How to Translate Your Personal Style Into Your Maternity Style

When it comes to bump style, Mara of M Loves M absolutely nailed it—did you see some of her pregnancy looks we featured? She’s got mad mama-to-be style, there’s no doubt about that. So today, we couldn’t be more thrilled to share these gorrrgeous photos from her sunlit maternity session with Jordan Zobrist, along with Mara’s tips on translating your personal style into your maternity style. And what’s more? Her sweet, sweet boy made his arrival last week! Congrats Mara & Matthew!!!

1. Find pieces that are flattering

Dressing a pregnant you is a lot different than dressing a regular you. Those high-waisted jeans and crop tops just don’t have the same appeal with a baby bump. Not to mention it might be impossible depending on how far along you are. Choose items that flatter your bump, whether it’s a peplum top or a more fitted silhouette. You can definitely go with roomier dresses but you might want to add a belt to accentuate your bump. You don’t want people to question whether or not you’re pregnant or just had a few too many burritos.

2. Go for Comfort

Now is not your time to suck it up in heels and uncomfortable outfits. Choose shoes with a manageable heel, or just reach for those flats! As your body is changing so does the fit of your clothes. While you might be able to find some non-maternity outfits that work, chances are you’ll need to invest in some good maternity basics, like tees and jeans.

3. Invest in Accessories

While you might not want to invest in those expensive maternity jeans, that designer handbag will work during and after your pregnancy. Take pregnancy as an opportunity to play up the accessories and add unique touches to your outfits. Even if you’re just in a tee and jeans, you can add a flowy kimono cardigan, cute sandals, and a wide brim hat.

Wedding Trends We Love: Circular Ceremony Seating

When A Day Like No Other is planning your wedding, you better believe there will be some special touches. One of our favorites? The circular ceremony seating that set the tone for an intimate, completely personal celebration. Gary Sexton photographed every moment waiting in The Vault.

From A Day Like No OtherThe couple Haneen and Anthony met during their Junior year at UC Davis (2008/2009). They both had transferred to the school that year. The bride’s roommate introduced the two; she had attended a Greek camp with the groom (who is of Greek heritage) when they were 10 or 12 yrs old. She ended up inviting him to the bride’s birthday celebration. A good half year after that first encounter, the two began dating.

They got engaged in December of 2014 and, after an 18-month courtship, got married in May 2016. A few things they absolutely wanted for their wedding: lots of good music, all of their friends, and LOTS AND LOTS of dancing!

The theme was “1920s light:” a mixture of the bride’s and the groom’s ideas. They were looking to mix it up in a world filled with mason jar weddings. So they decided to take a “light approach to Great Gatsby”. And the beautiful antique race car – actually, a treasured family heirloom – did come in handy to set the tone for this elegant celebration right at the venue entrance.

A Modern Military Love Story That Requires Waterproof Mascara

Warning dear readers, you probably won’t want to read this bride’s write-up if you’re in a public place. Or if you happened to skip out on waterproof mascara this morning. Trust me on this one, because I’m living proof that being in public when you’re a crying blubbery mess is anything but mesmerizing, but this wedding? Well it totally is. Captured by Becca Lea it’s the story of Claire and Christopher and it’ll have you feeling all the feels. See it all in The Vault!

From the Bride…How do you capture pure magic? Is it even possible? Are there words in the English language with the ability to tell of something so majestic and purely lovely as May 15th, 2016? Alas, I am unsure… but between my words and our talented photographer’s skillful eye, I hope the magic of that day is brought to life in your heart.

The beauty of May 15th, 2016 will never fail to take my breath away. There was a moment, as I could feel the crochet hook buttoning up my dress and the sound of film clicking when all a sudden the to-do lists filled with seating arrangements, playlists, work projects put on hold…you know…the details… simply faded. I let go of the months of preparation and joyfully slipped into the bliss of wedding day.

The forecast had been for a classic Texas thunderstorm and yet, the overcast sky held the promise of lovely May sunshine. I emerged from the little room on the side of the stately DeGolyer home to be greeted by squeals and giggles of the dearest friends in the world. Standing there in my favorite dress, everything was green and real and bright. There were my nine rocks, my best girls… who have held me, prayed with me, and shaped me into the woman I am today. They were an enchanting sight, all dressed beautifully in blush looking like they could easily slip into an Anthropologie themed Waltz of the Flowers dance. Although I love my girls, I was ready to see Christopher. You see… I can get quite nervous being the center of attention, but when he’s there… I’m ok, I’m secure, I feel safe. He helps me be brave and strong amongst a million other things… I now know the meaning of “my better half” because he is my better half. As I read his note to me, it was a mixture of depth, heart, soul, and jokes… you see, Christopher has this way of making me laugh… he always keeps me laughing.

