7 Questions to Help You Decide if You Need a Second Wedding Dress

Having two different wedding dresses for your big day makes perfect sense for some brides. It can be such a fun way to debut your style AND feel comfortable. But it all depends on different factors for you and your wedding day. If you answer “yes” to most of the questions below, perhaps you should consider two dresses for your wedding day.

Do you have an extravagant venue?
An extravagant venue should be paired with an extravagant dress! If your ceremony takes place in a big grand church with a long aisle, imagine yourself walking down the aisle in a beautiful ball gown with a cathedral veil. Your look will tie the whole ceremony together as you make your grand entrance, but perhaps you have a quiet more intimate wedding reception that doesn’t require the full glam look. This is a perfect excuse to justify both a ball gown and a more understated dress. Think Kate Middleton on her wedding day… she went from full on Princess Glam, but wore a simple satin A-line for her reception.

Do you love to dance?
If you’re a bride who loves to dance, chances are you will want to spend part of your reception on the dancefloor. This is a perfect chance for you to put on a shorter or lighter dress that allows you to move comfortably throughout the reception. You will seamlessly be able to go from dancing the night away, to mingling with guests. Bonus… you won’t have to worry about people stepping on your dress all night. Another bonus… you can show off those amazing pair of shoes that have been hiding under your other dress all day.

Will your wedding be over the course of a long day?
If your wedding day has an early ceremony, a big break between ceremony and reception and a late reception, you will be hauling around your dress all day long. You may get a little tired of that dress after you’ve been in it for 6 hours and you’re still taking pictures before the reception. Having a second dress can be a nice option that will make you comfortable during the long day ahead.

Is your wedding in an extreme weather climate?
If your wedding is in a climate that’s very hot or very cold, a second dress may be the perfect answer for you. If it’s hot outside, you may be dying to wear a heavy satin ball gown with a cathedral veil for your ceremony, but want something lighter for the reception so that you’re not sweating. Or perhaps your wedding is in the winter and you want a sparkly dress with a fur shrug for the reception, but want a light airy dress for the ceremony. The temperature and your comfortability can easily sway you towards two dresses.

Are you struggling to decide?
This can totally happen! As you try on wedding dresses and narrow it down, you may feel stuck deciding between two dresses that you’ve fallen in love with. If you can make it work in your budget, why not wear both? If you’re going to treat yourself like a Queen for one day, shouldn’t that day be your wedding day!?

Do you have to follow a dress code in your ceremony venue?
Some ceremony venues require brides to cover their shoulders. This can quickly narrow down the type of dress you can wear. If you find a strapless lace mermaid dress that you love, it may be a HUGE bummer to not be able to wear that for your ceremony. But two dresses can easily solve this. Cover your shoulders with a gorgeous cap sleeve A-line dress for your ceremony, and throw on the strapless lace mermaid for your reception. Don’t let a dress code stop you from wearing the dress of your dreams.

Are you re-wearing your mom/grandmas wedding dress?
In the spirit of nostalgia and family tradition, you may be leaning towards wearing your mom or grandmas traditional wedding dress. I’ve seen this done beautifully but you may not want to be in that dress all day. No matter how classic those dresses are, they tend to be extremely itchy which can irritate your skin. Or perhaps you want to wear the dress because “it’s a tradition” but you’re not completely in-love with it. Wear the dress for the ceremony and then put on the dress you love for the rest of the day. This is a great way to follow a family tradition and make your ceremony extra special, while still getting to express your style.

Two wedding dresses can be a perfect fit for you depending on your needs and your wedding day. As the bride, you should feel like a Queen on your big day and two dresses can allow you to be both stunning and comfortable!

Gorgeous Venue + Dress Designed By Bride = STUNNING SUCCESS

This venue, Haiku Mill, has long been a favorite of mine, so it’s safe to say this wedding caught my attention from the get-go. However, add in this dress – designed by the Bride herself – and we’re talking a whole other level of lovely now. We’re talking total favorite status here. Christine Clark did the locale and the gorgeous couple justice with her perfect pics and this gallery of inspiring images is nothing short of stunning, from their ceremony to their sweet beach portraitsright this way!

Colors

From Christine Clark… Rebecca and Scott’s wedding took place at the always amazing Haiku Mill on Maui. Nestled in the hills of Haiku, the mill is an oasis of overgrown, old world beauty. The ceremony took place in the Mill with a cascade of flowers lining the steps where the vows were spoken. Chandeliers hung from above, adding accents of sparkling glint to the old stone and growth. The cocktail reception was laid out under the shade of the mango tree with lights woven through the branches. The bar featured favorite spirits and signature drinks for guests.

