Get Fit For Your Wedding Day With Peter Kraus – Week One

Happy Monday, everyone! We are so excited to have you here. Are you ready to begin your fitness journey with us? Week 1, here we go!

This week’s circuit training focuses on your hamstrings and chest — please be sure to watch the video above for proper form on each of these exercises! We cannot stress safety enough.

Heads up, ladies: your arms are going to be SORE this week! I just did these circuits this morning and could really feel the burn…but trusting that Peter will get me looking beautiful for my wedding, I powered through!

Season 13 of The Bachelorette ended last Monday, and most of you know what happened with Rachel and Peter…but I’m happy to report that our dear PK has had a few months since the show ended to heal from their breakup, and he’s feeling more optimistic than ever!

Despite Peter’s (completely understandable) desire to take his romantic relationships on the slower side, his approach to getting back down to business has been totally the opposite. When I proposed (get it?! Pun intended.) that we create a fitness program to help brides get ready for their weddings, he dove in head first, thrilled at the opportunity to get to know the SMP audience and guide you all through one of the most exciting times in your lives!

So, if you want to take these workouts one step further, we’ve put together a sample meal plan for you ladies, as well. Feel free to use this as a template for how you could be eating during the next eight weeks!

The biggest nutritional change you can make, though, is to drink PLENTY of water during this program. Think basically one gallon of water each day. Flushing out toxins will be so crucial to your success over the next eight weeks!

Dinner is always the hardest for me, so here is one of my favorite recipes — don’t worry, it’s totally compliant with the nutrition plan above!

XO,

Molly

Super Chic + Sweet Los Angeles Wedding

Can you combine insanely chic glamour with complete down to earth emotion and love? Oh yes you can. Madison and Jim are the perfect example of it all, with one of the most stylish weddings I’ve seen in awhile – all while being two of the sweetest people ever (and they’re dog people, so they’re automatic winners in my book). Jana Williams snapped up all the beauty and Hoo Films captured all the action live – and we’re the lucky ones who get to witness it over and over again – enjoy!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/214195388 600 338]

From Hoo FilmsIt was almost too much beauty for one place. Madison and Jim’s wedding at Hotel Bel Air was filled with love, emotion, laughter, and lots of dancing. The day started with some heart-breaking news, but it was nothing that Madison and Jim’s partnership couldn’t handle together. The moment she saw him, all was right. The love and passion between this gorgeous couple is one to be envied. The celebrations continued throughout the evening with so much love in the air. And we all know what’s going to happen next… a million rescue dogs and a million babies! :) Enjoy this romantic trailer with amazing personal vows!

From Jana WilliamsHaving the opportunity to photography Madison and Jim’s big day forever changed me! These two New Yorkers had not one, but two ceremonies. They tied the knot in New York but knew they wanted to have a spring destination wedding to spend with their loved ones in sunny SoCal. Like many brides, she struggled with deciding if she wanted a classic “princess” dress or choose one more fitted. Finally Madison decided on an avant-garde dress by designer Berta. With the custom train, Madison looked chic and timeless! The reception was elegant and modern with the use of white and rose gold decor.

Before Jim, Madison had another man in her life. That man was her dog, Eugene! She is a huge dog activist and has firm beliefs on adopting rather than “shopping.” On the day of Jim and Madison’s wedding they had to make a tough decision and put Eugene down. (The same day, ya’ll!) Having to put down her longtime best fur friend, she knew this was Eugene telling her that he was okay with Jim coming into her life! I mean, if that alone isn’t making you tear up just a little bit, take a look at their wedding video to catch her speech!

5 Totally Fun + Unexpected Wedding Weekend Events

You can’t go wrong with a mimosa-filled brunch or a fun outdoor rehearsal dinner—but why not try something different? Keep your guests entertained and intrigued before and after your wedding with these unexpected weekend events.

Rebecca Yale Portraits

CITY/GROUP TOUR
While some may jet off on their honeymoon the morning after their wedding, many couples are choosing to stick around an extra day or two, especially when guests are coming from out of town. If this is something you want to do, consider booking a group tour the next day. Rent out a double-decker city bus or a trolley, or book a walking tour, and let you and your guests discover the city where you just said “I Do” together.

BOWLING
Start the fun early with some nice competition during a bowling game the night before the nuptials. A lot of local bowling alleys have recently stepped up their game, offering cocktails and music videos to create a celebratory atmosphere. Consider putting people who don’t know each other too well into teams; this will allow for a friendlier vibe on the day of the wedding. And don’t forget to list your bowling name as “bride to be!”

Cambria Grace Photography

COOKING CLASS
Instead of everyone sitting down to have a meal, why not get hands on and have everyone make their own food? Book a private class so all your guests can partake in a more intimate setting. Your friends and family will walk away with a delicious meal and possibly a new skill in the kitchen.

Kayla Snell Photography

FITNESS CLASS
Nothing gets people going quite like some adrenaline. Pump up the speed of the weekend with a fitness class. Let everyone de-stress during a calming yoga class the morning before or the morning of the wedding or kick it into high gear with a wedding party cycle class the morning after—it’s a surefire way to get those wedding hangover blues (or real hangovers) out of your mind.

Sarah Kate, Photographer

WINE/BEER TASTING
Sure, you’ll be offering wine and beer at the wedding, but having a tasting is great way to get everyone socializing. Find a local brewery that has some great craft beer options (and can maybe even give a tour of the grounds) or a winery or wine shop that offers tastings—it’s the perfect party before the party.

