How NOT to Break the Bank on Framing

I remember the very first time I had something professionally framed. My wallet gave me the eye roll—and it wasn’t even a large piece! It was a simple 8×10″ with matting. Since then my financial relationship with framing has been on the rocks, but I’ve come to learn that it doesn’t need to be. With a few resources at hand, you can put your fear of framing at rest too (and save loads of moolah in the process).

All the Inspiration You’ll Ever Need for Your Vow Renewal

You know what’s better than saying “I do?” Saying it again. And if you’re looking for inspiration for your very own vow renewal, Simply Sarah Photography is delivering it in epic proportions with this stunning Alys Beach shoot featuring some of the sweetest details ever. It’s a talented team of vendors (hello, Molly Mckinley, Lindsay Coletta and Fig and Flourish) all coming together to show you just how awesome tying the knot is… twice. See it all in THE VAULT right here.

From Molly Mckinley This vow renewal was inspired by the crisp lines and classic colors of Alys Beach and the way it contrasted with the darling couple’s soft style – the bride’s chiffon dress and large lush bouquet and groom’s pale blue jacket. Blush, green, and ivory florals accentuated the already lovely architecture, while softening the overall feel.

These images tell the story of a young couple who after one year of marriage, decided to escape to Alys Beach, Florida to celebrate their love with a small vow renewal. While walking through the beautiful courtyards of Alys, they reminisced on the last year together. They stumbled upon vintage postcards in a local boutique and addressed them to their loved ones back home. At the end of the day, they shared a picnic and a few glasses of Rosé, then disappeared up the stairs of their cottage for the week.  See more from Simply Sarah Photography here

Five (!!) Wardrobe Changes for this Cultural Wedding

From start to finish, this Bride and Groom kept us guessing, wondering what gold detailed ensemble was coming next. And with five – yes, five! – gorgeous getups, it’s impossible to pick a favorite. Luna de Mare Photography captured every one and all the other rich Cambodian cultural details of this beautiful bash. More in our Vault this way!

From Luna de Mare PhotographyRich in cultural details, this Cambodian wedding set inside the Japanese Garden in Long Beach, was full of rich tones and intricate ceremonial traditions. The bride and groom had a total of five wardrobe changes throughout the day, each adorned with beautiful golden details. Age long traditions were recognized and rituals were performed to perfection, as they relished each with smiles on their faces throughout the festivities of the day. As the morning ceremonies concluded, Sothea and Richard changed into traditional American wedding attire and wed under the same Mandap draped with florals, and held their reception nearby where Cambodian courses were served throughout their night.

The Dreamiest Plaza Hotel Wedding

When it comes to wedding day grandeur, nothing can quite compare (or hold a candle) to The Plaza Hotel in NYC. Want proof? Just take on peek at this pretty from Marcy Blum Associates. It’s an evening filled with ballroom elegance and Christian Oth behind the lens and we’ve got it all in The Vault!

From the Bride…When I was in my first year out of college, I went to my younger sister’s winter formal with her as her date. She was a Junior at the University of Madison-Wisconsin. While at her formal, we were hanging out with her friend Alex when he asked me if he could give his older brother my number. I was single and looking to date, so I happily obliged. Daniel texted me and asked me for a date the following week. He took me to Pravda on our first date, and my initial impression was that he was extremely sweet, mature, a little shy, and very cute! The conversation was easy, and I felt very comfortable with him instantly. Our first date was the week before Christmas, and I think that we were pretty much living together by March.

About 2-2.5 years into dating, Dan and I went on vacation to Anguilla, which is my favorite island that I have been going to since I was little. I knew he had a ring at this point because I had designed it, but I didn’t know when he was going to propose. It was the second night of our vacation, and we had a dinner reservation at the hotel. When we arrived for dinner, the hostess told us that we had a private table set up by the pool, which overlooked the ocean. The ring was set on the table. When we walked up, Dan took the ring and got onto one knee. It was the most beautiful and meaningful moment that I could have asked for.

