Bridal Beauty 101: Finding That Perfect Style for Your Gown

You’ve found that dress of your dreams and now it’s time to focus on putting the entire look together with hair and makeup.  Need help? Well, we’ve got you covered, because today we’re joining forces with Jennie Kay for a quick run-down on all things beauty with tips + tricks on achieving that glam wedding day look, no matter the gown or style you’re dreaming of. Let’s get started.

LOOK 1: CASUAL GLAMOUR

Your style? Laid-back with a big ol’ side of sophistication. Which means rocking a stunning gown that shows some skin and hair + make-up that is just as sleek and glamorous. Jennie Kay suggests pairing your dream dress with a rope braid pony or soft low bun that is dressy enough for a wedding, but is also completely effortless.

LOOK 2: VINTAGE ELEGANCE

You’re a vintage-inspired lady looking to rock that elegant lace number, but still maintain a modern, yet sexy edge. Jennie Kay’s tip? A bright red lip for that much-needed side of sophistication and a stunning updo that frames one side of the face, plus sweeps across the back in a beautiful style that is reminiscent of the past.

“Look at the way you wore your hair at your initial dress fitting. It usually mimics your initial idea on how your hair should be.” – Jennie Kay Beauty

LOOK 3: BOHO BEAUTY

Crave a look that is soft, romantic and free, just like you and your wedding? Then this fab boho look from Jennie Kay Beauty is sooo for you. Simply keep your hair natural in wave and texture and add three gorgeous braids for a little pop of WOW.  Want to add a little glamour to the look? Really make those eyes stand out with just the right shade of shadow and mascara.

[dotted]

LOOK 4: SWEETLY CLASSIC

For those of you who want to keep it sweet + classic on the Big Day, Jennie Kay suggests a low twisted ponytail that is equal parts show-stopping and wholesome. Pair it with subtle makeup (like a light pink lip) and a gown that has just a pop of sass and the results are absolutely timeless.

[dotted]

LOOK 5: TOUSLED SOPHISTICATION

Waves are a girl’s best friend and when it comes to a wedding day look that is equal parts laid-back and sophisticated, Jennie Kay keeps those tousled waves down with just a few sweet strands pulled back for a look that is all sorts of romantic. Add some soft pink lips and some barely-there makeup to complete the look.

A Wedding Every Southern Bride Needs to See

Simply put, this wedding is the epitome of Southern elegance. It’s a day steeped in faith, family, and tradition with details like a custom crest designed by Lemontree Calligraphy & Illustration and a live painter at the ceremony to capture the scene. A Charleston Bride planned Morgan and Daniel’s celebration and the incredible Simply Sarah Photography is to thank for every last photo.

From the Bride…I transferred schools my sophomore year of high school, and as I was walking out to the carpool line the first day, I saw the most handsome boy standing outside waiting on his mom. I hopped straight in the car and told my mom I had just seen “THE cutest boy alive,” and searched for him all night on Facebook and found nothing. The next day, I told my only friend at school I had at the time about the boy I had seen the day before but I didn’t have enough details for her to know exactly who it was. Embarrassingly I have to admit we decided his nickname would just be “baby” (he had a baby face) until I could figure out his name. She finally figured out who I was talking about and she told me that “baby” was Daniel Fields and he was a freshman.

I sent the text and he responded and really from that point forward the conversation never stopped. We talked all summer long and would ask each other every question in the book. I finally mustered up the courage to ask him to go out to eat with my family and our best family friends and he agreed. After that first night of hanging out we practically hung out every single day after and were absolutely obsessed with each other. We became each other’s best friend and truly were a part of one another’s families.

We dated for two years, and then it was time for me to go off to college. Much to my dismay, we decided that we needed to break up and have time to really mature and take advantage of all the opportunities we could without always basing our decisions on one another. It absolutely crushed me, but I knew if it was meant to be the Lord would find even the craziest way to bring us back together and He most certainly did. We decided to start dating again and it honestly felt like nothing had ever changed. Of course we were much more mature than we were in high school, but it was just like it was always meant to be. Immediately, we were one another’s best friend again and we didn’t do anything without the other. Our families were overjoyed and we were one big happy family all over again.

