Bridal Hair Tips from Face Time Beauty Concierge

Today might just be one of my favorite days on SMP New York. Because we are going to be talking all things Bridal hair with none other than Linsey of Face Time Beauty Concierge. That’s right, she is dishing all the deets on ways to master your mane on the day you say I do. And trust me when I say you will want to file these tips away for ever and ever (because they totally apply to your daily ‘do too)…

Choose your hairstylist wisely. You will know from the first correspondence with your potential hairstylist if they are “the one” as long as you trust your instincts. Ask yourself these questions. Did he/she respond to your email or your call in a timely manner? Were you comfortable with them right off the bat? Did they make you feel at ease and confidant that they would not only be able to make your hair look like a million bucks but also show up on time? Remember that you can always work with the hairstylists to make minor adjustments to your hair but you cannot change their personality. If you feel uncomfortable from the get-go, find someone else.

Don’t fight the overall aesthetic. If you are getting hitched on the beach, don’t go for a ballroom hairstyle. Your hair and makeup should be the underlay or backdrop to the dress and the atmosphere of your wedding. A beach bride should opt for something a bit more playful or casual like big waves or a whipped chignon that doesn’t look too overdone. However, if you are getting married in a ballroom or a formal setting, then go for the structured updo to play up the drama and sophistication.

Hair can’t hold curl? Try these tips: Shampoo but don’t condition. If your hair has a hard time holding texture, do this just once right before your hairstylists arrives. It will not ruin your hair, instead, it will roughen up the cuticles and help hair lock curl into place. Set your hair for as long as possible. Just before each small bunch of hair is curled, spritz a bit of product on to deadbolt it into place. Then longer your hair can set, the more time it has to conform to it’s new curly or wavy texture. Once the set is taken out, the locks should be good to go for a long time.

Consider extensions. At Face Time Beauty, we often add “clip ins” for a timely and temporary boost, when hair is limp or lifeless. Just be sure that the extensions you buy are real hair (as opposed to synthetic) and the color matches perfectly.

Scheduling should make sense: Make sure you have enough time for each person to get ready. At Face Time Beauty, our “rule of thumb” is 1 hour per service for bride and 40 min per service for each other person. We also build in cushion room at the beginning and at the end. We always suggest that the bride gets her beauty services somewhere in the middle of the timeframe. For example, if there are 3 people getting hair services, the bride should be second. This way, the bride isn’t first but she also isn’t at the tail end when nerves are running high. There is nothing worse then rushing.

Book your stylist for touch ups: Hairstylists often pack up when the bride and bridal party start getting dressed, but the bride has hours before she actually gets married. Consider asking your stylist to stay until the ceremony or longer. This way, you can rest assured that your hair will be perfect for your walk down the aisle.

Manhattan Wedding from Sara Wight Photography

Manhattan weddings are the epitome of sophistication; the crème de la crème of glamour, if you will.  So when a talented photographer like Sara Wight sends us a little Manhattan ditty, we bask in its beauty like it’s no one’s business.  Because is there anything better than lush blooms from OVANDO, a swank reception at One if By Land, Two if by Sea and two sweeties in love?  Answer: no.  Join us in the gallery for soooo much more.

From Sara Wight PhotographyFelicia and Peter had planned on marrying in Italy, the bride’s native country. The ailing health of Felicia’s mother forced the couple to rethink their plans and hold the wedding in their hometown of Manhattan. They were married in a traditional Roman Catholic ceremony at the Shrine Church of St. Anothony of Padua in the West Village. The reception was held at their favorite restaurant, One if by Land, Two if by Sea. The couple loved the old-world European charm of this venue, as well it’s rich history (it was once Aaron Burr’s carriage house), not to mention the restaurant’s delicious menu! A trumpeter and pianist added ambiance to an already elegant affair.

Long Island Wedding from Robert & Kathleen Photographers

At the heart of every wedding is a love story. A weak at the knees, let’s grow old together kind of story that sets my heart aflutter time and time again. But what makes this one a wee bit sweeter is that this adorable duo grew up together — even attending the same pre-school. But as fate would have it, it wasn’t until just five years ago that they truly fell in love. The celebration? A classic Long Island affair with pops of pink blooms by Bayport Flower House. The whole day was captured by Robert & Kathleen Photographers, and there’s an entire gallery and film waiting for you below.

From Robert & Kathleen PhotographersKathleen and Dan had known each other for years. Growing up in the same town, they seemed to orbit around one another – attending the same preschool, elementary school, high school. They knew each other’s names, would recognize each other in town. But in all those years they had never really gotten to know one another. Until a dinner on the Upper East Side five years ago changed all that for good. That night, they shared sushi and traded stories and, in the process, found that they had much more in common that just living within the same zip code as kids. They talked for hours and by the time the night was over, Kathleen knew she wanted to see Dan again. Because in those few hours with him, she knew deep down that something incredible was beginning.

After that night, Dan couldn’t seem to stop thinking about Kathleen’s laugh. That infectious, Julia-Roberts-style laugh that made him smile at the mere thought of it. He needed to see her again. He needed to hear that laugh again. Because seeing Kathleen’s smile, hearing that laugh, made Dan feel something he never had felt before. Over the next four years they shared many more dinners. They discovered new New York neighborhoods, traveled to beautiful places, and dreamt of the life they would share together. After all those years of passing by one another, they knew that this time the timing was exactly right. They had “found” each other and they weren’t going to take that for granted.

