This Amalfi Coast Stunner Was Planned in 4 Short Months!

When Allie emailed Brenda Babcock of Italia Celebrations in hopes of planning her destination wedding on the Amalfi Coast in four short months, she never could have dreamed it would come together this perfectly. From the opulent florals by Orazio for Italia Celebrations to the insanely beautiful Marchesa gown (I’m just a little obsessed with it!) to the stunning pops of blue, every single detail was sheer perfection. Trust me, loves, there’s no better way to start a Monday than with this gallery by Emm and Clau.

From the Bride… When we started planning the wedding in April, the most important thing was to have close friends and family at our side. My husband, Andrew, was just about to begin NHL hockey playoffs, and so he wanted me to deal with all things wedding related since he couldn’t dedicate himself to anything else at that moment. Having the responsibility of planning for the both of us made me stop to consider what he would want more than if he had been at my side planning along with me.

Location was key for us, and the prior year, we had the most amazing afternoon and dinner in the town of Ravello. We strolled through the tiny, ancient streets and gardens taking it all in. The night ended with a delicious meal at the Belmond Caruso. It was a perfect night in a perfect town. Discussing this with Brenda and mentioning our desire to have the wedding on the sea, she suggested having the wedding there, which is also one of her preferred locations. The memories, sights, and sounds came rushing back to me, and I knew immediately that it was the perfect place for us. We couldn’t wait to share it with our friends and families, who we knew would love it as much as we had! It was easy for us to have a destination wedding because, there was never one location that made sense. We knew we would have guests traveling from Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Israel, Australia, and the UK for our wedding.

It was really important to make each and every guest feel welcome, and so it was important to us to have three days of events where we included all guests. They had all travelled so far to be with us. We had a casual welcome dinner the first day, the wedding on the second day, and the third day we spent by the sea relaxing with all of our guests at The Clubhouse, which is a private club carved into the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast that goes straight down to the sea where we could go for a swim or take out one of their small boats. The day was amazing and may be the most talked about part of the wedding to this day, months later.

When planning the wedding, I wanted to use local vendors as much as possible. I found my wedding dress 15 minutes down the road from where I live; I designed the invitations together with a local California woman who designs greeting cards whose contact I got from my neighbor. I knew I didn’t want to fly photographers and videographers over to Italy, and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the local ones that Brenda suggested and hired on our behalf. All the vendors that she suggested and hired and all those on her team were exceptional and a pleasure to be around. The photographers, hair and makeup team, musicians, florists, caterers…everyone did a wonderful job. We LOVED Monsignor John who celebrated our wedding in the Catholic church and hope to have him baptize our children in the future. We can’t thank everyone enough.

It was important that the wedding reflected the particular tastes and style of Andrew and myself, which the intimate setting, eclectic decor, and amazing food did, 100%. The wedding planning was a dream because of Brenda Babcock of Italia Celebrations. She made our vision come alive and on such short notice. Aside from being visually everything I had hoped for, she and her team organized everything impeccably. This allowed us and our parents to spend all of our time with our guests, and so we were all able to relax and enjoy the thrilling three days without any stress!

I now suggest to people that they plan their weddings in just four months! The only down side to having the destination wedding was not having our chocolate Labrador, Charlie, at our side. Since we had included him on our invitations, he was always there with us in spirit, too.

3 Ways to Make Your Guests Feel Comfortable at Your Wedding

There are so many emotions and excitement that surround your wedding day, including all the excitement form your loving guests! With so many moving parts involved, it is easy to get caught up in all the tiny details and overlook the smallest of details that welcome your guests.

You and your partner have carefully curated an invite list and each guest has planned out their day or weekend to share in your wonderful evening. Making them feel comfortable and welcome will create an atmosphere of love and excitement you always dreamed would surround your wedding.

Greet your Guests with a Beverage

Whether it be a glass of bubbling champagne or a chilled lemonade, this is a touch that is sure to welcome your guests to your soiree. Having a fall/winter wedding? Opt for a warm beverage that will warm your guests’ hands as they enter your venue. They will be especially sure to thank you if you are having a portion of your event outdoors.

Involve your Guests in the Fun

Creative ways of including your guests in the day’s events or moments can mean a lot to your guests who may not know each other. If you are having a weekend event, such as your rehearsal dinner on Friday and your wedding on Saturday, make it a “the more, the merrier” occasion and invite all of your guests coming into town that day to your rehearsal dinner party. This will act as a huge ice breaker for guests on both the bride and the groom’s side to meet and mingle.

