Rustic + Elegant Sharksmouth Estate Summer Wedding

Choosing a venue that’s a blank state can be daunting, but it can also lead to an absolutely incredible wedding. Take, for example, this gorgeous Bride and Groom, who chose the Sharksmouth Estate to play host to their rustic and elegant wedding. Bringing in farm tables, bistro lighting and accents of wood and gold, they created the day of their dreams. See it all from Hello Love Photography in The Vault!

From The Bride…From the time we got engaged, our goal was to create a weekend that genuinely felt like “us” and most importantly would be fun for all of our guests. We were drawn to a non-traditional venue where we had the freedom to create exactly what we envisioned. We decided to create an environment of “rustic elegance” at the old stone estate, with farm tables, lots of wood/gold accents, and bistro lighting. I took on a couple of DIY projects and this was one of my favorite parts of planning – I was so excited to share all of these details with our friends and family!

Intimate Foraged Garden Wedding Inspiration

Inspired by the idea of a bride foraging for her flowers the early morning of her wedding day, Cody Hunter captured a scene straight out of a storybook. From the Alexandra Grecco gown (care of Everthine Bridal Boutique) to tables decked out in La Tavola linens and Elleson Event’s romantic design, it’s what comes to mind when you drift off to wedding wonderland. Travel there via our Vault right this way!

From Cody Hunter Photography… Together with designer Hollie from Elleson Events, our bride tells the story of her forage inspired garden wedding. The beautiful English Cottage home and gardens (the historical Peach Tree House) was the inspiration for everything. Using elements from her own backyard garden, the bride spends her morning foraging the elements of her big day. Building her bouquet from backyard greenery like variegated tree ivy, garden roses, ranunculus, blushing bride protea, and white peonies, she sets the tone for her intimate affair. Relying on the natural beauty of her surroundings and the organic and muted color scheme of the garden, the aesthetic focuses on various greenery, white, creams and soft dove grey. For the bride’s gown, she chose Alexandra Grecco with small floral details on the sheer bodice, for a soft and ethereal secret garden feel.

Your New Go-To for Easy Daytime Hair

I’ll never look at bobby pins the same now that I’ve been introduced to the best new hairstyle in all the land. Dreamed up by Brittany Messner of Life Set Sail + Drybar, it’s a super simple do that takes mere minutes soup to nuts. Quick, totally chic daytime hairstyles that aren’t bun related = my love language. Get the simple how-to photographed by Justine Milton below and prepare to become BFF’s with your trusty old bobby pins.

From Brittany Messner of Life Set Sail… I’ve partnered with Drybar to bring you an easy how-to for one of this seasons hottest trends, exposed bobby pins. I’ve actually been doing this since as far back as high school with my weapon of choice, gold toned bobby pins. Needless to say, I’m a big fan.

Word-Numbers_02 Part hair to side and apply a heat protectant. I used Hot Toddy, which is a lightweight heat and UV protectant.

Word-Numbers_04 Curl one inch sections of hair away from your face and allow to cool. For loose, tousled curls I love the 3 Day Bender 1″ Barrel Digital Curling Iron for it’s easy to use rotating barrel and fast heat up/cool down time.

Word-Numbers_06 Finger comb hair to break up curls.

Word-Numbers_18 Mist hair with salt spray. The Mai Tai Spritzer does a phenomenal job of creating added texture and volume…oh yah, and it smells incredible.

Word-Numbers_12 Pull back bang heavy side and pin. You can do this whichever way you like, but for this particular look I’ve gone for three X’s. If you want them even it’s easiest to pin each one side of each X first before crossing over with the other side.

Word-Numbers_15 Finish with a light-hold hairspray like the Money Maker Flexible Hold Hairspray to keep unwanted frizz at bay.

Optional: If you’d rather go for a smooth, less textured look you can skip the salt spray/hairspray and create a glossy finish with the Sparkling Soda Shine Mist.

