Elegant Wedding at New York Historical Society

Elegance and simplicity will always reign supreme in my book. But a dash of big city chicness? Well, that doesn’t hurt one bit either. Mix it all together and you’ll get one heck of a gorgeous day, as evidenced by this Brooklyn love-fest straight from the lens of Smitten Photography. With no shortage of sequins and stunning city views, let’s just say the full gallery is what wedding dreams are made of!

From the Bride… Our vision was to have an elegant and welcoming day where every detail was chosen with the intention for personalizing our wedding and making the guests feel comfortable. Our good friend gave a beautiful sermon at our ceremony.

Since we live in Jackson Hole WY (but the bride is from Brooklyn), we did a romantic and rustic look for the garden and transitioned to a woody elegance for the reception. The groomsmen wore Wyoming sagebrush and hops on their boutonnieres. The sequined textures from the bridesmaids’ dresses were incorporated into the flowers for the reception for a woody and elegant look.

Behind the Blog with Clara Persis

Anyone who’s run a blog for any length of time will tell you there are many wonderful things about it. But at the top of that list? The people you get to meet along the way. Folks like Clara Persis, who unquestionably ranks amongst the the sweetest, most inspiring women you’ll ever have the pleasure of getting to know. Captured by Bryce Covey, there’s a full gallery, and more Behind the Blogs here!

SMP: Some words you live by?
CP: “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.” – Brené Brown

SMP: Any guilty pleasures?
CP: Sweets in any form, preferably anything with cream cheese frosting. Or a really indulgent brunch- a loaded Bloody Mary, eggs benedict, and pancakes of some kind for “breakfast dessert.”

SMP: What did you think your dream job was before your dream job found you?
CP: I didn’t have a specific dream job, but I’ve realized in looking back that I did have a dream job structure. And somewhat embarrassingly, it came from Sex and the City. But it wasn’t Carrie! It was actually Samantha. I was fascinated by the way she got to be her own boss. I loved how her office always looked so sleek and organized, and how she had complete control over her surroundings. And though you didn’t really get a very accurate sense of her “clients,” I really liked the ways her days varied. From a young age I craved working for myself, managing a team, having a job that allowed me control over my own schedule, allowed me to be creative while still strategic, and to work in an environment that I loved. That pretty much embodies what I now do. That said, I really would like a bigger office space outside my home, but all in time!

SMP: What’s your favorite quote that describes your creative process?
CP: “If something scares you, you should probably be doing that thing.” I have a tendency to let my fears and anxiety get the best of me, which can hold me back work wise. The most exhilarating and inspiring projects often involve some form of risk, but the rewards and fulfillment I reap from those projects are the biggest. I’m really trying to remember that as I take some big leaps to expand my business in 2014.

SMP: If you had the opportunity to get a message across to a large group of people, what would your message be?
CP: Do not be afraid to want a lot (something I learned from Debbie Millman). I think we’re all capable of way more than we think, it’s just a matter of breaking our goals into tangible to dos, fighting as hard as we can to not let fear hold us back, gathering as much help as possible, and realizing things take a very very long time.

SMP: If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
CP: Hindsight is 20/20, so perhaps I wouldn’t have majored in philosophy in college (never ended up getting that law degree…). But then again, writing tends to be one of my stronger skills and has literally landed me clients. Without having to read and write as much as I did during undergrad, I might not be where I am today. That said, I wish I had worried less about figuring out what I wanted to do with my life in my early 20s. If you focus on moving towards your passions, things really do come together.

SMP: What is one piece of advice you would give to a blogger just starting out?
CP: Produce the highest quality content you possibly can, make sure it’s consistent, and network like mad.

SMP: What is your favorite item in your home?
CP: I got some new organic bedding from West Elm before the holidays and I’m absolutely in love with it. It makes my bed feel like a big white cloud! It’s heavenly to dive in to at night.

SMP: What’s your best tip for balancing work and personal life?
CP: When you work for yourself, there is quite literally always something you could be doing. I struggle a lot with feeling like I’ve “done enough” at the end of each day, but have learned that if I just keeping going and sacrifice time for myself, or with family and friends, that makes me less productive overall.

SMP: What was the tipping point in your business that made you feel like your blog was going to thrive?
CP: It was less about my blog and more about my business thriving that made me realize I must be doing a thing or two right with the blog. When my blog started bringing in business or new clients would say, “Your blog is beautiful! We want to work with you because of it!” I felt like I was really hitting my stride.

SMP: What is the hardest lesson in business you’ve ever learned?
CP: Don’t undercharge for what you’re worth. It will just make for a miserable working experience.

SMP: Stranded on a desert island question… what’s the one cocktail you would take with you?
CP: Mmmm a Michelada! It’s like a beer and Bloody Mary combined, with lots of lime and salt.

SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of trend time?
CP: For my personal sake, slate blue.

SMP: One thing every style savvy homeowner should have?
CP: A tastefully scented candle. It instantly makes a room feel cozy and inviting- perfect for entertaining or simply relaxing at home.

SMP: If you could buy yourself a single gift of any cost, what would it be?
CP: A second home somewhere warm that I can escape to in the winter months, most likely Southern California. I love New York but the lack of sunshine in the winter is brutal!

Brooklyn Bridge Park Wedding

Quite frankly, I can’t think of a better spot to swap vows than Brooklyn Bridge Park. It’s the most iconic little gem of urban “I dos,” so when Weddings By Two sent over these beautiful snaps, we had NO choice but to stop and swoon. The gallery is packed with one pretty moment after another, and don’t miss Mint Wedding Cinematography’s film to tie it all together!

From the Couple… We wanted a wedding that celebrated everything that makes us happy: our love for each other, being with family and friends, an undeniable addiction to Mexican food, and our favorite stomping grounds in Brooklyn.

