How One Couple’s Compromise Led to the Most Gorgeous Ranch Wedding

What do you do when the Groom wants a small, rustic wedding and the Bride dreams of a formal affair, big band and all? Compromise. And in the case of this duo, that compromise led to a Holman Ranch wedding more beautiful than either of them could have originally imagined. From the Seascape Flowers‘ arrangements to the Bride’s Oscar De La Renta gown, this wedding is proof that compromises can lead to great things. See all the pretty from Erin Hearts Court in The Vault!

From The Bride…My husband I had completely different visions for our wedding. He wanted an outdoor affair that was small, casual, rustic, and in a remote location. He would joke that he wanted to get married somewhere that our guests would have to hike to! I wanted something more formal, with a seated dinner, big band, and guests in long dresses and tuxes. Zero chance I was going to hike anywhere! We were able to find a great compromise with Holman Ranch. As soon as we arrived at the venue for a tour, my husband insisted that we get married there. It turned out to be the perfect place to create the “classy casual” wedding which embodied both of our styles.

I chose a neutral color palette for the bridesmaid dresses and flowers in order to complement the stucco and stone buildings on the property. Laurie from Seascape Flowers far exceeded my expectations. The bridal party bouquets were adorned with hand-dyed silk ribbons in champagne and white. We kept the flowers simple for the ceremony, with ivory petals down the aisle and hobnob jars filled with a simple mix on the chairs. For cocktail hour, Laurie decorated a large plant stand with olive branches and our caterer filled it full with champagne flutes. For the reception, we used a combination of vessels and tied the look together with gold lanterns and a sprig of olive at each place setting.

In the end, the biggest compliment that we received was that the wedding was “so us.” Perhaps I let my husband get his way too much – after all, I did agree to Coors Light as the “groom’s drink”! However, my hope is that the following DIY / personal touches had something to do with it.
• Invitations: We splurged on letterpress for the invitation and RSVP cards, but created our own stamp for the return address labels. We also added a casual touch by hand-tying gold twine I purchased on Etsy around each invitation suite.
• Tribute to groom’s father: My husband wore cufflinks with his late father’s name on them. In addition, on our ceremony program, we included a poem his father wrote to his mother while they were dating.
• Handwritten notes to guests: We penned a note to each guest thanking them for attending and used small clothespins to attach them to a rod iron railing adorned with olive leaves. These notes also doubled as a way to tell our guests which tables they were sitting at.
• Guestbook: We love animals and therefore we had our guests sign a large ceramic pig. It now sits on top of our china cabinet and is a great reminder of our day.
• Dessert and Aperitifs: Instead of a traditional cake, we opted for an ice cream truck featuring custom flavors. In addition, we created our own “scotch and cigar bar” which turned out to be a real hit. I was able to purchase old cigar boxes to display the scotch bottles (one from each region in Scotland) and wrote the names of each on a small chalkboard.

Head Back to Summer Camp with this Rustic Texas Wedding

This Texas wedding is making me long for summer. With a bright color scheme and exuberant details, Brandi Hines Events + Design created a wedding with the same joy and happiness as a great day at summer camp (the fun Silvercloud Events Co. didn’t hurt either!). Experience all the fun for yourself, thanks to Anne Marie Photography and The Bird And The Bear, in The Vault!

From The Bride…Looking back on our wedding day it’s hard to pick a word to describe the day other than joy. We both felt so much joy that the day had FINALLY come after dating for just shy of six years. We both had never-ending smiles all day, truly enjoying our time with all of our friends and family.

Jon and I met our freshman year at Texas A&M University while we were out dancing with friends. We dated all throughout college, so our wedding was a huge reunion for our wedding party and guests, many of home had known each other since we met. Being true Aggies, we played the Aggie War Hymn during our reception and even sang a cappella when the DJ’s music stopped mid-song by accident. Jon proposed while we were on a camping trip in Colorado, so having our ceremony and reception outside somewhere beautiful just made sense to us. Once we saw Camp Comfort we knew that we had found our venue.

The venue…Camp Comfort is a bed and breakfast is located in Comfort, Texas (how cute of a name is that?) nestled in the Hill Country and the perfect mix of rustic, modern, and eclectic. Having our wedding at a B&B also meant that we could stay there with our wedding party both the night before and night of the wedding, which really added to the fun of the weekend. Our time hanging out around the fire pit with our groomsmen and bridesmaids after our rehearsal dinner was one of our favorite memories from the weekend.

