Bluebird Kisses Home Tour

As far as I’m concerned, Ana of Bluebird Kisses is living the dream. Located in the west end of Toronto, walking distance from some of the city’s best restaurants, bars and fancy doughnut shops, this renovated Victorian is enough to make any design lovers knees buckle. With photos from Annawithlove, we don’t mind if you stop and stare.

From Ana… We bought a 107 year old home with lots of quirks knowing we would likely need to put some work into it. Its previous owner had lived here for over 50 years and took amazing care of it. It may sound odd but I look at homes as more than just walls and windows. I feel like each home has its own spirit, and we instantly fell in love with the spirit of this old house.

The main floor is the darkest space in our home, as is the case with many of the old homes built so close together in Toronto. My goal was to keep the crown moulding and baseboards in their original state and then paint the entire space bright white so it would reflect light as much as possible. I have a secret love for mid-century furniture and also an obsession with travel so I tried to bring both elements into the living room through the furniture I chose as well as the accessories.

I love the dining room, even though we probably spend the least amount of time here. I wanted to keep everything as light as possible and just introduced some touches of brass. The biggest thing for me was finding a way to display my crystal glass ware that my grandmother passed down to me, so I decided to create a little bar area to display the glasses and decanters. When I couldn’t find the right artwork to go above the bar, I decided to make my own print.

The kitchen was dark and quite sad looking when we moved in. There was a speckled beige backsplash that extended the entire left side of the wall, and ran up to the ceiling. We had it ripped out and replaced with white subway tile for a cleaner look. We left the cabinets, counter tops and sink as they were and added white open shelves to make the space feel less closed in. I also found the perfect kitchen island on sale at a local Mennonite shop so we brought that in and its now turned into our family eating area.

The master bedroom had a terrible layout and a tiny closet which was not usable by either Michael or I. First on the list, we had the wall built up around the chimney to 6 feet, and installed open shelves to allow us some usable space for books and photos. We removed the door to our tiny closet, and had the wall closed. Then we used Ikea wardrobes to span the entire wall and just had our contractor trim them in so they give the illusion of being “built in”.

The kids rooms are by far my absolute FAVOURITE rooms to decorate and put together! Especially with Johannes’ room now that he’s older, his personality comes out in his room. This bedroom also had a tiny little closet in it and it shares a wall with our master bedroom, so when we closed up the door to the closet in our master we decided to use that space and create a wall to wall real built-in closet for Johannes. This will allow Johannes to grow into this space and not have to worry about storage.

We are expecting our newest little boy to join our clan come late August/early September so this space is all for him. I don’t know what his personality will be like just yet, so my goal was to make his space a clean slate. A space where he will be able to grow and add his own personal touch some day. I stuck with a neutral black and white palette and added just a few colourful pieces.

Los Angeles Estate Garden Wedding

From a ukelele serenaded proposal to a vintage secret garden-inspired soiree that took place at the Groom’s childhood home, this L.A. affair is enchanting to say the least. Designed by the ultimate DIY Bride and now owner of House Of Hartt, every inch of detailing was hand selected and chosen with love. For even more, head to the pretty gallery from The Youngrens!

From the beautiful Bride… Josh and I met on eHarmony, myself, I had only been on there for two weeks, so luckily I didn’t have to go through a slew of bad dates before finding Josh. Just 6 months in we went on our first vacation in Kauai, and by then I already knew he was the one. 3 years from our very first date we found ourselves back in Kauai again for our annual summer vacation, but this time it was different. Josh had purchased a new camera that he had been filming me do almost everything on, including eating and walking, so when he decided to leave the camera rolling overnight to “catch the sunrise” I didn’t question his motives. The next morning on our 3 year anniversary he woke me at 6:30 by opening the wall of curtains revealing the brightest ocean view. I immediately rolled over trying to go back to sleep. He finally was able to coax me to come to the edge of the bed, just barely awake he begins to serenade me with his ukulele (not unusual by the way). I start noticing though this time his voice is shaking, he actually seemed nervous which is not the norm. After finishing up 1,2,3,4 by Plain White Tees and a couple restarts of the song, he gets down on one knee and asks the question I had been waiting to hear almost 2 1/2 years ago! To make it even more perfect he surprised me with a serenade at our wedding! Which I was completely blown away by! He sings in front of me all the time, but never in front of an audience – an audience turns him a bit shy and bashful. But not on the day of our wedding! He was so confident and charming. He chose the song Stuck on You by Lionel Richie, which was a perfect song given I did feel like I had waited so long to become his Mrs.. It was perfect, right out of a movie.

