Sweet Smiles + DIY Details For This Rustic Barn Wedding

Having attended college in the Finger Lakes I’m one of the lucky ones who knows the secret of their beauty. But that cat is about to be let out of the bag with these pics by Alexandra Meseke; she captured this beautiful Bride looking her finest (thanks to Gabriella New York) and the super sweet nuptials of her and her new hubby. See it all in our Vault and join me in the Finger Lakes Fan Club right this way.

From the Bride… When Andy and I began planning our wedding, we imagined a day filled with love, laughter, music and dancing. From the moment we saw Suzanne Fine Regional Cuisine, we knew we had found the place for our celebration; Bob and the entire Suzanne staff were warm and inviting, the farmhouse and barns were beautiful, their flower and herb gardens were vibrant, and the pond out back with a view of Seneca Lake was simply stunning. The fact that their food is absolutely incredible truly set the venue over the top.

I worked on a number of DIY projects for the wedding, and also have a few people to thank for their help. My dad cut, sanded, and stained wood for me to paint with table numbers. My sister helped me prepare watercolor escort cards and also perfectly sewed the banner I made for Andy’s nephews to carry (as a surprise, she also sewed a beautiful handkerchief for my “something blue”!). I made a number of other signs as well and loved being hands on with creating each piece. We eventually brought in the Events Company to help tie the overall feel together. They provided rentals, such as linens, vintage chargers, chandeliers and lanterns, and coordinated our sparkler send off. They also created a fantastic lounge space in the barn with tufted ottomans and chairs, which was very important because we had dinner in a tent just outside the barn and used the barn as a giant dance floor. This lounge area was key in making sure all of our guests felt included in a long night of dancing. Alyssa of the Events Company was also our day-of coordinator, and she kept everything moving smoothly!

We were incredibly lucky with the weather on our wedding day – it was 80 degrees in late September in Upstate New York! The leaves had started changing and everything felt magical. I knew that I wanted to focus on the natural beauty of the property, so we decided to keep the ceremony site simple with a circle of white rose petals. One of my favorite moments was stepping into that circle of petals with Andy to exchange vows and be married by our dear friend Lucas, who blew us away with his heartfelt and personal speech. We are also both very connected to family, so it was important to us to involve family members in the ceremony. My parents walked me down the aisle, which began on a beautiful tree lined path. Our siblings stood on our respective sides. Andy’s nephews carried a banner reading “Uncle Drew Drew, here comes your bride” and were so adorable in their tuxes and Converse sneakers. My aunt Brenda and our close friend Brian did readings. We also incorporated small elements of our heritage. During the ceremony and cocktail hour, Tim Ball and Sophie Orzechowski played Irish music, including a beautiful rendition of “She Moved Through the Fair” for the processional. The flower crown, ringing of bells as we were pronounced husband and wife, reading of an Eavan Boland poem, thistle boutonnieres and tartan pocket squares were all small nods to our family history.

I also really cherished the moments walking alone with Andy to join the cocktail hour. Immediately following the ceremony, we took couples shots with Alexandra as our guests began enjoying cocktail hour. When we finished up with the photos, Andy and I walked through Suzanne’s gardens to join the celebration. As we approached hand in hand, ready to join all of the people we loved, I was overwhelmed with an indescribable feeling of excitement and calm. It was incredible to see all of our loved ones gathered in one place, laughing and celebrating, and to observe everything briefly from afar. This was a fleeting, but wonderful moment before joining everyone for a long night of incredible toasts, great food, and dancing.

Through it all, we were so grateful to have Alexandra and Michael of Alexandra Meseke Photography with us every step of the way. Alexandra offered fantastic advice throughout the planning process, from sketching the path of the sunset at our ceremony site to reviewing timelines and recommending that we plan for golden hour photos in the wildflower fields across from the lake. Together, Alexandra and Michael are such a comforting force that it almost seems like you’ve got close friends by your side. And their talent and intuition is amazing, they captured the feeling of our wedding day perfectly.

Behind the Scenes with One of Australia’s Hottest Designers

Brides, you’re in for a very special treat today — not only are we getting to know bridal designer Moira Hughes better thanks to Sonia Allen Makeup‘s fabulous profile, but we’re getting a peek into the designer’s salon and her gorgeous dresses! Take a virtual tour of Moira’s beautiful loft courtesy of Natasha Foster and Angela Rose Photography and see why we have a major crush below!

From Sonia Allen Makeup When asked about her inspiration, it all comes down to brides and fabrics! “Meeting someone who is newly engaged, hearing about their wedding and learning about their personality. A picture starts to form and excitement between us builds on the perfect wedding gown. Seeing all the new laces come through from Paris is incredible and sparks so many new ideas. Sometimes a unique lace will stay in my mind just waiting for the right dress and when it all comes together this is really inspiring.”

