From Candice Benjamin PhotographyWe were inspired by the clean, snow-covered Rocky Mountains for this lovely bridal session. We wanted to inspire brides to think outside of spring + summer bridal sessions and to see how a little snow can make anything magical! Plus, we know that everyone has that perfect wrap hanging in their closet!

The styling was done by Candice Benjamin Photography and Lace + Lilies. Candace of Dotted with Hearts created the fabulous bridal makeup look. Lace + Lilies created a beautiful flower crown and bouquet that could easily be also used as a table arrangement, as well as a simple floral garland for a repurposed vintage chair.

Soft + Romantic Colony House Boudoir Session

I love weddings inside and out, every moment, detail, smile and scene. But the images that always seem to turn on the swoon-factor the most? Those would be the getting ready moments—when the air is full of anticipation. Those moments result in the prettiest of portraits, like these from Krista Mason. A Bride fancied up by Kacee Geoffroy, with her foraged bouquet crafted by Krista Jon, leaving a whole gallery of gorgeous to peruse.

From Krista Mason PhotographyThis is a beautiful lace robe that is perfect for the bride that is getting ready for her wedding day. Neutral Colored Texas Hill Country Wedding

Color fanatics, this wedding is out to prove that all-neutral color palettes can be anything but boring. Layered in taupes, ivories and grays, it’s what happens when a couple sets out to plan a timeless Sunday wedding with a healthy dose of Southern elegance and grace. Loft Photography captured the day in all its gorgeous splendor, and the film by Wes Raitt is like icing on the cake.

We adore so many things about this wedding – the bride’s gown, her heirloom veil, the neutral florals (curated by the bride & her bridesmaids), and the intimate tented reception – to name a few! DIY Valentine Wand

If you have a little mini you are planning on showering with Valentine’s gifts this Saturday, these wands will most definitely do the trick. A golden sequin heart and a trail of fringe for the little lady in your life. We can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate love day; except maybe crafting an adult version? We won’t judge!

MaterialsWooden dowels
Foam heart stickers
Sequin trim
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
Scissors
Fringing scissors
Tissue paper
Gold foil tissue
Gold twist ties

instructions

step-1Cover two foam hearts in sequins. Beginning on the outside of the heart shape, hot glue on a strand of sequins around the edge. When you reach the beginning, move the strand slightly more towards the center of the heart and just keep going around until you reach the center. Trim the excess sequins and glue in place.

step-2Cut tissue paper and foil tissue into 3”x7” pieces. Fringe both ends of the rectangles, leaving about two inches in between unfringed.

step-3Roll one sheet of fringed paper into a thin cigar shape. Twist the center section into a tight, twisted rope. Fold in half, then twist the two ropes together in the opposite direction of how they were twisted the first time. Having trouble visualizing? Check out the instructions here.

step-4Tie three twist ties together to form a long chain. Tie on 7-8 tassels, twisting after each tassel to keep it in place. Hot glue the top of the tassel chain to the top of the wooden dowel.

step-5Peel the adhesive off the backside of the hearts and stick together around the wooden dowel. Repeat steps 1-5 to make as many wands as you like, then hand out to all the little Valentines in your life!

Winter Wonderland Engagement Session

This stunning engagement session? Well, it’s got me willing to brave freezing temps for a similar outcome. Surrounded by snowflakes, these scarf wearing sweethearts share cocoa and kisses, the result? Pure winter perfection. Jeremiah And Rachel Photography were behind the lens and snapped up every winter wonderland worthy moment here.

From Jeremiah And Rachel Photography… Aly and Nick are two beautiful souls, engaged, and embracing the snow Montana brings our way. We planned for their engagement session to set the tone for their upcoming Winter Wedding, and I think we got just that! It was practically a blizzard the entire time, but we didn’t mind as long as we got to warm up periodically! The snow was enchanting and we felt like we were in a giant snow globe as Aly and Nick snuggled a little closer together to stay warm. Both of them with their dark hair and porcelain skin looked like a fairy tale. I was half expecting Mr. Tumnus from Narnia to walk around the corner with his umbrella and parcels.

Snowy Colorado Engagement Session

I find snow to be super romantic and cozy. Ok, so maybe that’s how I trick myself into surviving the endless winter we’re having in New England, but I think Katie Parra would agree with me. Her pics of this adorable couple’s engagement shoot are sure to inspire some outdoor affection, and while I still may prefer to stay bundled up on my couch, these pics are guaranteed to warm me right up.

From Katie Parra Photography… Two days before Christmas I had the pleasure of photographing Jon and Susan in my hometown of Littleton, CO. Jon is a childhood friend of mine and when he asked if I would photograph his wedding I couldn’t have been more excited! Jon and Susan met while attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Susan now works for the State Department and Jon has just started medical school….needless to say they are crazy busy. So I was excited when Jon mentioned he was going to be bringing Susan to our hometown for Christmas. I hopped on a plane and flew to Denver and was given the most beautiful snowy day as our backdrop for their engagement session. I have a friend who lives on the most magical piece of property up Deer Creek Canyon and was so thankful she allowed us to shoot up there. Jerry Lee her German Shepherd decided to join in on our fun, as well as a few looky-loo deer! Jon and Susan are such a great match…let’s just say I didn’t have to coach them on when to kiss and when to smile…they did lots of that all on their own. I can’t wait for their wedding next July at the Naval Academy!