As far as choosing our venue, we had quite the adventure! We first forfeited our deposit on the original venue we had booked. A few weeks in we had realized we had gotten ourselves into a very expensive situation and decided to cut our losses and move on. And although we did have a tight budget I didn’t want to compromise the elegance and warmth of the wedding I had envisioned in my head. I knew that if we could just find the right place we could make it our own and DIY it! After looking at almost every venue in Los Angeles and Ventura county, we revisited a thought we had in the very beginning, having it at Josh’s moms house – the very house he grew up in. Aesthetically it was everything I wanted anyways: lush gardens, mature trees hanging over you, organic and intimate, like you had just entered into a secret garden. The only reason we had veered away in the beginning was because it would have forced us to cut our guest list in half. But, it ended up being worth it, and I think ultimately it was meant to be. We had an intimate wedding of about 75 of all of our closest friends and family and a FREE venue! Plus the fact that Josh grew up in the house and that we of course go to his moms house all the time is a huge bonus! We get to stand in the very spot we got married in as often as we like.

The inspiration for the wedding from the very beginning was ‘vintage secret garden’. I didn’t want anything too forced, too formal, too matchy-matchy and definitely as far away from the typical ballroom or wedding hall. I wanted it to look like we just had all these things inside of our house, old family heirlooms, tapestries and mismatched crystal vases, things we had had for years, that we just sort of threw together at the very last minute to create an inviting, beautiful and mystical space. Of course, that wasn’t the case at all. The reality is I went on a hunt for about 8 months through every salvation army, good will store, antique store and craigslist ad to collect almost every single piece by hand. And just to make it even more esthetically fun, we had all of our guests dress to the nines in black tie attire. It was formal and informal all at the same time. I absolutely loved creating this space so much so it inspired me to continue sharing this experience through House of Hartt Rentals & Design, a boutique vintage rental and design company.

From Michael & Anna Costa Photography….Libras can be described as indecisive, but when this Libra couple (born on the same day in October) saw their wedding venue on a rainy February day, they knew immediately this was the perfect spot for their late summer Santa Barbara wedding. Mike, having grown up in Santa Barbara, introduced Krista to this beautiful coastal city during weekend road trips to visit his family and friends – a short distance from Los Angeles, where the couple resides.

It was important to Krista and Mike that their love of music, artistic sense and love of family and friends be woven into their wedding day. Starting with photos for their Save the Date, Krista’s younger brother snapped images of the couple around the Silver Lake neighborhood where they fell in love several years earlier. Krista worked with her parents to create the wedding invites, menu cards, and programs which all incorporated hand drawn images from her dad and copy drafted by her mom. Mike’s sister baked their delicious four-tier wedding cake and Mike music directed the entire event. He selected each song for keyboard (played by a special family friend), the lower courtyard reception play list, and worked with their close friend Charlie Cole who is the lead singer of the band Famous For Nothing, for live reception music. The biggest surprise of the night for Krista was when Mike jumped on stage and played guitar with the band, which had the entire wedding rocking for the remainder of the night.

The couple had a grand exit, hugging and kissing their guests good-bye as everyone waved streamers and rang bells. Krista and Mike were peddled away on a bicycle Pedi cab into the streets of downtown Santa Barbara.

Behind the Blog: Bluebird Kisses

Allow me to introduce you to the wonderful work of Bluebird Kisses. Toronto based blogger and soon to be mother of two, this rockstar of a woman is kicking blogging butt and taking names. The jist: part mommy blog, part design blog, part all around awesome in the prettiest little package. With photos from our beloved Annawithlove, we’re going behind the blog!