Rebecca, a former wedding gown designer in Australia, was radiant in a dress she designed herself. The beading and flowing tulle were a perfect feature for the Mill’s surroundings and enchanting light. We ended the day with a portrait session at a nearby beach, taking advantage of the sunset light and beautiful Maui ocean. The whole day was a dream, in an absolute fairytale setting. Rebecca and Scott, surrounded by family and friends, reveled in the gorgeous day, glowing with happiness.

8 Tips To Make Thanksgiving Entertaining Easy

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, thanks to its simplicity. It’s a chance to be surrounded by good vibes and (hopefully) good food. It’s one of the more low-key holidays and yet, stress can creep up in unexpected places.

In order to avoid feeling overwhelmed, I asked a handful of event experts to provide their turkey day hacks. Whether it’s your first time hosting Thanksgiving dinner or your 10th, these are the things to keep in mind in order to pull off a memorable time with family and friends.

Melanie Duerkopp

Ask for help.

Consider ordering certain menu items from a local caterer to alleviate some of the stress,” says Christina Kassi of A Fare Extraordinaire. “If you don’t want to cater food, then get your friends and family to bring over dishes, but don’t try and do it all yourself! Just remind the guests that if they bring any food, it needs to be ready to eat.”

Set the mood with music.

Cue up a jazzy soundtrack. “There’s something about mid-century crooners that make any event sound like an elegant holiday party,” says Alessandra Wood, director of style for Modsy. “Miles Davis, Otis Redding, Etta James, or anyone from The Rat Pack creates the nostalgia of a vintage cocktail party, synonymous with the holiday spirit,” she added.

Keep things comfortable.

“Even though the weather is cool, you might want to consider turning down the A/C depending on the amount of guests you are expecting,” says Christina. “For a large guest count, we suggest keeping the temperature at 10 degrees lower than the typical temperature to ensure the house is cool enough when the guests arrive and the temperature remains cool during the evening.”

Greet your guests with something special.

Specialty drinks are a fun way to welcome guests, says Christina. A fall inspired cocktail is the perfect touch for your family and loved ones as they walk through the door. Her favorite is an autumn old-fashioned made with bourbon and a cinnamon and nutmeg infused syrup. Garnish the drink with an orange twist and cinnamon stick. Cristen Faherty, event planner for Cristen & Co, recommends making a big batch the night before and placing it near the entryway. Making it easier for you to serve, day-of.

Jeremiah and Rachel Photography

Dress up your table.

Pumpkins, flowers, candles, fruits, vegetables and garlands are some of the fun decor items Christina uses to dress up tablescapes. “A long, leafy garland made of smilax, ivy or your choice of a vine, works best for long, rectangular tables,” she says. If you opt for the fruit and veggie combo, Christina recommends jewel-toned shades such as eggplant, lemons, red apples, grapes, artichokes and oranges.

Kick your pumpkins up a notch by painting them. “Navy, blush, peach and your choice of a warm metallic hue is a sophisticated palette you can experiment with,” says Christina. Candles work well with any of these options or as stand-alone items. However, Christina warns against using scented candles. “You don’t want them to compete with the amazing smells from your food!”

Provide plenty of food options.

“Thanksgiving is the ultimate farm-to-table meal,” says Dana Klitzberg of Blue Aubergine. “It is a celebration of the bounty of the season and the best kind of family-style feast.” Which means there’s plenty of vegetable options for non-meat eating guests. Seasonal items include squash, pumpkin, brussels sprouts, mushrooms, potatoes and stuffing which can easily be dressed up with apples, pears and nuts.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match.

Lifestyle expert Reyne Hirsch recommends hitting your local antique mall to pick up unique plateware. Look for depression glass plates and glassware. Single plates are very affordable and there are numerous patterns to mix and match. Keep an eye out for various wine or champagne glasses and napkin rings to add to the uniqueness of each place setting.

Have fun!

And don’t forget, the most important part of the evening is the chance to share a meal with loved ones while giving thanks for all of life’s blessings.

Ethereal Bridal Style Inspiration by Italy’s Natural Baths

Inspired by one of her favorite spots from childhood – the Natural Baths of Bagni San FilippoCamilla Cascino set out to create a bridal shoot celebrating the natural beauty of the enchanting location. She recruited Ceciliab to make a bespoke stationery suite and Maura Brandino to design two gowns, all inspired by the waters and imagined specifically for the day, and the resulting shoot is ethereal and oh-so-romantic. Thecablookphotolab and Gattotigre were both there to capture the magic, and it’s all waiting for you in the Vault.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/228181258 600 338]

From Camilla CascinoThe Natural Baths of Bagni San Filippo are a timeless magical place. I knew of this place since childhood, and I have always loved it. I told Darya of Thecablookfotolab about my idea of a bridal inspiration session where the bride was a nymph of the thermal spring.

