Modern Downtown Dallas Wedding

When I first started peeling back the layers of this Dallas “I do,” one thing became clear: Connie and Tyler aren’t your average bride and groom. Not even close. They’ve got contagious joy and style for days, but they also happen to have the kind of dance moves that would make Justin Timerlake jealous, and we’ve got the video to prove it! Take a peek at their incredible celebration captured by Michelle Boyd and sit tight for their choreographed first dance (and proposal!) coming up next.

From Michelle Boyd PhotographyConnie and Tyler Bates are visionaries. They both live life with a contagious passion that you just can’t help but join in on. I’ve known Connie for a few years, and after seeing their incredible proposal video I knew that their wedding would be EPIC. They didn’t disappoint.

Nestled in the heart of downtown Dallas, TX, the Room on Main was transformed into a space worthy of the production that was to follow. Both Connie and Tyler have invested a large part of their lives into leadership through performance, and their wedding celebration was a perfect reflection of that. Their modern yet bold fashion allowed for their fierceness to shine through, and their hearts for traveling to the nations were manifested in globes and maps all around the room.

In the true Bates way of celebrating, their ceremony and reception was complete with videos and dancing in abundance! Ingredients dance company moved the processional down the aisle and led guests in worship during communion… and fittingly, everything built up to their first dance as husband and wife, complete with amazing choreography and a perfect wardrobe change. With such an incredibly talented group of guests in attendance, it was no wonder that the dance party to follow was a high-energy, amazing experience!

From Ainsley Rose Photography… We loved creating this romantic shoot featuring shades of gold, purple and pink loosely inspired by Scandinavian opulence. To highlight the elegance and modernity of Scandinavian beauty, we opted for a lightly metallic make up look, with softly styled hair. To balance the feminine and glam elements of the shoot, like our stunning Marchesa wedding dress, vintage pink bridesmaid dresses and gold flatware, we chose to shoot in a more rustic, woodland environment. Overall, we loved creating this styled shoot!

Romantic Vineyard Shoot at Justin Vineyards and Winery

I am guilty of some serious day dreaming, but can you really blame me when I spend my days swooning over shoots like this one captured by Allyson Magda? I mean, with floral design by Adornments Flowers & Finery, stationary and calligraphy from Laura Hooper Calligraphy, linens from La Tavola Fine Linen and rentals Casa De Perrin – you simply just can’t help but spend your day drifting off to dreamland with all this pretty dancing in your head.

From Love and SplendorJustin Vineyards and Winery is set in the rolling hills of Paso Robles with multiple venues available for hosting weddings and other special events. For this gorgeous shoot, however, the striking Chateau at the top of their property was selected as our backdrop. As you make your way up the driveway to approach the mansion, you feel as if you’ve been transported to Europe. The ivy-covered walls, the graceful staircase, the classic courtyard and reflecting pool all evoke an enchanted old-world setting. The mansion served as an opulent private estate until recently, and therefore is beautifully maintained both inside and out.

We embraced the classic elegance of the Chateau in designing a shoot that was romantic, feminine, and altogether luxurious. Our palette consisted of creamy ivories and whites, pale pink, and precious metal accents. The tabletop’s foundation was a stunning new fabric from La Tavola Linen featuring a beautifully “in-between” metallic color that is a cross between gold and silver. The subtle texture added a bit of edge and interest to an otherwise traditional look. Casa de Perrin set the table to perfection with gold and blush Florentine chargers, white china and pink glass salad plates, cut crystal glassware and champagne coupes and their extravagant 24-karat gold flatware. Graceful pink goblets added the perfect blush of color and tied in the silk dupioni napkins and florals. Placesettings were graced with lovely gold-foil printed menus from Laura Hooper Calligraphy, sophisticated in their simplicity. A bit of vintage floral trim brought the entire setting together.

Laurel from Adornments Flowers & Finery created refined drama with a tall centerpiece perched on an heirloom vessel in shades of bone and gold. I loved the artistic detail on the vase, from its gilded feet to the filigree designs. Gently curving French tulips and garden roses spilled lavishly over the vase’s bowl, along with loose vines and greenery for a garden-inspired feel. Additional fragrant blooms were placed in small gold julep cups. The movement in the arrangement made the tabletop a bit more accessible, despite all of the luxe details. I think it’s important to set a table that wows a guest but doesn’t alienate them.

Our models were real-life couples dressed in Kirstie Kelly gowns and Express grey suites, respectively. I especially loved the bride’s voluminous skirt and tie-shoulder details. A setting like the Chateau necessitates a glorious couture gown! The bouquets were composed of the same scrumptious garden roses in varying shades of palest pink, peach and buttery yellow. Long trailing ribbons completed the ladylike look.

Allyson Magda captured every detail beautifully! It was such a pleasure working with this team of creatives in reviving a bit of classic romance, and I think we were able to bring a bit of freshness to a traditional look.

From The Bride…Scott and I had both been living in New York City for a number of years but despite having many mutual friends from back in the Midwest had never met. One fateful day we both happened to be at the same bar down on Wall Street for Happy Hour and upon striking up a conversation realized that we both hailed from the Midwest, Chicago and Madison respectively, loved/hated the Bears and loved/hated the Packers and amazingly knew a lot of the same people from the small town where I grew up. The rest really is history as we quickly found despite our intense NFL rivalry we shared a great deal in common and became pretty much inseparable.

Proposal…This past February, in what had been a crazy year of weather in New York following Hurricane Sandy, the city was once again bracing for a big storm, Nemo. It’s pretty miserable getting around the city when a big snow storm hits and near impossible to get a cab but Scott was insistent that we venture out and head to our favorite pizza restaurant at the end of our block for our usualFriday night “date night.” We visited there almost weekly, so I didn’t quite understand the urgency to make it there in the midst of a record setting blizzard but alas I agreed and off we went. Following dinner we walked back out into the blizzard conditions to head home and within feet of the restaurant Scott dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes! And we were even able to get my eventual Maid of Honor and her boyfriend to venture out in the snow for some celebratory drinks!