Soon after we got home from the trip, we started the wedding planning process. We got Marcy Blum’s name through my mom’s friend, and from our very first meeting with her, we knew she was the perfect fit! Marcy and Gabby (her assistant) made the entire process so seamless and fun. Planning a wedding should be a happy and exciting time, yet sometimes it gets clouded by stress. With Marcy, I did not feel overwhelmed at all. People kept telling me that I was the calmest bride that they had ever met (on my wedding day, someone even asked me if I was sedated!!), and I owe that all to Marcy and Gabby.

Our wedding was at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. It was on June 18th, a beautiful warm sunny day. The entire day was like a dream. I woke up and did Pilates with my sister, and when we came back to the hotel, the bridal suite was decked out with hair and makeup stations, food, champagne, most importantly, my bridal party and mom! Hair and makeup felt like a party-we had champagne flowing, music playing, and matching pajamas (duh!). I think my favorite part of the day was the reveal, though. After getting ready, they had me walk down this beautiful grand staircase where Dan was waiting for me. It became very real to me at that moment that I was about to marry my best friend. Pictures followed, and our photographer Christian made the whole process so playful and fun. Even Dan said he had fun during pictures, which says a lot! We took photos in the hotel, and we also got to go to Central Park since it was such a beautiful day. The shots that he captured were truly amazing.

The ceremony room was the most whimsical, magical room I had ever seen. The design team (David Beahm) made it feel like an enchanted garden. Everything just felt very special and you could tell that so much thought and attention went into the décor. David transformed the Plaza into a beautiful garden, with rustic wooden tables, floral linens, and flowers like peonies, garden roses, and hydrangea. It felt so unexpected for the Plaza, which I loved. The food was great-everyone raved about the raw bar and the lobster rolls at the cocktail hour. My favorite touch was that there were freshly made doughnuts for guests as they were leaving at the end of the night-SO good!! Honestly, the whole day/night was such a blur-it went by way too fast and I wish I could do it all over again. It was the most special day of my life, and I feel so lucky to have had everyone I love in one room for a night. It was so whimsical and beautiful…a truly perfect way to start our marriage.

Married at the Same University Where They Met

How incredibly sweet is Rachel and Rob’s love story!? Because these two Yale alumni decided to say ‘I Do’ at the university where they first met and the results? Total stare-worthy. Complete with a peach ombre gown and even an acapella performance from the groom, Julie Paisley Photography has snapped it all to share in The Vault!

From Julie Paisley PhotographyRachel and Rob met while they were students at Yale University. Since the campus was so special to them, of course they had to have their ceremony at the chapel. Rachel’s dress was stunning. It was a peach ombre and really stood out against the black of the bridesmaids dresses. So different and so beautiful. Rob surprised Rachel with one of the Acapella groups from Yale and he even joined in and serenaded his beautiful bride. They danced the night away under the stars with family and friends and it was just the perfect day.

A Bohemian Backyard Wedding That Defines “Cool”

Can we please have an in-depth conversation about this backyard wedding? Because quite frankly, it’s a dreamy, dream, dream come true. Captured by Kati Rosado it’s the most incredible day that’ll redefine the average at-home affair and we’ve got every beautiful bit waiting in The Vault!

From Kati RosadoDeeDee and Seth are two of the most humble and kind people I have ever met. I knew from the start that their wedding would be simply amazing and it exceeded every one of my expectations. DeeDee actually inquired with me before she found her venue, so I made it my goal to help her find the perfect venue. I recommended Quincy Garden Center, one of the most lovely hidden gems just outside of Tallahassee, Florida. I loved that the whole wedding day took place entirely on this historic property. The reception was located under large oak trees in the front lawn of the house. It was of of the most romantic weddings I have ever had the privilege of photographing.