Monet’s Water Lilies Inspired This Editorial + It’s Just as Incredible

This Claude Monet-inspired wedding editorial photographed by Peter & Veronika landed on my desk the very same week I saw his infamous Water Lilies at the Musée de l’Orangerie – and I can’t stop swooning! The gorgeous, pastel fresco walls of Theresia Chateau, multiple wild-feeling bouquets by Floretally, and hint of blue in the Bride and Groom’s attire all capture that peaceful beauty of the beloved impressionist paintings. Take a trip to the gallery, because this shoot is sure to inspire awe, just like the Water Lilies.

From Peter & VeronikaWhen creating a concept for this photo shoot, we were very excited about the stunning old frescoes preserved at the main hall of Theresia Chateau. The fresco walls are painted in remarkable muted pink and blue colors, with accents of menthol green and white. Such a color combination led us to Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series that are of a similar nature. Thus Monet became a great inspiration for us. Monet’s paintings are full of flowers, nature, and vivid life, but on the other hand they evoke a sense of peace. Although they are painted in oils, they remind one of the watercolor effect. Inspired by all these elements, we ended up aiming to combine the beauty of nature and art. We used seasonal spring flowers, especially lilacs, tulips, and clematis. Soft calligraphy with a touch of watercolor along the edges of the stationery, soft textures throughout the decor, and a gorgeous gown were picked to create a peaceful impression and easy-going feeling for the overall design. We also tried to show that the nature is the biggest artist, so flowers were tied in bouquets of irregular shapes creating a sense of natural motion – exactly like Monet’s paintings – without repetitive patterns and symmetry.

Personal Meaning Makes Every Wedding Prettier

When it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be…. and in this case, I’m referring to the fantastic venue for these “I do’s”. The park that it resided in, well, that’s where the Bride’s mother’s parents had their own wedding pics taken years ago. And the date that worked out, June 10th? Same day that the Bride’s father’s parents wed; all in all, it was meant to be if we do say so ourselves. And so this wedding took place, with love and personal meaning filling the air and Rachel Pearlman and Tweed Weddings captured it all – see it play out below and even more pretty in our gallery right this way!

From the Bride… Andrew and I had probably been in, and to, nearly 20 weddings combined throughout our relationship, so we had a good idea about what kind of wedding we wanted to have once we got engaged. We both come from families who love food, so I started researching caterers first. When I came across JAM, I was sold and knew we needed them. From the elaborate harvest table displays of meats and cheeses, to their “by hand” methods, we knew this food would leave our guests feeling full and happy. When it came to the venue, we knew we did not want a ballroom feel, and also knew we wanted to have the ceremony and reception at the same place. We also decided that having some outdoor elements was a must, and thought a tented reception would be unique and fun. Fortunately, JAM catered at several venues in Pennsylvania, many of which had tents and provided beautiful backdrops for a ceremony.

During our search, we really liked a few of their venues we looked at, but they never felt perfect. We had heard of the American Swedish Historical Museum, but it didn’t make it to our initial list until we brought it up with my parents. When we mentioned the museum and that it was in FDR Park in South Philadelphia, we heard a list of stories about how my parents used to hang “by the lakes” as kids and my mother’s parents even had their wedding photos taken in the park. After hearing this, we made an appointment to check it out. As soon as I walked into the museum, I could picture myself getting married there. The staircase and high ceilings were so grand and beautiful, and unlike anything I had seen at other venues we visited. When we saw the tent, overlooking the park and lake, I could picture us dancing and singing along with our friends and family under the sky and bistro lights. And when we saw the gazebo by the lake in front of the museum, where my mother’s parents had taken their wedding photos 60+ years before, I just knew we had to choose this as our venue. We had decided June would be the best month for us, giving us over a year to plan, plus we thought we’d have the best chances for good weather. When we chose June 10th, my dad then reminded me that it was also the day HIS parents were married! With so many connections to the museum and the date, we knew we made the right choice.

We wanted our wedding to be beautiful and classy, but we also wanted our guests to have fun and feel comfortable, so I tried to make sure I kept the “casual-elegance” theme in mind throughout my planning. I have always loved more neutral colors, and though the blush color palette with accents of gold would be classy and timeless. When I saw our invitation suite on Minted, I thought it matched perfectly with the style of the venue – classic and elegant, with some fun shimmering gold foil. My bridesmaids wore shades of pink and purple/lavender – dresses they picked themselves; the groomsmen for wore blue suits with lavender boutonnieres and pale pink ties.

For florals, I knew I wanted to use a lot of greenery, mixed with light and whimsical flowers, and have always loved the smell of eucalyptus and lavender. When we first met with our florist, I shared a few photos of centerpieces and bouquets that I liked, and they provided great advice and suggestions, so I knew they would be able to bring my vision to life in a beautiful way. Our table settings were kept simple with the centerpieces of wildflowers, peonies and eucalyptus, and accented with a few gold mercury candles. The museum itself was so beautiful, that I didn’t feel like we needed to add much. For the ceremony, we just added some candles and eucalyptus along the staircase.

I had a close friend design and create 99% of our wedding signs, including a beautiful welcome sign/mirror, as well as our tables numbers made with gold and purple foil. My sister-in-law was our officiant – she played a special role in getting Andrew and I together. Several photos of our grandparents at their weddings lined the table at the entrance of the museum, including the one of my mother’s parents in the gazebo by the lake.