Wedding…Prior to getting engaged we had decided on Chicago as the location as that’s where I grew up and Scott’s family lives just a short drive away in Madison, Wisconsin. Through family friends we were familiar with Gallery 1028 and after looking at a few other venues decided 1028 was it! We both loved the unique location of being on Goose Island and especially loved the unique aspects of the venue like the wood floor, exposed brick and huge windows. Since we were planning the wedding from half way across the country we decided that a Wedding Planner was a must. After doing some research we found Tiffany at Soirée Weddings & Events and she did a fantastic job bringing our vision to life. Our goal was to have a great day with family and friends and most importantly make sure everyone had fun and we couldn’t have asked for anything more! What a truly special day it was!

From Studio Starling PhotographyLisa chose bright blue for her bridesmaids to wear and the cutest floral robes for them to get ready in. Scott’s love of design showed in his shoes and classic attire for the guys. Everyone got ready at the W Lakeshore and because it was a gorgeous summer day, we walked over to Olive Park for their first look and group photos. Then it was on to Michigan Avenue to have the couple photographed with a beautiful stretch of Chicago architecture. When we arrived at Gallery 1028, we found a space made beautiful by Soirée, flowers by Exquisite Designs, sweeties by Molly’s Cupcakes and music filled the room by High Society Orchestra. It was a fun night full of dance, edibles, cocktails and lots of laughter!

Elegant Autumn Wedding At The Mint Museum Of Art

This wedding actually made me well up a little, lovelies. Not only did Creative Events Studio help put together nuptials full of stunning details like softly hued blooms from New Creations Flower Company and a magnificent cake from Cake Expressions By Lisa, but the journey this couple has taken is humbling and inspiring. The Schultzes captured the day beautifully. See it all here.

From the Bride… I’m a hook, line and sinker when it comes to love. I tear up at every wedding I attend or even just see…Its the hopeless romantic in me. As cliche as it sounds, I feel that everyone deserves to experience a special kind of love at least once in their lives — one that is both ethereal and organic. It’s not forced, it’s just natural and honest. Everyone’s unique love story brings me an immense amount of joy.

My love story began when I was just 16-years-old. The school year had just begun and I was with my friends at lunch when, from the corner of my eye, I noticed an unfamiliar face with black, shaggy hair, sporting a Beatles t-shirt standing by a picnic table nearby. At that moment, my heart spoke to me and insisted he was someone I needed to know. Days later, I ran into a friend of mine who I remembered seeing with the mystery man at lunch. I started describing what he looked like and found out his name was Sean and he had just transferred that year. Sean and I passed one another in the hall and never spoke but always made eye contact. After the year ended I thought about Sean all summer, hoping the following year would be my golden opportunity to officially meet him. When school started back up, I went to my English class and sat down at a desk. Minutes later Sean walked in and took a seat beside me. He turned to me and introduced himself while I barley uttered two words back to him because I was so nervous. As the year went on, I started opening up a little more to Sean. We had inside jokes, shared laughs and paired up for projects. We hung out as friends but anytime we began to get too close, Sean would disappear and stop all communication between us.

After we graduated he moved to Wilmington for college. Time went on and we grew apart. I would visit my friends who attended the same school and at times would see him. I ran into him at a house party once but before I could speak Sean began telling me about some exciting news — he had met a girl. Heartbroken, I promised myself that I would never put myself through that kind of pain again.  Then one night in 2007, I was out at a bar in Charlotte and ran into Sean’s best friend, Andy, who happened to be in town. He pulled me aside and told me he was afraid Sean would end up with this girl that wasn’t right for him. He concluded our conversation saying Sean had admitted  letting me go was one of the biggest mistakes of his life. My heart ached. News of this conversation had gotten back to Sean in less than 24 hours. He knew I knew.

A few months later, I ran into Sean while he was visiting Charlotte and after chatting over cocktails, he told me he was newly single. We parted ways, but Sean made a point to stay in touch with me from that moment on. We talked every night on the phone for hours on end and a couple of months later, he came back to Charlotte for his birthday and we went on our first “real date.” We made it official labor day weekend when I was visiting Sean in Wilmington and in this incredibly emotional juncture, I finally asked “What took you so long?” He told me he had loved me back in high school when he would pass me in the halls before he ever knew my name.

Sean finally decided to move back to Charlotte and after 6 years of clamor and confusion, we were finally a real couple. Sean and I have been in each other’s lives for over a decade. To simply reminisce the days when we were just teenagers and see the tremendous lengths we’ve come over the course of these years is an indescribable journey. I never believed in the design of fate,  but now I live by it.

Colorful Savannah Wedding

On its own, Savannah, Georgia is pretty much the epitome of perfect marrying.  But add to the mix the styling prowess of Morgan Gallo Events, lush florals from Harvey Designs and an entire world of vibrant hues (think pink, yellow and orange) and it becomes the land of, well… everything.  It’s one part rustic, one part whimsical and all parts pretty.  See it captured beautifully by Nate Henderson right here.

From Nate Henderson Photography… Kara and Brian chose historic Savannah, Georgia for their destination wedding. The ceremony took place in the traditional courtyard of the Ships of the Sea Museum, while their reception was held at the museum’s newly constructed pavilion.

The bride was involved on many details of the wedding, including custom designing and printing the textiles used at the wedding. The florals by Harvey Designs were overflowing with a bright spring look. Southern food served family style was prepared by Chef Nick Mueller. It was all quite awesome!

From The Bride… We wanted to have a beautiful, simple day that really highlights how much we appreciate our friends and family. As much as this day is about celebrating our relationship, we also want it to be a celebration and thanks to our friends and family. My brother married us and one of Brian’s friends played guitar for the ceremony. We really wanted to have the ceremony be an inclusive celebration.