SMP: Tell us a little about Bluebird Kisses!
AK: Bluebird Kisses is my space to share the things that I love, thoughts I would otherwise put into a diary, recipes that I try, fashion that works for me and of course, photos of my family and things that we do together. I suppose if I had to put my blog into a specific bucket, it would be a “lifestyle blog”, but to me its a space to make my voice heard.

SMP: What made you decide to start a blog?
AK: I originally wanted to start my blog while I was planning my wedding 7 years ago. But life got in the way and by the time my actual blog design was finished and ready for me to use it was 3 years later, I was married and had just given birth to Johannes. I was going to abandon it all together but my husband, Michael, encouraged me to maybe try it out. None of my friends were married or moms at the time and I felt isolated and lonely, so in the end Bluebird Kisses was a great outlet for me.

SMP: What’s one thing you’ve learnt along the way?
AK: Not everyone will love you or your blog, and people can actually be quite cruel and judgemental. Its important to maintain your own voice but focus on the positives rather than the negatives.

SMP: If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
AK: I think I would start my blog off more like a diary. Initially I was looking at it as giant Pinterest board, so I was mainly posting about things I was buying, or wanted to buy. Inspiration for rooms and so on. But the real connection with the readers came when I shared stories about the real things that were happening in my daily life. I would focus more on that from the beginning.

SMP: One piece of advice you’d give to a blogger just starting out?
AK: Be original and try not to compare yourself to others. I think its probably easier said than done, especially the comparison part. But in a day and age where we have things like Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, we are constantly bombarded with images of other bloggers, their posts and successes. It’s easy to see that and try to emulate. But original content for me is key!

SMP: Your most embarrassing blog moment?
AK: Oh geeze! There are quite a few. I think most embarrassing was someone mistaking me for another blogger with a similar blog name and then having to sit there and explain that I was in fact someone else. It didn’t help that three of my friends were with me at the time. And a close second on the embarrassment scale would be when I went away on vacation and forgot to renew my domain name. Only to come home and find out that my entire site was shut down!

SMP: What was the tipping point in your business that made you feel your blog was going to thrive?
AK: I’m going to thrive?! ha ha. I’m not sure exactly if there was one specific point in time. Probably early last year when magazines started to contact me about doing features on Bluebird Kisses? It was a slow progression in traffic and followers. I’m still not one hundred percent sure exactly where my blog/business will lead, but as long as people want to continue reading what I write I will continue writing!

SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of time?
AK: Black. Its classic and looks good on everyone. Men, women, kids, interiors. Black is beautiful and timeless.

SMP: One thing you simply can’t live with out?
AK: My iPhone. I would say my boys, but I’m assuming you’re referring to something material. So my iPhone it is. I take it everywhere. Its my way to stay in touch with family and friends. Its also my personal assistant and my primary photography source, so much easier than carrying around my DSLR.

SMP: Three things every stylish homeowner should have?
AK: A good bar cart, simple glass vases for fresh flowers and at least one floor length mirron.

SMP: Your favourite online design resource?
AK: Pinterest, and maybe Design Sponge. But first and foremost Pinterest.

From The Bride..Being a floral and event designer, I have the luxury of finding out what a my clients’ dream wedding looks like and taking it from there. But when I got engaged, the first thing I thought was, how on earth am I going to pick just one style?? There are so many incredible options, I knew I couldn’t pick just one – so I thought of everything that encompassed Parker and me and mashed up each of our styles into one big explosion of color and style.

Parker asked me to marry him on a sailboat in Maine, so his anchor socks were very apropos. I love that his groomswoman decided to match the boys’ oxfords. I let my bridesmaids pick something I knew they could wear again and wanted an eclectic yet complementary collection of glamorous colors, textures, and patterns. Between Adrianna Papell, Jenny Yoo, and Xscape, they definitely made it happen. Because I’m a bit of a bohemian, I had to include moccasins somewhere, so we had all the kids in Minnetonkas (I actually changed into a pair later that night!).

We chose the courthouse because we met in Santa Barbara and the Mural Room is just so gorgeous. The majority of our guests were coming from out of town so we figured we’d give them a mini glimpse into our lives, starting out in Santa Barbara then heading out to wine country where we had just moved. It was very important to us for everyone to feel like they were at home, which is why we decided to have the reception at our house.