Turning the corner and seeing him there in his uniform… oh my soul… my heart still skips a beat merely thinking about it. Our first look was one of those moments, the kind that’ll be iconic in our memories forever, that at any point in our lives, we could close our eyes and relive it because it’s that vivid and strong. I’ll never forget walking towards him, ever so delicately calling his name and nervously wondering what he’d think when he turns around. We had been anticipating this moment for months because you see… Christopher and I had been long distance for over two years, joyfully walking through seasons apart including a deployment and Ranger school. This moment was not only the first time we saw each other on our wedding day, but it was also the beginning of our lives together! No more goodbyes or goodnights… we had made it. Two years of distance done, let’s begin our lives together!

As the last guest was seated and the music began to play, my dad and I were escorted through the DeGolyer mansion and out the majestic front door to ensure no one saw me. It was the most elegant and calming walk before the whirlwind and magical night began. As two of our dear friends began to sing an acoustic version of “Multiplied” by Needtobreathe, my dad and I walked down the aisle towards my best friend, and as we were about halfway there, the clouds parted and a beautiful Texas sunshine shown down on all of our best friends and family… it was as if our best guest had just taken His seat. The beautifully crafted garlands brought a royal yet organic realness to where we stood. As we were led through our vows, all I can remember is joy, the purest form of it. Proclaiming in front of all that I will be his and he will be mine. We laughed and had mist in our eyes, but everything from the music, to the sunshine, to the tiniest detail on our communion table reflected the beauty of our marriage beginning. I remember feeling the wind blow my veil as it elegantly draped down the steps and seeing the sun hit flecks of blue and gold in his eyes. Dreamiest moment of my life.

As we turned around, I was ready to have some fun! Before the social butterfly part of the night began, Christopher and I were ushered to a private dinner in the rose garden to collect our thoughts and exclaim things to each other like “we’re married!!!” acting like two kids as we sampled the incredible food we had meticulously chosen for our beloved guests.

Looking around at the enchanting place where we were going to have the greatest party of our lives was surreal. Everything from the blush and gold accents to the romantic bistro lights made us feel like we were at a European midsummer’s medieval feast in the middle of a mystical forest – which is exactly what we had envisioned. We wanted to get married surrounded by life. What a more perfect place than a garden bursting with flowers, deep green vines, and the chirping of happy creatures? It was perfection. Our florals captured the natural, organic, effortless grace that I had desired and the large number of guests felt like a small gathering of friends under the cozy canopy of the tent and lights. I felt like a princess and as I glanced over at Christopher, I felt like Cinderella – all night long. I know that may sound cliché or may even a bit silly to some, but truly, I felt …that night… a kind of magic that I’d never experienced before.

Running into the romantic tent and being cheered on was exhilarating, making me wonder if everyone could hear my heartbeat as our first dance began. We had practiced and had laughed, but honestly, in that moment, we were just us – twirling, laughing, and soaking in the lyrics of “By Two” by Dave Barnes. The rest of the evening was filled with the hearts of others, hugging every soul that had come to celebrate us. Everything from the music, the lights, the food, the cake (best cake I’ve ever had – the dark chocolate sea salt cake captured my foodiness perfectly!), and Bailey’s milkshakes cooling us down as Uptown Funk came to a close was more than we could have ever hoped for.

Our last dance… the guests had been ushered to the entrance and there were were alone on the dance floor, my dress had turned gray on the bottom from dancing hard to favorites from Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson, my hair fallen, both of us… sweaty and messy from a night of celebration, his bowtie crooked from many hugs… and although the visual perfection of us had passed, the perfection was complete… we were married, we had celebrated with the best of people, and we were together… it had really happened… I got it all… all I’ll ever want… how did an imperfect, southern girl like me get so lucky? Perhaps it’s not luck, actually I know it’s not luck, but something infinitely greater. I’ve been given a precious gift…life with Christopher… a servant hearted, brave leader, humble explorer, thoughtful philosopher, American hero… I could go on, but as my soul sister Jane Austen would say, he is “everything a young man ought to be.” And he’s mine.