Last year there was another dinner. Another night on the East Side, sharing sushi and trading stories. After dinner Dan got a phone call. He was needed at work, right away. He had to go fix something at a job site. With no time to spare, he told Kathleen she would have to come with him and that it shouldn’t take long. She agreed, thinking it must be a serious emergency since Dan would never usually takes her to a job site. They were ushered into Grand Central, met by security and granted access to the 59th floor.

But there is no 59th floor in the MetLife building. There was no work emergency for Dan to rush to either. When the elevators door opened, Dan escorted Kathleen out onto the roof of the building. He took her hand and walked her around, showing her the view of Manhattan from nearly 60 stories up. There, with the city traffic rushing by below them and the Empire State Building standing tall behind them, Dan got down on one knee and asked Kathleen to be his wife. Fourteen months later, they gathered together all of their family and friends, all the people who had shared this journey with the two of them, in one of their favorite places in the world. They promised to love each other forever and hosted the celebration of their lives, with bonfires by the water and dancing well into the night. There, at the end of Long Island, Kathleen and Dan’s married life began.

New York City Engagement Session from W Studios New York

I know I’ve said this before, but is New York City the perfect place for engagement sessions or what?  I mean, the hustle and bustle of the city, the seriously stunning backdrops, the never-ending lineup of fabulous locales… it’s a city simply made for capturing that pre-wedding bliss.  And when that pre-wedding bliss comes in the form of an uber-cute couple such as this one, it makes it all the more merrier with smile after smile captured by W Studios New York and a whole lot of happy moments in this urban lover’s paradise.  See it all right here.

From W Studios New York… Ashley and Sean moved to the city from Los Angeles last June. Our New York winters were a big adjustment for this sun loving couple, but luckily we planned their engagement session on the first warm day of the year! It seemed like all of New York decided to venture out on this beautiful day. The High Line park was filled with visitors and greenery, which made Sean a little uncomfortable, but as long as he was looking at Ashley his face would light up and a huge smile would spread across his face. Soon after, we found some secluded cobblestone streets in Greenwich Village where the two of them truly got to be themselves and enjoy the city to its fullest.

Long Island City Warehouse Wedding from Pat Furey Photography

Overflowing with style, this beauty captured by Pat Furey at The Metropolitan Building is the perfect stop for your daily dose of inspiration. We owe it all to the Bride’s vision of how her day should unfold, and boy did it unfold beautifully. With florals from Sprout Floral complimenting every personality-packed detail, one gorgeous venue and my favorite detail of all – love, it’s hard not to fall head of heels for this fête. It’s a bit whimsical, a bit modern and a lot fabulous – and it’s all sitting pretty right here.

From the Bride… When people asked me about my wedding planning process and what my theme was, I could never really find the right words. I had snippets of words to describe the feel and colors, but I could never find the words to describe my vision and my mental photographs accurately. Everything seemed like random bits and pieces. I usually just referred people to my Pinterest and described things as ‘anthropologie-esque.’

Tunaidi and I are an eccentric, fun, loud couple and we wanted to have a wedding that truly captured our spirit and love for one another. When it came to planning, I had the pleasure of executing my snippets. The most important step for me was to find a venue. When I stumbled upon the Metropolitan Building online, I knew I had to visit. I showed up by myself on a snowy day in January. It was pretty surreal, and I felt like a character in the movie, Amelie. I called Tunaidi, who was back in Wisconsin, and said, “I found our venue. But it’s in New York…” From that point on, everything else fell into place.

I wanted things to be ‘different.’ Consulting my friends with my gazillion ideas, Tunaidi and I handmade all the wedding decorations, along with some help from Etsy. We sat for months on the floor of my apartment printing, cutting, gluing, stamping, and sewing. As a results, we had little spools with plush hearts and handmade bow ties, fabric kites, fun photobooth props, bunting, hand assembled invitations, fun favor tags, hand-embossed programs and custom designed programs and signs.

I was terrified that my mental snippets would just seem like a random Pinterest board on the day of the wedding. But I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. With our loved ones present and as we exchanged vows, it started to snow outside. It was truly beautiful.

The wedding was full of little things that represented us. We had an espresso bar because I love coffee. Braised short ribs as one of the entrees because Tunaidi loves braised meat. Honey stick favors from Madison, Wisconsin, where we first met. From the music to the flowers and decor, everything seemed random. But it was truly us. Perfect. [dotted]

Rhinebeck, New York Wedding from Caroline Frost Photography

If there’s one thing I l-o-v-e about barn weddings, it’s the mix of the old and the new. The expected and the unexpected; the classic design with the handcrafted touches woven in along the way. And if there were ever a barn wedding to swoon, it’d be this Upstate New York affair from Caroline Frost Photography. One part cozy and another part chic, this DIYed wedding is worth a sweet, long look. See soooo much more right over here.

From the Bride… Matt and I met at Fairfield University in September of 2002 when we were just freshmen in college. We shared mutual friends and always seemed to find each other at the beach or various parties. Towards the end of college in 2006 we began dating and our love saga began. Matt claims that I told one of my friends that he resembled the ‘hot brother’ on “The O.C.” which is what prompted him to put the moves on me. I can neither confirm nor deny that I said that but I’m glad he thought I did!