Guided by this vision, I began to choose the most suitable vendors. The choice of the wedding dresses was of paramount importance. Maura Brandino of “Il sogno atelier” imagined and created an ethereal and refined dress for this project that works in harmony with the color of the thermal water as well as a lace dress with an ancient style but reinterpreted in a modern way.

I then chose Gattotigre, destination wedding videographers that are also sisters. Their videos are fresh and authentic, tailored to each project.

Puscina Flowers are three sisters who have created a farm dedicated to floral design, that’s respectful of nature. They cultivate new varieties of flowers every year that they then use to create beautiful floral arrangements. For this project, they used many wild flowers, combining them with tulips, daisies, and daffodils grown in their greenhouses for bouquets that are an explosion of refinement and originality.

Fantastic Lara Navarrini for makeup and Antonella Macaluso for hair styling created an ethereal and bright look.

My Golden Age created a beautiful bracelet and earrings with gorgeous gray pearls and hand-crafted gold leaves.

For the second dress, I chose a Guinevere Vines crown; Primrose is a tiara that is deliberately reminiscent of the 1920s. Composed of a soft, copper-coated antique gold-plated structure, the magic of its movement is given by the finest quality materials such as crystals, freshwater pearls, ceramic flowers, and leaves made with the jeweler’s gold enamel.

A precious shell contained a botanical, solid perfume, made with passion and patience by La Mia Casa Nel Vento. It’s a fresh fragrance with citrus notes, exotic and Mediterranean flowers, vanilla, and hints of cedar wood.

The table was set up on the shore of the stream, respecting the organic mood. I chose items that respected the neutral color palette – tablecloths, plates, and glasses from Tinekhome, cutlery from Sambonet. From Seidenband I chose the precious silk ribbons for the bouquets, the runner, and the vintage candleholder for the table.

Precious and refined the stationery was made from handcrafted paper and calligraphy by Cecilia Boschi.

A Dreamy Watercolor Inspired Wedding Under the Redwoods

Watercolor details are at the very center of this outdoor wedding in the woods. From a pretty, pastel color palette to painterly stationery and an artist capturing the reception by watercolor, that theme runs through the entire celebration. Spoiler alert…it’s insanely romantic. Pore through Taralynn Lawton’s photographs of this beauty among the redwoods designed by Lovely Time Weddings and Events, with florals by Michelle Lywood, a film by Owl & Tree Films, and our very own SMP collection of bridesmaid dresses by Weddington Way.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/226779375 600 338]

From the Bride…I have always been a fan of pastel colors since I was a little girl. I like the airy and light feeling that naturally comes with pastels. It is also a good reflection of romantic and elegance, this is what I wanted to capture for our big day. The pastel colors and watercolor textures created that romantic and elegant wedding I was looking for with a touch of liveliness as it contrasted with the towering redwood trees.

Nestledown has a magical touch that transports you to a different world and as we instantly fell in love with the venue, we wanted to create a garden in the middle of the forests for our wedding. We had put a lot of planning and effort into the floral design working with Li from Lovely Time and Michelle Lywood as they brought my vision to life. My husband had a vision of wanting to create a spectacular scene for our wedding ceremony and reception, and with the help of our dedicated vendors, the experience was purely magical. I could not have asked for more on our wedding as I think our wedding really reflected our love for each other.

Surprisingly, I was actually really calm on the day of the wedding. I guess maybe from the deepest of my heart that I know that I was gonna marry my better half, and I really looked forward to our future together as husband and wife. If I had to choose my favorite moment, it would be the first look. I was a little nervous when I walked towards Brian for the first look, but I have never seen and expected Brian to be that emotional. The first dance also felt magical as we danced together as husband and wife.

3 Tips for Bringing Pinterest-Worthy Wedding Flowers to Life

While planning your wedding, there are many milestones to look forward to- saying YES to the dress, designing your dream decor and sampling your tasty menu. But I think we can all agree that the best part of the planning process is pinning all those pretty little photos to your Pinterest board, flooded with perfect peonies and gigantic garden roses – are we right?

While you daydream over dahlias, we are here to ensure your floral planning process runs smoothly and you don’t get overwhelmed by orchids and blow your budget on one of the most beautiful (but confusing) parts of the planning process. Below are our top three tips to bring your Pinterest boards to life.

PREPARE YOUR VISION
Before booking consultations with local floral designers, you will want to have a clear direction laid out for your vision. Clean up your Pinterest board and either create your own mood board or hire an event designer to pull together a design blueprint, including color palettes and curated photos, to show your event design vendors.

“In order to best prepare for a floral consultation, brides should have an idea on what colors and style they want to create for their event.” says Cristina Barragan of Posh Peony.

You may also want to bring in a plethora of inspiration to pore over, but Svenja Brotz of Chestnut & Vine says less is more when designing your floral.