A Moira Hughes bride is…“a bride who wants everything! They want the timeless gown to love in 50 years time but also a dress that is young, modern and unique. She wants to look incredible but also be really comfortable to drink, eat and dance her night away! She is not afraid to stand out but also wants that romantic elegant and demure silhouette.”

I ask Moira how long her gowns take to make and what the design process involves and am thrilled to learn that all dresses are made in Sydney (pretty rare in 2016!). “A couture gown is usually started about a year in advance. The first step is securing the fabrics and laces from Paris, ensuring the time for the gown to be created has been booked out and everything is ready for the bride. Closer to the wedding the fittings start, the last taking place just two weeks before the big day to make sure the fit is really perfect.

The fact that everything is made in Sydney means we have complete control over each design and can create dresses really close to a bride’s wedding date, allowing her as much time as possible to get her ideal wedding day body!”

With the bridal industry being no stranger to trends, Moira gives me her predictions of what we can expect to see in bridal couture. “Its all about the back! Low, low backs, higher necklines and more detailing. Other tones are starting to creep in too – bridal blush and dove greys are emerging for the more fashion-conscious bride.”

And finally, Moira’s advice for a woman deciding on her dress…“Stay true to your personality, perhaps pick out a couple of words to describe yourself on the day. If it is classic, modern, pretty or glamorous- use that as a guide. You will regret wearing a dress you were talked into, hair you never usually like, shoes that are too high or make up much heavier than usual. Stay true to yourself and you can’t go wrong!”

From Sonia Allen Makeup… One would say that having incredible talent, passion and drive alongside being warm, energetic and fun is a winning combination…Profiling Moira Hughes, I discovered she is just that combination! The British-born designer has always known she wanted to design wedding gowns and spent years working with some of London, Dublin and Sydney’s best designers before creating her own label and opening her Paddington Boutique.

Starting every day with a cup of tea (she has never had a cup of coffee!), Moira says that designing is something that has always come naturally. “I have little sketches of wedding gowns everywhere- even without realizing it I suddenly have little brides spinning around a notepad.”

Moira’s boutique, nestled in the heart of Paddington, is a merging of New York loft meets Parisian chic. A converted barn with exposed brick, high ceilings and raw finishes, her space cleverly combines the finest components of classicism with an elegant and refined twist. The boutique is light, airy and modern, yet very intimate.

“The beautiful space has the convenience of being near the city combined with the romance to reflect the craftmanship of our gowns. Each bride has the whole boutique to herself, it adds to the experience.”

With such an enthusiasm and genuine love for her craft, Moira says the best part of her job is meeting with brides. “The excitement in designing a gown she will remember forever and feel the best she has ever felt is infectious! I find myself thinking of brides and their dresses on the weekend, particularly on their wedding day. It is a whole journey I am so grateful to be part of.”

The Dreamiest French-Inspired Wedding Set in Ohio

At first glance, I was pretty certain this wedding took place at a far away French chateau. But after reading the sweet words from the bride (you must read their love story!) I learned that instead of a destination wedding, they brought their dream destination to Ohio. Complete with a soft palette, romantic Plume Calligraphy paper moments, and an elegant garden setting, this day shot by Justine Milton and filmed by Little Tree Studios is an absolute dream come true.

From The Bride… I met Michael in the 7th grade, I must have just turned twelve.

Michael walked in the side doors at our church group and I knew he was new. He had big “mushroom” like hair and a lanyard out of his cargo shorts. I welcomed him to the group and left before he was swarmed by the other middle school girls. That was the start of our friendship.

My Teta, grandmother, told me once that the beautiful relationships start as buds and then bloom. I can tell you she was right about ours, except that maybe the blooming part took a little longer than Michael might have liked.

Michael and I’s relationship consisted of me dodging his throws during dodge ball (unsuccessfully) and visiting Steak and Shake on Wednesday nights until my parents sent me to Worthington Christian for high school. Michael was one of the two people I knew at the school. Michael walked me to class on my first day and nearly every day after that.

During our first class together (Spanish), we talked about guitar, Michael told me how he only played electric and he’d never sing in front of people. I told him that I liked acoustic and he should sing and play, I told him I’d play with him. A week after, Michael was playing acoustic and singing “Better together” with me before school…I should have known.

Slowly, we became best friends. We studied together, challenged each other, distracted each other in class, called one another with broken high school hearts, sang in choirs, planned each other’s dates, debated theology, played in bands, attended each other’s sporting events, grew to love the same friends and ate lunch on the floor of the hallways together.

