From Michael And Carina Photography… We are obsessed with intimate weddings. Celebrating surrounded by only the closest of friends and family in a more laid-back setting is just so sweet.

Trey and Amy have been best friends for the past nine years. They love everything fun and romantic. This getaway weekend for them and their closest friends and family, who all traveled to a small Virginia town on the Potomac River from their home state of South Carolina, was exactly that. A big romantic adventure to celebrate their love!

Amy was the most gorgeous bride; she looked like a movie star in her elegant gown. The soft colors and delicate details complemented their romantic vision.

They ended the celebration with a small sparkler exit and a run through an evergreen alley.

Vintage-Inspired Tuscan Villa Wedding

When I was about 13-years-old, my family took a trip to Tuscany, and it was one of the best family vacations I’ve ever been on. This gorgeous day from FunkyBird Photography and FunkyBird is taking be right back to the rolling hills of Italy and filling me with warm memories. Fall in love with everything—from the couple’s sweet love and adorable children to the beautiful al fresco reception—in THE VAULT!

From FunkyBird PhotographyWhat a cute vintage wedding in Tuscany. It was a pleasure working on this wedding which took place on the Chianti hills of Tuscany near Florence. A beautiful September day and the perfect light for wedding photographs. As a wedding photographer in Tuscany I am always looking for that perfect moment ‘the golden hour’ and on this wedding it really shines trough. The way the bride and groom, their kids and all the guests were dressed gave a really nice touch to these wedding pictures. Beautiful flowers and decorations were provided by the one and only Sonja from FunkyBird Wedding Design to lift everything up on an even higher level and made this tuscany wedding even prettier. The whole day was perfectly organized by the wonderful Roos from Trouwen in Toscane.

Colorful + Elegant Linden Place Wedding

This wedding is one thoughtful affair. From the date chosen, to the groomsmen’s socks, every detail holds significance beyond measure. For it was when the groom was on active military duty that the Bride who dreamt up the a vintage elegance celebration laced with small town charm and thanks to Emily Delamater because we’ve got it all in THE VAULT!

From the Bride… Planning for our wedding day was a much-needed distraction from the fact that William was deployed overseas. Missing him fueled my desire to create a day that celebrated our story, past, present and future. #VlovesW became more than just a wedding hashtag, but a mission to create a day that showed him just how much I love and appreciate him. From the date chosen to the color of the groomsmen’s socks, every detail had meaning.

William’s love of history and my appreciation of architectural design made Linden Place Museum the perfect venue. The fact that it was located in Rhode Island, where we first met, made it even more perfect. From there, everything else seemed to fall into place. Seriously, how could we not be married in a small seaside New England town that is home to the longest continuous 4th of July celebration in America?

Stylistically, we were inspired to create an atmosphere of vintage elegance infused with organic whimsy and undertones of patriotism. We wanted the reception to be a mixture of structured indoor dining and dancing blended with relaxed outdoor lounging. The Linden Place carriage house and rose gardens fulfilled such a desire for a fluid and open setting. Our first dance photographs taken from outside the carriage house doors embody this vision for the day. The VW Photobus parked in the gardens helped to bridge the indoor-outdoor space, and made for a playful addition that provided guests with photo-shoot entertainment throughout the night.

As I reflect on our wedding, I am overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude for the all the family and friends that made our vision a reality. Most of the décor was a labor of love involving many helping hands. From the vintage furniture, to the living family tree, the day was brimming with detailed significance and beauty.Everything about our wedding day makes my heart happy. It was the day that celebrated #VlovesW to perfection.

Organic + Industrial Wedding at 701 Whaley

Savannah and Brock, you are officially my hero. Why? Well, let’s start with the fact that you managed to plan your gorge dream wedding from opposite coasts. AH-MAZING. I honestly don’t know how you college cuties did it because your special day along with this divine gallery are too good for words. See it all for yourself captured by the talented Marcie Meredith Photography in THE VAULT!

From the Bride… Our wedding day was incredible, a beautiful day in the middle of a much longer story. Brock and I were friends from almost the instant we met at Clemson University. After several years, I came to my senses and decided to go on a date with my friend. I have never laughed so much on a first date! Brock is truly the funniest person you will ever meet. We dated for a few months after graduation from Clemson, and Brock accepted a job with a church in Seattle. Dating long distance was hard, as FaceTime replaced coffeeshop and dinner-dates for a while. But we managed to see each other in person every few months, and on December 26 of 2014, Brock asked me to marry him!