Shortly after graduating college, I moved to Thailand for a six-month stint of adventure- Matt was my rock. Two years after returning we moved in together in New York City and have never looked back – we have two crazy dogs, one lucky fish, and countless memories we share. On January 28, 2012 Matt asked me to go for a walk through Central Park, not something completely out of the ordinary for a beautiful Saturday. As we walked across the Great Lawn, he recounted the many triumphs and obstacles our relationship has endured and without even noticing we had found ourselves in the Shakespeare Garden. He got down on one knee, asked, and I said yes (exuberantly).

When we envisioned our wedding we knew that it had to be a reflection of our personalities as not only individuals, but also as a couple. We knew we wanted it to feel like a weekend of festivities so it was easy to decide on the Hudson Valley. My cousin happens to be from Rhinebeck so I already knew that was a lovely town and destination.
We immediately got to work on the invitations. I loved the idea of adding vintage stamps to our save the dates as well as handmade lace bands to our invitations that I tirelessly constructed in our miniature apartment. My dear friend Maegan even hand wrote each and every envelope for our save the dates. We wanted our invitations, and wedding-weekend experience to bring forth our style, by blending both modern and rustic touches.

It was easy to decide that our ceremony would take place in Good Shepherd Church, a charming and quaint Roman Catholic Church in the center of town. The ceremony consisted of a mass where we were able to incorporate my family’s Cuban tradition of the ‘mantilla’ as well as include our closest friends and family throughout the mass, from ushers, to readers and gift bearers.
When we stumbled across Grasmere Farm for our reception space – it took our breath away in such a manner that we knew this was where we would celebrate our marriage. Being the raw space that it is, I knew that our personalities would come through in the personalized details. We wanted the barns to shine on their own and for the view to serve as the centerpiece. Anemones and succulents served as my primary inspiration and I strived to highlight them against a gray palette of linens and subtle touches of purple. I worked very closely with Hugh Piney, Catering Director at Terrapin Restaurant in Rhinebeck to develop a farm-to-table family style menu where our friends and family would literally “break bread” together and enjoy the day. We heard many guests say “this doesn’t feel like New York” and it really didn’t! Between the romantic Spanish guitarists during the cocktail hour to the spinning of vinyl records and unlimited Motown during the reception one did feel transported to another time and place.

We loved that we were able to share our special day with all of our closest family and friends and are completely overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support we continue to receive. The smiles are genuine and the love is real – it was the best first day of the rest of our lives.

Highland’s Country Club Wedding from Ciro Photography

Timeless and elegant, this gorgeous wedding from Ciro Photography is the perfect way to ease into the work week. It’s beyond lovely, from start to finish, and has that classic feel that makes my heart sing time and time again. And who doesn’t like to start Monday with singing heart? Well, just take one look at this gorgeous gallery, and yours is sure to start singing too. See it all here.

And make sure to set aside some time to soak in all the lovely in their film from Shlomotions

From the Bride… Jason and I met while we were in college, introduced by two of our mutual friends..We had an instant connection, and have been inseparable ever since. We have been there for each other through many hard times, but always come out on top, and make each other smile everyday. I can not wait to spend the rest of my life with Jason by my side.

When looking for a wedding venue, we knew the typical over the top gilded and mirrored New Jersey banquet halls were not for us. After searching long and hard I found the Highlands Country Club in Garrison, NY, and instantly fell in love. When we went to visit the venue, the beauty of the grounds and the magnificent ballroom really sold us. Everything about it was charming, from the brick veranda, to the fire pits on the lawn.

I started looking for my dress the second Jason put a ring on my finger. Being very picky and indecisive, I thought dress shopping was going to be a stressful ordeal. To my surprise, I chose the fifth dress I tried on and never looked back. The Christos Julianna dress, summed up everything that I was looking for. I felt absolutely beautiful and did not want to take it off!

Our goal for the wedding was to have a warm and intimate feel with our closet friends and family. We were able to achieve this by keeping our guest list to a hundred and setting up the tables to feel like Thanksgiving dinner. The long tables, and the mix of plated and family style food service helped with the intimate feeling. Candelabras, votive candles, and mint julep cups filled with white peony completed the elegant and warm ambiance.

The favorite part of the wedding for Jason and I was having all of our closest and dearest friends and family members present for our big day. Dancing the night away to our incredible band, The Silver Arrow Band, was the icing on the cake. Without a doubt, it was the best day of our lives!

Anniversary Session from Nina Mullins Photography

Here at Style Me Pretty, we meet a lot of amazing couples; couples whose love stories have the ability to literally light up our worlds… and our computer screens.  This darling duo is one of those couples.  The talented twosome behind Tamiz Photography, and a beautiful Mr. and Mrs. celebrating eight years of marriage in NYC.  It’s an anniversary shoot of epic proportions, featuring the ever-beautiful images of Nina Mullins Photography.  See them all in the full gallery.

From Nina Mullins Photography… In January of 2012, we traveled to Maui to attend Jill LaFleur’s workshop. It was also at this workshop that we met Jonathan and Rebecca of the amazing Tamiz Photography.  We hit it off right away with this couple, and became fast friends. Since then we have kept in touch and a few months ago Rebecca told us that they would be traveling from Maui to New York City to celebrate Jonathan’s 30th birthday.  After a series of conversations, they hired us to come shoot a love session of them during their stay in the city.

Jonathan and Rebecca will soon be celebrating eight years of marriage.  Jonathan is originally from Oklahoma City, and Rebecca is from Maui, which is where they now live and run their very successful photography business. They got married when Rebecca was just 18 years old, and if you want to see the whole story, you can check it out here. They had a rough start to their marriage, and a lot of hurdles to overcome, but they fought for each other, and by God’s grace they made it to the other side.  They are a beautiful, loving, and incredibly giving couple that would give you anything you asked for or needed.  Their generosity is unending, and we are so thankful and truly honored that they chose us to capture this side of their love, eight years later.

