Margaritas and Matrimony, This Colorful Destination Wedding Is Everything

If this title is any indication, you should probably be warned that this wedding is absolutely everything. Because what happens when you combine margaritas and matrimony? Well, it’s definitely something special. As evident by this colorful celebration from Bash Please and Our Labor of Love. It’s one party you won’t want to miss and we’ve got it all waiting for you in The Vault!

From Bash PleaseCristina and Hanley came to us thinking that they were going to get married in Ojai, but after chatting with them about what they pictured for their wedding weekend, we knew that Mexico was a better fit. They are both so lively and full of energy, and they wanted to create a full weekend of celebration with their closest friends and family. We guided them towards the Riviera Maya in Mexico. With its incomparable beaches, incredible local flavor, and unparalleled customer service, we knew it was the spot for them. The Rosewood Mayakoba is one of the most beautiful resorts in the world, and its attention to detail of design and service is impeccable. We wanted to have the design of the wedding capture the local beauty and flavor of Mexico and keep it cohesive with the thoughtful simplistic design of the Rosewood Mayakoba. We sourced local goods and textiles, worked with an amazing florist based out of Mexico City (Gabriela of La Muses de las Floras) who foraged for all local plants and florals to create wild yet composed native arrangements and installations, and let the Palapa at the Rosewood be the backdrop for an unforgettable night. We kept the palate for the wedding fairly neutral to keep in line with the existing design and natural materials of the property with pops of Papaya, and Anthurium. We tried to create a balance with the contrasting natural materials local to the area and simple, modern designed papergoods and signage, in the hand of Mon Voir, that lend themselves to the clean design of the hotel. There were churros, fireworks, a surprise guitar performance by Cristina’s dad, and dancing into the wee hours of the night.

You’ve Never Seen Horseshoes Look So Chic

When you book a wedding at the prettiest horse stable turned events space, it’s only natural to incorporate a few equestrian design elements. With Belle of the Ball by their side, Katherine and Ben did just that and I guarantee you’ve never seen horseshoes look so chic. Take a peek for yourself inside the gallery by Rustic White Photography.

From Eva Clark of Belle of the Ball Events… When Katherine and Ben began the search for their wedding venue, they were thrilled to discover that there was a new European stable, just outside of Atlanta, that served as an event space. A lifelong lover of horses, Katherine fell head-over-riding-boots for this chic equestrian venue located on picturesque land on the Chattahoochee River. As the planner, I really wanted to add a unique equestrian element to their reception. So I cleaned and painted old horse shoes and made them into table numbers. Of the many design details, the custom Greek key runner on the head table was one of my favorites. We had a large rustic cross made for the ceremony, which really helped define the space and anchor the ceremony site. This was special to the couple, devout Christians, as they really wanted their ceremony to be a spiritual one for their guests.

Light, Airy Blue Hued Wedding

Natasha and Drew wanted to treat their guests to the ultimate California celebration. For them that meant sweeping ocean views, great food, and a day designed around Natasha’s favorite color – light blue. That calming, airy hue served as the overarching inspiration for their planner, Tessa Lyn Events and Jillian Rose Photography brought all the details to our pages.

From the couple… Our first date was on the Manhattan Beach Pier on May 1st, 2014 after two months of ‘dating’ on FaceTime. Drew had pursued me for literally years. For him, it surely was love at first meeting. We had met about 2 years before at a group dinner with mutual friends. But once the timing in our lives was perfect, we started to talk online and immediately knew that each of us were ready for this relationship. With Drew living and working in Atlanta and me living in Los Angeles, this distance only strengthened our growing love for each other. After a few months, we moved in together in Marina Del Rey and started living bi-coastal for over a year. During this time, we traveled extensively throughout the US and the Caribbean, growing together while visiting many places on our bucket lists. From hiking the Grand Canyon and enjoying the beaches of Jamaica, the Bahamas, Catalina Island, and Tulum Mexico we explored many amazing places while learning and loving each other. Yet one of our most memorable trips was to my birthplace of Haiti. During this trip, we explored this amazing island, met with family, friends and most importantly, my father.

Because Drew knew he one day soon would propose, he knew meeting my father was one of the most important journeys he would ever take. Our travels eventually took us to Nice, France for an early summer vacation. This is the trip when Drew planned to ask for my hand in marriage. And while we sailed around the islands near Saint Tropez, we stopped off at a secluded beach where he proposed and I said yes! We were married at a private home overlooking the ocean in Malibu. For our family, friends, and us, this day was the culmination of years of loving each other and becoming best friends. This day was the most amazing representation of the love we have for each other and all those who know us. We plan more journeys for years to come and will be honeymooning soon in Asia and the Polynesian Islands.

A Picture Perfect Parisian Engagement

I’m pretty sure these two struck photography gold when they discovered Oliver Fly via SMP’s Vendor Guide. Through emails and Skype, they got to know one another and when they later connected in Paris, it all came together picture perfectly. With engagement pics taken all over the city of light and love, it’s a love letter to Paris and their relationship. See it all in our Vault right this way!

From the Bride-to-be… Cameron and I are living in the Yarra Valley, a wine region in Australia located East of Melbourne. We met five years ago on a night out with friends. His brother, whom I went to school with, introduced the two of us and we started dating a few weeks later. Just over a year into our relationship we were lucky enough to travel to Europe for a two month summer holiday. While there, we fell in love with some of the most beautiful cities in the world including the city of love, Paris.

We were planning our second trip to Europe for this summer when Cam popped the question in November last year. He had planned a picnic for the two of us at a lake in the mountains as a fantastic backdrop where he grew up. He read me a couple of poems before asking me to be his wife. It was so sweet! I don’t know how he kept it a secret, as I’m usually one to pick up on things.

It didn’t take long before my heart was set on a Parisian engagement session, the perfect getaway for our couple. I started looking for photographers in Style Me Pretty’s Vendor Guide when I came across Oliver Fly Photography. Oliver’s style was exactly what we were looking for, soft, elegant and romantic. We got to know Oliver through a bunch of emails and a Skype call and eventually we were just counting down the days.