Romantic Toronto Hunt Club Wedding

Weddings never fail to make me gush (obviously), but every so often I come across a day so special I can feel the love through the computer screen. This wedding from Meghan Andrews Photography is just such a fête. Romantic and timeless, yet personal and sweet – this gallery if gush-worthy to say the least.

From The Bride…Our story began when a mutual friend introduced me to “the perfect guy” for me and boy was she right! Just over 3 years into our relationship Adam proposed to me at the top of a mountain overlooking Machu Picchu, after 5 amazing days of hiking through the Andes. Our friend has since retired with a perfect match making record!

It took us a little while to decide what wedding style would suit us best. With so many beautiful examples and inspirations out there, it was easy to get confused. Luckily, after scouting out many types of venues, we discovered The Toronto Hunt which immediately felt like the perfect place for us. We fell in love with the building’s classical elegance and absolutely breathtaking views of Lake Ontario; specifically the outdoor ceremony location, which is situated right on the Scarborough bluffs. The location was a perfect complement to our underlying theme “It’s a Shore thing”, which is a nod to Adam’s last name. From the moment we first walked through the archway, to the wrought iron altar with the lake behind us and the sun peeking through the trees, we knew this was where we had to get married. Not only was the venue beautiful but the food and service were amazing! The general manager wowed the crowd with his sabering technique and added a unique touch that got everyone in the mood to celebrate!

I really enjoyed putting together the special touches for our day, from sewing table runners, crafting up a storm for our birdcage inspired card box and other décor items, ordering custom made invitations with lace accents, to slowly collecting vintage side plates from family and antique shops to be used as table numbers. We had vintage chalkboards painted in pale orchid and ivory on which my mom handcrafted beautiful chalk-art messages like “Happily Ever After Begins Here”. I also wanted guests to understand the importance of certain details to us, so I included hand written notes and chalkboard messages throughout the venue asking them to blow bubbles as we walked down the aisle, enjoy our favourite cocktail (a spicy Caesar), or to put on a party hat and let loose (a Grant family tradition). Of course I also couldn’t resist hanging a handmade “Match Maker” sign on our friend’s chair!

Although we had many light-hearted elements peppered throughout the day, the most fun had to be the midnight buffet which was themed as “Shore’s Poutinerie”, a cheeky parody of my husband’s all-time favourite Poutinerie in Toronto. Our paper boxes were lined with red-checkered wax paper and featured his face on a custom logo. We also hired a Slo Mo video booth to entertain our guests and act as a hilarious keepsake!

We made sure to include many other special touches like the vows we wrote for one another and my “something blue” which was a butterfly brooch my grandma had given me when I was young, nestled into the stem of my bouquet which was also wrapped in lace from my mother’s wedding gown. We had personal notes to our parents embroidered on handkerchiefs for their happy tears, our parents’ wedding photos displayed by our guestbook, and had a lovely toast dedicated to Adam’s father who passed only a few short months before the wedding.

For a girl who never fantasized about her wedding day as a child, I certainly lucked out because our wedding day was an absolute fairy tale from start to finish. Adam and his groomsmen started off their day with brunch at a local hotspot and toasted their way through getting dressed. While the girls and I leisurely got ready upstairs in our silk robes, taking funny selfies along the way. I remember seeing Adam from the window and saying “I’m so ready to marry that guy!” I walked down the aisle with my father to “Here comes the sun” played by a solo guitarist as butterflies circled us all. My bridesmaids wore soft orchid, floor-length dresses and the men wore charcoal grey Vera Wang tuxes with polkadot pocket squares. We had stunning bouquets of soft white hydrangeas, garden and kiera roses, ranunculus and baby’s breath. The altar was swathed in a sheer and flowing white fabric; and the aisle was lined with small white hydrangea arrangements. The ceremony was personal and private; we had time to look around at all of our wonderful guests who surrounded us, as our friends read passages we selected. Adam and I walked back down the aisle together to “We’re here for a good time” by Trooper (played again on the guitar) as our family and friends blew bubbles and cheered.

Elegant Maryland Wedding at Historic Oakland

Timeless, elegant and all around perfect, this absolutely stunning wedding at Historic Oakland captured by Elizabeth Fogarty has my heart today. This gorgeous couple will be able to look back on their wedding decades from now with the same adoration they do today, and to me, there is nothing better than that. See the entire day here.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/109132209 600 338]

From The Bride…I picked the venue because it is what I always dreamed of since I was a child. It was elegant and that is what I always wanted for my wedding. I wanted my wedding to be timeless and elegant. Something that I could look back on and still love. My favorite part was when I walked down the isle and I saw Rocky. And when my father lifted my blusher veil was super special too. My inspiration came from a mixture of my dreams and through searches on Pinterest. From Elizabeth FogartyDanielle’s wedding could not have been more classic and timeless. She does make-up as a hobby, so she did her own make-up, and if I say so myself, totally rocked it! Her intimate ceremony was simply beautiful and filled with close friends and family.