From the Bride… Seth and I met at church believe it or not. I guess you could say we are pretty old school. He opens the car door for me and makes sure I walk on the inside of him on a sidewalk or in a parking lot (chivalry is NOT dead!). Our wedding was a reflection of how it has felt from our dating to marriage seasons of life- like it is too good to be true! Don’t get me wrong, our relationship is not perfect and there are plenty of not pictured moments like my big brother catching a napkin on fire at the dinner table. I couldn’t even come up with that myself to make it up but it truly was hilarious. Our favorite moment by far was our “first touch”. In that moment we got to pray together just before our intimate backyard style wedding, surrounded by our family and friends; the family we choose.

Funky Vegas Wedding (With Rock Candy in Champagne!)

If you’re the kind of couple who marches to the beat of your own drum, or the kind who prefer popcorn and tacos to upscale hors d’oeuvres…this wedding is SO for you. This bride and groom swooped up their friends and family for a Las Vegas destination wedding that’s as cool as they come. Peek at the photos from Gaby J and see why we think rock candy in champagne should be the next big thing.

From The Bride…Inspiration behind your wedding:

Jason and I knew how we wanted our day to feel. We wanted it to be relaxed, elegant, intimate, and a little whimsical. We wanted a small wedding with about 50 guests so didn’t want anything too traditional and really wanted fun and delicious food. Our aim was more of a pub atmosphere with comfortable lounge furniture so people could move around easily between courses and interact. We had tacos, rock candy in champagne, and a popcorn bar, we planned only a few speeches interspersed in between courses of food, and chose which specific wedding traditions we wanted to do (cake cutting!) and which ones we didn’t want any part of (first dance & bouquet/garter toss).

Why did you choose Las Vegas?

Jason and I took a vacation to Las Vegas and while we were there, we visited Red Rock Canyon and really fell in love with the desert landscape. We have family and friends across Canada, U.S.A., and the U.K. so some guests were going to travel no matter what location we chose. We always liked the idea of a destination wedding as it would allow us to really spend a lot of time with our guests. Las Vegas is a central, easily accessible location for a destination wedding. We knew more people could commit to a fun weekend away rather than having to take a week of vacation for a tropical resort. And Las Vegas is a lot of fun with something for everyone!

Why the theme?

The three design elements we really wanted to incorporate was geodes, succulents, and geometrical shapes. I met Jason while he was completing his Masters in Geology so the geodes were a nod to his interests as well as being simply beautiful. I love succulents and really wanted that desert element in our wedding to showcase our location. We both really like hexagons and wanted to incorporate geometrical shapes in some way. We loved Tara’s idea for our ceremony backdrop! It was a perfect way to incorporate all three of these elements as well our colors.

Favorite detail or moment of the wedding day?

Our day was spectacular from start to finish so it’s hard to choose! I loved walking into the ballroom with Jason and Tara and seeing everything for the first time. I was so blown away to see what we had planned come together so beautifully. It was everything I had dreamed of and I loved all the little details.

My main highlight is the ceremony. The ceremony was perfectly customized to us and Angie did such an amazing job capturing our love. I loved how nervous Jason suddenly was. We had spent the afternoon together laughing and taking photos but as I walked towards him down the aisle he barely cracked a smile. My dad forgot to hug me and just went and sat down and my mom quickly followed him so it was a brief awkward moment but even that didn’t elicit a smile. I kept squeezing his hands to try to calm him down and he did eventually relax. I knew I would cry during our personal vows so I asked him to carry a handkerchief for me. He forgot it in the hotel room, of course, so I just wildly scrambled behind me at my girls for a tissue. I don’t even think I spoke to them, I just wanted to get right back into that moment with him.

Jason shows me in a million different ways that he loves me every day but this was the first time I think he fully articulated out loud everything I meant to him and his hopes for our future. I still get teary-eyed when I think about his beautiful vows. On top of an amazing service, we had a beautiful desert landscape behind us, the most beautiful ceremony backdrop, great weather, a very serious flower girl, wonderful friends and family to witness, and a fun noisemaker filled recession.