We started the session in their hotel room, where Jonathan watched a video on Youtube, learning to tie his bow tie.  He ended up with a well-tied bow tie, which I swore he did incorrectly, but he swore it was absolutely correct (we later found out that he was right, and I was wrong). From there, we headed over to Central Park, wear Rebecca donned a beautiful gold sequins dress from BCBG.   And even though it was March, it was still quite chilly in New York City, and these two Hawaiians were chilled to the bone.  From Central Park we headed over to Times Square for some nighttime shots.  It’s always quite the site to see, no matter how many times you visit Times Square.  Thousands upon thousands of tourists strolling the streets, with bright lights everywhere you look.

The next morning we continued our session at Rockefeller Center, at the Top of the Rock.  This is one of our favorite locations in all of New York City.  You get an amazing view of the Empire State Building, along with the rest of the beautiful, iconic skyline.  Needless to say, if we thought the day before in Central Park was cold, it was nothing compared to the chilling wind at the top of this 70 story building.  The images you see of Rebecca and Jonathan by the elevator where taken more out of necessity than anything else.  You see, there was an amazing heater blasting beautifully warm air, which created a little shelter for them in between shots.  We love the shots of them huddled close together with the Empire State Building in the backdrop.

Our final destination landed us in Washington Square.  We had already finished our photo session by this point, but Jonathan had mentioned going to the square before we headed out for lunch.  When we arrived, there was a musician playing beautiful music from the movie, August Rush.  Perhaps the music got us all inspired again, because all of a sudden we found ourselves pulling our cameras out one more time, and we shot for another 30 minutes in Washington Square.  And possibly our favorite moment came when a man that feeds pigeons in the square allowed us to photograph Jonathan and Rebecca with the pigeons.  We love the shots where the pigeons are flying away.  It was a kind of magical moment, one that we won’t soon forget.

We are so thankful we were able to capture this part of Jonathan and Rebecca’s story.  We love this couple so much, and can’t wait to share their memories with others.

New York City Engagement Session from Ned Jackson Photography

We all know that NYC engagement sessions are amazing.  That’s a tried and true fact that just can’t be argued with.  But when you combine the excitement and ambience of The Big Apple with a darling twosome that knows a thing or two about fabulous NYC locales (yummy cupcakes and tacos included), it ups the pretty by about one thousand percent.  Throw in the ever-talented Ned Jackson and a gallery of his amazing images to the mix and you’ve got the perfect way to spend a Thursday morning.  See it all right here.

From Ned Jackson Photography… As a Boston based photographer I was so excited at the chance to photograph in a new city and I had some excellent tour guides!  We shot for about three or four hours throughout NYC and had a blast!

From the Groom… We started off at Tacombi, a rustic taco shop in SoHo that’s a favorite eatery of ours.  Given that I am from San Diego, we thought it would be fun to incorporate a backdrop that speaks to my roots.  Plus the food is really good!  Our next stop was at Molly’s Cupcakes, a dessert shop that is near and dear to Sunny’s heart.  In a city full of great cupcakes, Molly’s is our clear favorite, both for the food and the ambiance – there’s a great selection of board games you can play while you eat.  When we asked about shooting in the store, they were so happy and surprised that we would even think to do our engagement photos there that they offered to let us decorate our own cupcakes. Next, we headed to Washington Square Park.  Sunny and I both went to NYU for undergrad, so the park is a special place for us.  It was the center of our lives for the first several years we lived in New York.  We didn’t meet until after we had graduated, but it was through mutual college friends, so it’s fair to say that without NYU, we probably wouldn’t have found one another. Our last stop was the Meat Packing District.  Neither of us has any real emotional ties to this neighborhood, but it’s one of the most visually interesting parts of the City thanks to the mix of gritty industrial buildings and historic cobblestone streets.

Central Park Wedding from Tin Sparrow Studio

New York City weddings are awesome, there’s just no doubt about it.  They carry this innate sense of sophistication and glamour that you just can’t find elsewhere.  And that Big Apple chicness?  It’s literally pouring from every nook and cranny of this Central Park soiree, from the simple, yet elegant ceremony to the bride and groom’s stunning attire (hello knee-length beauty) to the crazy cool lunchtime reception. See every last beautiful moment captured by Tin Sparrow Studio in the full gallery.

From the Groom…We had a perfect Saturday in September. Sunny with a hint of humidity and not too hot. The day began with Caitlin getting ready at her aunt’s apartment with her maids of honor: her mother and two aunts. Meanwhile, I (Richard) was getting ready at the W hotel. After a nice breakfast of Eggs Benedict I made my way to Central park with two of my good friends in tow. The ceremony took place on Cherry Hill in Central Park, where we were surrounded by our closest family and friends, serenaded by a string duet playing instrumental versions of “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “The Final Countdown.”

After the ceremony, the celebration continued with cocktails followed by a three-course lunch at Riverpark Restaurant overlooking the East River. Upon arrival, our guests were greeted with our favorite cocktail – the “Peg”, a bourbon and ginger-ale concoction, named for Caitlin’s mother. During lunch, guests were finally able to experience Rich’s “favorite meal of all time”: Chef Sisha Ortuzar’s short rib ravioli. As lunch concluded, guests received parting favors of jam – made from scratch by Caitlin and I.  Finally, the festivities moved on to our favorite beer-pub in the city: The Gingerman, located in midtown Manhattan. We could not have asked for a more perfect way to celebrate our wedding day!