Romantic Alfresco Maui Wedding

It almost goes without saying weddings in Hawaii are gorgeous, I mean it is paradise after all. Sprinkled with shades of pastel, Belle Destination Weddings designed next level pretty with Bella Bloom Floral Boutique bouquets and Opihi Love rentals. Every image in the Gina Meola captured gallery has oceanside heaven written ALL over it, see it all here!

From the beautiful Bride… Our planning process was relatively easy, once we found Lena at Belle Destination Events, as she coordinated everything for us. We spent a lot of time talking with her about our likes/dislikes, which she used to create the perfect event.

Given that our family and friends were spread across the country and overseas, more than half of our guests would have to travel, regardless of where the wedding was held. We also considered venues in Napa and Sonoma, near where we live, but nothing struck us as “perfect”. When we realized we could afford a wedding in Hawaii, it became a natural choice. We really liked the idea of our wedding being a vacation for all of our guests, which insured they were all relaxed and truly enjoyed the event.

Without question, our wedding planner was our wedding’s MVP. She is a very classy person with strong attention to detail. Every one of her recommendations, including all of the vendors, was a success. We also are incredibly thankful for our photographers who are not only extremely talented but were also wonderful people to help us through the day. Finally, our venue was the perfect location – it was relaxed but elegant, with incredibly stunning scenery.

Our wedding planner took all the stress out of the event. While we were in constant communication regarding the details, she took care of all of the heavy lifting and ensured our wedding was a success. One disappointment that we did experience was that a number of our invited guests were unable to attend due to the time and expense associated with a destination wedding in Hawaii.

The “first look” was the most personal part of the day for us, as not only was it our first chance to see each other before the ceremony, but we also used the opportunity to share our personal vows with each other, prior to sharing them in front of all of our guests during the ceremony. As the sun was setting, just the two of us went off with our photographers, which ended up being a magical experience. Just the two of us, as husband and wife, under the palm trees and beside the ocean as the sun was setting over Lanai and Molokai – the photos are so incredible that it’s hard to believe they are real!

Finally, the entire evening went by so quickly that we hardly had a chance to enjoy the setting that the planner had put together. At the end of the night after all of the guests had left, just the two of us were able to sit on a beautiful Victorian sofa on the lawn and enjoy how stunning everything had been.

My advice to future brides is to take time to enjoy the entire wedding experience. It’s a truly special time and it goes by much too fast.

Intimate Summer Wedding at Sunnyside Plantation

This wedding takes the cake when it comes to intimate celebrations…and actual cake as well. This couple said their “I do’s” at Sunnyside Plantation and then ate, drank and danced the day away in their own perfect fashion, complete with tailgating, food trucks and bike rides, not to mention an assortment of drool-worthy cakes. Our Labor of Love captured it all and my sweet tooth found paradise right here.

From The Bride… When Steve and I set out to plan our wedding the word that most inspired us was ‘intimate’. We knew we wanted a small wedding with only our closest friends & family their with us… those people who had been so special to us that we couldn’t imagine getting married without them being present. In keeping with that idea, we wrote our own invitations and wedding ceremony (fortunately for me Steve is a writer.) We stuck with only those traditions that felt meaningful to us and tried throughout the ceremony to show our love and gratitude not only for each other but for those gathered with us.

Besides two flower girls and a ring bearer, we opted against having a wedding party. Instead we tried to find special ways for our family to participate in the day. My older sister did the play list for after the band finished, my younger sister gathered the things for the “something borrowed, something blue, etc” tradition (the something borrowed was my mother’s engagement diamond which she had given my older sister… that one really got me) and my baby sister and her husband sang during the ceremony. I asked her to not reveal the songs she had chosen so that was another very special moment for me to hear the words my sister chose for me to walk down the aisle to. One of Steve’s sister served as the coordinator for the ceremony and his other sister and her daughter surprised us with our going away. (They threw colored bird seed mixed with lavender so it was pretty and smelled lovely… even as my nephew pelted us with whole satchels of it!) Steve’s brother and his wife, Mike and Paula Farish, own Fancy Frocks in Murrells Inlet so their role in our wedding was also very special. Paula and her daughter helped me select my wedding dress and gave us suggestions throughout the process for selecting our vendors. While my Dad and I looked on waiting for our turn, Steve himself escorted both of our Moms down the aisle. Steve’s other brother danced my Mom up the aisle as they exited after the ceremony (this moment was spontaneously and another one of my favorites of the day). It was also this brother who took a bite out of one of the wedding cakes before we had cut them. Could there been any more of a classic little brother moment than this?

While we headed off for pictures, our friends & family started lining up at the food truck. Having the food truck there was Steve’s idea and it worked out perfectly. The food was delicious and our guests didn’t have to wait on us to begin enjoying it. They could mingle when they wanted to mingle and eat when they wanted to eat. And we wanted to provide plenty of opportunities for our guests to just hang out with each other. Our families live coast to coast and very few of them had met before the weekend of our wedding so everyone was invited to a luau that Mike and Paula graciously planned for us the night before at their home and we had our wedding early in the day (ceremony at 11am) so they could spend time together the rest of the afternoon. The location had a lovely open yard leading down to the water where we set out yard games and had frisbees for everyone to play together.

