This Wedding Editorial Was Inspired by Doors!

Inspired by the blue doors found throughout Tuscany, this Texas editorial created by Southern Affairs Weddings + Events at Le San Michele will transport you directly to the Mediterranean. We’re talking a bride wearing an effortlessly romantic gown from Lovely Bride Dallas and drool-worthy lace shoes from Bella Belle, some of the most gorgeous stationery we’ve ever seen courtesy of Seniman Calligraphy, and a tablescape that captures Tuscany’s quintessential rustic look thanks to La Tavola Fine Linen Rental and Bella Acento. See all of this brought to life through the lens of Allen Tsai Photography in the full gallery, and you’ll be singing, “Vita bella.”

From Southern Affairs Inspired by the blue doors found on many Tuscan-style stone homes, Le San Michele was the perfect venue to bring Italian-inspired elegance to Austin, Texas. This quaint venue is nestled within the rolling hills of Austin and provides an infinite amount of beautiful European-esque textures and details.

I knew immediately that I wanted Allen Tsai from Allen Tsai Photography to capture this editorial. Having extensive experience photographing in Tuscany and all around Europe, I knew he would be the perfect fit to accentuate the look and feel of this editorial since he has immersed himself in that environment. Adriana Smith from Moss Floral created inspiring textures and structures for the bouquet, installs, and centerpieces. The bouquet had creamy tones of orange and yellow looped with trailing greenery. Everything she designed was so romantic and effortless, which completed our vision and design.

So much thought and care was put into every details and piece of décor, from the menus on top of the lace chargers to the meringue-inspired cake created by Whisk Until Sweet to the vines tracing the cross back of the wooden chairs. Hand-drawn stationery was created by Seniman Calligraphy on the most beautiful organic cream and blue papers with floral sketching. The Italian welcome gift was curated by Bonjour Boxes, and the charcuterie spread was crafted by Eden East Catering.

Our inspiration was complete with the natural and elegant look created by Lola Beauty paired with hairpieces from Maggie Wu Studio and sheer Bella Belle shoes. The airy and flowy gown by Alexandra Grecco from Lovely Bride Dallas would be the perfect gown for any Italian countryside wedding.

How To Make Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year Shine in Your Home

The announcement of Ultra violet as Pantone’s 2018 color of the year signifies a return to bright, rich and vibrant hues. “Purple helps you foster creativity and feel inspired,” says Moll Anderson, author of Change Your Home, Change Your Life with Color.

However, purple is no shrinking violet. It requires a bit of finesse to ensure its qualities shine. Incorporate the color with confidence with advice from the pros. Here’s what interior designers recommend:

For the non-committal types.
The easiest way to incorporate the color is through home accessories such as accent pillows, vases, curtains and candles says home staging pro Jennifer Hunter, of Fashion Furniture Rental and Staging. Christiane Lemieux, of The Inside, seconds this sentiment. “Style accessories into your bookshelves or table tops to brighten and add dimension to your space.”

Sherry Hope-Kennedy of Studio SHK, has a different idea on how to bring the color to life. “Use ultra violet as a living accent. Pepper in the color with purple plants and fresh cuts such as lilacs, African violets and sage.”

Be bold (at least for some time).
If you prefer to make a bigger splash, “incorporate the color into your home with artwork,” says Caitie Smithe, Designer, Walter E. Smithe. “A bold piece using ultra violet, in an otherwise neutral space, gives you an excellent pop of this on trend color.” Other options, according to Christine, are to switch your rugs or consider a paint job to use the hue. “Paint is the easiest way to update your space. A colored statement wall instantly transforms your home from dull to lively and invigorating. It’s now easier than ever with new peel and stick wallpapers that come right off,” she says.

Caitie also recommends using natural stones with ultra violet hues. “There are so many cool accessories and end tables using crystals and stones that are naturally ultra violet in color. These pieces are truly versatile and blend nicely in any home.”

Take the plunge.
If you love Pantone’s 2018 color of the year, invest in furniture that will last long after the year is over. “Ultra Violet is stunning on velvet,” says Caitie. “Velvet shows color brilliantly so it’s the perfect fabric to capture the deep hues of the purple hue. The soft texture of velvet naturally warms up the space which brings a nice balance to the boldness of ultra violet.”

An alternative option is a navy velvet sofa with an ultra violet throw pillow or blanket. “Ultra violet could definitely be classified as being purple in color, however it has a blue base which makes it extremely complimentary to blues,” says Caitie. “The combination of navy blue with pops of ultra violet is dark and almost mysterious but uplifting at the same time.”

“Pantone’s Ultra Violet 2018 color of the year isn’t the easiest color to inject into a color-shy person’s interior, but it certainly infuses drama and style once a commitment is made,” says interior designer Charmaine Wynter. “Ultra violet is the perfect way to create a more cozy effect.”

This Black-Tie Wedding is Putting a Fresh Twist on Classic

Lucite and greenery are the perfect pair for this black-tie affair at Front & Palmer in Philadelphia. I use the term greenery loosely. In reality, it’s stunning white blooms intertwined with green garlands and all fashioned into statement making installations hanging from the ceiling. It’s a wow moment crafted by Wild Stems that fits right in with this modern take on a classic, fancy affair. See it all unfold through the lens of Rachel Pearlman Photography.