Michael and I were teased by everyone in the school. The girls on my soccer team would spot us and giggle. At our senior gala everyone clinked their glasses as a friend started a toast by saying, “Dearly beloved we are gathered here today…” (I was so embarrassed that I can’t remember the rest). It didn’t help that I wore a white dress and Michael a black suit… (Note: Michael asked me to spring gala the first day after Christmas break).

Two days before graduation, as we were sitting on the front of my car after his baseball game he looked at me and told me he “loved me and wanted to marry me”. I responded by telling him I didn’t feel the same way and I wanted to forget he’d ever said anything so we could just keep being friends (ouch, I know. Michael doesn’t remember this so either he blocked it from his memory or I thought it instead of saying it out loud. You might say that moment is a bit of a blur for both of us.) Yes, graduation was awkward.

Michael says this phase in life should be titled, “The escape from the friend zone”. I’m stubborn but Michael is persistent. Soon flowers would show up in my dorm room, letters would be sent, and no matter what function I went attended – Michael would be there too.

The phrase “distance makes the heart grow fonder” couldn’t be more true.

Michael moved to Terre Haute, Indiana – 254 miles away – our first year of college while I stayed in Columbus. Before the first month of undergrad was even over, I realized I missed him terribly. Michael became a constant pixelated face on my computer screen. We’d talk till 2 in the morning, meet each other’s new friends, and of course – study. Michael played baseball at his university and I made a visit to him in Indiana. When I got there to see him, he picked me up and spun me around, I knew something had changed.

November 23, we starting dating outside of La Chatelaine, thus began our four year long-distance relationship. (And there was much rejoicing by all of you). During those four years, Michael grew a beard, cut his “mushroom” hair and learned to eat spinach. I finally got my A in calculus and learned an umpire wasn’t called a “ref”.

We studied on Skype for hours on end (sorry for all of you who’s internet connection suffered as a result). We decided that we wanted to love Jesus most and each other second. We drove to each other’s universities for weekend trips. We had picnic dates on the river bank in the summer. We started ONELIFE, now POINT, together. We hiked. We grew with the Lord. We danced on top of the roof. We lost loved ones. We (I) tried to make Michael mad at me, but it never worked. We invested time on our campuses. We jumped the fence and snuck onto the baseball field after dark. We valued our friends. We built things, Michael a robotic foot- me a company. We learned about each other’s cultures. We looked at mountains we wanted to visit. We began to love each other’s families. We traveled. We learned how to cook.

We wrote letters. We prayed together. We fell in love.

Remember those mountains? On the morning of my birthday, Michael gave me a map with the mountains circled in it. We headed out to Colorado a month later. There on the last day of the trip, in a valley quite like the photos we exchanged in college he said, “Remember I told you I loved you and wanted to marry you? I mean it more today” and with that he asked me to marry him. (And obviously I said yes, though I just stood there in shock for a few seconds and forgot there was a ring involved). (And yes, he asked my dad first).

Growing up together is an odd thing. The boy I met in middle school isn’t the man I’m marrying today. And, I’m positive I’m not same girl either. This has been our first year living in the same city as a couple. Michael is back in Columbus at Ohio State for his doctorate in biomedical engineering and I’m trying to change how society connects with charity through a social media app.

We are more than happy to have put Skype to rest and be 10 minutes away from each other again. This year we’ve ran races, hosted dinner parties, made business plans, explored Columbus, planned our wedding and best of all – seen each other every week.

So when you see us walking down the aisle, I hope you feel the Lord’s blessing as we do.We have been blessed these past ten years with a story that has turned into the most beautiful bloom.

My favorite moments of the day were simple. After we walked down the aisle, Michael and I walked in the gardens by ourselves and hid under a tree. That moment seemed to stand in time and in my memory. I loved standing in the dressing room with my bridesmaids looking at them all dressed up! It felt surreal! When everyone was dancing, the dance floor was so crowded Michael and I danced in the grass together, I was barefoot and my hair was flying everywhere but it was a perfect moment. We loved that Michael’s groomsmen and my cousin provided live music for our first dance. I loved running out to the car together, tossing my bouquet and getting to see everyone who had stayed to send us off. As I write these out I know there are more favorite moments that I’m forgetting!

My grandmother, who we called Teta, would have loved to be with us on our wedding day. Growing up in Egypt and attending a French school, she loved French fashion and it’s no surprise I do too. We chose our venue because of the French Provincial Architecture and honestly, the hand painted wallpaper in the dining room imported from France. It’s sometimes the small things that trigger your memories.

While I was getting ready Michael sent over his wedding gift to me. It was a pendent to fasten to my bouquet that held my grandmother’s wedding picture with a note that said “So that she can be with us on our special day”. We all cried, but it was a beautiful reminder of her. As I write this now I still tear up.