On the day of our session, Oliver made us feel very comfortable. It was such a fun day and Oliver captured our love perfectly ! We planned our session for the middle of summer and we started in the morning with the Eiffel Tower, the most iconic view of Paris. We ended up this lovely sunny day still on the right bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement with the historic monument of the Louvre Palace and its stunning architecture. We couldn’t dream of a better photography experience in Paris. Now, we are exploring ideas for our wedding, most likely to be somewhere beautiful in Australia in the Yarra Valley where we live. Or maybe Europe… who knows !

Taking a Small Space and Crafting the Dreamiest Nursery

This dreamy, neutral nursery is proof that you don’t need a huge space to create a gorgeous kid’s room. Limited on size but overflowing with creative ideas, these parents to be set out to craft a softly hued nursery with pretty modern touches for their baby girl on the way. From cloud mobiles to the cutest ever unicorn rocker, see how they made this small nursery shine with even more captured by Kylie Martin.

My husband and I are expecting our first little one at the end of summer. We live in a smaller home so the rooms are limited in terms of space. I knew immediately that I wanted a fairly simple color palette and that playing up on natural tones like white and tan would make the area feel bigger.

We wanted a slightly modern touch to the room and were able to source some great pieces from places like Pottery Barn Kids and Home Goods. We are so excited to welcome our girl and spend time with her in this room as she grows.

Whimsical

From the Bride… Aaron and Julie first met at a fundraiser volleyball game for Gordie Hartshorn at the Fair Play gym on January 31 st , 2014. Their mutual friend Saraha Burnett set up the team. In Aaron’s 34 years he was never much for approaching a girl, but he noticed something about Julie’s name. “Lollar is your last name? Was your grandfather Solomon Lollar?” He told her how Solomon had evangelized and fellowshipped with him when he attended Southwest Baptist University. Julie’s grandmother, Rosalie, was a cook at the university. Solomon would come to eat there and then talk to the students as he felt led by the Lord.

A few months later, Saraha was listing out all the eligible bachelors that she knew and wanted to fix up with Julie. None seemed appealing to Julie. “What about that guy from the volleyball tournament?” she asked. Saraha squealed and excitedly exclaimed, “Aaron Evans, oh my goodness he is perfect!” The fact that Aaron had deep conversations with her grandpa and that he had taken the time to listen and learn from him kept Julie wanting to know more. Solomon had passed away when Julie was only 9 years old. Her family had often told her that she had the same passionate and stubborn soul of her grandfather. She had always wondered what it would have been like to know him and have conversations with him if she were older. This was her chance to find out more. Sarah took no time in setting up a date.

Aaron thought it best if he reached out to Julie beforehand so he knew what he was getting into. They talked back and forth on Facebook for a while and began to feel an open door. Her curiosity kept her wanting to know more and his sweet nature fed the desire. He told her stories of her grandfather and things Solomon shared with him. Aaron said he even had a bible study that Solomon gave him. Julie eagerly requested the study and her heart jumped when she saw the date. “Is this date right?! If so, this was only a few months after he passed away.”

Julie’s family had known of the study, but had only bits and pieces of it. They did not know he had finished it before he passed away. Aaron had the complete study… and Julie had to go to Aaron to get it. A date was set up and nerves were high. April 26 th , 2014 the two finally met at The Bean with the purpose of finding out more and if this was the one that the Lord had intended for them. Aaron talked A LOT like he had at the volleyball tournament, but Julie was more interested at what he had in his possession. He had brought the bible study that Solomon had wrote and given to him, “Four Things the Church Needs to Hear.” She quizzed him further and felt a comfort in listening to him. As the weeks rolled by, they would meet up occasionally to walk and talk around the gardens at SBU. Both content on not moving further until God allowed, they built up walls to prevent an unholy relationship. She offered no warm fuzzies of affection and kept her distance if she felt him too close. He told all the wrong things and showed her a side of him that this world looked down upon. There was no wining and dining, no kisses at door, no dressing to impress. They simply walked.

During this time, Julie did not necessarily know how she felt about Aaron. She was disappointed with what the world had to offer, but wanted know for sure if the Lord was leading her to someone. Since she was not head over heels for Aaron she began to ponder letting him down easy. But something in her told her to be patient. Having not listened in the past, Julie knew the Lord’s ways were better than her own. Months before this, Julie had learned that lesson the hard way. She had sought a man by her own will and not the Lords. It left scars of remembrance, but also a heart abandoned. On the night her heart was aching, she cried to Lord to take all feelings of earthly men away. “If you are to give me someone, give me one of your sons. Someone that has a passionate heart after you, that people love and lean on, and that will love and care for me. But if there is no one, then I am content with you Lord.”

On June 14th, 2014 Julie got the answer she was seeking. She was at the wedding of Mariah Fulbright and Eli Samek. Mariah’s father was officiating and telling the story of how Mariah was some prize (surprise). Julie wept in her seat as she heard the words and the desire in her heart for a husband to see her that way grew. In the moment she received a message from Aaron who was attending a different wedding. It was a picture of him seated with an arm curved out and it read, “Someone is missing.” Peace overwhelmed Julie’s heart and tears of realization that Aaron was the one she was to marry flooded her face. The next time she saw Aaron she looked at him with admiring eyes. He would forever be the only man she was attracted to. April 30th, 2016 the two exchanged wedding rings. She was more than happy to put her grandfather’s ring on Aaron’s finger with assurance that it would remain there as long as they both shall live.

This Ethereal Seaside Inspiration Is Purple with a Purpose

Purple with a purpose, that’s what we’re dubbing this dreamy inspiration from Kurtz Orpia. Brimming with sun-kissed shores and a lace-clad barefoot bride, this is one photoshoot that’s sure to inspire a few seaside staycations. From the wonderfully elegant Seniman Calligraphy, to the aspiration seaside setting, we’ve got every bit of this photo shoot waiting to inspire your big day in The Vault!

