Pastel Infused Winery Wedding in Sonoma

Give Esla Events a pastel color palette and she’ll rock out one heck of an affair. But this Sonoma shindig goes far beyond the beautiful details and floral finery by Poppystone. It’s got a whole lot of heart and a coming together of culture and family that only Em The Gem could capture so beautifully. See this full affair in all its pastel glory right here.

From Em The GemNicole and Myron – and their romantic wine country wedding day – are a beautiful example of how fluidly cultures blend in the San Francisco Bay Area. Nicole’s family comes from Mexico. Myron’s family comes from Sri Lanka. They met in San Diego and, fast forward eleven years, tied the knot in Sonoma Valley. His family is Hindu; her family is Catholic; and the reverend who married them is Presbyterian.

Weaving aspects of their cultures, values, and families into the wedding day was important to Nicole and Myron. From subtle touches like Sri Lankan treats as part of the dessert bar, to central moments like performing the Mexican Lasso ritual as part of the ceremony, they personalized every aspect of the day. They also wanted to honor those who could not attend in special ways, such as with the “Pepsi and Peanuts” station that Nicole put together in honor of her grandfather, who always gave the children of the family these items on their birthdays.

It was so wonderful to be a part of this day – all the families came together and had an amazing beautiful day in Sonoma. The weather was perfect, everyone enjoyed multiple trips to the dessert buffet and danced the night away.

Rustic Audubon Wedding Inspiration

SMPers, get ready to feast your eyes on some seriously pretty flora and fauna goodness. Inspired by vintage Audubon prints, this shoot is the perfect marriage of masculine and feminine, including the wildly beautiful invites from Paper Moss, braided leather hairstyle, rich hues, and even a signature whiskey cocktail. All in all, it’s sweet rustic wedding heaven. We’re sending Erin McGinnGreenlion Weddings and the entire vendor team a big ol’ virtual hug for sharing this gorgeous gallery with us.

From the vendor team… Mount Hope Farm, a national historic site with over 325 years of history, was the jumping off point for our springtime shoot. We wanted to create ambiance that highlighted the natural aspects of the Farm and the brilliance of the Spring season by choosing elements that complimented the property and all of its surroundings in a fresh and unique way. Inspired by vintage Audubon prints as well as birds, honeycomb, and other springtime fauna our vision seamlessly came to life. Paper Moss even incorporated some of the Audubon inspired prints into the stellar invitation design. We used rich and deep tones everywhere, leather, tobacco leaves, whiskey and wood to bring an almost masculine and moody, romantic feeling to the shoot while still allowing femininity to come across in the sweeping flowers, linen textiles, and gold rimmed place settings. Jennie Kay braided leather into our bride’s hair, and bedecked her Tony Hamawy gown with leather accents, while her dapper groom wore light-weight spring wool and season-appropriate corduroy with brown suede shoes and leather belt. As a reflection of the Farm’s natural abundance and life, farm fresh eggs were hand lettered by Heather Belle as place settings, local honey and farm-to-able ingredients were used in the cuisine prepared by Russell Morin Fine Catering, and Greenlion Design used some elements foraged from the 127 acres of land in the floral design to create a farm fresh vibe that matched the stunning natural surroundings.

Wine & Dine Welcome Dinner

Let me set the scene –  it’s the beginning of what will prove to be the best weekend your life, your friends and family are arriving, and the table is set for a fab Welcome Dinner. Now enter this inspiration full of greenery styled by Studio Fleurette + This Love Weddings and wine. Lots and lots of wine. It’s a relaxed yet totally elegant approach to welcoming captured by Laura Ivanova  that is sure to inspire.

From This Love WeddingsMany couples want to offer their guests a fun, relaxed yet stylish welcome to their wedding weekend. We took to creating a welcome dinner that’s sure to inspire. This romantic, organic, natural styled shoot was created at Minneapolis’ Uptown full service wine bar, Spill The Wine. We built the design around the elements of the beautiful space incorporating a wine tasting, chalkboards, and plenty of greenery.