Be Inclusive in Planning your Seating Charts

Head tables can be the center of your reception vision and include your closest friends such as members of your wedding party, but they can often feel exclusive. If your maid of honor invites her new boyfriend and he knows no one, yet there isn’t room for him at the head table, it can become quite an uncomfortable evening for him. You want to make sure everyone feels welcome and thought of individually. If you opt for a head table, make sure to make room for each member of your wedding party and their plus-ones to ensure a fun moment for everyone involved! As far as the remaining tables are concerned, be strategic and thoughtful when arranging your guests if you are having a seated dinner.

Whatever elements you implement into your affair will be sure to elevate the overall energy of your event and will leave you and your guests overcome with joy and excitement in celebration of a wonderful moment.

Say “I Do” in an Austrian Castle

High Emotion Weddings is on a mission to showcase the many beautiful options for weddings in Austria, and this princess-worthy editorial photographed by Daniela Porwol is but one! The concept was inspired by the words written by the heir-apparent to the Austro-Hungarian empire in the late 18th century to his wife: “I would do anything for you. I will forever love you!” Romantic, right? From the gorgeous castle venue, Schoss Eckartsau (the home of the very same heir-apparent) to the contributions of many talented Austrian vendors, we cannot help but get swept up in this fairytale shoot.

I chose a beautiful baroque castle, about one hour drive from Vienna, to show couples one of the different options this beautiful country has to offer when it comes to celebrating love in a romantic, luxury setting. This time I decided to create an exquisite love story in a history-filled imperial jewel: Schloss Eckartsau. We were inspired by the love story of Franz Ferdinand – the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne – and Sophie Chotek, and a letter he wrote to her in this castle, ending with this beautiful words:
“I would do anything for you. I will forever love you!”

We chose to immortalize these words on leather and incorporated leather from Mike’s Creative Factory, beautifully calligraphed by Tintenfuchs, into our stationery concept, in remembrance of the castle also being a hunting chateau for the imperial family. We decided on a blush, brown, and copper color palette at dinner, with pops of coral and orange to adorn that majestic staircase. Our bride, wearing an amazing peach and crème beaded dress by Ukrainian designer Oksana Mukha and matching headpieces by Viennese designer Edita Rosenrot, takes us on a trip to a previous century, when ladies were strolling through the castle park whispering poems of love behind lacy parasols and fans.

There’s Beauty in the Tension of This Wedding Editorial

It’s all about the tension between hot and cold in this Tuscan inspiration shoot, captured by Thecablookfotolab and Gattotigre – and it proves without a doubt there’s truth to the saying, “There is beauty in the tension.” The Tuscan Wedding carefully crafted cool and calming settings around the villa using bluish hues like in the incredible creation by Tuscan Wedding Cakes and then added that spark of fire with red accents, often in the arrangements by Flowers Living or through the warmth radiated by the bride and groom. A scroll through this gallery, and you’ll feel all that beautiful and irresistible tension yourself!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/231317843 600 338]

Many young girls dream of their wedding day since their childhood, however I don’t think you could ever dream of a wedding location this spectacular. The Tuscan Wedding had an extremely particular vision for this lovely shoot, and with help from Darya Kamalowa, an excellent photographer who lives in Milan, Italy, they accomplished their goal. We loved her vision for this shoot, and it is always a pleasure working with her.

This shoot is full of colors, creativity, and inspiration for a dream wedding in the hills of Tuscany. These photos take place at Il Borro located in the heart of Tuscany, however not far from the city of Florence. This villa has it all and will take your breath away the moment you enter. From the stationery to the food to the table setting, every little detail has a consistent color theme. The Tuscan Wedding wanted to create a unique feel, including cold and warm colors in their shoot. They used blues, grays, and greens to create a cool tone, sprinkling a pop of cherry red to create a hot tone. In all areas of this shoot you can find this exclusive color theme.

Let’s begin with the stationery created by White Flowers Calligraphy. The Tuscan Wedding wanted to keep this part simple, using white cards and envelopes with light blue text. Placing cool colors around the stationery caused the two red cherries laying on the stationery to really pop. They then brought this shoot to a bedroom filled with red, green, and blue. Small accents of red were spread around the room, while the wallpaper had small accents of blue and green. The model has beautiful bright blue eyes, helping the color theme to stay consistent. This room brought a rustic feel to the shoot.

Flowers Living did an outstanding job with all the flower displays for this shoot; we can always count on them. The Bride’s bouquet continued this color theme; red and white flowers with green leaves were tied together with a light blue and red sash. Again even in the bouquet, where you can only find a few red flowers, they continue to stand out the most. The groom matches the bride’s details as well. His boutonniere includes white flowers sprouting out of a green steam, a small red flower, all tied together with a light blue ribbon.