As we walked out into a sea of American flags waving, Christopher dipped me low and kissed me, making me feel more iconic than the girl dipped in New York City on V-Day. As we drove away, I began to cry in an overflow of emotion after all that had taken place. The only words I could muster to my husband, my dear Christopher was “I’m so happy… I’m just so happy.”

The Perfect Cityscape Café Wedding

Just when I thought I’d seen it all, this Midwest wedding sneaks up behind me to surprise. Because when you take a cafe wedding set in the heart of Chicago, you know you’re in for something major. Add in the massively talented Jacqui Cole Photography and Toast and Jam and you’ve got it all on lock. See it all in The Vault!

From Jacqui Cole PhotographyMatt and Teresa wed at the iconic Cafe Brauer in the heart of Lincoln Park, Chicago. Teresa wanted understated, elegant details with bold pops of color. The bright touches of purple were perfectly offset with the dusty shale bridesmaid dresses. Teresa looked stunning in her form fitting Vera Wang gown. We enjoyed roaming around the city for portraits and ended the evening dancing the night away inside the stunning Cafe Brauer.

From the Bride… Matt and I met in 2011 and fell in love over a mutual love of summer in Chicago. The early days included days and nights in Wrigelyville, Lincoln Park, and the South Loop neighborhoods.

I was never the girl who grew up dreaming of her wedding day. I didn’t have colors in mind, a dress, a location, or a groom. When I met Matt the “big day” became more of a reality. While we dated we would talk about a “hypothetical party” we would have someday with all of our friends and family. We would share what we wanted that day to look like and who was most important to us.

The dream wedding became a reality when Matt proposed in October 2014. We were on our way to Dubuque, IA (my hometown) for a weekend retreat from the city. We stopped in Galena, IL at a scenic overlook, which is halfway between our hometowns and Matt shocked me when he got down on one knee. And we went on our way to celebrate the weekend with awaiting friends and family in Dubuque.

Our wedding day was so personal. It meant so much to us to have such talented friends and family who helped with the design of the programs, menus, and table numbers and helped our vision come to life. The vendors also listened so closely to our requests and delivered exactly what we wanted. Tiger Lily Catering helped us create the menu with our favorite foods and Candle Ready Cakes helped us create the perfect cake and desserts (we should’ve ordered more because our guests LOVED them).

We were very intentional about every detail throughout the day. Our apartment is referred to by our friends and family as Pollack’s Pub and we wanted our guests to feel right at home. We hoped our guests would enjoy the city and provided transportation to our ceremony at St. Clement’s Catholic Church, and encouraged guests to make their way to Cafe Brauer by stopping at bars/restaurants in the area or checking out the Lincoln Park Zoo- the weather was perfect that day and our guests definitely took advantage.

My favorite part of our day was our first dance. The song was one that was very special to us and our relationship and not many people recognized it. That moment frozen in time was as if we were the only two in the room. The photos don’t even do it justice. It was such a special moment that was so perfectly captured.

Future Brides: Don’t be shy! You will have so many options (and opinions) that come your way- be sure to speak up if you’re unsure or don’t like something. I never would’ve found my wedding dress if I didn’t speak up and tell the stylist I didn’t want the heavy ornate dress. My color scheme was very specific and the florist changed almost everything about the arrangements two weeks before the wedding and they ended up just as perfect as I had hoped. How was I supposed to find anything that matched dusty shale dresses? I browsed so many magazines and websites and social media of other weddings and I slowly pieced mine together- with the help of my groom and many others. There will be so many highs and lows throughout the planning process, but the planning is so worth it to be entirely present for the dream day.

Modern Meets Traditional in This Historic Philadelphia Wedding

If you were to ask me to pinpoint the perfect combination of modernity and traditional, I would direct you to said celebration captured by Rachel Pearlman Photography. It’s basically everything and then some and we just so happen to have it all waiting you to fall madly in love with in The Vault!

From Rachel Pearlman PhotographyA combination of modern meets historic is the best way to describe this stunning summer wedding in historic Philadelphia. Jess and Mark met at the University of Pittsburgh, and once engaged they knew that a wedding in the City of Brotherly Love was not negotiable. Jess is from Philadelphia, so the couple had spent a lot of time in the area and were drawn to the architecture and charm of historic Old City. Once they saw The Downtown Club, founded in 1897 in true Georgian Revival Style, their vision of a neutral color scheme – complete with modern additions- started to come together beautifully. Luxurious details included mixing ghost chairs with golden urns and neutral linens for an unexpected twist. Their cake included cascading sugar flowers dusted in gold. As Mark and Jess were introduced, a canon of rose petals was released on the dance floor. During their ceremony, the couple’s wedding bands were hidden under the chair of a ‘mystery guest’, who was called to act as their ring bearer during vows!