We planned our dream wedding from opposite coasts, but knew we both wanted a wedding that was about bringing all of our friends and family together to have a great time celebrating with us. Brock didn’t have much of an opinion on most things, except music and the food, but once we chose our catering company, Southern Way, it felt like that first big decision helped to move everything forward. The team at Southern Way went far above and beyond a simple menu, and spent time to sit down with me to talk through a look and feel that connected with their seriously delicious food. Their comprehensive planning process made the day feel beautifully consistent.

With the menus set, I focused on the look and feel of the decorations and wedding party. I knew I liked the idea of white flowers with bunches of greenery everywhere. I also wanted to have my bridesmaids wearing different colors and dresses, a decision that worked out well, because I gave the girls a list of dresses and colors to choose from. Each of my friends were able to pick dresses that suited their body types and color preferences, and made them feel beautiful. For my dress, I thought I wanted a tighter, lacy gown, but I walked out of the store with something completely different—it’s completely different to look at a picture than to see a dress on yourself! For the guys, Brock and I loved the look of the dark navy suits we chose.

Our venue for both the ceremony and reception, 701 Whaley, had a double advantage in helping us have a more peaceful day with no driving between venues, and a gorgeous setting that only needed to be set off by a few simple decorations. My favorite decoration was the two doors we used for a backdrop. 701 Whaley let us use the doors and our florist, Scott Jones, made them look beautiful. My friends from S. Bogan Designs hung lanterns above the alter and, gosh, it was just so perfect for us! I was thrilled with the results.

Another vendor I loved working with was our photographer, Marcie Meredith. She captured sweet moments during the day, and her shooting and editing style was exactly what I wanted. She was such a joy and ease to work with coming up to the event and on the day. The most memorable moment of the whole day was seeing Brock for the first time. I was anxious the whole morning, and a few hair-setting complications made me a little uneasy, but the moment I saw Brock everything was better, and the nervousness disappeared. It reminded me that I didn’t need to stress about the small things, and to focus instead on getting to marry my handsome man! He was so sweet and I remember him whispering in my ear how much he loved me. I’m so glad we chose to do a ‘first look’ photography session before the ceremony. It definitely helped me to calm down before the ceremony.

I loved our special day and have wonderful memories and photos of celebrating with friends and family. Although little things may be imperfect at the time, the important things for us came through—enjoying each other and our loved ones.

From Jennifer Blair Photography… Matt & Alex have had quite the journey to get to their wedding day. After meeting in Chicago they had secret crushes on each other and friends for over a year. Not long after they made things official, Alex was transferred to New York but moved to Denver to be together.

Since Alex’s family lives in Dallas and Matt’s in Denver, they decided to go for an intimate destination wedding with their closest friends and family. The 30a area has a special meaning to them since Alex’s family lived there for a time as she grew up. The design they chose for the whole day was elegantly simplistic.

Alex’s Vera Wang gown was an incredible choice for a beach wedding. Even the delicate lace detailing on the cap sleeves mimics the natural vegetation around the area the the greenery used in the bouquets. The palette of seafoam blues and greens was found everywhere from the Rosemary beach location to Alex’s getting ready robe.

The highlight of the day was the family-style reception under twinkling string lights as the sun set along the sea’s horizon. The stunningly simple cake was highlighted by an oyster-shell chandelier that hung above, which also complimented the oyster table runners on the reception tables. Alex & Matt have the sweetest love and they truly deserved to be celebrated the way they were that gorgeous, September night.

Hong Kong Couple’s New York City Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot

This gorgeous pre-wedding photo shoot could not have came across my desk at a more serendipitous time. At a time where I’m too cowardly to leave my cozy apartment in Jonas’ snowy aftermath, Cynthia Chung Weddings‘ photos are transporting me to the sunny cobblestone streets of the West Village and onto the scenic High Line, and reminding me why I love this city. Fall in love for yourself in THE VAULT!

Colors

From Cynthia Chung WeddingsIt was a pleasure photographing Karen and John around in such an awesome area of NYC in their wedding outfits. In Asia, doing “pre-wedding” photo sessions are very common. It’s when the bride and groom wear their wedding attire to do amazing portraits before the wedding day so they could showcase the photos at the wedding! Karen’s dress was amazing and having their classic and elegant black tie look amidst such an industrial and raw part of New York City was really unique and made for some amazing photographs. It also helped that we peaked in the High Line and some parts of the West Village.