As for the vendors, we couldn’t not have been more happy with who we were working with. I had an idea of the general theme I wanted for the wedding… relaxed, eclectic and yet elegant. I tried to express this theme to the people we were working with, showed pictures of what I had in mind when appropriate (thank you Pinterest!) and then let the professionals do their job. Because I hadn’t gone over every little detail and hadn’t asked for previews (except for a tasting… I would never turn down an opportunity to eat), the wedding day was full of surprises. It felt like getting presents all day long.

At the end of the day as we rode off on our bikes (we met riding bikes so this was Steve’s very appropriate idea for our departure), I felt like we got what we wanted.. a day for us to show our friends and family our tremendous love for each other and for each of them, a day to play together and a day to be grateful for all the amazing blessings we had received.

The funniest part of the day…. because we were having an early day wedding, we opted not to serve alcohol. Apparently my family disagreed with this plan so before the ceremony started, my sisters were serving Bloody Marys out of the back of their rental car (yes, our wedding was tailgated). After the ceremony, my brother-in-law was offering to spike everyone’s tea with a variety of liquors (I think he had some wine in there too) that he was carrying around in what would eventually be my nephew’s diaper bag (my sister was pregnant at the time). My dad didn’t even try to be subtle. He just brought out his cooler full of beer. To me this was definitely a sign that the day had definitely gone well… families hanging out, doing what they wanted without it feeling stuffy or uptight. I loved it.

This Firefighter Pulled Off the Proposal of a Lifetime!

Valentine’s is still half a week away, but around these parts we’re already in the full romantic spirit. And thanks to one Boston firefighter who planned the cutest proposal EVER, we’re spending our morning swept up and teary eyed in the captures straight from First Mate Photo. What started as a gorgeous party put together by Lauren Wells Events and Pollen Floral Design, ended in a “Will you marry me?” when the ultimate party crasher came in through the window. Spoiler alert: she said yes!

From The Bride…A month earlier I was sitting on my best friend’s stoop and she said we ought to have a party and I would help her co-host, little did I know I was helping her to plan the proposal! Hours before our guests are set to arrive, she confirms the time, and Mike tells me he has been detailed over to another fire house, one that I know does not relieve early. So he will be late to the party.

I go on up to Katherine’s always beautiful home, and wow! There are three women who have designed and adorned the house with my favorite colors – pink and gold. Her mantle is arranged with beautiful peonies, there is even a pink instant camera, pink quartz! Heaven! We both agreed to hire a caterer and there she is in the kitchen, making the teeniest and cutest miniature versions of the things – like hummus cups in shot glasses.

She asks me to go downstairs to put a sign on the door that it’s open and to come on up. My brother and his fiancee arrive! My high school friends! And my girlfriend who came from her honeymoon! There are 14 people in her apartment hugging each other hello, drinking and noshing when all of a sudden we learn there has been a kitchen fire upstairs.

Then a few big bangs on our door and enters a handsome, massive imposing firefighter with blue steely eyes. He is so serious! My god I was intimidated. I see his cover/hat and it’s the same ladder as Mike’s, and I ask, “Do you know Mike?”

“Y’know, Woody?” in his big Boston accent, he says he’s been detailed out. Then, my brother grabs me to come into a the office, off the main room. I hear, “Everything alright boys?” and there is my man, coming through the white curtains in his full bunker gear. Mike takes a small wooden box from his coat and gets down on one knee. His voice is trembling and he says, “You are my best friend, will you make me the happiest man, will you marry me?” I just keep nodding my head, saying yes and I give him a huge hug! And I put out my right hand – the wrong hand! Ha!

The first person I turn to see after Mike and my brother is his mum, his father, brother and sister and my parents and then holy smokes, my college friend from NYC. The most important people in my life.

And here it is, I met him when I was 16 and immediately knew then that there was something special about him. He is my soul mate, my love and my home. He grounds me, makes me the best version of myself – confident, daring and smart, and allows me to be myself, vulnerabilities and all.

I am so lucky to keep the company of such wonderful, generous and loving people who make magic! They brought me to the moon that night on a bed of stars.

Romantic Valentine’s Breakfast Inspired Shoot

Grand gestures of love are fab, but sometimes something as simple as breakfast for two in your own backyard can be the best way to celebrate Valentine’s. Take it from wedding experts Nancy Liu Chin and her husband Kevin Chin, who are showing us a sweet way to start the holiday of love. A few simple decorations, a tray of goodies and a romantic breakfast oasis is the name of this game.

[dotted]

SET THE MOOD

[dotted]

Before the big Valentine’s day surprise, set the mood. Even if you have a simple room, adding a few deep coral, red, and brick accents to your room will set the stage for your morning surprise. I found these lovely pillows at Target. Set against plain and crisp white furnishings, it adds a playfulness to the space.  And of course, add a little “heart” to your door frame to make any room a little more special. This DIY heart is easy to make. Find a pre cut foam heart.  Add some ribbon to it in a criss cross fashion.  You will need some double side tape or glue to put it all together and you have yourself a hanging ornament — Hearts All Aflutter!

[dotted]

TRAY OF GOODIES

[dotted]

Start off your day with a simple surprise. How about a tray of goodies? Find a simple tray. I love this wooden tray. You can find trays at many department stores or home decor boutiques. Pick on that is versatile like this one.