From Anouschka Rokebrand Photography… International weddings, they remain my absolute favorite! Lucy is half Dutch-half Irish, while Haakon is half Norwegian-half American. So you can imagine how international this wedding was!

Friends and family traveled from all over the globe to join them in Amsterdam for their amazing wedding day.

Lucy and Haakon met 10 years ago at University in Scotland and now call The Netherlands their home. Since they had so many people traveling from abroad, Amsterdam was the perfect place to host their wedding and they picked the beautiful Scheepvaartmuseum (maritime museum) as their venue. Since Haakon and his family work in shipping, this fitted them perfectly!

They both got ready at the lovely Hoxton hotel and we traveled to the museum by boat. Lucy wore a stunning soft blush pink Monique Lhuillier gown, paired with rose gold Jimmy Choos. So, so beautiful! The bridesmaids’ dresses were all different but matched perfectly with soft, nude hues and a bit of sparkle.

The ceremony set up was inside the museum in a light-filled room with a classic setup with white chairs. Meesterlijk Groen had created a gorgeous floral arch as a backdrop. The groom’s ring is an heirloom piece from the father of the bride.

After a lovely ceremony with speeches by loved ones, we took a few photos of the newly weds on the docks of the museum before dinner started.

The dining tables were styled beautifully with a gorgeous floral runner adorning the long tables, made of fresh flowers and eucalyptus and gorgeous stationery, designed by The Sparkle Company.

A Breathtaking Wedding Without a Speck of Bright Color in Sight

They say no white after Labor Day but I’m pretty sure an Ojai Valley Inn wedding like this could play any time of year. Brought to us from the lens of Joel Serrato, there’s an airy romance that exudes from Kelly Kaufman’s florals along with the overall design by Park & Grove that’s both effortless and thoughtful in one fell swoop. Head to The Vault for a holiday Monday done so right.

From The Bride…Andrew and I first met while attending college together at USC, but it wasn’t until a few years later that we reconnected at a party in Manhattan Beach, CA and Sarah, my best friend and now business partner, decided to play matchmaker. As a wedding planner, and a general life planner, I assumed that I would know exactly when Andrew would propose, but even he managed to surprise me 4 years later on a Friday morning with the ring!

When it came to choosing a location for our wedding, we wanted it to be somewhere really special for our families and friends. My family is mostly from Chicago and Andrew’s is from Northern California, so we decided to pick a place where everyone could travel and really make a vacation out of the long Memorial Day weekend. We love the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa so much (Sarah and I have worked up there quite a bit) and it was the perfect California setting where everyone could stay together on one property.

Sarah suggested Casa Elar, a private home that is owned by the hotel, which ultimately served as the most beautiful location for the outdoor wedding we envisioned. We wanted both the serenity of an open-air space and the excitement of a late night dance party, so we had our ceremony and dinner reception at the house and then promptly headed back to the hotel ballroom where our guests were greeted by an incredible West Coast Music band, ice cream cake (our favorite!) and all of our go-to late-night comfort foods!

Our home has always had a very neutral palette (Andrew and I share a general aversion to bright color, so our wedding design and coloration consisted of shades of gray, beige, taupe and gold accents. Kelly Kaufman did an incredible job with the flowers, which were composed in aged stone containers and consisted of white and cream peonies and garden roses with deep greens spilling over, accented by lots and lots of candlelight. We kept the place settings simple and classic, featuring a gold-rimmed plate, a natural linen napkin with a menu tied to it using dyed silk ribbon and etched crystal glassware. All of the gorgeous tonal paper fit the setting perfectly and were designed by the extremely creative Brenna Berger of BB Paper and Ink. She is so talented and was the perfect fit for us!

At Park and Grove we always tell our clients that even though couples can get carried away so many details, the most important thing is to remain true to who you are and make sure that your guests feel taken care of along the way. More than anything, it was so important for us to create a relaxing and memorable weekend for everyone who had traveled to Ojai to be with us and as we continued the celebration into a hotel pool party the following day, we knew we had accomplished just that!