Upstate Wedding from Carolina Rivera Photography

I liken my love for this beautiful Fall affair to that first cup of coffee on a lovely Monday morning.  It’s pure, unadulterated bliss… a feeling that, given the chance, I would happily relive time and time again. This wedding is that first tasty sip, a rush of happiness all in one sitting with a color palette that will knock your socks off, an adorable bride and groom and one devastatingly gorgeous image after another captured by Carolina Rivera Photography.  See them all in the full gallery.

From Carolina Rivera Photography… Andrea and Pat are the perfect match for each other – both have that spunk in their personalities, love to just have fun and enjoy life.  In fact, their honeymoon was a camping trip up into the mountains of Canada, which comes as no surprise that their wedding was a super fun event, on the property of Pat’s parent’s in Old Chatham, NY (upstate) with fall-themed and barn-themed details to go along with the rustic charm of this small town wedding.

Their ceremony ran into a bit of rain, so it had to be tented, but shortly after the sun made it’s glorious appearance during our portrait session, which I couldn’t get enough of!  Afterwards, soaked shoes and all, we all headed up to the tented reception with a gorgeous mountain and lake view!

The goal of this wedding was simple and unpretentious: no dances or formalities, just straight up fun, local caterers who brought food from their farms, and prepared it right on the farm.  Two cakes, one homemade gluten-free for the bride, and locally brewed beer with lots of dancing and a surprise fireworks display at the end of the night.

Central Park Photo Shoot from Julie Gee Photography

I’m a firm believer that Mondays need a little extra something to really put that pep in your step. Well, this Central Park shoot from Julie Gee Photography is the perfect little something we all need today. With a stunning Saja Wedding gown, a beautiful bouquet from Flowers by Daye  and a gallery full of images safely sitting in this gallery, it’s safe to say, we have one pretty Monday on our hands. See it all here.

From Julie Gee PhotographyI wanted to do a photo shoot at the Bethesda fountain in Central Park since I first saw this place. When Saja Wedding agreed to let me borrow one of their samples I knew it would be the perfect fit. Juliane (the female model) is my friend from high school. She is half armenian and half german and it was her first time visiting the US. Johnny is originally from Haiti, but has lived in the states for many years now. It was a super windy and cold day in NYC which played to my advantage, cause the models started cuddling up to each other after a while. Daye provided us with a beautiful spring flower bouquet. It stands out even more, because every thing else is still leafless. I love the simplicity, cleanliness and softness of this shoot. I shot these during the golden hour on a Wednesday evening between 5.30-7.30pm.

From Brian Hatton Photography… Lexi and Ivan’s wedding was the perfect New York City wedding that encompasses beauty with a modern, clean, restrained approach to decor. There is a radiant quality throughout the day from the beautiful golden tones of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral to the late afternoon light streaming through the windows at TriBeCa Rooftop. Ron Ben Israel’s cake completely summed up the wedding with its beautiful candied flowers and sleek grey stripes. I was absolutely floored when Lexi’s dress was brought out. Her blush colored Monique Lhuillier gown was breathtaking.

New York City from KT Crabb

New York City will forever be one of those places that I hold dear to my heart. From family trips as a child, to mother-daughter weekend getaways, it never fails to leave me breathless and always wanting more. The city is consistently abuzz with activity and KT Crabb did an incredible job of capturing it all! We’ve picked KT’s brain for her favourite haunts and not-to-miss sights, but we’d love to know – what’s YOUR favourite NYC locale?!

From KT Crabby… The first time I visited New York, it left me intrigued and simply wanting more. Eight years later, it still holds the same effect whenever I visit. Filled with such a wide variety of scenery, people and activity, you simply can’t get enough.

I had a wonderful opportunity to spend a week in New York and with it came lots of walking. I hoped to capture the essence of what I thought represented the city in springtime. The city is full of lovely parks to stroll through, great shops, wonderful entertainment and of course, delicious food!

Restaurants
Serendipity – This restaurant is famous for their frozen hot chocolate dessert, however, don’t let that cause you to miss out on their great menu. The restaurant itself is a unique experience with its offbeat atmosphere and incredible wall decor. Be prepared to put your name in and explore the surrounding area. It’s a popular spot with an average of a 2 hour wait.

Stardust – Located at the tip of Broadway sits this unique restaurant. I don’t think you can find an experience quite like it any where else. All of the talented servers are striving to land a gig on Broadway. You can request a broadway song, watch as your server and team sing their hearts out, all while you enjoy a meal.

Cafe Bene – We can’t forget about the most important meal of the day: breakfast! Cafe Bene’s waffles are so good, no syrup is required. It’s like a party your mouth with every bite.

Shake Shack – It started out as just a hot dog stand in Madison Square Park. With crazy long lines for 3 years straight, they knew it was time to open a permanent location. They offer the true summer time American cuisine of hamburgers, hot dogs, and shakes.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria – Take a stroll over the Brooklyn Bridge and land right at the birth place of Grimaldi’s. It’s a delicious pizza like no other. Best shared with friends and family while lounging at the Brooklyn Bridge park and overlooking lower Manhattan.

Max Brenner – The first time I visited Max Brenner, I swore I would never forget the name. They specialize in deserts of all kind, but their fondue is one that I haven’t forgotten. You can make a quick stop in to see their already made goodies, or enjoy a sit-down desert.