From the Photographer… This elegant black tie wedding is best described as classic with a modern twist. Despite getting married in mid -October, the elements and color scheme that guided Courtney and Jeremy’s day transfers to any season, and Courtney wanted her wedding to be timeless – no matter the weather prediction! After meeting the first week at Amherst College and discovering that they both had roots in Philadelphia, Courtney and Jeremy began a long courtship of love and friendship, culminating their engagement with a modern and fresh event at Front and Palmer, a former barrel factory in Philadelphia’s fishtown neighborhood. Courtney chose an intricate long sleeved gown by Amsale, and with her bridesmaids in grey she knew that her wedding would remain classic with a soft palate. Florals were black and white with hints of greenery – think white berries, lush white roses and anemone. Courtney wore her grandmother’s vintage diamond ring on her right hand and borrowed diamond earrings from her family’s jeweler in New York. The space at Front and Palmer is industrial yet inviting, and Courtney and Jeremy used the blank slate to create their dream wedding – a modern ceremony held under a floating chandelier of florals and greens, flanked by candles and acrylic ghost chairs. Guests entered the ceremony to Bittersweet Symphony and Canon in D. While they did not have a traditional Chuppuh, the couple broke glass underneath the floating centerpiece. During the reception, American Deluxe kept the party going all night while guests danced underneath market lights. Courtney and Jeremy describe their wedding as a fresh and modern fairytale!

Six Reasons 2018 Is Going To Be Absolutely Fabulous

If you’re not ready to give up on all of the holiday hoopla quite yet, no worries. We’re still in celebration mode over here at SMP, and it has everything to do with six gorgeous gowns from Maggie Sottero Designs that we just know are going to make several appearances in the new year. Check out some real brides looking beautiful in our fave frocks below.

Photography: Ashley Errington

We’re big fans of anything Rebecca Ingram, and the Drew is no exception. We love the Chantilly lace, flattering V-back, and elegant scalloping around the neck and hem. But what we love the most? How this beautiful bride, Lillian, paired up her gorgeous look with a muted mint color palette and stunning white blooms. Oh, and did we mention the Rebecca Ingram line that is just as pretty as it is budget-friendly? A total win-win.

Photography: Stacy Able Photography

We’re big fans of any gown with lace features, and the Sandra from Rebecca Ingram does it so, so beautifully with delicate lace appliqués and an illusion scoop back that that has one of the prettiest lace features ever. Bride Sarah paired her sweet fit-and-flare with mix and match bridesmaid gowns in muted hues for a look that was all kinds of classic elegance – we adore it.

Photography: Melissa Durham

Maggie Sottero’s Kirstie is one of those gowns that just screams romance. But a boho wedding dress with a sheath silhouette will do that to you.  We’re all about the lace appliqués that lay on top of those layers of gorgeous tulle, and the sweetheart neckline is super figure-flattering. We seriously can’t get over the pink + coral color scheme that bride Mallory chose – it really shows off Kirstie’s flirty side. And you know we love a classic meets sassy gown, y’all.

Photography: Fig Tree Pictures

Sottero and Midgley is known for ultra-chic, cutting-edge gowns and the Winifred most certainly delivers with a contemporary illusion halter neckline (hey there, deep V) and a scalloped plunging back that is basically the definition of statement making. Take it from bride, Laura… this is the kind of dress that is timeless AND elegant. Oh, we love her choice of light blue bridesmaid gowns. They complement her gown in just the right way.

Photography: Don Mears

We’ve had our eyes on Patience for awhile now – and one look at the beautiful Swarovski crystal waist and you’ll see why. From the stunning lace appliqués scattered across the bodice to the sweetheart neckline and corset back, it’s the kind of Maggie Sottero gown that shows off your gorgeous figure with a side of sexy we can’t get over. Pair it with royal blue bridesmaid gowns and a pop of yellow like bride Euridice and you’ve definitely got a winning combo.

Photography: Alex Lasota

We know that walking the line between classic, rustic and boho isn’t always easy when it comes to wedding planning, but here’s the trick: find a dress that does it for you and the rest will fall into place. Sottero and Midgley’s Wyatt is just that gown with a sophisticated meets glamorous silhouette, gorgeous details (hey there, plunging illusion neckline) and lace cap sleeves. It’s the kind of dress that works in any style wedding, but really shines in this rustic meets bohemian celebration. Oh, and we adore the neutral maids.

Ready to tackle 2018 with a gown that will leave all of your guests talking? Check out all of the beauties in the Maggie Sottero Designs lineup – from romantic styles from Maggie Sottero, to chic gowns from Sottero and Midgley, to elegant, yet budget-friendly numbers from Rebecca Ingram, they totally have you covered. How To Have a Couples Wedding Shower

Couples everywhere are tossing aside the idea of a girls-only bridal shower and instead, opting to celebrate their pre-wedding events together. Known as a couple’s shower, you’re likely to see these co-ed wedding showers popping up everywhere in the new year. Interested in hosting one yourself? Here are a few things to consider.

When is a Couples Shower Appropriate?
A bridal shower is a lovely time for not only your girlfriends, but for your female family members as well. The idea of hosting a couple’s shower may not sit well with Grandma, but for those that live out-of-state, away from family and friends, or consider their closest loved ones to be men, it might be a good idea. Weigh the pros and cons and consider who you want to celebrate this big event with—the answer to that question should help you determine what to do (and help you convince Grandma that it’s a good idea!).

How to Request a Couples Shower from Your Hostess
A bridal shower is usually hosted by a mother, mother-in-law, or maid of honor, so if you are thinking of doing a couple’s shower, it’s important you let them know as soon as possible. Talk over your idea with your hostess and let them know your thoughts on style, guest list and party ideas. Offer to help them plan, or even pitch in, as the guest list is sure to double as you add all the men in your life to the party!