Even a Torn ACL Couldn’t Keep This Beautiful Bride Down!

Just weeks before her big day, this beautiful Bride tore her ACL during one of those classic pre-wedding workouts. But determined not to let this hiccup keep her down, she said goodbye to her four inch heels and moved forward. And as seen in these pics by Cody Raisig, that injury was nothing compared to her stunning smiles captured with her new hubby. See it all in our Vault right this way!

From the Bride… Jeff and I got engaged on April 18, 2015, and we started planning our wedding immediately to accommodate an early-spring wedding for the following year. St. Francis Xavier and Tribeca Rooftop were the first big decisions we made, fortuitously inspiring the wedding’s other decisions. Tribeca Rooftop’s expansive views brought out our desire for classic elegance, and St. Francis Xavier’s cathedral-like grandeur influenced our decisions around music, stationery, colors, flowers, and my dress. We didn’t necessarily have a desired theme, but a desired feeling – timeless, regal, elegant; and at the same time, fun, light, and pretty.

There weren’t too many wedding-planning hiccups; however, six weeks prior to the big day, I managed to tear my ACL and meniscus during my wedding-workout regimen. This caused a bit of bridal angst – I had to forget about my super-fit-bride dreams and four inch heels. But it was such an incredible blessing and relief when our wedding day turned out to be one of the prettiest days of the month. From the weather to the ceremony, and to our guests who came from near and far, Jeff and I couldn’t have dreamt a better day. While we can’t relive our wedding day, the pictures and videos that Cody Raisig Photography and videography team Visual Poets help us remember the details and feel. We are so grateful to them, as well as our other vendors, for helping us piece together our dream day.

How to Communicate with Your Hairstylist

When it came time to tell my hairstylist how I wanted my hair on my big day, well, I was tongue tied. I had photos I liked and an idea of what I didn’t want… but struggled to find real words to describe these looks. Our talented friends at Janelle on Location are here to save the day for all you other beauty bumbling brides out there. With pics and proper vocabulary, they’re sharing essential info to ensure you look and feel your best on that walk down the aisle.

From Janelle on LocationHair can be extremely difficult to describe – even for professionals! There aren’t many hairstyles that have been named, and even for the names we do have – chignon, French twist, braid, etc, there are literally millions of options and variations for bridal parties to choose from. Coming from a stylist, it is extremely helpful when ladies describe their everyday styles, what they’re most comfortable with on a day-to-day basis.

“I usually wear my hair up in a high top knot for work” can help us know that you like your hair up, so you’re probably not interested in a lot of volume framing your face, and it might be helpful if your updo was visible from the front, on the top of your head, because that’s what you’re used to seeing. Or, “I wear my hair down every day no matter what but I wanted to do an updo for my wedding to show off the back of the dress.” This tells us that you need a lot of softness in the front. Perhaps a few pieces hanging down, with a more “accidental” look to how it’s pulled back. Perhaps like this style –

I’m excited to share descriptions of hairstyles and the words we suggest using as you work to articulate your wedding day look with your stylist. Photos can be great in general, but at Janelle on Location, we really like to ensure our ladies achieve their own, individual look – even if it’s inspired from a photo.

This low, structured style (above) is clean, classic, traditional and absolutely timeless. With big movements of the curls specifically placed, all the ends are tucked in and the bride looks so polished!

All of these (above) styles are updos with structured curls.

This romantic unstructured look (below) has some pieces that were given total freedom. Intentionally left “out” select ends of curls were not pinned to give movement and an effortless look. Like, “Oops, I’m beautiful.” Think #iwokeuplikethis

Another example of an unstructured curl placement is when you can’t see where one curl ends and another starts. Take these two styles for example – on the left, definitive movements are obvious – especially if contrasted against the style on the right which is perfectly “haphazard.” The left would be considered “structured” and the right “unstructured.”

In regards to a half down or all down style, a basic rule of thumb: the softer the “s” shape, the more of a wave you want. The more definitive, you’re hitting “curl” territory. If there’s more definition, you’re likely a curl kind of girl. Whereas, if the hair is all moving the same direction, you’re looking for wave. This is a great example of a soft wave (left) contrasted next to a bit of a tighter curl (right). See how the right style has so much more definition of curl close to the root?

Don’t forget: you are NOT interested in a loose hairstyle. You want it to look soft. And you want that soft look to stay in throughout the entire reception as you dance the night away!