The location…We’re both Texans, born and raised, so we loved getting married in a tiny Texas town. Most of our family members arrived in Comfort on Friday for an all-ladies bridal luncheon hosted by my aunts (a tradition in my family). We had our rehearsal dinner at a pizza place just down the street from the venue called Comfort Pizza. Everything is within walking distance in Comfort, so the weekend was laid back and all about spending time with our friends and family who had come in from all over the state. One of our favorite parts about having our wedding in Comfort was the drive out from Austin. We knew that drive would be beautiful for our guests.

The photography…Traci and Kellie at Anne Marie Photography were exactly our style! It was incredible to see how well their photos caught the light and colors of the day. It helped that both of them attended Jon and I’s alma mater, Texas A&M, and were the sweetest people all day. We felt right at home with them and could not have loved our photographers more! Jon and I decided pretty late in the planning process to use a videographer as well. Luckily Bryan with The Bird and The Bear was still available for our wedding date. We LOVED how the wedding video turned out and will always recommend budgeting for a videographer to other couples getting married. Bryan captured the emotions of the day in a way that we couldn’t have imagined.

The details…After we met Brandi with Brandi Hines Events + Design, our wedding coordinator, we knew that her style would be perfect for the day that we were envisioning. She was amazing! We knew that we wanted the feel to be colorful, eclectic, and not too formal. She pulled it off perfectly. We thought through so many small details for the wedding to make everything feel like us. The invitations were letter pressed by Studio 3 Press. Jon and my brother built our wedding backdrop themselves a month before the wedding after I found the perfect macramé hanging. We chose songs for the night by artists that we have seen together live in Austin including Iron and Wine, Of Monsters and Men, and Death Cab for Cutie. Jon and I wrote our own vows and had our guests say “we do” when our pastor asked if they would encourage us in our marriage. We had Bibles passed down from both sides of my family at the small table where Jon and I had our first communion as husband and wife. Our exit included sparklers and riding bicycles down the street and back.

The food…The dessert table was one of my favorite things at the wedding! My mom hunted for vintage cake stands and even had a cake stand custom made with our names and wedding date. The bridal cake from Cynthia at Cakes and More Bakeshop was unique and covered with colorful succulents and flowers. We went with our gut (literally) and chose flavors that we have loved forever, alternating layers of confetti with strawberry cream and strawberry with cream cheese frosting. The groom’s cake was a simple spice cake with cream cheese frosting and greenery lining the bottom. My mom also made her famous chocolate chip cookies and Jon’s aunt made
delicious bite-sized apple pastries.

Cocktail hour and reception…We wanted people to mingle and let loose during the cocktail hour, so we placed a table with chips, queso, salsa, and guacamole in the Social Hall. Meanwhile, the bar was outside near the dance floor and photo booth by Airstream Photo Booth, which kept people up taking photos and dancing. We decided not to do table settings for the reception to keep the feel informal and encourage mingling among our guests. Jon and I wanted to keep things simple with the menu, so offered a mix of heavy appetizers including South Texas cheese steak egg rolls, stuffed mushrooms, mini chalupas, and cilantro chicken empanadas from Anne Marie’s Catering. Our drink options were local craft beer from Austin, margaritas, and sangria. Our head table was under an open wooden structure with lights strung up everywhere. It felt so romantic and fun!

Flowers…I worked at a flower shop in high school, so the flowers were important to me. Brandi knocked it out of the park. I can’t even describe how much I LOVED my bouquet! It was one of my favorite things from the wedding. Brandi made the bouquet look wild, eclectic, and bohemian in a way that I could not have imagined…and it was HUGE! I loved it! The centerpieces were fun and whimsical with succulents, gold accents, and lots of greenery and color.

My look…I wore a Catherine Deane dress for the wedding and a white lace romper for our exit. Both were from BHLDN. My wedding dress was actually one that I found on Pinterest months before we were even engaged! It was the first one that I tried on and just felt like me. I loved the bohemian feel and all of the detail. I kept the rest of my look simple with a headpiece by Justin & Taylor and a veil by Debra Moreland. The only jewelry that I wore was a blue vintage cocktail ring that belonged to my great-grandmother and earrings that Jon gave me as a gift the day of the wedding. I loved how freeing it was to change into the romper and ride off on bicycles for our exit! The girls at Hey Lovely Makeup did the hair and makeup for myself and all of the bridesmaids. They were AMAZING! The bridesmaids all wore black dresses with lace detailing. I could not have been happier with how all of the dresses looked together; it looked like they were curated just for the wedding. We heard from our guests that our wedding was so “us”. You can’t get a better compliment than that! We are still in awe of the love that we felt from our family and friends on our wedding day. It really was an incredible day!