“It is fun to be open and experience the process less as a task, but more as an exciting part of shaping the wedding day. It is much like tasting a menu, you sample and enjoy and see, if this fits your palette.”

KNOW YOUR BUDGET

Floral design is an area that can quickly get out of hand. If you’re not careful with budget planning, you will find yourself getting sticker shocked with the high price tag associated with certain stems and season.

“It is helpful to have a number set aside for the floral budget that can be shared with the designer. As much as I wish I could only focus on the design work, the budget is an important part of the conversation and needs to be addressed.” says Brotz.

Barragan states that if you’re not sure on your budget, be sure to ask your floral designer to educate you on the process. “It is really hard to communicate value in such a saturated market these days. That is why it is important for designers to educate their clients on their process, client experience, and how things will unfold leading up to the event so that value is communicated clearly.”

KNOW WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR FLORAL DESIGNER

Have you jumped into the floral designer process but you’re STILL feeling confused? Communication is key, says Barragan.

“All questions should be welcome during a consultation to ensure that both parties know what the vision is and understand the expectations. Some questions to consider: Is my budget reasonable? Do you do more than one event? Are you insured? Have you worked at my venue before? These questions will help brides determine if they are truly getting the client experience they expect and if their florist is qualified to take on their event. “

At the end of the day, Brotz believes it is all about establishing trust in the talented floral designer you ultimately end up hiring.

“It is mostly a matter of establishing a bond of trust. It is my job to convey that and I am here to answer questions. The more transparent the process, the less question marks and worries arise.”

From the Bride…
Our proposal story… Clay had one of my maids of honor, Barbara, come visit us from California and knew that was the perfect weekend to propose. He worked with my mom to make sure we could get up to my parents’ house on Lake Conroe without me being suspicious. After lunch, he maneuvered me towards the dock where a beautiful gazebo overlooks the lake. The gazebo was unfortunately being used for a wedding rehearsal, but Clay improvised (with some help from my dad and brother) and the proposal went off without a hitch right on the lake’s edge. Afterwards there was a surprise party with some close family and friends, put together by my mom, maids of honor and bridesmaids.

Our overall “inspiration” for our wedding design/decor was to have an elegant, fun wedding with rustic, Texas-inspired details and pops of color throughout.

Some unique, special wedding details included:
– We tried to incorporate both our families and backgrounds throughout the whole wedding. We chose a beautiful rustic barn venue which corresponded to my husband’s upbringing on a ranch outside of Austin, TX. It was the only venue we toured and I knew it was perfect as soon as we saw it. The bright bridesmaids’ dresses and colorful flowers represented my mom’s Bermudian side of the family.

This also carried over into what we served with a seafood bar and dark n’ stormy cocktails (for my Bermuda side) and Shiner beer, mini tacos/margaritas during cocktail hour and Whataburger inspired late night snacks to represent our love for Texas.

We also pulled in our respective colleges (Texas A&M and Ohio State) by having custom cornhole boards made for cocktail hour, college inspired cookie favors, and of course, having the band play our fight songs. We also had a beautiful Texas A&M groom’s cake the night before at our rehearsal dinner.

It was really important that everybody have plenty to eat and drink and have a great time throughout the whole weekend. We had welcome drinks when people arrived off the shuttles to help with the Texas heat, an outdoor photobooth station when guests needed a break, a band and DJ to keep people on the dance floor, and of course plenty to drink and eat all night, with some goody bags so people could take extra dessert favors to go. My parents also hosted a brunch at their house on Lake Conroe the next morning which was a great way to have additional conversations with our family and friends without us feeling as rushed as the night before.

My husband did not want to see me before the ceremony, but I wanted to see him, so we did a first “touch” with me peeking around the corner to see him and exchange some letters. It really helped me with my nerves and we got some great pictures beforehand.

We wrote our own vows and I am so glad we did. It really made it that much more personal and special to us. It was also great to have some laughs when we realized we both referenced our love for college football and animals in our respective speeches

My favorite moments include getting ready with my bridesmaids all morning at the venue; it definitely helped me relax and enjoy the moments leading up to the wedding, getting to see the venue all decorated before the ceremony started, our first dance (a Texas two-step of course!), and just taking it all in during the reception while guests ate. My dad’s speech was also a special moment because he really surprised me with how sweet and funny it was!

Finally, seeing my husband’s face when I changed into my second dress (which was a complete surprise to him) was wonderful, and made it a lot easier to dance the rest of the night away!

My advice for future brides/grooms:
– Start planning as soon as you can, there are always little things you can do throughout the first couple months to help ensure the last two aren’t crazy packed. Stay organized and make/keep a lot of lists, it helps make you feel like you’re on top of it! If your budget allows it, splurge for great quality photography and videography. It was been several months since the wedding and I’m so glad I have these things to help us remember our wonderful day for years to come!