Having the opportunity to work with so many amazing local vendors over the last few years, there was no question who I wanted to entrust with our wedding needs. The best advice I can give to any bride is to find someone you connect with, hire them immediately, and let them take your inspiration and run with it. I told everyone our colors, the variety of themes we were going for, and how we wanted our guests to feel and let them take it from there.

I wasn’t sure where to start in terms of design. Our styles are super eclectic so I wanted to incorporate vintage, americana, bohemian, and glam and did a combo of antique furniture, leather and sequin pillows and linens, animal prints, metallic paper lanterns, tinsel, and the brightest flower combos I could think of. I wanted the reception to feel like a giant party, so I went as loud as I could go in terms if color and design.

I don’t know where I would be without our photographer, Jillian. I had a feeling the day would fly by and I would miss so much and knew that she would capture it all beautifully and she did. I can’t get over these photos, I feel like I’m looking at a wonderful dream when I look through them. She caught every single moment and documented every single detail and I can’t recommend her enough!

Omni Catering absolutely nailed it with the “elevated comfort food” we wanted. Parker and I love food and entertaining and we wanted our guests to just relax and make themselves at home. I happen to be addicted to Mac n’ Cheese so they came up with a Mac n’ Cheese bar (complete with bacon, gorgonzola, and crispy onions). Parker loves seafood, so we had ceviche shooters, oysters on the half shell, and ahi tartar in wonton chips. Couple all that with a trio of sliders, amazing salads, and tray passed hors d’oeuvres after a gorgeous antipasto welcome station and everyone is still raving about the food. We wanted everyone to graze, so we had an all evening cocktail hour – no rules, no agenda.

I’ve known Heather with Sweet Spils my entire life and was so thrilled she wanted to be a part of our day (I may have nudged her in our direction). She called to ask what we wanted and I told her I to do whatever she thought represented us. Not only were they gorgeous and one of a kind, but they were beyond delicious.

I also happen to be a big fan of champagne so what better way to celebrate than with a bubbly bar?! I’ve been collecting vintage champagne coupes for the last couple years so I paired those with crystal decanters and vintage liquor inspired tags from Bad Leroy Creations to label the juices.

I tend to go overboard on most things in life, so the DIY list is too long. So unless you have a staff of 20 at your beck and call, just hire someone to do it (seriously!). Parker’s last name is Hardt, so I had to incorporate that. I found a super cool geometric heart online and used that as our logo throughout the wedding. I sewed the leather pillows, painted and hung the paper lanterns, made tassels and fringe, cut out the big wooden heart and covered it with glitter, painted the mason jars in a variety of metallic paints, and collaborated with Meg at Sweet Carolina Collective on all the wooden menus and signage.

The passion from every single person involved in our wedding is still beyond my comprehension. Up until the day of I kept thinking we should’ve just eloped. But as soon as I walked into our backyard and saw every single person we love and the whole vision come to life I knew that it was all worth it. I really wish we could do it all again.

Sundance Wedding Film with “No Show” Officiant

What seemed like a wedding disaster – we’re talking a no-show officiant with just 30 minutes before the ceremony – turned into a beautiful metaphor for life’s unplanned moments. Dave and Emily reacted with grace and thanks to a close friend stepping in on a moment’s notice, their wedding turned out (dare I say) EVEN better. Ryan Hinman Films captured their story you don’t want to miss!

Whimsical

From Ryan Hinman Films I filmed this wedding last fall at a great private home in Sundance Utah. It was a very personal occasion, friends and family. A small affair. 30 minutes prior to the ceremony, the officiant told the couple she couldn’t make it. Some sort of scheduling mix up. A close friend of the couple stood in to marry them and it became my favorite ceremony of last year. Really personal, heartfelt and amazing. The vows were all “on the fly”.

From The Bride… My vision for the wedding included descriptions such as “ethereal, whimsical, magical….”  I wanted everything to be “flowy.”  I wanted to be completely comfortable and for everyone else to feel the same.  Thus the bare feet, flowing and simple dress, warm weather and soft grass.  We looked up the weather on the Farmer’s Almanac and saw that it hadn’t rained in 25 years around the date of June 23.