Put some bottles of sparkling water or glasses of juice to start the morning right. Add some small presents. Perhaps a small bundle of notebooks. I found these at Target and think they are full of brightness. Give these to the one you love and let them use the journals for whatever they want. Perhaps fill them with recipes or document your love story in them. A little sweet twine finishes them off. It’s easy to decorate and make them look like you spent a lot of effort(though it’s very easy to do!).

[dotted]

CREATE A BREAKFAST OASIS

[dotted]

Now, while your sweetie is waking up with his/hers morning water or juice, create a sweet oasis. Set a table in your backyard, cozy terrace or courtyard with some simple flowers or plants, dress it up with some valentine hearts. Bring in bold red hues in bright red plates filled with pastries. Adding some fresh fruit adds a nice touch. Perhaps the morning paper could use a little dressing up — how about wrapping it up with pink ribbon. This will surly bring a smile (or a kiss!)

[dotted]

A ROMANTIC CENTERPIECE

[dotted]

For the centerpiece, you need not be a pro to create this simple display of flowers. Any plant shop, nursery, or local home store will have sweet plants. I picked a primrose. In addition to the plant, I found simple milk glass. With red yarn, I twined it to create a festive and tempting vase. A little Peruvian lilies and voila – you have a sweet centerpiece.

[dotted]

ALL IN THE DETAILS

[dotted]

To finish the setting without doing a lot of work, I thought a heart garland would do the trick. This pretty Threshold garland of hearts is a great place to hang the “Be Mine” card.

No matter what you do, remember to cherish the one you are with and start the day off well.

Valentine’s Day is a great day to celebrate romance, love, and affection. Why not start your day off right. This wonderful shoot hopes to inspire that inner romantic in you.

Colorful Late Fall Countryside Inspiration Shoot

Living in New England comes with plenty of perks, but best one? Watching the foliage on a perfectly crisp fall day. Inspired by the changing leaves and rich hues, Ashley Caroline set out with Ashley Drago Botanicals and Jennie Fresa to capture a cozy countryside day. Complete with floral crowns, warm blankets, and lots of lace, this gallery has me looking forward to savoring the season.

From Ashley Caroline PhotographyWe were inspired by crisp weather and cozy blankets, a horse farm, pomegranates and fall berries, loose braids and dainty flower crowns all while achieving simplicity with pops of color. We also had a custom cape made for the Bride to cover her shoulders and protect her from the cool seasonal weather.

We created different looks to provide an abundance of inspiration primarily surrounding how to keep warm during the cool weather while adding interest to the eye and pops of color that reminds us of a modern day Fall.

Rustic Winter Farm Wedding of Chris Thile + Claire Coffee

Romantically cozy—that’s what we’re deeming this Christmastime fete. Snapped up by Viera Photographics, it’s a day full of heart and warmth, and at the center of it all are two sweet and talented souls. The handsome Groom who just happened to score a Grammy last night. Congrats Chris! And the stunning Bride, Claire, whose character we all love watching on NBC’s Grimm. From good friend Rob of Bon Iver filling the air with music to Claire’s vintage dress, each moment will charm you, guaranteed.

From the Bride… We met in New York in 2011 at a dinner party in Brooklyn, a set-up by our mutual friend, Alex Boling. I was living in LA at the time and Chris was living in the East Village in New York. We dated long distance until the following spring, when I moved to New York full time. Portland is now our home base since I have to be there to shoot Grimm and Chris tours most of the year.

We were married December 23rd at Blackberry Farm, a rustic resort in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and our favorite place on earth. Chris has played for many special events over the years, and it was the first place he took me on getaway as a couple. We’ve become great friends with so much of the staff that the place now feels like home.

There were 20 people total in attendance at the wedding…Our immediate family and grandparents, plus Chris’ best friend Rob Moose (Bon Iver), who played Bach’s 3rd movement of the C Major Sonata for solo violin for my walk down the aisle. I wore a vintage lace gown from 1937, purchased at Xtabay Vintage Bridal Salon in Portland, in the 11th hour. Chris’ touring schedule and my hiatus schedule made scheduling a wedding difficult… It was either the upcoming Christmas holiday or a year and a half from that Christmas, and I was just didn’t have the patience to wait that long. Also, the idea of spending an efficient but nutty three months planning sounded better than stressing about an event for over a year! Such a short timeline eliminated the custom order gown option, so I started scouring the racks.

I’m a frequent shopper at Xtabay, a vintage dress boutique in Portland, and the girls there know me and my taste fairly well. That lace gown had just arrived to the vintage bridal salon – they hadn’t even put it out on the rack yet – and it fit like a very delicate glove. Erin Schmitz, their marvelous seamstress, stitched up and reinforced some of the lace that had fallen apart over the years so that we were assured it would make it at least through the ceremony. I called it the James Bond dress, since it was bound to self-destruct immediately after the ceremony (it made it to the end of the night, but just barely!) The veil was vintage tulle sewn onto a 50’s era Juliette cap, also from Xtabay.

I did my own hair and makeup on the day, after getting some coaching from our Grimm makeup artists.Chris’ dark brown wool suit was custom made by Against Nature, a bespoke suit shop in New York City.

My sister Abbie officiated the ceremony, which we wrote by cobbling together pieces of old and traditional ceremonies. Our vows came from an old Irish ceremony I found and absolutely fell in love with:

By the power that Christ brought from heaven, mayst thou love me.
As the sun follows its course, mayst thou follow me.
As light to the eye, as bread to the hungry, as joy to the heart,
May thy presence be with me, Oh one that I love, ’til death comes to part us asunder.

