Rustic, Elegant Wedding in the Lavender Fields of Highland Springs Resort

Lavender fields, gorgeous California light, a stylish (and super in love) couple – I’m pretty sure that is the perfect recipe for a perfect wedding. Sprinkle in some gorgeous design and florals by Poppy & Plum and absolutely gorgeous photography by Ryon:Lockhart Photography, and we are left with a gallery too good to miss. See it all here.

From The Bride… Bryan and I met on eHarmony, and on our second date he told me, between laughs, that he would marry me. One year later we were engaged, and after nearly two years of wedding planning, we were finally married! When we envisioned our wedding day, we both agreed that we wanted it to feel like a big dance party, where our guests would eat good food and dance all night. We wanted our closest friends and family to gather in one beautiful place to celebrate a commitment we had made to each other, really, on our second date.

Five minutes into walking the 2,200 acre grounds of Highland Springs Resort, we knew we had to marry under the Olive Groves and walk the lavender fields together. About an hour outside of Los Angeles, our family and friends would stay in the rustic cottages on the property and our wedding would feel like a wedding weekend, and not just a one night event. The sunset would be magical and the lavender would be beginning to bloom. And to satisfy the hippie in me, our guests would eat delicious farm-to-table meals. To me, the grounds were peaceful and romantic, just like Bryan.

On the morning of the wedding day, my bridesmaids and I had a relaxing breakfast before getting ready, while the boys took turns throwing each other into the pool. And as I got ready, I watched the amazing girls of Poppy & Plum set up and decorate the grounds. The white lanterns hanging in the wedding tent were turned on, and the tables beautifully decorated with white and blush flowers, gold mercury glass candles, and lavender-filled sachets (made by my grandmother) placed at each table setting. I loved how the rectangular tables outlined the dance floor. The finishing touch was the lawn games our guests would play during cocktail hour which included homemade corn hole toss boards and hula hooping.

The day, and really the entire weekend, was perfect! The weather was warm with a nice breeze, my uncle Howard delivered the most honest and genuine ceremony, and our family and friends danced, ate cake and danced some more. Our wedding was exactly what we had envisioned–I felt the most beautiful I have ever felt, our vows were personal and our ceremony intimate, and our family and friends spent the weekend together celebrating us.

Chic Chicago Wedding at the Greenhouse Loft

I love, love, love Olivia Leigh Photographie. Why you ask? She never fails to send us weddings that make our heart beat a little faster, and this chic Chicago wedding beautifully planned by Estera Events at the Green House Loft is the most stunning example. Her images left this couple with a gallery of images they will cherish forever, and you can cherish them too right here

From Estera EventsWhen I first met Lauren over a cup of coffee, we immediately connected. She was so warm and friendly, and mostly, excited to marry Jeff. After talking about her vision for the day, she casually mentioned she would be wearing a gold wedding dress and I think I actually squealed! The entire day was a dream. Lauren, her sweet sister Nicole and her beautiful mom all got ready at The Waldorf Astoria. Lauren and Jeff did their first look under the holiday tree in the courtyard of the hotel and were married at St. Hedwigs. Snow started to fall just as the ceremony ended, and guests exited the church with sparklers in hand while Lauren & Jeff ran to their getaway car. The reception was at Greenhouse Loft – an amazingly beautiful event venue in Chicago with enormous picture windows. With over 250 candles, a majority dipped in gold, the entire room glowed. The cake was flecked in gold leaf and a light snow fell outside the picture windows the entire evening. It was such an amazingly magical day and we were more than thrilled to be part of it!

Beaver Creek Ski Resort Wedding

Listen up, winter lovers because this wedding is one best viewed with hot cocoa in hand. Beautifully planned by We Tie The Knots, it’s proof that snow-filled nuptials can be wildly romantic, and the pine cone-clad bouquets by Vintage Magnolia? Don’t even get me started. Cozy in to the gallery from Mi Amore Foto right here.

From The Bride…What made our wedding special was the amount of love and support that embraced us that day. We were surrounded by our closest fiends and family to share these moments with in such a majestic location. Beaver Creeks snow topped Mountains gave a perfect back drop to our marriage and Adalyn’s (our baby girl) baptism. Honestly every single detail made the day special.