The scenery changes as they bring the bride and groom into a more contemporary setting. As you enter your eyes are immediately drawn to the bright blue pool located in the middle of the room. The cake, designed by Tuscan Wedding Cake, stands on a grey table in front of a dark wooden door. We are always impressed by Tuscan Wedding Cake’s designs and creativity. This cake matches the room, being all white with a gorgeous blue detail. This blue detail includes light and dark blues matching the swimming pool. The blue stones get darker in the middle of the design causing the cake to look cut into. Inside the room, you can find accents of blue and green, staying consistent. This is the first time we do not see a pop of cherry red. However the bride and groom’s romantic tension takes place of the bright red color; they create a very warm feeling that stands out in this cool, calming setting.

Blending Caribbean Vibes With a California Zip Code

I’m 100% convinced it’s not possible to love a wedding any more than this beauty. Combining the bride’s Caribbean roots with the couple’s California zip code, this celebration is a mix of vibrant color, gorgeous nods to heritage and fun, modern details all planned by Sweet Emilia Jane, along with florals by The Little Branch and gorgeous images by Rebecca Yale. From leaf signage to a healthy dose of fuchsia, get inspired by an affair filled with modern, tropical vibes.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/185890176 600 338]

Bridgette and Alex were married on August 6, 2016 at a private estate in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. The bride and groom are both software engineers and met in 2011 while building custom animation software for the film industry. They worked together on How to Train Your Dragon 2, King Fu Panda 2, Puss and Boots and more. The bride currently works at Dreamworks and the groom at Flipagram.

Bridgette and Alex are fun, adventurous and have a love for good food and drink. Sweet Emilia Jane highlighted those aspects of their relationship throughout the wedding design. They incorporated Bridgette’s Caribbean heritage in a way that was elegant and modern. Every detail from the invitations to the place settings had a modern tropical vibe with bright splashes of color. From the guestbook and cake flanked by oversized palm leaves to the palm leaf and rose adorned arch, the wedding felt distinctly unique and tropical. The lush landscape, bright pops of bougainvillea and incredible architecture were the perfect backdrop for the day. Elements found around the property were tied into the design from the tropical leaf signage to the bougainvillea on the wedding cake.

The bride wore a custom Sarah Nouri gown and placed white flowers in her afro on one side and braided the other with delicate pink flowers tucked underneath. The groom wore a blue suit and Shinola watch, gifted to him as a surprise by the bride the morning of the wedding. Instead of a traditional wedding party the bride and groom had their large families serve as their attendants, the bride’s three brothers as her bridesmen, and the groom’s four older brothers and sister as his groomsmen (and woman). The groom’s niece and nephew served as ring-bearer and flower-girl and the other many nieces and nephews got together for a large group picture and helped get the party started dancing the night away.

The bride chose to walk by herself down the aisle while a guitarist sang All of Me, meeting her dad at the very end for a hug before handing her off to her groom. The couple wrote their own vows and finished the ceremony by jumping the broom, which had been decked out in flowers to fit the Caribbean theme.

Since they are foodies and cocktail-lovers the food from Root Cellar and drinks from Snake Oil had to not only taste good, but look good. The bride and groom had four signature cocktails, two named after themselves, that guests sipped throughout the evening. Cocktail Hour took place at the back of the estate and guests enjoyed passed hors d’ouerves and a market table with fresh fruits, charcuterie and cheeses. At the end of the cocktail hour Root Cellar surprised the guests with a whole roasted pig, Caribbean style, which had been cooking all day.

The escort card table was set next to the dining area with each guests name written on a leaf and placed in wooden bowls full of coffee beans. Guests were welcomed down to the tables as the sun began to set, which were decked out in blue Ikat tablecloths with bright blooms and string lights above. Each guest had a piece of sea glass on their seat serving as their place card and a coconut shell with the salad course awaiting them. It was the perfect way to tie in the overall design of the day into the design of the food in a way that was unique and unexpected. The groom surprised their guests by serenading his new bride to Elton John’s, Your Song, during dinner followed by traditional Caribbean music that got everyone up and dancing between courses. After dinner guests returned to the house’s patio for cake and more dancing. The bride and groom’s entire family ended up jumping on top of the fountain on the patio and dancing the night away atop it.

