A Pink + Purple Wedding Set in Napa Valley

When these two fellow med students turned loves planned their dream day, there were a few “musts” on the list. A beautiful outdoor setting, personal details to reflect their heritage, and (of course) just the right vendors to capture the memories. Enter KT Merry who captured it all in one perfect gallery. Along with Jonathan Clark who crafted the film below, she photographed a celebration that’s certain to put shades pink and purple on the wedding palette map.

From The Bride… Chris and I always tell people that we met in the dark. We both were doing our training at the same hospital in Chicago- me in plastic surgery and he in radiology. I walked into the dark room where radiologists do all their work, looking for help, and Chris was the first person to look up from the computer. Months later I was at a medical school reunion and mentioned to a former classmate who worked with Chris that I thought he was cute, and one of my friends who was with me at the reunion launched a major effort to find out who this guy was and cajoled me into going out on a near blind date with him several weeks later.

What an adventure it has been – after meeting in Chicago, one year later we moved to New York City for my fellowship training, and one year after that, we moved to San Francisco where I took my first job (finally after 11 years of post-college training!). In our final month in New York, Chris surprised me by proposing in our tiny studio. The proposal was a combination of both of our styles – I love grand romantic gestures and Chris prefers unique, intimate moments. He wrote me a long poem in a scrapbook I keep filled with momentos from our time together – Broadway ticket stubs, subway tokens from cities we have visited, restaurant menus. He secretly videotaped the entire proposal from a camera in our apartment capturing a private moment between the two of us, followed by a previously planned black-tie celebration at Cipriani’s for my fellowship graduation.

We never expected to end up in California, but as we started planning our wedding, we quickly decided on Napa as our destination. Chris is Canadian, and we have friends and family all over the country and world, and we were sure Napa would be the perfect place to celebrate with everyone. While it would be a destination wedding for most of our guests, it was only 90 minutes from us, allowing me to be involved in all aspects of the wedding planning. We spent months visiting or researching every venue in Napa Valley without finding anything that fit our vision for the wedding celebration. Then we visited Black Swan Lake Estate, and I remember we looked at each other during the visit, and we both knew that we had found the perfect place. It was January, and despite the lack of leaves on the trees or flowers in the garden, we could already imagine how beautiful it would look in September which is harvest season in Napa and when we wanted to have our wedding.

The venue was magical. Throughout the nine months we planned this wedding, every time we were on site for a visit, it became more and more beautiful. I have always wanted to have an outdoor wedding with the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception held completely outdoors under the stars. And the estate was large enough to give each part of the wedding a new and unique feel. The estate was so beautiful on its own, we didn’t feel like we needed that much to embellish it besides our wonderful friends and family.

Knowing we were getting married in the middle of harvest season, when there would be lots of natural greenery, I wanted to incorporate bright pops of color. I chose purple and fuchsia flowers and bridesmaid dresses because I have always loved these colors and knew they would look amazing amongst all the ripe leaves and vines. We were married down by the lake, under these beautiful weeping willows. For the bridal entrance, an antique Rolls Royce drove my father and me through the vineyard road down to the lake where Chris was waiting for me at the foot of the trees.

My younger brother was our officiant, and we wanted our ceremony to be interactive, so during the ceremony, our wedding rings which were tied to a small wreath, were passed among our guests so that everyone could touch our rings and bless the symbol of our marriage prior to Chris and I exchanging them. All of our guests then walked through the vineyards up to lawn for cocktail hours, and then moved on to the terrace where everyone sat at two long king’s table under an arbor of trees with glimmering crystal chandeliers suspended from the roof formed by the tree branches.

It was really important to us that the wedding reflect our different backgrounds – Chris’ Canadian roots and my Vietnamese heritage. We found an amazing stationery company in Baltimore that designed our wedding invitations and printed material. Our wedding invitation included a custom portrait of the two of us under the willow trees, with an early reveal of my wedding dress (for anyone who was paying attention), and the invitation also had a timeline of all of the cities we have lived in across the world, both before and after we met.

We also incorporated other Canadian and Vietnamese elements into the wedding- we had his and hers cocktails using Canadian whiskey and maple syrup and a Vietnamese lemonade with passionfruit. Our passed hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour included mini Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches and fresh spring rolls. I also changed into a traditional Vietnamese dress (ao dai) and hat for the cake cutting, though instead of wearing the traditional red ao dai, I had a purple ao dai made to match our wedding colors. Our guests liked my Vietnamese dress (and especially the gold hat) the most since most had never seen the traditional wedding outfit. Though I loved my white wedding dress, which my mother had picked out for me. It had a detachable tulle overskirt which I wore during the ceremony and most of the reception. But to surprise our wedding guests, we had our wedding instructor choreograph into our first dance an opening sequence in which Chris twirls me out of the overskirt to reveal the rest of my dress underneath.