Fun Sayulita, Mexico Wedding

The best part about a destination wedding? It’s the very best vacation of your life and you get to share it with everyone you love. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a fun wedding, but fun might be the understatement of the century with this wedding from Kate Price Photography. I don’t know about you, but I may or may not (okay, I’m guilty) have started dancing in my seat as I made my way through this gallery!

From the Bride… Sayulita was on my husband and my radar from the second we got engaged. Both being born and raised in Seattle, and currently living in San Francisco, we loved the idea of our friends and family packing up to head somewhere sunny for a week of celebrating. Sayulita was our first vacation as a couple and a first vacation with both of our families, so it felt very natural to choose to get married there. Natural, ended up being an understatement.

From the second we arrived, we were blown away not only by our accommodations but how much our friends and family loved it. It was a non-stop party from the moment we arrived, to the day we hopped on the airplane home. The feeling of having everyone that’s important to us in the same beautiful property, drinking tequila, watching fireworks, eating late night burritos, and participating in what was the most epic dance party of all time is indescribable. Of course, none (and I mean NONE) of it would be possible without Yazmin our planner, and Kate our photographer to capture each amazing moment. As the Instagram photos say….#vivalaslogan.

Scandinavian Inspired Winter Shoot in Maine

Winter might be a four letter word to most New Englanders but I promise you this shoot crafted by Maine Seasons Events and Brea McDonald Photography will have you rethinking your wedding season. Perhaps a romantic snowy wedding is in your future? Infused with Scandinavian touches and pops of red, this tablescape is an ode to cold weather coziness. Check out the full gallery here!

From Maine Seasons EventsInspired by the straw ornaments, clean color palette and simplicity of Scandinavian design, Maine Seasons Events created a wedding inspiration shoot with a winter feel. Elements of straw, fir balsam and wood were incorporated with a wintery palette of icy blue, black, red and gray. Philadelphia Wedding full of Colorful Florals

The colorful arrangements in this Philly wedding are beyond beautiful. Pure Design gives us peonies + garden roses all perfectly placed in shades of peaches + pink for the prettiest bouquets. And the sweet couple only adds to the cute captures by Emily Wren. Skip on over to the gallery to get a glimpse of the gorgeous.

Molly & Craig were married on 4/26/14 at the Power Plant Productions Studio in Old City Philadelphia. Before the ceremony we took pictures in Rittenhouse Square Park in Downtown Philadelphia. Molly grew up in Rittenhouse and the park held a lot of meaning to her and her family. After a few minutes there was a quick rain shower and we took shelter in a near by restaurant, Philadelphia’s Parc. Where we got some stunning vintage shots before heading over to the Power Plant studios for some more pictures and the wedding ceremony. Molly is very close with her family and the whole day was overflowing with love. I felt like as a photographer I could see the love everywhere and I think it comes through in these images.

Outdoor Wedding at The Ford Plantation

I’m a gold girl through and through. Yes, silver has its place, but for me a touch of gold wins every time. There’s something about the way it pairs with natural, earthy details that speaks to my style’s heart. So when Hyer Images brought us this next Georgia wedding, with its pretty little tablescape of gold china set around wooden planters by Amy Harvey Designs, my day got a little happier. Click here to see why!

Colors

Deciding where to have our wedding was a no-brainer. We wanted our wedding to be sophisticated, yet relaxed and not too stuffy. The Ford Plantation in Richmond Hill, Georgia (where the bride’s father resides) was the perfect fit for our vision—not to mention one of our favorite places on earth! The ceremony and reception were both held at the Main House, which is set on the Ogeechee River surrounded by cascading live oaks. It’s impossible not to fall in love with its unique blend of Low Country charm, natural beauty and timeless elegance.

We chose a color palate of grey, gold and emerald green, which we thought paid the perfect compliment (and respect) to the natural backdrop. We wanted the reception to mirror the location—old-world elegance blended with vintage and rustic details.