Magnolia Bakery – If I could only use one word to describe the Magnolia Bakery, it would be ‘fresh’. I wasn’t hungry until walking past their cosy shop and smelling their delicious creations. Once inside, I was hooked. Freshly made…everything! It’s a delightful bakery experience I wish I could have everyday.

Sights
Central Park – I’m convinced you need a full day just to explore all the wonders of Central Park. It stretches over 50 blocks and is full of lakes, rocks, great views of the city and even a castle. Best way to view the park is to take a leisurely bike ride along their designated path and stop and lay in the grass to take it all in.

Brooklyn Bridge – There are many bridges that connect Manhattan to its surrounding mainland, but this one takes the cake. It’s one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Simply marvel at this old world creation and enjoy the views of lower Manhattan and Lady Liberty

Statue of Liberty – She seems so tiny from far away, but by hopping on a boat and standing up close will make your head spin. It left me awestruck to see this symbol of freedom and democracy face to face.

Time Square/Broadway – It’s more than just a place full of confetti on New Year’s Eve. They best way I know how to describe it is simply an experience. Ads illuminate this popular spot and draw you in like a moth to a flame. Once there you can experience the great shopping, TV shows and of course, Broadway musicals.

Top of the Rock – If there is only one thing you get to do while in the City, this should be it. Journey up to the top of the Rockefeller building for the best view of the city. The views offer Central park on one side and the Empire State building, Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty on the other side.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden Bridal Shoot from Amy Rizzuto Photography

There are bridal sessions… and then there is this lovely masterpiece of a session from Amy Rizzuto Photography, aka, a drop-dead gorgeous, take-your-breath-away shoot planned to perfection by Mekina Saylor and featuring one of the prettiest gowns from Sarah Jassir that you will ever lay your eyes upon. (Literally.)  And if that isn’t enough to leave you complete speechless (it so is), then the stunning Brooklyn Botanical Gardens backdrop will most certainly do the trick.  See it all right here.

From Amy Rizzuto PhotographyThere is something completely magical about Spring time in New York City. The sun shining brightly after a long winter, the smell of warm rain showers, and of course, the cherry blossoms. For a long time, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens has been THE place to go to enjoy these lovely pink buds. Every day after work, new yorkers flock to the pretty blanket of petals that collects under the trees, taking in the stunning scene around them as they laugh with friends, read a good book, or just spend a few moments escaping from the busy city streets.

Even though Mekina lives in Manhattan, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is one of her favorite places in the world. She recalls, “This time of year always reminds me of the first time I fell in love. I was in high school, and completely elated that my senior crush had asked me to the prom. As I put on my gorgeous dress, I looked out my window to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom. The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens takes me back to that spring so many years ago. Every ounce of it is filled with beauty, making my heart overflow with the best feeling of all… love.”

When I told Mekina my dream of photographing her as a bride in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, she happily agreed to be my lovely model! As Mekina is a planner, she got to work bringing Christina D’Asaro Design and Sarah Jassir of Angelique Bridal on board, who altered one of her custom designs especially for the shoot! Cherry Blossom Lane at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens was truly the perfect location for this whimsical bridal session. As the soft pink petals fell gently around Mekina, magic happened. The collection of photographs that resulted makes me feel joy, hope, and most importantly, love.

Intimate Brooklyn Wedding at the Clover Club from León Images

Over the years, I’ve seen this wonderful shift of how couples are making their weddings completely personal and intimate. Whether they are hosting 20 or 200, they are finding a way to make it all “them” so to speak. Which makes my job so fabulous. Because when you get to peek into the personality of a couple like this one (through the beautifully captured images from León Images), it simply doesn’t get better. It’s pink shoes, leopard gloves and a couple so in love – and you can see it all right here.

From the Bride… Dan and I are both from Chicago, but we didn’t meet until a couple months after we had both moved to New York. We met at an event and soon after we started dating, we discovered we had mutual friends back in Chicago — it was one of those serendipitous occurrences when you realize how small the world can be sometimes.

We fell in love with Brooklyn because it’s so charming, peaceful and unexpected. So, when it came time to pick a wedding location, it wasn’t much of a decision: We wanted to show our friends and family — almost all of whom were coming in from out of town — where we had made our home.

We had this vision of an intimate and casual afternoon wedding celebration, and the Clover Club was absolutely perfect for that! There’s an adorable parlor in the back where one of our best friends officiated a short ceremony. We wanted everyone to feel like they were a part of our day so we included a part where we asked them all to hold candles and give us their light and their blessing. Once the serious part of the day was over, it was time to move into the main dining room and relax and party. Our guests are still talking about the amazing food and brunch cocktails.

Everyone has been asking about the inspiration behind the pink shoes… That was just our way of being unpredictable and bringing a little fun to the day — something we try to do in our relationship together.

Central Park New York City Wedding from Meg Miller Photography

This wedding made me all sorts of happy inside. It could be the Central Park setting, maybe it’s how the DIYs are all seriously stylish, or perhaps it’s the bow ties, but I am pretty darn sure it’s the two gentlemen in the center of all the celebration who are really making my Monday. Because not only are they stylish as all get out, the love they share for each other is beautifully obvious, and I just can’t get enough of that. See all of the gorgeousness from Meg Miller Photography right here.

