Elegant + Colorful Tropical Beachside Wedding

It’s no secret that we love a Wendy Laurel wedding. For her lens always captures the couples who’ve also managed to plan the ultimate tropical celebration. Take these middle school sweethearts who wed on the beautiful beaches of Wailea. It’s the ultimate love story capped off by one gorgeous Katie May gown making this the ultimate gallery, and we’ve got it all waiting for you in THE VAULT!

From Wendy LaurelMaybe its a trend but many of my wedding couples this year have been together for a long time before marrying. But this couple has the best and longest love story. They met in middle school and have been together since then (through high school, through college). Something about that just makes me melt. And they were surrounded by their best friends and family all of whom have known them forever. It doesn’t get much better than that.

And then they planned a stunner of a destination wedding all by themselves. They included fun tropical touches such as the banana leaves and the handmade surfboard shaped table numbers made by the groom. Kelsey looked amazing in her backless Katie May wedding gown with her brightly colored tropical bouquet. They choose a ceremony and reception spot right on the beach in beautiful Wailea to make full use of the sky, sand, and ocean in their images.

Intimate Maui Wedding

Maui is made for marrying, that goes without saying.  But take a sweet, laid-back duo like these two cuties and pair them up with a dream team of vendors (think Christie Graham and Sugar Beach Events) and it’s a day made for the pages of SMP.  From the beautiful blooms from Dellables to the stunning Grace Loves Lace gown to the breathtaking scenery.  See it all in THE VAULT right this way.

From Christie Graham Photography… Having spent plenty of time together on Maui, a destination wedding was an easy decision for Lauren and Stu. The couple decided bringing a photographer from Vancouver who they trusted to capture the joy and excitement of their day was the right choice.

Lauren and Stu were the most relaxed couple I have ever worked with. They always seemed at ease, not only on the wedding day, but on the days leading up to it as well. Always smiling. Always socializing. It’s clear they were in their element on Maui.

The ceremony and reception took place steps from the ocean, guests enjoyed amazing views throughout the day. A local musician played beautiful music as the bride walked down the aisle. Everyone ate, drank, laughed and danced under the sun, and then the stars. It truly was magical!

Modern Maui Wedding in Pretty Pastel Hues

The best weddings are all about the moments, and this Maui fête is full of pretty ones. From the Bride’s custom lace wedding dress and the video of well wishes from family unable to travel from Korea to the playful Instagram guest book, this couple couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, especially with Anna Kim Photography to capture all the magic at Sugar Beach Events. See it all in THE VAULT!

From The Bride… Alex and I decided that instead of having two weddings in both VA and South Korea to accommodate both sides of the family, we would just have everyone meet in the middle in Hawaii! It was the best decision we could have made.

My main recommendation for couples who are planning their weddings, other than picking an amazing location, would be to research… a lot!  Photography & Videography are the most important things! If you find someone you really like, make sure to book in advance.. at least 6 month before! I had to change my wedding date because I love Anna Kim’s style so much and it was totally worth it!

I’m a graphic/web designer and I love simple, clean, modern design, so that became my wedding theme. We chose pastel colors (mainly peach, pink, and baby blue) and added a little bit of gold to give it a modern and classic look.

It was impossible to find my wedding dress, so I decided to just design my own dress. I bought the simple lacy wedding dress and worked with a local dress maker who did an incredible job. My maid of honor added the final touch, a beautiful jeweled belt sewn on to the front–it completed the dress so perfectly and meant so much to have my maid of honor be a part of the wedding dress creation. I accented the wedding dress with gold shoes by Jimmy Choo to match the wedding theme. My bridesmaids wore pastel dresses of peach and baby blue while Alex’s groomsmen wore gray and baby blue.

Our main goal was for our guests to have fun at the wedding. Since we wanted to have an outdoor wedding as well as a modern and classic indoor reception, Sugar Beach Events was the perfect location! Our guests did not have to travel to different locations from t he ceremony to the reception, plus it offered us an amazing ocean-view as well as Chef Lee’s insanely delicious cuisine!

There were so many touching moments and fun surprises on our wedding day. My little brother made a video clip of all of my family & friends in Korea who could not fly to the wedding. I was crying so much when I saw my grandmother from the screen. It really meant a lot to me.