We had such an amazing time and the despite small hiccups (right before the wedding, about 20 of our guests got on the wrong shuttle and ended up at the wrong wedding), the day was exactly how we imagined. Many of our guests commented on how special it was to meet all of our other guests – friends and family who represent all the different periods of our life from childhood to adulthood. With our wedding it was finally possible to gather all the people who have been such an important part of our past and present together in one place to celebrate the start of our new future together. We got to spend an entire weekend with friends and family who had come from both near and far- as far away as Singapore and Kenya to be with us. We are so glad to have the memories captured so beautifully by both our wedding photographer and videographer. Everyone would tell me before the wedding, “Enjoy every moment, because your wedding day is going to go by in the blink of an eye.” And it sometimes seems like life since the wedding has gone by in the blink of an eye, but it is truly wonderful to know that we get to spend the rest of our lives together making even better memories.

How to Live Large in a Small Office Space

Living Large in the tiniest of spots should be my mantra because every apartment, office and home I’ve ever saddled up to has been size challenged. Making it work is as easy as these genius tips from event planner and fellow small office curator, Carly Witzburg of Milk Glass Productions. This Boss Lady is spilling the beans on a chic office space no matter the square footage. See even more in the VAULT.

Genius Tricks for Small Space Decorating

[dotted]

first and foremost, make a list of the necessities

What is most important to you? For example, I knew we needed lots of storage for our crafts, binders, ribbon/string, table numbers, linen swatch books, office supplies – the list goes on. I believe it’s important to have the storage presentable and organized when we have clients into the office (and for ourselves as well!). So in our small space, it was easiest to store vertically – we did this with tall shelves and bins on the wall across from our work space. It’s easily accessed, and keeps all of our items neatly tucked away.

With small spaces, you want to make use of everything you can — for example, the front table is multipurpose and functions as a mock-up table for clients, entry table (perfect for fresh flowers from Fiori Flowers), as well as a table for lunch or coffee for us and our clients.

Measure your space before buying anything!

Guessing will get you into trouble. This is so simple, and yet it’s a mistake that we see all the time, especially with small spaces. In a large, open warehouse, a couch might look like the perfect size; however, in reality, it’s likely too big for your space. We measured the entire area, and we opted for a love seat with sleek lines paired with cowhide pillows. Nothing over sized, no huge sofa arms or legs. Also, instead of chairs to complete our living room space, (and make it too crowded), we chose beautiful Mongolian fur ottomans. These are a great alternative to bulky arm chairs, and are easily moved if need be.

The easiest way to open up a room is to paint with a neutral palette

As such, we painted the walls a nice light gray with a clean white trim. One of our favorite trends right now is black trim around the inside frame of the window – this really makes the window pop and draws attention to the view outside, which opens up the room.

We kept the color palette the same throughout the space, even though the space is divided into three areas. This makes the entire space look like one big room, instead of three tiny spaces. To the left are our desks and storage, in the center is our beautiful table and entrance space, and to the right is our sitting area. We chose two different rugs on both sides of the room, but in the same neutral color palette of the room. We did, however, put a large colorful piece of artwork on the wall in the sitting area for a pop of color. It is a beautiful focal point.

Mirrors also make small spaces feel bigger

We placed a tall frame-less mirror in the corner for a more ‘glamorous’ look. Floor-length mirrors also make the walls feel taller. We often have hair and make up trials in my office, so it’s important for my beautiful brides to be able to look at themselves. This and the floor-length curtains really draw your eyes up and again, make the room lighter and brighter. We also added a mirrored coffee table, which reflects the flowers and light. A solid wood table would have made the space appear smaller. Drum shade chandeliers complete the space, not only for practical purposes, but for the design as well.

Don’t be afraid to go vertical

There is nothing worse than clutter! We have plants hanging from the ceiling so they don’t take up valuable desk space. Plants can be a great alternative to big art pieces and fill in empty corners. It’s always nice to see live plants. They purify the air and really complete a space.