We did not have an actual wedding planner but several friends and family members offered their “services” to make the wedding run smoothly.  My sister’s boyfriend offered to be the “go-to guy” on the day of the event.  He heroically coordinated a very complicated and stressful job of handling the shuttle process.

We did manage to get ready in time for the 5:00 ceremony.  At 5:30, someone brought a message from David who was asking if I knew where the officiant was.  We called the woman who seemed to have completely forgotten about the event (despite several meetings in person ahead of time, multiple emails, confirmations, pre-payment and everything!)  We had to think quickly.  Tom Murray came to mind immediately.  He had officiated for my friends Sarah and Tommy De Angelo at their wedding almost 10 years ago.  I knew he was officially “qualified,” but I also share a special bond with Tom and I knew only he could rise to such an intimidating challenge.  We nervously discussed the way the ceremony would play out.

My biggest desire was for Tom to acknowledge both of our parents.  I assured him that we would take care of our own vows and he assured me that he would know what to do from there.  David and I had wanted to write our own vows but never got around to it as it was buried beneath the busy work of wedding planning.  We even tried to discuss our vows the night before the wedding but kept getting caught up in all of the things that needed to be accomplished on the wedding day.

Somehow it all flowed together, exactly as it should be.  I was so happy to have a friend be the one to preside over our marriage ceremony.  It bonded the 3 of us together, even closer, forever.  And it bonded David and I to all of our friends and family who were there to witness the day.

Later, after everything was over and we were settling down to go to sleep, I finally had a moment with my husband for the one tradition that I had really wanted to introduce into my wedding day.  I had learned about it years before on a trip to visit some artist and creator friends with my Uncle Al, on the Hopi reservation.  I had asked one of the women on First Mesa about their wedding customs.  She told me that the bride and groom rise together at dawn, wash their hair together in the same bin and then braid their hair together, pieces of the bride’s hair, braided into the hair of the groom.  It was then that the couple were symbolically joined.  I took the pieces of my long, curly hair and braided it together with David’s long curly hair.  Now we were finally married.  It was truly one of the happiest days of my life.

Destination Wedding in Corfu, Greece

Hold onto your hats SMPers, because this wedding planned by White Ribbon Boutique Events Coordination is beyond. Did I mention that it’s in Greece? Or covered in gorgeous florals in fabulous pink hues from Rammos Flowers? Or that the couple looks like they stepped out of a magazine? I didn’t? Well, that’s because it there really are no words that will do this soiree justice, but thankfully Thanasis Kaiafas gorgeous images speak for themselves. See even more here.

From White Ribbon Boutique Events CoordinationWhen the couple first contacted us, we immediately realized that this was going to be a very special event! Both the bride and groom live in New York by they had envisioned a destination wedding in Greece. They chose the beautiful island of Corfu to host they wedding celebrations.

Guests started arriving on the island two days before the wedding from different parts of the world, including the US, UK, India, Nigeria and China. The celebrations included a welcoming dinner at a beautiful hillside villa, a sailing trip to the neighboring islands of Paxos & Antipaxos and a festive brunch at a local taverna.

The wedding ceremony was held in a picturesque whitewashed Greek Orthodox chapel on a small tranquil fishing village in Corfu while the reception was hosted in a stone built breathtaking villa located north of the island’s center, overlooking the blue waters of the Ionian Sea. The couple hosted a welcome cocktail on the patio of the villa where guests enjoyed local Prosecco and Hors d’oeuvres while taking photos by the Greek inspired photo-booth backdrop reading OPA! in golden lettered balloons. A 5 course meal followed the cocktail reception at the villa’s terrace under the romantic candlelight.

The décor there was inspired by the bride’s wish to use vibrant shades of pink, often seen in the flowers used in the gardens of Greek island houses as well as the use of royal blue representing the color of the Ionian Sea, complemented by vintage Grecian gold details.

The cake which was custom made and flown from Athens was also of Grecian style embellished with golden laurel leaves that was inspired by the use of elements and architectural details used in Ancient Greece.

The couple and guests enjoyed a spectacular show of fireworks followed by a night long dancing under the stars!