We found an amazing Hawaiian dance performance group, so we were all able to learn some hula, which was really fun. After our first dance, we surprised our guests with a choreographed K-POP dance–they loved it! My husband also performed a surprise dance later while we were going to do the garter toss. I was speechless!

We also had Eddo Lee, Alex’s cousin, as our MC. He is the most famous wedding MC in the Washington DC area and really brightened up our wedding and made it so much fun!

I really wanted our wedding to have a lot of personal touches. Since we were having a destination wedding, I decided to create passport and boarding pass invitations and save the dates. It was time consuming but totally worth it!

I also made us Mr. and Mrs. chair signs and champagne glasses–both ideas I got from Pinterest of course! The guest book and custom Instagram photo booth prop was fun and easy to make, but definitely a challenge carrying it all the way to Maui and back home! Because we were having an outdoor wedding, I thought it would be a good idea to have our wedding programs be printed on fans, I spent a lot of time picking out the right texture paper and color for the programs.

Finally, I created the sunglasses sign and custom sunglasses for our guests. I made my own labels with different words to put on the sunglasses- the guests loved them! I definitely put a lot of time and energy into the wedding- but it was all worth it! Between all of the fun DIY projects and the amazing vendors, it was perfect!

Oceanfront Unplugged Destination Wedding in Maui

This right here is my love letter to the lens of Wendy Laurel, because honestly that woman could point her camera in any which way and I would still write it off as pure poetry. So, you can only imagine the beauty that unravels when she’s behind the lens of an oceanfront celebration on the shores of Maui. It’s pretty paired with perfectly unplugged 90’s details and we’ve got it all in THE VAULT!

From Wendy LaurelDoes the Nineties bring back fun memories? Slinkies, slap bracelets, Pez candy, mixed tapes and aqua net were all present and accounted for. Bright colors and mohawks.. all of this fun was a great theme for Sabrina and Soda’s otherwise traditional destination wedding on Maui. The couple combined the classic timelessness of a traditional wedding style with the fun accessories from the 90’s.

Surrounded by family and friends from all over the world, the couple tied the knot on the shores of Maui with palm trees, ocean, and tradewinds. They danced the night away on the neon colored 90’s dance floor and had a great time taking photos with the 90’s accessories and all their friends.

Jewel Tone Maui Destination Wedding

When two busy doctors tie the knot, a relaxed celebration is the name of the game. And that’s where a tropical destination wedding came in. They brought on the amazingly talented Vows Wedding & Event Planning plus Mandy Grace Designs to omit any stress from the equation, and their Maui nuptials radiate with joy in every image by Erich McVey. Destination brides, this happy day is what it’s all about.

From Vows Wedding & Event Planning… Then Seattle-based Kathleen and Aaron wanted to get away from the busy realities of their lives. Both are doctors and work around the clock, so planning sessions were often after the night shift at the hospital. Their love of nature and their yearning for a calm and relaxed day brought them to the magical island of Maui, Hawaii.

The vision for their day included these words and ideas: natural, eclectic, elegant with touches of modern, a warm and inviting dinner party vs. the typical wedding reception. We landed on a jewel tone color palette; bright reds, blues, purples and greens in both florals and greenery. The elegance was achieved with to-die-for vintage glass in the same hues, and nature’s presence with an ocean-like water color menu and napkins.

Our bride & groom, both vegetarians, are also foodies and wanted the reception to have a focus on elegant dining. The Chef at Andaz Ka’ana Kitchen known for being creative and using only fresh organic and local ingredients, treated vegetarians and meat eaters alike to an unforgettable four course meal. Relaxed, locally flavored music entertained all night while guest drank, ate and presented heartfelt toasts.

The surroundings that enveloped the couple, their families, and dear friends were the highlight of the day. The couple even snuck away from the reception for a few portraits during one of Maui’s legendary sunsets.

From Wendy Laurel….Adam and Scott have been together a long time. They have a daughter together. And they are a family. But they weren’t able to get married where they live in Australia so they combined their wedding and honeymoon and headed to Maui for a lovely destination wedding easy for both of their families to attend (families from Australia and the mainland US). The day was filled with small personal and sentimental touches — a grandfather’s pocket watch, the rainbow shirt Scott was wearing when he first met Adam, their daughter in the wedding ceremony, readings from Scott’s Aunt and another from one of their best friends, a custom made cake topper.