We set the tone with a theme to have guests wine, dine, and unwind. Each place card included a note in beautiful calligraphy, “We pair well together, before we dine enjoy cheese and wine.” The pallette included a cheese and wine pairing featuring Rosé and red wines with a fun See-Swirl-Smell-Sip tutorial as well as wine tasting score cards. The table was dressed with a cascading garland of bay and olive branch mix with lush cream and ivory blooms. A bay, sliver dollar eucalyptus, olive branch mix was used to make the show-stopping chandelier.

DIY Santa Cruz Wedding at Rancho Soquel

Can you even imagine the pressure two wedding photographers must feel when it’s time to pick the perfect person to capture their big day? Talk about a hard planning desicion. But these two talents (he’s the genius behind Patterson Films and she of Majesta Patterson) knew exactly what they were doing when they asked Evynn LeValley to capture the magic of their big day. Their DIY wedding is one you’ll want to spend some serious quality time with, and you can do so here.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/73757164 600 338]

From The Bride…Being wedding photographers, we’ve seen A LOT. We knew what worked, what didn’t and were able to make our wedding personal and meaningful. So when we started planning, we knew we really wanted our wedding to be an elegant but fun event that kept some tradition with crafty, organic and romantic touches. That being said, we took on a lot of projects! Once we knew where we wanted to get a married, a lush garden/country estate, I grew my list of ideas:

From chalkboard signs made from thrifted picture frames & window panes to making our apricot jam from my parents backyard; we made it all! We made the wood ceremony arbor out of trees from my parents yard and $30 worth of supplies; we thrifted an old wooden ladder to paint fun signs with directions (since the estate was large and we held different events across the property); and made all painted signs from old wood and palettes on my parents property. Yes, I wrote all the signs with a paint brush.

I made our guestbook from an antique photo album featuring all of our engagement pictures; as well as, our cake topper, table numbers and we bottled and labeled our own wine from a local winery. It really was a labor of love.

My advice to future brides: make a list and ask for help. Know what’s a priority and if you can’t handle it all, delegate! Aside from our ceremony arch and jam favors, our other BIG task was to create our table runners. I simply didn’t have time and while it was cheaper to make it in supplies, it was worth the money to pay a rental company and relive me of my stress! We ended up loving our tables with the pink runners versus my original plans.

Lastly, put your time into the decor and hire someone to bring your vision to life. While we built, painted, ordered, boxed and prepped everything, I could not have executed my vision without my wedding coordinators. They really brought my vision to life and I’m so thankful!

Our wedding came to life beautifully. Our guests loved our signature drinks, bluegrass band, amazing DJ and our perfect ceremony. It was also really important to us that we included our guests in our ceremony and we wanted them to feel special. After all, they are our most loved! We asked a close friend to marry us, made sure we took a minute to look around when we finally stood at our ceremony arch, wrote our own vows and LAUGHED, cried and just had an amazing time. Even forgetting my vows back in the bridal suite (my brother ran and got them for me), our ceremony was nothing short of perfect and it’s one of my favorite memories from our wedding.

The whole day, it was just the best. And now, we have amazing pictures and video to look remember it by!

Hawaii Island Destination Wedding at Waikoloa Marriott Resort And Spa

What I wouldn’t give to have been invited to this wedding. It’s a destination dream come true. A perfect Hawaiian soiree filled to the gills with personality and love, not to mention a stunning seaside backdrop. Every image captured by Elena Graham makes me want to squeal with glee, and you can see why here.

From Elena Graham PhotographyChelsea and Tom traveled from Australia to have their wedding near Chelsea’s hometown on the Big Island of Hawaii. Every detail, from Chelsea’s Australian couture dress and black pearl engagement ring to their local Hawaiian florals, effortlessly encompassed a laid back island vibe.

From The Bride…There was one fact about our relationship everyone knew before we got engaged— before Tom and I had considered it ourselves—and that was where we would begin the rest of our lives together. My poor husband thought his job was done once he popped the question! Little did he know…

He is a good Kiwi bloke from New Zealand and I’m an island girl from Hawaii. To complicate things further, it would be a destination wedding for more than half our guests no matter what we chose, with most of our friends residing in our current home of Sydney, Australia.

Nonetheless, they confirmed it before we announced it: “We’re going to Hawaii!”