I wasn’t the “…ever since I was a little girl…” bride. I never sketched the perfect wedding dress in my notebook, picked out flowers for my future bouquet in the backyard, or danced around with my mother’s veil on my head.

Needless to say, something happened when I met Jeff. I knew he’d be my husband one day. So when, he turned around and got down on one knee that December afternoon, I couldn’t help but start dreaming up our wedding day. Right from the start, our biggest wish was to simply have a fun party, and break as many wedding rules as possible… (except the ones we liked!)

We started with the biggest task of all: the venue. Gran Electrica in Dumbo was more than we could have ever hoped for—a farm-to-table Mexican restaurant under the Brooklyn Bridge with a beautiful garden, surrounded by an ivy-scaled brick wall, not to mention a margarita menu that trumps any open bar. Tacos and guacamole? We knew we had found the venue that suited our style perfectly. From the moment we asked if they’d consider hosting our wedding, we felt so welcomed. Plus, we couldn’t help but admire the impeccable service and owners who were always willing to help with every detail along the way. We felt so lucky.

This led us, around the corner, to Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Brooklyn Bridge has always been my favorite landmark in NYC. I had walked my second grade students across it on field trips, photographed it from every angle, and read books about its history—a monumental project seen to completion because of the unyielding support between a husband and wife. I never would have imagined saying my vows beneath it. We secured a permit and set the official date.

We love the late-summer energy that lingers in the final days of September, the fun Mexican details at the restaurant, and the relaxed vibe only Brooklyn knows. We wanted a fun, fresh, and romantic reception atmosphere to reflect that. We’re so happy with how it turned out!

Our florist, Gary of Van Vliet & Trap Event Design, covered the tables with burlap runners and gold mercury glass vases with garden roses, seeded eucalyptus, and lush dahlias in soft white, peach and blush tones. The garden was lit with strung Edison bulbs and scattered gold mercury votive candles. We also strung traditional Mexican banners, found on Etsy. They were patterned after the shop owner’s vintage Spanish lace wedding dress. It heightened the romance even more. Then, there was the photo-op of the night: the LOVE sign. Instead of ultra-expensive vintage marquee lights, we found custom made replicas for a fraction of the price. They were a total hit!

Jeff, a former art major, designed our seating chart, which we had printed and put in a clearance-aisle gold frame. I had found initial jewelry stands on sale at Anthropologie months earlier, and despite not knowing for sure what I’d do with them, I bought twelve. Turns out, they made perfect table markers and take-away gifts for several guests. We also bought miniature succulents and spray painted plastic pots in a soft, metallic gold before adding our monogram to each. We even printed small pennant flags, wrapped around toothpicks, to place in each pot. A small thank you for our guests.

We also designed the invitations and programs ourselves, using craft paper from Paper Presentation, and glue dots…lots of glue dots.

Ben, of Weddings by Two, captured the magic of the day perfectly—he is a master with light. For a wedding with no rain plan, we were blessed with golden sunlight, and Ben’s photographs actually glow! But more importantly, he is an awesome guy. He joined our party as if one of our oldest friends. We wish we could spend every weekend that way.

Chris, of Mint Wedding Cinematography, somehow single-handedly, caught every angle, subtle nuance, and heartfelt moment, creating a film that tells the story of our day. All a bride wants to do after her wedding is relive it again and again, and now I can.

We danced the night away under the Brooklyn Bridge. It was pure magic and we couldn’t be happier to share all the details with SMP so that our vendors can each be credited for all the beautiful and thoughtful touches on our day.

It was truly the best day of our lives and we’ll spend the rest of forever trying to top it!

From the ladies at Revel… Lavender and antique gold were our inspiration for this glamorous yet organic styled shoot, featuring flowers, leaves, wood and stone. We wanted to reimagine lavender – not Easter-egg pastel lavender – but a more grown up, sophisticated hue. We accented this romantic color scheme with antique gold, wood, and rock candy for the perfect mix of nature and elegance. For high-impact décor that won’t break the bank, we spray painted over 400 maple leaves to create a gorgeous golden leaf installation with matching garland for the Bride and Groom’s chairs. Another great DIY project was the rock candy cake, dusted with edible gold glitter for an extra touch of charm. Our lovely partners at BHLDN provided the perfect accents like druzy stone place card holders and whimsical golden bird confetti. The organic look of wooden tables and wood-covered walls at Brooklyn Winery, and the fantastic Queens Spread appetizer table completed the look!

Montauk Club of Brooklyn Wedding

Sometimes I can’t believe I get to stare at gorgeous weddings like this one from Clean Plate Pictures at Montauk Club of Brooklyn and call it my job. I literally have to pinch myself from time to time. And today is one of those pinch myself days. Because this wedding is the definition of perfect, from the Bride’s gorgeous Sue Wong gown right down to the stunning reception and everything in between – and you can see all the pretty right here.

From Clean Plate Pictures Kara and Scott’s wedding was amazing! It was my first time shooting at The Montauk Club of Brooklyn and I’m in love with the 19th Century Venetian Gothic building, plus it really fit their style. Kara and Scott are such a relaxed, happy couple and the day was full of fun quirks, including the bluesy, neo-folk 5-piece band during the reception, the delicious hot sauce and honey covered Fried Chicken and Pug cake toppers. And even after a wedding dress mishap Kara was able to find a beautiful dress only a couple of weeks before the wedding. These two are so sweet. I’m so glad that they had me along for the day. It was so much fun!

Wythe Hotel Inspiration Shoot from Landon Jacob

Landon Jacob Photography took a note from the simple elegance handbook and transformed it into inspiration for a gorgeous urban wedding. With gowns by Winifred Bean, design and styling by Jove Meyer and florals by 2H Flowers, this Brooklyn photo shoot is a blending of Fall, pretty rustic touches and the all out beauty of the Wythe Hotel. You can catch even more right here in the full gallery as well as in the film by Valerie Barnes below.

