunteers won’t want major charges lingering on their credit cards!

Bridal Bootcamp Week 2 – Let’s Do This!

Happy Monday to all you super-fit babes out there! How did the first week of bootcamp go? Share your experiences in the comments below or on Instagram using #SMPBootcamp — Peter and I would love to hear from you!

Need to start at Week 1? — Find it here.

We’re focusing on legs and back this week and this workout is my absolute favorite. My back is going to be on full display at my wedding in October (my fiancé already knows way too much about my dress so who cares if I write about it at this point — is that bad luck?) so I’ve been doubling up these exercises to make sure I look extra lean in that area.

The other reason I love this week’s circuits is because of the leg focus, which gives me an excuse to foam roll. If you guys haven’t tried this, I cannot recommend it enough. First and foremost, taking a few minutes to roll on the days where you worked your legs harder than usual is amazing for minimizing soreness — and this will make it easier for you to get back in the gym again right away and will lower the risk of injuring yourself!

Secondly, it feels great. With all the wedding expenses right now, that last thing I’ve been able to do is splurge on a massage, so foam rolling is the next best thing. I do it before I go to bed and find that it totally relaxes me. And there’s apparently something to that — a 2014 study found that practices like foam rolling have the potential to lower the stress hormone cortisol! We brides could all use a little less of that, am I right?!

Spend some time this week rolling out your hamstrings and quads — I promise, you won’t regret it!

From a nutrition standpoint, we’re keeping things pretty basic this week, although I do have a fun new breakfast recipe for you! This recipe is great because it makes enough for the whole week, so no need to cook every morning, simply reheat! Check out this week’s sample meal plan below.

Click here for this week’s recipe.

Keep up the amazing work, and I’ll see you next week!

XO,

Molly