Really, our wedding day was everything I could have ever dreamed of and more. All of the details we planned beforehand made me so incredibly anxious for the big day and when I saw them in person it was like a real-life fairy tale come true.

As special as all of the moments were, nothing was sweeter than standing at the top of the aisle, connecting eyes for the first time that day with my groom, and seeing all of our family and closest friends standing there to witness our marriage. Knowing that each of our guests traveled all the way to Charleston to celebrate with us was overwhelmingly touching, but even more so knowing that each of those people has greatly encouraged, supported, prayed for, loved, and mentored Daniel and me was an indescribable feeling. From the start of the planning process, we committed to making our wedding day a gift for our guests as much as it was a celebration for us, so to see the smiles on their faces the whole night was absolutely priceless!

The Dreamiest Desert Engagement Session

Can we please have an in-depth discussion about how incredibly BEAUTIFUL this engagement session is?! Captured by Kyle John Photography, it’s Joshua Tree like you’ve never seen it before. From the sweetest (and coolest) couple we’ve ever seen, it’s all waiting for you to fall madly in love with via The Vault!

From Linn PettersonWe were road-tripping through California, when Jessica and Daniel flew out to meet us at Joshua Tree. None of us had been there before, so we were astounded by the breathtaking beauty we found in this otherworldly place. The stark landscape, with crumbling boulders, and cacti stretching toward the harsh sun, was so extraordinary and provided a complimentary backdrop for the genuine tenderness Jessica and Daniel expressed toward each other throughout our session together. It was such a pleasure spending the day with this couple. Watching their playful interactions and unguarded love for one another was inspiring. At the end of the day we climbed up on top of one of the boulders and watched as the sun slowly colored the golden landscape red, then purple then pitch dark, leaving only the moon and the stars as sources of light. And feeling slightly sentimental, we headed home, thankful for the unsurpassable gift of nature, and the unassuming greatness of the love that had unfolded before our eyes.

Karena of ‘Tone It Up’ Reveals Her Hawaii Wedding Photos!

When we first learned that Karena Dawn of Tone It Up was engaged we waited with baited breath for for her wedding day. Oh boy oh boy did it live up to our expectations. Captured by Jana Williams Photography, it’s Hawaii like you’ve never seen it before and we’ve got it all in The Vault!

How we met

I met Bobby years ago (he went to college with Brian , Katrina’s husband, in Boston), but we didn’t start dating until he moved into the apartment below me four years ago. We instantly grew closer and he showed me how powerful a deep love is. Life is about love and the relationships and memories we make… this is what gets us through the unknown. It frees us. We were talking about getting engaged for a year, but Bobby really wanted to surprise me. And believe me, I’m a hard one to surprise! Once he realized both of our families would also be at the Tone It Up Retreat last September (2015) , he knew it was the perfect setting at Reef Point, Laguna Beach. It’s one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever been and to be able to share it with our families and community was perfect and beautiful.

Why we chose Hawaii

The Hawaiian islands have always held a special place in my heart. It was years ago that I would come visit to explore the beauty, learn to surf, and hike through a rain forest for the first time. There were a few occasions when I visited the Big Island (home of Ironman Triathlon!!) to shoot for Zoot Sports and the Triathlete Magazine Swimsuit Issue. Later, Kat and I would shoot our first two Beach Babe Workouts on the islands too! So many memories have been made there! I wanted to share the magic of the Hawaiian Islands with Bobby, so we took our first vacation together on Kauai. It was just a few months in, when I was still just dating ‘the neighbor,’ but it felt really special. It was the place where we first said ‘I love you.’ We were daydreaming at the time and told each other that if it works out and we ever get married, we’d do it here!