Stop Holiday Shopping Until You Read These 5 Tips

Raise your hand if you still have some holiday shopping to do?! C’mon, be honest. I myself have a handful of people to cross off the ol’ list… you know, the ones who are the hardest to shop for so you procrastinate until the very last minute. That’s where gift boxes always come in clutch. I think it’s the best gift really, even if you’re an early shopper. Pick a simple theme and stock it up with a few fun items! This lavender-inspired box from Salt & Grove would delight just about any receiver. Plus, shop owner’s Katie and Sarah are giving us 5 amazing tips on how to master your gift-giving skills this season!

Shop small and local! Being a great consumer is an especially wonderful thing to be around the holidays. By shopping at places where the items have been carefully curated, you are not only supporting a small business, you are purchasing something that is well-designed and made, which makes for an awesome gift. Gift-giving should be a thoughtful process… your loved ones will truly appreciate the effort you put forth when they open such a special gift, something so perfect just for them! You are also more likely to be gifting a longer lasting and better quality product.

Create a theme for individual gifts. This is something really fun to do, especially when creating a gift box or basket for a holiday gift. You can get really creative here, and a theme can start with a simple idea. For example, we created this lavender-themed gift box, which could be perfect for so many people…someone going through a stressful time, a new parent, or someone who just really loves the calming scent of lavender. Our gift box contains several lavender themed items, from a bar of soap, to actual lavender, to a tea towel with an illustration of our favorite herb. You can take this concept anywhere with any theme. Again, you are creating a well-thought out gift, which is the best kind to receive!

Make a budget. Shopping around the holidays can be a bit frantic, and if you are not careful, you can overspend just for the sake of making sure you have everyone crossed off your list. Being organized early in the holiday season with a list of everyone you need to shop for and what you want to spend for each person is a smart way of staying the path when it comes to your shopping. It will also help you feel successful and accomplished as you gradually (and calmly) conquer that shopping list!

Come up with a wrapping theme for all of your gifts! You can come up with some really fun ideas for your holiday wrapping (use Pinterest and blogs for inspiration), and once you have an idea in mind, you can wrap all of your holiday gifts with the same components, with a bit of added variety between each gift. For example, you can wrap all of your gifts in kraft paper, bakers twine, some simple gift tags, and varying sprigs of holiday greens on each package. Not only is this adorable, but it will save you money and space. All the wrapping paper out there is cute, but you don’t need it all! You will look like the most organized and creative person when you show up to the holiday party with the cutest packages under the tree!

Send holiday cards! In a world full of emails, texts and stories, snail mail has sadly lost its place. Receiving a card in the mail and even better, one with a hand-written note can be just as special as a wrapped gift. Sending cards to loved ones and perhaps someone you have lost touch with can be a darling sentiment.

Moving on to groomsmen gifts! How cool is this stainless steel growler? Beer aficionados will appreciate a personalized growler of their own.

I know my fiancé’s groomsmen will love raising a glass (or two!) with this monogrammed pint glass. I loved being able to personalize with each guy’s initial.

These etched flasks will certainly lift spirits! Each flask can feature his monogram, or a personal message for groomsmen.

The vintage map journal is a great timeless gift for guys, one he can keep at his desk or for travel.

Middle School Sweethearts Say “I Do” in Romantic Barn Wedding by the Beach

We see beach weddings and we see rustic barn weddings, but it’s rare to find an outdoor rustic venue near the beach — which is exactly why this couples’ gorgeous day is a total gem. And when this couple first saw their venue, they knew it was the exact spot they wanted to celebrate their big day! With a classic and neutral color palette, personal details that made the day unique, and the gorgeous bride in a Monique Lhuillier gown, we are definitely catching the feels. Browse the entire gallery below, all captured by the talented Hello Blue Photo!

From the bride on photography… Not only did I immediately fall in love with Hello Blue Photo, but I also immediately fell in love with Christina! Breathtaking natural lighting, romantic, attention to detail, and priceless. From the bride’s dress down to the small details at the wedding venue, I knew that not one photography shot would be missed. I cannot recommend HBP enough. More important, I cannot recommend Christina enough. She has the kindest heart, sweetest soul, and man oh man is she passionate about wedding photography! I ultimately chose Christina for these reasons, as well as the fact that she made me feel so comfortable when I met her for the first time! In simplest terms, she felt like an older sister who made me feel like she was going to make sure that not only I had the perfect wedding, but she was going to capture my perfect wedding flawlessly! She embodied everything that Mike and I were looking for in a wedding photographer; the “style” (fine art), attention to detail, making sure she doesn’t miss any of the “important shots”, honesty, sincerity, and how endearing she was! I cannot express to you enough, how elated Mike and I are to have Christina, and Hello Blue Photo capturing the most important day of our lives!