Andrew and I live in the house where my father grew up, and also where his mother was born. While the house has had some upgrades since then, we have kept many of elements, including the bedroom furniture, the same. When my grandmother got married, she was photographed in her bedroom getting ready for her big day, so I thought it would be really special if I could “re-create” some of those photos since the room still looks practically the same, and I also had some of the pieces, like a comb and mirror, that she had used on her day (which was also June 10, 1950).

The clutch I used was my “something borrowed” from my cousin/bridesmaid – it was made from lace of wedding dresses of our mothers and grandmothers and hand sewn by her cousin for her wedding day.

We did our first look in the gazebo where my grandparents did their wedding photos, which made that moment feel even more special.

Capturing our amazing day was really important to us, and we were so lucky to know Rachel and have her as our friend before we professionally worked with her for our wedding. She made us feel so comfortable, when we normally feel quite awkward in front of a camera, and she captured so many special, intimate moments between us and our family/friends.

Charming Summertime Wedding at the Chicago Botanic Garden

Allow me to introduce this sweet couple, Mandy and Joe. They planned a wildly romantic wedding at the Chicago Botanic Garden complete with neutral tones, organic greenery and a tented reception that’s straight out of our garden party dreams. Olivia Leigh came alongside to capture the magic and there’s a whole gallery just waiting to be opened.

Mandy and Joe are the most amazing, sweet, intelligent couple. They held a gorgeous wedding at the Chicago Botanic Garden, near where they grew up. Mandy looked stunning in a gorgeous gown that caught the light in a gorgeous fashion at the garden.

Their ceremony was held on the Rose Terrace, surrounded on all sides by friends and family. Their vows were emotional and beautifully-written, and the ceremony was capped off with a rendition of “Oh Happy Day” by the musicians as well as some surprise guests in the audience.

The romantic garden theme of their wedding was accented with blush bridesmaids gowns and greens and whites with accents of pink and orange in flowers by Fleur and gorgeous farm tables that looked over the pond at the gardens. It was a magical day that had a wonderful heart and a sense of family.

This Bride Knows How to Accessorize Her Rustic Boho Look

It’s no secret we’re kind of obsessed with all things Hayley Paige, and this adorable Southern Bride rocked a lacey number by the designer for her Boone Hall Plantation nuptials, captured by Dana Cubbage Weddings. Crocheted heels by Schutz, a floral crown by Out of the Garden, and a fishtail braid by Pretty Weird Hair & Makeup Artistry completed her rustic boho look, which was pretty much as amazing as her wedding.

From Dana Cubbage WeddingsWendy and Stephen’s wedding was absolutely amazing from start to finish. I mean, when the Bride is rocking a fabulous Hayley Paige gown AND a flower crown, how could it be anything but amazing?!?! Wendy and Stephen shared a beautiful first look at Boone Hall Plantation before their bridal party joined them on a beautiful peach vintage bus – so cool!  Wendy and Stephen said “I do!” in a gorgeous ceremony that was officiated by Stephen’s dad on the Cotton Dock overlooking Horlbeck Creek. After the ceremony, everyone enjoyed cocktail hour on the patio before entering the Cotton Dock for dinner. Long farm tables lined with green garlands, candles, and sprigs of rosemary at each seat created an elegant, rustic feel. And those chandeliers… So pretty! It was an amazing evening and at the end of the night, Wendy and Stephen exited through a tunnel of sparklers.

Forget Netflix… This Master Bath is All About Bubbles, Wine and Chill

We all have that one room that you just don’t have the time, the money or maybe the gumption to tackle. And after 10 years of renovation, the home of Christina McKenzie was nearly complete… except for the 1990’s era master bath; a.k.a that room. So you can say this space was 10 years in the making and you know what? It was so WORTH IT. The bathtub moment alone is enough to take your breath away. Take the full tour captured by Heidi Lau right here.

After living in our home for almost 10 years, the Master Bathroom was one of the last untouched rooms in the house. Everything else had had carpets ripped out, walls refinished, kitchen revamped, but the bathroom was a wasteland of 1990’s builders grade garbage. A large strangely shaped room at approximately 11×10, it had (what we called) the cave shower, a large built in soaker tub surrounded by massive amounts of ugly tile, only one sink and a very poorly laid out design.

On top of it being severely ugly, it was very cold. So cold in fact, that I never used the bathroom, ever, unless I had to use the facilities in the middle of the night. Finally it was time to redesign and renovate the room. The plan was to fix the heating issue and re-insulate the entire room properly, add another sink, create a walk-in shower, add more lighting and make it pretty. My vision was that of old world Paris, a little flat’s principle bathroom with a light filled room to prep for the day with all the modern conveniences.

I chose the wood look tile floor for practicality and for the warmth of the tones since I knew I wanted to keep the walls, fixtures and other tiles quite simple and classic. The design and criss-cross pattern, referred to as a “versaille floor” is similar to the all the back rooms of the Versaille Palace in France.

The complimentary vintage mini hexagon look flooring for the shower was a great compliment to the wood tile, and the beveled subway tile is always classic.  All the fixtures are in a brushed nickel for softness and simplicity.

Dressing this pretty room was such a treat! I knew that I wanted to incorporate the golds and navy’s because I just can’t get enough of them. Simple linen drapery added softness behind the tub and was the first layer of texture in the room. The little rug used as the bath mat was the perfect blend of that “bo-ho” feel, but in navy added luxury. Hammam towels are my new favourite thing, light and easy to care for yet luxurious feeling.