Flowers were by Leah Teague of Flourish Floral, a local Knoxville designer, who created the gorgeous archway to Yallerhammer Pavilion.

Dinner was in the wine cellar at Blackberry Farm’s The Barn at Blackberry Farm. The menu featured grilled Carolina shrimp, guinea and dumplings and local Border Springs Farm lamb. The cake was a rich dark chocolate made by the Blackberry Farm pastry team, with mint chocolate chip ice cream, Chris’ favorite. Andy Chabot, Blackberry Farm’s wine director and a friend, curated a wine pairing using our favorite varietals and vintners.

We drank our first toast from my Grandmother’s Welsh Drinking cup, a tradition that’s been in the family for longer than I know!

Post dinner we retreated to one of the cottages for port and stilton cheese, fried black eyed peas and christmas carols accompanied by Chris, Rob, and my mother on flute (something she hasn’t done in at least a decade!).

We stayed on at Blackberry Farm after the wedding for Christmas with our family.

Romantic Parisian Destination Wedding

To say this wedding is something out of a fairy tale is to put it lightly. From pre-ceremony photos all over Paris, to a reception aboard a private boat by the Eiffel Tower, dreams don’t get much better than this. One & Only Photography and Le Secret D’Audrey captured every breathtaking moment that Fete in France created, and as we wrap up this Monday, I can think of no place I’d rather be than right here.

From Fête In France… Jasmina & Maurice came to Fete in France from Switzerland to plan their intimate Parisian wedding. The couple selected the gorgeous and glamorous Shangri-La in Paris to host both their ceremony and dinner reception.

The hotel benefits from a location near the Eiffel Tower and many of the suites have a lovely view on this iconic monument. Jasmina had a suite with a view for her hair and makeup preparation.

The couple decided to do their photos before the ceremony around the city with the very talented One & Only Paris Photography. After a sweet first look they were whisked away in a vintage white Rolls Royce for photos around the city. After the shoot the couple met back up with their bridal party at the Shangri La for the ceremony. The ceremony was held in one of the historic private salons of the hotel which features high ceilings, fireplace, beautiful hardwood floors and lots of gilding. The couple, being multilingual, chose to incorporate French, German and English into their ceremony. The bride carried a bouquet of pink peonies and white garden roses. When the ceremony was finished guests showered the couple in rose petals as they headed to their cocktail hour.

The champagne cocktail hour was held on the terrace with spectacular views of the Eiffel Tower. After cocktail hour everyone headed into the Grand Salon for dinner at one long table which was filled with pink, peach and white flowers, which accented the soft gold in the room perfectly. For dinner they had a traditional French meal and the couple was toasted by close friends and family. Each guest was treated to a box of Laduree macarons at their seat. After dinner the couple cut the three-tiered cake and headed out for dancing and cocktails on their private boat. As they left the Shangri La guests held confetti guns which showered the couple in gold colored confetti as they headed to the boat. They then embarked on a moonlit cruise of the Seine where the couple shared their first dance and enjoyed cocktails with guests. They enjoyed a two hour cruise while dancing to a DJ as the monuments of Paris sailed by.

Quintessential Vintage English Wedding at Burloes Hall

After perusing this ridiculously wonderful gallery from Belle And Beau Fine Art Photography, I’ve decided I’m going to tuck this wedding away in a little corner of my heart and hold it there forever. That’s how much I love it so. It’s happy, sweet, fun, charming and oh-so-adorable. From the bow ties and bowler hats to the vintage photo pendants and pastel petals, it will melt your heart in an instant.

From Belle And Beau Fine Art Photography… I wanted to send you this beautiful quintessentially English wedding as it not only has beautiful details (including the most beautiful Summer bouquet and the boys wearing bowler hats) and a gorgeous couple but the story behind it is a truly romantic one!

Like something straight out of an old English romance novel, Ben and Sarah’s outdoor wedding was held at the beautiful Burloes Hall in Cambridgeshire where Sarah’s Grandparents met! Her Great Grandparents lived in the Gamekeeper’s cottage on the Estate, which is where her Grandad, Son of the Head Gamekeeper, met her Nan who was the Housemaid A true Downton Abbey story!

From the beautiful Bride… My Grandparents met at Burloes. My Great-Grandfather was the Head Gamekeeper, taking over from my Great-Uncle. They lived in the Gamekeeper’s Cottage on the Estate, in which my Grandfather also lived. My Nan was the Housemaid. The story goes that, my Nan needed to post some mail for Lady Joan Newman – the Lady of the Estate – and it was suggested that my Granddad accompany her. The rest, as they say, is history!

We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding if possible – our dream wedding has always been that of Forest Gump and ‘his’ Jenny. We looked at a couple of local venues: big houses with even larger gardens. My Grandfather had not long passed away when we got engaged and was always on my mind. Randomly, I searched for ‘Burloes’, and ‘weddings’ and to my utter delight I found a website for the Burloes Hall – and they did weddings!