We wanted our celebration to reflect our laid back, Pacific style, choosing the lovely Waikoloa Marriott on the Kohala coast of Hawaii’s “Orchid Isle,” the Big Island. Some of my earliest memories are of hiking the peppered black and white sands along the coast with my family; my mother calling for me to wade into the cold brackish ponds lined with black stones, and my father fishing in the surf. But it wasn’t easy planning a wedding across the International Date Line.

My bridesmaids were all in different countries, so shopping together for a wedding dress or bridesmaids outfits was out. While I gave my girlfriends leave to mix and match their own dresses, I went with couture Australian designer Anaessia, which gave me the personalized touch of antique lace and hand-beaded blossoms that perfectly suited my island theme.

My mother always said my wedding would be just like the senior prom: You get the outfit and planning down and worry about the date last. She was right—she had been lining up local vendors for my wedding from the time I was a teenager, just waiting for me to pick a date!

We were so lucky to have Leilani’s Bakery, who made my sleepover birthday cakes, fashion a classic two-tier vanilla and haupia wedding cake with buttercream frosting. My bridesmaid and her mother (Francesca and Franca McGuffie) organized the orchid arrangements: from the bouquets and the hair accessories to the submerged cymbidium table arrangements anchored in black beach stones. We were also lucky to have Elena Graham as our photographer, a childhood friend with an eye for subtle emotion and photojournalistic storytelling.

Our guests were welcomed to the ceremony with a traditional slack key guitar player and seated looking out through the palm trees and over the ocean. Tom carried the vows we wrote together in the inside pocket of his royal blue M.J. Bale suit, and it was all over too quickly. The rings, a kiss and we were man and wife.

After signing the wedding licence, we greeted each of our 90 guests with a fragrant plumeria lei. It was a beautiful idea by the event manager to afford us that personal moment with each guest who made the journey to be with us.

After a hearty buffet dinner organized by the hotel, my niece and nephews chased a ball across the lawn, one of the gifts my mother prepared along with a little basket of crayons and paper to entertain them through the evening.

Kiwis are big on speeches, and our friends had us rolling with laughter until our cheeks were so sore we thought it was impossible to keep smiling.

But I had one more surprise for my husband. Months before, I agonised over my footwear, having to choose my shoes before the dress was finished so they could tailor the length: flats or heels? Though the sand and grass were a consideration, I chose simple flat sandals so I could perform a traditional barefoot hula for my husband.

It was beautiful to share this place that meant so much to my family before. Now we have another special moment here commemorating not only our union, but recognizing our friends and families as one ohana.

Texas Bluebonnet Engagement Session

Want to take some stunning engagement pics, all the while paying homage to the Lone Star State?  Then spend your day frolicking around a gorgeous bluebonnet field (Texas’ state flower) like these two cuties did.  It’s the perfect combo of Texas pride, love-filled moments and jaw-droppingly gorgeous beauty.  See it all captured by dV Photography right here.

From the Bride-to-Be… Austin and I got engaged on a chilly day in New York City last winter. It was the perfect moment. We sat in Central Park imagining what life would be like as a married couple and the kind of wedding we wanted to have.

We both currently live in Houston together, so we knew we wanted our engagement session to bring light to our home in Texas. What better way to bring the Lone Star State into our photos than to surround ourselves with bluebonnets? (For any non-Texans out there, the bluebonnet is the state flower.) One problem… finding a bluebonnet field is harder than it sounds. Our photographers (who are also close friends) spent most of the day driving in and around Navasota, TX with us until we found the perfect field. And when we finally found it, we stayed until sunset.

Austin and I couldn’t be happier with our photos. They completely captured us and the casual feel we were hoping for. We both love the simplicity and natural elements each photo brings and we will always remember that day we spent in the bluebonnet fields. Our next outdoor adventure will be at Maroon Bells in Aspen, Colorado where we plan to have an intimate summer wedding in the mountains.

Rustic Elegance at the Vinewood Plantation

This sweet duo has rustic elegance down to an absolute science.  From their crazy gorgeous sunset ceremony beneath a large oak tree to their chandelier and farm table filled reception at the always amazing Vinewood Plantation, it’s a serious lesson in southern charm meets downright sophistication. See every glorious moment captured by (once like a spark) photography right here.