Classic New England Nantucket Greenhouse Wedding

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, couples like this prove that the element of surprise is still very much alive in the wonderful world of weddings. Giving true meaning to a green wedding, this elegant greenhouse celebration is bursting with organic details and one seriously chic nursery reception. It’s homegrown meets high class and thanks to Christine Doneé, we’ve got it all waiting for you in The Vault

From Christine Doneé… I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Addie and Andrew for a couple of years now, so when asked to photograph their wedding, I was beyond honored to be a part of this special moment in their relationship. The two of them are down to earth, genuine, warm and extremely kind – they’re just the kind of people that leave a positive mark on your life. And their wedding was no exception.

The ceremony was beautiful and simple, with guests seated at the old Quaker Meeting House and a violinist playing melodies that filled the room with joy and anticipation. Andrew’s dad officiated the ceremony, which made the intimate setting feel even more special. There were tears and laughter, applause and prayers, and Addie’s infectious smile set the tone for the rest of the day.

Having lived on Nantucket for years, the bride and groom wanted their guests to see the Nantucket that the two of them cherish so much. So while we ran off for the formal portraits, the guests were shuttled to Bartlett’s Farm for cocktails and local craft beer in the nursery. The flowers and plants from the farm made up the decor and brought a sense of life and color to the evening. With the sun filtering in through the pergola, a golden warmth filled the room that I can still feel today.

Just off of the nursery was the greenhouse where the reception took place. Paper lanterns, potted plants and cafe lights adorned the room. And while everyone sat at round tables, the meal was served “family style” for a communal and intimate feel. As with everything else, Addie and Andrew created a menu that was intentional and organic, with most of the produce coming from the farm itself. Guests passed around serving dishes and joined in a festive meal together, making you feel like you were at a good friend’s house for dinner.

As the sun was setting, I took the bride and groom out to an open field for portraits were they could have a moment to themselves and take in the day. Once the sun dipped below the horizon and we made our way back towards the greenhouse, we could hear the laughter and chatter from across the farm. It was an incredible celebration of these two people, surrounded by friends and family who truly loved them, and a wedding day that represented exactly who they were.

A Pretty Pink New Year’s Eve Wedding

If you ask me, getting married on New Year’s Eve is ALWAYS a good idea. Especially for the couple who can’t resist a good party. Playing on the Quirk Hotel’s unique design aesthetic, this couple crafted a celebration anchored in elegance with tasteful, modern flair. Thanks to photography by Jillian Michelle and Katelyn James it’s nearly impossible for me to pick just one favorite moment from the gallery, but that first look on the rooftop? Well, that just might win.

From Jillian Michelle PhotographyCalvin and Brittany’s wedding took place on New Year’s Eve at the brand new Quirk Hotel in downtown Richmond, VA. This gorgeous hotel was the perfect backdrop for the classy and intimate wedding that Brittany and Calvin always dreamed of! They had their (emotional and SO sweet) first look on the rooftop of the hotel overlooking the entire city and they danced the night away under the stars in the hotel’s open-air courtyard. The girls wore beautiful ivory, floor-length gowns with fur stoles, while the men were dressed to the nines in black tuxes. From the hotel’s soft color palate, the checkered marble floors, and the cobble stone streets, the day was filled with so much class and charm!

Katelyn James and I (Jillian Michelle) are long-time friends who happened to go to college together with the groom, Calvin! We were so honored when they asked us BOTH to photograph the wedding! I photograph both film and digital while Katelyn shoots solely digital so we truly took a hybrid approach with this wedding! We hope you love this sweet couple’s wedding as much as we do!

From The Bride… Ironically, considering our New Years Eve wedding, timeless. I envisioned classic, elegant, formal and romantic. I didn’t know where or when but I did know there would be brass instruments, tuxes, and plenty of champagne. We also envisioned our wedding as an opportunity to bless others, so we tried our hardest to feature our favorite local businesses and business owners.

We incorporated very little color into our wedding. We wanted sharp contrast between the bridesmaids and groomsmen, to mirror the distinction of my white dress against my husband’s black tux. The bridesmaids wore champagne floor-length dresses, light rabbit fur stoles, and neutral jewelry accents of pearls, diamonds and crystals, to match the beading on my gown. We kept with neutral touches in the floral arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres – white hydrangea, white and cream roses. At the reception, we chose white linens and added accents of brass and gold for arrangement holders, signs, candles and clocks. At midnight, pearl white, clear, gold and champagne balloons fell from above the ball-lit white and ash marble dance floor.