I’ve always wanted a Spring wedding (the gorgeous blossom and spring flowers, sense of new life and warm glimmer of the sun… all before the streaming noses and itchy eyes of Summer kicks in!). We both love the ‘good old days’. The décor, the fashion and the slower pace of life. Our home together is filled with family heirlooms and vintage treasures we’ve found together over the years. garden party theme for our wedding just felt like the right fit for us.

I was so nervous about dress shopping. I rarely wear dresses, and don’t particularly relish the limelight. So I wanted to feel special, but ultimately comfortable. I knew I wanted a high neckline and wanted to show off my small waist. Lace was a key feature too. The rest I was pretty clueless about.

I went with my mum and bridesmaids and we hit three shops in one day. The last shop was Morgan Davies and was the only shop I actually got excited in! I found six beautiful dresses, each one more beautiful than the last. I chose ‘Willow’ by Maggie Sottero bringing in all the elements I like into one dress. My veil was ‘Orlando’ by Joyce Jackson. 1 inch scalloped lace edge, 72 inch two-tier veil. My shoes were gold sparkly heels from Next!

My Grandad’s bracelet was my ‘Something Old’, my Mother’s pearl and diamond drop earrings were my ‘Something Borrowed’, my lace garter with blue ribbon bow was my ‘Something Blue’ and my Dress was my ‘Something New’! The vintage photo pendants, hanging from my bouquet featured photos of my grandparents.

My Photographer was Holly from Belle and Beau Fine Art Photography. Simply put, Holly was brilliant. I got so excited the moment I found her website and had to email her straight away. As soon we spoke on the phone I knew she was the one for us. Photography was a big thing for us, we didn’t want the usual style of photos with lots of staged shots and forced smiles. We wanted natural shots which captured the happiness of the day, the guests and the venue. We loved Holly’s style of soft pastels and artistic compositions. We can’t recommend her enough!

Holly, and her husband Phil, were just perfect on the day. They made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera and [in the nicest possible way] forgot they were there at times! The rest of the time they were just so lovely and we had a lot of laughs together. Some of our favourite shots were taken there, capturing the golden light of the sunset. It was just magical. We are so thankful to Holly for giving us such timeless memories, her photos are a true gift which we will treasure always.

Our florist was Noeleen Ross from the The Basement Florist. Flowers were a big part of our day. The vintage theme really came to life through the British country cottage style flowers and flower arrangements, many of which were locally grown. Noeleen was a dream to work with. She was so friendly and understood exactly what I wanted straight away.

We made our rings ourselves! I made Ben’s and he made mine, at a one-day jewelery-making workshop with Rachel Jeffrey Contemporary Jeweler.

Our wedding favours were, again, very much homemade! Can you guess the emerging theme?! These were little felt scrabble tiles with each of the guest’s first name initials. We wanted something a bit quirky and that would help act as place settings too. I grew up with my Granddad and Dad playing scrabble as a weekly ritual and so this ‘felt’ like the right thing for us (see what I did there!), to honour that memory really. Two birds and all that – or in this case three! My very talented sister, Samantha, hand sewed all the little felt squares with the letters and my Mum sewed on the pins. We were so proud to see everyone happily putting on their pins as soon as they sat down – it just added to the fun and relaxed feel of the day.

There were so may favourite parts to our day! Other than being pronounced ‘Husband and Wife’ (obviously!), for me the speeches were a highlight, and dancing to the band with my friends and family. The eco-friendly lanterns where great too – we wanted fireworks but with farm animals in the fields nearby it wouldn’t have been appropriate. The lanterns turned out to be even better in the end! For Ben, it was driving the vintage Morris Minor ‘Rosie’ with the tin-cans rattling away behind us and home-made ‘Just Married’ sign my Dad made – people were ‘tooting’ their horns and smiling and waving at us all the way! We felt like old fashioned film stars!

My advice for other brides:

– Get a budget in place, well before you fall in love with any suppliers. We had an idea of budget, but didn’t have a confirmed figure in mind. We were lucky to have a lot of help from our parents but no figures were set in stone from the start.

– Also, don’t expect to have your dream wedding on a small budget. I’ve seen on various blogs about couples doing it for £5K – well to me that just isn’t anywhere near realistic.

– Don’t wait until you’ve found the venue/set the date before looking into other suppliers. Do your research and get the details of the suppliers you want, with a couple on a backup list, so that when you’ve found the venue and set the date you can contact them straight away – suppliers get booked up so far in advance these days!

– Be specific with your requests to suppliers. Though this may vary depending on your approach to ‘control’ over your wedding arrangements. I had quite specific images in my mind of how I wanted things set out.

Colorful Fall Bear Flag Farm Wedding

It’s not every day we get to hear a love story straight from the Groom but this sweet wedding includes just that. From an invitation to lunch and eventual date six months later, these two were destined from the start and celebrated their Big Day with as much love to match. From whimsical design moments orchestrated by Tina Reikes of Bear Flag Farm to the vintage ferris wheel that ran through the night, there’s a million reasons to love this day and Elizabeth Messina captured them all to utter perfection.

From The Groom…Vanessa and I met in what really feels like a past life. We were friends and had an instant chemistry. The first night we met was at a holiday party. She was a cocktail waitress and kept my glass and interest full all night. We never got a chance to fully explore the possibilities that night which left a lot of unanswered questions. Who would have known?