Most of all, try and relax and have fun. There will always be little things that “go wrong”, but in the end, nobody notices and it certainly won’t be what you remember at the end!

A Beautiful Love Refined Over Time

The thing that really sets my heart a pitter patter is the true meaning of marriage. As much as I adore a gorgeous wedding, it’s what comes after that really counts, which is why anniversary sessions like this one in France that celebrate a love refined over time absolutely steal my heart. Julie Paisley Photography captured this beautiful couple on their seventh anniversary – the gorgeous photos say it all.

From Julie Paisley PhotographyWhen you are in the wedding industry, it’s easy to forget to that you need pictures too. Lauren and Tim are talented wedding photographers and have become some of my dearest friends over the past few years. When we traveled together to France to teach a workshop a few months ago, Lauren asked me to do an anniversary session to celebrate their 7 years of being married. Of course I said “YES” right away. I mean, these two are nearly perfect and made my job so easy.

As a wedding photographer, I shoot couples at their happiest on the best day of their life. A wedding brings so much joy, but lately I’ve been finding that shooting anniversary sessions is such a wonderful experience. There is something so special about a couple who has been together for several years. The “newness” has worn off and the level that they connect on is different than it was on their wedding day. They’ve been through good and bad, happiness and sadness, and their love is still powerful but different. Marriage needs to be celebrated all the time, not just on the day you say “I do”.

The Ultimate Guide to Addressing Your Wedding Invitations

You may or may not have noticed we love all things paper around here, but when it comes to the invitation logistics? Well, that can be tricky territory. Learning the right way to address an invitation is one of our top FAQs, so we pulled together this quick how-to and video tutorial to make sure your invites make the perfect (and prettiest!) first impression.

If a couple is married, they should be addressed by his first name and their last name. However, if the couple is unmarried, you should include the first and last name of both guests. NOTE: This is the more traditional approach to addressing invitations but modern brides are now opting to include both names of the married couple. We encourage you to use whatever combination of names you’d like.

Be sure to always spell out words like “and”, “street”, and “avenue” fully. This makes an invitation feel more formal and thoughtful! In addition, you should spell out the entire state name on each envelope.

Address the inner envelope containing more details about the wedding with the first and last names of the heads of household, followed by the first names of all invited in that party (including children).

Your invitations are now ready to be sent! Make sure to watch our video below for the full tutorial!

We’d Get Up at 4am For An Engagement Shoot as Gorgeous as This

Four o’clock in the morning is always a tough pill to swallow… unless you’re having your engagement pics taken by Sophie Epton at sunrise with the skyline of NYC behind you. Sophie snapped these two as they strolled across the Brooklyn Bridge, and with the city to themselves, they ventured to Washington Park to continue the fun. With sights to see and sweet moments galore, we have quite the gallery, definitely worth spending some quality time in. Join us there, right this way

From Sophie Epton Photography… Ray and Wes are some of the nicest clients we’ve ever had, and when they asked us to photograph their engagement session in NYC (the city where they started their life together) we couldn’t wait to pack our bags and jet off to the Big Apple to document this special occasion!

While getting up at 4am is never fun, it’s always worth it for the shoot, especially in a big city! We were all up bright and early on a brisk June morning right as the sun was peeking up over the Brooklyn Bridge… and it felt like we had the entire city to ourselves. We shot at all of Ray and Wes’ favorite areas… DUMBO, the Brooklyn Bridge, Washington Park, and even managed to get in a few photos of the two of them in the street while taxis sped by in the hectic energy of the urban jungle. Ending our shoot at the beautiful High Line by the Chelsea Market, Ray had us all cracking up talking about how “he could finally eat a bagel now that the shoot was over.” Ray and Wes, we adore you and our time together in the city… can’t wait for the big day!

Inspired by 18th Century Opulence and Lake Como Views

If you are considering a destination wedding or simply a celebration with European vibes, then this Italian shoot will totally seal the deal. Held at Villa Sola Cabiati on the shores of Lake Como, it pairs 18th century opulence with wildly romantic details planned by Italian Weddings and Events, lush florals by Dario Benvenuti and images captured by Jacqui Cole. Get inspired by la dolce vita with the full gallery here!