How to Make it Gender Neutral
If you dream of sparkly tablecloths and cupcakes topped with engagement rings, you may want to reconsider the couple’s shower. Instead, a co-ed event should be just that—co-ed. Consider testing out a theme that works great for both genders, like a BBQ or pool party. If you want to up the fancy factor, ask everyone to dress up and create an evening of cocktails and passed appetizers. Just be sure you don’t overshadow the actual wedding with your shower.

Inform Your Guests
Make sure your guests are aware of the co-ed factor before they arrive. Use the invitation to let them know that it will be a couple’s soiree and be sure your registry reflects that. The bridal shower is often a time for the girls in your life to gift you with girly items like bridal undergarments or fancy nighties, so it’s important they know the gifts will be opened by you and your husband to be.

Stop What You’re Doing + Look at This Venetian Elopement

A gondola ride, a grand yet intimate dinner, and a masquerade ball with your love – this is the romance of my dreams, and it was all brought to life in a breathtaking elopement editorial planned and designed by Scent of Orchid and shot by the magnificent Rebecca Yale Photography. We’re talking a sexy, black lace Claire Pettibone number, fiery red florals by Madness Flowers, and a menu designed by Written Word Calligraphy to look like one of Cassanova’s love letters. This, ladies, is the definition of amore.

Our Venetian elopement editorial was inspired by the romance of the floating city itself. The city is famous for its gondolas, canals, Casanova, and – of course – masquerade balls. We were inspired by the Baroque paintings that covered the Hall of Music in the Ca’Sagredo Hotel and carried the palette through the shoot with black and gold as our dominant colors with deep pops of red. Venice is famous for its glasswork and lace, which are made on the islands of Murano and Burano right off of Venice’s shore, and the black lace Claire Pettibone dress set the tone for the dark romance of the day, which was echoed in the lace runner on the ballroom table. Written Word Calligraphy created an invitation suite featuring a folded invitation that opened like a letter and hearkened back to Casanova’s letters that he would write to his lovers while imprisoned in the city. A single red rose bud was placed on the four guests’ plates next to the love-letter-like menu along with a miniature mask, much like the one the bride wore during portraits. We imagined the couple would enjoy a romantic and intimate meal followed by a masquerade ball of music and dancing and then a gondola ride through the canals of Venice.

Now THIS is How You Create the Coziest Room in Existence

Cozy goes hand-in-hand with beautifully designed when it comes to this coastal living room designed by Jessica McClendon of Glamour Nest. What it lacks in space, it more than makes up for in charm and comfort. The bookshelves are stocked, the pillows are perfectly fluffed and that sectional is just begging for a good cuddle session.

From Jessica…This cozy family room belongs to a busy family of four. They wanted a super comfortable lounge area for the whole family to hang out and watch movies in together. However, because of space limitations they started second guessing what to do. That’s where I came in. Even though working with such a small space was a challenge, I embraced it and in the end was able to create a space that’s charming, welcoming and cozy.

Since the room is small and I was already toeing a delicate line, we opted for a light and airy color palette to help keep the space feeling light. I used shades of blue, whitewashed woods and found objects like coral and driftwood to play off of the coastal location. For seating we opted for a large sectional from Restoration Hardware, which takes up most of the space but has room for the entire family. To balance out the largeness of the sofa, we made sure to choose a very medium tone fabric. That way, it wouldn’t feel heavy in the space. We added a West Elm coffee table to hold drinks and snacks, but opted for a style that helped the room feel more open.

Now, we did want to add a little dash of drama (I love color!) which is where the navy console and Penguin Classics book collection comes in. They add a playful pop. Lastly, we included storage ottomans that can hold magazines and throw blankets. The family can pull them up to the sofa to kick back and put their feet up, or they can be used as extra seating. When they aren’t needed, they can be pushed under the console and out of the way. We used Williams Sonoma lamps, a West Elm rug, ottomans from Ballard Designs and accessories from Pottery Barn to complete the space.

Classic Elegance + Rustic Charm Are a Match Made in Heaven

We love a good style combination, and this bride nailed it at her wedding planned by Amore Events by bringing her classic look to the rustic gorgeousness that is Pippin Hill Farm + Vineyards. A minimal Austin Scarlett gown, timeless ivory blooms by Tourterelle Floral Design, and Ashley Cox‘s photography were the perfect combination! So if you need us today, we’ll be right here soaking up this lovely gallery.

Rachel and Joe are high school sweethearts who started dating freshman year and have been together ever since! They both went to UVA in Charlottesville, VA, and currently reside in New York City. They chose Charlottesville and Pippin Hill as their wedding venue, as they adore the city and wanted their family and friend to experience the beauty of Virginia in the summertime.

From the Bride… When we began planning our wedding, we knew we wanted to have a weekend focused on bringing family and friends together. Since we love Charlottesville, both attended UVA, and frequently take weekend trips down to visit, we thought it would be the perfect town for a short destination wedding weekend, giving us lots of time to spend with everyone.

Since all our guests would be traveling, we wanted a venue that would really highlight the beauty of the area. Between that, the delicious food and wine, and its accommodating and picturesque venue spaces and bridal/groom suites, we felt that Pippin Hill would be the ideal place and it provided a wonderful backdrop for a weekend full of celebrations!

I love neutral tones and black and white, so the bridesmaids wore champagne and the groomsmen were in classic black tuxes. When selecting my dress, I was looking for some architectural detail and minimal embellishments.

Joe was focused on music for the entire day, including the Linden Trio for the ceremony and the Silver Bullets out of Richmond, who played an acoustic set during cocktail hour and at the reception.