Instead of using a traditional guestbook, which we anticipated boxing up after the wedding, we selected a coffee table book featuring our honeymoon destination. We had guests sign throughout the pages and pictures, and we’ve loved displaying it in our home, as well as looking through it after our adventures in Italy!

I wore “Simone” by Sottero and Midgley. I tried to deny her while trying on all the satin and lace Urban Set Bride (bridal boutique in Richmond, Virginia) had to offer. One thing I definitely didn’t envision for my wedding was a beaded gown. While I love a good wow-factor, I tend to shy away from glam. The combination of beaded embroidered lace over a satin slip dress, not to mention the Swarovski crystals, just screamed New Years Eve. The ivory and light gold fit perfectly with our color palette, and with my Kate Spade princess heels in ivory satin.

The flowers were hand-picked by myself and my maid of honor’s mother, Andrea McDaniel. I guided with a few favorite blooms, colors and a general design for arrangement, and she executed flawlessly. One of the hardest parts of planning your own wedding, in my opinion, is not being available day-of to direct and decorate. Andrea was an extension of myself – of all of my hopes and dreams for every floral and decorative detail of our ceremony and reception site – simple, sleek, stunning. At the request of neutral with frosty, overflowing greenery, Andrea selected Hydrangea, Tulips, Spray roses, Stock, Lisianthus and Freesia in white, accompanied by Vendela roses, Ghobi cream roses, Waxflower, Hypericum, Dusty Miller, Seeded Eucalyptus, Nandina and Camellia leaves.

The cake was designed and baked by two of my bridesmaids, Siobhan Cooper and Christina Aquilina. They captured the style and flavor of our wedding in every tier – almond cake with almond buttercream on the bottom layer, princess cake with vanilla buttercream in the middle, and chocolate cake with almond buttercream on top. Frosting designs included ribbon, pearl and star, with finishing touches of disco dust on the top layer with a few floral accents to tie it all together. Siobhan and Christina also baked our equally impressive groom’s cake, a recreation of my husband’s favorite drink, the Moscow Mule – complete with copper mug, frosted cake chunks for ice cubes and a cookie made into a lime wedge. Entirely edible and utterly delicious.

My advice for other brides it to not be afraid to ask for help – you are going to need it, whether you want it or not. I’m stubborn, particular, and don’t like putting people out. When I wouldn’t ask for help, people offered, and it was a great blessing and relief to let myself say yes. A wedding is a union – let people come together to support and celebrate yours. A wedding is also a beautiful time of discovery, one of our favorites being how rich we are with generous and loving friends and family members. Give your loved-ones the opportunity to care for you, and witness your relationships deepen and grow. Those relationships will carry you through one of the busiest but happiest times of your life.

NYFW Gowns We Can’t Wait to See Rock the Red Carpet

I’ll be honest, I don’t actually like awards shows, but I love love love Awards Season. Why, you ask? The fashion. Red carpet gowns are what I live for (besides weddings, of course). And after seeing the fashions that came down the runways at Paris Haute Couture Week and this past week at New York Fashion Week, I’m more excited than ever for this year’s Oscars. See why below.

Rustic, Romantic Wedding at The Villa San Juan Capistrano

Fall weddings may be my favorite but that doesn’t mean I go gaga over bright orange pumpkins and decoupaged leaves. Take this wedding right here as cue for how to do autumn affairs perfectly. Captured by Koman Photography and Love & You Video, this romantic wedding is full of subtle seasonal florals and decor, and these pics are single handedly taking over my ‘Fall Wedding‘ Pinterest board pronto. See all the gorgeous goods in our Vault right here!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/150559937 600 338]

From the Bride… To be honest, I never saw myself getting married and then all that changed when I met my husband, Charlie. It took about three dates for us to realize we were meant for each other and six months later, Charlie proposed. (Spoiler alert: I said yes!). From the moment we got engaged, we agreed that our wedding needed to reflect our personalities and taste. Our choices were based on feelings vs. traditional expectations. We did what felt like us, which ended up being an elegant, romantic party to celebrate our love with close friends and family. When we started the search for venues, I was having a tough time connecting with any location because nothing felt special. I had no preconceived notions about what I wanted nor how it had to be but I figured I would just know when I found it. Like when I met Charlie… I just knew. The minute I walked into the Villa San Juan Capistrano, everything started to click and I got a sweet warm buzz. For the first time, I could envision my wedding day. The Villa is a timeless and effortlessly stunning space. I had the perfect man and now I had a gorgeous backdrop for us to become husband and wife. (I know, I know, insert eye roll here).