From The Bride…New York was an obvious choice for us to take pre-wedding photos – Jon is a native New Yorker and I really enjoyed visiting Jon there from Hong Kong during our two year long distance relationship (thankfully we are together in one place now). The challenging part for us was where exactly in NYC to do the shoot. Jon and I have pretty similar taste – when we thought about what we like, cobble stone streets, brown stone townhouses and tree lined streets came to mind. One of our favorite neighborhoods in the city is the West Village and the High Line also has meaning for us since it’s one of the first places we visited together in Manhattan.

The pre-wedding photo shoot couldn’t have gone any better. It was very natural for us to work with Cynthia; her laid back style, knack for finding unique locations / angles to snap our pictures and positive attitude made the session really fun for us. We are extremely happy with the results and have been actively sharing her photos with our family and friends (with lots of compliments!).

For all of you out there contemplating whether to do your shoot in NYC, we would highly recommend it because believe it or not New Yorkers are very friendly – we received so many congratulations and compliments (probably because I was wearing a full on wedding gown which apparently is more of a Hong Kong thing than something common for the U.S.).

All-in-all NYC was an easy choice for us and we were extremely happy with the West Village / High Line and how our photos came out!

Elegant + Colorful Ojai Wedding

If the dress makes the Bride (or dresses in the case of this gorgeous lady), then the details definitely make this wedding. From the custom watercolor invitations and hand-painted plate table numbers to the vintage rocking chair guestbook and specialty furniture from Found Vintage Rentals to the simple, yet beautiful La Tavola Linen linens, this wedding is the very picture of California elegance. See every beautiful moment captured by Michael And Anna Costa Photography and Hoo Films in THE VAULT!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/135279985 600 338]

From Trina Schmidt Weddings & Special EventsThere’s nothing more nostalgic than the moment your childhood home becomes the perfect location for your dream wedding! This Ojai location which is called “El Rancho Adobe” was the perfect setting for Lindsey + Kevin on their special day. With the talented design and planning from Trina Schmidt Weddings & Special Events, this joyous day was captured in every detail from one of our favorites, Michael and Anna Costa Photography.

Lindsey & Kevin met by chance while living in San Francisco while she worked at the Apple store and from there, everything else seemed so natural. They exchanged their vows in front of their dearest family and friends at Ojai Presbytarian Church, then guests were shuttled to her parents’ home for an evening filled with fine food, entertainment & dancing. Inspiration for their wedding design was “California Ojai Elegance” and it was everything they had imagined with rentals from Town & Country, specialty furniture from Found Vintage Rentals, vintage china from Dish Wish and linens from La Tavola. Of course, the beautiful floral design from Keith J. Laverty was what pushed this backyard wedding over the top. Be sure to also check out the amazing cinematic highlight film from Hoo Films as it even captures an aerial view of the couple strolling through the pixie tangerine orchards that Ojai is known for. Guests dined under cafe lights and chandeliers and enjoyed the delicious food from DJs catering.

Pixie tangerine symbols were used from their invitation right down to each place setting. Art is also a big talent in the bride’s family. The letterpress invitations were custom painted using a pixie tangerine watercolor design by the bride’s aunt, then printed by Classic Letterpress. Even the maps were custom artwork. The bride’s mother is also an artist and hand-painted each plate that designated the number of each table. The 12 plates would later be a complete set for the bride & groom to use in their new home kitchen. Her cousin, also her maid of honor, was a creative inspiration throughout. In lieu of a guest book, guests signed a vintage rocking chair that would be finished after, and then find their place cards tied to light chiffon ribbons hanging from the large tree in their backyard. Lindsey always dreamt of shopping in New York City for her bridal gown, so her parents planned a special trip with her & her maid of honor. They found a perfect Alberta Ferretti the Gemma dress at Kleinfeld in NYC. For the ceremony, she wore an Allure Bridal gown purchased from Panache Bridal in Santa Barbara. Kevin wore a purchased Calvin Klein tuxedo. Bridesmaids wore Joanna August purchased at Bella Bridesmaids. Both their rings were custom designed.

Five Tips for Organizing Your Home

There is nothing like a well-organized home. It’s definitely an art, and the folks that make it happen are most definitely artists.  Well, there is no doubt in my mind that the lovely Carmel of Our Fifth House falls into that category, and she’s here to share some tried and true tips for keeping your home extra tidy (and your sanity that much more in check!).