If you’re not sure what vocabulary would be most helpful as you communicate with your stylist – show her your SMP Vault photos and ask, “How would you describe this look?” Pay attention to the words she uses for various styles and combine the ones you think best represent you for your own, perfect look. You want something that accurately represents your personality and makes you feel like yourself at your very best.

Wedding Dress Trends to Expect at Bridal Week Fall 2017

I don’t have a favorite day of the year. Instead, I have a favorite week. Two to be exact. Bridal Fashion Week, when my days are filled with clouds of lace, flowers made from the finest fabrics, and sartorial masterpieces. It’s a week I look forward to every six months, eagerly anticipating what I’m going to see walk down the runway. And for Fall 2017, bridal stylist and expert Annie Cavallo, of I Do Style, is predicting we’ll be seeing these six gorgeous trends.

The New Romantics

Designers are re-thinking the classic bridal silhouettes and we will continue to see this investment into the new millennial bride mindset. Ready-to-wear influences of pants, jackets, dress shirts will be back for the Fall and than some. I predict we will see some reinvented favorites like a ball skirt layered over a short-set or romper — be ready to mix and match with wedding day separates. Accessory to watch for, BELTS!

[dotted]

Botanica

The concept of florals on your gown rather in your bouquet is not slowing down but rather over growing. We are seeing the floral explosion across all fashion platforms and especially in bridal with 3-D appliqués, garden vine details, embroidery and even veil treatments. The favorite bloom for the seasons seems to be the Rose, perhaps evolving from it’s spot light in the Spanish Influence trend we saw this past spring. Look out for rose appliqués, embroidered motifs and even shades of pink as rose seems to be the new it flower and color.

[dotted]

Elizabethan

High collars, ruffles and the emphasis on shoulders —this season prepare to see the royal treatment on your traditional ball gowns. This trend is all opulence with impressing details: rich brocade fabrics, dedicated pleated collars and cuffs, yoke panels and a grand statement train. Puffed shoulders and fitted sleeves would be a huge part of this trend, capes and crowns to finish the look and a possible gothic twist — think more black in bridal.

[dotted]

Old West Influence

Evolving from the victorian trend of high necklines, lace patterns and tiered ruffle skirts, we should be seeing more of this trend for Fall. Watching some of the RTW designers add a fresh spin to this style adding in lace up corset treatments, bustled trains and even short mini dresses that give a “parlor girl” vibe, these could all be seen again with bridal spin. Key notes for this trend, ruffles and ruching, paneled gathered ball skirts and feathers and fringe.

[dotted]

Next-to-Nothing

Even though there isn’t much left to take away, the “nude illusions” trend will still be turning up the heat on this Fall’s runway. There could be some interesting under-pinning treatments, boning structures and seaming details that play into the new style trends. I think lace up corsets will definitely be feature with these gowns paired with gauzy sheer layers.

[dotted]

Baby Doll

Flouncy layers, cascading ruffles, feminine details that are soft and playful. We could see some empire waistlines and that true baby-doll shape dresses coming from the influence of 90’s fashion. Collars and chocker accessories would be part of this look, strong off the shoulder arm details and ruffle sleeves. Other 90’s references that could come into play, crochet, open weave laces and mesh.

How To Find the Perfect Pink Lipstick for You

Admittedly, lipstick intimidates me. Maybe if the actual lipstick colors were what translated onto my lip, I’d be in business, but that never seems to work out. Been in the same beauty boat? Well, look no further puckered pretties, Waiting on Martha is giving us tips today on finding the perfect shade, of pink that is—a hue every girl should have in her lipstick case.

From Waiting on Martha If you’re a regular here on WOM, you’ll know that I can’t leave my house without my signature pink lip. I’ve been wearing YSL ‘Rouge Pur Couture’ in Tropical Pink (49) for years after discovering its perfect bubbly pink hue. A signature lip color is something I strongly believe every woman should know about herself.

Discovering that signature shade all starts with knowing your skin color/tone. Do you have warm, cool or neutral tones? Having my “colors” analyzed a few years ago was game changing for me and something I think about constantly whenever picking our clothes and makeup. By assessing your skin’s color and tone, you’ll be on your way to finding a lip color that will always be your finishing touch to a polished look, as well as a major confidence boost.

The best way to find the perfect pink lipstick is to test out a lot of them. Finding your signature color takes time; think of it like dating. Consider setting up an appointment with a beauty professional at a makeup counter, or do it on your own with less expensive options from the drugstore. This way, you’ll try a handful of textures and tones to find the perfect one.

