Nature Box + A GIVEAWAY + A DISCOUNT

When the kind folks at NatureBox offered to send me a package of goodies in order to truthfully share my thoughts with you, our incredible SMP readers, it was all I could do to not jump up and down. I had heard wonderful things about this company in the past, and couldn’t wait to give them a test run for myself. Shortly thereafter, the magical box filled to the brim with a variety of natural, healthy snacks made its way onto my doorstep. I immediately tore through each package stuffing little bits of deliciousness into my face (really, that sounds about as attractive as it was.) There were five generously sized bags of treats, all of which were delicious in their own right. The Taj Mahal snack mix was pretty much a party in my mouth with its transition from sweet to savory, while the Mango Almond Bites had that intensely satisfying crunch. But for the sake of honesty, the Blueberry Nom Noms stole the show (and no, not just because of their ridiculously awesome name) I don’t even know what was in them! Definitely love, for sure.

I could truly, wholeheartedly, continue to wax poetic about this company, but instead of me carrying along, I strongly suggest you take it for a test run yourself. NatureBox is a subscription service that offers the ability to discover and enjoy healthy snacks on a monthly basis for as little as $19.99 a month (which includes shipping!). Their products are made from wholesome ingredients and are nutritionist-approved, which is something I can fully stand behind.

And just in case you need another reason to join, NatureBox is currently offering all SMP Living readers a 50% off their 1st box with the code SMP50. This code is valid through August 31st on any sized box.

Now for the fun bit. Two of you can win a six month subscription to this fab company. The details? Right here:
the-giveaway

The Prize: Two lucky readers will win a six month subscription to NatureBox.

To Enter: Click right here, and then come back and let us know which box suits your fancy.

Lillet & Gin Cocktail from Molly McGlone & Bryce Covey

It’s my personal believe that at the center of every good dinner party – like the one that Molly designed and Bryce captured here – is a really, really good cocktail. One that feels rich and special, something a bit out of the ordinary that will have your guests raving. Although not too much raving because we all know what happens to a dinner party when 2 good cocktails turns into 4. So here is  Molly‘s signature cocktail – a splash of gin, a splash of fabulous – captured beautifully by the talented Bryce Covey.

Bear Flag Farm from Kristy Weldon

The lovely (and very creative) Bride at the center of this amazing Bear Flag Farm wedding said she wanted her guests to feel as though they walked into a very whimsical, private moment – and I do believe she achieved just that. Her wedding to her dashing Groom was not only a reflection of them as a couple, but it also was a simply stunning affair from start to finish. Kristy Weldon’s images give us a peek into all the prettiness of the evening, and you can see every last moment right here.

From the Bride….Some people say it was destiny. Others think, ‘well of course they got together, how simple.’ We reconnected after many years of life lived in between. Neither of us could ever have imagined we would meet again and get married. We met when we were in high school… It was a story of unrequited love. Twelve years later, I was visiting the San Francisco area from Los Angeles… At the time, I even had the thought, ‘I’m single and free…. living in France sounds like a wonderful idea…!’ I was busy making plans and hoping for a new life adventure. Well, after reconnecting with Blake, a new life adventure is what I got.

The wedding needed to be an all-out experience, not a cookie cutter event. As an artist, I have a very specific process. I started collecting random cut outs of things that inspired me…. I’m a big believer in dream boards or storyboards. This board had everything and anything on it… ribbons from gifts, menus from restaurants, pictures, and quotes. I was on the quest to really define myself and how I felt about Blake…I wanted to create the effect that the wedding was just Blake and I sharing in these moments, and that no one else was around… I wanted guests to feel like they stumbled on to us. I wanted people to feel like they walked into a whimsical private moment… Very midsummer nights dream…The wedding needed to be very classic, timeless and yet unique. I love bygone eras. The classic 50’s inspired parts of the day and, for my second dress, I went for the 1970’s laurel canyon vibe. These were just loose inspirations though, as I didn’t want to have an era-inspired wedding.

It was the hottest day of the year- literally. We didn’t care, though, because we were so into the moment that it didn’t matter so much. A yoga teacher of mine advised me… ‘No matter what you do, come back to the moment.’ I’m happy to say that we were able to do that… It was all about our commitment to one another, our marriage, it was like we were in this beautiful, intimate exchange the entire time. We took plenty of moments to step back and take a deep breath…

Fun Note on the Shoes: As a child, I loved the movie Sleeping Beauty. At the end, the fairy godmothers change her dress color from pink to blue. As a kid, I truly believed I could have a dress like that if I got married. I knew I wanted to add this blue and pink element in a classy way. One day I was painting an abstract sky watercolor and I remembered that childhood fantasy. I figured, somehow, I could make my shoes change from pink to blue!