This editorial took place at the stunning Villa Sola Cabiati along the shores of Tremezzo, Lake Como. The Villa has recently opened its’ doors to the guests of Grand Hotel Tremezzo and now offers the opportunity for couples to wed within its’ 18th century opulence. Stepping inside of the Villa truly takes you back in time as you glance around the original fresco covered walls and endless Italian art that lines the corridors. Unsurprisingly, the Villa was the main source of inspiration for this shoot. Dusty blues and soft peach tones were pulled from the fresco wall coverings and created a romantic setting for the shoot. To be sure we maintained the quintessential Italian beauty of Villa Sola, original pieces were included in the tablescape. The stunning cream and blue upholstered chairs are original to the Villa and even the plates feature the Serbelloni family crest. Dario Benvenuti created a stunning scene with the floral design. Endless vines and florals drape over sheet music, candelabras and organic fruit. Our couple spent the day getting ready together in a suite overlooking the Como waters, standing on the incredible floral-lined steps for the ceremony and sailing away on a vintage boat as Mr&Mrs. Every image is set in breathtaking beauty but we really wanted to go beyond the scenery and capture the feeling that one gets when they’re in Lake Como. This small part of the world captures the heart of each person who is lucky enough to visit and to be able to say ‘i do’ in such a setting would simply be magic.

What Happens When One Bride-to-Be Goes to New York Bridal Fashion Week

It’s hard to put into words the magic, beauty and chaos that is New York Bridal Fashion Week. An intoxicating mix of gorgeous gowns, inspiring people, lots of bubbly and an excited energy buzzing about, it’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And this year, we partnered with Allure Bridals to give one of you lucky loves the chance to experience it for yourself! From a stay at the incredible Innside by Meliá New York NoMad to an appointment at Kleinfeld to a front-row seat at some of the hottest runway shows, read on to get the deets on Nicole’s incredible weekend!

Photography: Heather Waraksa + Greg Finck

Over the course of the six days of New York Bridal Fashion Week, we shuffled around Manhattan, going to more than 50 runway shows, presentations and appointments. In short, we saw a lot of drop-dead-gorgeous wedding dresses. It was overwhelming, but for our beautiful winner and bride-to-be, attending a couple of runway shows was “a great way to kick off my bridal weekend adventure in NYC! It was a fun way for me to see dress styles live as opposed to on paper!”

Photography: Heather Waraksa + Greg Finck

Next up on Nicole’s itinerary? A trip to Kleinfeld where she said “Yes to the Dress!” thanks to a little help from a generous $1,500 dress credit and Kleinfeld’s own consultant extraordinaire, Shay.  “Kleinfeld was simply amazing — it’s hard to put the experience into words that will do it justice,” said Nicole. “Let’s just say, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be the bride I’ve always dreamed of being if I hadn’t gotten the chance to visit Kleinfeld!”

Incredible, right?! Nicole certainly thought so, saying “Words can’t describe how thankful I am to have won this sweepstakes! It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and my mom and I had such an amazing time!”

9 Real-Life Couples Share What It Takes To Build a Love That Lasts

Getting married is a memorable milestone full of possibility. It’s the start of a couple’s journey as they build their life together. But, it’s going to take more than a memory of a fun wedding to get to 25 years and beyond. Inspired by the Obama’s recent anniversary celebrations, here are nine real-life couples who share what it takes to build a love that lasts.

Fabrice Tranzer

Celebrate the imperfections

“Accept that it is not always going to be perfect. It is a journey together through good and bad times. Learn how to compromise. Life throws curveballs and it’s important to work through them together. These curveballs bring you closer together as you learn to love even harder because you’re doing all of this together. Big adventures are fun (like a trip to Italy) but don’t forget, the little things (like picking flowers for your home) are too.” Grace Guerrero and Jim Zwit married 30 years.

Learn to laugh

“Humor is key! Don’t take yourself or your spouse too seriously. It’s a choice to be light or annoyed. Be silly together and laugh like little kids goofing around. Look for the humor, even in the dark times.” Carol and John Tingwall, celebrating 41 years in December

Fight fair

“There will be fights. When this happens, use all your self control to not do something life changing (like walking out). Once done, some things can never be taken back. Sometimes you need to walk away literally and figuratively.” Vicki H. Buzard married 40 years in January

Lauren Kinsey Fine Art Weddings

Be patient.

“Patience is key. Think before speaking.” Alejandra Moran married 25 years.

Share interests

“Participate in each other interests. We make deals with each other. We say “I’ll go along with you on this, but then you have to go along with me on that.” We frequently venture outside of our comfort zone, expand our interests and have more shared experiences. We are both surprised by the joy we get out of activities we previously said we had no interest in doing. Now at 72, we are very different than the 19-year-olds that started this journey. By doing so much together, it’s helped us grow closer together.” Josie Hamilton, married 53 years.

Vicki Grafton Photography

Forgiveness is key

“We bring out the best in each other, however, we also know that there are times when we bring out the worst in each other, too. As a result, forgiveness is an important component. Love and forgiveness always prevail.” Andrea and Guy Banicki, married 43 years.

Look for a life partner

“Pick the person who is a good companion and cares about making the marriage succeed. The relationship has to be really, really important to both people and they need to devote time to building and strengthening the relationship.” Sheila Urman, married 49 years.