From MegKevin and Michael took DIY to a whole new level of chic. Not having much luck finding anything commercially produced, that they felt represented their organic style, they started from scratch. Using keynote, card stock paper and picture mounting corners, they designed and assembled all the invites by hand. Each invitation was hand addressed by Michael’s mom, who happens to be an artist. Before placing in the envelope, each invite bundle (invite, RSVP and registry card) was hand-tied with black and white baker’s twine. Each of the corresponding pieces within the invites consisted of the central bowtie theme.

As avid runners, Kevin & Michael share a lot of time together in Central Park. Kevin actually went down on one knee and proposed to Michael in the middle of First Avenue at Mile 18 of the NYC Marathon in 2011. They knew from the start that the park needed to play an integral role in where they would have their ceremony. They wanted to day to be special not only for them, but for everyone involved. Kevin was lucky enough to grow up with German exchange students from the same family. They all flew in for the wedding and the two girls (Ulrike and Caroline) participated in a reading along with the grooms’ sisters. They had the German sister’s read the text in German followed by the English translation from their sisters. They read the lyrics of Schumann’s beautiful song he wrote for his wife, Clara:

You my soul, you my heart, you my bliss, o you my pain,
you the world in which I live; you my heaven, in which I float,
o you my grave, into which I eternally cast my grief.
You are rest, you are peace, you are bestowed upon me from heaven.
That you love me makes me worthy of you; your gaze transfigures me;
you raise me lovingly above myself, my good spirit, my better self!

And then Kevin & Michael, reading from their iPhones, exchanged vows that each of them wrote to one another. The ceremony was finished with a reading of Pablo Neruda’s famous Sonnet XVII as well as a community blessing in which the entire group pledged to be there to support Kevin & Michael as they journey into marriage.

The reception was held at GustOrganics in the heart of NYC’s Greenwich Village. Keeping with the organic theme, they featured a fully organic menu, including wines. They even went so far as to ensure that their vegan guests and those with celiac had menu options. The decor of GustOrganics added such romantic tones and textures to their images.

Michael & Kevin wanted to ensure that their party take away’s left guests with something that was both memorable and meaningful. For the first of the two favors, Kevin & Michael wanted to share one of their favorite recipes for Chana Masala with those who came. Michael’s mom designed the cards, which included a written description of the recipe written by Michael and Kevin. They filled all the spice packets themselves (with some help of very awesome friends) and affixed them inside with double stick tape. Again, as avid runners, they have a favorite post run treat that they pick up at Whole Foods Markets. They wanted their guests to have something sweet for the morning and bulk ordered these Breakfast Bars from the Union Square Whole Foods Location. Using bags purchased at Michael’s Arts & Crafts store, they packaged up 2 cookies per guest, tying each bag with ribbon and affixing a tag that was designed by Michael’s mom.

When asked about the DIY elements of their wedding, they said, “We pretty much DIY’d everything! We made the save the dates, we hand made the invitations, Michael’s mom did all the calligraphy for the invites (the addresses) and the favors, we hand made the favors. The cookies were from Whole Foods. We also designed and made the programs. For the invites, Michael and I designed the actual invite, RSVP and registry note in Keynote, we then had it printed and we mounted it using the picture mounts onto each of the cardboard backings, we then tied everything together with bakers twine. For the favors, Michael’s mom wrote out the front of the card, which Michael and I wrote and then we had them printed. We filled all the spice packets ourselves and affixed them inside with double stick tape. The cookies, or breakfast bars are from Whole Foods and we bulk ordered them and then bagged them ourselves. Michael’s mom made the tags.

When I asked Kevin what his favorite memory of the day was he replied, “I would say my favorite memory from the day was exchanging vows with Michael in front of everyone that came to be there. It was really special to me. That question is really hard, because honestly, the whole day was awesome!”

Brooklyn Wedding from Shot by Jake + Peony Events

Stacey of Peony Events was brought in the day of this gorgeous wedding to make sure every detail, so lovingly thought out by the bride, was absolutely perfect… and that she did. I was legitimately shocked when I read how much of the wedding was done by the bride herself, because the whole thing, captured by Shot by Jake, was picture perfect!

From the beautiful bride… Kevin and I first met in college in Oklahoma, but our love story didn’t truly begin until we both ended up in NYC so it just felt right to have the wedding here. After an exhausting search to find the perfect venue, we landed on the Prospect Park Boathouse. We chose the Boathouse for many reasons, but mainly we wanted an indoor/outdoor setting with a garden Gatsby feel. The amazing architecture of the building with it’s arched ceilings tiled with green glass and gorgeous surrounding landscape, had us hooked instantly. I didn’t want to take away from the natural beauty of the space so I kept the color palette a range of dusty pastels and did not go the traditional route of selecting specific colors (I know, shocking!). Oddly enough, red ended up sneaking in as an accent from the red heart on our save the dates, red cover of the mini New York Magazine’s I made for our programs, to the giant red “L” carnival light that sat atop our candy bar table. It all just somehow worked.

Since I’m from Texas and Kevin is from Oklahoma, we put a great deal of effort into giving our out of town guests a taste of New York City. I set the tone with a welcome gift that consisted of packed pizza boxes (what’s more NY than pizza?!) with a fact filled note, statue of liberty crown, map, visitors guide and an NYC staple a black and white cookie baked with love by my mother. I’m someone who loves making and creating things myself, although some may say it’s because I’m a control freak, but I designed and made nearly everything myself beginning with our wedding website (euferlewis.me). Other DIY’s included the programs, menu’s, table number board, my head piece, etc. I did enlist a very talented florist, Christie Orlando, to take care of the floral arrangements, but overall every detail from start to finish had my personal touch and it made the day that much more memorable and special. Through all the blood, sweat and bride tears, many bride tears, seeing the amazement and joy our guests faces was truly rewarding.