Two of my favorite details of the room were the cake, which had tiers of flowers between each layer, and the hanging floral installation of dendrobium orchids and Italian ruskus. I had discovered this combination at a storefront a few months prior to the wedding and loved how the linear florals added a romantic but still structured look to the hanging installation. We wanted the room to be lit entirely by candlelight during the reception, so other than the lights from the band, votives of different heights provided all the lighting for the evening. The day of was made all the more magical because of the 70-degree humidity-free day in the middle of August – we felt so lucky!

Real Brides Share Wedding Budget Regrets and Must-Haves

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – engagement season! Nearly 40% of all couples get engaged between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day every year. What Makes the Big Day Unforgettable?
Zola asked all participants of the survey what would make/made your wedding day unforgettable. With the venue and the photographer claiming the first and second spots for both newlyweds and newly engaged couples, Newlyweds reported that their wedding planner, officiant, wedding cake, and the after party all had a bigger impact on their wedding day than is prioritized by engaged couples.

On the other hand, engaged couples ranked hair/makeup and invitations high on the list of importance. However, both newlyweds and engaged couples agreed that the after party was of more significance than the rehearsal dinner.

Say Yes to the…Venue!

You know that feeling everyone talks about when they’ve found THE dress? This bride had it when she came upon the oak tree at Bedell Cellars in Long Island’s North Fork. Standing there, she knew it was where she would say “I do” to the love of her life, and the picturesque spot set the tone for the entire day. Hamptons Aristocrat enhanced the rustic elegance of the vineyards, choosing a neutral color palette and leafy green arrangements created by Sag Harbor Florist, for a natural beaut’ photographed by Lindsay Madden that we can’t get enough of!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/234739218 600 338]

From the Bride… Ryan and I met 10 years ago on one of our first days of college. After almost nine years of dating and two-and-a-half years of planning our wedding, the one thing that continually inspired us throughout the process was wanting to plan the absolute best party for our guests that had been with us throughout our relationship. We kept our friends and family in the forefront of our decisions knowing that this is a one-of-a-kind occasion where you have everyone that you love most – both sides of the family and friends from every stage of life – in the same room.

One of the first decisions we made was choosing Bedell Cellars as our venue. I spent my summers in Long Island and can remember visiting the North Fork vineyards with my parents and grandparents from a young age, so I knew that the location would be the North Fork. We visited a lot of vineyards, but the first time I saw the oak tree at Bedell, I knew that was where I would get married. The feeling that most brides have when they try on their wedding dress is the exact way I felt when I stood there.

Everything that came after was a direct reflection of the natural beauty and rustic space that Bedell offers. We chose blush, green, and white as our colors, not only because they’re my favorites, but because they perfectly highlighted the space without taking away from it. Aside from the French country inspired centerpieces, candles were placed all over the pavilion, and they added the best warm, twinkle of light in all of our pictures!

Planning a wedding taking place on Long Island while living in Boston during my last year of law school and studying for the bar exam started to feel like a destination wedding! I knew that one of the most important things was having vendors that I could rely on and that would work seamlessly together. My wedding planner, Jessi, was second to none! Without Jessi (and my mom) the night certainly wouldn’t have come together like it did. She has an eye for every last detail, the most helpful tips, and is such a calming presence when things get crazy! Hamptons Aristocrat provided the most amazing food and unique service that you can get at a wedding. The Dylan Matthews Band from Hank Lane was an absolute highlight for us and our guests. Absolutely everyone was on the dance floor the whole night! It was amazing seeing all of our guests having such a blast! Lindsay Madden and Kristen Kiraly captured our day in pictures and on video in a way that will make sure that we never forget a single moment – even the moments that we didn’t get to witness ourselves. We couldn’t be more grateful to have every emotional, sentimental, and hilarious moment to look back on. If there is one piece of advice I would give all brides its to go with your gut when choosing your vendors. I picked all of mine based off of the feeling I got during the initial phone calls and definitely didn’t go wrong with any of them! When you can trust your vendors, you’re able to enjoy the planning process so much more. Instead of getting caught up in every last detail, I knew I could rely my vendors to guide me in the right direction, and I was able to enjoy every last second of our wedding. It truly was the best day ever!

5 Moods You’ll Experience During Your Engagement

Each stage of your engagement brings new excitement and a few challenges. Whether you’re in the announcement stage, planning stage, or counting down the days stage,  you’ll experience a few different moods along the way. Here’s 5 you will encounter.

Ring Selfieee

via GIPHY

You can’t deny it, you have a big sparkly ring on your finger and you can’t stop staring. Don’t worry, we can’t either. This mood won’t last forever. Take all of the ring selfies you want and ENJOY being able to tell people you’re newly engaged. Sparkle tip: Windex and a toothbrush makes your bling POP, plus it’s safe to use on your diamond. If you don’t have a diamond, just be sure to check with your jeweler for tips on cleaning.

J-Lo in The Wedding Planner

via GIPHY

No matter how experienced you are in planning parties, at some point during your engagement you’ll want to throw up your hair in a french twist, pull on a powder blue blazer and plan. that. wedding. You may experience mild stress but you’ll handle it like J-Lo would… with complete zen. Planning tip: Find a fun binder/notebook/planner that helps you visually bring your wedding together as you make the arrangements. The binder makes it even more fun.

*Sobs*

via GIPHY

Once the wedding arrangements have been made and planning becomes slower, it begins to feel more real. You’ll have that emotional, “OMG I’m getting married” thing. It occurs from a combination of 60% happy tears, 20% nostalgia, 15% bridal exhaustion and 5% weight of the world. Everything seems to build up emotionally and you think you can’t handle. Bridal tip: Take a day for YOU. Don’t stress or overthink. Just take a day to relax and not think about anything wedding related. It’s important to remember that your wedding should orbit around your life, not the other way around.