From The Bride…Josh and I met when we were 13 at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis when our lockers were placed next to each other and were in the same homeroom class. Dating on and off through high school, we began dating again before our senior year of high school and continued to date as we both attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and moved back to Minneapolis after college to start working. Many years in the making, we were engaged in Nantucket on July 1st, 2013 on Miacomet Beach at sunset. We spent the next 22 months planning our big day with the help of our family and many wonderful vendor partners. We officially tied the knot at May 23rd, 2015 at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With many family and friends traveling from all over, we wanted to make it easy and hold all held all of our wedding events in one place. So, we held our wedding ceremony in the ballroom, a cocktail reception on the outdoor deck overlooking Lake Calhoun, and a tented wedding reception on the croquet lawn.

Ever since I was little and my family had become members, I had dreamed of having my wedding at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis with its sweeping views over Lake Calhoun and downtown Minneapolis in the distance. However, I also dreamed of having tall ceilings on my wedding day, and since the clubhouse was originally built in 1920, the ballroom ceilings are “taller”, but weren’t quite what I had in mind. So, I knew I couldn’t do it alone and worked with Nicolle Sellers from Mother of the Bride Wedding Planning and Design to figure out a solution. To get the best of both worlds, we decided to hold the ceremony in the traditional, classic Minikahda ballroom, a cocktail reception on the outdoor deck, and a clear top tented reception on the croquet lawn. With a clear top tent, we were able to protect our guests if needed from the unpredictable Minnesota May weather and also bring in the classic, elegant aspects with the clubhouse in the background, but have our guests dine and dance over looking the beautiful lake and under the stars. The club loved our tent so much, they kept it up for an additional week to hold the annual Minikahda Open after-party there!

My gown we found in Dallas, Texas at the Neiman Marcus bridal salon. It was the Waltz dress from Monique Lhuillier’s Platinum collection and I think its name perfectly describes it. It was romantic, elegant, traditional with a touch of modern, and with its dusty rose color it was different than anything else I had seen when shopping and so I knew it had to be the one. The dress was a strapless ballgown made out of pale pink silk tulle that in some lights looked almost white, but others more pink. The entire skirt was made out of hundreds of small handkerchief sized pieces of fabric that all had raw edges giving the effect that I had run through a field and frayed the edges slightly. The broach on the hip of my dress had two butterflies made out of small rhinestones. Every detail made it special. So, this was my inspiration for our colors which became a dusty rose pale pink, white, and silver accents. Also, the style mixture of traditional with a small touch of modern was what we wanted to have our wedding day exude. We brought this through from our save the dates to the linens to our floral arrangements.

Looking back, our favorite moment of the wedding was walking down from the clubhouse into the tent for our reception as we were introduced for the first time. Seeing my vision come to life with the tent all lit up and filled with our closest friends and family clapping for us was a moment I know neither of us will ever forget.

My favorite detail of the wedding day was all of our calligraphy. We had a local calligrapher, Rosann Konieczny who did the calligraphy for our save the dates and invitations, hand write all of the name cards, the table numbers, and dinner menus. Her gorgeous work was also our inspiration for the bar menus, ceremony programs, dessert table descriptions, and calligraphy we used on our hotel gift boxes. It really pulled every aspect of the day together and made it feel special.

Working on our flowers with Martha from Martha’s Gardens in St. Paul, Minnesota is nothing short of a dream. From our first meeting, I knew she understood what we wanted our flowers to look like on our wedding day and every detail would be perfect. I have always been drawn to large blooms, and so my inspiration for our flowers was drawn from my dream bouquet of just fluffy, white peonies. Having a wedding at the end of May is also when they happen to be in bloom, so Martha did a European design with the white peonies and wrapped the stems in a white ribbon and had vintage pearl accents. Since I had peonies, Josh and his groomsmen had boutonnieres made of white ranunculus to emulate the shape of the peonies on a smaller scale. The bridesmaids had bouquets made of peonies, hydrangeas, and pale pink English garden roses. For our ceremony in the ballroom, we wanted some whimsy and to play off of the beautiful greenery you would be able to see right behind where we would be standing overlooking the lake. Martha constructed two large arrangements in silver urns using hydrangeas, small blossoms, and branches with greenery to create a focal point in the ballroom. For our reception, we continued with peonies, garden roses, and small blossoms, but wanted different arrangement heights to add some drama and interest. So, we did a mixture of tall arrangements on top of silver candelabras and low, full bowl arrangements in mercury glass. Our head table had a beautiful 16′ garland draped over the length of the table with lots of candlelight. We also picked linens for half of the tables that were a champagne color and for the other half linens that had some sequins in them that would reflect the candlelight on the tables. The effect of the combination of flowers, candles, and chandeliers we hung from the ceiling of the tent created an atmosphere that was nothing short of magical as guests danced the night away.