The Vision

We wanted our wedding to highlight the beauty of Kauai and Hanalei Bay. The colors of the wedding complemented the surroundings with blues, greens and earth tones. Decor was clean, simple and modern. We used green succulents and white linens. To add a personal touch I used one of my abstract ocean paintings as the print for the menus and place cards. Overall, the most important aspect was having an unforgettable vacation with our closest family and friends….which we did!

Highlights

Without a doubt, the highlight of the day was saying our vows (and the 6 rainbows that Hawaii blessed us with!) We chose to write our own vows, which is a big responsibility on your wedding day! Ultimately it was the best decision we could have made, and we were able to express our feelings from the heart, with a few tears. It also meant a lot that my dad played guitar and sang our first dance, and our friend Jordan T performed at the reception for our wild and fun dance party! I could go on… There were so many perfect moments!

Thoughts on planning

Since one of the goals of our destination wedding was to make it a vacation, I wanted to keep the planning as simple as possible. After all – work keeps me super busy, and it was important for me to save the time off for our honeymoon. The St. Regis made planning incredibly enjoyable, simplified and exciting. Bobby and I knew exactly what we wanted and they made it happen! From the decor to the cake, it was perfection for us!

I genuinely love hosting Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday to roundup a gathering of loved ones (and not just because we get to indulge in the leftovers). Mostly because it’s a rare chance to pretty up the dining room table and pull out all the entertaining stops. And of course, the love and laughter that ensues around said table. Hosting this year, too? Here are 15 beauties to inspire your turkey day scene.

A Colorful Dusty Blue + Peach Wedding

Are you on the hunt for the hottest new color palette? Then meet what is sure to be your new favorite pairing, dusty blue and pretty peach. Captured by Michelle Boyd Photography this is one celebration at The Venue at Crooked Willow Farms that you’re sure to love. See it all in The Vault!

From the Bride’s Cousin…This celebration is particularly near and dear to my heart because the bride is my sweet cousin, Erin. Although our families have not lived in the same state for 23 years, we have remained especially close. We usually see each other at least once a year and always manage to pick up right where we left off. When Erin reached out to ask me to help plan her wedding, oh my heart–cue the waterworks. We spent the next year meticulously planning her day to be a perfect representation of her and BJ’s love story and the things they hold most dear–family, friends, and each other.

Erin and BJ met at her horse barn in the Colorado mountains, so Crooked Willow Farms (still a working farm, with horses!) was the perfect backdrop for their big day. (Literally–check out that ceremony site with the foothills in the background!) We selected a color palette of “elevated pastels” that provided a perfect, natural touch of color to the barn setting. I convinced the florist–Bristol Lane–and the photographer–Michelle Boyd–to make the trip with me to provide the gorgeous blooms and capture the day. Jessica Crowell designed the custom invitation suite and day-of paper goods, which included scenes from around the venue. (One of my favorite details!)

Better than the carefully curated details, though, was the contagious joy between Erin and BJ. They are very much in love and perfectly suited for each other. It was truly an honor to play such a special part in their day and to witness their “I do’s.” So many congratulations to the happy couple!

6 Easy Ways to Update Your Kitchen Without Starting from Scratch

Working your way towards a dream kitchen doesn’t have to mean a full blown demolish and rebuild of your existing space. Sometimes it’s as easy as reworking what you’ve got, adding a new countertop and accessorizing accordingly. Kendall Simmons is a mastermind of stunning interiors and her latest kitchen is proving you don’t have to start from scratch. Read up on her 6 tips for crafting a gorgeous kitchen on a less than total rebuild budget. Plus tour even more of this pretty kitchen shot by Alyssa Rosenheck here.

Sometimes there’s no other option than to totally tear out your kitchen and start fresh. But more often than not the bones are great, they just need to be reimagined in a different way! As little as one small change can make the difference between hating your kitchen and loving it. By adopting some of the following ideas, you can breath new life into your kitchen!