Hawaii Oceanside Elegance

Wendy Laurel always seems to know just went I need a good ‘ol dose of Hawaiian pretty, because when she delivers these gems my heart skips a beat. Designed by Mandy Grace and Couture Events Maui with sweet stationery from A & P Designs and cocktails from Garnish Craft Cocktail Catering, this gallery is honestly something to behold. And you can see it all here.

From Wendy LaurelKim and Phil love Hawaii, so they wanted an elegant destination wedding that took full advantage of the sun and sea in Maui. They chose Olowalu Plantation House because of its unique historic plantation home and the chance to have a backyard type wedding and reception right at the oceanside.

The details of the wedding were filled with personal mementos — such as the sea fans as a nod to their time spent living in Grenada. The sea fans had calligraphy on them and were placed on the back of their dinner chairs with a “Dr.” and a “Mrs.” for the groom and bride. A glass bottle was filled with personal notes from the guests. She used custom embroidered handkerchiefs for personal messages for her mom, dad and her Groom. All wedding attendees received an Aloha canvas tote bag filled with Hawaiian goodies and a handwritten vintage postcard with Kim and Phils’ name and wedding date printed inside as a memento. The cake servers were handed down from Phil’s grandmother for a special cake cut. And of course, the custom cocktails served by Garnish were a hit.

Glamorous + Romantic Haiku Mill Maui Destination Wedding

There’s glamour, and then there’s glamour. This wedding at Haiku Mill is definitely the latter. Playing up Haiku Mill‘s inherent beauty with a palette of ivory and gold, candles everywhere, and personal touches like the Jenga guest book, this stunning Bride and Groom created a magical setting to start their happily ever after. And Jana Dillon and Sunlit Films captured it to absolute perfection in the gallery.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/131025886 600 338]

From Jana DillonJessica and Samuel traveled to Maui to have their beautiful destination wedding at the rustic Haiku Mill. The beautiful bride got ready in the Cane House with her loving friends and family. For the ceremony, the most beautiful flower girl was the groom’s grandmother, who was escorted down the aisle with her grandson. The couple exchanged their vows at the steps of the old remains of the sugar mill that surrounded them in fully bloomed spring flowers that hanged from the ceiling and veins that grow up the cobble stones. Cocktail hour was held under a big mango tree that was full of mangoes while the bar offered handcrafted specialty cocktails that included “The Wimbledon,” “The James” and “Montauk” with a delectable cheese bar. For the reception, Jessica and Samuel performed their choreographed first dance while surrounded by their wedding guests who held sparklers around them on the dance floor. Followed by many heartfelt speeches the night unfolded with live music by Shea Derrick and Full Flavor which got everyone on the dance floor, and topped with a surprise ukulele and live song performed by a bridesmaid.

Romantic + Traditional Hawaiian Wedding Inspiration

To say that I’m uhb-sessed with the O’Malley Photographers would be putting it lightly, I mean, just glance at this oh-so-tropical inspo and you’ll understand. Planned in the hands of Christina Hartman of Wildheart, it’s an inspiration that’ll transport you to a lush enchanted garden carefully curated with Maui Executive Catering Company treats and that oh-so-dreamy landscape that only Hawaii can offer. It’s a combination that’s got us dreaming of sandy shores and lovely lei’s, and you can see it all unfold here!

From Stylist/Florist, Christina Hartman of WildheartInternational film photographers, Scott and Ashlee O’Malley of O’Malley Photographers, perfectly capture the rich, tropical gardens of the Haiku Mill on Maui’s north shore in this island-inspired inspiration shoot. The historic ruins of the Mill are a perfect backdrop of vine draped stonewalls, lush enchanted gardens and carefully curated French antiques, creating a romantic but distinctly Hawaiian backdrop.

Deeply inspired by our island home and its diversity of flowers and foliage, my intent was to create something that had an authentic sense of place using materials that are growing abundantly here. Our usual ideas of tropical flowers are bright and colorful, but there are many softer hues that can be used with various foliage textures to soften the boldness of a tropical palette. Urns filled with soft peach and pink orchids, gingers, banana flowers, and coffee, layered with ferns create verdant arrangements when placed on an indigo handmade table runner filling a long farm table. Drawing inspiration from tradition and honor, we create a floral footbath of lovely hibiscus to nourish and calm the bride. Also, keeping with the Hawaiian tradition of a lei exchange, a triple strand of crown flowers adorns her.