Beach Wedding in Perth from DeRay & Simcoe Photography

This couple is so in love, it’s palpable.  Like it jumps straight from the computer screen and right into your heart the very second you lay your eyes on their smiling faces and non-stop happiness.  It’s the kind of love that is downright contagious… and their wedding?  A serious day of pretty with a seaside ceremony, stunning blooms from Twigged and a whole lot of breathtaking moments captured by DeRay & Simcoe Photography filling the gallery.  Join me there for every last second of amazing.

Sophie and Adam’s ceremony took place under a handmade chuppah on the beach under blue skies with magical, fluffy white clouds. The beach was Pinnaroo Point in Hillarys, Perth. The reception was also held beachside and featured one of the most amazing sunsets we’ve ever seen at a wedding. The bridal portraits were taken on the beach straight after the ceremony and then at the Hillary’s Boat Harbour just outside the reception venue. They had whimsical flowers in a ‘wild daisy’ style and they made lots of DIY goodness for the reception. Sophie made the place cards herself, their family helped out with the decor and Adam decorated the surfboard with the couple’s name and wedding date.

The bride’s family made the trip to Australia from their home in the UK. It meant so much to Sophie to have her Mum and Dad with her on her big day. Sophie’s sister, Rachel was her bridesmaid along with two other dear friends who flew over for the event. They got ready at a quirky beach house near the ceremony.

The groom’s family is Jewish so there was a lovely sprinkling of tradition including the breaking of the glass at the ceremony and the crazy Jewish dancing at the reception. Adam’s 102-year-old Uncle Rudy was an honoured guest. Adam is very close to his whole family.

Their celebrant Terry Healey wore a “go-pro” video camera to capture all of the action of the ceremony. Following the ceremony, all of the guests truly enjoyed the dancing, including their visitors from England.

This wedding was such a pleasure for us to photograph. The couple is so in love, sweet and tender with each other at all times. Their families made us feel so welcome and we really felt like part of something special at this wedding.

Rustic

From the Bride… Ravinia was the perfect mix of rustic beauty, musical inspiration and architectural history for our wedding in March 2013. The location was the inspiration for the wedding design and overall set the tone for the wedding. We both wanted the feel of an outdoor wedding without it actually being outdoors (Chicago Springs can still be chilly). Ravinia was the perfect location with its open grounds completely empty for our event (a normally VERY crowded music festival all to ourselves!!). The ceremony and reception both took place in Ravinia’s main building with floor to ceiling windows using the outdoor trees and landscape as the ceremony backdrop. It was the perfect quiet oasis for our Rustic, Simplistic, and Elegant Wedding. We chose muted spring tones of pale green, white and gray which felt very simplistic yet elegant. We brought in the rustic elements through the use of branches, wood, and lanterns seen throughout the ceremony and reception. All these elements were reflections from the landscape of Ravinia.

Ravinia has a fabulous mixture of contemporary architecture and historical character in it’s buildings. As an Interior Design Major in college, I have a passion for beautifully designed spaces. We used the entire grounds for photography. The historic buildings in Ravinia provided not only richness to the photography, but it brought in my husband’s love for music. We expanded on the musical inspiration by having the song “Your Hands in Mine” by Explosions in the Sky, specially scored and played by a full band as the processional music. The song added a contemporary element to the rustic surroundings and was truly authentic to our event.

The main details to bring into focus: the AMAZING mix of silver and bronze lanterns that lined the entire ceremony aisle. This brought romance to the space while still keeping that clean simplistic look and feel we wanted. The gorgeous dark drift wood centerpiece with beautiful white peonies at the head table. Our guest table centerpieces with a mix of white and green floral with a touch of curly willow accents. Tree branch gobo projection on the dance floor and curly willow stage backdrop.  Customized chalkboard menu and sweet table sign.  Our beautiful textured cake placed on top a round wood table accented with botanical elements. This was a great mix of the simple and rustic feel we were going for.

Our main focus with all these details was to take full advantage of the amazing seamless view we had to the outdoors. Out interior and exterior became one!!

Windermere Manor Wedding from Daring Wanderer

Daring Wanderer describes this gorgeous wedding at The Windermere Manor as a “photographer’s dream” – but I think it’s safe to say it’s a blogger’s dream too. And a reader’s. I mean, what is possibly better than devouring pretty like this? The bouquets alone by Jim Anderson Flowers will make your jaw hit your desk, and that’s just the tip of the pretty iceberg – the rest is waiting for you right here.

From Daring WandererI have been dreaming of an ivy garden themed diy wedding since I began my journey as a professional wedding photographer. That dream came true with Siona and Ryan’s Winderemere Manor wedding filled with floral and vintage flare and lots of handmade goodness including the center pieces, banners and the groom and groomsmen’s ties! The bride, Siona, along with many of her bridesmaids are fine arts graduates from the University of Western Ontario so you can only imagine all of the creative ideas that were bounced around during the planning processing leading up to the wedding. Every detail was meticulously thought out, right down to the bridesmaids getting ready kimonos. A photographer’s dream!