From the Bride… When planning our wedding, we knew we wanted something unique, beautiful, and warm. We wanted our guests to feel at home and Vinewood Plantation had just the right touch of southern charm and rustic elegance our hearts were set on. Our family and friends are such an important part of our lives and we wanted everyone to feel like family that day, because to us, they are!

Our bridal party style was simple, neutral, and fun. I let the girls choose their own dresses within a blush color palette. I wanted them to show off their own personalities and they did a fabulous job. For the reception, I chose to wear a handmade headpiece by Doloris Petunia. It was absolutely my favorite piece of the night. I fell in love with detailed Swarovski crystals and silk petals and knew it would be the perfect addition to my look for the reception.

The ceremony under the wedding tree could not have been more beautiful. We chose to get married during the “golden hour” with the sun setting in the background. The natural setting our venue provided was so gorgeous that we decided to add minimal touches of decor. We had small flower arrangements on wooden barrels at the front of the aisles and a vintage mantle frame at the altar. To symbolize my husband’s father who passed away one year before our wedding, we had a picture and a candle placed on the mantle. We have kept both to be displayed in our home and this is so precious to both of us.

Of course, as tradition says, everything at our ceremony did not go exactly as planned. I was standing with my father preparing to begin the processional when my wedding planner, Maria, had a look of horror sweep across her face. I heard the pastor starting into a prayer that wasn’t supposed to begin until after I was there. Our officiant was so excited that he forgot to wait for me to walk down the aisle! When the pastor began the service without me, my sweet groom leaned in and said, “I think she may want to be here for this.”  He didn’t realize the microphone was right there and all of our guests heard. Everyone had a good laugh and it is a funny memory that we will cherish forever. In the end, I did get to walk down the aisle and see my husband-to-be for the first time that day. We chose not to do a first look beforehand and that moment was something we will never forget.

The reception was held in the stables, which provided the perfect canvas for our imagination. We chose to utilize a variety of small details to create the atmosphere we wanted. The mismatched vintage china, multicolored antique goblets and stemware, assorted florals, lace and burlap runners, and crystal chandeliers created the inviting, shabby-chic ambiance we had envisioned. Having fun, mismatched stemware and china was really important to me, but we couldn’t afford to rent the average 6 pieces per guest. Instead, I handmade name tags and placed one on each antique goblet. Our guests could choose from any of the uniquely shaped glasses in varying hues of blush, amber, and purple, keep it for the night, and refill it with any libation they wanted. I also really wanted a picture table to display the precious wedding photos of our close family members. I framed the wedding photos in varying rustic frames I found from a local craft store and placed them on a table scattered with single stem flowers, our guest book, and tea-light candles. Above the frames, I strung my favorite photos of my husband and I with miniature wooden clothespins and twine along the chalkboard. This table was one of my favorite additions to the reception decor because of its personal meaning to our families and us.

We catered southern style food including shrimp and grits, a rib-eye carving station, fried green tomatoes, biscuits, jalapeno-pimento cheese sandwiches, and crab cakes. We had three different cakes, keeping in line with our eclectic wedding style. The cakes were lemon, white-chocolate raspberry, and carrot. Instead of a groom’s cake, we opted for a dessert bar with my husband’s favorites: mini peach and blackberry cobblers, as well as bourbon pecan pies. After everyone ate, we danced the night away to the music from our live band, Rustic Charlie. Later in the night, our guests enjoyed s’mores by the fire pit and we were sent on our way with an amazing sparkler send-off.

Our wedding may not have been perfect, but it was everything we wanted. We became husband and wife and spent the day celebrating with many of the people who matter most to us. What a beautiful day it was.

Romantic Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards Wedding

In one word, this wedding is cozy. It’s a blend of laid back farm goodness with a bit of vineyard elegance, topped off with soft florals from Bee Hive Events and gilded details galore. It all makes for one crazy romantic fete. Jeff & Jane Greenough stood behind all the love and came out on the other side with beautiful-as-ever imagery to feast our eyes on. See it all right here!