To keep our sanity the day of, we worked with Stacey Sainato of Peony Events, which was the best decision I could have made. She kept vendors in line and our event running smoothly throughout the evening allowing us to enjoy every moment.

PS: Don’t dare miss this sweet behind-the-scenes film from J’adore Love

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/65896360?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0&color=66ffcc 600 338]

From Lora Nicolas-Olaes… Jardin roses, poise de senteurs and antique lanterns adorn a bronzy-gold sequined table. Vintage suitcases are piled up in antique ladder chairs. Up in the ceiling are a multitude of steel beams that zigzag across the roof. What once was an industrial space–the Basilica Hudson in upstate New York–becomes the perfect backdrop for our setting: the Gare Montparnesse railway station in Paris in the thirties.

The idea of Hugo as a wedding theme came upon Lyna Larcia-Calvario, owner and event designer of KasalNY Weddings & Events and Jennifer Concepcion, creative director of J’adore Love Photography, one afternoon of brainstorming, after the latter had a chance to see the film. “I fell in love with the story and the look of the movie,” said Concepcion. She picked Hugo as the inspiration not only because of the award-winning Martin Scorsese film’s classic look, but because it brings out the romantic in her. “There was a scene where Hugo compares the world to a machine. He says everyone has a reason to exist, and no one could have been just an extra part. That struck a chord with me–the idea that the world is a big machine that is moving and working its every piece so you could meet, fall in love, and marry the person of your dreams.” Calvario nods, adding, “Doing what we do, we have always loved the idea of destiny, of soul mates. We’d like to think that we’ve seen that ‘destiny’ unfold for our couples every time we do a wedding.”

“If Hugo were a romantic movie instead, this is what it would look like,” continued Calvario. As with the film, clocks were a staple in the décor. “We wanted to play with the idea that when you meet the love of your life, time stops.” The Versailles cutlery, the white-gold rimmed China with matching glassware, and the golden mini-cupcake stands, all echo the vast presence of gold seen in the famous French station’s gargantuan clocks. To soften the metallic look, Iviejoy Agustin of Ivie Joy Flowers provided a lush touch of pastels reminiscent of French macarons. “I designed the floral aesthetic using texturized flower arrangements – peach garden roses and parrot tulips combined with blush sweet peas and ranunculus against the green backdrop of moss and echeveria,” Agustin said.

Modern elements are mixed with classic ones to create a balanced aesthetic. The tablescape design gives one a “past meets present” feeling, juxtaposing the simple lines of cloche vessels against vintage lanterns and antique candleholders. Golden, square plate chargers are matched with the antique table settings, while modern metallic napkin holders hold mint satin napkins. In one corner, what used to be old is made new again: a beat up, antique piano is transformed into a dessert table with chocolate and caramel macarons, elaborately decorated cupcakes and scalloped pearly gradient mint cakes–goodies seen in most French patisseries. To wash off the sweetness, nearby are tiny “milk” bottles that are reminiscent of the olden days’ door-to-door delivered milk. A closer look however, would reveal that they are simply a couple of label-less Starbucks bottled frappes adorned with different kinds of lace—a very D-I-Y idea that brides-to-be in this Pinterest-age would deem ‘post’-worthy. Interestingly, these drinks are on top of a pile of suitcases, arranged to insinuate a visual of people waiting on a train platform, complete with a “station” clock—an aesthetic that further reinforces the train station theme. An array of colorful and mismatched chairs in leveled platforms parade styles belonging to practically every decade—a color palette that is an apparent homage to the great George Melies’ attempt at achieving ‘technicolor’ by tinting the frames of his films.

Old-fashioned wooden benches are placed on a well-lit clearing with various floral arrangements lining a path. Agustin used a large manzanita branch, antique hydrangeas, and hanging moss to frame the complementing light green door that acts as the focal point to the ceremony space. Adding character is a faded brick wall, creating an overall rustic feel for our makeshift chapel, and providing an aesthetic best for a simple and intimate ceremony.

The couple, standing bedazzled next to each other, becomes the key element in completing the over-all look. The groom looks polished wearing an updated spin to popular men’s fashions of the 30’s – donning a maroon bowtie, striped suspenders and light brown two-toned shoes. The bride–wearing the heart shaped key pendant seen in the film, and matching heart shaped engagement ring–looks ethereal in a white lacy sequined gown by Rebecca Schone (of Schone Design), which style gives a nod to a romantic bygone era, but still looks fashionably current for the modern bride. A gold hairpiece made by Thea of Hushed Commotion has a design mimicking the face of a clock, adding an eye-catching accent to her period appropriate styled hair.

In the film, Melies told a precocious young boy, “This is where they’re (dreams) made.” The Basilica Hudson’s massive windows allow the light to stream openly, much like the space Melies used to make his films. “It’s amazing what could be done within such a short period of time, when everyone shares the same vision and works hard to achieve it. This creative collaboration is nothing short of a photographer or filmmaker’s dream,” said Efrain Hernandez, owner and head photographer of J’adore Love Photography. And that is precisely what one would feel entering into this transformed space—leaving the real world for the surreal, transported to a place where old exists with the new, and where everything beautiful and romantic is frozen in time.