The chair was one of those pieces I saw in my minds eye, and longed for that curvy back antique look. But every antique shop I found them at they were in the $200’s, which as an accent to my bathroom, I just couldn’t justify. One day when I stopped by my local re-store (where I found my pretty french doors – only $15!) I saw my chair!!! Only $20, and with a navy velvet to boot! Meant to be.

Koning Design helped to determine the proper space and layout for the shower that best suite the room, since we needed to borrow a little space from the walk-in closet behind it. Their knowledge and ability to see the layout and assist in this area was so worthwhile. They also worked completed all the plumbing work.

Thankfully, my contractor James from Capstone, has previously worked in insulation, so his knowledge of how to address the heating issues was so instrumental in all the hard work that went in behind the walls.

Heidi Lau was kind enough to photograph the room for me and really captured the feel I was trying to create. The best part is that I get to use my space everyday, and it is not only beautiful but so much more functional.

Citrus Wedding Inspiration Gone Totally Chic

When two of our favorite vendors cross paths – looking at you, Koman Photography and Kelly Oshiro – really beautiful things happen. Case in point? This citrus blossom wedding shoot inspired by Santa Barbara in the spring. Some amazing talent like Pretty Vintage Rentals, La Tavola and Bella Belle Shoes brought together the details and as icing on the cake, we’ve got a yummy lemon kumquat cocktail recipe waiting down below.

From Kelly Oshiro… Inspired by the annual blooming of citrus blossom that happens every spring in Santa Barbara, I designed this lemon-centric shoot for Koman Photography. For decor, I foraged lemon on the branch with citrus blossom (this had to be the best smelling shoot ever) which Coco Rose then incorporated into the floral arrangements on the table and in the bouquet. Susan Silverberg created a lemon themed invitation with a beautiful line drawing of citrus which I styled with gorgeous citrine earrings from 33 Jewels and more lemon on the branch. Finally, what better way to use lemons than to make a lemon kumquat cocktail? Featuring locally foraged meyer lemon, local vodka by Cutler’s, a homemade kumquat cordial (St. Germain makes a good substitute) and fresh tarragon.

For the bridal styling, I was inspired by the slightly Spanish feel to Musat’s wedding dresses. I chose a bold red lip and a sleek hairstyle featuring retro finger waves that gathered into a chic and modern chignon by Kohnur. For the ceremony look, the custom dress featured a full skirt, billowy sleeves and a modern take on lace that I absolutely loved. For jewelry, I chose simple yellow Citrine earrings (don’t they look like candy?) which caught and reflected the light. And for the ring, an insane flower ring made by local jeweler, 33 jewels.

For the tabletop design, it was all about color and I picked La Tavola’s new velvet runners in “Golden” as the base for the table. Simple white and clear place settings from Pretty Vintage Rentals and my brass goblets made up the place settings. And for a unique place card idea, I placed the name card underneath the clear plate with some individual citrus leaves and individual lilac blooms. Lush floral arrangements in terra cotta compotes featured featuring citrus on the branch, nasturtium, orchids, and parrot tulips. In between, I placed taper candles from Creative Candles in cafe au lait and then scattered lemon in between.

A special thanks to the Santa Barbara Historical Museum for hosting the shoot and all the vendors who contributed!

Lemon Kumquat Cocktail Recipe

.75 oz Homemade kumquat cordial (or St. Germain)
1oz Meyer lemon juice
Large Pinch Earthtrine Farm fresh tarragon

Combine in shaker, shake vigorously, double stain into chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a tarragon sprig and a meyer lemon twist.

Plan A Picture-Perfect City Hall Wedding

A city hall wedding is a lovely way to avoid the stress that comes with a usual wedding and also a great way to create a small, intimate day but still have lasting memories and celebrate with loved ones.

Read on to learn how to plan some stunning city hall nuptials!

Jasmine Lee Photography

Choose a date
You have so much flexibility on when to get married when you have a city hall wedding! Typically, a traditional venue needs to be booked out nearly a year in advance, but really, you can head over to city hall whenever you want! Have a look at the website for your city’s courthouse, as the days and times can vary between cities. For example, in Chicago City Hall, there are no appointments accepted—it is first come/first served. They hold a special time one Saturday a month for ceremonies, otherwise, they are open during business hours only

Still, minimal planning is required. Be sure to secure your marriage license at least 60 days prior to when you intend to get married, and do not forget it on the day. As long as you’ve got that with you, you could get married during your lunch break on a Tuesday! There’s no way of knowing how busy of a day it may be at city hall, so give yourself a good window of time before they close for the day.

Tenth & Grace

Guest List
Some states require witnesses to be present at the courthouse ceremony, and some don’t. Part of the reason you may have chosen to have this low-key option may be to avoid the overwhelming process of who to invite, and this certainly limits your capacity. Space in the courthouse is limited, so it’s okay to keep your guests to 6-8 max. It’s completely up to you! You and your partner may choose to just have one best friend each, or just immediate family. Whoever you choose, ensure that those people are there to fully support you and only bring the best attitude.

Invest in the Memories
You’ll be saving money all around, but a photographer is something you should absolutely invest in! Do your research and find someone who reflects a style you and your partner love and wish to exude. Have them accompany you to the hall and for a session afterward to capture stunning shots around your home city! Most photographers bill hourly, and as a city hall ceremony typically takes about 15-20 minutes, you can save a hefty sum and still take your time traipsing around, finding prime locations for photos!