We designed and planned the entire wedding ourselves, and we are so happy and proud of how everything turned out. It was better than we could have ever imagined! From the homemade limoncello, DIY hand-painted chalkboard signs and potted lavender plants to the glass orbs hanging from the bistro lights and wine ceremony box handmade by the groom (a carpenter by trade)—we tried to infuse ourselves and our relationship into as many details as possible to create a truly unique experience for our guests. And—from the compliments we have received from wedding guests—I think we pulled it off! We couldn’t have done it without your website, which was instrumental to the entire process. So, thank you, for providing us with so much inspiration to plan our perfect wedding!

Getting to Know David Pressman Events

Day in and day out, I thank my lucky stars that I get to work in this biz. Wedding vendors are some of the most driven, passionate, and talented people I’ve met and it’s quite the inspiration. David Pressman Events is one of those people. From using his fashion sense with brides while dress shopping to helping couples find the perfect venue to pulling together kick-butt teams of vendors for each event, David is a planner extraordinaire—and we’re getting to know him a bit more today. Keep reading for the interview below, sprinkled with gorgeous imagery from Aaron Delesie!

SMP: Working previously with American fashion icons such as Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, how does fashion inspire your weddings?

DPE: Once you’ve had the opportunity to work with one of the great fashion designers, it’s really hard to ever get that out of your head, no matter where life steers you. For weddings, those amazing experiences (and time with couture designer Mary McFadden and the brand Ellen Tracy) made me so aware of the inspiration behind each collection, and the research and creative essence that was driving that designer in terms of everything. From the overall style of a design collection to fabrics and colors, to lighting, music, and even chairs chosen for fashion editors and clients to sit in.

An answer in one word, would be “completely.” What I’ve learned in fashion taught me how to understand that the big picture would never come to life without all of the details being perfect.

SMP: Any favorite wedding dress designers?

DPE: Damn. That’s so hard because part of my process is to take my clients shopping and see them in all sorts of dresses until it becomes obvious what style or designer is going to be perfect for them. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a woman doesn’t know until she’s in the actual dress and has someone trusted – without an agenda – who can be honest and gently point out what works and doesn’t.

The final dress down a fashion runway is generally the wedding gown, so I lean towards designers who create, and with all due respect, more than wedding gowns. Vera Wang is a great example and clients are surprised when I walk them through the evening and Ready-to-wear items they can add for their after-party honeymoon or just to collect to build a wardrobe of perfect pieces. Along those lines Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Delphine Manivet, Elie Saab, Monique Lhuillier and of course Chanel all stand the test of time. In terms of wedding gown designers Claire Pettibone continues to stun me with the delicacy of her work and fabrications that go into her stunning gowns and each new collection from Lazaro just makes his reputation that much stronger.

SMP: We love the simple, understated beauty in the weddings you design. Following the “less is more” approach, how do you create a clear sense of style?

DPE: I start by engaging my clients in a conversation and asking lots of questions so I can find out what is most important to each of them. Unless I’m given carte blanche by a client to make all design decisions, I will share curated lists of photographers and other vendors for them to check out. Their response lets me know how stuck they are on what they thought they wanted after our second or third conversation.

If the wedding destination is Cabo for instance, it’s highly unlikely that I would design a Hollywood Deco type wedding. So the destination or venue is very important to the design process for every vendor that becomes part of the team I’m assembling. A huge part of my job is getting that team right. And I consider everything from how hard the load-in at the location will be, to how many events will come together to make up this particular wedding experience and what that’s going to require of everyone. The planner part of me wants everything on THE day to come off just like it is on my timeline, but the designer in me knows that isn’t always possible, so in addition to “less is more,” I also believe my clients have hired me to make their day as close to 100% stress-free as possible (sometimes no one can prevent that one toast from going on too long), which means a drama free team too.

Another major attribute to having a great team is the ability to feed off of other ideas. I may have a vision for my client in my mind, but if the floral designer or décor house has a better idea than I want to hear that idea. My goal is to deliver an unforgettable wedding, start to finish. And collaboration is key to achieving that goal for me.

In my world of design, change is allowed up until the very last moment possible and if I believe it will serve my clients better, than let’s go for it – all things being equal and not going over budget. I don’t believe that style can be bought, but I do believe that it can be seen and sensed. A perfectly lit table has style; guests look better, they feel better, they photograph better. Less is more, especially if it means pulling something at the last minute when you realize one fewer element is going to add more to the overall look of the design you’ve been working on for months.