From the Bride…Martin and I met at school when we were just 4 years old however it was nothing more than friendship until Martin asked me to dance at the school’s summer ball when we were both 15. After that we were inseparable and began dating. Ten years later, Martin finally popped the question with a beautiful antique 1930’s ring on a blustery autumn day on Hampstead Heath over looking London, the city that has been our home for 8 years. We celebrated with cupcakes and coke floats at my favorite bakery.

We had often discussed what our wedding might be like but can honestly say that the weekend exceeded all of our hopes and wishes. We always knew we wanted a small wedding to share with just our closest friends and family so started looking at small boutique hotels in the sunshine. We stumbled across the Kinsterna Hotel and Spa one Sunday afternoon. It looked like the perfect venue, situated amongst the olive groves and vineyards of the hotels own estate, it is a magnificent Byzantine fortified home which has been lovingly restored using the original building methods and has been converted into a spectacular place to stay.

Being of Greek heritage, I had always thought that getting married in Greece would be a nice nod to my ancestors. My Grandparents, English Grandfather and Greek Grandmother, met and fell in love during the war and married in Greece before traveling to England to start a family and begin their long and happy marriage. Sadly neither of them are with us any longer so it felt special to be able to start our journey the way they started theirs.

It wasn’t long before we arranged to visit the hotel for a long weekend with my father. Upon arrival we knew that the Kinsterna was the perfect venue for our celebrations. The hotel manager Theo Terzopolous helped us every step of the way in planning the perfect long weekend for us and our guests and he and the rest of the staff could not have been more accommodating of our vision. Nothing was too small, too difficult or too much trouble for them.

The wedding day itself was perfect, our guests spent the morning chilling by the pool as me, my sister, mother and mother-in-law watched from my balcony as we enjoyed a champagne breakfast. Our ceremony took place in the afternoon overlooking the Aegean Sea, we couldn’t have asked for a more romantic setting, a champagne reception followed before our guests tucked into a seven course meal. A thunderstorm was predicted to hit Monemvasia during the day, but luckily the sun shone and it only arrived later that night when we had to evacuate indoors for our first dance. Everyone was back outside in no time and we finished the evening dancing under the stars until the early hours.

We wanted our wedding to be very personal so decided to do many of the decoration and stationary elements ourselves. We decided on a neutral color theme of creams, dusky pinks, burnt oranges and gold to complement the colours of the beautiful natural surroundings. We wanted all of our wedding stationary to have a rustic feel and hand designed our wedding invitations, lining the envelopes with vintage map prints and using twine to seal them. Other DIY touches included hand stamped name placements tied with vintage ribbon, vintage handkerchiefs in wine crates whilst wooden fans were placed on everyones seats during the ceremony to help combat the warm Greek sun. For our wedding favors we made boutonnieres using tulle and twine and my mother painted the frames that we used for our table numbers. We wanted our flowers to have a freshly picked feel and incorporated olive branches and cypress leaves from the hotel grounds and Fevronia, our florist, did a wonderful job of bringing our visions to life.

The day after the wedding we had a pool party, it was really special for us to have an extra day to spend quality time with our friends and family and see everyone enjoying themselves, relaxing and having fun. That evening we had a drinks reception and his and hers cocktails were served in jam jars. We then had a dinner by the Cistern where everyone sat around one long table to share a Greek feast and drink great wine made from the hotels own vineyards. The highlight of the evening was when Theo suprised us by arranged a tree planting ceremony where we planted our very own olive tree as a symbol of peace and love. We look forward to revisiting the Kinsterna for years to come and to watch it grow along with our marriage.

Block Island Wedding from A Guy and A Girl Photography

There isn’t a moment of this Block Island beauty that I don’t adore. And when I say adore, I mean I want to crawl into the beautiful pictures from A Guy and A Girl Photography and never leave. It’s really no surprise when Ryan Designs was behind the decor, Ceci New York was the creative mind behind those fabulous letterpressed invitations (complete with wardrobe recommendations), and the Sullivan House set the stage. That’s the recipe for pure wedding perfection – which is exactly what you’ll see in the full gallery of images.

From A Guy and A Girl Photo…We think that a couple who chooses the walls are coming down/fanfarlo as the soundtrack for the ceremony recessional wins automatically. This couple would probably win a bunch of other competitions, as well…including:  most unique story told during initial phone call: Jenn told us that though she and Brion had known each other casually, for a while, they hadn’t started dating yet. One night, Brion appeared in her dream and she knew she needed to find out more about him. Fast-forward several years, we’re shooting their fabulous wedding on block island. They also win for funnest wedding eve festivities.  there were about 8 different kinds of beer, many, many super-cool tats on family and friends and custom washers with Jenn + Brion’s names on them for the beach games… but you should know that there were also trophies. Yes, real washer-game trophies. We could go on and on about all the amazing little details of their beautiful, vintage-y, rustic-chic wedding…the tables at the reception that were made with salvaged wood found on the beaches of BI…their sweet, fluffy maltipoo, parker, who stole the show…Jenn’s amazingly gorgeous dress (first one she tried on)…their impressive and super-creative letterpress invitations…and then, lastly, the bonfire finale, down on the beach, complete with a pickup truck, where a guitar was played and everyone sang-a-long to songs like byyye byyye, miss american pie…  ahhh…what an amazing end to an incredible wedding weekend!  Thank you, Jenn + Brion for being so fun and lovely… you showed block island how it’s done!!!!