 Change Out Your Countertops

This home is only about 8 years old, but because it was originally built as a spec house the Kitchen finishes were basic builder grade (read: speckled brown granite and tumbled travertine tile). Our first order of business was to pull out all of the old countertops and backsplash. Habitat for Humanity was thrilled to receive the donation of all of this pristine granite! I replaced the brown granite countertops and travertine backsplash with a combination of polished Calacutta Lincoln marble and solid white quartz.

Instead of using tile for the backsplash, I used full slabs of the same marble as the island countertop for a continuous look. Think outside the box with your countertops! You can add an interesting edge detail, or even a waterfall island like this one! Designer Tip: If you’re nervous about fully committing to marble countertops throughout your entire kitchen, consider using it on your island only. Then you can use a more durable quartz or granite near your range where the wear and tear is heavier.

Add New Decorative Lighting

If your kitchen doesn’t have any decorative lighting, add some! Especially over an island. In most cases, it’s easier than you think for your electrician to add them onto an existing switch. Designer Tip: When in doubt, scale your kitchen lighting up! Bigger is almost always better over a kitchen island, just keep the fixtures relatively ‘open’ so that they don’t obstruct your line of site through the room.

Swap Your Standard Counter Stools for Something Cozier

Replace your hard, uncomfortable counter stools with ones that feel like real furniture. Swap out hard wood or metal for comfy upholstered seats with backs. If you’re concerned about stains, consider your most durable options. For this kitchen, the bench counter stool has a washable velvet slipcover that can be laundered as needed or replaced if anything horrible happens to it! The individual stools are upholstered in hair-on cowhide which is inherently stain resistant. Leather is another great option.

Refinish Your Existing Cabinetry

If you love the existing layout of your kitchen, and especially if you’re keeping your existing appliances, I recommend repainting or refinishing the cabinetry that you have. It’s the change that will give you the most bang for your buck. But, unless you’re a seriously good painter, I wouldn’t recommend doing it yourself. Hire a professional who can spray the doors and drawers to get a perfect finish. I promise it’s worth every penny! The existing cabinetry in this Kitchen was cream with a brown glaze that was seriously dating the room. I had the cabinets painted Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray and it completely reinvented the room!

Exchange Your Cabinet Hardware For Some Bling

Think of your cabinet hardware like jewelry. Replace your boring old knobs and pulls with a more sophisticated style. Consider something colorful or with an interesting inlay. Or, glass knobs are a great way to incorporate some sparkle without going too far over the top.

Paint a Chalkboard Wall

Do something fun! Consider adding a chalkboard or magnetic wall. Your kids and guests can leave messages for you, or you can do what I did and bring in a chalk artist to design artwork for special occasions! Either way, it adds a fun and interactive element to your room!

An Ivory, Pink + Rose Gold Ballroom Affair

When college sweethearts, Danni and Matthew tied the knot they brought in two of the very best to capture their day. *Enter* Love & Light Photographs and NST Pictures who worked their magic to craft a photo gallery and film they’ll treasure forever. Take a peek at their ivory, pink and rose gold affair for inspiration galore.

From NST Pictures… Danni and Matthew met on the first day of college…At Bed, Bath and Beyond! They already had mutual friends, but bumping into each other on the first day of school and then realizing they were in the same dorm quickly brought them together to become best friends and then start dating a year later. Seven years after that, they finally tied the knot at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, New York!

It was an emotional day that was filled with tears of love and, of course, laughter. The first look with the bride and her parents couldn’t have been sweeter, with Danni dabbing her mother’s eyes with a tissue. With black tie on the chic invitation, friends and family showed up dressed to the nine’s and watched as the gorgeous couple were pronounced husband and wife under a beautiful chuppah. Amidst a color scheme of ivory, rose gold and pink, Danni and Matthew’s chic modern Jewish wedding was the perfect fairytale “happily-ever-after.”

From Love and Light Photographs Danni and Matt may have crossed paths with each other when they were 13 years old but it wasn’t until they traveled all they way to Bloomington, Indiana that they fell in love. On the very first day of school Danni spotted Matt at Bed, Bath and Beyond and found the courage to reintroduce herself. The two learned that they were living just one floor apart in the same dorm and instantly became best friends. Danni and Matt’s relationship started with a friendship, however, it was obvious to every single one of their friends that this blonde haired, blue-eyed couple were perfect for each other- and they were right!