SMP: Being a location manager in a previous career, we have to know, where are your favorite wedding destinations?

DPE: I love the challenge of creating something new for every wedding I work on. A great deal of which comes down to making the destination work. Whether it’s a working motion picture sound stage outside of Detroit or the lobby/rooftop of an amazing Art Deco building in Manhattan, some destinations can be more “challenging” then others for purely logistical reasons. But if one has the means, a way can always be figured out to make the chosen destination work.

So in addition to saying that my favorite wedding destinations are where my couples have the time of their lives, I’m going to say places with lots of flexibility, no rules about when the party has to end, lots of interesting spaces to use and access to nature. That means incredible resorts that can be bought out, private estates whose neighbors are either invited or too far away to care about noise, city spaces that have character and great bones and the perfect backyard. And anywhere fireworks are allowed!

SMP: What is a typical day in the life of David Pressman Events?

DPE: I have a to-do list on my desk. Unless I have a morning breakfast with a client or colleague and I’m not on the road early to check out a potential venue, I like to start each day by putting a very healthy homemade protein smoothie on top of that list, feed the cats and reply to any inquiries that might have come in during the night.

As a wedding & event designer/planner some days are filled with meetings or networking events all over the place. So I might start in West Hollywood, meet a client for breakfast or lunch, drop off my dry cleaning, and head back to the computer if I’m working on updating budgets, sending venue pics and links to clients, etc. As I’m driving around doing errands I like to note potential event locations, sometimes I’ll just stop and go inside. I take photos to remember things, Instagram images that I find inspiring, provocative or just fun to share – and yes, once in a while an indulgent selfie. By 4pm I try to phone my 91-year-old mom back on the East Coast so I can find out if she won at Bingo; she likes to ask me when I’m getting married…

Since David Pressman Events is a true boutique business, i.e., I bring on assistants when I’m actually in the last days before a wedding or event. On average about three nights a week I’m out networking with colleagues or checking out new venues and restaurants. If I’m not out or catching up with friends, chances are I’ll be right where I am now, at my desk catching up on emails, and make a new to-do list for tomorrow. And finally, I have a terrible habit of loving to watch TV via TiVo late into the wee hours, sometimes with a pint of my favorite gelato and almost always with a pile of magazines and books. Don’t ever think that wedding designers & planners have great diets, because we don’t.

SMP: Best piece of advice for newly engaged couples?

DPE: Hire professionals. Trust them. Never forget that it’s your wedding day, no one else’s.

Preppy Rehearsal Dinner

Though most people get all giddy for the wedding, I happen to look forward to the rehearsal dinner most of all. It’s at this point that anticipation is at it’s highest, the bride and groom are typically beaming, and the excitement is virtually palpable. Plus? If you have Esla Events at the helm, it’s going to be just as gorgeous as the big day. With photos from Jessica Burke, there’s more right here!

From Laurel… Warm and bright — that was the kind of welcome that Lisa and Ethan wanted to give their closest family and friends as they arrived at Bardessono for the wedding weekend. They incorporated bright pinks, tulips, and checkered linens into the event’s design, with the aim of creating a casual and welcoming environment. Both this couple and venue are beautifully chic and modern in style, but Lisa and Ethan’s top priority was to make sure everyone felt 100% at ease and comfortable. By pairing bright and youthful details with the sleekness of the setting, they achieved the perfect balance between casual and special.

In addition to making it a warm and festive dinner visually, Lisa and Ethan wanted the activities to follow suit. They decided to skip traditional toasts and instead asked each guest to share a short memory or story. Each guest brought a photo from home of Lisa and/or Ethan, and then shared the story behind it with the group. (These photos were then pinned up on a board and displayed together at the wedding the next day.) This story-plus-photo idea proved to be an amazing way to bring the entire group closer, with equal measures of happy tears and gut-wrenching laughter.

Autumn Backyard Virginia Wedding

Anything Karson Butler Events touches turns to instant wedding gold, and the proof is in the pudding. We’re talking a classic-yet-contemporary autumn “I do” with blooms by Sidra Forman and stationery handiwork from Meant To Be Calligraphy. It’s a celebration of two D.C. sweethearts – who met working the last presidential campaign! – and lucky for us the pretty from Amelia Johnson is just getting started.