Michael and I must have been thinking along the same lines, because I asked the flower girls to deliver his grandfather’s pocketknife, which he kept in his jacket pocket during the ceremony. Along with the knife was a journal with my thoughts and prayers for him over the last 5 years. I started it addressing the entries to my future husband before Michael and I had started dating.

The musicians were all friends and family. What a blessing they were! My sister’s friends, 14-year-old twins, Isaiah and Daniel Wu, and my friend, Stephan Spottswood from college played during the ceremony. Michael’s friend, Caleb, played “You are My Sunshine” for the parents’ dance. My cousin, Lauren, and Caleb play “Better Together” (the first song Michael and I played together in the 9th grade) as our first dance.

We were married on May 23rd at half past four, on our four and a half year dating anniversary. Clever right? The officiants were three of the pastors that have we have known in different seasons of our lives. My uncle flew from Egypt to be with us on the wedding day and give the sermon. One pastor was from the church where we first met and the other from where we attend now. We chose to have Song of Songs 8:6-8 as our reading:

Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death,
its jealousy as enduring as the grave.
Love flashes like fire,
the brightest kind of flame.
Many waters cannot quench love,
nor can rivers drown it.
If a man tried to buy love
with all his wealth,
his offer would be utterly scorned.

As per Egyptian tradition, we gave sugar-coated almonds to our guests as a small token of thanks! To practice my new initial, I painted gold “B”s on the bags. After 300, I think I’ve got a cursive B down. I tried to bring bits of my family and heritage into the day in my own way.

I was a romantic little girl growing up. I loved dresses, lace, big open blooms, gardens, books like The Secret Garden and movies like Robin Hood. I think that romantic side resurfaced while preparing for our wedding. I chose soft open white blooms for our wedding day. We were blessed to have that as our family and friends arranged the flowers for our day. Even the greens were selected with love, my mother-in-law searched the whole city to find one maiden hair fern for my bouquet. It was such a special gift to have loved ones play a visible roll in our wedding day.

I had always heard the search for bridesmaid dresses was difficult, but I wasn’t prepared for how challenging it would be. For bridesmaids of different heights, body types, and skin tones we gave up trying to find the right dress ready-made. I’m sometimes too ambitious for my own good, and I decided that I would design the dresses myself. I’ve never spent so much time in a fabric store in my life. The dresses came to life with the skills of Cloty Julca and Christine McWherter, who stood with me for hours in the middle of the fabric store and sewed for countless hours more.

I designed the tablescape with inspiration from many fine art workshops I’ve seen. My mom and I made the table runner and the place settings were to have pops of gold in the flatware, plates and thin-stemmed candle holders. Our place settings had thin-rimmed glasses which I collected before the wedding!

It’s been a record summer for rain in Ohio. Our weather is known to be temperamental to start. When we told our parents we wanted to marry outdoors in May, they weren’t enthusiastic. We didn’t even have a back up tent but the weather was the most perfect day it has been all year. So forget the dress, the weather was the most talked about detail of the wedding and still is.

We couldn’t believe how many guests stayed to see us off! Our guests cheered and lined the front of the house as we neared the car I tossed my bouquet. It was simple and exciting, a perfect way to end the night!

Coffee + Waffles + Beer, This E-Sesh is Foodies Dream

Total engagement session envy is happening over here, because this couple? They included coffee, waffles, AND beer in their special day – talk about the best day ever! Captured by the talented Sheradee Hurst Photography we’ve got the cutest couple waiting for you in The Vault!

From Sheradee Hurst PhotographyI photographed this lovely film engagement session of Quinn and Hannah in two places that where perfect for their love story. Hannah loved the idea of a local coffee shop for part of their session, and for their outdoor photos she wanted a wooded look. They selected natural colors to wear and the tones were on point for the two locations Quinn and Hannah are so comfortable with each other. There is no need to pose a couple that is as in love as they are.

From The Bride…Quinn and I met our Sophomore year of college when my Sorority and his Fraternity were paired together for a Greek Competition. It took me a while to realize that Quinn had a crush on me, although he thought he was being pretty clear. Within a few months he convinced me to date him, and within a year he had stolen my heart!

After three years, we knew we wanted to spend forever together. On November 13th I accepted a big girl position that I would be starting after graduation. Quinn wanted to take me out to celebrate the big occasion. However, he had bigger plans. He told me we needed to stop at my grandmother’s house because she wanted to congratulate me in person. When we got to the doorsteps of my grandmother’s courtyard, candles and lanterns were scattered about. Quinn took my hands, got down on one knee, and asked me to make him the luckiest man and be his wife. I didn’t need any convincing. Of course, I said YES!