Josh’s family opened a brewery in Decorah, Iowa right before our wedding. So, for our specialty drinks, we of course wanted to serve his family’s brews! Our bridal party, family, and friends loved it and it was a cool way for us to have something no one else had tried before!

Josh and I are both really into desserts and consider both of ourselves to have a large sweet tooth, so when we thought about what we wanted for our wedding, we wanted to go all out on dessert. First, each guest was served a pink champagne cake lollipop with a little sign on the handle inviting them to join us for more dessert, drinks, and dancing. Once out of their chairs, they could head to our dessert “bar” where we had sweets including salted caramel or edible silver paint splattered vanilla macaroons, mini chocolate or butterscotch trifles, or bite-size fruit tarts. We also had a build-your-own sundae bar next to these desserts where our guests could add whatever toppings they wanted to the gelato that is made in-house at Minikahda. We lastly had cake that is a signature dessert at our favorite bakery. Yum! made a two-tiered version of their Patticake for our day, which is a chocolate cake with white buttercream frosting. We then had our florist add some fresh blooms to make tie it into the other arrangements. Our guests loved the choices and couldn’t stop talking about all the different things they loved! It was great to have something for everyone.

If you can fit it in your budget, I would recommend hiring a wedding planner to help at least on the day of. Nicolle was my saving grace and allowed me, my family, and our bridal party to stay calm and truly enjoy every minute because she and her team had it all under control. We even had a nearby neighbor call the police on noise from the band, and she dealt with it all so that my family and I didn’t even know it happened until after the wedding was over! She truly made the day seamless and also kept us on schedule to ensure we didn’t miss out on anything. Her expertise and support was the best money we spent!

A second piece of advice is to hire a videographer. Going through the wedding planning process, I had asked many friends who had gotten married whether or not to get one. The ones who had one ranged from decently glad they had it to it was something they continued to watch every week, but the ones who hadn’t gotten one all said it was something they regretted not making room for in their budgets. We ended up hiring one and we are extremely glad we did. Looking back, it makes the day come back alive. It allows us to hear our friends and family’s laughter, my dad’s speech, small details we maybe missed seeing in person, and it’s something we can watch as many times as we want. It’s definitely worth it and you don’t have to break the bank to do so.

Ethereal + Elegant Coastal Bridal Session

If there’s one thing we’re absolutely certain about, it’s that Hawaii is straight up magic. For it’s this illusive island state that beckons romance as often as waves crash on the sandy shores and this lovely from the lens of Christine Clark is no exception to our above statement. An inspiration blooming with Passion Roots florals and fab design details, we’ve got it all waiting for you in The Vault!

From Christine Clark… The inspiration for this styled shoot was the Hawaiian ocean along which we shot. Delicate calligraphy, stunning lace gowns, and romantic sea glass rings combined to create an ethereal, coastal elegance for this inspiration shoot. Softly highlighted by golden hour along the rocky and sandy shore, our bride wore crowns of sea fans and star fish as an ode to the ocean beside her. Pops of romantic color bloomed in her bouquet as an accent to the coastal colors. Delicate imagination and whimsy shone through all the details to form a dreamy bridal session along the shore.

Romantic Garden-Inspired Castle Wedding Editorial Session

I think this wedding inspiration photo shoot from Holeigh V Photography must have escaped from a children’s storybook because it’s an absolute fairytale. From the frame-worthy stationery by Plume Calligraphy to the gorgeous overflowing blossoms, every inch of this editorial is fit for the 21st Century Princess. Soak up all the pretty in The Vault!

From Holeigh V PhotographyThis intimate wedding inspiration shoot took place in the heart of the North Carolina mountains at Castle Ladyhawke. Using the surroundings of the castle as inspiration, our bride wandered the grounds and foraged ivy, ferns and creeping vine to incorporate into her design by Springvine Design. It covered their table, the cake and everything in between so that nature was at the forefront rather than decor. A color palette of Ivory, Gold, Peach and Grey tones balanced the warmth of their summer day with the castle’s cool stone. To her surprise, she found sweet little pears with speckled blush waiting to be picked on a nearby tree. She picked them and placed them upon each plate, knowing they were the perfect addition that would greet their parents happily at their table. They read their vows and married under an arch of florals and greenery, with the view of the Appalachian mountains in the background.

