Rustic Blush and Blue Wine Country Wedding

Gorgeous as all get out without a single detail spared, it’s easy to see why we fell head over heels in love with this wine country wedding captured by Margaret Austin Photography and planned by Sugar Rush Events. But you know what the best part is? This couples’ gorgeous day looks like loads of fun too. It’s a day I’m sure all their guests are still talking about, and you can see all the reasons why in the VAULT.

From The Bride…Dien and I have visited wine country in California numerous times together and we thought it would be the perfect backdrop for our summer destination wedding. It’s beautiful and romantic, with tons of great spots to eat and drink!

We wanted our wedding to be simple and charming with rustic touches..and of course fun! And we wanted to be outdoors! With B.R. Cohn as our location, we were able to keep decor simple with pops of color and let the estate and vineyards shine. The property has so many picturesque expansive vineyard views and we were able to use different areas for each part our wedding celebration. Our ceremony was in their Oak Hill location under their grand oak trees, cocktail hour in their amphitheater that looks out to the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and the Sonoma mountain range and our reception in their intimate olive grove on the lawn.

It was such a memorable time and we are so happy our dogs, family and closest friends could all be a part of it!

Lush Garden-Inspired Yucatán Country Club Wedding

If ever there was a wedding that epitomized “Old World Romance,” trust me, this is it. The historic Hotel Mansion Merida with its elegant and opulent 19th Century architecture. The Bride’s gorgeous blush ballgown, which inspired the entire affair’s romantic and soft color palette. The stunning, lush flowers from Janina Diseño Floral that transformed the Yucatan Country Club into a magic forest. See all the pretty from Elizabeth Medina Photography in The Vault!

From The Bride…My color palette was pale and blush colors with lots of green and a little bit of peach. All the colors where inspired based on my dress which was blush. My style vision was a rustic, garden wedding. It ended more like a magic forest wedding, with lots of vegetation, trees and wood everywhere. I took the palette out of my Pinterest board. The bridesmaids’ dresses were lavender and provided a wonderful contrast to the blush and green.

The trees in the outdoor reception area were planted by my family, this area prior to the wedding was a plain garden which we converted into a magic forest. Also, all the tree trunks used in the entrance of the wedding were chosen and curated by my mother, the wedding planner and me.

My favorite moment was the first dance with my husband, it was such an special moment with a romantic song, holding each other really close, all our friends and family surrounding us with the sunset behind our backs. It was perfect! And definitely my favorite crafted detail was the garden roof, you couldn’t enter the reception without being astonished by the beautiful vegetation, it was something never seen before. It was so much more beautiful than I ever imagined it could be.

Romantic Coffee Shop Inspired Engagement Session

I’m someone who needs a few cups of coffee to get going in the AM, but today that’s all changing thanks to Jenn and Ryan’s cafe e-session. It’s just the jolt I need on this Saturday morning complete with latte art, sweeter than sweet kisses, and one seriously chic looking cafe. I mean, talk about major e-sesh goals, right!?! Best Photography captured it all to share in The Vault!

From Best Photographyy… There’s just something about delicious coffee and a couple in love that makes for a perfect match! Jenn and Ryan are foodie and coffee fanatics, so needless to say photographing their engagement session at Propagation Coffee was entirely fitting. It’s one of their favorite coffee shops around, and hey we LOVE coffee too, so we had a wonderful time. These two are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Uplifting, positive, energetic, and happy are just a few words to describe Jenn and Ryan. Having the opportunity to photograph such amazing people in an awesome location picked specifically for their love and passion, made for breathtaking images. The evening concluded with a few romantic shots in the beautiful Baldwin Park… We are so excited for their wedding next year, and we hope these photos bring inspiration to all of those in love, and to all who love coffee. Enjoy this romantic engagement session captured on film!

Wonder by Jenny Packham at David’s Bridal + A Q&A!

Guys, Jenny Packham is a genius… I don’t need to tell you that.  So when David’s Bridal called with an exclusive invite to view her debut collection, Wonder, we literally threw on our party pants. What awaited us?  A seriously stunning lineup of gowns from the designer that knows everything about glamour and elegance.  Scroll below for your very own sneak peek… and a Q&A with Jenny herself!

SMP: Tell us about your new collection, Wonder by Jenny Packham. What was your inspiration? What are some of the design details you used?

JP: The collection is inspired the ‘Belle Epoque’ era of the early 20th Century. It is a collection of romantically soft, feminine designs that encapsulate the spirit of Edwardian style at a time when society abandoned corsets and Art Nouveau was born.

The styles are very delicate with light beading and understated, flowing silhouettes that are evocative of that era, alongside more contemporary structured shapes, elegantly exposed backs and geometric embellishment for a very modern bride.

SMP: Who is the Wonder by Jenny Packham bride? How does she want to look on her wedding day?

JP: I believe the collection speaks to a bride who feminine, elegant and contemporary. She is drawn towards artisanal details and appreciates fine craftsmanship. She is looking for a relaxed, unstructured gown that makes her feel confident and beautiful.

SMP: What should brides keep in mind once they’ve selected their gown and are completing their bridal look?

JP: Accessories are the perfect way to add something special, a lovely detail to finish your bridal look. Choose pieces that are personal to you and remember, less is often more.

SMP: What are your favorite things for a bride to use as her Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue?

JP: When I got married, my something new and my something blue was my dress – I wore a grey blue guipure lace dress. I wore my Mother’s antique locket bracelet (my something borrowed) and an old 16th century sixpence coin in my shoe for luck. I wasn’t a conventional bride, but loved these sentiments.