From Carmel of Our Fifth HouseI’ve always been somewhat of an organization junkie.  I just think life works so much better when there is a method to the madness.  I wouldn’t say that every single inch of my home is the picture of organized perfection (our garage is such a pit, yikes!), but I’m slowly but surely working my way through our new-to-us house.  The really great thing is as I’m tackling new areas, everything I’ve already organized is staying in good condition which means the systems are working!  Hallelujah!   My girl’s closetmy boy’s closetmy husband’s closet and our kitchen pantry are all still looking just as great today as they were when I first shared them with you all last fall.

I’m certainly no expert, but here are five of my best tips for getting and staying organized.

1.  Don’t Be a Hoarder
Ha!  Sounds simple enough right?  ;)  I think in general we all have way more “stuff” than we actually need…..or that we’d like to admit to having.  I mean, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a collection of favorite things, but for the most part if you’re having trouble keeping things organized chances are it’s because you have too many “things” that need to be organized.  #firstworldproblems    In the words of the famous snow queen I think it’s sometimes necessary to just “let it go.”  ;)  I pretty much recommend starting any organization project with a very thorough purge.  I mean really, nobody needs 5 spatulas in their kitchen utensil drawer…..not even Ina Garten.  And I personally see no reason whatsoever to have more than 2 possibly 3 (if you live in a place where flannel is necessary) sets of sheets for a bed.  I mean, you can only use one set at a time so why bother storing bunches and bunches of extra sets?

It’s just good to start an organization project by re-evaluating what you have and determining whether to purge or keep each item.

When it comes to clothing, I do a good purge twice a year.  I go through all the closets and drawers and let go of anything that is looking a little worse for the wear and donate items the kids have outgrown.  Having a biannual system keeps things from piling up and ensures our closets and drawers are never overstuffed.

2.  Be Mindful About What You Bring Home
This really goes hand in hand with tip number one, as being mindful of the new things you bring home will keep you from becoming a hoarder.  ;)  This past fall I shared about how I keep my closet streamlined and organized by creating clothing collections.

In spite of all the fashiongrammers I’m following and the many emails I receive from clothing retailers constantly advertising sales, curating clothing collections helps me to be very selective about what I add to my closet and ultimately helps me to only purchase those items I’ll love and wear for years.

3.  Label, Contain & Make Friends with Lazy Susan
In a house full of people, labels make things easier for everyone to find.  And when things are easy for everyone to find, no one needs to ask mom where something is.  That’s a win-win in this mom’s book!

Containment in the form of baskets, bins, boxes, jars, etc are really just another way to keep you from becoming a hoarder.  ;)  In my pantry the baskets and bins also work as visual cues letting me know when I have too much or not enough of a certain thing.

And last, I have no idea why they call her lazy because she’s the farthest thing from lazy.  I use lazy susans all over the place….. in the corners of my pantry shelves, under my kitchen sink and in my bathroom cabinet to keep all of my most used products easy to find and accessible.

4.  Make It Pretty
It may seem ridiculous or completely unnecessary, but I honestly believe that when you take the time to make an organized closet, drawer or cabinet pretty, you end up doing a much better job of keeping it looking neat and tidy.  Making things pretty doesn’t have to mean spending lots of money; it could be as simple as rocking a can of spray paint or re-purposing items you already own.

5.  Create Zones
Daily life, in and of itself, can be fairly chaotic and unorganized.  I’m in this stage of life where in addition to mail I’m also fielding multiple school papers each week plus trying to stay on top of school related emails while carting kids around to various activities.  There’s no way I’d stay on top of all the correspondence and activities if I hadn’t created a “mom command center” on this unused wall in my pantry.  Creating zones in your home where you can organize and sort out mail, paperwork and schedules is so helpful.  We also have a homework zone and a bill paying zone.

So those are my five favorite tips for organizing the home.  I’d love for you to share your favorite tips in the comments section down below!

Colorful + Emotional Fall Farm Wedding

First looks aren’t for every couple, but there’s something so sweet and special about having that first moment just between you and your beloved. This lucky Bride got not one, but two first looks—one with her father and one with her future husband while all four parents looked on. Surrounded by friends and family and beautiful, rustic décor, this special day was all about celebrating this couple’s love. Experience every special moment captured by Sheradee Hurst Photography in THE VAULT!