From Tufts & Toile Vintage Rentals & DesignFor me, there is nothing more peaceful than to stare at an endless sea of waves as the sun is about to set. On the day of shooting we were given this ideal lighting near dusk that truly brought out the blend of soft, airy delicate details that defined this ethereal shoot. Our model had beautiful movement throughout, walking barefoot along the beach. She adorned two looks, one boudoir and one bridal, both looks complimented by a breathtaking cathedral veil. An intimate sweetheart table sat right on the edge of the water. The waves tried relentlessly to push the organic runner closer to shore and left remnants of the lake on the legs of the furniture as they rolled backward. The organic floral arrangements brought in the perfect amount of soft colour, using blush, lavender and peach. But it’s the lavender that is ever present throughout, from the calligraphy ink and vintage stamps, to the fondant floral detail on the cake and the amethyst stone on the vintage ring. These stunning images were captured on film by Kurtz Orpia. I’m always thrilled to work with such inspiring photographers and his images get me every time. This was my first creative working with a film photographer, which brought forth so much excitement, and anticipation to see the final images. We are so spoiled with our instant digital playbacks. It gave me a new found appreciation for the art of film, and the uniqueness it brings to a creative shoot.

This is the Most Popular Engagement Ring Cut in the United States

Diamonds are forever and we’re forever in love with diamonds. From elongating oval cuts to glamorous emerald cuts and everything in between, every diamond is dazzling. And, according to the new America’s Diamond and Jewelry Ranking report from WP Diamonds, one diamond cut is more dazzling than the rest. Scroll down to see all the results!

With its classic shape and timeless elegance, the brilliant cut diamond is America’s favorite diamond cut. And for good reason, the round brilliant cut maximizes the fire of a diamond, making it sparkle and shine brighter than the rest.

[dotted]

While brilliant diamonds are overwhelming the most popular cut, different states have different preferences. In fashion-forward states like New York and California, unique shapes like oval and pear cut diamonds are most popular. But in more traditional states like Rhode Island and Texas, the emerald cut is most popular.

[dotted]

As the queen of diamonds, Elizabeth Taylor, once said, “Big girls need big diamonds.” And in the 10 states with the biggest diamonds, that’s definitely true!

The Best Ever End-of-Summer Pie Recipe (with Booze!)

There’s no doubt that we miss having our former Living editor, Jacquelyn of Lark & Linen around the virtual SMP offices… from her interior design expertise to her impeccable style, and of course, those damn good recipes of hers. But thankfully, she’s a part of our fabulous lifestyle collective and we still get to drool over her desserts like this Bourbon Brown Sugar Peach Pie. Get the recipe below!

BOURBON BROWN SUGAR PEACH PIE

ingredients

FOR THE CRUST (makes one 9-inch lattice pie)

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbsp. Granulated sugar
1 tsp. Kosher salt
1 cup (2 sticks) cold, unsalted, butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 1/2 cup cold water
1 cup ice

FOR THE FILLING

1. 5 pounds fresh, super-ripe peaches (2-3 cups, sliced), sliced into 1/2″ chunks
3 Tbsp. Cornstarch
2 Tbsp. Brown sugar
1 Tbsp. Bourbon
a generous pinch of salt
1 large egg
1 tsp. Water
granulated sugar, for sprinkling

instructions

FOR THE CRUST

In a medium bowl, stir together flour, sugar, and salt. Add the butter and, using a fork or pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour mixture until pea-sized pieces of butter remain (note: a few larger pieces are totally fine – make sure you don’t over mix the dough. The butter chunks give you the flakey delicious bits.)

In a small bowl, mix together the cold water and ice. Gradually add the ice water into your flour mixture, 1 tbsp. At a time, blending with your hands until the dough just comes together. If there are some dry bits remaining, add a few drops of water and mix them into your dough ball. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Shape your first half into a round disc, and the second half into a rectangular disc. Wrap both tightly in plastic and refrigerate for an hour. Once chilled, sprinkle your work surface generously with flour. Grab the circular disk and roll it out until it’s 1/4″ thick, and 11-12″ in diameter (place your pie pan on top to make sure the dough is large enough). Move the dough into the pie plate by folding it into quarters, then placing it onto the pie pan and unfolding it. Press firmly into bottom and sides and trim edges using kitchen shears, leaving 1/4″ lip. Cover gently with plastic wrap and place in fridge. Remove rectangular half of dough from fridge and roll it out, on a flour lined surface, until it’s 1/4″ thick and 10″x15″ in size. Cut dough lengthwise into 1/2″ strips using a sharp knife. Place strips on baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap, and place back in fridge while you make your filling.

FOR THE FILLING

Mix together the peach chunks, cornstarch, brown sugar, bourbon, and a generous pinch of kosher salt until well combined. Pour into your pie shell, spreading evenly across the base. The secret to a beautiful lattice is to make sure your filling is as flat and even as possible. Using the chilled pie crust strips, weave a lattice onto the top of your pie (here’s a great little tutorial: https://vimeo. Com/134252379). Cover loosely with plastic wrap and chill in fridge for 1 hour.

TO BAKE

Preheat your oven to 350 F. Whisk together your egg and tablespoon. Using a pastry brush, brush the egg wash onto your pie dough and sprinkle liberally with sugar. Place pie pan on a sheet pan and bake in oven for 45-55 minutes. Cool on wire rack and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

A Summertime Wedding with Shades of Pink + Peach

More than pretty flowers or a perfect place setting, Lauren and Jeremy wanted their wedding designed by Amore Events to focus on what matters most. “Our goal was for everyone at our wedding to sense the love we have for each other…we wanted it to feel like us, but in a way that honored our family and friends and their never-ending support.” It’s a sense you feel in every image by Michael and Carina and you can see it all with a trip to The Vault.