SMP: One word you’d use to describe your collection?

JP: Desirable.

SMP: Name one Bride that you would’ve loved to dress.

JP: Lady Diana, but I was only 14!

SMP: How does designing Bridal differ from outfitting celebrities?

JP: I enjoy the challenge of designing something that has to be unique and special.

SMP: What’s one thing you always keep in mind when designing for your Bride?

JP: I believe a bride should feel like the most beautiful version of herself and when I am working on a gown, I am always considerate of the way the cut, draping and beading will best enhance her.

SMP: Any piece of advice for a bride who is shopping for their dream dress?

JP: Good underwear and an honest friend!

Chocolate Espresso Snickerdoodles

There are a few recipes I’ve been trying to master for quite some time, and the snickerdoodle is one of them. It happens to be my hubby’s favorite cookie, so the pressure is definitely on. But now that I’m armed with this delicious recipe from Wit & Vinegar and Fix Feast Flair , I think I can finally check mastering this finicky cookie off my list.

Chocolate Espresso Snickerdoodles
prep time
cook time
total time
Serves 0Ingredients
  • 280 g. (2 1/4 c.) all-purpose flour
  • 80 g. (2/3 c.) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. sea salt (or coarse kosher salt)
  • 226 g. (1 c.) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tsp. espresso instant coffee
  • 200 g. (1 c.) light brown sugar
  • 170 g. (3/4 c.) white granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 3 Tbsp. cane sugar
Instructions
  1. Sift together the flour, cocoa, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt in a medium-sized bowl.
  2. In another bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the butter, coffee, brown sugar, and white granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, making sure the first one is completely blended before adding the second one with the vanilla extract. Then add the cocoa-flour mixture in 2 batches so it doesn't fly everywhere, mixing just until combined. Refrigerate the dough for at least an hour to firm up.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350 °F (180 °C) and line a baking sheet with baking parchment (or a silpat mat)
  5. Combine the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl or pie dish, then use a medium cookie scoop (or 1 1/2 tablespoons) to portion out dough and roll in cinnamon-sugar to coat. Place on the baking sheet 2 inches apart and bake for 8-10 minutes until slightly flattened and crackly. You want them to be a little underbaked to ensure maximum chew. Cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  6. Serve and enjoy!

#SMPWedding101 – Save the Date Essentials

Looking back at the planning process, our Save the Dates stand out. They were so fun and sending those babies out amped up the excitement more than any other step beforehand. But when it came to the details, I’d be lying to say we weren’t a little lost. When to send, what to include? Well, Dancing Pen & Press is here to help all you brides-to-be get those questions answered and get onto more fun festivities!

Tip #1: Time It Right.

Save the dates should be mailed to your guests four to six months before your wedding date. For a destination wedding, or if your wedding takes place over a holiday weekend, it’s best to send your save the dates six to eight months (or more) before the big day.

Tip #2: Keep It Simple.

You don’t need all of the details at this point (that’s what your formal invitation is for). Your names, date, and location is all you need. If you don’t know the exact location yet, that’s okay. You can simply put the city, state (country, or island, etc).

Tip #3: Introduce the Website.

If you are planning on having a wedding website, the Save the Date is great place to let your guests know about it. This is especially nice for a destination wedding. As you plan more and more details for your wedding, you can share them with your guests on the website. It gets everybody pumped as you are to celebrate with you!

Tip #4: Cue the Plus Ones.

If you know for certain that you will allow your single guests to bring a date, now is a great time to let them know, so they can plan accordingly (hotels, plane tickets for two, etc) All you need to do is write “and guest” after their name on the envelope. The same goes for families. If you are including the kids, let the parents know by writing “and family” or personalize it and write the little ones names on the line after their parents.

Organic Napa Wedding with a Berry Palette

First things first – major kudos to Alison Event Planning + Design for pulling off a single 75-person dinner table where we’d probably all kill to snag a seat. In collaboration with amazing vendors like Bright Event Rentals, they brought the couple’s vision of an intimate vineyard-set gathering to life, with shades of berry thrown in for good measure. Sally Pinera photographed, and let’s just say we won’t be leaving The Vault any time soon.

From The Bride.. .Nick and I got engaged in early April 2015 so we planned our September nuptials in a relatively short amount of time, six months. We both work in the theatre in New York City; Nick is an actor and I am a producer. We knew that we were going to be beginning rehearsal for our new shows – Nick for Stephen Karam’s “The Humans” and Ashley for Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews’ “Invisible Thread” – in late September 2015, so we decided to have the wedding before we went back into the intensity of a rehearsal process. We chose Northern California because it is one of our favorite places in the world. We love wine and the relaxed vibe, plus we knew it was unlikely to have rain out there! Because we first met on Martha’s Vineyard it was meaningful for us to get married on another vineyard.

We live on the East Coast so we decided we would need to engage the help of a planner. I chose Alison Events almost strictly off of their Instagram. I loved their relaxed California style, that was sophisticated but not fussy. We made an initial visit to the Napa and Sonoma area to scout out some venues. We looked at 5 or 6 properties but nothing came close to the beauty of Wallace Creek Vineyards, the first venue we looked at. It is private estate on an amazing property that has over 100 acres of Vineyards in the hills above Healdsburg. We fell in love with the endless possibilities for locations on the property to take advantage of at the wedding. We chose four locations for the day – the ceremony site under a stunning oak tree; the cocktail hour in the backyard of the main house overlooking the Sonoma Valley; the dinner, one long table in between the Cabernet Sauvignon vines; and the barn for dancing and late night festivities. It was most important for us to make the one long 75-person dinner table in the vines work; it was tricky to pull off but we knew the result would be absolutely magical.