Chill AF

via GIPHY

This mood is a great place to be. You’ve let go of all wedding and marriage stress and you’re just lovin’ life. You may have all the planning done, or not but you’re choosing to rise above and just be okay. Enjoy this jolt of peace because it doesn’t last for extended periods of time (some of us may experience just 5 mere minutes of Chill AF). Chill tip: Just be still. Be present in the moment. Enjoy where you’re at. Being engaged won’t last forever and even though it can bring many ups and downs, it also is a once in a lifetime experience to soak in.

OMG I AM A QUEEN

via GIPHY

Most of us don’t experience this mood until the day of the wedding. It’s when you feel on top of the world and get all the “I’m a bride” feels. Once you experience this, NOTHING can ruin your day. The weather could have a forecast of a storm, your groom could misplace his jacket, and your Grandparents could be vocally criticizing the wedding venue. All bummer-ish things but it doesn’t matter as long as you and your groom are happy. Be the Queen for a day and brush off all the negativity, (if any).

Your moods will fluctuate throughout your engagement whether it’s by the day, or by the minute. Keep calm and wait for the OMG QUEEN mood because it will make everything else worth it.

Then you can fell all the post-wedding feels!

Fresh + Modern Wedding Trends for 2018 Brides

Chances are if you’ve attended a wedding in the last few years, you’ve seen a bride in white, burlap runners, mason jars, garlands and at least one Gatsby inspired nuptial (guilty!). It’s time to retire dated trends and give weddings a refresh in 2018. Here’s what the experts say is worth a make-over.

Opt for Colorful Bridal Attire
“Dresses in white and white-like colors, such as ivory and champagne, are losing favor to less traditional hues,” says Kate Lerman of Chicago Vintage Weddings. “Blush pink, pale blue and even grays, blacks and reds are starting to be featured in wedding gowns.” For those opting for a custom suit or tux, Kate says “unique color and pattern elements are also gaining in popularity, but the classic black tux remains popular as well.”

Bring Back The Florals
Over the last few years, lush greens have dominated design elements, “even more so in 2017 when Pantone named ‘greenery’ the color of the year,” says event planner Marc Eliot of swoop. “With the recent release of Pantone’s 2018 color, ‘ultra violet,’ we are ready to retire the diluted hues of succulents and garlands. Brighten tablescapes and bouquets with colorful flowers – orchids, anemones, violets, lilacs, hydrangeas, and irises – the bolder the better!”

Choose a Classic Cake Flavor
“Lavish cakes with unique flavors became all the rage in 2017,” says Marc. “Unfortunately, the number of guests who enjoy creamsicle, Mexican hot chocolate, passion fruit or lemon-thyme, is usually small and leaves the couple with a lot of leftovers. It’s time to retire exotic cake flavors and opt for the more traditional (and still delicious) vanilla, chocolate, or red velvet cakes. You can always personalize it with a special design.” If you can’t live without a trendy cake flavor, Marc recommends getting it for the smaller groom’s cake.

Slim Down Your Candles
Pillar candles are popular for a reason. “They have a timeless but I’d love to give them a break in 2018 and make way for taper candles,” says Audrey Isaac of 100 Candles. “They still give off great light and free up table space for other décor elements. From a practical standpoint, they also weigh less so if you’re purchasing in bulk, you could potentially save on shipping while still making a big impact.” Audrey recommends using taper candles in abundance.

Ditch DIY Projects
“It’s time to retire the expectation to DIY everything,” says Kate. “This puts tons of pressure on the couple and often results in a lot of stress.” Sure, doing one or two DIY projects can be fun but trying to do everything for such a major event by yourself—or to put the burden on family and friends—is a recipe for frustration. Plus, DIY projects that don’t work out can end up costing more money or resulting in a last-minute rush to book professionals instead says Kate.

Switch Up Seating
“Large head tables are finally fading away to make room for family tables,” says Beth Bernstein, SQN Events. “Plenty of special memories are made with your besties while getting ready. Weddings are about the coming together of two families, so why not dine together as one at your wedding?” The added bonus is the wedding party gets to spend time with their dates.

Why I’m Better at Long Distance Relationships

Over the holidays (and a few glasses of champagne), my friends and I started ticking down the list of our past relationships. The good, the bad, the I-wonder-if-he’s-still-single kind of conversation. Then it hit me: all my happiest relationships have been long distance.

I blame this sudden realization on the fact that I’m an external processor. But I became worried. Is something wrong with me? Is there a reason I need at least 500 miles between me and the person I love to have a healthy relationship? Am I alone in this?

The answer is: no. But there are several key reasons long distance relationships have worked for me. Here are a few:

I LOVE communicating.
It’s what I do for a living. It’s also what I do for fun. So it stands to reason that a relationship that depends on clear and consistent communication is my kind of relationship.

My work hours are crazy.
I have to be on camera by 6 a.m. half the week. That means I need to wake up by 4 a.m. to get camera-ready, brush up on late-breaking news, and take my puppy out (a few times). I’m normally in the office until 5:30 p.m., then rushing home to take my puppy back outside for a few hours of play time. Dog mom guilt is a real thing!

By the end of the day, I have just enough energy to talk on the phone while ordering takeout or heating up something frozen. I can’t cook, which is probably another reason long distance works for me.

Dating long distance allows me to prioritize my work schedule, my Sheltie, and my night time routine during the week. When we’re together, I can give our quality time my full attention.

I like to travel.
One of my favorite parts of dating long distance is that every time you see each other is a little adventure. One of you has to travel anyway, so why not pick a place and meet in the middle? I’ve been to so many exciting cities and cool little towns I wouldn’t have visited otherwise.