Simple elegance, that is the focus of our beautiful Brooklyn styled shoot featuring gorgeous wedding gowns by Winifred Bean, stunning stationery by fourteen-forty, amazing hand made accessories by hushed commotion and wonderful planning and designing by Jove Meyer Events at the wonderful Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn captured through the lens of the ever so talented talented Landon Jacob Photography.

We worked together to embrace the beauties of fall without choosing the obvious pumpkin and fall foliage. Instead we added our own twist to the shoot with fresh local, seasonal fruits on the cake and included in the centerpieces and florals made by the incredible 2H flowers. The pomegranate really stood out in this shoot as our version of fall, its unique shape and beautiful colors blended well with the natural look we were aiming to achieve.

Rather than using traditional paper products for stationery we went with a more nature inspired look. The name cards were hand written on wood chunks and the menus were printed on cloth. We added rosemary sprigs for a nice accent on the eye and nose!

The delectable and eye catching sweets were made by the talented pastry chef Erin Kanagy-Loux of Reynard at Wythe Hotel. When thinking about the wedding cake we really wanted to try something unique and fruit heavy so we took a naked cake and added our own twist to it, Erin used the frosting between layers to add an amazing texture that makes the cake come to life!

Brooklyn Engagement Session from Clean Plate Pictures

These two are really, really ridiculously good looking. Like so good looking, these engagement photos from Clean Plate Pictures could be from the pages of J.Crew’s lookbook. But you know they are real… because they are so sweet and so in love and so adorable. It’s the make your day kind of engagement shoot and it’s all right here.

From the photographer… Patrice and Jonny’s engagement shoot was so fun! We started in DUMBO, Brooklyn where we hit all the great spots, including the roofless Tobacco Warehouse that has since been fenced off to the public so that construction of a new theater can begin. We then headed to the East Village where we took some street shots near where these two sweethearts live and got engaged. Can’t wait to shoot their wedding in Tarrytown next May!

Brooklyn Botanic Garden Wedding from DM Events + Elisabeth Millay Photography

When the ladies of DM Events get their pretty little hands on a wedding, magic always tends to happen. They have this amazing way of transforming a day into something that is not only beautiful, but meaningful. This Brooklyn Botanic Garden beauty captured by Elisabeth Millay Photography is a perfect example. It’s layered with so much lovely I could cry (like the stunning stationery from Momental Designs and the breathtaking florals from the DM Events girls themselves), making it safe to say we have a winner on our hands. See it all here.

From DM EventsMaria and Teddy were a dream to work with! Not only are they the sweetest couple, they are truly in love and it shined through all aspects of their wedding.

Brooklyn Botanic Gardens provided the perfect backdrop for this romantic, floral-inspired wedding. Lush soft blooms were used in all of the arrangements and complimented the natural beauty of the property. The affair was filled with thoughtful touches throughout. One of the most beautiful decor elements was the wooden menus with hand painted blooms from the artwork of Kristy Rice from Momental Designs. Playing of the natural materials, we used birch votives to help bring some of the outdoor garden beauty into the reception.

The night was a blast! Guests danced to the tunes of The Elements, a fantastic band from Elan Artists, all night! It was awesome to see so many smiling faces in the photobooth, too! We are always thrilled to create a wedding that is not only beautiful, but also a fun celebration ?

And who else would we turn to other than the uber talented Elisabeth Millay to capture all of these lovely details. Our favorite detail was the whimsical bouquets carried by all the lovely ladies, each filled with blooms of peonies, ranunculus, and an abundance of lush greenery.

From beginning to end, the day was perfect and we were so honored to be a part of it!

If we’re being totally honest with ourselves, I think we can agree Mondays aren’t necessarily the most inspired day of the week. So when we came across this wedding after party from the always amazing Michelle Edgemont, we couldn’t help but think it may be just the ticket to pull us all out of the Monday rut. Because with vendors like Nine CakesBrklyn View Photography, and Love + Brain Films on board,  how could it not?! From Michelle Edgemont… The inspiration for our Parisian Fete came from what happens after the wedding. Once the Bride & Groom have said goodbye to their last guest, they want to enjoy a intimate after party to celebrate with their closest friends. For us, that meant a quick clothing change, best friends and cocktails. Our gorgeous bride removes the longest layers of her tiered lace wedding gown to reveal a sweet cocktail dress. She adds a custom designed flower inspired headpiece, brightens up her makeup and switches to her party shoes. Before joining their best friends for cocktails outside on the patio, our newlyweds share a private moment by enjoying their delicious wedding cake.

501 Union was the perfect location for our shoot because of it’s modern beauty and elegance. Our color palette was a mix of light pinks, blue, teal and a hint of gold which inspired our vendors for the shoot. Michelle Edgemont created a gorgeous ceremony backdrop with layers of colored string, creating a clean but visually pleasing color story that would work with the black and white elements of the space. She teamed up with Lindsay Rae Designs, who then added the palm fronds to the structure for a little french flair. All of the flower arrangements were large to compliment the space, but she used soft, feminine flowers to offset the strong lines of the venue.

Betsy, from Ninecakes, created an elegant, sweet and romantic wedding cake. It was adorned with gold trim, handmade sugar flowers and blackberries that looked as if they were freshly picked from the garden. Our caterers, Saucy by Nature, created a menu of finger foods to be easily displayed and eaten at the bar. They only used ingredients that would be in season for a Fall wedding. A unique element of 501 Union, is that they have in-house professional cocktail “mixologists” on hand and were kind enough to create signature drinks just for our shoot.

Our stationery designer, Fourteen-Forty, created an elegant, romantic suite of paper goods to compliment our french inspired fete. She hand crafted the menus, invitations and correspondence cards with gold leaf accents. Patricia also created one of a kind Mademoiselle/Monsieur signs for our bar stools from Rent Patina, who also provided all of the furniture for our shoot. The handmade wooden “Just Married” sign by Modern Press was the absolute perfect compliment to 501 Union’s vintage car and Lindsay’s flowers in the trunk.