Nick and I stayed at Wallace Creek the weekend of the wedding. Before everyone arrived that day, we went on an early morning run around the property, passing each of our locations before they were set up and filled with people. It was a very special moment to experience the quiet and stillness of the morning before a day we knew would be very eventful. We chose to get ready together, which calmed both of our nerves. Nick made both breakfast and lunch for me that day and made sure that I ate while I was getting hair and makeup done. He knew that otherwise I would have forgotten to eat! We took most of our photos, alone and with our families, before our ceremony so we didn’t have to miss any of the time with our guests, most of whom had flown in from places far and wide especially for our wedding.

Our friend Lauren was an amazing and powerful officiant. Three of our best friends did readings, my sister, Chelsea, sang two songs – Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Case of You’ and a song she wrote especially for our wedding, and we read our own vows to one another. Including our close friends and family in the ceremony made it extra special. The ceremony music included string quartet versions of some of our favorite songs by Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and Edward Sharpe.

The dinner was definitely my favorite part of the evening. We had a four course seated dinner, so everyone, including Nick and I really had the time to enjoy the food and the wine and the company of our friends and family. At one point during the dinner, Nick and I decided to have an impromptu first dance in between the vines. I love that we decided not to schedule a lot of those classic wedding moments and allowed them to happen organically. It allowed us to be in the moment every step of the way.

I was smiling from ear to ear throughout the entire day (with the exception of the tears during the ceremony). It was incredible to be surrounded by so much beauty and love all in one day. Nick and I took a lot of mental and physical “snapshots” throughout the day, to take in all of the details and ephemeral moments that made the day so special.

From Alison Events… Ashley + Nick came to Alison Events with a vision of a laid back, elegant and authentic feeling wedding in a vineyard setting. They wanted to get married somewhere that felt remote, exclusive and off the beaten path with a major sense of arrival. This all was found at a private estate and vineyard in Healsdburg, California. They wanted to utilize lots of different areas of the property; under a hundred year old oak tree for the ceremony, by the pool for cocktail hour, in the vineyard for dinner and in the working barn for dancing. Given the large scale of the property, this was logistically challenging, but with a few golf carts and a lot of hard work, we were able to make the event feel effortless and seamless.

We wanted everything to feel as thought it had always been there. We rented simple birch wood benches from Bright Event Rentals and topped them with raw linen pillows in natural and slate tones from La Tavola Fine Linens. The floral designer, Natalie Bowen Designs provided small wooden bowls full of dried and fresh rose petals to toss at the bride and groom after they said I do. Ashley and Nick, both coming from an artistic background; hired students from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music to play contemporary music for guests as they arrived, they played a Radiohead song to walk down the aisle. Ashley’s sister, Chelsea also an actress, sang a Joni Mitchell song and a friend (spoken word artist and performer) took the role of officiant.

They wanted the food to be delicious, but casual, so we hired Sage Catering to produce the food and beverage portion of the event. Appetizers were passed by the pool and aperol sprits cocktails flowed from the bar with a breathtaking view of the valley.

The five course dinner was set a midst the vineyards on an old fire road in the heart of the property, with sweeping views of the vines and the valley below. As the sun set while guests enjoyed their meal, bistro lights, hung above the tables began to sparkle. Alison Events, who designed the event added eclectic bowls of nuts and seasonal fruits to the table. Natalie Bowen Designs produced fall inspired floral with local blooms in rich earthy tones and brass vessels. A fabulous Fete designed the water colored inspired menus that tied-in to the invitation suite and thank you notes.

The night continued in the properties working barn, where there were late night snacks, sweets, coffee and tea served by Sage Catering. We also hired The Buss Booth, a photo booth that is in the back seat of a mint condition vintage VW buss. The Water Cottage provided luxury portable restrooms and they were dressed up with candles and floral from Natalie Bowen Designs. As the property had a hard stop fro sound at 10:00pm, at 9:45pm we handed out headsets to all the guests and continued the party late into the night with a silent disco. Guests enjoyed outdoor lounge areas in the heat of the fall night.

It was great working with Ashley and Nick to plan their wedding because they were so creative and had so many fun ideas. I also love working at new venues and trying to figure out the best ways to utilize the space and make it feel authentic and not overly produced. I think you can see from the beautiful photographs by wedding photographer Sally Pinera, we accomplished just that.

See What Beauty Products Style Me Pretty Editors Splurge On

If you’re anything like us, your beauty bag is a mix of tried and true items. From drugstore buys to top-notch splurges. We all know the splurges are a bit harder to unbutton the wallet for, but if they work magic, we’ll keep coming back for more. Today, we’re letting you in on where we spend big beauty bucks—and why these goods are worth every penny.

Gabrielle

Tom Ford Lip Color in True Coral – If I were to have a “signature” beauty look, it would be a bold lip. Tom Ford’s Lip Colors are lush, creamy and come in the most beautiful colors, like this bright coral—the perfect hue for spring (if it ever comes).