This Vineyard Picnic E-sesh is Everything

Having had experienced the magic that is Charlottesville I totally get why these Californians opted for a vineyard e-sesh there. For not only can I can attest to how incredibly captivating this place is, it’s also got wine that is simply put: delish. Thanks Hedge Fine Blooms and Top Knot Studio for creating the pretty, because we’ve got this e-sesh from Michael and Carina Photography to share. See it all in The Vault!

From Michael and Carina PhotographyFor thousands of years, wine has been associated with romance – and no wonder! Rachele and Justin’s love of wines is matched only by their love of each other. It was such a joy to photograph their engagement session at Keswick Vineyards, one of our favorite wineries & locations in Virginia!

From The Bride…Justin proposed in San Francisco and we spent our engagement weekend celebrating in Napa Valley, so I wanted to have our engagement photos taken on a vineyard to tie it all together! We went to the rustic yet very elegant Keswick Vineyards in Charlottesville, VA where we started off with a wine picnic (something Justin & I love to do together). Everything in our picnic was from a local Charlottesville market that we picked up that day, including the bouquet made by a local florist. Another detail that I love when looking at the photos is the wine corks on the cheese knives are meaningful to us – one is from the bottle we had in San Francisco the day we got engaged, and the other is from a bottle we brought back from Napa and shared with our parents to celebrate our engagement! It was important for us to include some extra meaningful details into our pictures. We had a great time turning our engagement session into a date together and truly had so much fun, although I’m sure the wine helped!

Trust Us, You’ll Be Head-Over-Heels in Love with This Bride’s Something Old

Lots of Brides wear their grandmother’s wedding dress or a piece of their jewelry when they say “I do,” but this gorgeous Bride (with beauty from Mia Moriguchi) chose something else as her Something Old: her grandmother’s wedding shoes. But that wasn’t the only special detail. In their loving ceremony, this gorgeous Bride and Groom exchanged his grandparents’ rings that they had worn for 46 years of marriage. See every magical moment from Jason + Anna Photography and Heart Visuals in The Vault!

From The Bride…My husband and I got married on Kauai, HI on October 2nd. Kauai holds the most special place in my heart. My grandfather grew up there, my great grandfather was the civil engineer for the island, and we have a house that’s been in our family for 4 generations…so to me, Kauai is my home. It was the perfect setting for 110 of our closest family and friends to join us, on island time.

October 2nd began with a guys surf session on Hanalei Bay, the setting for our week of fun. The girls got ready at Lani Kai, an island-chic ranch style home located right on the bay. Mia Moriguchi and her team glammed my girls up as we got ready for my favorite day. The setting was perfection – we were relaxed and thoroughly enjoying ourselves! Couldn’t believe I was surrounded by my 10 favorite ladies (and my dad) in the entire world. Anna Ball captured these photos perfectly. You’ll see shots of a newspaper that my now sister-in-law created; it’s an Austrian tradition (since my husband is Austrian, we had to incorporate his heritage, too!). Isabelle summoned friends from all walks of our life to write articles…she called it “The Nuptials.” Our moms wrapped bells around the paper the evening of October 1st and then hand-delivered it to every house in Hanalei…so in the morning, guests woke up to the daily edition of The Nuptials.

When we were dressed to the nine – I in my Hailey Paige Carrie Gown and my grandmother’s wedding shoes and my hula girls (as I lovingly referred to them) in floor length Adrianna Papell sequin dresses – it was time to venture to the ceremony and reception site at Na Aina Kai Botanical Garden. 240 acres of pure island bliss located right outside Hanalei Bay. It was ours for the day.

My husband and I held our first look in the Tea Tree forest, the same setting where the ceremony would take place. It was just the two of us, and it was so special. The image that sticks out in my mind so vividly is seeing Patrick standing turned away from me, amongst all the trees, as I walked towards him. Tall, handsome, sporting his John Varvatos suit (that he had not shown me until the big day, as well!). We were then joined by our wedding party for pre-ceremony pictures.

The ceremony was magic. Friends described it as being “set in an enchanted forest” and a “dream land.” The setting was spectacular, but it was the ceremony itself that makes my heart sing. Our great friend, Logan Welley, served as our officiant. This was his first wedding and boy did he knock it out of the park. The bridal party walked down the aisle to Bob Marley Is This Love, my dad and I walked down to Iz Something Over The Rainbow, and our procession was set to Tropical Lady (island song). We had close friends read stories from when Patrick and I first fell in love 10 years ago in high school, we exchanged our own wedding vows, and when the time came for Logan to ask our guests if anyone objects to our wedding… he turned that tradition on its head and instead asked our guests to raise their hands, throw the “shaka” and scream “SURFSUPTHURMERS” (our wedding hashtag) if they were “all in” and supportive of us tying the knot. On top of that, he surprised Patrick and I by learning how to blow a conk! I had told him at one point that he should learn to do that… because it’s a tradition at Hawaiian weddings…and he jokingly shrugged it off, but low and behold, he learned! We closed the ceremony by exchanging Patrick’s grandparents rings that they had worn for 46 years of marriage and shared a kiss that made us husband and wife! It was truly a dream.