One of our favorite parts of this shoot was the dress we borrowed from Rebecca Schoneveld. Thea, of HushedCommotion, loved this convertible gown and knew it was the perfect dress because of the clever way it quickly comes apart! Hushed Commotion and Lindsay Rae Designs collaborated to create a one of kind, hand beaded headpiece that was adorned with fresh pink peonies. The hair style created by Styles on B perfectly complimented this intricate look. Face The Day NY created our models gorgeous looks with hints of pink, gold for the ceremony and purples and blues for the after party. Additionally, Thea recently created a collection of shoe clips for Chromatic Gallerie, so we happily used two pairs of their gorgeous shoes and then two sets of shoe clips.

We were lucky to have Courtney of Love + Brain Films as a part of our team, her video perfectly captures the fun moments and details that went into this beautiful shoot!

New York Green Building Wedding from Jillian Modern Photography

When I first sat down with this gorgeous wedding from Jillian Modern Photography, I was in absolute love. The style, the spunk – the perfect mix of modern and inviting, it’s basically SMP gold. But then I read the description, and I realized this wedding has so much more depth than that. That all the perfect details almost didn’t happen because of Hurricane Sandy, and when it all did come together, these two newlyweds only cared about one thing – marrying each other. And that ultimately makes me love this wedding even more. See why here.

Urban Space

From the Bride and Groom… We met one summer at Philadelphia University where we both went to college. We lived in garden apartments across from each other and on the last day of school, Graham’s friend shouted to Melissa as she was walking home. He told her to come up and hang out – and Melissa met Graham. That Fall semester, we both happened to be studying abroad in Rome, Italy where we fell even more in love. The rest is history.

When planning our wedding, we wanted the wedding to represent us as a couple. We are not the traditional type – we wanted something unique and modern but also warm and inviting. Inspiration came from our passions. Graham designs beautiful installations, so of course we wanted him to create something for our space. Melissa loves to paint so she wanted to make the space bright and cheerful with her artwork. Graham is an idea man, his designs are big and his ideas even bigger. Melissa loves the details. She could sit for hours painting flowers or practicing calligraphy. We wanted to combine our strengths to create a space where our family and friends would feel welcome and reflect our passions.

The fact that our wedding was the week of Hurricane Sandy was quite unique. We had been planning the wedding for over a year and a half. Just 5 days before the wedding, Sandy hit NYC and NJ. It was devastating to see the destruction that Sandy created in NY and NJ. Having no power in downtown Manhattan for the entire week was an extreme challenge. Our caterer could not get the food she ordered, and her kitchen had no power. Our rings were stuck at the jeweler. Some of the bridesmaid dresses were stuck at the tailor. How would we get flowers? Our officiant and photographer were stuck in California. On top of this, there was a gas shortage. How would guests get to Brooklyn? The tunnels and some bridges were closed. Subways were not running. Many of our guests had severe damage to their own homes, or no power. At one point in the week, Melissa really wanted to give up. How could we be having a wedding during all of this? Our family and friends were so supportive and figured out a solution to every problem we had. They went above and beyond to help ensure this wedding would happen. We are so grateful to them for everything they did this week. The wedding turned out better than it ever could have been. It was a day filled with love and joy – and gave everyone a reason to celebrate during a harrowing week.

DIY and handmade elements…
-Our sculptures hanging above the bar: Graham designed and built
-Lasercut wood panels: Graham designed and created
-Save the Dates: Melissa hand-painted each one and made a stamp out of her calligraphy
-Invitations: Melissa hand-painted the design and had them professionally printed. She did the calligraphy for the envelopes as well.
-Menu Cards: Melissa hand carved stamps, and menus – one for each guest.
-Escort Cards: We found old tickets to a boxing match at an antique store. They were a beautiful shade of blue and blank on one side. Melissa did the calligraphy and used washi tape on plexi glass to create a seating chart.
-Notebook Favors: Melissa hand-carved a pretzel stamp (a nod to their Philadelphia and NYC background). She stamped a mini Muji notebook for each guest.
-Bride and Groom Signs: Melissa hand-painted on kraft stock.
-Card Box: antique metal box, Melissa painted cards onto the inside.
-The Bosco: the BEST photobooth.

Food Choices (which, by the way, was AMAZING!): a cheese + bread charcuterie station, tomato soup shooters with grilled cheese, Samosas, Maryland crab cakes, a seasonal flatbread station with fresh herbs, a fried buttermilk chicken station with brussel sprouts and roasted fingerling potatoes, a make-your-own shrimp taco bar (with guacamole, pico de gallo, black beans, spanish rice), and sliders (beef and black bean). Late night snacks included quesadillas. Desserts were Pumpkin and Apple pies with fresh whipped cream plus Blue Marble Organic Ice Cream (pumpkin, pistachio almond, vanilla and chocolate choclate chip served out of a cute little cart.) Our Signature Cocktail was a Dirty Martini, Melissa’s favorite drink. Graham loves Black label. We also had PBR and Natty Bo (and full bar). For favors – Bosco photobooth pictures and Muji notebooks!

Music:
Processional- Big Wheels by ELO, Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis (for Melissa walking down aisle)
Recessional- Going up the Country by Canned Heat
Grand Entrance- Foxey Lady by Jimi Hendrix
First Dance- Don’t Worry Baby by The Beach Boys

The Most Memorable Moments:
From Melissa… Walking down the aisle with my Dad. Seeing all of our family and friends, and of course Graham. It was the happiest moment of my life.
From Graham… Our “first look” when I saw Melissa in her dress. She looked so beautiful! It signified the beginning of the wedding for me.