Rustic Fall Wedding

I’m a complete sucker for rustic romance, so give me a day filled with burlap, mason jars and golden apples (yes, golden apples) and you’ll see one very, very happy lady.  Then set all of those awesome details up against a crazy cool barn setting and throw in a bride and groom who are the epitome of adorable and it basically can’t be beat.  See every moment captured by Leah Haydock in the full gallery.

And a little extra special treat… the gorgeous film from the always amazing Long Haul Films.  Enjoy, lovelies.

From The Bride… Mike and I met while living in Boston after college. Mike won me over with his playfulness and charm. He would do little things like bring me coffee when I was studying or leave flowers on the windshield of my car. He is quite the charmer and continues to do these little things to show me he cares every day! We have been together for four years now, and were married on September 13th at the Red Lion Inn in Cohasset. I’m one lucky gal.

I have always been a romantic. I love anything and everything soft, pretty and chic. I also love that rustic feel, so when I saw the Red Lion Inn barn with all the wooden beams and floors, I could imagine the candles glowing and people dancing and it made me get all warm and fuzzy inside. We incorporated apples throughout the wedding, with apple cake pop favors and spray painted sparkly apples, because we got engaged on an apple orchard last October. I love the look of chalkboards, so we used a lot of chalkboard signs throughout the wedding which my sister designed. One of the best parts of my day was walking into the barn and seeing it all come together. You have this vision in your head of what it will be like, and to be honest, it was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. It was the best day ever!

It’s hard to decide on a favorite moment from the day. From getting ready with my girls, to our First Look, to riding on the trolley with our wedding party, it was all so fun! I would have to say, though, I think being pronounced husband and wife and looking out into the crowd of all of our friends and family cheering for us, was a moment I will always remember. We had an “Unplugged Ceremony” where we encouraged our guests not to use their phones or cameras to take pictures, so when we looked out into the crowd we saw everyone smiling back at us – it was truly awesome.

I can confidently say that we had the best combination of vendors. Everything about the day went smoothly and I never felt like I was stopping to answer questions or tell people where to go. Everyone we worked with was so professional and had one common goal: to make us happy. Our photographer, Leah Haydock, was amazing and had a huge part in making the day go smoothly. Her photos are absolutely beautiful and I am already trying to come up with reasons to have her photograph us again! Our videographers, Long Haul Films, just won “Best of Boston,” and rightfully so. They are so good at being there without you even knowing it and we can hardly wait to see our wedding film! Our band, Groove Authority, kept the dance party going all night long. Literally, people did not even want to sit down and eat their dinner because they just wanted to dance! Our flowers from Les Fleurs in Andover were gorgeous and Kerianne was so wonderful to work with! Jen Tawa Hair Design and Dani Wagener Makeup were both such a pleasure to work with and made myself and all of my bridesmaids feel beautiful! I feel like we had a wedding day dream team!

If I had one piece of advice to give future brides, it would be to make sure to stop and take it all in. All of the prepping, planning, shopping… everything you have done to make this day happen has come together and it is so awesome to see. Make sure you stop to take in all the details. Make sure you stop to take in all the little moments with your husband. Most importantly, make sure you stop to take in that beautiful space, whether it be a barn, a ballroom, a tent or a backyard and soak in that feeling that all of the people you love are in that one place at the same time, and they are there for you! It is a feeling like no other.

Romantic Paris Wedding at Four Seasons George V

Ah, Paris, I love you. Of all the destinations, sweet Paris radiates elegance like no other. Effortlessly, too. And my proof is in Ethan Yang‘s breathtaking imagery today. Paired with a stunning Bride donning an Inbal Dror dress, I can’t help but be mesmerized by every single shot. See them all in the gallery.

From the beautiful Bride… Paris – It was certainly a dream come true. Shortly after we got engaged and about a year leading up to our special day, I had countless variations of where and how our wedding would turn out to be. The common theme amongst my many visions was that this wedding, wherever it ended up being, was inevitably destined to be intimate and elegant.

By channeling our passion for fashion, the arts and beautiful architecture, Paris was simply the perfect choice. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate opportunity to celebrate our unity by planning a hopelessly romantic wedding and an once-in-a-lifetime trip for all of our friends, family and most importantly, for each other.

Now that once the destination was decided, we had a couple of options: a chateau wedding? A wedding in a hotel? We wanted to make traveling for guests as easy as possible without having to rent a car or traveling more, so we decided on a hotel. My vision was romantic yet elegant. After contemplating on many inspiration boards and color themes, I decided on blush, crème and champagne as I thought it would best fit the Four Seasons George V for our wedding. I wanted to incorporate similar colors to the rich, romantic feel of Parisian arts and décor and thought those colors would best compliment because they were subtle yet sophisticated.

Planning a wedding from abroad in a country that I was unfamiliar with; with the language barrier, different time zones and working fulltime (right, ladies?) made this an experience of a lifetime. Every moment, beginning from the day we started planning up until the very last minute of the wedding night was truly a memorable one.

After the ceremony, as we were taking pictures, we were greeted by waving, applauding pedestrians. The genuine smiles from the strangers helped us express the love we had on this fantasy day in Paris. The wedding day was more beautiful than anything I could have ever dreamt of – from the gorgeous weather to the view of the Eiffel Tower from our hotel suite, the intimate group of our family and friends were the perfect people to share the momentous day with. On a warm, spring night, the romantic sophistication of Paris swept through the air and our wonderful photographers – Ethan and Karis, did an amazing job capturing this special day that will allow us to reminiscence in true color for the rest of our lives.