This Modern Bride Wore the Dreamiest Open Back Gown

This beautiful bride is about to become a style icon because her gown is DIVINE! And the dress? Well that’s just the start. A day captured by Connie Whitlock and effortlessly designed by A Vintage Affair Events & Rentals, we’ve got every darling and dreaming detail waiting in The Vault

Modern

From A Vintage Affair Events & RentalsErin was such a joy to work with throughout the planning of her wedding. She is kind, intelligent, cares about the small details and how everything will come together aesthetically – while still remembering what the big picture is about: her love and marriage to Matthew and the joy of the celebration. From the very beginning, we (the ladies at A Vintage Affair) joked that Erin was too cool for us, from the fact she designs her own jewelry – look at that hand bracelet! – to her unique and eclectic style. Her wedding was one that embraced a mixture of romance with a touch of modernity, while being more on the minimalist and organic side. When you combine her style with the amazing work of Connie Whitlock and Ali Fortunato, you get nothing short of amazing.

Erin first bought a beautiful, more traditional lace gown. While it was a gorgeous dress, something just didn’t feel right to her. When she emailed me a picture of the new dress she was considering, my jaw dropped! We both knew it was the one! It was a stunning Houghton NYC gown that was both modern and chic; yet timeless at the same time. The dress helped to set the tone of the day to come.
The wedding was set at the beautiful Crooked Willow Farms in Larkspur, Colorado with wide open spaces and spanning views of the foothills. For the outdoor ceremony arbor, Erin wanted it to look organic with a wild branchy feel to it, but still made sure that her favorite flower, the clematis, was incorporated for visual interest.

For the reception tables, Erin chose to go with something more modern but still clean and elegant. We wanted the reception flowers to stand out, so we decided on a grey linen for all the round tables and included a pop of color in the middle of the room with a blue linen to bring in the blue from the color palette.

To go along with the bride’s love of variety, we chose vintage glassware from Yonder House; clear for the rounds and pink for the blue table. The gold flatware added to the modern feel of the wedding and to highlight the sweetheart table, we chose two beautiful white vintage embellished chargers. While the table decor provided a mix of a vintage and a modern ambiance, they came together to create a harmonious vision in a beautiful space.

Rustic Romance Done Oh-So-Right

One look at this beautiful gallery and we knew that we were in for one of those rustic + romantic affairs that truly, truly makes our hearts happy.  From the loosely crafted florals from Elegance in Bloom to the breathtaking locale to the seriously stunning captures from Laura Ann Miller, this is a day that is rich in gorgeous details with a side of barn dancin’ fun. Head to THE VAULT now to swoon your hearts out.

From the Bride… What did you envision your wedding being prior to planning?

We were much more focused on the “feel,” than the “look.” We wanted a day that would highlight both of our personalities, and create a fun and laid back environment for our loved ones.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

We actually refused to pick wedding colors. We are not big fans of matchy-matchy and wanted a natural palette to serve as a backdrop to let the flora and fauna do the heavy lifting. Our style vision was woodlands- a country winery was able to capture the natural, the rustic and vintage elements we wanted to blend together.

What unique elements or DIY details did you include?

Railroad Lanterns and Models: Josh’s late stepfather, Vance, was a railroad aficionado. In fact, he meticulously restored a 1952 Wabash caboose that has since been donated to the Missouri Transportation Museum. Displaying some of Vance’s railroad memorabilia was a great way to incorporate his spirit into our day.

“Brass” Woodland Creatures: We took a budget-friendly spin on brass animals, and applied a bit of spray paint to plastic woodland creatures that were placed on the moss table runners between the flowers, vases, river stones and candles. Seating Stones and Photos: In lieu of place cards, we wrote guests’ names on river rocks to indicate their table assignments. The stones were placed on beds of moss and surrounded by photos of previous family weddings and late family members that were important to include in our special day.

