Colorful Jamaica Wedding Designed With Effortless Island Elegance

If I had to describe this wedding in one short phrase, “easy, breezy island elegance” are the words that jump straight to mind. Karen and Mark hoped to give their guests a tropical escape and a celebration set in Montego Bay, Jamaica totally fit the bill. Shannon Leahy Events and Bows & Arrows infused the affair with color-happy moments, and the one and only Sylvie Gil captured everything behind the camera.

From Sylvie Gil… Karen & Mark’s Caribbean wedding was a lovely spring departure from the bustle of city life. The ceremony and reception were highlighted by richly colored island florals, a bright tropical color palette, and coral and pineapple accents. The couple integrated plenty of custom designs with the surrounding Jamaican culture – monogrammed “escort cups” for guests, ikat table runners, local flowers, and steel drums at the farewell brunch. A relaxed and idyllically beautiful affair, this wedding is the definition of effortless island elegance.

Exclusive: See Alexandra Grecco’s Out-of-this-World Spring 2018 “Stardust” Collection

With every collection, I design our pieces to feel really light and effortless. This season, we have a bit of a celestial theme throughout, and the embroidery is just breathtaking. I wanted the beadwork to feel as though it had fallen from the sky and just dusted the gowns, hence the collection name ‘Stardust.’ I designed this collection for the woman who appreciates a classic silhouette, but also has a bit of whimsy in her. — Alexandra Grecco

Celebrate 20 Years of Gorgeous Reem Acra Wedding Dress with Her Glam Spring 2018 Collection

New York fashion designer Reem Acra debuted her Spring 2018 collection of bridal gowns inspired by the heritage and craftsmanship of the internationally renowned jeweler, Tiffany & Co. United by their common cause of making brides-to-be look and feel their most glamorous, Reem Acra presented an array of bridal gowns with a fashion show at the iconic Tiffany Fifth Avenue flagship store, dually kicking off New York Bridal Fashion Week and Acra’s 20th anniversary.

In true Acra fashion, the show began with an unexpected twist. The first nine models – who entered the runway from elevators that mimicked the signature Tiffany’s blue jewelry box – donned black gowns inspired by the historied setting. The remaining 28 dazzling looks showcased Acra’s ability to combine tradition with a modern aesthetic; redefining the luxury bridal market with each breathtaking design.

After studying the the finest details of various jewelry creations, including the storied Tiffany Diamond, Acra drew upon many Tiffany masterpieces while designing the collection. Sculpted and cut-out bodice details reflect the intricacies of ornate platinum metalwork juxtaposed with the power and vibrancy of Tiffany yellow diamonds. Looping and scrolling bands of geometric diamonds in ribbon and bow motifs inspire romantic embellishments on sheer sleeves, necklines and tulle overlays, while the brilliance of Tiffany’s legendary gemstones Morganite and Kunzite add a blush tone to the mostly traditional color palette.

Keeping Your In-Laws From Becoming Outlaws

We’ve all heard the expression “When you marry the person, you marry the family.” Long-married couples can attest to the truth in that expression. Whether it’s where you spend the holidays, how to raise your children or what you do with your money, your in-laws may have strong feelings on how you live your life. Though their opinions can be annoying (especially when they are regularly expressed), what begins as a nuisance can quickly turn into bigger problems if you and your fiancé don’t establish boundaries around your relationship.

Set the Ground Rules

When parents live relatively close, one of the first boundaries you should set concerns visits to your home. Are you okay with family members dropping by or do they need to schedule in advance? The need for rules also applies for in-laws who come from out of town. If you and your fiancé believe there should be a time limit on visits, you need to communicate that to your in-laws before they arrive at your door. Otherwise, you may find yourselves having a whispering argument in your bedroom because your spouse’s brother is going into his third week sleeping on your couch.