Bohemian

From Wendy LaurelThis editorial shoot was inspired by my love of the florals and the very feminine. I was inspired to create a wedding dress using flowers and Della from Dellables Flowers was able to fulfill my dream. I envisioned a very feminine shoot and thought about the rarity of a two bride wedding shown.

I was also inspired by my sister, who recently graduated from college and came out as a gay woman. She has always been very feminine as have the women she has dated! She has also always been a big fan of wedding blogs, but when she came out she knew she needed to find images that represented the ideal wedding she was looking for – but it has been hard for her to find. For my sister, I was inspired to show the two dress lesbian wedding in a very feminine way.

Della from Dellables Florals handmade a flower wedding gown in bright spring colors. She used the crinoline skirt from under an old wedding dress and glued flowers and flower petals over it and a separate white bustier. We paired the floral gown with Claire Pettibone wedding gowns that were also very feminine and lovely from her Romantique collection. Dellables made the floral crowns and the florals for the table. The hand drawn wedding invitations, the table design and cake and cookies were are all inspired by the feminine and spring feel of the dresses and florals. Opihi Love’s talent for design pulled all the elements together in a gorgeous way.

Surprise Maui Proposal for Morgan from Survivor + Kevin

When photographer Wendy Laurel got a call from Morgan to do a couple’s shoot for her and her boyfriend, Kevin, neither of them knew yet what was in store for that special day… A surprise proposal! Luckily, Wendy was there to capture the adorable couple in all their newly-engaged bliss, and was sweet enough to share all the snaps with us in the gallery here!

From Wendy LaurelIf you ever watched Survivor — the Beauty vs. Brains series, you might not expect that Morgan is as sweet and soft spoken as she is. We all knew she was beautiful though. Morgan and her boyfriend, Kevin, headed out to Maui for a little vacation. She called me up and scheduled a fun couple’s shoot. Little did she knew that Kevin was going to propose on that same day. She said YES of course!

The wind was blowing, the sun was in and out of the clouds, the surf was loud… all in all, a pretty typical beach day on the upper west side of Maui. Morgan and Kevin are so in love and so sweet with each other. It was such a fun time shooting them together.

Destination Maui Plantation Wedding

This adorable couple not only held their Big Day in gorgeous Hawaii, but their beautiful nuptials were also filled with intimate and personal touches, like sealing their scroll-scribed vows in an empty wine bottle after reading, only to be taken out and re-read on their one year anniversary. So cute! Jasmine Lee Photography captured all the love on this special day in the gallery here, and we can’t get enough!

From The Bride… My vision of our wedding was to have a romantic space with natural beauty, and Olowalu Plantation House was the perfect setting for that. We fell in love with Olowalu the moment we saw the venue online. The house itself was very cute with its own bridal suite, and the views were spectacular. Our friends asked if we’ve ever visited the venue before booking, and the answer was no. The first time we saw the venue was during our rehearsal, and we were blown away by the beauty of the plantation the moment we stepped foot on the property. It far exceeded our expectations.

We both knew we wanted our wedding to be small, intimate and laid back. I chose blush pink and gold as our wedding colors for a romantic look. Our top priority was to have good food, music, and drinks with the people we love. Our intimate wedding was consumed with our love for each other and the love we have for our friends and family. The day was incredibly special for us.

In additional to our vows, we wanted to incorporated something special during our ceremony. The night before our wedding, we wrote personal vows to each other in which we rolled up and tied like a scroll. During the ceremony, we sealed our vows to each other in an empty wine bottle to be read on our 1 year anniversary. We loved this idea as we can display this bottle in our house to remind us of our wedding day. I cannot wait for our anniversary to come so we can read our vows to each other!

The two best decisions we made were to hire Jasmine Lee as our photographer and Susanne Brunsch as our day-of coordinator. We asked Jasmine to photograph our wedding after seeing her incredible work, and we are so glad that we did. Jasmine was very helpful in giving ideas and being patient with us. She captured our wedding day beautifully and we will cherish her images forever. Hiring a day-of coordinator was definitely key in helping us keep our sanity throughout the planning process, as well as the wedding day. Susanne was very attentive and made sure everything was set up beautifully and that we were comfortable. Both Jasmine and Susanne were very sweet, organized, and responsive to emails. They went above and beyond to meet our expectations, and we would not hesitate to hire them again.