This is a post that can only be described as a double dose of awesome.  It’s like one moment you’re soaking up a gallery of gorgeous from the lens of Theo Milo and the next you’re re-living every beautiful second as captured by Green Hope Productions (press play below).  A stunningly beautiful day (think rustic garden paradise) and two vendors making sure we can bask in all of the pretty?  Yes, please.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/84437395 600 338]

From Green Hope Productions… It was a perfect October day at The Atrium by Ligon Flynn- Wilmington’s secret garden, and my first time filming there. It was October 13th, 2013, my lucky number is 13 and the theme was “Lucky in Love” with a rustic chic decor.

The Atrium is a contemporary urban garden that once housed the livery stables for downtown Wilmington. By the 1970’s it had fallen into decay and architect Ligon Flynn purchase it and centered his design on the intersection of people and nature. He passed on in 2010, and in 2011, Jen of Salt Harbor Designs and Millie of Millie Holloman Photography stumbled upon the space, fell in love with it and opened it up for events. Some of the old brick walls remain exposed and others are painted white, beautifully framing the slender maple trees, oleander and other native plants as you walk in off 2nd St. Green ivy starts to crawl up the wall on the left, and then completely covers it as the yellow tin roof opens up to expose raw steel beams. I love the textures there- the greenery of the trees and the ivy, the history and the decay of the old brick walls and floors, the steel beams that reveal the starry sky, and the 20’ tall yellow fluted tin roof that adds to the understated grandeur and the simple elegance of The Atrium. I am especially in love with the tall ivy green wall, which serves as the backdrop for their ceremonies.

Stephanie & Cory met at the gym. Their first date was on the basketball court and she beat him at hoops. His mom knew Stephanie was probably the one when she heard that a tall, beautiful blonde girl had beat her son at his favorite game. Cory is a Navy Seal, so they knew they would be spending long stretches of time apart, which is one reason why they knew they wanted their day captured on film.

Stephanie rented an apartment for the weekend with beautiful old exposed brick walls in downtown Wilmington and large windows with lots of natural light. She greeted me with a warm smile while her friends got ready around her. She was my second bride this season that was married in TOMS. I love that with every purchase, TOMS will help a person in need. Her colors were yellow ochre and Navy blue. The girls wore long chiffon blue gowns with dark gray TOMS, and the guys wore white shirts with black suspenders, blue lace up TOMS and yellow ochre ties. I adored that the ties not only matched the yellow flowers, but also the yellow tin roof of the Atrium.

It was my first time working with Kickstand Events, and Emily Bell was as sweet as could be! I was never one for working with a blank canvas, so I am always amazed by the artistry that the wedding planners come up with. I toured The Atrium with Stephanie and Emily, and Emily tried explaining what it would all look like from the picture in her head. I was blown away by how Kickstand Events transformed the Atrium from the ceremony to the reception. It was so simple and perfect with yellow and white flowers in simple vases, with candles in between, and a table full of tall metal and glass lanterns along the ivy and brick wall.

I love Mason jars at weddings. Guests were invited to write their names on chalkboard stickers on their mason jars. The beautiful “Lucky In Love” programs came from Wedding Paper Divas. And all the chalkboard art was done by Stephanie.

I was very impressed by the girls from The Butler Did It, as they carried the long heavy, dark wooden benches from the ceremony site to the dining area around the corner. The reception area was assembled behind long beautiful sheer white curtains that blew gently in the late afternoon breeze. The ceremony space became the dance floor for the reception, and the starry night was illuminated by lines of small globe lights- my favorites.

It was my 2nd time working with Photographer Theo Milo. I love how his photography captures light and emotion with a very shallow depth of field. The first time I worked with him, his girlfriend Hannah did the bride’s hair. My second time working with him, she was his wife, and Stephanie’s hair was a soft, beautiful updo with a birdcage veil.

Theo chose a few different backdrops for their photoshoot following the ceremony. I usually follow the photographer’s lead with little input, and film the magic as it reveals itself. While we headed back from the waterfront, a live band played at a nearby bar. Stephanie grabbed Cory’s hand and they began dancing in the middle of Dock St. while their wedding party cheered them on. I adored Stephanie’s spontaneous spirit, and that her impromptu dance epitomized the heart of Green Hope Productions – “Capturing the magic while you’re caught up in the dance.”