What was your favorite moment?

We joined together in the barn loft space for an intimate first look/veil ceremony and executed the ketubah and marriage license in front of our immediate family and wedding party. This flowed directly into our outdoor ceremony at the chuppah. It was a beautiful and meaningful moment- one that first comes to mind when we look back upon that blur of a day. A close second would be the horah – it was amazing (and somewhat terrifying) to be lifted in the arms of our friends while watching our love ones dance around us. We also had amazing speeches- from fathers, uncles, sisters and friends- the photos of us belly laughing during these moments will be forever favorites.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc?

Flowers: Elegance in Bloom was amazing- we wanted a loose and wild look- nothing too over designed. The bouquets and chuppah arrangements were natural and flowing and the tables featured mostly single stems in an array of vases, combined with moss, pillar candles and animal figurines.

Gown: The gown was nothing like I had imagined. In fact, it had many elements on my “definitely no” list. However, when I put it on, nothing compared. The silhouette was perfection and the large pattern lace gave a unique, vintage feel that I haven’t seen before.

Cake: We chose a small cake for ceremonial / traditional purposes, as we really wanted to focus on PIES. However, the same bakery made the cake that was simple and perfect, and we adored our fox couple cake topper surrounded by flowers from Elegance in Bloom.

What is one piece of advice that you could give brides-to-be?

We both have very busy professional lives with little free time. We decided to tackle the big things early- venue and key vendors. Once those items were secured, the details were fun and less stressful to address as they came due. It also doesn’t hurt to choose a beautiful venue with great coordinating staff- we knew that if all else fails, the setting would be naturally beautiful, and our coordinators would shield us from all of the crazy things that could happen, had no one thought them through.

Playful Puerto Rico Engagement Shoot

I’ll forever be a romantic, but my personal favorite reaction captured in photos? Laughter. It’s the most authentic emotion there is and when you can feel that joy radiating from photos, it just doesn’t get much better than that. Case in point: this engagement shoot by Greg Finck; don’t you want to be best friends with this couple? See all the laughs in our Vault right here!

From Greg FinckYasmine and John have been one of my biggest client crushes! They both live in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and booked me for their wedding, which will happen next October in Charleston, South Carolina. John probably is one of the funniest person I’ve met, and I just could not contain myself behind the camera.

I was traveling to Puerto Rico for a wedding, and that’s how Yasmine and John decided to have their engagement session on the island. I loved every minute spent with this adorable couple. As I’m particularly fond of jokes myself, this was nonstop between John and I, and Yasmine just could not stop laughing during the session. I believe the images speak for themselves, and I just love how the humor and good mood is communicative on them. The day after the session, Yasmine and John just invited me for a day at the beach, where we spent the day chatting about the wedding and paddling… I am just so grateful to have crossed their paths, and literally can’t wait for their wedding in Charleston!

A Unique Multicultural Wedding in Washington D.C.

Multicultural weddings? They’re kind of our jam. The blending of two families, two backgrounds, two sets of traditions is beautiful in so many ways and lucky for us, Haithem and Azza felt the same. They planned a day with thoughtful nods to both their backgrounds and brought on Annamarie Akins to make sure not even a second was missed. More right here!

From Annamarie AkinsWhen I first met Haithem and Azza, I knew right away that I was going to love being a part of this sweet season in their lives. It was such a gorgeous day filled with love and the blending of their two cultures and families.

The day began at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria followed by the ceremony and reception at Fairfax Hall. We ended the evening at sunset with a perfect lighting atop the Kennedy Center! The place was fitting because it was where Azza and Haithem first held hands and told each other that they liked one another.

It was so special to be up there at the end of their wedding with them, and such an honor to capture their day!