Believe it or not, After only a couple weeks of dating, Jun bought me a Jimmy Choo Passport Cover for Valentine’s Day and wrote, “So we can travel in style together.” Little did we know that would come true. In fact, the passport cover was the same material and exact design line as my reception shoes, unintentionally! That there told me it was meant to be. The first gift I had ever received from Jun became an essential to our wedding and we sure did “travel in style.” Escaping to Paris was the perfect solution to being truly relaxed and having fun, while still having a stylish wedding.

We wanted to incorporate the elegance of the Four Seasons and the delicacy of the French language to the décor as much as possible. Since our intimate wedding required four guest tables, it was the perfect idea to name the guest tables after each season in French. This enabled us to thematically decorate each of the four guest tables’ flowers by the color and tone of each season. So fitting yet, so unique as we found the words “printemps, été, automne, and hiver” absolutely beautiful and motivational to use for our décor.

Our escort cards – I wanted these to be particularly unique since there are so many variations of escort cards. I wanted them to be special and something that would set the theme for the wedding and would stand out. I thought, why not feathers since I incorporated them into our wedding invitations?

The only thing that was DIY was those feathers, feathers, feathers. I went to numerous craft stores in the city to look for the PERFECT feathers. Now many know, feathers do not come in perfect condition; flimsy at best. I finally made it to a craft store that most students from Parsons and FIT go to to get their fabric and found just the right amount of white feathers and bought their whole stock. Most, if not all, were in horrible condition which I knew would be a huge project.

First, I had to cut out “sample” escort name cards to see how it’d fit and how much I had to cut from the stem. After testing and wasting many, I trimmed the sides of every feather and made it primp and proper. Second, I used a flat iron and curling iron to fix the ends and hair sprayed each one so they would stay in tact. I was worried how “in tact” they would be during the travel and making it to Paris. That was something I’d worry about later. Third, had to go back and trim each one to make each look as similar as possible – from the length to the dimensions of the feathers as they would be standing up. Fourth, I Inserted them into thick books to flatten and straighten the strands out more. Waited a few more hours and Voila! Perfection. Fifth, I gave my MOH dimensions of the escort cards that I would want cut out so she could type in each guest’s name. We picked the perfect font to match the feathers and my theme, and I printed them on card stock and cut them to stick onto the stems of the feathers. We found a styrofoam box at our florist’s and spray painted it glitter gold and made it a base for the feathers to stand on. The amount of feather hair and dust we ate from these, I cannot tell you. We looked like a sweatshop spread out with different sections of each feather. All in all, it took 5hrs to finish and I could not tell you how proud I was in making my perfect, yet unique escort cards that guests would remember. If I had to do it all over again, I would.

From Hey Gorgeous EventsKatie and Bryan were married on New Year’s Eve at the Contemporary Art’s Center in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio (their beautiful engagement session was actually featured on Style Me Pretty that same day about an hour before Katie walked down the aisle!) Dear friends and family travelled from near and far not only to ring in a new year but to love on the sweet couple as they started a new chapter in their love story. Aside from the gorgeous bride and the handsome groom, the event had so many details tied in with the bride’s love for blush, peach, mint and gold. The big overhead ceremony aisle canopy made completely out of ribbon, lush blush, peach and white florals in gold vessels, sequin linens that sparkled when the light hit at the right time, a massive dance floor ceiling treatment that set the tone for the reception party; this wedding really had it all and more.

Yet right before I sent up the signal to the bridal party to let them know the processional was about to start, we got some bad news. Katie had lost her engagement ring. As the string quartet played, the guests eagerly anticipated the bride’s big reveal, and poor Bryan stood at the alter confused and wondering what was going on (sorry Bryan!), Katie and her girls were scrambling around trying to find her ring at what probably was the worst time to be doing so. I met her halfway up to the bridal suite to get things back on track and told her all that mattered in that moment was the kind groom waiting for her at the alter. And that we would find the ring no matter what. Her Dad held her hand, she shook her head, wiped away a few tears and together they trekked down the thirty plus stairs to the 250 awaiting guests. The ceremony began at long last and the show went on.

Immediately after I sent Katie off down the aisle, we got the news that the ring had been found; by a very gracious janitorial employee who had discovered the ring sitting in the corner of the venue restroom! From there the ring went from the hands of the employee to my husband, to a guest, to the videographer, to the photographer, to the best man, to the groom and finally back into the hands of our sweet bride. Katie was reunited with her most special piece of jewelry at the exact moment when it came time to exchange the rings. Bryan was a little confused as to we he was handed three rings instead of the two he was expecting but Katie burst into happy tears at the sight of thought to be long lost possession. There would continue to be many more moments of happy tears and sheer joy that day, all of which shined brighter than any diamond ring.

When it came close to midnight everyone stood on the dance floor and counted down to the start of 2014 via the large screen which was live streaming the Times Square coverage. At midnight a confetti canon erupted sprinkling colored bits over all of the happy guests embracing their loved ones as Auld Lang Syne began to softly play. It was beyond a pleasure being a small sliver of the Sapp’s happily ever after, and an honor to work with such a talented team who made it all possible.

Simple & Sweet Lyndoch Hill Engagement

You know what’s a total no-brainer?  Having your talented sister (Lucinda May Photography) capture your engagement session.  Because sisterly love + you and yours frolicking around the stunning fields of Lyndoch Hill is a recipe for some seriously gorgeous photos.  Think light-filled images and a Bella In Bloom bouquet that is all sorts of awesome.  See it all right here.

From Lucinda May Photography… This engagement session was a very special one for me as Millie is my sister and best friend. I remember quite some time ago shopping with her and she just had to show me this beautiful engagement ring she loved and on her 21st birthday last year she received that exact ring from Nathan. He surprised her with hiding presents all over their house with the last one being her gorgeous ring.  He got down on one knee and proposed which of course she said yes! Ever since then, they have been searching for the perfect location to get married and they both fell in love with Lyndoch Hill. Lyndoch Hill has so many gorgeous locations for photos, so we decided to do their engagement session there. We had Amy from Bella In Bloom make a lovely soft pink bouquet for the session which complimented the images perfectly. We wanted the images to be light and soft which showed the love that Nathan and Milles have for each other.