From Sheradee Hurst PhotographyThis was one of the most intentional wedding ceremonies I’ve ever photographed. Everything served a purpose, and every detail had a deep meaning. There was no unity candle or sand, instead the couple invited the groom’s grandfather up to say a private prayer with them. It was so touching for over 300 guests to bow their heads and pray for the marriage individually while his grandfather prayed so eloquently that the couple cried.

The groom and groomsmen didn’t wear shoes. The minister spoke during the ceremony of the many instances in the Bible where men remove their shoes when they are on holy ground. He said that this was holy ground, the uniting of two souls in marriage. The bride even took every detail and made it her own. From selecting a bodice and skirt from the same designer to create her own look for her gown to the flowers that she placed on the cake herself. The bride and her dad had a first look, and then all four parents looked on while the couple had their first look. Below are the bride’s comments on why she chose what she did to create a perfectly, lovely day. This wedding photographed so beautifully on film.

From The Bride… From the beginning, Connor and I’s number one priority was that we wanted our wedding to be FUN. We wanted people to have a good time and mean it, not feel the awkward and forced atmosphere that some weddings and receptions can have, we wanted relaxed. We knew we wanted to get married outside in the evening, because we both love and are inspired by nature. I love neutral colors that are found outside, and we really used those to create natural beauty around the party. We both have sort of an eclectic and different style, so we also wanted to incorporate that into the evening, hence the mismatching and random centerpieces of odds and ends we begged for, borrowed, and (maybe) stole from friends and family.

I think our wedding day was special because we really put our hearts into each and every detail. We didn’t obsess over everything of course, but we chose colors and decorations that we liked, and didn’t stress about whether or not they would necessarily go well together. But everything came together so nicely, and I really believe it’s because it was made up of all the things we like.

Connor and I have known each other since we were freshman in high school. We were always present in each other’s lives as friends until the summer after our freshman year of college. We were both home for the summer and began spending a lot of time together. And one day, things between us were just different. It’s like we had always been there for each other and had built this great friendship in preparation for the day when the time was right for us to be more than just friends. Since that summer we’ve spent every day in love. He really is my very best friend and true love.

From Botanic Art… We are known to create blooming environments for weddings in Berlin, surrounding areas and are concentrating more and more to design weddings through-out Europe. My philosophy is and always will be to spread happiness one flower at a time.
The biggest task is to interpret the brides vision. Since every couple is unique, therefor every wedding should be just as unique and reflect their personalities. This might be the biggest challenge but also the best part. Every bouquet and every arrangement I create, conveys my passion and love for what I do. Since the bouquet is always the first piece of floral creation that the bride will see, it is definitely one my favorite and more detailed pieces I will work on.

For this particular bridal bouquet Vivian already knew her color palette. She wanted deep reds and a little bit of blush designed in a chic boho style. Once the colors are chosen, I already have my own vision in which blooms would be the right fit. Since Vivian’s elopement was in September, the dahlia, especially the ‘cafe au lait’ dahlia, was floating through my mind. How could it not! Those big blooms with its soft petals, were a must. And she loved them just as much. With a touch of the beautiful red hanging amaranthus, queen anne’s lace and the pepper berry foliage, it was a perfect combination.

From The Bride…Grant and I met by a chance of fate: I was visiting Southern California on spring break from Michigan State University for several job interviews when his dog chased a bunny into the backyard where I was relaxing. As if that wasn’t crazy enough, we soon found several coincidences between us, including the fact that his sister also happened to attend MSU and was recently married to a fellow Michigander. You can hear the whole story in our wedding video. After a big move across the country and 5 years of dating, Grant proposed on Christmas Eve, with his grandmother’s ring, in front of both of our families. It was such an incredible night, and showed just how well he knew me and that I would want everyone to be there for this joyous moment.

Although we were initially leaning toward getting married in my beloved home state of Michigan, after a lengthy discussion and look at our guest list, we realized that California was the way to go. It was hard for me at first, but ended up being the best decision. With family and friends traveling from all over the country (and world!), we thought a long holiday weekend would be ideal — one “free” day for everyone to travel and/or recover? We were sold. Plus, the upcoming Labor Day weekend just so happened to coincide with our 7th anniversary!