Have the Money Talk

Other boundaries you’ll want to establish are around your finances. O
nce you’re engaged, one or both sets of parents may offer to contribute to the wedding, but what happens after the big day? Will you accept money for student loans, to go on family vacations or for a down payment on a house? Although you may decide a gift or loan is appropriate in certain situations, keep in mind that even the most well-meaning parents might give money with strings attached. Accepting money may inadvertently open the door for certain expectations or unsolicited financial advice. Repeatedly hearing your in-laws’ opinions about how you spend money is sure to cause some tension.

Unwelcome visits or financial intrusion can strain family relations, but nothing will turn your in-laws into outlaws faster than if they disrespect your character, your beliefs or the choices you make. It may be hard to believe that your fiancé’s parents could be painfully critical, but as psychologist Terri Apter found in researching What Do You Want From Me: Learning to Get Along With In-Laws, parental protectiveness doesn’t end when children get married.

Don’t Tolerate Disrespect

For your own well-being, try to understand that any negative comments are less about you and more about a parent’s fundamental desire to see their child happy. However, that doesn’t mean you should accept hurtful criticism. Spouses need to agree not to tolerate either set of in-laws being disrespectful. Each partner should speak to his or her own family members if it becomes necessary to respond to unacceptable behavior. Also, you should both think twice about revealing details to your family (especially parents) when the two of you have an argument. If your fiancé tells his mother you communicated with an ex on social media, she is not likely to forget it even after you two have moved on.

Communication is Key

The key point to remember is that in-law problems are often a sign that a couple hasn’t been proactive in figuring out how to manage family relationships. If the two of you determine and communicate your boundaries, it’s less likely that you’ll have to deal with the fallout from having them crossed. Communication is the key to marital bliss!

An Indian Engagement Shoot That’ll Leave You Speechless

With most of the Groom-to-be’s family in India, these future newlyweds traveled there for a small engagement party pre-wedding… but no party is exactly small in India. Add in some absolutely gorgeous gold gowns, stunning views and even an elephant, and we have an engagement celebration that’ll leave you speechless. Luckily Brumley & Wells tagged along to capture all the beauty for us to enjoy as well – see every moment in our Vault right this way!

From Brumley & WellsBecause most of David’s family still lives in India, David and Ali knew they wanted to have a small engagement party in Kerala, where their family could meet Ali and celebrate their upcoming marriage and their future lives together. In India, however, there is no such thing as a small party. David’s uncle took to planning the gathering, and the evening escalated into a massive celebration, complete with an elephant, a traditional parading of the groom, dancers, musicians, and a feast for hundreds of family members and friends. It was such an honor to be there, and to witness not only the traditional Indian ceremony, but also the kindness and hospitality of the entire family.

From the photographer… Caroline and Taylor met on a business trip with their Dads. Their first date was a bike ride for sushi on the boardwalk (back in NJ), and it was kismet. Three and a half years later, Taylor proposed to Caroline under a gazebo on the beach. They were married on the oldest plantation in South Carolina under towering live oaks with 275 of their closest family + friends.

Sleek Winter Wedding in West Hollywood

There’s something so magical about winter weddings, especially when they’re designed with a sense of modern glamour by So Happi Together. Think white-on-white florals set against a candlelit glow, and you better believe Natalie Bray photographed this West Hollywood affair to perfection.

Sang and Jessica wed on a rainy day in winter. Nonetheless, the weather would not stop their beautiful celebration and kind hearts. They had an absolutely stunning celebration planned by the fabulous So Happi Together.

The colors of white florals, blush linens, and glass were such a perfectly romantic combination. Candles brought in an amazing glow as guests danced the night away. Accents of gold and white grounded the place settings effortlessly. Heavenly blooms created a transcended floral installation of a variety of white blooms.

It was truly magical. Jessica looked gorgeous in her BHLDN gown. A classic and elegant look. What a beautiful celebration and couple.