If you have a warm skin tone, you’ll want to find a pink lipstick that has more rosy, coral and orange warm undertones. On the other hand, if you have a cool skin tone (like me), stick to pink lipsticks that have more blues and purples in them. If you’re still not sure about your skin tone, here are a few easy hacks to figure it out.

The next thing to consider is the texture and finish you’re hoping to achieve: do you want a high-gloss or matte look? I personally prefer high-gloss because matte makes my lips feel too dry. Don’t get me wrong, matte is beautiful, but it’s just not for me. Since I like a glossy finish, I’ve started to use NARS lip gloss (that has just a hint of pink) on top of my YSL Tropical Pink. Once you do find your signature pink lipstick, stock up! They always seem to discontinue my favorites, and I’ve learned my lesson the hard way. Tell me friends, have you found your perfect pink lipstick?! Truly, MKR

10 Things You Do Not Need to Register For

Registering for your wedding can be totally and completely overwhelming, especially when what you want and what you need are two very different things. Yes, that fondue pot can melt chocolate or cheese into a bite of heaven, but chances are, it’ll be collecting more dust than deliciousness. So, before you go on your wedding registry shopping spree, take a peek at the 10 things you shouldn’t register for. Trust us, it’s probably not worth it.

    [dotted]

  1. Electronics:

With a new model out every other day, it’s just plain silly to register for something that will be considered “old” and “dated” before you even say “I do.” These are the types of items it’s better to take your time, research and invest in later on as a couple.

  2. Fine China + Crystal:

If you host and entertain elegant affairs frequently, then by all means, register for these sparkly pieces. But if you don’t – and don’t see yourself doing so anytime in the future – then skip. There are much smarter selections that you’ll actually use to choose from.

  3. Furniture:

Do you know exactly where you’ll be living for the foreseeable future? If not, don’t invest in large, expensive pieces that may not fit the size or style of your future home.

  4. Clothing:

Not the time, not the place.

  5. Personal Knick Knacks + Toys:

Similar to clothing, these items are for your Christmas list, not your registry.

  6. Precious + Fragile Bakeware:

Even any amateur baker will tell you, your pastry pieces need to durable. You don’t need to worry about breaking your bread pan anytime you whip up some whole wheat treats.

  7. Anything with an Expiration Date:

If you’ll need to replace the item in six months, it’s not worth a spot on your registry wish list. Buy it yourself and add something longer term to the list.

  8. Seasonal Specific:

Sure you love ice cone machine but will you use it after August 31st? Most likely not. The Halloween place mats? If their time to shine is only a matter of weeks, treat yourself to them on your own and save your guests from searching for them for your shower.

  9. Misc “Fun Items”:

Do you really need that fondue pot? The s’mores maker? Unless you will legitimately use it more than 10 times in the next year, it’s a pass in our book. They’re fun and all until you find it in a back drawer two years later, collecting dust. Not needed.

  10. Intimate Items:

If you don’t want Grandma to see it, don’t register for it. End of story.

They Married at a Converted Cotton Mill

The heart behind this wedding? A small, family-focused celebration held at a historic Cotton Mill turned venue space. “Industrial chic” is always a win in our book and Alyssa Maloof’s images are the proof. More in The Vault!

From The Bride…We were just about to sign the lease on a venue out of town when my aunt called to say she thought she had found somewhere perfect. She was a short five minute walk away in a building that was part of the original Cotton Mill our apartment building had been transformed from. The Elm, a carriage house nestled away on a side street hidden by a garden of trees and gorgeous flowers, was it. It had the history of our own home wrapped into it and gave us our quintessential Baltimore wedding.

My husband and I are both rooted in our families and wanted to keep our wedding small and centered around them and the things we love, good food, good music and good people. My aunt and my mom (along with the help of some very gracious friends) not only transformed the Elm into the most magical place for our wedding, but also catered all of the food. From the crab cakes made from my grandmother’s recipe, to the cakes my mom baked for dessert, our bellies and hearts were full.

We were married in the garden of the Elm after which our family and friends ventured up to the carriage house’s beautiful alley for cocktail hour where they sipped on John Daly’s and were entertained by a family friend shucking raw oysters and two of our favorite bartenders from a local Hampden restaurant. After dinner, we danced the night away to Jr. Cline and the Recliners, a local band no stranger to entertaining a crowd, even if it included learning few requested tunes on the spot.