From the bride on how they met… I met Mike in September of 2005. We had just both started the seventh grade at Cerro Villa Middle School. I walked into his choir class when he first noticed me, but I quickly transferred out of the class without noticing him. However as fate would have it, a few days later Mike had to unfortunately transfer out of his Honors History Class. Fortunately for me, he transferred into my Regular History Class where the teacher sat him right next to me. We immediately introduced ourselves to each other and have been inseparable ever since.

From the bride on wedding vision… Mike and I are both very laid back, nature-loving individuals. Some of our fondest memories together are made either at the beach or outdoor flea/farmers markets. When we got engaged, and being “California Kids”, we immediately knew that we wanted either wanted to get married on the beach or in a garden-inspired venue that encompassed various natural elements. After going to a few venues, Mike and I found the venue that was the best of both worlds “The Red Horse Barn”. Located in Huntington Beach, California, The Red Horse barn is a romantic, intimate, rustic, and breathtaking location. The beautiful ceremony and reception venue includes a spacious outdoor lawn, quaint garden gazebo, water features, and endless amounts of greenery/florals. As soon as we saw the venue, Mike and I knew that it was perfect for our California, garden-inspired wedding. When we envision our wedding, some main characteristics come to mind. We wanted it to be very personal. Mike and I have known each other for 12 years so it was very important for us to have an intimate wedding with people that we have known throughout our entire lives. We also wanted it to be very sentimental. We are choosing to give each other heartfelt love letters before the ceremony rather than doing personalized vows. Mike and I have a very unique relationship, and we both wanted to keep our intimate words between each other. We also hand selected the music in order to create an emotional ceremony/reception. Finally, we wanted to make sure that it was a fun experience for all of our guests! We wanted to include various elements that would include the guests; dollar dance, photobooth, and music for all ages. Overall, our main inspiration for our wedding was; the natural beach/garden California elements, our 12 years of friendship, and the different generations of weddings in my family.

Royal Wedding Details We Can Count On

Last month, Prince Harry surprised the world and his American love, Meghan Markle, by getting down on one knee and popping the question. Now, it’s REALLY official! The date has been set for May 19, 2018!

Ever since the Royal Family announced the engagement on November 27, the world has waited with bated breath to find out more details of the upcoming royal wedding. While many of the details will be kept secret until the May 2018 nuptials, there are a handful royal wedding traditions we can count on.

White Dress
Like most brides, the future princess will walk down the aisle in a white wedding dress. It was actually Harry’s great-great-great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria, who popularized the tradition of wearing a white wedding gown when she married Prince Albert in 1840.

Spring of Myrtle
In keeping with royal tradition, the bride’s bouquet will contain a sprig of myrtle- or the “herb of love.” This tradition is another that traces all the way back to the 1800’s.

Wedding Party
Like many families across the world, the Royal Family is close-knit and typically likes to include one another in milestone events. We saw this in 2011 when Prince Harry served as William’s supporter (or best man) at his marriage to Katherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Little royals, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, will likely steal the show when they serve as a pageboy and bridesmaid at the May 2018 ceremony.

Wedding Band
We don’t yet know if Harry will display his commitment on his left hand, but we do know that Meghan’s wedding band will contain Welsh gold. This royal tradition has been held dear to the Royal Family since the 1923 nuptials of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother to King George VI. Lucky for Meghan, yellow gold is her favorite!

Titles
When the knot is officially tied, Markle will officially assume the title of her husband and become HRH Meghan, Princess Henry of Wales. However, as we have seen in the past, The Queen will sometimes gift the newlyweds a new title. For example, Prince William and Katherine were gifted the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

For now, we can only bask in the bliss of the anticipation of another royal wedding and wait for more details to be released by the Royal Family.

A Seaside Wedding in Mexico That Is All About the Luxe Details

Now this is a couple that knows how to throw a party. That “host a fab wedding in paradise and bring all of your friends + family” kind of party. From their stunning Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort locale to their beautiful florals + decor crafted by the talents at Alquimia Events, they managed to seamlessly weave that laid-back destination vibe with luxe everything. See so much more captured by Quetzal Wedding Photos right here.