Chanel Rouge Coco Stylo in Lettre – Yes, another lip product (seriously, I feel naked without a bit of color on my pout). I’ve always been a fan of the Rouge Coco, but lately, I’m loving Chanel’s new Rouge Coco Stylo, which combines the intensity of a lipstick, the shine of a gloss and the benefits of a balm in the signature creamy, lightweight formula.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo – I’ve tried almost every dry shampoo out there, and this is the best ever—I’m talking life-changing good. This miracle in a bottle doesn’t just absorb oil, it removes dirt, grease and sweat from your hair, thanks to technology developed by scientists at MIT.

[dotted]

Michelle

ARCONA ‘Brightening Grommage’ Exfoliator – I’ll be the first to admit that yes it’s kind of insane to spend $50 on an exfoliator, but this stuff is seriously the bees knees. On days that I use it I instantly notice that my skin is brighter, smoother, and doesn’t need a stitch of makeup!

ORIBE Signature Moisture Masque – I’m constantly putting my head of hair through the wringer and this moisturizing mask is a lifesaver. It completely erases the torture I’ve subjected my strands to (hello back to back heat exposure) and revives straw like ends instantly.

La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream – Having super sensitive skin isn’t ideal, but this cream completely saves me and I see this more as of an investment than a splurge.

[dotted]

Melissa

Patchology Eye Gels – I just started using these and they are my new favorite way to liven up my under-eye area! I pop them on for five minutes those mornings I’m feeling a little extra puffy.

Chanel Healthy Glow Bronzer – Hands down, best. bronzer. ever. Gives me just the right amount of glow I want all year round. I even skip blush most days because I love the natural look this gives me! Plus, it smells amazing too.

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick – Love. love. love. I’ve used the BB shimmer brick for years now and it’s perfect for adding a little extra shimmer on my cheeks, nose and I even use it as a simple shimmer eye shadow.

[dotted]

Elizabeth

Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder – I just recently tried this bronzer, and as someone with super fair skin, I’m in love. Most bronzers just make me look orange or sickly, but on those days when I need a little extra glow (aka November – April) this bronzer is my go-to.

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Corrector – The same time I learned about Bobbi Brown’s Bronzing Powder, I was introduced to this undereye concealer and I’m hooked. It’s super smooth, soothing, and makes me look like I’ve actually slept. My eyes are brighter, clearer – it’s my lifesaver.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Liner – The classic cat eye will forever be my favorite look and believe me, I’ve tried a lot of liners. But this UK brand is hands down my favorite. The perfect size to hold in your hand, it makes drawing that desired line so easy. The only bad part – it can be hard to find!

[dotted]

Stephanie

Clinique 3 Step Skin Care – When it comes to caring for my skin, I don’t mess around. I adore Clinique’s 3 Step product line, and love how it can be easily customized for your specific skin type from dry to oily and anywhere in between.

Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hairspray – In an effort to get that salon-style blowout at home, I tried out this B&B spray and have not been disappointed. Just spritz, grab a round brush, and expect volume and bounce for days.

Chanel Rouge Allure Lipstick – Because when it comes to pulling off a dramatic red lip, it’s a beauty buy worth splurging on. This lipstick gives me the perfect kind of color that can’t be ignored.

[dotted]

Erin

Too Faced Primed and Poreless Pure Primer – This primer has been life changing for my oh so sensitive skin. It leaves it velvety smooth and gives my makeup a matte finish all day long without even a hint of irritation.

Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss – I’m a total lip gloss junky and this stuff is liquid gold. Not even the least bit sticky, it moisturizes and comes in loads of barely there in the prettiest way shades.

Diorskin Nude Concealer – Ever since entering my 30’s and having twins, my underye circles are the deepest shade of tired. This concealer totally does the trick and makes it look like I’ve had the most restful night of sleep even if it’s all a pretty little lie.

Which Engagement Ring Style Is The Perfect Match To Your Zodiac Sign?

Classic NYC Bowery Hotel Wedding

I’ve been dying to take a weekend trip to NYC for the past couple months, and this wedding is officially pushing my urban wanderlust over the edge. Photographed by our dear friends at Christian Oth Studio with florals by Poppies & Posies, think a modern take on old world glamour with a candlelit reception that would make any guest feel thoroughly spoiled. Hopple Popple planned, Generation Events made certain the entertainment was on point, and you can keep the party going with a trip to The Vault.

From The Bride…Mike and I met 6 years ago in New York, between Christmas and New Years. The City has always been very special to both of us and it seemed natural to have our wedding there, despite currently living in Boston.

The hardest part of the planning process was honestly just figuring out where to start. Since we were making most people travel we knew we wanted to put together a full weekend schedule and I had some general ideas about look and feel: an informal ceremony performed by a close friend, a simple and elegant room design, and lots of time with family and friends. Most importantly, we wanted the entire weekend to feel like a big celebration so it had to be fun!

Fortunately, our first decision ended up being our best: choosing to work with Linda, Aya and Julie and the Hopple Popple team here in Boston to plan the event. They were terrific to work with and introduced us to a fantastic group of vendors who really brought the whole weekend together: Robin Popelsky at The Bowery (and later The Standard), Poppies and Posies for flowers and design, Jason Fioto at Generation Events for music/DJ, and Glen Allsop at Christian Oth for photography. We connected right away with Glen and I think it really shows in the photos. He was incredible!

Tour the Glamorous Headquarters of Jouer Cosmetics

I was first introduced to Jouer Cosmetics by my bridal makeup artist. She handed me the most perfect shade of barely there lip gloss and I’ve been a goner ever since. And when I spotted Jouer’s HQ it was exactly as I would imagine – gorgeous and blushing pink. Great makeup and a killer sense of style are only the tip of the fabulous iceberg for founder and creative director Christina Zilber. Have a peek at where the magic happens all photographed by Rebecca Yale.