Infusing Your Home with a Modern + Bright Aesthetic

Bright and modern is the name of this home’s game. Sometimes serene, sometimes bold, but all with a crisp, contemporary aesthetic woven throughout by Natalie Drake. From the prettiest light filled bedroom to a stately dining room bar stocked to the gills, take the full tour captured by Anna Reynal with even more in the VAULT.

My clients moved into a newly renovated house in the NoMa neighborhood of D.C. when I met them last summer. They wanted to start from scratch and buy all new furniture for the main living spaces.

We worked towards a modern + bright aesthetic, while incorporating lots of color and hints of their personality and culture throughout.

The master bedroom is fairly small and they don’t have a ton of closet space. So I added lots of storage solutions including a large wardrobe, sleek wall-mounted cabinets, and a little floating bronze shelf to store jewelry.

The living room is filled with geometric/bold patterns, with neutral greys, and pops of bright blues sprinkled everywhere.

The living room rug is one of my favorite elements in the home. This Lulu & Georgia rug is quite a statement piece. Not many people would be willing to go this bold, so I was so excited when my clients approved the saturated blue geometric rug.

I designed a breakfast area in the back portion of the kitchen. A custom built-in bench to match the kitchen cabinetry fits perfectly and provides an informal seating area that receives tons of natural light.

They love collecting maps, so we brainstormed ideas how to use some of the existing maps they owned – but then ultimately, we used historic map images from the Library of Congress’ online site. Free art essentially!

I selected the maps with highest resolution of historic Washington, D. C. A few of the maps are actually their neighborhood. I color-adjusted the images and print + framed them using Framebridge. I selected an industrial grey frame style with grommet details to add a bit of masculinity and contrast to the office.

The Bride Designed Her Own Floral Print Wedding Dress

The second this wedding from Keepsake Memories Photography came through our inbox, we knew we’d found something special. For starters, the bride Laura happens to be the manager of a bridal salon and knew she wanted something truly unique for her own big day. She took the floral print of an Anna Maier gown and custom-designed a dress fit for a bridal fashionista. But the dress is only the beginning, and there’s much more to see right this way.

From Keepsake Memories PhotographyOne would think it would be incredibly simple and easy for the manager of a bridal salon to find her perfect gown. But for Laura, who’s used to seeing countless designs every day, it meant wanting something truly out-of-the-box. So, she created it.

One look at the floral pattern from the skirt of an Anna Maier gown was all it took. Laura customized it by using the purple fabric for the entire gown – from neckline to hemline. It was a design choice that, along with her modern black heels and statement jewelry, made an impression. Even though Laura’s style is very modern, she, along with her groom Greg, knew that there were traditional elements they wanted to incorporate for their big day. The two chose to get married at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Norwalk, Conn. – the same church Laura’s parents were married in, in the town she grew up in. She also wore her mother’s cathedral-length veil.

Their color palette for the day was black, purple, white, and gold. Bridesmaids wore long purple dresses and carried bouquets bursting with white flowers. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos, black bow ties, and white boutonnieres.

Armed with a white bouquet, Laura was escorted down the aisle and greeted Greg at the altar, waiting her arrival in a handsome black tux. He exchanged loving smiles with his bride and they made their promises to one another in front of friends and family.

Laura and Greg posed for photos afterwards and soaked in the scene by the water before heading to the celebration. The bride removed her veil to show off her chic up do and get ready to party.

Their reception was a luxurious outdoor affair, complete with elegant white tents, glistening string lights, and loads of flowers. Ferrero Rocher candies served as part of the escort card display and a glittering gold and white cake was a picture-perfect centerpiece.

As the day turned to dusk, the live band kept guests dancing throughout the night. The fun-loving bride and groom enjoyed toasts from loved ones and shared laughs under the glowing tent.

And at the end of the evening, with Greg’s arms wrapped around his bride, Laura was the epitome of bridal style. Not for her dress, shoes, hair or makeup, but for the sheer joy worn authentically across her face.