Getting married in paradise was a surreal feeling and a moment we’ll never forget. Having someone I’m in love with to call my husband, is absolutely magical. Hawaii will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Whimsical + Elegant Backyard Wedding Inspiration

Surrounded by salty air and oh-so-beautiful scenery, this next piece of paradise is sure to ignite some wanderlust. Not only does it include one cute as can be puppy, it also has some of the most beautiful organic touches a la Mauis Angels Weddings. Every capture from Wendy Laurel is more beautiful than the last and you can see it all here!

From Wendy Laurel… Mauis Angels designed this updated Hawaii take on the backyard wedding. Backyard weddings have grown up and can be as elegant as any wedding. On Maui, backyards often come with golden sunshine, palm trees, and a spectacular ocean view.

With The Olowalu Planation Estate as our backdrop and a picture perfect Maui day, we designed a set up that embraced a modern backyard elegance with a few entertaining details. Hues of grey and blush, accompanied by ivory and white undertones were intricately placed throughout which undeniably brought out the very best of the custom designed Joelle Perry gown. The Geronimo balloons were simply for fun, as was our model dog Tyrone who enjoyed his very own bite sized peanut butter cake that Cake Fanatics carefully created to accompany the other bite sized desserts.

Jes with Maui’s Angels dreamed up the beautiful hand tied bouquet along with the gorgeously placed accents of david austin garden roses, silver dollar eucalyptus, dusty miller and white peonies. And a big thanks to Amber with Schyne Designs who carefully crafted the lovely invitations and dessert frills and also our dear friend Sunya who helped us build and execute the details on our handmade dining canopy. All in all, the day was just as any other perfect Maui day, magical and with these amazing vendors, one that we will hold close to our heart.

10 Ways to Plan an Eco-Friendly Wedding

While planning a bepsoke, style centric celebration is at the heart of SMP, so is crafting a wedding that makes the world a better place. Over the years we’ve been inspired by brides who put sustainability at the forefront of their festivities (see some of our faves here + here) and in honor of Earth Day we have Allison Beal of StyleSaint, and Rebekah Carey of A&B Creative here to share their tips for an eco-friendly “I do” from start to finish. Ashley Kelemen captured the bridal beach shoot they crafted with this very sentiment in mind, and there’s more moments to pin in the gallery.

1. FORAGE FLOWERS/GREENS + BUY LOCAL AND IN-SEASON

Foraging for greens to supplement your bouquet and centerpieces is a great way to be sustainable as well as save money. Fields, abandoned lots, and sides of roads are great places to go foraging. Try not to take more than 25% of any particular plant. If you’re buying flowers, farmer’s markets and local flower farms are great places to start. Try to always use what’s local and in season.

2. USE SILK SCRAPS AS FLOWER RIBBON

There is nothing more beautiful or personal that taking the scraps from your dress hem and adding it to your beautiful bouquet. Not only is the quality of fabric the best you could find, but it also adds a personal touch.

3. CHOOSE A REHEARSAL AND SHOWER DRESS YOU’LL WEAR AGAIN

Reserving your “wear once” purchase to only your wedding dress not only reduces wasteful spending but also ups your closet game.

4. PICK DECOR ITEMS YOU’LL REUSE IN YOUR HOME OR GIFT TO OTHERS

If you aren’t renting, try to purchase used (i.e. vintage candle sticks) or ones that you can use again or give away. If you were to make your napkins for example, a great idea is to give them to friends and family as holiday gifts in packs along with a loaf of bread and jam.

5. CONSIDER LIVING CENTERPIECES THAT CAN BE PLANTED POST-WEDDING

Planted flowers and plants make beautiful centerpieces! In addition to being “green” they can double as favors for your guests and you can even plant some at home after to remember the special day.

6. SERVE LOCALLY SOURCED FOOD

As farm-to-table becomes more and more prominent, catering companies are more likely to have relationships with farms and vendors who can help them create a local, in-season menu for you.

7. ASK YOUR CATERING COMPANY TO COMPOST AND RECYLE

Feeding a group of people at a single time creates a lot of waste, simply having compost and recycling for your catering company can make a big difference.

8. PROVIDE HAND TOWELS IN YOUR BATHROOMS INSTEAD OF PAPER TOWELS

Providing beautiful hand towels for your guests in the bathrooms instead of paper towels not only reduces waste but feels more luxe.