From the Bride…Jeremy and I dated for over five years before getting married. We met one another while working at the same consulting firm in Washington D.C. I’ve lived in Virginia almost my entire life and Jeremy has lived in Virginia for a long time. Virginia is our home. When Jeremy decided to go back to school full-time and get his MBA he chose Darden, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. While Jeremy lived in Charlottesville, I stayed in Washington, D.C. and came to visit him on the weekends. We spent so much time with friends wine tasting at Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards. After Jeremy proposed in December 2014 while we were on vacation in Turks and Caicos, we immediately knew we wanted to get married at Pippin Hill! We wanted our wedding to honor us as a couple, as well as celebrate our future. It was important to us that every detail have significance and meaning (my center diamond in my engagement ring is the diamond that Jeremy’s father proposed with to his mother, I wore my grandmother’s engagement ring and wedding ring on my right hand during our wedding ceremony; we chose our processional musical selections carefully since Jeremy is musically talented and plays both the guitar and the drums, we chose to celebrate loved ones who couldn’t be there at our wedding, among other details).

Our goal was for everyone at our wedding to sense the love we have for each other. In addition, we wanted all our friends and family to sense how much we love them and appreciate that they came to celebrate with us on our special day. We wanted it to feel like us, but in a way that honored our family and friends and their never-ending support. Pippin Hill is nestled in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains and is only about 15 minutes from downtown Charlottesville. Pippin Hill truly displays how beautiful the state of Virginia is. The grounds and vineyards provide an agrarian feel, while the private Granary room has a rustic charm of an old barn. We loved that Pippin Hill would not feel overwhelmingly rural, but that it would encompass romance, elegance and a timeless style. Even though Charlottesville is only about 2 hours from Washington, D.C. we wanted our guests to feel like they were getting away for the weekend and enjoy themselves in the countryside of Virginia and #39;s Monticello Wine Trail. We wanted our wedding to be a mixture of rustic and elegant. I have always been a romantic at heart and wanted our wedding to be classic but with our own sense of style as a couple. Pippin Hill’s setting did not need much added, as the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the vineyards, the outdoor veranda and the indoor Granary private dining room gave us plenty to work with.

As our guests entered the reception in Pippin Hill’s Granary room, they found the dinner menu displayed in calligraphy on a large chalkboard and their names and seating numbers hand-written on vintage mirrors. Bistro lights were draped from the ceiling to create soft and romantic lighting. As our guests sat down at their tables, they found a twig of lavender as an accent on their plates. We loved the idea of soft cream tablecloths with overflowing florals in blush and peach undertones. We chose white and peach peonies, ranunculus, david austin roses, garden roses, russian olives, seeded eucalyptus, hydrangeas and plenty of greenery. We wanted our florals to feel like they were snipped from the garden and effortlessly displayed in gold and mercury glass vases. We wanted muted blush undertones and nothing overwhelmingly pink. Hurricane lanterns and plenty of candles flickered throughout the evening for a timeless feel. For our head table, we sat at a large farm table with lace and greenery runners, rustic lanterns and candles. We didn’t want to detract from, but rather enhance Pippin Hill’s beauty.

On the day of our wedding, I wore my Amy Kuschel form-fitted lace wedding dress that I purchased from Hitched Salon in Washington D.C. I had each of my bridesmaids wear Amsale blush chiffon gowns and let them choose their own hair and makeup styles. My two younger sisters were both my Maids of Honor and are my two best friends. The three of us have always been close since we were young, like the Three Musketeers. I wanted them to feel special and stand out from the rest of the bridesmaids. Their Amsale chiffon gowns were the same style as the bridesmaids, but their gowns had a beautiful printed pattern in a light shell color. My hair stylist, Brianna Adams and makeup artist, Gohar Beaver ensured our looks were glowy, dewy, and natural. I wanted us to look natural and effortless. The day of the wedding was perfection. We could not have asked for better weather. There was not a cloud in the sky and there was zero humidity, which is a rare occurrence for a Virginia winery wedding in mid-June. My wedding planner, Cody Grannis (Amore Events by Cody) and Pippin Hill’s day of coordinator, Hannah Davis ensured that every single detail was executed flawlessly. We didn’t have to worry about anything besides feeling all of the feelings, and just enjoying each blissful second.

Our wonderful photographers, Michael and Carina of Michael and Carina Photography and videographer, Jonathan Joy-Gaba (Joy Gaba Photo) captured so many moments that we have relived again and again; including when we first we saw each other in the vineyard, my father walking me down the aisle, and the insane dance party that ensued after dinner, care of our 7-piece band, DC Fusion. DC Fusion was amazing and completely set the vibe for the rest of the night. Everyone danced all night long! Since the weather was so perfect many of our guests enjoyed Pippin Hill’s outdoor veranda for cocktails and Cuban cigars. Our wedding day at Pippin Hill could not have been a more perfect way to begin this new phase of our lives together. We were beyond fortunate to have met the BEST vendors in the business, and be supported by our loving family and friends in the process. They are truly who made the day as beautiful as it was for us. We feel so fortunate that we have such an incredible day to reflect on, as we take on this new endeavor that is marriage!

When They Couldn’t Find Their Dream Garden, They Found a Way to Create It

For this floral loving couple, it only made sense to plan a big day overflowing with lush blooms and loved ones. But when they couldn’t find their dream garden venue, they decided to ‘bring the garden to the guests’. Captured by Maison Meredith Photography, this is one celebration that’s colorful yet totally chic. See it all in The Vault!

From the Bride…Ever since I was a little girl I loved flowers. Ideally, our wedding would have been set in a garden filled with big blooms and lush greens. However, it was very important to Reece and me that all of our friends and family be able to attend. We decided to get married as close to our hometown as possible. Being from rural Wisconsin provides some challenges to finding a conveniently located garden, so we decided to bring the garden to our guests!