Tybee Island Bridal Session from L’Art Orange Photography

This bride has a style all her own.  A downright fabulous style that combines her serious beauty with a gorgeous Barbara Allin gown and a crazy amazing Anthropologie headpiece.  It’s the kind of style that lights up the room with every last smile and, when set against a breathtaking Tybee Island backdrop, it’s almost too pretty to believe.  L’Art Orange Photography captured every gorgeous moment and it’s what we’re calling the epitome of bridal session lovely.  See it all in the full gallery.

From L’Art Orange Photography… There’s something liberating about these images with messy beach hair and salty waves, they’re unpretentious and whimsical.  This session was focused on Gaby’s beauty and a gorgeous summer sunset at the beach.  Sometimes accessories overcrowd sessions and brides get lost in all the flowers and settings.  The truth is that simple beauty is candid and free. These images are all about her, who she is, and her love for the ocean.  You’re only young once, so why not celebrate at the beach and playing with the waves while wearing a gorgeous dress? Gaby lives in Savannah and her session was done on a gorgeous summer evening at Tybee Island, GA.

8 Steps to Making the Jump from Bride to Wedding Professional with Floret Cadet

OK, ladies, be honest… how many of you secretly love(d) planning your wedding and wish it would never end? And how many of you have contemplated making a career change to the wedding industry during or after the wedding planning process? I wouldn’t be surprised to see most of your hands raised right now. A lot of wedding pro’s we know, including many of our talented Little Black Book members, got their start this way and now run successful businesses doing what they love every. single. day.

But making the jump from Bride to wedding pro is not as easy as snapping your wedding-loving fingers and saying “I do!”, there are several things to take into consideration beforehand. Enter Kate of Floret Cadet, corporate publicist turned floral designer. This gal cranks out some seriously beautiful floral pretties, so we’re beyond thrilled that she’s sharing her 8 steps to success. Now, let’s meet the Bride turned wedding pro, shall we?

From Kate of Floret CadetIt’s no wonder that so many people contemplate making a career switch from hands-on bride to wedding industry professional during their engagements; getting married nudges you to think hard about the future, and wedding planning is such an involving process that can inspire lots of great ideas for products or services along the way. If you have gone the DIY route on a design aspect of your wedding and done a great job, or you just loved the overall planning process and think you’d be great at helping other brides as a coordinator, you might be seriously contemplating turning your own experience into a professional asset. I did just that. Though I’d tinkered with flowers for a long time and had taken some classes, I didn’t get seriously obsessed with floral design until I planned my own wedding. Thankfully, I was talked out of doing my own wedding flowers, but I did start working for other florists and booking small weddings as a side job the instant I returned from my honeymoon. It’s been two years since then and I’m now at it full time and absolutely loving most aspects of my new career (the parts I don’t love: cleaning up after design days, and reconciling expenses). I learned a lot during my slow transition from corporate publicist to small business owner, and am excited to be here today sharing some tips with you!

1. Don’t be tempted to be your own first client

Believe me, I understand the temptation to use your own wedding as an occasion to create the flowers, cake, or decor details of your dreams and build your portfolio at the same time. But your first wedding as a professional will be anxiety provoking, and the lead up to your wedding will be so hectic – don’t combine them and double your stress! With the exception of some graphic design or craft projects that you can do way ahead of time, you should just be the bride at your own wedding. If you are really eager, make something for your shower, engagement party, or rehearsal dinner instead and make sure you get great professional photos of it.

2. Don’t make any major moves until the fairy dust has worn off

Every time we go on a vacation, my husband and I start fantasizing about moving there, and usually get as far as casually looking at real estate circulars. But the second we get back to reality we realize that we’re not serious about moving. It can be the same with weddings. When you are relishing your own engagement, it’s easy to fantasize about how much fun it would be to leave your corporate job and stay on wedding planning cloud 9. But wait until you’ve come back down to earth and gotten exposure to the reality of working (not playing) in the wedding industry before you make any big changes. The reality is that as a business owning wedding vendor you will work long hours, give up your weekends, need to constantly market yourself and find ways to set yourself apart, and reinvest most if not all of the money you’re able to make in the early years to grow your business. Kind of like in relationships, sheer passion isn’t enough – some practical things also have to line up for it to work.