Colorful Lace-Detailed Vintage Garden Wedding

If I had to pick a top ten for fave wedding details, lace would most definitely make the cut. From classic affairs to vintage soirees, it’s a romantic touch that works across the board. And this beauty from Closer To Love Photography, is adorned in head to toe with the loveliest of lace detailing. From the Bride’s stunning dress and the DIY doily candles to the lace-edged invites and cake dressed in sugary lace. It’s all so swoon-worthy and it’s sitting pretty right here.

From Closer To Love Photography… Today we are sending over a beautifully quaint, romantic, and vintage-inspired SoCal Wedding that we had the honor of photographing at the Twin Oaks House and Garden Estate recently. The bride and groom’s hearts are beautiful, and that beauty radiated throughout their entire Wedding Day. From their emotional vows made to one another, to the warm support of close family and friends, Sasha and Jason’s Big Day was simply perfect. Accompanied by vibrant and colorful floral displays, and unique vintage decor throughout, we believe that you will fall in love with this timeless Wedding as much as we have! We will allow Sasha to describe the inspiration behind her Wedding Day…

From the beautiful Bride… The inspiration behind our Wedding Day first stemmed from my love of Stars Hollow, the fictional small town in the TV show “Gilmore Girls.” I wanted something with a quaint, homey feel that was more reminiscent of the northeast rather than southern CA—gardens, trees, and flowers rather than beaches and Spanish architecture. I wanted a romantic garden fairytale full of twinkle lights. I combined the garden small town idea with my love of 40s music to come up with a vintage garden wedding. I saw an idea for candleholders made of lace doilies on Pinterest and my theme of lace and doilies was born. Most of my ideas came from wedding magazines (which is how we found the venue), Pinterest, and Etsy along with suggestions from my coordinator.

From The Bride…I feel that Anthony and I are the epitome of ‘what’s meant to be will be’, and that theme shined through on our wedding day. We fell in love with our gorgeous beachfront venue, so we decided to take on the challenge of planning our wedding in just four months in order to secure our dream location. With the help of the amazing team at Before I Do Events and all of our incredible vendors, it proved to be no challenge at all, and everything easily fell into place just perfectly as it was meant to be, for the big day.

We wanted our wedding to be classic with romantic hints of vintage, and Parisian-inspired touches throughout. Most of all, we wanted the wedding to be ‘us’. From the wood planks that lined the aisle with the things we love about each other (how Anthony proposed), to our personally written vows, to our family-style dinner from one of our favorite restaurants, to our basketball themed grand entrance (yes, my husband dunked in his tux), to our delicious dessert bar – it was a night centered around everything we love, including each other and our dearest friends and family.

Love and genuineness filled the room, and we had a blast dancing the night away. We also made it a point to take some time out together to take it all in, which was great since time flew by. After the party ended and Anthony and I got back to our hotel, and we did an impromptu photo shoot on the beach, and we then found ourselves playing ping pong in our wedding clothes (then maybe or maybe not headed to Jack in the Box). It was the best, most perfect night because it was just so ‘US’.

Los Angeles Home Tour

My boyfriend and I have hunkered down and seriously started saving for our first home which means that my love for home tours is currently in overdrive. And if I had my choice, we’d stop our search at this very second and move right in to this LA abode. With photos from Christine Choi Photography, let’s take a closer look.

From the home owner… We purchased our first home a little over a year ago and we’ve done quite a bit to it in a short time. While it’s not very big we figured there is no reason why it can’t be well decorated and a reflection of our styles. In it’s original state it needed an overhaul which included, all new hardwood flooring, kitchen remodel, new fireplace and built-ins. We had one month after purchase to complete the renovations, so decisions had to be made in a hurry. My Pinterest addiction had hit an all-time high! We ended up choosing dark hardwood floors for a dramatic effect and to balance the lighter walls, cabinets, and decor. I had to restrain myself from painting the entire interior white and ended up choosing Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Grey and White Dove for the trim for all but the nursery. We’ve added paintings, lighting, bookcases, and accent pieces since the initial renovation to our first home truly ours.

Our kitchen area leads to the living room in an open, great room design. It is not only a focal point in our home but also is our main eating area so we knew it needed to be something we would absolutely love! The Carrera Marble countertops and island are something we just had to have it is one of our favorite features of the kitchen. We think the Brass Hick’s pendants were a nice addition to room to add something a little unexpected. They also inspired us to mix metals throughout the home. The kitchen side of the great room opens up to our back yard through two large French doors. This creates a great setting for entertaining and al fresco dining.

Our living room is where we spend most of our time so we it needed to be comfortable, yet stylish. We wanted to have plenty of space to lounge so opted for this Restoration Hardware sectional accented with Moroccan wedding pillows (I knew I wanted to incorporate somewhere in my home) and Moroccan shag rug. I love mixing in budget friendly items like this ottoman from Overstock.com.

The entry way isn’t very large, but it is kind of on its own so we thought it would be a place to have a little fun with pops of color. While it’s always a challenge for us to commit to any art pieces, or anything on the walls for that matter, we think the painting selected here is perfect with it’s mixture of gold and color. It creates and inviting and curious start to our home tour.

The master bedroom we wanted to keep light and airy. We love a lot of white complemented with beige & grey tones. The mirrored dresser and silver lamps also help maximize the rooms natural light. It’s definitely the most relaxing, calming room in the house which was our goal!

In my mind a guest room is a perfect place to experiment. Here we decided to mix a bit of everything from monochromatic and floral prints to modern lamps, retro sunburst mirror, and lastly we added a vintage globe and dresser. The combination of eras and styles is a bit free-form, but it brings just the creative divergence the house needs.