9. REDUCE PAPER IMPACT

We’re so lucky that today there are beautiful paper options that are also 100% post-consumer recycled. You can use less paper by having your maps, registry information, etc. available on your website as opposed to printed out and included with your invitation. Having a large program at your ceremony and a large menu at your reception also allows your guests to know what’s going on, but eliminates the need to have individual pieces for each of your guests.

10. RENT INSTEAD OF BUY WHEN IT COMES TO DECOR

Vintage rental companies and other niche rental outfits are such an amazing resource for decor. It limits last minute impulse buys and also frees up time that would otherwise be spent scouring Craigslist.

A Wedding with a Pop of Color

Like a little black dress with a fabulous pink shoe, this wedding is the pop of color that every bride loves. And when we say color, we mean COLOR! Bright, pretty pinks and reds and hues that make you want to sip a rum punch and dance the night away. Held at the Haiku Mill with photographs from Anna Kim and florals by Mandy Grace, this little gem is all about the pretty. And there is more here!

From the Bride… Coming from two very different backgrounds, and with family and friends in Asia, Europe, Australia and the USA, we decided to hold the wedding in a location that was on “neutral” ground! We just so happened to pick one of the world’s best wedding venues and that was apparent from the moment we started planning the day with the amazing team at Haiku Mill.

Favorite moments…
THE BAND. Erin and the band were amazing! Having David Wolf playing with them was a special treat which we really weren’t expecting. For me, that made the evening, especially as we are music lovers.

THE PHOTOGRAPHERS. Having the photographer who took the photos which helped us to choose Haiku Mill as our venue take our photos on the day! Anna Kim and her assistant were amazing.

THE FLORAL DESIGNERS. Mandy Grace turned the Mill into a beautiful dream with her floral designs. It was breath-taking to say the least!

THE VENUE. The concern that the Haiku Mill had for our happiness and the happiness of our guests. From bringing in extra generators to ensure an electricity supply (after the power got knocked out the night before in an epic storm) through to producing extra bottles of whiskey when our guests finished the bottles we had on hand, the sheer care and attention we received from Lindsay, Silvia and the rest of the team ensured that we had a truly magical day.

THE FOOD. Maui Executive Catering outdid themselves! And I will always remember that steak as one of the best I’ve ever had!

Luxe Wedding at The Haiku Mill

The Haiku Mill is one of the world’s most spectacular venues. Bottom line is that every wedding held in this special space is beautiful. But when you layer in a drop dead gorgeous bride, a style that is as luxe and chic as it is romantic and little details that incorporate a sense of home, The Haiku Mill becomes all the more lovely. With photos from Anna Kim Photography, a design by Mandy Grace and rentals from Ophie Love, this is a wedding for the books!

From the Bride… Everyone dreams of the perfect wedding, but Haiku Mill managed to meld a flawless night with our unique style as a couple. When Peter proposed on a North Shore Oahu beach in February 2013, we knew we wanted to return to Hawaii for our wedding. The Haiku Mill offered the perfect mixture of elegance and Hawaiian traditions. With our wedding coordinator’s help, our guests were treated to white orchid leis that indicated their table numbers, signature tropical drinks mixed with fresh lilikoi juice, and a wedding cake made with mangoes picked from the grounds of the Haiku Mill.

Our wedding was more than a tropical getaway for 70 of our closest friends and family. It perfectly captured our love for one another in a fairytale setting. There are many beautiful places to get married in Hawaii, but standing under the stars inside the Haiku Mill is a sight unlike any other. Aloha!

Soft Blue Hawaii Wedding Table Inspiration

If ever there was a day to get completely swept away by the beauty of weddings, today would be the day. This little slice of inspiration heaven sent our way from photographer Wendy Laurel, designers Mandy Grace Designs and Couture Events Maui, is kind of like drifting away on a hammock without a care in the world. Perfectly sweet design elements, a sense of grace built into every detail and a gorgeous bride all wrapped up into inspiration for ANY wedding. And there is more here!

Mandy Grace Designs

From Wendy LaurelBlue is the color of Hawaii. We have blue oceans and blue skies so designers Mandy Grace (Mandy Grace Designs) and Erica Goldsmith (Couture Events Maui) dreamed up a soft blue wedding inspiration for a fresh take on a Hawaii destination wedding.