From Karson Butler… Sarah & John are as sweet as they come, and we were so honored to plan & design their East Coast wedding with their families. The couple met while working on the last presidential campaign and now reside in Washington, DC.

They were married at the LDS Temple followed by a reception at the bride’s parents house in McLean, Virginia. We loved designing an event space that would foster a true celebration of love and family. From an incredible infusion drink station, to comfort food stations, and mixed seating throughout the tent, we were so very honored to help with this very special day!

Bordeaux Inspired NYC Bridal Session

Romantic, elegant and beautifully captured by Kate Ignatowski, this stunning bridal session styled by Mandy Forlenza Sticos is image after image of pure perfection. Inspired by the Bride’s upcoming winery venue, every detail – from the gorgeous calligraphy by Fleur De Letters to the breathtaking blooms – is swoon-worthy and then some, and you can see them all here.

From Kate IgnatowskiThis pretty bridal session was inspired by my real bride, Laura, who so graciously volunteered to model for us. Her wedding next month is at a winery, so Mandy, our stylist, had the idea of creating a Bordeaux inspired shoot with dark reds and enthusiasm for good wine. We kept the shoot simple with an emphasis on gorgeous bridal photos and added some perfectly styled details to complete the inspiration. Delicious cheese always accompanies wine so perfectly and organic, wood details were incorporated in the box of grapes and accenting the postcard from Bordeaux. Finally, my favorite, our hand drawn French card translates “Life is too short to drink cheap wine.”

From The Bride…Ken and I had known each other for many years, having met back when he was a helpful senior in Uni. Through chance and circumstance, our friendship brought us closer together until we decided to take our relationship to the next level.

That was 2 years ago.

Now that the wedding is only months away, I look back at the moments that defined our romance with unbridled fondness. Having a great friend for a lover is having your cake and eating it too. There is intimacy with trust. There is passion with joy. There is solace with adversity. I wanted it to last forever.

Which is why I said “YES!!” when he asked. It started with a romantic candlelight dinner at one of our favourite restaurants in town, followed by a gentle stroll by the moonlit foreshore. As we approached a secluded bench overlooking the harbour, he sat me down and disappeared momentarily, only to return with a bouquet of beautiful red roses. Within them was a surprise; a ring box! Filled with anticipation I flipped it open, only to find to my complete dismay that it was empty!!

I must have looked ridiculous when I turned to face him, a mixture of frustration and disappointment. Of course, there he was on one knee with a cheeky smile on his face, producing the ring from his pocket. He always loved to keep me guessing although this time I could’ve done without the suspense!

We spent the week leading up to our engagement shoot concerned as the gloomy (and occasionally somewhat rainy) weather threatened to interfere. Thankfully the sun was shining through practically the entirety of the session, leaving us with a truly magnificent backdrop. We were also fortunate enough to have met with the most amazing wedding vendors — Jenny Sun Photography, Amy Chan Hair & Make up Artistry, Chanele Rose Flowers and Styled by Linda, who had all combined to make the day not only possible but incredibly special. We definitely had a memorable time out in the sun!

Romantic Paso Robles Winery Wedding

The way this Bride talks about her beau (now husband), is terribly sweet and melts my heart. From the moment they met at summer camp to building a strong friendship to the perfectly planned proposal and a blossoming love, which is so apparent in the stunning imagery from B. Schwartz Photography. You’ll want to carve out a good chunk of you afternoon for this lovely my dears.

From the beautiful Bride…Kyle and I met when I was just about to begin my sophmore year of high school, and he was about to begin his junior year. We met at summer camp, Hume Lake Christian camp, to be specific! I remember being out in the middle of the lake with some girls in my cabin when we met. I even remember the exact shirt he was wearing. Haha. After camp, we found each other on MySpace and begin building a friendship from that point on. He quickly became my best friend. I was so impressed by how easy he was to talk to, how much he made me laugh, and how absolutely different he was to me than any other guy I had met. Living 6 hours away at the time, we would stay up late nights skyping and talking on the phone. We could talk for hours and hours. It was hard to ever say goodbye or goodnight. After a couple years of building a solid friendship, we always knew we had feelings for each other but didn’t know how the long distance would work. We decided in February of 2011 to give it a shot and “officially” date. We remained long distance for about 10 months, taking multiple trips back and forth to see each other. In January of 2012, Kyle moved up by me to join the local Fire Academy. He ended up living with my brother and his wife for about 6 months during academy, then got his own place. He stayed up here ever since! The rest is history. I married my best friend, my complete answer to prayer.