Rebecca Yale Photography

Accept each other as you are

“Appreciate your spouse and accept them the way they are. Neither person is perfect. Be prepared to accept your differences and make the best of.” Marisel A. Hernandez, married 32 years

Love hard

“The most important thing is love, because love never ends.” Grasilda and Paul Petkus, married 33 years.

A Stationery Suite That Sets the Stage Perfectly for this Colorful Texas Wedding

I can’t stop staring; I’m downright obsessed with this stationery. The colors, the florals, it’s all just so, so good – major props to Alex Leigh Franklin! This suite set the stage for a colorful, beautiful bloom-filled Texas wedding captured in completion by Allen Tsai that is one delightful detail after another. See all the perfect pics in our gallery right this way (and get ready to get pinning pic after pic to those Pinterest boards)!

Event Venue

From the Bride… Mauricio and I wanted our wedding to have a casual vibe that incorporated elements of nature and natural light. The moment we visited the Laurel, we knew it would be the perfect place for our wedding. Having the venue in Grapevine, Texas gave a sense of both destination and home. Our favorite part of the Laurel was the chapel, with its large windows and wood ceiling beams, that gave our wedding the touch of traditional we were looking for.

The contributions from family and friends played a major role in helping our wedding be extra special. My sister, Alex Leigh Franklin, created all our paper goods including the save-the-dates, wedding invitations, ceremony programs and menus. She incorporated hand painted Laurel leaves and flowers, like peonies, in all the designs. Another good friend and talented artist (@nrfcalligraphy) addressed all our wedding invitations in beautiful calligraphy script. We made sure to incorporate personal touches into the wedding, too, including my grandmother’s earrings that I wore, and a cameo pendant pinned on my bouquet which belonged to my grandfather. Mauricio’s grandmother even serenaded us with a Spanish love song at the reception.

Our florist, from Everly Alaine Florals, brought to life my sister’s designs by creating stunning displays full of greenery and an array of pink, white, dark red and orange flowers. It was also important for us to find a fine art photographer to capture our wedding style and help the day progress in a timely manner. Allen Tsai did an amazing job using natural light and real film to capture all the big and small moments of our wedding! An amazing team of vendors (and supportive family and friends!) was key to bringing the aesthetics of our wedding to life!

The Views From This D.C. Wedding Are Iconic

When I visited the Daughters of the American Revolution headquarters in D.C. for the first time, I was in awe by the grandeur of the architecture and the view of the Washington Monument, yet the space somehow still felt intimate. I couldn’t stop imagining the beautiful weddings that I knew must take place beneath the portico. Now I no longer have to imagine them, because Annalyse and Sam’s timeless affair blew away even my sweetest daydreams. Luckily for me, Joey Kennedy photographed every detail of their elegant wedding, from the Jenny Yoo clad bridesmaids to the tables topped with Mallory Joyce‘s floral creations.

After graduating from Auburn University, Annalyse moved to Washington, D. C. to pursue a career on Capitol Hill. Sam was a year ahead and already working in politics following his time at the University of Virginia. In 2012, both Sam and Annalyse hit the campaign trail and traveled to Ohio. It was in Cuyahoga County where they met and struck up a friendship that would soon turn into something more. When they returned to the city, Sam asked Annalyse to dinner. That was the beginning of an adventure highlighted with farm trips, Florida visits, graduate school study, promotions, and Auburn games. Sam proposed at his family farm in Pennsylvania early one morning in October of 2015.

As a member of the Capitol Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and after visiting the venue, Annalyse and Sam fell in love with the architectural impact and elegance of the one of a kind space. Despite the proximity to the White House and National Mall, the portico feels intimate.

The wedding day began with an outdoor bridal shoot in Georgetown full of garden greenery, captured in perfect light and detail by Joey Kennedy. The bridal party made their way to Christ Church Georgetown, the church where both the groom’s parents and grandparents were wed, before heading to the DAR. The vision for the elegant and romantic DAR building was brought to life with stunning design and florals arranged to complement the light, airy space by Mallory Joyce Designs. The bride and groom surprised guests with caricature artists during cocktail hour and dined at tables adorned with garden-fresh floral arrangements in greens, whites, and soft pinks. Guests danced the night away overlooking the Washington Monument!

The Fun Never Stopped at This Key West Destination Wedding!

Glen and Kailey knew exactly what they wanted for their wedding – a southern-style celebration with lots of time to enjoy family and friends. Simply You Weddings helped them plan a full week of activities for their Key West destination wedding, from a welcome reception to a beach volleyball tournament to a sunset cruise. But the event to remember was, of course, the wedding ceremony and reception, captured by Finch Photography. From the special musical performance by friends to the late night dancing courtesy of Bay Kings Band, we know this celebration is one their guests will never forget.

From the Bride… Glen and I have been to over 30 weddings together in our five years of dating, so we had a pretty good idea of what we liked and didn’t like already. Some of the weddings we enjoyed the most were the ones where we were able to spend more than just a day with the wedding party and really got to know their family and friends.