Tell us about the Jouer brand

Jouer is all about enhancing what you find beautiful about yourself. It’s about empowering women to feel like the best version of themselves.

What sets Jouer apart from its competitors?

Hands down, Jouer’s skincare based formulas and effortless colors set the brand apart. I’m a stickler for sophisticated, good-for-your skin ingredients and I make sure that every product Jouer creates is a problem-solver.

Take the the Luminizing and Matte Moisture Tints, for example. They are our best sellers because they deliver beautiful coverage with nourishing and soothing ingredients. Every product in the line is designed and developed with high-quality ingredients to not only give you the coverage and color you desire, but also promote a healthy complexion.

How would you describe the Jouer girl?

The Jouer girl is generally busy (aren’t we all?!), and she needs her makeup to multitask. We have products for every skin tone and type. Whether you’re looking for sheer washes of color or full coverage, Jouer’s high-performance, skin care based makeup suites everyone.

Why did you decide to start Jouer?

As a model, I use to sit in the hair and makeup chair and take notes on everything the makeup artist used on me. Once, an artist put together a palette of lipsticks she had used on set, and I was thrilled. I took it the next step and started hand filling empty palettes with solid foundations, concealers, cream blushes, etc. I loved the idea of makeup on the go, but found palettes on the market limiting. I started to obsess over the idea of customized palettes and the idea of Jouer was born.

What’s been your favorite part about starting and running the company?

Starting and running a company certainly has its challenges, but it is also incredibly rewarding. My favorite part of the job is the creative process! I love developing shades, new formulas, and products that will help women in a meaningful way.

Recently, with the ever-evolving world of social media, I’m now able to connect directly with customers and fans and that’s been incredible. I love engaging with our followers and consider them a part of the Jouer community.

How does the studio design reflect the brand?

We refer to the studio space as our Beauty Bungalows because the vibe is “professional homey.” It’s approachable and warm like a home, yet designed to be a practical working space. The décor is a reflection of the brand; clean, feminine and classic, yet modern. Some highlights of the studio are our iconic black and white photographs, our ridiculously fun beauty closet of Jouer products, and our candy jars filled with pink candy.

What are your favorite Can’t-Live-Without products?

1. Concealer is by far is my “Can’t-Live-Without” product. I love concealer and carry it with me daily because I NEED it. All of Jouer concealers have superior coverage plus skincare ingredients. Whether you’re battling dark circles, discoloration, blemishes (or all of the above!) Jouer’s got ingredients to treat your concerns while covering.

2. I also Can’t-Live-Without Jouer’s Anti-Blemish Treatment Primer and both Luminizing and Matte Moisture Tint. I blend the two to even out my skin tone and make sure it lasts all day. I believe it all starts with good skin, so I make sure my foundation mix is just right.

3. More recently, I discovered long-wearing liquid lipsticks and have become OBSESSED. It’s changed my makeup-game. I was on the hunt for a shimmer liquid lipstick that was moisturizing and would stay put all day. I couldn’t find one, so I decided to develop one myself. And I’m most excited to share, we’re debuting our new Long-Wear Lip Cremes, packed with Vitamin E, this Spring. It’s the first true shimmer liquid lipstick on the market!

What inspires you?

What doesn’t inspire me?! I’m inspired nearly everywhere I go and everywhere I look. I find myself being inspired by anything from a beauty spread on a blog to a recent business article or the latest YouTube video. I’m constantly tearing images out of magazines, snapping screen shots of design ideas, pulling color inspirations and forwarding them to my team.

Above all, what truly inspires me the most are my children. They never cease to amaze me. They’ve become so independent and, yet, still like to hang out with their Mom. My daughter and I recently launched a YouTube Channel together –Jouer Girls- focusing on beauty. It’s been so much fun and a great way to spend quality time working on something we both love.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I ever received is “Don’t take no for an answer.” I tell this to my kids and those I work with. A “No” means, maybe. With persistence, determination and resourcefulness, tout est possible!

What are 5 items every woman should have in her makeup bag?

1. Concealer – I’m a concealer junkie and let’s face it, we’ve all got something to cover.
2. Sunscreen – I don’t leave home without it.
3. Lip Gloss- I think at any given time I have five different lip glosses with me; in my bag, in my car; in my work tote.
4. Matte Bronzer- I’m a believer in double-duty products, so when in a pinch the right shade of matte bronzer can double up as face powder, or even as an eye shadow or contour.
5. Long-Wear Lipstick – Though I love a good gloss, when it comes to all day wear, I opt for a long-wear liquid lipstick. It can take you from day to night with no additional application needed.

What’s your best piece of beauty advice?

Find what you love about yourself, and enhance it. I believe in embracing individual beauty. I’m raising a teenaged daughter and I see how hard she is on herself. I want her to embrace her individual beauty and spend more time looking out into the world than looking in the mirror. There’s no doubt in my mind that beauty IS as beauty DOES, so I tell her true beauty comes from helping others.

What do you think will be big makeup trends in 2016?