Kyle took me to the place where we had our first date, up on a hill top overlooking beautiful Laguna Niguel. The view was breathtaking and brought back memories of the first date we spent together 3 years prior. To my knowledge, I thought we were just going on a walk like we had done the first time, little did I know he had much more planned. When we reached the peek, he got down on one knee and popped the question! The ring was stunning, I couldn’t believe it was mine! I remember asking him… ‘this is mine?!’ His brother was hiding in the bushes capturing the whole moment! It gets even better… Our families live 6 hours apart, so I was a little bummed knowing I would have to wait a few days to see my mom and sisters. The first chance I got, I called my mom to share in the excitement! Kyle told me that we would be going to dinner with his parents but we needed to stop by his house first. When we arrived, I was surprised by so many of his friends and family all cheering for us when we walked in. I still tear up thinking about it. As I walk further in the house admiring the beautiful decorations that his mom and my sister-in-law, Whitney put together, I hear my dad’s voice! I turn around and see my dad, mom and sister standing there. I immediately dropped to the ground. I was so overwhelmed with joy, something I have never in my life felt. Before we got engaged Kyle knew the only 2 things I really wanted was pictures of the moment and to share in the excitement afterward with family and friends. He definitely went above and beyond what I could of ever imagined!

Our first look was our favorite wedding moment. Definitely. Seeing each other for the first time, spending those first moments together, knowing what was about to happen, was indescribable. It was a crazy feeling knowing it was REALLY happening. Not to mention he looked so handsome.

Elegant Backyard Wedding in Australia

Moet & Chandon, garden roses and an elegant backyard… if I could hand-pick elements for a wedding re-do, these would all be a part of the mix. Backyard

From Bentinmarcs Fine Art PhotographySarah & Tristan had the sweetest intimate wedding held in their backyard with the closet friends and family members. To make the wedding even more amazing was the fact that Sarah and her Mum Kathy from The Ivory Gown made all the dresses, suits and Sarah’s beautiful wedding gown. I truly felt that I was part of the family, never feeling more welcomed at a wedding I even had my own table setting amongst the 18 guests.

From The Bride…I was never one of those girls who had her wedding dress planned in detail from a young age, which might be surprising considering I work with bridal gowns every day. I knew I wanted to include elements reminiscent of the glamour of the “Old Hollywood’ era, but largely let the design evolve as it was being made. I used all silk fabrics with the most beautiful, delicately beaded and sequinned lace and played around with the detail on the bodice until it looked just right. I had intended to sew silk covered buttons down the back of the dress, but I adored the way the lace looked without them, which meant I had to think of a new way to finish the back. The best and most seamless way was to be stitched into the dress! Although this might sound stressful to some, it actually felt really calming to have my mother slowly and carefully place the last stitches on the lace moments before the wedding. Having the opportunity to create my wedding dress with my mother was truly something special, and funnily enough one of the greatest fans of my dress became my dog, a 50kg Maremma, who sat right next to me on my silk train at every opportunity she could get!

Seaside Wedding Inspiration with Wedding Paper Divas

Now that my fiancé and I have chosen a venue and set a date for our summer 2015 wedding, the countdown is on and we’re ready to start the invitation hunt—my favorite part! I turned to the experts, Wedding Paper Divas, to scout out the perfect design for our seaside soiree.

Our Vision: After our beachside engagement, we knew a waterfront wedding was exactly what we wanted. To let our beautiful coastal venue speak for itself, we’re going for a soft, romantic style with a hint of classic elegance. Our color palette is blush, pale peach and a tiny bit of gold. With that in mind, we started the search for our design with a few must-haves: beautiful big lettering, the use of blush & gold, and texture.