She gave me a business card that I held on to for a time. I used to “check in” with her. She knew a little about where I was in my life and I knew a little about where she was, but we never fully knew about each other. Only just enough to raise more questions, and pique more interest.

Eventually, when the time was right, I asked her for a lunch date. She responded with “happy to have lunch, in 6 months would be best”. I wrote down the date and in 6 months I called and we went to lunch. We talked for hours and got caught up on seven years of life. We followed that with a couple dinners, and eventually an out of town get-away on the west side of Manhattan at the Mandarin Oriental Spa. The rest of the story writes itself with many twists, turns and most of the garden still left to grow.

We met Tina Reikes, the owner and lead event designer at Bear Flag Farm, for lunch In New York City about 5 months prior to our wedding. In the end, she designed a unique and fabulous day that is hard to describe.

All of our guests raved about the location and the unique fairytale wedding that they were a part of. Bear Flag Farm illuminated perfection. Hosting an event at this elegant farm is a one-of-a-kind experience. Decor vignettes throughout the property artfully captured our passion and vision for the day. The table design was pure artistry; the food and the personal approach with which it was presented was flawless. The vintage ferris wheel, which was running the entire evening, stole the show! It was definitely a highlight for our guests. Tina took care of everything. The service was off-the-charts and the day, over the top with elegance and ambiance. The event unfolded in a seamless transition of events that you can’t describe in words, you can only feel it in the moment! We are grateful to have had our photographer, Elizabeth Messina, capture glimpses of perfection throughout.

Color palette was rich, ombre transitions throughout the wedding aisle, wedding backdrop and dinner table floral arrangements.

From The Bride…I woke up on my wedding day in such a calm state of mind, it made me worry that I wasn’t a worried enough bride! I had time to sit and reflect on the future course of the day. It brought to mind an early conversation I had with Tina about my wishes to “just show up to the most perfect wedding day.” (No pressure). One of the greatest reasons we chose to have a destination wedding was that we had the opportunity for someone else to arrange/manage the day. I didn’t want to oversee all of the little details going on. I wanted to be a “guest” at my very own wedding. (Is that rare?) Those must have been magic words to Tina, as I said I wanted to be surprised along with my guests. I did however have a creative vision in mind. That’s where Tina and I shared a Pinterest page full of expressive ideas. From that point, Tina, with her eye for high design and style, took over and I didn’t bat an eye! Perhaps this is why I could wake up and enjoy every moment of the day.

New York City Spring Engagement Session

This shoot takes us through a tour of some of New York City’s most stunning sights, as Alicia Swedenborg captures it all with this adorable couple. From views of the NYC skyline and the iconic Pepsi-Cola sign, to the blossoming cherry trees, we get a variety of scenes but one thing remains: the obvious love between these two. These pics are postcard worthy and the perfect memento for a day well spent.

From Alicia Swedenborg… Jennifer met Kevin through a mutual friend after paying for a six month subscription on eharmony…she didn’t really have a chance to use that dating website…He proposed on her birthday with all of her close friends. He bought her favorite cake from Lady M, and instead of saying happy birthday on the cake, it said “Will you marry me?”

Jennifer & Kevin live in Queens so we decided to do their engagement session there! We started by the blossoming cherry trees, got a little urban and then did a quick outfit change before we ended in Gantry Plaza State Park by the iconic Pepsi Cola sign and the sun setting behind the New York City skyline.

Mommy and Toddler Valentine Party

Valentine’s is the perfect excuse to let your love of pink fly free. Blush, hot, classic and red – it’s a Vday must. This fete crafted by sisters Marlan Willardson and Laurén LaRocca along with photography by One Eleven is draped in every shade of it. It’s a pizza, crafting, balloon filled extravaganza. One that toddlers and grown-ups can both appreciate and there’s even a gold kiddie pool. We’re sold.

DECOR

We can’t get enough of pink. So we went for it — in every shade we could find.
The neon pink “KISS” party favor bags by Meri Meri via Paper Source sent us into a tizzy, so we incorporated them into the tablescape to hold the “VALNTN” balloons.
The xo napkins, gold doilies, heart stir sticks, heart straws, tiny pink heart balloons, mini gold foil letter balloons and honeycomb diamonds are from Shop Sweet Lulu.
We DIYed the “HAPPY” piñata letters from an Oh Happy Day! tutorial.
The gold ballon pit is a cheap drugstore kiddie pool wrapped in gold duct tape.
The giant inflatable hearts and party favors are from Oriental Trading Company.

FLOWERS
We mixed peonies, anemones and ranunculus in pink, coral and magenta.

CAKE
We saved lots of money on our party budget by making the three layer naked cake ourselves. It’s a Pamela’s Vanilla Gluten-Free Cake Mix that we decorated with flowers.

FOOD
Heirloom LA did gluten-free pizzas with a choice of cured meats or vegetables. They also did a delicious crudité platter with homemade ranch and spinach dip.
Laurén made the fresh fruit tray with organic, seasonal finds from a local farmer’s market and melons from Whole Foods.
The meringues are from Bottega Louie.

CRAFT
We wanted something that wouldn’t intimidate non-crafters, so we opted for a simple feather mobile. We pre-painted the feathers in six different colors for guests to choose from, supplied driftwood, thread and twine, and voila!, moms and kids crafting together!