3. Do use your own wedding vendors as a resource

Don’t be afraid to be honest with your own wedding vendors about the fact that you’re contemplating making a career jump. They’ll probably be happy to serve as a sounding board. Of course it’s going to be awkward if you’re asking them about things like their exact profit margins while you’re a client, but you can definitely ask them how they got into the business, how they get most of their clients, and what the best and hardest things about their jobs are. If you really hit it off with a vendor in the category you are trying to break into, maybe you can serve as an assistant to them after your wedding. Or if you forge a great relationship with your photographer, it might make sense to team up and have them photograph some projects for your portfolio later.

4. Don’t come off as a Johnny-come-lately

A common complaint among wedding pros is that the barriers to entry are relatively low and tons of recent brides with only semi-serious professional aspirations are crowding their field. Don’t be perceived as one of them by potential clients or colleagues. Don’t work your own wedding details into every conversation and don’t emphasize the frivolous side of weddings at the expense of the professional side.

5. Do bring your perspective as a recent bride to the table

That said, having recently gotten married yourself can be an advantage if you make it one. You are abreast of the latest trends, you have very fresh memories of what engaged couples are going through, how they’re finding vendors and what they’re looking for in a working relationship. Stay in touch with all of that!

6. Do get a website up and running

Even if your fledgling business isn’t officially launched or isn’t being credited with some aspect of the event, if your wedding photos are published on a wedding blog or the vendors own blogs, there is usually some sort of background information about the couple included. There might be an opportunity to link to your website, even if it’s very basic. My own florist did me a solid and linked to my site here when she blogged my wedding flowers, which was great!

7. Do start your business slowly and strategically

I think the perfect first clients are friends of friends or casual acquaintances. You will probably be working for little profit at first to build a portfolio, and it’s so nice to have early clients who appreciate your talent and feel a little invested in your success rather than random people who are just looking for a rock bottom price. Start your business slowly and let word of mouth build through your social networks. You’re going for this recommendation: “My cake was made by a friend of a friend who has been baking as a hobby for a long time but is just getting started doing wedding cakes professionally. She is so talented and she’s getting more established now, I was lucky to get her when I did,” over this one: “I contacted a bunch of people I found online, and she was way cheaper than anyone else because she is just getting started, so I went with her and luckily she did a good job.”

Also, go after ancillary events, like showers, before you start booking weddings. You will avoid biting off more than you can chew and those events are also very chic, and crawling with other potential clients.

8. Don’t sell yourself short

It’s a big temptation when you love what you do or are still relatively new to the field to price your work like a hobby that you’re trying to subsidize rather than a real business. Of course in the early days, you’ll have to price your services according to your experience, but don’t get stuck there. If you don’t charge fair rates, you will burn out very quickly! Keep evaluating what your fellow wedding vendors are charging and critically assess where you should fit into the landscape.

Long Island Wedding from Robert & Kathleen Photographers

At the heart of every wedding is a love story. A weak at the knees, let’s grow old together kind of story that sets my heart aflutter time and time again. But what makes this one a wee bit sweeter is that this adorable duo grew up together — even attending the same pre-school. But as fate would have it, it wasn’t until just five years ago that they truly fell in love. The celebration? A classic Long Island affair with pops of pink blooms by Bayport Flower House. The whole day was captured by Robert & Kathleen Photographers, and there’s an entire gallery and film waiting for you below.

From Robert & Kathleen PhotographersKathleen and Dan had known each other for years. Growing up in the same town, they seemed to orbit around one another – attending the same preschool, elementary school, high school. They knew each other’s names, would recognize each other in town. But in all those years they had never really gotten to know one another. Until a dinner on the Upper East Side five years ago changed all that for good. That night, they shared sushi and traded stories and, in the process, found that they had much more in common that just living within the same zip code as kids. They talked for hours and by the time the night was over, Kathleen knew she wanted to see Dan again. Because in those few hours with him, she knew deep down that something incredible was beginning.

After that night, Dan couldn’t seem to stop thinking about Kathleen’s laugh. That infectious, Julia-Roberts-style laugh that made him smile at the mere thought of it. He needed to see her again. He needed to hear that laugh again. Because seeing Kathleen’s smile, hearing that laugh, made Dan feel something he never had felt before. Over the next four years they shared many more dinners. They discovered new New York neighborhoods, traveled to beautiful places, and dreamt of the life they would share together. After all those years of passing by one another, they knew that this time the timing was exactly right. They had “found” each other and they weren’t going to take that for granted.

Last year there was another dinner. Another night on the East Side, sharing sushi and trading stories. After dinner Dan got a phone call. He was needed at work, right away. He had to go fix something at a job site. With no time to spare, he told Kathleen she would have to come with him and that it shouldn’t take long. She agreed, thinking it must be a serious emergency since Dan would never usually takes her to a job site. They were ushered into Grand Central, met by security and granted access to the 59th floor.