Once we had an idea of location and date, we began our search for a venue. My mom is actually the one who found the Loft on Pine, all the way from Michigan. We looked it up online and immediately loved the overall vibe and set up a time to check it out. From the moment we entered the building, we knew it was the place for us. The exposed brick and wood of the Great Hall were so warm and inviting and such a contrast from the stark white walls of the gallery. It was a blank canvas –perfect for what I was envisioning– and checked off every item on our list. The best part? It was in Long Beach, the place we met, fell in love, and have built a life together, so what better place to have all our favorite people join us to celebrate the beginning of our next chapter as husband and wife.

When discussing the look and feel we wanted for the big day, Grant and I kept coming back to the idea of an elaborate, yet intimate dinner party with all of our loved ones at a giant table, drinking, dancing, and eating in a haze-filled night full of love and laughter. We wanted it to be chic, timeless and sophisticated while still being wildly fun, effortless and laid back — no stuffiness allowed! We decided to forego the idea of a traditional “theme” and instead use a black & white color palette to create our overall vibe: classic with a twist.

Since the Loft itself has so much character, I thought it would be best to keep the overall decor simple and highlight the space’s natural beauty. With the addition of custom black and white art, gold bits’n’bobs, white blooms, greenery and an abundance of candlelight, the Loft became an extension of our home: modern and classic, masculine and feminine, funny & sentimental. My mom and I collected all sorts of pillows, blankets, spheres, orbs, terrariums, vases, candlesticks, etc. and had a major spray painting party on one of her trips to help out. We also created a light feature to be the focal point for both the ceremony and reception, and it shimmered and glowed perfectly behind us throughout the night.

As a graphic designer (and wannabe event planner), all of the little details were very important and easily my favorite part of the wedding creative process, especially when it came to the paper goods. I went a little nutty and designed our save the dates (one for California and one for Michigan), invitation suite, an invitation for the Michigan reception, matchboxes, out of town bags, itineraries, welcome notes, “do not disturb” signs, sweets bags, menus, programs, and all of the custom art that was sprinkled throughout the space. Once I got started it was really hard to stop.

I am very lucky to have the most amazing and talented parents. No matter the level of “crazy” of my next DIY idea, they were game, making multiple trips out to the West Coast to help us tackle each project. Practically everything at the wedding and reception was either made by me, my parents or, a combination. My dad sculpted my “Mrs. Hauxhurst” hanger, complete with a hand-stamped heart with our wedding date. Together we made over 50 mini burro pinatas for the rehearsal dinner fiesta, curated and planted all of the succulents that were placed around the space, spray painted 110 envelope edges, created a giant sequin heart that sparkled over the fireplace in the lounge area (easily over 10,000 sequins on that bad-boy — it’s hanging in my office now!), wood-burned cigar boxes for the groomsmen, the sequin hangers for each bridesmaid, escort card holders, hand-folded and stuffed our invitations, and so much more.

In addition to my wonderful parents, Grant and I are surrounded by a multitude of other fabulously gifted and generous friends and family. My aunts would get together at my parent’s house in Michigan to help make crafts and mail them to us; the custom hanky embroidery, my Arsenal (Grant’s favorite futbol team) garter, flower girl tutus, our invitation calligraphy, homemade chocolate chip cookies and so many other things were all created by our loved ones. We are beyond lucky and so grateful to everyone who pitched in.

When it came to attire, Grant and I couldn’t agree more: classic. classic. classic. I was determined to find something grand–the type of dress that I would never get the opportunity to wear again. Friends and family members were all pushing for me to choose a more form-fitting gown, but I had something else in mind. I wanted vintage, yet modern–the type of dress my daughter would one day want to wear. I found that in my Hayley Paige. The classic shape combined with the graphic nature of the layers and horse-hair had me sold. For the bridesmaids, I gave them a short list of guidelines and let them go for it, which easily could’ve been a disaster with 11 such different women. Luckily, it turned out better than I could have ever hoped for; each of them selected an amazing gown that not only fit their personality and individual beauty, but also went together seamlessly. By sticking with classic black tuxes and floor length black gowns, I think we achieved a look that will withstand the test of time. We love that we will look back on our wedding in 50 years and not see outdated trends. All of the gentlemen loved their classic black tuxes and looked dashing on the big day. I’m beyond glad that we decided to forego the vest and went with suspenders instead; they looked so sharp when the jackets came off. And our ring bearer in his little tux and flower girls in their tutus and gold bows? I just die over the cuteness — we have the cutest nieces and nephew!