Not gonna lie, it was a lot work and there were some frustrating moments but we wouldn’t change a thing about our wedding day. We had the most perfect day and it all still feels like a dream! While I don’t think there is anything that can fully prepare someone for the overwhelming emotions that come with a wedding (not to mention the days leading up to it), my hope for other brides is to try to remember the little, important moments that take place. Soak in every minute because it all goes by so quickly. The most valuable piece of advice I received was from my best friend/Maid of Honor. She said, “Try not to get so caught up in the wedding that you forget to be excited about the marriage.” That really hit home and helped me refocus on what mattered when things got stressful. It’s hard to believe it took 11 months to plan something that is over in just five hours but you make memories that will last the rest of your life.

With the help of some amazing vendors, Charlie and I were able create a wedding day that stayed true to who we are as people and was reflective of our love. It was a massive effort, handmade details (thanks to my bestie) and everyone in the family pitched in to make it happen. We wanted it to be an experience rather than an event – a place to make memories. I think we nailed it.

Glamorous Woodsy Winter Wedding Inspiration

There’s really too much goodness in this shoot to sum up it’s beauty in a few sentences. You’ll have to let The Vault speak for itself. The planning genius of Laurel & Elm and the bloom creations by Splints & Daisies will leave you hanging on the edge of every detail captured by Brianna Wilbur Photography. Oh, and did I mention there’s a roasted marshmallow cake (à la The Pennsylvania Bakery) involved? To die.

From Brianna Wilbur PhotographyThis bridal inspiration shoot was designed around the idea of mixed metals and our version of glamorous boho fashion. We wanted this shoot to be centered around the clashing idea of mixed metals and our goal was to make a beautiful harmony of the uncommon pair. We added lush, whimsical winter greens, an ethereal simple grey wedding gown, and a wintery dessert bar with a roasted marshmallow cake, fudgey cookies, hot cocoa, and a blanket station. Mother nature didn’t deliver winter snow as we had expected for this time of year but she did give us some of the most beautiful golden light so we cannot complain. We hope this offers creative, romantic, cozy, whimsical inspiration for all the woodsy lovin’ brides out there who still desire a glamorous affair! I hope you love this as much as we do!

Celebrating 30 Years with Champagne + a Killer Dessert Bar

The big 3-0  is a major milestone and not one that should go without celebration. It deserves all the champagne and all the desserts. And that is precisely what Joy, the birthday girl did. But added to all the bubbly and sweet treats were some super cute adult coloring books. Because obviously those are 30th birthday musts too. See all the festivities snapped by Katie Parra Photography in the VAULT.

From Katie Parra… Joy’s thirtieth birthday was such a treat to photograph. Adult coloring books, karaoke, good food, champagne and a killer dessert table…that my friends is the recipe to an excellent birthday party! Joy is so talented. She designed the invitation, the coloring books and did all the flowers for the event herself. I particularly loved the original painting of Joy for the back of her invite created by her friend and artist Matt Forsythe. Talk about an excellent way to ring in your thirties!

From the birthday girl… I wasn’t sure that I wanted to do anything big for my thirtieth. My husband, Josh, and I were fairly new to Seattle, and didn’t know the city too well. However, one night on our way to a baseball game, we happened to drive by The Coterie Room. I only glimpsed it for a few seconds, but I knew I wanted to have my birthday in that beautiful space. From there I began to plan. I basically thought of all the things I love to do with my friends, and made that into my party: getting dressed up, eating good food, karaoke.

Vintage Romance at Murrieta’s Well

My cure for the winter blues? Loads of California sunshine, blooms from Laura Miller Design and a happy blush palette that’ll leave you aching for a warm summer day. It comes in the form of these romantic captures by Jasmine Lee Photography, complete with a lacy Essense of Australia number. Dive into The Vault to feel the glow!