Chic, Vintage Massachusetts Wedding

Beautiful to the very core, this chic wedding at the Willowdale Estate has just the perfect amount of vintage flair to make it not only lovely but interesting. With florals that will make you melt from Les Fleurs and images so pretty you can’t believe your eyes from Ramblefree Photo Co., this wedding defines stunning. See even more in the VAULT.

From Ramblefree Photo CoBrian and Christie’s sophisticated New England wedding took place on a balmy, stormy day in late August, but the couple and their guests didn’t let the rain spoil anything for them! Both the ceremony and reception took place at the beautiful Willowdale Estate in Topsfield, MA – a stately stone mansion tucked away in a forest. Christie looked stunning in bridal separates from Watters and WToo topped with a glamorous beaded capelet from BHLDN. The bridesmaids complemented the simple and chic color palette with mismatched but coordinating nude gowns. Brian and his groomsmen were handsome in classic Vera Wang tuxes.

Because of the impending rain, the couple was wed in a traditional ceremony under Willowdale’s gracious tent with a view of the stone courtyard. While guests enjoyed cocktail hour, Brian and Christie, undeterred by the approaching storms, braved the outdoors and wandered Willowdale’s grounds and forests to get some natural couples portraits. Luckily, the rain held off until almost the exact moment when they went back inside for the start of the reception!

The talented Les Fleurs created the lush bouquets and ceremony and reception decor. The floral design incorporated abundant soft pastels, corals, and textural greenery such as ivy. Christie and Les Fleurs decided to take advantage of the summer harvest and incorporate summer fruits like peaches and pears into the centerpieces. They were a wonderfully unexpected and beautiful touch. Each guest also received a peach at their place setting.

Guests dined on delicious food from Willowdale and danced into the night with the bride and groom while rain pounded on the tent roof above.

Intimate Nashville Wedding with Every Guest in the Wedding Party

It’s official, this is one of the most adorable couples and sweetest weddings ever. Though Sammi and Branden originally had two very different visions of their wedding (an elopement for her, a big wedding for him), the duo ultimately decided to exchange vows surrounded by 30 of their closest friends and family, all of whom “got a bouquet or corsage because each of our guests was in our wedding party.” See every moment of this special day, captured by Maria Lamb, in The Vault!

From The Bride & Groom…On November 15th, 2015, we gathered with 30 of our closest friends and family to make vows to be forever committed to each other, to God, and to our relationship.

When we first got engaged and began to talk about our wedding, we both came from different perspectives. Originally, Branden wanted a large wedding and I (Sammi) wanted to elope.

Now, I’m glad we did neither of those.

Having a small, intimate wedding was so incredibly perfect for us. With both of our lives so public online, it was a relief to let things go and not have to make a big production out of the day.

We’re both so glad we took advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have everyone we loved most, from all over the country, in the same room. And not just for a day, but to hang out all weekend in Nashville before our Sunday afternoon wedding.

One of the things that was most important to us while we were planning was that everyone had a role within the wedding. My sister did my make-up, our friend Judson made our vow books, our friends the Lambs took photos, our mentors read passages during the ceremony, my mom gave me my great-grandmother’s china to use for our doughnuts….

Everyone got a bouquet or corsage because each of our guests was in our wedding party; everyone from Branden’s grandma to my best friend.

Because of the small size, we had everyone join us in a circle during the ceremony. A decision that we originally made from a practical standpoint turned out to be a beautiful physical reminder of the amazing support we have received through the years of our relationship.

We are so grateful for all the love we have received as we have stepped into this new chapter together. Thank you to all of our friends and family who have chosen to be a part of our story.

From The Bride…Our marriage is a dream come true in every way, starting with the big day that was more than we could have ever imagined. Friends, family, Anna, Meghan, Noor (of Anna Lucia Events), Tiffany & Cody (of Hunter Ryan Photo) and David & Danny (of Salon Tease) helped make our dream into a reality.

We exchanged our wedding vows at Trinity By The Cove Episcopal Church in Naples, Fl. on Sept. 12, 2015. A black-tie reception of dining and dancing followed a Private Club in Naples. I selected an Oscar de la Renta silk mikado gown and an Homa silk organza veil, and wore my grandmother Shirley’s sapphire bangle.