The person is worth it.
Dating long distance is hard. The only reason I’d ever consider putting in the effort required is a guy who makes it all worth it. Of COURSE those relationships are going to be great – because the people in them are great. Isn’t that the definition of a relationship?

I’ve realized what makes me good at long distance relationships is exactly what makes any person good at any relationship. It’s all about finding a balance between achieving your personal goals and investing in a relationship – and doing it simultaneously with an amazing person.

With that in mind, my next relationship might be just around the corner…

From the Bride… Benjamin and I were set up by our good friends. My childhood friend was, at the time, engaged to a very close friend of Ben’s, and they thought we would just hit it off. It took a little bit of encouragement, but Benjamin finally got the nerve to ask me out, and we totally hit it off. Ben recalls me being 40 minutes late to our first date, but when I showed up, he had a smile and a drink waiting for me, and I just knew we would be great together! We truly enjoyed spending time together and moved in together shortly after we started dating.

Of all the things we enjoyed most, we loved spending our weekends out at wineries or traveling for a short getaway. As our relationship progressed, a few of our longer vacations were out to Palm Springs, where I have family. One of our first trips out to the desert was for my birthday. Benjamin had coordinated with my aunt to ship out my favorite cake – Birthday Cake from Momofuku’s Milk Bar, of course! I was totally surprised when we went out for dinner to celebrate, and they brought out the cake. It was such a romantic gesture and so telling of Ben’s love for me. I don’t know how many other women can say that a cake was flown 3000 miles across the country for their birthday.

When Benjamin was planning to propose, he suggested that we take a day trip out to some of our favorite wineries. Apparently, he claims, the atmosphere and scenery wasn’t good enough, and he decided after our day of wine tasting to surprise me with a romantic sunset overlooking all of downtown DC from one of the nearby memorials. He started his proposal by pointing out all the places we had gone on dates, and I thought it was so sweet that he remembered all of these little details. Of course, once I realized he was proposing, I started crying and obviously said “Yes!” right away.

We knew that we really wanted to have our wedding out in Palm Springs. We had already had so many wonderful memories in Palm Springs, and we wanted to include our wedding with those other memories. After so many vacations in the desert, we knew it would be the perfect location for us. Plus, I think it was a great excuse to fly out a few more times before our wedding!

We love the outdoors and wanted to incorporate natural elements, so we were highly inspired by different textures and colors found in the desert; the pink sunsets and the warm effects of lighting on the desert sand contrasted with the palm trees and greenery. We chose our venue due to its luxurious, natural setting right against the San Jacinto mountains. To add elegance and warmth, we included hints of ivory and rose gold, featuring the beautiful lighting from the sun setting behind the mountain during our ceremony to the string of lights over the dinner tables for the outdoor reception on the lawn.

We also love the kitschy, fun vibe that Palm Springs has and that certainly inspired incorporating flamingos! As an interior designer, I’m constantly sourcing materials, and when I came across the fabulous flamingos wallpaper from Albany Wow!, I knew we had to incorporate it somehow. Our wedding planner, Joey Lizotte from Artisan, was totally on board when I asked about using it as the backdrop for our escort display. We worked with Tasha Rae Designs to establish a font and selected the blush cardstock for all our wedding guests’ names. Joey made the display extra flashy with some fun marquee letters with our initials to light up the escort board. We also tied in the flamingos with two fabulous, rose gold oversized pool floats that greeted people as they entered the venue as well as entertained our guests at cocktail hour around the pool. And lastly, we had a pair of elegant and delicate flamingos in love made by Ann Wood from hand dyed paper in the soft blush color we used throughout wedding color scheme.

So many things made our day amazing. It started with waking up in the beautiful L’Horizon Hotel. Our room looked out over the mountains and in to the beautifully manicured courtyard. It was a great backdrop to get ready for our big day. The hotel was also an awesome back drop for our first look and early photos.

Having 80+ of our closest friends and family at our wedding was also an incredible feeling and made our wedding that much more special. All of our guests were from out of town, and a majority of them flew over from the east coast. It really surprised us how many people came to support us on our a special day.

Our photographers, Stacie and Callie, were incredible and made our day so special. From capturing all of our intimate moments to making the trek out to the desert and having a fun time at the wind turbines, we couldn’t think of spending our day with any one else. Not only are our photographs insanely beautiful, but they also capture the feelings behind each moment.

I would say the most memorable moment was our first look – when I came around the corner and saw Benjamin for the first time. His face lit up, and he was seemed so wowed to see me in my wedding dress with my hair and makeup done. I asked him what his most memorable moment was, and unprompted, he said the first look as well.

I also really loved having one of my childhood friends read aloud a love sonnet by Pablo Neruda during our ceremony. It really gives a taste of love as an elusive concept that is always felt and experienced but never truly captured as a tangible thing.

I guess I can’t leave out the fact that Benjamin’s father broke out in song at our reception dinner during his speech with “God Bless America.” Ben and I just looked at each other and started laughing, while the rest of our wedding guests chimed in and started singing along. I’m sure no one else has sang this at their wedding reception!

All About Natural Light Wedding Photography

As someone who doesn’t love getting their photo taken, I’m always looking for ways to make the process and photos as natural and organic looking as possible.

So when I got to chat with Sara, the founder of onelove photography and ART IS FOR LOVERS, a highly-skilled natural light photographer (she has over 10 years experience!), I jumped at the chance.

Read on for everything I learned and all of the details about this incredibly romantic style of shooting.