Highlighters will continue to be strong in 2016. Highlighters give your skin a beautiful “lit from within” glow, but you can also use them to sculpt and lift. Jouer has a few different highlighters in the line – beautiful creams, luminizing liquids and brightening powders. Because there are so many benefits to the right highlight, I’m in the process of developing something new for our highlighter category. Stay tuned this summer!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! I wish I had started earlier, but c’est la vie. Wear sunscreen everyday! I’ve made sure my two main face products (Luminizing Moisture Tint and Matte Moisture Tint, which I wear everyday) contain SPF, the key ingredient to keeping your skin youthful. (That, and staying hydrated and getting your beauty sleep.)

What’s your secret to success?

The secret is to never give up, stay creative and think outside the box. Keep working towards what you want…And, remember, don’t take NO for an answer.

How do you relax after a long day?

With owning my own business and being a single mom to two teenagers, it’s difficult for me to ever really turn it off and relax. I try to do yoga three times a week to unplug. I also love cooking classes or a hike with my girlfriends.

What’s your favorite item in the studio?

Although my guilty-pleasure self would say the pink candy jars, I’d really have to say our product development beauty closet. I’m a product junky! I love testing formulas, swatching shades and planning out the upcoming seasonal launches.

What inspired the studio design? Why did you make the design choices you did?

I wanted the Jouer bungalows to be the ideal space for creating beautiful products! For me, that meant they had to be filled with light, warm and inviting, and possess an energy that fosters creativity.

What’s your life motto?

Plain and simple, I believe in the Golden Rule….And on a bad day, there’s always lipstick.

Coral + Red DIY Central Wisconsin Barn Wedding

This wedding right here is all about those sweeter than sweet details. Handwritten vows? Check. Collected wooden chairs for the ceremony? Check. Handmade barn tables a la the Bride’s Father? Check. DIY BBQ inspired favors? Check. I could go on and on for days, but thanks to Maison Meredith Photography you can choose your favorite DIY detail to share via The Vault!

From the Bride… Long before boys and boyfriends were something I was even interested in, I remember my dad saying how he pictured me getting married here — at home — someday. Years later, when we got engaged, it all still looked the same. Still the same old barn where I had swung from a rope down to the trampoline below as a kid, filled with hay as high as the ceiling, and bursting at the seams with my dad’s “toys.” But, man oh man that was ALL about to change. From the moment Kervin and I said “YES” to having our wedding at my parents’ home, our community of friends and family worked incessantly to make our day a reality! Our day truly would not have been possible without the help of our friends, family, and neighbors. From removing all the hay (that was so old it was no longer in barrels, I wouldn’t wish that on anyone!), cementing the floor, rebuilding an entire corner of the barn foundation + creating a custom built-in bar in another corner, to rewiring the electricity (there was only one light in the whole barn) someone was always there to lend a hand. My mom spent weeks with a local garden shop owner discussing how to redo her garden beds and planning where and which types of flowers would be best for our fall wedding. This, of course, was all just the beginning.

I loved so many things about our day that I couldn’t pick just one, but the most special were the personalized touches. My mom collected all different wooden chairs from garage sales, craigslist, neighbors, and friends for seating at the ceremony and reception. I really wanted wooden barn tables to complete that “rustic” look, however I knew it just wasn’t economical for the amount of people we wanted to seat, so my dad offered to build them ALL. For dessert we had a cake, but we also asked close friends and family to make our most favorite treats. To go along with our BBQ theme, our favors were dry rubs my uncle made from veggies from his own garden. My maid of honor designed all of our table numbers. My parents found an old surrey at an auction and reupholstered it for us. My mom’s dear friend, a retired florist, did all of the gorgeous floral arrangements. My veil was handmade by a family member. I could go on and on for pages about all of the things that made our day SO special to us.

Writing our own vows was possibly one the hardest things, but was so, SO meaningful to us, and of course, in true fashion to where I grew up, two trains came by whistling loudly during our ceremony (I’ll take it as their token of celebration)!

My advice to future brides is be intentional in planning your wedding details, but know that not everything will go as planned, and that is OK! Your wedding day will be still be absolutely unforgettable, and you are probably the only one will even notice.

Our wedding day was magical in every way, and we feel so blessed to be surrounded by such an amazing community of people!

From The Bride…Tell us about you and your groom – how you met and the details. How did he propose?

Adrian and I first met at Acadia University, it was in our first Economics class together where we set eyes on each other for the first time. He somehow managed to get my email from a friend of a friend, and the rest was history. From the moment the two of us connected the chemistry was undeniable, often staying up well beyond our bed times, before big tests and important football games, we couldn’t get enough. Everyone around us saw it, we certainly felt it and no matter how many times we tried to deny it, it was there. We tried to be friends at first, which gave us a solid foundation of mutual respect and love for each other. There is no doubt in my mind that Adrian is my best friend. So when he took me to Disney World to ask me to be his “happily ever after” at the happiest place on earth, I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. With a crown on my head and all, we walked around the Magic Kingdom hand in hand, like a princess and her prince.

What was your inspiration behind your overall wedding decor and colour choices?

Our favorite things to do together always include being in the great outdoors, we wanted our wedding to reflect who we were as a couple. Our wedding decor came straight from our favorite places, whether it was kayaking out to the seagull stomping grounds to collect our seashell place settings or boating over to local islands to collect driftwood for our signage and wedding arch. Most of our decor came straight from the backyard of our venue. I have always loved nature, when I was a young girl my friends always called me “Au Natural”, so this made our color choices easy. I was the White, Adrian was the Black, the gardens were the green and the rest were earth tones. There was no question our venue would be on the ocean and our decor would have sea side elements. Lucky for me our dream venue just happened to be Adrian’s Family Home, his parents played a big role in creating many of our decor projects. Some of my favorite wedding planning moments were spent foraging in his mother’s garden and the local islands on our weekends leading up to our big day. All of the memories we made while making the decor pieces ourselves made seeing them in action on our big day that much more meaningful.