From Jasmine Lee PhotographySoft ivory lace, creamy pink chiffon bridesmaid dresses, vintage lead crystal and gold accents, this vintage inspired wedding oozes romance! This wedding was full of perfect details made to accent the gorgeous venue at Murrieta’s Well in the Livermore wine country. And of course, Jasmine Lee Photography worked her magic behind the lens and beautifully captured all the details and emotion of the day.

From The Bride…We wanted the wedding to feel personalized, intimate and full of heirloom treasures and romance. We individually collected all of the vintage crystal vases, candle sconces, and completed a variety of DIY projects such as the lace table runner down the length of the head table, the table numbers, signage and wedding favors. We chose Murrieta’s Well for it’s nostalgia. We wanted our wedding in the Livermore wine country because it was where we met and ultimately fell in love. I obtained a lot of my inspiration from my dress and vintage crystal jewelry. I wanted all of the details to reflect the beauty of the wine country in the summer.

The wedding was styled by the uber talented Laura Miller Design. She used stunning pastel florals and draped gorgeous garlands over the bride and groom’s chairs. She beautifully captured the essence of the vintage inspired look. Also, Wente vineyards did an incredible job to make the day run smoothly and beautifully.

Whimsical

From Jennifer Tai Photo ArtistryKathryn and Max, with wedding planner extraordinaire Lisa Chambers of Chambers & Co, created an elegant yet quirky evening of celebration featuring their beloved dog, Douglas (or Dug)!

Held at the beautiful Dunn Gardens, the wedding felt like a private backyard affair. At the center was a flag-cloth tent from Cort Rentals, which at the time was the only company that had the service of renting and installing. Lisa, her team and the ladies from Lola Creative did an amazing job with the florals with paper flowers at the ceremony, and arrangements of coral and teal at the reception.

Herban Feast welcomed Kathryn and Max’s guests with a festive and colorful mimosa bar before the ceremony. Dinner was a creative showcase of bento boxes created with the bride and groom’s faves and dessert an ice cream buffet bar – all of which Doug hovered over protectively.

The highlight of the evening, among other things, was the unique karaoke DJ, helmed by the lovely Chrissy Williams. Everyone loves a good karaoke session with a spot of dancing mixed in from time to time.

It was a beautiful wedding to document from start to finish, laid back yet intricate, just as a backyard wedding should be. The best part was that Dug was the star of it all!

From the Couple… Max and I are huge nerds. We met online while playing a role-playing video game. We battled digital monsters and quested for rare treasures for about six months before deciding to meet in person. The designated location? A Japanese anime convention…dressed in costumes as our favorite characters. (Nerd alert!) When we met, he was relieved that I turned out to be an actual girl. I was relieved that he had a decent face.

Many years later we decided to tie the knot. We got an adorable dog named Douglas somewhere along the way. He was the inspiration for our wedding. Mainly because we couldn’t figure out how to incorporate both of our nerdy hobbies into the wedding, in a way that we wouldn’t regret in the future (Think: Full-blown Star Trek themed wedding complete with phasers instead of bouquets). Also because our lives revolve around that 110 pound mutt. He is many breeds, including: St. Bernard, Husky, German Shepherd, and Mastiff. Including Douglas in the wedding was easy. I have to give a lot of credit to our amazing wedding planner Lisa Chambers from Chambers and Co. She was such an enabler in the planning process–even inviting Douglas to all the planning sessions! It was no wonder he became such a (literally) huge part of our big day. First, he was assigned the role of ring-bearer. Next, our stationery designer Sheryl of Paper Moxie included him in our invitations. Then, the place cards turned into his silhouette. Our floral designers Emily and Flick from Lola Creative got in on the fun and added him to many parts of the decor, such as the decorative pillows for the seating as well. We tried to sprinkle some subtle details with Douglas throughout our wedding too (e.g. Max’s lapel pin, bar menu holders).