We met in the fall of 2005 at Vanderbilt University. We remained friends for seven years, even though we always knew we’d found “the one”.  We began dating in 2012, when I soon moved from New York City to Dallas, and became engaged in October of 2014. We were married in September of the following year, and are so thrilled for life together forever.

6 Steps to a Flawless Red Lip

Any time I spot a someone with a really great shade of lipstick on, I’m bound and determined to give it a go. It’s so chic and can take jeans and a white shirt to a whole new level. But then when it comes time to applying said lipstick, I chicken out. Brittany Messner of Life, Set Sail is coming to the rescue. Follow her six easy steps to a flawless red lip and never be afraid to walk on the bold lippie side again.

Even though I love the appearance of a classic red lip, one thing has always bothered me, and that is the maintenance required to pull off said look. After all, there’s is little less appealing than worn down red lipstick. Follow my tips on how you can get a flawless (and lasting) red lip in just a few simple steps!

PRIME: This one little step will work wonders for applying not just a red lip, but any lipstick you want to last throughout the day!

MAP IT OUT: Using your lip liner, map out the shape of your lips before completely filling them in. Making an “x” shape at the peak of your lips will result in a much more even look rather than free-handing application.

FILL IT IN: Continue to use your lip liner to fill in your lips. Using liner all over will help your finished look stay much longer than by only using liner on the edges of your lips.

APPLY COLOR: Now that you’re prepped and primed, you can use your favorite shade to finish your look!

BLOT: Using a tissue, blot your lip color.

REAPPLY: As your last step, reapply your lip color. The blot and reapply technique is one I use often when wanting my lipstick to go the distance, but you can also lightly dust translucent powder on your lips for a similar effect.

……

I love how a simple red lip can completely transform your look. My favorite way to wear it is with a pair of skinny jeans and a chunky knit or a little black dress.

Outdoor Fall Engagement Shoot

New England in the fall is pure magic, so scheduling your engagement photos while everything is golden is just a no brainer. Need proof? Take a look at these picture perfect images from Jack Jeffries of Christian Oth Studio. It’s engagement session perfection, and you can see even more in the VAULT.

From The Bride…Tim proposed to me after at Sasco Hill beach, down the street from our home on the Monday after Easter. Our parents were at our home for the holiday and all had met for the first time. After his parents had left our house it was just my parents Tim and I – he thought that would be an opportune time to ask my parents for my hand in marriage. Tim suggested that I run out to go get a manicure (since I worked so hard cooking and cleaning for our parents to come for the holiday) and that is when he asked my dad. Of course my parents were ecstatic and did not think twice about saying yes to his request. My family left and headed back to Chicago and the very next day Tim asked me to come home from work early because he wanted to take me on a special date to thank me again for the hard work over the holiday. So I get home at 5 on the dot, and he was sitting in our family room and just said okay get dressed we have to go. Typically we don’t eat at 5, so I really did not know what was going on. We live .25 of a mile from the beach and he started to head in that direction – so I thought oh how nice he made us a picnic. We get there, he said get out and close your eyes – and at this time I heard a small faint bark of a dog in the distance so I thought he got us a puppy!! I was wrong, I opened my eyes and saw someone else’s puppy running in the distance, and Tim down on one knee! I was absolutely stunned, STUNNED. Of course we had talked about it, but I thought he was going to wait to do it until after he had graduate business school in June. After it all sank in, we went back to the car where he had a bottle of Cristal and blankets and flowers. We just sat there, all alone at our beach – no one around us except seagulls and strangers taking it all in wrapped up in the blankets from our family room. The feeling I had that night, was one I had never felt in my life before. I had never felt so secure, loved and excited. Our engagement photos were taken by Jack Jeffries of Christian Oth Studio on the most perfect late October day. The foliage was at its peak in our small town of Southport CT and the sun was shining. We began the photo session at our home and then proceeded to walk around the town and found the best trees and just started snapping away. I did a quick outfit change, and we headed down to the same beach we were engaged at and had some great pictures taken down on the rocks and in the brush.

From Cly By MatthewWe want to share this wedding at the gorgeous Metropolitan Building. It’s always different and fun to shoot at this venue because it’s so magical with so many vintage and rustic details. The bride, Katrina’s getting ready portraits are some of our favorite shots. It’s mysterious and beautiful at the same time. The deep colors of the bouquet and different color bridesmaid dresses really went well together as well. Katrina and Joe were so sweet and so in love! They couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other and their first dance was so romantic and memorable!