From Jeff & Jane Greenough PhotographyKatie & Mike are so cute – and really special people. Jeff and I loved getting to know them on their April 12th wedding at the very beautiful PIPPIN HILL FARM. The day could not have been more beautiful, and was exactly what this sweet couple deserved. After dating for 11 years, their wedding celebration was all that they had envisioned. EASTON EVENTS did a wonderful job coordinating the day, as always. Shawn Cossette of BEEHIVE EVENTS skillfully executed Katie’s floral vision, while Kathy at FAVORITE CAKES created an elegant cake that we heard was delicious. The ceremony took place at ST. PAUL’S MEMORIAL CHURCH in Charlottesville and was officiated by the Reverend Jim Richardson. Katie and Mike both come from large families, and it was obvious that they are dearly loved. We are so happy to have been able to get to know you and your sweet families, and wish you only the very best in your coming years of life together as husband and wife!!

A healthy dose of dark rum mixed with sweet salted caramel sauce and topped with lots of good old fashioned root beer makes this a tasty dessert and cocktail in one!

And let’s face it, during the hot summer months, what grown-up kid at heart wouldn’t want to indulge in a boozy ice cream float? Of course you could add a bit more rum to taste or switch up the flavor profile by substituting chocolate ice cream. Classic-Meets-Modern Indiana Wedding

With a traditional church ceremony followed by a warehouse-set reception, it’s hard to pin this wedding in just one style category. We’re calling it classic-meets-modern a la Michael Angelos Events, and the gallery from Averyhouse is what bespoke made weddings are all about. Dive in right here!

From averyhouse… Kristi and Mike had wanted to balance out the traditional feel of their Notre Dame ceremony with the contemporary reception venue they had chosen. Kristi chose her dress for the heirloom style and her husband to be chose a formal black tux.

After the ceremony, Kristi + Mike’s bridal party were led into the Notre Dame arena for photos where Kristi was once a cheerleader! They also took a moment to reenact a photo that her parents had taken on their wedding day over 30 years prior with the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Church gold dome in the backdrop. A custom logo adorned with the bride and groom’s last name of Iaquinta greeted guests upon arriving at their reception venue. Kristi had wanted to incorporate nude, champagne, and ivory colors into her modern + elegant reception.

Manhattan Rooftop Wedding at Tribeca Rooftop

Equal parts elegant, chic and stylish, this Tribeca Rooftop wedding is everything I hope for when I lay eyes on a NYC wedding. Everything and more. It’s timeless yet packed with this couples’ personality, leaving us with a gallery captured by Lauren Gabrielle Photography too fabulous to miss.

From The Bride…From the moment we were engaged we both knew that we wanted a signature NYC wedding! We envisioned a very modern and intimate wedding, but with our own personal and traditional Greek touch.

Once we visited Tribeca Rooftop, we knew that was it! The skyline view was magnificent- I mean being able to have a rooftop wedding was a sure plus! The entire view of NYC just never gets old, and we knew all our local guests and of course out of towers would surely be blown away!

Right away my Pinterest-ing and blog hunting skills went straight to work! Style me pretty was one of my top favorites, which luckily brought me across our extremely talented photographer, Lauren Gabrielle and cinematographer, Tweed Video.

We had the greatest experience working with Lauren. She was such a pleasure to work with and share our special day. She captured all our amazing moments, including the tears, laughs and everything in between. We are able to relive our wedding each and every time we look through our photos.

Of course the same feeling goes across to Tweed Video! Their work is outstanding! The sneak-peek of our wedding in the amazing mini video had gone viral among all our friends and family, before we received the real deal. The entire wedding video captured the true essence of our day, from beginning to end.

The staff at Tribeca was extremely friendly and reliable, specifically Mark and George. They were available to answer all questions and concerns for the party, including being able to add personal touches to the room. As an anxious bride hoping to have everything fall into place nicely, the staff did everything they could to make sure of that! From the beginning of the night, all our guests were able to taste our wonderful signature drink. English Country Garden Wedding

This wedding is starting out with a fashionable bang (i.e. bridesmaid’s dresses for the books and a lace gown that could kill) and is ending with an English Garden party ripe with crimson florals by Bo Boutique and vintage styling by Helen Millot Furnishings. We love a good garden party, after all, and this gem shot by WOOKIE Photography is proving the English know their way around a fab outdoor affair.