After what felt like a very long summer apart, they returned to Indiana University for their sophomore year where Matt finally mustered the confidence to make his move. Since that day, their love has only continued to grow stronger and stronger, along with that amazing friendship that started it all.

Classic Spring Wedding With a Minimalist Approach

Jean Luc and Lana knew exactly what they wanted when it came to their spring wedding in Napa. Think crisp, clean, minimalist design with hints of soft blue amongst a sea of neutrals. Cole Drake Events took that vision and ran with it and Jose Villa, per usual, totally delivered behind the camera. More right this way…

From Cole Drake EventsFrom the moment we met Jean Luc and Lana, it was clear how much this couple was in love. They were so excited to celebrate their love with one another with their closest friends and family members. Lana and Jean Luc wanted a clean design, a minimalist approach to their overall décor, and with the help of Kathleen Deery and Cole Drake Events, it was a complete success.

For the ceremony, the couple exchanged their vows under a newly designed arbor just after a fresh “good luck” afternoon sprinkle subsided. After the ceremony, their guests were greeted with tray passed beverages while they noshed on delicious canapes from the Carneros Inn. Organic linens and white florals embellished their table top while Amber Moon Designs popped hints of blue with their place cards (which also were their menus).

As a nod to Jean Luc’s heritage, guests dined on Coq au Vin, as one of their entrée choices, in a warmly lit room. Once dancing commenced, our room transformed with a color change to a dance club and guests danced well into the late evening. Jean Luc and Lana had a very specific idea of what they wanted for their wedding day and Lana’s reaction was absolutely perfect when she saw her vision finally come to fruition.

An Uber Romantic Pastel Pink Wedding

Call me a cliché, but there is just something special about a wedding filled with pretty pink touches. Take this piece of pastel perfection from the madly talented Hello Blue Photo for example. Blooming with the loveliest blush hues that’ll make you melt. See it all in The Vault!

From the Bride…After being a part of weddings and seeing wedding ideas on Pinterest I already knew exactly how I wanted my wedding; the colors, the theme, the elements and details. I had so many ideas but couldn’t tie them all together and felt a little overwhelmed by all of the ideas on Pinterest. It is so easy to get carried away pinning too many ideas! Lucky for us, having a creative family paid off when it came to all of the details. Jaclyn at Down Emery Lane worked with me to create all of the extra details for the big day. She made the ceremony programs which listed all of the names of the bridal party members and family. I loved the custom reserved signed for the ceremony benches. I wanted my family to know how important they were to me and I loved having their names on their seats to also avoid any confusion. The lantern at the ceremony was lit in remembrance of the father of the groom and although subtle, it was a nice touch that made the groom know he was loved by those here and in Heaven. Down Emery Lane created the circular thank you for the chargers on the table. It was VERY important for our guests to know how much they mean to us. We wanted them to feel special, this was OUR day, and we were so happy to have each of them there. When two people get married, it is just not the two who join, but two families that join as well. We wanted everyone to feel as loved as we did. I loved the names on each of the table settings and the guests found that as a lovely surprise when they arrived at their seat. The kids all had clipboards with custom designed coloring sheets for their entertainment during the wedding.

When meeting with wedding photographers, I knew I wanted to make sure we both felt super comfortable and have a connection with them. Once we started talking at our first meeting with Christina, we knew she was the one. I felt like I knew her for a long time and she really understood us and the vision we had for our special day. We knew we wanted someone that made us feel comfortable and someone to capture candid photos with not a lot of editing, Christina did just that! During the process I felt like our communication was genuine, she really cares about her clients and what they want. We felt like she could take charge of our wedding to capture the photos we wanted and make sure everyone felt comfortable in front of the camera. Christina is amazing, we had a lot of family photos and a wedding party of fourteen, and she took charge and took the most amazing photos!