Any personal meaning in the details you’d like to share?

When I was a little girl my grandfather would always ring an old antique bell at our family cottage before dinner. He would lift me up on to his shoulders to ring the bell. As I continued to grow and he couldn’t lift me anymore, the two of us would ring the bell together, it was one of my favorite things to do at the cottage. I was beyond excited that my grandfather and grandmother were able to be present on our wedding day and I wanted them both to play a role in our special day. My grandmother was to “bless” the rings and my grandfather was to ring that very bell for our first dinner as husband and wife. It was the perfect way to call all of our closest family and friends to dinner to celebrate the beginning of our new lives together. That very night at the stroke of midnight my grandfather and grandmother celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with us on the dance floor, we were so fortunate to share such a special occasion with them.

What was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

At the end of the night, after the most incredible day and fireworks display we had ever seen we found each other on the dance floor. It was like no one else was even around, it felt like it was just the two of us. I have never seen Adrian move the way he did on the dance floor that night, nor do I think I ever will again, there was this energy surrounding us like no other. The smiles on our faces told the story, we were at the end of the best day of our lives, surrounded by all of our most cherished family & friends. I felt like Cinderella as the end of our night was fast approaching, and it was a night we never wanted to end, the two of us danced the night away as if no one was watching. They don’t lie when they tell you your Wedding Day is the best day of your life, what a day it was!

Artistic Baltimore Wedding Surrounded by Spring Blossoms

There’s a whole lot of pretty in this wedding from Lindsay Hite / READYLUCK, but let’s start with the ketubah, a work of art created by the beautiful Bride (the crazy-talented artist behind The Painted Ketubah). Then there’s the pretty pink petals everywhere, making for the most gorgeous portraits. And, trust me, there’s so much more pretty to love (like the Bride’s Rosa Clara gown from Lovely Bride)  in The Vault.

From The Bride…We really wanted our wedding to be filled with dancing, laughter and creativity. We were both so floored by the beauty of the Peabody Library and grateful that we could be in Baltimore while all of the trees and flowers were in full spring bloom.

I’m a painter, and about two years ago I started my own ketubah studio, The Painted Ketubah, where I create hand painted wedding certificates and illuminated marriage contracts. Since I spend my days working with brides and grooms I felt like I had so much helpful experience to draw on as Colin and I planned our own wedding. Painting our ketubah in the weeks leading up to our wedding felt like a perfect way to meditate on the commitment that we were making to one another.

It was really so special to work with Colin to integrate our vows into a piece of artwork that will hang in our home forever. The ketubah signing ceremony was also one of the most emotional parts of our wedding day, we were surrounded by an intimate group of family and friends while my mother played us a song on her guitar that she wrote for my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary.

Some of the most meaningful parts of our wedding were in the personal details that celebrated our families’ roots and traditions. Colin built our chuppah with his dad using my grandfather’s prayer shawl. My mom, having been raised Kentucky, distilled two small batches of bourbon for us to serve at our reception. Colin’s mom and my great Aunt baked some of our favorite family recipes to give to our guests in their welcome bags and during our send-off brunch. I carried my great-grandmother’s pearl clutch and wore my grandmother’s gold bracelets while Colin wore his grandfather’s antique tie pin.

When Colin and I started our relationship we were running a startup art gallery in San Francisco that doubled as a live/work space. Some of our favorite memories together are the adventures that went into curating and assembling those art shows and community events so we wanted our wedding to be infused with a similar creative ethos. It was in that spirit that we decided to make the painted circular table runners with indigo dye and watercolor paints to add some handmade touches to each of the tables at our reception. I also painted the design for our invitations and rsvp cards while Colin geeked out on making our wedding website and working with our DJ’s, friends of his from college, to craft the perfect playlist.

Rustic Chic Pastel Yorkshire Country Wedding

You know what we love most about this wedding (that is, other than love between these two)? The fact that Sarah and Adam’s venue was none other than the Groom’s parents garden. I mean, how amazing is that?! An immaculate curation of beautiful blooming flowers, these two celebrated their beginning in the sweetest way possible and thanks to Samantha Ward Photography we’ve got it all in The Vault!

Rustic

From Samantha Ward PhotographySarah & Adam’s wedding was on a glorious summers day, the kind of summers day in England which you can hope for but definitely not expect. This was perfect as Sarah & Adam had chosen a country garden reception which wouldn’t have been so accommodating with summer showers.

The day was filled with laughter, family, friends and especially love. From the formal, yet personal ceremony in the beautiful church at Pickering to the informal, beautiful reception in Adam’s parents garden. The traditional canvas and pole marquee looked stunning and I was blown away by the styling inside, so simple yet so effective.

There were so many elements of this wedding which were delightful, the mismatched bridesmaid dresses in tones of pinks, Sarah’s stunning gown and Adam’s stylish suit, the bridesmaids walking the short distance to church whilst trying to stop the confetti flying away, the garden fete games on the lawn, the festooned lighting through the trees (which looked so magical at dusk) the long trestle tables in the marquee (harking back to tradition), the sharing platters of food and the overall relaxed atmosphere of fun and love.

Sarah and Adam had created a day with beautiful details, wonderful food, drinks and entertainment. They had thought of their guests at every point and yet hadn’t lost the importance of their union, their marriage and their love for each other.