The nursery I wanted to be soft, cool and calming, but with a bit of an edge. We combined some pieces that can transition into a little boys room, while still being a beautiful nursery for our little man. I love mixing the black and white rug and blanket with the sweet mobile and animal prints. Slight bits of gold hardware add complexity and reminds of metals pieces throughout the house. The room is surprisingly relaxing to rock our baby boy to sleep.

Blush Twin Oaks Garden Estate Wedding

When it comes right down to it, blush tones always steal my heart. But this lovely garden soiree from Heidi-o-photo? The blush palette stands for sooo much more. From the bridesmaids dresses and the Bride’s brother donning a pink suit to the florals and linens, blush was a symbol of strength and hope for this Groom and his beautiful Bride, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer twice in the last two years. Not only is this garden soiree romantic-as-ever, but it shines with the most beautiful love.

From the beautiful Bride… Trevor and I first met when I was on vacation in Laguna Beach, California in March of 2009. Right away, I could tell he was sincere, and I knew he was an overall “good guy”. We hit it off from the first minute we met. I flew back to Austin, Texas with stars of hope in my eyes. We kept in contact and took turns traveling to see one another in a whirlwind romance. Five months later, I trusted my instincts and moved to southern California to be with him. Five years later, here we are happily married!

After getting engaged in April of 2012, I researched several different venues near and far that would best represent our partnership. We both enjoy being outdoors and our favorite seasons are spring and summer. I have always dreamed of getting married in an intimate garden filled with beautiful flowers. After being engaged for 2 months we stumbled upon Twin Oaks Garden Estate, and our springtime wedding was officially in the works. Both of our lucky numbers is 4, so it was a complete coincidence that the ONLY available date that fit both of our schedules was April 4, 2014. We both agreed it was meant to be!

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect wedding. It was definitely a family affair! Many amazing details of the wedding were made possible by our family members. My talented mother created all the centerpieces and floral. My creative father is responsible for building some of the props, including our own customized corn-hole game. My brother helped assemble each centerpiece and was there for support in any way possible for my parents and me of course! Together, they created a magical scene! Yes, they drove an 18-foot trailer from San Marcos, Texas carrying most of the décor and supplies, not to mention the beautiful cake that was made by Simon Lee Bakery (The cake was still fresh and AMAZING…thanks to a special cooler made by my dad.).

Trevor’s charismatic uncle was our officiant and added some much needed comic relief when our nerves set in. He is the brother of Trevor’s late father, who passed when Trevor was a toddler. Having him take part in our special day meant the world to both of his family and us.

As for the details, my favorite was definitely the “memory table” in which we displayed wedding photos of our parents and grandparents. Some are no longer with us, but they all hold a very special place in our hearts. Our cake topper is another sentimental detail. It has been in my family for about 100 years and will continue to be passed down to future generations. Most of all, we enjoyed celebrating and sharing our special day with our closest friends and family.

We chose the main color to be blush as it holds a very special meaning to the both of us. In March 2012, and again in February 2014, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. From the blush roses, to blush peonies, to the blush bridesmaid dresses. My brother even wore a custom made Gatsby-inspired pink suit in honor of my fight. For Trevor and I, this wedding was a symbol of strength, hope, and lifetime of good health for our wonderful families and dear friends.

Modern Beach House Wedding Inspiration

Backyard weddings are one of our favorite genres. They’re personalized and cozy and dripping in laid back elegance. And if that backyard happens to be mere feet from the ocean, consider it a whole new level of awesome. This photo shoot is oceanfront beauty paired with chic modern details and the idea of a casual beach house get together. Conceptualized and crafted by Lavender & TwineCassidy Rae Events and These Bud’s A Blooming, these images will have you rethinking that backyard affair and maybe moving it seaside.

From Lavender & TwineThe inspiration for this modern and romantic shoot was sparked by an incredible tiled wall–a wall accenting a one of a kind modern beach house. We wanted to help couples think outside of the box, and inspire a fresh take on a modern beach wedding. With a mixed palette of neutrals, greens, and whites with pops of oranges and gold, this is the perfect combination for a modern yet elegant wedding.

The stunning floral arrangements were provided by These Buds A Blooming. Allie put something together more gorgeous than I ever imagined. I mean, did you see that bouquet?! The soft textures in the arrangements combined with the edginess of the succulents and pops of color are a perfect fit with this modern vibe.

Incredible linens were provided by La Tavola. The textured grey linen cloth was the perfect anchor for the table design with dishware provided by Town and Country Rentals. The modern print napkins added a little something extra special. The custom silverware gave the perfect balance of modern elegance.

The cake was provided by The Sugar Lab with a last minute placement of an air-plant as the cake topper. It was the perfect finish to the intentional imbalance of the cake. The use of geometric shapes and blocks made this cake truly something special.

Our gorgeous bride looked amazing in a Paolo Sebastian gown that continued the grey palette through the wardrobe. Crystal Robinson Makeup did an amazing job styling the already stunning brides hair and makeup.

Behind the Blog: Lean + Meadow

The very best part of this blog thing is the chance to get lost in a virtual world of lovely. And I’m here to introduce to you a brand new favourite: Lean + Meadow.  She simply must be on your radar. An incredible writer, a beautiful soul, and the entire experience feels like sipping a warm cup of tea. With photos from Amanda Lenhardt, we’re going behind the blog.