Bright, Beachy Celebration in Brazil Part 2: Farewell Picnic

We’ve already perused the pretty that was Part 1 of this beachside celebration, and the day after picnic that followed? Unreal. A beautiful beach bash paired with floral filled drinks, poolside merriment, and of course a few hammocks for good measure. It’s time to escape the ordinary because Cassidy Carson has captured it all to share in The Vault!

From the Bride… The farewell picnic was casually decorated with flowers and fruits. It was a relaxing day by the pool and ocean for our guests to enjoy one last day together before going home.

Our wedding turned out to be one of most amazing experiences in our lives! We still can’t believe how fun and special it all was. We now know though, it all revolved around our amazing friends and family – and of course, the natural wonders of Brazil.

This Engagement Session Dress Needs To Be In Your Closet ASAP

What’s better than a sun-filled engagement? How about a sun-filled engagement complete with the the most beautiful blush gown we’ve ever laid eyes on. Yeah, that’ll do the trick. Because with Shannon Moffit behind the lens of this seriously adorable e-session, this is one gallery you’re going to want to bookmark and revisit time and time again. See it all in The Vault!

From Shannon MoffitI met Justine and Zach shortly after dawn at the entrance of Rock Springs Park, near Orlando, Florida. As we walked up, the park was empty; beautiful light poured through hanging moss on the trees and a light breeze danced with the leaves on the ground. We wandered down a wooden staircase that led to the natural spring to explore and dip our feet in the crystal blue water. It was quite the magical location and experience! Justine looked stunning in an open-back, blush dress and she held a gorgeously wild bouquet.

From the Bride-to-be…Zach and I are simple people. We love waking up early and enjoying our coffee. We love going for walks and staying home with our fur babies. We both hold relaxation in the highest regard. That being said, when it came time for our engagement photos, we wanted to do something a little out of our comfort zone! The Rock Springs Park was the perfect place for a new adventure! Zach and I don’t have a lot of opportunities to dress formally in our daily lives and we rarely take pictures together, so we were so excited for the opportunity to play dress-up (okay, okay, maybe I was the excited one).

Pulling off a Modern, Gender Neutral Nursery for Twins

This twin fantasy land designed by Amelia Canham Eaton is a modern space filled with bold touches (lucite and a striking black and white + gold palette just to name a few) making it a nursery to be envious of. And let me just tell you, planning space for double the cribs is no easy feat but this room makes it look gorgeous. Have a look at more of the space captured by Hallie Duesenberg in the VAULT.

My client and friend Abby was expecting identical twins, but not finding out the sex of the babies so the initial design concept was a bold, gender neutral, black and white nursery. At 30 weeks pregnant, just as we were having the room painted, Abby gave birth to two beautiful baby girls. The girls were healthy but had to spend a couple months in the NICU which gave me just enough time to prepare the nursery for their arrival home.

Even though I ended up knowing the room was intended for two sweet girls, we decided to stick to our initial black and white theme while adding a soft feather fixture as a subtle feminine touch. The illusion of a chair rail, created with just paint, and the bold black doors are some of my favorite features. The rug and marque letters feel whimsical, while the curtains and light fixture soften things making it the perfect place for Abby to bring her sweet baby girls home.

Bright, Beachy Celebration in Brazil Part 1: The Wedding

It’s official, Cassidy Carson can do no wrong. For this seaside celebration is not only a dose of tropical bliss, but it’s got the makings of an all time classic celebration. From the Bride’s beautifully detailed gown, to the regal reception that followed their ceremony, we’ve got it all waiting in The Vault! Oh, and if you think this is good, just wait until you see their farewell picnic – Part 2 coming right up!

From the Bride… I met Collis randomly almost 12 years ago, on a bus in Vancouver, where I was studying English through an exchange program.

When the course was over at the end of 2004, we were deeply in love, but our young age, university plans and different nationalities spoke louder and I had to go back to Brazil. However, 9 years later, fate and the stars would rock our worlds unexpectedly, when we were brought back together to never leave each other again.