Speaking of our lovely wedding party, Grant and I were initially given a lot of grief for having such a large group, that it would be too much to wrangle and a total headache. It was anything but. Grant said that if our biggest problem was being surrounded by “too many” loved ones as we take this next step, we’re probably doing okay and that really stuck with me. We are very lucky to have such loving family and friends that made everything so easy — we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

What we wanted more than anything was to spend time with our guests and for them to feel like they were a part of our weekend and not just another number on the list. We achieved this by keeping our guest count as low as we could (110) and by hosting events throughout the weekend for everyone to get to know each other. There was a golf day for the guys, welcome cocktails (and Michigan State season opener!), the main event, an epic after-party at a speakeasy and brunch the following morning at our favorite pub. It was really lovely to see all of the new friendships formed over the weekend.

The best (and most challenging) part for me was the fact that I was both the bride and the designer. But that’s why it is so important to hire and work with vendors that you know you can trust — with florals in the hands of our dear friend Lindsay (of the Eleventh Flower) and Day-of-Coordination with Allie of Pop The Champagne, I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about a thing! Sure, there are always hiccups the day-of, but because of their expertise, I didn’t know about any of it until well after the last dance had ended.

Photography and videography were very, very important to us and we wanted to find someone who could capture us as a couple as well as all of those little details and the candid, in-between moments of the day. Some photographers seemed so stiff, others too filtered/edited, but when I came across Jen of B&G Photography, her work blew me away — plus she has the best name ever, haha! Grant loved how comfortable the couples looked and I loved how sharp and clean her shots were. After meeting her, we knew she was the photographer for us — she really knows her stuff and immediately put us at ease. On the big day, she was INCREDIBLE. With a huge group of people and a long list of shots, Jen remained calm and made the day go incredibly smoothly even when our timeline got a little crunched.

One of the biggest pieces of advice that we received was that if we could find the room in our budget for a videographer, we should go for it, and I am so glad that we did. Austin did a great job of telling our whole story while capturing both our sentimental and silly sides. He went above and beyond and was even hanging out of his car window in order to get the shot at certain times! We are especially grateful to Jen and Austin for all of the moments captured with Grant’s Nana, who passed away shortly after we were married. The images and video are so special because they live on after that one day in our lives and bring us back to so many happy moments.

The ceremony itself was just lovely — probably our favorite part of the whole day. Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” played during the processional, followed by one of my very best girlfriends (and hair stylist!), Elise, surprising everyone by singing an acapella version of The Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” as I walked down the aisle. It was such a special moment. Grant and I were married by my uncle, which made for an incredibly intimate and personal service. We met and worked with him on the entire script, but he added a few snippets that were a wonderful surprise and made the ceremony that much more special. Both of our parents have been married for over 40 years, so we wanted to pay homage by reciting the traditional vows they proclaimed and also dedicating our wedding to them and the wonderful example they have set.

After that, we headed off for a quick ride around town on a classic trolley with our wedding party while guests enjoyed cocktail hour, featuring canapés and his-and-hers signature margaritas, our favorite drink. Upon our return, Grant and I headed upstairs alone to see the Great Hall transformed and take a moment together to let it all soak in. Seeing it all come together was so overwhelming, it took our breath away. Our team of vendors did such an amazing job making it all come to life. Our guests soon joined us upstairs and we enjoyed a delicious end-of-summer 3-course meal that we customized with the help of our caterers, topped off with LA-style street dogs (yes, bacon-wrapped, with peppers and onions!) from a local grill cart as our late night snack. Our DJ had the dance floor packed through the night to a mix of new and old songs and the photo booth was never empty.

We wanted it to be a fun, unforgettable party celebrating the beginning of our married life together. The planning process was a blast, extremely hard and time-consuming, overwhelming at times, but downright amazing. With the help of our parents, friends, family and bridal party, we had the most wonderful celebration. There is no way we could have pulled this off without them.

From Christie Pham PhotographyCynthia and Andrew first met and started dating in Brooklyn, New York. After getting engaged, they were torn between having their wedding in Brooklyn, where they first met and now live, or in Hawaii, where Andrew grew up. They ultimately chose Hawaii for it’s natural, breath taking beauty and their desire to have a laid back celebration. Cynthia and Andrew chose a neutral theme with plenty of green foliage and ivory flowers to match their beautiful wedding venue at the ocean-front estate, Lanikuhonua. They included their own personal touch by incorporating little references to their favorite videos, games, TV shows, and movies into their wedding stationery, invitation, and décor.