They chose an upcountry Maui venue for its wind, sun, fields, and trees. Using hand dyed silk ribbons from Adorn (a new passion of Mandy Grace Designs), blueberries, and loose blue florals, they styled a light airy blue table. Matching in various shades of blue and white Miss B Calligraphy hand-wrote lovely invitations and envelopes with vintage stamps. The classic Audrey Hepburn-style bridal gown and blue shoes added a touch of classic and fun. The pillows were handmade by Couture Events Maui.

From the beautiful Bride… As a wedding planner, I have been fortunate enough to be a part of countless beautiful weddings and have witnessed more than my fair share of the joy and love that occurs at them. Being on the other side of things, as the Bride, was an experience I couldn’t have prepared for though, and it was truly the time of my life!

Nick and I first met back in 2006, through a mutual friend, one night out at a local bar. Within weeks, we became inseparable, and have spent the last eight years together sharing in life’s big and small moments, creating a home, building our businesses together, enjoying mornings, soaking in sunshine, and oh yeah…traveling to Maui. We love Maui more than any other spot in the world. And after six straight years of traveling there together, it has become our home away from home.

When we first got engaged, the thought of planning our wedding locally was overwhelming to me, as I knew that it would just feel too much like work. I wanted the weeks leading up to our wedding to be fun and relaxing for both of us, and we both wanted the spot where we said our “I do’s” to be special to “us.” So, the decision to host our wedding in Maui was a no-brainer, and one that did not surprise any of our friends and family! We wanted to design a wedding that showcased what we love about Hawaii, create a relaxed atmosphere filled with high-end details for all our guests who traveled so far, and spend the day surrounded by our nearest and dearest. Nick and I love to host parties, and so infusing our personal laid-back, fun, and stylish style, came very naturally.

On our yearly trip to Maui, in 2013, we were able to meet up with the lovely ladies of Belle Destination, who I knew would be the perfect allies in planning our dream wedding. They helped us find the perfect venue, and shared with me all their top vendor recommendations. From their tips, I set to work building our A-team of vendors, and designing our perfect day! The best decision we made though was to bring the power duo, AMERIS, down from Victoria with us. I have had the pleasure of working alongside them many times, and the talent and instincts that they possess is ridiculous! And they are just as much fun as they are talented, and so having them a part of our day was so special. When we look through our photos, we know that we will forever remember not just how our day looked, but how we felt during those moments. And that is something that I will always be grateful for! So, to all you Brides out there… do NOT skimp on a photographer! The morning and afternoon, spent with our wedding party and photographers was a total blast, and one of my favorite memories is being carried over a fence by the groomsmen, to get to Nick for our First Look! Hilarious!

Our wedding ceremony, was special to us for so many reasons. It was such an intimate group of family and friends who were there with us, and getting to share that moment with them was amazing! We asked one of our best friends to perform our ceremony, and he made the whole experience incredible. He also managed to get ordained, and so was able to legally marry us, which was the cherry on top. My favorite moment of the ceremony would have to be split up into two: walking with my Dad towards everyone, and laughing as we stumbled through our vows.

Food and drink were really high on our priority list, and we couldn’t have been more thrilled with the quality that both Aloha Events Catering and Garnish Events supplied. Our friends constantly make fun of us for being self-acclaimed “mixologists,” and so getting to work with Steph and her amazing team at Garnish, was a dream come true! Not only are their drinks so tasty, but the level of attention to detail that they put into everything, is a wedding planners dream! My favorite drink we served, the “Rose-jito”, literally had a pink garden rose garnished on each one! Amazing!

Trying to narrow down my other favorite details is near impossible, but I will try. The florals by Mandy Grace completely exceeded my expectations! She perfectly infused the jewel tones of our palette (navy, purples, pinks, and white), and I couldn’t have dreamed up a more perfect bouquet! The chair garlands, our ceremony archway, and the fact that she was able to find peonies in October…incredible! Being able to dine al fresco, was a big priority as well! Back home, it is near impossible to host a reception outside without a tent. We took a big risk not renting one for our own wedding, but the gamble totally paid off, and we were treated to the perfect Maui evening. With the lights strung between the trees, candles lit on the table, and the stars above, it was picture perfect.