Advice:
Melissa’s Advice – Keep it all in perspective. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the details, but just remember why you are really planning this awesome wedding – to marry your best friend and spend your lives together. If that remains your number one priority, you will have a beautiful wedding regardless of what goes wrong the day of.
Graham’s Advice – Unexpected things may happen – roll with the punches. Don’t over-plan and leave room for the people to make the experience.

Question to the Newlyweds from Jillian Modern, photographer: If you could go back and do it all again, what would you change (if anything)
Answer: not one thing

Brooklyn Wedding at ICI Restaurant from Melissa Kruse Photography

These two are adorable.  A fact I learned when we featured their uber-darling, smile-infused engagement session last year.  It was a happy-fest I just couldn’t get enough of, much like their sweet, sweet Brooklyn wedding captured by Melissa Kruse.  And guess what?  You’re about to fall head over heels in love, too. Because this is a day that is chock-full of joyous moments, darling DIY details and an entire gallery of lovely right here.

From Melissa KruseIt finally came! The day I have personally anticipated since my cousin first walked through the front door of my apartment saying, “This is ‘California.’ He’s just a friend from work.” I didn’t know much about him yet. I didn’t even know his real name. But I knew they were meant to be together.

In just one night I could see the way he looked at her. The way she lit up whenever he returned to her side. The way he anticipated her every move… and begrudgingly left the party without her when I insisted she stay behind for a cousin-only sleepover. Their first official date wasn’t until two months later, but I feigned girly surprise when she “revealed” to me that they finally went out for a pre-meditated dinner for two.

As for their destined big day, every last impecable detail was imagined, created, and coordinated by the bride herself in the ultimate DIY fashion – and with remarkably calm elegance at that. From their white-washed wonder of a venue, iCi Restaurant in Forte Greene Brooklyn, to the champagne inspiration all around (the girl loves her bubbly… I can attest to that!), the day was light, bright, and so incredibly happy. Thirty five of their closest friends and family lept at the opportunity to fly from all corners of the world and lend a hand in any way they could to create a celebration of their love that would be just as warm and festive as they are. And I had the joy and honor of being one of them. Attending as both guest and photographer, it was amazing to be a part of this special day and be by their sides every step of the way.

This is the story of a fun-loving girl from Escanaba, Michigan and a super super sweet boy from Brazil, fated to cross stars in New York, one of the biggest cities in the world…

Brooklyn Backyard Wedding from Isabelle Selby

You know how they say you can buy fashion, but you can’t buy style? I think weddings are sort of the same way. No matter how much you prep and plan, spend and splurge, a great wedding really comes down to the bride and groom behind it — couples like this Brooklyn pair who add that unspoken cool factor from start to finish. (And of course, having incredible vendors like Isabelle Selby and Jove Meyer Events doesn’t hurt one bit either!) Catch every second of this style-infused affair right over here.

From the Bride… We really could not have asked for more from our wedding day. Flatbush Farm was a gorgeous venue, complete with a brick and ivy- covered backyard that lent itself well to the relaxed atmosphere that we wanted. They supplied the food and drinks, so we had an amazing dinner without having to deal with a caterer. The day before the wedding was cold and rainy, but we lucked out with warm and sunny weather. Live music seemed to follow us throughout the day, from the Shins rehearsing next to our hotel as we got ready to neighbors playing music from their back patios as we ate dinner. One of my favorite things about the wedding was how much our community was intertwined with the details: my ring and shoes were Julians grandmothers, my brother designed our ketubah, a friend designed our programs, my friends and I made the centerpieces, and both of our families contributed recipes for our cookbook favors. Each of those details, and many more, will always remind us of our wonderful friends and family.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden Spring Wedding from Servidone Studios Photography

The Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is what wedding venue dreams are made of. I’ve never seen a wedding there I didn’t love, and this beauty by Servidone Studios Photography keeps that tradition running strong. It’s classic elegance defined, and there is even more pretty to soak up right here.

From Servidone StudiosColleen and Conor are two of the absolute sweetest people you will ever meet. Having such a perfect wedding day couldn’t have happened to two more deserving people! Their day was elegant: Conor donned a tuxedo, and Colleen looked like a blonde Audrey Hepburn with her classic hair style.

The Palm house set in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens was stunning! We were lucky enough to have the cherry blossoms in full bloom, and we took full advantage of the LOVELY surroundings for photographs. As for the decor, it was classic and bright… Shades of white, with a touch of sparkle. Elegant perfection. The party was nothing short of amazing, the band, The Rhythm Shop, kept the party going, and going, and going…

Brooklyn Wedding at The Green Building from Heidi Benjamin Photography

If this breathtaking Brooklyn wedding doesn’t make your entire weekend (+ week + month + year), then I don’t know will.  And I am sooo serious, lovelies.  Because this wedding?  This DIY masterpiece held at the ever-amazing Green Building?  It’s downright amazing.  With a bride and groom who couldn’t be cuter (don’t miss their true love fairytale below), a plethora of vintage-inspired details and a cozy meets intimate vibe that is all kinds of wonderful.  See it all captured by Heidi Benjamin Photography in the full gallery.  It’s a beauty.

From the Bride… My wedding was a magical day, to say the least. Each time I look through our photos or watch our video of the day, I’m immediately taken back to the day – the blizzard, our nearest & dearest, the cozy atmosphere we created in The Green Building, the sheer joy of it all. I hope that by looking at these photos you feel like you were right there, too!

Michael and I met one cold night in December 2009 while shopping for ribbon at Kate’s Paperie on W. 57th Street. We chatted for a bit but left without exchanging numbers. With every step outside the store, I wanted to go back and introduce myself, but I was too shy. Our story is epic– and includes posting a Craigslist Missed Connection notice and a time span of many months plus help from our good friends. Finally, we found each other again! “Kate’s Paperie Boy” and I celebrated my Sound of Music opening night performance over martini’s and sealed the night with a kiss. We’ve been together ever since!