You probably won’t need to go far: some courthouses, like the San Francisco City Hall, are architectural gold, and many a beautiful photo has been taken just outside its doors!
If nothing else, invest time and money in a proper photographer that will allow you to relive the memories for years to come.

Jasmine Lee Photography

Dress Code
You can still feel like a bride without breaking the bank. Many designers are featuring new, less traditional looks specifically for city hall weddings or elopements. Your options range from jumpsuits, short frocks, pantsuits and separates. Not only will these make for a super chic bridal look, but they’ll be easier to transition to post-ceremony brunch or to every-day apparel, and they’ll surely be easier on the budget. Check out sites like BHLDN, Sarah Seven, or even Nordstrom.

Keep The Party Going!
Organize some sort of after-event for something to look forward to, and to add to the celebratory vibes of the big day! Even if it’s something easy, like drinks at your favorite bar or dinner at a fancier-than-usual restaurant, invite some of your friends around to toast to your new marital status!

A Birthday Bash Filled With Magic, Unicorns, and Things That Sparkle

Little Adaline has stolen every single heart at Style Me Pretty and she’s about to steal yours too. From the sweetest, floral-filled headband, to a real, live unicorn and an insanely delicious sweets table, this whole shindig captured by Everglow Photo is pure magic.

Our little Unicorn turned 1. She has brought so much magic to our lives, since the moment we found out we were expecting. So what better way to celebrate her first year of life than with magic, flowers, and unicorns. Boho Magic i like to call it. All of the decorations were done by my mom. Your wedding timeline is an essential part of planning your big day. It’s that important sheet of paper that says who needs to be where and when, ensuring that the many moving parts of your wedding work together harmoniously. Avoid the following five timeline hiccups!

Love & Light Photographs

Not leaving enough time for hair and makeup.
The last thing you want is to feel rushed the morning of your wedding day. Schedule your glam team for about an hour a person–so if you have four bridesmaids, yourself, and your mom with hair appointments, plan for six hours. This leaves plenty of time to relax, drink a mimosa, and snag those getting ready pictures of you and your bridesmaids that you’ve been dreaming about.

Not considering a first look.
First looks are becoming more and more commonplace, and it’s easy to see why. With a first look between a bride and groom, you save a ton of time by taking photos beforehand. Your hair and makeup will still be flawless, you’ll be giddy with anticipation, and you won’t have to skip cocktail hour for snapshots.

Having a receiving line.
Receiving lines might ensure that you give everyone a brief hug, but consider skipping the line and heading straight to the party. That way, you’ll be able to spend actual time with each guest without feeling like you need to keep the line moving. Receiving lines take up a large chunk of time, create congestion in the venue, and don’t allow for much of an interaction.

Having too long of a cocktail hour.
Cocktail hour should only be 45 minutes to an hour–any longer and guests begin to get antsy. You also don’t want them overdoing it on the alcohol before they’ve put anything more substantial than appetizers in their stomachs. This is where a first look comes in handy–if you’re taking photos during cocktail hour, you’re going to feel way too rushed. If you absolutely must take pictures after the ceremony instead, have an early afternoon ceremony and provide guests with a fun list of local attractions or bars they could check out during the break.

Not scheduling the “little things.”
Moments like your first dance with Dad or the toasts may seem like they’ll just spontaneously arise whenever your DJ decides, but not scheduling is a recipe for disaster. Of course, you can give yourself a small cushion on either end so you don’t feel like a stickler, but having a rough idea of when every planned event will go down is essential.

Pantry + Bar Staples for Effortless Last-Minute Entertaining

The key to effortless entertaining is keeping your kitchen stocked with crowd-pleasing items you can store (almost) forever and prepare in two steps or less.

So whether the group text lands on your place for happy hour, or your neighbor drops in to watch Game of Thrones, you’ll look like a domestic goddess (with very little effort).

Tory Williams Photography

Your pantry and bar staples should look like this:

Water + Wine
“Welcome! What can I get you to drink? I have water and (insert drinks options here).”

Hostess tip: Always offer your guests water or non-alcoholic options. They might be parched and could be uncomfortable asking. They also might need to drive home later. As a responsible host, you’d never offer alcohol without also serving water.

You should keep at least two bottles of decent red and white wine at-the-ready. A good price point for house wine is $10-$20. Find bottles with cute labels and use them as décor on your bar cart until you need them!

Chips + Dip
Open salsa; pour in bowl. It doesn’t get any easier.

Impromptu watch parties (and pretty much any group gathering) call for chips and dip. Store extra jars of salsa and bags of tortilla chips in your pantry for this occasion. Really, any jarred dip is a great option and keeps well if it’s unopened.

Up your game with this quick and easy queso recipe: cut Velveeta cheese into cubes, add a few cans of Rotel tomatoes, and microwave until melted (stirring occasionally). This is its own food group in the South. Probably because both ingredients never go bad! Frozen dips like spinach and artichoke are also crowd favorites when you have a few extra minutes to heat in the oven. Store a few bags of pita chips for a warm dip alternative.

Anouschka Rokebrand

Cheese + Crackers
Charcuterie trays are synonymous with girls’ nights. And wine.