We achieved our garden vision by filling both the ceremony and reception with as many florals as possible without being overwhelming. We chose a tent for our reception site to help to make the wedding feel a little bit more like it was set in a garden. We also love the outdoors, and a tent reception was the perfect way to have the outdoor feel combined with a safe haven from Mother Nature, if needed.

We chose our colors based on the colors we love using in our daily life. Reece’s favorite color is gray, and he wears shades of blue often. Both Reece and his groomsmen wore a navy blue tuxedo, and we used gray and silver as accent colors. I tend to lean towards wearing neutrals with a pop of color or a standout accessory. I wore an ivory and silver gown with a bold earring and flowing hairpiece. I chose latte for my girls and paired the gown with an ornate earring.

My favorite moment of the day was our ceremony when we finally became husband and wife and then were able to spend the rest of the day together celebrating with our guests. The day was absolutely amazing and filled with more joy and love than we could have ever expected. I have to credit the amazing team of vendors I worked with for helping to make the day go as smooth as possible. If I could give brides-to-be any advice, it would be to hire vendors that have both done weddings that are in line with what you are envisioning and you trust to do work you will absolutely love.

An Aqua-Infused Garden Wedding That Will Make Your Hearts Happy

Say goodbye to the days of awkward aqua hues (I’m looking at you, 1980’s) and hello to a new version of one of your fave colors.  It’s the POP of pretty that’s making this wedding sing, along with beautiful details from A Swanky Affair and gorgeous blooms from Tre Bella Florist.  Fall in love with every colorful moment captured by Casey Rose Photography in THE VAULT.

From Casey Rose Photography… When Ben, an attorney in NYC, planned his proposal to Leah, a lawyer in the same firm whom he had met at Duke Law School, he knew it had to be memorable. He decided to trick her into coming to his family cabin under the guise their was an emergency at the house. Being more of a city girl, Leah hated the cabin and dreaded making the journey in the freezing winter temperatures, but agreed to go with Ben. When they arrived, Ben had a surprise picnic awaiting them. Even at the site of the candles and champagne, Leah still thought it was for the workers who were supposed to be coming to help with the fallen tree emergency. She couldn’t understand why Ben would choose to propose in a setting that was not her favorite place.

Then Ben told her that he chose that location because it represented everything that made Leah uncomfortable. He wanted her to know that even in darker days – he would always stand by her side. He knew marriage was never easy, but always worth it and he couldn’t wait to spend the rest of his days with her.

When it decided to rain every day before the week of their planned outdoor garden wedding, Leah and Ben were content with their Plan B. They knew that even in darker days, their marriage and vows would be the focus of the day. Their positive attitudes were rewarded by sunny skies for the entire morning and afternoon of their wedding. When the final picture was taken, a clasp of thunder and lightning greeted them in celebration and as all the guests and wedding party ran to the tent, they knew they had the most perfect day.

As Reverend Malcolm Roberts said in his blessing, “If you don’t believe in miracles, all you had to do was witness the end of Leah and Ben’s vows.”

Six Simple Steps to the Prettiest Party Florals

If your idea of do it yourself party florals is a quick run to Trader Joe’s and a plop into whatever vase you can find then this post is for you (and me too). Learn how to make the prettiest party centerpiece in six simple steps from Petite Petal and Chloe Legras At Boxwood Avenue along with images by Indu Huynh.

When planning a backyard dinner party (or any dinner party for that matter), I always reach for a beautiful floral arrangement. Being a DIY girl at heart, I rarely purchase anything premade; instead, I head to the flower market to source the prettiest blooms, and then create my own arrangement! Finding a gorgeous tulip (or kumquat stem!) can become the source of inspiration for the entire table. Petite Petal Co. Is showing us how to easily recreate this beautiful arrangement with just a few simple steps. Captured by Indu Huynh, this arrangement can easily be placed in a copper vessel for a modern affair or in a clear traditional vase for a more elegant approach.

Begin by cutting a small square of chicken wire. Use your hands to form the chicken wire into a dome shape roughly the same size as the vessel opening. Place the wire securely into the vessel.

Use floral tape to form a grid over the top of the vessel, then fill it with water.

Start by adding a few interesting greens into the wire base to form the foundation of the arrangement.

Now you can begin adding other greenery into the arrangement. The girls at Petite Petal Co. Showed me how to use greenery to build the shape of the centerpiece. On the left hand side we allowed the arrangement to stand tall, and flow down the right hand side where it draped over the side of the vessel.

Once the arrangement is built with greenery, you can begin adding some flowers. Step back away from the arrangement and spot any holes that need to be filled, then use flowers to fill them!

Save your favorite (most precious) flowers for last. I like to call these the ‘wow’ flowers. Place them strategically to add negative space, shape, and dimension to the arrangement. For this arrangement we used garden roses & kumquats!

Saturday Morning Movie: Two Dolphin Trainers Say I Do on the Beach

While most of the country is welcoming fall with open arms, I’m not ready to say goodbye to summer just yet. And lucky for me, we have a beachside celebration to linger with for the weekend ahead. We have two dolphin trainers and a summer romance that turned into so much more, with Focused Bliss Productions capturing the moment they because Mr. and Mrs. With the Pacific Ocean in the background, it’s pretty amazing if we do say so ourselves. Sit back and soak up summer just a bit longer.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/176499088 600 338]

From Focused Bliss ProductionsBoth dolphin trainers in San Diego, Melissa and Nik are a couple who imbue true love and are hopelessly in love with one another. They appropriately held their stunning wedding on the Silver Strand Beach facing the open ocean. This beach is conveniently adjacent to the Loews Coronado Hotel at which they held their morning preparations and evening reception party. Not a detail was missed to tie it all together – from a color palette of teals and blues, to starfish and sand-dollar decor, to a seahorse cake-topper! We just love every aspect of this wedding, but most of all, the raw emotion felt throughout… Especially as Melissa walked down the aisle moving Nik to tears!