Design 1: The Forever Laced design features those beautiful pink hues, inspired by the blushing sunset in our engagement photos. While the addition of lace patterning is the perfect detail for that elegant style we’re going for. I paired it with the Exquisite Artistry personalized coasters for a bit of reception fun.

Tip: If you’re feeling overwhelmed with choosing a design, narrow it down by selecting two to three must-haves.

Design 2: The second design we fell in love with was Forever Flair. A slightly more classic look, still featuring that stunning lettering but with the addition of gold foiling and more of our fun engagement photos. We added in the Diamond Sky marigold place cards to fancy up our tables.

The best part about picking our favorite designs? Wedding Paper Divas makes it super easy to customize, mix & match and truly personalize your wedding invitation suite so that it fits you and your wedding style. So my dears, I need all the help I can get—which one wins your vote?

Behind the Scenes with Winifred Paper Studio Tour

One of the most read and commented posts on Style Me Pretty actually took place on our Behind the Scenes blog, Backstage. It was a quick look at how I started a stationery business and the response that it garnered was crazy. So any chance I get to go behind the scenes with a stationer, I quickly jump on. Especially when said stationer is the lovely and talented Kelly Scarborough Watson of Winifred Paper. Read on to see how she built the beloved brand that she has today!

SMP: Tell us about Winifred Paper and how it came to be?

WP: Winifred Paper is a boutique design + letterpress studio based in Washington, D.C. We design and create timeless social stationery and paper for impeccable affairs. We are known for a love of unexpected details. It’s what we think sets us apart!

I have an unabashed obsession with paper, and have since childhood. Growing up, I would chat for hours with my grandfather about building a business, but never did I think I would marry the two. It all happened very organically. I learned letterpress in 2010 and was doing small jobs on the side for friends. Winifred Paper grew out of that. The most amazing thing about stationery is that it spreads like wildfire. One person finds you, and their 100 holiday cards or wedding invitations go out to their friends and family, and it just keeps going.

SMP: How many people do you have on staff and what are their primary roles?

WP: Until this year, it was a one-woman show– plus of course my dear husband, who has assisted from the beginning. I designed, printed, packaged, and managed both our wedding and business clients. Now our growing little team is just amazing. Currently there are three of us that work out of our design studio in Georgetown handling all design, managing our wedding invitation and business design projects, one remote, and our new pressman that’s starting in our tiny production studio just outside D.C.

SMP: What drew you to letterpress? Do you do your letterpress in house?

WP: I wanted to offer all brides the best stationery options possible. Our goal is to create letterpress that in and of itself was worth celebrating! It’s the tactile nature of letterpress that drew me in. That bite. The smell of ink. Swoon!

Our quality must be impeccable so we keep as much of our production in house as possible. We tend to mix letterpress with engraving and foil stamping and partner with some wonderful engravers and finishers. We couldn’t do it without them, too.

SMP: How do you use social media to support your brand? Favorite pinners? Favorite instagrammers?

WP: Social media is such an invaluable tool to reach across and connect with clients and our industry. When it came to designing our studio, we couldn’t have lived without Pinterest. And as we get to know our clients, we love to take a look-see at what inspires them!

I adore Instagram, it’s the big one for me at the moment. The brands that inspire me the most are those with positivity and realness to share. Sinclair and Moore, Emily Ley, Society Social do this well. They are a must follow!

SMP: What’s your greatest Achievement with WP?

WP: It’s right at this moment. We just moved in to this dreamy studio in Georgetown’s equally dreamy Book Hill neighborhood. We have more lily-gilding yet to do, but opening those doors in the mornings and chatting with the small businesses that line our street; it’s the bee’s knees.

SMP: What does your day to day look like?

WP: No two days are alike! I’ll tell you about a day we had last week. I started out early and headed over to press check a couple projects. As we are in the middle of producing our own collection and completing orders, I spend most mornings overseeing production. After giving feedback, I headed into our studio.