We managed to pull off the whole she-bang – from engagement to “I do!” – in about three months. It was pretty fast, but once we got engaged we just couldn’t wait to get married! We got engaged just before Thanksgiving – right at the height of business for my baking company – so after we nailed down the date, the venue, the dress, and the officiant, we had to put most of the rest of the planning on hold until after the holidays. The majority of the details were figured out the month before! Sounds crazy, I know, but the good thing about it was that I didn’t have time to second guess myself. I had to trust my instincts and own personal style and go with it. The wedding that we ended up having was so personal, so heartfelt, and so us. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Although we looked at various venues Upstate, we decided on The Green Building here in Brooklyn in order to make it easier on our guests traveling in from out of town. Neither of our families live on the East Coast. This wound up being an enormous blessing, because we had a blizzard on our wedding day! Thank Heaven for public transportation! It was an added bonus that The Green Building is simply gorgeous! Those vaulted ceilings, chandeliers, and rows and rows of exposed brick – quite the romantic backdrop.

After reading A Practical Wedding by Meg Keene (A must read for every Bride on a budget), I became charmed by the fact that for hundreds of years weddings happened in the home – in parlours, in living rooms, in backyards. Anyone who’s ever lived in NYC knows that it would be difficult to fit ten people, let alone two large families and a group of friends into a living room, so we decided to bring our living room – our parlour – into The Green Building. We wanted it to feel like an extension of our individual apartments in one, new space – our first dinner party as a married couple. Almost all of the items – decor, serving-ware, furniture – are items that we have each collected over the years. Bringing our own things also helped keep costs down! Also, as we met buying ribbon, there was a slight ribbon theme in the decor and graphics – how could there not be?

Having a small baking business in Brooklyn, I know quite a few amazing vendors, so when it came time to decide on flowers, dessert, food, and a few of the furniture rentals, I went with my favorites. This only added to the feeling that our friends and family were truly surrounding us on our big day – supporting and celebrating this enormous, crazy, wonderful commitment.

Some of our favorite details…

Our cocktails: My company, Butter + Love, uses a lot of jam, specifically Bonne Maman jam. I have a hard time throwing things away, so by the time we got engaged I had collected almost 300 Bonne Maman jam jars! When trying to figure out what to do for our signature cocktail, I had the idea to pre-mix the cocktail in the jars – when it came time to hand them out to guests all the bar tender had to do was unscrew the lid, add some ice and add a straw and stir stick! They looked adorable all piled up on the bar. And I love a gingham lid.

Our favors: I made Red Velvet sandwich cookies (with a cream cheese/white chocolate ganache) and piled them in clear boxes topped with a hand-made pom pom on top. Adorable and delicious!

Our cake: I wasn’t going to have a wedding cake – and rather, have a dessert table using the amazing creations of my talented friends. However, when Jen (of Liddabit) heard that she told me she was making me a cake and wouldn’t take no for an answer! I gave her my recipe for Guinness Chocolate Cake and she created a four-tiered, choclate-y buttercream masterpiece! We loved it!

Our cake toppers: Michael’s father, Steve, hand carved our initials out of wood from his home in Portland, Oregon. He wasn’t sure which grain would best suit our decor, so he made three sets out of three different types of wood! We were able to place the other two sets around the room. It was a very sweet gesture.

A few things that made this wedding-on-a-budget possible…

1) Recruiting friends and family to help with set-up and tear down. It takes a village to throw a budget-friendly wedding. We are forever grateful for the help we had.
2) We had a small ceremony, followed by an intimate dinner, and then opened up the reception to a larger group of guests, serving light, party food. This allowed us to have the sit down, family style meal we wanted while not breaking the bank.
3) We had an off-season wedding and got married on a Friday night. Thinking a bit outside the box with when/where your wedding happens opens up a lot of possibilities for a unique day!

A note about one of the photos — There is a photo of our wedding rings wrapped in ribbon – that is the ribbon Michael bought the night we met. Cue: Awwww.

Surprise Proposal from Charlie Juliet

When you work in the wedding world, there is really nothing as amazing as a surprise proposal. Especially one featuring two cute-as-can-be sweethearts, a breathtaking Brooklyn backdrop and a crafty groom-to-be.  And this happy-filled proposal?  Well, it has all three.  Plus, one love-filled (+ uber-joyous) moment after another captured in amazing images by Charlie Juliet and a sweet description from the soon-to-be Mrs. that will leave you smiling all week.  Check it out in the full gallery.

From the Bride-to-Be…When the opportunity presented itself to schedule a couples shoot with CJ, I immediately jumped on it. CJ and I have been friends since Design School; knowing first-hand how talented she is, I just couldn’t pass up the chance to get in front of her camera! Little did I know, Rob had already been planning on proposing around the same time… later on he told me that when I mentioned the idea of the photoshoot to him, I was giving him the perfect “layup” — how could he not propose then?!

The day of the shoot, we met CJ at one of our favorite spots in Brooklyn. I jokingly brought along a “diamond” cocktail ring for the shoot — upon my mentioning this to CJ, Rob quickly jumped at the opportunity to swap it out for the real thing. CJ, who was of course in on the plan, was ready to capture it all on camera. I was absolutely surprised by it all (which, in hindsight, seems a bit silly as this had all the makings of an engagement shoot!) but in the end, I can’t imagine it having happened in a more perfect way.

Being able to share CJ’s photos with our friends and family was by far one of the highlights of the day — I don’t think either Rob or myself could have realized how meaningful that would end up being to us. CJ beautifully captured just how happy both of us were that day; being able to share these once-in-a-lifetime images with those closest to use is more than we ever could have asked for.