In March 2014, Collis proposed to me in beautiful Lake Louise, Alberta. From there to here, many changes and a lot of courage took place, so our dreams could finally become a reality.

We currently live in Vancouver, but very shortly after the proposal, we both decided we wanted to get married in Brazil. I knew immediately that the hidden paradise of São Miguel dos Milagres, one of the most beautiful beaches in the northeast of the country, was the place to be. With nothing but untouched soft sand and warm water beaches, it was the perfect backdrop for our story.

What makes São Miguel so magical, is also what makes it a challenging place to have a wedding for 120 people. Besides the fact that we picked and organized everything from 11,000 kilometres away, we had to hire designers, a wedding planner and all professionals from another city, almost 200 kms distant. Not to mention that it was the very first time a wedding was hosted at the venue we picked.

I was not sure all the hundreds of emails exchanged and Skype meetings held late at night would be worth it all. At the end of the day it came down to planning, trusting a great team of professionals, and counting on my beloved family, who helped me in every single detail. It ended up being an unforgettable experience and more amazing than we could have ever imagined!

Our wedding was broken up into three separate events: a Luau the first night, the Wedding and reception, and finally a romantic farewell picnic.

The Luau was tropical themed with huge white flags and a bomb fire on the beach. Then live music, caipirinhas, and dancing on the pool deck. The party only stopped when we all jumped in the water with our clothes on.

The wedding happened the next afternoon in a magical church built in the 18th century. An orchestra played our favourite songs and the guests were welcomed with paper fans and lemon water to refresh. The ceremony was held by a charismatic young Priest, who added English insertions so our Canadian family and friends could follow along.

The Reception took place in the courtyard of Pousada do Toque, the boutique hotel we all stayed in that weekend. The garden on its own is already beautiful, so our idea was to simply bring a little more Brazilian flare to the party. It was decorated with rustic accents, paper lanterns and tropical local flowers. The long wooden tables brought us together and helped Canadians and Brazilians strike up fun conversations and warm up for the party to come. The moon was full, the live music was great, and the drinks were cold and endless. Our families and best friends all together under the stars. We sang, laughed and danced until very late on that magnificent night. “What a time to be alive”, I thought all night long. It was beautiful and unforgettable!

They Wed in the Same Church Her Parents Did 37 Years Earlier

Trust me when I say, it doesn’t get much more nautical (or prettier) than this New York wedding. From the ceremony at the same church where the Bride’s parents said “I do” to the yacht club reception, this navy and pink striped day is quintessential nautical. And with vendors Brklyn View PhotographyViolet And VerdeWeddington Way and Sweet Booths, it was an absolute dream. Get pinning now in The Vault!

From The Bride…Steve and I were married on a beautiful day in October, at the same church where my parents walked down the aisle more than 37 years before. Our ceremony set the tone for a day we envisioned as a timeless celebration that combined tradition with fun details that expressed our personalities.

A palette of navy blue and pink – accented with classic stripes – was brought to life through custom save the dates from Sincerely, Jackie, and carried throughout our attire and décor.

Keeping with our vision, I paired my Rosa Clara wedding dress with my mom’s veil and grandmother’s pearl necklace. Steve and his groomsmen wore grey suits and striped bow ties, while each bridesmaid chose her own navy Alfred Sung dress.

Our reception venue, Bridgeview Yacht Club, served as a beautiful waterfront setting for some of my favorite photos of the day captured by the incredibly talented Brklyn View Photography. The venue’s ballroom provided a classic backdrop for colorful, garden-inspired floral arrangements by Violet and Verde, which popped against the room’s navy and gold décor.

By choosing a venue that handled coordination and catering among many other things, we were able to focus more time and budget on personal details for our guests to enjoy – like a fun photo booth and favors, the groom’s favorite black and white cookies.

After an evening filled with toasts, food and dancing, the celebration came to a close with delicious donuts from a local bakery – a perfectly sweet ending to an even sweeter day!

A Garden Party Wedding We’d Die to Attend

Good gracious, this wedding. This garden set, floral-filled, impeccably styled wedding. It’s got some insanely talented vendors behind it, including Jose Villa, Bustle Events, Nicolette Camille, TEAM, and Paula LeDuc, but it’s also got a ton of heart. Read: the bride’s beaded reception gown was custom-made by her mom! Go snag a closer peek with a trip to The Vault.