From the Bride… Adam & I were married in Adam’s home town of Pickering in North Yorkshire on July 25th 2016. The ceremony was held in Pickering Church, the church which Adam grew up around (and was altar boy at when he was a young chap). It is an absolutely stunning old church with beautiful medieval paintings along the internal walls. We had two readings in the church; the first was Romans 12 9-18 read by two of Adam’s university friends Dan and Nige; the second a poem by Bee Rawlinson “I Take You” which was specially selected and read by two of my close school friends Ania and Andrea.

We were extremely fortunate that Adam’s parents allowed us to have the reception in their gorgeous English country garden. The garden is immaculately cared for by Adam’s dad who put in a huge amount of work in months leading up to the wedding to ensure that there were beautiful flowers blooming in July. We hired an incredible marquee from Will’s Marquees which really was something else!

We wanted an English country garden look to our wedding. We chose very natural colours such as blush pinks and greens. Whilst we didn’t want everything to ‘match’ we wanted all the aspects to complement each other and fit in with the look, something that we tried to achieve all the way through the wedding, from the initial ‘Save the dates’ to the table decorations. The decoration of the garden really bought everything together; Rachel at Simply Vintage was so much fun and really understood what we were looking for. She had so many brilliant ideas which I would never have thought of; from the foliage around the poles in the marquee, the festoon lights in the orchard and the fire pits for the evening. Rachel arrived the day before the wedding in her truck of wonders which had so many props to play with. Lynne (from Stem Designs) worked alongside Rachel which meant that the theme was consistent across all parts of the decoration. Whilst we had initial discussions of some of my favourite flower choices, I gave her a relatively free rein as to the end result. I was like a child in a sweetie shop when she turned up with more peonies that I’d ever seen. The bouquets were just lovely; I went for a natural trailing style whilst the bridesmaids had more traditional bunches. We had long tables for the reception so instead of centrepieces we had flowers and foliage in small vintage bottles and jars dotted around the tables. We had additional flowers dotted around the garden and hanging from the trees.

I had six bridesmaids and wanted them to be in different but similar dresses. I asked them all to find a blush pinky knee length dress with a vintage / garden feel. Allowing them all to pick their own dresses not only meant that they ended up with dresses that they liked but removed the stress of trying to find a dress style which suited everybody’s shape. I bought them all individual vintage earrings which I selected over the course of the year leading up to the wedding.

After the evening meal we had the White Keys play. It took a while to find a band that we liked, so we were delighted when we found that the White Keys were available to play and happy to travel up to Yorkshire from London. We went to one of their gigs before the wedding and I knew that they would be just perfect; upbeat, fantastic singers AND performers who got everybody dancing. I am so glad that we were able to have such an incredible band. It made a huge difference to the evening and the dance floor was constantly packed.

Finding a photographer was one of the hardest parts of planning the wedding. It was very important to me to not only have a photographer who took amazing photos, but somebody who would also be lovely to be around on the day of the wedding. We had a Skype meeting with Sam before booking and Adam and I instantly felt comfortable with her. She is so lovely and easy to talk to. Her photos of the day are so beautiful and she has managed to capture so many special moments without me even noticing she was there.

My overall best piece of advice for future brides & grooms is to work with suppliers that are nice, fun people who you trust…… and enjoy it. We would not have been able to achieve our perfect day without our wonderful friends and family who were happy to get involved; including my mum drying rose petals for six months, collecting endless jam jars and being there for constant guidance, my bridesmaids cutting, glueing and sticking invites for 180 people, Adam’s dad working tirelessly on the garden, Adam’s brother fixing a last minute electrical crisis and the whole wedding party helping out a huge amount before and on the day. To everybody that helped, Adam and I will be forever grateful. I loved planning our wedding and would not have changed anything about it.

Classic Southern Fall Wedding at Oak Hill at Berry College

Elizabeth and William’s wedding is the perfect proof that you don’t necessarily have to pack up and peruse to find a venue that’s right for you. For it was the nearby Oak Hill at Berry College that completely stole their hearts and it’s easy to see why. A dreamy day captured by the ridiculously talented Sawyer Baird, this is one celebration you’ll want to bookmark ASAP. See it all in The Vault!

From the Bride… We have always dreamed of having a southern wedding little did we know the perfect venue would not be far from home. I had searched all over our home state of Georgia looking for the perfect venue and once I stepped foot on the grounds of Oak Hill I knew it was the perfect place. I had heard how beautiful Berry College was but I didn’t know truly how beautiful it was until I saw it first hand. Once I walked into the picturesque gardens full of roses paired with a beautiful Antebellum home I began to imagine my dreams coming true.

Oak Hill at Berry College offered everything we could ever imagine. I started planning our wedding with a classic and romantic vision, which incorporated the gardens surrounding the property. I envisioned the classic colors of burgundy, ivory, blush and navy fitting the fall scenery perfectly. We knew the décor would not be complete without incorporating my family’s silver throughout the reception. We held true to our southern roots with a menu that featured shrimp and grits, chicken, mashed potatoes and biscuits. Our wedding planner Holly from the Season Events did a wonderful job bringing our vision to life.

We could not have had a more perfect fall day. The week leading up to the wedding was so peaceful and stress free. We could not have had the wedding we did without all of our amazing vendors. We are so thankful for all of our family and friends that came to celebrate with us. Our wedding day was truly magical and one that we will cherish forever.