We wanted to choose a city that would entice guests to stay more than a day and was a place that offered activities that would appeal to a variety of people. Our hope was that our wedding would allow for everyone to get to know each other, make new friends, and ultimately become one cohesive group as we became one in marriage. We wanted a place that provided ample opportunities to be able to get quality time with everyone. After one visit to Key West, we knew this was just the place to make this happen, with its history, beautiful sunsets, ocean activities, and fun vibes on Duval Street.

Once we chose Key West, we started planning all the events for the week. The women in Glen’s family always host a welcome party at the family weddings, and they wanted the same for us. We wanted this to be a casual meet and greet for our families and friends. Our hotel accommodations had a great back yard courtyard and patio, so it was the perfect place for people to “come as they were,” enjoy a few drinks and appetizers, and make some new friends.

Glen loves volleyball, and his mom was a collegiate volleyball player, so he wanted to have a beach day that included a volleyball tournament with customized tank tops, koozies, and tumblers. Higgs Beach was the perfect spot because it had volleyball courts, beach rentals, and a cute restaurant that let us reserve the patio. We decided to have this event on Saturday after the wedding so it was a day we could really relax and everyone could let loose. For Saturday night, we decided a sunset cruise would be a great last hurrah to wind down the wedding activities. The Fury Commotion on the Ocean cruise was a perfect fit for our group with its live music, drinks, food, and beautiful views.

Our hotel accommodations were one of our favorite choices. The Light House Court was the place we stumbled upon and stayed at on our first visit to Key West. It’s in the perfect location, across from the Hemmingway House, a block from Duval Street, and down the road from the beaches (and it ended up being close to our ceremony and reception sites). This is a renovated estate, which makes each room unique. It’s a quaint place with a small pool, great mojito bar (Kailey’s favorite), a courtyard with cornhole, and a daily breakfast served outside accompanied by the local hens and roosters. We envisioned our friends and family having breakfast together and sitting by the pool.

When thinking about the theme, we really didn’t want your typical destination wedding with flashy details. We wanted both the destination and the traditions we were raised with  – a southern wedding, just in a beach city. We chose neutral colors, with taupe bridesmaids’ dresses and black tuxes, white florals with greenery, and accents of gold. The head table was made of four farm tables pushed together with a eucalyptus garland runner and mercury glass votives scattered down the center. The guest and cocktail tables were simple with white linens and hand made arrangements by the groom’s mother and friends featuring greenery halos, mercury glass votives, and ivy tie backs.

My dress was a custom design by Anna Maier. I had found two dresses that I loved, and they were both by Maier, so I was able to combine what I liked about the two and then add some other details. From the color to the lace and the actual fit, I was able to pick everything out. I liked the look of an off the shoulder dress but also wanted an open back; many stores told me I couldn’t have both. However, the girls at White Dresses Boutique helped me see how I could make my vision come to life. Once we got the dress in, White Dresses connected me with Altered Heart Alterations who helped me design the back and create the soft shoulder look that I loved.

Family and tradition are important to us and were incorporated throughout the wedding. Glen’s wedding band had belonged to my great grandfather and was accompanied by the original box. My mom surprised me with a second wedding band, solid gold and created from a variety of family jewelry. I was also presented with a necklace, repurposed from a ring that my father had given my mother.

Glen’s grandfather had fought in WWII and always said that Psalm 23 helped him make it through. Since then, the Bible verse has remained special to Glen’s family. We had a hand painted welcome sign made with a portion of Psalm 23 on it to honor him.

It was important for both of us to be married in a Methodist church, and we were lucky to find a beautiful Methodist church that allowed us to be there. The reception location was not at the beach, but at the Historic Truman Little White House (Glen’s family has ties to President Truman, so that made it even more special). The lawns are beautiful with green grass and overhanging trees, and the neighborhood provided the privacy we wanted (we didn’t want random people watching our wedding from a restaurant or patio or walking through in their swimsuits).

Our first dance was sung and played by two of our best friends, Ken and Cheyenne. They not only sang the first dance song, but they also sang and played the mother/son and father/daughter songs. The father/daughter song was an original that was written by Cheyenne.

We knew it would be pretty steamy for the reception, but we wanted guests to be as comfortable as possible, so we served a mojito during cocktail hour to help cool everyone down as well as provided hand cut wooden fans that guests could use throughout the night. Our friends love to dance, so we had to have a good band. We decided against the typical beach band and instead went with a 6-piece Motown band. In college, we loved Motown bands best, and Bay Kings did not disappoint. It was the perfect mix of Motown favorites along with today’s catchy hits. We may have all been a little sweaty, but that didn’t stop anyone from being on the dance floor all night.