From Quetzal Wedding PhotosThis Dreams Playa Mujeres wedding was full on fun!! In their free time Gabe and Briana like to be with their family and friends. They also love to be outdoors, and just overall have a good time. Briana and Gabriel chose the white sandy beaches of Playa Mujeres for the backdrop of their celebration of love. Briana walked down the aisle in a stunning Calla Blanche gown. They were surrounded by their most important people. They chose earth tones and natural hues for their bridesmaids, and the men couldn’t have been more dapper with blue slacks and suspenders to match! They paid close attention to the details! You’ll know exactly what we mean when you see their stylish ring bearer! Briana had a gorgeous second outfit to get the party started. Gabe and Briana surprised their guests with amazing choreography that ends in a high lift above Gabe’s head!

This wedding had it all, but most importantly love. The speeches given by both friends and family members melted the hearts of all in the room. They walked off into the night after was all said and done hand-in-hand, and forever as one. The ceremony was performed at the central garden plaza of the Resort, followed by a cocktail hour which, of course, included a Mariachi Trio and delicious hors d´oeuvres! For the reception they came back to the central garden for the first dance as husband and wife! After dancing the night away they ended up the night with a sparkler send-off to a new beginning!

From Julie Paisley…  Sometimes you just meet the perfect couple and all things fall in line and magic happens. Meet Kelsey and Brad, they certainly fit that description. I knew from the first time I talked with Kelsey that she would be an amazing bride. She and Brad had the sweetest qualities about them, they adore each other and they are puppy parents so that’s an A+ in my books. This wedding just had everything a photographer dreams of, so much attention to detail. Kelsey used a geometric pattern throughout the details and I just loved how it all flowed together. Her colors also complemented the hues from the Quarry, and the natural greenery simple bouquets were just perfect. Oh and the hairstyles on the bridesmaids, you can build a complete Pinterest board just from this wedding! I could just go on and on for days but I think the pictures will tell the story just fine. Such an amazing team of vendors came together to bring about such a perfect day and these two certainly deserved it.

We Have Died And Gone to Craft Closet Heaven

If you are a crafter, a wrapper or simple a lover of beautifully organized spaces, then Leslie Bruce’s chic home office is going to be your total jam. From blush hues to a craft closet that puts Martha to shame and the end all be all of inspiration boards, this HQ is as pin-worthy as they come. Take the full tour of this inspiring space designed by Jette Creative, organized by Life in Jeneral and all captured by Emma Feil.

When we decided to make the move from our tiny Hollywood bungalow to Laguna Beach, I had one priority: space! Not only did my then two-year-old daughter need a place where she could spread her wings, I also needed a place where I could expand my business and wrap my head around next stages of growth.

Being a writer who dabbles in social media, I had at least a dozen storage boxes of books, decor and tchotchkes piled on top of each other in our garage. I’m a really visual person, so “outta sight, outta mind.” I would often forget about certain items, or ended up re-purchasing things I already had (which isn’t great use of finances for a small business owner).

My dream was a home office with enough storage that I could organize and access all of my props, books and files, but also find a way to keep things minimal and neat. I don’t do well with clutter. I need a clean desk and a clean space in order to function. Lucky for me, I teamed with Jesse DeSanti of Jette Creative to build out the perfect office (in the space that was originally the kitchen!). She designed a large, bright space with six oversized drawers, deep cabinets, and a floor to ceiling storage unit that could work as a clothing closet or a prop cabinet.

After we built the perfect space, I knew I needed help putting together my new office, so I reached out to Jen Robin of Life in Jeneral to come in and do an organizational overhaul. She helped me to use each nook and cranny to the best of its ability, while keeping it manageable, accessible and pretty.

Besides my daughter’s room, the office is the only other space in the house where I got to be a bit more feminine and frilly with the design and details (the rug is Emily & Merrit for Pottery Barn Kids!). Since Unpacified’s colors are pink and gray, it made sense to evoke the same vibe for my office.

My absolute favorite part of the space though is my giant pin board. I needed one to not only help me organize and visualize my latest book project, but also to act as an inspiration board for all my fun knickknacks, photos and sayings to keep me motivated throughout the day, including my favorite Andy Warhol quote:

“Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.”

Vintage Field Guides Inspired This Sweet Botanical Celebration

Inspired by the vintage field guides she enjoyed flipping through as a child at her grandparents’ home, this bride envisioned a magical, botanical celebration for her wedding day at Murray Hill. Bringing on a team of excellent vendors including Holley Heider Chapple, Claire Durán Weddings and Events, Amie Decker Beauty, Lisa Blume Photography, and Jenny Yoo Collection made her refined, organic vision come to life. And can you believe the bride created the seed favor packets herself? We have major heart eyes!

Whimsical

From the Bride… I grew up in Virginia but spent many years living in NYC after college. Then four years ago I decided to come back to DC.  Chad did his share of working and living overseas before deciding he wanted to settle down back here in Washington. Then a little over two years ago, the stars aligned, and we finally met each other at long last, right here in the city where we both returned.