From The Bride…Ben and I went on our first date when we were 12 years old in our hometown of Cambridge, UK. We were in neighbouring schools; I was at the all girls’ school and Ben was in the all boys’ school down the road. Our first date was a rendez-vouz in town one Saturday lunchtime. We were young at the time so, as romantic and sweet as the date was, it didn’t really go beyond sharing an ice- cream and a stroll through the park! Two years later our eyes met again at the mixed girls and boys secondary school. It was then we went on our second and more successful date and spent the most amazing 4 years together. We were high school sweethearts who got to see each other everyday and share some special moments together.

We knew straight away that we wanted an English country garden wedding in Cambridge. It’s where we met and where we are both from so it means a lot to both of us. The fact that it’s a very beautiful city and most of our family still lived there was an added bonus.

We opted for a humanist wedding. It felt like the right choice- we wanted our ceremony to be very personal and a chance to tell our story to family and friends. For us, our wedding was the chance to celebrate our next chapter with them, and also thank them for all their support over the years that had already passed.

Ben and I wanted an outside ceremony in a beautiful garden and preferably near the River Cambs, so with this in mind my Mother, Ben and I began our search. After a few weeks of looking, and word getting around, a close family friend offered us their house for our wedding. The house used to belong to well know 1960s hairdresser Raymond Bessone, AKA Mr Teasy –Weasy! It’s a beautiful property with lots of quirks and has the most amazing garden that leads down to a secret river. Perfect. It was typically English, typically Cambridge and in the exact right location.

The style and design of our wedding definitely changed and developed over the year leading up to the day itself. A big turning point for the design of the day was when my Mother offered me her late Mother’s (my Grandmother’s) antique silver cutlery to use. My Grandmother, Hélène Millot, was a Parisian dressmaker and costumier in the 1920s so you can just image how old and beautiful the cutlery is. (In fact the ornate engraving on the silver suggests that some of the pieces could be over 100 years old!)

And so our classic English country garden wedding became an English garden wedding with a chic French twist. I matched the antique silver cutlery with lots and lots of antique brass candlesticks, a very classic combination. The table glasses were all crystal and cut glass, and mismatched for a modern yet vintage twist. Simple white plates and white napkins gave the table clean lines avoiding the look becoming too eclectic.

The colour palate was determined when I found my dress. I searched high and low for one that was off-white and I finally found it in a Justin Alexander design. The description of the dress was antique gold but in actual fact it was a gorgeous taupe colour. I matched the table linen with the colour of dress by sourcing some beautiful Ralph Lauren tablecloths, and also managed to find some perfect taupe candles which I shipped in from a shop called Blokker, in Amsterdam.

The tables were adorned with beautiful deep red Peonies, grapes and Eucalyptus, all overflowing from antique brass vases onto the long tables, arranged beautifully by the talented Bo Boutique. It was a significant colour pop but worked perfectly with the lush greens coming in from the garden through the vast clear windows of the marquee.

The day itself was just as I had imagined: a personal, relaxed and most importantly incredibly romantic occasion- with a party atmosphere! We had hoped for an outdoor ceremony but in typical English fashion our weather was not kind to us! But this did not in anyway dampen the mood. Our ceremony took place in the marquee, in front of the large clear windows that looked out onto the large spans of garden down to the river. Then just as the ceremony finished, as though on auto timer, the sun came out and we were able to enjoy drinks and canapés outside. It was incredible!

Romantic Big Bear Lake Engagement Session

Today’s little love session from Closer To Love Photography is so cute that I can’t even stand it. It’s one of those that you just know generations to come will peruse, in awe of the sweet, sweet love these two have for one another. Because who wouldn’t swoon at romantic kisses in a red canoe on a serene, tree-lined lake? See every beautiful moment right here in the gallery.