They’re super easy to pull together! Stock up on 3-5 cheese options to slice and pair with crackers at a moment’s notice. Mild cheddar, gruyere, brie, pepper jack, and goat cheese are a great starting palate. Cheese keeps for several months, and odds are you’ll use the cracker sleeve before it expires. Place on a fun cheese board for an easy, trendy app that’s sure to please.

Another festive app: pour a jar of pepper jelly over a full block of cream cheese. Pair with crackers and a cheese knife. Guests will love it.

Sweet + Salty
Pour munchies into small bowls for short happy hours or pre-game parties.

When guests will be more focused on drinking than eating, you’ll still want snacks on hand. Place little bowls of popcorn, M&M’s, or snack mix strategically around the room where guests will be sitting or standing. You can’t host a movie – or TV – night without popcorn! So when girlfriends come over to watch the Bachelor, put a few bowls of premade white cheddar popcorn and some wrapped chocolates on the coffee and side tables. The hardest part will be not eating all the bags of munchies you’re storing in your pantry!

Tamara Gruner Photography

Frozen + Baked
Because what’s better than warm cookies, straight out of the oven?

Let’s say your dinner date goes extremely well. You could invite him up for a night cap. Or you could blow his mind with a night cap AND a delicious gourmet dessert! You know what they say about the way to a man’s heart… Stash a few frozen desserts, like lemon bars or berry cheesecake squares (Trader Joe’s has a lot of great options) in the freezer.

You need only to pull them out, plate them, and wait a few minutes for the treats to thaw (aka the amount of time it’ll take him to open the wine). If you have a few minutes to spare before guests arrive, bake cookies. Keep a sleeve of cookie dough in your fridge or freezer – then all you need to do is break (or spoon), bake, and plate! Bonus: your kitchen will smell amazing!

Presentation (and long expiration dates) will take your last-minute plans from “scraped together” to “soiree.” While stocking your kitchen, pick up a few serving pieces for moments like this. A pretty pitcher, water and wine glasses, a cheese board, and an assortment of bowls will be versatile and elevate whatever you put inside.

Everything You Need to Know About Booking Your Wedding Entertainment

One of the most important aspects of your wedding reception is the entertainment – the music sets the tone for dinner, and an unforgettable wedding is one that gets your guests on their feet, dancing the night away. It goes without saying that choosing the right wedding band and/or DJ for your celebration makes all the difference, but it can also be one of the most daunting tasks if you’re not plugged in to the local music scene. That’s why we asked some of our favorite bands to dish on what every Bride and Groom needs to know about booking their wedding entertainment, so this can be one of your favorite parts of the wedding planning process instead of one that feels overwhelming. Hit play, then scroll on to get all the details!

You don’t have to decide on your ceremony or cocktail hour music right away. We find that couples oftentimes get overwhelmed trying to decide on their music preferences or first dance song before they’ve book their band. They’re always relieved to find out that those details can be finalized closer to the big day! – Tori, Bay Kings Band

Go see your band perform live! There’s no better way to choose a band than to hear them live first, that way you’ll know exactly what to expect on your big day. Some bands have regular showcases where you can see them perform before making the decision to book. This also gives you the opportunity to speak with the musicians in person to see how they can help make the planning run smoothly so your wedding day is stress free. Pro tip: Showcases also make for a great date night while wedding planning! – Rachel, Bluewater Kings Band

Everyone has their favorite songs or a style of music they dislike, which is important information for the band to have so they can customize your setlist. But some couples micro-manage what their band should or should not play. Trying to stick to strict instructions can limit the band’s ability to play to the crowd and keep the dance floor full. Sometimes couples realize this midway through the event and wish they had let the band read the crowd or take requests from guests rather than sticking to a strict playlist. – Evan, Royal Dukes Band

Find a band that can play an acoustic set for your ceremony or cocktail hour AND get the party going for the reception! Booking an all-inclusive band means there is less set-up and breakdown required, which helps keep the price down without cutting corners. More importantly, though, instead of wasting time communicating with multiple vendors, you can focus on spending precious time with loved ones. – Thai, Silver Arrow Band

Even if you’ve booked a band, DJ your dinner music! Your band can help you create the DJ playlist, but having the band perform during dinner is too loud and distracting – guests can’t decide whether to sit down to eat or head to the dance floor.  Plus, saving the band set for after dinner means you can keep the party going later! – Kevin, Lucky Devils Band

Bigger is not always better. Some couples are looking to impress their guests, but depending on the size of the venue, the number of guests expected, and the overall style of the event, sometimes a five or six-piece band is all you need. (Don’t get us wrong, a 12-piece band can rock the house, but it may be too loud for an intimate soiree at your parent’s home.) – Curtis, Diamond Empire Band

And finally, a fun tip to keep your guests dancing: 90s music is all the rage! We’re getting more and more requests for 9os throwback songs – N’SYNC, Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls, you name it. It’s really fun music to play and gets the crowd going, so we love this trend! – Adam, Bachelor Boys Band

5 Tips to Kick Those Post-Wedding Blues

The adrenaline high of the wedding is over, and the honeymoon you planned for a year was amazing, but that has also come and gone!  To combat the possible post-wedding blues, try some of these tips!

Rebecca Yale Photography

Plan Something Well in Advance
Part of happiness is just the anticipation and the build up to joy! So once all the excitement of the wedding has calmed down, plan a new adventure! It can be something low-key, and just for the two of you, like a weekend road trip or a concert, or it could be a big family vacation! But make it something a few months down the road so you have time to look forward to it.