But there is no 59th floor in the MetLife building. There was no work emergency for Dan to rush to either. When the elevators door opened, Dan escorted Kathleen out onto the roof of the building. He took her hand and walked her around, showing her the view of Manhattan from nearly 60 stories up. There, with the city traffic rushing by below them and the Empire State Building standing tall behind them, Dan got down on one knee and asked Kathleen to be his wife. Fourteen months later, they gathered together all of their family and friends, all the people who had shared this journey with the two of them, in one of their favorite places in the world. They promised to love each other forever and hosted the celebration of their lives, with bonfires by the water and dancing well into the night. There, at the end of Long Island, Kathleen and Dan’s married life began.

A Summer Dinner Party from Molly Pollet & Bryce Covey

While over-the-top styled events are always appreciated for their inspirational qualities, sometimes it’s nice to sit back and focus on real-live ones that are completely and totally feasible. Events like this simple yet elegant dinner party that Molly Pollet threw for her graduate boyfriend (congrats graduate boyfriend!) With just a few key elements (like calligraphy place cards – swoon), this celebration is effortless perfection. Captured by Bryce Covey, there’s lots more in the gallery.

From Molly…Planning this dinner party was extra special for me. My boyfriend graduated from his master’s program and the dinner was planned for our two families to get together to celebrate. I got to plan everything with my favorite creative partner – my mom. She’s incredibly talented, and has a beautiful home to work with. We wanted to keep the décor simple and natural so that the focus stayed on the food, drinks and, most importantly, the company.

Being May, we kept everything fresh for the summer with natural linens and white florals. We started with a cheese platter, and served classic old fashioneds – the graduate’s favorite cocktail – and a gin & lillet cocktail for the ladies. For dinner, we grilled steaks and asparagus, and made a delicious panzanella salad. We also got to all share 2 bottles of Château Margaux that my boyfriend’s parents brought home from France over 10 years ago.

We made lemon bars, chocolate chip bars, and brownies for dessert that we cut into small squares and passed around the table after everyone was done eating dinner. This way, everyone can stay around the table and continue talking. The whole night was so perfect and special. My incredibly talented friend, Bryce Covey, was so generous to come over and capture the details.

Coming up, Molly’s recipe for a Lillet & Gin Cocktail!

Flamingo Gardens Wedding from Melanie Gabrielle Photography

A wedding filled with this much heart is a sure-fire way to make me break out the awwws. And when that wedding was captured this beautifully (thanks to Melanie Gabrielle Photography), it basically guarantees one fabulous start to my day. From the pretty palette to the sweet details planned by Simply Couture Weddings and all the special moments in between – this is just a peak at all the pretty, there is so much more sitting right here.

From Melanie Gabrielle PhotographyJosh and Bailey are the sweetest couple. Their wedding was planned and coordinated by Teresa of Simply Couture Weddings, and she did a fabulous job! They had a very unique, southern wedding full of so many details!! Bailey had her mother’s veil altered to wear on her wedding day with a gorgeous Lazaro gown. Janette Vega did the wedding party’s makeup, and Ashley Davis and Angie Bascietto did an amazing job on these beautiful girls’ hair.

Josh proposed to Bailey after a hot air balloon ride he took her on for her birthday, so of course they had to incorporate hot air balloons into their special day! Bailey’s bridesmaids helped pitch in to bake all of her delicious desserts for her dessert table. The pie and hot air balloon cookies were made by the photographer as a gift to the bride. Publix made the delicious cake and all those yummy cupcakes! Old Florida Catering provided the BBQ dinner. Love Bug Productions provided video, Gerilyn Gianna Events provided the wedding party’s bouquets and boutonnieres. All other flowers were provided by Simply Couture Weddings. Hay bales for “mocktail” hour were provided by Griffs Western. Dino DiArtist did a spectacular job providing caricatures to all of Josh and Bailey’s wedding guests! Bailey’s family made most of the details for the ceremony and reception: games, centerpieces, lights, photobooth and accessories, wooden directional signs, cupcake stands, seating chart, etc. Their venue was so unique! Flamingo Gardens is a botanical garden and wildlife refuge. It was peacock mating season at the gardens, so if you look close enough, you can see the territorial peacocks attacking the guitars behind the ceremony site.

Bailey’s dad is a Southern Baptist Pastor, and one of the most special and unique details of the day was the foot-washing ceremony. Mr. Doolin handmade the foot-washing bowl. He gave a short sermon on why they chose to do a foot-washing ceremony. A few of the groomsmen played guitar and sang old hymns (Come Thou Fount and Be Thou My Vision) while the bride and groom’s mothers poured the water into the bowl. The bride and groom then washed each other’s feet to symbolize the servanthood that Jesus showed to his Disciples. It was a gorgeous ceremony.