Prospect Park Boathouse Wedding from Anne-Claire Brun Photography

I love a Bride with a vision, particularly when that vision is as beautiful as this. Because the pretty things that danced around in this lovely Bride’s head during her planning process turned out to be whimsical perfection. With details that make your heart flutter and a love that will make it do flips, every image from Anne-Claire Brun is happiness defined. See them all here.

From the Bride…As much as I like to claim it was love at first sight, Jeff and I ran in the same circle of friends and chatted in passing on a few occasions. However, we were never formally introduced. To be exact, it took three times before an opportunity presented itself. As they say, third time’s a charm! The third meet was on a beautiful summer night in 2008. Jeff and I were at a friends’ rooftop party in Lower East Side. It was here when a good friend introduced us to each other as the “other friend” who did not “drink.” Yes, both Jeff and I are quite a rarity, especially in New York City. We chuckled at the candid introduction, as both of us were obviously used to this label. Then the song “Oblivion” by Anything Box came on. We both started singing it together and began discussing our music interests, which ranged from hip hop to indie rock and more. Through these two commonalities, our conversation surpassed small talk and into sharing stories about our upbringings in small town America as Chinese kids in restaurant families. From then, a wonderful friendship began. We literally have been inseparable since Jeff and Sandy have been inseparable since.

During our two year anniversary in October, Jeff planned out a secret outing that he would not unveil. The day started at our favorite Brooklyn brunch spot – Brooklyn Label. Afterwards, Jeff hurriedly and nervously drove us an hour and half out of the city still giving me no hints. I initially assumed this was going to be a nice pumpkin-picking afternoon. However, once the car pulled up the road, I saw a massive field speckled by large weave baskets with neon-colored fabrics waiting to be filled with…hot air! We took off into the air and had a beautiful ride over Northeast’s fall foliage. It was not until we landed did Jeff pulled me to the side and got on one knee and popped the question. Of course, I said YES!

Within weeks of the proposal high, we began our search for the perfect venue. Jeff and I knew we wanted an outdoor wedding with a view in Brooklyn, since it’s where we live. Initially, we thought we were going to go for another venue in Prospect Park, but when we approached the Boathouse after walking across the park, we immediately knew this was the spot. The Venetian styled building sits spectacularly by the Prospect Park Lake. Upon entering the space, we immediately fell in love with the flow of space…AND you can rent a mini boat for you and your guests to ride after the ceremony! We finalized the date within a month time.

Unlike most, I decided not to limit myself on colors, so we went with yellow gold, gray silver and light coral to compliment the romantic setting. Additionally, I wanted to make sure there was a bit of an Asian flair, since my husband and I are Chinese. I took these choices and went on hunt to find our florist. There are so many choices out there, but I wanted to work with a creative small shop. I stumbled across Park Deli, a floral shop (that also sells skateboards!) located close to the venue. Michael and Valentine, owners of Park Deli, were fabulous to work with! We wanted Asian ceramic vases to represent our heritage and they found these simple cream Japanese-style containers. The flowers and colors we selected with them in the beginning really brought all the décor and the bridesmaid’s dressed together.

With two main things checked off our list, I began day dreaming about how I would like the big day to look. The ceremony takes place on a small pier outside facing the Lullwater Bridge and landscape. As to not get lost in the view, I knew we had to create a focal point. I stumbled upon Everly Lane on Etsy who creates fun tissue tassel garlands. After measuring the pier, I created an image of how I wanted the garlands to hang above us on our special day. I sent this to Everly Lane with my color selection and in a month it came in! We had Park Deli install it the day of.

I definitely partook in a lot of the design, since we did not have a wedding planner. For the entrance, I went to a flea market and bought an old antique frame that would hold the guests name cards and table assignment. For the guestbook, I designed a massive puzzle and had someone at my work, which is an architecture firm, help me laser cut it out. The guests were instructed to write warm words on the “white” side of the puzzle and place it in an apothecary jar. To keep guests cool outside, I ordered the Chinese sandalwood fans that were placed on each chair. It’s amazing how much guests enjoyed these favors! During my down time, I started painting our cake toppers with each having a bit of our physical character. Park Deli then provided a few of our selected flowers to be sprinkled on the cake. I found this to be a quick and affordable way to decorate a wedding cake!

There is an upper level to our venue, which has a balcony that overlooks the ceremony steps and lake. We decided to take advantage of this upper level and stationed a makeshift photo booth. Our friend, Ken, helped us set up the equipment and space, while my bridesmaids created the backdrop. It was the groomsmen’s responsibility to go shop for props…and shop they did! You can check out the slideshow I created here – Jeff & Sandy Photo Booth Video (http://vimeo.com/52757840).

Luckily, my husband’s sister owns an apparel production company in Manhattan, so she was able to create any textile needs I had. Therefore, I browsed the Fashion District for fabrics to bring my vision together. I finalized with table runners in gray and light coral to ground the dining tables, while the main table linens were basic white to keep the space light and airy. For the longest time, I wanted a theme for our reception and fell in love with the phrase “Eat, Drink and be Married!” With the help of my bridesmaids, I created three favor jars for each table that were individually labeled with one word of the phrase. The labeled jars contained favors that represented each word – “Eat” contained chopsticks; “Drink” contained striped straws, “Married” contained sparklers. In Chinese, fireworks (a.k.a. sparklers) were used to ward off evil spirits and we thought this was a perfect way to end the night.

All this of course would be a visual lost if Anne-Claire did not capture it! I think the photos speak for themselves! We scheduled our first meet at a coffee shop and were immediately enamored by her personality and work. She was so down to earth and patient in telling us how the day would go from getting ready to the end of the night. It rained for a few hours before our ceremony, which worried me. However, she never fretted and assured us the pictures would turn out great. I truly believe that getting along with your vendors makes this entire experience better.