You’ll Never Guess Where This Reception Took Place

I’ve always known the designers behind Easton Events are amazing, but when they transformed a downtown Raleigh parking garage into a reception venue that stopped me dead in my tracks? Well, I think they officially earned a standing ovation. They designed a space to accommodate the couple’s 450 guests, that still managed to feel every bit as inviting and special as the most intimate of celebrations. Do yourself a favor and head to the gallery captured by Corbin Gurkin, and don’t miss the film by Blueberry Creative below!

From Easton EventsWhere to begin with this wonderful Raleigh, NC wedding? First, we should note that the tented reception took place on a parking deck. A privately owned portion of the parking garage in downtown Raleigh opened up to the outside and ended up being the perfect size to accommodate a frame tent that was large enough to accommodate 450 guests. The tent nestled in perfectly within the deck that was one story above ground; therefore, when the infrastructure began, the tent materials and restroom trailers had to be crane-lifted onto the deck.

The Sky Line team had a full week to install the structure with weather unfortunately not on their side, before Blossoms Events came in to start in on the draping and laydown the custom laminate gold and ivory marbled dancefloor. The tent was draped in beautiful shades of neutral silk dupioni with two ceiling medallions that added depth and texture as well as helped break up the tent into two areas: one for dancing and the other to showcase the bar.

Our custom made 20’ oval shaped bar was one of the central focal points of the space. For a guest count of 450 guests, we knew a large, prominent bar with access points on all sides was going to be the key for a successful event. Touches of lush garland and washed out mirrors were incorporated as a design element and barstools were added which made it even more inviting.

Custom tablecloths adorned the bar height tables with the addition of La Tavola linens for the high/low cocktail tables. A side lounge tent provided an area for guests to kick back their heals and enjoy their surroundings with lounge vignettes from Snyder Events. The florals selected had an English garden feel with bright greenery, touches of blush pinks, and magnolia leaves.

One of the biggest hurdles, in addition to the fact we were one story above ground, was what to do with the 3 cement bases that were left from dismantling the parking lot light fixtures – one of which was directly in the middle of the tent. Our solution was naturally, to cover them! Two were utilized as bar height food stations and the one in the middle of the room was covered with a tufted, round banquette. We placed another on the other side to create symmetry, and then mirrored this look in the side lounge tent. This then led to providing an amazing base for very large, prominent floral arrangements in custom painted urns, which created both height and depth within the space.

A draped and chandelier lined marquee acted as the main entrance and exit for the event and was utilized for the special confetti getaway. The bride, in her Monique Lhuillier gown and the groom, in his custom tux departed at the end of the evening and spent their night together in a suite at the Renaissance Hotel and as guests departed, they were handed leftover slices of wedding cake as an end of the night treat.

Love a parking garage reception? Check out this gorgeous day!

DIY Hand-Tied Garden-Style Bridal Bouquet

Y’all, how pretty is this posy?! A handful of pastel blooms paired with lush roses, we’re beyond obsessed and thankful that Floret Flowers give us the rundown on what makes up this handful of petals. Captured by Heather Payne Photography, we’ve got all the details on the gorgeous garden-inspired bouquet below!

Materials

  • Garden roses
  • Dahlias
  • Lisianthus
  • Zinnia
  • Foxglove
  • Stock
  • Rose foliage
  • Chocolate cosmos
  • Heuchera

Establish shape | To start, choose foliage with sturdy, arching stems in order to create the overall bouquet shape. Take two stems and make an X, and then add in a third stem to create a splayed-out triangle. When holding your bouquet, avoid using a tight grip with your entire fist. Instead, use the tips of your fingers to hold the stems loosely.

Build your foundation | Begin layering in supporting greens, echoing the original triangle shape you established at the start. I generally work with one ingredient at a time, evenly spacing each stem around in a circle, working clockwise.

Thread in color | Now it’s time to start adding in the flowers. Begin by adding in smaller flowers and work up to the bigger blooms. Be sure to give the flowers “room to breathe.” In other words, don’t try cramming a bunch of flowers into a tight, dense cluster; you want your bouquet to have a light, airy feel to it.

Finish with airy accents | After placing all of the primary flowers, weave in any delicate accents, such as grasses, or any frilly or umbel-shaped flowers. These elements should occupy a separate “plane” of the bouquet, which may be slightly higher or extended outward just beyond the larger flowers that form the shape of the bouquet.