Making a Rainy Day Wedding Look Downright Gorgeous

From a chance meeting at a local watering hole to a celebration on a 300 acre family home, this wedding is proof that meeting the love of your life can happen just about anywhere; even in a bar. This rainy lakeside affair is both elegant and easy breezy with coordination by Something Blue Lake Geneva, lots of pretty florals by Frontier Flowers and Kristina Lorraine capturing it all to perfection. From the bride… There might be nothing more cliche than a guy and a girl meeting in a bar, but Brandon and Tessa wouldn’t have it any other way. Tessa had moved back home to Chicago in 2011 after a stint living in Argentina and decided to waitress for awhile before making her next move. An ordinary football Sunday turned into one of the most important days of her life, when she was finally introduced to that cute boy from down the street who always came in to have a drink or dinner with his friends. After years of dating in Chicago, Brandon proposed to Tessa on their fourth anniversary after a romantic dinner and drinks overlooking Chicago’s skyline. He designed her engagement ring with the help of one of their mutual friends, incorporating the center stone from her mother’s engagement ring.

The wedding location was easy. Tessa’s father’s home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin was a natural choice — the 300 acre, former farm was always the site of family gatherings and occasions, previously hosting two other family weddings. The lush greenery and tranquil lake was perfect for a rustic, yet elegant wedding. Tessa and Brandon both love personal touches at weddings, and focused on making their wedding unique and special to them.

Little did they know how memorable their wedding would be. After some early morning rain, the sky had cleared to reveal a cloudless, sunny day — perfect for an outdoor ceremony overlooking the lake. About 15 minutes into the ceremony, with Brandon in the middle of his vows, a singular cloud provided a sudden summer storm, bringing the wedding to a brief intermission while guests took shelter under the veranda and the bridal party ducked into the nearby garage. After the brief storm passed, the couple resumed the ceremony outside, only to have it produce a stunning pink sunset.

The bridesmaids wore a mix of blush and sage dresses in different styles, while the groomsmen sported grey, custom suits. The bride chose a lace Anna Meir gown from a boutique in Chicago and the groom wore a navy Banana Republic suit. Guests were then led to a tented reception. When they searched for their place at dinner, place cards indicated the name of a restaurant that was meaningful over the time of Brandon and Tessa’s relationship, including the name of the bar where they met.

Destination Engagement Session Set in Positano

Someone recently asked me about the best place I’ve ever traveled to, and the answer was easy. Positano, Italy. That cliffside scenery is unlike anything in the world, and it’s clear to see why Jenna and Shane chose it as the location for their engagement session photographed by Rebecca Yale. Prepare to be bitten by the travel bug, because this pretty gallery will do just that.

From Rebecca YaleAdding an engagement session to your destination wedding is the perfect way to kick off the celebration of the weekend and have a moment alone for just you and your fiancé amidst all the excitment of the wedding.

Jenna and Shane were married last Fall surrounded by an intimate group of their closest friends and family on the Amalfi Coast. Their wedding celebration lasted the whole week starting with a private romantic tour of Positano just for the two of them to have a moment of relaxation before their guests arrive.

In the summer, Positano beaches are crowded with hundreds of tourists, but during the Fall months the city is much less crowded and we had the whole beach to ourselves and a gorgeous moody backdrop as the rain clouds rolled in over the cliffside.

From Kayla BarkerTwo things go together beautifully – florals and film photography. Myself, Kayla Barker, a film photographer and floral designers Alicia and Adam Rico of Bows & Arrows teamed up to bring together aspiring film photographers and floral designers to learn and work together at our workshop Joshua Tree: A Union of Floral & Film.

We picked the unique and stunning backdrop of Joshua Tree, California as our location and inspiration for the workshop and our two shoots: Elegant Espanola and Mexicali. The photography and floral attendees came together during these shoots to learn about creating together as a team. Invitations and calligraphy by Script Merchant and engraved details by Paper Birch Designs set the scene and mood of the two shoots. Gorgeous tabletop details were provided by Casa de Perrin on beautiful Found Vintage Rentals furniture that were the perfect contrast in the desert landscape. Dresses by Tatyana Merenyuk and veils by Girl With a Serious Dream were accented with beautiful floral headpieces and stunning bouquets by the attendees with Frou Frou Chic ribbon. Stunning make-up and hair by Amy Clarke for The Halcyon Agency and rings by Trumpet & Horn enhanced our models’ beauty.