SMP: Tell us a little about lean + meadow!
lean + meadow is a food and travel photography journal. It is a place for me to share captured moments from my most two favourite things – slow, seasonal, sustainable food and all over the place, back street, intrepid travel. Every week I’ll post a new recipe and travel adventure and often day to day moments sneak in there too. I have also recently began an exciting little project called Creative Humans USA, an interview and photography series of selected creative folk who I am lucky enough to meet on my travels around the states. So together, it is a real natural compilation of my daily inspirations. Admittedly, it is my current love affair…

SMP: What made you decide to start a blog?
I didn’t set out to be a photographer, let alone a blogger. I was previously a performing arts teacher. I had no idea what the alternative would be, but I did know that I couldn’t keep teaching. I didn’t enjoy my work, and for me that was enough to stop. I knew very little about the blogging world. When we moved over to the USA and I stumbled across the possibility of sharing my photographs, travel and food stories on an online journal, I became quite excited. It seemed to be the perfect way to combine my creative interests of photography, cooking and writing into one neat little expressive ball, all the while documenting our time living overseas. It made me incredibly happy, so I ran with it. I’ve not once looked back.

SMP: What’s one thing you’ve learnt along the way?
I am a perfectionist. So, it has been a valuable lesson for me to be forgiving towards my personal judgements and to encourage myself to post photos, even if I am not 100% happy with them. After all, it’s a journal – it is a wonderful place to look back on and see growth.

SMP: If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
I would have started sooner.

SMP: Stranded on a dessert island question: what’s one cocktail you’d bring with you!
I adore gin and egg white. So, a gin fizz please. Made with fresh lemon and Ransom Old Tom Gin, my recent favourite.

SMP: A single quote that best describes your creative process?
‘She’ll be right love.’ – Something I grew up hearing daily from my Dad. The most lovely Australian man, who always encouraged me creatively and who taught me to see things in a positive light. With Dad, everything always worked out for the best. I like to think of this as I create and generally in my day to day life.

SMP: Your secret to success?
To keep moving. It’s important for me to never allow my abilities or daily life to become stagnant. I love to learn and I love to explore. This keeps me inspired and drives my being. There is just too much to seek and so much to be explored to become too comfortable with life.

SMP: Your most prized possession?
My Dad’s guitar.

SMP: One thing you simply can’t live without?
Travel.

SMP: Three things every stylish homeowner should have?
Natural light, a gas hob and a veggie garden.

SMP: Your favourite online design resource?
Oh, it’s too hard to choose a favourite, I have so many! Can I name a few? Kinfolk, Freunde Von Freunden, The Design Files and Miss Moss.

Colorful Tulip Field Engagement

If tulips make you happy like they make me happy (that’s a lot of happiness), then this sweet engagement session is totally going to make your Monday morning.  It’s the breathtaking tulip fields of Washington meets a crazy cute duo meets the fabulous images of Alexandra Knight Photography and, well… that makes for one pretty amazing way to start the work week.  See every beautiful moment in the full gallery.

From Alexandra Knight Photography… This colorful spring engagement session at the tulip fields in Washington’s Skagit Valley was perfect! Thunderstorms threatened the entire day, but when it came time to shoot, the sun came out and was a gorgeous contrast against the rain clouds that pushed off into the distance. What an awesome backdrop!

Missy and Chris are such a sweet pair and this session was a great chance for their quiet, but loving personalities to come out. Missy wore an adorable dress from Nordstrom and switched out her planned shoes for rain boots since we’d be traipsing around in the mud. We shot at the Roozengaarde Tulip Fields in Mount Vernon, WA on the last weekend of the annual Tulip Festival and were the last group to leave the venue that evening! We were treated to a beautiful, warm sunset and fields still in beautiful bloom.

This session was photographed entirely on film and Missy and Chris’ upcoming wedding in July is sure to be a stunner!

Romantic Engagement Session at Scarborough Bluffs

I am obsessed with each and every image captured by ARTIESE of this couples’ engagement session. Seriously. Each and every image. This gorgeous couple now has a collection of images so stunning they probably want to frame them all, and one that we can swoon over for as long as we’d like right here

From the Bride…My love story with Gabe started later than it should have. My BFF met Gabe in 2007 and announced to me she had found the man of my dreams. Unfortunately, she is a terrible salesperson and although she was quite persistent over the years, her attempts were wildly unsuccessful. Eventually, I found Gabe sitting in my very own living room – she invited him over for a friend’s birthday party. After meeting Gabe that evening, I reluctantly admitted to my BFF that she had been right all along. Maybe it was his big hearty laugh or his silly hat, but somehow I could see myself being really happy with him.

After a few months of BBMing and group outings, Gabe asked me to have dinner one evening. To be honest, I wasn’t even aware that it would be a date for just the two of us! Our first date lasted for 6 hours (good sign!) and at the end of it, Gabe put out THE QUESTION: “where is this going?” Obviously I was completely taken aback since this was only our FIRST date (crazy man!). In between giggling and hiding my face in my scarf, we eventually both agreed that we wanted a relationship that was lasting, serious and godly, with marriage in mind.

As our relationship progressed, so did our adventures. We both loved travelling and eating (Gabe more so than me). We had a great time exploring new lands, but we also had a hard time learning about each others differences. I learnt that Gabe is resistant to sleep, food, and warmth deprivation. Gabe learnt that Cari is a normal human being who always ends up sick and exhausted after a Gabe “vacation”. I learnt that Gabe is a simple man, with simple needs (ie: beer, fried chicken, and basketball). Gabe learnt a lot about cameras, and designer bags/shoes.

But it was Gabe’s differences that I learned to love and appreciate the most. Where I am weak, he is strong. I love how Gabe is so confident and calm about everything he does…including choosing me. Right from the get go Gabe has worn his heart on his sleeve for me and has had unwavering confidence in me. I’ve always been more cautious and anxious than I need to be, but Gabe’s complete openness and honesty always set me at ease. No matter what crazy (and sometimes mean) things I do or tell him, his love for me has never wavered.

Exactly 2 years after our first date, Gabe proposed to me at Evergreen Brickworks. This was Plan B. He accidentally leaked his Plan A to me months ago and I called him out on it. He was devastated, but not defeated. Well actually, I also had an inkling about Plan B, but this time I decided to be kinder and turned a blind eye. Gabe is the worst at keeping surprises (or anything) from me! Obviously I still said “YES!” (how can you resist that face?) and here we are now…getting ready to embark on our greatest adventure yet!