What is natural light photography?
Natural light utilizes ambient light instead of artificial light, like a flash to capture moments. Often described as soft, indirect, moody black and whites, bright, and glowing—think shooting next to a window with natural, bright light as opposed to artificial.

“The soft lighting technique works especially well in garden and ranch environments,” Sara said. “Brides who like film and black and white imagery generally love natural light.”

What are the benefits to this style of shooting?
“When handled correctly, natural light is very flattering when it’s soft and indirect,” Sara said. Think “golden hour, in the shade, and near large windows and doors that flood indirect light.”

One major benefit is that it can actually make you look more attractive thanks to the light smoothing imperfections on your face. “Natural light is warmer and more approachable for the laid-back couple,” Sara shared.

Brides, if this sounds like you have no fear—natural light photography does not cost more!

What are the cons to this style of shooting?
Evening photos can be a tad moody or even grainy. “If you prefer very crisp and sharp images with flash, then you may not want to hire a natural light photographer as there will be a variety of moody and softer images captured,” Sara said.

How about evening photos?
It’s a true misconception that natural light photographers never use flash. To capture the glowing twinkle lights at your evening reception, a natural light photographer will combine background lighting with artificial camera lighting. “It takes a lot of training and experience with a professional flash to know how to do this and create a look that feels like it did when you were at the event,” Sara said.

How can you know a natural light photographer is skilled in the style?
Like any photographer you book, looking at plenty of their galleries is key. With natural light photographers, pay extra attention to photos that are similar to your venue, wedding environment, and evening photos.

From the Groom… Meaghan and I met in college; she was two years behind me in school. The first things I noticed about Meaghan were her beauty, her sense of humor, and that she liked sports. I knew I liked her from the first time we met but it took her a little while to realize she liked me. After getting turned down the first couple times I asked, she finally came around and a few months later we started dating. Our lives took us to other cities for a few years and it made staying in a relationship a challenge. But we made it and in 2015 we finally moved to the same city of Charlottesville, Virginia. It was February 2016 on the day I decided I wanted to propose to Meaghan and I wanted to do it right away. I called Meaghan’s mom Colleen and told her I wanted to have her family be there when I proposed. On Meaghan’s birthday, April Fool’s Day, her family and my family traveled in secrecy to Charlottesville to surprise her. They were situated on a rooftop deck on the downtown mall, and Meaghan and I were walking below. I got down on one knee… She said YES and the crowd went wild. I love so many things about Meaghan: her patience, her kind heart, her sense of humor, and how she puts other people’s feelings before herself. She is beautiful inside and out and there is no doubt I am the luckiest man on earth.

From Meredith Sledge… I’ve been staring at my computer screen for a while now not knowing how to express everything I feel for this precious couple and their absolutely flawless wedding day. I met Meaghan and Craig not too long ago for their engagement session at Ash Lawn Highland and I truly had so much fun at their shoot that I was sad when it ended. Their love for each other is SO evident in the way they interact and treat each other and it was the sweetest thing to watch as I photographed them. I was glad when we said goodbye that evening that I’d get to see them again a few months down the road for their wedding. Meeting my couples at the engagement session automatically makes me feel so much more connected to them and helps me tell the story better so it made me all the more excited for their wedding.

Those few months flew by faster than I thought possible and before I knew it I was driving to Mount Ida Lodge to celebrate with them on the most gorgeous fall day! I knew when Meaghan told me she was working with Cody of Amore Events, along with a slew of other amazing vendors, that her day would be stunning and I was right. The second I started shooting details that morning, my heart exploded from all the gorgeous things I was given to photograph! I especially had way too much fun styling her amazing invites by Momental Designs – what a dream!

After shooting details, we went over to the Lodge for the rest of the day. Meaghan got dressed there at the bridal suite surrounded by her ten gorgeous bridesmaids in their incredible black gowns and her family members who made me feel like I was adopted for the day. Haha! Honestly, Meaghan and Craig’s entire day was so heartfelt and memorable. Everything from Meaghan’s dad seeing her for the first time to the first look to the toasts that evening that had EVERYONE crying, made their day one that I will never forget.

I can’t go on without sharing about a moment that happened at their reception that night that really meant a lot to me and spoke volumes about how this couple cares for people. Everyone had been dancing the night away for a couple hours and the Carpe Donut truck was outside so I asked if I could pull Meaghan and Craig out really quick to take a shot of them in front of it. I told them I’d be quick so they could get back to their reception and guests. As we were walking outside, I was a little bit in front of them about to get my light set for the shots and I hear Meaghan stop and say, “You’re kidding!! Tell Meredith!” So I turned around and see them stopped in the hallway, Craig holding a dime in his hand. Craig lost his dad when he was younger and he shared with me about pennies from heaven, which is where people who have lost a loved one often find pennies (or in Craig’s family’s case – dimes) in really sentimental moments, reminding them of the person who is no longer with them. Craig told me there were numerous times when dimes had been found on really meaningful days, like his proposal to Meaghan. And a few minutes before we went out to take that photo, a friend of his had found a dime on the floor at their wedding. So I was standing there holding back tears not only because that’s an incredible story but also because Meaghan and Craig stopped everything they were doing to share that piece of their lives with me, in no hurry to get back to their reception. It told me a lot about who they are. Little moments like that when my couples care enough to invite me into their lives on a more personal level is why I love what I get to do.

This Engagement Session Might Break Pinterest, It’s So Pretty

When Rebecca Yale Photography and a stunning vineyard like Gainey are involved, you know whatever it is will be gorgeous. Add in these two cuties with their sweet smiles and classic style, and you’ve got an engagement session so inspiring that it will quite likely break Pinterest.