New York City Engagement Session from W Studios New York

I know I’ve said this before, but is New York City the perfect place for engagement sessions or what?  I mean, the hustle and bustle of the city, the seriously stunning backdrops, the never-ending lineup of fabulous locales… it’s a city simply made for capturing that pre-wedding bliss.  And when that pre-wedding bliss comes in the form of an uber-cute couple such as this one, it makes it all the more merrier with smile after smile captured by W Studios New York and a whole lot of happy moments in this urban lover’s paradise.  See it all right here.

From W Studios New York… Ashley and Sean moved to the city from Los Angeles last June. Our New York winters were a big adjustment for this sun loving couple, but luckily we planned their engagement session on the first warm day of the year! It seemed like all of New York decided to venture out on this beautiful day. The High Line park was filled with visitors and greenery, which made Sean a little uncomfortable, but as long as he was looking at Ashley his face would light up and a huge smile would spread across his face. Soon after, we found some secluded cobblestone streets in Greenwich Village where the two of them truly got to be themselves and enjoy the city to its fullest.

Hotel Bel Air Wedding from Docuvitae + Red25 Events

Before you even get swept up in all the lovely captured by the seriously talented folks at Docuvitae, promise me you’ll take some time to read the description from the Groom. Because his sweet words about his gorgeous Bride will make all the gorgeous details designed by R. Jack Balthazar and realized by Red25 Events even more amazing then they already are. Because you’ll know there is heart behind every touch. So yes, this is one chic Hotel Bel Air fête, but it’s also pretty darn special too. See it all here.

From the Groom…Let me start with this: Emily is the love of my life. She’s my best friend, my partner, my confidant. She makes me a better man, and I know that there’s nothing I can’t do with her beside me. When I first told my friends these things about her, they called her “Pegasus”. A woman this great seemed more likely to exist in mythical tales than in the real world. I assure you, she is very real.

Like most couples, when things started getting serious we asked each other lots of questions. Over and over my answer to her questions was the same: “Only always.” I don’t know what life will bring us, but I do know that we will do it together. Always.

When we first discussed getting married, we agreed that what is most important about a wedding is that it’s our opportunity to make a lifetime commitment to each other in front of our friends, family, and God.

I suggested we elope; I wanted to get married seven times – once on each continent and then come back to Los Angeles and have a big party. Emily politely acknowledged my romantic concept, but like most women she wanted a real wedding.

We wanted the wedding to be a reflection of us. Elegant but not showy. Chic but a little bit Rock and Roll. And we wanted everyone to have a really good time. We chose the team at Red25 events because from the first meeting they understood us (FYI, the wedding’s over – we’re now friends with these folks).

I let Emily handle the details of the wedding, because it’s girl’s stuff. What I can tell you is that after all was said and done we got exactly what we wanted from the very beginning. A celebration of our commitment and union. Only always.

Ojai Wedding Inspiration from Bash, Please + Bryce Covey Photography

There is wedding inspiration and then there’s wedding inspiration like this from Bash, Please and Bryce Covey. It’s the kind with gorgeous ideas that you can bundle up and apply to your big day. With a beautiful blending of bohemian details, blooms by Primary Petals and a crazy good collaboration of some of our LBB favorites including Fiore BeautyFound Vintage Rentals and Casa De Perrin, prepare to get inspired right here in the full gallery.

From Bash,PleaseWe discovered the quaint and hip Ojai Rancho Inn a few months ago and we were so excited about this property that we just had to spread the word. Prior to finding the venue, we knew we wanted to incorporate a Southwestern vibe into this photo shoot as the earthy elements of Ojai just beckoned for it. From there, we found inspiration from the geography of the venue, took in the natural views of Ojai and added in some colorful Southwestern inspired flair. We utilized an antique lace runner on the main dining table, and added lace touches to the terra-cotta pots we placed in other seating areas. The bride had her hair and makeup done by Fiore Beauty’s talented team and wore the Lita Gown from BHLDN with a dainty but colorful floral wreath made by Primary Petals. We used Casa de Perrin’s antique silverware, Navajo Collection and Amber Glassware for the main dining space to give the table an eclectic, textural feel. The napkins were each individually hand painted by us using the colors we created for the palette. Found and Yeah! Rentals provided us with a mix of tables, chairs, blankets and rugs incorporating leather, wood, kilim, and cotton that we used to create lounge areas placed throughout the property for a New Mexican feel. We designed the custom invite suite with a traditional Navajo pattern to echo the Southwestern ideas. The ranch style red wall near the pool was a vibrant backdrop to shoot the couple against (great for a first look) and a huge inspiration to us in the planning process. We had so much fun styling and designing for this shoot and so grateful for the talented team we got to work with! We are dying to get back to Ojai Rancho Inn for our next out of town adventure, bachelor/bachlorette trips or a wedding!