Romantic Ballroom Wedding

Think of this gorgeous Chicago wedding as our Monday morning gift to you.  It’s Old World romance meets traditional pretty in a breathtaking backdrop known as the Chicago Cultural Center and it’s pretty much the perfect way to jump start a work week.  Think one seriously darling duo and a gallery of amazing captured by Gerber + Scarpelli Wedding Photography.  See it all here

From The Bride… Following the theme of our wedding—an old world love story—our first quest was to find the perfect venue. Although we both grew up on farms in rural northwest Illinois, Chicago has always been romantic to us as the place where we first began our lives together and purchased our first home. When we entered the Chicago Cultural Center’s Preston Bradley Hall, it took our breath away with its giant glass dome (the largest Tiffany dome in the world), multicolored mosaics, sprawling marble, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Millennium Park. It had the iconic Chicago landmark feel we sought as almost all of our wedding guests would be traveling into the city for our wedding, and the icing on the cake was its history. It was the original Chicago Public Library. We truly would be married in the place that housed all of the great love stories.

A huge thank you goes to Maggie Thalheimer of Gerber + Scarpelli Photography. She captured the “old world Chicago” feel in our engagement pictures with classic black and white pictures of us and the skyline that we incorporated into our save the dates, our wedsite shaped as a book, and day of. We had a blast with her and Tim Jaroz throughout the wedding.

Fashion was my next priority. I wanted a dress that combined the soft, romantic feel for the day and that was grand enough for the ballroom—enter Vera Wang’s Hayley. Matching the organza petals on my dress, the bridesmaids and groomsmaids wore black organza one-strap sweetheart floor-length Lazaro Noir dresses. My maid of honor wore a similar black organza strapless Lazaro Noir gown with a sash. The groom and groomsmen sported BLACK by Vera Wang tuxes in classic black and white.

We next focused on selecting a florist to enhance our venue and bring our romantic vision to life. For our June wedding, I envisioned soft ivories, golds, and blush pink with petals, petals, and more petals to match my dress. Specifically, I was smitten with pink peonies and also wanted to incorporate white hydrangea and white roses, which was the first flower my husband had ever given me. Anthony Gowder Designs, with special thanks to Suzanne Read, nailed it perfectly. I almost cried when they delivered my bouquet—it was such a beautiful combination of the three flowers, and she even left a spot on the stem to attach my grandmother’s brooch after learning she had passed away earlier in the week so I could keep a piece of her with me throughout the day. The groom’s boutonniere featured the white roses and a sprig of hydrangea to set his apart from the rest. The bridesmaids carried pink peonies and the groomsmen wore white roses wrapped in black silk. Our aisle featured uplit columns lined the aisle alternating elevated floral arrangements and candelabras, and our monogrammed aisle runner was lined with blush pink rose petals up to the altar. Vintage book page petal cones were provided to guests for the petal toss. The true showpiece of the day was our cake table. A waterfall of flowers descended the cake and culminated at the bottom of our elevated glass cake table.

We prepped for the day in our suite at the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile, which was more than accommodating.

Our hometown pastor, John Sgro, officiated the ceremony. I walked in to the Sound of Music wedding processional, and we walked out to “Everything” by Michael Buble for our recessional. Our mutual friend who originally set us up on a blind date eight years ago provided the readings, including “I Do” by Carrie Bradshaw. Our fathers provided the “Blessing of the Hands” before we exchanged rings, which brought us both to tears. Despite the 300 other people in the room, it truly seemed as though it was just us—a moment in time that we will always treasure.

Debra Nauman of Simply Elegant Catering, made sure no guest left hungry. Our cocktail hour was a bustle of passed hors d’oeuvres, including our favorite tomato basil soup shooters with triangle grilled cheese sandwiches. One of our highlights of the day was when she pulled my husband and I aside after the ceremony into a private room to give us a chance to have our first glass of champagne and savor the appetizers. We’re so grateful she did because we didn’t have a moment available after that! Simply Elegant also featured a delicious pink lemonade martini signature drink with a sugar rim and lemon peel, which we named the Mr. & Mrs. Sturtevant-tini. We honed in on offering a “taste of Chicago” to our guests, providing Goose Island 312 beer from the bar and a local favorites late-night snack of Chicago-style hot dogs, sliders, and French fries.

Cake Chicago provided our delicious five-tier cake with two flavor options: White buttermilk cake with raspberry and lemon cream filling frosted with Italian buttercream and chocolate fudge cake with salted caramel and creme brulee filling frosted with Italian buttercream. Simply Elegant then provided an ice cream sundae bar to serve with the cake.

Our paper goods by Holly at Pink {Paper + Ink} helped make the “love story” theme come to life. We named the tables after books and movies that were meaningful to us as couple, and incorporated our favorite love quotes on the place cards and table numbers. Holly even made “And they lived happily ever after” signs for some fun group shots.

Loudbyte Cinematography captured our day on film. They gave our reception a fun twist—after our bridal party was announced, the DJ asked all of the guests to gather for a special presentation during which our love story short film premiered. It shared how we met and our future plans. At the conclusion, he then welcomed us into the ballroom for the grand introduction. We felt so much love from everyone walking into that room!

Our DJ, Tom from Spinnin’ Discs, was such a joy to work with and kept the dance floor packed all night long.

We capped off the night with a private last dance to “The Way You Look Tonight” while our guests prepared for the “let love shine” midnight sendoff on the steps. As we ran out, I will never forget the look on my groom’s face as he saw my surprise wedding gift to him—a vintage getaway car. We spent the next hour cruising up and down Lakeshore Drive with the windows down, sipping champagne, listening to country music, and trying to soak in every moment and memory.

It was the most magical day.