We had tried to coordinate our first date a few times before. The first time, Chad had reached out and politely asked if we could reschedule due to an opportunity that had just come along for him to go deep-sea fishing that weekend, which doesn’t come along very frequently. I was mostly just intrigued to learn that this intellectual I had a date with apparently also had a deep-sea fishing hobby. He instead suggested another evening later in the week, but I had just landed tickets to see my all-time favorite band (the Pixies) play at the 9:30 Club, so that night wouldn’t work either. Chad would later tell me that he was intrigued to learn that I apparently had very good taste in music. So needless to say, we were both pretty curious about each other by the time we actually met.

It turned out that we were both going to be near Dupont Circle the following Monday evening, so we ended up at this hilarious Irish pub together, which I still laugh about. I had a raspy voice from seeing the Pixies show the night before, so I was having a little trouble talking over the impromptu karaoke session that seemingly started out of nowhere over in the corner. I was telling him about the show when Chad chimed in about all the bands he’s into himself, and with that discovery, the two of us basically launched into a few hours of extended discussion on our favorite albums and indie rock bands. This alone would have been enough to fill a whole night of conversation, but what actually drew me in was our countless other quirky interests and shared passions that kept popping up and surprising each other that night. We both had an inexplicable affinity for Japanese culture, a passion for cooking complicated meals, a love for city living. We soon traded stories about scuba diving and massive DIY home improvement projects we’ve undertaken (with questionable judgement), our tech geekery, our obsessive interest in design, and many other areas where uncanny overlaps kept coming up. It was clear that we both had a tendency to take on personal projects and completely immerse ourselves in our interests with studious attention and curiosity. Suddenly, we were on our fifth date within just one week’s time, and Chad said something about how he “collects hobbies”. It was in that moment that it kind of dawned on me: I might be face to face with one of my own kind. And that is how our loved ones tend to describe the two of us – we are totally one another’s missing other half. I never imagined that someone so perfect for me existed. We were soon over the moon for one another.

Chad was pretty smooth about things the night he proposed, I must say. He created a scavenger hunt for me leading up to big the moment. First, you should know that there was an occasion where I had pointed out a ring to him somewhere. It was a simple infinity band, but with long baguette-cut stones alternating with the tiny round-cut stones all the way around it.  “I love this!” I told him.  “It goes dot-dash-dot… it’s like MORSE CODE,” I whispered to him loudly.  He got a laugh out of that, because of course, a geek like me would be obsessed with the fact that it looks like Morse code.  Months later, the two of us had plans to meet some of his friends for a nice dinner out on a Friday night.  And I was completely unsuspecting that it was anything more, which by the way is typically IMPOSSIBLE to pull off with me. I had been getting ready when I suddenly discovered that there was a gorgeous bouquet of calla lilies waiting for me on the dining room table.  When I then saw a stack of numbered envelopes that were tied with a beautiful ribbon sitting alongside the flowers, I kind of knew that something else was going on that evening.  He had written out messages on each of the cards…in Morse code.  I had to decode these first, which ended up being a series of addresses.  I wasn’t allowed to look up what the addresses were, I was just instructed to go to each.  When I arrived at the address on the first card, it ended up being the cheesy Irish pub in Dupont!  We had a drink and together we laughed and relived memories from that night.  After that drink, there were a few other stops we made together, but when we reached the Tidal Basin where the cherry blossom trees grow, that is where he got down on one knee in the moonlight and proposed.  He gave me a gorgeous vintage diamond ring that had been in his family for several generations – it’s absolutely beautiful.  And afterwards, ever the foodie, we celebrated with the most amazing meal – a private dining experience at the most divine restaurant in the city (Minibar), where they welcomed us with congratulatory glasses of champagne when we arrived because they already knew that he had just proposed!

When I discovered Murray Hill during my venue search, it was simply a match made in heaven. It is such a magical venue, and has so many elements that made us excited – the riverside ceremony, for example. The estate setting with its formal gardens has an enchanting elegance about it by the manor house, and then there’s the reflecting pool, which has a secret garden feel to it. And last but not least, the renovated barn. I’ve always imagined having a barn wedding. I love the idea of everyone feeling relaxed and easy. Having all of these elements in one venue really suits the two of us. We used the refined manor house for the ceremony, transitioned to the gorgeous formal gardens for the cocktail hour, and then the beautiful barn for the celebration.  It was as if we had three venues in one, and it all connected organically.