The reception was held in a grassy lawn right next to the beach. The waves that day were incredible as a massive storm was rolling in. Our island-style taco bar, Bruce’s (my dad) Tiki Bar, and the dance floor were set in and amongst and massive clear top tent with white orchids hanging over the dance floor. These orchids matched the ones that served as the backdrop for our ceremony site and my bouquet, and the table décor consisted of King and Queen Protea to align with the single King Protea each hula girl carried. The tables were named after beaches on Kauai and instead of signing a guest book, Patrick hand built a wooden surfboard for our friends and family to share messages with us on. While guests sipped on a Blushing Bride (tequila and grapefruit), a We Mai Tai’d The Knot or one of the Grooms Groundswell Brews, Patrick and I snuck away with Jason and Anna Ball (photographers) and Matti Haapoja of Heart Visuals (videographer) to catch the last bit of sun. You’ll see quite a few of these pictures that were captured during this time – all locations were within Na Aina Kai Botanical Garden.

When we returned to the tent, dinner commenced and my twin sister made her Maid of Honor speech and Patrick’s brother spoke as well. We then danced the night away. Patrick and I shared our first dance to Ed Sheeran Thinking Out Loud, my dad and I danced to Frank Sinatra The Way You Look Tonight, and Patrick and his mother danced to Amos Lee Sweet Pea. Our guests enjoyed our dessert table, we did the Hava Na Gila (since Logan – our officiant – is Jewish) and topped off the night with a sparkler line which was so fun to experience with Patrick and our pup, Charlie (who played the ever-so-important role of walking the groom down the aisle).

From JCG EventsWe were inspired by the venue Estancia Culinaria We wanted to capture its beauty and add a bit of enchanting mystery to this shoot. The ceremony was set under a helix dome in a forested area on the property. The concept was to design a setting that provided the impression that the couple stumbled upon this structure and decided to get married. The simplicity of the design gave it a more romantic feeling.

The invitations were designed with grey paper and gold letterpress ink with charcoal hand calligraphy. Fresh hand picked guava fruit garnished the signature cocktail drink, which were served in metallic West Elm glass coupes from the oak barrel bar. The garnish provided a pop of color and complemented the dark ethereal florals and enchanted feeling of the centerpieces. The centerpieces with a bit of an untamed wild flare, were complemented by matte black candlesticks and gray candles to complete the look. The reception was set under a Sperry tent with a collection of beautiful rustic tables, set with cocoa dinnerware with forged bronze matte finish flatware. The cake was a work of art in itself, multi-tiered with a large and dark sugar flower that provided a visual mystic at the center of the cake.

The inspiration shoot came together through all the details and everyone working together to bring the vision to life. The couple evoked the raw emotion of this enchanting storybook fairytale.

Pretty Plates + A Two-Piece Dress Make This Tropical Shoot A Must-See

Can I register for these plates by Adelfa, pretty, pretty please? I’m obsessed! But while the tableware may have initially drawn me in, this dress, Meant To Be Calligraphy flourishes, and all the beauty created by FourNineteen Weddings is what has kept me in this Vault gallery for the past severals hours (no joke!). So, thank you Audra Wrisley for capturing it all and making this Tuesday a whole lot better – we owe ya’!

From Audra Wrisley… Inspired by the local flora and fauna in Costa Rica, this wedding inspiration shoot was set at the Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort, which provided a perfect backdrop for our modern and organic shoot. The resort is located in one of Costa Rica’s most alluring areas; nestled on the Culebra Bay in the northern province of Guanacaste.

Complementing the modern and eco-friendly design of the venue, the talented Barbara Broutin from FourNineteen Weddings opted to use sea glass toned colors and geometric lines for the florals and design aesthetic. Elky Suarez custom designed an incredible two-piece, lace and silk bridal gown in soft ivory and blush, which was the perfect focal point for the shoot. The designers at Artflower opted for exotic orchids to decorate the tablescape and ceremony site, and created a flawless cascading bouquet for our model. The hand-painted plates by Adelfa were also custom created for the occasion, inspired by the shapes and colors native to the Guanacaste area.

We soaked up the last few minutes of daylight on the resort’s deserted beach in one of Costa Rica’s infamous sunsets.