Rachel Havel

Establish a Routine
I take such pleasure from establishing a set routine that I get to enjoy doing every week, for me it’s relaxing in a cafe, and your new life as a married couple should be no different! Find something fun you both love to do and do it at the same time, all the time! It’s nice to find a shared activity you both look forward to, like visiting your parents every Sunday or meeting for lunch every Wednesday! Not only does it make you slow down and appreciate the little moments, it makes your new life feel that much more real.

Driven By Decor

De-Clutter Your Life
Honestly, nothing feels better than getting rid of old things you don’t need and don’t use anymore. I know it can be stressful, but ‘out with the old, in with the new’, right? Go through your closet and purge anything you do not completely love or feel represents your best self. What you’re left with is all that you need, trust me! Try to get your partner in on it like a joint project to kick off your newest chapter together!

Weekend Activities
As a couple, it can be tricky to decide what activities happen on the weekend. One person can sometimes overrule the other, even if it doesn’t happen purposefully. To keep things balanced, each of you could write a list of things you want to do and accomplish over the weekend and have it done by Friday night. This way, it clearly depicts what’s getting done from both sides and makes weekends that much more relaxing.

Try Something New
I know I told you to establish a fun routine, but adding in something fresh and exciting each week will keep a little bit of that honeymoon magic alive! Try new recipes, new restaurants, new neighborhoods to explore on the weekends- just try to avoid the mundane. You have plenty of time to turn into an old married couple, spend this time injecting some excitement into your day-to-day!

An English Estate Wedding Anchored In Minimalist Design

I have to admit that once I landed on this bride’s blog, These Four Walls, I spent the better part of a morning perusing her beautifully curated content centered on Scandinavian design. I quickly learned she’s got quite the eye for style and, of course, her wedding day was no exception. Set at the most charming English estate, it’s a celebration anchored in dreamy neutrals with a touch of dusty pink with ultra-romantic blooms designed by Ruby & The Wolf. The bride’s love of minimalism ensured the day struck just the right balance of elegance and simplicity, and we have all the photos straight from the lens of Taylor & Porter.

from the Bride, Abi… We wanted our wedding to be elegant but also relaxed and informal. I’m very drawn to minimalism and pale, muted colors such as white and gray – I run a blog about simple living and Scandinavian-inspired design – so this played a large part in the styling.

The venue was our starting point, and we fell in love with Pynes House, set in the small village of Upton Pyne in Devon, the moment we arrived to view it. So many country houses are dark and cluttered, but Pynes House is flooded with light; it also has 12 bedrooms, which meant we could spend the whole weekend there with close friends and family, and get ready at a leisurely pace on the morning of the wedding. In a strange twist, we have since found out that some of Chris’ ancestors came from Upton Pyne and were married in the village in 1786, so they would have been familiar with the house!

We had no decoration other than lots of flowers and flickering candles, as the venue just didn’t need it. And we didn’t have to think twice about which florist to use – Kirstie of Ruby & The Wolf has been a friend for years, and we love her dramatic yet natural style. She managed to translate our vision to perfection – white and dusty-pink blooms (hellebore, ranunculus, roses, astrantia) and lots of trailing greenery. Our favorite feature was a pair of huge urns spilling with flowers and foliage, which she placed on Perspex plinths in the entrance hall; she also created stunning mantelpiece displays in our ceremony and banquet rooms.

As well as drawing on the setting, we took inspiration from Spain and Italy, where we’ve both spent a lot of time over the years (I used to live in Barcelona, and Chris and I have traveled to Italy together numerous times). We booked a guitar duo to play Spanish music during the ceremony and drinks reception, and our food featured lots of Mediterranean influences; my bouquet also included jasmine, our cake was flavored with orange-blossom water, and Spanish churros were served as a snack on the dance floor.

In addition, I wanted to include influences from my grandmothers, who are sadly no longer with us. I wore my maternal grandmother’s diamond earrings and had a maple-leaf brooch inherited from my Canadian paternal grandmother pinned to my bouquet. My brother, who flew over from Vancouver for the wedding, also gave a surprise native Canadian blessing during the ceremony.

It was Kirstie who first introduced us to Louise from Taylor & Porter, and as soon as we looked through her portfolio we knew we wanted her to photograph our wedding. Her images are beautifully crafted – so graceful and timeless, and infused with natural light. We’re delighted with the results, and they capture the story and feel of the day perfectly.

Our stationery came from the talented Suzanne at The Whistle Press, who created bespoke letterpress designs using calligraphy from Megan Riera. I’d met Megan when I attended one of her calligraphy workshops, so when Chris and I got engaged we commissioned her to create words which we then used across our invitations, menus, table plan and order of events. I hand-wrote matching place cards for the tables.

I was keen for my dress to be light, comfortable and easy to wear; I also wanted a sleek silhouette, with no large skirt or fussy details. Charlie Brear’s ‘Payton’ was perfect, and I had it customized with lace cap sleeves and lace scallop edging. It had a puddle train which was supposed to be buttoned up for dancing, but I was enjoying swishing it around too much so it stayed down (I somehow managed not to trip over it!).

The whole day was magical from start to finish, and I wish we could do it all over again. Highlights included the groomsmen’s speech, which had everyone crying with laughter, and hitting the dance floor at the end of the night (for our first dance we chose ‘At Last’ by Etta James, which seemed appropriate given we’d been together for 14 years before getting engaged!). Another favorite moment for both of us was turning to face the room after saying our vows, and seeing all our friends and family together in one place – truly special.