Stephanie and Cory’s love of chips and salsa made Flaming Amy’s Burrito Bar the obvious choice to cater a serve yourself burrito bar complete with their delicious offering of salsas. The wooden dessert table from the Hot Pink Cake Stand was just as simple and beloved. A white cake with a simple yellow ochre flower and an off-white chevron design was topped with Mr. & Mrs. in cursive metal. It was surrounded with a few small trays bearing cookies and pink frosted cupcakes.

Four unforgettable toasts were another wonderful reason to have the wedding captured on film. Following the toasts, everyone danced, even the grandmas. There was chair dancing, a dance-off, even an impromptu limbo, thanks to a groomsmen’s belt. The night ended with a sparkler sendoff down 2nd St. where the red British Taxi was waiting for them. Usually this is where the night ends for us, but they drove around the block to Slice of Life pizza, where Cory & Steph started their marriage off with a pizza and beer date.

Modern Boston Wedding

From a very young age, I fell in love with the charm of Boston. The city has a quaintness and an all around love that is irresistible. So when our friends at Hyatt Regency Boston sent over this modern affair filled to the brim with love, sweeping views of my favorite city and a beautifully smiling Bride and Groom, I couldn’t help but pore over the lovely imagery from April K Photography. See the full gallery!

From the beautiful Bride… After Mike and I got engaged, I had some ideas on how I wanted the wedding to be. I explored the internet and magazines, but found it to be some what overwhelming. With a budget in mind, I read many reviews about different vendors and interviewed my top picks.

Boston has so many beautiful places to get married at, but our main problem was space, we needed a place that had a potential of holding over 300 people. Hyatt Regency Boston had everything we wanted; they newly renovated the ballroom and lobby area, had a beautiful terrace, price wise was the best out of all of the hotels we looked at, and the wedding coordinator (Christine) was absolutely fabulous. Christine guided us and kept us on track with the planning.

We weren’t sure if we wanted to stay “traditional” and see each other for the first time at the church or during the “First Look.” Since we didn’t have a lot of time between the church ceremony and cocktail hour we decided to have a First Look in the Public Gardens. It was such a beautiful sunny day in the Public Gardens, although it was packed with many visitors, they were kind enough to let us have our First Look on the bridge. I am so glad we did this because we were able to mingle with our guests during the cocktail hour.

From the moment I met April, from April K Photography, I knew she was the perfect match and had to be our photographer. Mike and I don’t like having our picture taken, but April made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera. April was very passionate about her work, had great energy and an endless imagination. She was able to capture all of great moments from the wedding; I am still in awe with all of our wedding pictures!

I had no idea about flowers besides my favorite flower being Peonies, but since my wedding was in August, I was not able to have Peonies. Greg from Flou(-e)r was fantastic. He went through every single flower that was available in August to find me the perfect combinations for my bouquets and centerpieces. He had patience with me especially when I was unsure of which flowers to pick and didn’t mind when I changed the flower combinations several times. The flowers in the bouquets, boutonnières and centerpieces were bursting with the most perfect looking flowers and absolutely beautiful.

Our DJ, Peter from Groove Entertainment, was awesome and so easy to work with from the moment we hired him. He played all of the music we wanted and stayed clear of the songs/genre we didn’t like. Peter was very energetic, got everyone on their feet dancing and kept the party going all night.

I wanted to get Mike the best groom’s gift. Mike being a HUGE Bruins hockey fan, I knew I had to get Rene Rancourt to surprise him at the wedding. No one knew about the surprise besides my parents, brother, Christine and Peter. Peter was so excited to introduce Rene. He had everyone on their feet with their hands over their heart, told Mike that he liked his Bruins cufflinks that I got him (Mike was confused because he didn’t show them to Peter) and introduced Rene Rancourt. The room went crazy! Mike was ecstatic (and the guest also!). Rene Rancourt stayed for a while and was available to have his picture taken showing off the 2011 Bruins Stanley Cup Championship Ring.