We were going for a botanical garden look that was organic and refined.  For me it was all about the botanicals.  I adore everything about flowers and gardening, and Chad is a world-class outdoorsman and unbelievable home chef who grows a whole garden of herbs and ingredients every year.  This all naturally came together for the botanical garden theme.  And I knew that Holly Chapple lived in Loudoun County, who was a trailblazer in botanical floral design – it all seemed meant to be.  Then one night I was remembering my grandparent’s home and how they loved nature and had so many old field guides that I used to flip through, looking at the sketches.  I bought several vintage field guides on wildflowers and used the pages inside for much of our wedding stationery.

Holly Chapple did such an unbelievable job with the floral design – my guests are still talking about the breathtaking flowers!  They were beyond my wildest dreams, and my heart just sang when I saw what she had done.  I am so very grateful to have worked with her.

Also, in the days leading up to the wedding, I began to consider having the ceilings draped in the barn, which we had not planned on originally.  I sent an inquiry to Elegant Momentz, who I knew had done draping there before, to see if it might still be possible, although I did not expect they could on such short notice.  I was floored when they put the wheels in motion and made it happen!  And the effect was gorgeous.

Chad proposed with an heirloom diamond ring from three generations ago. Chad’s family has an interesting lineage of American diplomats, and this ring is a piece from his great-grandmother’s collection from when she lived in Italy. One of the things I really love is that we are getting married on the 8th of the month, and this ring with its two diamonds is shaped like the number “8”.

Our favorite memory from the entire day was our first dance – I forgot that anyone else was in the room.  It felt like it was just the two of us, and I was filled with so much love and joy in my heart to be holding the hand of the man I love so much.

Also, my older brother Josh knew how much I love string lights, and so he teamed up with one of my bridesmaids’ husbands to surprise me by putting up twinkle lights along the perimeter of the yard that day.  Not only did I absolutely love the lights, but I was so incredibly touched that they had done that for me.

I was definitely a DIY bride.  I love design so much, and doing the event design for our wedding became my creative outlet – I worked away for weeks on all of the little details, from designing the stationery to picking all of the glassware and place settings.  I loved dreaming up the menus, place cards, and table numbers in the theme of the vintage wildflower field guides, and sourcing all of the elements needed to bring my ideas to life.  I also have some limited experience in graphic design, so I was able to create a custom graphic to look like a vintage seed packet with our wedding details.  We used that for our wedding favors, which were candy-coated sunflower seeds.

I wanted a gown with illusion detailing at the neckline and layering in the skirt – they remind me of icing on gorgeous cakes.  I had visited several bridal salons and tried on many without finding one that felt right.  But, like many brides, one day I happened to try on a dress that was not what I had been looking for – in my case, it was a drop-waisted gown.  It felt so right that I immediately switched course in what I was looking for.  I found a photo of a gown by Watters that had gorgeous fabric and what appeared to be the perfect drop-waist silhouette.  After making some phone calls, I was fortunate enough to find a boutique that carried a sample.  It was my first visit to Lovely Bride in Georgetown, and I did not need to try on anything else after I put that Watters gown on.  It was the one.  The only thing it was missing was the layering in the skirt and the illusion neckline that I had originally envisioned.  So I put my drawing skills to work and came up with a sketch of design changes.  I worked with a seamstress to bring the customized design to life and the result was dreamy!

The Story Behind This Elopement Will Give You All the Feels

With 2017 coming to an end, we’re sharing one of the most generous love stories of the year. Brace yourselves.

Houston natives Shellie Schoellkopf and Robert Callaway were supposed to get married in a big Southern ceremony and reception in their home state of Texas on October 7th. Hurricane Harvey had other plans. The couple decided to cancel their reception and donate the $5,000 price tag of the post-ceremony party to help their community, which was devastated after the storm. This story of paying it forward doesn’t end there either.

Meanwhile, a few hundred miles north, local New York married couple, Cat Greenleaf (who you may recognize from USA’s “Talk Stoop” where she interviews celebs on her stoop in Brooklyn with her rescue pups) and her husband Mike Rey, had recently opened a stunning wedding venue upstate, The Catskill Mountain House. Moved by Shellie and Robert’s story, they flew them out for an elopement re-do and honeymoon on the gorgeous property, complete with a glamorous tour of New York City to see the sights.

From timeless crystal flutes that would make Liz Taylor swoon to charming Airstream caravans and bold patterns, these photos captured by Mekina Saylor Weddings will take you back in time to what feels like a 1960s movie set. If this story of paying it forward (twice!) doesn’t give you the warm and fuzzies, I don’t know what will.