A Typical Sit-Down Reception Wouldn’t Do for This Laid-Back Couple

This right here is my kind of couple. For a normal sit-down reception just wouldn’t do for this laid-back duo. Their choice of celebration? A Mediterranean cocktail party complete with a wishing booth that acted as their interactive guestbook, Brigadeiros in lieu of a wedding cake, Beauty in the Making at the helm, Love in Vintage rentals, and Ozzy Garcia behind the lens. Overall, it’s wedding day perfection. See it all in The Vault!

Whimsical

From the Bride… Daniel proposed to me while we were in Brazil visiting his family on the rooftop of the world famous Hotel Fasano, at sunset. Besides the beautiful scenery of Rio de Janeiro, what made the moment even more special is that we were surrounded by family and friends. I remember all of the girls gathered together to take a photo (pre-planned but unknown to me) Daniel came up and grabbed my hand, got down on one knee and I thought “what in the world is he doing”. I was so surprised that I have no idea what he said after that… but I do remember saying yes!

The wedding was Mediterranean cocktail inspired. I wanted the entire vibe to feel warm, inviting and super laid back. As if we were having a small outdoor gathering at our own home. Everything from the seating layout, to the music and the way we planned the food was designed to encourage guests to explore, mingle with each other and feel the love. It was a very intimate, small wedding so we were really able to focus on laughing with friends and family, enjoying the live music and beautiful Miami night, not an evening fixed around a traditional wedding agenda.

I loved our “wedding aisle” that we walked down, it was a combination of vines that fell from the sky. I also loved the “Wishing Booth”, it was sort of an interactive guestbook. Instead of wedding cake we did Brigadeiros which are a traditional Brazilian dessert (since the groom is from Brazil).

Daniel’s favorite moment was seeing the bride for the first time. And Kelli’s special moment was that kiss at the end when they say “you may now kiss your bride”

An advice for future Brides & Grooms: Don’t stress too much. The best advice I got was from Daniel when I was having a freak out moment leading up to the wedding. I was worried that things weren’t going to be “perfect”. He said to me – “Babe, no matter what happens that day, if it rains, if it snows, if the flowers don’t show up, if spill wine on your dress (almost happened), in the end we will still be marrying each other and that’s all that really matters”. I pretty much melted in his arms when he said that.

How To Bring A Beachy Vibe Into Your Home Without Going Overboard

Typically when I think of coastal, it’s all  driftwood and starfish. Not my cup of tea. But this home to designer and blogger Meredith Rodday of View from My Heels is my favorite kind of tea. Calm and cozy that exudes coastal charm without any blatant ocean paraphernalia. Instead it’s layered with texture and prints, moody blues and that perfect shade of white. And did I mention shiplap? Oh yeah, that too. Check out even more of this New England home with gorgeous imagery by Kate Renyi in the VAULT.

Four years ago we bought a new house that was very well built but that didn’t really feel like our home with our personality. So we decided to add some functionality as well as some design elements that make the spaces more unique to us! I’ve fallen so hard for that laid back California look with lots of white and bright rooms.

Also I’m always inspired by Studio McGee and House of Jade. The goal was to create calm and bright spaces that felt relaxing in the midst of a chaotic (but fun) life with young kids. In the past I’ve always decorated with color but I find as I get older and as life gets busier, I’m increasingly drawn to calm palettes. It’s been a fun departure from the bright spaces of my past!

Our entry had a big double height wall where I tried a gallery wall but nothing ever felt right. I toyed with wallpapering the whole space but I have wallpaper commitment issues (!) so the right choice for us was to shiplap. I did a ton of pinning and googling before figuring out exactly where the shiplap would go.

The natural point seemed to be to match the height of the floors on the second story. I decided to add a picture ledge to the top of where the shiplap ended on that big wall. I love seeing our family photos every morning when I come downstairs! We also shiplapped the front of the stairs to tie it all together.

I thought long and hard about adding shiplap to the entire entry but in the end decided against it – budget was one of them! – and we can also go back and add it at a later date if we want. I had the un-shiplapped walls painted white to match the shiplap and unify the space. It looks so fresh and clean – we love how it turned out!

If you know that we have 4 year old twin boys you had to be wondering, where are the toys? See that gray bookcase thing? That’s where. And also inside the console behind the sofa in the first photo, in the built ins, and on that side table next to the sofa too.

In the kitchen we changed out the island counter and the pendants above the island and the sink. I did a 2″ edge on the counter because I love that thick look. It’s marble and we have to be careful but it’s pretty and so, so much better than the old tan granite. I had already added the backsplash a couple of years ago in preparation for these updates. We also swapped out our old metal counter stools for leather ones to add a little warmth and texture.