After Mike’s surprise, my parents surprised us with a Lion Dance. The lion dance is usually performed on special occasions. The dance scares away evil spirits and brings happiness, longevity, and good luck.

Our vendors played such a huge part in our wedding day and to this day, we still stay in touch with a few of them. Mike and I are so happy with the way our wedding turned out. We wanted our guest to have a blast and we think we accomplished it!

From Habitat EventsEveryone who works in the wedding industry has a handful of weddings they will remember forever. Whether it was the sweet connection between the bride and groom, the thought and care behind the unique details or the spirit of family and friends to soak up every lovely moment of the day, there is just something about that wedding you will never forget. For us, this wedding was the embodiment of all these elements and then some.

The bride and groom’s primary focus was to create a memorable and unforgettable experience for each and every one of their friends and family. The weekend started off at the shooting range followed by horseback riding and an authentic Montana BBQ. The wedding day was filled with so many stunning details, from the creation of an outdoor church in the middle of the Montana prairie to al fresco dining under a custom built arbor to the culmination of dancing under the Big Sky stars. The evening ended with an offering of late night snacks complete with truffle fries, bacon butty’s, and mac and cheese. While the entire event was full of awe-inspiring moments, everyone agreed the weekend’s standout moment came just as the ceremony ended when a stampede of horses ran across the prairie to the accompaniment of a choir singing “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones. It was truly an honor to be apart of such an extraordinary day!

As a former NYC Fashion Designer, I take my knowledge of style and weave it into my photography approach. Modern San Diego Engagement + WIUP

I’m just going to come right about and say it – this San Diego duo is easily one the most stylish couples we’ve ever come across. It’s what happens when two creatives (him a photographer, her a producer) fall in love, and the snaps from Studio Castillero pretty much speak for themselves. Have a peek in the gallery and keep scrolling for this week’s lucky winners!

From the Bride-to-be… One of the first things my fiancé, James, and I did when we got engaged was book our photographers. As both of us work in creative fields, he’s a photographer and I’m a producer, it was essential for us to find people who’s work was unique, fun, and interesting. That is why we knew we had to go with the brilliantly talented photographers at Studio Castillero. In planning with them on where we should do our engagement session, we decided to shoot at two locations: our downtown San Diego loft that was converted from a 100-year-old church, and our wedding venue, The San Diego Museum of Art.

Regarding the locations, we decided to use our loft for a few reasons, the most obvious being that we love our home and it’s where we feel most comfortable. Another reason was that we wanted something unique to us as a couple (who doesn’t?). I mean, how many people live in a converted historical church and have their bedroom in a former confessional booth (complete with heavy 20 ft. tall doors with slats that open and shut in the middle)? It seemed fitting that while we’re not getting married in a church, we could at least include one in something wedding related.

The next reason is that if we shot at home we could include our dog, Whiskey (or as we like to call him, Whiskey Mittens) in the photo shoot. Boy, did he ham it up! When we normally try to take pictures of him he usually finds a way to move right when the shutter goes off, but the moment Megan and Brent start shooting you’d think he was born to be a puppy model. Seemingly, this was his shoot and his humans were just their as supporting cast members. The final reason is that it gave us a (semi) legitimate reason to jump on the bed, because well, why not?

After 30 minutes of shooting in and around our loft we headed over to our soon-to-be wedding venue, The San Diego Museum of Art. Once we arrived we made a bee-line for entrance. If anyone has ever been to Balboa Park they know that there are about 20 wedding related events going on at any given moment, especially during sunset. On our short walk up to the steps, we passed 3 other couples doing their engagement shoots. Once we made it up to the front entrance, chilled as I was in my slightly ripped dress, I grabbed James’ hand and stared at the sign. It was emotional and exciting and I think that came through in the photos.

I have to say, I think that is what is so great about our photos. While this location is very popular, Megan and Brent did an incredible job making our photos feel distinctive and special. Their images perfectly convey the tone for us as a couple and for what our wedding will be. Every time I look at our pictures, me in a white dress and James in a suit, in front of our venue I can’t help but get a flutter of excitement for our big day and I couldn’t help but want to share our praise for Megan and Brent’s phenomenal photos.