Fluff and finish | You may find that you need to raise or lower the flowers in your bouquet in order for it to form the shape you prefer. With a loose grip, gently pull the stems up or down in order to ensure each flower is placed correctly. When finished, use waterproof tape to wrap the bouquet stems followed by a ribbon wrap in a color that complements the flowers. Enjoy your creation!

From Floret Flowers… Lush, asymmetrical, garden-style bouquets are coveted by today’s brides. Thanks in part to the renaissance of small flower farms and the popularity of the seasonal flower movement, the availability of locally-grown blooms continues to expand. Here, Erin Benzakein of Floret, demonstrates how to make a hand-tied bridal bouquet with seasonal flowers. As both a flower farmer and floral designer, Erin specializes in crafting fresh-from-the-garden designs that make brides swoon.

It’s Official: This Bridesmaid Crew is What #SquadGoals Are All About

First off, this bridesmaid crew has taken #SquadGoals to the next level. Because the only thing better than their getting ready t-shirts (yes, please!) is the white-on-white gowns they rocked for the Big Day. They set the scene for the ultra modern, impossibly chic celebration of Michael & Sabrina’s love, and we’re forever grateful Allison Kuhn Photography was on hand to capture. Head to The Vault for more inspo and forward this one to your girls, stat!

From The Bride…My vision was tropical, modern, and Miami! The color palette was all white everything. However, I did have to modify because of the reception space. The ballroom was very dark moody, with grays, black, golds and white so we incorporated those tones a little, just for the reception.

I knew from the beginning I wanted my bridesmaids to have their own take on a bridesmaid dress so the only requirement was white and short, they all have amazing style so I know the combo would look amaze balls together, I mean they are all gorgeous!

I was most excited about the venue location! I wanted something easy that did not require a lot of extra decor. The W South Beach is absolutely fantastic and needed minimal wedding extras. I always think the people that fill the space make it beautiful!

My gown was custom made by Erin Grey Couture in Charlotte! I wanted something super sexy, but not too sexy. CJ the owner of Erin Grey helped bring my vision to life!

My shoes were probably one of my favorite memories of the wedding. My husband surprised me a few months before the wedding and flew my best friend and I to New York so I could get my Sophia Websters at Saks on Fifth! It was so special – that was a beautiful wedding gift from Michael! One of the many reasons I love him.

Another favorite moment was walking down the aisle! Wow, it still brings tears to my eyes. Cherish that moment girls! It is breath taking.

I had the dream team working magic on me and my girls! My fab boss, Lindsey Thorne (owner of Be Pretty) did absolutely perfect hair and makeup and my photographer Allison Kuhn is just a phenomenal photographer! They did more than I could have imagined in my most perfect dream.

I wanted a gorgeous wedding of course, but what was most important to me was that our closest friends and family had a magical time! They mean so much to Michael and I and we knew we had to make it a fun party for everyone!

My cake was fabulous! I found two designs and combined them. I love marble, so the entire cake was a gray marble with gold flakes on it! It came out perfect, and even though I didn’t try an actual piece everyone said the fresh strawberry was a great choice!

My best advice for brides is hire the best vendors, it makes life so much easier! They are great at their job and it allows you to relax and enjoy time with the people you love on your big day! Also, pay for GOOD food and booze! Your guests will thank you over and over! Sabrina and Michael decided to get married this past February. The couple lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, but wanted to warm things up a bit and take their wedding to South Beach Miami, FL. Family and friends flew from all over to soak in some sun, warmth and fun for this laid back, modern wedding. The couple wanted to incorporate the artwork and modern vibes of the W South Beach Hotel. Sabrina is a wedding hair & makeup associate artist with Be Pretty Lindsey Regan Thorne, so now it was her chance to switch roles and sit in the chair to be beautified for her big day. Her dress was custom designed by Erin Grey Couture and had was a modern, glamours design that was perfect for Sabrina!

From Allison Kuhn Photography…Sabrina’s shoes were a gift from Michael from when Sabrina and her best friend, Olivia visited New York last year.

Sabrina broke the trend of the bridesmaids robes and went for something more edgy with their black and white t-shirts.

They also chose to hold their ceremony in the garden area underneath palm trees and really pull in the Miami vibe. The cake was decorated just perfectly and included the marbling seen around the hotel.

This couple was engaged in Las Vegas where a helicopter took them through the Grand Canyon! They enjoy traveling and learning about new cultures and always something new. They are an incredibly sweet and fun couple who are laid back and enjoy everything life throws their way!