The bench cushion is indoor/outdoor fabric and has already been put to the test with tomato sauce and wiped up no problem!

We added a new pendant (and the not-so-old light was moved into the dining room), table, chairs (and said farewell to our high chairs for some boosters), and built in seat. The built in was a late decision as we were doing the work from the other projects last fall and I’m so glad we pulled the trigger. It changed the whole space. The roman shades are pretty much the only thing that didn’t change but now they look like they belong!

I decided to choose a custom cabinet to fit the space. I wanted a clean look so I went with inset cabinetry and a white quartz top. I had the fabricator miter a 2″ edge which is a good trick and way to fake a thicker counter. I also decided to have no overhang on the counter so it fits the cabinet base cleanly.

The mirror is from restoration hardware and I love the super simple rounded corners. I went with brass for the lighting, mirror, and knobs and chrome for the faucet. The mix of finishes make it feel more interesting and I love the non-matchy matchy look.

We added sconces above each dresser and put them on a dimmer so they give off great ambient light.

The built ins have made such a huge difference not only in terms of storage but also coziness. They are painted dove white by benjamin moore. Hardware is from schoolhouse electric, one of my very faves.

I used the same linen for the bench seat cushion as for the bed and had the seamstress do a french seam for a less tailored look. I love how it came out!

I love how the bed and nightstands came together. The bed I wanted was from restoration hardware but even the lowest headboard height was too high for the window above. Covering it up seemed awkward so I opted for the custom route. I found this guy, jordan, in arizona who make exact replicas of the RH beds (and any other one you might want) in custom sizes. Score! The company is called custom beds and headboards, straight forward enough! Honestly his pricing is fantastic – no more than buying it from RH including shipping and tax. So I quickly scooped up some greige linen fabric and sent it to him to do his magic.

The tufting is well done and the thing is sturdy. I also had a giant 4 foot lumbar pillow made from boho pillow on etsy. The shades and duvet cover were pretty much the only things left over from the old room.

The built in design was heavily influenced by a snap I saw on instagram (have I professed my love for IG lately?!). The only real change we made was to add doors to the lower section – the original was all drawers which looks awesome but wasn’t as practical in real life. I chose kendall charcoal by benjamin moore for the built ins and love the way the dark color pops. We moved our old tv from the family room down here and it works well in the new space. Definitely feels more integrated!

On the wall to the left of the built ins (where the zebra is in photo above and below) I made a grid of oversized clothespins that are hung with command strips – quite possibly my favorite product ever – to show off the boys artwork. It’s fun (and easy) to rotate all of their masterpieces and they love that their work is on display!

On the opposite side of the built ins is a play table for the boys and their friends with a ton of ikea storage. Thank goodness for ikea right? Also I used the same pattern for the roman shades as for the wallpaper. I think it helps unify the space.

Wall Color: simply white, Benjamin Moore | Built in Color: Kendall Charcoal, Benjamin Moore | Built in Hardware: Pottery Barn Boulevard Collection (i think sadly it’s sold out) | Sectional | Wallpaper and Roman Shade Fabric | Zebra | Sofa Pillows: see my IG post here – all sources are tagged and all of them are shops i found through instagram | Oversize Clothespins: see my post here and you will also get a peek at the “before”

After completing the project I invited clients and friends over to check it out and shared it on Instagram. I had a great response which feels so nice after months of hard work and research! It also enabled my business to grow because people could see first hand what my designs look like – a nice side bonus!

Our next projects include the dining room which we’ve made good progress on and the office which has a ways to go. Transformations definitely don’t happen overnight and there’s a lot of ugly – even in designers’ own houses – before the pretty stuff comes!

An Ethereal Garden Party Wedding We Can’t Believe Is Real

From Laurie Arons Special EventsElise & Sean are one of the kindest, sweetest couples I’ve had the pleasure of sending down the aisle, and with beautiful taste too. Elise imagined an elegant and romantic day for her hometown San Diego wedding, and the team of vendors loved working with her to bring this vision to life.

The couple were married in a Catholic ceremony at Founders Chapel, before joining guests at their reception at the Lodge at Torrey Pines. We transformed the Lodge’s green lawn into an ethereal garden party, with custom wood structures by Rrivre Works. Mindy Rice Design pulled out all the stops adorning the structure with greenery & flowers, while beautiful light fixtures cast a soft glow over the dinner.

The tabletop was one of my favorite parts of the wedding. Elise & Sean’s wedding was the first to use Casa de Perrin’s Sage & gold florentine chargers, which looked beautiful alongside their gold flatware & cut crystal stemware. Following dinner, guests danced away to Encore, one of the incredible bands from West Coast Music.