With a flurry of pantone chips and plenty of espresso within arms reach, mornings in our design studio are bustling and buzzing with activity! Much of my morning is spent catching up on emails, storyboarding and chatting with our custom wedding clients, sourcing, and keeping up on inventory. Our newest intern just started, so we went to lunch to get acquainted. Our design studio happens to be above Britt Ryan boutique, so after lunch, I took 10 minutes to pop down, chat over business and exciting holiday projects, and browse the new fall line. The afternoon is spent in a design meeting and packaging outgoing orders. A little later, I met with a local client picking up her darling Jewish New Year’s holiday cards. She came up with the most clever wording – “challah back, y’all!” – and it was wonderful to see her adore the finished product.

I finished up the last of my to-do lists, and headed home. I tend to get back to work around 9 for a couple hours at least. I’m a night owl through and through and I find the most inspiration in the wee hours. That’s when a lot of my creative and design work happens!

SMP: Biggest lesson learned in business?

WP: Listen to your gut.

SMP: One sentence (or a few words) that defines the kind of business owner you are or want to become?

WP: Do good and love what you do. Philippians 4:8.

Where the Wild Things Wed Inspiration

I love how one little darling detail has the power to inspire the style of a whole wedding, or in this case, a beautifully styled shoot crafted by Bottle Pop Party Co. and Kate Farley Design. That detail? A gilded, crown-like candlestick that resembled Max’s crown in Where the Wild Things Are. And what follows is the pretty result, starting with those lovely invites from Papertree Studios. See the rest in the gallery from Hudson Nichols Photography!

Whimsical

From Shannon at Bottle Pop Party CoWe came across these fabulous gold candlesticks at West Elm and they immediately made us think of the beloved children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. The crown detail on the candlesticks was exactly like the one Max was given by the Wild Things when he was crowned King of the Wild Things. One look in the book and we knew we wanted to design a wedding around the unique, muted color palette of mint, peach, soft yellows and stormy greys. Kate of Kate Farley Design and I styled the tablescapes, cake display, bar, accessories and guest book while being completely inspired by the adventures of Max and his journey to the island of the Wild Things. Of course, a wedding isn’t normally a children’s affair so we kept our wild touches reminiscent of the book and not quite so literal. The result ended up being whimsical and downright dreamy!

For the tablescape, we selected some of Kate’s personal place settings from Crate & Barrel and paired it with some wood grain chargers & jadeite tumblers from Terrain at Styers, wood grain flatware from Target, and some vintage brass candlesticks mixed in with pale grey & coral taper candles. Table linens were layers of sheer chiffon in shades of stark white, nude and mint green for a very dreamy, ethereal look.

Our model exuded the wild things look with her gorgeous flowing amber locks, simple, but regal gown and perfectly accessorized with belt and shoes from Anthropologie. A faux fur blanket gave an air of wildness that is the reminiscent of the Wild Things.

We brought in lots of mint green in the vintage pieces from Brandywine View Antiques like the bench and the pie safe that held the wedding cakes. Kate from Kate Farley Design brought the peaches alive in the wild & free floral designs and in the doughnut peach table accents. Kate also lended her artistic hand for the slate signage. Dark grays and blues popped off of the table in the plates & glasses as well as in the starry night paper suite done by Papertree Studio. Kristen of Hudson Nichols Photography captured it all with her eye for detail and placement. What started as a fun little purchase resulted in fun summer night of pretty wedding inspiration!

Romantic Outdoor Portland Wedding

This is the kind of the wedding that makes my heart do leaps. Because not only is it beyond lovely, but it’s also jam-packed with sweet, sentimental details that have me smiling ear to ear this morning. From the stunning Cathedral Park ceremony setting to the last piece of delicious pie consumed from the Baker And Spice pie bar, every moment captured by Brittany Lauren will warm your heart and then some, and you can see them all here.

From Brittany Lauren PhotographyAshley and Chris were married at Cathedral Park in Portland, Oregon on a very sunny and warm August day. Ashley wore a gorgeous vintage inspired gown with a full cathedral veil while Chris kept it classic in a black fitted tux. Chris’s family moved here from Scotland so of course there were kilts and bagpipes also in attendance. They said their vows under the arches of the St. John’s Bridge and then danced the night away surrounded by vines and lavender bushes at a family friends private residence. Their color scheme consisted of creams, whites, and green with touches of lavender at each table setting. They served their guests pies instead of cake because really, everyone loves pie!