Two days of creating and photographing beauty in the California desert landscape lead to new friendships, an abundance of beauty, new inspiration and the union of floral and film.

Want to also learn about destination wedding photography from Kayla Barker and shoot beautiful florals by Bow + Arrows too? Join Kayla Barker, along with special guest, Gabrielle Hurwitz of Style Me Pretty, Joy Proctor, Bows + Arrows and team in the beautiful Normandy countryside of France from July 10-13.

A Top Photographer Shares Ideas for Your Bridal Session

Whenever I’m putting together a wedding gallery, I find myself drawn to the getting ready sequence time and time again. A beaming bride filled with anticipation before she walks down the aisle makes for incredible portraits, and luckily we’ve got photographers like Jen Huang to capture them. Jen is sharing ideas to pull off the artful, expressive bridal session you want with go-to poses for your big moment in front of the camera.

Use Hands to Frame the Face

Hands are one of those elements that can change a portrait entirely. We are deeply aware of hand gestures because we use them like words to communicate. Always make sure that hands are relaxed and soft. When we clench our muscles, it can convey tension and apprehension. When you’re placing hands around a face, make sure that there is a skin to skin connection and that both hands are at different heights. Placing them asymmetrically is more visually pleasing and can make your image more dynamic.

Find an Interesting Angle

In a busy getting ready space, it can be hard to move around or see things from a different perspective. Don’t forget to have your photographer shoot from different angles. From straight on but also from behind and from the side. It may seem simple, but these poses are often forgotten during a fast-paced day.

Remember the Close Up Details

Sometimes I like to zoom in on details that I think are unique or dynamic, a portrait doesn’t always have to include a face. Close ups can make a portrait feel more intimate. To help with these types of images, I use macro filters on my cameras so that I can shoot in close proximity. Photographers can also use their close-up filters on wedding details such as rings and invitations.

The Full-Length Look

In a small space, it can be difficult to shoot a full-length portrait without a wide lens. If your getting ready space is small, try to find a location outside or nearby that will give you a longer “runway” for the shot. Here I actually stood on a chair to give me a little bit of additional height to capture the full train of the bride’s dress.

Try a Double Exposure

A tip for photographers – double exposures are challenging but also fun! With film, you never quite know how your exposures will appear on top of each other, although with practice you can start to memorize where your shots will line up. If you’re just starting out with double exposures, try taking a portrait and layering in a pattern – for example, a close up of a bouquet or the lace on a bride’s dress. Using elements from the wedding can make the double exposure even more meaningful.

A Dark & Moody Wedding Like You’ve Never Seen

Merielle and Bob are without a doubt one of the most stylish couples to EVER grace our pages. Inspired by her black diamond engagement ring – not to mention her impeccable personal style – Merielle wore a black velvet wedding dress with Bob in a floral dinner jacket for an equally dapper look. Guests dressed the part in black and white while feasting their eyes on the design work of Shannon Leahy and so many talented vendors who made it happen. Settle in for the long haul, because these images by Jose Villa will leave you awe inspired.

From Shannon Leahy…. Merielle and Bob were married in an intimate civil ceremony at San Francisco City Hall but wanted to have a fabulous reception to celebrate with their family and friends. Aside from being the sweetest couple, they have amazing taste. Merielle LOVES flowers, and on any given day you’ll see her dressed stylishly head-to-toe in black rocking her rose gold and black diamond engagement ring. Thus the design was born: sophisticated black-tie glamour with over-the-top floral moments.

It was important for the wedding to be a wonderful evening for their guests, and to still be unique to the couple. They served a beautiful vegan menu and the bride was show-stopping in a gorgeous, black velvet gown and the groom wore a floral dinner jacket. The wedding guests were equally chic, dressed in black and white.

They ended the night by gifting their guests custom-inscribed bottles of Dom Pérignon and departed in a vintage Rolls Royce. The evening was a beautiful celebration of their union, and a night to remember.