The actual wedding day was a whirlwind of fun and festivities–at the end of the day I couldn’t believe that it flew by so quickly! We enjoyed being with our small, tight-knit group of friends and family. Good food and drinks, dancing, karaoke, ice cream for dessert, and our cuddly pup right there with us the whole time–we wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Glamorous Newport Rosecliff Mansion Wedding

This glamorous Newport wedding is an absolute fairytale—the Rosecliff Mansion setting, the Carolina Herrera gown, and gorgeous hand-lettering from Laura Hooper Calligraphy. And, if this day is a fairytale, then the fairy godparents were Details With Love, who planned the whole fabulous affair, and Christian Oth Studio, who captured it all beautifully. See all the pretty in The Vault!

From The Bride…Joe and I were reluctantly (mostly on my part) set up by two of our best friends. They had been dating for a few months, and put their heads together to try their hand at match making. Fortunately for us, it worked. When we began dating I was living in Boston and Joe was living in Rhode Island. Since we couldn’t see each other all the time, we spent our weekends checking out the latest foodie spots in Boston, walking around gorgeous little Back Bay neighborhoods, and spending summer weekends in Newport.

Joe proposed almost three years to the day that we began dating. We had dinner at the North End restaurant where we had our first official date. He proposed in the governor’s suite at the Boston Harbor Hotel surrounded by roses and candlelight. It was nothing short of amazing.

When it came time to select a location for our wedding, we wanted somewhere that was not only meaningful to us as a couple, but also a place that could serve as a weekend getaway full of fun and festivity for our guests. A summer wedding in Newport immediately came to mind.

While we knew we wanted a wedding that embodied our fun loving, laid back personalities, we also wanted a formal venue that evoked the grandeur of Newport’s history. As soon as we drove up the majestic tree lined driveway of Rosecliff, we knew it was the perfect spot. And let’s face it, there’s nothing better than wearing a fabulous outfit while drinking champagne in Jay Gatsby’s home!

We wanted our wedding to feel classic, romantic, and glamorous, with a vintage twist. The design ascetic of the wedding began with selecting my lace, peach toned, Carolina Herrera gown. To me, the dress embodied everything that I wanted my wedding to evoke – softness, glamour, and old world beauty. From there we selected amazing hand calligraphy Sugar Paper wedding invitations, swapping out the matching white envelope for a peach one. We also chose flowing, off the shoulder Amsale bridesmaid dresses in a similar color.

It was very important to us that we let the beauty and grandeur of Rosecliff speak for itself. We collaborated with Dennis Delsignore of Stoneblossom Floral and Event Design to create a soft, romantic color palate throughout. We utilized florals in shades of cream, blush and peach, with accents of greenery and draping dendrobium orchids. Touches of gold were utilized throughout to bring in the amazing ceiling and fixtures around the room. Gorgeous table linens from La Tavola added texture and helped to accentuate the overall design ascetic. To top it off, lighting in a warm, golden tone was utilized to bring it all together.

I collaborated with our amazing wedding planner, Kristin Love of Details With Love, to add elements throughout the wedding that our guests may not have seen before. We opted to have an ornate gold-framed mirror made in lieu of escort cards, on which table seating was written with hand calligraphy. A flowing garland of greenery and flowers was draped around the mirror as an accent. Our welcome boxes contained a note and customized watercolor map highlighting all of the places in Newport that we love to visit as a couple. We also arranged to have a gourmet taco food truck (one of Joe’s favorites) arrive towards the end of the evening to send our guests away with a little post bubbly snack!

Our wedding day couldn’t have been more perfect from start to finish. The day began with breakfast and mimosas while the team at Jennie Kay Beauty made us all feel and look so beautiful. By the time I was finished getting ready, I put on my custom Prada shoes (complete with my new initials on the bottom!) and with help from my mother and sister, slipped into my dress.

Our traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony was held in a tiny Greek Orthodox Church in downtown Newport. Following the ceremony, old-fashioned trolleys transported guests to Rosecliff, where they were met by waiters holding coupes full of champagne. Guests were then welcomed to the back lawn where amazing views, delicious appetizers, and a champagne bar awaited them.

We spent the rest of the evening making memories with our loved ones, snapping hilarious pictures in the photo booth, and dancing the night away to the unforgettable sounds of Vali Entertainment. (I’m pretty sure a rap battle broke out at one point!)

None of this would have been possible without our amazing parents, vendors, and of course our fantastic wedding planner. We couldn’t have asked for a more spectacular wedding, and it was the perfect way to kick off our life together as husband and wife.