My most memorable moment of our special day was our boat ride around the lake during sunset with our closest friends, right after Jeff and I said our vows. It was during this quiet moment when my husband and I were able to take a step back and enjoy all that had transpired. As we returned to the dock, we saw how all the guests were also enjoying their drinks inside and outside! It truly was a beautiful day and we thank everyone who assisted and supported us.

Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Wedding from Aurelia D’Amore

I have to say, I think The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has to be one of the dreamiest venues I ever did see. There, I said it. My love struck proclamation might have a little something to do with this stunning soiree captured so beautifully I could cry by Aurelia D’Amore. It’s a Brooklyn beauty if there ever was one, and it’s all waiting for you right here.

From the Bride…My whole family hails from Brooklyn. We were scattered throughout the borough for years, but over the decades we all slowly moved away, and our ties to it have grown more and more tenuous year by year. So my family was really excited when Aidan and I re-established our roots there by moving to Park Slope in 2009—but they were ecstatic when we decided to get married at the Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

We had a late-fall wedding, and we spent months panicking about the weather. And then, the night before the ceremony, there was a pretty epic rainstorm (a week later we had Hurricane Sandy, by the way). But that Saturday morning, we woke up to bright, sunny skies: barely a cloud in sight, temperatures in the sixties… pretty much the perfect day. So nice, in fact, that Aidan walked with his groomsmen (and one groom’s lady) from our apartment to the wedding. And later on, during the ceremony, as the sun set into a clear, starry sky in full view of the all-glass Palm House, we knew we really couldn’t have lucked out more.

The ceremony, not surprisingly, was my favorite part of the night. Our friend Cody, who introduced us seven years ago, officiated, and the three of us wrote the whole thing together. Cody is a fantastic comedienne, and she had everyone laughing and crying throughout, which was perfect. We didn’t want the ceremony to be boring, but we didn’t want to make light of it either. Case in point: for our two readings one was Cody and my brother Jordan (also an actor) performing a classic comedy routine that my cousins first performed on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 60s; and the second was Aidan’s boss, Lewis Lapham, reading a beautiful poem by the thirteenth-century Sufi poet Rumi.

It was all perfect. We used a ring that had been first worn by Aidan’s great-great-grandparents in the 1890s and was used in over a dozen ceremonies in his family since. My two grandmothers and Aidan’s grandmother walked down the aisle during the processional, arm in arm with Aidan’s groomspeople—the oldest and the youngest generations flanking us to remind us of the family who produced us and the future that this wedding was a promise toward. The bridesmaids got multiple catcalls during from the audience as they came down the aisle, and before Cody said a word, there were tears and hysterical laughter from all sides. And Cody knocked it out of the park—she was basically the best officiant/emcee anyone could ever hope for.

Following on the heels of our weather luck, we soon discovered how fortunate we were to have selected the vendors we did, because they were all amazing. Of particular excellence was our photographer, Aurelia D’Amore, who flew out from Los Angeles. Her pictures are gorgeous, and we still can’t figure out which ones to choose for our wedding album– they’re all too good! And our DJ, Taro Baugham, who works with Sugartown Industries, nailed every single section of the night, from ceremony to last dance. For us, after the venue and the ceremony, the music was our biggest priority. We’re both obsessive music nuts, and Taro was extremely patient with us as we handpicked each playlist and requested a ton of must-play songs, and he took the way-too-many songs we selected for dancing and crafted a perfect set. The dance floor was packed all night; it didn’t matter whether Taro played Del Shannon or Phoenix. And watching our grandmothers shimmy with equal fervor to the Hava Nagila as they did to ODB was a real treat.

Our friends and family came from all over: Los Angeles and New York, England and Singapore. And after weeks of planning and worrying, everything went off without a hitch—and we were left with the perfect night that we will forever treasure.

From Clean Plate PicturesMargot and Brian’s wedding was an excellent way to start the year. They had a really sweet and relaxed day, with close friends officiating the ceremony. So stylish yet simple. There were fun details like fake tattoos, a candy bar and delicious doughnuts for dessert. The only thing that was missing was their adorable pup Stevie (who we met at their engagement shoot last year.) These two are so lovely and we wish them all the luck in the world.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden Bridal Shoot from Amy Rizzuto Photography

There are bridal sessions… and then there is this lovely masterpiece of a session from Amy Rizzuto Photography, aka, a drop-dead gorgeous, take-your-breath-away shoot planned to perfection by Mekina Saylor and featuring one of the prettiest gowns from Sarah Jassir that you will ever lay your eyes upon. (Literally.)  And if that isn’t enough to leave you complete speechless (it so is), then the stunning Brooklyn Botanical Gardens backdrop will most certainly do the trick.  See it all right here.

From Amy Rizzuto PhotographyThere is something completely magical about Spring time in New York City. The sun shining brightly after a long winter, the smell of warm rain showers, and of course, the cherry blossoms. For a long time, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens has been THE place to go to enjoy these lovely pink buds. Every day after work, new yorkers flock to the pretty blanket of petals that collects under the trees, taking in the stunning scene around them as they laugh with friends, read a good book, or just spend a few moments escaping from the busy city streets.

Even though Mekina lives in Manhattan, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens is one of her favorite places in the world. She recalls, “This time of year always reminds me of the first time I fell in love. I was in high school, and completely elated that my senior crush had asked me to the prom. As I put on my gorgeous dress, I looked out my window to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom. The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens takes me back to that spring so many years ago. Every ounce of it is filled with beauty, making my heart overflow with the best feeling of all… love.”

When I told Mekina my dream of photographing her as a bride in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, she happily agreed to be my lovely model! As Mekina is a planner, she got to work bringing Christina D’Asaro Design and Sarah Jassir of Angelique Bridal on board, who altered one of her custom designs especially for the shoot! Cherry Blossom Lane at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens was truly the perfect location for this whimsical bridal session. As the soft pink petals fell gently around Mekina, magic happened. The collection of photographs that resulted makes me feel joy, hope, and most importantly, love.