Everything from the location of our wedding to the planning, decorating and cooking done by family and friends made our wedding intimate and personal in every way and created a night filled with so much love.

From the Bride… Jeff and I met in law school at the University of San Diego. Go Toreros! Our roommates were dating (each other) and thought we would be a good match. We ignored them for a while but they finally won out. We started dating shortly after law school and never looked back. A couple of years later, we ended up walking down the aisle together as a bridesmaid/groomsman at their wedding.

The proposal was amazing! We had a romantic dinner planned on Christmas Eve before the typical holiday madness. We decided to exchange one present before heading to dinner. Jeff’s present was a box within a box within a box within a box, etc. The final small box was empty. When I looked up at Jeff in confusion, he was down on one knee with the ring in hand. Jeff said a few things (which nobody quite seems to remember) and I said yes, presumably.

Because it was a destination wedding, we went into the wedding blind. We hadn’t seen the venue in person and we hadn’t tasted the food or met the photographer or videographer. We left everything up to the recommendation of our amazing planner, Jane Park-Gonzales from Belle Destination Events. We wanted to make sure that our wedding was fun and carefree. We never wanted it to be too stuffy or tedious, just intimate and relaxing for everyone, especially us. We both love to travel and wanted to give all of our family and friends an excuse to take a vacation.

The wedding day was absolutely perfect, although it was a whirlwind of a day. Everything was a dream. The ambiance was relaxed and fun, highlighted by lots of wood and blush colors. We wanted to let the beauty of the venue and ocean background carry the day, which it certainly did. Everything went off without a hitch and the sunset was incredible, the best of the entire trip. Against all odds, even the groomsmen were relatively well-behaved. In the end, the highlight of our day was being able to let loose and enjoy the beautiful venue and atmosphere with our friends and family.

My advice to any future brides would be to plan the day that YOU want, not what other people want. Everyone you ask (and some that you don’t) will have a different opinion about how to plan your wedding day. Also, enjoy the day, it goes by quickly.

We Dare You Not to Fall Madly in Love with these Waffle Sugar Cookies

Did you happen to catch the cutest birthday party ever in existence? It was all about Pancakes + Pajamas with a menu that we can seriously get behind. One such item on that sweets smorgasbord was these crazy yummy looking Waffle Sugar Cookies. Meet your new favorite treat…

Waffle Sugar Cookies

[dotted]

inspired by this recipe!

Ingredients

2½ cups All-purpose Flour
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
1/4 tsp Baking Soda
½ teaspoon Salt
¾ cup Unsalted Butter
1 cup Granulated Sugar
2 Eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Directions

Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter on a low/medium speed until light and fluffy – about 2 minutes. Add in the sugar continue to beat for another 2-3 minutes. Change the mixer to your lowest setting and add in one egg at a time, completely incorporating before adding the 2nd egg. Add your vanilla.

With the setting on low, add 1 cup of the dry ingredients at a time until just combined. To maximize the sugar cookies ability to stay together in the waffle iron, you want to refrigerate for a couple of hours.

Preheat your waffle iron (ours was non-stick which worked great and we didn’t need any additional spray). Add 1 overflowing tbs at a time (we used a mellon baller and included about 1Tbs per cookie). Close the lid and cook for about 2-3 minutes.

Use a small butter knife or a spoon to gently lift the cookie off the iron. If they look like they are going to crumble, close the lid for 10-20 more seconds. Cool on a wire rack completely.

White Chocolate Coating

[dotted]

Ingredients

1.5 cups white chocolate wafers, melted
bowl with high-ish edges for dunking
sprinkles
parchment paper

Directions

Melt your wafters in a bowl that is small enough to create a nice little dunking pool but large enough to fit your largest cookie with a little wiggle room. You may need to add more/less melting wafters to create this effect.

Dip your cooled wafter into your chocolate. You may need to use a spoon to get the chocolate in all of the nooks and crannies. Set on your parchment paper and sprinkle with sprinkles!

Let set completely then try not to eat all in one sitting.

TIPS

*If you are going to freeze, make sure they are completely cool prior to putting in a plastic baggie and freezing as you don’t want the heat to create moisture. We froze before adding the chocolate and they tasted great the day of. Gently thaw in the fridge for a few hours.

*We tried these using store bought sugar cookie mix and it didn’t go well. Our guess is that the butter/fat content is too high. A good, sturdy homemade version definitely works best!