From The Bride… I wanted to convey a sense of laid back luxury with a touch of rustic since we were dining under a 150-year sycamore tree trellis. Sas and I love rustic French decor. The rustic aspect came through with the patinated footed compotes with tumbling fruit, burnished votives, and a day of paper that was watercolor painted to match the dusty blush silk ribbons of my bouquet and corsage wristlets.

From Erin of Bustle Events… When I first met with Kaen and Sas to discuss the overall aesthetic they wanted for their Napa Valley wedding, Karen had mentioned her love for deep dramatic and moody colors. The wedding featured deep moody purples, dusty rose and muted grey blue with pops of gold. The ceremony took place in the garden with a semi-circle of potted plants and loose flowers created by the spectacular Nicolette Camille. Karen wore a Inbal Dror caped gown.

After the ceremony and cocktail hour Karen changed into a beautiful beaded dress her mom custom-made for her. The reception took place under the vine arbor. Guests found vintage bottles containing a single bloom and tied with their tables and names calligraphed on fabric. Each table was covered with textured grey linens, bowls of real fruit and lush centerpieces in gold footed containers. Guests place setting was adorn with a hand painted menu and a piece of quartz wrapped with gold wire.

The moody theme was carried out throughout the entire event. Paula Le Duc filled the guests bellies with the most amazing food and even used deep purple potatoes to keep in line with the food. The couple partied with their closest friends and family while dancing under the stars.

From The Bride…Growing up in Southern California I had always imagined having a wedding by the beach. There are many beautiful beach locations in California, but for Niko and myself, none were more appropriate than Pismo Beach. The scenic coastline, the oak studded hills, and the relaxed, small town vibe were all too perfect! It had been a favorite destination of ours during the course of our relationship and will now be an even more special place to return to for years to come.

The beautiful natural scenery of both our ceremony & reception venues made styling ideas much less overwhelming! To accentuate the already picturesque surroundings, we stuck with a more neutral color palette of grey, linen, and white with pops of peach and coral. The goal was to create a comfortable atmosphere that was elegant, whimsical and casual-chic. I wanted the event to feature a classic combination of vintage and beach without being overly thematic. One of the few beach elements that we incorporated was the sand dollar. In the early mornings, sand dollars wash up on the beaches of Pismo by the dozens!

A number of elements were handcrafted to bring warmth and personality to the space: DIY wood transfer images of our families and engagement photos, sand dollar embossed place cards and table numbers nestled into natural pieces of driftwood, and a DIY bar top made by my super talented hubby! The last of these was easily our favorite DIY detail because of the unexpected flair it brought to the event space.

My favorite memory of the day was sneaking away to the beach just before sunset. At that point in time there was no stress, no itinerary, just me and my husband enjoying the peaceful sights and sounds of the beach. Not to mention the stunning photos which were captured in those moments (thank you Dave)!! Although we’d frequented Pismo on several occasions during our relationship, the sunset was more brilliant that evening than I can ever remember it being before.

Niko works for a nursery, so let’s just say flowers were an important aspect for us! Our florist, Katie Noonan, has an impeccable quality of work and hiring her was hands down one of the easiest decisions of planning. Our floral palette included light and fluttery peonies, poppies, and garden roses with more textured blooms of ranunculus, scabiosa, and Queen Anne’s Lace. The arrangements were understated yet dreamy and we loved everything about them!

Our desert bar included three small cakes of white velvet cake covered in Italian meringue buttercream, three varieties of cupcakes, and our favorite – browned butter sea salt chocolate chip cookies for all the late night sweets lovers!

With the help of my mother and sister-in-law, our guests parted with homemade Rosemary Sea Salts – rosemary because of its symbolism as the herb of love and remembrance, and sea salt because of its natural tie to the beach and our love of cooking.

As for advice to future brides-to-be, I’d say you can never start too early in your planning! I’m a planner by nature, and even with lots of help and 15 months to put it all together, I can’t imagine doing it with any less time. Sources like Pinterest and Style Me Pretty are wonderful for certain, but dialing in your own style can take longer than you’d imagine! I’d spent months planning around one color scheme and didn’t realize until much later that it just wasn’t going to work with my venue. Don’t forget to hire a videographer. It’s a once in a lifetime event so I promise you won’t regret it. Also, go ahead a splurge on a month-of-coordinator. It’ll be worth every penny to help save your sanity leading up to wedding day!