From the Bride… Nik moved to California to chase his dream job as a dolphin trainer, and we first met at our mutual friend Roland’s birthday party. I knew Roland through a marine mammal internship that we were both completing at the time. I showed up to his party wearing my favorite piece of jewelry, a sea star bracelet, that I received lots of compliments on that evening. After our first meeting, it would be months until Nik and I would run into each other again. I had just started a new job and had only been working there a few days when he approached my table at lunch to welcome myself and a few other new hires that I was sitting with. I friendly reminded him that we had met once before, but he did not remember me and the look on his face was priceless. A few days later we were sitting at a lunch table together when he finally remembered meeting me that night because of the bracelet I had been wearing. After going out a few times (mostly group dates), things fizzled out.

A few weeks later I ran into him in the work parking lot where he had a flat tire. He had tried everything to get his spare tire off, but one of the bolts was stripped so he wasn’t having any luck. Since I had AAA, I offered to call them and ask for assistance. We got his tire all fixed up and on my drive home he texted me asking what I was doing later that evening. I replied with something about cleaning my apartment and his response was “Well when you’re done with that, why don’t you let me take you out and buy you a drink and flirt with you”. For anyone who knows Nik, they know how bold he is. It was so upfront and honest, that I couldn’t say no. We ended up having a great night and quickly found ourselves in a summer romance that grew into something much more. We fell in love and became inseparable.

We’ve supported one another through the ups and downs over the years that we have known each other. The day that he proposed to me was the second best day of my life, with the first being the day I became his wife. He has become my rock, my best friend, and my soulmate, and when it comes to our relationship, there’s two things that I’m most thankful for: flat tires and Nik’s persistence with me. Without the two, I would have missed out on the greatest love I have ever known and my future husband.

Our wedding day was inspired by our love for the sea, and we wanted to share that love with all of our friends and family! Nik and I grew up on opposite sides of the country, him being from Massachusetts and myself being a Southern California girl, yet both of us were right next to the ocean. Our love for that big body of water and all it’s marine life was something that was instilled in us at a very young age. That love is still present to this day, as we are both dolphin trainers and conservation advocates. It was more than clear when we began our wedding planning adventure, that the theme needed to revolve around something we were both so passionate about. We were set on a barefoot-toes-in-the-sand beach ceremony, as we both had discovered early on in our relationship through casual conversation that this was something each of us had dreamed of. Once we knew our ceremony would be on the beach, we set forth in finding a location for the rest of our wedding day. Nik and I selected Loews Coronado Bay Resort as our venue for our cocktail hour and reception. It was actually the first and only venue we visited, falling in love with it instantly! This was where our style vision for our big day was born. With the classic and chicness of Loews, and the natural elements from a beach ceremony, we decided our style was beach chic. We were on a strict budget like many wedding couples are, and since I consider myself a crafty and creative person, I decided I would take on DIY-ing many of the details for our big day.

The wedding ceremony took place on Silver Strand State Beach, where guests enjoyed a view of the beautiful California coast. Our color palette of deep teal, turquoise, hemlock, pale grey, and silver was not only ocean inspired, but is also a combination of my favorite color, blue, and Nik’s favorite color, green. Every detail present was designed to play off of the already beautiful location. Before guests found a seat, there was a place for them to take off their shoes and enjoy the sand barefoot like the bride and groom would soon be doing. The area was marked by a sign that I built with pieces of a wood palette. I stained the wood a driftwood grey, and painted the words “shoes here, vows there, love everywhere” on the planks. Placed just at the entrance of the aisle way, I created an eclectic set up of teal glass vases varying in different shapes and sizes, each overflowing with greenery. Along the aisle were chair decorations consisting of teal silk ribbon that I had hand dyed to capture the various hues of the ocean, each accented with a white sea star. It was extremely difficult to find ocean themed vow books that didn’t have an anchor on them, so I bought plain little notebooks and painted our own design on the covers. I even took it upon myself to write our ceremony, adding in readings and words that touched our hearts, along with a knot tying unity ceremony and our own personalized vows. Nik’s best friend Roland, and the man responsible for our paths crossing, got ordained and officiated our wedding for us! After the ceremony, guests were escorted to a cocktail hour located outside on Loews’ Beach Terrace, providing guests with cool drinks and a stunning view of the harbor.

Since Nik and I, along with our friends and family, would be moving away from the ocean for the reception, it was important to us to continue the feeling of being seaside. Hemlock linens and turquoise charger plates colored the tables, and the beautiful Constellation Ballroom was lit up with some of the most stunning chandeliers I have ever seen. There was also teal uplighting provided by our DJ to continue with the mood we were setting for our guests. There were short and tall candle votives that I had hand painted in different hues of teal with a silver trim placed on the tables. Nautilus shells were placed on each table, indicating their number spelled out in a hand painted calligraphy inspired font. I used to paint a lot as a hobby so I painted a teal ombre background onto two canvases, one displaying a love quote on it that I had engraved on our cake cutting knife, and another welcoming our guests to our wedding that included our wedding hashtag, #stokedtobeakafkas. Two of my absolute favorite details were our dessert cake plates that I wrote out “Just Married” on, and because we’re dolphin trainers, our bride and groom chair decorations were wooden dolphin cut outs painted grey that I also did calligraphy on, as well! After dinner and lots of dancing and even some Greek dancing (Nik’s family is Greek), we were sent off as husband and wife in a sea of sparklers, only to return back to the dance floor. We ended up extending our reception by an hour because we simply weren’t done dancing just yet!

Each one of our vendors contributed greatly to helping us create our dream wedding day. Our flowers were designed by Patrick of Artistic Florals, and we decided to go with a simple, loose design of all white flowers with some greenery. The flowers I selected for the bouquets included garden roses, ranunculus, freesia, and white beauvardia, with dusty miller and seeded eucalyptus. All of the bouquets were hand tied with cascading white ribbon hanging down. For our ceremony and reception, floral decorations included the flowers and greenery mentioned above, in addition to hydrangeas, larkspur, and dendrobium orchids displayed in three foot tall glass vases. We recycled our flowers from our bamboo arch and placed them on our sweetheart table, and all of the vases from our ceremony were placed around the reception area as extra decor.