As an accomplished food blogger of Two Red Bowls, who has been featured in Food & Wine, SAVEUR and the Cooking Channel, Cynthia would naturally gravitate to making her own wedding party favors – delectable coffee-candied macadamia nuts!

We were so incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to be a part of Cynthia and Andrew’s wedding and to work alongside some of Hawaii’s amazing wedding professionals who were able to help create a lovely wedding for two amazing people.

Bananas Foster Pop Tarts

I dare you to put out a plate of these pop-tarts in your kitchen and not touch them. Impossible! My mouth was literally watering as I wrote this post thinking how good these would go with a Saturday morning cup a joe. And thanks to Aimee Broussard, that breakfast dream can become a reality right now. Get the recipe below!

Bananas Foster Pop Tarts

total time
20 Minute/s
Serves 0Ingredients
  • 1 refrigerated pie crust (containing 2) or make homemade
  • Filling:
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar ( I used light but would've preferred using dark)
  • 2 ripe bananas, cut into ¼-inch rounds
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup dark rum
  • Glaze:
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • brown sugar (for topping)
Instructions
  1. Place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet and set aside.
  2. Begin by rolling out your pie crust. Cut into rectangles approximately 5 inches long by 3 inches wide. Cut 2 pieces for each pop tart.
  3. Melt the butter and sugar in a saute pan over medium heat until the butter has melted and the sugar is combined. Add bananas, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and vanilla, and cook, stirring, for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove pan from heat and add the run. NOTE: If you add the rum to the hot liquid and using a gas range, the vapors will ignite so be careful.
  4. Add about 1-1½ tbsp of mixture to each of the pop tart bases, careful not to extend to the edges. Place the 2nd layer of pie crust on the top of the bananas mixture and crimp the edges with a fork and pierce the center of the pop tarts to vent.
  5. Bake at 425 degrees for 8-10 mins or until the pop tarts are golden brown. Allow to cool for at least 5 minutes before adding the glaze.
  6. To make the glaze, simply combine 1 cup confectioners sugar and 2-3 tbsp of water to get the consistency desired. Add the water gradually (1 tsp at a time) and whisk vigorously- add more water as needed. Add ½ tsp of imitation rum to the glaze. Pour the glaze over the pop tarts and sprinkle with brown sugar. Serve warm!

What to Do When You Love the Man But Hate the Ring

I like to think that when the perfect man gets down on one knee and asks me to be his forever, I won’t care what the ring looks like. But, if I’m going to be wearing one ring for the rest of my life, I should love it, like really love it, right? Yes, you’re marrying the man (or woman) and not the ring, but how do you tell someone you love that you hate their taste in fine jewelry? We’ve got you covered.

[dotted]

Take a Deep Breath

After the proposal, emotions are running high! But by all means, don’t mention right away that you’re less than thrilled with the sparkler he picked out! The last thing you want is to completely deflate your guy! Consider it this way, if you planned the perfect surprise and picked out the ultimate gift, and he told you he didn’t like it right off the bat, how would you feel? Broach the topic slowly and in private.

Tell the Truth , But Be Gentle

Honesty is the key to any healthy relationship, and remember, you’re saying yes to the man, not the ring! But, it’s OK to tell your now-fiancé (!) how you feel about the rock as long as you do so carefully and gracefully. Everyone’s favorite etiquette maven, Emily Post, says, “You need to speak to your fiancé about your distaste for the ring style. Tactfully explaining that you can’t see yourself wearing this style of ring might eliminate his feeling bad if he chose the ring himself. Above all, be sensitive to your fiance’s feelings, as he may have chosen the ring with the utmost care and thoughtfulness, and may react to your wanting to change the ring with mixed emotions.”

Work Together to Find a Solution

Adding on and taking away details of your ring is easier than you think. Sure, you’ll pay the cost for an update, but in the long run you want to truly love a piece you’ll be wearing every day. Is your band silver and you wanted gold? Have your jeweler update the setting. Or, suggest that the two of you go shopping together and find something both of you love. Want something a little more wow? Consider holding off a few years until you have kids, and add stones to the side of your solitaire to represent your sweet babies.

Learn to Love It

You might not like the ring at bended knee, but who knows? It might grow on you! Some stones look different on than in the ringbox. Give it a few weeks and if you’re really set on switching, be sensitive to your sweetie’s reaction. Keep things in perspective and remember what the ring represents: your love and commitment to one another.