Claire and Adam chose to do their engagement session in Santa Ynez – one of their favorite weekend getaways from Los Angeles. They share a love of wine, so Gainey’s scenic vineyards made the perfect backdrop for the first location. The stunning grounds of Kestrel Park made for the perfect second location, as they’re reminiscent of the chateau in France the couple will be saying their “I Dos” at next summer.

Organic, Soft, Minimalist… And Oh So Magical!

I’ve been to the 1Hotel in Miami before so when this Bride stated that her and her future hubby were inspired by its gorgeous space… I knew exactly what she meant (it’s stunning to say the least). With that style in mind, they went ahead creating a wedding that was minimalist yet so magical. Kate Ignatoskwi captured it all for our lucky eyes – see more pics below and in our gallery right this way!

From the Bride… To be honest, when we started thinking about planning our wedding, all we knew was that we wanted to throw an awesome party and have a vibe that would be true to us as a couple: simple and fun!

While we are both coincidentally from Singapore, Andrew and I were set up on a blind date here in NYC and knew we wanted to celebrate somewhere in the city (also for the convenience factor!). We had went on vacation to Miami where we stayed at the 1Hotel and were obsessed with the space: minimalist, eco-friendly, and truly thoughtful service. When we found out they would be opening a 1Hotel by the Brooklyn Bridge in 2017, we knew that would be the perfect venue for our wedding. During our first visit to the event space, we wore construction hats in the dead of winter, but could already tell that it would be beautiful upon completion. The actual event space was even more beautiful than we had imagined, with marble, concrete and wood embedded with lush greenery.

Our personal aesthetic is modern: I love neutral tones, greys, asymmetry, and natural light. We left most of the actual planning to my super helpful planner, Melissa, who was able to take our idea of a “minimalist space” and turn it into a reality. On the day itself, the weather turned out perfect, and we were able to do our ceremony semi-outside overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge in front of a cool floral installation on the rocks by our fantastic florist Bourgeon. The wedding day itself flew by because we were having SO much fun with our family and friends! Fortunately, we have the most beautiful photographs by Kate to remember ALL the moments. The food, drinks, cake, service were all amazing – everyone was happily fed and hydrated. :)

A Seaside Affair Where the Bride and Groom First Vacationed

Their first road trip ever took them to a romantic light house at Castle Hill Inn so naturally when it came time to pick a venue, this duo set their sights on that very spot in Rhode Island. Combining the beauty of the seascape with classic New England details and a pretty pastel color palette, this Newport celebration captured by Sally Pinera will make you fall head over heels for the Ocean State.

From the Bride…

The Planning

Sean and I started dating in New York City almost three years ago, and since then it’s been just non-stop traveling every moment (and vacation days) we can spare. Our first road trip ever ended up being Newport, Rhode Island when we knew nothing of the place. There we randomly discovered this romantic lighthouse at Castle Hill Inn, and since then we joked about getting married there, and who knew it would become reality!

We always wanted a destination wedding so it can be a more intimate smaller group with a casual rustic vibe where our family and friends can just chill and enjoy themselves surrounded by nature like they just came on vacation. And I wanted it to be a bohemian style wedding so a Malibu winery felt perfect for this since I’m from California as well. But as I was planning without a wedding planner, we decided it was best to bring it back to the East Coast.

After some talks with Castle Hill Inn, we were lucky enough to get the perfect date on September 8th to turn it into a boho rustic Malibu winery with an entirely alfresco ceremony and reception (apparently first time ever for them to have the reception outdoors) with romantic bistro lights strung all across the lawn. Just the dancing would have to be inside the tent due to Rhode Island’s sound regulations, which turned out to be great so our guests can fully enjoy their dinner before moving inside the tent to dance.

I knew the photographer was the most important to bring that California light into the picture. Sally Pinera was perfect for the task and she delivered above and beyond our expectations and definitely brought the California sunshine onto Castle Hill Inn. We also wanted to be very minimalist with the details thereby enhancing the vintage, rustic bohemian vibe using minimal flowers with more greenery and candle lights to accentuate the natural beauty of the place. And as our theme was “Life is a journey best traveled together,” we had a world map as our guest book, vintage suitcases as the card holder and commissioned a vintage VW 77 Photo Bus as our photo booth, which our guests absolutely adored and lined up for.

The Ceremony

What was so special about our ceremony was that all of our close friends and family participating in it made it such an intimate affair. My close college friend flew over all the way from Germany and performed such a memorable ceremony for us and my high school friends’ four beautiful kids (who are all 1/4 Korean by the way) added the perfect bohemian touch with their flower crowns and Moroccon oversized baskets (just the two year old got a bit fussy and refused to wear them but at the end at least she walked down the aisle! Whew!). Our mothers provided the last touch with our Korean heritage by wearing the traditional Korean Hanbok bursting with color amongst the nude palette of the wedding party.

The Reception

We had the most romantic dinner, dining under the stars and danced our First Dance to “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” by Meghan Trainor under the bistro lights with the blessing of all of our loved ones surrounding us. Our wedding favor was High-Grade Tie Guan Yin Green Tea directly brought in from Shanghai by my Matron of Honor and had a Gourmet Espresso Bar for all of our guests as we are coffee and tea lovers and our guests all seasoned New Yorkers (or from a metropolitan city all over the world) like us with sophisticated taste in coffee and tea.

Ultimately, we just wanted to make sure we had a memorable, intimate experience with the people we love and that they have the best time, amazing food and good music to remember it by. So we asked them to wear flats instead of heels and be more casual in their attire so they can dance to the best DJ (we picked a real DJ instead of a wedding DJ) all night with a very personalized playlist handpicked by my husband himself.