For our cake we decided on a classic three tier design from BabyCakes Bakery. To match our invitations and keep with our wedding theme, we chose to do a teal ombre for our design. The three flavors we selected were chocolate decadence for the bottom tier, blood orange with blueberries for the second tier, and a lemon bavarian creme for our top tier, all covered with some of the best buttercream frosting I have ever had! Another one of my favorite details from the day was our cake topper, which was a paper laser cut out of two seahorses from the Etsy shop, Ingridlouise. It absolutely completed our vision!

In lieu of favors for our guests, we donated to the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund. This is something very near and dear to our hearts as they have donated over 11 million dollars in conservation grants to over 800 organizations around the world since it was created, and currently, the Fund provides over $1 million each year to conservation programs. To let everyone know about our donation, I printed out the information on cards with plantable paper that had wildflower seeds in it! We skipped menus and ceremony programs to limit the amount of paper products we used, and thought the plantable paper was a great alternative for everyone to have something to take home with them!

I decided to design our wedding invitations from scratch, using a blank template on Zazzle’s website. I had a vision for our invitations and could not find anything remotely close to what I was picturing in my head so I decided to make my own custom design with a teal ombre background. After designing the invitations and receiving them, I used a customized rubber stamp of two seahorses to stamp on each card. There were many elements that I did my own calligraphy on, some I mentioned earlier; others include our invitation envelopes and our guest’s place cards that helped them to find their seat.

I am a very athletic person so I knew my gown had to show off my figure that I was working hard for! I went to Here Comes The Bride in San Diego and tried on a Casablanca Bridal gown (style 2163), and I instantly knew it was the one! It was a mermaid silhouette with embroidered ivory lace on tulle, with a silky champagne colored satin lining. My favorite detail of the dress had to be the eyelash fringed scalloped lace along the front and back necklines, and the entire hemline. I accessorized my dress with a handmade ivory satin belt with a crystal and beaded appliqué from Blossom Veils and Accessories, a cathedral length, one tier, cut edge veil, and a delicately gorgeous garter from Etsy shop, Miss Scarlet’s Garters. For the ceremony I wore handmade crystal barefoot sandals from the Etsy shop, BeNelipots.

My favorite moment from our wedding day is actually a tie between two events. The first being Nik’s reaction when I came down the aisle. I have never seen him cry before so it really meant a lot. When I asked him later what was going through his mind at that exact moment, he said he just couldn’t believe how beautiful I was and it moved him to tears. The second event was our first dance. It was choreographed and we had put in a lot of time and effort into making it perfect! To have it go off without a hitch and to remember every step was a huge accomplishment for myself, and it was so much fun!

If I could give out any advice to future brides, it would be to take the time after the ceremony to be alone with your significant other for a few minutes. After the ceremony and photos, my husband and I spent a few minutes alone in the room I got ready in right next to the ballroom. There was champagne and hor d’ouvers waiting for us and it was perfect. We spent the last couple of months focusing on everything wedding related so taking the time to enjoy each other’s company as husband and wife was just what we needed.”

Their Ceremony Backdrop? The Manhattan Skyline.

When these two Brits set out to tie the knot in the Big Apple, they wanted a top-notch vendor team to bring their dream day to life. Naturally, they brought on Weddings By TwoAnthony BrownieMarcey Brownstein and 74 Events, just to name a few. With guests traveling in from all across the world, the pros made sure the celebration was a party to remember…and we say mission accomplished.

From the Bride and Groom…As two Brits living in New York, we debated long and hard whether it would be a London or Manhattan wedding for our big day.

After seeing the amazing views we could offer our guests at Studio 450 and the blank canvass provided by the space, we decided to jump in and try to deliver a classic New York experience.

From the outset we wanted to bring the city into our wedding day as much as possible, which is why we opted for a rooftop ceremony with stunning skyline-views that provide everything from the Empire State Building to One World Trade as the backdrop for our day.

We had a crowd of guests flying in from all over the world, so the venue helped bring a true sense of New York to our out-of-towners. We decided to soften the industrial city views with our color palette, flowers and décor. The combination of the gleaming white, industrial space with the soft pinks and greens of the flowers and table settings helped add a little bit of elegance to the skyline. Our florist Anthony Brownie worked hard to connect our day through the carefully chosen flowers and arrangements that dressed our rooftop ceremony, our table decorations and the bouquets and boutonnières. Classic soft pink and white roses were complimented by more textural plants and leaves that helped provide stronger edges to echo some of the industrial elements of the building and skyline.

The whole day was accompanied by a classic playlist including Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, to give a timeless and very New York feel to the wedding.

We were truly blessed with the weather, it was blue skies and sunshine all day and any fears of some August thunder-storms quickly evaporated. One of our best memories is walking back down aisle, in the shadow of the Empire State Building and seeing our friends and family uniformly adorned in the teal sunglasses we provided. The weather and skyline helped to paint a fantastically romantic view of the city throughout the day; as our reception unfolded, the sun went down and our guests leapt to the windows between courses to capture the sun set over Manhattan.

In between the ceremony and reception our genius photographer helped us sneak out and capture some late afternoon photos on the Highline…it was a wonderful break between everything happening on the day and allowed us time to take it all in and have our very own New York minute.

Finally, we wanted to bring a real flavor of America into our wedding food and we were delighted with the creative but classic menu provided by our caterer Marcey Brownstein. Mini selections of beer and pretzels, lobster rolls and mac n cheese balls were served as hors d’oeuvres and the petite cupcakes and cheesecakes for dessert all helped our guests hopefully get a proper taste of the city. Even the late night snacks of grilled cheese and donut holes proved to be a welcome late evening pick me up.