From Closer To Love PhotographyFor as long as I can remember, I have always dreamed of having an opportunity to photograph a couple near the lake. Add a canoe on top of that already-perfect dream and I would be in heavennn;) Well, my dream became a reality just a few days ago when the perfect couple, Tabitha and Anthony, gave me full creative control in planning their Engagement Session! Tabitha gave me the green light to do anything my creative mind came up with. Anything? Yes, anything! Including jumping into the lake at the end of the Session! ;) The results are magical. Yes, we walked away muddy, exhausted, hungry and dizzy from the twisty roads on Big Bear Mountain… but it was ALL. SO. WORTH. IT! If a couple is capable of surviving such an adventurous Engagement Session like Tabitha and Anthony endured, I have no doubt their marriage will withstand any obstacle that comes their way! I am so incredibly blessed to have spent the day with Tabitha and Anthony and if I had a “Trooper of the Year” Award, it would definitely go to these two! I hope you enjoy viewing these images as much as I did capturing them all!

Behind the Scenes: Brooklyn Farmacy + a GIVEAWAY!

Welcome to Brooklyn Farmacy! A vortex that instantly transports you back in time to a magical place. A classic ice cream parlour. Soda jerks. The works! Ice cream floats are picture perfect, and made to share (two straws, please!), and banana splits are the size of your face (as they should be!) We’ve gone behind the scenes, and we’re here to spill the deets. With photos from our darling Cynthia Chung, there’s more!

SMP: Tell us a little about Brooklyn Farmacy!
Brooklyn Farmacy is a family run (brother and sister team) shop. We opened our doors Summer of 2010. Our soda fountain is housed in a 1920s apothecary corner store in Carroll Gardens, in Brooklyn, New York. We pride ourselves in bringing the soda fountain culture back to life, and are thrilled when we hear of soda fountains making a comeback all over the country.

SMP: What’s it like to own your own brick and mortar shop?
It’s like having a newborn that never grows up. That said, there is an incredible sense of satisfaction that comes with creating a place that people love to visit. We wear a lot of hats, some that fit us perfectly, and some that are more challenging. There is little separation between who we are and what we do. We bring our full selves to all of it.

SMP: The hardest thing about business ownership?
It’s like having a newborn that never grows up. :) Seriously, the hardest part of being a small business is that there are so many hats to wear. In a larger organization, there is a budge to have people overseeing everything from inventory to HR. In a small business, all of the same tasks apply, but there is not a budget big enough to hire individuals to oversee all of these positions. So we end up working almost all the time.

SMP: The best part about owning your own business?
Creating. Both of us love to create, and to invent new things. From sundaes to window displays to soda jerk lingo, we enjoy the process of creating.

SMP: Any tips for someone hoping to follow in your footsteps?
Be prepared to pour your heart and soul into what you do. Compensation comes in a variety of ways, not just in monetary ways. You have really love what you are doing, because there is no break when you own a business. You have to enjoy what you are doing, whether it be creating and inventing new things, to mopping the floor, because as a business owner, if the person whose job it is to mop the floor does a lousy job, chances are you won’t be able to turn a blind eye. It is always your job at the end of the day.

SMP: One thing that really made your business thrive?
When customers see that we love what we do. And, it doesn’t hurt that we are in the business of serving ice cream, which, hopefully, makes everyone happy.

SMP: One thing you wish you had done earlier?
Taken a bookkeeping course.

SMP: What’s your secret to success?
Our motto is, “How you do any thing is how you do every thing.” We try to bring our A game to every task in front of us. In some ways, not coming from the industry gives us license to create the way we think things should be done. This can create chaos sometimes, no doubt, but it also is an energy that keeps things alive.

SMP: 5 things you always keep in your pantry?
Vanilla, heavy cream, rainbow sprinkles, pretzel rods and (in the freezer) vanilla ice cream.

SMP: And most importantly: what’s the secret to a perfect sundae?
A perfect sundae, even if it includes five different toppings, should capture in every spoonful the right proportion of each flavor. There is nothing worse than being almost done with a sundae but the last bite doesn’t have enough whipped cream or caramel sauce. Proportions are every thing. And it should be beautiful. Creating a sundae is like carving a sculpture. From the scooping of the ice cream, to the layering of the whipped cream to the drizzling of the hot caramel, the sundae should present itself as completely irresistible to the eye.
