From The Home Edit… Getting the opportunity to organize Jaime King’s closet was a dream come true. The closet design was beautiful, the clothing was incredible, the shoes and bags were to die for… but, it was positively overflowing. We were asked to come in and create some organizational solutions that would maximize the space and make it more efficient, while maintaining the elegance. Read on for some of the tricks we used.

Tips for a Celeb-Worthy Closet

The top of the closet has great storage space that was perfect for folded sweaters. We separated the sweaters out by color, and then used acrylic shelf dividers to keep the folded stacks upright and contained. An added bonus, the shelf dividers have a knob on the end where you can place a hanger. Perfect for incoming dry cleaning, or hanging an outfit while you’re getting dressed.

There were quite a few different categories of clothing (long dresses, short dresses, rompers, coats, sporty jackets, etc), so we used closet dividers on the hanging bars to separate the different sections. It makes it easier to find the clothes you’re looking for and easier to put clothing away. Since the dividers were just plain white, we added a chalkboard label to make it visually more appealing.

Jaime has about 10,000 pairs of jeans. That is only a slight exaggeration. And it’s hard to edit items out of her closet since every single thing looks good on her! The only solution was to devote a section solely for denim, and break them out into styles: Skinny, Flare, Distressed, etc. We labeled the side of each cubby for clear visibility, and folded them in half to maximize the depth of the space.

There were so many great handbags in Jaime’s collection, so we tried to separate by size and by use. Small shoulder bags, satchels / mid-size, and clutches. For the small bags, we were able to fit everything into the built in space, arranged by color. For the larger size bags, we used the top section above the long garments, and placed acrylic shelf dividers to hold the bags upright. The clutches received their own special drop-front linen box, and we displayed the Edie Parker custom clutch with Jaime’s son’s name through the window.

Jaime’s leather jacket collection was so extensive, and so incredible, that we gave them their own spot in the closet. Hanging directly above the clutch box, we separated the jackets by weight and color.

We were able to edit out quite a bit of clothing, but almost all of the shoes were keepers. How could you possibly get rid of a beautiful shoe? You kind of can’t. So our job was to maximize every possible square inch. We divided them out by color, and then put one shoe behind the other to utilize the depth and create more horizontal space. We also used these amazing Shoe Space Savers for her flats, that doubled the amount we could fit on the lower shelves.

One of Jaime’s staple looks is a Wolford bodysuit. It’s one of her favorite brands and we wanted to create a special dedicated space for it in her closet. We used the pull-out drawers, and included inserts to divide the Wolford pieces by category and color, and then labeled each drawer.

Sunglasses are like shoes – how do you get rid of any? The closet was built with a pull-out drawer for sunglasses, but we had to figure out a solution for overflow. We arranged the drawer by shape and color, and then pulled out our favorite gold glasses and put them in a box on top. This allowed us to manage the overflow, and still maintain the chic aesthetic.
We love the way the project turned out, and were so glad we could bring some order and function to what is already a beautiful space.