Above all, we wanted to throw a damn good party so as day turned to night, our DJ made sure everyone hit the dance floor mostly with a signature cocktail in hand. As the evening closed out, we managed to get some time, just the two of us, back on the rooftop looking in at our friends and family dancing, just us, the moon and a New York skyline, the perfect end to the perfect day. We still can’t quite believe it.

#SMPWedding101 – Negotiating Room Blocks with Hotels

I remember those days of calling hotels for our wedding guests, leaving messages, following up on cutoff dates and more. It was never ending. Enter Roomblocker: Roomblocker takes care of all that stuff and more – so you can busy yourself with more important things. They even request specific hotel contract terms that give you the most flexibility, and monitor those contracts so no one (aka you) is at risk for unfair situations. Wedding planning just became less stressful – sign us up!

1. Ask For A Courtesy Block

A courtesy block is like a free room block insurance plan – you won’t be on the hook financially for any rooms in your block that don’t get used. By default, Roomblocker always requests courtesy blocks on your behalf. Be sure to confirm with your hotels if they can offer a courtesy block and carefully review your contract (look out for any attrition/minimum commitment terms). While not every hotel will be able to offer courtesy blocks, some hotels are flexible and may be willing to revise their terms. But if not, then consider shopping around until you find better terms.

2. Start With 10 Rooms

One of the most common challenges is estimating how many rooms you’ll need. We always recommend starting with the minimum for group rates (10 rooms), so you can best avoid the risk of over committing. You can always increase your block later if it starts to fill up!

3. Request Shoulder Dates

We recommend booking rooms on the night of your wedding, and also the night before for close family members and the wedding party who will be attending pre-wedding activities. Aside from these two nights, ask the hotel to include shoulder dates. This means that guests who arrive earlier or depart later can book their entire stay at the group rate (subject to hotel availability), and you won’t be on the hook for these extra nights.

4. 21 Day Cutoff

The cutoff date is the official deadline for guests to reserve a room at the group rate. After this date, any remaining rooms will be released by the hotel for general sale and group rates will no longer be eligible. To give your guests ample time to arrange their travel, Roomblocker helps to request a cutoff date that is 21 days prior to arrival.

5. Concessions

Getting a discounted group rate is important (on average we see a 15% discount), but an often overlooked opportunity for savings is asking for concessions, like free wifi or even free room nights. Are you and your fiance planning on staying at the hotel? If so, then let the hotel know and ask for a complimentary room the night of, or a complimentary upgrade at the group rate. And whatever you do, definitely ask for a complimentary amenity for the night of your wedding – maybe you’ll have a bottle of champagne waiting for you at the end of your wedding night! Here’s some other concessions to ask for in order to hook up your guests:

● Complimentary guest room wireless

● Complimentary parking

● Complimentary breakfast

● Bonus reward points for the bride/groom (e. G. SPG points, Hilton Honors points, etc.)

● Complimentary gift bag distribution upon arrival

6. Consider Hosting An Event Onsite

If you’re planning on hosting any pre-wedding or post-wedding activities (ex. rehearsal dinner, after wedding brunch, etc.), then consider hosting it at the hotel in one of their event spaces or onsite restaurants. You’ll have priority over other groups who are only booking accommodations, and you’ll have more leverage to negotiate a better package all around.

7. The Golden Rule

Although wedding planning is stressful and contract negotiations can be a pain, always remember the golden rule: be kind. Don’t forget that hotel sales managers have stressful jobs too, and kindness goes a long way in negotiations. Plus, you want to make sure that you and your guests will be treated kindly during their stay.

They Brought the Feeling of Italy to their California Wedding

He proposed while they were traveling through Florence, so naturally these lovies wanted to channel that European romance for their Napa wedding. They chose Beaulieu Garden for its Italian style charm and JNS Events, Lori Paladino, La Tavola, Paula LeDuc, and their entire vendor crew worked their creative magic. Right this way to all the pretty…

From the Bride… My husband Joel grew up in San Antonio, Texas and is the youngest of three boys. Joel graduated with honors from UT in Austin and then jumped to Houston and Dallas with his career. Needless to say, he was an All-American Texas boy so when his next career moved him to San Francisco, he didn’t know what was in store for him…

I grew up in Southern California and moved up to Sonoma for college. I moved to San Francisco after school and spent 8 wonderful years in the city. A friend of mine reached out asking me to join her for her boyfriend’s work happy hour. We were to meet at a fancy new bar in the marina called Reed & Greenough. When I walked into the bar, I thought there must be some mistake because the only people I saw were my girlfriend, her significant other, and one other guy sitting at a round table. After a drink, we started some shuffle board and the rest was history. Joel and I had so much fun exploring San Francisco together, the entire city felt open and new. We loved trying new things like wooing and wine pairing classes, new restaurants, and going on weekend trips to Stinson Beach, Napa, Mendocino, Tahoe, Carmel, and more. After 3 years of dating, we went on a trip to northern Italy together. The 3rd night of our trip, I had made a reservation at a beautiful chateau called Villa San Michele. I had no idea Joel even knew about the reservation but my parents leaked the secret when he flew down to Orange County the week before to ask for my hand in marriage. That night in Italy while we were getting ready, Joel completely had me fooled asking to go grab pizza down the street and if he should be wearing a coat, etc. Once we arrived to our little piece of heaven overlooking all of Florence, we walked around the gardens enjoying the scene. Finally at dinner, Joel excused himself to use the restroom and came back on one knee.

Wedding planning was a lot of fun and what we cared about most were music and an extraordinary venue. Once I found Beaulieu Garden, the search ended. It combined the feel of Italy and Napa for an elegant and beautiful day. The little details such as having our favorite vintage books as decor elements, a meaningful quote on the matchboxes, a live performance artist sketching the party, and Joel’s favorite 80’s band made it feel very personalized for us. Jenny from JNS Events supported us throughout the planning process. We can’t imagine how we would have done it without her. Highly recommend!