From Primary Petals: We incorporated a mix of native southwestern plants with bright seasonal blooms (to evoke the tangerine and coral colors). As far as native plants go, they used succulents, cactus, foxtail, oregano, and desert acacia leaves. I used the best of the late spring season for the bright blooms, such as coral and light pink peonies, icelandic poppies (mainly because it’s illegal to use California poppies here), ranunculus, tulips, stock flower, snapdragon, and pincushion proteas. For texture I added silver cone protea, queen anne’s lace (to mimic the lace element of the shoot), veronica, and feathers. When all these plants and florals are incorporated  they evoke the masculine Southwestern style, but in a more feminine, bridal manner.

Behind the Blog with Damsel in Dior

Design is something I am completely, wholeheartedly, 100% comfortable with. But fashion? Fashion is one area in which I need a bit of guidance. Enter: Jacey. Her blog, Damsel in Dior, has long become my total go-to for wardrobe tips, styling ideas and fashion advice. So it was with great pleasure that I had the chance to pick Jacey’s brain and get to know the fabulous woman behind this incredible blog. Captured by our beloved Bryce Covey , there’s more behind the scenes peeks (including her strong-jawed pups) right here in the gallery!

SMP: Some words you live by?
Life is an echo. What you send out, comes back. What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get. What you see in others, exists in you. Do not judge so you will not be judged. Radiate and give love and love comes back to you.

SMP: Any guilty pleasures?
Dr. Pepper & Chicken Fingers with white gravy or ranch dressing, lots & lots of ranch dressing.

SMP: What did you think your dream job was before your dream job found you?
Growing up I wanted to be a veterinarian but quickly learned that it meant you actually have to perform surgery on animals which I didn’t have the stomach for. I still have so much respect for people who can work in this field, and those who volunteer with animals, because I truly believe they are angels.

SMP: What’s your favorite quote that describes your creative process?
My Granny used to say “Only boring people get bored.” Any time I am feeling a lack in creativity I try out a new hobby such as painting, sewing or even flying lessons to help spur a new idea or mood. It works everytime. “We lose ourselves in the things we love. We find ourselves there too”

SMP: If you had the opportunity to get a message across to a large group of people, what would your message be?
You can do anything if you really want it bad enough and work your hardest to accomplish it. I mean it, ANYTHING.

SMP: If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
Yes & No. I love my life and wouldn’t change a single thing about it. With that said, it would have been nice to tell my 18 year old self to minor in graphic design, move to Paris for a little while and possible work for Conde Nast {ha!}.

SMP: What is one piece of advice you would give to a blogger just starting out?
Set a schedule and be consistent with your posts. Whether it means you post once a day or once a week, consistency is key in what you are posting and what time of day you are posting. Your readers will appreciate knowing what they can expect by coming to your blog.

SMP: What is your favorite item in your home?
A box full of old love letters between my Granny and her husband pre and post WWII. Some date to 1939 and there are literally hundreds of notes back and forth during their courtship and marriage. On days I am feeling a little blue I slip into a cozy quilt and enjoy a conversation between my grandparents.

SMP: What’s your best tip for balancing work and personal life?
My mother has always told me that if you really love what you are doing it won’t feel like work. I feel so incredible lucky & blessed to do what I absolutely love to do and to have a husband who supports and understands it. I have created a job for myself that literally is my life, so for me there is always an equal balance because I love both equally. My work is personal and my personal becomes part of the blog so it all falls on the same scale that is Damsel in Dior. Sure there are date nights when I get cut off from thinking about or talking about Damsel in Dior, and there are days when I need to shut the computer down. I decide on a time to do this just like I decide when it is time to laundry: You just know.

SMP: What was the tipping point in your business that made you feel like your blog was going to thrive?
Well this question definitely helps me to believe it {ha!}. I still have yet to reach all of my business goals but from time to time there are a few tipping points that have encouraged me to forge ahead. One in particular was when Levi’s asked me to take part in an AD campaign.  I went from literally growing up on a cotton farm {my Dad is a farmer} that used to sell cotton to Levi’s to being featured in a Levi’s AD… it was a surreal moment where the stars aligned and I felt  “This is exactly what I was meant to do”

SMP: What is the hardest lesson in business you’ve ever learned?
You have to take the bad with the good. Not everyone is going to love you, no matter how hard you try, and that is okay. Look, if everyone liked the same things and dressed the same way then life would be pretty boring.

SMP: Stranded on a desert island question… what’s the one cocktail you would take with you?
Frozen Margarita {with salt}.

SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of trend time?
Black. Forever and always.

SMP: One thing every style savvy homeowner should have?
I cannot suggest kraft paper and bakers twine enough. It’s cheap and super stylish. Plus you can use it for pretty much anything (table cloth, wrapping paper, placemats, cooking, hanging pictures, notes, etc…}

SMP: If you could buy yourself a single gift of any cost, what would it be?
A Carrie Bradshaw style closet & all of its contents . . .still have to get me one of those ;)