Creating the perfect guest experience was also really important to us, as we were so appreciative that so many of our friends and family would travel so far for us! We organized a few outings for everyone (snorkel tour, picnic lunch etc.), which allowed us to spend time with everyone! And on the actual wedding day, all of our guests hopped on a bus and were whisked away to the “secret” wedding venue. This was one thing that we had SO much fun with while planning, and it really built up the excitement for our guests! We managed to keep our wedding venue a total secret to everyone, and so they were driven along a windy coast-line, and towards the lava fields of South Maui, with no idea of where they were going! Once they arrived at the spot, they were greeted with custom cocktails, acoustic guitar music provided by the seriously talented David Wolf, and a million dollar view. The rest of the day/evening, was filled with lots of music, drinks, food, and laughs! As the night came to a close, and Nick and I were whisked off to our ride, we could hear them chanting “Newlyweds! One more song! Newlyweds! One more song!” The perfect end, to the perfect day!

Elegant Maui Destination Wedding

Maui weddings are gorgeous. Plain and simple. But this elegant affair planned by Belle Destination Weddings & Events totally takes that gorgeous and raises it to the next level. Captured by Tamiz Photography with florals from Bella Bloom Floral Boutique, this gallery will have you oohing and awwing until the very last image.

From Belle Destination Weddings & EventsWhen one envisions getting married in Maui, there is usually a beachy/tropical idea that looms in the mind; however, there are those who long for the destination experience while not compromising on their ideal classic wedding affair. Enter Mike and Megan, an absolutely adorable and fun-loving couple from Calgary looking to swap the cold for the temperate weather of gorgeous Maui. From the Bride…“We met at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in an undergraduate physiology class. We had a mutual friend in the class, but since Mike sat in the front row, and I sat in the back row, we chatted only periodically. At the end of the year, we found out that we’d both been accepted into similar four-year programs at UBC. This prompted an increasing number of Facebook messages, and lots of flirting in class, but neither of us was brave enough to ask the other out. It took another year of this before we finally went out on a date!” Then came the proposal! Mike pulled out all the stops, setting up a penthouse suite at a ritzy hotel during one of their many mini-getaways to Banff. From the Bride… “I knew something was up! Later in the evening, Mike presented me with a large gift, which, when unwrapped, revealed a smaller gift inside. This “Russian doll” present contained six increasingly smaller gifts, one wrapped inside the next. Removing the last layer of wrapping paper revealed an engagement ring!” The couple chose Maui as their destination location of choice. Giving their guests a break from their norm up in Canada was important, thought they were not necessarily sold on the traditional Hawaiian-style affair. From the Bride…“Initially we wanted to get married on the beach, but we soon found out that there are many potential pitfalls to consider when planning a beach wedding. All of the beaches in Hawaii are public, so you can often end up with some uninvited guests! Inclement weather, such as rain and blowing sand, can also be a challenge to work around. We found Haiku Mill on the Style Me Pretty blog, and we knew that it would be the perfect wedding venue.” Haiku Mill proved to be the perfect venue for the classic elegance they sought. It was a small affair of just 25 guests, keeping with their idea of a low-key wedding event. From the Bride… “We envisioned an intimate, low-stress, wedding with close friends and family. Deciding on a destination wedding was difficult, because we knew that several friends and family members wouldn’t be able to attend. But in the end, a destination wedding allowed us to spend more time with our guests, because we got to see them over the course of the whole week, not just on our wedding day. By the time our wedding rolled around midweek, everyone was in “vacation mode”, thanks to some beach time and plenty of poolside drinks. This made for a really relaxed and enjoyable wedding day!” The couple entrusted in us to design an event that would not only compliment and enhance the gorgeous venue, but also encapsulate the romance and elegance that they wanted their guests to experience. With the assistance of Bella Bloom Floral Boutique, we kept an emphasis on loose structured florals in neutral and cool tones, blending in accents of driftwood, and tons of candlelight. We utilized natural elements such as wood furniture – tables, chairs, and lounges, and candlelight to create warmth and rusticity. No detail was left untouched. Set provided the gorgeous specialty china, glassware, and flatware that adorned the place settings. The place settings were accented with a single fragrant gardenia (the bride’s favorite flower) to add another scent element to the guests’ experience. The result was dripping in utter romance and simple rusticity, creating the most perfect backdrop for this intimate and love-inspired event! All of the beauty of the event, and most importantly, that of the couple, was captured by the incredible Tamiz Photography.