How to Include Your Future In-Laws in Wedding Planning

Ask anyone who has ever been married. When you say, “I do,” you’re making a commitment to the entire family. When you take their last name, you’re taking on generations of family history, traditions, and occasional drama.

You might be new to the family, but, with a little effort, you might just become their favorite child. (Sorry, babe!)

Graham Terhune Photography

Let’s begin with the proposal…

Express Your Excitement
Start practicing your Oscar speech now. When you announce your engagement to your future in-laws, take a moment to thank (and inspire) them. After all, they’re a big part of why your fiancé turned out so well! Channel all your post-proposal feels into telling them how thrilled you are to join their family. No doubt your enthusiasm will be contagious.

Brancoprata

Introduce Your Parents
Who knows and loves you more than your own parents? Whether it’s at the engagement or right before the wedding, set some time to introduce your parents to your future in-laws in person. They’ll have the opportunity to brag about that time you won the spelling bee in sixth grade, and his parents will get to know you on a deeper level thanks to the people who love you most (other than your fiancé, of course). His parents will also get the chance to share their favorite childhood memories. And all that sharing will strengthen your families’ bond.

To bridge any awkward moments, make a mental list in advance of interesting conversation topics. What do both your parents have in common? What’s your future father-in-law’s favorite thing to talk about? Think of recent vacations, hobbies, sports teams, or charities to bring up if there’s an uncomfortable silence.

Talk to the MoB
Your mom has probably been dreaming of this moment for as long as you have. When you were playing dress-up, she was probably thinking about the day you would pick out your wedding dress together. Talk to her about where and when she’s comfortable including your future mother-in-law. If she’s fine with it, you might want to invite your future-MIL to your final dress fitting. Maybe there are some other wedding planning activities – like the cake tasting or bridal shoe shopping – you could involve both moms.

The mother of the groom will appreciate being included, especially if she doesn’t have any daughters of her own. These memories will be forever special to your relationship.

Ryon:Lockhart Photography
Respect Important Traditions
Religion, culture, and holidays can be extremely important to families. Talk to the groom about which traditions are most important to his parents. Dividing holidays is never easy. But knowing what matters most to his family will help you make the right decision as a couple about where and how you spend your time. His parents will appreciate you making the effort to understand and accommodate their priorities with your own. And at the end of the day, that’s what family is all about.

Send Shower Invitations
Make sure you include your future mother-in-law in any appropriate bridal showers or pre-wedding festivities—your bachelorette and lingerie shower can be no-mom zones! Even if it’s out of state, ask the hostess to send an invitation to both your mother and your future mother-in-law. If she can’t make it, she will appreciate the fact that you wanted her there.

Blue Rose Photography

Give a Thoughtful Wedding Gift
Your wedding day is an incredible opportunity to make your future in-laws feel special. They will cherish a thoughtful gift or a heartfelt note from the day you became their new daughter. Take the time to write them a letter, communicating what you value most about your relationship and what memories you’re looking most forward to making. Cover them in love as you prepare to walk down the aisle to their son.

Your future mother-in-law will appreciate any gift that comes from your heart. It will be an emotional day, so consider an embroidered handkerchief with a bible verse, an inspirational lyric, or a personal note to dry her happy tears. (“Thank you for raising the man of my dreams!”) For an extra personal touch, ask the seamstress to sew fabric left over from your wedding dress alterations into handkerchiefs for your future mother-in-law (also great for your mom and any grandmothers as well). A special charm/bracelet or jewelry to match her dress are also thoughtful wedding day presents.

True, in-laws can be tricky. But the most important thing to any parent is that you love their child. It doesn’t matter if you spend 2 or 200 hours with them between the proposal and the wedding. When they know how much you love their son— and that you want to spend forever by his side—they will welcome you into the family with open arms.

A Destination Wedding With a Backyard Vibe

Sarah Rose wanted an intimate destination wedding since she and her soon-to-be husband both worked for the family catering business, so when she stepped onto the grounds of the Fess Parker Wine Country Inn in Los Olivos, she knew she had found her location. The Inn’s homey atmosphere and green lawn provided that quaint, backyard vibe Sarah Rose had been dreaming of. Kristina Adams photographed the cozy celebration, so scroll on, lovelies, to see it all!

From the Bride… With my husband being born into the Jay’s Catering family, his life has forever revolved around the hospitality industry. With both of us working for Jay’s, we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our marriage than by having a small, quaint destination wedding with our immediate family only. After a day of venue searching and visiting almost every winery in the Santa Barbara area, my mom and I stumbled upon the Fess Parker Inn, Los Olivos. Hungry, tired, and slightly discouraged from not finding my perfect venue, I walked through the lobby of the hotel, saw a simple green garden, and immediately imagined our perfect “backyard” wedding.

My wedding inspiration came after booking our honeymoon to Greece. I felt a Mediterranean garden theme would fit perfectly in the space. I incorporated Mediterranean blues with some pops of lavender. I used local vendors for my wedding such as the lavender and olive oil party favors from Global Gardens down the road from the venue. Our food was also Greek – Petros catered our delicious dinner.

My favorite memory of our wedding was surprising my husband with a cigar/whiskey lounge at the end the night. I am so happy to have found this venue and cannot wait to go back for more celebrations!
